  1. Good morning. It's a joy to worship with you and to gather with you in the name of Jesus.

  2. And now we have just finished our sermon series in the book of Exodus.

  3. And today we're going to be in the book of Mark chapter 4.

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  4. So if you have a Bible, please open your Bibles to Mark chapter 4.

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  5. If you don't have a Bible, please raise your hand.

  6. We'd love to bring you a copy that you can use.

  7. And you can keep that copy as well and take it home with you.

  8. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  9. Father, I acknowledge that I am just a messenger.

  10. You are the author.

  11. Father, so help me to just be faithful to the message you entrusted to me to proclaim this morning.

  12. And give us, as a whole church, ears to hear.

  13. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of all of our hearts be pleasing in your sight.

  14. O Lord, our rock and redeemer.

  15. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  16. If you are willing and able, please stand for the reading of God's word from Mark 4.

  17. I'm just going to read to verse 29 here.

  18. Again, Jesus began to teach beside the sea.

  19. And a very large crowd gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea.

  20. And the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land.

  21. And he was teaching them many things in parables.

  22. And in his teaching, he said to them, listen.

  23. Behold, a sower went out to sow.

  24. And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it.

  25. Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil.

  26. And immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of soil.

  27. And when the sun rose, it was scorched.

  28. And since it had no root, it withered away.

  29. Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain.

  30. And other seeds fell into good soil and produced grain, growing up and increasing and yielding

  31. thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.

  32. And he said, he who has ears to hear, let him hear.

  33. And when he was alone, those around him, with the twelve, asked him about the parables.

  34. And he said to them, to you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God.

  35. But for those outside, everything is in parables, so that they may indeed see but not perceive,

  36. and may indeed hear but not understand, lest they should turn and be forgiven.

  37. And he said to them, do you not understand this parable?

  38. How then will you understand all the parables?

  39. The sower sows the word.

  40. And these are the ones along the path where the word is sown.

  41. When they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them.

  42. And these are the ones sown on rocky ground, the ones who, when they hear the word, immediately

  43. receive it with joy.

  44. And they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while.

  45. Then when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away.

  46. And others are the ones sown among thorns.

  47. They are those who hear the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches

  48. and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.

  49. But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit,

  50. thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.

  51. And he said to them,

  52. Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket or under a bed and not on a stand?

  53. For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest, nor is anything secret except to come to light.

  54. If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.

  55. And he said to them,

  56. Pay attention to what you hear.

  57. With the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and still more will be added to you.

  58. For to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

  59. And he said,

  60. The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground.

  61. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows.

  62. He knows not how.

  63. The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.

  64. But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.

  65. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  66. You may be seated this time.

  67. Just to give you a little forecast of where we are and where we're headed.

  68. As I mentioned, we just concluded our series in the book of Exodus, took us about a year.

  69. And next, in the fall, we're going to do a new sermon series in the book of Revelation.

  70. In the intervening weeks, in the month of August, we're going to have a short sermon series on Psalms of Lament.

  71. Designed to really help people who are suffering and struggling and in pain,

  72. how to go to God in that pain and draw closer to Him as opposed to drawing away from Him.

  73. But before that, we start that mini-series.

  74. Today and next Sunday, we're going to hone in on our mission as a local church.

  75. In September, it will be seven years since the public launch of our church, if I'm counting the years correctly.

  76. That's seven years of trying to accomplish our mission, which is to glorify God by making disciples of Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit.

  77. Why do we exist as a church?

  78. To glorify, not ourselves, but God.

  79. And many of you are probably more familiar with our vision statement that Jen mentioned during the announcement,

  80. because it's very memorable, loving God, loving one another, and loving our neighbors.

  81. If we are fulfilling our mission faithfully, that's what it's going to look like, a cascade of love, loving God, one another, and others.

  82. There are many ways, though, however, we can love God and love one another and love our neighbors.

  83. But the primary way that a local church is supposed to do that, our mission is to glorify God by making disciples of Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit.

  84. Everything we do as a church, every ministry team, every members meeting, every song we sing, every sermon preached,

  85. has that as its goal, to glorify God by making disciples of Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit.

  86. But this is not an easy or smooth work, as many of you know.

  87. Many of you have shared the gospel with non-Christians, but have been repeatedly disappointed by rejection.

  88. Sometimes people you disciple and pour out to and invest in the most are the ones who make poor decisions that harm their relationship with God and the church.

  89. And in worst cases, those who seem to have believed in Christ at first renounce their faith altogether and fall away, which could be discouraging.

  90. These realities could tempt us to wonder, is the mission worth it?

  91. Are we even doing this right?

  92. And if so, then why is this happening?

  93. And so my prayer and hope for you this morning and next week is that we, as a church, would be re-energized for and re-focused on our God-given mission.

  94. And that's why we're in Mark 4, 1 to 29 today.

  95. And this passage reminds us that we should heed the word of Christ and sow it liberally, trusting that God grows it, even though we know not how.

  96. That's the main point of this passage.

  97. And we're going to first talk about how we heed the word, and then we sow the word, but then how God grows the word.

  98. Because by this point of Jesus' ministry, he is regularly gathering large crowds wherever he goes.

  99. He preaches on the Sea of Galilee using a boat as a flowing pulpit.

  100. This helps his voice to carry a little further.

  101. It amplifies it a little bit so that more people on the shore can hear.

  102. Some Israeli scientists have actually run tests to test the acoustics and the capacity of this area, known as the Bay of Parables.

  103. And they have concluded that easily the sound travels to thousands of people.

  104. And so here it says in verse 2 that Jesus was teaching them many things in parables.

  105. The word parable comes from a Greek word that means to place next to something.

  106. It's a kind of analogy or an object lesson that's put next to an idea in order to explain it and illustrate it.

  107. But interestingly, Jesus here employs parables also to confound people.

  108. And we're going to talk about that some more.

  109. The parable that Jesus tells us in verses 3 to 9 is the famous parable that probably many of you have heard of already called the parable of the seed.

  110. Also variously called the parable of the soils or the parable of the sower.

  111. Each of those titles highlight an aspect of this parable that's important.

  112. A sower goes out to sow seeds.

  113. Some fall along the path and some birds come and peck at it and devour it.

  114. Other seeds fall on rocky ground and because there's such shallow depth of soil, it quickly finishes growing roots and then it sprouts up quickly.

  115. But because of the lack of depth of soil, it doesn't get enough water and as soon as the sun starts to shine on it, it withers away.

  116. And then there's another kind that falls among thorns.

  117. It grows okay, but as soon as it starts to grow, it gets choked up by the thorns around it and is unable to produce any fruit.

  118. And still other seeds fall into good soil which produce a bountiful harvest.

  119. We don't have to come up with our own allegorization or wreck our brains trying to figure out what this parable means

  120. because Jesus tells us exactly what it means in verses 14 to 20.

  121. And the first thing that he tells us about it is very important.

  122. He tells us what the seed is.

  123. He says in verse 14,

  124. The sower sows the word.

  125. Eight times in verses 14 to 20, we see the word word

  126. because it's the only seed.

  127. Well then what is the word?

  128. As Mark 7, 13 tells us, it's the word of God.

  129. The divinely inspired word of God, but even more specifically,

  130. the good news of Jesus Christ or the gospel of Jesus Christ,

  131. as it says in Mark 1, 14 and Mark 1, 1.

  132. The gospel of God, the word of God, the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  133. Because everything in the written scriptures point to and is fulfilled by Jesus,

  134. the person and work of Jesus Christ, the good news, the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  135. The good news of Jesus Christ is the news that the kingdom of God has come with the coming of Jesus.

  136. And because he has lived a perfect life, he has died for our sin and has been raised victoriously from the dead,

  137. those who trust in him, those who repent of their sins and believe in him,

  138. can enter the kingdom of God, which is the reign of God, the rule of God,

  139. where all his subjects belong.

  140. So how can people who are dead in their trespasses and sins be made alive again?

  141. How can those who are spiritually blind be made to see again?

  142. How can those people who are condemned as guilty because of their sin,

  143. justly so, be declared innocent or justified?

  144. The answer is in Jesus, by believing the word of Christ, the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  145. There is no other seed that produces eternal fruit in the lives of men and women than the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  146. Brothers and sisters, do you really believe this?

  147. There are many other things that people would have us believe could save people,

  148. could really help people, but the seed is not our own good works.

  149. The seed is not political or social activism.

  150. The seed is not even community.

  151. The seed is not mindfulness or meditation.

  152. The seed is not the sacraments.

  153. The seed is not education.

  154. The seed is not kindness.

  155. There's only one seed that saves people into eternal life,

  156. and that seed is the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  157. As spiritual farmers, then, what should we be sowing?

  158. What should our ministries and activities revolve around?

  159. There's only one thing for us to do but to sow the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  160. Jesus said in John 14, 6,

  161. I am the way and the truth and the life,

  162. and no one comes to the Father except through me.

  163. There are not many ways to get to God.

  164. There is only one way.

  165. There is salvation in no one else,

  166. for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.

  167. People of this world call on many different gods.

  168. People of this world call on many different religions.

  169. People call on many different names to save them,

  170. but there's only one name by which we must be saved,

  171. and that is the name of Jesus Christ.

  172. So that's the first thing that Jesus tells us about this parable.

  173. So don't believe it when someone tells you they found the key.

  174. They found the solution.

  175. A new method, a new teaching for a successful church.

  176. There's no other seed.

  177. The same seed that Christians have been planting for thousands of years,

  178. it's the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  179. Secondly, Jesus tells us what the various types of soil represent,

  180. namely people and their varying degrees of receptivity to the gospel.

  181. The first set of seeds are sown along the path that get consumed by the birds.

  182. The birds represent Satan and his evil minions, the demons,

  183. and these people hear the gospel,

  184. but Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown to them.

  185. If you have ever gone birding with a bag of millet or sunflower seeds,

  186. you know how quickly birds can gobble up those seeds.

  187. You scatter some on the ground and pitter-patter there right there to take it away.

  188. You've met these kinds of people before.

  189. You share the gospel with them,

  190. and it doesn't seem to stick at all.

  191. It appears to go in one ear and out the other because Satan takes it away.

  192. Because as it says in 2 Corinthians 4.4,

  193. the God of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers

  194. to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ.

  195. The second set of seeds are sown on rocky ground,

  196. a shallow soil with hard rock underneath where the seeds spring up quickly

  197. but wither away as quickly as when it came up as soon as the sun starts shining on it.

  198. These are the people who hear the word and immediately receive it with joy,

  199. however, because they have no root in themselves.

  200. When tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word,

  201. they immediately fall away.

  202. You probably also know these kinds of people.

  203. These are the bogus Christians

  204. who seeming conversions were not genuine.

  205. Like a seed planted on shallow, rocky soil that sprouts up quickly,

  206. these people initially received the gospel joyfully,

  207. which can be very exciting for us as we share the gospel with them

  208. and minister to them,

  209. but that soon leads to disappointment.

  210. And we have known the pain of this disappointment as a church

  211. because they never developed roots of faith.

  212. As soon as tribulation or persecution arises,

  213. they fall away.

  214. They lack deep conviction.

  215. They follow Christ only insofar as it is convenient

  216. and comfortable to do so.

  217. When the heat of withering criticism comes,

  218. when they are judged,

  219. when they are treated unfairly because of their faith in Christ,

  220. they do not persevere,

  221. but they deny the faith.

  222. The third set of seeds sown among thorns.

  223. This soil lets the seed grow some,

  224. at least for a little while,

  225. but as they grow,

  226. the thorns choke the plants

  227. so that they yield no grain.

  228. These are people who hear the word

  229. and appear on the surface at least to believe it,

  230. but Jesus explains the cares of the world

  231. and the deceitfulness of riches

  232. and the desires for other things

  233. enter in and choke the word

  234. and it proves unfruitful.

  235. So these are fruitless Christians.

  236. Every healthy tree bears good fruit

  237. and every tree that does not bear good fruit

  238. is cut down and thrown into the fire,

  239. as Jesus says in Matthew 7.

  240. We recognize true Christians by their fruits.

  241. So then the third type of soil

  242. represents people who are Christians in name only.

  243. So not true Christians,

  244. but nominal Christians.

  245. Christians who are in name only and not in reality.

  246. Instead of having heavenly purposes

  247. and heavenly priorities

  248. and eternal perspectives,

  249. they are preoccupied with the cares of this world,

  250. the anxieties of this world that is fading away.

  251. More than wanting to please God,

  252. they desire health and wealth and success.

  253. They are deceived by the comfort and status

  254. that money offers

  255. and their lives are characterized

  256. by the idolatry of covetousness.

  257. The first three types of soil are,

  258. they're all inhospitable to the seed of the gospel

  259. and they produce no harvest.

  260. But the fourth type is the good soil

  261. that produces a bumper crop,

  262. which is what farmers call

  263. an unusually abundant harvest.

  264. A tenfold harvest in those days in Palestine

  265. was considered to be abundant.

  266. But this is a supernatural harvest.

  267. It's 30-fold and 60-fold and 100-fold.

  268. In Genesis 26-12,

  269. Isaac sows in the land of Gerar

  270. and that same year reaps a hundredfold.

  271. And this is explained as a sign of divine blessing

  272. because it says the Lord blessed him.

  273. So likewise,

  274. this hundredfold gospel harvest

  275. is not something that we bring about

  276. in our own strength,

  277. but that it's a sign that God himself is at work

  278. blessing the proclamation of his word.

  279. The four different types of soil

  280. are differentiated by the varying levels

  281. of humble, obedient receptivity to the gospel.

  282. That's why Jesus begins the parable in verse three

  283. with this emphatic command,

  284. listen.

  285. That's why the verb listen or hear

  286. is a recurring key word in this passage.

  287. The word hear occurs 10 times in this passage.

  288. Again and again,

  289. this passage speaks of hearing the word

  290. and twice Jesus says,

  291. if anyone has ears to hear,

  292. let him hear.

  293. What does that mean?

  294. Jesus is not merely saying

  295. anyone who has ears could hear him.

  296. He's saying anyone who has ears to hear,

  297. anyone who is not merely gonna hear it,

  298. but actually listen to him,

  299. actually heed his word

  300. and accept his word.

  301. Those who have ears to hear it,

  302. those who have ears to hear

  303. and perceive it and understand it

  304. and believe it.

  305. Those are the people who are good soil,

  306. who hear the word and accept it

  307. and bear fruit.

  308. People who heed the word.

  309. Later in verse 24 to 25,

  310. Jesus reiterates this.

  311. He says,

  312. pay attention to what you hear.

  313. With the measure you use,

  314. it will be measured to you

  315. and still more will be added to you.

  316. For to the one who has,

  317. more will be given.

  318. And from the one who has not,

  319. even what he has will be taken away.

  320. In other words,

  321. if you pay attention

  322. and humbly hear the gospel of Jesus Christ

  323. and accept the grace of God given to you,

  324. offered to you in Jesus Christ,

  325. then even more grace will be given to you

  326. to understand more of God,

  327. to know more of him

  328. and to love and obey him.

  329. But if you don't pay attention

  330. and you reject the gospel,

  331. even the little truth

  332. that you are exposed to

  333. will recede and fade

  334. and will soon be a distant memory.

  335. All of this hinges on how

  336. you heed the word of Christ.

  337. This is why when it comes

  338. to the first three kinds of soil,

  339. when the verb here is used,

  340. in the Greek,

  341. it uses the aorist tense,

  342. which refers to a punctiliar

  343. just a thing that you do,

  344. something that happens

  345. at a particular point of time

  346. and is done.

  347. Something that happens once

  348. in an instant.

  349. It's like a snapshot,

  350. like a photo.

  351. However, when it comes

  352. to the fourth soil,

  353. the good soil,

  354. that same verb is used

  355. in the present tense

  356. to indicate ongoing action,

  357. continual listening,

  358. paying attention,

  359. and trusting.

  360. Jesus is here distinguishing

  361. those who hear

  362. in a casual and superficial way

  363. from those who heed his word.

  364. So we have to heed

  365. the word of Christ.

  366. So what voices

  367. or words

  368. are you paying attention to?

  369. Are you listening

  370. to the voice of tribulation

  371. or persecution

  372. of this world?

  373. Christianity is

  374. an irrational,

  375. regressive religion

  376. that was invented

  377. by people

  378. to oppress

  379. and control people.

  380. Christians are dangerous bigots

  381. that should be marginalized,

  382. maybe even criminalized.

  383. Are you withering

  384. under the heat

  385. of the slander

  386. of this world?

  387. Don't pay any heat

  388. to that.

  389. Instead,

  390. pay heat

  391. to the word

  392. of Christ.

  393. Or are you listening

  394. to the deceitful voice

  395. of riches

  396. and the desires

  397. for other things,

  398. the cares

  399. of this world?

  400. You will only be happy

  401. and fulfilled

  402. if you make

  403. this much money,

  404. if you have

  405. these kinds of jobs,

  406. if you buy

  407. these brands

  408. and wear

  409. these clothes,

  410. and if you live

  411. in these kinds

  412. of houses,

  413. and if you date

  414. or marry

  415. that kind of man

  416. or that kind of woman.

  417. Is that the voice

  418. you're listening to?

  419. Sacrifice?

  420. Submission?

  421. Forget about it.

  422. Safety and comfort

  423. and experiencing pleasure

  424. should be the highest

  425. name of life.

  426. Is that the voice

  427. you're listening to?

  428. Don't pay any heat

  429. to that.

  430. Pay attention

  431. to the word

  432. of Christ.

  433. Repent

  434. and believe

  435. in Jesus Christ

  436. for your salvation

  437. because the kingdom

  438. of God

  439. has come.

  440. Your eternal

  441. future

  442. depends on it.

  443. nowadays

  444. my youngest

  445. daughter

  446. has become aware

  447. that

  448. even when her dad

  449. is in the same room

  450. as her

  451. and I'm not wearing

  452. headphones

  453. and my ears are open

  454. and sometimes

  455. when she's speaking

  456. to me

  457. that I'm actually

  458. still not listening

  459. to her

  460. I tend to get

  461. really focused

  462. if I'm doing something

  463. and I'm focused

  464. in it

  465. like I will not

  466. hear her.

  467. Well,

  468. that's not true.

  469. I will hear her

  470. but it's like

  471. not registering

  472. and so she's

  473. kind of learned

  474. to get me

  475. out of that zone

  476. and so she now says

  477. Dad,

  478. you're not listening

  479. to me

  480. and at which point

  481. I perk up

  482. and then I start

  483. actually listening

  484. to her

  485. because she's right

  486. I wasn't listening

  487. to her.

  488. I think

  489. some of us here

  490. are probably hearing

  491. the gospel

  492. but not really

  493. hearing it.

  494. Not really

  495. paying attention

  496. and I implore you

  497. I say this

  498. earnestly

  499. because

  500. all four of these soils

  501. will probably be

  502. in this room.

  503. Are you paying attention?

  504. Are you heeding

  505. the word of Christ

  506. that alone

  507. leads you to Jesus

  508. who saves you?

  509. What word

  510. are you listening to?

  511. Is this word

  512. of Christ

  513. loud and clear

  514. in your ears

  515. or is it a faint

  516. static in the background

  517. while the voices

  518. of this world

  519. are blaring

  520. in your ears?

  521. tune in

  522. to the word

  523. of Christ

  524. turn it up

  525. several notches

  526. let the words

  527. of this world

  528. recede

  529. into the background

  530. tune that out

  531. your fruitfulness

  532. as a Christian

  533. depends on it.

  534. While there is

  535. a strong emphasis

  536. here in this chapter

  537. on human responsibility

  538. how we must

  539. heed the gospel

  540. there's also

  541. a strong emphasis

  542. here on divine

  543. sovereignty

  544. God

  545. he's here

  546. dividing the population

  547. and choosing

  548. his own people

  549. those who belong

  550. to him

  551. note how Jesus

  552. tells the parable

  553. in verses 3 to 9

  554. and then explains it

  555. in verses 13 to 20

  556. which leaves

  557. verses 10 to 12

  558. right in the middle

  559. this is a literary device

  560. that people have coined

  561. the Markan sandwich

  562. because Mark

  563. is so fond of it

  564. he uses it often

  565. the meat

  566. as in sandwiches

  567. is the most important part

  568. that's

  569. what gives it flavor

  570. I mean bread's good too

  571. but that's

  572. this is the most important part

  573. surrounded by two

  574. matching sandwich buns

  575. which surround

  576. and bring attention

  577. to what's in the middle

  578. that's the function

  579. of this literary device

  580. and what is in the middle

  581. is this

  582. verses 10 to 12

  583. and when Jesus

  584. was alone

  585. those around him

  586. with the 12

  587. asked him about

  588. the parables

  589. and he said to them

  590. to you

  591. has been given

  592. the secret

  593. of the kingdom of God

  594. but for those outside

  595. everything is in parables

  596. so that

  597. they may indeed see

  598. but not perceive

  599. and may indeed hear

  600. but not understand

  601. lest they should turn

  602. and be forgiven

  603. did I read that correctly?

  604. let that sink in

  605. for a moment

  606. I don't always succeed

  607. in this

  608. but as a preacher

  609. I'm at least trying

  610. to speak as plainly

  611. as possible

  612. every time I speak

  613. I try to avoid

  614. maybe

  615. theological jargon

  616. that might be

  617. not familiar to people

  618. and if I do use them

  619. I try to explain it

  620. and that's what

  621. we would expect

  622. Jesus to do

  623. I mean Jesus

  624. don't you love people

  625. and didn't you come

  626. to save the world

  627. that God so loved the world

  628. he sent his only son

  629. so shouldn't you

  630. make everybody

  631. be able to understand you

  632. as easily

  633. and plainly as possible

  634. that's what we expect

  635. Jesus to do

  636. but no

  637. that's not what he does

  638. to those who are

  639. around him

  640. with the twelve

  641. Jesus speaks plainly

  642. and not in parables

  643. because to them

  644. has been given

  645. the secret

  646. of the kingdom of God

  647. who gave them

  648. this secret

  649. it doesn't tell us

  650. this is what the Bible

  651. grammarians call

  652. the divine passive

  653. when there's a passive verb

  654. but there's no subject

  655. the subject

  656. is

  657. the assumed subject

  658. is God

  659. God is the one

  660. who gives them

  661. this secret

  662. of the kingdom

  663. and so to them

  664. Jesus speaks plainly

  665. and explains the meaning

  666. of the parables

  667. however to those

  668. who are on the outside

  669. Jesus speaks in riddles

  670. he speaks in parables

  671. so that they would

  672. see without perceiving

  673. so that they would

  674. hear without

  675. understanding

  676. because he doesn't

  677. he

  678. less they

  679. turn and be forgiven

  680. this is a pronouncement

  681. of God's judgment

  682. the quote is taken

  683. from Isaiah 6-9

  684. when prophet Isaiah

  685. is commissioned

  686. by God

  687. to go

  688. and preach

  689. preach repentance

  690. but when God

  691. tells Isaiah

  692. to go

  693. he says

  694. when you preach

  695. these people

  696. will listen to you

  697. and repent

  698. no

  699. he tells them

  700. go and preach

  701. to them

  702. they will not

  703. repent

  704. they will not

  705. listen to you

  706. so your preaching

  707. will make them

  708. more blind

  709. more hardened

  710. it's a confirmation

  711. of God's judgment

  712. theologian James Edwards

  713. makes the insightful comment

  714. that Jesus' parables

  715. in the gospel of Mark

  716. and in the other

  717. synoptic gospels

  718. function

  719. like the pillar

  720. of fire and cloud

  721. in the book of Exodus

  722. that separated

  723. the Israelites

  724. from the Egyptians

  725. at the crossing

  726. of the Red Sea

  727. in Exodus 14

  728. on the one hand

  729. that pillar of cloud

  730. served to guide

  731. the Israelites

  732. but on the other hand

  733. it served to confuse

  734. and impede

  735. the Egyptians

  736. it lights the way

  737. for the Israelites

  738. it darkens the way

  739. for the Egyptians

  740. likewise

  741. Jesus' parables

  742. reveal the will of God

  743. to his people

  744. but conceal

  745. it from those

  746. who do not belong

  747. to him

  748. this shows

  749. that the fruitfulness

  750. of the gospel seed

  751. the harvest

  752. the salvation

  753. of the hearer

  754. is ultimately

  755. the sovereign work

  756. of God

  757. over which we have

  758. no control

  759. as Jesus says

  760. in John 9

  761. 39

  762. for judgment

  763. I came into this world

  764. that those who do not

  765. see may see

  766. and those who see

  767. may become blind

  768. many people

  769. who thought

  770. they were

  771. on the inside

  772. the Pharisees

  773. and the scribes

  774. the legalists

  775. people who are pursuing

  776. God with works

  777. righteousness

  778. they think

  779. that they are in

  780. but they are actually out

  781. they thought

  782. they saw

  783. but they are actually

  784. blind

  785. and then many

  786. who are

  787. were outcasts

  788. many who thought

  789. they were on the outside

  790. looking in

  791. become part of

  792. this inner circle

  793. but for us

  794. as hearers

  795. of the word

  796. how can we know

  797. what kind of soil

  798. we ourselves are

  799. that's not

  800. our prerogative

  801. to know

  802. but what we can do

  803. is heed

  804. the gospel

  805. because it's the gospel

  806. that draws

  807. the line

  808. in the sand

  809. note again

  810. the contrast

  811. between the very

  812. large crowd

  813. that's what he said

  814. in verse 1

  815. very large crowd

  816. gathered about Jesus

  817. and then now

  818. the much smaller

  819. inner circle

  820. that remains

  821. in verse 10

  822. when Jesus was alone

  823. there around him

  824. with the 12

  825. those around him

  826. with the 12

  827. asked him

  828. about the parables

  829. Jesus was never

  830. in the gospel

  831. was giddy

  832. about the very

  833. large crowd

  834. that was gathering

  835. around him

  836. and following him

  837. around

  838. he wasn't trying

  839. to speak

  840. on subjects

  841. that will draw

  842. a crowd

  843. or appease them

  844. or appeal to them

  845. and keep them engaged

  846. no he spoke

  847. in parables

  848. that confused them

  849. in order to draw

  850. a distinction

  851. between the crowd

  852. and the elect

  853. the disciples

  854. so don't be discouraged

  855. if large crowds

  856. are not flocking

  857. to us

  858. to hear the message

  859. of the gospel

  860. Jesus is often seen

  861. whittling down the crowds

  862. throughout his ministry

  863. Jesus rebukes the crowd

  864. following him

  865. in John 6 26

  866. telling them

  867. that they are not

  868. actually seeking him

  869. but rather they've come

  870. because they had

  871. their fill of the loaves

  872. because Jesus fed them

  873. with the miracle

  874. by multiplying

  875. the five loaves

  876. of bread

  877. and two fish

  878. to feed 5,000

  879. and then after telling

  880. them that

  881. he tells them further

  882. that he is the bread

  883. of heaven

  884. that came down

  885. from heaven

  886. and that they need

  887. to eat his body

  888. and drink his blood

  889. in order to have

  890. eternal life

  891. that's not a very

  892. popular message

  893. just imagining it

  894. thinking about it

  895. makes you want to

  896. wretch

  897. Jesus spoke in that way

  898. intentionally

  899. so that he says

  900. in John 6 66 to 68

  901. after this

  902. many of his disciples

  903. turned back

  904. and no longer

  905. walked with him

  906. so Jesus said

  907. to the twelve

  908. do you want

  909. to go away

  910. as well

  911. Simon Peter answered

  912. them

  913. Lord to whom

  914. shall we go

  915. you have the words

  916. of eternal life

  917. there is the inner circle

  918. those who recognize

  919. and hear

  920. and accept

  921. the word

  922. of Christ

  923. then there are

  924. outsiders who don't

  925. who only follow

  926. Jesus casually

  927. to satisfy

  928. their curiosity

  929. it says

  930. a few verses

  931. before that

  932. in John 6 64

  933. for Jesus

  934. knew

  935. from the beginning

  936. who those

  937. were

  938. who did not

  939. believe

  940. and who it

  941. was

  942. who would

  943. betray him

  944. so he knew

  945. who would

  946. believe

  947. and he knew

  948. who those

  949. who would

  950. not believe

  951. already from

  952. the beginning

  953. of Christ

  954. so will you

  955. heed

  956. the word

  957. of Christ

  958. will you

  959. remain

  960. with Jesus

  961. and believe

  962. in his word

  963. will you

  964. follow him

  965. even when

  966. the crowd

  967. is dispersed

  968. when following

  969. Jesus is no

  970. longer popular

  971. when tribulations

  972. and persecutions

  973. arise

  974. will you

  975. renounce

  976. the cares

  977. of this world

  978. the deceitfulness

  979. of riches

  980. and the desires

  981. for other things

  982. in order to

  983. follow Jesus

  984. that's how you

  985. know whether

  986. you are in

  987. or out

  988. that you are

  989. heeding

  990. the gospel

  991. of Jesus

  992. Christ

  993. so this

  994. parable teaches

  995. us about

  996. the seed

  997. and about

  998. the soils

  999. it also has

  1000. something

  1001. teaches about

  1002. the sower

  1003. though it

  1004. doesn't actually

  1005. say much

  1006. about him

  1007. first and

  1008. foremost

  1009. the ultimate

  1010. sower here

  1011. is Jesus

  1012. at the beginning

  1013. of Jesus

  1014. ministry

  1015. in Mark

  1016. 138

  1017. he spoke

  1018. of the

  1019. mandate

  1020. that the

  1021. father

  1022. had given

  1023. him

  1024. to preach

  1025. the gospel

  1026. saying

  1027. let us

  1028. go on

  1029. to the

  1030. next

  1031. town

  1032. that I

  1033. may

  1034. preach

  1035. there

  1036. also

  1037. for

  1038. that

  1039. is

  1040. why

  1041. I

  1042. came

  1043. out

  1044. Jesus

  1045. came

  1046. out

  1047. to preach

  1048. the gospel

  1049. and that

  1050. exact same

  1051. verb is used

  1052. at the beginning

  1053. of this

  1054. parable

  1055. in verse

  1056. 3

  1057. behold a

  1058. sower

  1059. went

  1060. out

  1061. to sow

  1062. Jesus

  1063. is the

  1064. sower

  1065. who came

  1066. down

  1067. from heaven

  1068. from the

  1069. presence

  1070. of the

  1071. father

  1072. to

  1073. sow

  1074. the seed

  1075. of the

  1076. gospel

  1077. more

  1078. more

  1079. because

  1080. he

  1081. is

  1082. his

  1083. work

  1084. his

  1085. personal

  1086. work

  1087. is

  1088. the

  1089. gospel

  1090. more

  1091. over

  1092. in

  1093. the

  1094. old

  1095. testament

  1096. passages

  1097. like

  1098. Isaiah

  1099. 9

  1100. 3

  1101. and

  1102. Psalm

  1103. 126

  1104. 6

  1105. the

  1106. harvest

  1107. is a

  1108. metaphor

  1109. for the

  1110. in

  1111. breaking

  1112. of the

  1113. kingdom

  1114. of God

  1115. the

  1116. inauguration

  1117. the

  1118. beginning

  1119. of the

  1120. kingdom

  1121. of God

  1122. so

  1123. this

  1124. bumper

  1125. crop

  1126. of

  1127. hundred

  1128. fold

  1129. harvest

  1130. is a

  1131. sure

  1132. sign

  1133. that

  1134. the

  1135. kingdom

  1136. of

  1137. God

  1138. is

  1139. now

  1140. here

  1141. because

  1142. Jesus

  1143. has

  1144. come

  1145. so

  1146. Jesus

  1147. says

  1148. of

  1149. course

  1150. you

  1151. wouldn't

  1152. light

  1153. a

  1154. lamp

  1155. whose

  1156. purpose

  1157. it is

  1158. to

  1159. give

  1160. light

  1161. and

  1162. dispel

  1163. the

  1164. darkness

  1165. you

  1166. would

  1167. not

  1168. put

  1169. it

  1170. under

  1171. a

  1172. basket

  1173. or

  1174. under

  1175. a

  1176. bed

  1177. you

  1178. put

  1179. it

  1180. on

  1181. a

  1182. stand

  1183. and

  1184. the

  1185. lamp

  1186. is

  1187. frequently

  1188. used

  1189. as

  1190. a

  1191. metaphor

  1192. in

  1193. scripture

  1194. of

  1195. God

  1196. and

  1197. of

  1198. his

  1199. word

  1200. and

  1201. here

  1202. actually

  1203. in

  1204. the

  1205. original

  1206. Greek

  1207. there

  1208. is

  1209. a

  1210. definite

  1211. article

  1212. so

  1213. it

  1214. doesn't

  1215. say

  1216. it's

  1217. of

  1218. when

  1219. a

  1220. lamp

  1221. is

  1222. brought

  1223. in

  1224. it

  1225. says

  1226. the

  1227. lamp

  1228. it's

  1229. referring

  1230. to

  1231. the

  1232. lamp

  1233. of

  1234. Jesus

  1235. Christ

  1236. the

  1237. light

  1238. of

  1239. the

  1240. world

  1241. who

  1242. said

  1243. I

  1244. am

  1245. the

  1246. light

  1247. of

  1248. the

  1249. world

  1250. whoever

  1251. follows

  1252. me

  1253. will

  1254. not

  1255. walk

  1256. in

  1257. darkness

  1258. but

  1259. will

  1260. have

  1261. the

  1262. light

  1263. of

  1264. life

  1265. so

  1266. because

  1267. God

  1268. the

  1269. prime

  1270. sower

  1271. has

  1272. come

  1273. in

  1274. Jesus

  1275. Christ

  1276. the

  1277. kingdom

  1278. of

  1279. God

  1280. is

  1281. now

  1282. here

  1283. and

  1284. we

  1285. can't

  1286. expect

  1287. the

  1288. harvest

  1289. so

  1290. he

  1291. is

  1292. the

  1293. first

  1294. sower

  1295. the

  1296. prime

  1297. sower

  1298. but

  1299. as

  1300. those

  1301. who

  1302. follow

  1303. in

  1304. the

  1305. footsteps

  1306. of

  1307. this

  1308. prime

  1309. sower

  1310. there

  1311. is

  1312. a

  1313. lesson

  1314. for

  1315. us

  1316. here

  1317. as

  1318. well

  1319. since

  1320. we

  1321. are

  1322. commanded

  1323. to

  1324. sow

  1325. the

  1326. gospel

  1327. seed

  1328. all

  1329. around

  1330. us

  1331. we

  1332. can

  1333. see

  1334. this

  1335. clearly

  1336. in

  1337. the

  1338. parable

  1339. of

  1340. the

  1341. growing

  1342. seed

  1343. in

  1344. verses

  1345. 26

  1346. to

  1347. 28

  1348. when

  1349. the

  1350. farmer

  1351. who

  1352. sows

  1353. is

  1354. clearly

  1355. not

  1356. Jesus

  1357. because

  1358. it

  1359. says

  1360. that

  1361. this

  1362. sower

  1363. knows

  1364. not

  1365. how

  1366. the

  1367. seed

  1368. grows

  1369. that

  1370. can't

  1371. be

  1372. Jesus

  1373. because

  1374. Jesus

  1375. knows

  1376. everything

  1377. he

  1378. knows

  1379. exactly

  1380. how

  1381. the

  1382. seeds

  1383. grow

  1384. he

  1385. already

  1386. knows

  1387. beforehand

  1388. which

  1389. seeds

  1390. will

  1391. grow

  1392. and

  1393. which

  1394. seeds

  1395. will

  1396. not

  1397. grow

  1398. so

  1399. in

  1400. that

  1401. parable

  1402. clearly

  1403. the

  1404. sower

  1405. is

  1406. us

  1407. the

  1408. followers

  1409. of

  1410. Jesus

  1411. so

  1412. then

  1413. what

  1414. can

  1415. we

  1416. learn

  1417. as

  1418. sowers

  1419. of

  1420. the

  1421. gospel

  1422. first

  1423. there

  1424. is

  1425. note

  1426. that

  1427. there

  1428. is

  1429. no

  1430. discussion

  1431. of

  1432. how

  1433. to

  1434. become

  1435. a

  1436. better

  1437. sower

  1438. the

  1439. harvest

  1440. the

  1441. fruitfulness

  1442. of the

  1443. crop

  1444. does

  1445. not

  1446. depend

  1447. on

  1448. the

  1449. intelligence

  1450. or

  1451. the

  1452. creativity

  1453. or

  1454. the

  1455. eloquence

  1456. of

  1457. the

  1458. sower

  1459. it

  1460. depends

  1461. on

  1462. the

  1463. receptivity

  1464. of

  1465. the

  1466. soil

  1467. and

  1468. even

  1469. more

  1470. ultimately

  1471. on

  1472. the

  1473. sovereignty

  1474. of

  1475. the

  1476. God

  1477. who

  1478. gives

  1479. the

  1480. growth

  1481. so

  1482. we

  1483. should

  1484. not

  1485. get

  1486. insecure

  1487. or

  1488. worried

  1489. when

  1490. some

  1491. seeds

  1492. are

  1493. plucked

  1494. away

  1495. by

  1496. birds

  1497. or

  1498. withered

  1499. away

  1500. by

  1501. the

  1502. heat

  1503. or

  1504. choked

  1505. out

  1506. by

  1507. the

  1508. thorns

  1509. that

  1510. does

  1511. not

  1512. mean

  1513. that

  1514. we

  1515. should

  1516. go

  1517. back

  1518. to

  1519. the

  1520. drawing

  1521. board

  1522. and

  1523. genetically

  1524. modify

  1525. the

  1526. seed

  1527. so

  1528. that

  1529. it's

  1530. a

  1531. little

  1532. bit

  1533. more

  1534. fruitful

  1535. so

  1536. it

  1537. has

  1538. better

  1539. yield

  1540. no

  1541. there's

  1542. nothing

  1543. wrong

  1544. with

  1545. the

  1546. seed

  1547. and

  1548. we

  1549. should

  1550. expect

  1551. rejection

  1552. we

  1553. should

  1554. expect

  1555. disappointment

  1556. because

  1557. Jesus

  1558. tells

  1559. us

  1560. here

  1561. that

  1562. we

  1563. will

  1564. get

  1565. all

  1566. these

  1567. responses

  1568. to

  1569. the

  1570. proclamation

  1571. of the

  1572. gospel

  1573. the

  1574. goal

  1575. isn't

  1576. to

  1577. become

  1578. more

  1579. successful

  1580. sowers

  1581. who

  1582. get

  1583. a

  1584. higher

  1585. percentage

  1586. yield

  1587. rate

  1588. no

  1589. the

  1590. goal

  1591. is

  1592. to

  1593. be

  1594. faithful

  1595. sowers

  1596. sowing

  1597. the

  1598. same

  1599. seed

  1600. over

  1601. and

  1602. over

  1603. again

  1604. year

  1605. after

  1606. year

  1607. generation

  1608. after

  1609. generation

  1610. regardless

  1611. of the

  1612. response

  1613. lack

  1614. of

  1615. conversions

  1616. is

  1617. not

  1618. failed

  1619. evangelism

  1620. because

  1621. the

  1622. conversions

  1623. are not

  1624. up to

  1625. us

  1626. lack

  1627. of

  1628. gospel

  1629. conversations

  1630. is

  1631. failed

  1632. evangelism

  1633. we

  1634. only

  1635. fail

  1636. when

  1637. we

  1638. don't

  1639. share

  1640. the

  1641. gospel

  1642. at

  1643. all

  1644. so

  1645. don't

  1646. be

  1647. afraid

  1648. of

  1649. the

  1650. responses

  1651. don't

  1652. be

  1653. discouraged

  1654. that

  1655. some

  1656. people

  1657. fall

  1658. away

  1659. these

  1660. things

  1661. happen

  1662. but

  1663. you

  1664. must

  1665. not

  1666. be

  1667. discouraged

  1668. because

  1669. you

  1670. have

  1671. to

  1672. keep

  1673. sowing

  1674. let

  1675. us

  1676. not

  1677. grow

  1678. weary

  1679. of

  1680. doing

  1681. good

  1682. for

  1683. in

  1684. due

  1685. season

  1686. we

  1687. will

  1688. reap

  1689. if

  1690. we

  1691. do

  1692. not

  1693. give

  1694. up

  1695. so

  1696. we

  1697. should

  1698. be

  1699. faithful

  1700. sowers

  1701. and

  1702. we

  1703. should

  1704. also

  1705. be

  1706. liberal

  1707. sowers

  1708. I

  1709. don't

  1710. mean

  1711. that

  1712. politically

  1713. but

  1714. be

  1715. generous

  1716. sowers

  1717. lavish

  1718. sowers

  1719. an

  1720. aspect

  1721. of

  1722. this

  1723. parable

  1724. that

  1725. is

  1726. often

  1727. missed

  1728. is

  1729. that

  1730. this

  1731. farmer

  1732. is

  1733. downright

  1734. indiscriminate

  1735. in his

  1736. sowing

  1737. imagine

  1738. you're

  1739. a

  1740. farmer

  1741. what

  1742. kind

  1743. of

  1744. a

  1745. farmer

  1746. sows

  1747. precious

  1748. seeds

  1749. on

  1750. paths

  1751. where

  1752. it

  1753. gets

  1754. trampled

  1755. and

  1756. birds

  1757. will

  1758. come

  1759. and

  1760. pluck

  1761. away

  1762. the

  1763. seed

  1764. there's

  1765. like

  1766. no

  1767. soil

  1768. there

  1769. at

  1770. all

  1771. what

  1772. kind

  1773. of

  1774. a

  1775. farmer

  1776. sows

  1777. seeds

  1778. on

  1779. rocky

  1780. ground

  1781. hey

  1782. that

  1783. looks

  1784. like

  1785. a

  1786. great

  1787. place

  1788. to

  1789. scatter

  1790. my

  1791. seed

  1792. or

  1793. among

  1794. thorns

  1795. these

  1796. thorns

  1797. will

  1798. assist

  1799. my

  1800. plants

  1801. to

  1802. grow

  1803. fruitful

  1804. no

  1805. sensible

  1806. farmer

  1807. does

  1808. that

  1809. but

  1810. what

  1811. does

  1812. this

  1813. show

  1814. it

  1815. reflects

  1816. the

  1817. lavish

  1818. generosity

  1819. of

  1820. God

  1821. God

  1822. knows

  1823. he

  1824. is

  1825. predestined

  1826. he

  1827. knows

  1828. who

  1829. will

  1830. believe

  1831. he

  1832. knows

  1833. who

  1834. will

  1835. not

  1836. believe

  1837. and

  1838. yet

  1839. and

  1840. yet

  1841. the

  1842. invitation

  1843. is

  1844. universal

  1845. sow

  1846. seeds

  1847. everywhere

  1848. on

  1849. rocks

  1850. among

  1851. thorns

  1852. and

  1853. even

  1854. on

  1855. the

  1856. streets

  1857. it's

  1858. not

  1859. our

  1860. prerogative

  1861. to know

  1862. what

  1863. kinds

  1864. of

  1865. soils

  1866. people

  1867. are

  1868. it's

  1869. not

  1870. our

  1871. place

  1872. to

  1873. presume

  1874. who

  1875. is

  1876. open

  1877. or

  1878. receptive

  1879. to

  1880. the

  1881. gospel

  1882. or

  1883. not

  1884. our

  1885. role

  1886. is

  1887. to

  1888. simply

  1889. scatter

  1890. the

  1891. seeds

  1892. so

  1893. do

  1894. it

  1895. indiscriminately

  1896. at

  1897. the

  1898. cafe

  1899. on

  1900. the

  1901. plane

  1902. in

  1903. your

  1904. neighborhood

  1905. back

  1906. at

  1907. your

  1908. parents

  1909. house

  1910. wherever

  1911. you

  1912. go

  1913. scatter

  1914. the

  1915. seed

  1916. reflect

  1917. the

  1918. generosity

  1919. of

  1920. God

  1921. scatter

  1922. it

  1923. hoping

  1924. that

  1925. somewhere

  1926. you

  1927. will

  1928. find

  1929. good

  1930. soil

  1931. where

  1932. it

  1933. will

  1934. yield

  1935. that

  1936. abundant

  1937. harvest

  1938. trusting

  1939. that

  1940. ultimately

  1941. God's

  1942. the

  1943. one

  1944. who

  1945. gives

  1946. the

  1947. growth

  1948. and

  1949. that

  1950. brings

  1951. us

  1952. to

  1953. my

  1954. final

  1955. point

  1956. God

  1957. grows

  1958. the

  1959. word

  1960. read

  1961. verses

  1962. 26

  1963. to

  1964. 29

  1965. and

  1966. he

  1967. said

  1968. the

  1969. kingdom

  1970. of

  1971. God

  1972. is as

  1973. if

  1974. a

  1975. man

  1976. just

  1977. scatter

  1978. seed

  1979. on

  1980. the

  1981. ground

  1982. he

  1983. sleeps

  1984. and

  1985. rises

  1986. night

  1987. and

  1988. day

  1989. and

  1990. the

  1991. seed

  1992. sprouts

  1993. and

  1994. grows

  1995. he

  1996. knows

  1997. not

  1998. how

  1999. the

  2000. earth

  2001. produces

  2002. by

  2003. itself

  2004. first

  2005. the

  2006. blade

  2007. then

  2008. the

  2009. year

  2010. then

  2011. the

  2012. full

  2013. grain

  2014. in

  2015. the

  2016. year

  2017. but

  2018. when

  2019. the

  2020. grain

  2021. is

  2022. ripe

  2023. at

  2024. once

  2025. he

  2026. puts

  2027. in

  2028. the

  2029. sickle

  2030. because

  2031. the

  2032. harvest

  2033. has

  2034. come

  2035. this

  2036. is a

  2037. wonderful

  2038. parable

  2039. it's only

  2040. found here

  2041. in the

  2042. gospel of

  2043. Mark

  2044. it's

  2045. one that

  2046. God

  2047. spoke to

  2048. me

  2049. about

  2050. at the

  2051. beginning

  2052. of our

  2053. church

  2054. plant

  2055. and

  2056. revisiting

  2057. again

  2058. today

  2059. I love

  2060. the

  2061. contrast

  2062. in

  2063. verse

  2064. 27

  2065. between

  2066. what the

  2067. farmer

  2068. is doing

  2069. and

  2070. what the

  2071. seed

  2072. is

  2073. doing

  2074. the

  2075. farmer

  2076. sleeps

  2077. and

  2078. rises

  2079. he's

  2080. just

  2081. passing

  2082. time

  2083. once

  2084. he

  2085. scattered

  2086. the

  2087. seed

  2088. he

  2089. passes

  2090. time

  2091. he

  2092. sleeps

  2093. and

  2094. he

  2095. rises

  2096. but

  2097. the

  2098. seed

  2099. is

  2100. sprouting

  2101. and

  2102. growing

  2103. there's

  2104. no

  2105. connection

  2106. there

  2107. between

  2108. what the

  2109. farmer

  2110. is doing

  2111. and what

  2112. the seed

  2113. is doing

  2114. and that's

  2115. the

  2116. point

  2117. the

  2118. farmer

  2119. does

  2120. not

  2121. know

  2122. how

  2123. the

  2124. seed

  2125. grows

  2126. all

  2127. he's

  2128. done

  2129. is

  2130. scatter

  2131. the

  2132. seed

  2133. he

  2134. says

  2135. in

  2136. verse

  2137. 28

  2138. the

  2139. earth

  2140. produces

  2141. by

  2142. itself

  2143. in

  2144. Greek

  2145. that

  2146. word

  2147. is

  2148. automatic

  2149. that's

  2150. where

  2151. we

  2152. get

  2153. the

  2154. word

  2155. automatic

  2156. the

  2157. earth

  2158. produces

  2159. automatically

  2160. by

  2161. itself

  2162. of

  2163. its

  2164. own

  2165. accord

  2166. first

  2167. the

  2168. blade

  2169. and

  2170. then

  2171. the

  2172. ear

  2173. and

  2174. then

  2175. the

  2176. full

  2177. grain

  2178. in

  2179. the

  2180. ear

  2181. and

  2182. what

  2183. has

  2184. the

  2185. farmer

  2186. done

  2187. nothing

  2188. he

  2189. scattered

  2190. the

  2191. seed

  2192. and

  2193. then

  2194. he

  2195. waited

  2196. he

  2197. passed

  2198. the

  2199. time

  2200. he's

  2201. sleeping

  2202. and

  2203. rising

  2204. so

  2205. don't

  2206. be

  2207. discouraged

  2208. when

  2209. there's

  2210. more

  2211. of the

  2212. same

  2213. you're

  2214. sowing

  2215. the

  2216. same

  2217. seed

  2218. scattering

  2219. the

  2220. same

  2221. seed

  2222. again

  2223. and

  2224. again

  2225. and

  2226. again

  2227. and

  2228. then

  2229. you

  2230. watch

  2231. and

  2232. you

  2233. wait

  2234. and

  2235. you

  2236. sleep

  2237. and

  2238. you

  2239. rise

  2240. how

  2241. ordinary

  2242. is

  2243. that

  2244. but

  2245. that's

  2246. precisely

  2247. what

  2248. God

  2249. compared

  2250. what

  2251. Jesus

  2252. compares

  2253. the

  2254. kingdom

  2255. of

  2256. God

  2257. to

  2258. sowing

  2259. seeds

  2260. and

  2261. it

  2262. grows

  2263. God's

  2264. the

  2265. one

  2266. who

  2267. gives

  2268. the

  2269. growth

  2270. as

  2271. Paul

  2272. says

  2273. in

  2274. 1 Corinthians

  2275. 3

  2276. neither

  2277. he

  2278. who

  2279. plants

  2280. nor

  2281. he

  2282. who

  2283. waters

  2284. is

  2285. anything

  2286. but

  2287. only

  2288. God

  2289. who

  2290. gives

  2291. the

  2292. growth

  2293. God

  2294. works

  2295. in

  2296. this

  2297. way

  2298. so

  2299. that

  2300. he

  2301. receives

  2302. all

  2303. the

  2304. glory

  2305. God

  2306. has

  2307. intentionally

  2308. cut

  2309. us

  2310. as

  2311. sowers

  2312. laborers

  2313. cut

  2314. us

  2315. out

  2316. of

  2317. the

  2318. entire

  2319. of

  2320. the

  2321. majority

  2322. of

  2323. that

  2324. production

  2325. process

  2326. to

  2327. instill

  2328. in us

  2329. the

  2330. reality

  2331. the

  2332. truth

  2333. that

  2334. he

  2335. is

  2336. the

  2337. one

  2338. who

  2339. gives

  2340. the

  2341. growth

  2342. and

  2343. he

  2344. is

  2345. the

  2346. one

  2347. who

  2348. deserves

  2349. the

  2350. glory

  2351. so

  2352. then

  2353. if

  2354. we

  2355. do

  2356. this

  2357. do

  2358. it

  2359. this

  2360. way

  2361. if

  2362. we

  2363. work

  2364. this

  2365. way

  2366. and

  2367. that's

  2368. the

  2369. goal

  2370. then

  2371. my

  2372. hope

  2373. is

  2374. that

  2375. when

  2376. we

  2377. grow

  2378. when

  2379. people

  2380. come

  2381. to

  2382. faith

  2383. in

  2384. Christ

  2385. as

  2386. they

  2387. have

  2388. done

  2389. over

  2390. the

  2391. years

  2392. no

  2393. one

  2394. else

  2395. can

  2396. take

  2397. the

  2398. credit

  2399. no

  2400. one's

  2401. gonna

  2402. come

  2403. asking

  2404. us

  2405. what

  2406. was

  2407. your

  2408. grand

  2409. strategy

  2410. what

  2411. methodology

  2412. did

  2413. you

  2414. use

  2415. what

  2416. did

  2417. you

  2418. do

  2419. to

  2420. make

  2421. this

  2422. happen

  2423. no

  2424. one's

  2425. gonna

  2426. ask

  2427. us

  2428. those

  2429. questions

  2430. because

  2431. all

  2432. we

  2433. did

  2434. we

  2435. scattered

  2436. the

  2437. seed

  2438. and

  2439. we

  2440. slept

  2441. and

  2442. we

  2443. rose

  2444. up

  2445. God

  2446. gave

  2447. the

  2448. growth

  2449. so

  2450. that's

  2451. our

  2452. simple

  2453. mission

  2454. church

  2455. we

  2456. make

  2457. we

  2458. glorify

  2459. God

  2460. by making

  2461. disciples

  2462. of Jesus

  2463. Christ

  2464. by the

  2465. power

  2466. of the

  2467. Holy

  2468. Spirit

  2469. and

  2470. the

  2471. main

  2472. tool

  2473. in

  2474. our

  2475. discipling

  2476. is

  2477. the

  2478. word

  2479. of

  2480. Christ

  2481. we

  2482. sow

  2483. it

  2484. liberally

  2485. trusting

  2486. that

  2487. God

  2488. grows

  2489. it

  2490. even

  2491. though

  2492. we

  2493. know

  2494. not

  2495. how

  2496. so

  2497. let's

  2498. be

  2499. an

  2500. ordinary

  2501. church

  2502. a

  2503. dependent

  2504. church

  2505. that's

  2506. daily

  2507. doing

  2508. the

  2509. ordinary

  2510. work

  2511. of

  2512. sowing

  2513. waiting

  2514. on

  2515. God

  2516. and

  2517. trusting

  2518. looking

  2519. to

  2520. him

  2521. to

  2522. give

  2523. us

  2524. the

  2525. growth

  2526. I

  2527. think

  2528. that's

  2529. what

  2530. we've

  2531. been

  2532. doing

  2533. over

  2534. the

  2535. last

  2536. seven

  2537. years

  2538. as

  2539. long

  2540. as

  2541. I'm

  2542. here

  2543. hopefully

  2544. that's

  2545. what

  2546. we

  2547. do

  2548. I'm

  2549. grateful

  2550. that you

  2551. guys

  2552. are

  2553. here

  2554. as

  2555. co-laborers

  2556. with me

  2557. to do

  2558. that

  2559. let's

  2560. pray

  2561. together

  2562. father

  2563. father

  2564. thank you

  2565. for

  2566. saving

  2567. us

  2568. and we

  2569. know that

  2570. the salvation

  2571. is

  2572. a gift

  2573. from

  2574. you

  2575. not our

  2576. own doing

  2577. not a

  2578. result of

  2579. the works

  2580. so that

  2581. no one

  2582. may boast

  2583. you have

  2584. saved us

  2585. in this

  2586. way

  2587. and now

  2588. you

  2589. use us

  2590. in this

  2591. way

  2592. you save

  2593. others

  2594. in this

  2595. same

  2596. way

  2597. and we

  2598. want you

  2599. to work

  2600. this way

  2601. we want you

  2602. to save

  2603. this way

  2604. because we

  2605. want you

  2606. to receive

  2607. all the

  2608. glory

  2609. Lord

  2610. help us

  2611. to sow

  2612. faithfully

  2613. encourage

  2614. those who

  2615. are in

  2616. our midst

  2617. brothers and

  2618. sisters who

  2619. are discouraged

  2620. remind them

  2621. of these

  2622. precious

  2623. truths

  2624. so they

  2625. can continue

  2626. to trust

  2627. continue to

  2628. heed your

  2629. word

  2630. and sow

  2631. it

  2632. in Jesus

  2633. name

  2634. we pray

  2635. amen
