  1. wouldn't recommend going to any

  2. restaurants today.

  3. On Mother's Day, my dad's restaurant had

  4. people lined up about 30 or 40 outside

  5. to get in for all day

  6. and we sat 200 people in our restaurant.

  7. Mother's Day was always always a busy

  8. busy time.

  9. But it was fun feeding all those people.

  10. We are continuing in our study of great

  11. texts

  12. in the Bible.

  13. And I'm taking a text from 2 Samuel 6

  14. and 1st Chronicles 13. It's two accounts

  15. of the same story,

  16. but and they're long. It's a long read,

  17. so you're going to have to uh get a grip

  18. on yourself and get your Bible open

  19. because I'm going to read this expecting

  20. you to

  21. grasp the things that we're looking at

  22. so we don't have to go back to them too

  23. much as we have our message today.

  24. But I'm not going to start in Samuel or

  25. Chronicles. I'm going to go to have a

  26. pre-ereading

  27. to Exodus 25. So bear with me,

  28. Exodus 25

  29. and verse 10.

  30. Now, my guess is the average American

  31. doesn't know anything about the Ark of

  32. the Covenant except that they watched a

  33. a movie, Hollywood movie about it on

  34. Indiana Jones and that was okay.

  35. That doesn't really give you the

  36. picture,

  37. but we're going to be dealing with this.

  38. And um first, we need to look in Exodus

  39. where God instructed them to make such a

  40. thing.

  41. The Ark of the Covenant. Exodus

    Exodus 25:10

  42. 25:10.

  43. And they shall make an ark of aacia of

  44. wood. Two cubits and a half shall be the

  45. length thereof, and a cubit and a half

  46. the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a

  47. half the height thereof.

  48. It's interesting uh comparison

  49. that the same Hebrew word for coffin

  50. in Genesis 50

  51. is the word for ark here.

  52. So get your even if you don't know the

  53. cubits

  54. uh and stuff you get an idea somewhat.

  55. It's a it's smaller than a coffin but

  56. the same word is used.

  57. and you'll overlay it with pure gold.

  58. It's made of wood, but the outside is

  59. all gold.

  60. Within and without shall you overlay it.

  61. So the wood's not seen. You just see the

  62. gold lay gold layers over. And shall

  63. make upon it a rim of gold round about

  64. who shall cast four rings of gold for

  65. it. four rings of gold,

  66. and put them in four corners thereof,

  67. and two rings shall be in one side, and

  68. two rings

  69. on the other side of it.

  70. And you'll make staves of acacia wood,

  71. and overlay them with gold.

  72. These staves are the poles that fit

  73. through the rings, so the ark can be

  74. carried.

  75. And thou shalt put the staves into the

  76. rings by the side of the ark, that the

  77. ark may be born with them. The stave

  78. shall be in the rings of the ark. They

  79. shall not be taken out from it, and thou

  80. shalt put into the ark. This becomes

  81. very important. What's inside?

  82. The testimony which I'll give you. Thou

  83. shalt make a mercy seat of pure gold.

  84. That mercy seat is the same word

  85. propitiation in the New Testament. It's

  86. where the blood was applied once a year

  87. by the priest in the Holy of Holies much

  88. later.

  89. Two cubits and a half shall be the

  90. length thereof and a cubit and a half

  91. the breadth thereof. And so you got this

  92. mercy seat kind of like a saddle

  93. gold on top of the ark and you'll make

  94. two cherubim of gold. These are not real

  95. angels but they're golden angels to

  96. represent the angels

  97. of beaten work shall you make them in

  98. two ends of the mercy seat and make one

  99. cherub on one end and the other cherub

  100. on the other end even of the mercy seat.

  101. And shall you make the cherubam on the

  102. two ends thereof. And the cherubam shall

  103. stretch forth their wings on high,

  104. covering the mercy seat with their

  105. wings, and their faces shall look one to

  106. another toward the mercy seat. So the

  107. two golden angels are facing the middle,

  108. and they're facing each other, and the

  109. blood is put in between on the mercy

  110. seat.

  111. And there thou shalt put the mercy seat

  112. above upon the ark. And in the ark shall

  113. you put the testimony that I shall give

  114. thee. And there I'll meet with thee.

  115. This is where God says, I'll meet with

  116. thee and I'll commune with thee from

  117. above the mercy seat. We are talking

  118. about the pre-incarnate Jesus Christ in

  119. a christophony.

  120. God would appear

  121. in a glory cloud

  122. above the mercy seat

  123. from between the two cherubim which are

  124. upon the ark of the testimony of all

  125. things which I give thee in commandment

  126. to the children of Israel. Now that's

  127. part of it. Please slip over to chapter

  128. 30 of Exodus

  129. and verse one.

  130. Thou shalt make an altar to burn incense

  131. upon it. Of quesacia wood shall you make

  132. it. A cubit shall be the length thereof.

  133. A cubit the breadth thereof. Four

  134. squares shall it be, and two cubits

  135. shall be the height thereof. The horns

  136. thereof shall be the same. You overlay

  137. it with pure gold the top thereof, and

  138. the sides thereof round about, and the

  139. horns thereof shall you make on a rim of

  140. gold roundout. Two golden rings shall

  141. you make to it under the rim of it by

  142. the two corners thereof. Upon the two

  143. sides you shall make it and you shall

  144. and they shall be for the staves with

  145. which to bear it. You shall make the

  146. staves of acacia wood. Overlay them with

  147. gold and thou shalt put it before the

  148. veil that's in the ar by the ark of

  149. testimony before the mercy seat that's

  150. over the testimony where I will meet

  151. thee. And Aaron, that's the high priest,

  152. the first high priest, and every high

  153. priest after him, shall burn thereon

  154. sweet incense every morning. When he

  155. dresses the lamps, he'll burn the

  156. incense.

  157. And when Aaron lights the lamps at

  158. evening, he'll burn incense on it,

  159. perpetual incense before the Lord

  160. throughout your generations. You'll

  161. offer no strange incense thereof, nor

  162. burnt sacrifice, nor meal offering.

  163. Therefore shall you pour drink offering

  164. thereon. And Aaron shall make an

  165. atonement on the horns of it once in a

  166. year with blood. Once a year the high

  167. priest and nobody else would go into the

  168. holy place and then go into the holy of

  169. holies once a year, sprinkle blood over

  170. the mercy seat of the ark of the

  171. covenant

  172. and go out.

  173. And so between a holy God above the

  174. mercy seat

  175. and the ten commandments that are inside

  176. the box and Aaron's rod that buds is

  177. inside the box.

  178. Uh and some of the mana that's inside

  179. the box in a jar between a holy God and

  180. those things

  181. is blood.

  182. And Aaron shall make atonement on the

  183. horns of the of it once in a year with

  184. the blood of the sin offering of

  185. atonements. Once in a year shall you

  186. make atonement upon it throughout all

  187. your generations. It's most holy to the

  188. Lord.

  189. Now go with me to Numbers 4. This is the

  190. pre-ereading. We're still in the

  191. pre-ereading.

  192. We're not in the text yet.

  193. Numbers four. This is the longest uh

  194. text reading you'll ever probably get

  195. out of me on a message.

  196. Numbers 4:1

    Numbers 4:1

  197. 15.

  198. This is an important one. But when Aaron

  199. and his sons have finished covering the

  200. sanctuary and all the vessels of the

  201. sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward

  202. after that, the sons, underline this,

  203. the sons of Co

  204. shall come to bear it. These were

  205. priests. Now, all Levites are priests,

  206. but not all priests are Levites. No,

  207. that's that's not true. Uh, all priests

  208. are Levites, but not all Levites are

  209. priests.

  210. The sons of Coath shall come to bear it,

  211. and they shall not touch any holy thing,

  212. lest they die.

  213. Not everybody, not every Levite could

  214. carry this.

  215. Only the co Kathites,

  216. only the priests.

  217. These things are the burden of the sons

  218. of Kohath in the tabernacle of the

  219. congregation. Now God was clear about

  220. the responsibilities and God was clear

  221. about the activities concerning

  222. the ark of the covenant

  223. that they carried it for 40 years

  224. on their shoulders

  225. and they were camping. Some of you like

  226. camping. They camped for 40 years

  227. in the wilderness. 40 years of camping.

  228. And so this was very important.

  229. And the pre-incarnate Lord Jesus Christ

  230. would appear in a glory cloud over the

  231. mercy seat

  232. as a glory cloud manifestation.

  233. This was before he was incarnate.

  234. And between a holy God

  235. and a sinful people that broken God's

  236. law that was in the mercy seat box

  237. with blood

  238. and the New Testament says Christ is the

  239. propitiation

  240. for our sin

  241. and not for ours only but also for the

  242. sins of the whole world.

  243. Now that brings us to 2 Samuel 6

  244. and 1 Chronicles 13.

  245. These are our texts this morning, but I

  246. want to make sure everybody

  247. is on the same page when we read our

  248. texts.

  249. 2 Samuel 6.

  250. The background for this is what

  251. the most horrible thing that any Jew

  252. could think about has happened.

  253. The Philistines had beat the Jews in

  254. battle and captured the ark of God.

  255. When Eli heard it, he fell over

  256. backwards and died.

  257. when his daughter-in-law heard it,

  258. having a baby and one of her husbands

  259. were killed, she she gave birth. She

  260. went into labor and she said she she

  261. used the word Kabad.

  262. She named the baby Kabad. The glories

  263. departed.

  264. It was a horrific thing. And then the

  265. Philistines once they captured the ark

  266. of God, and this was judgment because of

  267. the sins of Eli's sons and everything

  268. else, um

  269. they thought that was a big prize, but

  270. it kept getting judged every time they

  271. had the ark anywhere in any Philistine

  272. city. So they wanted to send it back and

  273. they had enough of this. Nobody wants

  274. it. So they sent it back

  275. on a cart,

  276. a new cart

  277. with golden offerings on it. And that's

  278. how the Jews got it back.

  279. But a new cart

  280. in their minds that was a way to honor

  281. it.

  282. that that was a Philistine expedient,

  283. not a biblical

  284. sanctioned way for the ark.

  285. So,

  286. finally,

  287. David has gotten to the place he says,

  288. "I'm living in a he's going to he's

  289. going to say this in chapter seven. He

  290. he's He's he's got a palace and God

  291. doesn't have any and he's living in a

  292. tent. Well, he wasn't even living in a

  293. tent. The ark was up there in Shiloh and

  294. it he David wanted to bring it to

  295. Jerusalem.

  296. And so this is what's going on.

  297. 2 Samuel 6:12, it was told King David

    2 Samuel 6:12

  298. saying, "The Lord has blessed the house

  299. of Oat Edom and all that pertains to him

  300. because of the ark of God." So the one

  301. person's keeping it, the Philistines got

  302. rid of it and his house was blessed. So

  303. David went and brought up the ark of God

  304. from the house of Obedom into the city

  305. of David with gladness.

  306. And it was that when they who bore the

  307. ark of God had gone six paces, he

  308. sacrificed oxing and fatlings.

  309. This is a big deal. 30,000 people in

  310. this parade.

  311. This was a big deal. And David danced

  312. before the Lord with all his might and

  313. was girded with a linen ephod.

  314. Now, it wasn't exactly dancing in his

  315. underwear, but almost.

  316. So, he's he's taken off the king robes

  317. and he's he is enthused and he is it's

  318. before the Lord and so forth.

  319. So David and all the house of Israel

  320. brought up the ark of the Lord was

  321. shouting with the sound of a trumpet.

  322. And as the ark came into the into the

  323. city of David,

  324. uh my child Saul's daughter looked out

  325. of a window and saw King David leaping

  326. and dancing before the Lord

  327. and she despised him

  328. in her heart.

  329. And they brought in the ark of the Lord

  330. and set it in its place inside the

  331. tabernacle that David had pitched for

  332. it. And David offered burnt offerings

  333. and peace offerings before the Lord. And

  334. as soon as David had finished offering

  335. burnt offerings and peace offerings, he

  336. blessed the people in the name of the

  337. Lord. And he distributed among all the

  338. people, even the whole multitude of

  339. Israel, as well as the women as men. to

  340. everyone a cake of bread and a portion

  341. of cake uh raisins. 30,000 people ate at

  342. that party.

  343. So all the people departed, everyone to

  344. his house.

  345. David returned to bless his household.

  346. My child, the daughter of a Saul,

  347. came out to meet David.

  348. said,

  349. "How glorious

  350. is the king of Israel today?"

  351. Being sarcastic,

  352. who uncovered himself today in the eyes

  353. of the handmmaids of his servants as one

  354. of the worthless fellows shamefully

  355. uncovers himself.

  356. In other words, you're underdressed.

  357. You're a king. You should keep your

  358. robes on. You shouldn't be doing this in

  359. front of her.

  360. And he was not unmod he was not immodest

  361. that she was

  362. being sarcastic.

  363. And David said to my child, "It was

  364. before the Lord

  365. who chose me before your father and

  366. before all his house to appoint me ruler

  367. over the people of the Lord, over

  368. Israel. Therefore, I'll play before the

  369. Lord, and I'll yet be more contemptable

  370. than this, and am willing to be base in

  371. my own sight. And of the maid servants,

  372. whom you have spoken of them shall I

  373. beheld in honor. Therefore,

  374. my child,

  375. daughter of Saul,

  376. had no child

  377. until the day

  378. of birth.

  379. Something

  380. is going on here that's very important.

  381. And her mocking

  382. her husband

  383. is an offense

  384. to God

  385. and she come under severe

  386. correction.

  387. But before her correction,

  388. there was another correction,

  389. a correction of David,

  390. a correction of everyone involved.

  391. And I take you back to ch uh 2 Samuel uh

  392. 6 verse 1.

  393. Again, David gathered together all the

  394. chosen men of Israel, 30,000.

  395. And David arose and went with all the

  396. people who were with him from Baal Judah

  397. to bring up from there the ark of God

  398. whose name is called by the name of the

  399. Lord of hosts who dwells between the

  400. cherubim. And they set the ark of God on

  401. a what?

  402. A new guard.

  403. What did God say?

  404. What were those poles for?

  405. It was to be carried,

  406. not on a new cart,

  407. but by the priests.

  408. But they set the ark of God on the new

  409. cart. That's what the Philistines did.

  410. So that's what they did. So they're

  411. following the Philistines, not God's

  412. word. How many churches are doing that

  413. and think it's okay?

  414. Like a choir being directed by

  415. um instead of directed by

  416. um

  417. godly song leader getting directed by

  418. Mick Jagger.

  419. This doesn't work.

  420. They set the ark of God upon a new cart

  421. and brought it out of the house of

  422. Abenadab which was in Gabea and Oza and

  423. Ohio. I always want to call him Ohio but

  424. it's Ohio.

  425. And Oza and Aayu, the sons of Abinadam

  426. drove the new cart. They're driving it.

  427. They're sitting on it driving it.

  428. and they brought it out of the house of

  429. Abidadab which was in Gaba accompanying

  430. the ark of God and Ao went before the

  431. ark.

  432. So apparently he gets out in front of it

  433. for whatever reason and other is driving

  434. and David and all the house of Israel

  435. played before the Lord and all manner of

  436. instruments made of furwood even the

  437. harps and the psalters and the timbols

  438. and the cornets cornets and the symbols.

  439. And when they came to Nikon's threshing

  440. floor, Oza put forth his hand to the ark

  441. of God and took hold of it for the oxen

  442. shook.

  443. So other oza did what he had the

  444. reaction that and he his hand back and

  445. tried to steady it.

  446. Anger the Lord was kindled against us.

  447. God smote him there for his error and

  448. there he'd done

  449. the ark of God.

  450. David was displeased because the Lord

  451. had broken forth an anger against Oza

  452. and he called the name of the place

  453. Perez Uza to this day.

  454. David was afraid of the Lord that day

  455. and said, "How shall I how shall the ark

  456. of God of the Lord come to me?" So David

  457. would not remove the ark, and the Lord

  458. of the Lord unto him into the city of

  459. David. But David carried it aside to the

  460. house of Oed Edom the Gitite. And the

  461. ark of the Lord continued in the house

  462. of Obed, Edom the Gitite, three months.

  463. And the Lord blessed Oed Edom and all

  464. his household. And then it then we get

  465. back to where we started reading and it

  466. was told King David saying the Lord's

  467. blessed the house of Oadom. And so he

  468. thought well maybe we need to

  469. reconsider.

  470. I'm not going to read Chronicles was

  471. getting a long read but in Chronicles

  472. David said

  473. we as he corrected himself he didn't

  474. seek the Lord in the right way.

  475. Messed up. We forgot what God revealed

  476. about how to carry it. It's 1 Chronicles

  477. 13

  478. and following.

  479. Now, this is our text today.

  480. And this morning, I'm seeking to to uh

  481. prepare us for the table of the Lord.

  482. And I'm what you might say, well, how's

  483. this going to prepare us for the table

  484. of the Lord? this Old Testament story

  485. about judgment, it is about the Lord and

  486. so forth. Uh and this new cart, the

  487. Philistine invention uh after the

  488. capturing the ark and uh all these five

  489. different musical instruments and 30,000

  490. people involved. It was a big deal until

  491. disaster struck.

  492. is supposed to be hand carried

  493. and Oza did the thing you would think

  494. would be normal.

  495. He didn't want it to fall off the

  496. fall off the wagon. Yet God struck him.

  497. Now

  498. it upset David. It upsets people today.

  499. Why' God do that? That seems like a

  500. little thing.

  501. Why God did God overreact?

  502. Well, think about this ark. Think about

  503. what's in it.

  504. The Ten Commandments are inside of

  505. stone. The golden pot of mana is in

  506. there. Aaron's rod that budded is in

  507. there

  508. inside the ark.

  509. And for 40 years that ark was carried

  510. through the wilderness and before that

  511. it crossed the Jordan River. It was

  512. carried around Jericho. It was in the

  513. tent of meeting in Shiloh. And it was

  514. captured by the Philistines. But it was

  515. representing God's presence with his

  516. people. And God would meet with the

  517. people over the mercy seat and between a

  518. holy God and a sinful people who broken

  519. his law.

  520. was the blood.

  521. Now, all of this is stunningly prophetic

  522. of Jesus Christ.

  523. Stunningly prophetic of Jesus Christ.

  524. He's the only one that ever kept ten

  525. commandments. You haven't. I haven't.

  526. He's the only one. He's the one that's

  527. the bread. He's the mana that came down

  528. from heaven. Read John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  529. He's the only one that's risen from the

  530. dead.

  531. And that's what Aaron's rod that budded

  532. proves. It was that contest between the

  533. different leaders of the tribes who the

  534. priest going to be and and the ones

  535. where the dead wood there's between dead

  536. wood and living wood.

  537. The church gave me a a walking stick.

  538. It's like a shepherd's cane few years

  539. ago. I've had that in my living room by

  540. my fireplace ever since you gave it to

  541. me.

  542. It's never budded anything.

  543. Not even once. It's dead wood.

  544. It's dead wood.

  545. That walking stick

  546. that buted was dead wood.

  547. But out of the dead wood came

  548. inside.

  549. Everything in the ark was picturing

  550. ahead of time Jesus Christ.

  551. Even the mercy seat is Jesus Christ.

  552. He's our mercy seat. Read the New

  553. Testament.

  554. And so all these things are fascinating

  555. and wonderful. And you really can't get

  556. the New Testament if you don't know the

  557. Old Testament. The Old Testament is so

  558. prophetic and shadows of good things to

  559. come.

  560. And there were these two attempts to

  561. bring the ark. The first one failed

  562. because of the sin of the nation in

  563. ignoring biblical revelation,

  564. an inexcusable error. The second one

  565. succeeded

  566. when they finally yielded to God's way

  567. of doing God's work.

  568. God wants us to yield to his word in

  569. everything.

  570. Those that worship him must Jesus said

  571. it to the woman at Samaria. God's spirit

  572. and those that worship God must worship

  573. him in spirit and in what? Truth. No

  574. amount of enthusiasm, no amount of

  575. sincerity can make up for ignoring truth

  576. when you worship.

  577. Now, truth isn't the only thing. You got

  578. to worship him in spirit as well as in

  579. truth. It's both. That's John chapter 4.

    John 4 chapter mention

  580. But what was going on here? They were

  581. ignoring the truth part.

  582. And God is correcting not just but

  583. everybody. It upset David to no end. But

  584. finally he tried again because he

  585. realized, "Yep, yeah, we didn't we

  586. didn't seek him the right way. We blew

  587. it."

  588. And when God corrects you and when God

  589. corrects me, we look in the Bible and

  590. find out where we messed up. Confess,

  591. right?

  592. We don't pretend we're no better than we

  593. know better than God.

  594. So all of this is quite important

  595. and God wanted it carried by hand.

  596. I I wish now looking back over 50 years

  597. I wish I'd have kept track of the

  598. funerals I preached.

  599. I really do. I don't I did in the

  600. beginning but I gave up. First Bible

  601. wore out and that somewhere the page

  602. where everything was written is gone. I

  603. kept track of the people I married. when

  604. they're buried and lost all that stuff.

  605. I'm not known for organization,

  606. but it's very important. It's very

  607. important for us uh at funerals to be

  608. reverent.

  609. The privilege of a pastor at a funeral

  610. is to walk before the casket.

  611. And

  612. the casket is carried

  613. by humans.

  614. And normally that's pretty good un

  615. unless you got a four or 500 pound

  616. person.

  617. And I've been I've not just been a

  618. pastor, I've been a pawbearer. Some

  619. pretty heavy people,

  620. but we still hand carried them. And

  621. sometimes as a pastor, I've had to reach

  622. back and help the guys because they've

  623. been old guys like me and the weight was

  624. too heavy. you do what you got to do.

  625. But hand carrying it is the proper

  626. respect

  627. that you seek to to uh to do.

  628. You might slip in the snow. You might

  629. slide. Uh you might get wet in the rain,

  630. but you carry it.

  631. The proper respect for God was

  632. handcarried.

  633. and carried art.

  634. Why do we respect people more than we

  635. respect God?

  636. What's the matter with us in America?

  637. So, what happened here?

  638. Um

  639. Alfred Ethershime said this was not

  640. merely this was not merely a piece of

  641. furniture but the very emblem of God's

  642. presence among his people.

  643. Another said here we have the locust of

  644. the atonement the throne of the

  645. invisible God. Another said the vis it's

  646. the ark was a visible token of God's

  647. presence the symbol of his presence on

  648. earth.

  649. So in the first attempt died

  650. in the second attempt

  651. my child David's wife

  652. sinned

  653. two sins died irreverence

  654. unbiblical

  655. his sincerity didn't make up for his

  656. being unbiblical

  657. and my my child David's wife

  658. sinned

  659. by her attitude towards what was going

  660. on.

  661. Both of these seemed to us to be

  662. minor sins.

  663. Now, you know, if any some of you from

  664. Roman Catholic background, you know,

  665. Catholics divide sins up into venial

  666. sins and uh venial sins and u

  667. what what's our second one?

  668. Yeah,

  669. >> mortal sins.

  670. >> Mortal sins. I couldn't couldn't

  671. couldn't read my writing. I wrote it

  672. down. I couldn't read sins and mortal

  673. sins. Listen, all sins are mortal sins,

  674. little sins,

  675. medium-sized sins,

  676. three/4er sins.

  677. They may be little to us,

  678. but they're big to God. Ask Adam and

  679. Eve.

  680. Now, there's more complexity to that

  681. variation of sins, mortal sins and penal

  682. sins than I'm talking about, but you

  683. know, the Catholics have reasons for

  684. those. Uh, basically the the mortal

  685. sins, you're in big trouble. You know,

  686. venial sins, yeah, you messed up, but

  687. it's not so bad. uh you won't die for

  688. that one

  689. but God won't take your life necessarily

  690. but there's no more minor sins

  691. concerning the major theocratic kingdom

  692. event the central s symbol of God's

  693. presence among his people and and uh

  694. this where the central participant is

  695. God God's covenant for the future

  696. and I know we can talk about all you

  697. exatholic We can talk about the subject

  698. of venial sins and mortal sins later.

  699. I'm being overly simplistic

  700. or something is more involved, but

  701. that's another subject.

  702. I'd like you to notice something

  703. very interesting.

  704. Did you notice that chapter six, this

  705. whole business about the ark coming into

  706. Jerusalem

  707. and chapter 7, the business about the

  708. Davidic covenant and the coming of the

  709. Messiah in David's line

  710. are side by side.

  711. What did I say wrong, Linda?

  712. I'm too soft. Okay. If did you notice

  713. the chapter six our section with the ark

  714. coming into Jerusalem God coming into

  715. the capital city in the parade with

  716. 30,000 people and David saying the

  717. Lord's dwelling in a tent and I'm here

  718. in a palace.

  719. All of a sudden David said bringing the

  720. ark into Jerusalem's not enough. God

  721. needs a temple and then I'm going to

  722. build it for him. Nope. You're not going

  723. to do that either.

  724. Good. Good. It's good that you wanted

  725. to, David, but you're not the guy.

  726. You can plan it. You can collect money

  727. for it. You can collect materials for

  728. it, but your son's going to do it.

  729. But I'll build you.

  730. And that's where

  731. the Davidic covenant promising Jesus

  732. Christ to the line of David come.

  733. And that tells you how my child missed

  734. out

  735. when she was childless.

  736. Remember, David had more than one wife

  737. to the day of her death.

  738. All this is very very interesting. All

  739. this is very very fascinating.

  740. and chapter 6 of 2 Samuel and chapter 7

  741. of 2 Samuel should be studied together.

  742. And in light of this, there are no minor

  743. sins after all.

  744. Now, I know God could kill us for every

  745. sin we do, and he doesn't.

  746. And that's kind of what the Catholics

  747. mean of venial versus mortal. I mean, we

  748. all could die for anything.

  749. But God doesn't normally do that.

  750. But this in this case, David the king

  751. got an A+ in enthusiasm, an A+ in

  752. sincerity, an A+ in good intentions, but

  753. an F in biblical accuracy.

  754. So he didn't mean to be irreverent.

  755. But he was

  756. I've told you this story many times.

  757. Those of you who've been here, when I

  758. was in sixth grade, they chose me

  759. and a girl named Beverly Smart to put up

  760. the flag of the school in the morning.

  761. And so we did it together. And we

  762. normally did it every day.

  763. And one day, unbeknown to us and not on

  764. purpose to us, but just out of kids

  765. thinking about something else and not

  766. being careful enough, we put the flag

  767. up, the American flag up upside down,

  768. and we didn't know it.

  769. Obviously, we got called in

  770. and we were totally ignorant of that. We

  771. didn't do it on purpose. We didn't do it

  772. as a prank.

  773. And we were both mortified

  774. when we found out and we went out and

  775. changed it.

  776. But it was embarrassing because the

  777. American flag has deep meaning,

  778. especially for people who've died for

  779. our country. It shouldn't be something

  780. done carelessly or absent-mindedly.

  781. And

  782. by the mercy of the school, they allowed

  783. us continue to put the flag up after

  784. that

  785. because they realized it was an

  786. accident. But still, I wouldn't have

  787. blamed them if they said, "Thank you for

  788. your service. We're going to get

  789. somebody else."

  790. So,

  791. what a challenge this is concerning bibl

  792. warning of biblical unbiblical

  793. innovations in a church service, doing

  794. church in a worldly way or copying the

  795. ideas of the world rather than the word

  796. of God.

  797. God's work and God's way will have God's

  798. support.

  799. You don't want to end up with a bunch of

  800. wood, hay, and stubble at the end of

  801. your life at the beac of Christ.

  802. And so this is quite important.

  803. Is it biblical

  804. is one of the first questions we should

  805. ask.

  806. But it wasn't asked on that day.

  807. The oxen weren't the only stupid ones

  808. that day. People talk about you being

  809. dumb as an ox. Well, David was dumb as

  810. an ox that day.

  811. Important people are doing it.

  812. Is it biblical?

  813. Spiritual people are doing it. Is it

  814. biblical? Our leaders are doing it. Is

  815. it biblical?

  816. 30,000 people can't be wrong.

  817. Is it biblical?

  818. The Scoffield Bible entitles this doing

  819. the right thing the wrong way.

  820. Now, you can't do the wrong thing the

  821. right way, but you can do the right

  822. thing the wrong way. And that's exactly

  823. what they did.

  824. It was submitting a heathen example for

  825. a divine rule in the worship of God.

  826. Lacking in reverence, lacking in

  827. obedience,

  828. no failure of enthusiasm and spiritual

  829. zeal.

  830. But meaning well and being enthusiastic

  831. is no

  832. no excuse or it's you don't get a pass

  833. for that if you're not being biblical.

  834. God is a spirit and those that worship

  835. him must worship him in spirit and in

  836. truth.

  837. And then when David gets home, his wife

  838. greets him. Everybody had a great time.

  839. The second time they brought it, they

  840. brought it the right way. And she

  841. profaneed that most holy scene with her

  842. scorn.

  843. She loved David, but she didn't love the

  844. Lord.

  845. And David and her had a deep history and

  846. a hard history. And I feel bad for her

  847. here, but this was not her best moment.

  848. David was doing everything he could in

  849. his enthusiasm.

  850. Matthew Henry said, "All our might is

  851. little enough to to uh engage in holy

  852. duties."

  853. How many How many people do you know

  854. that think that you Bible believing

  855. Christians too serious?

  856. You take your religion too

  857. too seriously.

  858. You go to church too much. You read the

  859. Bible too much.

  860. those kind of comments.

  861. They're embarrassed by our zeal.

  862. I think it's an excessive

  863. act of time and so forth. Now, they can

  864. go to a football game and be there all

  865. day and they can travel across the

  866. country to go to a baseball game, but

  867. you Christians, you're too you're too

  868. enthusiastic.

  869. How does this prepare us for the Lord's

  870. supper?

  871. Let's ask that question.

  872. There's a shocking contrast between us a

  873. sin of touching the ark and the New

  874. Testament doctrine of people invited to

  875. touch Jesus.

  876. Here's my hands and my feet.

  877. Thomas,

  878. handle me and see.

  879. Put your finger in my the holes in my

  880. hands and in my side.

  881. The very same holy Jesus that's

  882. untouchable

  883. in the Old Testament because of his

  884. holiness

  885. has become incarnate

  886. and invites after his resurrection and

  887. work of redemption for Thomas

  888. and the others handle me and see a

  889. spirit doesn't have flesh and bones did

  890. you see me have handle me and see Luke

  891. 24 and John 20.

  892. What a shocking contrast.

  893. It shocks me.

  894. Touching the ark, you're dead. Now you

  895. learn that God's holy. That holy God's

  896. going to become a man and die for your

  897. sins and invite you to handle him.

  898. And John puts it in first John, our

  899. hands have handled the word.

  900. And even before our Lord was risen, even

  901. before our Lord was risen, he had

  902. contact with humanity.

  903. He's Emmanuel, God with us.

  904. The virgin will conceive and bear a son,

  905. and his name will be called Emmanuel,

  906. God with us. He was in the womb of a

  907. woman.

  908. And then Simeon took the baby Jesus up

  909. in his arms and blessed him. And John

  910. the Bapti Baptist baptized him. I I

  911. baptized a lot of people, but none I had

  912. to touch every one of them.

  913. and baptize people without touching them

  914. if you do by immersion.

  915. And our Lord laid his laid his holy

  916. hands on lepers, on the blind, on the

  917. sick.

  918. He allowed that sinful woman to kiss his

  919. feet in worship.

  920. He allowed her tears to be wiped off of

  921. his feet. He allowed sinful hands to

  922. smack him in the face,

  923. beat him with whips, nail him to a

  924. cross.

  925. It's shocking to see that in light of

  926. our text.

  927. Nobody dropped dead

  928. when they put Jesus on the cross.

  929. How

  930. how can this difference be explained?

  931. You can't even touch the ark

  932. unless you're a priest. You can priest

  933. only can carry it. Don't dare touch it

  934. or you'll die. How does that contrast

  935. with the New Testament? Handle me and

  936. see.

  937. How's that contrast with the woman if I

  938. can touch his garment?

  939. Let this mind be in you which was in

  940. Christ Jesus.

  941. Who though he was in the form of God,

  942. though he was in the form of God, took

  943. upon him the form of a servant and was

  944. made in the likeness of men.

  945. And being found in the likeness of men,

  946. he humbled himself and became obedient

  947. to death, even the death of the cross.

  948. Therefore, God is highly exalted, super

  949. exalted above every name that is named,

  950. and every knee will bow and every tongue

  951. confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

  952. That's how

  953. it was in the program of God.

  954. It was in the program of God that he who

  955. was with God for all eternity. In John

  956. 1, the word was made flesh and dwelt

  957. among us. And we beheld his glory, the

  958. glory of the only begotten of the

  959. father, full of grace and truth.

  960. Now, when we come to the Lord's table,

  961. let's remember this. This is my body

  962. which is broken for you. This do in

  963. remembrance of me. Do we?

  964. That's what he demands.

  965. Nothing routine, nothing business as

  966. usual. This is holy.

  967. We're remembering the death of our Lord.

  968. We don't believe in transubstantiation,

  969. but we do believe that the bread and the

  970. cup are representative of the body and

  971. blood of the Lord.

  972. I'm sorry I'm going over a little bit.

  973. Old men reminisce. And some of you have

  974. heard this before, but in 1970,

  975. how many years ago was that? 56 years

  976. ago.

  977. Some friends of mine and I got in a 57

  978. Chevy and we drove in a snowstorm

  979. blizzard over to Urbana, Illinois

  980. for a conference of inner varity

  981. Christian fellowship.

  982. There's a Christian meeting there, the

  983. university,

  984. and they had a big big

  985. building there for athletics, kind of

  986. like very much like our convo center.

  987. Thousands of Christians, professing

  988. Christians were in that building.

  989. And we were there. I don't remember if

  990. it was three days, four days, a week. I

  991. had forgotten that part. But it as the

  992. as it was coming to a close, John

  993. stopped. And if you've ever read his

  994. books, he was an Anglican priest and a

  995. conservative believer

  996. uh from Britain.

  997. He said, "We're going to take communion

  998. and we want everybody to be reverent."

  999. This is the Lord's Supper. I'm

  1000. paraphrasing his words. I don't remember

1001. them exactly. He said, "I don't want any

  1002. pictures being taken

  1003. during this service."

1004. That was his clear and strict

  1005. instructions.

1006. No pictures. This is the Lord's supper.

1007. We're not here to take pictures at this

1008. moment. They didn't care about it

1009. before. They didn't care about it later.

1010. In this moment, no pictures.

1011. They passed the bread. Thousands of

  1012. people got

1013. it. They passed the cup.

1014. Thousands of people got the cup.

1015. But while the bread was being passed and

1016. while the cup was being passed, the

  1017. cameras started going off.

  1018. I was mortified.

  1019. clear disobedience,

  1020. blatant disregard

1021. for the person who was uh leading that

1022. service. People wanting to take pictures

1023. so they could remember the moment.

1024. We're not there to remember the moment.

1025. We're there to remember the moment.

1026. And I'd forgotten a lot of things about

  1027. that service.

1028. But I remember as I had held the bread

1029. in my one hand and the cup in the other,

  1030. I was thinking, I don't even know if I

  1031. should partake of that.

1032. I don't want to be part of it.

  1033. And 56 years later, I can't remember if

  1034. I did or I didn't to be honest,

1035. but I remember I was offended and deeply

  1036. shocked, irreverence

1037. that went on. There was a lot of good

1038. things that went on in that conference,

1039. but that was not one of them.

1040. The bread is the body of Christ.

1041. The cup represents the blood of Christ.

  1042. And

1043. if you read Corinthians, some people

1044. died because they didn't they were

1045. irreverent at the Lord's supper.

1046. This is a time for worship. This is a

1047. time for reverence. This is a time for

1048. reflection. This is time of confession

1049. of sin is certainly a time where our

1050. minds are on what we're doing.

1051. May we enter into it with great

  1052. enthusiasm

  1053. like David,

1054. but we enter into it with great

  1055. submission and reverence.

  1056. Um,

1057. may God help us to do it together.

1058. Father, we pray your blessing on our

1059. time as we take the bread and the cup.

  1060. We thank you

1061. for the incarnate God, Jesus Christ.

1062. We thank thee we've been purchased with

  1063. God's blood.

1064. We're thankful that God was manifest in

  1065. the flesh,

1066. born of a woman, born under the law,

1067. that he might redeem those that were

  1068. under the law.

1069. So we take the bread,

1070. remember our Lord's death, and we take

1071. the cup and remember our Lord's death.

1072. Give us the quietness of heart. Put

1073. other things out of our minds. Give us

  1074. the holiness

1075. of joy to be thankful and reverent at

  1076. the same time

  1077. in Jesus name. Amen.

  1078. for your sins.

  1079. Thank you

  1080. for your

  1081. redeemed.

  1082. Our

1083. Lord Jesus said, Take eat. This is my

1084. body which is broken for you. This do in

  1085. remembrance of me.
