Introduction to The Godhead: The Promised Messiah | Steve Benson

God is.

He's three persons yet one God.

And

open your Bibles if you would to the

book of Galatians.

We've looked at God the Father. We've

looked at the Holy Spirit.

Today we're going to look at

at Christ

and the promises in the Old Testament

about him.

So Galatians where we're going to start

off this morning and

be our

verse we'll kind of launch into this

with

you know Jesus is the alpha and the

omega. He's the beginning and the ending

but he's also everything in between.

So, wherever we pick up verses on him,

he's eternal. We've looked at uh his

eternity last week. And that's what the

Bible says. He's he is forever and ever

in both direction.

And that's the way God is. He's eternal.

And he's outside of time. And he's

outside of matter and space and those

those things that hinder us. He made

them.

So here in Galatians chapter 4 and

Galatians 4 · chapter mention

verse4, this sort of sums up,

you know, our thoughts in the New

Testament and and as well trying to go

back into the Old Testament today. We're

not going to try to. We are.

But uh this this was a important verse

for me here. But it says that God sent

forth God his son there in verse four

when the fullness of time was come. So

God decided

uh when this would happen

and he pulled this off and accomplished

these great things with his son. It says

God sent forth his son made of a woman.

That's important. Made under the law.

That's important. To redeem them that

were under the law that we might receive

the adoption

of sons. So there's a lot here in these

two verses that sort of get us going

that God, you know, God sent forth God

and to a woman that was Mary to humanity

to the Jewish nation. He came unto his

own and his own received him not, but as

well to the whole human race he came. So

it's through this woman that these

things happened and made under the law

the Jewish law. So God's timing was

perfect when this happened. And this

became uh what the book of Luke tells

us. Turn to Luke chapter 2.

Luke chapter 2. Luke tells us this is

Luke 2 · chapter mention

this is the good news.

So, you know, when did the good news

begin? Well, the good news began way

back in the Old Testament. We're going

to see that. But here in chapter 2 and

verse 10,

uh here's our Christmas story. In the in

the incarnation, the angel of the Lord

said to them, "Fear not. Behold,

I bring you good tidings of great joy

shall be to all people." So he sums it

up for us here. You know, when God sent

forth God

uh to Mary to the Jewish nation, this

was good news. This was great news. This

is wonderful news. This is the news that

yeah should should cause us to fear not

because

God has become a man. So he goes on down

through here and he as we read this, he

says, "This will be a sign unto you.

you'll find the babe wrapped in

swaddling clothes lying in a manger. So

those were the signs pointing to Jesus

so they wouldn't miss him.

And uh he says in verse 13,

suddenly there was with the angels a

multitude of heavenly hosts praising God

and saying glory to God in the highest.

So this is the glory of God when the son

of God is born. This is the good news

that, you know, God sent forth God into

the world. And uh we're going to look at

the incarnation here in a here in in the

future. But today, we're going to tie

these things to the uh to the Old

Testament. But remember what he said

there in verse 11. This is the glory of

God. These are signs. Uh this is Christ

the Lord. Uh he says there

in verse 11.

Well, we we're familiar with that verse

in Genesis chapter 3 and verse1 15. You

know, that's the very first promise of

the the Lord Jesus Christ is there in

Genesis chapter 3 and verse 15. And God

said there was going to be enmity

between the seed, the woman's seed and

and and his seed. And certainly, you

know, Satan hates hates Christ. The

world hates Christ. That's still there.

That's not going away. we uh you know we

accept that and you know it's good for

us that you know that that the world

hates Christ and hates uh that's the

that's the opposition that comes that's

good for us but uh you know here here

was Mary's seed alone turn over to

Matthew chapter 1

discovered this about this word in

Matthew chapter 1 verse 16

Matthew 1:16

he says here and Jacob

begott Joseph and these were the

genealogies of Jesus the genealogy of

Mary and uh the husband of Mary of whom

was born Jesus and this that word there

means that it's of Mary alone and it's

the the Hebrew word hes it's a feminine

pronoun

there is no male participation here

from Joseph and we're going to look at

the incarnation, but just a taste of it

here. So, here comes the good news that

God had promised way back there in

Genesis and and as Paul said to the

Galatians through Mary uh uh to

Jerusalem

uh or excuse me to Bethlehem and to this

great nation Israel.

And you know this is the first time that

he is called Christ.

You know that's a that's a New Testament

thing.

And uh you know we have the the Hebrew

and the Greek both and in the English

it's the anointed one for us.

But you know this is the first time that

he is he is called Jesus Christ. And

he's called a lot of things a lot of

good names. Um you know he's Emmanuel.

He's God with us. all these here he

is Christ for the first time he's the

anointed one he's the Messiah

and his his human name is Jesus of

Nazareth and he is by the way he's the

prophet

the priest and the king all

three put together so uh you know

typically the

they were anointed with oil in the old

testament remember and Jesus is going to

be anointed with the Holy Spirit. Um

look if you will in chapter 3, Matthew

and in verse 16 and 17 and Jesus when he

was baptized went straight way out of

the water and lo, the heavens were

opened and unto him he saw a spirit of

God descending like a dove and landing

on him. And lo, a voice from heaven

said, "This is my beloved son whom I am

well pleased." So, it starts right out

of the gate. And he, you know, he has

the Holy Spirit. He's not anointed with

oil like the Old Testament s uh kings

were and and priests were and prophets

were. Um he's anointed with the Holy

Spirit. And then we see from God the

Father and the Holy Spirit, the whole

Trinity in this, you know, two verses

here pointing to Jesus who is the good

news, the one that Mary is bringing

forth

um to the great nation of Israel. Now

turn back to Genesis chapter 3

Genesis 3 · chapter mention

to this verse where this promise began

in chapter 3 and verse 15.

And you know when when God's you know

God's God promises and commandments when

God speaks we need to listen and hear

what he says. And here here here it is.

God is making a a promise here

um for the human race and for Adam and

Eve and for for Mary and for Israel and

for for all these great things that

we're seeing in the New Testament. And

then in chapter 3:15,

God says, "I will put enmity between

thee and the woman, between thy seed and

her seed. He shall bruise thy head, and

thou shalt bruise his heel." And that

immnity is still there. The devil is the

enemy of God.

Um, he's the enemy of the human race.

He's the enemy of the church.

So, we should uh listen to what God says

here and and take God up on the promise

that God is going to send a deliverer.

And that's what he says here in verse

16. Unto the woman, I will greatly

multiply thy sorrow

in thy conception. And then uh bringing

forth children, your desire will be on

your husband, and he will rule over

these. So, here's the promise of that

good news that we saw up there with Mary

in the New Testament. Turn to Genesis

Genesis 9 · chapter mention

chapter 9.

This continues with the promise that God

made back there in Genesis 3 and:e 16.

It it goes on now all the way into the

into the New Testament. And we're going

to pick up on some of these this morning

and look at them. In Genesis chapter

nine,

you all remember Noah,

you know, so and you know, God's

promises existed before,

we can see here before the nation of

Israel. We see God's promise existed,

you know, way back in the Garden of Eden

that we just looked at back there. So,

God promised the blessing

uh to Adam and Eve that he was something

that he was going to do. God said, "I

will do this."

And now here in Genesis chapter 9,

then verse 26,

and he said, "Blessed be the Lord God of

Shem, and Canaan shall be his servant."

So here the promise of the Messiah, the

promise of the savior, the promise of

the redeemer now is coming through uh

God's promiser to to Shem of uh Noah's

son.

And uh

the Lord is going to do this. And that's

what he says. Blessed be the Lord God of

Shem. The Lord God's going to do this.

He's going to send forth a plan of

redemption. and he's going to send

forth, you know, revelation through

uh Shem's

um seed and Shem's family. This is

before the promise to Abraham. So, it

goes all the way back to Cain and Abel,

goes all the way back to to Adam and Eve

and in Genesis chapter 3 that we saw

just moments ago. Now, turn over to

chapter 12.

Now, here's where

God's promises to Abraham,

we know this.

Um, and here he says, "I will make of

thee a great nation.

Before it was the human race now, and

now it's a nation.

And I will bless thee, and I will make

thy name great, and thou will be a

blessing." And so this is this is God

promising prosperity

upon Abraham here. And God said, "I'm

going to favor you

for these reasons that all the earth,

all the families of the earth uh may be

blessed so the prosperity of Abraham we

see here and the promise from God." and

and what that's what Matthew says in

Matthew the very first verse in the New

Testament it says the genealogy of Jesus

the son of David and the son of Abraham.

So this Christ that was born to Mary was

of the seed of Abraham and he was of the

seed of uh David.

That was very distinct for the Jews. you

know, you know, he's there's a king

coming, right? So, we have those verses

and then and and don't turn there, but

in Genesis, I'm sorry, Galatians chapter

and verse 16 there, Paul says, "Now to

Abraham and his seeds were the promises

made."

And this is what he's talking about. And

uh he has not said to his seed that are

many but to thy seed that is one

which is Christ.

So God narrowed it down to a one. And

the one is Christ. Not not all the Jews

uh not just any Jew, but it's Christ

uh that he spoke of there. Now turn to

Genesis chapter 17.

and in verse 19.

So this is what we have through the book

of Genesis in the Old Testament. We have

God saying, "Here's what I'm going to

do. Here's how I'm going to do it." And

he promised to Abraham and he promised

to Noah and he promised to Shem and he

promised to Adam and Eve. you know,

these promises of God are coming forth

um from God. And we see here that uh in

verse 19, and God said to Sarah, "Thy

wife shall bear thee a son indeed.

You'll call his name Isaac, and I will

establish my covenant with him for an

everlasting covenant, and with the seed

after him."

So God's very distinct here

on what he wants to do. He's not

interested in a uh Abraham's plan. He's

interested in his plan. And God says,

"I'm going to do this. I'm going to

establish my covenant through Isaac."

So we see uh that coming forth here in

Genesis.

Now turn to chapter 25.

and in verse 23.

Genesis 25:23.

Genesis 25:23

And the Lord said to her, "Two nations

are in your womb, and two manner of

people shall be born to thee. one people

shall be stronger than the other people

and the elder shall serve the younger.

So here we see the the lineage of the

Messiah coming, the promise of the

Messiah coming through uh Jacob here uh

in Genesis.

Turn to chapter 28.

Genesis 28

and verse 13.

You know, that's that's how the nation

of Israel knew, you know, God was their

God. He I'm going to I'm going to do

this. I'm going to fulfill these

promises.

And and God just keeps bringing it forth

and and uh and narrowing it down as to

what is going to be. And here in chapter

28 verse 13,

and behold the Lord stood above it and

said, I am the Lord God of Abraham your

father, the God of Isaac, and the land

whereupon you lie uh you livest liest

to thee will I give it and to thy seed.

So here we have God giving these

promises again uh to to to Jacob. So,

we've seen, you know, from from Adam and

Eve to Noah

to Abraham,

um, to Isaac to Jacob.

And now we see God promising

into the line of Judah. So, turn to

Genesis chapter 49.

Chapter 49.

We even have the tribe

in Genesis 49 and verse 10

says, "The scepter shall not depart from

Judah, nor the lawgiver from between his

feet until Shiloh shall come and unto

him shall be the gathering of the

people." So the king in the kingdom is

going to come uh from the tribe

of Judah

as God promises here to his people.

So you know who would have figured that?

You know somebody might have thought

through the Levites or through you know

another tribe. But God says, "No, I'm

going to bring him I'm going to bring

him through the tribe

of Judah."

Turn over to Psalm 72.

Um,

and so many of the Psalms were written

because, you know, these men looked and

women looked and said, you know, God's

keeping his promise.

And here in Psalm 72

and you know the the the promise is

going to be you know the promise of

peace.

You know that's who this ruler is going

to be. He's going to be he's going to be

a man of peace.

uh he's going to have a kingdom of

peace.

Uh and here in Psalm 72

and in verse 7, in the days in his days

shall the righteous flourish and

abundance of peace as long as the moon

endures. So that's what's going to

happen when the Messiah comes. He's

going to establish his kingdom and his

kingdom is going to be a kingdom of

peace. Turn over to Psalm 14 122.

Psalm

122

and verse 7.

Some of the the psalms are totally about

the Messiah's reign

and and his kingdom. And here we have

Psalm 122:7 says, "Peace be within thy w

Psalms 122:7

walls and prosperity within thy

palaces." So remember what God told

Abraham. You will prosper.

You know, your your nation will prosper.

You uh you're going to be a blessing to

every nation on the earth um through

these and through this. And now we see

he's going to come through Judah. He's

going to uh be a peacemaker. He's going

to have a kingdom of peace. You know, we

have these things here. And Zachchariah

says that we're going to says that about

the Messiah. He's going to have a a

kingdom of peace.

So, the Old Testament is establishing

that as well with these verses.

Now, turn to 2 Samuel.

Here we pick up

in 2 Samuel chapter 7.

The Messiah is going to come through

David.

you know, so you know, that's why he

wasn't

high priest on the earth and come of the

tribe of Aaron. He's our high priest

now, isn't he? After his work was

accomplished. But here we pick up um

the the king part of the prophecy.

Chapter 7 and verse 12, he says, "And

when that thy days be fulfilled, and

thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I

will set up thy seed after thee, which

shall proceed from out of thy own body,

and I will establish his kingdom." So

here we see the Messiah is going to be a

king. Uh he's going to come in the line

of David. He's going to come in the

tribe of Judah. You know, God is giving

us a lot of things about the Messiah and

and Psalm 89 is about his whole reign.

Turn over there. Psalm 89.

That's what this whole psalm is about.

A very long psalm

written by David. And you know, there

are things that David said that, you

know, were true about him, but are going

to be even truer about the Messiah and

his king and kingship and kingdom.

And you know, God is going to set on a

throne

and he's going to rule and reign.

And that's what Psalm 89 is all about

here. I will sing of the mercies of the

Lord forever.

and with my mouth will I make known thy

faithfulness to all generations. And

this this whole psalm is about, you

know, this this kingdom reign of Jesus

and the fact that God carried these

things out and I have mercy. He says in

verse two, "It shall be built up uh

forever. Your faithfulness shall you

establish in the very heavens.

I have made a covenant with my chosen.

and I have sworn unto my David my

servant. So, you know, God is telling

the nation of Israel that's I'm going to

keep my promises. You know, as difficult

as it may be and as unbelievable as it

may be, God is going to do uh these

great things um through this nation,

he's going to bring forth uh his son.

And

uh verse 20 over there he says I have

found David my servant with my holy oil

and I have anointed him. So in a greater

way God anointed his son as he left

heaven uh to come down here and to uh to

accomplish

these great things.

And then Paul says in Romans chapter 3

Romans 3 · chapter mention

remember that verse don't turn there.

Chapter 1 verse three there Paul talks

about the throne. He talks about Jesus

Christ being now glorified and he's on a

throne. Uh he's seated at the right hand

of the father. So these great things

have been accomplished by God. Um turn

back to Isaiah

Isaiah 7 · chapter mention

chapter 7.

We're going to pick up some more details

about the Messiah.

We have verses about his birth.

And uh here in Isaiah chapter 7, you

guys are familiar with these.

In verse 14, remember Mary.

Therefore the Lord himself shall give

you a sign and behold a virgin shall

conceive,

bear a son, and you will call his name

Emanuel, which is being interpreted God

with us. So, you know, here we have in

Isaiah years before

uh it happened the promise of this great

Messiah that God is going to send. And

turn over to chapter nine. You're

familiar with these as well.

Uh Isaiah 9:6, he says, "Unto us child

Isaiah 9:6

is born, a son is given." So God is

doing this through his uh uh you know

through his work and through his effort.

He's bringing these things forth and the

government will be upon his shoulder.

His name will be wonderful counselor,

the mighty God, the everlasting father,

the prince of peace. There's that peace

part and uh Jesus is the prince of peace

and the increase of his government of

peace. There will be no end. And there's

David again,

his throne and his kingdom to order it

and establish it with justice and

righteousness from henceforth forever

more the zeal of the Lord will perform

this. Can you imagine being in a kingdom

with a God like this?

What he's going to do and uh how it's

going to be,

you know, and and you know, it's here.

It's here for Israel. It's here for us

um to see these great things. So Isaiah

even tells us how he's going to come

forth, how he's going to be born.

Micah gives us the place. Turn over to

Micah

We looked at this verse last week, but

we can't ignore it this week. We even

have the place

that he's going to be born.

And you know, our ways aren't God's

ways. You know, I I was running things

and it would be a mess if I was, but I

don't think I would send my son to

Bethlehem,

you know, to to this little town, the

little place, this to this little woman.

And that's what verse two says. Oh

Bethlehem,

Epapra,

though you be the the littlest among the

thousands of Judah. It was unheard of.

Bethlehem barely had a name.

Yet out of thee shall come forth unto me

that is to be ruler.

Remember that scepter that was spoken of

back there with Jacob,

whose going forth have been from old,

from everlasting. And remember that word

everlasting. It just goes in both

directions. He's eternal. this one who

was going to be born um in Bethlehem.

And then we have the commentary in in

Matthew that about this very thing. This

boom, Matthew just says, "Yep, he was

born just like Micah said." And we have

that commentary and that that's what

upset Herod.

Herod got pretty upset because he

thought somebody was coming

to take his place.

Well, guess what? God even gave the

Messiah a forerunner.

Uh remember in Malachi, turn over there,

chapter 3, you're close by.

Malachi

in chapter 3,

we here's the prophecy about John the

Baptist. And behold, I will send my

messenger

and he will prepare the way before

me. God speaking.

Who's the me that? Well, that's Jesus.

He's the Lord.

And shall suddenly come to his temple,

even the messengers of the covenant whom

he will delight. And behold, he shall

come, saeth the Lord of hosts. So God

um not only sent the Messiah, not only

told us how he was going to be born,

where he was going to be born, but God

sent a forerunner to point everyone to

him and say, "Behold the lamb of God

that taketh away the sin of the world."

Guess what? The Bible in the Old

Testament even tells us about his

ministry.

Turn to Isaiah 61.

What kind of ministry is he going to

have? What's he going to do?

Everybody gets hung up on the miracles.

And indeed, we we needed those to prove

that

he was and is the son of God.

That was a part of his ministry. But

that wasn't all that he did.

He had a mission. He had a ministry. He

had a message.

And Isaiah tells us in verse one of

chapter 61, the spirit of the Lord God

is upon me because the Lord has anointed

me

to preach the good tidings. Remember

what

what it said what the angels told Mary

and those were when Jesus was born. This

this is the good news.

Well, here it is in in Isaiah 61. And

the good news is coming to the

brokenhearted, to the b to those who are

bound, to those who are enslaved.

And we're going to pro proclaim liberty

to the captives and open the prisons to

those who are bound to proclaim the

acceptable day of the Lord and the

vengeance of the Lord to comfort all

that mourn.

So this is what kind of ministry

he is going to have.

And now turn back to chapter nine of

Isaiah.

You get more details about his ministry

here in in in uh Isaiah chapter 9.

So we wouldn't have picked Bethlehem. We

wouldn't have picked Judah. we wouldn't

have picked, you know, all these things

that God picked

and and we would not have

we would have not have sent God to

the poor. We would have sent him to the

rich and famous.

The devil tried to make him rich and

famous. He turned it down.

He already had all the fame he needed.

and he turned it all down for us to

reach out to the those who are

the poor and the afflicted like we saw

in 61. But here in Isaiah 9, it says,

"Nevertheless, the dimness shall not be

such as it was in her vexation when the

first he lightly afflicted the land of

Zebulun, the sand of Napali, and

afterwards he did more grievously

afflict her by the ways of the sea and

beyond the Jordan to the Galilee of to

the nations." And so here it is

specifically saying he's going to go to

Galilee

and the people are going to walk in

darkness have seen a great light and

they that dwell in the land of the

shadow of death and this light will

shine upon them. So here is not only his

ministry but who it's going to be to

what it's going to be about. And verse

three adds some more comments as well

all the way down verse five. So he came

to the poor, he came to the rejected, he

came to those who were diseased and

those those who had no friends, those

who uh you know were were all the down

anders.

And guess what? We even have his

ministry of being three and a half years

long. Turn to Isaiah 53.

Isaiah 53. You ever wonder why his

ministry was only three and a half years

long? Well, because the Bible says

that's how long it's going to be.

And here in 53 and verse4,

uh, surely he has borne our grief. He's

carried our sorrows. We did esteem him

stricken,

smitten of men. So, you know, he didn't

isolate himself from these people.

uh he was there uh and and that's how he

bore a grief. That's how he carried away

our sorrows. Only this man, this Messiah

could do this.

And you know, he just he he just made

his abode with them.

He didn't uh try to get away from them.

He didn't quarantine himself. He didn't,

you know, go live on an island

somewhere.

He come to his own

and his own received him not. That's us.

We need a savior. We need a redeemer.

And he he invited everyone to himself.

Matthew 11. Come unto me all ye that

labor and are heavy laden and I will

give you rest. This great one who has

borne our grief. this great one who has

carried away our sorrows.

He was wounded for our transgression.

He was bruised for our iniquities.

The chastisement for our peace was upon

him.

With his stripes, we were healed.

How well did we do? Well, we're like

sheep gone astray. Verse six, we have

turned everyone to his own way.

And the Lord laid on him the iniquity of

us all. Here we even see the rejection

of his own. You know was enough for his

his old familiar friend Judas to betray

him.

But the others turned and as well and

denied him including Peter.

So what was John the Baptist question?

Is this really him?

And Jesus said, "Yeah, it's really me.

I'm fulfilling scripture,

verse after verse after verse."

So, um, you know, Jesus, you know, he

was kind. Turn to Matthew chapter 12.

Just like Isaiah says,

What's the song?

No one ever treated me like Jesus.

And here in Matthew 12,

Matthew 12:19

verse 19,

uh, he shall not strive nor cry, nor

shall any man hear his voice in the

streets. A bruised reed shall he not

break, a smoking flack shall he not

quench till he has sent forth justice to

victory. And in the in his name shall

the Gentiles trust.

So he,

you know, he he lived what he preached

and and he loved them. Uh everyone, not

just some. He loved everyone. He was

calm. He was kind. He was compassionate.

He was loving. You know, unlike the

Pharisees, you know, they were

they were quite a crew, huh? Along with

the the Sadducees, the Jews, those who

crucified Jesus, you know, he was nice

to them, but they weren't nice to him,

you know. And and in those things, he

bore our grief.

and his public ministry and his private

ministry, his teaching and his

preaching. Turn to Psalm 78.

The Old Testament echoes over and over

and over what he's going to do.

And here in Psalm 78

in verse one, give ear, oh my people, to

my law. Incline your ears to my mouth. I

will open my mouth in parables

and I will utter dark sayings of old.

Remember that's what they said. Why are

you speaking in parables?

But he said, well, for some of you it's

to know God and for those who don't know

God, they're not going to, you know,

they're not going to get past God and

and the understanding of God.

So that's what the parables

were about. They were for his his

disciples. They were for his real, you

know, uh real disciples, not the uh

imposttors.

And uh turn to Zechariah chapter 9.

I think I'm going to set a record for

verses in this message,

chapter 9

and verse 9.

Zechariah 9:9

is coming to you is just having

salvation.

So we even have that part of his

ministry here

in the Old Testament. and he's

delivering us through this. You know,

this is what's going on. This isn't a a

parade. This isn't a a pageantry.

This is the open public ministry of

Jesus.

And he's going to pay for our sins. Uh

that's what he's he's going to do.

That's why we see these things.

Now, turn to Psalm 18. Now, we have his

rejection.

The Old Testament tells us he will be

rejected.

And uh go to Psalm 118.

We got a few on this, but we'll just

stick to one. Here's his rejection in

Psalm 118:22.

Psalms 118:22

He is the stone

and the Jews are the builders. They

refuse to become the head of the uh of

the corner. So God sent forth God and

the nation of Israel and the Roman uh we

helped them through the Roman

government. They have crucified

our Messiah, rejected

our Messiah but some that's okay.

Read verse 23. This is the Lord's doing

that is marvelous in our eyes. God is

simultaneously

providing a salvation for us.

I I'm sorry. Isaiah 29

Isaiah 29:13

verse 13.

Isaiah

29

and verse 13.

Wherefore the Lord said, "For as much as

this people, they draw near to me with

their mouth, with their lips, they do

honor me,

but they have removed their heart from

me, and their fear is toward me as

taught by the precept of men." So, the

Bible even tells us that they're going

to outwardly everybody's going to say,

"Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah." But

inwardly,

uh, he's rejected.

Um, just like

the uh New Testament tells us,

we even have Zechariah. Don't turn

there. Yeah, let's do Zechariah 13,

Zechariah 13, because we've got two in

this in this book.

What happened when they in the garden of

Gethsemane when they captured Jesus?

Well, if you don't know, the sheep

scattered.

you know, his sheep were Peter and John

and Paul or excuse me, Paul wasn't a

part of it yet, but all his disciples,

the the the the 12 men there

that he chose

scattered

and he went to the cross alone.

And Zechariah tells us this is going to

happen. Zechariah chapter 13

Zechariah 13 · chapter mention

and verse 7

he says here a wake sword against my

shepherd and against the man who is my

fellow sayaeth the Lord of hosts.

So of all the things that the Messiah

has been called here he's called

shepherd

and that's what he has become.

That's what he is.

What what did he do for the sheep? He

died for the sheep. And after he rose

again, he went looking for the sheep.

He reassembled the sheep. He got the

sheep back together.

And that makes him the great shepherd.

And the shepherd was smitten here. And

the sheep were scattered. And I will

turn my hand upon the little ones. Here

in Zechariah

Zechariah 13:7

13:7.

Well, guess what? We even have the uh 30

pieces of silver.

Zechariah 11.

Zechariah 11

and verse 12.

And I said unto them, if you think good,

give me my price, and if not, for bear.

For they weighed for my price 30 pieces

of silver.

Judah sold Judas sold Jesus for 30

pieces of silver to the high priest.

And the Lord said,

"Cast it unto the potter and a lordy

piece that I will prize of them." He

took the 30 pieces of silver and he cast

them to the potter's house of the Lord.

So, we even have the 30 pieces of silver

that the Messiah is going to be betrayed

for.

And now we have his painful death.

Turn if you would to Psalm 22.

Psalm 22.

In verse one,

John 22 verse one. My God, my God, why

have you forsaken me? Here's his painful

death.

You know, so far from helping me and

from the words of my my roaring, my God,

um I cry at you in the daytime, you

don't hear me. the night season

am I not silent,

but you are holy, you that inhabits the

praise of of Israel.

Here we see the painful death that the

Messiah is going to to die. It's it's

here in this psalm.

Um who wrote this? David. David wrote

this before crucifixion

was invented.

And you can see clearly

in verse 7, if you will.

Oh, they who see me will laugh me to

scorn. They shoot out the lip. They

shake their head. This will literally

happen.

It literally happened.

But verse eight,

he trusted in the Lord. He would deliver

him. Let him deliver him, seeing that he

delights in him. He even tells us what

they're going to say.

And then this is what Jesus is crying

from the cross. Look at verse one. My

God and my God. We just read it. He's

crying this from the cross. And uh if we

could turn over to John 20 25, we'd find

these exact things.

Um no broken bones. Look at verse 17. I

may count all of my bones. They look and

they stare upon me. Not one of Jesus'

bones were broken.

>> Verse 18,

we have the soldiers gambling for his

garment. They parted my garments. Among

them they cast lots unto my vesture.

Soldiers were gambling for Jesus

clothing.

And we have him praying to the father.

Remember that. Now verse 24 tells us,

"For he has not despised nor abhored the

afflicted of the afflicted, neither has

he hidden his face from him, but when he

cried unto him, he heard." So we have

Jesus interceding on our behalf while

we're crucifying him. Um so here we have

his painful death. um uh Isaiah's 52 and

53. We read those where he um was marred

for us. Now turn to Psalm 16

and I'll quit.

We also have his glorious resurrection.

And here in Psalm 16,

you know, this is the verse in Acts. If

we had time to go to Acts, we'd see

there where where Peter says, you know,

don't you guys remember Psalm 16? Don't

you remember this verse? And it wasn't

written about David. David's already

dead and in the ground. It was written

about the Messiah.

So, the Old Testament tells us as well

that his resurrection

is going to take place. Verse 9 of Psalm

16. Therefore, my heart is glad, my

glory rest, my flesh also rests in hope.

Now again, this is David wrote this, but

he didn't know the Savior was going to

come out of the ground at this point,

but David has hope. And but we have a

greater hope in Christ. For thou will

not leave my soul

in shield, neither will thou permit thy

holy one. Jesus is the holy one. We've

we've crucified the holy one.

And you will show me the path of life.

In your presence is the fullness of joy.

At your right hand are pleasures forever

more. Aren't you glad God didn't treat

us like we treated him? It's grace. It's

mercy. It's love that he has upon us.

Next week we'll we'll keep uh looking at

our wonderful blessed Messiah, redeemer,

savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. And what

did they say in the New Testament? He's

all in all. He's done it all. Now, let

us worship him. Father, we thank you

this morning for these precious verses

in the Old Testament and the New

Testament. Thank you for reminding us of

of the promises that you made and you've

kept and you're a great God and you can

do it. We thank you for this precious

gift of eternal life you've given to us

through your son. And uh we thank you

for your grace and your mercy. Thank you

you didn't treat us like we treated you.

We we just know you turned all that up

on your son that we might live.

and uh he accomplished a great thing for

us and we thank you for it in his name.
