  1. topical studies at the same time. One is

  2. on the resurrection of Jesus Christ and

  3. we are back to that one. Uh and the

  4. other is on great texts of the Bible. So

  5. we're back into the resurrection of

  6. Jesus Christ this morning.

  7. All your attention to that subject,

  8. please turn with me to Luke 20. Well,

  9. Luke 24 will be the first scripture that

  10. we're looking at. So, you may turn there

  11. if you would.

  12. Title of my message this morning is a

  13. question.

  14. When did the good news become old news?

  15. That's question.

  16. How did that how'd that happen? When did

  17. the good news become old news?

  18. Well, the good news is not old news for

  19. many people because they've never heard

  20. it.

  21. But the good news becomes old news once

  22. we've heard it and obeyed it.

  23. And in every city, in every school,

  24. every family, every church, there have

  25. been people where the good news was new

  26. news. They'd never heard it before.

  27. They might have been in a church that

  28. didn't teach the Bible very well or

  29. hardly at all. And they say things like,

  30. "I never heard that before."

  31. And so

  32. there are people who've never heard the

  33. gospel, even if they're so-called

  34. churched people.

  35. Clearly preached

  36. or they've never listened if it was.

  37. That's another category. They've been

  38. showing up, but their minds somewhere

  39. else.

  40. And uh it's very easy for that to

  41. happen. It's a very bad habit to get

  42. into, especially if you're raised in

  43. church as a little kid. Preacher stands

  44. up and your mind goes into uh all kinds

  45. of other directions. You're sitting

  46. there very reverently, but your mind's

  47. somewhere else. May God give us grace to

  48. listen to the word of God. And so there

  49. are people who've heard and heard and

  50. heard, but have not heard.

  51. and

  52. uh but so sooner or later the message of

  53. Jesus Christ death, burial, and

  54. resurrection

  55. uh is heard. But once you hear the good

  56. news, it becomes old news because you

  57. already know it. You understand what I'm

  58. saying? It's like never like I never

  59. heard it. It's not new news now. It's

  60. old news. And I don't mean that in a bad

  61. way.

  62. And for some people I I heard five years

  63. ago. I heard 10 years, 30 years, 50

  64. years ago. Once I was blind, but now I

  65. see the light of the world is Jesus. And

  66. I know it now.

  67. And remember Jesus said, "This is the

  68. work of God. What must we do that we

  69. might work the work of God? This is the

  70. work of God that you believe on me whom

  71. he sent."

  72. And it's a wonderful thing when someone

  73. grasps that distillation of our

  74. responsibilities.

  75. and uh as the Lord did in John chapter

    John 6 chapter mention

  76. 6.

  77. And part of proclaiming and sharing the

  78. gospel is believing the gospel ourself.

  79. Romans says it's from faith to faith.

  80. You don't have faith. Pretty hard to

  81. give the gospel in such a way someone

  82. else can get faith. is from faith to

  83. faith and having clarity about the

  84. gospel and having confidence about the

  85. gospel and having courage about the

  86. gospel to share the gospel in a clear

  87. way

  88. is very very important.

  89. Paul said, "I'm not ashamed

  90. of the gospel of Christ."

  91. For it's the power of God to salvation

  92. to everyone

  93. that believes, to the Jew first and also

  94. to the Greek.

  95. Now, you remember if we go to Luke 24,

  96. it's Easter evening.

  97. Our Lord's appeared Easter morning to

  98. the women.

  99. He's appeared Easter afternoon to

  100. Cleopus and wife.

  101. And Cleopus and wife are seven miles

  102. away. And they they zoom back to

  103. Jerusalem thinking they've got good news

  104. and new news

  105. because when they left, everybody had

  106. questions and nobody had answers.

  107. And so they burst through the door

  108. thinking they're going to tell people

  109. something that is amazing.

  110. And the answer to on the other side is

  111. the Lord's risen again. He's appeared to

  112. Peter. We didn't believe the women, but

  113. we believe Peter. He's risen.

  114. Remember that. It's true. The Lord's

  115. risen again. Has appeared to Simon.

  116. And in that moment

  117. for the apostles

  118. as a whole,

  119. the good news became old news.

  120. Wasn't very old. They just heard it.

  121. But it was a wonderful surprise and a

  122. glorious thing.

  123. And of course there were many

  124. appearances of our Lord after that. And

  125. uh you know on Easter evening our Lord

  126. if you could look in Luke 24

  127. um

  128. that's after Cleopus and wife had

  129. returned and as they spoke Jesus himself

  130. stood in the midst of them and said

  131. peace be to you. He didn't knock

  132. didn't knock on the door. Door was

  133. locked. He came in through the walls and

  134. appeared.

  135. They're terrified and frightened.

  136. Supposed that they'd seen a spirit. And

  137. he said, "Why trouble ye?" Luke 24:38.

    Luke 24:38

  138. Why are you troubled? And why do

  139. thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold my

  140. hands and my feet. It's my It's I

  141. myself.

  142. It's me. How many people do you know

  143. walking around with holes in their hands

  144. >> and feet?

  145. These are the identifying marks and

  146. characteristics.

  147. Handle me and see and see for a spirit

  148. hath not flesh and bones as you see me

  149. have. So he invites them to touch him.

  150. He invites him to them to handle him. I

  151. want you guys I want you all of you in

  152. this room touch me. Handle me and see.

  153. When he thus spoken, he showed them his

  154. hands and feet. And while they believed

  155. not for joy and wondered, he said, "Do

  156. you have anything here to eat?"

  157. Now, was he hungry? Well, I would think

  158. he would be after 3 days, but that's

  159. really not the point. He's got a

  160. resurrection body. He doesn't have to

  161. eat. He's eating to show them he's not

  162. an apparition.

  163. And they gave him a piece of broiled

  164. fish and a honeycomb.

  165. and he took it and did eat before them.

  166. Some of you were here years ago. We used

  167. to have sunrise services. One Easter we

  168. had a sunset service and we ate fish and

  169. honeycomb. We did just did it backwards

  170. that year.

  171. And that's what was going on here.

  172. So these are many infallible proofs

  173. of the reality of the resurrection.

  174. And at that moment they knew

  175. he is risen

  176. and the gospel is the good news about

  177. Jesus Christ. He has worked for us.

  178. He is risen

  179. and uh that's a fascinating thing.

  180. Now

  181. as we think about this particular

  182. subject we know there's a lot of

  183. opposition to it. There's a lot of

  184. skepticism to it. There might be some

  185. here even today you you've heard the

  186. gospel but you think I don't know about

  187. that. That was nobody really knows what

  188. happened. I'm I'm you feel you're safe

  189. in your unbelief.

  190. You feel secure in it because nobody

  191. really knows.

  192. Well, the whole gospel of Luke was that

  193. a man might come to the certainty of the

  194. thing.

  195. It's not good to float around in

  196. uncertainty and think that's good.

  197. That's a safe position. It's not a safe

  198. pos. It's not even a valid position. But

  199. many of us have been there in that

  200. position. And at the time we thought,

  201. "Oh, this was this is a legitimate uh

  202. position for me to be in because I don't

  203. know and others don't know and I'm just

  204. going to stick with this. I'm not going

  205. to stick my neck out. I don't want to

  206. buy into something that's not true.

  207. and they use those kind of excuses for

  208. their unbelief.

  209. Well, let me challenge that for the

  210. people that here and the people might

  211. join online.

  212. Let's do some chronology. Let's do some

  213. uh

  214. let's do some investigation

  215. as to the New Testament, as to the

  216. appearances of Jesus, and as to the

  217. records that we have about that today.

  218. How valid are they? How legitimate are

  219. they?

  220. And that's kind of important.

  221. So, turn with me to First Thessalonians.

  222. There's there's three very early

  223. witnesses

  224. on the resurrection

  225. in the New Testament. And you've heard

  226. me say this so many, many, many times.

  227. The gospels were not written before the

  228. epistles

  229. chronologically.

  230. So the four gospels are not the earliest

  231. witnesses to the resurrection that were

  232. written down. Actually, some of the

  233. epistles were written before the

  234. gospels.

  235. Now, obviously, the gospels are

  236. recording things that happened before

  237. the events of the epistles, but the

  238. written records that we have in the New

  239. Testament,

  240. the gospels were written after many of

  241. the epistles.

  242. Now, this is not a matter of serious

  243. debate even between knowledgeable

  244. believers and unbelievers.

  245. because the evidence is there.

  246. It's too strong to be ignored by people

  247. who have any concept of the historical

  248. facts and the reality of the time of

  249. writing of these documents.

  250. And there's three books that I want to

  251. look at were written very very early.

  252. First Thessalonians, I'm skipping 2

  253. Thessalonians. It was written a couple

  254. of months later, but first Thessalonians

  255. is possibly the first letter, the first

  256. part of the New Testament is written

  257. down. Paul's letter to First

  258. Thessalonians. It's the oldest

  259. chronologically,

  260. even though it's dealing with things

  261. that are way past the birth, death, and

  262. resurrection of Jesus.

  263. First, first Thessalonians is very early

  264. and 2 Thessalonians came about a month a

  265. couple months later. Corinthians is the

  266. second that big book 1 Corinthians 16

  267. chapters. That's early.

  268. That's early.

  269. So, first Thessalonians and First

  270. Corinthians, I want to look at them just

  271. as a historian would. And then

  272. Galatians.

  273. Galatians. I want to I want to look at

  274. those documents and see what was being

  275. said when those documents were written.

  276. Before the four gospels were written.

  277. People like to fantasize that the four

  278. gospels are fiction and they just made

  279. it all up and that that that fiction

  280. produced faith in some people. Well, the

  281. four gospels weren't written yet.

  282. The gospel went out before the New

  283. Testament was written

  284. at Pentecost,

  285. 50 days after Jesus arose from the dead.

  286. None of the New Testament was written

  287. yet.

  288. And the gospel went out not just in

  289. Jerusalem, but in Judea and Samaria. And

  290. it's starting to go out to the uttermost

  291. part of the earth.

  292. Think about that just for a minute.

  293. So, let's go with me to First

  294. Thessalonians. And you say, "Why are we

  295. doing this, pastor? This is just a lot

  296. of details. I already believe in Jesus.

  297. I already I'm already saved." Well, a

  298. lot of people, you know, aren't.

  299. >> They're not saved in your family, in

  300. your neighborhood, on your job. They're

  301. not saved.

  302. And so if we want to have an intelligent

  303. uh credible uh witness to them, we have

  304. to do our homework. We have to be

  305. credible in our knowledge of the word

  306. and in our knowledge of some of these

  307. things to break through the excuses and

  308. break that people give and we gave them

  309. to in our unsaved days. And to break

  310. through the noise of people around us

  311. who are very ignorant and just make

  312. pronouncements they don't know they're

  313. even They don't even know what they're

  314. talking about. So look with me to First

  315. Thessalonians.

  316. Now it's very interesting in First

  317. Thessalonians if you just read it on

  318. your own. Count the number of times

  319. gospel appeared.

  320. It's all over the place

  321. in 1 Thessalonians 1:4 2:24 to89. And

    1 Thessalonians 1:4

  322. that's just getting started.

  323. The word gospel appears several times.

  324. And if you want to know what the gospel

  325. is, Paul spells it out in 1 Corinthians

  326. 15. It's that Christ died for our sins

  327. according to the scriptures. Was buried

  328. and rose again the third day according

  329. to the scriptures. And that he was seen

  330. of Cphus and then of the 12. And then uh

  331. you know he goes down the list.

  332. Now, it's interesting to me that this

  333. which is probably the first written book

  334. of the New Testament chronologically

  335. that Paul had already been to this

  336. church. This people, these people have

  337. already been saved. They've been saved

  338. for several months and he writes a

  339. letter to them. So, at this point, the

  340. gospel wasn't good news, new news to

  341. them, but it was good news.

  342. They were believers. They embraced it.

  343. They believed it. They were sharing it.

  344. So

  345. uh look with me in 1 Thessalonians 1:9.

    1 Thessalonians 1:9

  346. This is the first time in Thessalonians

  347. the word resurrection of Christ is

  348. explicitly used. 1:9 For they themselves

  349. show of us what manner of entering in we

  350. had to you how you turn to God from

  351. idols to serve the living and true God

  352. and to wait from his son from heaven

  353. whom he raised from the dead. even Jesus

  354. who delivered us from the wrath to come.

  355. Now this is not an announcement of

  356. something they don't know.

  357. This is something they already believed

  358. when Paul was there

  359. and started the church. Now he's writing

  360. to a church that's been started and this

  361. is a given. Nobody there is doubting

  362. this. They already believed it. He's

  363. going over what they already believe.

  364. When was this letter written? 51 AD.

  365. 51 AD. Jesus died at 30 or 31 AD. So 20

  366. years after Jesus died and rose again,

  367. we have people in Thessalonica,

  368. miles and miles and miles away from

  369. Jerusalem, that have heard the gospel

  370. and believed the gospel and are

  371. continuing to promote the gospel

  372. themselves.

  373. Thessalonica is in Greece

  374. and the Apostle Paul ministered in that

  375. church and started that church. Now

  376. these are baby Christians but they are

  377. people who've already believed the good

  378. news and are being ministered to Paul as

  379. baby Christians. But they'd already

  380. heard it before.

  381. The good news was old news to them at

  382. this point months old.

  383. How many of you read old newspapers?

  384. Usually you read the newspaper and

  385. that's it. I've read it, been through

  386. that. Once in a while we do. If we're

  387. out of town and newspaper comes and all

  388. catch up. Well, these people had

  389. believed the good news. Paul's not

  390. telling them something they didn't know.

  391. They'd already believed it. They already

  392. knew it. It's 51 AD.

  393. You realize we don't have any

  394. documentmentation of any ancient people

  395. like we have of Jesus and his

  396. resurrection.

  397. I'm talking Roman emperors. I'm talking

  398. philosophers. There's nothing like

  399. this is a very precious thing. First

  400. Thessalonians.

  401. Now, so these are baby Christians and

  402. the good news that that this writing was

  403. old news to them. They'd heard it

  404. before. They believed it for months and

  405. they were actually proclaiming. Now go

  406. with me to first Corinthians

  407. our 1 Corinthians chapter

    1 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  408. 6.

  409. Next on the list is 1 Corinthians.

  410. Paul had already been to Corenth.

  411. It's recorded in Acts 18.

  412. The church had already been started.

  413. Believers were already worshiping and

  414. assembling together.

  415. And Paul is writing a letter to them.

  416. And again, it's around 51 AD

  417. probably after Thessalonians.

  418. But notice in 1 Corinthians chapter 5

    1 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  419. chapter 6 verse 41.

  420. Chapter 6 verse 41.

  421. Uh, wait a minute. I'm I'm off the beam

  422. there somewhere. Hold on.

  423. of 41:14

  424. chapter 6 verse14.

  425. So the apostle Paul's writing to these

  426. folks they know they believe the gospel.

  427. They believed in the resurrection of

  428. Christ. Paul tells them that in chapter

  429. 15 verse one he rehearses it. And here

  430. other than 1 Corinthians 15 uh we will

  431. get to later. This is the first time in

  432. this letter Paul is explicit about the

  433. resurrection.

  434. And what he's doing is immorality is in

  435. some of the church. There's people

  436. fornicating. There's people that

  437. ignoring their responsibilities in the

  438. area of sexual morality. And some are

  439. even defending it.

  440. Sex is just like eating.

  441. I have an appetite for food. I have an

  442. appetite for sex. So I fulfill my

  443. appetite. That's normal. Appetite for

  444. sex. I fulfill that however I want.

  445. That's normal. And Paul was confronting

  446. that discontinuity and uh uh departure

  447. from Christian belief. So in verse 13 he

  448. says chap 1 Corinthians 6:13 foods for

    1 Corinthians 6:13

  449. the body and the body for foods. But God

  450. shall destroy both it and them. The body

  451. is not for fornication but for the Lord

  452. and the Lord for the body. And God has

  453. raised up the Lord and will raise up us

  454. by his own power. Your body's going into

  455. eternity.

  456. It's a temple of the Holy Spirit.

  457. You're not what you were.

  458. Begin to think like a Christian.

  459. The body's for the Lord.

  460. And he says in 15, "Know ye not your

  461. bodies are the members of Christ? Shall

  462. I take the members of Christ and make

  463. them the members of a harlot? God

  464. forbid."

  465. So he's really rebuking that isn't he's

  466. cleaning up that a problem that was

  467. there.

  468. And of course in 1 Corinthians 15

  469. the main chapter on resurrection

  470. he uses 58 verses

  471. 58 verses to deal with the resurrection

  472. of Jesus and the resurrection of

  473. Christians that follow from it. 58.

  474. He goes into great detail

  475. and uh really uh does what needs to be

  476. done on that particular subject. And

  477. it's a massive it's a massive thing what

  478. Paul does in 1 Corinthians 15. God

  479. spells it out very very clearly and very

  480. very explicitly and he starts with

  481. Easter and moves forward and shows all

  482. that what resurrection is and what it

  483. isn't. And he says, "How can some of you

  484. say there's no resurrection?"

  485. We'll get to that in a little bit. Go

  486. with me to Galatians 1,

  487. the third New Testament document.

  488. And depending on whether you believe in

  489. the north Galatia

  490. view or the south Galatia view, there's

  491. a little bit of changing on the dates,

  492. but probably 51 to 53 AD. So this is a

  493. third witness within 21 years of Jesus's

  494. death where the people are already saved

  495. and getting letters from others that are

  496. saved. They've already believed in the

  497. death, burial, and resurrection for

  498. salvation. They're being ministered to

  499. and encouraged.

  500. It's already going on very early.

  501. This people who are non-Christians

  502. believe these dates.

  503. People who historians accept these

  504. dates.

  505. This is not a subject for

  506. debate among people really know what's

  507. going on.

  508. Galatians chapter

  509. uh

  510. Galatians chapter

  511. uh let's see as we move through this

  512. book.

  513. It's let's start out in chapter 1. Now

  514. most of you know what Paul's doing. He's

  515. defending his gospel of grace versus the

  516. uh Judaizers. And he uses a very

  517. interesting thing. He uses a historical

  518. argument in the first two chapters. He

  519. uses a scriptural argument in chapters

  520. three and four. And he uses a practical

  521. argument in chapter five and six. He's

  522. very logical. He just blows the other

  523. people out of the water.

  524. And so, but how does he start the book?

  525. This great book of Galatians, one of my

  526. favorites. I hope it is one of yours.

  527. Paul, an apostle, not of men, neither by

  528. man, but by Jesus Christ and God the

  529. Father, who raised him from the dead.

  530. The very first verse in Galatians

  531. deals with the resurrection of Jesus.

  532. >> Amen.

  533. >> Now, he's going to let these people have

  534. it. I mean, he's not being he's not

  535. being polite.

  536. There's some there's some depth of anger

  537. in Paul that these churches would depart

  538. from the gospel.

  539. So he starts out with the resurrection

  540. of Jesus.

  541. The death, burial, and resurrection of

  542. Jesus is the gospel. And so he says,

  543. "Paul, an apostle, not of men, neither

  544. by man, but by Jesus Christ and God the

  545. Father, who raised him from the dead,

  546. and all the brethren who are with me

  547. unto the churches of Galatia." Remember,

  548. I confess when I was a young Christian,

  549. I used to think Galatia was one church.

  550. It's not one church. Galatia is a

  551. territory like Ohio.

  552. And so it's a province.

  553. These are the churches of Galatia. So

  554. this was something that has spread

  555. through several churches. This legalism

  556. of the Judaizers.

  557. And Paul's going to deal with it

  558. sharply.

  559. And he says in verse three, "Grace be to

  560. you and peace from God the Father and

  561. from the Lord Jesus Christ who gave

  562. himself for our sins that he might

  563. deliver us from the present evil age

  564. according to the will of God and our

  565. father. To him be glory forever and

  566. ever." And no compliments. Paul usually

  567. gives compliments. No compliments to

  568. these churches. You are making a very

  569. serious error. Legalism is a horrible

  570. thing.

  571. And so

  572. he says,"I marvel

  573. that you're so soon removed from him

  574. that called you into the grace of Christ

  575. to another gospel."

  576. Marvel that you could fall for this,

  577. which is not another.

  578. Now, those of you that read the Greek

  579. text or have read read the Greek text,

  580. there's two words for another. There's

  581. heteros and alos.

  582. Heteros means another of a different

  583. kind. Alas means another of the same

  584. kind.

  585. He says, "I marvel that you're so soon

  586. removed from him than the called you

  587. into the grace of Christ to another of a

  588. different kind gospel. A heteros gospel

  589. get heterosexual from heteros. Another

  590. of a different kind gospel

  591. which is not another allos which is not

  592. another of the same kind. What you're

  593. listening to is not a legitimate

  594. variation of real Christianity.

  595. It's totally illegitimate. It's another

  596. It's not another of the same kind. There

  597. are legitimate variations between true

  598. believers and churches. This is one of

  599. them,

  600. which is not another of the same kind.

  601. But there are some that trouble you and

  602. would change thoroughly. That's what he

  603. says. change thoroughly the gospel of

  604. Christ.

  605. You mean a little change

  606. like salvation's by grace through faith

  607. or salvation is by grace through faith

  608. plus circumcision and lawkeeping. That's

  609. just a little change. It changes it

  610. thoroughly.

  611. Changes it thoroughly.

  612. But though we or an angel from heaven

  613. preach any other gospel unto you than

  614. that which we preach to you, let him be

  615. a curse.

  616. As we said before, so I say now again,

  617. if any man preach any other gospel to

  618. you than you've received, let him be

  619. accursed. Oh, sorry, I didn't read verse

  620. eight. But though we or an angel from

  621. heaven preach any other gospel unto you

  622. than that which we preach to you, let

  623. him be accursed. Even if I come back,

  624. even if I change, don't you change.

  625. Some people put their faith in a

  626. preacher and not in the Lord. The

  627. preacher changes, they change.

  628. That's not saving faith.

  629. Our faith isn't in the preacher or the

  630. pastor. Our faith isn't in the local

  631. church we have. Our faith is in the

  632. Lord.

  633. So if the pastor goes wrong or the

  634. church goes wrong, we don't follow him.

  635. Don't follow him.

  636. Uh, that's exactly what Paul's saying.

  637. Do you think Paul was happy with these

  638. people?

  639. I think he was so upset he could already

  640. see straight.

  641. And yet he he starts out most of his

  642. letters start out with complimenting

  643. people or recognizing people. He just

  644. boom, right out of the shoot. And he's

  645. very giving a very strong exhortation.

  646. And so everything if you look back at

  647. verse one, Paul got his gospel from

  648. Jesus Christ who was raised from the

  649. dead. So everything Paul says

  650. is based on the fact that he's an

  651. apostle of the one who's raised from the

  652. dead.

  653. Um

  654. Paul would never have been saved it

  655. wasn't for the resurrection.

  656. But the greatest argument for the

  657. resurrection of Jesus is the salvation

  658. of Saul Tarsus where Saul became Paul

  659. and the man who was killing people who

  660. believe the gospel became became the man

  661. who was uh doing everything he could to

  662. bring others to believe the gospel.

  663. Now what do we see here in these three

  664. letters that we've chosen this morning?

  665. Well, number one, the Thessalonian

  666. church was mixed up and they they were

  667. quite mixed up

  668. uh on something. Remember, if you go to

  669. chapter 4,

  670. they thought uh that their fellow church

  671. members had died.

  672. What's going to happen to them? They

  673. didn't make the second coming.

  674. They were mixed up on the issues of dead

  675. believers.

  676. They were very mixed up on that. Paul

  677. corrects it in 1 Thessalonians 4. You

  678. know, no church is right on everything.

  679. And some people get mixed up on this or

  680. that.

  681. And Paul corrects them on that. He said,

  682. "Don't be mixed up by that. Jesus is

  683. coming. There's a reunion coming when

  684. the the risen Lord's coming and we're

  685. all going to be together. Don't worry

  686. about that."

  687. He he knew they were This is This is my

  688. point. The Thessalonians were mixed up

  689. on what's going to happen to dead

  690. believers, but they weren't mixed up on

  691. the resurrection of Jesus.

  692. Paul deals with them on the basis of

  693. what they already believe.

  694. They weren't mixed up on that. Read

  695. chapter 4 and Paul just puts it in

  696. perspective.

  697. The basis of what you already believe,

  698. this is what's going to happen to them

  699. and you in the future. The Galatian

  700. church was mixed up on salvation by

  701. grace. They turned to another gospel

  702. temporarily

  703. and uh Paul told them to stand fast in

  704. the liberty with which Christ has made

  705. us free and be not entangled again in

  706. the yoke of bondage. They were mixed up

  707. on satiriology, the way people are

  708. saved. Even they didn't get saved by

  709. that gospel, but then they started

  710. listening to another and it all got

  711. mixed together. But the Galatian church

  712. was not mixed up on the resurrection.

  713. They already believed that. There's no

  714. mixed up on that.

  715. The Corinthian church was very mixed up

  716. on all kinds of stuff.

  717. They were mixed up on all kinds of

  718. stuff. They began to doubt and even deny

  719. their own resurrection.

  720. They begin to doubt and deny the resurre

  721. physical resurrection of believers. But

  722. they never began they never doubted the

  723. physical resurrection of Jesus.

  724. I think they thought he's the exception

  725. because he's God.

  726. He was risen but we won't be.

  727. Now the reason they were mixed up is

  728. they were listening to Greek philosophy.

  729. And remember G Paul Paul preached uh to

  730. the philosophers in Athens, Greece which

  731. was right down the road.

  732. Jesus and the resurrection.

  733. But they scoffed at him. So it was very

  734. deep in gentile society that

  735. resurrection wasn't possible or

  736. resurrection of the dead wasn't possible

  737. or desirable.

  738. They believed in life after death be a

  739. disembodied spirit. And so somewhere in

  740. the Corinthian church, if you look at 1

  741. Corinthians 15, what happened? What

  742. happened? They began to say, "Well,

  743. Jesus was risen from the dead, but you

  744. know, he's the son of God, and that was

  745. special, but we will survive death, but

  746. only as dis as as disembodied spirits."

  747. Didn't get that from Paul.

  748. They got it from Greek philosophy and it

  749. was mixing them all up. So, every one of

  750. these churches got mixed up on

  751. something, but none of them got mixed up

  752. on who Jesus was and who and that he

  753. rose from the dead. They already knew

  754. that.

  755. So, Paul is arguing from what they

  756. believed about Jesus's resurrection to

  757. prove their own resurrection.

  758. Understand what he's doing in 1

  759. Corinthians 15.

  760. So, how important is all this? It's

  761. very, very important.

  762. is very very important. You don't want

  763. to be these are major issues. We we have

  764. to be clear on some things first on the

  765. gospel and what happened to Jesus but

  766. also on ourselves. Now let's go to 1

  767. Corinthians 15 and let's start thinking

  768. about this a little fuller

  769. together. 1 Corinthians 15.

  770. Now follow me in this and see if what

  771. I'm saying is not so.

  772. Paul saved this for last

  773. and then he uses 58 ver I mean he really

  774. hit this subject.

  775. Listen Christian, I'm going to tell you

  776. something. If you're saved, your body

  777. cannot stay in the grave anymore than

  778. Jesus did.

  779. >> Amen.

  780. >> You get that? The cemetery is not your

  781. final resting place. The cemetery is a

  782. motel for your body till the trumpet

  783. sounds.

  784. It's a temporary resting place.

  785. And so because we will be risen and our

  786. lowly body is going to be made like his

  787. glorious body.

  788. And Paul says, "Moreover, brethren, I

  789. notice what he's saying. He's arguing

  790. this this subject. He knows where he's

  791. going. Remember before he started

  792. writing chapter 15, he had all this in

  793. his head.

  794. So he says, "Moreover, brethren, I

  795. declare to you the gospel

  796. which I preached to you." That's when I

  797. when the church started, this is before

  798. 51 AD.

  799. The preaching came before the letter.

  800. And in which you stand by which you're

  801. also saved, if you keep in memory what I

  802. preached to you, unless you believed in

  803. vain.

  804. For I delivered unto you first of all

  805. that which I also received that Christ

  806. died for our sins according to the

  807. scriptures. And that he was buried and

  808. rose again the third day.

  809. According to the scriptures he was seen

  810. of Cphus then of the 12. After that he's

  811. seen of 500 brethren at once of whom the

  812. greater part remained to this present

  813. time and some are fallen asleep.

  814. And that after that he was seen of

  815. James. Then of all the apostles and last

  816. of all you seen of me also as one born

  817. out of due time. For I am the least of

  818. the apostles, not fit to be called an

  819. apostle because I persecuted the church

  820. of God. By the grace of God, I am what I

  821. am.

  822. And his grace which was bestowed on me

  823. was not in vain. And I labored more

  824. abundantly than they all. Yet not I, but

  825. the grace of God which was with me.

  826. Therefore, whether it were I or they, so

  827. we preached, and so you believe.

  828. These people believe the gospel. They

  829. wouldn't be saved if they didn't. I

  830. believe they still believed it.

  831. They just didn't apply it to themselves

  832. the way they should.

  833. So, they had a mixture of Greek

  834. philosophy and biblical theology.

  835. Now, here's where Paul opens up. After

  836. he shows where they all agree, he says

  837. this.

  838. Now, if Christ be preached that he rose

  839. from the dead, how

  840. say some of you, he didn't say all of

  841. you, some of you,

  842. some among you, that there's no

  843. resurrection of the dead.

  844. How can you say that? How can you be

  845. that inconsistent?

  846. This isn't systematic theology at all.

  847. And if Christ be risen, then our

  848. preaching is vain, and your faith is

  849. also vain. Yes, in we're found a false

  850. witness of God, because we've testified

  851. to God that he raised up Christ whom he

  852. raised not up. If so be that the dead

  853. rise not, do the math on what you're

  854. thinking. If the dead, if resurrection

  855. is not desirable or possible, then Jesus

  856. didn't rise from the dead. Even he

  857. didn't.

  858. Now, nobody was saying he didn't.

  859. They were just saying, "We won't."

  860. And Paul says, "You are inconsistent.

  861. You're being inconsistent."

  862. Yay. Verse 15, "We're found false

  863. witnesses of God because we testified of

  864. God that he raised up Christ, whom he

  865. raised not up, if so be the dead rise

  866. not." If the dead rise not, then is not

  867. Christ raised. If Christ is not raised,

  868. your faith is vain and you're yet in

  869. your sins, then also they are fallen

  870. asleep in Jesus or perished. the very

  871. thing the Thessalonians are worried

  872. about.

  873. If in this life only we have hope in

  874. Christ, we of all men most miserable.

  875. But now is Christ risen from the dead

  876. and become the first fruits of them that

  877. slept. He's a public person. He had

  878. authority from God. He won't be risen

  879. alone. He's the first fruits and the

  880. many fruits follow the first fruits.

  881. For since by man came death, by man came

  882. also the resurrection of the dead. For

  883. as in Adam all die, even so in Christ

  884. shall all be made alive. Every man in

  885. his own order, Christ the fruit first

  886. fruits. Afterward, they that are Christ

  887. at his coming. That's pretty clear,

  888. right? It's pretty clear. It's

  889. incredible clarity.

  890. Um,

  891. I hope that's helpful as you think

  892. through what Paul's saying. If it's I

  893. hope it's helpful if you think about

  894. what he's correcting.

  895. Remember Paul said in public about the

  896. resurrection. This thing wasn't done in

  897. a corner.

  898. All kinds of people knew about the

  899. claims of the resurrection.

  900. But these people have actually believed

  901. it in Corenth through Paul's ministry.

  902. Guess how far Corinth is from Jerusalem.

  903. 815 miles as the crow flies. And there

  904. was no planes to take him there. 815

  905. miles.

  906. Churches were started in that place and

  907. Paul was the one that started it.

  908. So this is what we've got. that

  909. wonderful good news burst do burst out

  910. in Jerusalem and went all the way to

  911. Corenth and uh Paul's writing to

  912. Christians in Corenth at 51 AD.

  913. The marvelous thing is

  914. church history,

  915. Middle Eastern geography and archaeology

  916. all match what Luke said in Acts about

  917. the spread of the gospel. So history and

  918. geography and archaeology all come

  919. together.

  920. Now there is a good news that's new

  921. news. I never heard that before.

  922. There's a resurrection. There's

  923. salvation.

  924. There's life after death. Oh, I might

  925. believe in that, but I never heard about

  926. resurrection of the body. And you hear

  927. about Jesus's resurrection and then his

  928. our resurrection. He's the first fruits

  929. of them that slept. That's good news.

  930. It's new news. I never heard that

  931. before. But then as we believe that and

  932. receive that, the good news becomes old

  933. news for us.

  934. And

  935. it's still good news, but it's old news.

  936. And it's the best news we ever heard,

  937. but it's not really new news anymore.

  938. And so

  939. hopefully there's some clarity there in

  940. our teaching.

  941. God help us to understand Paul's

  942. argument here.

  943. Jesus Christ expects us

  944. to proclaim the gospel and correct those

  945. who are confused by others on the

  946. ramifications

  947. of it.

  948. And in 1 Corinthians 15, this church got

  949. they were combining cultural and

  950. philosophical Greek concepts with the

  951. gospel of the resurrection. And it

  952. blinded them. It blinded them to their

  953. own resurrection.

  954. And one of the ones reasons you

  955. shouldn't be immoral and hang out with

  956. prostitutes, that body is going into

  957. eternity.

  958. That body belongs to the Lord. Don't say

  959. it doesn't matter what you do in your

  960. body. As long as your mind's okay, your

  961. soul's okay, it won't hurt. That's

  962. inconsistent completely.

  963. And uh

  964. if you let me put it this way, if you

  965. ask people in the Corinthian church in

  966. 51 AD, was Jesus of Nazareth risen risen

  967. from the dead? I think a 100% of them

  968. would say he's risen. Then if you ask

  969. him, will you be raised from the dead in

  970. the future? Well, they were divided.

  971. Some said yes, some said no. Because

  972. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15, some of

  973. you, it hadn't infected the whole

  974. church, but there were some in the

  975. church, enough in the church that Paul

  976. said, I this a little le 11 is a whole

  977. lump. I'm not going to let that slide.

  978. So, in 1512, please look at it. Now, if

  979. Christ be preached the erosion of the

  980. dead, how say some of you, whether this

  981. 10%, 20%, 50%, whatever it is, some of

  982. you.

  983. So, thank God they all weren't mixed up,

  984. but some of them were. Remember, a

  985. little le 11's a whole lump. So, you

  986. don't say, "Well, it's just a little

  987. group. They're not going to correct

  988. that." No.

  989. And so, very important stuff. Now, the

  990. logic here is very clear, and I'm not

  991. going to go into this this morning, but

  992. Jesus's physical resurrection demands

  993. ours. He's the first fruits, Paul's

  994. going to say, of those that slept.

  995. First fruits demands that there's going

  996. to be others followed.

  997. And very important,

  998. the good news

  999. about Jesus's resurrection

1000. should be old news, but the best news

  1001. we've ever had.

  1002. I've known a long time. I'm thankful I

1003. was saved 50 years ago or 10 years ago

1004. or 5 years ago. It's old news, but it's

1005. still good news. It's the best news that

  1006. anybody could ever have.

1007. No matter how long we know it, no matter

1008. how old we get, it'll always be the best

1009. news. Even if it's old news, and we've

  1010. known it for 10, 20, 50 years.

1011. Now, there's multiple applications to

1012. this. Let me try to hit some of these.

1013. If a doctor says to me, and you're going

  1014. to die, Pastor Hixon,

1015. you got something wrong with you and

1016. looks like we can't do anything for you.

  1017. Well,

1018. okay. You got three months to live. And

1019. he comes in the next day. Good news,

1020. Pastor Hixon. You got 10 more years.

1021. Well, it depends on how you look at it.

1022. I could be in heaven. You got 10 more

1023. years here. Okay. Well, I was hoping I

1024. was going to heaven before that, but I

1025. got 10 more years. I got 10 more years.

1026. Uh, that's good news. kind of good news

1027. depending on how you look at it,

  1028. especially if you're infeebled.

1029. The good news of the Bible

1030. is that I can't stay in the grave any

  1031. more than Jesus could.

  1032. I'm connected with him.

1033. He's the first fruits and afterwards

1034. those that are Christ and his God.

1035. So very, very important. The good news

1036. is not something invented by Christian

1037. leaders centuries after the events. The

1038. good news is something that happened and

1039. people were there when it happened and

1040. they proclaimed it 50 days after it

1041. happened in the center of the people who

  1042. killed him.

1043. And this was no let's put a happy face

1044. on a terrible tragedy. This was good

  1045. news.

1046. It wasn't good news that the Sanhedrin

1047. wanted to hear. It was bad news to them

1048. because they'd murdered the Lord, but it

1049. was good news if they would hear it.

1050. This is not something the church

1051. invented to make money. How many people

1052. have you heard say that?

1053. They just made up the story.

1054. Jesus died, so they figured out, well,

1055. let's make this up and then we can still

1056. be together and uh proclaim this and

1057. make a lot of money. You know the one

1058. reason the Apostle Paul did not take

1059. money when he started new churches

1060. so they wouldn't say he was in it for

  1061. the money.

1062. That was Paul. He took money from the

1063. Philippians because they were so tight.

  1064. Nobody else.

1065. Because that they're in it for the money

1066. is as old as the gospel itself.

1067. People been using that excuse to stay

1068. away from Christianity. Now, we know

1069. there are people in the ministry for the

1070. money. Apostate churches, all kinds of

1071. churches ricking in the dough. That has

1072. nothing to do with what I'm talking

1073. about. The same Bible that

1074. preaches the gospel talks about enemies

1075. of the gospel and false Christianity.

1076. And the warning ministry is there. So,

1077. don't use that excuse. If there were no

1078. warning ministry, you might have an

1079. excuse. If as if we expected everything

  1080. that called itself Christian

1081. New Testament itself, every second book

1082. is a warning against false teaching. 2

1083. Corinthians, 2 Thessalonians, you know,

1084. second John, all the all all the

  1085. not limited to that.

1086. So holy angels celebrate it, but you

1087. won't believe it. You see nothing in it.

1088. You say they're just in it for the

  1089. money.

1090. The fool has said in his heart there is

1091. no God. The fool said in his heart there

1092. is no resurrection. This world's my this

1093. world's all I got. I'm not giving any of

1094. this up. I'm living for what I got.

1095. Church is just a scam. I don't want to

1096. be taken in. Listen, you are you are

1097. headed for a Christless hell. Life is

  1098. serious.

1099. You have an opportunity to be forgiven.

1100. You have an opportunity to be saved. You

1101. have an opportunity to be given new

  1102. life.

1103. There's a a movie Tom Hanks made it in

  1104. 2020.

  1105. I watched it on television. I don't know

1106. how I got it. I've forgotten that.

1107. But it's a western and you know I like

1108. western science. I confess that Lord.

1109. But Tom Hanks in that particular movie

1110. is playing an American Civil War

  1111. Confederate

1112. uh veteran who is a captain.

1113. The war is over and he's just keeping

1114. himself alive. His wife is dead through

1115. chalera. He's in Texas and his his he's

  1116. he's made a job for himself.

1117. He goes around to these towns that are

1118. out in the middle of nowhere and reads

1119. the news from the newspaper to them.

  1120. That's what he does.

1121. In other words, they don't have any

1122. newspapers there. So he he he but he he

  1123. charges them a dime.

1124. You got to give me the dime and then

1125. I'll read the news to you. So he gets a

1126. group of people in a building and he

1127. reads the news. It the movie is called

  1128. News of the World.

1129. And along the way, he finds a

  1130. 10-year-old girl. It's been a while

1131. since I've seen that movie. She was

1132. captured by the Indians. Her parents

1133. were killed. She doesn't speak Indian

  1134. English hardly anymore.

1135. And he rescues her and she starts

1136. following him around and so forth.

1137. Now the it takes place it says in this

  1138. in 1870.

  1139. And so that's what he's doing. He's

1140. reading the newspaper to people. And

1141. what are the people paying a dime to

1142. hear? News of the world.

1143. Now just like a dollar is not the same

1144. now as it was when I was a kid. I

1145. remember going into the gas station and

  1146. getting $2 worth.

  1147. Although you remember that

  1148. I'll take $2.

1149. Dollars went a lot farther in my youth

  1150. than they go now.

1151. But I don't know how much a dime was

1152. worth in those days. But there were

1153. actually people in that movie that were

1154. paying the dime to hear news of the

1155. world. They want something. What's going

1156. on over out east? What's going on in

  1157. other places?

1158. and they would pay that.

1159. It's an interesting movie and Tom Hanks

1160. is taking off with the girl and he gets

1161. attacked by some people who want to

1162. capture the girl and they get in a

1163. shootout and his revolver is is out of

1164. bullets and that all he's got a

1165. doublebarreled shotgun and he's shot

1166. that he's just shooting birdshot at him.

1167. He hasn't got anything else and they're

1168. laughing at him. Oh, you got birdshot.

1169. And the and the girl has some shotgun

  1170. shells

  1171. that are empty.

1172. And she puts dimes. He's got powder, but

1173. he has no lead. So they put they put the

1174. powder in the shell and they put the

1175. dimes on top of it and he kills the last

1176. two bad guys with the dimes. It's a

1177. fascinating interesting story if you

  1178. want to watch it.

1179. But my point of that whole illustration

1180. is men want to hear

1181. news from the outside world.

1182. What's going on? We want to hear it,

1183. too. What's going on over east? What's

1184. going on over here? We like to hear it.

1185. Sometimes we get overoccupied with it.

1186. And uh we we'd pay to get news of the

  1187. world.

  1188. This news,

1189. this news is more important than any

1190. news that has ever come to this planet.

  1191. And it's

  1192. no charge.

  1193. No charge.

1194. The gospel is good news. It's not from

1195. the outside world, but from

1196. heaven, which is outside of this world.

  1197. It's heaven's message to fallen man.

1198. It's good news. It's old news to the

1199. saved, but it's new news to the unsaved.

1200. God, help us to believe it, to proclaim

1201. it, to retain it, to be experts in it so

1202. we can deliver it clearly.

1203. One theological writer said, "The gospel

1204. is the joyous proclamation of God's

1205. redemptive activity in Christ Jesus on

1206. behalf of man enslaved by sin. That's

1207. right. That's the good news.

1208. Paul uses the word gospel 60 times in

  1209. his writings.

1210. And the same writer said, "The

1211. resurrection was the catalyst was

1212. precipitated in the minds of the

1213. disciples the total significance of

1214. God's redemptive activity. It released

  1215. the gospel.

1216. Many pulpits don't teach it and many

1217. people don't hear it. Even if their

1218. church goes goers, they don't hear about

1219. Jesus in the resurrection. And if they

1220. do hear it, sometimes it's distorted or

  1221. changed into something else.

1222. Couple of illustrations and I'm done.

  1223. 1958,

1224. America's first commercial jet air

  1225. service began

1226. with the flight of the Boeing 707.

1227. I'm old enough to remember when PL

  1228. propes

  1229. came into Columbus.

1230. No jets yet. I was a little kid and I'd

1231. come see my aunt flying in from Buffalo.

  1232. In 1958, America's first commercial jet

1233. service began with the flight of the

  1234. Boeing 707. A month after that flight, a

1235. traveler on a piston engine proper

  1236. propeller-driven DC6 airliner struck up

  1237. a conversation with a fellow passenger.

1238. The passenger happened to be a Boeing

  1239. engineer.

1240. The traveler asked the engineer about

1241. the new jet aircraft, whereupon the

1242. engineer began speaking at length about

1243. extensive testing a Boeing had done on

1244. the jet engine before bringing it into

  1245. commercial service, he recounted

1246. Boeing's experience with engines from

  1247. the B17 to the B-52.

1248. And when his traveling companion asked

1249. him if he himself had yet flown on the

1250. new 707 airliner, the engineer replied,

  1251. "I think I'll wait until it's been in

  1252. service for a while.

  1253. The gospel

  1254. has been in service

1255. since the fall of man

1256. in one form or another. Seed of the

  1257. woman grows the serpent's head. That's

  1258. the proto evangelical.

1259. John the Baptist preached the gospel

1260. when he b when in his baptism service.

1261. Yes, it was the gospel of the kingdom.

1262. Jesus preached the gospel of the

1263. kingdom. Now we have the gospel of

1264. grace. But it's the same gospel.

1265. It's the same message. There's good news

  1266. from heaven.

  1267. There's good news. The kingdom's coming.

1268. The good news is the king has come. The

1269. good news is salvation's by grace

  1270. through faith

  1271. in Jesus Christ.

1272. And this writer says of this the uh jet

1273. engine thing even enthusiastic talking

1274. about our faith doesn't means much if we

1275. aren't also willing to put our lives

  1276. where our mouth is.

1277. You know people say put your money where

  1278. your mouth is.

1279. This illustration says put your lives

  1280. where your mouth.

1281. You believe in the resurrection, live

  1282. like it.

1283. John Flavl was an old preacher.

1284. And he said something very remarkable.

  1285. I'll end with this.

1286. He said, "There be two signal and

  1287. remarkable acts of faith.

  1288. Both exceedingly difficult."

1289. Two signal and remarkable acts of faith.

1290. Both exceedingly difficult. its first

1291. act and its last. The first is a great

1292. venture that it makes of itself upon

1293. Christ. I believe in Jesus Christ, God

1294. incarnate, died for my sins, rose again.

1295. That's the first. The last is the great

1296. venture to cast oneself into the ocean

1297. of eternity upon the credit of a

  1298. promise.

  1299. Isn't that what we're doing?

1300. The Bible promises us eternal life

1301. through Jesus Christ our Lord.

1302. The wages of sin is death, but the gift

1303. of God is eternal life through Jesus

1304. Christ our Lord. That's the point.

1305. Do you believe the promise?

1306. Is that real to you?

1307. Salvation comes when we believe the

  1308. promise.

1309. And when our time to die comes,

1310. what are we going to be thinking about?

  1311. If we're a Christian, we're going to be

1312. thinking about the gospel. If we're a

1313. Christian, we're going to be thinking

  1314. about the promise.

  1315. I'm going into eternity. I'm leaving

1316. this life. I've never left here before,

  1317. but I got this

1318. from the God who cannot lie.

1319. Father, we thank you for our section of

1320. scripture today. If anyone here is not

1321. yet saved, maybe a church goer or even a

1322. Bible reader, but been afraid to commit,

  1323. holding off,

1324. always saying they want more evidence,

  1325. but

  1326. it's never enough.

1327. We pray, Father, you'd work through your

1328. word. Most people are born again through

  1329. the word of God.

1330. Some are saved the first time they hear.

1331. Some hear many times before they are

1332. saved. Some here years before they're

1333. saved. What Whatever you want to do

1334. today with this message, accomplish your

1335. will. Faith comes by hearing, hearing by

  1336. the word of God.

1337. We thank you for the savior who is

1338. delivered because of our offenses and

1339. raised again because of our

  1340. justification.

1341. As foolish and fallible and failures

1342. that we are, we're not justified by our

1343. works but by his work. And we rest in

1344. that, rejoice in that. And we know that

1345. he's coming again. And all that are in

1346. the graves will hear his voice.

1347. some to everlasting life, some to

1348. everlasting shame and contempt. Our Lord

1349. is the has got the keys to Hades and

  1350. death.

1351. And he's got the key of our grave. We

  1352. thank you. He does.

  1353. Jesus name. Amen.

1354. Okay. Our closing song is number

  1355. loving you more,

  1356. trusting you more.

1357. May the power of your love and the light

  1358. of your word shine

1359. to a sin darkened world. As we go from

  1360. this place,
