  1. Good morning. It's good to be with you guys to worship.

  2. If you would please turn your Bibles to Revelation chapter 1.

    Revelation 1 chapter mention

  3. And if you don't have a Bible, please raise your hand and we'd love to give you a copy that you can have and you can use.

  4. Just began this series in the book of Revelation two weeks ago.

  5. We're in Revelation 1 verses 9 to 20 this morning.

    Revelation 1:9–20

  6. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  7. Heavenly Father, we ask you this morning to reveal your son Jesus Christ to us in all his glory.

  8. So that we know him and worship him as he really is.

  9. Rather than the way we imagine him to be.

  10. Lord, we don't want to reduce Jesus to our small categories.

  11. We want our vision of our risen Lord Jesus to be enlarged this morning.

  12. So we plead with you, Father.

  13. By your spirit, speak to us.

  14. From your word, address us.

  15. Humble us and exalt the name of your son Jesus.

  16. In his precious name we pray.

  17. Amen.

  18. If you're able, please stand for the reading of God's word.

  19. This is the way we honor God as he addresses us from the scriptures.

  20. Let me read from Revelation chapter 1 verses 9 to 20.

    Revelation 1:9–20

  21. I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance that are in Jesus,

  22. was on the island called Patmos on account of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.

  23. I was in the spirit on the Lord's day and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet saying,

  24. Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches,

  25. to Ephesus and to Samyra and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.

  26. Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands.

  27. And in the midst of the lampstands, one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest.

  28. The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow.

  29. His eyes were like a flame of fire.

  30. His feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace.

  31. And his voice was like the roar of many waters.

  32. In his right hand he held seven stars.

  33. From his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword.

  34. And his face was like the sun shining in full strength.

  35. When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead.

  36. But he laid his right hand on me saying,

  37. Fear not, I am the first and the last.

  38. And the living one.

  39. I died and behold, I am alive forevermore.

  40. And I have the keys of death and Hades.

  41. Write therefore the things that you have seen,

  42. those that are and those that are to take place after this.

  43. Ask for the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand

  44. and the seven golden lampstands.

  45. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches.

  46. And the seven lampstands are the seven churches.

  47. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  48. You may be seated.

  49. If you try to picture Jesus or imagine Jesus,

  50. what comes to your mind?

  51. I know maybe some of you picture actor Jim,

  52. what's his name, Jim Caviezel from The Passion of the Christ.

  53. I know there's a lot of Chosen fans in our church.

  54. Maybe some of you guys think of Jonathan Rumi from The Chosen series.

  55. Or maybe you think of the famous painting

  56. by the 20th century American artist Warner Salmon,

  57. The Head of Christ.

  58. While their portrayals of Jesus might be well-meaning

  59. and perhaps even pious,

  60. they can never come close to depicting the real Jesus.

  61. Because Jesus is the image of the invisible God.

  62. And it's not a coincidence that no portrait of Jesus

  63. has been passed down to us from the first century.

  64. Not one person in this whole world

  65. knows exactly what Jesus looked like

  66. because Jesus passed down to us his word,

  67. not his picture.

  68. But what if God himself,

  69. in his infallible word,

  70. were to give us a picture of Jesus?

  71. Not as an exact representation of Jesus,

  72. but as a symbolic revelation of what he is like.

  73. His character,

  74. his attributes,

  75. his power.

  76. That picture would be worth meditating on.

  77. Thinking about over and over in our minds.

  78. And that's exactly what we have here

  79. in Revelation 1, 9 to 20.

  80. God revealed this glorious vision of Jesus to John

  81. and he instructed John to write it down

  82. for us, for the church.

  83. To remind us that we need not fear

  84. in the midst of tribulation,

  85. because Christ is the resurrected Lord

  86. who reigns over the church.

  87. That's the main point of this passage.

  88. And we're going to first talk about our situation

  89. that John paints,

  90. and then about our Lord,

  91. and finally what our response should be

  92. because of that.

  93. In verses 9 to 11,

  94. John describes his situation

  95. and the situation of the seven churches

  96. that he is writing to.

  97. He says in verse 9,

  98. Before he gets into the tribulations,

  99. John describes himself as a brother of the Christians

  100. to whom he is writing.

  101. This conveys the incredible reality

  102. that we as Christians

  103. are those who have been united by faith

  104. to Jesus Christ,

  105. God's only son,

  106. his only begotten son.

  107. And through that relationship union with Jesus,

  108. we have been adopted as God's children,

  109. his sons and daughters.

  110. And it's because of that,

  111. because we have God in common

  112. as our heavenly father,

  113. that we are now brothers and sisters

  114. in the family of God.

  115. So this is John's way of identifying

  116. with the believers to whom he is writing.

  117. He could have introduced himself

  118. as the apostle John,

  119. because he is an apostle.

  120. He's one of the 12 apostles.

  121. But instead,

  122. he puts himself on the same level playing field

  123. and introduces himself as John,

  124. your brother.

  125. This is John's way of saying to believers,

  126. I am one of you.

  127. I am with you.

  128. Because we refer to each other

  129. as brothers and sisters so often,

  130. as Christians,

  131. sometimes we don't grapple

  132. with the significant reality that that is.

  133. Do you remember what Jesus said

  134. in Mark 3.35,

  135. whoever does the will of God,

  136. he is my brother and sister.

  137. Romans 8.29 says

  138. that Christians have been predestined

  139. to be conformed to the image

  140. of God's son, Jesus,

  141. in order that he might be

  142. the firstborn among many brothers.

  143. Hebrews 2.11 says that Jesus

  144. is not ashamed to call us

  145. his brothers and sisters.

  146. So do you realize then

  147. what a stunning reality is

  148. that when we refer to one another

  149. as brothers and sisters in Christ,

  150. we are saying

  151. that the Lord God Almighty

  152. is our Father,

  153. and we're saying

  154. that Jesus Christ,

  155. the resurrected Lord,

  156. whose name is above every name,

  157. is our brother.

  158. We're declaring

  159. that we are heirs of God

  160. in fellow heirs with Christ,

  161. that all of God's heavenly inheritance

  162. is ours

  163. because we are God's adopted children,

  164. and that we will reign forever

  165. in God's kingdom

  166. as co-heirs with Christ.

  167. That's why John continues

  168. in saying

  169. that I am your partner

  170. in the kingdom

  171. that is in Jesus.

  172. The kingdom of God

  173. belongs to us

  174. because we're brothers and sisters

  175. in Christ.

  176. We're royal heirs.

  177. We're in the same family

  178. bound together

  179. by the blood of Christ.

  180. It's of utmost importance

  181. always to remember this,

  182. but especially

  183. when there's suffering,

  184. tribulation,

  185. and persecution,

  186. spiritual warfare

  187. that seek to divide us.

  188. We need to remember

  189. that we are a family

  190. and that we are

  191. in this together.

  192. Our enemy is working

  193. around the clock

  194. to make us forget

  195. this reality,

  196. but we must not

  197. forget this reality.

  198. In addition to identifying

  199. himself as a brother,

  200. John himself identifies

  201. as a partner

  202. partners by definition

  203. share in some kind

  204. of endeavor together.

  205. They're fellow partakers

  206. in a common mission

  207. or common thing.

  208. So what is it

  209. that we are partners in?

  210. We already talked

  211. about the kingdom,

  212. which is a glorious reality,

  213. but there are two other things

  214. on this list

  215. that we might not think

  216. of as so glorious.

  217. He says we are partners

  218. in the tribulation

  219. and the kingdom

  220. and the patient endurance

  221. that are in Jesus.

  222. These three things

  223. are wrapped up together.

  224. You can't separate them.

  225. You get the tribulation

  226. along with the kingdom,

  227. along with the patient endurance

  228. that those two things require.

  229. It's because Jesus

  230. went through tribulation

  231. with patient endurance

  232. and it's because

  233. Jesus' glorification

  234. to the right hand

  235. of the Father

  236. came through his death

  237. on the cross,

  238. through his own tribulation.

  239. That's why we also

  240. must share in that glory

  241. through death

  242. and suffering.

  243. Jesus lays out

  244. the pattern right here

  245. in Revelation 118.

  246. I died

  247. and behold,

  248. I am alive forevermore.

  249. It's only those

  250. who die to themselves,

  251. renounce their sins

  252. and renounce their pride

  253. and turn to Christ.

  254. Those are the only ones

  255. who can live forever

  256. and enjoy the resurrection life

  257. that God has won

  258. for us in Christ.

  259. That's why Jesus

  260. says to his followers

  261. in John 16, 33,

  262. in the world,

  263. you will have tribulation.

  264. But take heart,

  265. I have overcome the world.

  266. Tribulation is just a,

  267. it's just a fancy word

  268. for acute distress

  269. or suffering,

  270. a severe trial.

  271. Many of you are going through

  272. different kinds of tribulations.

  273. As you fight sin in your life,

  274. as you battle our spiritual enemies

  275. in your life,

  276. as you face those

  277. who oppose God

  278. and persecute God's people,

  279. you face the tribulation.

  280. But the tribulation

  281. that we face is normal.

  282. We need to remember

  283. that that's a part

  284. of what God has promised

  285. that we will have

  286. to experience

  287. because it's only

  288. through patient endurance

  289. that we can attain

  290. that glory.

  291. Times of peace

  292. and prosperity

  293. for the Christians

  294. are the exception,

  295. not the norm.

  296. I've shared some

  297. of these statistics

  298. with you from previous years

  299. of Open Door USA

  300. about the suffering

  301. of Christians

  302. throughout the world.

  303. This organization

  304. publishes the World Watch List

  305. every year,

  306. which lists 50 countries

  307. where the persecution

  308. against Christians

  309. is most severe.

  310. And according to their

  311. 2023 report,

  312. more than 360 million

  313. Christians today

  314. live in places

  315. where they experience

  316. high, very high,

  317. or extremely high

  318. levels of persecution.

  319. And that number

  320. has been going up

  321. every single year

  322. that I've been following

  323. this watch list.

  324. That's one in seven

  325. Christians in the world.

  326. Over the last year,

  327. 5,621 Christians

  328. were murdered

  329. for their faith.

  330. 2,110 church buildings

  331. were attacked,

  332. destroyed.

  333. 4,542 Christians

  334. were detained.

  335. That means on average,

  336. 15 or 16 Christians

  337. are killed

  338. for their faith

  339. every single day.

  340. This day,

  341. 15 or 16 Christians

  342. will die for their faith

  343. somewhere in the world.

  344. That's the reality

  345. that many of the members

  346. of the body of Christ

  347. live in.

  348. And most of them

  349. don't make the news.

  350. For many Christians

  351. around the world,

  352. the cost of being

  353. a disciple of Jesus Christ

  354. is very, very high.

  355. And even though

  356. there is an overt

  357. persecution of Christians

  358. in our society today

  359. because we do not live

  360. as citizens of earth,

  361. but rather as citizens

  362. of heaven,

  363. and because we operate

  364. with a very different

  365. set of purposes

  366. and priorities

  367. than the people

  368. of this world,

  369. sometimes we are looked at

  370. as a strange

  371. and a regressive

  372. and even ridiculous bunch.

  373. Jesus said this

  374. in John 15

  375. that because the world

  376. hated him

  377. that it will also hate us

  378. because we are not

  379. of the world.

  380. If we belong to the world,

  381. they would love us.

  382. But because we don't

  383. and because they don't

  384. understand,

  385. there is hatred

  386. from the world.

  387. I am hoping

  388. that this is

  389. a helpful adjustment

  390. of the perspective

  391. that some of us

  392. Christians can have.

  393. God does not promise us

  394. a life free of suffering.

  395. He never promised

  396. that once you come

  397. to faith in him

  398. that your life

  399. will be smooth sailing.

  400. Rather,

  401. he promises us

  402. tribulation

  403. and commands us

  404. to patiently endure.

  405. John himself

  406. was enduring this.

  407. We could see that

  408. because he says

  409. that he was

  410. on the island of Patmos

  411. on account of the word

  412. of God

  413. and testimony of Jesus.

  414. This repeats

  415. what he said earlier

  416. in verse 2.

  417. Patmos was a Greek island

  418. on the Aegean Sea

  419. where the Romans

  420. back then

  421. used as a destination

  422. for political exiles,

  423. so political criminals.

  424. So John is there

  425. in exile

  426. because he faithfully

  427. bore witness to Jesus,

  428. because he proclaimed

  429. the word of God

  430. and the testimony

  431. of Jesus,

  432. because he proclaimed

  433. that Jesus is king,

  434. that he is the Messiah

  435. and refused to bow down

  436. to the emperor cult

  437. because he refused

  438. to worship the pagan gods

  439. of the Romans.

  440. They saw him

  441. as an enemy,

  442. as an insidious influence

  443. in their society

  444. and they exiled him

  445. to this island.

  446. And John's telling

  447. the Christians

  448. not to lose heart

  449. as a fellow sufferer

  450. for the sake

  451. of the gospel.

  452. I, John,

  453. am your partner

  454. in the tribulation

  455. and the patient endurance.

  456. We are suffering together.

  457. You're not alone.

  458. We are in this together,

  459. so don't lose heart.

  460. Keep on persevering

  461. and keep on bearing witness

  462. to Jesus

  463. no matter what.

  464. And having introduced himself

  465. and having identified

  466. with his hearers,

  467. John then relays

  468. the vision

  469. that he received

  470. from the Lord

  471. and he describes

  472. how he came to that vision.

  473. He says in verse 10,

  474. I was in the spirit

  475. on the Lord's day.

  476. That's referring

  477. to a prophetic vision.

  478. He's being carried along

  479. by the spirit.

  480. That's how people

  481. receive prophecy,

  482. as it says,

  483. 2 Peter 1.21.

  484. And he is,

  485. so even though

  486. John's writing this letter,

  487. he is reporting

  488. revelation from God,

  489. something that God

  490. has revealed to him

  491. in the vision.

  492. This happened

  493. on the Lord's day,

  494. which is Sunday,

  495. the first day of the week,

  496. the day that our Lord Jesus

  497. was raised from the dead.

  498. And that's why

  499. Christians for thousands

  500. of years have worshipped

  501. together on the Lord's day,

  502. on Sunday.

  503. And he says in verses

  504. 10 to 11,

  505. and I heard behind me

  506. a loud voice

  507. like a trumpet saying,

  508. write what you see

  509. in a book

  510. and send it

  511. to the seven churches,

  512. to Ephesus

  513. and to Smyrna

  514. and to Pergamum

  515. and to Thyatira

  516. and Sardis

  517. and to Philadelphia

  518. and to Laodicea.

  519. So this prophetic vision,

  520. he's relaying,

  521. he is serving

  522. as a messenger of this.

  523. And here in verse 11,

  524. we see the seven churches

  525. that are listed.

  526. They are the recipients

  527. of this circular letter.

  528. That's what most people

  529. think Revelation was,

  530. that it was a circular letter

  531. intended to circulate

  532. in multiple locations.

  533. So he would have gone

  534. likely in this order

  535. of the churches

  536. that are listed.

  537. He would have traveled

  538. from one location

  539. to the other

  540. to relay this message

  541. that God had given

  542. to John.

  543. So this is listed

  544. in kind of geographic order

  545. of the path

  546. that a messenger

  547. from Patmos

  548. would have taken.

  549. these,

  550. it's not,

  551. it's not,

  552. we're not told here

  553. why these seven churches

  554. are specified

  555. that we're more

  556. than these seven churches

  557. in Asia Minor.

  558. And there are also

  559. even other prominent churches

  560. in Asia Minor

  561. like Galatia,

  562. the church in Galatia

  563. that Paul wrote to,

  564. the letter to the Galatians.

  565. So then why did John

  566. choose these seven churches?

  567. We don't know for sure,

  568. but it's possible

  569. that these seven churches

  570. formed a natural

  571. focal point of creation

  572. for the churches

  573. scattered throughout

  574. that geographic region.

  575. And remember that also

  576. number seven,

  577. as Ed mentioned last week

  578. and as I said two weeks ago,

  579. is symbolically significant

  580. throughout the book

  581. of Revelation.

  582. Because seven days

  583. is what God took

  584. to create,

  585. to complete all of creation.

  586. It's used symbolically

  587. throughout scripture

  588. and especially

  589. in the book of Revelation

  590. to represent completeness.

  591. So while these seven churches

  592. are specifically named

  593. and God does address

  594. the specific circumstances

  595. of these churches,

  596. they are also representative

  597. of the whole church,

  598. all of God's people.

  599. So the situation

  600. that this Revelation addresses

  601. is a persecuted church

  602. in the midst of tribulation

  603. that must patiently endure

  604. and that's what John

  605. is writing to.

  606. That's the circumstance.

  607. And now having seen

  608. our situation

  609. as described

  610. in verses 9 to 11,

  611. let's look at our Lord.

  612. His description

  613. in verses 12 to 16.

  614. After hearing the loud voice

  615. like a trumpet,

  616. John turns to see

  617. where the voice

  618. is coming from

  619. and he sees,

  620. it says,

  621. on turning,

  622. seven golden lampstands.

  623. And in the midst

  624. of the lampstands,

  625. one like a son of man,

  626. clothed with a long robe

  627. and with a golden sash

  628. around his chest.

  629. For those of you

  630. who are with us

  631. through our sermon series

  632. recently in the book

  633. of Exodus,

  634. this should immediately

  635. make the light bulbs

  636. go off.

  637. Seeing some light bulbs

  638. go off here.

  639. Because a golden lampstand

  640. with seven lamps,

  641. no less,

  642. right,

  643. was one of the furnishings

  644. within the tabernacle

  645. of God.

  646. The golden lampstand

  647. occupied a holy place,

  648. the dwelling place of God,

  649. along with the bread

  650. of the presence

  651. and it represented

  652. the presence of God,

  653. God's gracious presence

  654. among his people.

  655. Light and fire

  656. are really appropriate

  657. symbols for God

  658. and used throughout Scripture

  659. because God is described

  660. as the consuming fire.

  661. Like fire,

  662. the Lord God sanctifies.

  663. He burns up the dross,

  664. leaving the precious ore.

  665. He purifies.

  666. He consumes the wicked

  667. in judgment,

  668. but he purifies his people.

  669. 1 John 1, 5 says

  670. that God is light

  671. and in him

  672. is no darkness at all.

  673. The light,

  674. the seven lights

  675. that are on the lampstand

  676. represent the fullness

  677. of God's holy presence

  678. and is connected

  679. to the seven spirits

  680. that we saw earlier

  681. mentioned in Revelation 1, 4.

  682. That doesn't mean

  683. that there are

  684. seven spirits of God.

  685. Rather,

  686. it represents

  687. the completeness

  688. of the one spirit of God

  689. as Ed was talking about

  690. last week.

  691. There's no blood

  692. or imperfection

  693. or darkness

  694. in God at all

  695. because he is the light,

  696. the consuming fire.

  697. And the golden lampstand

  698. also signifies the fact

  699. that God sees.

  700. Just as the physical light

  701. enables our eyes to see,

  702. it's the spiritual light,

  703. the light of God

  704. that enables us

  705. to see spiritual realities.

  706. The golden lampstand

  707. of the tabernacle

  708. was designed

  709. to look like an almond tree

  710. and we know

  711. from Jeremiah 1, 11 to 12

  712. that an almond tree

  713. is a symbol

  714. of the Lord's watching

  715. because the word watching

  716. is very similar

  717. which is the word almond

  718. in Hebrew.

  719. And so then

  720. the seven lamps

  721. of this almond tree,

  722. right,

  723. of the lamp

  724. convey unmistakably

  725. that the Lord

  726. is watching.

  727. There's nothing hidden

  728. from God.

  729. The deepest recesses

  730. of our hearts

  731. are open to God.

  732. The hidden sins

  733. of sinners

  734. are exposed

  735. before God.

  736. God sees everything.

  737. The Israelites

  738. were to bring

  739. pure,

  740. beaten olive oil

  741. regularly

  742. to make sure

  743. that the light

  744. never goes out

  745. and it was the job

  746. of the Aaron

  747. and his sons,

  748. the priests,

  749. to keep the light

  750. going,

  751. the lamp burning

  752. at all times.

  753. It was never

  754. to go out

  755. because it represented

  756. God's presence

  757. with his people

  758. and God never

  759. goes on vacation.

  760. He never leaves,

  761. right?

  762. When you walk around

  763. East Cambridge

  764. at night

  765. and then you see

  766. light inside the houses,

  767. that's how you know

  768. there is someone home.

  769. Someone is there

  770. and you look

  771. to the tabernacle,

  772. the Israelites

  773. look to the tabernacle

  774. and see the light

  775. of God burning

  776. the lampstand.

  777. They say,

  778. God is here.

  779. He's with us.

  780. He goes with us.

  781. We're told plainly

  782. in verse 20

  783. that the seven golden

  784. lampstands stand

  785. for the seven churches

  786. and the light

  787. and fire

  788. that lampstands

  789. are meant to hold

  790. represent the watchful

  791. presence of God,

  792. his spirit.

  793. This is confirmed

  794. by Zechariah 4,

  795. which this passage

  796. is also alluding to.

  797. There an angel

  798. shows Zechariah

  799. a vision

  800. of a golden lampstand

  801. and this one's

  802. like a super lampstand.

  803. It's got seven lamps

  804. and each of the lamp

  805. has seven lips

  806. or spouts.

  807. So it's like

  808. a seven times seven.

  809. This is like

  810. a super menorah.

  811. And in that vision,

  812. he sees two olive trees

  813. by it on either side,

  814. which supplies the oil

  815. to this lampstand.

  816. And then when asked

  817. to explain the meaning

  818. of this,

  819. the angel says

  820. to Zechariah,

  821. not by might

  822. nor by power,

  823. but by my spirit

  824. says the Lord,

  825. meaning that it represents

  826. the spirit of God,

  827. the presence of God

  828. among his people,

  829. the lampstands,

  830. the light of God.

  831. And it says

  832. specifically

  833. in Zechariah 4.10

  834. that these seven,

  835. the seven lights

  836. on the lampstand

  837. are the eyes

  838. of the Lord

  839. which range

  840. through the whole earth.

  841. So once again,

  842. it represents

  843. the same thing,

  844. the watchful presence

  845. of the living God,

  846. the spirit of God,

  847. the God who gives light

  848. and life

  849. to his people,

  850. the lampstands.

  851. And this is a fulfillment

  852. of the Zechariah's prophecy,

  853. of Zechariah's prophecy

  854. because in the Old Testament

  855. times in Zechariah,

  856. the lampstand represented

  857. Israel, God's people,

  858. the Jews.

  859. But now in the New Testament,

  860. in the New Covenant,

  861. the lampstand represents

  862. all of God's people.

  863. Hence the seven lampstands

  864. represent the fullness

  865. that includes not only the Jews

  866. but also the Gentiles.

  867. And also in Zechariah 4,

  868. there were the two olive trees

  869. that supplies the oil.

  870. And most people interpret that

  871. to mean to stand for Joshua,

  872. the high priest,

  873. and Zerubbabel,

  874. the governor,

  875. who is from the royal line of David,

  876. basically a king.

  877. And those two were at the time

  878. leading Israel

  879. and helping to lay again

  880. the foundation of Jerusalem

  881. and the temple

  882. that were destroyed.

  883. And so they're supplying the oil.

  884. But instead of having two people

  885. tending to the lampstand,

  886. in John's vision,

  887. there's only one.

  888. One like a son of man.

  889. Clothed with a long robe

  890. and with a golden sash

  891. around his chest.

  892. This is a vision of Jesus

  893. because Jesus in himself

  894. combines both of those offices

  895. as high priest and king.

  896. And that's why it says

  897. he's clothed with a long robe

  898. and with a golden sash.

  899. The Greek word that's translated here

  900. as long robe

  901. only occurs once

  902. right here in the New Testament.

  903. But if you search

  904. the Greek translation

  905. of the Old Testament,

  906. it occurs five times

  907. in the book of Exodus alone.

  908. And every single time

  909. it refers to the robe

  910. of the ifid

  911. that the priest wears.

  912. So it's a priestly robe.

  913. And the golden sash

  914. is a symbol of royalty

  915. and represents Jesus'

  916. kingly office.

  917. And as many of you

  918. already know,

  919. the phrase son of man

  920. is Jesus' favorite phrase,

  921. the favorite title

  922. that Jesus takes upon himself

  923. throughout the Gospels

  924. because it's an explicit allusion

  925. to Daniel 7 and Daniel 10

  926. where one like a son of man

  927. approaches the engine of days

  928. and receives everlasting dominion

  929. and glory and kingdom

  930. so that all peoples and nations

  931. and languages worship him

  932. and serve him.

  933. It's a description

  934. of the messianic king

  935. who has God's authority,

  936. divine, eternal authority.

  937. And that's who Jesus is.

  938. He's better.

  939. He fulfills Zerubbabel

  940. and Joshua the high priest.

  941. He is the great high priest

  942. and he is the ultimate king

  943. in the line of David.

  944. And so he fulfills this prophecy

  945. in Zechariah 4

  946. and he is the one

  947. who is now tending

  948. to God's people,

  949. the lamp of God,

  950. to make sure that the lamp

  951. does not go out,

  952. that it continues to burn.

  953. This picture of the seven

  954. golden lampstands

  955. with the son of man

  956. behind it,

  957. in the midst of it,

  958. teaches us several

  959. important things.

  960. First, it teaches that we,

  961. the church of God,

  962. we're the lampstands.

  963. But God,

  964. the spirit of God,

  965. is the light

  966. or the fire.

  967. Jesus is the light

  968. of the world

  969. and it says in verse 16,

  970. his face is like the sun

  971. shining in full strength.

  972. We as the church,

  973. God's people,

  974. are merely the receptacles

  975. of the light.

  976. We are not the light itself.

  977. We are only the light

  978. of the world

  979. insofar as we are reflecting

  980. the light of Christ.

  981. So then we should be careful

  982. not to make ourselves

  983. the center of attention

  984. or center of our ministry,

  985. of everything that we do,

  986. our lives.

  987. It's not about

  988. who has the platform

  989. or who gets to talk

  990. in front of a crowd.

  991. It's not about

  992. who gets the credit

  993. or who gets the acclaim

  994. because it's not about us.

  995. We exist to glorify God,

  996. not ourselves.

  997. We exist to make much of God,

  998. not ourselves.

  999. We exist to tell people

  1000. about God

  1001. and not about ourselves.

1002. The church of all places

1003. should not be a place

  1004. where people are jostling

  1005. for the spotlight.

  1006. Rather,

  1007. we shine the spotlight

  1008. on Christ

1009. because He is the light.

1010. He is the consuming fire.

1011. We're not the main show.

  1012. We're just the setting

1013. for the light of God.

  1014. And secondly,

  1015. Jesus,

  1016. it tells us,

  1017. this picture tells us

1018. that Jesus is with us

1019. and that He is watching over us.

1020. This glorious and risen Lord

1021. that we're going to see

  1022. in a second,

1023. even as He sits and reigns

1024. at the right hand of the Father,

1025. His church and His people

1026. are not out of sight

  1027. and out of mind.

1028. In the midst of the lampstands,

  1029. He says,

1030. there's one like a Son of Man.

1031. Jesus is not far off.

1032. He's in our very midst

1033. as our high priest and king.

  1034. And He's carefully

  1035. and diligently

  1036. tending to the lamp

1037. so that the fire of God,

  1038. the Spirit of God

  1039. does not go out

  1040. in that lamp.

  1041. And as I mentioned,

1042. this applies to all the churches.

  1043. The seven churches

  1044. are representative

  1045. and that means

1046. it applies to us too.

  1047. This small,

  1048. humble,

  1049. lowly church

  1050. in Cambridge, Massachusetts,

  1051. the Son of God

1052. and the Son of Man

  1053. who has all authority

1054. in heaven and on earth

  1055. is in our midst.

1056. And He is tending to us

  1057. and caring for us

  1058. to make sure

1059. that that light of God

  1060. does not go out.

  1061. That's an amazing promise.

  1062. So remember this,

  1063. brothers and sisters,

1064. as you mortify your sins,

  1065. as you battle against

  1066. the evil one,

  1067. as you endure

  1068. through persecution,

  1069. this is the grounds

  1070. for our patient endurance

  1071. through the tribulation.

1072. And this is what undergirds

  1073. John's message

  1074. or Jesus' message

  1075. to the seven churches

  1076. in chapters 2 and 3,

  1077. telling Him to conquer,

  1078. telling Him to endure,

1079. telling Him to be faithful

  1080. unto death.

1081. How can they do that?

1082. Because Jesus is among us.

  1083. And He says,

  1084. you are not alone.

  1085. I am with you.

  1086. So stand firm.

  1087. Persevere till the end.

  1088. And our strength

1089. and hope grow so much

  1090. as we see

  1091. the further descriptions

  1092. of Jesus.

  1093. I love this description

  1094. of Jesus

  1095. in these few verses.

  1096. Verse 14 tells us

  1097. that the hairs

  1098. of His head

  1099. were white,

  1100. like white wool,

  1101. like snow.

1102. White hair is a sign of what?

  1103. Age, old age, right?

  1104. In our culture,

1105. old age is not looked at

  1106. as a good thing,

  1107. but in many cultures,

  1108. actually,

  1109. it's looked at

1110. as a very good thing

  1111. because it signifies wisdom.

1112. Gray hair is not something

  1113. to be ashamed of

  1114. because it signifies

  1115. long life.

  1116. And you can testify

  1117. to the faithfulness

  1118. of God.

  1119. And through that experience,

  1120. you gain wisdom.

  1121. Daniel 7, 9,

  1122. this is an allusion

  1123. to Daniel 7, 9,

  1124. which describes God Almighty,

  1125. the Ancient of Days.

1126. It says that His clothing

  1127. was white as snow

1128. and the hair of His head

  1129. like pure wool,

  1130. just like here

  1131. with Jesus.

1132. John's trying to tell us

  1133. that Jesus is

  1134. the Ancient of Days.

  1135. He's the second person

  1136. of the Trinity.

  1137. He is the word

  1138. that was there

  1139. from the beginning.

  1140. He is wise.

  1141. This reminds me

  1142. of Gandalf

1143. from The Lord of the Rings.

  1144. Gandalf is ancient.

  1145. According to Tolkien Geeks

  1146. geeking out on Reddit,

  1147. Gandalf is about

  1148. 55,000 years old

1149. by the end of the series,

1150. the book of The Lord of the Rings.

  1151. And so he's ancient

  1152. and he's equally wise.

  1153. He's as ancient

  1154. as he's wise.

  1155. And he fights,

  1156. right,

  1157. as you guys know,

1158. I think it's in the two towers.

  1159. He fights against

  1160. Balrog of Morgoth

1161. and he gives his life

  1162. to save his friends.

1163. And then after he dies,

  1164. he's given life again.

  1165. He resurrects.

1166. And then when he's raised,

  1167. he's no longer

  1168. Gandalf the Grey,

1169. but he is Gandalf the White

  1170. with greater power,

  1171. greater wisdom,

  1172. and greater authority.

1173. And he's supposed to go

  1174. and supplant

  1175. the corrupted leader

  1176. of the White Council,

1177. the head of the Order

  1178. of the Wizards,

  1179. Saruman,

  1180. because Gandalf

  1181. has surpassed him.

1182. He's now Gandalf the White.

  1183. I love Gandalf

  1184. all throughout the series.

  1185. There's an amazing,

  1186. amazing scene

  1187. in the two towers

  1188. when during the Battle

  1189. of the Helm's Deep

  1190. and they're losing.

  1191. And I'm sorry

  1192. if this is like,

1193. you gotta read the books

1194. if you haven't read it.

  1195. And they're losing

1196. and then as the sun rises,

  1197. Gandalf appears

  1198. on the horizon,

  1199. a white rider,

  1200. they call him.

  1201. And they said,

1202. there suddenly upon a ridge

  1203. appeared a rider

  1204. clad in white,

1205. shining in the rising sun.

  1206. Behold,

  1207. a white rider,

  1208. cried Aragorn.

  1209. Gandalf is come again.

  1210. Can you imagine that?

1211. And then the tide turns.

  1212. Can you just imagine

  1213. being in that battle?

  1214. You're losing.

  1215. You're losing hope

1216. and then you see that.

  1217. Like what strength

1218. that brings to your heart

  1219. and what hope

  1220. that breathes

  1221. into your heart

  1222. and you see someone

  1223. so wise,

  1224. so ancient,

  1225. who's seen it all

1226. and done it all come.

  1227. If that's the case

  1228. with Gandalf,

  1229. how much more

  1230. to have Jesus

  1231. on our side?

  1232. the Ancient of Days

  1233. himself

  1234. who's there

  1235. before the beginning

  1236. of time,

  1237. who knows all things.

  1238. You just behold him

1239. and you see his wisdom.

  1240. He knows and sees

  1241. all things.

  1242. Amazing.

  1243. Verses 14 to 15

  1244. also tells us

  1245. that his eyes

  1246. were like a flame

  1247. of fire.

  1248. His feet

  1249. were like burnished bronze

  1250. refined in a furnace

  1251. and his voice

  1252. was like the roar

  1253. of many waters.

  1254. This is an allusion

  1255. to Daniel's vision

1256. of the Son of Man

  1257. in Daniel 10 verse 6.

    Daniel 10:6

1258. His body was like barrel,

1259. his face like the appearance

  1260. of lightning,

  1261. his eyes were like

  1262. flaming torches,

  1263. his arms and legs

  1264. like the gleam

  1265. of burnished bronze

  1266. and the sound

  1267. of his words

  1268. like the sound

  1269. of a multitude.

  1270. What does it mean

  1271. that his eyes

  1272. were like a flame

  1273. of fire?

  1274. Fire is often

  1275. a symbol of judgment

  1276. and discernment.

  1277. It separates

  1278. the drowse

  1279. from the oars.

  1280. Proverbs 28

  1281. says this,

  1282. a king who sits

  1283. on the throne

  1284. of judgment

  1285. winnows all evil

  1286. with his eyes.

  1287. I think that gets

  1288. close to the intended

  1289. meaning of this

  1290. description.

  1291. Jesus is a righteous

  1292. judge,

  1293. an omniscient judge

  1294. who perceives

  1295. and sees

  1296. all things.

  1297. Nobody can put

  1298. one over him

  1299. and nothing can

  1300. get past

  1301. his all discerning eyes.

  1302. He sees everything.

  1303. There's no ambush

  1304. and no trick

  1305. that an enemy

  1306. can play

  1307. that can overcome him.

  1308. There's no sinner

  1309. who can hide

  1310. from his all-knowing

  1311. perception.

  1312. He sees right

  1313. through people

  1314. who are clean

  1315. on the outside

  1316. but impure

  1317. on the inside.

  1318. That's Jesus.

  1319. His feet were

  1320. like burnished bronze

  1321. refined in a furnace

1322. it says in verse 15.

  1323. So refined

  1324. polished bronze

  1325. is glossy

  1326. and it gleams,

  1327. it shines.

  1328. so that symbolizes

  1329. Jesus' purity

  1330. but also

  1331. it shows

  1332. Jesus' power

  1333. and authority

  1334. because bronze

  1335. is the hardest

  1336. of the precious metals

  1337. that were commonly

1338. used in the ancient world.

  1339. Gold, silver, and bronze.

  1340. Bronze is the hardest

  1341. of them all.

  1342. With feet

  1343. like burnished bronze

  1344. Jesus crushes

  1345. his foes

  1346. underneath his feet.

  1347. No enemy

  1348. can resist him.

  1349. it just crumbles

  1350. underneath.

  1351. He's the victorious

  1352. conqueror.

  1353. And his voice

  1354. was like the roar

  1355. of many waters.

  1356. It's amazing.

  1357. Try imagining that.

  1358. This is an allusion

  1359. to Ezekiel 43.2

  1360. which describes

  1361. the sound

  1362. of the coming

  1363. of the Lord

  1364. like the sound

  1365. of many waters.

  1366. Ezekiel 1.24

  1367. tells us

  1368. what the sound

  1369. of many waters

  1370. is like.

  1371. It tells us

  1372. that I heard

  1373. the sound

  1374. of their wings

  1375. like the sound

  1376. of many waters

  1377. like the sound

  1378. of the Almighty

  1379. a sound

  1380. of tumult

  1381. like the sound

  1382. of an army.

  1383. So imagine

  1384. the sound

  1385. of a mighty host

  1386. tens of thousands

  1387. hundreds of thousands

  1388. in the army

  1389. marching together

  1390. the rumbling

  1391. the roar

  1392. listen to that sound

  1393. of his voice.

  1394. So imagine

  1395. like the lush

  1396. and full surround sound

  1397. of the ocean waves

1398. when you're at the beach.

  1399. or imagine

  1400. the roaring flow

  1401. of a large waterfall

  1402. like the Niagara Falls.

  1403. I think the closest

  1404. human voice

  1405. comes to that

  1406. is probably

  1407. the voice

  1408. of Tim Storms.

  1409. You guys know

  1410. about him?

  1411. I didn't know

  1412. about him

  1413. until this weekend.

  1414. He holds

  1415. the Guinness

  1416. world record

  1417. for both

  1418. the lowest note

  1419. ever produced

  1420. by a human being

  1421. and the widest

  1422. vocal range.

1423. He has a vocal range

  1424. of ten octaves

  1425. to give you

  1426. a glimpse

  1427. of that.

  1428. Mariah Carey

  1429. sings five octaves.

  1430. That's crazy.

  1431. And normal human beings

  1432. like you and me

  1433. only sing two

  1434. or three octaves.

  1435. They say that

1436. and this is like real

  1437. they measure it

  1438. with scientific equipment.

  1439. His lowest note

  1440. is so low

  1441. that human beings

  1442. can't hear it.

  1443. Only elephants

  1444. can hear it.

  1445. Isn't that crazy?

  1446. I'm not

  1447. and he's actually

  1448. a Christian

  1449. and you can find

  1450. YouTube videos

  1451. of him singing

  1452. some hymns

  1453. and it's remarkable.

  1454. And you can look

  1455. that up later

  1456. and not now.

  1457. And he literally

  1458. sounds like a full

  1459. bass choir section

  1460. all by himself.

  1461. And you're like

  1462. listening to this

  1463. and if you have

  1464. good headphones

  1465. you could feel

  1466. the vibration

  1467. like an earthquake

  1468. like the rumbling

  1469. loud sound.

  1470. And that's only

  1471. the voice

  1472. of one human being.

  1473. Can you imagine

  1474. the sound

  1475. of the almighty?

  1476. How powerful

  1477. is the Lord God?

  1478. Imagine that sound.

  1479. The immensity

  1480. of it.

  1481. The authority

  1482. of it.

  1483. Jesus is not

  1484. a puny deity.

  1485. He's infinite

  1486. and almighty.

  1487. Verse 16

  1488. tells us

1489. that in his right hand

  1490. he held

  1491. the seven stars.

  1492. In case you're

  1493. wondering what

  1494. the seven stars are

  1495. John tells us

  1496. exactly in verse 20

  1497. as for the mystery

  1498. of the seven stars

  1499. that you saw

  1500. in my right hand

  1501. and the seven

  1502. golden lampstands.

  1503. The seven stars

  1504. are the angels

  1505. of the seven churches

  1506. and the seven lampstands

  1507. are the seven churches.

  1508. In chapters 2 and 3

  1509. Jesus addresses

  1510. the seven churches

  1511. and he addresses

  1512. the seven churches

  1513. by addressing

  1514. the angels

  1515. of the seven churches

  1516. which shows

  1517. that these angels

  1518. are heavenly

  1519. representatives

  1520. of the churches

  1521. that are on earth.

  1522. Some people think

  1523. that these angels

  1524. refer to human

  1525. representatives

  1526. maybe the lead

  1527. pastors of these churches

  1528. because the word

  1529. angel simply means

  1530. messenger

  1531. in the Greek.

  1532. However,

  1533. in Revelation

  1534. the word angel

  1535. in all the subsequent

  1536. visions

  1537. exclusively refers

  1538. to a heavenly being

  1539. an actual angel

1540. as we think of it.

  1541. So I think

  1542. it's highly unlikely

  1543. that this is referring

  1544. to a human messenger

  1545. and this idea

  1546. that there is

  1547. a heavenly angelic

  1548. representative of people

  1549. is not uncommon

  1550. throughout scripture.

  1551. In Matthew 18.10

  1552. Jesus says

  1553. of the children

1554. see that you do not

  1555. despise one of these

  1556. little ones

  1557. for I tell you

  1558. that in heaven

  1559. their angels

  1560. always see the face

  1561. of my father

  1562. who is in heaven.

  1563. These children

  1564. are precious

  1565. disciples of Christ

  1566. are precious

  1567. why?

  1568. Because they have

  1569. heavenly representatives

  1570. angels

  1571. before the presence

  1572. of God.

  1573. we see a similar

  1574. thing in Daniel 10

  1575. 20-21

  1576. and Daniel 12

    Daniel 12:1

  1577. verse 1

  1578. they speak of

  1579. the nations

  1580. throughout the world

  1581. also having

  1582. angelic representatives

  1583. assigned to them.

  1584. So then these angels

  1585. are heavenly beings

  1586. that represent

  1587. before God's throne

1588. the church is on earth.

  1589. This is an amazing

  1590. statement

  1591. about the significance

  1592. of the church.

  1593. Here on earth

  1594. the visible church

  1595. is imperfect.

  1596. there's wheat

  1597. and there's weeds

  1598. mixed in together

  1599. but however imperfect

  1600. we may be

  1601. the church

  1602. is a heavenly reality.

  1603. And even

  1604. our small

  1605. local church

  1606. has an angel

  1607. representing us

  1608. before the very

  1609. throne of God.

  1610. This is why

  1611. the book of Revelation

  1612. is punctuated

  1613. by visions

  1614. of heavenly worship

1615. of the Lamb of God

  1616. because they are

  1617. a heavenly counterpart

  1618. to what we are

  1619. doing here on earth.

  1620. This is why

  1621. the corporate worship

  1622. of the church

  1623. is so important.

  1624. What we do here

  1625. together

  1626. is not just

  1627. for here and now.

  1628. It rings out

  1629. through eternity.

  1630. It rings out

  1631. in heaven.

1632. And in his right hand

  1633. it says Jesus

  1634. holds the seven stars.

  1635. Not only is Jesus

1636. Lord over the seven churches

  1637. represented by the

  1638. seven lampstands

  1639. he is also Lord

  1640. over our heavenly

  1641. angelic counterparts.

1642. He holds the seven stars

  1643. in his hand.

  1644. When you hold

  1645. something in your hand

  1646. when something is

  1647. in your hand

  1648. it shows your power

  1649. over it.

  1650. Your authority over it.

  1651. So it shows

  1652. Jesus' sovereignty

  1653. over human history

  1654. and over all

  1655. of God's people.

1656. We are in the hands

  1657. of the resurrected

  1658. Lord Jesus

  1659. and let this

1660. be a comfort to you

1661. that he is in full

  1662. control of your faith.

  1663. No matter what

  1664. disappointments

  1665. and setbacks

  1666. have happened

1667. to you in your life

  1668. no matter how much

  1669. suffering you are

  1670. enduring right now

  1671. no matter how much

  1672. you despair

  1673. of even life itself

1674. you are in the hands

  1675. of the resurrected

  1676. Lord Jesus.

  1677. And as Jesus said

  1678. in John 10

  1679. 27 to 28

1680. my sheep hear my voice

  1681. and I know them

  1682. and they follow me

1683. I give them eternal life

1684. and they will never perish

  1685. and no one

  1686. will ever

  1687. snatch them

  1688. out of my hand.

  1689. That's what that

  1690. represents.

  1691. No one can ever

  1692. snatch you out of

  1693. the hand of the

  1694. sovereign Lord Jesus

1695. who holds the seven stars

  1696. in his right hand.

  1697. Verse 16 continues

  1698. to describe this glorious

  1699. Christ.

  1700. From his mouth

  1701. came a sharp

  1702. two-edged sword.

  1703. This is an allusion

  1704. to Isaiah 11 4.

1705. The rod from his mouth

  1706. he judges the wicked.

  1707. Ephesians 6 17

  1708. speaks of the word

  1709. of God

  1710. as the sword

  1711. of the spirit.

  1712. And Hebrews 4 12

  1713. famously says this

  1714. the word of God

  1715. is living and active

  1716. sharper than any

  1717. two-edged sword

  1718. piercing to the

  1719. division of soul

  1720. and of spirit

  1721. of joints

  1722. and of narrow

  1723. and discerning the

  1724. thoughts and intentions

  1725. of the heart.

  1726. Jesus' weapon

  1727. is the two-edged sword

1728. of the word of God.

  1729. Scriptures.

  1730. It is not sharp

  1731. in the sense

  1732. that it cuts people

  1733. down

  1734. or brings them down

  1735. rather it's sharp

  1736. in the sense

  1737. that it cuts

  1738. to the heart.

  1739. It's not merely

  1740. an earthly weapon

  1741. that can cut

  1742. flesh and blood.

  1743. It's a spiritual weapon

1744. that can cut the soul

  1745. and the spirit.

  1746. That can

  1747. cut through the weeds

  1748. and discern

  1749. the thoughts and intentions

  1750. of the heart.

  1751. It's a sword

  1752. that can slay

  1753. spiritual enemies

  1754. that can slay

  1755. the devil.

  1756. It's a sword

  1757. that can cut open

  1758. sin and expose it.

  1759. It's a sword

  1760. with which Jesus

  1761. will strike down

  1762. the nations

  1763. who oppose him

  1764. as it says

  1765. in Revelation 19 15.

  1766. And lastly

  1767. verse 16

  1768. describes Jesus' face.

  1769. His face

  1770. was like the sun

  1771. shining

  1772. in full strength.

  1773. this reveals

  1774. that Jesus

  1775. is the radiance

  1776. of the glory

  1777. of God.

  1778. Jesus is the only

  1779. sovereign king

  1780. of kings

  1781. and lord of lords

  1782. who alone

  1783. has immortality

  1784. and who dwells

  1785. in unapproachable light.

  1786. Jesus revealed

  1787. this divine glory

  1788. briefly at the

  1789. transfiguration

  1790. in Matthew 17 2

  1791. and it described

  1792. his transfiguration

  1793. this way.

  1794. His face

  1795. shone like the sun.

  1796. We can't even

  1797. stare at him

  1798. directly.

  1799. That's how

  1800. gloriously bright

  1801. he is.

  1802. Pure,

  1803. holy.

  1804. This is the

  1805. cosmic

  1806. picture

  1807. of the risen

  1808. Jesus.

  1809. Isn't it amazing?

  1810. I think it's such

  1811. a beautiful description.

  1812. And it's that

  1813. glorious picture

  1814. that provides

  1815. the basis

  1816. for the main

  1817. command of this

  1818. passage

  1819. in verses 17

  1820. 18.

  1821. When I saw

  1822. him,

  1823. I fell at

  1824. his feet

  1825. as though

  1826. dead.

  1827. But he laid

  1828. his right hand

  1829. on me saying,

  1830. fear not.

  1831. I am the

  1832. first and

  1833. the last

  1834. and the living

  1835. one.

  1836. I died

  1837. and behold,

  1838. I am alive

  1839. forevermore.

  1840. And I have

  1841. the keys

  1842. of death

  1843. and Hades.

  1844. So this

  1845. should be

  1846. our response.

  1847. Fear not.

  1848. This is once

  1849. again an allusion

  1850. to Daniel 10.

  1851. After Daniel

  1852. sees the vision

  1853. of the son

  1854. of man,

  1855. he loses

  1856. all strength

  1857. and he falls

  1858. into a deep

  1859. sleep.

  1860. And Jesus,

  1861. son of man,

  1862. has to touch

  1863. him,

  1864. his right hand,

  1865. and strengthen

  1866. him and to

  1867. get him up.

  1868. And he tells

  1869. him,

  1870. fear not,

  1871. peace be with

  1872. you,

  1873. be strong

  1874. and of good

  1875. courage.

  1876. But why

  1877. is Jesus

  1878. telling John

  1879. to fear not?

  1880. To fear not

  1881. what?

  1882. I don't think

  1883. Jesus is primarily

  1884. referring to

  1885. fearing him.

  1886. And I think

  1887. we can tell

  1888. that from

  1889. the context

  1890. because Jesus

  1891. goes on to

  1892. say,

  1893. I am the

  1894. first and

  1895. the last

  1896. and the

  1897. living

  1898. one.

  1899. I died

  1900. and behold

  1901. I am alive

  1902. forevermore

  1903. and I have

  1904. the keys

  1905. of death

  1906. and Hades.

  1907. If John

  1908. was afraid

  1909. of Jesus

  1910. and he was

  1911. trying to

  1912. reassure him,

  1913. I don't think

  1914. I would tell

  1915. him this

  1916. because I think

  1917. this makes

  1918. him more

  1919. scary.

  1920. But the

  1921. threefold

  1922. formula,

  1923. I am the

  1924. first and

  1925. the last

  1926. and the

  1927. living one

  1928. mirrors

  1929. verses 4

  1930. and 8,

  1931. him who

  1932. is and

  1933. who was

  1934. and who

  1935. is to

  1936. come.

  1937. Or I

  1938. am the

  1939. alpha and

  1940. omega,

  1941. the beginning

  1942. and the end,

  1943. who is and

  1944. who was and

  1945. is to

  1946. come,

  1947. the almighty.

  1948. Jesus is

  1949. here unmistakably

  1950. identifying himself

  1951. with the

  1952. ancient of

  1953. days,

  1954. the living

  1955. God,

  1956. eternal God

  1957. who has no

  1958. beginning and

  1959. no end.

  1960. Jesus rules

  1961. over the past,

  1962. the present,

  1963. and the future

  1964. and John's

  1965. supposed to write

  1966. of this reign

  1967. of Christ

  1968. and that's why

  1969. the commission

  1970. in verse 19

  1971. also is threefold.

  1972. Write there

  1973. for things that

  1974. you have seen,

  1975. those that are

  1976. and those that

  1977. are to take

  1978. place after this.

  1979. So John's a

  1980. witness to Christ's

  1981. reign in the

  1982. past, present,

  1983. and future.

  1984. And it's on

  1985. that basis,

  1986. Jesus seems

  1987. like,

  1988. Jesus is telling

  1989. us not to

  1990. fear because

  1991. he has risen

  1992. from the dead

  1993. and he has

  1994. the keys

  1995. to death

  1996. and Hades.

  1997. Jesus is saying

  1998. this because

  1999. he knows

  2000. the situation

  2001. that John

  2002. and the churches

  2003. are in.

  2004. They're facing

  2005. tribulation,

  2006. they're facing

  2007. persecution,

  2008. they need to

  2009. patiently endure,

  2010. they have many

  2011. good reasons

  2012. to be afraid

  2013. for being

  2014. a Christian.

  2015. And that's

  2016. why Jesus

  2017. is saying

  2018. fear not

  2019. because I

  2020. have defeated

  2021. death,

  2022. I am risen

  2023. from the dead

  2024. and I have

  2025. the keys

  2026. to death

  2027. and Hades.

  2028. This is

  2029. Jesus' way

  2030. of saying

  2031. what he said

  2032. earlier in

  2033. his earthly life,

  2034. Matthew 10,

  2035. 28,

  2036. do not fear

  2037. those who

  2038. can kill

  2039. the body

  2040. but cannot

  2041. kill the soul.

  2042. Rather fear

  2043. him who

  2044. can destroy

  2045. both soul

  2046. and body

  2047. in hell.

  2048. Jesus is

  2049. saying I've

  2050. got the keys

  2051. to death

  2052. so don't

  2053. fear death.

  2054. Don't fear

  2055. what man

  2056. can do

  2057. to you.

  2058. Think about

  2059. it this way,

  2060. you don't get

  2061. the keys

  2062. to the house

  2063. until you

  2064. actually pay

  2065. for it

  2066. and you

  2067. close it.

  2068. You close

  2069. on the house.

  2070. They won't

  2071. give you the keys

  2072. until you

  2073. own it.

  2074. Before

  2075. you get

  2076. the key

  2077. you have

  2078. to be

  2079. courteous

  2080. to the

  2081. current

  2082. residents

  2083. in the

  2084. house,

  2085. you have

  2086. to observe

  2087. their

  2088. curfee,

  2089. you visit

  2090. at a

  2091. good

  2092. reasonable

  2093. hour

  2094. and you

  2095. can only

  2096. go with

  2097. permission.

  2098. but once

  2099. you have

  2100. the key,

  2101. you can

  2102. go in

  2103. and out

  2104. as you

  2105. please

  2106. because you

  2107. own it.

  2108. Jesus is

  2109. saying I

  2110. own

  2111. death.

  2112. So why

  2113. are you

  2114. afraid

  2115. of it?

  2116. Why fear

  2117. those who can

  2118. kill the body

  2119. but cannot

  2120. kill the soul?

  2121. Jesus can

  2122. unlock that

  2123. whenever he

  2124. wants.

  2125. We can

  2126. be persecuted

  2127. and we can

  2128. give our

  2129. life for

  2130. Jesus and

  2131. become martyrs

  2132. this day

  2133. and he

  2134. will raise

  2135. us with

  2136. him and

  2137. give us

  2138. eternal

  2139. resurrection

  2140. life when

  2141. he returns.

  2142. So fear

  2143. not.

  2144. I

  2145. mentioned to

  2146. you the

  2147. report from

  2148. Open Door

  2149. USA at

  2150. the beginning

  2151. and the

  2152. report from

  2153. this year

  2154. included a

  2155. testimony from

  2156. Pastor Marcos.

  2157. He was a

  2158. pastor leading

  2159. a church in

  2160. Adamawa state

  2161. in northern

  2162. Nigeria when

  2163. Boko Haram

  2164. attacked.

  2165. Villages were

  2166. ransacked and

  2167. church buildings

  2168. were burned and

  2169. many Christian

  2170. men and

  2171. women were

  2172. killed.

  2173. And he

  2174. says this

  2175. that at the

  2176. time in the

  2177. immediate aftermath

  2178. he says my

  2179. own spiritual

  2180. life was

  2181. greatly shaken

  2182. because I

  2183. was so afraid.

  2184. But still the

  2185. word of God

  2186. kept reminding

  2187. me that for

  2188. anyone who

  2189. puts their

  2190. trust in God

  2191. he will not

  2192. forsake them.

  2193. Initially after

  2194. the violence had

  2195. subsided the

  2196. people of his

  2197. church were

  2198. slow to come

  2199. back because

  2200. they were afraid

  2201. and so but he

  2202. patiently ministered

  2203. to them one by

  2204. one exhorting them

  2205. to renew their

  2206. faith in God and

  2207. eventually they all

  2208. returned and this

  2209. is what Pastor

  2210. Markos had to

  2211. say.

  2212. The persecution

  2213. quote has

  2214. become like a

  2215. fertilizer for the

  2216. gospel.

  2217. Our church had

  2218. only 200 members

  2219. before Boko Haram

  2220. came but now we

  2221. have 300 to 400

  2222. members.

  2223. We do not pray

  2224. that God will take

  2225. away the hardship

  2226. but that God

  2227. should give us the

  2228. grace to be able

  2229. to stand.

  2230. Since our

  2231. master Jesus went

  2232. through this

  2233. suffering we also

  2234. who have become

  2235. his followers will

  2236. go through it.

  2237. but in the end

  2238. we will be

  2239. victorious.

  2240. We need not

  2241. fear in the

  2242. midst of

  2243. tribulation

  2244. because Christ

  2245. is the

  2246. resurrected Lord

  2247. who reigns

  2248. over the

  2249. church.

  2250. Let's pray

  2251. together.

  2252. yes fathers

  2253. it is so

  2254. easy for us

  2255. to just

  2256. only pray

  2257. that you

  2258. remove the

  2259. tribulation.

  2260. You take away

  2261. the suffering

  2262. in our lives.

  2263. But Lord

  2264. you said to

  2265. us that in

  2266. this world

  2267. we will have

  2268. tribulation.

  2269. tribulation

  2270. and we pray

  2271. now in

  2272. accordance with

  2273. this word

  2274. that you'll

  2275. give us the

  2276. strength and

  2277. the courage

  2278. the faith

  2279. to stand

  2280. to stand

  2281. firm

  2282. to endure

  2283. patiently

  2284. to conquer

  2285. by being

  2286. faithful unto

  2287. death

  2288. so that we

  2289. might be

  2290. living pictures

  2291. of you

  2292. our Lord

  2293. Jesus Christ

  2294. who died

  2295. for our

  2296. sins and

  2297. was raised

  2298. from the

  2299. dead and

  2300. now lives

  2301. forevermore.

  2302. Our trust

  2303. is in you

  2304. Lord.

  2305. And in

  2306. your holy

  2307. name we

  2308. pray.

  2309. Amen.
