  1. Bibles if you would

  2. to the book of Matthew this morning.

  3. We've been doing a series

  4. on the important subjects

  5. the word of God. We've been looking at

  6. the Godhead.

  7. God the Father, God the Son, God the

  8. Holy Spirit.

  9. And

  10. this morning we're going to continue to

  11. look at

  12. God the Son.

  13. and

  14. and his two

  15. baptisms.

  16. So, the son of God, Jesus had two

  17. baptisms that he

  18. uh shared with us. And as we can see in

  19. scripture

  20. and we're going to start out in Matthew

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  21. chapter 3

  22. and then this is

  23. as well. We're going to see a lot of

  24. John the Baptist here as we look at

  25. this. Obviously, he's the baptizer

  26. and the one that the Old Testament

  27. predicted.

  28. But we have two baptisms of Jesus. And

  29. we're going to look at the first one

  30. here.

  31. It is was his water baptism.

  32. And we're going to look at his other one

  33. as well. And then we're going to come

  34. back and look at this first one, the the

  35. one on water.

  36. So, we want to look at everything the

  37. scripture has to say about this, not

  38. just limit ourselves to to one verse or

  39. even one context

  40. uh on this particular subject.

  41. And you know, this is one that deserves

  42. to study and or deserves our time to

  43. understand and to know why

  44. Jesus was baptized.

  45. If you want to start a church fight

  46. or or a fight at work or in your

  47. neighborhood, just bring this subject up

  48. and it will do it every time.

  49. So, that's not my intent at all.

  50. My intent is to look at what the word of

  51. God says and let's rely on it

  52. and let's stick to what it says

  53. about this particular subject.

  54. And you guys are familiar enough with

  55. this that I don't have to read all this

  56. here in chapter 3. But the subject of

  57. Jesus water baptism is here in chapter

  58. 3. And we are going to come back and

  59. look at

  60. look at this from two perspectives I

  61. guess. Uh one from John's perspective

  62. and the other one from Jesus

  63. perspective.

  64. Uh he's God by the way. The whole

  65. trinity shows up at his baptism.

  66. So we want to hear what John has to say

  67. about this and we want to hear what

  68. Jesus has to say about this water

  69. baptism here. Then cometh Jesus from

  70. Galilee to Jordan unto John to be

  71. baptized by him.

  72. But John forbade him, saying, I have

  73. need to be baptized of thee, and you

  74. come to me.

  75. And Jesus answered and said unto him,

  76. Permit it to be so now, for thus it

  77. becomes us to fulfill all righteousness.

  78. And then he considered to him, "And

  79. Jesus, when he was baptized, went up

  80. straightway out of the water, and lo,

  81. the heavens were opened, and he saw the

  82. spirit of God descending like a dove and

  83. lighting upon him. And lo, a voice from

  84. heaven said, "This is my beloved son in

  85. whom I am well pleased." And this is

  86. Jesus water baptism. Um he's at the

  87. Jordan. uh the water is mentioned and

  88. and you know John is the baptizer and we

  89. have a lot of things here that took

  90. place uh that are so important for us to

  91. understand

  92. uh as to why Jesus was baptized

  93. you know and why John what John says and

  94. then what what the Godhead says here in

  95. verse 16. So this is the first baptism

  96. of Jesus. Now let's look at the second

  97. one. He mentions it in Matthew chap 11.

  98. Matthew chap 11

  99. and verse 11.

  100. And here John, he mentions John, verily

  101. I say unto you, among them that were

  102. born of women, there is none greater

  103. than John the Baptist. And he uh that is

  104. the least

  105. in heaven is greater than he. And from

  106. the days of John until now, the kingdom

  107. of heavens suffices violence, and

  108. violence taketh it by force. So here we

  109. see Jesus mentioning John the Baptist.

  110. And this is when John particularly uh

  111. was concerned about uh Jesus. And you

  112. know, here we have even the prophet

  113. himself saying, "Was I the right

  114. prophet?"

  115. And you see what Jesus answer was. it

  116. might as well been for it is written,

  117. you know, over and over. Uh he mentions

  118. the reasons why. Now, here's a second

  119. one. I'm sorry. If you'll turn to John

  120. chap 20

  121. and verse 20

  122. then you know no other prophet baptized

  123. that I know of

  124. um correct me if I'm wrong on that one

  125. but I think John was the only one

  126. and for specific reasons.

  127. And here Jesus mentions his second

  128. baptism

  129. in John, I'm sorry, in Matthew chapter

    Matthew 20 chapter mention

  130. 20 and verse 20.

  131. Then cometh he to uh the mother of

  132. Zebedee's children and her sons

  133. worshiping him, desiring a certain thing

  134. of him. And he said unto her, "What will

  135. you do?" And she said unto him, "Grant

  136. these that my two sons may set the one

  137. on the right hand and the other on the

  138. left in your kingdom." And Jesus says,

  139. 'You don't know what you're asking.' And

  140. here's where he brings up his his second

  141. baptism. You know, these men didn't know

  142. that the day would come in the distant

  143. future where each one of them would uh

  144. would die for the cause of Christ and

  145. indeed they would they would taste death

  146. for him. But here he's not talking about

  147. reigning. He's talking about suffering.

  148. and as well himself. He's not talking

  149. about himself reigning here and he will

  150. reign. But before he reigns, he has to

  151. come and be baptized with this with this

  152. uh baptism that he mentions here. And he

  153. says, "Be baptism with baptized with the

  154. baptism that I have in verse 22." And

  155. they said, "We are able." They were

  156. wrong. They were going to be able, you

  157. know, once he prepared them. and you

  158. shall drink indeed of my cup and be

  159. baptized with the baptism that I am

  160. baptized with but to sit on the right

  161. hand and on the left is not for me to

  162. give but for my father. So he is

  163. mentioning his second baptism here which

  164. uh if we put this together with John 18

  165. 11

  166. uh there we see where it is mentioned

  167. that that this is the baptism the death

  168. the Jesus death upon the cross. So we

  169. have here the two baptisms that he

  170. mentions the water and here uh with fire

  171. and his death. I turn over to Matthew

  172. 26.

  173. Matthew 26

  174. and verse 42

  175. here. He says, "Oh my father, this cup

  176. may not pass away from me unless I drink

  177. it." And he says, "Your will be done."

  178. So even Jesus defines what this second

  179. baptism is uh for him. uh it's it's to

  180. do his father's will. So we have the two

  181. baptisms of Jesus. We have the water

  182. one. We have the the one here uh the

  183. baptism of his death. Now turn to

  184. Malachi chapter 3.

    Malachi 3 chapter mention

  185. That's the book right before Matthew.

  186. Even I can find this one.

  187. Malachi.

  188. And we've looked at a lot of these Old

  189. Testament verses that describe Jesus in

  190. detail. Remember, we even the the Old

  191. Testament even talks about the 30 pieces

  192. of silver. So, we have a lot of uh

  193. prophecies about these things. And the

  194. one here in Malachi, it's similar to

  195. what Isaiah said about the Messiah

  196. and also John the Baptist. So the Old

  197. Testament connects these two men. Um,

  198. one is a prophet and one is the son of

  199. God.

  200. But the son of God deserves a messenger.

  201. The son of God deserves a prophet to be

  202. uh just preceding him. Uh, in fact,

  203. they're so close u I think they're

  204. second cousins.

  205. Um, humanly speaking, they're that

  206. close.

  207. And here God says in verse one, "Behold,

  208. I will send my messenger,

  209. and he shall prepare the way before me,

  210. God speaking, sayeth the Lord, and you

  211. will seek and suddenly come to his

  212. temple, even the messenger of the

  213. covenant, whom you delight in, and

  214. behold, he shall come, sayeth the Lord

  215. of hosts." So John the Baptist is going

  216. to come the the the the forerunner the

  217. messenger uh here in the last book of

  218. the Old Testament says that the Messiah

  219. is going to have this uh messenger run

  220. before him.

  221. And we don't see any water mentioned

  222. here at all. you know what um you know

  223. that that's going to come uh at here

  224. here in Matthew chapter 3 but Malachiah

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  225. God says you know return to me that's

  226. the whole point of this prophecy

  227. God says you've strayed you know and and

  228. and if we read the whole chapter here we

  229. would see all the way up to verse 7

  230. where he says even from the days of your

  231. father you have gone from my ordinances

  232. and you have not kept them return to

  233. So that's what repentance is, you know,

  234. is a returning to God. It is a

  235. confession of our sin. It is a

  236. realization of our sin. It's a real

  237. realization of our separation from God

  238. and our need for a savior and a

  239. redeemer.

  240. And then verse two of chapter 3 says

  241. says, "Who the who is he that can abide

  242. his coming?" Well, this is his return.

  243. So we have the first and second advents

  244. right here in in just two verses. And

  245. the Old Testament often amazingly does

  246. this. And here he he doesn't talk about

  247. you know what uh he Jesus is going to do

  248. in his first advent.

  249. Even Jesus said I've not come to judge.

  250. I have come to save.

  251. So verse one Jesus is going to come and

  252. save. Verse two Jesus is going to come

  253. and judge. Same same person. you know,

  254. it's the Messiah.

  255. You know, he's going to be our savior

  256. and our redeemer as well as as the one

  257. who comes back and will judge all the

  258. nations. And that's what Isaiah says as

  259. well. We saw that earlier on when we

  260. looked there in chapter 40 and verse

  261. three. It's it's almost an identical

  262. prophecy of the Lord Jesus. So, and John

  263. the Baptist, the messenger going before

  264. him. And John was a he was a special

  265. prophet. And and we saw earlier

  266. that Jesus pointed that out. And he was

  267. a special prophet because he's the one

  268. that pointed directly to the Messiah.

  269. Now, he wasn't God. And a lot of people

  270. got confused about these things. Turn

  271. over to Luke 1.

  272. You know, Jesus birth was special.

  273. John's birth was special. You know, they

  274. weren't the same, but but there was a

  275. reason that, you know, that

  276. John the Baptist was born, you know,

  277. just

  278. months or, you know, whatever it was

  279. before Jesus was born. They're almost

  280. the same age and they're related humanly

  281. speaking.

  282. And here the angel says, you know, God

  283. was involved in John the Baptist

  284. birth as well.

  285. And Jesus already said

  286. he he was a great prophet

  287. and he was great because of what he did

  288. and how separated and set apart he was

  289. and whole family was. He come from a a

  290. uh the line of the priesthood.

  291. But here in chapter 1 verse 13, the

  292. angel said, "Fear not, Zakius, for your

  293. prayer is heard, and your wife Elizabeth

  294. shall bear a son, and you'll call his

  295. name John." So clear down to the details

  296. here about this messenger that's going

  297. to go before Jesus,

  298. you know, and that and the family of of

  299. John was um

  300. you know, they were a they were a godly

  301. family,

  302. you know, they weren't,

  303. you know, somebody else. They were a

  304. wonderful family. It's almost like Mary

  305. and Joseph, you know, they were a

  306. wonderful couple.

  307. as well. So God picked the right ones to

  308. give Jesus the Messiah to. God picks the

  309. right ones to give John the Baptist to.

  310. And notice what they say about his

  311. ministry.

  312. And you will have joy and gladness and

  313. you will you will re shall receive at

  314. his birth.

  315. For he shall be great in the sight of

  316. the Lord.

  317. You'll drink neither wine nor strong

  318. drink. and he shall be filled with the

  319. Holy Spirit even from his mother's womb.

  320. You know, there's no one it says that

  321. about

  322. uh here the only one greater is Jesus

  323. who is God. And uh and we saw that last

  324. week. It's over there in verse 34 about

  325. Mary. You know, she said, "I don't even

  326. know a man." And and the Bible says

  327. there that the Holy Spirit came upon

  328. her. The power of the highest

  329. overshadowed her there in verse 35.

  330. So, two great spectacular things we have

  331. here with John the Baptist and with with

  332. Jesus and Jesus being greater and John

  333. saying so John said I'm not him. I'm the

  334. I'm the voice of the one crying in the

  335. wilderness

  336. and he's going to have a ministry here.

  337. He's filled with the Holy Spirit

  338. uh and the children of Israel shall he

  339. turn to the Lord their God. There it is.

  340. What's John going to do? What's his

  341. ministry? He's going to turn Israel

  342. to the Lord their God whom Mary is going

  343. to give birth to here as we saw in verse

  344. 34.

  345. and he shall go before him and in the

  346. spirit and power of Elijah

  347. to turn the hearts of the fathers to the

  348. children, the disobedient to the wisdom

  349. of the just to make ready a people

  350. prepared for the Lord. So that's what

  351. John's ministry is now. He goes he is in

  352. the wilderness and having you know grown

  353. up there in the in the nation and around

  354. these you know these are the Jordan and

  355. you know the areas where he was born and

  356. Jesus is born in Bethlehem and these

  357. things are going on not in the middle of

  358. Jerusalem where you know somebody might

  359. think you know God's going to come. No

  360. these are out these are out in the

  361. wilderness John he's going to come in

  362. the wilderness. Jesus is going to show

  363. up in the wilderness,

  364. not in um the temple.

  365. So he was filled from his birth. He will

  366. come in the power of Elijah.

  367. And you know, we read about John. He he

  368. lacked no um he he wasn't afraid, was

  369. he? You know, how would you like to

  370. stand and call all the religious people

  371. in town vipers?

  372. And he did.

  373. And his whole point was to turn people

  374. to the Lord. Even the re the worst ones

  375. were the religious people.

  376. How they needed to repent.

  377. And how they needed to come to know the

  378. Lord. And Zachcharias said unto the

  379. angel, "How shall I know this? I'm an

  380. old man and my wife is well stricken and

  381. you."

  382. Sometimes God

  383. makes us chuckle.

  384. And the angel will say unto him, I am

  385. Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God,

  386. and I am sent to speak unto thee and to

  387. show thee these glad tidings. That's

  388. good news. That's what it is, you know,

  389. and that's the whole point that we

  390. looked at in the Old Testament when we

  391. went clear back to Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  392. where the seed of the woman is

  393. mentioned. And all the way through the

  394. Old Testament, we've had that coming

  395. through, you know, all the ones that God

  396. sent the seed through,

  397. uh, Noah and Shem, and then, you know,

  398. ultimately David and, and that's the way

  399. the New Testament starts out is here. He

  400. is

  401. the seed of the woman and and here the

  402. seed of the woman was married and and

  403. there is no seed of Joseph. That's what

  404. the Bible says. you know, this this man

  405. begott his son. This man begott his son.

  406. This man begott his son until it gets to

  407. Jesus. And then it doesn't say that

  408. about Joseph. It says the Holy Spirit

  409. begott him.

  410. So now let's go to John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  411. And you know, John, he doesn't just

  412. repeat what everybody else has said

  413. about this event. He he really brings

  414. out some stuff for us here. uh to take

  415. note of. Turn back to to John

  416. and this is a part of John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  417. This may be one of the best chapters in

  418. the whole Bible of everything that has

  419. went before.

  420. And and you know what Jesus said to

  421. Nicodemus, except a man be born again,

  422. he cannot see the kingdom of God.

  423. So now John the Baptist has handed off

  424. the preaching and the teaching to the

  425. one that he baptized to the one he said

  426. don't listen to me listen to him

  427. and John chapter 3 ends up

    John 3 chapter mention

  428. ends with the the testimony about John

  429. the Baptist

  430. and John sheds a lot of light on these

  431. things in verse 22 after these things

  432. came Jesus and his disciples enter to

  433. the land of Judea

  434. and there he tried with them and

  435. baptized. So we see that John the

  436. Baptist ministry in continued on even

  437. after Matthew chapter 3 um and Luke

Matthew 3 chapter mention Luke 3 chapter mention

  438. chapter 3 uh here John chapter 3 John

    John 3 chapter mention

  439. sort of tells us what we don't know from

  440. the other gospels

  441. and you might read this and say well was

  442. Jesus baptizing?

  443. No, Jesus was not baptizing. Let's read

  444. the whole the whole verse context for

  445. John was not yet cast into prison. So

  446. this is before Matthew chap 11 where

  447. John gets cast in prison.

  448. Then there arose a question between some

  449. of John's disciples and the Jews about

  450. purifying.

  451. Now the Jews, now here's a good thing

  452. for us to see with the water. Why the

  453. water, you know, why the water? Why was

  454. John baptizing with water? Why was John

  455. saying repent, you know, and talking

  456. about, you know, uh um confessing your

  457. sins and fleeing from your sins? And the

  458. Jews thought that that water could

  459. purify.

  460. I mean, that's sort of, you know,

  461. ingrained in the Jews and especially the

  462. Pharisees.

  463. You know, we we have the one context

  464. where they were baptizing their hands,

  465. letting the water run down their elbows,

  466. you know, and say that, you know, we

  467. didn't eat with unclean hands, but

  468. they're eating with unclean hands.

  469. That's here as well with the with the um

  470. at the uh right after the the marriage

  471. when Jesus turned the water into wine.

  472. But one thing at a time, he says, uh,

  473. "And they came unto John and said,

  474. Rabbi,

  475. um, he that was with thee beyond the

  476. Jordan,

  477. to whom you bear witness,

  478. you know, John did his John did his job.

  479. John did his ministry. He said, "Here he

  480. is. Here he is. Here he is.

  481. I I must decrease and he must increase."

  482. And John said, uh, behold the same

  483. baptized with all men and can and all

  484. men come to him. And John answered and

  485. said, a man can receive nothing except

  486. to be given to him from heaven. And you

  487. yourselves bear witness that I said, I

  488. am not the Christ, but I sent before

  489. him. John did his job and did it well.

  490. And he that the he that has the bride

  491. is the bridegroom.

  492. That's Jesus. He's the one with the

  493. bride. He's the one with the church.

  494. Here John mentions the church before the

  495. the day of Pentecost in Acts. You know,

  496. this is this is just amazing

  497. that he knows these things.

  498. But he that heareth them rejoices

  499. greatly because of the bridegroom's

  500. voice.

  501. And this is my joy. Therefore, I am

  502. fulfilled. He must increase and I must

  503. decrease. So, we have the testimony of

  504. John here

  505. um in John the Baptist

  506. about these things and he says in verse

  507. 31, he that cometh from above

  508. is above all.

  509. So, the apostles know here when this is

  510. written about the deity of Christ. John

  511. knew about the deity of Christ. How is

  512. that? Well, John was there when God

  513. said, "This is my beloved son whom I am

  514. well pleased." Back there in Matthew

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  515. chapter 3. And what he has seen and

  516. heard that he testifies

  517. and no man receives his testimony. And

  518. he that has received his testimony has

  519. set the seal to this. God is true.

  520. Uh for he whom God has sent speaks the

  521. words of God.

  522. For God gives not the spirit by measure

  523. unto him. The father loves the son and

  524. he has given all things into his hand.

  525. So John the Baptist handed off his

  526. ministry to Jesus

  527. to to where we can proclaim now the

  528. gospel of the son of God as having died

  529. for our sins. That's what verse 36

  530. here's the gospel. He that believes on

  531. the son has everlasting life. That's it.

  532. You want everlasting life, believe on

  533. the son.

  534. And he that believeth not, the Son shall

  535. not see life, but the wrath of God

  536. abides on him. So John finishes his

  537. ministry where Malachi says he's going

  538. to

  539. he's going to come back um and judge the

  540. world. So it's just incredible to see

  541. these things. And you know here uh we

  542. seen John baptizing and these things

  543. were going on but uh John hands off his

  544. ministry to Jesus

  545. the prophet does. So let's go back to

  546. Matthew chapter 3.

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  547. Why was Jesus baptized?

  548. This is the beginning of his ministry.

  549. That's one reason.

  550. And we're going to see another one.

  551. Go back to Matthew chapter 3.

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  552. And

  553. John knows this is Jesus. He knows this

  554. is the son of God. He knows this is the

  555. Messiah. There's no shouldn't be any

  556. doubt in John's mind.

  557. And John knows because look what he

  558. says.

  559. You coming to me

  560. to be baptized?

  561. You know, look at John's reaction

  562. and then look at Jesus reaction. Permit

  563. it to be so now.

  564. So John's just in shock that the son of

  565. God has come to be baptized by him. So

  566. the reason John is baptizing and the

  567. reason Jesus gets baptized, they're not

  568. the same.

  569. You know, it's uh they're not the same.

  570. And we'll talk about this as we go

  571. through this here. But why is John uh

  572. just amazed up there in verse 13?

  573. And why is this reaction

  574. uh that we have from him? What you

  575. coming to me?

  576. And the reason being is because John

  577. knows that Jesus is the spotless lamb of

  578. God. Remember

  579. John says that in his gospel. John John

  580. the Apostle said John the Baptist said

  581. we got a lot of John's this morning.

  582. It's him. Behold the lamb of God that

  583. takes away the sin of the world. It's

  584. the deity of Christ. He's God.

  585. And for the Jews, there were a lot of

  586. people who thought this. And and um here

  587. John

  588. literally he's pointing to Jesus. He

  589. says that he's the one, you know, you're

  590. the Messiah. You're the son of God.

  591. You know, you're coming to me.

  592. And uh you know, and then we have here

  593. the whole trinity shows up in verse 16.

  594. And uh you know the these three are

  595. already united with this.

  596. You know, God the Father didn't say,

  597. "Well, you know what? My son's doing a

  598. pretty good job down there. I think I'll

  599. just endorse him." That's not what this

  600. is. He was endorsed before he ever got

  601. here. And John sees that. John knows

  602. that he's the sinless son of God.

  603. And uh you know John he he goes on to

  604. say um

  605. that

  606. he can wash us from our sins. John the

  607. apostle.

  608. So John here John the Baptist the

  609. greatest of the prophets

  610. baptizes

  611. the son of God.

  612. And this marks Jesus earthly ministry

  613. the beginning of it. How do we know

  614. that? because of what John says over in

  615. John chapter 3. I mean, John just lit

    John 3 chapter mention

  616. John the Apostle literally says John the

  617. Baptist did exactly what the book of

  618. Malachi said he would do. He just hands

  619. off the ministry

  620. to Jesus that began in the wilderness.

  621. And um you know these are

  622. some important things. So here's where

  623. Jesus earthly ministry begins because

  624. look what happens next is his temptation

  625. and we're going to look at that but not

  626. today.

  627. So you know John the Baptist he was the

  628. son of a priest and you know John he was

  629. a prophet and he was a priest that God

  630. was working through and he pointed to

  631. the greater prophet. He turned to the

  632. greater priest, Jesus. And here he is

  633. realizing that I'm just a man and he is

  634. God. Jesus said, "Permit it to be so now

  635. where becometh to fulfill

  636. all righteousness."

  637. You know, and water, the Jews thought

  638. the water could purify, and water can

  639. purify, but only physically. It can't

  640. purify

  641. um spiritually.

  642. Only the blood of the lamb can do that.

  643. And that's exactly what John says uh in

  644. John chapter 1. Uh it is the blood of

    John 1 chapter mention

  645. the lamb that will cleanse us from all

  646. unrighteousness. So, you know, Jesus,

  647. you know, he's he was God when he was

  648. born. You know, we talked about that at

  649. the incarnation. We talked about that at

  650. the virgin birth. He was God before he

  651. ever come to earth.

  652. He became a man. He didn't become God.

  653. He was already God.

  654. He was already eternal.

  655. But he become a man to come and to live

  656. a life on this earth for a reason. And

  657. that reason was his second baptism that

  658. he spoke of as well. So we need to

  659. remember that this first one is just the

  660. beginning and we need to remember the

  661. second one that he spoke of that he was

  662. going to become the spotless or he is

  663. the spotless lamb of God. He's as God,

  664. he cannot sin.

  665. So if he can't sin, then that's, you

  666. know, his deity is greater than his

  667. humanity. And the devil's going to test

  668. him on those things here in in Matthew

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  669. chapter 4. And we'll talk about that

  670. later. But go back to Luke chapter 3

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  671. with me.

  672. Luke

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  673. chapter 3.

  674. and

  675. verse three,

  676. Luke 3:3.

    Luke 3:3

  677. And he came into all the country about

  678. the Jordan preaching the baptism of

  679. repentance for the remission of sins.

  680. This is this is John the Baptist, the

  681. guy that Malachi spoke of. And we saw in

  682. the other um the other text and it is

  683. written and here Luke mentions Isaiah's

  684. prophecy which is identical to Malachias

  685. uh the prophet the voice of one crying

  686. in the wilderness prepare ye the way of

  687. the Lord and make his path straight. You

  688. know nothing about the Messiah needing

  689. to repent of sin. You know it's this is

  690. beyond that. He's sinless.

  691. He is the sinless son of God. And then

  692. look if you will in Luke chapter 1

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  693. and and here was the intent of John's

  694. ministry

  695. not for for us all. And then you know

  696. Jesus comes along at the end of Matthew

  697. and says to be baptized in the name of

  698. the father the son and the holy spirit.

  699. That is indeed water baptism. And we'll

  700. we'll talk about the Christians baptisms

  701. at a different time. Today we're talking

  702. about Jesus baptism

  703. and John the reason that John was there

  704. and John pointing to him to give

  705. knowledge of salvation unto his people

  706. for the remissions of sin. You know

  707. they're thinking water. Oh water can

  708. make me clean. John says no

  709. the blood is what will make you clean.

  710. and through the tender mercy of God

  711. whereby uh so so Luke here tells us the

  712. same thing that Matthew told us, the

  713. same thing that John told us, the same

  714. thing that John the Baptist said, the

  715. same thing that John the Apostle said,

  716. the same thing that Jesus said.

  717. So here we have the testimony of

  718. scriptures establishing

  719. the reason why Jesus was baptized.

  720. not for his repentance, not for his

  721. remission of sin.

  722. You know, that was everybody else that

  723. John was baptizing.

  724. But we can see here that, you know,

  725. there were there there are phrases that

  726. the Jews knew like, you know, the

  727. Passover, you know, you you say Passover

  728. and the Jews were like, "Oh, Passover,

  729. it's you know, that's that's an event."

  730. There's a lot of, you know, a lot of

  731. truth and a lot of revelation from the

  732. word of God about the Passover,

  733. you know, God passing over our sins

  734. because of blood,

  735. you know. So, so they're not ignorant

  736. people, you know, they've had the word

  737. of God. That's an that's a part of this

  738. the amazing thing when we get to the

  739. sinlessness of Jesus. You know, God

  740. didn't send him, you know, out to a

  741. desert island where there was no one. He

  742. put him right where all the sinners

  743. were, right where the devil was. And let

  744. him get tested. But he was holy before

  745. he was ever tested. That's what verse 75

  746. says. In holiness and righteousness

  747. before him all the days of our life. And

  748. this child Jesus is him. So John does a

  749. great job

  750. of pointing to Jesus and telling us who

  751. he is.

  752. And the word salvation here, it it means

  753. deliverance.

  754. You know, we that's that's that's our

  755. problem as sinners. We don't understand

  756. we need delivered

  757. from our sins.

  758. We don't think we have any. And if we

  759. did, maybe we can do something to

  760. rectify them with God. We're we're

  761. ignorant. We have sins. And and here he

  762. says the only way that we can come and

  763. enjoy this uh salvation

  764. to his people to the Jews first and then

  765. to the Gentiles the tender mercy of God.

  766. Jesus is the tender mercy of God and

  767. he's the one that God sent forth here.

  768. And you know this, the Jews had to

  769. scapegoat.

  770. You know, boy, that really spoke volumes

  771. to me about my sin. Well, how did God

  772. get rid of my sin? Well, the Jews had

  773. they had the scapegoat. You know, they

  774. would bring the scapegoat in and people

  775. would lay their hands on the head of the

  776. scapegoat, which represented their sins

  777. leaving them and going on the goat.

  778. And then they wouldn't kill that goat.

  779. They would take him out in the

  780. wilderness and turn him loose and hope

  781. he never came back. That was the

  782. scapegoat.

  783. So the Messiah, the lamb of God, if

  784. we're going to have the forgiveness of

  785. sins, if our our sins are going to be

  786. paid for and remembered no more, then we

  787. have to let the sinless son of God

  788. accomplish this for us. You know, the

  789. Jews knew what a trespass offering was.

  790. They, you know, they more than anyone

  791. understood sin. They more than anyone

  792. understood the consequences of sin. And

  793. it's not because they were smarter than

  794. anybody else. It's because they were the

  795. chosen of God.

  796. So God in incredible way

  797. works through this Jewish nation

  798. to bring about not only his the Messiah,

  799. but the one who pointed

  800. to the Messiah. Go to Romans chapter 4.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  801. Romans

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  802. chapter 4.

  803. You know,

  804. he

  805. didn't How could the angel say he's

  806. going to take away all the sins if he

  807. had a risk of sinning? you know, he he

  808. was sinless before he ever came here

  809. and he remained sinless. He We're going

  810. to talk about that. Um the sinlessness

  811. of Christ

  812. and this testing, that's what it did.

  813. You know, it uh it made him pure if you

  814. can imagine.

  815. And you know, the the Jews thought not

  816. keeping the Sabbath was sin. You know,

  817. that's in their mind. And Jesus said,

  818. "No, I'll tell you what sin is. It's to

  819. think an evil thought. It doesn't even

  820. have to become action."

  821. And the Jews, the Pharisees, they were

  822. they were, you know, the most religious

  823. people around, yet they didn't even

  824. understand

  825. uh the their own sinfulness.

  826. So the Hebrew word

  827. in Romans chapter 4

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  828. and I want to go over to verse five. If

  829. you said atonement to a Jew,

  830. he'd know what you were talking about.

  831. Oh, the atonement. You're talking about

  832. the covering, mercy seat, the the

  833. tabernacle, the the place where God came

  834. and met with us where our sins were

  835. covered. Yeah, that's the atonement.

  836. But in a greater way, Jesus come

  837. and shed his blood

  838. to make that atonement.

  839. That's the greatness of the book of

  840. Hebrew. But here in Romans chapter 4 and

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  841. verse 7,

  842. Paul says, "Blessed." This is like that

  843. good news.

  844. Oh, the good news of Jesus

  845. all the way back to Genesis chapter

  846. three, the seed of the one. That good

  847. news. Yeah, that good news.

  848. Him, he it is

  849. says John the Baptist will come after me

  850. and he'll do greater things. And here's

  851. the one of the greater things he did.

  852. Blessed are they

  853. whose iniquities are forgiven and whose

  854. sins are covered. There's the word

  855. atonement.

  856. And to the Jew, it was like, I got to go

  857. every year, you know, and then I go out

  858. and I sin more and I got to come back,

  859. you know, my sins are just a constant

  860. reminder to me that I'm a sinner.

  861. But now through the blood of the lamb,

  862. we can have this blessedness and have

  863. our iniquities and our sins forgiven.

  864. You say, just the best ones or the worst

  865. ones? No.

  866. No. So there's no best ones or worst

  867. ones when it comes to sin.

  868. It's all of our sin from the time we're

  869. born till we die

  870. or covered

  871. by the blood of the lamb.

  872. Blessed is he that whom the Lord will

  873. not impute his sin. So it's up to God

  874. who gets forgiven and who doesn't.

  875. Remember they had a hard time when Jesus

  876. come down. They said, "What? Who's he

  877. think he is? Only God can forgive sin.

  878. See, the Jews knew that. And here Paul

  879. knew that. Here Paul tells us,

  880. only God can forgive sin.

  881. No man can do that. I don't care how

  882. many titles you put on him. He's still a

  883. man. He is a sinner like us.

  884. He needs a savior. He needs a redeemer.

  885. The only sinless one

  886. is the son of God. And go to Luke 17

  887. because here that here that uh episode

  888. is that I mentioned

  889. in Luke chapter 17.

    Luke 17 chapter mention

  890. There's human and divine forgiveness.

  891. You know Jesus said for us to forgive

  892. one another. Don't hold grudges with

  893. each other.

  894. you know, forgive if any man trespass

  895. against you. And Peter's like, "Well,

  896. Lord, what if they do it again?"

  897. Jesus said, "Forgive them again

  898. until 70* 7."

  899. So, you know, we should

  900. we need forgiveness and we need to

  901. forgive. We need to do both. But Jesus

  902. didn't need any forgiveness.

  903. He had never failed in anything. He's

  904. God.

  905. And here in Luke 17

  906. and verse three, we have this account.

  907. Take heed to yourselves and your brother

  908. trespass against you. If he repents,

  909. forgive him. For if he trespasses

  910. against thee seven times in a day, um

  911. you shall forgive him.

  912. And the apostle said unto him, Lord,

  913. increase our faith. You know, we can't

  914. even forgive one another, let alone be

  915. forgiven like God forgives.

  916. And when God forgives, that's different

  917. than when men forgive.

  918. And that's what this is. That's what

  919. this atonement is. That's what that's

  920. the difference between John the Baptist

  921. and and Jesus.

  922. John's a man and Jesus is God.

  923. And the scriptures clearly

  924. proclaim that. Now, let's go back and

  925. see what Jesus said. Go back to Matthew

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  926. chapter 3.

  927. We saw John's amazement

  928. and the reason for it. Here we're going

  929. to see what Jesus says

  930. in Matthew chapter 3. I got a red letter

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  931. Bible, so all this is in red.

  932. He's without sin.

  933. He's not here to

  934. be forgiven.

  935. He's not here to confess.

  936. He's not here to say, "I'm a sinner."

  937. He's here to say, "I'm not a sinner.

  938. I'm the son of God." And the whole

  939. trinity

  940. uh one right after another

  941. agree with them here. So Jesus answers

  942. our question. Why was he baptized? He's

  943. let it be permitted now for thus it

  944. becomes to fulfill all righteousness.

  945. Well, you know, Jesus and we're going to

  946. we're going to see when we look at the

  947. sinlessness of Jesus, you know, when he

  948. died for us, it wasn't like he was just,

  949. you know, some some, you know, stamp

  950. cutout that we get out of a magazine.

  951. No, no. He really is the son of God. He

  952. really did uh get tested and he really

  953. did succeed in these tests and we're

  954. going to see that uh in in the future

  955. here. But Jesus is baptized to please

  956. the father.

  957. Okay?

  958. That's why Jesus is baptized.

  959. Verse 17, a voice come from heaven.

  960. This is my beloved son in whom I am well

  961. pleased. That's why Jesus was baptized.

  962. Please his father.

  963. So for us, he he wasn't baptized to be

  964. an example. You know, Jesus is our

  965. example. He's baptized. So we need to be

  966. baptized.

  967. That's that's a wrong argument.

  968. I will say when we get to talk about the

  969. Christian baptism, there are there there

  970. are two maybe three for us. There's

  971. water for us. Jesus commands it at the

  972. end of Matthew chapter 28.

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  973. And then he told the other apostles they

  974. were going to be baptized with fire. So

  975. people that are martyed for Jesus,

  976. that's that might be their their second

  977. baptism. But the the one for us is when

  978. we're put into the body of Christ.

  979. That's 1 Corinthians chapter 12. That's

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  980. Romans chapter 6. Where the moment we're

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  981. saved, we're put into the body of

  982. Christ. We're baptized into the body of

  983. Christ. These things we'll talk about in

  984. the future. But but the reason that

  985. Jesus is baptized is to reconcile us to

  986. God.

  987. So all these great things that he's come

  988. to earth to do and and has done when we

  989. get in Christ and that's we're he

  990. pleased the father for us all. Every

  991. sinner, no matter how guilty, no matter

  992. how much sin you have, the blood of the

  993. lamb can wash away our sin. Every spot

  994. and wrinkle of it.

  995. So that's who

  996. Jesus is. He's the sinless son of God

  997. and he's going to make the atonement

  998. for us. And he is sinless. He's not like

  999. us. He's not repenting of sin here.

1000. We're being baptized because, you know,

1001. he he's a sinner. He is not. That's why

1002. John is amazed there in verse 30.

1003. You know, there is a righteousness to

  1004. the law.

1005. And you know, next time we get together,

1006. we're going to look at that, how we

1007. benefit from Jesus fulfilling the law

1008. for us. And it starts with his

  1009. temptation

1010. here in verse four in chapter 4.

1011. Paul said the law law is holy, just, and

  1012. good.

1013. Because he saw what Jesus did. So he

1014. knows that is holy, just, and good. And

1015. it helps us sinners understand our

1016. sinfulness and our need of a redeemer

1017. and a savior to which God himself has

  1018. provided.

1019. Father, we come to you this morning and

1020. we thank you for the testimony of the

1021. scripture that you not only sent us a

  1022. redeemer,

1023. a perfect savior, you sent us a

  1024. forerunner, John the Baptist, who's a

1025. man like us. He He needed a savior like

1026. we need one. But your son didn't need a

1027. savior. He is the savior.

1028. Uh he he would he didn't fail. He'll

  1029. never fail.

1030. He's the same yesterday, today, and

1031. forever. And we thank you for that.

1032. Thank you for the scripture that guides

1033. us to understand this great salvation

1034. that you provided and our great need for

1035. this salvation. and we thank you in

  1036. Jesus precious name. Amen.

1037. >> Lord, as we go from this place

  1038. loving you more,

  1039. trusting you more.

1040. May the power of your love and the light

1041. of your word shine to a sin darkened

1042. world as we go from this
