  1. Good morning, everyone. It's good to be here with you. I'm wearing a mask today because I'm sick.

  2. And I thought I was totally fine until after the baptism class. I must have been running on adrenaline.

  3. I just kind of crashed right after and was in bed all afternoon and evening.

  4. So I'm sorry if I exposed some of you guys to the baptism class.

  5. Hopefully you guys don't get sick. I did test negative for COVID.

  6. And I think I'm far enough away from you guys that I don't have to wear a mask right now.

  7. But I will wear a mask when I'm doing communion later.

  8. So if you would turn with me in your Bibles to Revelation chapter 2.

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  9. We're in verses 12 to 17, the letter to the church, to the angel of the church in Pergamum.

  10. And let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  11. Father, give me strength this morning to proclaim your word.

  12. And may your word, which pierces to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow,

  13. pierce our hearts.

  14. Mark us.

  15. Mark us.

  16. Seal us indelibly with the name of Jesus Christ.

  17. And help us to remember what privilege that is, the joy that is.

  18. As we go through this passage together.

  19. In Jesus' name we pray.

  20. Amen.

  21. If you are willing and able, please stand for the reading of God's word from Revelation 2, 12 to 17.

  22. And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write,

  23. the words of him who has the sharp two-edged sword.

  24. I know where you dwell, where Satan's throne is.

  25. Yet you hold fast my name.

  26. And you did not deny my faith, even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness,

  27. who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.

  28. But I have a few things against you.

  29. You have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam,

  30. who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel,

  31. so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality.

  32. So also you have some who hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans.

  33. Therefore repent.

  34. If not, I will come to you soon and war against them with the sword of my mouth.

  35. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

  36. To the one who conquers, I will give some of the hidden manna,

  37. and I will give him a white stone with a new name written on the stone

  38. that no one knows except the one who receives it.

  39. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  40. You may be seated.

  41. The 12th century historical fiction written by Geoffrey of Monmouth

  42. called History of the Kings of Britain

  43. is one of the earliest to tell the legend of King Arthur.

  44. And there are many works of European literature

  45. that tell the story of Arthur,

  46. and they vary in their details.

  47. So don't hackle me if my details don't fit yours.

  48. But one common motif is of a young earther

  49. coming into possession of his famous sword, Excalibur.

  50. And the work entitled Prose Merlin

  51. claims that Excalibur was planted in an anvil,

  52. planted in an iron anvil that was sitting on top of a stone,

  53. and it was planted through both the anvil and the stone.

  54. So obviously that's supposed to communicate

  55. how powerful the sword this is,

  56. sharp and durable it is.

  57. And it says, the legend said that,

  58. whoso pulleth out this sword of this stone and anvil

  59. is rightwise king born of all England.

  60. Arthur pulls out the sword with ease,

  61. which no one else could pull out,

  62. and thereby proves his kingship of Britain,

  63. that the kingship rightly belongs to him.

  64. And there are many legends that tell the story

  65. of this powerful magical sword,

  66. and this is historical fiction,

  67. so keep that in mind.

  68. The dream of Ronneby says that Arthur's sword

  69. had a design of two chimeras on the golden hilt.

  70. A chimera is from Greek mythology,

  71. and it's a fire-breathing monster

  72. that's part lion, part goat, and part dragon.

  73. And the legend says that whenever Arthur unsheathed his sword,

  74. that actual flames of fire emanated from the chimera's mouth.

  75. Another account says that the Excalibur,

  76. when drawn in combat, the blade shone so brightly,

  77. like the light of 30 torches, like the blazing sun,

  78. so it's to blind the eyes of the enemies.

  79. It is reminiscent of the glorious risen Jesus,

  80. from whose mouth comes a sharp two-edged sword,

  81. whose eyes are like a flame of fire,

  82. and whose face is like the sun shining in full strength,

  83. as was described in the vision of Jesus in Revelation 1.

  84. But imagine if a sword like Excalibur really existed,

  85. that can slice through iron anvils and rocks

  86. like a knife through butter.

  87. A sword with which you can rout your enemies

  88. and conquer the nations.

  89. A sword is a symbol of authority,

  90. and of power, and of judgment.

  91. And we see that plainly in Romans 13, verse 4,

    Romans 13:4

  92. when it describes the governing authorities

  93. who bear the sword in order to be, quote,

  94. an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer.

  95. And Jesus introduces himself in this letter

  96. to the angel of the church in Pergamum,

  97. in verse 12, as the one who has the sharp two-edged sword,

  98. because he's trying to communicate his authority,

  99. and his power, and his judgment,

  100. because it's only when we view Christ

  101. in this glorious light,

  102. as the king and judge of all,

  103. that we will remain faithful

  104. and refuse to compromise with the sinful world.

  105. That's the main point of our passage today.

  106. Remembering the sword of Christ's judgment,

  107. we must repent of tolerating false teaching

  108. that promotes religious and moral compromise.

  109. And I'm going to talk about that in three parts.

  110. First, we'll talk about the two-edged sword of Christ,

  111. and then secondly, about the two holes

  112. of the church in Pergamum.

  113. And then third, two gifts for those who conquer.

  114. First, let's talk about the two-edged sword of Christ.

  115. It says in verse 2,

  116. the words of him who has the sharp two-edged sword.

  117. When you hear two-edged sword,

  118. some of you who are steeped in fantasy literature

  119. or video games or whatnot

  120. might think of a two-bladed sword

  121. that has like a hilt in the middle

  122. and has a blade coming out of one end,

  123. another blade coming out of the other end,

  124. kind of like Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode I.

  125. But that's not what a two-edged sword means.

  126. That's the two-bladed sword.

  127. That's actually,

  128. there's almost no historical evidence

  129. that such swords are ever used in combat

  130. because it's very impractical.

  131. Like you'll kill yourself using it,

  132. and you also lose a lot of leverage

  133. if you're doing this instead of having this.

  134. So that's just fantasy.

  135. The two-edged sword is sharpened on both edges of the blade.

  136. So this edge and this edge.

  137. So unlike some single-edge blades like a katana,

  138. Japanese katana,

  139. which is dull on one end and sharp on the other,

  140. this is a two-edged sword that's sharp on both ends

  141. like the Roman gladius,

  142. which is a type of sword,

  143. a double-edged sword that the Roman soldiers use

  144. around the time that Revelation was written.

  145. And that's actually where you get the word gladiator.

  146. They literally mean swordsman.

  147. They bear the gladius, which is the sword.

  148. And so this two-edged sword,

  149. there's some advantages and disadvantages,

  150. but the main advantage of a two-edged sword

  151. is that it has greater thrusting and piercing power

  152. more than a single-edged sword

  153. because two edges are sharp,

  154. and the enemies can't grab hold of your blade

  155. from the dull edge, whatnot.

  156. It's a powerful weapon.

  157. There's no dull section on the two edges of the sword.

  158. It's described in verse 2 as sharp,

  159. able to cut down God's foes with devastating force.

  160. And the sharp two-edged sword here

  161. is a reminder of Christ's authority

  162. to judge and punish evildoers.

  163. We can see this clearly in verse 16

  164. where Christ says concerning the Nicolaitans,

  165. therefore repent.

  166. If not, I will come to you soon

  167. and war against them with the sword of my mouth.

  168. The sword is an instrument of war

  169. with which Jesus brings down God's judgment

  170. upon the false teachers

  171. and those who follow their teaching.

  172. Revelation 19.15 confirms this.

  173. From his mouth comes a sharp sword

  174. with which to strike down the nations,

  175. that is the nations who are in rebellion

  176. against God and his Christ.

  177. So if you reject the gospel of Jesus Christ

  178. and refuse to follow him,

  179. then you're not just saying,

  180. well, that works for you,

  181. this works for me,

  182. but it's not for me.

  183. So you do you and I'll do me.

  184. No, you're actually declaring war against Jesus

  185. when you refuse to follow him.

  186. If you take an agnostic stance

  187. and refuse to make a commitment to Jesus,

  188. saying, well, I just don't have enough data.

  189. So I'm gonna refrain from forming a judgment.

  190. I'm not rejecting Jesus.

  191. I'm just withholding judgment.

  192. I'm undecided.

  193. You are actually taking a stance against Jesus

  194. because Jesus says that there is no neutral ground

  195. in this spiritual war.

  196. You're either with him or you're against him.

  197. It says in Matthew 12.30,

  198. whoever is not with me is against me,

  199. and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

  200. And so if you have not identified with Jesus

  201. and you have not gathered with him under his banner,

  202. then you face the fearful judgment

  203. of the one who has the sharp two-edged sword.

  204. Have you gathered with the people of God?

  205. Are you counted among their number?

  206. If not, you must repent.

  207. Repent of your sins.

  208. Put your faith in Jesus.

  209. At the end of the world,

  210. those who reject Jesus and refuse to repent of their sins

  211. will not merely cease to exist.

  212. They will face the fearful judgment

  213. of the one who has the sharp two-edged sword.

  214. As you probably already figured by now,

  215. this is not a literal sword.

  216. Jesus doesn't have a physical two-edged sword

  217. protruding out of his mouth.

  218. But the reason why it is described

  219. as the sword of his mouth in verse 16

  220. and described as coming from his mouth

  221. in verse 16 as well

  222. is that the sword is a symbolic representation

  223. of the word of God.

  224. We know from Ephesians 6.17

  225. that the word of God is the sword of the Spirit.

  226. This is the fulfillment of the prophecy

  227. in Isaiah 11.4,

  228. which said that the Messiah would judge the world

  229. with the rod of his mouth.

  230. It's hard for us to imagine

  231. were someone's word or breath

  232. having such awesome power.

  233. But that is the case when it comes to God.

  234. Remember how God created the world

  235. in Psalm 33.6,

  236. By the word of the Lord,

  237. the heavens were made.

  238. And by the breath of his mouth,

  239. all their host.

  240. This is what the linguists define

  241. as the performative word

  242. versus the constitutive word.

  243. When you say certain things,

  244. you're not just giving information,

  245. you're actually making something happen.

  246. So on your wedding day,

  247. when you say,

  248. I do,

  249. you're not just saying,

  250. giving information,

  251. saying that I give,

  252. I consent to this thing.

  253. No, you are actually consenting to it

  254. and taking a vow

  255. and committing to that.

  256. You're performing an act

  257. by saying something.

  258. So some of the words

  259. that we speak as human beings

  260. are constitutive.

  261. Some of the words we say

  262. are performative.

  263. But the key distinction is

  264. that in order to speak

  265. performative words,

  266. you have to have the authority

  267. to do that.

  268. You have to have the proper authority

  269. to enact such actions.

  270. So if you're just a random bystander

  271. and then you come to a man and a woman

  272. and then you say,

  273. I therefore pronounce you husband and wife,

  274. like nothing happens.

  275. You're not married, right?

  276. It has to be someone

  277. who has a rightful authority

  278. to do that, right?

  279. But with God,

  280. because he has all authority

  281. in heaven and on earth,

  282. whenever God says anything,

  283. it's always decretive

  284. and performative.

  285. It accomplishes what it set out to do.

  286. So when God says,

  287. let there be light,

  288. light is created out of nothing.

  289. It says in Psalm 10720,

  290. he sent out his word

  291. and he healed them

  292. and delivered them

  293. from their destruction.

  294. When God pronounces healing,

  295. there's healing.

  296. When God pronounces salvation,

  297. there's salvation.

  298. And like us with that same powerful word,

  299. when God judges

  300. and pronounces death,

  301. pronounces destruction,

  302. that happens.

  303. That's the awesome power

  304. of the sword of his mouth

  305. and there's no evading that sword.

  306. Isaiah 55, 10 to 11 says,

  307. for as the rain and the snow

  308. come down from heaven

  309. and do not return there,

  310. but water the earth,

  311. making it bring forth and sprout,

  312. giving seed to the sower

  313. and bread to the eater,

  314. so shall my word be

  315. that goes out from my mouth.

  316. It shall not return to me empty,

  317. but it shall accomplish

  318. that which I purpose

  319. and shall succeed

  320. in the thing

  321. for which I sent it.

  322. That is God's word.

  323. Hebrews 4, 12 says,

  324. living and active,

  325. sharper than any two-edged sword,

  326. piercing to the division

  327. of soul and of spirit

  328. and of joints and of marrow

  329. and discerning the thoughts

  330. and the intentions of the heart.

  331. That's the awesome power

  332. of the sword of the mouth

  333. of Jesus Christ.

  334. When I was a kid,

  335. my dream always

  336. was to grow up

  337. and become a soldier.

  338. And whenever my kindergarten

  339. or elementary school teachers

  340. would ask,

  341. hey, what was your dream job

  342. as you get older?

  343. It was always,

  344. I want to be a soldier.

  345. It was an odd dream to have

  346. because in Korea,

  347. there is mandatory

  348. military service for men

  349. and it's something

  350. that most people

  351. try to avoid, right?

  352. They find excuses to avoid.

  353. And I think,

  354. I mean,

  355. that didn't come true

  356. in a literal sense.

  357. I don't fight physical battles,

  358. but I think it's come true

  359. in a spiritual sense

  360. because whenever I stand here

  361. on the pulpit

  362. with God's word in my hand,

  363. I do believe

  364. that I am not just

  365. saying words.

  366. I'm wielding the sword

  367. of God himself,

  368. the sword of the spirit

  369. that cuts through

  370. the division of spirit

  371. and soul.

  372. So when you also

  373. are ministering God's word

  374. to other people

  375. in relationships,

  376. in your conversations,

  377. you're not merely talking.

  378. When you faithfully

  379. proclaim God's word

  380. and apply it

  381. to people's lives,

  382. you are a swordsman

  383. and a swordswoman

  384. of the Lord God himself.

  385. You're not merely

  386. spitting out words.

  387. You are wielding powerfully

  388. the heart piercing

  389. and the thoughts discerning,

  390. the wicked crushing,

  391. the devil slaying,

  392. and sinners saving,

  393. and dead resurrecting

  394. word of the living God.

  395. So don't be a soldier

  396. who's caught

  397. without his sword

  398. by his side.

  399. Meditate on it

  400. day and night.

  401. Store up God's word

  402. in your heart

  403. so that you might not

  404. sin against him.

  405. That's your sword.

  406. And following the pattern

  407. that we've noticed

  408. so far in the letters

  409. to the seven churches

  410. in Revelation,

  411. chapters two and three,

  412. the way Jesus

  413. identifies himself

  414. and introduces himself

  415. is deeply connected

  416. to the condition

  417. of the church.

  418. The church in Pergamum

  419. are tolerating

  420. false permissive teaching

  421. that condones idolatry

  422. and sexual immorality.

  423. So Jesus identifies himself

  424. with the fearsome

  425. sword of his mouth.

  426. But before Jesus

  427. critiques the church

  428. in Pergamum,

  429. he first commends them

  430. in verse 13.

  431. I know where you dwell,

  432. where Satan's throne is,

  433. yet you hold fast

  434. my name

  435. and you did not

  436. deny my faith

  437. even in the days

  438. of Antipas,

  439. my faithful witness,

  440. who was killed

  441. among you

  442. where Satan dwells.

  443. Jesus notes twice

  444. the fact that

  445. the believers dwell,

  446. these believers,

  447. where Satan dwells,

  448. where Satan's throne is.

  449. Satan has the throne

  450. which suggests

  451. that he is ruling

  452. over something.

  453. His rule is subordinate

  454. to God's ultimate

  455. sovereignty and rule

  456. and Satan can only

  457. act within the boundaries

  458. that God places around him

  459. as you can see

  460. in Job chapters 1 and 2.

    Job 1 chapter mention

  461. Nevertheless,

  462. Satan does exercise

  463. influence and power

  464. over the unbelieving world,

  465. which is why

  466. in Ephesians 2,

  467. it describes the devil

  468. as the prince

  469. of the power of the air

  470. who is at work,

  471. now at work,

  472. in the sons of disobedience.

  473. The gospel of John

  474. often refers to Satan

  475. as the ruler

  476. of this world,

  477. meaning the sinful world.

  478. And the church

  479. in Pergamum

  480. dwelled at the epicenter,

  481. the ground zero

  482. of Satan's destructive rule.

  483. This could be an allusion

  484. to several historical realities.

  485. Remember how Smyrna

  486. had boasted about

  487. having built

  488. the first temple

  489. dedicated to Rome?

  490. Now, Pergamum

  491. had a similar claim.

  492. They were the first city

  493. in Asia Minor

  494. to build a temple

  495. to a Roman ruler,

  496. a temple dedicated

  497. to the Augustus.

  498. So it served

  499. as a capital

  500. for the emperor cult,

  501. the worship of Caesar.

  502. And the city

  503. proudly designated itself

  504. the temple warden,

  505. the keeper of the temple

  506. for Caesar worship.

  507. In addition

  508. to the emperor cult,

  509. Pergamum was also

  510. center of thriving,

  511. other thriving pagan cults,

  512. like the cult

  513. of Asclepius.

  514. He is the serpent god

  515. of healing.

  516. His symbol

  517. is the serpent.

  518. And it was,

  519. that serpent emblem

  520. might be why

  521. John's referencing

  522. Satan's throne.

  523. But either way,

  524. we can't know

  525. what the exact

  526. historical referent is

  527. for the throne of Satan.

  528. We know that

  529. Satan's influence

  530. and authority

  531. were powerful

  532. in the city of Pergamum

  533. because that's where

  534. Satan dwells.

  535. And they would have faced,

  536. the believers in Pergamum

  537. would have faced

  538. tremendous political pressure

  539. and religious persecution

  540. because most Greek cities

  541. require citizens

  542. to make sacrifices

  543. to the Roman gods

  544. and to pay homage

  545. and worship

  546. to the Roman emperor.

  547. Now this background

  548. makes Jesus' commendation

  549. of the church

  550. in Pergamum

  551. all the more amazing.

  552. Jesus says,

  553. I know where you dwell,

  554. where Satan's throne is.

  555. And yet,

  556. you hold fast my name

  557. and you did not deny my faith

  558. even in the days of Antipas,

  559. my faithful witness,

  560. who was killed among you

  561. where Satan dwells.

  562. So one of their own church members

  563. named Antipas

  564. was killed in Pergamum

  565. for his faithful allegiance

  566. to Jesus Christ.

  567. Imagine one of our own church members

  568. being killed

  569. by the governing authorities

  570. for their faith in Jesus.

  571. Would we scatter in fear?

  572. Then?

  573. Would only a few return

  574. for the service

  575. the following week?

  576. Will we deny our faith?

  577. It says,

  578. the church in Pergamum

  579. held fast

  580. to the name of Jesus

  581. and did not deny the faith.

  582. They locked arms together

  583. and endured

  584. the blowback of persecution.

  585. And they had done

  586. what Jesus commanded

  587. the church in Samaritan

  588. to do in the previous passage,

  589. be faithful unto death.

  590. And they did this

  591. despite the fact

  592. that they dwell

  593. where Satan dwells.

  594. Notice the repetition

  595. of that idea

  596. in verse 13.

  597. First,

  598. Jesus says,

  599. I know where you dwell.

  600. And then he ends

  601. by saying,

  602. where Satan dwells.

  603. This contrast

  604. between the two clauses

  605. conveys a sense

  606. of conflict

  607. and opposition

  608. between those

  609. who serve Christ's throne

  610. and those

  611. who serve Satan's throne.

  612. They are not

  613. to compromise

  614. or commingle.

  615. people.

  616. I want to read

  617. an extended passage

  618. from 2 Corinthians 6,

  619. 14 to 18.

  620. I think we have that

  621. to show you.

  622. It says,

  623. do not be unequally yoked

  624. with unbelievers.

  625. For what partnership

  626. has righteousness

  627. with lawlessness?

  628. Or what fellowship

  629. has light

  630. with darkness?

  631. What accord

  632. has Christ

  633. with Belial?

  634. Or what portion

  635. does a believer

  636. share with an unbeliever?

  637. What agreement

  638. has the temple

  639. of God

  640. with idols?

  641. For we are the temple

  642. of the living God.

  643. As God said,

  644. I will make my dwelling

  645. among them

  646. and walk among them

  647. and I will be their God

  648. and they shall be my people.

  649. Therefore,

  650. go out from their midst

  651. and be separate from them,

  652. says the Lord,

  653. and touch no unclean thing,

  654. then I will welcome you

  655. and I will be a father to you

  656. and you shall be sons

  657. and daughters to me,

  658. says the Lord Almighty.

  659. Christians often use

  660. this passage

  661. to teach that Christians

  662. should not marry

  663. non-Christians,

  664. which is a fine

  665. application,

  666. but in its original context,

  667. this passage has more general,

  668. far-reaching applications.

  669. I think 1 Corinthians 6.39

  670. is an even better verse

  671. for that

  672. because it speaks

  673. of marrying

  674. only in the Lord.

  675. This passage

  676. is more general

  677. in that

  678. we dwell

  679. where Satan dwells,

  680. but light cannot

  681. have fellowship

  682. with darkness.

  683. Righteousness cannot

  684. have partnership

  685. with lawlessness.

  686. In what ways

  687. have we,

  688. as professing believers,

  689. failed to separate

  690. ourselves from the sinful world?

  691. In what ways

  692. have we commingled

  693. and compromised

  694. with the world,

  695. uncritically accepting

  696. the world's values

  697. and priorities

  698. as our own?

  699. Have we forgotten

  700. that God himself,

  701. the Holy One,

  702. dwells among us?

  703. He walks among us

  704. as our God.

  705. Have we,

  706. by our unholy activities

  707. and associations,

  708. solid,

  709. the name of Christ

  710. and brought him

  711. into contact

  712. with the contaminating

  713. worship of Belial

  714. and with the idols?

  715. I'm not saying

  716. that Christians

  717. should have nothing

  718. to do with the world

  719. or with unbelievers.

  720. If we did,

  721. then we wouldn't be able

  722. to love our neighbors

  723. as we love ourselves

  724. like Jesus commanded us

  725. to do,

  726. but Christians

  727. are to be distinct,

  728. set apart.

  729. It's what it means

  730. to be holy.

  731. Christians and non-Christians

  732. in some ways

  733. should be like oil

  734. and water

  735. that don't mix.

  736. They're in the same container.

  737. They dwell in the same place,

  738. but because water is,

  739. you guys are some chemists

  740. out here,

  741. polar molecule,

  742. right?

  743. Yeah, that's right.

  744. Bailey gives me a thumbs up.

  745. And while oil is non-polar,

  746. they cannot mix.

  747. Unfortunately,

  748. the church in Pergamum

  749. had begun to descend

  750. down the steps

  751. of compromise

  752. with idolatrous

  753. and immoral world,

  754. and we can see that

  755. in Jesus' critique

  756. in verses 14 to 15.

  757. But I have a few things

  758. against you.

  759. You have some there

  760. who hold the teaching

  761. of Balaam,

  762. who taught Balak

  763. to put some stumbling block

  764. before the sons of Israel

  765. so that they might eat food,

  766. sacrifice the idols,

  767. and practice sexual immorality.

  768. So also you have some

  769. who hold the teaching

  770. of the Nicolaitans.

  771. This brings me

  772. to my second point,

  773. the two holds

  774. of the church

  775. in Pergamum.

  776. The church in Pergamum

  777. did hold

  778. to the name of Jesus,

  779. but they also

  780. were holding on,

  781. sadly,

  782. to the teachings

  783. of Balaam

  784. and the teachings

  785. of the Nicolaitans.

  786. They were holding on

  787. to two things

  788. at the same time.

  789. Those are two exact

  790. same words in the Greek.

  791. Limping between two opinions

  792. like Israelites of old.

  793. They had some

  794. within their congregation

  795. who were holding

  796. the teaching of Balaam,

  797. which is parallel

  798. to holding the teaching

  799. of Nicolaitans.

  800. I think they're referring

  801. to one and the same thing.

  802. I think John

  803. is trying to explain

  804. what the teaching

  805. of Nicolaitans is like

  806. by comparing it

  807. to the Old Testament equivalent,

  808. which was the teaching

  809. of Balaam.

  810. Balaam was a seer,

  811. kind of like a prophet,

  812. but he was not God's prophet.

  813. He was a seer,

  814. but he did hear

  815. from the Lord

  816. and God did speak

  817. to him in some ways.

  818. He was a seer

  819. that was hired

  820. by Balak,

  821. Balak,

  822. king of Moab,

  823. and he was hired

  824. to curse the nation

  825. of Israel

  826. in Numbers

    Numbers 22 chapter mention

  827. chapters 22 to 24.

  828. Israel had been journeying

  829. through the wilderness

  830. and they demanded

  831. passage from the Amorites

  832. so that they could get

  833. to the land

  834. that God had promised

  835. to them,

  836. but the Amorites

  837. refused to grant them passage

  838. and instead came out

  839. to war against the Israelites

  840. and God helped

  841. and assisted the Israelites

  842. so they defeated

  843. the Amorites

  844. and now they're on the edge

  845. of Moabite territory

  846. and here are the Moabites

  847. and Balak,

  848. king of Moab,

  849. looking out upon

  850. the vast population

  851. of Israel

  852. right on their door,

  853. right at their door

  854. and they're scared.

  855. He says that they had,

  856. were filled with dread

  857. and great dread of Israel

  858. and overcome

  859. with fear of them

  860. and so Balak

  861. is a sly king

  862. and he says,

  863. well, you know,

  864. I don't think it's smart

  865. to fight them in war.

  866. I'm gonna hire this seer

  867. to curse them

  868. and so he hires Balaam

  869. to curse them

  870. three times

  871. but Balaam protests,

  872. I cannot go beyond

  873. the word of the Lord

  874. to do either good

  875. or bad of my own will.

  876. What the Lord speaks,

  877. that I will speak.

  878. So Balaam is here

  879. recognizing that he actually

  880. has no power

  881. in and of himself

  882. to bless or curse anybody.

  883. It only happens

  884. if God does it

  885. and so he's saying

  886. that I can't curse them

  887. if God's saying

  888. bless them

  889. and so instead

  890. of cursing them

  891. three times,

  892. Balaam ends up

  893. blessing them

  894. which is amazing.

  895. So this is something

  896. that I think you should

  897. have great confidence

  898. about as God's people

  899. because nowadays

  900. a lot of people

  901. are into witchcraft

  902. and sorcery

  903. and other things

  904. and it doesn't matter

  905. how many times

  906. or how,

  907. what powerful witches

  908. try to put hexes

  909. on you

  910. or curse you,

  911. it will have

  912. zero effect

  913. upon the people

  914. of God

  915. because only

  916. when God blesses

  917. are you blessed

  918. and only when God

  919. curses

  920. are you cursed.

  921. As God told Abraham

  922. in Genesis 12, 3,

  923. I will bless

  924. those who bless you

  925. and him who dishonors you

  926. I will curse

  927. and in you

  928. all the families

  929. of the earth

  930. shall be blessed.

  931. So,

  932. then what's wrong

  933. with what Balaam did?

  934. He blessed God's people

  935. three times.

  936. See,

  937. that wasn't the end

  938. of the story.

  939. Balaam was a sly one.

  940. He realized

  941. that he was powerless

  942. to curse the Israelites

  943. but he really still

  944. wanted the riches

  945. that King Balaam

  946. was offering him.

  947. I really want

  948. my payday

  949. but I can't curse them.

  950. And so,

  951. he came up

  952. with a crafty plan

  953. because he was,

  954. as 2 Peter 2.15

  955. calls him,

  956. he was a man

  957. who loved gain

  958. from wrongdoing.

  959. So,

  960. he decided

  961. that he'd try

  962. a different tact

  963. and in Numbers 31.16

  964. Moses mentions

  965. that on Balaam,

  966. Balaam's advice,

  967. some Moabite woman

  968. caused the people

  969. of Israel

  970. to act treacherously

  971. against the Lord

  972. in the incident

  973. of Peor.

  974. And so,

  975. the plague came

  976. among the congregation

  977. of the Lord.

  978. The incident

  979. of Peor

  980. is told

  981. in Numbers 25

  982. where it says

  983. that when Israel

  984. was living in Shittim,

  985. the people began

  986. to whore

  987. with the daughters

  988. of Moab

  989. and these invited

  990. the people

  991. to the sacrifices

  992. of their gods

  993. and the people

  994. ate and bowed

  995. down to their gods

  996. so Israel

  997. yoked

  998. himself

  999. to Baal of Peor

  1000. and the anger

  1001. of the Lord

  1002. was kindled

  1003. against Israel.

  1004. So,

  1005. Balaam could not

  1006. curse the Israelites

  1007. directly

  1008. but he came up

  1009. with a plan

  1010. to make them

  1011. bring upon

  1012. the curse of God

  1013. upon themselves

  1014. through their idolatry

  1015. and sexual immorality.

  1016. He advised

  1017. these Moabite women

  1018. to go and seduce

  1019. the Israelites

  1020. and lead them

  1021. astray

  1022. into idolatrous

  1023. worship.

  1024. that's what

  1025. the Nicolaitans

  1026. were doing

  1027. to the church

  1028. in Pergamum.

  1029. They weren't

  1030. trying to convert

  1031. Christians

  1032. back to paganism.

  1033. Remember,

  1034. these are Christians

  1035. in Pergamum

  1036. like Antipas

  1037. who were faithful

  1038. unto death.

  1039. They're willing

  1040. to die

  1041. to hold fast

  1042. the name of Jesus.

  1043. They're not going

  1044. to be

  1045. just reject Jesus

  1046. and go

  1047. and follow the idols.

  1048. No,

  1049. but instead

  1050. of that

  1051. they tried

  1052. a different tack

  1053. more subtle

  1054. form of compromise

  1055. with idolatry

  1056. and sexual immorality.

  1057. They were teaching

  1058. the church

  1059. in Pergamum

  1060. that they can

  1061. eat food

  1062. sacrificed to idols

  1063. and practice

  1064. sexual immorality.

  1065. Now,

  1066. this is not speaking

  1067. of eating food

  1068. that was once

  1069. sacrificed to an idol

1070. but is now being sold

  1071. in the marketplace.

  1072. Paul tells us

1073. that we can eat that

  1074. with a clear conscience

  1075. in 1 Corinthians 8

  1076. but in 1 Corinthians 10

  1077. Paul himself warns

  1078. about actually

  1079. partaking in

  1080. the sacrifices

  1081. themselves

  1082. and then eating

  1083. food sacrificed

  1084. to idols there

  1085. because he says

  1086. to do so

  1087. is to partake

  1088. in the table

  1089. of demons

  1090. because demons

  1091. are beyond

  1092. these idolatrous

  1093. sacrifices.

  1094. A typical

  1095. Roman trade guild

  1096. festival involved

  1097. worshipping

  1098. the patron deities

  1099. through the sacrifices

  1100. and historical evidence

  1101. suggests that

  1102. many of these feasts

  1103. devolved into

  1104. sexual orgies

  1105. characterized by

  1106. excessive drinking

  1107. and with the

  1108. decrease in inhibition

  1109. and self-control

  1110. sexual promiscuity.

  1111. The Nicolaitans

  1112. were preaching

  1113. the message

  1114. of compromise

  1115. like this.

  1116. Oh no,

  1117. you don't have

  1118. to reject Jesus.

  1119. It's okay

  1120. if we participate

  1121. in these sacrifices

  1122. and feasts.

  1123. We can do so

  1124. as Christians.

  1125. Don't we all know

  1126. that these idols

  1127. are nothing at all?

  1128. This is just

  1129. Roman tradition.

  1130. They're more cultural

  1131. than religious.

  1132. It's what all Romans

  1133. do.

  1134. And don't we

  1135. benefit from

  1136. the patronage

  1137. of Caesar,

  1138. our king?

  1139. What's the harm

  1140. in paying him

  1141. some homage

  1142. and bowing before him?

  1143. We know that

  1144. he's only human.

  1145. Just remember that

  1146. in your heart

  1147. when you are

  1148. participating

  1149. in that worship.

  1150. Please,

  1151. we don't need

  1152. to be so legalistic

  1153. about abstaining

  1154. from these.

  1155. Just be faithful

  1156. to the Lord Jesus

  1157. in your heart.

  1158. What's the big deal

  1159. about bowing down

  1160. before these pagan gods

  1161. whom we know

  1162. are nothing but statues?

  1163. Empty gesture.

  1164. Don't lose sleep

  1165. over it.

  1166. But what about

  1167. the sexual immorality?

  1168. They would say,

  1169. oh,

  1170. don't worry about it.

  1171. That's just

  1172. what Romans do.

  1173. When in Rome,

1174. do as the Romans do.

  1175. You know what

  1176. famous orator

  1177. Demosthenes

  1178. once said

  1179. a few centuries ago?

  1180. We keep prostitutes

  1181. for pleasure.

  1182. We keep mistresses

  1183. for the day-to-day

  1184. needs of the body.

  1185. We keep wives

  1186. for the beginning

  1187. of children

  1188. and for the faithful

  1189. guardianship

  1190. of our homes.

  1191. You're not being

  1192. unfaithful to your wife

1193. as long as you don't

  1194. leave her for those

  1195. other women.

  1196. It's just to satisfy

  1197. our bodily desires,

  1198. our fleshly desires.

  1199. What we do

  1200. with our bodies

  1201. don't affect our souls.

  1202. Sexual immorality

  1203. doesn't affect

  1204. your union with Christ,

  1205. does it?

  1206. Hey,

  1207. but if you really

1208. want to be a prude

  1209. about it,

  1210. forget it.

  1211. You don't have to

  1212. actually participate

  1213. in the sexual immorality.

  1214. Just watch it.

1215. Just go to the feast.

  1216. Just watch it.

  1217. You don't have to

  1218. do it yourself.

  1219. Can you hear

  1220. the voices,

  1221. the echoes

  1222. of these seductive

  1223. voices of the

  1224. Nicolaitans

  1225. in our day?

  1226. Are they?

  1227. Are they?

  1228. Are they?

  1229. Are they?

  1230. Are they?

  1231. Are they?

  1232. Are they?

  1233. Are they?

  1234. Are they?

  1235. Are they?

1236. If you are a Christian

  1237. convert from a

  1238. thoroughly religious

  1239. culture,

  1240. whether it's Islamic,

  1241. Buddhist,

  1242. or Hindu,

  1243. there's tremendous

  1244. pressure to participate

  1245. in traditional family

  1246. sacrifices that are

  1247. idolatrous.

  1248. I still remember

  1249. from my childhood

  1250. watching my parents

  1251. get snubbed

  1252. by their own

  1253. blood brothers

  1254. and sisters

  1255. for refusing

  1256. to bow down

  1257. to ancestor worship.

  1258. They would say,

  1259. hey,

  1260. we're Christians too.

  1261. You're not the only

  1262. Christian here.

  1263. you can bow down

  1264. to them,

  1265. serve them food,

  1266. just honoring them.

  1267. Don't be mistaken.

  1268. Demons are involved

  1269. in every idolatrous feast.

  1270. And you cannot partake

1271. of the table of the Lord

  1272. and of the table

  1273. of demons.

  1274. This could happen

  1275. even in our

  1276. Western culture

  1277. as well.

  1278. I think political

  1279. idolatry is not

  1280. uncommon in the

  1281. Western world.

  1282. Are you so loyal

  1283. to your favorite

  1284. politician

  1285. or so patriotic

  1286. about your country,

  1287. whether that was

  1288. the Roman Empire

  1289. in the Church of

  1290. Pergamum days

  1291. or the United States

  1292. of America,

  1293. that you would make

  1294. spiritual and moral

  1295. compromises

  1296. in order to support

  1297. them?

  1298. The voices of the

  1299. Nicolaitans are even

  1300. more obvious in terms

  1301. of sexual immorality

  1302. in our culture.

  1303. No sex before marriage?

  1304. How quaint

  1305. and old-fashioned.

  1306. How will you know

  1307. that you two are

  1308. compatible if you don't

  1309. cohabit for a while

  1310. before marriage?

  1311. Homosexuality?

  1312. Well, the Bible

  1313. condemns homosexual

  1314. abuse, but when

  1315. it's consensual and

  1316. monogamous homosexual

  1317. relationship, it's

  1318. totally sanctioned by

  1319. the Bible.

  1320. I've heard Christian

  1321. teachers teach that

  1322. very thing with my

  1323. own ears.

  1324. And part of their

  1325. persuasiveness lies in

  1326. the fact that they

  1327. actually believe

  1328. themselves to be

  1329. right.

  1330. They're sincere.

  1331. And maybe they

  1332. even think they're

  1333. being compassionate.

  1334. But being convinced

1335. that you are right is

1336. not the same thing as

  1337. being right.

1338. Just two weeks ago, I

  1339. read a Christianity

  1340. Today article about a

  1341. prominent pastor whose

  1342. network of churches

  1343. ministers to 60,000

  1344. people on a weekly

  1345. basis.

  1346. And he hosted a

  1347. conference that was

  1348. intended, quote, for

  1349. parents of LGBTQ plus

  1350. children and for

  1351. ministry leaders

  1352. looking to discover

  1353. ways to support

  1354. parents and LGBTQ plus

  1355. children in their

  1356. churches.

  1357. That sounds pretty

  1358. harmless on the

  1359. surface, but the

  1360. problem was the

  1361. conference featured

  1362. speakers who are

  1363. either currently in

  1364. same-sex relationship

  1365. or are supportive of

  1366. those who are.

1367. This is all the more

  1368. confusing because this

  1369. pastor insists that he

  1370. still holds the

  1371. traditional biblical

  1372. teaching that marriage

1373. is between a man and

1374. a woman and that any

  1375. other sexual union is

  1376. sinful.

1377. But then he goes on to

  1378. say, well, that

  1379. chastity for someone who

  1380. has same-sex attraction

  1381. is, quote, not

  1382. sustainable.

  1383. And that same-sex

  1384. marriage is the next

  1385. best option.

1386. This is exactly like the

  1387. teaching of the

  1388. Nicolaitans.

  1389. We have brothers and

  1390. sisters in our church

  1391. who struggle with

  1392. same-sex attraction,

  1393. attraction.

  1394. But because they know

  1395. that such relationships

  1396. do not fulfill God's

  1397. good design for them,

  1398. they have either managed

1399. to be in a heterosexual

  1400. or wholesome intergendered

  1401. marriages, or they have

  1402. taken a vow of

  1403. celibacy.

1404. Sam Albury is a Christian

1405. author who has taken such

1406. a vow of celibacy because

  1407. he struggles with same-sex

  1408. attraction.

1409. And this is what he had

  1410. to say about that

  1411. conference.

1412. He says, quote, I have

  1413. always been single.

1414. On the whole, it has been

  1415. deeply joyous.

1416. But I am not immune from

  1417. temptation.

  1418. And when any leader

  1419. suggests to me that

  1420. chaste obedience to

  1421. Christ in singleness is

  1422. not sustainable, he is

  1423. saying the very same

1424. thing to me that the

  1425. devil says.

  1426. If you have discerning

1427. ears, you can hear the

  1428. voices of the

  1429. Nicolaitans everywhere.

1430. Well, fine, if you don't

  1431. really want to participate

1432. in any of this, more

1433. strength to you, but it's

1434. surely fine to just observe

  1435. sexual immorality, right?

  1436. Porn?

1437. What harm does that do?

  1438. It doesn't hurt anybody.

  1439. It doesn't hurt anybody.

  1440. R-rated movies with

  1441. explicit scenes, it's

  1442. art.

  1443. It's just entertainment.

  1444. Brothers and sisters,

  1445. don't be deluded.

  1446. Our culture worships

  1447. sex.

  1448. Our culture worships

  1449. sex.

  1450. Everywhere it teaches us

  1451. without sex like that,

  1452. without sex like this,

1453. you will never have a

  1454. fulfilling life, and

  1455. that's a lie.

  1456. And we uncritically

  1457. imbibe that message all

  1458. day long.

  1459. When we tolerate the

  1460. teachings of the

  1461. Nicolaitans, we make

  1462. subtle compromises that

  1463. threaten to turn our

  1464. hearts away from God.

  1465. And this is important.

  1466. The church in Pergamum

  1467. handled overt opposition

  1468. really well.

  1469. They died for the

  1470. faith.

  1471. They did not handle

  1472. subtle seduction

  1473. very well.

1474. We need to be vigilant

  1475. against both.

  1476. So Jesus commands them

  1477. in verse 16,

  1478. therefore repent.

1479. If not, I will come to

1480. you soon and war against

1481. them with the sword of my

  1482. mouth.

  1483. Notice the change in

  1484. personal pronouns there in

  1485. verse 16.

1486. I will come to you, you

1487. all, all the people in

1488. church in Pergamum, and he

1489. will war against them, not

1490. the whole church, but the

  1491. Nicolaitans and those who

  1492. follow their teaching.

  1493. But the whole church

  1494. needs to repent of

  1495. tolerating the false

  1496. teachings of the

  1497. Nicolaitans among their

  1498. midst.

  1499. Notice that Jesus'

  1500. critique of the church

  1501. in Pergamum doesn't say

  1502. that they are actually

  1503. participating in these

  1504. idolatrous feasts yet,

  1505. and actually participating

  1506. in sexual immorality yet,

1507. as we'll see in the next

  1508. passage, the church in

  1509. Thyatira is actually doing

  1510. those things actively.

1511. Right now, the church in

  1512. Pergamum is merely holding

1513. fast to the teaching of

  1514. the Nicolaitans.

  1515. They're tolerating false

1516. teachers in their midst who

1517. say that these things are

  1518. okay.

  1519. They're one step further

  1520. removed, but they're still

  1521. very close.

  1522. But Jesus doesn't merely

  1523. threaten punishment for their

  1524. sins.

  1525. He also promises two

  1526. wonderful gifts for those

  1527. who conquer.

  1528. In verse 17,

  1529. The manna recalls Israel's

  1530. journey through the

1531. wilderness, so it fits with

1532. that allusion to the story

  1533. of Balak and Balaam.

  1534. And during the wilderness

1535. journey, God fed them with

1536. bread from heaven by raining

1537. manna to provide for them.

  1538. The Israelites should have

  1539. satisfied themselves with

1540. God's bread from heaven with

  1541. manna, but instead, the

  1542. Israelites whored after the

1543. Moabite woman and engaged in

1544. sexual immorality and ate at

  1545. their pagan idolatrous feasts.

  1546. They ate food, sacrificed

  1547. to idols.

1548. But Jesus promises here, if you

1549. hold fast and if you maintain

1550. yourself a distinct identity as

1551. Christians and you do not

1552. compromise and you endure to

1553. the end, you will eat the

  1554. hidden manna.

  1555. It's hidden because it's not

  1556. fully revealed yet, which

1557. will be at the wedding feast

1558. of the lamb that we'll get to

  1559. partake in.

  1560. There's a feast awaiting you,

1561. so don't settle for these

  1562. inferior counterfeit feasts of

  1563. idolatry.

  1564. That's the first gift.

1565. The second gift is a white

1566. stone with a new name written

1567. on the stone that no one

1568. knows except the one who

  1569. receives it.

  1570. There are several possible

  1571. historical and biblical

1572. associations that help us make

1573. the sense of what this white

1574. stone is, and they are not

  1575. necessarily mutually exclusive,

  1576. these options.

1577. The first is that the jurors in

1578. Rome, when they were making a

  1579. judgment, indicated using a

1580. white stone or a black stone.

1581. They would hold up the black

1582. stone if they wanted to say

1583. that this person is guilty.

1584. They would hold up the white

1585. stone if they wanted to say

  1586. this person is innocent.

1587. And so Jesus is assuring them,

1588. even when your society holds up

1589. the black stone and condemns you

1590. to death for your faith in

1591. Jesus, I will give you the white

  1592. stone.

1593. Say that you are righteous,

1594. you are justified, and that you

1595. belong in paradise with me.

1596. A second possible association is

1597. that stones of various colors were

1598. used for admission to public

1599. celebrations like the feasts that

1600. we have just been talking about.

1601. Sometimes you'd have to have the

  1602. stone.

1603. It's basically like your ticket,

1604. your invitation to the feast, and

1605. you'd have to show it in order to

  1606. enter.

1607. And Jesus is saying, you might be

1608. excluded, you might not go to these

1609. pagan feasts, but you will have the

1610. white stone to enter into the eternal

1611. feast of the Lamb of God.

  1612. So don't be disheartened.

1613. A third possible connection is Exodus

  1614. 28-21, where Israel's high priest on

1615. the ephod, on the shoulder of the

1616. ephod, and on his breastpiece,

1617. wears precious stones with the names

1618. of the tribes of Israel written on

  1619. them.

1620. The priests representing the people of

1621. God before the presence of God on his

1622. heart, bearing them on his shoulders.

1623. I think if that's the association, then

1624. I think it's fulfilled here in Jesus

  1625. in a greater way, because I don't think

1626. the new name written on the stone that

1627. no one knows except the one who receives

  1628. it, I don't think that's our name

  1629. primarily.

1630. Jesus promises in Revelation 3-12, the

1631. one who conquers, I will make him a

1632. pillar in the temple of my God.

1633. Never shall he go out of it, and I will

1634. write on him the name of my God.

1635. In the name of the city of my God, the

1636. new Jerusalem, which comes down from my

1637. God out of heaven, and my own new name.

1638. It also says in Revelation 14-1 that the

  1639. 144,000, which is a symbolic number

1640. representing all of God's chosen people,

1641. it says that they had Jesus' name and the

1642. Father's name written on their foreheads.

  1643. In Revelation 19-11-16, we're told that

1644. Jesus has a name written that no one knows

  1645. but himself.

1646. But then in the following verses, it tells

1647. us exactly what the name is.

1648. The name by which he is called is the

  1649. word of God.

1650. A name written is king of kings and lord of

  1651. lords.

  1652. So I don't think it's our name primarily, I

  1653. think it's Jesus' name.

1654. So then why is it, how is it that no one

  1655. knows but him?

1656. Because it's this already but not yet paradox

1657. that we see all throughout the New Testament.

1658. We already have God's name.

1659. We already have the name of Jesus on us,

1660. but it's not yet fulfilled in its fullness.

1661. We'll know him like we have never known him

  1662. before when Christ returns.

1663. And we'll know the preciousness of his name like

1664. we have never known before when we receive the

1665. white stone with the name on it that no one knows

  1666. but himself.

1667. And how intimate is that?

  1668. That's a fellowship.

1669. So when someone knows you by name, you know them

  1670. intimately.

  1671. Right?

1672. Someone knows you by name.

  1673. They know you personally.

1674. When Jesus says, I give you a stone with a new name

1675. on it that no one knows but me.

1676. I impart to you something I give to no one else.

1677. I reveal myself to you in a way I haven't to anyone

  1678. else.

1679. Personally, you belong to me.

  1680. Jesus and his church.

  1681. That's the intimate promise.

  1682. My name.

1683. Because our name wouldn't do, would it?

1684. Our names are riddled with pride, with guilt, with shame.

1685. Haven't we all in various ways compromised with the sinful world?

1686. Haven't we sinned against our God?

1687. Haven't we participated in idolatrous feasts and feasted

1688. at our eyes on sin and immorality?

1689. Haven't we committed sexual immorality?

1690. What good a white stone with our name on it do to give us entry

1691. into the wedding feast of the Lamb?

1692. But Jesus died for our sins on the cross.

  1693. Jesus.

1694. There's no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must

  1695. be.

  1696. That name.

1697. That precious name of Jesus.

  1698. Yes.

1699. And when you confessed your sins and you believed in Jesus and you

1700. were baptized, signifying the cleansing of all your sins,

1701. washing away all your guilt and shame, what name were you given?

1702. You were baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of

  1703. the Holy Spirit.

  1704. That's your name.

  1705. I am a Christian.

  1706. Christian.

1707. No, that stone will not say, Sean, Christian, Christ, King of kings,

1708. Lord of lords, the Lion of Judah, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin

  1709. of the world.

1710. That precious, ineffable, eternal name will be on that stone that we

1711. will receive if we endure.

  1712. So let's hold on.

  1713. Let's pray.

  1714. Yes, Father.

1715. Father, my name is one that's full of shame and guilt.

1716. But, Lord, your name is holy.

  1717. Your name is pure.

  1718. Your name is righteous.

1719. Thank you for putting your name on us.

1720. Help us to persevere with vigilance so that we do not tolerate false

1721. teaching in our midst, but instead maintain our distinct set-apart

1722. identity as Christians, help us to stand in awe of you and live with holy fear,

1723. reverence for the one who has the two-sharp, two-edged sword in his mouth.

1724. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1725. Amen.
