  1. 've been doing a major doctrinal study

  2. in Sunday school. So now we're going to

  3. do it in Sunday evening message

  4. as well. We've looked at the word of

  5. God, what it is, where it come from, its

  6. importance in our lives,

  7. and we've been looking at, you know,

  8. it's that it's the word of God. You you

  9. guys go to the Bible church, that's not

  10. news for you.

  11. But some people don't know that you

  12. can't have a Christian life without the

  13. word of God. You can't become a

  14. Christian without the word of God. It

  15. plays such an important part. And then

  16. from there, learning who God is. And

  17. that's so important for us.

  18. And we'll eventually get to man if the

  19. Lord carries. And we're going to find

  20. out just how sinful we are. But right

  21. now we were seeing how great and

  22. glorious God is. And we've been looking

  23. at the Father.

  24. We spent several messages on God the

  25. Father. We sent spent several messages

  26. on God the Holy Spirit.

  27. I think the Holy Spirit gets ignored.

  28. Um, you know, and I can be guilty of

  29. that myself.

  30. So, we were able to get caught up on on

  31. the Holy Spirit. We had several messages

  32. on him. He's a person.

  33. God, the Godhead. From the Godhead come

  34. the Father, the Son, and the Holy

  35. Spirit. You know, that's who they are.

  36. They reveal themsel to us. We don't

  37. figure them out. And the only way we can

  38. understand them is the provision God has

  39. made with his word.

  40. And it's sufficient. So, we don't need

  41. anything else.

  42. It's not saying that we just shut

  43. everything else out, but when we rank

  44. things in importance, you know, it's

  45. what God said that matters. Yes,

  46. >> he's a person.

  47. That's a and and the reason we want to

  48. say that is we're reducing God to what

  49. we understand.

  50. And what we understand is that is, you

  51. know, we're we're persons. We're made in

  52. the image of God,

  53. you know, and your your body, soul, and

  54. spirit as a human being. And we're going

  55. to spend some time on on humanity and

  56. those things, and they're important for

  57. us to know. But when it comes to God,

  58. the Bible says God is a spirit, but the

  59. Bible also says God is a person.

  60. because it's a person that has a

  61. personality. So that's where

  62. we see um the Godhead in represented as

  63. the father, the son, and the holy

  64. spirit. And there are verses that

  65. you know I can show you a verse where it

  66. says that the father raised Jesus from

  67. the dead. This is this is one little

  68. thing to help me understand some of

  69. these things that God the Father raised

  70. the Son. I can show you where Jesus

  71. said, "I'll raise myself."

  72. And I can show you where the Bible says

  73. the Holy Spirit raised Jesus from the

  74. dead.

  75. So God, the Godhead is made up of three

  76. persons. The Father, Son, and the Holy

  77. Spirit. And we did some messages on the

  78. Trinity and we may do some more. Uh God

  79. is just an incredible subject. There's

  80. just so much here

  81. and you know we've been looking at you

  82. know Jesus

  83. in the last few messages and we're

  84. probably going to be on him for a while.

  85. There's a lot here

  86. and it's so important for us to to study

  87. him because he he's as we said this

  88. morning there's he's the greatest

  89. example there ever was. He's the

  90. greatest teacher there ever was. He's

  91. the greatest lover of our souls as there

  92. ever was.

  93. and he taught his own people, you know,

  94. and and that's where in John, we we saw

  95. where John the Baptist handed Jesus off

  96. to the nation of Israel and pointed and

  97. said, "Here he is, the lamb of God that

  98. taketh away the sin of the world."

  99. And we saw this morning that Jesus is

  100. sinless.

  101. He cannot sin.

  102. He's God.

  103. And we talked about those things this

  104. morning. And some of that's going to

  105. come up tonight as well. But I'm in

  106. Matthew chapter 4

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  107. and we want to rely on what the word of

  108. God says about these things. We had the

  109. message on the two baptisms of Jesus. We

  110. had the one, you know, on his water

  111. baptism. you know, why was Jesus

  112. baptized? I mean, that's a good

  113. question.

  114. And Jesus is the one that answered it. I

  115. didn't, you know, I didn't answer it for

  116. him. He answered it right in the word of

  117. God.

  118. So, that's how important these things

  119. are. I mean, there's never a greater man

  120. and never a greater teacher

  121. than him.

  122. So right after his baptism, if you

  123. familiar with your Bibles and him, then

  124. you know here in Matthew 4 and verse one

  125. is where we want to begin.

  126. And Matthew lets us know

  127. that, you know, that the devil didn't

  128. come after Jesus or or, you know, the

  129. Jes,

  130. you know, find Jesus and and come after

  131. him. He wasn't in control of this.

  132. Jesus who is God is in control of this.

  133. And he says here then was Jesus led up

  134. by the spirit to the wilderness to be

  135. tested by the devil. So that's what's

  136. going on here. We have the son of God

  137. who is led by the spirit. You see there

  138. even you know the the the Holy Spirit

  139. was in Jesus

  140. to help him with his humanity.

  141. And when he had fasted 40 days and 40

  142. nights, he was hungry. And when the

  143. tempter came to him,

  144. you know, notice who initiated this.

  145. Jesus was led by the spirit into the

  146. wilderness to be tested by the devil. It

  147. doesn't say the devil come to test Jesus

  148. and, you know, got him unawares or

  149. anything like that.

  150. I mean, Jesus is in absolute control of

  151. himself

  152. and what's going on here. And he goes

  153. into the wilderness

  154. to let the devil come and test him.

  155. And the devil is the tempter. And he

  156. came to him and he said, "If you be the

  157. son of God, command that these stones be

  158. made to bread." So the tempter comes and

  159. the tempter tempts. And Jesus is in the

  160. wilderness. Now turn back to Job chapter

    Job 1 chapter mention

  161. 1

  162. because this is something we need to

  163. know

  164. about the devil. You know some people

  165. think that you know the devil is God's

  166. equal

  167. or you know he's not.

  168. God's the creator Satan is a creature

  169. and he his demise we can find in the

  170. Bible. The Bible has nothing good to say

  171. about Satan.

  172. And here in Job, we can see here sort of

  173. what's going on with Jesus.

  174. And in Job chapter 1

    Job 1 chapter mention

  175. and verse uh six, the days were come

  176. when God came and presented themselves

  177. before the Lord and Satan came among

  178. them.

  179. He was a he's a fallen angel.

  180. Um, he initiated sin in the universe.

  181. That's the only thing we can give him

  182. credit for.

  183. He's done nothing else.

  184. And verse four, and the Lord said to

  185. Satan, don't try to talk to him, but God

  186. can.

  187. From which do you come? And Satan

  188. answered, Lord, from going to and fro

  189. throughout the earth and walking up and

  190. down in it. So, it's clear here that

  191. he's on the earth. Um, he's been kicked

  192. out of heaven and took a third of the

  193. angels with him, but we're looking at

  194. his tempting Jesus. And, and his

  195. tempting Job here will help us

  196. understand what's going on with Jesus.

  197. And Satan answered the Lord and said,

  198. "Does Job fear God for nothing? Hast

  199. thou not made a hedge about him,

  200. about his house, about all that he has

  201. on every side, that thou may bless the

  202. work of his hands, and the substance

  203. of the land, and put forth your hand

  204. now, touch all that he has, and uh he

  205. will curse thee to your face." And the

  206. Lord said to Satan, "Behold all that he

  207. has and is in your power. only let upon

  208. himself

  209. put not forth thine hand and Satan went

  210. from the presence of the Lord. Now this

  211. is the book of Job is the oldest book in

  212. the Bible and and this was in ancient

  213. times. This was after the fall and Satan

  214. got kicked out of heaven. We know more

  215. about Satan now because of the New

  216. Testament,

  217. who he is and what he's doing. But here

  218. you got to see that he can do nothing

  219. unless God lets him.

  220. So Satan is not God's equal any in any

  221. way. He's a creature. Satan is a fallen

  222. sinful creature, evil creature. God is

  223. holy, just, and good.

  224. And here we see God taking care of Job.

  225. And there's a hedge about him. I like

  226. that. There's a hedge about him. So the

  227. devil can do nothing to Job unless God

  228. oes it.

  229. That's important for our theology.

  230. You know, we just the Psalm 23, I will

  231. fear no evil.

  232. So don't fear evil. Don't fear the

  233. devil. Don't fear him. Jesus said, I'll

  234. tell you who you should fear. It's God.

  235. And he was talking about

  236. his father. So turn back to Matthew. So

  237. in a similar way,

  238. you know, God permitted the testing of

  239. Job. God permits the testing of his son.

  240. And that's what we see going on here. So

  241. Jesus is led by the spirit. He's full of

  242. the Holy Spirit.

  243. And he has reached the age of maturity.

  244. He We saw his earlier ministries this

  245. morning. we saw some of the things he

  246. was involved with. But when he comes to

  247. to to John to be baptized,

  248. it's it's told us in the scripture that

  249. he was 30 years old.

  250. So, you know, we think of maturity maybe

  251. at 18

  252. and I don't not so sure about that. I

  253. didn't do very well in my 20s.

  254. That's okay. It brought me to the Lord.

  255. But Jesus is fully matured. He's a

  256. physically, mentally, spiritually,

  257. um, he is the son of God, the holy son

  258. of God. And, you know, we've seen

  259. leading up to this, how everyone knew

  260. that, you know, he he didn't come and

  261. live on Gilligan's Island. As I said

  262. this morning, he come to Jerusalem. He

  263. lived among the Jews. the very rules

  264. that he made up

  265. and he lived them to a per to

  266. perfection.

  267. And we saw in chapter 2 that this was

  268. fulfilled, fulfilled, fulfilled.

  269. So everybody knew who Jesus was. Herod

  270. tried to kill him.

  271. The wise men came through and you know

  272. they they brought him gifts. They

  273. worshiped him. So Jesus didn't become

  274. God. He's always been God. He was God

  275. when he was in heaven. He was God for

  276. all eternity past and he he became a man

  277. come to earth. A perfect man,

  278. a sinless man, a holy man.

  279. So what is Satan's goal here?

  280. You know the the

  281. you know he knows

  282. he knows who he is.

  283. Herod knew who Jesus was. The chief

  284. priests knew who Jesus was. The Jews

  285. knew who Jesus was. Mary knew who Jesus

  286. was. Joseph knew who Jesus was.

  287. So, you know, and then, you know, John

  288. the Baptist at the age of 30, then John

  289. hands it off. Remember, John said, "I

  290. must decrease and he must increase." And

  291. that's how

  292. this happened because you know once he's

  293. once Jesus is baptized and he begins his

  294. ministry

  295. and the answer to why Jesus was baptized

  296. is there in verse 17

  297. to please his father.

  298. That's why Jesus was baptized

  299. to please his father. And we're going to

  300. talk about that tonight. that was, you

  301. know, what he set out to do when he left

  302. heaven.

  303. Um, we had plenty of verses on that. And

  304. turn back to Psalm

  305. 2

  306. and this is what we there's numerous

  307. verses that we could turn to, but we're

  308. going to turn to this one.

  309. Help us see

  310. You know, God,

  311. he's a great planner. We're going to

  312. we're going to have a message on the on

  313. the decrees of God.

  314. They're incredible.

  315. God is a great planner.

  316. And you know, nothing takes God by

  317. surprise. He knows everything. He's He's

  318. not learned anything.

  319. But here in Psalm two, this sort of

  320. helps us see, you know, the big picture.

  321. You know, Satan decided to rebel in sin

  322. and take a bunch of the angels with him.

  323. Well, well, God has a plan

  324. to take back the universe.

  325. And here it is in verse two or excuse me

  326. verse one he says why do the nations

  327. rage the people imagine a vain thing.

  328. The kings of earth shut themselves and

  329. the rulers take counsel together against

  330. the Lord and against his anointing

  331. anointing. The world still hates God.

  332. The world still hates Christ.

  333. You know that's proof that he's the real

  334. God.

  335. And he they say, "Let us break their

  336. bands of sunder and cast away their

  337. cords from us." Well, men are saying

  338. that I think that was they must have got

  339. it from the devil cuz he he was sort of

  340. the ring leader and the initiator of

  341. this rebellion against God.

  342. I guess you think God's nervous. What am

  343. I going to do? He already has a plan and

  344. he executes it perfectly.

  345. And he who sets in the heavens shall

  346. laugh, and the Lord will have them in

  347. derision.

  348. Then shall he speak unto them in his

  349. wrath. He'll vex them in his great

  350. displeasure. There's hell in the Old

  351. Testament, way before Jesus ever come to

  352. earth. Yet have I set who my king

  353. upon my holy hill in Zion. This is a

  354. messianic psalm. It's just incredible

  355. everything this says.

  356. And I will declare the decree.

  357. And the Lord said to me, "Thou art my

  358. son. This day have I begotten thee."

  359. Here in the Old Testament, God says, "I

  360. I've got a son and I'm going to send him

  361. to earth. He's going to be begotten."

  362. And then he's going to say, "This is the

  363. son, the king, the anointed one, the

  364. Christ, the Messiah."

  365. He says, "Ask of me, and I will give

  366. thee the nations for your inheritance,

  367. and the uttermost parts of the earth

  368. for your possession.

  369. Thou shalt break them with a rod of

  370. iron. Thou shalt dash them in pieces

  371. like a potter's vessel."

  372. This is God.

  373. God has a, you know, holy side. God God

  374. is gracious. God is kind. God is

  375. merciful. But but God is also holy. He

  376. just can't look away

  377. from iniquity.

  378. So be wise.

  379. Get to know this God while you have

  380. time.

  381. And Jesus said, "Learn of me."

  382. And and this the same person, God don't

  383. God doesn't have to send two or three

  384. different people here, you know, God, we

  385. didn't God the Father didn't have to

  386. become a human. The Holy Spirit didn't

  387. have to become a human, but Jesus did.

  388. And that's enough. He'll fix all this.

  389. That's what this psalm is about.

  390. Oh you kings, be instructed, you judges

  391. of the earth.

  392. Serve the Lord with fear and rejoicing

  393. and trembling and kiss the sun. You know

  394. that's you know that this is this says

  395. uh there's more to this

  396. than a kiss. I mean that's you know

  397. that's the way we should think of it.

  398. But we're face to face with with Jesus.

  399. Jesus is the face of God. You know,

  400. there are other psalms and other verses

  401. that say that

  402. he's God.

  403. So when he's born in Bethlehem, he

  404. doesn't become God. He's already God.

  405. He's already the son. He's already the

  406. one who is going to do his father's

  407. will.

  408. Look in verse eight. He remember he

  409. said, "Ask of me and I'll give you thee

  410. the nations back."

  411. And that's what he's done.

  412. now that he's died and he's paid for our

  413. sins. So, you know, this is his first

  414. test from Satan. Um, go to Psalm 145.

  415. Psalm 145

  416. and verse 16.

  417. This,

  418. you know,

  419. Jesus dependence upon his father. It's

  420. amazing.

  421. It's absolutely amazing.

  422. And you know, that's what Satan is

  423. after,

  424. that loyalty

  425. to God the Father.

  426. And here the Psalm says, you open your

  427. hand, you satisfy the desire of every

  428. living thing.

  429. The Lord is righteous in all his ways,

  430. holy in all of his works. And that's

  431. concludes Jesus. That is Jesus. So both

  432. of them are holy. The father, the son,

  433. and the holy spirit. Spirit obviously.

  434. Now let's go look at Luke's account of

  435. this. Luke 4.

  436. So we have in heaven and we have in

  437. eternity past a god who has planned this

  438. out sending his son as our redeemer

  439. and everybody all the humans knew who he

  440. was when he got here and the devil did

  441. too.

  442. James tells us that about the devil. The

  443. devil believes in God. He's not an

  444. atheist.

  445. And here we have in Luke in chapter 4

  446. in verse one,

  447. similar to what Matthew said.

  448. And Jesus being full of the Holy Spirit

  449. returned from the Jordan and he was led

  450. by the spirit into the wilderness. So

  451. he's in control of this, not the devil.

  452. He's the sovereign Lord, not the devil.

  453. He's here to do his father's will,

  454. not listen to the devil.

  455. And that's the test here. So 40 days.

  456. And by the way, the word the word

  457. tested, I mean, we have the word

  458. tempted,

  459. you know, and it's, you know, I'm

  460. tempted

  461. dead fly. So when I, you know, we're

  462. tempted to do things that we ought not

  463. do. So we know what that is. and and you

  464. know, we we either pass or fail. You

  465. know, it's pretty simple. We're humans

  466. and there's a lot of failure, but we can

  467. we can pass if we look to Jesus. And

  468. that's what we have in the word of God

  469. is him

  470. um there to help us

  471. and 40 days being tested by the devil.

  472. So, this is a month and 10 days.

  473. Jesus ate nothing.

  474. I've never went that long without food.

  475. Um, but I can imagine how hungry as a

  476. man he was.

  477. And when it ended, he afterwards was

  478. hungry.

  479. And the devil said to him, then notice

  480. what the devil said.

  481. He didn't say, "Are you hungry?" That's

  482. obvious. His question is if you be the

  483. son of God. That's his question.

  484. That's his attack. That's his tempting.

  485. That's his testing is to get Jesus the

  486. man to depart

  487. from Jesus the divine being and join the

  488. earth and join the sinners and join the

  489. fallen angels and join in the evil

  490. that he has led.

  491. Why don't you just turn this stone and

  492. make it bread?

  493. Jesus could have done that without even

  494. blinking.

  495. But that's the devil's temp temptation

  496. here. That's the devil's testing of him

  497. here. Why don't you just, you know, it's

  498. just bread. Well, it's not just bread.

  499. If he does this, he's the son of God.

  500. He's going to be leaving his father's

  501. will.

  502. And we know Jesus said, "I do always

  503. those things that please my father."

  504. This would not have pleased his father.

  505. And if we go back to his baptism,

  506. remember in his baptism, that's what he

  507. said. I did this to please my father.

  508. I'm in the ministry to please my father.

  509. I'm in Israel to please my father.

  510. So any question we have about Jesus

  511. ministry, you know me, it's like why is

  512. it three and a half years? What you know

  513. is there some what am I missing? I'm not

  514. missing anything. It's to please the

  515. father. Jesus ministry began to please

  516. the father. Jesus ministry ended to

  517. please the father. That's his two

  518. baptisms, the water and then his

  519. crucifixion

  520. that we looked at already.

  521. So here the devil is testing, you know,

  522. the messiah or the the messiah to use

  523. his divinity to help his humanity.

  524. That's the test and that is not the

  525. father's will.

  526. The father's will is that he goes

  527. hungry. The father's will is that he

  528. trusts him. We shall not. And then

  529. notice how Jesus responds.

  530. What was Satan's question?

  531. Are you the son of God? What's Jesus

  532. answer? Man shall not live by bread

  533. alone, but by every word of God or every

  534. word that comes from God, literally.

  535. So Jesus has his priorities right and

  536. and this indeed will please his father.

  537. And now we come to the second test.

  538. Um

  539. and that is here as well. And the devil

  540. taking him up into the mountain he

  541. showed unto him the kingdoms

  542. of the world in a moment of time. So

  543. this is supernatural.

  544. This is, you know, above us and beyond

  545. us.

  546. And the devil said to him, "All this

  547. authority will I give thee, and the

  548. glory of them, for that has been

  549. delivered to me to give to whomsoever I

  550. want." Wow, man. You want to know why

  551. the world's so wicked? There's there's

  552. good reason why.

  553. And the devil was tempting the son of

  554. God to leave the kingdom of God here

  555. like he has been booted out.

  556. And and again the devil was you know

  557. talking to him as the son of God.

  558. And notice Jesus answered, "Get thee

  559. behind me, Satan,

  560. for it is written, Thou shalt worship

  561. the Lord thy God, and him only shalt

  562. thou serve."

  563. So Jesus was tempted

  564. to serve the world. Jesus is tempted to

  565. serve the devil. Jesus is tempted to do

  566. anything but but uh serve his father.

  567. And

  568. Jesus said, "No, thank you, devil. I

  569. think I'll continue

  570. to serve the Lord my God."

  571. So again, Jesus responds with a verse

  572. and a good one. And then we come to the

  573. third test here in verse 9. And he

  574. brought him up to Jerusalem and set him

  575. on a pinnacle of the temple. Again, this

  576. is supernatural. We don't have all the

  577. details of this,

  578. but we just have what what the what the

  579. writers obviously they weren't there.

  580. You know, none of these guys were there.

  581. They, you know, Jesus must have told him

  582. this

  583. and been part of his teaching. And and

  584. and notice

  585. Jerusalem here. And he set him on a

  586. pinnacle of the temple.

  587. And he said, "If you're the son of God,

  588. oh, you want to serve God? Here, try

  589. this.

  590. So, he is tempted

  591. to cast himself down here to basically

  592. to commit suicide as a man.

  593. Well, you just commit suicide. God's

  594. your father.

  595. And verse 10, for it is written, he

  596. shall give his angels charge over thee.

  597. The devil says, "Oh, you want to quote

  598. scripture? I can do that, too.

  599. I can find a verse and then tear it out

  600. of his context.

  601. But he can't fool Jesus. He's God.

  602. He wrote the word.

  603. And in their hands they shall bury thee

  604. up, lest at any time you dash your foot

  605. against a stone. And Jesus said, "It is

  606. written, thou shalt not put the Lord thy

  607. God to the test."

  608. That's what the devil's doing to the son

  609. of God. He's testing him. And Jesus

  610. said, "You shouldn't be doing this,

  611. devil.

  612. There's commandments against this."

  613. And he responded that way. And when the

  614. devil had ended all these testings,

  615. he departed from him for a season. A

  616. disappointed devil. So now we have the

  617. son of God having gone through these

  618. things. But notice all three times he

  619. said, "If you're the son of God, we're

  620. since you're the son of God, then do

  621. this, you know, leave the father's

  622. will."

  623. Jesus said no to every single one of

  624. them.

  625. So,

  626. you know, he didn't use his deity to

  627. overcome his humanity

  628. either. I mean, that that's in here.

  629. Turn back to Matthew chapter 4 where we

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  630. were.

  631. Matthew 4

  632. and verse 7

  633. is is written that thou shalt not put

  634. the Lord thy God to the test.

  635. And that's uh be gone Satan

  636. in verse 10. And the devil left him.

  637. And Matthew adds, "The angels came

  638. and ministered unto him." You think he's

  639. a man, just a man who who could possibly

  640. sin? No. The angels are worshiping him.

  641. This started in his This started in

  642. Bethlehem.

  643. He didn't become God. He's always been

  644. God. He became a man. the only begotten

  645. son of God. Um, as Psalm 2 talks about,

  646. turn to Hebrews.

  647. Uh, let's start in chapter 2. Got some

  648. verses in Hebrews.

  649. I hope I

  650. Hebrews chapter 2

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  651. and begin in verse 17.

  652. And wherefore in all things it behooved

  653. him to be made like

  654. his brethren.

  655. That's us.

  656. Jesus didn't, as I said this morning, I

  657. guess I'm going to have to find a

  658. different line. Jesus didn't, you know,

  659. wash up on Gilligan's Island

  660. as the Messiah.

  661. No, he came to the very place to the

  662. very people

  663. that God said, "I I will make you a

  664. great nation. I'll make you a great

  665. people. You'll bless the earth." Well,

  666. the greatest blessing is to have a

  667. savior and a redeemer.

  668. So, that's what happened. We've got

  669. through the Jewish nation this wonderful

  670. savior, this wonderful redeemer who is

  671. the son of God who cannot sin,

  672. who will not sin.

  673. And here in Hebrews,

  674. uh, and we talked about the sinlessness

  675. of Jesus this morning,

  676. and indeed

  677. he is sinless. And here in Hebrews

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  678. chapter 2 and verse 17,

  679. wherefore in all things that behooved

  680. him to be made like his brethren, that's

  681. us, not just the Jews, but humanity.

  682. You know, there were people that were

  683. saved before the Jews. Abraham was just

  684. the first man to become a Jew,

  685. and then the nation come from him. But

  686. remember, he was like everybody else. He

  687. was out there in the in the sticks like

  688. all of us.

  689. And here's why.

  690. That he might be a merciful and faithful

  691. high priest in all things pertaining

  692. to God. So Jesus knows firsthand

  693. what it's like to be tempted and tested

  694. by the greatest being on this earth.

  695. And this was a supernatural thing. And

  696. the devil was trying to get him to

  697. depart from the will of his father.

  698. And he says here and this, you know,

  699. Jesus accomplishing,

  700. you know, that's why we, you know, we

  701. have comfort and assurance, you know,

  702. and knowing God's holy, just, good. He,

  703. he hates sin. All those things we know,

  704. but we see how God miraculously

  705. and supernaturally

  706. dealt with our sin.

  707. Verse 18, for in that he himself

  708. has suffered being tempted. When was

  709. that?

  710. Well, from the time he got on this

  711. earth, as we saw this morning,

  712. this earth knew he was the son of God.

  713. The Jews knew it. Herod knew it. That's

  714. why Jesus had Mary and Joseph had to go

  715. to to to Egypt. But there was a verse

  716. for that even

  717. to to come and to be tested by the

  718. devil.

  719. He didn't come to set up a kingdom.

  720. He come to pay for our sin.

  721. Then he will set up his kingdom. Just

  722. like Psalm 2 says.

  723. And he suffered being tempted. What? I'm

  724. the one that should be suffering. I'm

  725. I'm the sinner.

  726. He's the sinless one.

  727. But he suffered as he was tempted. He

  728. was he went 40 days without food.

  729. Many other things. You know, the the

  730. devil wasn't the only person to test

  731. Jesus.

  732. There were many others and we saw some

  733. of them this morning. But what this says

  734. here is just the greatness of his mercy.

  735. You know, he he come to earth, spent 30

  736. day 33 years on the earth, and he said,

  737. "You humans are in big trouble and and

  738. uh I hate you and I hate your sin.

  739. You're going to all go to hell." No, he

  740. did not. This is all about his mercy.

  741. You want to see mercy, then follow

  742. Jesus. He was merciful to everybody. He

  743. was kind to everyone. He loved everyone.

  744. He wasn't biased. He wasn't a hypocrite

  745. like we are. He was holy, just, and

  746. good. And he lived his life in front of

  747. these men. Go to Hebrews chapter 4.

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  748. Hebrews chapter 4

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  749. and verse 15.

  750. Let's start in 14.

  751. Seeing then

  752. that we have a great high priest. You

  753. know that's what the Bible wants us to

  754. see

  755. is that God come to earth. God paid for

  756. our sins

  757. and you know we have been we have been

  758. made alive by him. We have eternal life

  759. now. We have what we needed. We have it.

  760. The mercy of God, we have it. The grace

  761. of God, we have it. The love of God, we

  762. have it. God did all that in his

  763. wonderful son.

  764. So, here is something else. Talk about

  765. God planning,

  766. you know, think about it, you know,

  767. okay, you you got saved, God wiped out

  768. all your sins, now go and sin no more. I

  769. mean, that's no remedy,

  770. you know. So, God through his son made a

  771. great high priest

  772. for us. Now, he's been to earth. He

  773. knows what it looks like down here. He

  774. knows what's going on. He knows how

  775. powerful the devil is in the world is

  776. all these things, how sinful it is. And

  777. he was here for a visit

  778. of 33 years. Him. There it is. Jesus the

  779. son of God. He was the son of God when

  780. he was born. He's the son of God when

  781. the devil tested him. He's still the son

  782. of God in heaven

  783. making intercession

  784. for us. So let us hold back to our our

  785. our confession, our profession which is

  786. him and and what he has done.

  787. We have not a high priest who cannot be

  788. touched with the feelings of our

  789. infirmities. There is not one thing you

  790. can go through

  791. that Jesus didn't go through as well.

  792. As God, he suffered. That's God. He was

  793. tempted and tested

  794. yet, oh, I'm getting ahead of myself.

  795. Like we yet without sin. He He's just

  796. above it. He's beyond it. Is our great

  797. high priest. Let us therefore come

  798. boldly

  799. to the throne of

  800. wrath

  801. and the throne of grace

  802. that we might obtain mercy and find help

  803. in the time of need. That's why

  804. God the father let his son be tested

  805. by the devil was so that as a man he can

  806. learn and relate what it is to be a man.

  807. Hebrews chapter 12.

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  808. Hebrews chapter 12

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  809. and verse

  810. 3.

  811. You know, the Bible says the son of God

  812. just I mean he's a member of the

  813. trinity, the holy trinity. Isaiah

  814. um talks about that holiness

  815. and and and all three the holy God uh

  816. the holy father, the holy son, the holy

  817. spirit

  818. and there the son volunteers to come to

  819. earth

  820. and to become a man and to redeem back

  821. this lost humanity, this lost uh group

  822. of sinners. So

  823. from eternity past, he has always been

  824. the sinless son of God.

  825. And we got to see it. I didn't get to

  826. see it. We're but others did. And and we

  827. can see him and meet him and follow him

  828. in his word.

  829. But he's able to help us. And he and he

  830. is still holy, just,

  831. and merciful. And then verse three says

  832. here,

  833. "For consider him who?" Jesus is the

  834. author and finisher of our faith. Do you

  835. think you would just naturally find God?

  836. No.

  837. No one would. None of us would. I mean,

  838. you take out that chain, the election,

  839. predestination, the foreign knowledge of

  840. God. If it weren't for all of those, we

  841. would not be believers. Just electing us

  842. is not enough. we need to call,

  843. you know. So, all those things are

  844. individually are true, but they all go

  845. together and without all of them, we

  846. don't find God.

  847. We're like all the rest of this world.

  848. And verse three says, "Consider him."

  849. That's Jesus. Jesus said, "If you know

  850. me, you know my father." He said, "If

  851. you know me, you have eternal life.

  852. He says, "If you know me, you'll never

  853. thirst again."

  854. That's the Jesus I know. That's the

  855. Jesus of the Bible. The one he's talked

  856. about here in Hebrews, looking unto

  857. Jesus, the author and finisher of our

  858. faith. Who for the joy.

  859. Now, this this is incredible. The joy

  860. that was set before him.

  861. Jesus said it was a Jesus the son of God

  862. said it was a joy for him to finish the

  863. work and do his father's will.

  864. We don't see that there, do we? What?

  865. Man, that's it has to be painful. That

  866. has to be incredible thing to go through

  867. all that and and those that's all true.

  868. But Jesus volunteered to do it and he

  869. fulfilled his father's will and he did

  870. all these things and he is the finisher

  871. of our faith. uh who is the joy that was

  872. set before him endured the cross

  873. despising the shame and he is set down

  874. at the right hand of the throne of God.

  875. So when we think of Jesus, we want to

  876. think of him there.

  877. You know, he's not in Hollywood starring

  878. in a movie.

  879. He's in heaven. He's at the right hand

  880. of the father. He he was victorious

  881. while he was on the earth.

  882. But he, what did he do? He come came

  883. come down here and and he he walked with

  884. sinners. He walked with evil men and

  885. never sinned, know not one.

  886. So he he goes on to say, "Lest you be

  887. wearied and faint in your mind that you

  888. have not resisted unto blood striving

  889. against sin." Jesus did.

  890. The hate that was poured out on him.

  891. Um

  892. even his own apostles betrayed him.

  893. Not just Judas. It says they all ran

  894. ahead. I think the women were the only

  895. ones brave enough to stick around

  896. in a society that hated women.

  897. But once you meet this man, you can't

  898. leave this man.

  899. And that's who Jesus is. You know, he's

  900. this the the sinless son of God. He It's

  901. not that I said this morning. It's not

  902. that he, you know, he could have sinned,

  903. but he didn't. There's no way he could

  904. sin. He's God. That's what James says.

  905. Go on over to to James

  906. in chapter one

  907. was if there was ever the Bible says the

  908. wages of sin is death. That's why we

  909. die. That's why everyone's a sinner.

  910. You're not going to escape death.

  911. Unless the rapture happens

  912. and we're holding out for that. I don't

  913. like the more joy. I don't like the

  914. cemetery.

  915. I want to be alive when he comes back.

  916. But it's okay if I'm not

  917. because I know him. I know he's going to

  918. keep every one of his promises. He's

  919. going to bring me out of the grave.

  920. And he's going to bring you out of the

  921. grave as well if you believed in him.

  922. That's how important faith is. It's what

  923. God wants. He doesn't want our works.

  924. They're filthy rags.

  925. No one can be saved by works. We must be

  926. saved by faith. And faith in this son of

  927. God.

  928. And and we're here in James.

  929. It's interesting. The book of James is

  930. where he says the devil, you know, the

  931. devil believes in God.

  932. you know, so don't just say you believe

  933. in God. You know, make uh you know, your

  934. your faith should produce obedience,

  935. not the other way around. Obedience

  936. cannot produce faith. Only faith can

  937. produce obedience. And that's what God

  938. wants, faith in his son, his holy

  939. righteous son. And that's the incredible

  940. thing, you know, I'm looking forward to

  941. looking at Jesus life and seeing, you

  942. know, all these things that he did that

  943. we have in the word of God and comparing

  944. what Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John have

  945. to say about Jesus. They were with him

  946. and

  947. they have a lot to say. But here James

  948. uh verse 13,

  949. chapter 1, James chapter 1

    James 1 chapter mention

  950. and verse 13. Let no man say

  951. when he is tempted, I am tempted of God.

  952. For God cannot be tempted with any evil,

  953. neither tempt he any man. So it's not

  954. God that test tempts us. God tests us.

  955. But God doesn't tempt temp tempt us to

  956. do evil.

  957. And that's what this says. But every man

  958. is tempted.

  959. Turn too many pages. And when he is

  960. drawn away after his own lust and

  961. enticed, Jesus never had a sin nature.

  962. He he never had to battle with the sin

  963. nature

  964. like the rest of humanity.

  965. We're all sinners. We're all born

  966. sinners. We got it from Adam and then we

  967. take control and then we do our own

  968. sinning.

  969. And that's what sin does.

  970. That's going away from God. Sin's going

  971. away from God.

  972. And when lust

  973. has conceived, it brings forth sin.

  974. So thoughts are sin.

  975. Jesus never had a bad thought. Not one.

  976. No, not one.

  977. So, what a mind he had.

  978. What a mind we don't have. But guess

  979. what? Now we've got the mind of Jesus.

  980. So, we don't have to sin. We don't have

  981. to listen to the devil. We don't have to

  982. listen to our sin nature. We don't have

  983. to listen to these things.

  984. And in verse 17, every good gift and

  985. every perfect gift is from above.

  986. Satan did nothing like this.

  987. I mean, he's a taker. He's a tempter.

  988. He's evil.

  989. But God is good.

  990. And not only is God good, he is a good

  991. giver. He's a generous giver. And he

  992. gave he gave us his son, his only

  993. begotten son to come down from the

  994. father of lights with whom there is no

  995. variableness

  996. neither shadow

  997. of turning.

  998. Here you go. Of his own will begott he

  999. us with the word of truth. Who saved us?

1000. We didn't save ourselves. Oh, we might

1001. have read a verse and and said, "Lord,

1002. save me." Like Peter did.

1003. Or, you know, other men and women that

1004. we have accounts of in the Bible.

1005. But we all come the same way. How's

1006. that? We're born again with the word of

  1007. truth

1008. that we should be the kind of first

  1009. fruits of his creatures.

1010. So God wants us to know we're saved and

1011. to be assured of that that we might go

1012. on and serve God and not stop. That's

  1013. why we're here. That's why he's given us

1014. this life that we have um and to do

1015. these things, these wonderful things for

  1016. him.

1017. And turn over. Let's look at that verse

  1018. while we're here where

1019. James talked about the devil.

1020. It's right there in in verse 14.

  1021. >> Oh, I'm sorry, two. James 2:14. Thank

    James 2:14

  1022. you.

1023. So, we get our testing.

1024. You know, we're not like Jesus. We're

  1025. not

1026. one of the, you know, we we are quite

  1027. able with sinning.

1028. That's about the best thing we do is

  1029. sin.

1030. But God made a provision.

1031. And here is the test of good works. Do

  1032. we have them?

1033. You know, faith comes by hearing and

1034. hearing by the word of God as he said

  1035. over there.

1036. And then what does faith do? Faith obeys

  1037. God.

1038. and the word of God. And James says,

1039. "What does it profit my brethren? Though

1040. a man say he has faith and he doesn't

1041. have work to faith save him.

1042. And if a brother or sister is naked and

1043. destitute of any food, and one of you

1044. say unto them, depart in peace,

1045. be warmed and filled, notwithstanding,

1046. you have given them those things that

1047. they are needful of." The body was the

  1048. profit.

  1049. I mean, that's that's what God says. You

  1050. know, if I

1051. humans, we just scratch each other's

  1052. back, right? It's a it's a eye for an

1053. eye and a tooth for tooth. You scratch

1054. my back, I'll scratch your back kind of

1055. thing. But with God, it's not that way.

1056. There's nothing we could do to save

  1057. ourselves. Nothing.

  1058. And God took action

1059. and he's made it possible through faith.

1060. The whole book of Hebrews chapter 11,

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

1061. the hall of fame of faith, all those

  1062. people were tested

1063. and and they come forth from their

  1064. testing

  1065. and we're all tested. I mean, that's

1066. where the word testimony comes from.

1067. And that's what you know, you know,

1068. thank God that that we have this or or

1069. we'd be right back where we come from.

1070. I don't want to go back where I came

  1071. from.

1072. Wasn't good. I want to stay here. I want

1073. to follow the son of God. He is an

  1074. amazing

1075. man. He's an amazing God.

1076. I want to do what I can for him.

1077. That's what James is saying.

1078. And then verse 17, even so faith, if it

1079. has not works, is dead being alone.

1080. Yet a man says, "You will have faith, I

1081. will have works, I say, show me your

1082. faith without your works, and I will

1083. show you my faith by my works." You

1084. believe that there is one God? See,

  1085. they're the Trinity. Wait a minute. I

1086. thought God was three persons.

  1087. Oh, he is.

1088. But he's also one. You do well. The

1089. demons believe and tremble. Satan knows

1090. who he is, the son of God.

1091. So verse 20 says, "But will you know, oh

1092. vain man, that faith without works is

1093. dead?" And then he talks about Abraham,

  1094. what Abraham did.

1095. And that's how we see our faith. I can't

1096. see your heart, you know. I can only

1097. see, you know, what you do.

1098. and the fact that you're following this

1099. wonderful Jesus that we have in the word

  1100. of God.

1101. Oh, does anyone have a question?

1102. Good. I thought John was going to ask me

1103. one. He put his hand up.

  1104. Don't stmp me, John.

1105. If he was 100% God, he was 100% saint.

  1106. He would have

1107. he couldn't the lamb of God

  1108. because

  1109. it's impossible

  1110. to be the sacrifice

  1111. of the world.

1112. You know, it's crazy to me that the

  1113. devil

1114. do that kind of stuff.

  1115. >> Yeah.

  1116. >> Trusting you more.

1117. May the power of your love and the light

  1118. of your word shine

1119. to a sin darkened world as we go from

  1120. this
