  1. And I imagine there's going to be a few

  2. messages around this area.

  3. And you know, the spirit of God is the

  4. God the Father and God the Holy Spirit.

  5. We've looked at them. And we have God

  6. the Son who is Christ who come to the

  7. earth literally as a man.

  8. You remember what happened in Hosea?

  9. That little book. If you haven't read

  10. it, go read it. Read it. It's a great

  11. book.

  12. The theme is um not Sunday school

  13. material,

  14. but God told the prophet to go marry a

  15. prostitute.

  16. And you believe it or not, that's in the

  17. Bible.

  18. Why? God said you, I want to show you my

  19. love.

  20. This is what I'm going to do for you.

  21. you know, you will forsake me, but I

  22. will never forsake you.

  23. So, even through these human

  24. relationships

  25. and things, we

  26. we have God speaking to us. And Hosea

  27. said, "You're a spirit. Why did you

  28. choose to love me?" And you know, that's

  29. what go who God is. He's a spirit who

  30. has chosen to love us. and he has sent

  31. his son, the Lord Jesus Christ, here

  32. um to show us many things. Let's start

  33. out in first Peter chapter 2.

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  34. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  35. chapter 2.

  36. You know, the Old Testament was

  37. wonderful. It still is a wonderful book,

  38. but once you know it's talking about

  39. Christ, it's it becomes, you know, a

  40. better, greater book. And then in the

  41. New Testament, we have the person of

  42. Christ. You know, it's not unimportant

  43. either one, but it talks about the love

  44. of God. So, here in First Peter, let's

  45. turn turn to chapter 2

  46. and

  47. verse 21.

  48. a man by the name of, in a way of

  49. introduction,

  50. Thomas Manton.

  51. Some of you know him, some of you don't,

  52. but he was one of the uh o oldies but

  53. goodies.

  54. I've got a whole volume um of his

  55. through the whole Bible. And

  56. he he said some wonderful things. And

  57. I didn't use him for this message, but

  58. I'm going to use a quote from him.

  59. He was back in 1675.

  60. And guys like um the guys that we

  61. respect Warfield, I greatly respect

  62. Warfield. He not only was a great Bible

  63. teacher, he was a wonderful man as well.

  64. So the two should go together and and

  65. you know that's what God wants. He's he

  66. wants us to know him. That can have a

  67. great effect on our lives.

  68. Thomas Manton said this, "To have the

  69. spirit of God is to have the heart of

  70. God. And to have the heart of God is to

  71. have the mind of God. And to have the

  72. mind of God is to know the will of God.

  73. And to know the will of God is to do the

  74. will of God."

  75. So God comes to us and introduces

  76. himself to us and says Jesus said it

  77. best. Come and learn of me.

  78. And you know that's the part of this

  79. that you know I got saved

  80. a long long time ago

  81. 40ome years ago now. But that was a part

  82. of the mystery. I was like well okay now

  83. I understand the gospel. Well, I know

  84. what it takes to save me. And I put my

  85. faith in Jesus. But now what? You know,

  86. I didn't know. I was I was running

  87. around going to different churches. I

  88. kept going back to the Bible class, back

  89. to the Bible class, back to the Bible

  90. class. And I began to see that there was

  91. a difference in in studying the word of

  92. God and not studying the word of God.

  93. And that's to know God is to study his

  94. word. That is the will of God to study

  95. his word. Another man said um that

  96. theology is eminently a process in which

  97. God speaks and man listens.

  98. That's what the prophet said. Speak Lord

  99. and your servant hears. And here

  100. uh in first Peter in verse 21 he said

  101. for even here unto were you called.

  102. But not only Peter an apostle he how did

  103. he how did he get to where he was? We'll

  104. we'll look at where he was here in a

  105. second

  106. but he saw in Christ these things. He

  107. saw in Christ you know his sufferings

  108. for us and leaving us an example that we

  109. should follow in his steps.

  110. So the word of God and the apostles say

  111. don't follow me follow him. The word of

  112. God says don't follow men follow me. The

  113. word of God says God is not interested

  114. in man's opinion. It's not a provoke.

  115. God said it and that settles it.

  116. But there is a great reward as the psalm

  117. says in listening to God. We know Peter,

  118. he is a he's like us. He he was a very

  119. sinful man.

  120. And here we see many years later this

  121. sinful man now telling us, look at this

  122. list here

  123. in um

  124. chapter

  125. two in verse 11.

  126. And you know the word of God is to have

  127. the preeminence.

  128. You know, we know what that word is.

  129. It's a, you know, it means excellency.

  130. It means superiority. It means all those

  131. things. And and it's very obvious that

  132. the word of God says follow Jesus. And

  133. Jesus said, "I am the word of God." But

  134. so many people never get this far in

  135. their Christian life.

  136. So important for us to follow Jesus and

  137. to follow his word. And here

  138. um you know the failures that Peter had

  139. Peter's life was open mouth and insert

  140. foot.

  141. He did that over and over.

  142. Jesus kept you know helping him to learn

  143. and to hear what Jesus said. And you

  144. know Jesus he's an incredible person. He

  145. can make us a a royal priesthood, a holy

  146. nation, a people of God's own up there

  147. in verse n.

  148. So it's not on our merit, it's on the

  149. merit of Christ.

  150. And now we're a people. We didn't we're

  151. wondering, weren't we? Now we are

  152. following we're following Jesus. And

  153. look in in in verse 11 there. And I'm

  154. just going to highlight these words that

  155. are verbs here for things for us to do.

  156. Peter says, "Dearly beloved, we're loved

  157. of Peter. We're loved of God now. We're

  158. in the church. We're children of God.

  159. We're following Jesus, but we're

  160. sojourers and pilgrims on the earth. So

  161. we leave the earth. You know, when we

  162. get saved that we come to Christ and we

  163. never leave." And here he says,

  164. "Abstain."

  165. In verse 12, he says, "Having your

  166. behavior honest

  167. among the Gentiles,

  168. that they may see what? Our good works."

  169. So that's what we do. We have good works

  170. as we follow Christ. And then we submit

  171. ourselves, everyone, to the ordinances

  172. of man. We don't, you know, just, okay,

  173. now I'm a Christian. I don't have to go

  174. to work anymore

  175. or I don't have to, you know, I don't

  176. have to do anything. I'm just going to

  177. sit around be a Christian. No, no. That

  178. God says that we need to go and become a

  179. productive part of the of the the city

  180. we're in.

  181. And that's what God wants.

  182. Behold, they'll glorify God on the day

  183. of visitation. What's that? Well,

  184. everyone you've worked with and everyone

  185. you've been on went through this life

  186. with that you've witnessed to, you know,

  187. they're they're going to give an account

  188. someday.

  189. And then

  190. so our testimonies are very important.

  191. And here Peter who years later has

  192. learned these things and he's sharing

  193. them with us. This is a great a great

  194. list. Submit yourselves to every

  195. ordinance of man

  196. um for the Lord's sake, whether he be

  197. king or supreme,

  198. unto governors, unto them uh by him that

  199. punishers of evildoers. And just like

  200. Paul, that's what Paul says in Rome.

  201. God wants us to be productive parts of

  202. the society and subject to governors and

  203. them that are sent for what? punishment

  204. of the evildoers. That's not our job.

  205. It's theirs.

  206. Took me a while to learn that. I thought

  207. I was a punisher of evildoers. No, God,

  208. he will do it.

  209. And for the praise of them that do well,

  210. what does he say? For this is the will

  211. of God.

  212. exactly what Thomas Mattton said, you

  213. know, to to know God and to to uh do

  214. these things.

  215. It's the will of God. And and um there

  216. verse 17, honor all men. Verse 18,

  217. servants be subject to your masters.

  218. And then he says, what glory is it in

  219. verse 20, look at the end of verse 20.

  220. This is acceptable with God. So Peter

  221. learned this after you know all these

  222. years and you know and we all grow in

  223. grace and here he is at the end of his

  224. life sharing these wonderful things from

  225. us and and then he says in verse 21

  226. where we started out what's the reason

  227. here's your calling

  228. wait a minute I'm I thought I was you

  229. know called to do this and called to do

  230. that well maybe you were maybe your

  231. occupation maybe you know you for um

  232. your marital status and all those things

  233. that you know we differ in in life. We

  234. all have a different life experience.

  235. But

  236. but uh Peter says here that we are

  237. called here

  238. to suffer like he did and he left an

  239. example that we should follow in his

  240. steps.

  241. So, how can we follow Jesus in his steps

  242. um without the word of God? We cannot.

  243. So, these things are so important.

  244. Here's our calling. And here here's

  245. Peter showing these things to us. And

  246. Peter says, "Follow Jesus. Don't follow

  247. me. I failed. Remember, I denied Christ.

  248. Remember?"

  249. So, you know, men are like that. But God

  250. has mercy for us sinners. Now turn over

  251. to first John.

  252. That's why we are that our theology we

  253. must study the person of Christ. We must

  254. see Jesus. It's you know one thing to

  255. say oh I know Jesus and then okay who is

  256. he? I used to do that with people

  257. doortodoor calling. Oh I know God. Oh

  258. okay can you describe God to me? and it

  259. just stops everyone in their tracks. You

  260. cannot describe the God of the Bible if

  261. you don't know the Bible.

  262. And when we know the God of the Bible

  263. and we know what the will of the God,

  264. what the will of God is, is that we

  265. follow his son who set a tremendous

  266. example for us. So that's why this is

  267. important. You know, Jesus was an

  268. example to Peter

  269. and and and to all the apostles

  270. and John was there as well. 1 John

    1 John 2 chapter mention

  271. chapter 2, you know this verse,

  272. John chapter 2,

    John 2 chapter mention

  273. remember one of John's favorite words

  274. was abiding.

  275. Abiding. Abiding. He got it from Jesus.

  276. That's what Jesus said. Abide in me and

  277. I will abide in you. Do what I say and

  278. follow me. This is not complicated at

  279. all. And here in 1 John chapter 2 verse

    1 John 2:6

  280. 6,

  281. and he that saith, he abideth in him

  282. ought himself also so to walk even as he

  283. walked. So here John's saying the same

  284. thing. You know, they knew the person of

  285. Jesus. I mean, we didn't we have we

  286. weren't on the earth when he was,

  287. but we didn't need to be. Now, we can

  288. follow him through his word and follow

  289. him as we come to the church and

  290. assemble and look into the word of God.

  291. Look in chapter 2 verse 21. 1 John 2 and

  292. 21.

  293. There he says, "I have not written unto

  294. you because you know the truth,

  295. but because you know it not and that no

  296. lie is in the truth." So we follow the

  297. truth. The truth and Jesus are the same

  298. thing.

  299. But Jesus is a person. The truth is a

  300. person and and that's what the apostles

  301. are telling us at the end of their lives

  302. and and and you know well into their

  303. ministry of doing this themselves and

  304. they said follow Jesus you know follow

  305. his example do what he did and continue

  306. and abide and look in verse 24

  307. John 2:24

    John 2:24

  308. there he says let that therefore abide

  309. abide in you which you have heard from

  310. the beginning for which you have heard

  311. from the beginning shall remain in you

  312. and shall continue in you the father the

  313. son and the father you know so the son

  314. and the father are in us the holy spirit

  315. is in us so god has equipped us to do

  316. this to follow him to know the truth and

  317. chapter 1 verse one

  318. first John chapter 1 verse one

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  319. there. Here, John sums it up. That which

  320. was from the beginning,

  321. that's Jesus. That's the Godhead, God

  322. the Father, God the Son, God the Holy

  323. Spirit. God became a man to be an

  324. example

  325. for us.

  326. And you know, we can't,

  327. you know, no way can we fulfill that. We

  328. can't be like Jesus. Exactly.

  329. But whatever Jesus did is right and

  330. whatever he didn't do is wrong. Whatever

  331. he said is the truth.

  332. He is the truth.

  333. And that's what he says here. Heard that

  334. we uh have seen with our eyes. They saw

  335. him.

  336. You know that's him.

  337. He's come out of the grave.

  338. He walked on the water. He calmed the

  339. storm. He raised the dead. He healed the

  340. lepers.

  341. It was him

  342. and we have looked upon him. Our hands

  343. have handled the word of life.

  344. So Jesus is the logos. Jesus is the word

  345. of life. He He brings life. He gives

  346. life. That's where it begins. Told

  347. Nicodemus, you got to be born again to

  348. have eternal life.

  349. And those of us that have been born

  350. again, we have this eternal life.

  351. And we bear witness of it. and we show

  352. you eternal life. But that was in the

  353. Father was also manifest

  354. in us. That which we have seen and heard

  355. declare we unto you that you may also

  356. have fellowship with us and our

  357. fellowship as where? Father, the Son

  358. Jesus Christ.

  359. So God wants to have fellowship with his

  360. with his sons. That's who we are now.

  361. We're all sons in Christ and daughters

  362. in Christ. We're no longer servant.

  363. We've been adopted into the family of

  364. God. We have access

  365. to the great throne of grace to the

  366. wonderful savior Jesus Christ who come

  367. down here and and was an incredible

  368. example for us and ultimately laid down

  369. his life that we might have fellowship

  370. with the Trinity.

  371. Turn over to Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  372. Luke,

  373. my old buddy Simeon. Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  374. He's one of the guys I want to meet when

  375. I get to heaven.

  376. Old Simeon.

  377. And here you guys know the story. And

  378. you know, we um

  379. we all have, you know, we all have uh

  380. choices to make in life. And this man

  381. chose

  382. to wait.

  383. And he he did so because God had told

  384. him something.

  385. That's what we're doing. We're we're

  386. waiting like Simeon because God told us

  387. something.

  388. And you know that's the prophecies.

  389. That's the future. That's with us. I

  390. mean you know death is not the end of

  391. us. Death is not the end of uh the

  392. believers.

  393. And old Simeon here, verse 25,

  394. there's a man in Jerusalem whose name

  395. was Simeon. He was the same man was

  396. righteous and devout, waiting for the

  397. consolation of Israel. How could you be

  398. like that? Well, God prepared him, you

  399. know, and that's what God's doing with

  400. us. He's preparing us for the return of

  401. his son. We need to be like Simeon. We

  402. need to be in church. Uh we don't have a

  403. temple anymore. We need to be in church.

  404. We need to be with each other. We need

  405. to be looking for the consolation of

  406. Israel. And the Holy Spirit was upon

  407. him.

  408. God rewarded his faith

  409. and it was revealed unto him by the Holy

  410. Spirit that he should not taste death

  411. before he had seen the Lord's Christ. So

  412. the the Bible doesn't say he was a

  413. Levitical priest.

  414. it. That's one of those things that

  415. aren't here. You know, was he one or was

  416. he not? We'll never know until we get to

  417. heaven. But it doesn't say anything

  418. about that. It says that John's dad was

  419. a Levite priest waiting in the temple.

  420. But this is here. So, we can see that,

  421. you know, that's what God honors is just

  422. faith.

  423. Lord, I'm waiting on you. Lord, you

  424. know, help me. Lord, you know, I I want

  425. to be a devout man. I want to be a

  426. righteous man. I'm waiting on you.

  427. That's it.

  428. It's not hard. It's not complicated.

  429. And then as well, we have the um example

  430. of Anna there in verse 36.

  431. I mean, why are these here? The these

  432. are here. So if you're just a common old

  433. person,

  434. you know, you're not a part of the fancy

  435. society and the high the high rollers,

  436. you know, God is looking for faith, not

  437. not our pedigree.

  438. Our pedigree goes back to Adam.

  439. That's not very good. But here, you

  440. know, the the scriptures are saying, you

  441. know, God honors faith in and Simeon,

  442. God honors the faith of Anna. God

  443. honored the faith of Mary.

  444. You know, God is just an incredible

  445. rewarder

  446. of those who are faithful.

  447. And it said here, he's what was he

  448. doing? He He's in the scripture. That's

  449. where he was. That's where we need to

  450. be. This is so important. And we have

  451. two examples here of great blessings

  452. that come on just ordinary people.

  453. And you know, we have these examples and

  454. they are good. Anna and and Simeon, and

  455. we won't turn to this one, but how about

  456. the centurion?

  457. You know, he said, "Lord, you just speak

  458. and it'll happen." And Jesus said, "I I

  459. didn't find this faith in Israel."

  460. And that's what Israel should have been

  461. ready like the centurion. Lord, sec,

  462. speak and we'll do it like these folks

  463. here. So that's what God honors. He

  464. honors faith. Doesn't matter if you're

  465. eight 100 years old or or eight years

  466. old.

  467. God honors faith. Now turn over to Luke

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  468. chapter 7.

  469. Luke,

  470. you know, it's just amazing

  471. that, you know, God used fishermen. God

  472. used Simeon. God used Anna. God used

  473. Mary.

  474. And and you know what? That's what the

  475. Old Testament says.

  476. And here's proof of that here in Luke

  477. 7

  478. and verse 22.

  479. Who did Jesus come to?

  480. Okay, I'm only hanging out in the

  481. Millionaires Club.

  482. you know, I'm only hanging out at the

  483. country club. I'm only hanging out, you

  484. know, with the, you know, the uh fancy

  485. people.

  486. No, he says here,

  487. and Jesus said, "Go your way

  488. and tell John."

  489. When Jesus speaks, we listen.

  490. And that's what John did. Calm them

  491. right down. Did I miss the Messiah?

  492. No, John, you didn't.

  493. And what does Jesus say? How does he how

  494. does he comfort him? How does he um

  495. bring him forward in the in the state

  496. that he is in? Well, with the word of

  497. God. The blind see, the lame walk,

  498. the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear,

  499. the dead are raised. To the poor,

  500. the gospel is preached. Who did Jesus

  501. come to? It wasn't all those guys up

  502. there. It was all these guys down here

  503. with us.

  504. And you know what Paul says in first

  505. Corinthians about, you know, people that

  506. God uses or can use. Not many wise men

  507. after the flesh. Not many mighty men

  508. after the flesh are called. Some are.

  509. And God can use those guys too as well.

  510. That's just the enormity of our God. The

  511. enormity of Jesus. He does. He can take

  512. a leper and make a minister out of him.

  513. He can take a poor man and make a

  514. minister out of him. He can take a blind

  515. man, make a minister out of him. And

  516. that's what he says here. And a deaf

  517. man.

  518. So, you know, those are the people that

  519. Jesus come to. Wow. I would have never

  520. thought that, but he did. Just as the

  521. Old Testament said. And blessed is he

  522. whosoever shall not be offended in me.

  523. That's the Jesus said that's what I'm

  524. looking for.

  525. Whether you're rich or poor, you know,

  526. there's, you know, don't be offended in

  527. me. I'm like you.

  528. You know, he he uh had a human side to

  529. him. And that's, you know, the lepers.

  530. Look in look in chapter 5 verse 12.

  531. chapter 5

  532. in verse 12.

  533. You know, it's it's the old the

  534. orphanage illustration.

  535. If you know, you're going to adopt a

  536. baby.

  537. You went to the orphanage and you know

  538. there was a whole bunch of babies at the

  539. or the orphanage, every one of us would

  540. probably go in there and pick the

  541. prettiest,

  542. nicest one we could find. That's not

  543. what God did. We're the worst.

  544. You know, we're the poor. We're the

  545. We're the lepers. We're the, you know,

  546. we're those who society has cast out.

  547. That's okay. That helps us follow him.

  548. And here the leper, you know, these

  549. people wouldn't even go around lepers.

  550. People wouldn't even go around women.

  551. the woman of Samaria at the well.

  552. You know, Jesus broke some ground for

  553. the ministry

  554. and those who follow him, we're going to

  555. go to the poor. We're going to go to the

  556. lepers. You know, we're going to do all

  557. these things that he did. These are the

  558. people he come to save. These are the

  559. people he come to change their lives and

  560. give them eternal life.

  561. And in verse 12 it says, "And it came to

  562. pass, he was in a certain city.

  563. Behold, a man full of leprosy

  564. who seeing Jesus fell on his face and

  565. besought him, saying,"Lord, if you will,

  566. you can make me clean."

  567. There's no one Jesus can't make clean.

  568. Well, this is talking about physically.

  569. You think physical filth is bad? How

  570. about spiritual filth?

  571. You know, and that's what we are. We're

  572. all dead in trespasses and sins. And and

  573. Jesus has come to give us life, to give

  574. us life everlasting. Well, how did his

  575. disciples react to this?

  576. You know, our our masters over there

  577. healing lepers. That's not where we want

  578. him.

  579. Notice verse one. And it came to pass as

  580. the people pressed upon him

  581. to hear the word of God, that's it. You

  582. want to hear the word of God, there's

  583. only one place, only one source,

  584. and it's Jesus. He stood by the lake of

  585. Ginerith

  586. and he saw two boats standing by the

  587. lake

  588. and

  589. the fishermen were gone out of them and

  590. they were washing their nets and he

  591. entered into one boat which was Simon's.

  592. This is early on,

  593. you know, when

  594. you guys are familiar with the apostles.

  595. They all some of them were fishermen,

  596. some of them were tax collectors.

  597. Um, Simon was a zealot. You know,

  598. they're just a variety of backgrounds,

  599. but they were not the Pharisees and the

  600. Sadducees and the Jews and the scribes.

  601. No, they were the common people,

  602. the poor people.

  603. the down and outers and that's who Jesus

  604. came to

  605. and he told Peter later on you didn't

  606. choose me that John there in the upper

  607. room you haven't chosen me but I have

  608. chosen you and ordained you that you

  609. should go forward

  610. so the only reason we know Jesus is he

  611. chose us you know that's uh here as well

  612. but notice Peter's reaction now when he

  613. cease speaking. He said to Simon,

  614. "Launch out into the deep and let down

  615. your nets for draw it." And Simon

  616. answered and said unto him, "Master, we

  617. toil all night. We've taken nothing.

  618. Nevertheless,

  619. at thy word, I will let down the net.

  620. Whatever Jesus says, obey him."

  621. It's like Mary at the at the wedding

  622. feast. She's told them that she knew

  623. Jesus. Whatever he says, do it.

  624. So that's why we study Jesus. That's why

  625. we look at the person of Christ. That's

  626. why we we want to be introduced to him.

  627. We want to know him on a personal level.

  628. And and that's what a personality is.

  629. You know, there there are about six or

  630. seven personalities.

  631. And you know, we all fall into one of

  632. those groups. We have you know there

  633. there are positive things about our

  634. personality there are negative things

  635. about our personality and this is not

  636. psychology it's just basic human nature

  637. you know that that we know you know we

  638. all fall into these and you know God it

  639. doesn't matter what our personality is

  640. you know that's not a restriction for

  641. God in any means

  642. and here Peter um he says says here in

  643. verse

  644. seven, they beckoned unto their partners

  645. and they who were the in the other boats

  646. that they should come and help them. And

  647. they came and they filled the boats and

  648. they began to sink. So many fish.

  649. Why? They did what Jesus said to do.

  650. So he knows what's going on. We can

  651. trust him. So even if we don't

  652. understand everything, that's where

  653. faith comes in. We're not saved by

  654. knowledge. We're not saved by

  655. understanding. We are saved by faith.

  656. And look, look at the reaction that

  657. Peter has. You know, Peter

  658. here, he says, Simon Peter saw it. He

  659. fell down at Jesus knees saying, "Depart

  660. from me for I am a sinful man, O Lord."

  661. That's what we need. you know, we need

  662. to fall at his feet and say the same

  663. thing. Lord, I'm a sinful man like

  664. Peter. And that's what people need to

  665. hear. You whether you're a leper or

  666. whether you're a poor man, whether

  667. you're a rich man,

  668. you know, you are a sinner. I am a

  669. sinner. He's the holy one.

  670. And until you know that, you I don't

  671. suppose you could call him Lord.

  672. And this is probably where Peter was

  673. saved. I know he says later on, you

  674. know, that the father revealed it,

  675. >> but here's where Peter's call

  676. and he was astonished um and all that

  677. were with them the draw of fish which

  678. they which they had taken

  679. you know so just obeying Jesus is that

  680. what we should do

  681. and he goes on to say here fear not from

  682. henceforth thou shalt catch man.

  683. Well, Jesus chose a lot of fishermen to

  684. follow him and they understood this. Oh,

  685. we've been catching fish. Now, we're

  686. going to go for men. Well, that's what

  687. the ministry is. That's what the

  688. Christian life is.

  689. You know, I'm a sinful man, Lord. But he

  690. said, "Go

  691. and, you know, and trust in him." So,

  692. you know, that's this is how the

  693. apostles reacted to Jesus. You know, how

  694. else could you react if you went out all

  695. night and caught nothing and then boom,

  696. the boat's full? How'd that happen?

  697. Well, the master, son of God, oh Lord,

  698. the one who created the fish, he's upon

  699. the earth. And remember what Luke said

  700. in chapter one, go back there. We we

  701. looked at this when we talked about the

  702. incarnation.

  703. in Luke 1

  704. and verse 35,

  705. you know, he's

  706. he's not a man.

  707. He's not an angel.

  708. He's um

  709. the son of God. Look at verse 35.

  710. The angel said, "The Holy Spirit will

  711. come upon you.

  712. the power of the highest shall

  713. overshadow you. Therefore, also that

  714. holy thing.

  715. That's what Peter said. Depart from me,

  716. Lord. I'm a I'm a sinful man.

  717. So, we need to know the holiness of

  718. Jesus. We need to know the perfectness

  719. of Jesus. We need to know he's God. He's

  720. the son of God. That's what it says. He

  721. will be born of thee, and I will call

  722. him the son of God. And Simeon knew it

  723. when he saw him. Anna knew it

  724. when they saw him because they were in

  725. the scriptures. And that's key for us.

  726. So that's what we need to do. We need to

  727. find Jesus in his word and follow Jesus

  728. in his word, you know, and and you know,

  729. we we catch up and then we drift off or

  730. we fall behind, but our course doesn't

  731. change. We're still following him.

  732. He's not done with us, you know. He's

  733. going to he's going to complete that

  734. great work in us that he has begun like

  735. he did in Peter. You know, there's

  736. Peter. I'm a sinful man, Lord. And

  737. here's Peter 30 years later saying,

  738. "Whatever that man says, do it."

  739. That's what the word of God says. To God

  740. be the glory. John 11:36.

    John 11:36

  741. You know, Jesus loved people.

  742. I mean, that's

  743. that has to come out. I mean, you just

  744. you just can't hide the love. Animals

  745. know if you love them.

  746. Children know if you love them.

  747. And here, look what he he he wept in

  748. verse 35.

  749. There's his humanity on full display.

  750. And then it says here, the Jews, behold

  751. how he loved him. And we got an

  752. exclamation point on that.

  753. Just the incredible love Jesus had for

  754. people.

  755. Peter saw it, John saw it, you know, all

  756. the apostles saw it, the ladies saw it,

  757. the women saw it. If you follow Jesus,

  758. you're going to see Jesus love to the

  759. poor, to the lepers.

  760. Did he come?

  761. And everyone that that met Jesus talked

  762. about his love. Wow. He loved Lazarus.

  763. Incredible love that he gave us. Turn to

  764. Ephesians chapter 3.

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  765. How can we know the love of Jesus and we

  766. don't know Jesus?

  767. And we and we find him in his word. We

  768. follow him in his word. Here in

  769. Ephesians chapter 3,

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  770. he said, "My sheep hear my voice and I

  771. know them and they follow me."

  772. And the scriptures are the the voice of

  773. Jesus. Here it in Ephesians chapter 3

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  774. and verse

  775. 19.

  776. How did Paul know the love of Jesus? You

  777. know, he wasn't there when Peter fell

  778. down.

  779. said, "Depart from me, Lord." Paul comes

  780. along much later. But Paul spent time

  781. with Jesus.

  782. I don't know how it all happened. It we

  783. don't have all those details, but for

  784. weeks, months, Paul spent time with

  785. Jesus

  786. and he saw the love of Jesus.

  787. And if you're a sinner and you need

  788. mercy, you need grace and love, and he

  789. just pours it out on us.

  790. And that's what Paul says. Paul was a

  791. murderer. Would you choose a murderer to

  792. carry on your legacy?

  793. I don't think we would. We're not God

  794. though.

  795. But he can. You know, that's the

  796. greatness of our God. You know, it's not

  797. our sin doesn't limit him.

  798. You know, if we'll follow him, we'll

  799. walk with him, we will know these

  800. things.

  801. And Paul says here in verse 19,

  802. "And to know the love of Christ,

  803. how can we know the love of Christ if

  804. we're not in the word of God?"

  805. That's where we see it. We see his love

  806. for sinners. We see what he said to

  807. Peter, what he did for Peter, when Peter

  808. failed. When they all failed, when they

  809. scattered, when they ran, while he was

  810. hanging on the cross,

  811. they saw that love.

  812. and to know the love of Christ which

  813. passes knowledge. You want to know God?

  814. It's only through the love of Christ

  815. that you may come or that I may come

  816. and that you may be fulfilled with the

  817. fullness of God. It's not only brings

  818. knowledge, it fills us with the fullness

  819. of God. you you want to be filled,

  820. then find the love of Christ and don't

  821. leave it. You know, if we if we don't

  822. know God loves us, if you're saved,

  823. if you're unsaved, know that God loves

  824. you and you must come through Christ.

  825. That's the gospel. But now we're talking

  826. about those who are saved, those who

  827. know Christ, who are following him.

  828. We're following him in his love.

  829. And as a person he had for us sinners.

  830. And that's what Paul tells us here as

  831. well that the love of God

  832. passes all knowledge and we filled with

  833. the the fullness of God. And and now he

  834. just says unto him who was able. That

  835. should make us worship God to know that.

  836. Praise God for that. Now unto him who is

  837. able to do exceedingly abundantly above

  838. all that we ask or think according to

  839. the power that works in us. What works

  840. in us? The love of God through Christ.

  841. It's here. That's what we operate on.

  842. Unto him be the glory for the churches

  843. through Jesus Christ for all the ages. I

  844. mean, that's, you know, the the reality

  845. is that, you know, we still have our

  846. flesh and we still battle with our

  847. flesh, but God doesn't need our flesh.

  848. You know, just go ahead and leave it at

  849. the door. Let's, you know, crucify.

  850. Jesus said, "Crucify your flesh and

  851. follow me." So, everything comes from

  852. him. It's a gift.

  853. That's what chapter 4 is saying here

  854. as well. Look in verse seven.

  855. According to the measure of the gift of

  856. Christ. It's a gift. We can't earn the

  857. love of God. We can't earn salvation. We

  858. can't earn these precious and great

  859. things. We would not have them without

  860. the love of Christ. Now go to John 14.

  861. John chapter 14

    John 14:31

  862. verse 31.

  863. John 14:31, "But that the world may know

    John 14:31

  864. that I love the Father."

  865. What? You know, the his apostles knew he

  866. loved the Father.

  867. Um the Jews, some of them knew he he

  868. loved the Father.

  869. And and at Lazarus tomb, they saw it.

  870. Oh, how he loved Lazarus. But they also

  871. saw Jesus loving God the Father.

  872. That's why we need an example.

  873. We should love the father that sent his

  874. son. We should love God. He's a he's a

  875. spirit, but he's a father, son, and holy

  876. spirit. He's the godhead, you know, and

  877. they're they all have personalities and

  878. they all have

  879. uh great works that they have done.

  880. And when Jesus got done paying for our

  881. sins, the father said, "Here comes

  882. everything. We need nothing."

  883. So all the fullness is in Christ. Turn

  884. to Matthew chapter 5. Don't look

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  885. anywhere else.

  886. Matthew chapter 5 verse 17.

    Matthew 5:17

  887. Here is where

  888. you know here here Jesus is being an

  889. example for us again. Well, how do we

  890. get through the day? How do we get

  891. through the week? How do we get through

  892. the month? How do we get through the

  893. year?

  894. Well, here in John or excuse me, Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  895. chapter 5

  896. and verse 17,

  897. he says, "Think not that I've come to

  898. destroy the law and the prophets. I have

  899. come to destroy, but to fulfill."

  900. Well, remember

  901. what are the first two commandments?

  902. Or what are the two commandments Jesus

  903. said for us to keep?

  904. Love the Lord our God with all our

  905. heart, all our soul, all our mind. We

  906. can't do that. He did.

  907. And we saw it. We saw him love Peter. We

  908. seen him love his father. We seen him

  909. love the lepers.

  910. This man loved people in a great way.

  911. And that's what it says. He fulfilled

  912. it. You know, now we have his love. God

  913. said, "Love me with all your heart, your

  914. soul, your body, your strength." And

  915. Jesus is the one who did that.

  916. God said, "Love your neighbor."

  917. And we fail there, too. Jesus didn't

  918. fail. He loved his neighbors. And when

  919. we follow him, we go to the scriptures

  920. and we see him as the great example.

  921. Now turn back to chapter 4 while we're

  922. in Matthew back to the temptation, the

  923. testing.

  924. And here we see,

  925. you know, the walking and the following

  926. Jesus's,

  927. you know, his word and him are the same

  928. thing.

  929. So here he says in verse four, it is

  930. written

  931. that man shall not live by bread alone.

  932. We need to eat every day and go four

  933. days without water. But I we can't go or

  934. maybe it's the other way around. We have

  935. to have food every four days or we die.

  936. So bread is important. Eating is

  937. important. And Jesus said, "Listening to

  938. me is more important.

  939. Following me is more important.

  940. Listening to God is more important than

  941. eating."

  942. That's what the Psalmist says. That's

  943. what the Old Testament prophet said. And

  944. then he says in verse 7, it is written

  945. again, don't put the Lord your God to

  946. the test. So Jesus again responds with

  947. the word of God out of the mouth of God.

  948. That's what we have. Be gone Satan in

  949. verse 10. You will God says you will not

  950. you will worship the Lord and him only.

  951. Did Jesus worship anyone but the father?

  952. He's he's in the Godhead. He loved the

  953. father. He honored the father

  954. and he fulfilled this for us in a great

  955. way.

  956. Now turn to Luke chapter 4.

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  957. We just keep seeing these events in the

  958. life of Jesus that are showing us who he

  959. is and what he did and why he's here and

  960. what he told his apostles and you know

  961. what they said and reported to us in the

  962. word of God. Luke 4

  963. and verse 7.

  964. Oh, I'm sorry, 16. Luke 4:16. This is in

    Luke 4:16

  965. Nazareth.

  966. And after Bethlehem and after the

  967. dedication with Simeon and Anna in the

  968. in the temple, Joseph and Mary took off

  969. from Nazareth

  970. so Jesus could go to work.

  971. you know him coming to us, him

  972. understanding us

  973. and you know that's as his custom was.

  974. It says

  975. so they knew him. He had a reputation

  976. of loving, being kind and considerate

  977. and helping.

  978. And he's even going to have a greater

  979. impact when he begins his ministry.

  980. And it's it is beginning here because

  981. this is the first tour of Galilee. He's

  982. starting his ministry right here. Notice

  983. what he says.

  984. The spirit of the Lord is upon me

  985. because he has anointed me to preach the

  986. gospel to the poor.

  987. Remember,

  988. that's what the Old Testament said he

  989. would do. He wasn't going to come and

  990. land in the temple. He wasn't going to

  991. come and land in the, you know, the

  992. Pharisees

  993. uh um club or the Sadducees club.

  994. He come to the poor. He come to preach.

  995. the gospel

  996. and he sent me to heal the

  997. brokenhearted. That's who. Man, it's it

  998. it's a it's a sad thing to be

  999. brokenhearted. I mean, some some of you

1000. just went through incredible things in

  1001. your life.

  1002. That doesn't mean you can't associate

1003. with Jesus. No, that means you can.

1004. and to preach deliverance to the

1005. captives and to recover the sight of the

1006. blind and to set at liberty those that

1007. are um bruised. This to preach the

1008. acceptable day of the Lord. So here he

1009. is beginning his ministry now and we're

1010. going to look at his you know his his

1011. early apostles, his first disciples.

1012. There are things there for us to learn.

1013. We'll do that later on. Now, now turn

1014. over to Luke or I'm sorry, 24. Luke 24

    Luke 24:44

  1015. verse 44.

  1016. No, he was uh

1017. he he's our savior, you know, and that

1018. that's the greatest thing about him. God

1019. become a man to pay for our sins, but he

1020. is so much more. Don't stop when you get

1021. saved. say, "Well, I don't need Jesus

  1022. anymore." That's a huge mistake.

1023. He wants you to come. He wants you to

1024. know him. He wants you to follow him.

  1025. Whether you're a leper or whatever,

1026. doesn't matter. Our limitations do not

  1027. limit him.

1028. In Luke 24 and verse 44, and he said

  1029. unto them,

1030. and he puts the emphasis on the word,

1031. these are the words which I spoke unto

1032. you while I was with yet with you. You

1033. know, they heard him preach.

1034. They saw him preach. You know, they saw

1035. him heal the lepers. They saw him love,

  1036. you know, his enemies.

1037. Even Judas, he washed Judah's feet.

1038. Have you washed your betrayer's feet

  1039. yet?

  1040. No. Our savior has.

1041. He just has a great love for us.

1042. And he has been a great example in the

1043. word of God. These are the words which I

1044. spoke unto you while I was yet with you

1045. and that uh it must be fulfilled which

1046. is written the law of Moses. Jesus still

1047. talking about the word of God

1048. and in the prophets and in the psalms

  1049. concerning me.

1050. So the son of God come to earth and he

1051. said everything in that old testament is

1052. pointing to me. Follow me. No more

  1053. prophets,

1054. no more uh sacrifices, no more temple.

1055. He has cleared the way for us to worship

1056. God and to follow him. He's did all the

  1057. work

1058. and we are the beneficiaries of that.

1059. I got a couple things written down here.

1060. We won't turn to these verses, but

  1061. you're familiar with them.

1062. Jesus loved men who were not saved.

1063. You know, people struggle with that. How

1064. did you know this love thing? Jesus.

1065. That's why we study the person. That's

1066. what why we study the man. I don't care

1067. just about what he did. I want to know

  1068. what he said.

1069. I want to know him. That's that we say

1070. have a personal relationship with God.

  1071. That's the only way.

  1072. And that's a great way. Jesus said, "I

1073. am the way. I am the truth. I am the

1074. life. No man comes to the father but by

  1075. me."

1076. And we see him when he was in Galilee.

1077. And we're going to look at his ministry,

1078. you know, he he went out and he went

  1079. preaching and teaching.

1080. But I've got the rich young ruler that

1081. he loved. Um many of his enemies called

1082. him a friend of the publicans and

  1083. sinners,

1084. but he was an example in that, you know,

1085. he went there not to sin. He's the

  1086. sinless one.

  1087. Um, he went there

1088. that they might know him.

1089. That's usually who comes to faith, the

  1090. great sinners like Paul,

1091. like Peter. And when we get saved, we

1092. say, "Depart from me, Lord. I am a

  1093. filthy man."

1094. And you know, there's that verse in in

1095. in Romans 5:8 there where just I'll just

    Romans 5:8

1096. reference it and make a couple comments.

1097. But there it talks about the love of God

1098. and the Holy Spirit is given to us that

1099. we might know the love of God that might

1100. be spread above abroad in our hearts. So

1101. God says if you don't know about my

  1102. love, it's your fault. If you're a

1103. Christian and you don't know I love you,

1104. it's your fault, not mine.

1105. We have just had a tremendous love from

1106. heaven poured out upon us sinners

1107. through God's son. Go to Romans chapter

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1108. 8 and I'll quit.

1109. This a one of the greatest chapters in

  1110. the Bible.

  1111. Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

1112. You guys are familiar with it. We won't

1113. have to read it all.

1114. But in Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

1115. um, you know, this is about the Godhead

1116. here, the son of God,

1117. um, God the Father, the Spirit of God,

1118. all the Trinity is mentioned in here.

1119. And God has adopted us. You know, we

1120. went to the, remember, we went to the

1121. orphanage and we picked out the

1122. prettiest baby to take home.

1123. God didn't do that. He took the worst

  1124. ones. That's us.

1125. Why? So he could just show his

1126. incredible love and grace and mercy

  1127. for us sinners.

1128. And you know, I used uh after I got

1129. saved, you know, there were things that

1130. just in the word of God were easy to

1131. understand and get, but yet there were

1132. things that were not. And you know, I

1133. had people telling me one thing and

1134. other people telling me other things.

1135. And you know, as a young Christian, we

1136. all go through that. Who do we listen

  1137. to?

1138. And you know, the word of God is where

1139. it's at. When I finally got to Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1140. chapter 8, and I read this chapter, I

1141. don't know how many times, over and over

1142. and over, and it put to rest all the

1143. fear I had about losing my salvation.

  1144. That's assurance.

1145. And the this chapter says that the

1146. spirit bears witness in verse 16. The

1147. spirit himself bears witness with our

1148. spirit that we're the children of God.

1149. That's what happens. It happens in the

1150. scripture that we're assured of who God

1151. is and what God is. And he is holy. He

1152. is just. He is good. He's loving. He's

1153. kind. He's all these incredible things.

1154. And the chapter goes on at verse one,

1155. there is therefore now no condemnation

1156. to them that are in Christ. What a

1157. chapter this is. And I won't read it.

1158. You guys are familiar with it, but turn

  1159. over um to verse

  1160. 37.

  1161. And

1162. it's just incredible. and nothing can

1163. separate us from this love.

  1164. And I didn't say that. I didn't make

  1165. that up.

  1166. God said that

1167. he loves us and he sent his son for us

1168. that we might be just like him. And here

1169. in verse 37, nay in all these things we

1170. are more than conquerors through our

1171. great faith or or our great works, our

1172. great effort. No, through him that loved

  1173. us.

1174. Jesus loves us. God loves us.

1175. And the love of God passes all knowledge

1176. as Paul said in Ephesians. And then Paul

  1177. says, "I'm persuaded."

1178. So there must have been a time when he

  1179. wasn't.

  1180. There was a time when I wasn't, but I am

  1181. now. I'm persuaded.

1182. Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor

1183. principalities, nor powers, nor things

1184. present, nor things to come. Quite a

  1185. list,

  1186. nor height, nor depth,

  1187. nor any other creation,

1188. will be able to separate us from what?

1189. The love of God which is in Christ Jesus

1190. our Lord. this man Jesus and his father

1191. and the Holy Spirit love us greatly and

1192. he come to us. We're poor. We're

1193. wretched sinners. We we should we don't

  1194. deserve any of this.

1195. But it's a great gift that God has given

1196. to us through his amazing son.

1197. And you know Jesus loved his enemies. Oh

  1198. Judas,

  1199. what an example.

1200. And he's the one that said, "Love your

1201. enemies." Not me. He did. And here he

1202. said, you know, that nothing can

1203. separate us from the love of God which

1204. is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1205. Let's pray. Father, we thank you for

1206. this day. Thank you for the opportunity

1207. we've had to be in your word tonight.

1208. We've been looking at your son,

1209. Lord Jesus. us what an incredible life

  1210. you lived.

1211. Not only did good, but you loved.

1212. Not only did good, but you were gracious

1213. and kind to sinners. You loved sinners.

1214. You still love sinners. And that's all

  1215. we are.

1216. And we've been redeemed through your

1217. precious blood. And we thank you

1218. for that. As Paul wrote here in Romans,

1219. what a verse that nothing can separate

1220. us from the love of God which is in

  1221. Christ Jesus our Lord.

1222. You loved us greatly. Father, help us to

1223. love you back. We pray Jesus name. Amen.

  1224. >> Amen.

  1225. from this place,

  1226. loving you more,

  1227. trusting you more.

1228. May the power of your love and the light

1229. of your word shine to a sin darkened

1230. world. As we go from this place,
