  1. be back in the pulpit here.

  2. my time away.

  3. We're continuing in Jeremiah. I'd like

  4. you to look in Jeremiah 25.

  5. Remember, this Sunday morning,

  6. uh we have a missionaries from

  7. Argentina.

  8. And uh they will be with us. And that's

  9. James Morrell, his wife Danielle,

  10. and his What is it?

  11. >> Donnel.

  12. And the 13-year-old daughter,

  13. uh they will be with us. They have more

  14. children, but they're just have the one

  15. with them on this trip.

  16. So, we're he's the field director of uh

  17. the country of Argentina

  18. for Gospel Mission South America. I just

  19. left them when I was on my trip.

  20. Uh we were running around together for 2

  21. weeks.

  22. So, looking forward to seeing them here.

  23. They will just be here

  24. uh late Saturday and

  25. early Sunday for Sunday morning.

  26. And then they got they're going up to

  27. Salem Bible Church for the evening.

  28. So, it's going to be a zoom in, zoom

  29. out.

  30. I call your attention to the book of

  31. Jeremiah chapter 25.

    Jeremiah 25 chapter mention

  32. Chapter 25.

  33. And I'm going to be reading from the ESV

  34. tonight instead of the King James.

  35. But uh Jeremiah 25.

  36. The word that came to Jeremiah

  37. concerning all the people of Judah

  38. in the fourth year of Jehoiakim, the son

  39. of Josiah, king of Judah,

  40. that was the first year of

  41. Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. So,

  42. this is dated. We got a date. We You

  43. exactly when

  44. this particular prophecy was given by

  45. God.

  46. What Jeremiah the prophet spoke to all

  47. the people of Judah and all the

  48. inhabitants of Jerusalem.

  49. For 23 years

  50. from the 13th year of Josiah the son of

  51. Amon king of Judah to this day the word

  52. of the Lord has come to me. So at this

  53. when this message was given Jeremiah had

  54. been in the ministry in Jerusalem for 23

  55. years.

  56. And has spoken persistently to you

  57. but you've not listened. How many of us

  58. have kids you have to tell them third

  59. third third third time to get anything

  60. done?

  61. Well, Jeremiah kept saying it and saying

  62. it saying it and nobody's getting it.

  63. And sometimes that's us too, isn't it?

  64. If we're just honest with ourselves.

  65. Uh and so uh

  66. but anyway after 23 years of of of uh

  67. speaking the same kind of thing

  68. uh

  69. he says

  70. verse four, you've neither listened nor

  71. inclined your ears to hear. Although the

  72. Lord persistently sent to you all his

  73. servants the prophets saying, "Turn now

  74. every one of you from his evil way and

  75. evil deeds and dwell upon the land that

  76. the Lord's given you and your fathers

  77. from of old forever."

  78. So Jeremiah wasn't the only one.

  79. Other prophets God raised up and were

  80. saying the same thing.

  81. You know

  82. if you're going in a path that's not

  83. right

  84. and your family comes to you and say,

  85. "This is not good."

  86. And your pastor comes to you and says

  87. "This is not good."

  88. And your best friend comes to you and

  89. say,

  90. "This is not good."

  91. Sooner or later you to get the idea,

  92. right?

  93. And so

  94. over and over and over again, like a

  95. what

  96. like one of those old records on my

  97. grand- grandma's player where

  98. it hits the bump and it

  99. And and so over and over and over again

  100. uh

  101. the same message was going out to the

  102. nation.

  103. Time was running out.

  104. The time for warning

  105. the time for repentance

  106. the time for uh listening

  107. is running short.

  108. And so it's that's that's today, too,

  109. isn't it?

  110. Whether it we're dealing with Israel or

  111. the unbelievers around us or churches

  112. that are not what they ought to be or

  113. people, the time for repentance is

  114. getting shorter

  115. every day.

  116. So it says in verse 6, "Do not go after

  117. other gods to serve and worship them or

  118. provoke me to anger with the work of

  119. your hands.

  120. Then I'll do you no harm."

  121. Give it Give it up on the idolatry. And

  122. those of you that have been with us for

  123. this class, Anthony's joining us here

  124. tonight, but

  125. 70 times in this book, it mentions

  126. idolatry.

  127. They had a big problem.

  128. And Jerusalem is the capital of the

  129. nation but it's also the

  130. place where the Jewish temple is. It's

  131. the holy city, and the holy city is not

  132. holy. The holy city is in idolatry and

  133. immorality and all kinds of other

  134. things.

  135. And so in verse 6, "Do not go after

  136. other gods to serve and worship them or

  137. provoke me to anger with the work of

  138. your hands. Then I'll do you no harm.

  139. Yet you have not listened to me,

  140. declares the Lord, that you might

  141. provoke me to anger with the work of

  142. your hands to do your own heart. The

  143. work of their hands, they became idol

  144. builders.

  145. As you've heard me quote one famous uh

  146. reformer,

  147. our hearts are idol factories.

  148. Your heart, my heart, we're going to

  149. produce an idols. Something we love more

  150. than God, something that keeps us aback

  151. from doing the right thing.

  152. Therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts,

  153. because you've not obeyed my words,

  154. behold, I'll send all the tribes of the

  155. north,

  156. declares the Lord, and for

  157. Nebuchadnezzar,

  158. king of Babylon, my servant. We call him

  159. Nebuchadnezzar. This text calls him

  160. Nebuchadnezzar.

  161. His

  162. His Chaldean name is Nabû-kudurri-uṣur,

  163. according to my Hebrew professor.

  164. Nebuchadnezzar's hard enough to

  165. pronounce.

  166. But my my servant, he's calling

  167. Nebuchadnezzar my servant. He This is an

  168. unsaved servant. God uses unsaved

  169. people. God uses wicked nations to

  170. publish punish

  171. other wicked nations.

  172. We should remember that in America,

  173. right?

  174. We may be in for a bigger spanking than

  175. we expect.

  176. We may be surprised who gives it to us.

  177. And I'll bring them against this land

  178. and its inhabitants and against all

  179. these surrounding nations. I'll

  180. devote them to destruction and make a

  181. horror and a hissing and an everlasting

  182. destruction. So, that sounds pretty bad.

  183. Moreover, I will banish from them the

  184. voice of mirth and the voice of

  185. gladness, the voice of the bridegroom

  186. and the voice of the bride, and the

  187. grinding of the millstone and the light

  188. of the lamp. And people aren't going to

  189. get married, people aren't going to be

  190. doing their business. It's everything's

  191. topsy-turvy and

  192. uh there's no stability, there's no

  193. uh rest.

  194. This whole land shall become a ruin and

  195. a waste, and these nations shall serve

  196. the king of Babylon 70 [snorts] years.

  197. Now, this is extremely important.

  198. Where have we heard that 70 years

  199. before?

  200. In the Bible.

  201. >> Daniel.

  202. >> Daniel. Guess where Daniel got it.

  203. He got it from Jeremiah.

  204. Daniel was reading Jeremiah.

  205. And he was reading this chapter.

  206. And what Daniel read produced the

  207. prophecy in Daniel.

  208. This is very interesting stuff.

  209. Cuz the 70 years is a very important

  210. subject in the Bible.

  211. And he Daniel Daniel didn't make it up.

  212. He was reading We're going to turn to

  213. Daniel and we'll see it. He was reading

  214. Jeremiah

  215. in Babylon.

  216. Now, Jeremiah was ministering in

  217. Jerusalem. Daniel was in Babylon. But

  218. Jeremiah's

  219. uh book got into Daniel's hands in

  220. Babylon.

  221. Interesting, isn't it?

  222. And then he says, "Oh, verse 11, the

  223. whole land shall become a ruin and

  224. waste, and these nations shall serve the

  225. king of Babylon 70 years." He's talking

  226. about the Gentile nations around Israel

  227. that are in idolatry. Then after 70

  228. years are completed, I will punish the

  229. king of Babylon and that nation, the

  230. land of the Chaldeans, for their

  231. iniquity, declares the Lord, making the

  232. land an everlasting waste. Which he did.

  233. Do you remember the handwriting on the

  234. wall wall? Mene, mene, tekel, upharsin.

  235. You're weighed in the balance and found

  236. wanting, Belshazzar.

  237. So, God did what he prophesied here.

  238. I'll bring on the land all the words

  239. that I've uttered against it, everything

  240. written in the book of which Jeremiah

  241. prophesied against all the nations. For

  242. many nations and great kings shall make

  243. slaves even of them, and I'll recompense

  244. them according to their deeds and the

  245. work of their hands.

  246. So, we There's several things going on

  247. here. God's going to punish the Gentile

  248. nations right around Israel. God's going

  249. to punish

  250. Israel, and he's going to punish the

  251. nations, a second group of nations, and

  252. the rest of the world. It's a big

  253. prophecy. It's a very big prophecy.

  254. Thus the Lord God of Israel said to me,

  255. "Take from my hand this cup of the wine

  256. of wrath.

  257. And make all the nations to whom I send

  258. you drink it.

  259. They shall drink and stagger and be

  260. crazed

  261. because of the sword

  262. that I'm sending

  263. among them."

  264. I'm going to stop my reading right

  265. there, and let's get started. Let's

  266. Let's just think about what we're

  267. getting into here.

  268. This chastening and correcting of God's

  269. people, Israel, was predicted here in

  270. great detail.

  271. God told him what he was going to do,

  272. and then he did it.

  273. Um

  274. When you were a child, you probably

  275. weren't like this, but I was. My mother

  276. would tell me, "You do this and you're

  277. getting three whacks."

  278. I mean, she would even tell how many.

  279. And so, what God is doing here, he's

  280. he's a

  281. making it very clear before it happens

  282. what's going to happen and why it's

  283. going to happen.

  284. So, my mom just didn't grab me and start

  285. whacking, you know. I knew why I was

  286. getting it. I knew how many I was going

  287. to get.

  288. And after the first two hit, I knew

  289. there was going to be a third.

  290. So, God is very clear on what he's going

  291. to do and why he's going to do it and

  292. who he's going to do it to.

  293. He's going to punish Israel, they get

  294. their whacks. He's going to punish the

  295. nations around Israel

  296. and they're going to get their whacks

  297. and he's going to punish the whole

  298. world, they're going to get their

  299. whacks.

  300. This This moves out of the immediate

  301. situation and goes into the ultimate

  302. judgment at the end of time.

  303. For all nations.

  304. Uh

  305. And this prophecy

  306. uh

  307. is given

  308. in a wonderful way.

  309. Charles Feinberg, Hebrew scholar,

  310. wonderful Christian man,

  311. said this prophecy is precisely dated to

  312. show its extraordinary significance.

  313. Remember the early parts of this verse?

  314. It gave the time.

  315. So, God put a prophecy in. He He dated

  316. it.

  317. The date is given in those first verses.

  318. And we know what's coming.

  319. Now, Daniel as an old man

  320. begins to read this very prophecy from

  321. this very book.

  322. And

  323. uh this is a fascinating thing.

  324. 66 years later,

  325. time is almost up.

  326. God said 70 years. It's 66 years. Daniel

  327. in chapter 9 verse 1 realizes, "Hey, the

  328. time's almost up." Jeremiah gave a

  329. prophecy.

  330. And he starts to read it in Daniel

    Daniel 9:1

  331. chapter 9 verse 1 and 2. Oh, can you

  332. turn there with me?

  333. Now,

  334. Babylon's gone.

  335. The Persians are running The Iranians

  336. are running things, the Persians.

  337. And in the first year of Darius, the son

  338. of Ahasuerus,

  339. by descent a Med, who was made king over

  340. the realm of the Chaldeans, in the first

  341. year of his reign, I Daniel perceived in

  342. books the number of years that according

  343. to the word of the Lord to who?

  344. From who?

  345. Jeremiah.

  346. So, guess what? Daniel's in Babylon,

  347. Jeremiah was in Jerusalem, and somehow

  348. Jeremiah's writings got to Babylon.

  349. And Daniel had them,

  350. and as an old man, he's reading them and

  351. he's thinking, "Time's almost up.

  352. God's going to get us out of here.

  353. We're going to return.

  354. But there's also chastening going to

  355. happen.

  356. According to the word of the Lord to

  357. Jeremiah the prophet must pass before

  358. the end of the desolations of Jerusalem,

  359. namely 70 years.

  360. So, what does Daniel do

  361. when he reads the book of Jeremiah?

  362. He starts to pray.

  363. And we get so excited about the prophecy

  364. that comes to Daniel at the end of this

  365. chapter, we forget the wonderful prayer

  366. that was prayed

  367. in response to the earlier prophecy.

  368. Daniel in verse 3 turns his face to the

  369. Lord and seeking it by prayer and pleas

  370. for the mercy with fasting and sackcloth

  371. and ashes.

  372. So, Daniel's getting on his knees.

  373. And he's asking God to do

  374. what he has told he said in the book of

  375. Jeremiah

  376. to do.

  377. And I'll just turn it down to verse 19.

  378. "O Lord, hear. O Lord, forgive. O Lord,

  379. pay attention and act. Delay not for

  380. your own sake, my my God, because your

  381. city and your people are called by your

  382. name." And then of course the angel

  383. comes and he learns all about the 70

  384. weeks and and that this prophecies

  385. doesn't just deal with the immediate

  386. present but the ultimate

  387. times in history in that wonderful

  388. section

  389. of scripture. He gets his answer.

  390. So, it's a fascinating thing.

  391. Uh

  392. Philip Ryken calls it the Olympics of

  393. divine judgment and all the nations of

  394. the earth were there.

  395. And you know, nations all go to the

  396. Olympics. Well, God's saying all the

  397. nations are going to the judgment.

  398. And then he said, "When God serves the

  399. drinks, no one is allowed to be a

  400. teetotaler."

  401. God's going to talk about a cup of wrath

  402. that everybody's going to drink.

  403. And uh

  404. it's going to get pretty serious here.

  405. Go with me now to Jeremiah 25 and let's

  406. uh

  407. look at verse 2

  408. verse

  409. uh

  410. Where did I stop?

  411. Verse I I stopped at 14, didn't I?

  412. Let's read in verse 25. 15, I'm sorry.

  413. Thus says the Lord the God of Israel

  414. said to me, "Take from my hand" This is

  415. what the Lord says, "This cup of the

  416. wine of wrath

  417. and make all nations to whom I send you

  418. drink it."

  419. No teetotalers in this place.

  420. Everybody's got to drink it.

  421. "They shall drink and stagger and be

  422. crazed because of the sword that I'm

  423. sending against them."

  424. So, verse 17, 25:17. "I took the cup

  425. from the Lord's hand and made all

  426. nations to whom the Lord sent me drink

  427. it. Jerusalem and the cities of Judah,

  428. its kings and officials to make them a

  429. desolation and a west waste and a

  430. hissing and a curse as it is this day.

  431. Pharaoh, king of Egypt" That's the

  432. nations that were out at that time. "His

  433. servants, his officials, all his people,

  434. and all the mixed tribes among them, all

  435. the kings of the land of Uz, and the

  436. kings of the land of the Philistines,

  437. Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant

  438. of Ashdod, Edom, Moab, the sons of

  439. Ammon, all the kings of Tyre" Now he's

  440. widening out. "And all the kings of

  441. Sidon, and the kings of the coastlands

  442. of the sea, Dedan, Tema, Buz, and all

  443. who cut the corners in their hair, and

  444. all the kings of the Arabia, and the

  445. kings of the mixed tribes who dwell in

  446. the desert, all the kings of Zimri, all

  447. the kings of Elam, all the kings of

  448. Media, and all the kings of the north

  449. far and near, one after another, and all

  450. the kings of the world that are on the

  451. face of the earth." Wow, that's

  452. expanding, isn't it? That's quite a

  453. judgment.

  454. "And after them the king of Babylon

  455. shall drink."

  456. And we moved into end times here,

  457. haven't we?

  458. We're not in Jeremiah's time. We're not

  459. even in Daniel's time. We're moving out

  460. to end time judgment.

  461. "And you'll say to them, "Thus says the

  462. Lord of God of Israel, drink and be

  463. drunk and vomit, fall and rise no more

  464. because of the sword that I'm sending

  465. among you."

  466. And if they refuse to accept the cup

  467. from your hand to drink, then you'll

  468. say, "Thus says the Lord, you must

  469. drink."

  470. It's like my mom catching me as a little

  471. boy with a some Lucky Strikes in my

  472. in my dresser.

  473. She made me eat one.

  474. I didn't want to do it, but she wouldn't

  475. stop.

  476. God said, "You must drink.

  477. You must drink."

  478. And so,

  479. that's the picture.

  480. For behold, I begin to work disaster,

  481. verse 29,

  482. at the city that's called by my name.

  483. What's that?

  484. Jerusalem.

  485. And shall you go unpunished? In other

  486. words, if I'm punishing Jerusalem, you

  487. think I'm not going to punish you?

  488. You shall not go unpunished, for I'm a

  489. summoning sword against all the

  490. inhabitants of the earth, declares the

  491. Lord of hosts. And again, we're moving

  492. from

  493. Jerusalem judgment to the judgments of

  494. the nations of Jeremiah's day around

  495. Jerusalem to the judgment of the world

  496. at the end of history.

  497. You therefore shall prophesy against

  498. them all these words and say to them,

  499. "The Lord will roar from on high and

  500. from his holy habitation utter his

  501. voice. He'll roar mightily against his

  502. fold and shout like those who read tread

  503. grapes against all the inhabitants of

  504. the earth, and clamor the clamor will

  505. resound to the ends of the earth, for

  506. the Lord has an indictment against the

  507. nations. He's entering into judgment

  508. with all flesh, and the wicked will he

  509. put to the sword." Sound like the book

  510. of Revelation, doesn't it? You know why?

  511. Cuz it is.

  512. This is the same kind of thing.

  513. Thus says the Lord of hosts, "Behold,

  514. disaster, verse 32,

  515. is going forth from nation to nation,

  516. and a great tempest is stirring from the

  517. farthest parts of the earth.

  518. And those pierced by the Lord on that

  519. day shall extend from one end of the

  520. earth to the other. They'll not be

  521. lamented or gathered or buried. They

  522. shall be dung on the face of the ground.

  523. Wail, you shepherds, and cry out, and

  524. roll in ashes, you lords of the flock,

  525. for the days of your slaughter and

  526. dispersion have come, and you shall fall

  527. like a choice vessel. No refuge will

  528. remain for the shepherds, nor escape for

  529. the lords of the flock. A voice and a

  530. cry of shepherds and the wail of the

  531. lords of the flock, for the Lord is

  532. laying waste

  533. their pasture, and the peaceful folds

  534. are devastated because of the fierce

  535. anger of the Lord. Like a lion, he's

  536. left his lair, for their land has become

  537. a waste because of the sword of the

  538. oppressor and because of his fierce

  539. anger. These are amazing, stunning

  540. prophecies.

  541. So, Daniel's reading this as a He He He

  542. He knew this prophecy as a young man.

  543. He's now reading it as a as an old man,

  544. and it became the catalyst for his

  545. prayer

  546. for the every everything that God was

  547. saying.

  548. Now, you see the same 70 weeks in 2

  549. Chronicles 36:14-29.

  550. Will you look over there with me? 2

  551. Chronicles 36.

  552. End of 2 Chronicles.

  553. And 36 is the last chapter in 2

  554. Chronicles. It's 1st, 2nd Kings, 1st,

  555. 2nd Chronicles.

  556. Chapter 36 and verse 14.

  557. All the officers of the priest and of

  558. the people likewise were exceedingly

  559. unfaithful following all the

  560. abominations of the nations. They

  561. polluted the house of the Lord that he

  562. had made holy in Jerusalem. The Lord the

  563. God of their fathers sent persistently

  564. to them by his messengers plural.

  565. Jeremiah wasn't the only one because he

  566. had compassion on his people and his

  567. dwelling place. But they kept mocking

  568. the messengers of God, despising his

  569. words, scoffing at his prophets until

  570. the wrath of the Lord rose against his

  571. people and there was no remedy.

  572. Therefore, he brought up against them

  573. the kings of the Chaldeans

  574. who killed their young men with the

  575. sword in the house of their sanctuary

  576. and had no compassion on the young man

  577. or the virgin or the old man or the

  578. aged. He gave them all into his hand.

  579. And all the vessels of the house of God,

  580. great and small, the treasures of the

  581. house of the Lord, the treasures of the

  582. king and of his princes, all these he

  583. brought to Babylon. These prophecies are

  584. mixed in together, right? In other

  585. words, the prophet saw the judgment of

  586. the first temple

  587. and the end time judgments mixed

  588. together back to back like

  589. mountains. They didn't see the valley in

  590. between.

  591. It's typical of prophecy. And they

  592. burned, verse 19, the house of God,

  593. broke down the wall of Jerusalem, burned

  594. all his palaces with fire, destroyed all

  595. his precious vessels. He took into exile

  596. in Babylon those who'd escaped from the

  597. sword and they became servants to him

  598. and to his sons in the establishment of

  599. the kingdom of Persia to fulfill the

  600. word of the Lord by the mouth of

  601. Jeremiah. Again, we're coming back to

  602. Jeremiah until the land had enjoyed its

  603. Sabbaths all the days that it lay

  604. desolate, it kept Sabbath to fulfill 70

  605. years.

  606. Now, what's going on here? They were

  607. supposed They were supposed to have a

  608. Sabbath, remember? And and what a

  609. Sabbath year. Not just a Sabbath day,

  610. the seventh day, seventh year no work on

  611. the land.

  612. For 490 years they didn't do that.

  613. And so God took it.

  614. You owe me 70 years.

  615. You owe me those Sabbath years that you

  616. didn't do during that period.

  617. And so they're 70 years in Babylon

  618. because for 490 years they wouldn't do

  619. what God told them to do. And that's a

  620. hard assignment. You're not to work the

  621. field this year, let the field rest, do

  622. something else, become a jeweler or

  623. potter or

  624. you know, a carpenter, do something

  625. else. You can do something else, but you

  626. can't work the land. It's got to rest.

  627. It's like there was a Sabbath day rest,

  628. there was a Sabbath year rest for the

  629. land. And by the way, that's good

  630. agriculture, right? Land's got to

  631. recover itself.

  632. They wouldn't do it, wouldn't do it,

  633. they

  634. And finally God said, "All right, I'm

  635. taking it all at once.

  636. You know, you're not doing what I'm

  637. saying. Yeah, it's just we're going to

  638. get You owe me 70 years of the land

  639. needs to rest for 400 uh every four

  640. It's been 490 years and you owe me 70 of

  641. those years

  642. for Sabbath years and I'm getting them."

  643. So, what's this teach us? It teaches us

  644. one thing, when God says something, he

  645. means it.

  646. When God says, "This is what you're

  647. supposed to do," guess what? That's what

  648. you're supposed to do.

  649. There's no room for

  650. uh uh

  651. ignoring it, there's no room for

  652. twisting it and making it say something

  653. it doesn't say.

  654. God said it, I believe it, that settles

  655. it. And if it It settles it whether I

  656. believe it or not.

  657. Cuz God said it.

  658. This is a precious thing. When God says

  659. something, it's true.

  660. God holds us to it. God holds himself to

  661. it.

  662. And all that's very practical.

  663. So, all these things are very

  664. interesting to me.

  665. Uh and I love these interactions. You

  666. also see something similar in Zechariah

    Zechariah 1:12–17

  667. 1:12 to 17.

  668. I won't go to that one.

  669. It's impossible to measure the

  670. significance

  671. of Jeremiah's prophecies.

  672. Especially this one about the 70 years.

  673. But Jeremiah looked like a failure.

  674. Nobody listened to him.

  675. Nobody liked him. His hometown didn't

  676. like him. They tried to kill him, his

  677. hometown.

  678. And when he preached the temple sermon,

  679. that everybody got mad. Who do you think

  680. you are?

  681. They They were extremely upset with him.

  682. And I believe he was a lonely man, don't

  683. you?

  684. We've been studying Jeremiah, he was

  685. lonely.

  686. He had nobody.

  687. God told him he couldn't marry.

  688. And so he couldn't get married. He had

  689. no no wife to encourage him, no family

  690. to encourage him. His hometown hated

  691. him, tried to kill him.

  692. Now, if your hometown hates you, what

  693. about everybody else?

  694. So,

  695. but Jeremiah

  696. looked like a failure cuz nobody

  697. responded to what he said.

  698. One of the kings tore up the book of

  699. Jeremiah and burned it in the fire.

  700. So, Jeremiah outwardly failed.

  701. Nobody listened.

  702. Everybody went on like they were doing.

  703. The king burned his

  704. burned the first book of Jeremiah. They

  705. had to rewrite it.

  706. We haven't got to that yet, but we will.

  707. So, Jeremiah didn't look very

  708. successful, did he?

  709. But he was.

  710. And uh

  711. I want you to think about this to me

  712. this is a very important point.

  713. Many a prophet

  714. many a preacher or pastor

  715. may

  716. never even begin to imagine the effects

  717. the vast effects

  718. uh and the visible achievements of their

  719. ministry in their lifetime.

  720. There's an awful lot, you know, there's

  721. big-time preachers that live in big

  722. houses, and flying planes, and doing all

  723. kinds of goofy stuff. I'm not talking

  724. about them. But there's a lot of good

  725. preachers in big churches, but there's a

  726. lot of good preachers in little

  727. churches.

  728. And people think, "Well, they didn't do

  729. anything. Why didn't they have a bigger

  730. church?"

  731. Well, some ground's harder to plow than

  732. others.

  733. Some places are harder to reach than

  734. others, right?

  735. You think Athens is an easy place?

  736. No, you live here. You know it's not.

  737. Not spiritually. It's I It's actually a

  738. great place to live other than the fact

  739. that the spiritual temperature is pretty

  740. low.

  741. But

  742. Jeremiah was living in a time

  743. when it looked like he was a total

  744. failure. He couldn't make anybody

  745. listen. He tried everything. He kept at

  746. it. He just kept making people mad.

  747. They finally threw him in a cistern and

  748. said, "Stay down there a while. Cool

  749. off."

  750. So,

  751. many a preacher

  752. maybe has never or in this life will

  753. ever see their effects of their ministry

  754. the way God does.

  755. And many a preacher or pastor or prophet

  756. has achieved effects that vastly

  757. outweigh his current visible

  758. achievements.

  759. Jeremiah's a case in point.

  760. It took Daniel 60 some years later to

  761. read his prophecy.

  762. And get begin to pray and then get the

  763. other prophecy of the Messiah coming.

  764. It's so important in the Bible.

  765. One man labors, another enters into his

  766. labor, right?

  767. And so we're not good uh

  768. we're not good measures of our own

  769. ministries as a church or as

  770. individuals.

  771. Many times we're doing more than we even

  772. imagine.

  773. Even the best people, even the most

  774. successful people

  775. never in this life know

  776. the real success of their ministry.

  777. You think You know, George Whitfield

  778. died in his 50s.

  779. Wesley lived a lot longer.

  780. But do you think George Whitfield or

  781. John Wesley or D.L. Moody or Charles

  782. Spurgeon lived long enough to really see

  783. the magnitude of their ministry?

  784. No.

  785. No. Nobody does. You don't. I don't.

  786. One person

  787. in our church might do more for the Lord

  788. than the big churches have ever

  789. produced.

  790. But we don't live to see it

  791. in this life.

  792. Well, what what's it going to happen

  793. then? In the the Beema seat of Christ,

  794. at the judgment seat of Christ. That's

  795. when we're going to see our ministry.

  796. Not in this life.

  797. We're not going to see the full resort

  798. results of our ministry. We might see

  799. the opposite.

  800. What did Paul say in Thessalonians?

  801. What's my joy of rejoicing? Even you in

  802. the prep prep prep presence of the Lord

  803. that is coming.

  804. I'm going to be excited when I see you

  805. in heaven.

  806. And what's the judgment seat of Christ

  807. all about? A reviewing and a

  808. And the judgment seat of Christ is a

  809. reviewing and a receiving and a and a

  810. and a a rewarding.

  811. It's a revealing, a reviewing, and a

  812. rewarding.

  813. And we're going to find out things

  814. happen, maybe that

  815. maybe we won one person and they won

  816. 100.

  817. Then that 100 went out and won another

  818. 100.

  819. Do you realize God's math is different

  820. than yours? And we measure our life by

  821. our lifetime, but that's a poor

  822. measurement.

  823. And I think that's a very important

  824. thing. 1 Corinthians 3:13, 2 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 3:13 2 Corinthians 5:10

  825. 5:10, we're all going to appear at the

  826. judgment seat of Christ and receive in

  827. the body that the the things we've done

  828. in the body, uh uh wood, hay, stubble,

  829. or gold, precious stones.

  830. There's going to be a reviewing. There's

  831. going to be a receiving.

  832. There's going to be a rewarding.

  833. Then.

  834. We don't get that in the middle of our

  835. life. We don't get that at the end of

  836. our life. We get it

  837. then.

  838. And so

  839. it's just a it's a fascinating fact. So,

  840. maybe one of you will lead one person to

  841. the Lord.

  842. They don't do too much for the Lord as

  843. far as you could tell, but they got

  844. saved. But then that person leads

  845. another person to the Lord, and that

  846. person that that you led to the Lord led

  847. another person to the Lord, and that

  848. person becomes a great missionary.

  849. Wins a whole city.

  850. And you know nothing about it because

  851. you didn't live long enough.

  852. >> [laughter]

  853. >> And you get to heaven and where's all

  854. these people? I mean, I get rewarded for

  855. this? I don't I thought I won one.

  856. Yeah, you won one and that one won one

  857. and that one won 100,000 or something.

  858. So, you don't know who's doing a big

  859. ministry or who's doing a little

  860. ministry. You don't know.

  861. That's the point I'm trying to get

  862. across. It it's a to me it's a very,

  863. very important point. The ministry of

  864. God's people is greater than they

  865. realize in this life.

  866. Nobody knows in this life.

  867. Now, all of our ministries are bigger

  868. than we deserve.

  869. And

  870. yet having said all of that,

  871. I'm sure a lot of the things we thought

  872. were good stuff, and God said, "Ah,

  873. that's kind of okay, but this one you

  874. really did good over here. This one this

  875. one really produced something. I used

  876. you in spite of yourself."

  877. So,

  878. important. Second lesson to take home is

  879. the chastening or correcting of God's

  880. people is the guarantee of his judgment

  881. on the lost.

  882. The chastening and correcting of God's

  883. people is the guarantee of God's

  884. judgment on the lost. If sin God doesn't

  885. let sin go in us,

  886. what's going to happen to the ones that

  887. aren't saved?

  888. That's Peter's argument, by the way.

  889. In 1 Peter 4:17 to 18. Would somebody

    1 Peter 4:17–18

  890. open open their Bible and read that? 1

    1 Peter 4:17

  891. Peter 4:17 and 18.

  892. Who wants to read that?

  893. Read it loud, sir.

  894. >> 4:17 to 18?

  895. >> Yeah.

  896. >> All right.

  897. For the time is come for judgment to

  898. begin at the house of God.

  899. And if it begins with us first, what

  900. will be the end of those who do not obey

  901. the gospel of God?

  902. And if the righteous one is scarcely

  903. saved, where will the ungodly sinner

  904. appear?

  905. >> Okay, somebody read Amos 3:2.

    Amos 3:2

  906. Amos 3:2.

    Amos 3:2

  907. >> Okay.

  908. >> Okay, you can read that. You're fast on

  909. the draw, wife.

  910. >> Okay, 3:2.

  911. Um

  912. Amos 3:2, "You only have I known of all

    Amos 3:2

  913. the families of the earth, therefore I

  914. will punish you for all your

  915. iniquities."

  916. >> That's a good one, right? You have

  917. special privileges. I've known you, you

  918. know me,

  919. and therefore more's expected of you.

  920. And therefore I'm chastening you. So,

  921. but the logic here is, again, 1 Peter,

  922. if God doesn't let sin go in his own

  923. people, he's not going to let it go in

  924. others. So, I've told you many, many

  925. times, my friend Leslie Sims, he

  926. uh my mom he he the mom locked him out,

  927. he lived at our house every summer. He'd

  928. play with us kids, we'd get into

  929. honoring us, sometimes it was me,

  930. sometimes it was him. When mom's when

  931. when I deserved a spanking, I got one.

  932. When he deserved a spanking, he got one.

  933. And my mom said, "If I'm going to raise

  934. him,

  935. I'm going to spank him."

  936. She didn't love but she did it.

  937. And so, if my Leslie should have been a

  938. little smarter, if this woman spanks her

  939. own kids, and I hang out here and I

  940. start a fight with somebody,

  941. uh I I'm probably going to get the board

  942. too as well.

  943. Now, my mom would end up in jail for

  944. doing that now, but in those days it was

  945. kind of common, right? In the '50s.

  946. People would call out other people's

  947. kids if they were not doing right.

  948. Especially the men, but my mom, she'd do

  949. it, too.

  950. So, this is fascinating. Uh

  951. Derek Kidner said,

  952. "Judgment must begin with the household

  953. of God." That's a principle. And that's

  954. what we just saw.

  955. So, the chastening of God's people is a

  956. guarantee that his that he will judge

  957. the lost.

  958. "You don't think I'm a holy God? You

  959. don't think I'm a uh a God that deals

  960. with the sin? If I do it with my own

  961. people, what am I going to do with those

  962. that aren't my own?"

  963. Warren Wiersbe, he he talks about all

  964. the wonderful vivid images in this

  965. chapter. Cup of wrath,

  966. roaring lion, wine press, lawsuit,

  967. storm, uh broken pottery, slaughtered

  968. flock. There's a lot of images here

  969. to keep put things in your mind.

  970. So, let's step back a minute. The

  971. correction of the Jewish nation is

  972. verses 1 to 11. The judgment on the

  973. Gentiles is verses 12 to the end.

  974. That's the logic. And by the way, when

  975. we get to the end of the book of

  976. Jeremiah, he's going to pick out some

  977. nations and say exactly what each one's

  978. going to get.

  979. We're not there yet.

  980. Matthew Henry said, this is a logical

  981. statement. If those who have some good

  982. in them smart, and by smart he doesn't

  983. mean you're intelligent, it means you

  984. you're smarting cuz you're hurting,

  985. right?

  986. If those who have some good in them

  987. smart so severely for the evil that's

  988. found in them, can those expect to

  989. escape who have worse evils and no good

  990. found in them? If if uh

  991. Jerusalem be punished

  992. for learning idolatry from the nations,

  993. shall not the nations be punished of

  994. whom they've learned it?

  995. Yeah.

  996. So, it worked.

  997. My mom was being biblical.

  998. >> [laughter]

  999. >> And so, you know, whoever whoever does

1000. the problem, whether mine or somebody

1001. else's kids, my mom said, "I'd rather

1002. grow kids and grass." And she had the

1003. whole neighborhood in her front yard.

1004. But she she wouldn't take no sass.

1005. And she would deal with it. And I'm

1006. thankful. I needed it. I need more than

  1007. I got.

  1008. She's a loving mom.

1009. So, if God will chasten his children,

1010. he'll certainly judge the lost.

1011. And the next point is the chastening of

1012. God's people was after long neglect of

  1013. opportunity to repent.

1014. God was patient. God was patient.

  1015. Sent this prophet.

  1016. Another prophet.

  1017. Another sermon.

1018. Chance after chance after chance.

  1019. And

  1020. there was no repentance.

1021. You know anybody like that? Maybe you

  1022. were like that.

1023. And so, all of us are like that in

  1024. somewhat.

1025. Matthew Henry said, "God keeps an

  1026. account

  1027. whatever we do or

1028. how long we have enjoyed the means of

1029. grace. And the longer we've enjoyed

1030. them, the heavier will be our account if

1031. we've not been improved by them."

1032. That kind of shocks me, doesn't it?

  1033. I got saved when I was 13.

  1034. I didn't really live for the Lord. I

1035. didn't start living for the Lord till I

  1036. was 21.

1037. And I can never get those years back.

  1038. Can't get them back.

1039. And I try to go to class reunions back

1040. in Chillicothe, these get-togethers, and

1041. and I don't even recognize the people.

1042. all so old. It's like, "Who are you?"

1043. I had my opportunity to minister.

  1044. I had my opportunity and I

  1045. messed it up.

  1046. I can't take it back.

1047. And that's hard, isn't it? We only got

  1048. one life.

1049. It's one only one life and it'll soon be

1050. passed. Only what's done for Christ is

1051. last will last. And Israel wasn't doing

  1052. the right thing.

  1053. So, here's a

1054. the same divine principle Feinberg says

  1055. that

1056. that worked against Judah's sin will

1057. also be effective against Babylon's sin.

1058. Now, that brings us to this whole cup

  1059. thing.

1060. That brings us to the whole cup thing.

  1061. There's a cup of judgment that God's

1062. going to make people drink.

1063. Whether they want to or not.

1064. The nations are going to drink of it.

  1065. It's a cup of judgment.

  1066. And it's a serious business.

  1067. Uh

  1068. and

1069. God is going to see to it

  1070. that this happens.

1071. R. K. Harrison said, "The cup is given

1072. first to Jerusalem, then to the

  1073. uh

1074. the uh southern nations and then to

  1075. those in the north."

  1076. So, everybody drinks.

1077. This is a drink the unsaved cannot

  1078. escape.

1079. Where Warren Wiersbe quotes this person,

1080. Sydney Harris. I don't know who Sydney

1081. Harris is, but he said an idealist

1082. believes in the short run.

1083. Uh the idealist believes in the short

  1084. run.

1085. Uh a cynic believes in the long run.

1086. So the idealist believes the short run

1087. doesn't matter. The cynic believes the

1088. long run doesn't matter. The realist

  1089. believes that what is

  1090. close or left

1091. uh undone in the short run determines

  1092. the long run.

  1093. >> [laughter]

1094. >> So we got one life.

1095. One life. One short life will soon be

  1096. passed.

1097. Only what's done for Christ

  1098. will last.

1099. But what about the rest of it?

  1100. It won't last.

1101. So these are strong words.

  1102. I I

1103. Philip Ryken is one of my favorite

1104. writers on Jeremiah. He's got a book

1105. this thick of sermons. It's quite quite

  1106. good.

1107. And I'm going to close with some of his

1108. comments because they are that good

  1109. on Jeremiah 25.

1110. He said, "Sometimes the Bible compares

  1111. God to a shepherd,

  1112. a father,

  1113. or a judge,

  1114. or a king.

1115. But in this passage of scripture,

  1116. God compares himself

  1117. to a bartender."

1118. It's a [laughter] little off the wall,

  1119. you know.

1120. "You're going to drink this.

  1121. >> [laughter]

  1122. >> You're going to drink this."

1123. And God offers a cup to his enemies, a

1124. cup full of divine judgment. It's a

1125. bitter cup of God's wrath for the

  1126. nations. Jeremiah 25:15.

    Jeremiah 25:15

1127. The first to drink of the wine of God's

1128. wrath were the kings of Judah. It's

  1129. verse 17 and 18.

1130. It was if it was the Olympics of divine

1131. judgment and all the nations on the

  1132. earth are there.

1133. While God serves the drinks, no one's

1134. allowed to be a teetotaler.

  1135. Jeremiah's vision of judgement

1136. widens out from Jerusalem to the Middle

1137. East and from the Middle East to the

  1138. whole world.

1139. And he quotes Psalm 75:8. Would someone

    Psalms 75:8

1140. look that up? And he quotes Isaiah

    Isaiah 51:17

  1141. 51:17.

  1142. Somebody besides Linda.

1143. And he quotes Lamentations 4:21. Who

    Lamentations 4:21

  1144. wants Psalm 75:8?

    Psalms 75:8

1145. No. Who wants Isaiah 51:17? Anybody?

    Isaiah 51:17

  1146. Isaiah 51:17.

    Isaiah 51:17

1147. Uh Carol. And Lamentations 4:21. You

    Lamentations 4:21

1148. don't have to go far to that. It's right

1149. after the book of Jeremiah. Lamentations

  1150. Who will? Yeah. Yes.

1151. 4:21. Okay, 75:8. Who wants to read it?

  1152. Who's reading it? John.

1153. >> For in the hand of the Lord there is a

  1154. cup

1155. and the wine is red.

1156. It is full of mixture

1157. and he pours it out of the same.

  1158. But the dregs thereof

1159. all the wicked of the earth shall wring

  1160. them out

  1161. and drink them.

  1162. >> And why don't you read 22 while you're

  1163. there?

  1164. 50 51:22.

1165. >> You want the one at the beginning?

  1166. >> Isaiah 51:22.

    Isaiah 51:22

  1167. Okay.

  1168. >> I've got 51:17.

1169. >> Oh right. Well, let's forget that. Then

  1170. we'll just do 17. Now, I need

  1171. Lamentations. Sue. Lamentations 4: Who's

  1172. got Lamentations 4:21? Yeah.

    Lamentations 4:21

  1173. >> Me.

1174. Um rejoice and be glad, oh daughter of

1175. Edom, that dwelleth in the land of Uz.

1176. The cup also shall pass through to

1177. and you will become drunk and strip

  1178. yourself naked.

  1179. >> Now, here's a beautiful thing.

  1180. Jesus drank that cup.

1181. The cup that the Father has given me to

  1182. drink,

1183. shall I not drink it?

1184. You know, when we study

1185. the Gospels, whether it's Mark or Luke

  1186. or John,

1187. you see the same thing.

1188. The cup that my Father's given me to

  1189. drink,

1190. shall I not drink it?

  1191. Our Lord

  1192. drank the cup.

1193. He drank the cup of God's judgment for

  1194. us

1195. when he went to the cross.

1196. That was the surprise, the surprise, the

  1197. surprise when then

1198. that God put our sins

  1199. on our Lord

  1200. Jesus Christ.

1201. And it's the Gospel that the bitter cup

1202. of God's wrath ends up in the hand of

1203. Christ. I'm quoting Philip Ryken.

1204. And he said, "Jesus took the bitter cup

1205. of God's wrath into his hands, and he

1206. shrank from it. If you want the proof of

1207. the sinfulness of sin, here it is. If

1208. you want the proof of the reality of

1209. judgment, here it is. If the Son of God

1210. himself was hesitant to drink of such a

1211. cup, will you be so bold to drink of it

  1212. yourself?"

  1213. There's a hymn that was written

  1214. by Anne Cousin.

1215. Words were, and Ira Sankey wrote the

  1216. music.

  1217. O Christ, what burdens

  1218. bowed your head.

1219. I'd like to read some of the verses.

1220. O Christ, what burdens bowed your head,

1221. our load was laid on thee.

1222. Thou stoodest in the sinner's stead, did

1223. bear all ill for me. A victim led, thy

1224. blood was shed, now there's no load for

  1225. me.

1226. Death and the curse were in our cup. Oh

1227. Christ, twas full for thee.

1228. But thou has drained the last dark drop.

  1229. Tis empty now.

  1230. For me.

  1231. That bitter cup

  1232. loved

  1233. make it up.

  1234. Now blessings brought

  1235. for me.

1236. Father, as we come into your presence

  1237. today, we thank thee.

1238. We thank thee that the communion cup is

1239. called the cup of salvation.

1240. And we drink the cup of salvation

1241. because Jesus drank the cup of wrath.

  1242. And he hesitated.

1243. He knew what was coming.

1244. But he went to the cross

  1245. and he died

  1246. for us.

  1247. Died for our sins.

  1248. Paid for them completely

  1249. and totally.

1250. We thank you for that, Lord.

1251. We praise you for that.

1252. We ask heavenly Father that you would

1253. work in all our lives a great love for

  1254. our savior.

1255. Great love for cross of Calvary.

1256. In his name we pray.

  1257. Amen.

  1258. >> Amen.

  1259. >> Okay.

  1260. We'll be in 26 next week.

  1261. >> Lord,

1262. [singing] as we go from this place,

  1263. [music]

  1264. loving [singing] you more,

  1265. trusting [music] you more.

1266. May the power of your love

1267. [singing and music] and the light of

  1268. your word shine

  1269. through [music] a sin-darkened [singing]

  1270. world.
