  1. For those of you who don't know me, I haven't met yet. My name is Sean. I'm one of the pastors of

  2. Trinity Cambridge Church, and it is my joy and a great privilege to preach God's Word to you

  3. this morning. We are in a sermon series through the book of Revelation, and we are in chapter 3

  4. today, verses 7 to 13, which is the letter to the angel of the church in Philadelphia.

  5. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  6. Heavenly Father, we do desire to keep your Word and to keep the name of Jesus

  7. for our whole lives, but we cannot do that without your help, without your empowering Spirit,

  8. without your Word to guide us and to ground us, and so we gather ourselves here before your Word again,

  9. and we submit ourselves to your Word again. Won't you please speak to us?

  10. change us, and stir us up to love you with our whole heart,

  11. and to serve you with our whole lives.

  12. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  13. Please stand for the reading of God's Word from Revelation chapter 3.

    Revelation 3 chapter mention

  14. verses 7 to 13.

  15. And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write,

  16. the words of the Holy One, the True One, who has the key of David,

  17. who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.

  18. I know your works.

  19. I know your works.

  20. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut.

  21. I know that you have but little power,

  22. and yet you have kept my Word and have not denied my name.

  23. Behold, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan,

  24. who say that they are Jews and are not,

  25. but lie.

  26. Behold, I will make them come and bow down before your feet,

  27. and they will learn that I have loved you.

  28. Because you have kept my Word about patient endurance,

  29. I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world

  30. to try those who dwell on the earth.

  31. I am coming soon.

  32. Hold fast what you have,

  33. so that no one may seize your crown.

  34. The one who conquers,

  35. I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God.

  36. Never shall he go out of it,

  37. and I will write on him the name of my God,

  38. and the name of the city of my God,

  39. the new Jerusalem,

  40. which comes down from my God out of heaven,

  41. and my own new name.

  42. He who has an ear,

  43. let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

  44. This is God's holy and authoritative Word.

  45. You may be seated.

  46. Whether it's a film producer

  47. who takes advantage of job-insecure actresses,

  48. or a politician who goads interns into engaging in illegal activity,

  49. people in positions of power often get away with evil deeds,

  50. at least in this life,

  51. because they're able to pressure people into compliance or silence.

  52. And when we feel that we have but little power,

  53. and when we feel that someone else has power over us,

  54. and when we feel like that person has the key,

  55. holds the key to our future,

  56. the key to unlock career opportunities,

  57. or to open networks,

  58. or to open doors for the future,

  59. we too can be cowered into compliance and silence.

  60. This can happen to us in terms of our Christian witness as well.

  61. When we think that being a Bible-believing Christian

  62. can hurt our chances in making friends,

  63. or in being awarded a fellowship,

  64. or in getting a job,

  65. we can lie low and hide our faith,

  66. or even deny our allegiance to Jesus as Peter once did.

  67. After all, those guys have the power.

  68. They have the keys to open doors,

  69. and I don't want them to shut me out.

  70. As we have seen throughout Revelation 2 and 3,

  71. Christians in the first century faced persecution and pressure to conform,

  72. not only from the Romans,

  73. but also from the Jews.

  74. We can see this already in the Gospel of John.

  75. In John 9, 22,

  76. the parents of the man born blind that Jesus heals

  77. refuses to acknowledge that Jesus is the one who healed him,

  78. even though they know the truth,

  79. because they feared the Jews who had already decided and decreed

  80. that those who confessed Jesus to be the Messiah

  81. would be put out of the synagogue.

  82. Likewise, in John 12, 42,

  83. it says many of the authorities,

  84. even of the Jewish authorities,

  85. came to faith in Jesus.

  86. They believed in Jesus,

  87. but for the fear of the Pharisees,

  88. it says they did not confess the name of Jesus

  89. so that they would not be put out of the synagogue.

  90. This was not an uncommon struggle,

  91. and we see that both the church in Smyrna

  92. that we saw earlier in chapter 2, verse 9,

  93. and the church in Philadelphia here in chapter 3, verse 9,

  94. were being persecuted by what John calls,

  95. or Jesus calls, the synagogue of Satan,

  96. which is a reference to Jews

  97. who are doing the bidding of Satan

  98. by persecuting the people of God.

  99. Most of the early Christians were Jewish,

  100. and their allegiance to Jesus

  101. often put them in the crosshairs of the Jewish authorities,

  102. and this was a fearful thing

  103. because Jews, by virtue of their antiquity,

  104. and because they'd been around in the Roman Empire for a while,

  105. and because also they had rioted many times,

  106. and they had found ways

  107. to get some kind of acceptance in Roman society.

  108. They didn't have to worship the emperor

  109. as long as they honored the emperor,

  110. and so being a Jew was a benefit

  111. because then you can still survive in society and get by,

  112. but if the Jews also rejected you,

  113. then you'd have nowhere to go as a Christian

  114. to gain social acceptance.

  115. You would lose your family ties,

  116. your social respectability,

  117. your cultural acceptance,

  118. your career opportunities,

  119. and perhaps even your own life.

  120. These Jewish authorities and the Roman authorities

  121. were the cultural and social and vocational gatekeepers

  122. of their world,

  123. and they held the keys to their future,

  124. or so it seemed.

  125. But Jesus here reminds the church in Philadelphia

  126. of an even deeper truth

  127. and an even greater reality,

  128. that he is the one who has the key of David,

  129. who opens and no one will shut,

  130. and who shuts and no one will open.

  131. And that, therefore,

  132. they should hold fast to their profession of Christ's name,

  133. even through trials.

  134. That's the main point of this passage.

  135. We should hold fast to our profession of Jesus

  136. through trials,

  137. knowing that he has the key to the kingdom of God.

  138. We're gonna first talk about the one

  139. who has the key of David, it's Jesus,

  140. and then we're gonna talk about the church

  141. that keeps Christ's word,

  142. that's the church in Philadelphia.

  143. And third, we're gonna talk about the one

  144. who receives God's name,

  145. and that's all those who hold fast to Christ's name.

  146. Jesus introduces himself to the church

  147. in Philadelphia in verse seven,

  148. and I'm sure this is obvious to most people,

  149. but in case you're really unfamiliar with scripture,

  150. this is not talking about the city of Philadelphia

  151. in Pennsylvania.

  152. Revelation was written around 95 AD,

  153. Philadelphia is named after that city,

  154. but the ancient city of Philadelphia

  155. was in the region of Lydia in Asia Minor,

  156. in modern-day Turkey.

  157. And when the Ottomans conquered the city in 1392,

  158. they renamed it Allah-Shahir.

  159. So that's the modern name now,

  160. but that's what Philadelphia is back in the day.

  161. And Jesus says to this church in Philadelphia,

  162. the words of the Holy One, the true one,

  163. who has the key of David,

  164. who opens and no one will shut,

  165. who shuts and no one opens.

  166. Jesus is called the Holy One.

  167. He describes himself as the Holy One.

  168. In the Gospels, if you read through it,

  169. whenever the demons encounter Jesus,

  170. they stand in awe and exclaim,

  171. I know who you are, the Holy One of God.

  172. This is a divine title

  173. because often throughout Scripture over 30 times,

  174. God the Father, Yahweh,

  175. is called the Holy One of Israel.

  176. So the word holy in its basic meaning

  177. means consecrated or set apart for God

  178. for a special purpose.

  179. In Scripture, the opposite of what is holy

  180. is what is common.

  181. So holy could even be translated uncommon or special.

  182. So Jesus, like God the Father, is holy.

  183. He's not like us.

  184. We are sinful, but Jesus is righteous.

  185. We are finite, but Jesus is infinite and eternal.

  186. We are fickle, but Jesus is unchanging, constant.

  187. He is set apart from us and he is holy.

  188. And Jesus is also called the true one.

  189. As in the English, here in the Greek,

  190. which is the original language

  191. that the New Testament is written in,

  192. the word true has multiple nuances.

  193. It can mean that someone is truthful or trustworthy,

  194. or it can mean that someone is real or genuine,

  195. as opposed to fake or false.

  196. And I think all of those meanings are in view here.

  197. And that brings Jesus into an intentional contrast

  198. with the detractors of the church in Philadelphia

  199. described later in verse nine.

  200. The synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews

  201. and are not, but lie.

  202. Jesus, in contrast, is the true one.

  203. There were Jews who were denouncing these Christians

  204. in Philadelphia saying,

  205. you are not the people of God.

  206. We're the true people of God.

  207. We belong to God.

  208. You don't.

  209. You're fake.

  210. You're the heretics.

  211. We are the ones who will inherit the kingdom of God.

  212. But Jesus says,

  213. they are liars.

  214. I am the truthful one,

  215. the true one,

  216. the trustworthy one.

  217. So pay attention to what I'm about to say

  218. about who you are

  219. and what you are.

  220. Jesus is the dependable and reliable witness.

  221. He is the real deal.

  222. And so it doesn't matter what anyone says about us,

  223. what our persecutors say about us,

  224. what our flatterers say about us,

  225. what matters is what Jesus says about us.

  226. And Jesus is the holy one,

  227. the true one.

  228. And later on in Revelation 6,

  229. 10,

  230. God the Father is described as holy and true.

  231. So again,

  232. this is a divine title.

  233. It's another way to say

  234. what Revelation 3,

  235. 14 says about Jesus.

  236. He's the faithful and true witness.

  237. His testimony is utterly reliable.

  238. And this Jesus is the one,

  239. it says,

  240. who has the key of David,

  241. who opens and no one will shut,

  242. who shuts and no one opens,

  243. as it says in verse seven.

  244. This is a slight variation

  245. of what we saw in the glorious vision

  246. in chapter one,

  247. verse 18.

  248. That's where all these introductions

  249. to the letters and churches

  250. are taken from.

  251. And there in chapter one,

  252. verse 18,

  253. it said Jesus had the keys

  254. of death and Hades.

  255. There it was particularly emphasizing

  256. Jesus' power over death

  257. and over eternal life.

  258. He's the one who determines

  259. who gets to go into eternal life.

  260. He's the one who raises the dead.

  261. And so that power is in view here too.

  262. But this verse is going actually

  263. even further back

  264. beyond Revelation 118

  265. to Isaiah 22.

  266. In Isaiah 22,

  267. there is a steward

  268. named Shebna

  269. and he is a steward

  270. over the royal household

  271. of the household of David

  272. at the time.

  273. It was King Hezekiah.

  274. And he is the one

  275. that's in charge

  276. of basically discharging

  277. the duties of the king

  278. on his behalf.

  279. He's the steward.

  280. But Shebna was unfaithful.

  281. He held the key to the palace.

  282. He determines

  283. who gets to come in

  284. and who gets to go out.

  285. But he was an unfaithful steward.

  286. And so God prophesies,

  287. God says,

  288. and declares in Isaiah 22, 19,

  289. I will thrust you

  290. from your office

  291. and you will be pulled down

  292. from your station.

  293. And instead,

  294. God says,

  295. I will call my servant,

  296. Eliakim,

  297. to be steward

  298. over the house of David.

  299. And this is what he says

  300. to Eliakim

  301. in Isaiah 22, 22.

  302. I will place on his shoulder

  303. the key of the house of David.

  304. He shall open

  305. and none shall shut

  306. and he shall shut

  307. and none shall open.

  308. The exact phrasing

  309. of this verse

  310. in Revelation 3.

  311. In this sense,

  312. Eliakim,

  313. whose name means

  314. the one whom God

  315. will raise up,

  316. is a type

  317. of Jesus Christ.

  318. He's a figure

  319. of Jesus Christ

  320. who prefigures

  321. that the Messiah,

  322. Jesus,

  323. will come

  324. as the one

  325. whom God raises up

  326. to be over all

  327. of the household of David

  328. and to reign in his throne.

  329. So this Eliakim

  330. is foreshadowing that.

  331. And the fact

  332. that Eliakim here

  333. is a type of the Messiah

  334. is confirmed

  335. by the fact

  336. that he's called

  337. by God my servant.

  338. And in Isaiah,

  339. that's a key expression

  340. because the Messiah

  341. is described

  342. over and over again

  343. by God in Isaiah

  344. as my servant.

  345. So then Jesus

  346. is saying here

  347. in Revelation

  348. that he is

  349. the ultimate fulfillment

  350. of what Eliakim was.

  351. At the end of Isaiah 22,

  352. we're told

  353. that even Eliakim

  354. would fail.

  355. He'd had the throne

  356. of honor

  357. to his father's house,

  358. but he would also

  359. be cut down.

  360. And he would be cut down

  361. and he would fall.

  362. That was predicted

  363. in Isaiah 22 also.

  364. But Jesus,

  365. in contrast,

  366. sits on the throne

  367. of David forever.

  368. And he will never

  369. be cut down.

  370. And Jesus is saying

  371. that I am he

  372. who holds the key

  373. of David.

  374. And that means

  375. Jesus has the key

  376. to the kingdom of God.

  377. No one can enter

  378. the kingdom of God

  379. except through him.

  380. And this is why

  381. the church in Philadelphia

  382. can be assured

  383. of Jesus' promise

  384. in verse 8.

  385. Behold,

  386. I've set before you

  387. an open door

  388. which no one

  389. is able

  390. to shut.

  391. this is an amazing

  392. comfort

  393. to the church

  394. in Philadelphia.

  395. The expression

  396. open door

  397. does sometimes

  398. refer

  399. to opportunities

  400. for ministry

  401. throughout the New Testament.

  402. So Paul writes

  403. that a wide

  404. open door

  405. of ministry

  406. has been opened

  407. a wide door

  408. for ministry

  409. has been opened

  410. for me

  411. in 1 Corinthians 16

  412. and other places.

  413. And it's possible

  414. that Jesus

  415. is kind of getting

  416. at the same idea

  417. here,

  418. that he's opening up

  419. their door

  420. for ministry.

  421. However,

  422. I think the immediate

  423. context of this passage

  424. kind of points us

  425. in a different direction.

  426. I think the open door

  427. is a reference

  428. to the door

  429. to the kingdom of God

  430. because Jesus himself

  431. just said

  432. that he has the key

  433. of David

  434. and he opens

  435. and no one shuts

  436. and he shuts

  437. and no one opens.

  438. Revelation 4.1

  439. confirms this.

  440. It says,

  441. Behold,

  442. a door standing open

  443. where?

  444. In heaven.

  445. So remember

  446. that the church

  447. in Philadelphia

  448. is facing opposition

  449. and persecution

  450. from hostile,

  451. unbelieving Jews.

  452. As we see

  453. in the Gospels

  454. and throughout

  455. the book of Acts,

  456. some of the Jews

  457. were putting Christians

  458. out of their synagogues

  459. and refusing

  460. to give them

  461. a platform

  462. to proclaim

  463. the gospel.

  464. They contradicted,

  465. reviled,

  466. and stirred up

  467. persecution

  468. against Christians.

  469. So imagine

  470. how discouraging

  471. it would have been

  472. to face

  473. such forceful opposition,

  474. especially from

  475. their Jewish brethren

  476. whom they had expected

  477. to embrace the Messiah,

  478. their long-awaited Messiah,

  479. but instead,

  480. all we have

  481. are closed doors

  482. everywhere.

  483. We're now shut out

  484. of the synagogue.

  485. We're shut out

  486. from society

  487. because of our allegiance

  488. to Jesus.

  489. And then,

  490. in that situation,

  491. to hear this assurance,

  492. I have set before you

  493. an open door.

  494. which no one

  495. is able to shut.

  496. Yes,

  497. they might shut you

  498. out of the synagogue,

  499. but they can never

  500. shut you out

  501. of the kingdom of God

  502. because I have

  503. the key of David

  504. and no one can shut

  505. what I open.

  506. Let this be a comfort

  507. to you

  508. when you're ridiculed

  509. by your friends

  510. for being a Christian,

  511. when you lose

  512. the respect

  513. of your coworkers

  514. or your professors

  515. for voicing

  516. your Christian beliefs,

  517. or when you feel

  518. like you've lost

  519. academic or career

  520. opportunities

  521. because of your

  522. allegiance to Jesus,

  523. remember that there

  524. is something

  525. that no one

  526. can ever

  527. take away from you

  528. because you have

  529. an inheritance

  530. that is imperishable

  531. and undefiled

  532. and unfading

  533. kept in heaven

  534. for you

  535. by Jesus.

  536. Remember that

  537. that door to heaven

  538. and the kingdom

  539. of God

  540. has been opened

  541. by Jesus

  542. who alone

  543. has the key.

  544. So Jesus,

  545. the one who has

  546. the key of David,

  547. is the sender

  548. of this letter.

  549. Now let's look

  550. at the recipient

  551. of Jesus' letter

  552. and what Jesus

  553. says about them

  554. in verses 8-10.

  555. The phrase

  556. I know

  557. precedes statements

  558. about the church

  559. in Philadelphia

  560. and then the word

  561. behold precedes

  562. statements about

  563. what Jesus says,

  564. has done,

  565. and will do

  566. for the church

  567. in Philadelphia.

  568. And usually

  569. if you look

  570. at the pattern

  571. of the seven letters

  572. in Revelation 2 and 3,

  573. the statement

  574. I know your works

  575. is usually followed

  576. immediately by

  577. the recounting

  578. of those works,

  579. a list of those works,

  580. whether that's good

  581. or bad.

  582. But here,

  583. the usual sequence

  584. is interrupted

  585. by a parenthetical

  586. remark in which

  587. Jesus says,

  588. I know your works.

  589. Behold,

  590. I have set before you

  591. an open door

  592. which no one

  593. is able to shut.

  594. It's kind of a,

  595. kind of an odd

  596. and then he resumes

  597. the thought again,

  598. I know.

  599. So it's as if

  600. Jesus is so eager

  601. to command

  602. and comfort

  603. this little church

  604. in Philadelphia

  605. that he interrupts

  606. his own flow

  607. of thought

  608. to embrace

  609. and uphold them

  610. and says,

  611. I know,

  612. I know

  613. your works.

  614. I see everything.

  615. Don't worry.

  616. I have opened

  617. a door for you

  618. that no one can shut.

  619. And then Jesus

  620. resumes his recounting

  621. of the works

  622. of the Philadelphian church.

  623. What works

  624. do they have?

  625. It says in verse 8,

  626. I know that you

  627. have but little power

  628. and yet you have

  629. kept my word

  630. and have not denied

  631. my name.

  632. This idea of keeping

  633. the word of Christ

  634. is repeated in verse 10

  635. because you have kept

  636. my word about

  637. patient endurance.

  638. The church in Philadelphia

  639. is a church

  640. that has kept

  641. the word of Christ,

  642. the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  643. Despite persecution,

  644. they have not denied

  645. Jesus' name.

  646. despite opposition,

  647. they have continued

  648. to hold fast to

  649. and proclaim

  650. the name of Jesus.

  651. And they have done this

  652. despite the fact

  653. that they have

  654. but little power.

  655. It's ironic

  656. that the church

  657. in Sardis,

  658. which had the reputation

  659. of being alive,

  660. and the church

  661. in Laodicea,

  662. that's next church,

  663. which boasted,

  664. I am rich,

  665. I have prospered,

  666. and I need nothing.

  667. that these two churches

  668. are precisely

  669. the churches

  670. that receive

  671. the most severe rebuke

  672. from the Lord Jesus.

  673. But this little-known church

  674. in Philadelphia

  675. that had but little power

  676. receives Jesus'

  677. highest commendation.

  678. In fact,

  679. Jesus only has good things

  680. to say about this church.

  681. Outwardly,

  682. the church in Philadelphia

  683. was unimpressive.

  684. They had but little power.

  685. Later in Revelation 13.2

  686. and 17.13,

  687. it connects the word power

  688. with political power.

  689. This church lacks

  690. political power.

  691. They don't have much influence

  692. in society.

  693. They're not the church

  694. that attracts media attention

  695. or gets visits

  696. from presidential hopefuls.

  697. They don't have hundreds

  698. of thousands of followers

  699. on their social media accounts.

  700. They're a bunch of nobodies.

  701. They're also likely poor.

  702. Revelation 18.3 speaks

  703. of the merchants

  704. of the immoral nations of earth

  705. who have grown rich

  706. from the power,

  707. the same word,

  708. of Babylon's luxurious living.

  709. The church in Philadelphia

  710. had no such economic power

  711. because they keep the name of Jesus

  712. and refuse to deny him

  713. and because they refuse

  714. to compromise their faith

  715. and their ethics

  716. and because they refuse

  717. to confess the name of Caesar,

  718. they are likely cut off

  719. from the corridors

  720. of economic power.

  721. They don't have a seat

  722. at the table of power.

  723. This is not a church

  724. that can host large conferences

  725. and symposia

  726. or make sizable,

  727. impactful donations

  728. to causes.

  729. They have but little power

  730. and yet

  731. they have kept

  732. Jesus' word

  733. and have not denied his name.

  734. That's so encouraging

  735. because that means

  736. this kind of faithfulness

  737. that the church in Philadelphia

  738. gets commended for

  739. is accessible

  740. to every single church.

  741. Whether that church

  742. is in the city,

  743. a major global hub

  744. or in the countryside

  745. by the farms,

  746. whether this church

  747. is in a place

  748. where there's religious freedom

  749. or in a place

  750. where there's great

  751. religious persecution,

  752. whether this church

  753. is in a first world country

  754. or in a third world country,

  755. in every place,

  756. any church

  757. can do what this church

  758. in Philadelphia is doing

  759. because they had no power.

  760. Yet they kept

  761. his word.

  762. Brothers and sisters,

  763. that means we also

  764. can hear this commendation

  765. from Jesus

  766. if you are faithful.

  767. Is that what you desire

  768. above all else?

  769. Church in Cambridge?

  770. Church in Cambridge?

  771. Church in Cambridge?

  772. To hear the commendation

  773. of our Lord Jesus?

  774. Is that not what you want

  775. above all else?

  776. So let's hold fast

  777. to the gospel,

  778. to the word of Jesus.

  779. Hold fast

  780. to the precious name

  781. of our Savior,

  782. Jesus Christ.

  783. Let's be people

  784. who say,

  785. even if I have to let go

  786. of everything else,

  787. to hold on

  788. to the name of Jesus.

  789. Even if I have to

  790. let go of power.

  791. Even if I have to

  792. let go of prestige.

  793. Even if I have to

  794. let go of prosperity.

  795. I am not letting go

  796. of the name of Jesus.

  797. Even if I am shut out

  798. of every place.

  799. Shut down

  800. by everyone.

  801. Even if I'm shut out

  802. of the ivory tower

  803. and shut out

  804. of the public square

  805. and shut out

  806. of the marketplace

  807. and shut out

  808. of Washington DC.

  809. Even if I am canceled.

  810. I will never deny

  811. the one who has

  812. the key of David.

  813. because he's the one

  814. who gives us access

  815. to the one place

  816. that we cannot do

  817. without.

  818. The kingdom of God.

  819. Because that's the one place

  820. where we can dwell

  821. forever

  822. with God

  823. in love

  824. and fellowship.

  825. Let goods

  826. and kindred go.

  827. This mortal life

  828. also.

  829. The body

  830. they may kill.

  831. God's truth

  832. abides still.

  833. His kingdom

  834. is forever.

  835. And look at

  836. what kind of vindication

  837. awaits those who are

  838. faithful to Christ

  839. in verse 9.

  840. Behold,

  841. I will make those

  842. of the synagogue

  843. of Satan

  844. who say that they are

  845. Jews and are not

  846. but lie.

  847. Behold,

  848. I will make them

  849. come

  850. and bow down

  851. before your feet

  852. and they will learn

  853. that I have loved you.

  854. All those naysayers

  855. who said that you

  856. don't belong to God.

  857. You don't know

  858. the true God.

  859. We're the people

  860. of God.

  861. You're just schismatics.

  862. You're a counterfeit.

  863. Jesus says,

  864. I will make them

  865. come down

  866. and bow down

  867. before your feet

  868. and they will learn

  869. that I have loved you.

  870. I will vindicate you.

  871. I will show them

  872. that you are

  873. my people

  874. that I have chosen you.

  875. that I love you.

  876. They will see that

  877. and they will say,

  878. I see now

  879. that you are God's people.

  880. In several places

  881. throughout Isaiah,

  882. the Lord declares

  883. that a day is coming

  884. when he will make

  885. the Gentile nations

  886. come to Israel

  887. and bow down to them

  888. and acknowledge

  889. that they are

  890. favored of the Lord.

  891. These nations

  892. that once conquered

  893. and despised

  894. Israel will bow down

  895. in submission

  896. before them

  897. and they will say,

  898. surely God is in you.

  899. There is no other,

  900. no God besides him.

  901. They shall call you

  902. the city of the Lord,

  903. the Zion of the Holy One

  904. of Israel.

  905. In this way,

  906. those who wait

  907. for the Lord

  908. shall not be put

  909. to shame.

  910. They were proven right.

  911. They will be vindicated.

  912. Jesus will bring about

  913. the fulfillment

  914. of all of Isaiah's prophecies

  915. and what comfort is this

  916. for Christians

  917. who are persecuted

  918. for their faith?

  919. There's more overt persecution

  920. in Buddhist, Hindu,

  921. and Muslim cultures.

  922. In those places,

  923. Christians are often disowned

  924. by their own family members

  925. and lose their jobs

  926. and are cut off

  927. from society

  928. as apostates

  929. and infidels

  930. and in many cases,

  931. killed.

  932. But still,

  933. in less intense ways,

  934. this can happen to us

  935. even here.

  936. We have church members

  937. here

  938. who have been treated

  939. as pariahs

  940. by their own family members

  941. because of their faith

  942. in Jesus.

  943. But don't be disheartened

  944. because the day

  945. is coming.

  946. It's surely coming

  947. when Jesus will

  948. make all those people

  949. come and bow down

  950. before you

  951. and acknowledge

  952. you were right.

  953. Jesus really did love you.

  954. This is a great reversal

  955. in more ways than one.

  956. In Isaiah,

  957. God said that

  958. the Gentiles

  959. will come to Israel,

  960. the Jews,

  961. and acknowledge

  962. that they are

  963. the chosen people of God.

  964. But here in Revelation,

  965. it's the Jews

  966. who will come

  967. to Christians

  968. and acknowledge

  969. that God has loved them.

  970. Jesus is once again

  971. making a theological point

  972. that he made earlier

  973. in chapter 2, verse 9,

  974. that there are ethnic Jews

  975. who say that they are Jews

  976. but are not

  977. because they have rejected

  978. their Jewish Messiah.

  979. Jesus the Christ.

  980. For it says

  981. in Romans 2,

  982. 27 to 28,

  983. no one is Jew

  984. who is merely one outwardly,

  985. nor is circumcision

  986. outward and physical,

  987. but a Jew

  988. is one inwardly,

  989. and circumcision

  990. is a matter of the heart

  991. by the spirit,

  992. not by the letter.

  993. It's those who are united

  994. by faith to Jesus

  995. and whose hearts,

  996. therefore,

  997. have been circumcised,

  998. made new

  999. by the spirit of God.

1000. They are the true Jews

1001. and they are true Israel

  1002. regardless of whether

1003. they are Jew or Greek,

  1004. slave or free,

  1005. male or female.

  1006. That's the glorious reality

1007. of what Christ has accomplished

1008. in his death and resurrection.

  1009. So Jesus continues

  1010. to assure the church

  1011. in Philadelphia

  1012. in verse 10,

  1013. because you have kept

1014. my word about patient endurance,

  1015. I will keep you

1016. from the hour of trial

  1017. that is coming

  1018. on the whole world

1019. to try those who dwell

  1020. on the earth.

  1021. The repetition

  1022. of the word keep

  1023. here emphasizes

  1024. the logical connection

  1025. between those two things.

  1026. It's because

  1027. they have kept

  1028. Christ's word,

1029. that Christ is keeping them

1030. from the hour of trial.

  1031. Keeping the word

  1032. of Jesus Christ

  1033. requires patient endurance.

  1034. It's hard to say

  1035. definitively

1036. what this hour of trial

  1037. is referring to

  1038. specifically.

  1039. I think it refers

  1040. to some kind

  1041. of universal judgment

  1042. and trial

  1043. because it says

1044. that the hour of trial

  1045. is coming on

  1046. the whole world

  1047. to try those

1048. who dwell on the earth

  1049. and that phrase,

  1050. those who dwell

  1051. on the earth,

  1052. is one that's used

  1053. repeatedly throughout

  1054. the book of Revelation

1055. to refer to all those

  1056. who are idolatrous

  1057. on earth.

  1058. So I don't think

1059. this is a local trial

  1060. that's coming upon

  1061. the church in Philadelphia.

  1062. I think this is

  1063. a universal trial

  1064. of some kind.

  1065. I also don't think

  1066. Jesus is talking here

  1067. about a physical rapture

  1068. of Christians on earth

1069. so that they are spared.

1070. God takes the Christians away

1071. so that they are spared

  1072. this coming judgment

  1073. of God

  1074. because throughout Revelation,

  1075. we see the expectation

  1076. that Christians will suffer

  1077. and experience tribulation.

  1078. It says in Revelation 7, 14

  1079. that Christians are not

1080. those who are taken away

  1081. from tribulation.

  1082. Rather, it says

1083. they are those who come

1084. out of the great tribulation.

1085. they make it out of the great tribulation

  1086. in victory

  1087. precisely because

1088. they have washed their robes

  1089. and made them white

1090. in the blood of the Lamb

  1091. because they were faithful

  1092. unto death.

  1093. So if anything,

  1094. I think it's more likely

1095. to refer to spiritual protection

  1096. and there are several

  1097. biblical parallels

  1098. and especially

  1099. the high priestly prayer

1100. of Jesus in John 17.

  1101. And there,

1102. Jesus prays for his people,

  1103. his future followers,

1104. for those who have kept

  1105. your word.

  1106. Jesus prays for them.

1107. And he asks God the Father

1108. to keep them in your name.

  1109. And then later,

  1110. Jesus says,

  1111. I do not ask

  1112. that you take them

  1113. out of the world,

1114. but that you keep them

  1115. from the evil one.

  1116. So I think that's the idea

1117. that Jesus has in mind

  1118. here in Revelation 3, 10.

1119. Jesus will not take his people

  1120. out of the world,

  1121. but he will nevertheless

1122. keep them from the evil one,

1123. keep them from that hour of trial

1124. so that they can endure

  1125. without failing.

1126. So that they can keep

1127. professing the name of Jesus

1128. through that hour of trial.

  1129. Another possibility

1130. is that the hour of trial

  1131. is referring to God's

  1132. ultimate final judgment

  1133. since the word hour

1134. is often used in Revelation

  1135. to refer to that

  1136. final hour of judgment.

1137. And if that's what's in view here,

1138. then the church in Philadelphia

  1139. is spared that judgment

  1140. and punishment

  1141. that comes upon

  1142. unbelieving,

  1143. on the unbelieving world.

  1144. Jesus exhorts them

  1145. in verse 11,

  1146. I'm coming soon.

1147. Hold fast what you have

1148. so that no one may seize

  1149. your crown.

  1150. Whether we are truly

1151. among God's elect or not,

1152. God's chosen people or not,

  1153. whether we truly belong

  1154. to him or not

  1155. is borne out by

  1156. our perseverance

  1157. till the end.

  1158. That's why,

  1159. even as it is

  1160. Jesus himself

  1161. who keeps us

  1162. from the evil one

  1163. and keeps us

  1164. in God's name,

1165. we also have the responsibility

  1166. to hold fast

1167. and keep the word of Christ.

  1168. This is not saying

  1169. that we are saved

  1170. by our good works,

1171. but rather that we are saved

  1172. by grace through faith,

  1173. but

  1174. it's our perseverance

  1175. till the end

  1176. in faith

  1177. that gives evidence

  1178. of our true salvation.

  1179. an Olympic athlete

  1180. endures grueling workouts

  1181. and Spartan diets

  1182. so that one day

1183. he or she may be crowned

  1184. with that Olympic wreath

1185. and receive that gold medal.

  1186. And likewise,

  1187. we as Christians

  1188. have a prize

  1189. that awaits us

1190. as we run this race,

  1191. spiritual race.

1192. There is laid up for us

  1193. a crown of righteousness,

1194. the crown of eternal life,

1195. the unfading crown of glory,

  1196. as it says

  1197. in 1 Peter 5, 4.

  1198. And we don't need

1199. to be strong and gifted

  1200. in order to get

  1201. to that finish line.

  1202. We just have to,

  1203. even when we have

  1204. little power,

  1205. we can make it

1206. because the Lord Jesus himself

  1207. keeps us.

1208. All we need to do

  1209. humbly

1210. keep the word of Christ,

  1211. keep believing

1212. in the name of Jesus

  1213. which alone can save.

  1214. Jesus adds even more

  1215. motivation for us

  1216. in verse 12

  1217. by promising us

1218. that the one who conquers

  1219. will receive God's name.

  1220. It says,

  1221. the one who conquers

  1222. I will make him a pillar

1223. in the temple of my God.

1224. Never shall he go out of it

1225. and I will write on him

1226. the name of my God

1227. and the name of the city

  1228. of my God,

  1229. the new Jerusalem

  1230. which comes down

  1231. from my God

  1232. out of heaven

1233. and my own new name.

  1234. We confess the name

  1235. of Jesus Christ

  1236. till the end,

1237. then God will make us

1238. a pillar in the temple of God.

1239. What does that mean exactly?

1240. A pillar in the temple of God.

1241. I think the next sentence

  1242. tells us exactly

  1243. what that's pointing to.

1244. Never shall he go out of it.

  1245. That's what being a pillar means.

  1246. Pillars are immovable

  1247. and for that reason

  1248. they are symbols

  1249. of permanence.

  1250. This kind of promise

  1251. of permanent dwelling

  1252. would have been

  1253. very evocative

  1254. for the church

  1255. in Philadelphia

  1256. because historians

  1257. observe that the church

  1258. or the city

  1259. of Philadelphia

  1260. experienced

  1261. and suffered

  1262. more earthquakes

  1263. than any other cities

  1264. named here

  1265. in Revelation chapters 2

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  1266. and 3.

  1267. When you look at

  1268. the ancient Greek temples

  1269. when the ruins

1270. of the ancient Greek temples

1271. I know Bailey was there

  1272. not that long ago

1273. if you look at pictures

  1274. of those

  1275. what do you see?

1276. There are no walls left

  1277. there's no roof left

  1278. you see pillars

  1279. because pillars

  1280. are built

  1281. to last

  1282. because they hold up

  1283. so much weight

  1284. they're durable

  1285. they're symbols

  1286. of permanence

  1287. and so

  1288. like that

1289. we will get to remain

  1290. forever

1291. in the temple of God

  1292. we will be immovable

  1293. fixtures

1294. in the temple of God

  1295. this is another way

  1296. of saying

  1297. what Jesus said

  1298. earlier in verse 8

  1299. behold I set you

  1300. before you

  1301. an open door

  1302. which no one

  1303. is able to shut

  1304. no one is able

  1305. to remove us from

  1306. or shut us out

  1307. from God's heavenly kingdom

1308. where God's going to dwell

  1309. in our midst forever

  1310. and we'll be like

  1311. the pillar

1312. in the temple of God

  1313. moreover Jesus promises

1314. I will write on him

1315. the name of my God

  1316. and the name

  1317. of the city

  1318. of my God

  1319. the new Jerusalem

  1320. which comes down

  1321. from my God

  1322. out of heaven

  1323. and my own

  1324. new name

  1325. as we see

  1326. in Revelation 21

  1327. 2

  1328. the holy city

  1329. the new Jerusalem

  1330. that comes down

  1331. from God

  1332. out of heaven

  1333. is the bride

  1334. of Christ

  1335. which is a reference

  1336. to the church

  1337. of Christ

  1338. that God

  1339. has redeemed

  1340. and sanctified

  1341. for himself

  1342. and adorned

  1343. as a bride

  1344. Jesus is our bridegroom

  1345. the church

  1346. is the bride

  1347. as Ephesians 5

  1348. talks about

  1349. and we will receive

  1350. the name

  1351. of the new Jerusalem

  1352. that city

  1353. as the bride

  1354. of Christ

  1355. but we will also

  1356. receive

  1357. the name of God

  1358. name of God

  1359. will be written

  1360. on us

  1361. name of Christ

  1362. his own new name

  1363. will be written

  1364. on us

  1365. I don't know

  1366. if people

  1367. I think people

  1368. still do this

  1369. when you

  1370. put your name

  1371. on something

  1372. you own it

  1373. it's your way

  1374. of marking

  1375. that it belongs

  1376. to you

  1377. it's your way

  1378. of identifying

  1379. with it

  1380. saying it belongs

  1381. to me

  1382. it takes a lot

  1383. of money

  1384. nowadays

  1385. to get buildings

  1386. named after you

  1387. it probably always

1388. cost a lot of money

  1389. one of the most

  1390. prominent buildings

  1391. in Harvard Square

  1392. is Harvard's

  1393. Smith Campus Center

  1394. named after

  1395. Richard A.

  1396. and Susan F.

  1397. Smith

  1398. the couple

  1399. donated

  1400. tens of

  1401. millions of

  1402. dollars

  1403. to get that

  1404. building

  1405. named after them

  1406. you can't get

  1407. it named after

  1408. you otherwise

  1409. but God

  1410. paid

  1411. a much

  1412. much

  1413. higher

  1414. price

  1415. to redeem

  1416. us

  1417. as his

  1418. people

  1419. 1 Peter 1

  1420. 18-19

  1421. tells us

  1422. that we

  1423. were ransomed

  1424. from the

  1425. futile ways

  1426. inherited from

  1427. your forefathers

  1428. not with

  1429. perishable

  1430. things

  1431. such as

  1432. silver or

  1433. gold

  1434. but with

  1435. the precious

  1436. blood of

  1437. Christ

  1438. like that

  1439. of a

  1440. lamb

  1441. without

  1442. blemish

  1443. or spot

  1444. as Hosea

  1445. 1 tells us

  1446. our names

  1447. used to be

  1448. lo-ami

  1449. not my

  1450. people

  1451. our names

  1452. used to be

  1453. lo-ru-hamah

  1454. not

  1455. no mercy

  1456. because God

  1457. hadn't shown us

  1458. mercy

  1459. we were people

  1460. who had rebelled

  1461. against God

  1462. we were

  1463. treasoners

  1464. we tried to

  1465. usurp

  1466. God's throne

  1467. by setting

  1468. up idols

  1469. and gods

  1470. for ourselves

  1471. or seeking

  1472. to be

  1473. God

  1474. ourselves

  1475. masters

  1476. of our

  1477. own fate

  1478. instead of

  1479. submitting to

  1480. God

  1481. who are

  1482. creator

  1483. and Lord

  1484. that's what

  1485. we have

  1486. done

  1487. and so

  1488. we were

  1489. castaways

  1490. we're like

  1491. orphans

  1492. ones without

  1493. a name

  1494. without an

  1495. inheritance

  1496. and yet

  1497. God

  1498. because he's

  1499. rich in

  1500. mercy

  1501. because he

  1502. loved us

  1503. with a

  1504. great love

  1505. he sent

  1506. Jesus Christ

  1507. to die

  1508. for our

  1509. sins

  1510. on the

  1511. cross

  1512. so that he

  1513. could put

  1514. his name

  1515. on us

  1516. again

  1517. say

  1518. my people

  1519. to whom

  1520. I have

  1521. shown

  1522. mercy

  1523. that's

  1524. what's

  1525. in view

  1526. here

  1527. we've been

  1528. purchased

  1529. by the

  1530. blood

  1531. of Jesus

  1532. so Jesus

  1533. says

  1534. I will

  1535. write on

  1536. him

  1537. the name

  1538. of my

  1539. God

  1540. and the

  1541. name

  1542. of the

  1543. city

  1544. of my

  1545. God

  1546. the

  1547. new

  1548. Jerusalem

  1549. which

  1550. comes

  1551. down

  1552. from my

  1553. God

  1554. out of

  1555. heaven

  1556. and my

  1557. own

  1558. new

  1559. name

  1560. why does

  1561. it say

  1562. it's going

  1563. to be a

  1564. new name

  1565. of Jesus

  1566. I think

  1567. it's telling

  1568. us that

  1569. we'll get

  1570. to know

  1571. Jesus

  1572. personally

  1573. and intimately

  1574. like we've

  1575. never known

  1576. him before

  1577. once you

  1578. get married

  1579. the couple

  1580. starts to

  1581. develop like

  1582. pet names

  1583. for each

  1584. other

  1585. and

  1586. there are

  1587. things that

  1588. Hannah

  1589. calls me

  1590. there are

  1591. names that

  1592. Hannah

  1593. calls me

  1594. that

  1595. I will

  1596. never

  1597. utter

  1598. here

  1599. it's

  1600. too

  1601. embarrassing

  1602. it's kind

  1603. of like

  1604. that

  1605. we'll

  1606. know

  1607. Jesus

  1608. new

  1609. name

  1610. like we

  1611. have

  1612. never

  1613. known

  1614. him

  1615. before

  1616. that

  1617. new

  1618. name

  1619. will

  1620. be

  1621. written

  1622. on

  1623. us

  1624. and

  1625. we'll

  1626. get

  1627. to

  1628. enjoy

  1629. him

  1630. and

  1631. love

  1632. him

  1633. forever

  1634. it's

  1635. the

  1636. fulfillment

  1637. of the

  1638. prophecy

  1639. in

  1640. Isaiah

  1641. 56

  1642. 5

  1643. that

  1644. we

  1645. read

  1646. in

  1647. our

  1648. call

  1649. to

  1650. worship

  1651. that

  1652. he'll

  1653. take

  1654. these

  1655. foreigners

  1656. and

  1657. eunuchs

  1658. who say

  1659. I don't

  1660. have a

  1661. place

  1662. among

  1663. God's

  1664. people

  1665. and

  1666. he

  1667. will

  1668. take

  1669. them

  1670. and

  1671. give

  1672. them

  1673. a

  1674. monument

  1675. within

  1676. his

  1677. walls

  1678. walls

  1679. of

  1680. his

  1681. house

  1682. a

  1683. name

  1684. that

  1685. is

  1686. better

  1687. than

  1688. the

  1689. name

  1690. of

  1691. sons

  1692. and

  1693. daughters

  1694. and

  1695. then

  1696. verse

  1697. 13

  1698. Jesus

  1699. closes

  1700. his

  1701. letter

  1702. with

  1703. the

  1704. same

  1705. invitation

  1706. that

  1707. is

  1708. appended

  1709. to

  1710. every

  1711. single

  1712. one

  1713. of

  1714. the

  1715. seven

  1716. letters

  1717. he

  1718. who

  1719. has

  1720. an

  1721. ear

  1722. let

  1723. him

  1724. hear

  1725. what

  1726. the

  1727. spirit

  1728. says

  1729. to

  1730. the

  1731. churches

  1732. that

  1733. clause

  1734. he

  1735. who

  1736. has

  1737. an

  1738. ear

  1739. let

  1740. him

  1741. hear

  1742. is

  1743. taken

  1744. from

  1745. Isaiah

  1746. 6

  1747. 9

  1748. to

  1749. 10

  1750. and

  1751. it's

  1752. an

  1753. utterance

  1754. of

  1755. God's

  1756. prophetic

  1757. judgment

  1758. while

  1759. this

  1760. letter

  1761. is

  1762. proclaimed

  1763. to

  1764. all

  1765. only

  1766. those

  1767. who

  1768. have

  1769. ears

  1770. to

  1771. hear

  1772. given

  1773. by

  1774. the

  1775. spirit

  1776. of

  1777. God

  1778. will

  1779. be

  1780. able

  1781. to

  1782. hear

  1783. and

  1784. believe

  1785. and

  1786. obey

  1787. divine

  1788. revelation

  1789. always

  1790. opens

  1791. the

  1792. eyes

  1793. of

  1794. the

  1795. blind

  1796. those

  1797. who

  1798. seek

  1799. him

  1800. and

  1801. humble

  1802. themselves

  1803. before

  1804. him

  1805. and

  1806. yet

  1807. it

  1808. blinds

  1809. those

  1810. who

  1811. believe

  1812. they

  1813. already

  1814. see

  1815. and

  1816. how

  1817. do

  1818. we

  1819. know

  1820. whether

  1821. we

  1822. belong

  1823. to

  1824. the

  1825. first

  1826. category

  1827. or

  1828. the

  1829. second

  1830. category

  1831. do

  1832. you

  1833. believe

  1834. in

  1835. the

  1836. word

  1837. of

  1838. Jesus

  1839. do

  1840. you

  1841. hold

  1842. fast

  1843. to

  1844. the

  1845. name

  1846. of

  1847. Jesus

  1848. that's

  1849. how

  1850. you

  1851. know

  1852. that means

  1853. you

  1854. have

  1855. ears

  1856. to

  1857. hear

  1858. so

  1859. heed

  1860. the

  1861. gospel

  1862. of

  1863. Jesus

  1864. Christ

  1865. that

  1866. you've

  1867. heard

  1868. this

  1869. morning

  1870. this

  1871. is

  1872. the

  1873. same

  1874. gospel

  1875. that

  1876. Christians

  1877. have

  1878. been

  1879. preaching

  1880. for

  1881. the

  1882. last

  1883. 2,000

  1884. years

  1885. and

  1886. if

  1887. you're

  1888. here

  1889. this

  1890. morning

  1891. and

  1892. you

  1893. are

  1894. not

  1895. yet

  1896. if

  1897. you

  1898. have

  1899. yet

  1900. to

  1901. put

  1902. your

  1903. faith

  1904. in

  1905. Jesus

  1906. do

  1907. so

  1908. don't

  1909. hesitate

  1910. then

  1911. he

  1912. will

  1913. fill

  1914. you

  1915. with

  1916. your

  1917. spirit

  1918. and

  1919. he

  1920. will

  1921. put

  1922. his

  1923. precious

  1924. name

  1925. on

  1926. you

  1927. he

  1928. who

  1929. has

  1930. an

  1931. ear

  1932. let

  1933. him

  1934. hear

  1935. let's

  1936. pray

  1937. oh

  1938. Lord

  1939. Jesus

  1940. we

  1941. can't

  1942. wait

  1943. we

  1944. can't

  1945. wait

  1946. to

  1947. have

  1948. your

  1949. new

  1950. name

  1951. written

  1952. on

  1953. us

  1954. to

  1955. be

  1956. identified

  1957. forever

  1958. with

  1959. you

  1960. to

  1961. have

  1962. eternal

  1963. unbroken

  1964. communion

  1965. with

  1966. you

  1967. Lord

  1968. Jesus

  1969. we

  1970. cannot

  1971. wait

  1972. to

  1973. be

  1974. vindicated

  1975. for

  1976. you

  1977. to

  1978. be

  1979. able

  1980. to

  1981. tell

  1982. the

  1983. world

  1984. I

  1985. have

  1986. loved

  1987. you

  1988. see

  1989. how

  1990. I

  1991. have
