  1. Good morning, everyone. It's good to be with you guys, good to worship with you.

  2. It looks like a lot of our members are traveling for Thanksgiving, but you guys are here.

  3. I hope that doesn't mean you didn't get to have a good Thanksgiving meal and time with friends and family.

  4. And if you have a Bible, please open with me to Revelation chapter 3.

    Revelation 3 chapter mention

  5. If you don't have a Bible, please raise your hand. We'd love to give you one that you can have and use.

  6. Revelation chapter 3.

    Revelation 3 chapter mention

  7. We've been going through this series for a couple months now, and we're in chapter 3 today,

  8. the last letter of the seven letters to the churches that Jesus writes.

  9. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  10. Father, you are the God, the ancient of days, the God of all truth.

  11. Your word is truth, and your son Jesus is the faithful and true witness.

  12. And so, Lord, today we want to hear from you.

  13. We want to be adjusted by your perspective.

  14. We want to submit to your commands.

  15. So we humble ourselves before you.

  16. Minister to us by your word in your spirit.

  17. Make us a church that is zealous for you, for your glory.

  18. Fill us more and more with your spirit.

  19. We plead with you in the name of Jesus.

  20. Amen.

  21. If you are able, please stand and join us as I read through Revelation 3, verses 14 to 22.

    Revelation 3:14–22

  22. And to the angel of the church in Laodicea, write,

  23. the words of the amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's creation.

  24. I know your works.

  25. You are neither cold nor hot.

  26. Would that you were either cold or hot.

  27. So, because you are lukewarm and neither hot nor cold,

  28. I will spit you out of my mouth.

  29. For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing.

  30. Not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.

  31. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich.

  32. And white garments, so that you may clothe yourselves,

  33. if any shame of your nakedness may not be seen,

  34. and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see.

  35. Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline.

  36. So be zealous and repent.

  37. Behold, I stand at the door and knock.

  38. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door,

  39. I will come into him and eat with him, and he with me.

  40. The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne,

  41. as I also conquered and sat down with my father on his throne.

  42. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

  43. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  44. You may be seated.

  45. If you have been a Christian for a little while,

  46. you have probably been taught at some point that all sinners are equal before the eyes of God.

  47. Or maybe you've heard it said this way,

  48. that the ground is level at the foot of the cross.

  49. This is an important truth,

  50. because the Bible does say that there is no distinction,

  51. for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

  52. God makes no distinction between sinners,

  53. because all of us have fallen short of God's standard,

  54. and all of us need to be justified by God's grace as a gift

  55. through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.

  56. So imagine comparing two sinners in their level of sinfulness,

  57. like comparing two people's heights.

  58. For example, Connor.

  59. You guys know Connor?

  60. Connor Failure?

  61. Is he here?

  62. He's not here.

  63. He's a little bit taller than me.

  64. He's like six foot four.

  65. I'm like five foot four on a good day.

  66. So like I said, he's just a little bit taller than me.

  67. If you want to be a stickler for details,

  68. he's quite a bit taller than me.

  69. But if you look down on me and Connor from a thousand feet up,

  70. we're basically the same height, right?

  71. I mean, that's the difference,

  72. because you're so much higher up that everybody down here looks diminutive.

  73. That's what it's like for God to look at sinners.

  74. We all fall so woefully short of God's perfect righteousness

  75. that our relative righteousness or our relative sinfulness

  76. really doesn't matter in terms of our standing before God.

  77. Whether you broke one law or whether you broke a thousand laws,

  78. you're still a lawbreaker.

  79. As James 2.10 says,

  80. for whoever keeps the whole law but fails at one point

  81. has become guilty of all of it.

  82. In terms of our legal standing before God,

  83. all sinners are in the same boat.

  84. We are all headed to hell apart from God's gracious intervention.

  85. That does not mean, however,

  86. that there aren't lesser sins and greater sins.

  87. There is a gradient.

  88. For example, the Old Testament refers to idolatry and sexual immorality

  89. in particular as a great sin,

  90. which implies in some way that they are worse offenses than other sins.

  91. 1 Corinthians 6.18 singles out sexual immorality

  92. as a sin that is uniquely against one's own body

  93. because it does violence to a Christian's spiritual union with Christ

  94. because their body is a temple of the Spirit.

  95. In John 19.11, Jesus says that the sin of betraying

  96. and handing him over to the authorities

  97. is a greater sin than Pilate's sin of condemning Jesus.

  98. In Matthew 5.19 and in Matthew 23.23,

  99. Jesus clearly teaches that there are least of the commandments

  100. and weightier matters of the law,

  101. which prove that some of God's commands are weightier than others

  102. and constantly be a greater offense to break them.

  103. I say all of that to demonstrate a simple point

  104. that not all sins are equal.

  105. Some sins are worse than others.

  106. Not in terms of our legal standing before God,

  107. but in terms of their relative weightiness.

  108. Some sins are more dangerous than others.

  109. Some sins are more insidious than others.

  110. And the sin that is at the root of all other sin is pride.

  111. It was the first sin.

  112. Before Adam and Eve ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil,

  113. they had pride in thinking that they can, quote,

  114. be like God, knowing good and evil.

  115. They thought that they could be themselves the arbiters of good and evil

  116. in the place of God.

  117. They thought that they knew better than God what is actually good for them.

  118. C.S. Lewis famously wrote in his book, Mere Christianity,

  119. that the essential vice, the utmost evil is pride.

  120. Unchastity, anger, greed, drunkenness, and all that

  121. are mere flea bites in comparison.

  122. It was through pride that the devil became the devil.

  123. Pride leads to every other vice.

  124. It is the complete anti-God state of mind.

  125. End quote.

  126. And if I may take that one step further,

  127. among the various kinds of pride,

  128. there is a particular type of pride that is especially stealthy

  129. and therefore dangerous among Christians,

  130. and that is spiritual pride.

  131. Jonathan Edwards warns of it in this way.

  132. The first and worst cause of errors that abound in our day and age

  133. is spiritual pride.

  134. This is the main door by which the devil comes into the hearts of those

  135. who are zealous for the advancement of Christ.

  136. It is the chief inlet of smoke from the bottomless pit

  137. to darken the mind and mislead the judgment.

  138. Pride is the main handle by which he has hold of Christian persons

  139. and the chief source of all the mischief that he introduces

  140. to clog and hinder a work of God.

  141. Spiritual pride is the main spring,

  142. or at least the main support of all other errors.

  143. Until this disease is cured,

  144. medicines are applied in vain to heal all other disease.

  145. It is by spiritual pride that the mind defends

  146. and justifies itself in other errors

  147. and defends itself against light by which it might be corrected and reclaimed.

  148. The spiritually proud man thinks he is full of light already

  149. and feels that he does not need instruction,

  150. so he is ready to ignore the offer of it.

  151. Because of the nature of spiritual pride,

  152. it is the most secret of all sins.

  153. There is no other matter in which the heart is more deceitful

  154. and unsearchable,

  155. and there is no other sin in the world

  156. that men are so confident in.

  157. The very nature of it is to work self-confidence

  158. and drive away any suspicion of any evil of that kind.

  159. There is no sin so much like the devil

  160. as this for secrecy and subtlety

  161. and appearing in great many shapes

  162. that are undetected and unsuspected.

  163. If you think that's a bit hyperbolic, it's not.

  164. Jonathan Edwards is not alone.

  165. Many teachers, pastors, theologians throughout church history

  166. have said this very thing.

  167. Spiritual pride is difficult to detect

  168. because it is by its very nature self-concealing.

  169. It's like pancreatic cancer,

  170. which has the highest mortality of all the major cancers.

  171. One of the main reasons for its deadliness

  172. is that pancreatic cancer is nearly impossible to catch early.

  173. The pancreas looks like a comma

  174. that's like fallen on its side.

  175. Some of you guys are doctors.

  176. You guys know what I'm talking about.

  177. And it's like nestled.

  178. It's cupped by the small intestine,

  179. and it's like hidden behind the stomach,

  180. the upper abdomen,

  181. and then it meets its tail.

  182. It ends in the spleen.

  183. So it's like it's hidden, surrounded by,

  184. and hidden behind all these other internal organs

  185. so that pancreatic tumors are impossible to see or feel

  186. during routine medical exams.

  187. And so the only way to find them,

  188. to detect them,

  189. is by imaging tests like ultrasound and CT scans

  190. and MRI scans and PET scans.

  191. But people with pancreatic cancer

  192. usually don't sign up for those imaging tests.

  193. Why?

  194. Because in its early stages,

  195. pancreatic cancer is what some doctors call

  196. the silent disease

  197. because it often has no presenting symptoms

  198. in its early stage.

  199. So it's only when it's advanced beyond cure,

  200. often when it's harder to treat,

  201. that pancreatic cancer becomes detected.

  202. And that's why it's so deadly.

  203. That's what spiritual pride is like.

  204. Spiritual pride is self-concealing,

  205. which is why it is so insidious.

  206. The devil often uses it to beguile,

  207. as Jonathan Edwards said,

  208. those who are zealous for the advancement of Christ.

  209. And what we learn here in Revelation 3, 14 to 22,

  210. is that once spiritual pride has taken root

  211. in the heart of a zealous believer,

  212. it saps the zeal right out of him.

  213. It makes him lukewarm.

  214. And that's what we see in Jesus' letter

  215. to the church in Laodicea.

  216. And that's why we must be vigilant

  217. against the creeping effects of spiritual pride.

  218. And this is the main point of our passage this morning.

  219. We must repent of our lukewarmness

  220. and be zealous for the Lord Jesus

  221. so that we might enjoy our communion with him.

  222. I'm gonna first talk about the author,

  223. the sender of this letter, Christ,

  224. who is faithful and true.

  225. Then secondly, I'm gonna talk about the condition,

  226. according to Jesus' evaluation,

  227. the condition of the church in Laodicea,

  228. that they're neither cold nor hot.

  229. Third, I'll talk about the command,

  230. Jesus' command to be zealous and repent.

  231. And then lastly, I'll talk about the reward

  232. that Jesus promises to those who obeyed,

  233. communion, riches, relationships, and rule

  234. that we get to share in Christ.

  235. So let's first talk about Christ,

  236. the author and sender of this letter

  237. to the angel of the church in Laodicea.

  238. So far, in all of the letters,

  239. Jesus introduced himself in a way

  240. that was particularly suitable for the situation

  241. that the church was in on the ground.

  242. So why does Jesus introduce himself in verse 14

  243. as the amen, the faithful and true witness?

  244. The beginning of God's creation.

  245. The general pattern in Jesus' letters

  246. to these seven churches in Revelation 2-3

  247. is that after saying, I know your works,

  248. Jesus then goes on to list their works that he knows.

  249. Sometimes they're good works,

  250. sometimes they're bad works,

  251. usually a mix of both.

  252. And then after sharing his commendations

  253. and then corrections, Jesus issues his command,

  254. and then he gives them the promise of reward.

  255. But here in verse 15,

  256. it kind of doesn't follow that usual pattern

  257. because after saying, I know your works,

  258. there is no commendation whatsoever.

  259. Laodicea and Sardis are the only two churches

  260. that receive no commendation

  261. and receive only corrections from Jesus.

  262. And Laodicea is even worse than Sardis.

  263. It's probably the worst church on this list

  264. because Sardis at least had a few people,

  265. according to Jesus,

  266. a remnant who had not soiled their garments.

  267. A few, there was a faithful few in Sardis,

  268. but there's no mention of such a faithful remnant

  269. in Laodicea.

  270. They're all together, naked,

  271. and in need of being clothed

  272. with the white garments of Christ's righteousness.

  273. Ironically, however,

  274. the church in Laodicea is blind

  275. to their own spiritual poverty and nakedness.

  276. They say in verse 17,

  277. I am rich, I prospered,

  278. and I need nothing.

  279. Not realizing that they are wretched,

  280. pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.

  281. Here's an example of spiritual pride.

  282. The self-confidence and self-satisfaction

  283. of the spiritually proud person

  284. inoculates him against self-suspicion.

  285. He says, I need nothing.

  286. Like an overconfident, complacent driver

  287. who doesn't bother to check the blind spot.

  288. Well, I've seen everything.

  289. And then switches lanes

  290. and then gets into a car wreck.

  291. The spiritually proud person

  292. does not suspect

  293. that he can possibly be blind to something.

  294. The church in Laodicea

  295. does not realize

  296. that they are wretched,

  297. pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.

  298. In fact, these words

  299. are the exact opposite

  300. of how the church in Laodicea

  301. would have viewed themselves.

  302. They didn't think

  303. that they were wretched or pitiable.

  304. They said to themselves,

  305. I prospered, and I need nothing.

  306. They thought they were blessed.

  307. They thought they were enviable.

  308. They didn't view themselves as poor.

  309. They said to themselves,

  310. I'm rich.

  311. And this was, in fact, true,

  312. at least in a material sense.

  313. Laodicea was a prosperous banking center

  314. in its heyday,

  315. located at the junction

  316. of two important roads

  317. that made them a commercial success.

  318. They were so well off

  319. and so self-sufficient

  320. that when a disastrous earthquake

  321. completely leveled the city

  322. in 60 AD,

  323. the Roman Empire, Rome,

  324. offered them disaster relief,

  325. and then they said,

  326. oh, no thank you.

  327. We'll take care of it.

  328. We have enough resources.

  329. That reveals,

  330. that historical fact

  331. reveals both their pride

  332. and their wealth.

  333. They also didn't view themselves

  334. as blind.

  335. Laodicea was a center of medicine

  336. and boasted a prominent medical school

  337. whose most famous graduate

  338. was Demosthenes Philolethes,

  339. an optometrist

  340. who wrote the book

  341. Ophthalmicus,

  342. which dealt with various eye diseases

  343. and is considered

  344. the most influential work

  345. of ophthalmology

  346. in the ancient world.

  347. Laodicea was sought out

  348. for its production

  349. of the Phrygian powder

  350. and eye salve

  351. used to treat

  352. various eye diseases.

  353. So, no,

  354. Laodicean believers

  355. did not see themselves

  356. as blind.

  357. They saw themselves

  358. as the ones

  359. who make other blind people see.

  360. And yet,

  361. they themselves

  362. were spiritually blind.

  363. And finally,

  364. the Laodiceans

  365. did not perceive

  366. of themselves

  367. as being naked.

  368. Laodicea was known

  369. for its textiles,

  370. especially the production

  371. of fine wool.

  372. They believed themselves

  373. to be well clothed

  374. with the finest wool.

  375. They would have never imagined

  376. that they were naked.

  377. Yet,

  378. this is exactly

  379. what Jesus tells them.

  380. You are wretched,

  381. pitiable,

  382. poor,

  383. blind,

  384. and naked

  385. because they were spiritually

  386. all of those things.

  387. Social success,

  388. material wealth,

  389. and physical health

  390. can feed

  391. spiritual pride.

  392. We can falsely assume

  393. that we are doing well

  394. spiritually

  395. when everything else

  396. seems to be going well

  397. in our lives.

  398. Like the Israelites

  399. in Hosea 12, 8,

  400. they say,

  401. ah,

  402. but I am rich.

  403. I found wealth

  404. for myself

  405. in all my labors

  406. they cannot find

  407. in me

  408. iniquity

  409. or sin.

  410. They're connected.

  411. The sinful human heart

  412. has a penchant

  413. for the prosperity gospel

  414. to presume

  415. that health

  416. and wealth

  417. and success

  418. are foolproof signs

  419. of God's pleasure

  420. and favor

  421. while sickness,

  422. poverty,

  423. and failure

  424. are signs

  425. of God's displeasure

  426. and disfavor.

  427. But we see

  428. throughout Scripture

  429. that that is not

  430. necessarily the case.

  431. So in order

  432. to expose

  433. their self-deception

  434. and convince

  435. the church

  436. that thinks

  437. I need nothing,

  438. that in fact

  439. they are very needy,

  440. Jesus introduces

  441. himself to them

  442. as the amen,

  443. the faithful

  444. and true witness,

  445. the all-seeing one,

  446. the only one

  447. who truly

  448. has no blind spot.

  449. The word amen

  450. is typically

  451. an expression

  452. of affirmation

  453. of faith

  454. that something

  455. that God has said

  456. will indeed help

  457. and let it be so.

  458. As far as I know,

  459. this is the only place

  460. where the word amen

  461. is used

  462. as a title

  463. for Jesus.

  464. The word amen

  465. comes from

  466. the Hebrew verb

  467. that means

  468. to believe in

  469. or to trust in

  470. someone

  471. which in turn

  472. comes from

  473. the Hebrew word

  474. for God's faithfulness

  475. or truthfulness.

  476. So the phrase

  477. the faithful

  478. and true witness

  479. is really an explanation

  480. of the title

  481. the amen.

  482. It says

  483. in Genesis 15, 6

  484. that Abram

  485. believed the Lord

  486. or amened

  487. the Lord

  488. and he counted it

  489. to him

  490. as righteousness.

  491. And what's going on

  492. in that passage?

  493. Despite the fact

  494. that his wife Sarai

  495. was well past

  496. childbearing age,

  497. in fact,

  498. post-menopausal,

  499. Abram nevertheless

  500. believed in God's promise

  501. that he would have

  502. a son through Sarai

  503. and that his descendants

  504. would be as numerous

  505. as the stars in the sky.

  506. And God delivered

  507. on that promise.

  508. That's how faithful

  509. or trustworthy God is.

  510. I've said this to you before,

  511. when you're faced

  512. with two options,

  513. an impossibility

  514. and the promise of God,

  515. you can bank on it

  516. that the promise of God

  517. will happen.

  518. because God's word

  519. and his promise

  520. is more reliable

  521. than natural law,

  522. more reliable

  523. than logic,

  524. more reliable

  525. than common sense.

  526. And Jesus is the embodiment

  527. of that faithfulness

  528. and trustworthiness

  529. of God.

  530. That's why he is describing

  531. in 2 Corinthians 1, 20

  532. this way,

  533. all the promises of God

  534. find their yes

  535. in Christ.

  536. That is why

  537. it is through him

  538. that we utter our amen

  539. to God for his glory.

  540. Because all the promises

  541. of God find their fulfillment

  542. ultimately in Jesus

  543. is through Christ

  544. that we can say amen

  545. to all of God's promises,

  546. trusting that not one

  547. of his promises

  548. will fall to the ground.

  549. That's why Jesus

  550. introduces himself

  551. this way,

  552. the amen,

  553. the faithful

  554. and true witness.

  555. He's telling the church

  556. in Laodicea,

  557. I am the true

  558. and faithful witness.

  559. my assessment of you

  560. is more true

  561. and reliable

  562. than your self-assessment.

  563. You think that you are rich,

  564. but I say that you are poor,

  565. so listen to me

  566. and repent.

  567. What about the following phrase,

  568. the beginning of God's creation

  569. in verse 14?

  570. The phrase does not mean

  571. that Jesus is the first thing

  572. that God created.

  573. That's a heretical belief

  574. held by the Jehovah's witnesses.

  575. They believe that Jesus

  576. is the preeminent creature,

  577. but that they nonetheless

  578. believe that Jesus

  579. is a created being.

  580. That's a grave,

  581. unbiblical error.

  582. In Revelation 5,

  583. the four living creatures

  584. which represent

  585. all the creatures

  586. that God ever created,

  587. they fall down

  588. before the lamb,

  589. which is Jesus,

  590. and they worship Jesus.

  591. Jesus is clearly viewed

  592. in that scene

  593. not as one of the creatures

  594. that God created,

  595. represented by the four

  596. living creatures,

  597. but as the creator,

  598. as God,

  599. who is separate from them.

  600. Moreover,

  601. later on in Revelation 19.10,

  602. John tries to fall down

  603. to feet

  604. and bow down

  605. and worship

  606. a mighty angel,

  607. and then the angel

  608. stops him and says,

  609. you must not do that

  610. because I'm a fellow servant

  611. with you

  612. and your brothers

  613. who hold to the testament

  614. of Jesus,

  615. worship God.

  616. So then Jesus,

  617. the lamb of God,

  618. early in Revelation,

  619. accepts the worship

  620. that even a mighty angel

  621. is unworthy to receive

  622. because Jesus is far greater

  623. than a creature.

  624. The word translated

  625. beginning here

  626. is a Greek word

  627. that can also be translated

  628. as the origin

  629. or the source

  630. or the ruler

  631. as it's translated

  632. in Luke 12.11

  633. and Romans 8.38.

  634. So then the phrase

  635. the beginning

  636. of God's creation

  637. is not saying

  638. that Jesus was the first part

  639. of God's creation,

  640. but it's saying

  641. that Jesus is the origin

  642. of all of God's creation

  643. and the ruler

  644. over all of God's creation.

  645. This is confirmed

  646. by what Paul says,

  647. the parallel in Colossians 1.15

  648. where Jesus is called

  649. the firstborn

  650. of all creation.

  651. Once again,

  652. that does not mean

  653. that Jesus is the first being

  654. that God created.

  655. How do we know that?

  656. Because verses 16 to 17

  657. which follow immediately

  658. explains precisely

  659. why Jesus is called

  660. the firstborn

  661. of all creation.

  662. For by him

  663. all things were created

  664. in heaven and on earth,

  665. visible and invisible,

  666. whether thrones

  667. or dominions

  668. or rulers or authorities,

  669. all things were created

  670. through him

  671. and for him

  672. and he is before all things

  673. and in him

  674. all things hold together.

  675. This confirms

  676. our interpretation

  677. of Revelation 3.14.

  678. In a culture,

  679. in an ancient culture

  680. governed by primogeniture

  681. where the firstborns

  682. rule the household

  683. and inherit

  684. the father's estate,

  685. the expression highlights

  686. Jesus' primacy

  687. and rule

  688. over all of God's creation.

  689. Jesus is not

  690. one of the creatures.

  691. He's the one

  692. by whom all things

  693. were created.

  694. He is the first mover,

  695. the originator.

  696. In the beginning

  697. was the word

  698. and the word

  699. was with God

  700. and the word

  701. was God.

  702. He was in the beginning

  703. with God.

  704. All things were made

  705. through him

  706. and without him

  707. was not anything

  708. that was made.

  709. So why is Jesus

  710. highlighting that reality

  711. to the church

  712. in Laodicea?

  713. Because if you're wretched,

  714. you need the one

  715. who can make you blessed.

  716. If you're pitiable,

  717. you need the one

  718. who can show you mercy.

  719. If you're poor,

  720. you need the one

  721. who can make you rich.

  722. If you're blind,

  723. you need the one

  724. who can make you see.

  725. If you're naked

  726. in your shame,

  727. you need the one

  728. who can clothe you

  729. and cover you

  730. with his righteousness.

  731. God had promised

  732. to create a new heavens

  733. and a new earth.

  734. In Isaiah 65, 17,

  735. Jesus is the fulfillment

  736. of that promise.

  737. As it says

  738. in 2 Corinthians 5, 17,

  739. therefore,

  740. if anyone is in Christ,

  741. he is a new creation.

  742. The old has gone.

  743. Behold,

  744. the new has come.

  745. So Jesus

  746. clearly doesn't pull

  747. any punches here

  748. in this letter,

  749. but he's also comforting

  750. the church in Laodicea

  751. by reminding them

  752. that in spite of their wretched

  753. and pitiable condition,

  754. he can make them new again

  755. because he is the creator.

  756. He's the one

  757. who the originator

  758. of the creation

  759. and originator

  760. of the new creation,

  761. he can make the blind see

  762. and the poor rich.

  763. Now let's look at

  764. the faithful

  765. and true assessment

  766. of Jesus,

  767. the faithful

  768. and true witness

  769. in verses 15 to 16.

  770. I know your works.

  771. You are neither cold

  772. nor hot.

  773. Would that you were

  774. either cold or hot.

  775. So because you are lukewarm

  776. and neither hot

  777. nor cold,

  778. I will spit you

  779. out of my mouth.

  780. This is their condition.

  781. Neither cold nor hot.

  782. Sometimes people mistakenly think

  783. that being hot here

  784. represents being passionate,

  785. being on fire for Jesus,

  786. and then being cold

  787. represents rejecting Jesus

  788. altogether.

  789. If that were the case,

  790. these verses would be similar

  791. to what God says

  792. to the Israelites

  793. in 1 Kings 18-21.

  794. How long will you go limping

  795. between two different opinions?

  796. If the Lord is God,

  797. follow him.

  798. But if Baal,

  799. then follow him.

  800. But there,

  801. in that context,

  802. God is exposing

  803. the hypocrisy

  804. and two-faced nature

  805. of Israel's worship

  806. and allegiance.

  807. He's telling them

  808. that in fact

  809. it is not possible

  810. to serve both Yahweh

  811. and Baal

  812. and that they must

  813. make a choice.

  814. But that's not

  815. what Jesus is saying

  816. here in Revelation 3.

  817. Here in verses 15 to 16,

  818. being cold

  819. and hot

  820. are both good things.

  821. The choice is not

  822. between one bad option

  823. and one good option,

  824. but between two good options.

  825. Jesus says in verse 15,

  826. would that you were

  827. either cold or hot.

  828. Jesus would prefer,

  829. Jesus would be happy

  830. if the church

  831. were either cold

  832. or hot.

  833. If being cold

  834. represents completely

  835. rejecting Jesus,

  836. I don't think he would

  837. present the two options

  838. this way

  839. as if both were acceptable.

  840. Laodicea was located

  841. near two other

  842. ancient cities,

  843. Hierapolis,

  844. Hierapolis,

  845. and Colossae.

  846. All of them

  847. were in that same region

  848. of Phrygia

  849. in Asia Minor,

  850. modern Turkey.

  851. And why is that significant?

  852. Because Hierapolis

  853. was famous

  854. for its hot springs,

  855. which were great

  856. for relaxing

  857. and healing baths.

  858. And Colossae

  859. near the mountains

  860. had access

  861. to cold,

  862. pure,

  863. refreshing water

  864. that came down

  865. from the mountains.

  866. But Laodicea,

  867. removed from

  868. that cold water

  869. from the mountains,

  870. which by the time

  871. it was transported

  872. to where they are,

  873. would be heated

  874. and be lukewarm.

  875. And Laodicea

  876. also didn't have access

  877. to the hot springs

  878. of Hierapolis.

  879. They had to

  880. pipe that water in,

  881. and by the time

  882. it got there,

  883. it was tepid,

  884. lukewarm.

  885. And having to drink

  886. that lukewarm water

  887. was a sore spot

  888. for this otherwise

  889. wealthy and proud city.

  890. And Jesus is mentioning

  891. that reality

  892. to drive his point home.

  893. You know that

  894. that lukewarm water

  895. that you have to drink

  896. every day

  897. that makes you

  898. want to puke?

  899. that's what you are

  900. like to me

  901. because of your

  902. spiritual lukewarmness.

  903. Hot water

  904. is relaxing,

  905. cold water

  906. is refreshing,

  907. but tepid water

  908. is just

  909. meh, right?

  910. I was just

  911. at a restaurant

  912. recently

  913. that served

  914. our family

  915. lukewarm water.

  916. I don't know,

  917. it was like

  918. literally lukewarm.

  919. I'd never been

  920. served that

  921. in a restaurant before.

  922. And none of my kids

  923. wanted to drink it

  924. because it's gross.

  925. We had to ask

  926. for ice.

  927. Similarly,

  928. when you go to a cafe,

  929. menus have all kinds

  930. of hot coffees

  931. and all kinds

  932. of iced coffees.

  933. When have you

  934. gone to a cafe

  935. and saw on the menu

  936. lukewarm coffee?

  937. I mean,

  938. nobody wants that.

  939. So Jesus is saying

  940. be either cold

  941. or hot.

  942. Be earnest

  943. and be fervent

  944. about something.

  945. The church in Ephesus

  946. that we saw

  947. earlier in chapter 2

  948. had theological discernment

  949. and so they rejected

  950. the false teachers

  951. but they had no love.

  952. The church in Thyatira

  953. had love

  954. but they had no

  955. theological discernment

  956. and they tolerated

  957. false teachers.

  958. These churches

  959. were not perfect

  960. but they were fervent

  961. about something.

  962. They were eager

  963. and earnest

  964. about something.

  965. loving and loving

  966. and being compassionate

  967. toward your neighbors

  968. then do that.

  969. Even better,

  970. do both.

  971. But be earnest

  972. and fervent

  973. about something

  974. because the church

  975. in Laodicea

  976. had no strength

  977. and no commendable

  978. attributes.

  979. They're good

  980. at neither being

  981. hot nor cold.

  982. They're a bland

  983. mediocrity

  984. in every way.

  985. A lukewarm

  986. tepid water

  987. is good for nothing.

  988. So Jesus issues

  989. a severe warning

  990. in verse 16.

  991. Because you are lukewarm

  992. and neither hot

  993. nor cold

  994. I will spit you

  995. out of my mouth.

  996. The word translated

  997. spit here

  998. is actually

  999. most commonly

  1000. means to vomit.

  1001. There's another

  1002. Greek word

  1003. that means

  1004. to spit

  1005. and that's not

  1006. the one

  1007. that's used here.

  1008. The Greek translation

  1009. of Isaiah 19.14

  1010. uses that same

  1011. Greek word here

  1012. used in Revelation 3.16

1013. to refer to a drunken man

  1014. staggering in his vomit.

  1015. So Jesus is saying

  1016. you are nauseating.

  1017. You make me sick.

  1018. Make me throw up.

  1019. The church in Laodicea

  1020. is on the verge

  1021. of being rejected.

  1022. They're about to

  1023. the light

1024. the fire of the spirit

  1025. on their lampstand

1026. is about to go out

  1027. because of their

  1028. lack of zeal.

  1029. Why do I think

  1030. lukewarmness here

  1031. is a vivid picture

1032. of their lack of zeal?

  1033. Because of Jesus'

  1034. prescription

  1035. in verse 19.

  1036. Be zealous

  1037. and repent.

  1038. Jesus commands

  1039. the church

  1040. in Laodicea

  1041. to be zealous

  1042. precisely because

  1043. they are lukewarm.

  1044. Neither cold nor hot.

  1045. That brings us

  1046. to my third point

  1047. the command

  1048. be zealous

  1049. and repent.

1050. It says in verse 19

  1051. those whom I love

  1052. I reprove

  1053. and discipline

  1054. so be zealous

  1055. and repent.

  1056. It's so gracious

  1057. of Jesus here

  1058. to say this

  1059. before giving them

  1060. the command

  1061. to say

  1062. those whom I love

  1063. I reprove

  1064. and discipline.

  1065. this is a church

  1066. that makes

  1067. Jesus want to puke.

  1068. It's a church

  1069. that has nothing

  1070. going for it.

  1071. It's a church

  1072. that has zero thing

  1073. to commend

  1074. and yet

  1075. to that church

  1076. Jesus says

  1077. I am reproving you

  1078. because I love you.

  1079. I know these things

  1080. are hard to hear

  1081. church in Laodicea

  1082. but I want you

  1083. to know

1084. that I am disciplining you

  1085. because I love you.

  1086. you've got nothing

  1087. lovable about you

  1088. and yet

  1089. I love you

  1090. because you are mine.

  1091. The Lord disciplines

  1092. those whom he loves

  1093. says in Hebrews 12

  1094. a father disciplines

  1095. the son

  1096. the child

  1097. that he loves

  1098. that's why I think

  1099. even though the church

  1100. in Laodicea

  1101. is on the verge

  1102. of ceasing to be

  1103. a true church

1104. they are a true church

  1105. because

  1106. Jesus

  1107. reproves them

  1108. because he loves them

  1109. because as we saw

  1110. earlier in Revelation 1

  1111. they still have

  1112. the golden lampstand

  1113. their lampstand

1114. is one of the seven

  1115. golden lampstands

  1116. before God's throne

  1117. and they have

  1118. an angelic representative

  1119. in heaven

  1120. that's why he's writing

  1121. to the church

1122. to the angel of the church

  1123. in Laodicea

  1124. Jesus doesn't want

  1125. to spit them out

  1126. Jesus doesn't want

  1127. to vomit them out

  1128. so this warning

  1129. serves to preserve them

1130. to bring them to repentance

1131. so that that would not happen

  1132. be zealous

  1133. and repent

  1134. the word zealous

  1135. used in verse 19

  1136. refers

  1137. it's used

  1138. throughout the Bible

1139. it refers to the church

  1140. in Corinth's

  1141. readiness

  1142. or their eagerness

  1143. to give financially

  1144. for the relief

  1145. of the poor Christians

  1146. in Jerusalem

  1147. in 2 Corinthians 9

  1148. in 2 Corinthians 7

  1149. 11

  1150. the word zeal

  1151. is parallel

  1152. to earnestness

  1153. and refers to

  1154. the believer's

  1155. godly grief

  1156. and repentance

  1157. from sin

  1158. in John 2

  1159. 13-17

  1160. Jesus is turning

  1161. over tables

  1162. and driving out

  1163. the money changers

  1164. from the temple

  1165. because it says

  1166. quoting Psalm 69-9

  1167. zeal for your house

  1168. will consume me

  1169. because Jesus

  1170. was consumed

  1171. by zeal

  1172. for the house

  1173. of the Lord

  1174. which should have been

  1175. a house of prayer

1176. and not a house of trade

  1177. so to be zealous

  1178. is to be eager

  1179. and to be earnest

  1180. to be intensely serious

  1181. to be dedicated

  1182. to something

1183. but don't get me wrong

  1184. by zeal

  1185. I'm not just

  1186. referring to

  1187. mere emotional fervor

  1188. people have different

  1189. upper and lower

  1190. registers of emotions

  1191. and so

  1192. a person's

  1193. emotional expressiveness

  1194. is not necessarily

  1195. an accurate indicator

  1196. of their zeal

  1197. so what then

  1198. is an accurate indicator

  1199. of their zeal

  1200. English pastor

  1201. J.C. Ryle

  1202. from the 1800s

  1203. helpfully describes

  1204. Christian zeal

  1205. in this way

1206. I think we have the quote

  1207. to show

  1208. a zealous man

  1209. in religion

  1210. is preeminently

  1211. a man

  1212. of one thing

  1213. it is not enough

  1214. to say he is

  1215. earnest

  1216. hardy

  1217. uncompromising

  1218. wholehearted

  1219. fervent in spirit

  1220. he only sees

  1221. one thing

  1222. he cares

  1223. for one

  1224. thing

  1225. he lives

  1226. for one

  1227. thing

  1228. he is swallowed

  1229. up in

  1230. one

  1231. thing

  1232. and that one

  1233. thing is to

  1234. please God

  1235. whether he lives

  1236. whether he dies

  1237. whether he has

  1238. health

  1239. or whether he has

  1240. sickness

  1241. whether he is rich

  1242. or whether he is

  1243. poor

  1244. whether he pleases

  1245. man

  1246. or whether he gives

  1247. offense

  1248. whether he is thought

  1249. wise

  1250. or whether he's

  1251. thought foolish

  1252. whether he gets

  1253. blame

1254. or whether he gets praise,

  1255. whether he gets honor,

  1256. whether he gets shame.

1257. For all this, the zealous man cares nothing at all.

1258. He burns for one thing

1259. and that one thing is to please God

1260. and to advance God's glory.

1261. If he is consumed in the very burning,

1262. he cares not for it.

  1263. He is content.

1264. He feels that like a lamp he's made to burn

1265. and if consumed in burning,

1266. he has but done the work for which God appointed him.

1267. Are you a man or are you a woman

1268. who is consumed with the one thing?

1269. But one thing I do.

1270. Paul said, forgetting what is behind

1271. but straining toward what is ahead

1272. so that I may press on toward the goal

1273. for the price of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

  1274. The one thing.

  1275. One thing, David prays,

1276. I have asked of the Lord.

1277. One thing that I will seek after

1278. that I might dwell in the house of the Lord

1279. all the days of my life

1280. to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord

1281. and to inquire in his temple.

1282. It's the one thing David sought.

1283. As Jesus tells Martha in Luke 10, 38 to 42,

1284. you are anxious and troubled about many things

1285. but one thing is necessary.

1286. And what's that one thing to sit at the feet of Jesus?

  1287. And here's a telltale sign that

  1288. you're losing your zeal.

  1289. Look at verse 17.

  1290. You say, I'm rich.

  1291. I prospered.

  1292. And I need nothing.

  1293. That's the telltale sign.

  1294. Self-sufficiency.

  1295. Self-sufficiency.

  1296. Spiritual complacency.

1297. That's the telltale sign of lukewarmness.

1298. When was the last time you clung to Jesus

1299. because you realized your desperate wickedness

1300. and your dire need for his mercy?

1301. When was the last time you fell upon your knees in prayer

1302. because you realized that your utter weakness

  1303. and complete helplessness

  1304. and Jesus is all-sufficiency?

1305. Jesus says in John 15, verse 5,

    John 15:5

  1306. I am the vine.

  1307. You are the branches.

1308. Whoever abides in me and I in him,

1309. he it is that bears much fruit.

  1310. For apart from me,

  1311. you can do nothing.

1312. A zealous branch that bears much fruit

1313. is one that abides in Jesus

  1314. and depends on Jesus,

1315. knowing full well that apart from him,

  1316. she can do nothing.

1317. If you catch yourself saying,

  1318. I'm rich.

  1319. I prospered.

  1320. I need nothing.

1321. Remember the height from which you have fallen and repent.

1322. Note that drinks default to becoming lukewarm.

1323. If you want to stay cold,

1324. you need to keep the drink in the fridge

1325. or you need to keep putting new ice in it.

1326. If you want water to stay hot,

1327. you need to keep it on the hot plate.

1328. As soon as you remove it from the source of the chill

1329. or the source of the heat,

1330. it quickly becomes tepid room temperature water.

1331. This is why we must not be slothful in zeal

1332. but be fervent in the Holy Spirit.

1333. As it says in Romans 12, 11,

1334. we need to keep the fire burning

1335. and keep the ice freezing

1336. by abiding in the source,

1337. the origin of God's new creation, Jesus,

1338. who gives us the Holy Spirit.

1339. Listen to Jesus' counsel to us in verse 18.

1340. I counsel you to buy from me,

1341. gold refined by fire so that you may be rich

1342. and white garments so that you may clothe yourself

1343. and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen

1344. and salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see.

1345. Note how Jesus is systematically breaking down

1346. everything that the church in Laodicea took pride in.

1347. Their wealth, their wool, clothing,

  1348. their eye salve.

1349. Jesus wants them to acknowledge their spiritual poverty

1350. and come buy from him gold refined by fire.

  1351. True riches, heavenly riches

1352. that will not be burned away in the final judgment.

1353. Jesus wants them to acknowledge their spiritual nakedness

1354. and instead of their wool garments

1355. to put on the white garments of Christ

  1356. to cover their shame.

1357. Jesus wants them to acknowledge their spiritual blindness

1358. and instead of boasting in their eye salve

1359. to get the spiritual eye salve

  1360. that only Christ offers

1361. and the only cure to spiritual blindness.

  1362. Let me ask you,

1363. what are the things that you take pride in

1364. that you are tempted to depend on,

1365. to lean on for your sense of well-being?

1366. Is it your youth and beauty?

  1367. Is it your intelligence?

1368. Is it your emotional awareness and social coolness?

1369. Is it your athleticism, physical prowess?

1370. Is it your wealth or success in the world?

1371. Or is it your academic or family pedigree?

  1372. Brothers and sisters,

1373. we're in a dangerous place in the world.

1374. We're in one of the wealthiest cities in the world,

1375. one of the most highly educated cities in the world.

1376. There's so many things that you can point to

1377. that you can take pride in.

  1378. But don't, don't, don't derive

1379. an ounce of your assurance,

1380. an ounce of your confidence

1381. from any of those things.

1382. Because to the degree that you rely on those things,

1383. that much you will not be relying on Jesus.

1384. And you'll be farther away from him.

1385. Cling to the one thing.

1386. But note the irony of Jesus' command.

1387. He just told the church in Laodicea,

  1388. you're dirt poor.

  1389. You got nothing.

1390. And then he tells them,

1391. I counsel you to buy from me.

  1392. Gold refined by fire,

1393. so that you might be rich.

  1394. How's a dirt poor church

1395. supposed to buy gold refined in the fire?

1396. Remember our call to worship from Isaiah 55.

  1397. Come.

1398. Everyone who thirsts come to the waters.

1399. And he who has no money,

  1400. come buy and eat.

1401. Come buy wine and milk without money

  1402. and without price.

1403. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread

1404. and your labor for that which does not satisfy?

  1405. Listen diligently to me

1406. and eat what is good

1407. and delight yourselves in rich food.

1408. Incline your ear and come to me.

1409. Hear that your soul may live

1410. and I will make with you an everlasting covenant

1411. my steadfast, sure love for David.

1412. We can buy heavenly food

  1413. and heavenly riches

1414. and gold refined in the fire

  1415. without money

  1416. and without price

1417. because Jesus has paid the price.

  1418. The penalty for sin

  1419. is death

  1420. and separation from God

1421. and we were all once slaves to sin

1422. and not a single one of us

1423. could afford that ransom price

  1424. to secure our freedom

1425. but God paid that price

  1426. in Jesus Christ,

  1427. his only son

  1428. on the cross

1429. because he died for our sins

1430. and was raised from the dead.

  1431. We were like that.

1432. Imagine like a homeless orphan

1433. just walking along the street

  1434. and on Thanksgiving Day

1435. and he looks into a well-lit house

  1436. in their dining room

  1437. and there's a beautiful family

  1438. and they're enjoying a sumptuous feast

1439. and then he's looking longingly

1440. but he cannot afford it.

1441. He has not a penny to his name.

  1442. He has no family

  1443. and God the Father

  1444. took his son

1445. make him take our place

1446. so that we can be brought into his family

  1447. adopted as his children

1448. so that we can enjoy

  1449. a heavenly feast

  1450. without any money,

  1451. without any price

1452. because he paid the price.

1453. and look at the amazing promise

  1454. that Jesus gives us

  1455. in verses 20 to 22,

  1456. the communion.

1457. I wish I could spend an hour on this.

1458. I'm just gonna have to wrap up here.

  1459. It says,

  1460. Behold,

1461. I stand at the door and knock.

1462. If anyone hears my voice

  1463. and opens the door,

1464. I will come into him

  1465. and eat with him

  1466. and he with me.

  1467. The one who conquers,

  1468. I will grant him

1469. to sit with me on my throne

  1470. as I also conquered

1471. and sat down with my father

  1472. on his throne.

  1473. This is why

  1474. spiritual pride,

  1475. the lack of zeal,

  1476. the complacency,

  1477. self-sufficiency

  1478. is such,

  1479. it's such a grievous sin

1480. because it closes the door

  1481. on Jesus.

1482. Instead of abiding in Jesus

  1483. and deriving our strength

  1484. and life from him,

  1485. it closes the door

  1486. on Jesus

  1487. when we say,

  1488. Oh,

  1489. I don't need that.

  1490. I got everything I need.

  1491. This is why Paul

  1492. in 2 Corinthians 12

  1493. is so eager

1494. to boast in his weakness.

  1495. See,

1496. this doesn't make any sense

  1497. if you don't understand

  1498. this reality.

  1499. He asked God,

  1500. pleaded with God

  1501. to take away

  1502. some kind of weakness

1503. that he was wrestling with

  1504. and God refused

1505. to take it away from him

1506. and instead God said to him,

1507. My grace is sufficient for you

  1508. for my power

  1509. is made perfect

  1510. in weakness.

  1511. Therefore,

  1512. Paul says,

  1513. I will boast

  1514. all the more gladly

  1515. of my weaknesses

1516. so that the power of Christ

  1517. may rest upon me.

1518. For the sake of Christ

  1519. and I am content

  1520. with weaknesses,

  1521. insults,

  1522. hardships,

  1523. persecutions,

  1524. and calamities

1525. for when I am weak

  1526. then I am strong.

  1527. strong.

  1528. That's why as Christians

  1529. we boast

  1530. in our weaknesses.

  1531. Hear all these things

1532. that I am weak at.

  1533. Hear all these things

  1534. that I cannot do

1535. that I'm not good at.

  1536. Hear all these things

1537. in which I have suffered.

  1538. Hear all these ways

1539. in which I am ridiculed

  1540. and persecuted.

  1541. Hear all my weaknesses.

  1542. Let's boast in them

1543. because when I am weak

  1544. then I am strong

  1545. because then

  1546. in all those weaknesses

  1547. Christ's all sufficiency

  1548. meets us.

  1549. In all our weaknesses

  1550. Christ's fullness

  1551. meets us

  1552. so that he becomes

  1553. all in all.

  1554. Don't you want

  1555. that communion with him?

  1556. Look at how intimate

  1557. this picture is.

  1558. Table fellowship

  1559. in the ancient world

  1560. especially

1561. but even in our day

  1562. implies intimate relationship.

  1563. You don't get

  1564. a random stranger

  1565. out on the street

  1566. and invite them

  1567. to your house

  1568. for a dinner.

  1569. You invite your friends

  1570. to dinner.

  1571. Jesus is offering

  1572. his friendship

  1573. which is remarkable

1574. because he is the king.

1575. I will come eat with you.

1576. You could eat with me.

  1577. Amen.

  1578. Amen.

  1579. Amen.

  1580. This is not

  1581. speaking of unbelievers

  1582. needing to open

1583. the door of their hearts

  1584. to receive Jesus.

  1585. He is talking

  1586. to a church here.

  1587. In what ways

  1588. through your own

  1589. self-sufficiency

  1590. and in your pride

  1591. are you shutting

  1592. the door

  1593. on Jesus

1594. instead of opening up your weaknesses

1595. and letting him come in.

1596. And if we do that, he says,

1597. the one who conquers and endures to the end,

1598. I will grant him to sit with me on my throne

1599. as I also conquered and sat down

1600. with my father on his throne.

1601. This is a promise for the future,

1602. the ultimate fulfillment of this,

1603. but even now those who put their faith in Jesus

1604. get to reign with Jesus.

1605. Ephesians 1.21 teaches that God the Father

1606. raised Jesus from the dead

1607. and seated him at his right hand

  1608. in the heavenly places,

1609. far above all rule and authority and power and dominion

1610. and above every name that is named.

1611. And then shortly thereafter in Ephesians 2.6,

1612. it says that God raised us up

1613. and seated us with Jesus

1614. in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

  1615. That's our lot.

1616. You get to reign with Jesus

1617. at the right hand of God the Father,

1618. reign with Jesus who has all authority

1619. and dominion and power and rule.

  1620. Compared to that,

  1621. how poor is

  1622. Elon Musk,

  1623. Jeff Bezos?

  1624. They're dirt poor.

  1625. Compared to that,

1626. how weak and powerless is Joe Biden,

  1627. Xi Jinping,

  1628. and Vladimir Putin?

  1629. How weak,

  1630. how powerless.

1631. Do you see the kind of power,

  1632. kind of wealth,

  1633. the kind of privilege

1634. we've been offered in Jesus?

  1635. Let's claim that

1636. by being weak and humble,

  1637. being zealous,

  1638. abiding in Jesus.

  1639. Let's pray together.

  1640. Let's pray together.

  1641. Let's pray together.

  1642. Let's pray together.

  1643. Let's pray together.

  1644. Father,

1645. we repent of our lukewarmness,

1646. but we dare not try to

  1647. manufacture or produce

  1648. this zeal

  1649. with our own willpower,

1650. for we know that it comes from you.

  1651. So we pray now,

  1652. because we need you.

1653. We need you to make us burn

  1654. hot

  1655. for your glory.

  1656. Make us a church

1657. that is about the one thing

1658. to know and love you,

  1659. to serve you.

  1660. Oh, make us zealous.

1661. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1662. Amen.
