  1. All right, it's good to worship with you guys all this fine Advent season.

  2. If you have your Bibles, let's open them up to Revelation chapter 6.

    Revelation 6 chapter mention

  3. We are continuing on in the series.

  4. We're doing a mini-series right now as we preach through the book of Revelation.

  5. But right now for the Advent season, for the month of December,

  6. we're doing this mini-series called Between the Advents.

  7. And I think although our passage may not be, quote-unquote,

  8. a very Christmassy passage, we think that it's going to be very relevant

  9. for us to turn our eyes to God and wait for him for the second Advent of Christ.

  10. If you don't have a Bible, please, you could just raise your hand

  11. and we would be happy to gift one to you.

  12. That's our Christmas gift to you, so you could keep it and use it for this time

  13. and read it for yourself as well.

  14. Let's pray for the reading and preaching of God's word

  15. before we read Revelation chapter 6.

    Revelation 6 chapter mention

  16. Oh, Holy Father, we come before you knowing that we are empty-handed,

  17. we are poor, we are naked, we are exposed,

  18. but it's only your grace that covers us so that we can stand on that final day.

  19. God, I pray that you would speak through your word,

  20. address us through your word, so that we would have a bigger vision of you and your glory.

  21. God, that we would be transformed to see all that you are,

  22. that you are completely, wholly sovereign over our entire lives,

  23. and that we would trust you.

  24. We would trust you with all of it, God.

  25. So I pray you would show us the things that we don't see,

  26. to the things that we don't see, show us.

  27. To the things that we don't know, teach us.

  28. To the things that we have yet to believe,

  29. make us, Lord.

  30. In Jesus' name we pray.

  31. Amen.

  32. Let's stand, if you are able, for the reading of God's word.

  33. I'm going to read the whole chapter together.

  34. Now I watched when the Lamb opened one of the seven seals,

  35. and I heard one of the four living creatures say with a voice like thunder,

  36. Come.

  37. And I looked, and behold, a white horse,

  38. and its rider had a bow,

  39. and a crown was given to him,

  40. and he came out conquering and to conquer.

  41. When he opened the second seal,

  42. I heard the second living creature say,

  43. Come.

  44. And out came another horse, bright red.

  45. Its rider was permitted to take peace from the earth

  46. so that people should slay one another,

  47. and he was given a great sword.

  48. When he opened the third seal,

  49. I heard the third living creature say,

  50. Come.

  51. And I looked, and behold, a black horse.

  52. And its rider had a pair of scales in his hand,

  53. and I heard what seemed to be a voice in the midst of the four living creatures

  54. saying,

  55. A quart of wheat for a Daenerys,

  56. and three quarts of barley for a Daenerys,

  57. and do not harm the oil and the wine.

  58. When he opened the fourth seal,

  59. I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say,

  60. Come.

  61. And I looked, and behold, a pale horse,

  62. and its rider's name was Death,

  63. and Hades followed him.

  64. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth

  65. to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence

  66. and by wild beasts of the earth.

  67. When he opened the fifth seal,

  68. I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain

  69. for the word of God and for the witness they had borne.

  70. They cried out with a loud voice,

  71. O sovereign Lord, holy and true,

  72. how long before you will judge and avenge our blood

  73. on those who dwell on the earth?

  74. Then they were each given a white robe

  75. and told to rest a little longer

  76. until the number of their fellow servants

  77. and their brothers should be complete,

  78. who were to be killed

  79. as they themselves had been.

  80. When he opened the sixth seal,

  81. I looked, and behold,

  82. there was a great earthquake,

  83. and the sun became black as sackcloth,

  84. the full moon became like blood,

  85. and the stars of the sky fell to the earth

  86. as the fig tree sheds its winter fruit

  87. when shaken by a gale.

  88. The sky vanished like a scroll

  89. that is being rolled up,

  90. and every mountain and island

  91. was removed from its place.

  92. Then the kings of the earth

  93. and the great ones

  94. and the generals

  95. and the rich

  96. and the powerful

  97. and everyone,

  98. slave and free,

  99. hid themselves in the caves

  100. and among the rocks

  101. of the mountains,

  102. calling to the mountains and rocks,

  103. fall on us and hide us

  104. from the face of him

  105. who is seated on the throne

  106. and from the wrath of the Lamb

  107. for the great day of their wrath has come,

  108. and who can stand?

  109. This is God's holy

  110. and authoritative word.

  111. You may be seated.

  112. In his early 20s,

  113. famous author John Green,

  114. before he went on to write

  115. the young adult novel,

  116. The Fault in Our Stars,

  117. I'm sure many of you guys

  118. have heard of it,

  119. which would go on to sell

  120. over 20 million copies,

  121. have multiple movie adaptations,

  122. he was preparing for himself

  123. to devote his life to ministry.

  124. Did you guys know that?

  125. I didn't know that.

  126. He was prepping for seminaries,

  127. prepping to go into full-time ministry,

  128. so he worked as a student chaplain

  129. in a children's hospital.

  130. And in one of the hardest nights

  131. of his life,

  132. on a night shift,

  133. he suddenly had a three-year-old boy

  134. who was shuttled into the emergency room

  135. with severe third-degree burns.

  136. He recounts the smell,

  137. the sights,

  138. the screams,

  139. the sobbing.

  140. He later recalls that

  141. the doctor who was tasked with

  142. help saving that boy's life,

  143. he remembered meeting her

  144. in the employee break room,

  145. and she was throwing up

  146. into the trash,

  147. saying,

  148. that boy is gonna die,

  149. and I know his last words.

  150. John would never forget that night.

  151. He would never forget

  152. how absent God felt to him that night.

  153. So he not only left the track to ministry,

  154. but he abandoned his faith altogether.

  155. But that curiosity of the boy

  156. never left him.

  157. It bothered him,

  158. nagged after him,

  159. day after day after day.

  160. He always thought of him.

  161. And so one day,

  162. 20 years later,

  163. he actually Googled him

  164. and see what he could find.

  165. And he actually found that

  166. this boy,

  167. he was alive.

  168. And his name is Nick.

  169. And so on a podcast

  170. that I listened to,

  171. he ends up on a video chat

  172. with this same three-year-old boy

  173. just 20 years later.

  174. He finds out that

  175. he's an MBA student.

  176. He just finished his undergrad degree.

  177. He's doing a live,

  178. he's alive and well,

  179. as much as someone could be

  180. with severe third-degree burns

  181. as that young of an age.

  182. But the amazing thing

  183. is that he found out

  184. that Nick was a faithful Christian.

  185. Despite being in chronic pain

  186. from the accident,

  187. Nick explains to John

  188. the awesome truth

  189. of Romans 8, 28,

  190. how God used this

  191. absolutely horrific incident

  192. to drive him

  193. and his nominally Christian family

  194. finally to devote

  195. their entire lives

  196. to Christ.

  197. I think this story

  198. is such a powerful example

  199. of the importance

  200. of interpreting

  201. the suffering

  202. that we have in our lives

  203. through the lens

  204. of Scripture.

  205. Because the reality is,

  206. suffering will either

  207. drive us away

  208. or to God.

  209. It's very polarizing.

  210. It's hard to stay neutral

  211. about God

  212. when you're experiencing suffering.

  213. Both John and Nick

  214. saw and experienced

  215. the exact same incident

  216. of tragedy,

  217. but in the end,

  218. they came to very

  219. different conclusions.

  220. Nick was able to see

  221. that God was completely

  222. sovereign over his life,

  223. which didn't take away

  224. the experience of his

  225. chronic pain altogether,

  226. of course,

  227. but assured him

  228. that his pain

  229. is neither indiscriminate

  230. or just by chance.

  231. Instead,

  232. it's all,

  233. he had hope,

  234. he had faith

  235. that it was all

  236. part of a greater plan

  237. for good.

  238. And we need to learn

  239. to do the same,

  240. brothers and sisters,

  241. because Scripture teaches us,

  242. it makes us very clear

  243. that suffering

  244. is part and parcel

  245. of the Christian life

  246. as we identify

  247. with Christ,

  248. the slain lamb.

  249. without remembering

  250. the one who is in control

  251. over it all,

  252. then suffering

  253. and pain,

  254. that's gonna swallow us up.

  255. Our text in Revelation 6,

  256. however,

  257. shows us

  258. the God who was,

  259. the God who is,

  260. and the God who is to come

  261. is sovereign.

  262. So that's the main point

  263. of my sermon today.

  264. We can,

  265. we must endure

  266. the suffering

  267. of the tribulation

  268. because God is sovereign

  269. over it all.

  270. We'll see how God

  271. is sovereign

  272. over the current woes

  273. of the world

  274. in the first

  275. to the fourth seals,

  276. how he's sovereign

  277. in giving rest

  278. to the resolute

  279. in the fifth seal,

  280. and he's sovereign

  281. over the future judgment

  282. of the wicked,

  283. the future wrath

  284. of the wicked.

  285. That's the sixth seal.

  286. As we remember last week,

  287. Sean powerfully preached

  288. on how the slain lamb

  289. of Jesus Christ,

  290. he alone is worthy

  291. of opening up these seals.

  292. So he begins to do

  293. what only he has

  294. the authority to do.

  295. Each time the risen lamb

  296. opens up

  297. one of these first four seals,

  298. there's a repeating pattern.

  299. First,

  300. one of the four living creatures

  301. cries out

  302. with a booming thunderous voice,

  303. come.

  304. And immediately,

  305. a horse with a color

  306. that's related

  307. to its tribulation,

  308. like blood, red,

  309. and war,

  310. and its rider,

  311. so the horse

  312. and its rider,

  313. they come out

  314. and afflict the earth.

  315. So by opening

  316. these first four seals,

  317. Jesus unleashes

  318. onto the world

  319. the four horsemen

  320. of the apocalypse,

  321. who are God's

  322. spiritual instruments

  323. to unleash

  324. onto the earth

  325. conquest,

  326. war,

  327. famine,

  328. and death

  329. in that particular order.

  330. And in that order,

  331. you can see

  332. just the natural

  333. clear progression, right?

  334. You can see

  335. that conquest leads to war,

  336. war,

  337. and conquest,

  338. they can lead

  339. to famine,

  340. and then all these

  341. ultimately culminate

  342. in death.

  343. And while you might

  344. be excited

  345. or scared

  346. to hear all about

  347. the four horsemen

  348. of the apocalypse,

  349. as if this is

  350. something new

  351. in scripture,

  352. this is some kind

  353. of new doctrine

  354. to comfort you

  355. and maybe to burst

  356. your bubble

  357. a little bit,

  358. this is not anything

  359. new in scripture.

  360. Because first,

  361. any Hebrew familiar

  362. with their Old Testament

  363. would recognize

  364. the influence

  365. of the four horsemen

  366. from Zechariah 1

  367. and 6.

  368. And on top of that,

  369. more clearly,

  370. Jesus,

  371. when he was asked

  372. about the end times,

  373. signs of the end times,

  374. he remarkably

  375. spoke very similarly

  376. about war,

  377. famine,

  378. and death

  379. as things to expect.

  380. That's Matthew 24,

  381. and I encourage you

  382. to read that on your own

  383. because it's remarkable

  384. how close

  385. that chapter is,

  386. that discourse is

  387. with Revelation 6.

  388. Therefore,

  389. these four horsemen

  390. are just a recapitulation

  391. of Jesus'

  392. end time predictions.

  393. And it's helpful

  394. to see this connection

  395. to Matthew 24 as well

  396. because both Jesus

  397. and John,

  398. they give us clues

  399. that we're in the

  400. end times already.

  401. So how do we know that?

  402. So in Matthew 24,

  403. 14,

  404. Jesus clues us in

  405. that these signs

  406. of famine,

  407. of death,

  408. of war,

  409. of persecution,

  410. they come alongside

  411. with the evangelization

  412. of the entire world.

  413. That's the fulfillment

  414. of the Great Commission,

  415. right?

  416. And we know that

  417. that's happening today.

  418. The church,

  419. it's on its mission

  420. and we're evangelizing

  421. the entire world.

  422. So that means

  423. we're in the end times now.

  424. And as Sean explained

  425. last week too,

  426. the opening of these

  427. first six seals

  428. in our passage,

  429. they've been inaugurated

  430. by the death,

  431. the resurrection,

  432. and the ascension

  433. of Christ.

  434. So that means

  435. that these four horsemen,

  436. they're roaming

  437. the four corners

  438. of the earth today.

  439. And we've seen

  440. evidence of their work

  441. for centuries

  442. upon centuries.

  443. And as we see

  444. in the fifth seal

  445. and as we observe

  446. in our world today,

  447. the church of Christ

  448. is not immune

  449. to the tribulation

  450. of these four.

  451. Later in the chapter,

  452. we find a comparison,

  453. a juxtaposition

  454. between two groups

  455. of people

  456. in the fifth seal

  457. and in the sixth seal.

  458. In the fifth seal,

  459. we encounter

  460. dead Christian martyrs.

  461. But in the sixth seal,

  462. we witness

  463. the living earth dwellers.

  464. The Christian is dead,

  465. the wicked alive.

  466. Jesus himself predicts

  467. this too

  468. in Matthew 24 and 9.

  469. They will deliver you

  470. up to tribulation

  471. and put you,

  472. meaning his disciples,

  473. put you to death.

  474. And you will be hated

  475. by all the nations

  476. for my name's sake.

  477. While the general world

  478. is plagued

  479. and judged

  480. because the world

  481. is evil

  482. by these four,

  483. God is using them.

  484. Let us not forget

  485. the church

  486. is also not exempt

  487. from the suffering

  488. of the tribulation

  489. for better purposes.

  490. And we're gonna talk

  491. about that.

  492. A week before Christmas,

  493. I'm sure you didn't expect

  494. to hear a sermon like this,

  495. but I assure you

  496. that this isn't just

  497. gonna be doom and gloom,

  498. so let's turn to our text

  499. to find out.

  500. So in verses 1 to 2,

  501. a white horse

  502. with its rider

  503. equipped with a bow

  504. and crown

  505. is given temporary authority

  506. to conquer the world

  507. through spiritual deception

  508. and physical persecution.

  509. Now there are some

  510. who identify

  511. the rider,

  512. the identity of this rider

  513. to be Christ,

  514. mostly because

  515. he's riding on

  516. a white horse.

  517. And this is a strong allusion

  518. to Revelation 19.

  519. And Revelation 19,

  520. it's very clear,

  521. for this is Jesus

  522. who is called

  523. faithful and true.

  524. The word of God

  525. equipped with a sharp sword

  526. from his mouth

  527. comes out from heaven

  528. and conquers his enemies

  529. on what?

  530. On a white horse.

  531. While that allusion

  532. to the white horse

  533. is strong,

  534. the rider in our text today

  535. I believe isn't Christ,

  536. but is a satanic rider

  537. used by God

  538. for his purposes.

  539. There are a lot

  540. of different clues

  541. in our text,

  542. but I think

  543. the most convincing reason

  544. is that these four horsemen

  545. are clearly grouped together.

  546. There are clear literary parallels

  547. that we've already talked about

  548. between all four

  549. that are consistent,

  550. but it's also the grouping

  551. of the four living creatures

  552. that are calling

  553. the grouping

  554. of the four horsemen.

  555. And how demeaning

  556. it would be

  557. to group Christ

  558. with three other

  559. satanic horsemen.

  560. So this sheds light,

  561. I think,

  562. just on how crafty Satan is

  563. by the very fact

  564. that Christians

  565. can be confused

  566. by who this person is.

  567. Back to Matthew 24

  568. in Jesus' discourse,

  569. he warns us,

  570. see that nobody

  571. leads you astray.

  572. For many will come

  573. in my name saying,

  574. I am the Christ,

  575. and they will lead

  576. many astray.

  577. I don't think

  578. it's a coincidence

  579. that one of these horses

  580. is white

  581. for that exact reason.

  582. Therefore,

  583. I think this horseman

  584. is representative

  585. of messianic pretenders.

  586. There have been

  587. many heroes,

  588. world leaders

  589. engaged in conquest,

  590. promised utopia,

  591. at least a glorious kingdom,

  592. like Alexander the Great,

  593. Napoleon Bonaparte,

  594. Genghis Khan,

  595. Cyrus the Great,

  596. the list goes on and on.

  597. But these so-called

  598. great conquerors,

  599. they're just mere pawns.

  600. They're mere pawns.

  601. They're mere pawns

  602. in the hands

  603. of our sovereign Lord.

  604. So we need to hear

  605. the words of the Lord

  606. and see that nobody

  607. leads us astray.

  608. No matter how much power

  609. or influence

  610. or wealth

  611. they may have,

  612. there's only one

  613. sovereign Lord.

  614. That also means

  615. that we need

  616. not to be anxious

  617. about the current

  618. state of our worlds,

  619. and we don't have to

  620. take things

  621. into our own control.

  622. If rumors of wars

  623. and pandemics

  624. of nuclear weapons

  625. or terrorist attacks

  626. are swirling

  627. all around us,

  628. we need not to be anxious,

  629. brothers and sisters,

  630. because nothing falls

  631. out of the scope

  632. of our sovereign Lord.

  633. Next is a second seal

  634. with the blood red horse

  635. and its rider.

  636. Authority was given

  637. to him to take away

  638. peace from the earth,

  639. given his release

  640. onto the world

  641. and his theft of peace

  642. since Jesus' ascension.

  643. It's no wonder

  644. that there have been

  645. just war after war,

  646. upheaval after upheaval,

  647. genocide after genocide

  648. throughout history.

  649. Keeping peace

  650. is the most important task

  651. for the United Nations.

  652. And they reported

  653. just one year ago

  654. that globally

  655. we're facing

  656. the highest number

  657. of violent conflicts

  658. since 1945,

  659. which is World War II.

  660. and at least

  661. a quarter

  662. of the entire

  663. global population,

  664. that's two billion people,

  665. live in conflict-afflicted areas

  666. like Syria, Yemen,

  667. South Sudan,

  668. or Myanmar.

  669. And global military expenditures,

  670. it rose up to

  671. two trillion dollars

  672. in 2020.

  673. You see, war,

  674. conflict,

  675. death,

  676. these come with the times.

  677. And we need not

  678. to be surprised

  679. by the world around us.

  680. Even with the wars

  681. in Ukraine

  682. and in Palestine today,

  683. that's evidence

  684. of this horseman

  685. galloping around.

  686. We've seen him

  687. for centuries now.

  688. But all the while,

  689. brothers and sisters,

  690. I encourage you,

  691. don't forget the words

  692. of Paul

  693. in Ephesians 6, 12.

  694. He says this,

  695. for our struggle

  696. is not against flesh

  697. and blood,

  698. but against cosmic powers

  699. of the present darkness,

  700. against the spiritual forces

  701. of evil

  702. in the heavenly places.

  703. We are bombarded daily

  704. with news of conflict

  705. and war.

  706. And it's easy

  707. to lose sight

  708. of who our true enemy is.

  709. Our text today

  710. makes it clear

  711. that we fight each other

  712. because,

  713. because spiritual forces

  714. have stolen the peace.

  715. Our text says

  716. its rider was permitted

  717. to take peace

  718. so that,

  719. so that people

  720. should slay one another.

  721. So we mustn't forget

  722. our primary fight

  723. as Christians.

  724. It's not against

  725. our fellow man,

  726. even along ideological

  727. or partisan lines,

  728. but against a greater evil.

  729. And I ask you,

  730. if you are in conflict

  731. in your life

  732. with someone else today,

  733. there's no peace

  734. between you two.

  735. Who is your true enemy?

  736. Next,

  737. from the summons

  738. of the third living creature

  739. comes the rider

  740. on the black horse.

  741. He comes with a pair

  742. of scales in his hand.

  743. And I used to think

  744. that this was

  745. the prototypical scale

  746. of justice

  747. held high by Lady Justice.

  748. You guys are all familiar.

  749. But,

  750. actually,

  751. this scale

  752. is a symbol

  753. of scarcity

  754. and famine

  755. because when

  756. you're in famine,

  757. a scale is used

  758. to carefully

  759. measure out

  760. the ration portions

  761. of food.

  762. So that's exactly

  763. what the rider brings.

  764. It's a famine

  765. so severe

  766. it nearly breaks

  767. the economic system.

  768. And I'm definitely

  769. no expert

  770. in macroeconomics,

  771. but I know enough

  772. that the less supply

  773. that you have,

  774. the price of stuff

  775. just drives up,

  776. right?

  777. Because of the famine,

  778. a voice in the midst

  779. of the four living creature

  780. cries out

  781. a quart of wheat

  782. for a Daenerys

  783. and three quarts

  784. of barley

  785. for a Daenerys.

  786. Now,

  787. to make that

  788. a little bit more digestible,

  789. a Daenerys

  790. was around

  791. the price

  792. of one day's wage

  793. for a common laborer.

  794. And a quart of wheat

  795. is enough food

  796. to sustain

  797. one man

  798. for one day.

  799. So if you do the math,

  800. talk about

  801. living hand to mouth.

  802. If you had a family,

  803. then you likely

  804. had to turn

  805. to the cheaper stuff,

  806. the barley,

  807. which would then

  808. feed a couple mouths

  809. for one day,

  810. but still talk about

  811. living paycheck

  812. to paycheck.

  813. Historians say

  814. that this was

  815. about 10

  816. to 12 times

  817. the cost

  818. of normal food.

  819. That's like

  820. our dozen eggs

  821. costing 50 bucks.

  822. 50 bucks.

  823. If you know anything

  824. about me,

  825. if you know anything

  826. about, you know,

  827. our brother

  828. Josh Henderson

  829. over there,

  830. if you know

  831. how frugal we are,

  832. we would never

  833. touch an egg again.

  834. Yet still

  835. a voice

  836. from the midst

  837. of the four

  838. living creatures,

  839. who is Jesus?

  840. He's calling out,

  841. do not harm

  842. the oil

  843. and the wine.

  844. This honestly

  845. is a tough

  846. phrase to decipher,

  847. but I think

  848. the best interpretation

  849. is that agriculturally,

  850. the grapevine

  851. and the olive tree,

  852. they're more resistant

  853. to famine

  854. than barley

  855. or wheat.

  856. But I think

  857. the main point,

  858. the main idea

  859. is that Jesus

  860. is establishing

  861. a limitation

  862. on this famine.

  863. This horseman

  864. could do

  865. no more

  866. than the exact

  867. limitations

  868. that Jesus

  869. placed on him.

  870. Just as God

  871. says to the seas

  872. in Job 38,

  873. thus far

  874. you shall come

  875. and no further

  876. and here

  877. shall your proud

  878. ways be stayed.

  879. The apostle John,

  880. he tends

  881. to be cyclical

  882. in his writing

  883. and the book

  884. of Revelation

  885. is a really

  886. good example

  887. of that.

  888. First,

  889. we have

  890. the seven seals

  891. that steadily

  892. ramp up

  893. in the intensity

  894. and severity

  895. until the sixth seal

  896. which is the apex.

  897. It's the culmination.

  898. It's the judgment day.

  899. But later on,

  900. this same pattern

  901. is just recapitulated.

  902. It's repeated

  903. with the seven bulls

  904. and then the seven,

  905. or the seven trumpets

  906. and then the seven bulls.

  907. So,

  908. I think this pattern

  909. is much like

  910. a recurring

  911. intensifying theme,

  912. a musical theme

  913. in a movie soundtrack.

  914. Each time it's played,

  915. you recognize it.

  916. But as you progress

  917. on in the movie,

  918. it becomes

  919. more and more intense.

  920. Maybe it speeds up

  921. a little.

  922. Maybe more instruments

  923. are being added

  924. until it reaches

  925. its final climax.

  926. As we go on

  927. in Revelation,

  928. tune your ear

  929. just to hear

  930. how this theme

  931. is repeated

  932. but intensified

  933. because, frankly,

  934. this is just

  935. the first go-around.

  936. This is the tamest.

  937. There are limitations

  938. placed.

  939. Finally,

  940. we get to

  941. the fourth seal

  942. where a personified death,

  943. inseparable

  944. from his grim

  945. companion,

  946. Hades,

  947. mounts a pale

  948. green horse

  949. as a fitting

  950. color for death,

  951. I think,

  952. as the CSB

  953. translation

  954. rightly has it.

  955. And in the OT,

  956. in the Old Testament,

  957. Hades would be

  958. most closely

  959. aligned with

  960. Sheol,

  961. the idea of Sheol,

  962. the Hebrew

  963. understanding

  964. of the realm

  965. of the dead.

  966. The Lord

  967. then bestows

  968. upon these two

  969. the horrifying

  970. power to afflict

  971. the whole earth

  972. with sword,

  973. famine,

  974. pestilence,

  975. and wild beasts,

  976. summarizing,

  977. I think,

  978. all these first

  979. four seals.

  980. So these

  981. first four

  982. horsemen,

  983. they're meant

  984. to be taken

  985. together as a

  986. holistic unit,

  987. representing the

  988. suffering of the

  989. entire world

  990. of the times.

  991. just as the

  992. four living

  993. creatures,

  994. as we heard

  995. about in

  996. Revelation 4

  997. and 5,

  998. they symbolize

  999. the praise

  1000. of all

  1001. redeemed

  1002. creation.

  1003. But while

  1004. these four

  1005. horsemen are

  1006. given authority

  1007. over the

  1008. entire earth,

  1009. their power,

  1010. again,

  1011. is constrained

  1012. to put to

  1013. death only

  1014. one-fourth.

  1015. This isn't

  1016. meant to be

  1017. an exact number,

  1018. it's not meant

  1019. to be a

  1020. precise,

  1021. particular group

  1022. of people,

  1023. but this is

  1024. just a

  1025. qualitative measure

  1026. of understanding

  1027. how much power

  1028. has been given

  1029. to them.

  1030. If there are,

  1031. I don't know,

  1032. 60 of us

  1033. here today,

  1034. that's 15

  1035. people.

  1036. That's not

  1037. little power.

  1038. That's,

  1039. I'd consider

  1040. that a

  1041. decimation.

  1042. This,

  1043. frankly,

  1044. is a

  1045. frightening

  1046. passage.

  1047. It's a

  1048. hard passage,

  1049. especially

  1050. keeping in

  1051. mind that

  1052. many faithful

  1053. Christians

  1054. would be

  1055. the target

  1056. of these

  1057. afflictions.

  1058. Just imagine

  1059. what the

  1060. seven churches

  1061. in Asia Minor

  1062. would have

  1063. felt

  1064. reading this

  1065. letter.

  1066. Because remember,

  1067. Revelation,

  1068. it's a letter,

  1069. it's not an

  1070. end-time

  1071. encyclopedia.

  1072. But,

  1073. I think there's

  1074. a big but here,

  1075. the line of hope

  1076. is that while

  1077. we see evidence

  1078. of these

  1079. four horsemen

  1080. galloping around,

  1081. terrorizing the

  1082. earth,

  1083. the text

  1084. makes it

  1085. clear that

  1086. these belong

  1087. to God.

  1088. God is the

  1089. one who's

  1090. called them

  1091. to action.

  1092. God is the

  1093. one who's

  1094. put chains

  1095. around the

  1096. necks of

  1097. death and

  1098. Hades,

  1099. limiting how

  1100. far they can

  1101. go.

  1102. I want you to

  1103. look down with

  1104. me,

  1105. because I want

  1106. you to see

  1107. all these

  1108. divine passives

  1109. in the

  1110. scriptures for

  1111. yourselves.

  1112. A divine

  1113. passive is a

  1114. common literary

  1115. feature where a

  1116. verb is written

  1117. in the passive

  1118. form with the

  1119. implied doer of

  1120. said action as

  1121. God.

  1122. So see,

  1123. a crown was

  1124. given to him

  1125. in verse 2.

  1126. A rider was

  1127. permitted to

  1128. take peace,

  1129. and he was

  1130. given a sword

  1131. in verse 4,

  1132. and they were

  1133. given authority

  1134. over a fourth

  1135. of the earth

  1136. in verse 8.

  1137. Even for the

  1138. third seal,

  1139. you hear not

  1140. the voice of

  1141. just a living

  1142. creature,

  1143. but this is

  1144. the voice of

  1145. Jesus who

  1146. stands in the

  1147. midst of the

  1148. four living

  1149. creatures,

  1150. calling out the

  1151. limitations of

  1152. that famine.

  1153. And we know,

  1154. we know that

  1155. scripture is

  1156. absolutely clear.

  1157. God cannot

  1158. commit any

  1159. evil.

  1160. He is never

  1161. responsible for

  1162. any evil.

  1163. He tempts no

  1164. one, and he is

  1165. light without

  1166. any darkness.

  1167. But John makes

  1168. it clear that

  1169. this evil still

  1170. is under his

  1171. sovereignty and

  1172. control.

  1173. But why?

  1174. Why would

  1175. God authorize

  1176. such suffering

  1177. upon the

  1178. world, and

  1179. especially upon

  1180. his children

  1181. whom he loves?

  1182. Why do bad

  1183. things happen

  1184. to good people?

  1185. These are hard

  1186. questions, but we

  1187. can find our

  1188. answers in

  1189. scripture.

  1190. Well, first, I

  1191. think, I think it's

  1192. really important to

  1193. establish this.

  1194. The Bible does

  1195. affirm that bad

  1196. things happen to

  1197. good people.

  1198. people.

  1199. And thank God

  1200. it does.

  1201. That sounds

  1202. odd and sounds

  1203. hard, but hear

  1204. me out.

  1205. You're all

  1206. familiar with the

  1207. story of Job,

  1208. right?

  1209. Rich and

  1210. righteous Job, he

  1211. has everything

  1212. that he wants, but

  1213. because Satan was

  1214. permitted, right,

  1215. hear that sound

  1216. familiar, he was

  1217. permitted to

  1218. afflict Job and

  1219. take away

  1220. everything from

  1221. him in a short

  1222. span of time.

  1223. Job is

  1224. mourning, he's

  1225. lamenting, and

  1226. pretty much the

  1227. rest of the

  1228. book is Job

  1229. going back and

  1230. forth with his

  1231. three friends.

  1232. And while they're

  1233. arguing about Job's

  1234. circumstances, they're

  1235. actually agreeing upon

  1236. base presuppositions

  1237. that a just God

  1238. should treat people

  1239. with what they

  1240. deserve.

  1241. So therefore, his

  1242. friends, they come to

  1243. this conclusion that

  1244. Job must have done

  1245. absolutely something

  1246. horrifically wrong to

  1247. be able to deserve

  1248. this.

  1249. Whereas Job, his

  1250. response, he

  1251. maintains his

  1252. innocence and

  1253. demands a fair

  1254. trial before a

  1255. judge who

  1256. should be fair.

  1257. But then, at the

1258. end of the book, a

  1259. fourth friend, Elihu,

1260. he kind of pops out

  1261. really out of

  1262. nowhere, but he

  1263. gives this profound

  1264. answer that I think

  1265. is so important for

  1266. us to understand, that

1267. he says that God can

  1268. bring hard things, not

1269. as a direct result of

  1270. someone's actions, but

  1271. to ultimately save

  1272. them from sin.

  1273. This conclusion is

  1274. extremely important to

  1275. understand, because if

1276. we don't, then we end

  1277. up with a theological

  1278. system no different

  1279. than karma or even

  1280. the prosperity gospel.

1281. Every time we suffer, it's

  1282. because we would have

  1283. deserved it.

  1284. Every time we aren't

  1285. healthy or wealthy, it's

1286. because we didn't name it

1287. or claim it or we didn't

1288. give enough money to our

  1289. church.

1290. How painful is that truth

  1291. instead, when you suffer

  1292. loss, death, tragedy, it's

  1293. because the only right

  1294. theological conclusion is

  1295. that you deserved it.

1296. The book of Job flips all

1297. of that on its head.

1298. Good things can happen to

1299. good people, or bad things

1300. can happen to good people

  1301. for good reasons.

1302. And that's good news, because

1303. God can and does wield the

1304. tool of suffering for good.

1305. In the hands of our good

  1306. God, suffering is the

  1307. blaring microphone for those

  1308. who are slumbering in

  1309. contented worldliness, for

  1310. them to wake up.

  1311. Suffering is the glassy

  1312. mirror that reflects our

  1313. true spiritual makeup, warts

1314. and all, leading us to

  1315. repentance.

  1316. Suffering is the surgeon's

  1317. scalpel, cutting out heart

  1318. diseases of idolatry and

  1319. sin.

1320. Suffering is the great pride

1321. crusher, the loving rod of

  1322. discipline, steering us back

1323. onto the right path of

  1324. humility and righteousness.

  1325. Suffering is God's gymnasium,

1326. his classroom, where we learn

1327. probably more about God in

1328. that setting than in any

  1329. other in our lives.

1330. And there's one last good

  1331. that comes with suffering.

1332. We can experience just a

1333. taste, just a taste of how

1334. much Jesus, our Lord and

1335. Savior, suffered for our sin

  1336. on the cross.

  1337. This Advent season, we

  1338. remember that the infinite,

1339. the infinite God, he became

1340. an infant for our sake.

1341. He became the one not to be

  1342. served.

1343. He didn't come to be served, but

1344. to serve and to give his life

1345. as a ransom for many.

1346. And for as much as we suffer,

1347. we will never know how much it

1348. cost for Jesus to bear all our

1349. sin, bear all the wrath of the

  1350. Father on him.

1351. And while terrible things can

  1352. happen to righteous Christians,

1353. we can trust that we are not

  1354. alone.

1355. Jesus can empathize with us.

1356. That's why the late pastor

1357. Tim Keller explains God takes

1358. our misery, our suffering, so

1359. seriously that he is willing to

  1360. take it on himself.

1361. And for those who suffer in this

1362. life and they pattern their lives

1363. after Christ, the sovereign Lord

1364. bestows upon them rest in the

1365. next life as we encounter the

  1366. fifth seal.

1367. So moving on to the fifth seal,

1368. when in verses 9 to 11, we get a

  1369. break in the pattern.

1370. So no more evil horses, thank God.

1371. But instead, we are transported

1372. back to the heavenly realm.

1373. And here we see the souls who have

1374. been slain for the word of God and

1375. for the witness they had borne.

1376. Because Christians don't play by the

1377. rules of the world, because we

1378. refuse to scheme and bribe and

1379. cheat and battle our way to victory,

1380. because we turn the other cheek,

1381. because we trust that God will

1382. uphold justice so that we don't

  1383. have to.

1384. Because we have conformed our lives

1385. to the slain lamb in life and

1386. death, we have suffered between the

  1387. two advents of Christ.

1388. And their blood was spilt upon the

  1389. heavenly altar of God.

1390. Even the great apostle Paul saw his

1391. own death similarly, like a drink

1392. offering to be poured out.

1393. And while they are in the Sabbath rest

1394. of God, this rest is not fully

  1395. consummated.

1396. I think it's clear in our text, but

1397. John hints that he uses a specific

  1398. word, souls.

  1399. He says souls, they're not, they're

1400. still waiting for their final glorified

  1401. body.

1402. But even more clearly, they're still

1403. waiting for God to judge and avenge

1404. their blood on those who dwell on the

  1405. earth.

1406. But again, notice God's awesome

  1407. response to their plea.

  1408. He's not a military general that's

1409. freaking out in his camp, wondering,

1410. am I losing too many men?

1411. Am I going to lose this battle?

1412. But his answer shows that he is in

1413. complete control of the situation.

1414. He is, after all, what they call and

  1415. know him to be.

1416. He is the sovereign Lord, holy and true.

1417. So he gives them white robes, symbolizing

1418. purity and blessedness, and he tells

1419. them to rest a little longer.

1420. Rest a little longer because their

1421. number is still yet completed.

1422. Under the reign of Nero, Domitian,

1423. Shapur II, Adolf Hitler, Stalin, Kim

1424. Irsung, Mao Zedong, Fidel Castro, Boko

1425. Haram, God is sovereign over the millions

1426. and millions of saints' lives throughout

1427. history that are to be added to their

  1428. number.

1429. More and more are joining in this choir,

1430. even to this very own day.

1431. How long before you will judge and avenge

1432. our blood on those dwelling on the

  1433. earth?

1434. When you hear this, I understand if you

1435. might feel a little uneasy about this

1436. prayer because it sounds like something a

  1437. Christian shouldn't say.

1438. After all, this seems like the polar

1439. opposite of Jesus and Stephen's request

  1440. before they were martyred.

1441. Forgive them for they know not what they

  1442. do.

1443. But as faithful students of Scripture, as

1444. we all are in this church, we must be

1445. careful not to absolute ties, either

1446. response of forgiveness only or justice

1447. only when we experience injustice.

1448. We find both responses in Scripture and

1449. both can be appropriate means of glorifying

  1450. God.

1451. Now, this isn't the case for everyone, but

1452. I wonder if our main objection to this, please,

1453. it's ultimately because we have a small view of

1454. God and his glory and we have a large view of

1455. people, even those who hate God.

1456. We uphold the value of our fellow man, which is a

1457. good Christian impulse, but it should never be

1458. done at the expense of God's glory.

1459. Our world, we've lost our nose.

1460. We've lost the ability to smell how foul sin is

1461. because we've just gotten so accustomed to living in

  1462. it.

1463. That's why David rhetorically asks in Psalm 138,

1464. do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord?

1465. And to an appropriate degree, do we have righteous

1466. anger to preserve the glory of our Lord?

1467. And moreover, in defense of these saints, the reality is

1468. that the majority, the vast majority of martyrs to this

1469. day are voiceless and their murders are done in secret.

1470. So many, millions upon these killings don't make the

  1471. headlines.

1472. We don't know anything about them.

1473. And that's precisely the reason why Richard Wurmbrandt, a

1474. Lutheran priest in the 1940s, he would go on to find the

1475. organization, The Voice of the Martyrs.

  1476. I'm sure you've heard of it.

1477. It's an organization that lives up to its name and gives a

  1478. voice to the voiceless.

1479. In his book, Tortured for Christ, he goes on to write this.

1480. I tremble because of the sufferings of those persecuted in

  1481. different lands.

1482. I tremble thinking about the eternal destiny of their

  1483. torturers.

1484. I tremble for Western Christians who don't help their

  1485. persecuted brethren.

1486. In the depth of my heart, I would like to keep the beauty of my

1487. own vineyard and not to be involved in such a huge fight.

1488. I would like to so much to be somewhere in quietness and rest, but

  1489. it is not possible.

1490. The quietness and rest for which I long would be an escape from

1491. reality and dangerous for my soul.

1492. The West sleeps and must be awakened to see the plight of the

  1493. captive nations.

1494. So church, we shouldn't stifle the questions of how long, oh Lord, but

1495. we should join in on this pleading with righteous anger, an anger that's

1496. not primarily motivated by personal revenge, but an anger defending God's

  1497. glory.

1498. So we must ask how long, oh Lord, will our brothers and sisters in

  1499. this world suffer?

  1500. We can't bear.

1501. We can't bear to see it anymore.

1502. We want you to come.

1503. We want you to come, oh Lord, and make all that is wrong right.

1504. This Advent season, as we remember the first coming of Christ, we must also

1505. remember to wait for his coming.

1506. When his name will finally stop being besmirched.

1507. His glory will fully be known.

1508. His enemies crushed under his feet and the slain will rise to reign.

1509. And when we pray like that, we don't pray as if we don't know what's going to

  1510. happen.

1511. We know what's going to happen.

1512. God is, but God is going to answer.

1513. This suffering and these deaths are never meaningless because they are, they're

1514. gas, they're gasoline to spark the advancement of God's kingdom, just like

  1515. Christ's suffering was.

1516. And these deaths are victories.

  1517. They're never losses.

1518. And that's why we can and we must endure the suffering of this tribulation because

1519. God is sovereignly using all of it to launch into the sixth seal to bring about his

1520. kingdom, the consummation of his kingdom.

1521. Finally, the lamb opens up the sixth seal.

1522. And you could tell that things are really ramping up here.

1523. Once the seal is opened, there is a great earthquake.

1524. Sun turns black, moon turns red, falls, the stars fall to the earth when overripe, like

  1525. overripe figs when shaken.

1526. And these signs are all taken from a smattering of different places in scripture, but really

1527. all of them are signaling to you something on the cosmic, on the earth shattering, sky

1528. splitting level is about to happen.

1529. These are all clear signs in the Bible that the foretold day of the Lord has come.

1530. An answer to, this is an answer to the martyr's prayer.

1531. Those who killed and abused Christians will await their final judgment that day.

1532. And while John does include everyone, including the poor, the majority of these descriptors

1533. in our text, they're the high and the mighty.

1534. He says they're kings, great ones, generals, rich and powerful, yet they will find out that

1535. final day that they are poor, they're weak, and they're naked.

1536. When I was a kid in high school, in my idolatry to try to prove myself by my grades, there was

1537. a situation that I decided that I needed to cheat on one of my exams.

1538. It was a history exam.

1539. And so what I decided to do, and thought this was a really smart plan at that point, but

1540. I wrote all the information on a little cheat sheet.

1541. It was like a little cheat sheet this big, but I quickly found out that there was a lot

1542. of information on the test, and so I had to write it super, super small, probably like

1543. font size two or three.

1544. And so I realized I could only read it when I was like holding it up like this, but I

1545. didn't take that into account when I was actually taking my exam.

1546. I needed a place to hide it, right?

1547. So I was just sitting there, and I decided to put this little cheat sheet in between my legs.

1548. And so at that distance, I couldn't read a single thing that I wrote.

1549. And so it was for, I don't know, a good 10 minutes.

1550. I was just staring in between my legs, not writing anything.

1551. And so I decided to abandon that plan, ditch plan A, go to plan B, which I whipped out my

1552. iPod Touch, which maybe you guys remember those.

1553. And I thought that I could furiously type it into Google, all the information that I needed.

1554. So I also decided to put that in between my legs.

1555. So I was just sitting there, looking in between my legs, trying to furiously type and look

  1556. up things.

1557. Anyone could tell that I was acting super strangely.

1558. And so it didn't take long for my professor to ask me, Ed, what are you doing?

  1559. What are you doing?

1560. And I looked up after looking in between my legs for like a good 20 minutes, and I saw

1561. everybody in the classroom staring at me.

1562. Every single person was looking at me, and he confiscated my device, my little cheat sheet,

1563. and he told me to meet me after class.

1564. And I felt, that's probably the most, the moment in my life where I felt the most exposed,

1565. the most naked I've ever felt.

  1566. I wanted to hide.

  1567. I wanted to run.

1568. But I just had to sit there waiting for these kids to finish their exam.

1569. But that was just a high school exam.

  1570. That's just a high school exam.

1571. How can you imagine just how naked and exposed these people feel on that day of the Lord?

1572. I want you to hear the absolute fear in their voices when they cry, fall on us, hide us.

  1573. What do we do?

  1574. Where can we run?

1575. Who can stand on this day?

1576. But the earth dwellers in verse 17, they're right.

  1577. Who can stand?

1578. For we were all part of this adulterous and sinful generation.

1579. No one can stand before God that day, not from their own obedience.

1580. When we have suffered, we have all turned to our own ways to cope.

1581. We have turned to substances, sexual sin, food, self-reliance, relationships, money,

1582. and a plethora of other idols just to cope with the suffering of this world.

1583. We did not submit nor trust the sovereignty of our God.

1584. We have even accused God of evil and blamed him and hated him.

  1585. But there is one.

1586. There is one who did submit perfectly.

1587. There is one who submitted to his father's plan, even when it cost him everything.

1588. And it's only by Jesus' perfect submission to death on a cross that we could stand on that day.

1589. Only because of Jesus' obedience do we observe the great reversal of fate between those two groups that I mentioned earlier,

1590. between the Christian martyr and the earth dweller.

1591. Before, we noticed that the Christian martyr was dead, but the earth dweller was alive.

1592. But now it's all upside down.

1593. It's the faithful martyr at rest.

1594. But the earth dweller in complete panic and fear.

1595. The wicked plead for the mountains to cover them,

1596. but the Christian rests secure that they are covered by the perfect righteousness of Christ.

  1597. The Christian is justified.

  1598. The wicked receive wrath.

1599. The wrath of the Lamb for eternal punishment in hell.

1600. And on that final day, what we knew of the power and the sovereignty of the Lord,

1601. only by faith and not by sight,

1602. it'll all be fully revealed for the whole world to see and tremble.

1603. Therefore, today, with the four horsemen wreaking havoc on this world and discouraging Christians,

1604. brothers and sisters, I urge you, I plead with you,

  1605. hold the line.

  1606. Keep the faith.

  1607. Fight the good fight.

1608. Trust in the good plan of our Lord by remembering that God is sovereign over the totality of our lives now,

1609. and he is sovereign over the rest that you will receive in the next.

1610. Richard Wurmbrandt and his wife Sabina, they're faithful examples of this.

1611. Again, in his book, Richard writes back in 1945, when the Soviet Union was still around.

  1612. It took over Romania.

  1613. This is Richard's country.

1614. And the leaders of the Union forced Christian leaders to all gather together.

1615. And they forced them to hail the atheistic state and pledge their allegiance to the Soviet Union.

1616. And Richard and Sabina, his wife, they attended and they witnessed one church leader after another compromise their faith.

1617. So, Sabina, being the faithful helper that she is, she whispered to her husband,

  1618. Richard, stand up.

1619. Wash away the shame from the face of Christ.

1620. They're spitting in his face.

1621. And he replied, if I do so,

  1622. you lose your husband.

1623. And she faithfully and boldly said,

  1624. I don't wish to have a coward for a husband.

1625. Now, with a wife like Sabina, no wonder he obeyed God.

1626. But it's also because he trusted, Richard trusted,

1627. that God is in control of everything.

1628. God would never leave him.

1629. So he bravely stood up in front of 4,000 delegates

1630. and declared that the church must glorify God in Christ alone.

1631. And he would go on to pay the price for that.

1632. He was kidnapped by the secret police.

1633. He was thrown into a sensory deprived jail for three years.

1634. That means no light, no sound.

1635. The prisoner guards, they even wore felt on the bottom of their boots

1636. so that they wouldn't make any sounds.

1637. But he lived to tell the tale.

1638. He survived the jail time and he claimed that it was worth it.

1639. Richard and Sabina are faithful examples of those

1640. who trusted in God with their lives

1641. and that spurred them on to obedience,

  1642. even through suffering.

1643. While not all of us are going to be martyrs

  1644. and suffer physical persecution,

1645. we are all called to have the same spirit of endurance,

  1646. of perseverance, and self-sacrifice.

1647. Again, we can only do this by trusting that God is with us now

1648. and will give us rest for the future.

1649. Remember, when you feel like you're losing in life

1650. because of your faith, you are not.

1651. But your devotion to Christ is a humble investment that explodes,

1652. that'll explode on its return.

1653. There's no better investment in your life

1654. more than a graduate degree,

  1655. more than a relationship,

  1656. more than a house,

1657. more than your own health.

1658. If you think that you're losing

1659. because your friends think you're weird

  1660. because of your faith,

  1661. because you tithe

1662. so you can't save up money as quickly,

1663. because you faithfully support your family

  1664. and give up opportunities

1665. to launch into a lucrative and successful career,

1666. because you speak up to defend Christ

  1667. and the Christian faith,

1668. because you give up your own life.

  1669. Fear not.

1670. Because God has promised that the last will be first.

1671. He never reneges on his promises.

1672. When we go through tragedy and suffering,

1673. and I know that some of you guys

1674. are going through really hard things right now.

1675. We wrestle with God by learning the language of lamentation

1676. as these saints had done

1677. and which we learned not too long ago

  1678. from this very pulpit.

1679. We invite brothers and sisters into our lives,

  1680. into our pain,

1681. and we pray and we weep with them.

1682. And we do ultimately what Nick did

  1683. by interpreting our suffering

1684. through the lens and the truths of scripture,

1685. seeing that God is still sovereign for our good.

1686. Finally, let me close with a plea.

1687. This tension of waiting for God's deliverance

  1688. can be extremely long.

1689. And I know that it feels long for a lot of you.

1690. So why is he seeming to wait so long?

1691. If you turn to 2 Peter 3,

  1692. he tells us,

1693. Peter tells us in verse 9,

1694. the Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise

  1695. as some count slowness,

1696. but is patient towards you,

1697. not wishing that any should perish,

1698. but that all should reach repentance.

1699. Now, if you are here today

1700. and you haven't put your faith in Christ,

  1701. the message is clear.

1702. God is waiting for you.

  1703. The Lord's patience endures

  1704. because of amazing grace,

1705. even when his glorious name

  1706. is temporary defiled,

  1707. which, by the way,

1708. he hates far more than any of us could,

1709. but he wants all sinners

1710. to come and find life in him.

1711. The reality is the opportunity

1712. to repent will not always be here.

1713. We do not know when this day will come.

1714. Today is the day to come

1715. and put your faith in him.

1716. God is waiting for you.

  1717. Let's pray.

  1718. God, we thank you.

  1719. We thank you.

1720. We thank you for the grace

  1721. of our Lord Jesus

1722. because we know that we do not

1723. deserve to stand on that day.

  1724. Thank you, Lord Jesus,

  1725. for the perfect obedience

1726. that you endured temptations from Satan

1727. for the joy that was set before you,

  1728. despising the shame.

1729. You died a death you did not deserve.

  1730. Thank you, God,

1731. in that you display your sovereignty

1732. and using all the bad in our lives

1733. to use it for good.

1734. Help us to see that.

1735. Whatever is going on in our lives,

  1736. each one of us,

1737. speak to us and help us to see

1738. that this is truly for your glory

  1739. and for our good.

1740. Help us to see this, Lord.

1741. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1742. Amen.
