  1. Lord in prayer as we come to this

  2. portion of his word. Father, we thank

  3. you for the those that have stayed with

  4. us for a long journey

  5. through a long book of the Bible.

  6. And we ask your blessing on this class

  7. and blessing on our efforts to hear you

  8. uh not just for what happened long ago

  9. but for what needs to happen now in the

  10. lives of those around us and in our own

  11. lives.

  12. Jesus name. Amen.

  13. Jeremiah 26.

  14. This particular chapter of Jeremiah

  15. is very significant

  16. for a few reasons.

  17. Number one,

  18. when we come when we will have finished

  19. chapter 26, we will be at the halfway

  20. point to a very large book of the Bible.

  21. I have taught through this book before

  22. all the way through. And I really didn't

  23. intend to do it this this time, but it

  24. just worked out that way. We just kept

  25. going, kept going. And we are halfway

  26. through the 52 chapters

  27. of Jeremiah.

  28. And if you've been with us, that's quite

  29. an accomplishment to

  30. see a book of the Bible this large and

  31. see it in its context

  32. and to just think about after tonight,

  33. we'll be halfway through. Now I know the

  34. chapter divisions are man-made

  35. but approximately we will be halfway

  36. through

  37. whenever I'm privileged to be on an

  38. airplane overnight or those those kind

  39. of flights are especially challenging.

  40. Uh they've got movies to watch on the

  41. little screen. They've got uh games to

  42. play,

  43. but it and I've tried to wa once in a

  44. while I'll watch an old movie or play a

  45. game.

  46. But basically, I don't really care for

  47. that. I just like to watch where the

  48. plane is and where it's going. That's

  49. what I do all night. Okay. And uh it

  50. always goes slower than I think it

  51. should go, but I I I tend to watch it.

  52. It's always a significant moment in the

  53. middle of the night when you know I'm

  54. halfway where I'm going a halfway.

  55. It's all you know we've crossed that

  56. halfway point and that's what we've done

  57. with this book

  58. and I'm thankful for those that made the

  59. journey with us and I trust that this

  60. particular chapter will be a great

  61. blessing.

  62. Now a second reason this is significant

  63. is

  64. that chapter 26

  65. refers back to chapter 7

  66. and a message that was preached then

  67. the famous temple sermon.

  68. And this is not just a recopying of

  69. everything of that sermon. You'd have to

  70. go back to chapter 7 and see all of that

  71. to get to get through this.

  72. But here the emphasis is not on the

  73. sermon itself, but on the reaction

  74. to the sermon.

  75. Uh, and we're going backwards in

  76. chronology. We're slipping back uh a

  77. little bit to pick up this. And so the

  78. book is flashing back and referring to

  79. that temple court sermon and referring

  80. to the problems that result from

  81. Jeremiah's preaching.

  82. They didn't they didn't like it then.

  83. They don't like it. They didn't haven't

  84. like it since.

  85. And we're going back to 609 BC.

  86. We're going back to three months before

  87. King Josiah

  88. to be killed and his successor deported

  89. and Jehoachin on the on the throne.

  90. Now what's going to happen here? A third

  91. thing

  92. is that Jeremiah is almost going to lose

  93. his life.

  94. He comes very close to losing his life.

  95. People are calling for his death.

  96. Now, I preached some sermons people

  97. didn't like, and I'm not sure anyone's

  98. ever said, "Let's drag him out and

  99. execute him." But, uh, there is this is

  100. basically what's going on here.

  101. And the emphasis here in chapter 26, it

  102. gives a a very brief synopsis of the

  103. sermon, but it spends its time on the

  104. reaction

  105. to the sermon.

  106. You know, the sermon's not done when the

  107. preacher stops.

  108. What do you do with it? What do the

  109. hearers do with it?

  110. We don't want to be like the people in

  111. Isaiah. You got ears but you don't hear.

  112. And so uh here is a interesting section

  113. of scripture.

  114. The react it emphasizes the reaction to

  115. the sermon.

  116. Now sometimes I thought I did a good

  117. job. That was a good sermon and people

  118. are very mad. Sometimes somebody very

  119. upset. Other times I thought I messed up

  120. on that and God used it. So the preacher

  121. is not really a good judge of his own

  122. messages.

  123. Uh and but we certainly don't want to we

  124. don't want to be the kind of people that

  125. always want to have a pleasing message

  126. that's acceptable to fallen men. Men

  127. love darkness rather than light because

  128. their deeds are evil.

  129. They won't come to the light that their

  130. deeds be reproved. Right? And a good

  131. sermon is going to shine the light in

  132. the darkness.

  133. And uh like roaches, they they prefer

  134. the dark.

  135. And uh so this is the picture here. And

  136. it's an important picture

  137. and there's so many good lessons from

  138. it. I I it's it's hard to know where to

  139. spend your time. But anyway, let's get

  140. started. You will probably remember some

  141. of the

  142. you sections from the pre his previous

  143. the previous section of

  144. in chapter 7 of the temple sermon.

  145. In the beginning of the reign of

  146. Jehookim, the son of Josiah, king of

  147. Judah, came this word from the Lord,

  148. saying, "Thus says the Lord, stand in

  149. the court of the Lord's house, and speak

  150. unto all the cities of Judah, which come

  151. to worship in the Lord's house, all the

  152. words that I command thee, to speak to

  153. them, diminish not a word."

  154. We're going to go back to that one.

  155. diminish.

  156. Not a word. I'm reading from the King

  157. James.

  158. In other words, don't trim the sermon.

  159. Don't chickenen out.

  160. Deliver it as it's given to you.

  161. And when he says diminish not a word,

  162. he's not talking about cutting the sh

  163. sermon shorter

  164. uh just because of time's sake.

  165. He's talking about the temptation

  166. for every prophet or every preacher

  167. to soften the message or dilute the

  168. message or simply chicken out and not

  169. give all the message

  170. that God has wanted you to give.

  171. responding to the hostility

  172. in the crowd and the faces on the people

  173. you're preaching to and wanting to trim

  174. the sermon.

  175. And we're going to get to that. This

  176. diminish not a word is the same word of

  177. cutting a beard. You're trimming your

  178. beard.

  179. So he says, "Don't trim the sermon down.

  180. Don't shave the sermon.

  181. whatever I tell you, that's what you

  182. that's but you got to pass that on all

  183. of it.

  184. And so God said that

  185. because God knew

  186. that what he was telling him to say was

  187. going to be hard for him to say.

  188. Christians sometimes have to do this.

  189. Pastors sometimes have to do this.

  190. Fathers have to sometimes do this.

  191. Mothers have to do this. You've got to

  192. speak to people you love

  193. in a way

  194. that doesn't avoid

  195. a hard truth that they don't want to

  196. hear.

  197. And so that's what this is all about.

  198. And Jeremiah has his instructions.

  199. Diminish not over.

  200. If so be they will hearken and turn

  201. every man from his evil way, that I may

  202. repent of the evil which I purposed to

  203. do to them because of the evil of their

  204. doings.

  205. This verse talks about God repenting.

  206. That's a shock.

  207. And so it it doesn't mean God's doing a

  208. bad thing here. The word evil means a

  209. calamity, a judgment that's coming on

  210. that God's basically saying, "If they

  211. listen to this sermon and they repent

  212. and they hear what I've say,

  213. I'm going to hold off

  214. on what I'm planning to do."

  215. So, this was a serious moment.

  216. It was a very serious moment.

  217. And thou shalt say to them, thus says

  218. the Lord,

  219. if ye will not hearken to me to walk in

  220. my law, which I've set before you, to

  221. hearken to the words of my servants, the

  222. prophets whom I sent to you, both rising

  223. up early and sending them, but you've

  224. not hearkened.

  225. The word hearken means to listen or to

  226. hear.

  227. I've sent him, but you're not hearing

  228. it.

  229. Everybody Everybody hearing my voice has

  230. maybe been in this situation many times

  231. with someone. It's not necessarily a

  232. spiritual situation. It's whatever kind

  233. of situation. Somebody's mind is made up

  234. to do something or to look at something

  235. a certain way. It may be political. It

  236. may be financial. It may be uh

  237. relational. They've got a plan and

  238. they're they're married to their plan

  239. and you come in and try to warn them.

  240. You try to encourage them. You try to

  241. slow them up. You try to uh deal with

  242. them about this, but they're not hearing

  243. it.

  244. You've already made their minds up.

  245. So, they're not really listening to

  246. listen.

  247. They're hearing your words.

  248. They know what you're saying,

  249. but they're past the point of wanting to

  250. have you talk to them about anything.

  251. Don't confuse me with the facts. My

  252. mind's made up.

  253. That that kind of thing.

  254. And so

  255. uh what what God is saying in verse

  256. four, thou shalt say to them, thus says

  257. the Lord, if you will not hearken to me

  258. to walk in the law which I've set before

  259. you to hearken or to listen to the words

  260. of my servants, the prophets whom I sent

  261. to you, both rising up early, sending

  262. them but you have not hearkened. So

  263. God's referring back to a long line of

  264. prophets

  265. of which Jeremiah is just the latest uh

  266. one.

  267. So you listen or you don't. If you don't

  268. learn the easy way by listening, you'll

  269. learn the hard way.

  270. And God says in verse six, "Then will I

  271. make this house, that's the temple, like

  272. Shiloh."

  273. Shiloh is where the tabernacle was

  274. that was no longer in service

  275. because God's referring back to the fact

  276. that, you know, when the Jews came out

  277. of Egypt, the first center of worship

  278. was Shiloh.

  279. And God put judgment on that because

  280. they weren't listening.

  281. Then I'll make this house like Shiloh.

  282. On this house I'll make this temple like

  283. Shiloh. And I'll make this city a curse

  284. all the nations of the earth. A city

  285. that's supposed to be a blessing to all

  286. the nations of the earth. I will make a

  287. curse to all the nations of the earth.

  288. That's a sermon.

  289. Now, one of the problems with theocracy,

  290. and the Old Testament did have a

  291. theocracy, Old Testament theocracy

  292. is that patriotism

  293. gets mixed in with spiritual things.

  294. Right?

  295. So, in America, we have a separation of

  296. church and state for a reason. because

  297. in a fallen world

  298. uh government and spiritual things uh

  299. get very complicated.

  300. And so God made it very clear what he's

  301. going to do.

  302. And uh he made it very clear why he's

  303. going to do it.

  304. And so in verse seven, so the priests,

  305. where were they centered at? Jerusalem

  306. primarily. And the prophets, where were

  307. they? Jerusalem

  308. and all the people heard Jeremiah

  309. speaking these words in the house of the

  310. Lord.

  311. So basically in their minds Jeremiah is

  312. an intruder. Who are you to come in here

  313. and say what you're saying?

  314. That's exactly the u situation Jesus was

  315. in when he went in and cleaned up the

  316. temple.

  317. Who do you think you are?

  318. This is our place.

  319. Who are you to say we're doing wrong?

  320. And so that's what's going on.

  321. So basically, we have in these verses a

  322. a a repetition of the sermon of chapter

  323. 7.

  324. And but then the big emphasis in this

  325. chapter is not the sermon itself. we see

  326. back in chapter seven, but in the

  327. reaction to the truth of the sermon,

  328. which was not a good reaction.

  329. I get allergy shots. I had three of them

  330. this morning. And I have to sit there

  331. for a half hour to see if there's a

  332. reaction.

  333. And there's a little one. I got a little

  334. itching here in this arm. I got some

  335. itching in this arm. But that's pretty

  336. mild. But there's not enough for them to

  337. give the shot. They want to monitor

  338. whatever reaction is to that shot. And

  339. fortunately, the shots are working. I'm

  340. I am feeling much better.

  341. Not perfect, but much much better.

  342. So Jeremiah Jeremiah has the sermon,

  343. but the sermon is one thing. Uh the

  344. reaction to the sermon is a another

  345. thing.

  346. And it's that reaction that we're going

  347. to emphasize in the rest of the chapter.

  348. So we have the sermon, a reference to

  349. the sermon. We know more what that is if

  350. you go back and read chapter 7

  351. and then we have this reaction to the

  352. sermon.

  353. Now again, we're halfway through the

  354. book.

  355. And my original purpose in going through

  356. the book was at least to just touch on

  357. some things until we got to chapter 31

  358. because that's the great new covenant

  359. chapter

  360. and that has that has effects at the end

  361. of history for the Jewish people. The

  362. old covenant didn't work. You're too

  363. sinful. You can't cut it. So we have a

  364. new covenant.

  365. And so in that new covenant as a basis,

  366. we share in the new covenant because of

  367. our relationship to Jesus Christ who

  368. inaugurated it. We share in it ahead of

  369. time even though we're Gentiles mostly.

  370. And we call it the new testament.

  371. This is the blood of the New Testament

  372. in my blood.

  373. And so what is what is going on here is

  374. very very important

  375. uh to us in the church age. It will be

  376. going on in chapter 31 which we'll be

  377. getting to fairly soon if the Lord

  378. carries. It's also important to Israel

  379. because basically they couldn't keep the

  380. old covenant. They needed God to do a

  381. heart work,

  382. put the law in their heart.

  383. And so all of that is involved here.

  384. So let's get started and let's start

  385. gleaning some lessons from this chapter

  386. and hopefully we'll take some things

  387. home with us besides the the big

  388. picture.

  389. Number one,

  390. the importance of teaching

  391. the whole wh

  392. word of God.

  393. Many churches are clipping the beard.

  394. They avoid things that are

  395. controversial.

  396. They avoid things that are going to

  397. upset people.

  398. And basically here it says don't trim

  399. the message. Don't do it.

  400. Warren Wesby said false prophets

  401. preached what the people wanted to hear.

  402. Jeremiah preached what they needed to

  403. hear.

  404. It's good, isn't it?

  405. And we need the whole council of God.

  406. The Apostle Paul will say in Acts 20,

  407. "I'm free from the blood of all men, for

  408. I've not shunned, declare to you the

  409. whole council of God."

  410. So the Apostle Paul in his time with the

  411. Ephesians did not

  412. he didn't trim the beard of the message.

  413. He didn't cut it short. not going to

  414. teach on that. They might get mad. They

  415. might get upset. He taught it all.

  416. He taught it all in the time he was

  417. there.

  418. And so,

  419. uh, doesn't Jesus say, "Teaching them to

  420. observe all things, whatever I've

  421. commanded you." Well, you can't teach

  422. others all things if you don't know the

  423. all things.

  424. Nobody's got to teach you the all things

  425. for you to teach the all things. We're

  426. responsible to disciple people and give

  427. them the whole council of God. But if we

  428. don't know the whole council of God, we

  429. can't pass on what we don't have.

  430. Pastor Oball's famous statement, and

  431. I've passed it on before, he uh was

  432. going off for the Brill Cream commercial

  433. in the 50s where they'd sing the song

  434. Brill Cream, a little dab will do you.

  435. And that's exactly what some preachers

  436. uh a little dab will do you. We're not

  437. going to really get too serious about

  438. teaching the whole council of God,

  439. especially the harder things where

  440. Christians disagree on and maybe get

  441. their feathers ruffled.

  442. We won't do that.

  443. We won't teach on the more difficult

  444. things like predestination

  445. or security of the believer or

  446. different views of prophecy or

  447. all there's all kinds of ores in there.

  448. There's a lot of stuff. There's a long

  449. list that you can get a crowd of people

  450. that might disagree on this that and the

  451. other thing. So you tiptoe around

  452. anything that's going to make somebody

  453. upset and you just teach where things

  454. everybody's going to agree on. That's

  455. not biblical. That's not a good thing.

  456. It's not a good church. Sorry. It's not.

  457. If you got to grow a church that way,

  458. you are not growing it a biblical way.

  459. You gota you got to be willing as a

  460. pastor and may it be true for whoever

  461. follows me of Jesus terries. You got to

  462. be willing to lose people as well as get

  463. people.

  464. You got to be willing to upset people as

  465. well as bless people.

  466. The word of God cuts. It's a double.

  467. It's a two-edged sword. Ephesians chap

  468. Ephesians Hebrews 4:12.

    Hebrews 4:12

  469. And so we have to let that process

  470. go. And Jeremiah is attacked

  471. in the temple

  472. because of his refusal

  473. to trim the message.

  474. God told him not to trim it. He didn't

  475. trim it.

  476. And uh

  477. Jeremiah's message was an offensive

  478. attack on the temple crowd

  479. who'd been listening to false teachers.

  480. It's awfully hard when you've been

  481. indoctrinated by false teaching to hear

  482. the truth.

  483. false teaching uh false teaching

  484. vaccinates you

  485. to keep you from hearing the truth.

  486. It doesn't the truth doesn't sound like

  487. the truth anymore. You're listening to

  488. this cultist, that cultist, or this

  489. crazy liberal person or that other kind

  490. of false teacher and

  491. you you you've got the other things in

  492. your head and it's hard to cut that out.

  493. It's a self delusion.

  494. Now, the false theology that preceded

  495. Jeremiah, and you got to know what that

  496. is, the false teachers were saying,

  497. "This city's never going to get

  498. destroyed. This is God's city. This

  499. temple's never going to get destroyed.

  500. This is God's temple."

  501. Who do you That's this. And so in their

  502. minds, the false teachers minds, they

  503. were giving people a false security.

  504. And the false prophets

  505. proclaimed and encouraged a false

  506. security. It's a false theology that

  507. produced a false confidence.

  508. Now, anybody that studied history

  509. knows about the the Mageno line in

  510. France. Anybody

  511. remember what that was all about?

  512. >> Yeah, I'm probably mispronouncing the

  513. word because my friend I've had one year

  514. high school friends and I really blew

  515. that.

  516. >> Yeah, whatever it is. But it was a line

  517. of fortifications, stone fortifications

  518. of pill boxes and machine guns and all

  519. kinds of stuff that were meant to keep

  520. the German people out from invading

  521. France. And they spent years on that.

  522. They spent years on that from 1929,

  523. right after the first world war, France

  524. says, "We don't want any more Germans

  525. attacking us." to the to 1936.

  526. And they thought it's impregnable.

  527. Nobody can get past this. The Germans

  528. over there, we're down here. We got the

  529. We got the Majino line.

  530. We're secure.

  531. You know what Hitler did in his armies?

  532. went through.

  533. >> They just bypassed it. Went through

  534. Belgium. Just bypassed the whole thing

  535. and came in and conquered France. What?

  536. A couple of weeks. It wasn't long.

  537. >> 14 days.

  538. Good historian.

  539. So yeah, the Germans, they went through

  540. Belgium and they they just that that

  541. that line of defense extended from uh

  542. from Switzerland to Luxembourg and they

  543. thought they had an impregnable

  544. uh defense, but they got flanked. They

  545. just they just went around it. Conquered

  546. Belgium first and then came into France.

  547. So their security,

  548. the French security was a false

  549. security.

  550. It's like having your front door locked

  551. and your side door locked and you think

  552. you're secure from a burglar coming in,

  553. but you left your back door wide open.

  554. You don't know that. You had thought

  555. about that. You think about checking

  556. So what was going on here is the false

  557. teachers

  558. had embraced this idea

  559. that

  560. was counter not only to Jeremiah but

  561. previous prophecies about the

  562. destruction of Jerusalem from other

  563. prophets.

  564. And they pedled that to the people and

  565. the people had heard it so long

  566. they believed it.

  567. And so the false teaching was embedded

  568. to the point that true true teaching

  569. when it was heard was despised

  570. and counted wrong and dangerous.

  571. You remember Paul said to the

  572. Corinthians, "Am I become your enemy

  573. because I told you the truth?

  574. They were listening to the lies so long

  575. the truth that Paul was speaking sounded

  576. foreign to them

  577. and they become suspicious of Paul.

  578. So there's a couple of things here right

  579. away. the importance of the whole

  580. council of God which includes the

  581. warning passages

  582. and and separation from false religion

  583. and false teaching as well as other

  584. things

  585. and uh not just a teaching that's

  586. partial or peace meal or uh so forth and

  587. the importance of learning the lessons

  588. of history.

  589. You got to know something of history,

  590. Bible history.

  591. The northern kingdom had already been

  592. taken into exile.

  593. They ignored what God said. So the 10

  594. northern tribes are gone.

  595. And the people in the south aren't they

  596. think they're going to be we got the

  597. temple. We're in Jerusalem. We're not

  598. like them.

  599. So the importance of learning the

  600. lessons of history. Henry Ford said

  601. history is just one blank thing after

  602. another. Remember that famous quote. I

  603. won't give you the blank.

  604. He didn't have much use for it.

  605. But if you if you don't know history,

  606. you'll repeat the mistakes that were

  607. made before. Right? There's famous

  608. quotes on that too.

  609. the importance of having a sense of

  610. history. But for many people, history is

  611. a very irrelevant subject. Uh they're

  612. locked into

  613. what they consider the most important

  614. time. So the South became isolated,

  615. gullible, naive, and manipulated

  616. by false teachers. Just like the West in

  617. America has been manipulated by false

  618. philosophies. They don't see the bigger

  619. picture

  620. and they're making some false

  621. connections.

  622. The false teachers are using what

  623. happened to King Hezekiah in Jerusalem

  624. 100 years before this as a reason why

  625. Jerusalem and the city can't fall. But

  626. Hezekiah was a good king and they don't

  627. and they're running out of good kings.

  628. Josiah is the last good king. The next

  629. five are going to be bad kings.

  630. And uh this is a uh the God has already

  631. destroyed a place of worship before

  632. Shiloh. That should tell the people that

  633. this interpretation

  634. is biblically

  635. uh confused.

  636. So the sins of the people are a fact of

  637. history.

  638. And if they'd known their own history or

  639. the history of the north and the history

  640. of their own, they would have seen

  641. through it.

  642. And so the importance knowing the Bible

  643. and knowing Bible history and knowing

  644. the importance there

  645. it says in Matthew 16 the gates of hell

  646. will not prevail against the church.

  647. That's truth. That is true.

  648. But that's that's talking about the

  649. universal church. It's not talking about

  650. any one local church. Local churches

  651. come and go. Right?

  652. Local churches come and go. Good

  653. churches come and go.

  654. You look in church history,

  655. you know, it's it's a rare church that

  656. it it keeps going and going and going

  657. and going and going going for hundreds

  658. of years.

  659. And if you look in Revelation 2 and 3,

  660. God would Jesus said, "I'm going to

  661. remove your land lampstand if you don't

  662. watch out." No local local church is uh

  663. should expect uh some exemption from

  664. going out of business.

  665. uh and and and that that going out of

  666. business is not always a bad thing.

  667. Sometimes God's done the work he wants

  668. to do at that place and that uh and

  669. God's moving on so for whatever reason.

  670. But the point is this

  671. you you nobody should have a false

  672. you want a true security. I believe in

  673. the security of the believer. I don't

  674. believe in the security of the

  675. professor.

  676. that lives a wicked life.

  677. So these are these are important lessons

  678. and good lessons that transcend where we

  679. are. So the third thing is a knowledge

  680. of the Bible and history that's broadly

  681. based. People need to know their Bible.

  682. They need to know their history.

  683. Let's not let other people do our study

  684. for us.

  685. Let's be sure we check it out ourselves.

  686. The Roman Catholics of many times let

  687. the priest do their study for them. I

  688. don't need to know the Bible. The priest

  689. will tell me whatever I need to go. I'm

  690. not saying all of them do that. I'm

  691. saying some of them do that. But when

  692. the religious leader goes off, then

  693. what's what you're depending on who?

  694. Somebody else to do all that for you.

  695. And when religious leaders go off, how

  696. you going to know they go off if you

  697. don't know your Bible?

  698. you won't

  699. you have a false confidence

  700. and and so in verse 8 and N there's

  701. people had a vested interest they they

  702. believe what they wanted to believe

  703. because that was their security blanket

  704. were in Jerusalem or better than those

  705. other people and uh so it says in verse

  706. 8 now it came to pass when Jeremiah had

  707. ceased speaking all the men all that the

  708. Lord The Lord commanded him to speak to

  709. all the people that the priests and the

  710. prophets and all the people took him,

  711. saying, "You shall surely die.

  712. You're a false prophet, Jeremy Jeremiah.

  713. We're going to execute you."

  714. That's what they did in the Old

  715. Testament, the false prophets.

  716. So, they're calling a true prophet

  717. a false prophet.

  718. And notice who's behind it.

  719. The people are behind it. The priests

  720. are behind it. And the prophets are

  721. behind it. The people that lived in

  722. Jerusalem, the prophets that were

  723. prophesying in Jerusalem, and the

  724. priests that were working in Jerusalem.

  725. Why have you prophesied in the name of

  726. the Lord, saying, "This house shall be

  727. like Shiloh, and this city shall be

  728. desolate without an inhabitant." And all

  729. the people were gathered against

  730. Jeremiah in the house of the Lord. So

  731. this really got heated pretty fast.

  732. Now remember the false prophets had a

  733. vested interest in this. They wanted to

  734. keep telling people everything's good.

  735. Everything's good. Keep people in the

  736. city to keep the money coming in to

  737. them. And the priest did as well.

  738. And so um

  739. uh and by the way the prophets and the

  740. priests were considered the what? The

  741. experts

  742. the experts.

  743. These people know what we don't know.

  744. You remember the few elections past

  745. there was a candidate for president that

  746. talked about climate change and how

  747. everything's going to be so bad in so

  748. many years and we have to do it now.

  749. Uh Al Gore was no prophet. Let me just

  750. put it that way.

  751. It hasn't happened. He said it's going

  752. to happen. And there's a generation of

  753. young people that don't want to get

  754. married, don't want to have kids because

  755. they believe what he said.

  756. But Alar is no prophet. And neither is

  757. any other politician, Republican or

  758. Democrat, by the way.

  759. But that's just a dramatic

  760. thing about it that illustration.

  761. So as we think about this um people in

  762. high places can be sincerely wrong,

  763. misinform themsel, deceive themsel.

  764. um

  765. professional pride

  766. and looking at people who differ from

  767. them and differ from their colleagues as

  768. outsiders who are endangering our place

  769. rather than maybe there's something new

  770. to that.

  771. So let's watch what happens. Verse 10.

  772. When the princes of Judah heard these

  773. things, then they came up from the

  774. king's house to the house of the Lord

  775. and sat down in the entrance of the new

  776. gate of the Lord's city. Now, the

  777. princes of Judah deals with the royalty,

  778. and they're they're they're not involved

  779. in this the way the prophets and priests

  780. were, but they came and sat down in the

  781. in the gate of the city. That's where

  782. the trials take place. Then spoke the

  783. priests and the prophets to the princes.

  784. says, "Get a bunch of P's here. The the

  785. priests and the prophets and the

  786. princes." And so the priests and the

  787. prophets were the ones that were wrong.

  788. And the princes were those that were

  789. they didn't have a dog in this fight, at

  790. least in their minds. And they're

  791. hearing it for the first time. And they

  792. said, "This man is worthy to die for

  793. he's prophesied against this city. Of

  794. all things, he's prophet against this

  795. city. This is the holy city.

  796. as you've heard with your ears.

  797. And so they're doing their best to

  798. pollute the minds of the princes of the

  799. city to get Jeremiah executed.

  800. Kind of sounds like the Sanhedrin

  801. for Pilate in Jesus's day.

  802. Uh, I love this section.

  803. Jeremiah

  804. responds to this.

  805. It's very interesting how he responds.

  806. Then spoke Jeremiah to all the princes

  807. and all the people, saying, "The Lord

  808. sent me to prophesy against this."

  809. and against this city. All the words

  810. you've heard.

  811. Don't get mad at me. Take it up with

  812. God.

  813. Therefore, now amend your ways and your

  814. doings and obey the voice of the Lord

  815. your God, and the Lord will repent or

  816. change his actions of the evil of the

  817. calamity that he has pronounced against

  818. you. you need to repent. You're the ones

  819. that are wrong. I'm the prophet of the

  820. Lord. And he just he owned it.

  821. And as for me, behold, I'm in your hand.

  822. Do with me as seems good and right to

  823. you. If you want to kill me, kill me.

  824. And he made clear who he was.

  825. Now, he could have done himself a bigger

  826. favor there.

  827. He was acting like a true prophet.

  828. True pastors, true Christians, we we

  829. know what the truth is. We stand for it

  830. whether we live or die. And we're not so

  831. much concerned about ourself as the

  832. truth of God that will continue in other

  833. people's lives.

  834. We're not trying to make a name for

  835. oursel. We're not trying to be popular.

  836. We're not trying to be have everybody

  837. like us. We're simply trying to do one

  838. thing. give out the word of God.

  839. And Jeremiah does that beautifully. And

  840. he really wasn't concerned about whether

  841. they killed him or not. He was concerned

  842. about whether the truth got out or not.

  843. Because now you got a situation where

  844. truth is being confronted with error.

  845. And the truth is being confronted with

  846. error in people in high places.

  847. What are the high places today?

  848. politicians,

  849. college professors,

  850. >> huh,

  851. >> popes, you know, there's all kind

  852. pastors in in churches that are not

  853. teaching the truth.

  854. And some people measure things in the

  855. wrong way and they overestimate the

  856. quality of these other individuals as

  857. they were doing then.

  858. And so Jeremiah says, "But as for me,

  859. I'm in your hand. Do what you seems good

  860. and right to you." Verse 15. But know

  861. for certain that if you put me to death,

  862. you do it, you put me to death, you will

  863. surely bring innocent blood on yourself.

  864. God will hold you accountable for it.

  865. Now, Jeremiah wasn't claiming

  866. sinlessness, but he was claiming what?

  867. I'm doing the right thing. You're doing

  868. the wrong thing.

  869. And you're executing me for being a

  870. false prophet when I'm not.

  871. And on this, you're bringing innocent

  872. blood on yourselves, on this city, and

  873. on its inhabitants. For of the truth,

  874. the Lord has sent me to speak all these

  875. words to you in your ears. What a

  876. beautiful defense.

  877. Not defending himself, willing to die.

  878. They b they say, I I'm not concerned

  879. about my life. I'm concerned about the

  880. truth maintaining itself in this city.

  881. There's something wrong here and I'm

  882. pointing it out.

  883. And you know that worked.

  884. It worked.

  885. Then said the princes, verse 16, and all

  886. the people unto the priest and to the

  887. prophets, "This man's not worthy to die.

  888. He's spoken to us in the name of the

  889. Lord." The people just 180ed

  890. falling for his death and then now now

  891. they're 180 and that boldness was

  892. beautiful.

  893. And Charles Fineberg says of Jeremiah,

  894. nowhere in the book does Jeremiah appear

  895. better.

  896. This was a high moment.

  897. And the princes saw that the prophets

  898. and priests uh uh they saw what the

  899. prophets and priests were missing.

  900. And it gets really interesting here,

  901. kind of exciting here.

  902. So in verse 16, then said the princes

  903. and all the people unto the priests and

  904. to the prophets, this man's not worthy

  905. to die, for he spoken to us in the name

  906. of the Lord our God. Then rose up

  907. certain of the elders of the land and

  908. spoke to all the assembly of the people,

  909. saying,"Now these elders have been

  910. quiet. Now they get into it. Jeremiah's

  911. not doing anything that Micah the

  912. prophet didn't do before him 100 years

  913. ago, and it's in our Bible.

  914. Jeremiah's being biblical. What's the

  915. matter with you?" And they're quoting

  916. Micah

    Micah 3:12

  917. 3:12,

  918. which is incredible because it shows us

  919. that the book of Micah was in the Bible

  920. at this time. You can't quote something

  921. that's not there. And that Micah was a

  922. legitimate historical person that lived

  923. a hundred years before this.

  924. And so in verse 17, then rose up certain

  925. of the elders of the land and spoke to

  926. all the assembly and people, saying,

  927. Micah the Moresite, the Morashite

  928. prophesied in the days of Hezekiah, king

  929. of Judah, and spoke to all the people,

  930. saying, Thus shall the Lord of host.

  931. Zion shall be plowed like a field, and

  932. Jeremiah shall and Jerusalem shall

  933. become heaps, and the mountain of the

  934. house like the high places in the

  935. forest.

  936. And that's exactly what Micah 3:12 says.

    Micah 3:12

  937. Now, why did these people know? Why were

  938. they able to stand up? They knew their

  939. Bible.

  940. They knew their Bible. The book of

  941. Michael was written and they've been

  942. reading it and they and and and that's

  943. the protection against false movements

  944. and false teachings. Know the word of

  945. God.

  946. And then it goes on, did Hezekiah, king

  947. of Judah, at all Judah, put him at all

  948. to death?

  949. Did he not fear the Lord and besought

  950. the Lord? And the Lord repented of the

  951. evil he pronounced against them, thus

  952. might we procure great evil against our

  953. souls.

  954. In other words, they didn't kill Micah.

  955. Yeah, but Hezekiah was a good king. He's

  956. a godly king.

  957. And so the point is we have a legal

  958. precedent for prophets telling us what

  959. we don't like to hear.

  960. We have a legal precedent for prophets

  961. predicting the destruction of this city

  962. and this temple. Jeremiah is not the

  963. first.

  964. It's already been done. We know Micah

  965. was a prophet. So you have no grounds to

  966. execute Jeremiah for doing the same

  967. thing Micah did 100 years ago.

  968. This is what Jeremiah is doing is not

  969. unprecedented, unbiblical, and to propag

  970. prophesy against this city. It's been

  971. done before. And we've got a biblical

  972. and historical example

  973. in Micah.

  974. What this did, it totally undermined

  975. The accusation by the prophets and

  976. priests against Jeremiah just popped

  977. their balloon, took all the gas out of

  978. it and everybody switched sides

  979. and they were left with egg on their

  980. face.

  981. You know, sometimes we think we have to

  982. defend ourselves and I'm not saying it's

  983. wrong in certain times we do. But God

  984. has other ways of defending us and other

  985. people besides ourselves.

  986. So let's be true to God's word and do

  987. what we're supposed to do and let God

  988. take care of all things. So three points

  989. so far. The importance of the whole

  990. council of God, knowing history

  991. uh and uh not the sanitized uh version

  992. of it or the uh the kind that uh is

  993. distorted. knowing history, true

  994. history, and having a uh a picture of of

  995. the importance of knowing the scriptures

  996. and what's gone before us. Not it's not

  997. safe to be ignorant of the history of

  998. the Bible history. It's not safe because

  999. false teachers can come and detract.

  1000. So

  1001. um

  1002. fourth lesson,

1003. prophets can't do it alone.

1004. Pastors can't do it alone. Preachers

1005. can't do it alone. Missionaries can't do

1006. it alone. It takes other people

1007. to amen what they're doing, to back up

  1008. what they're doing.

1009. And that's what we have here. So people

1010. were switching sides. We need something

  1011. more than bold preachers.

1012. Preachers need the support of their

1013. local church and other ministry. So the

1014. whole church is behind it. And we're

  1015. saying that's got our support. That's

1016. what was going on here. And it was a

  1017. tremendous moment.

1018. Tremendous moment. Now it goes on. I've

1019. got to hurry because I'm almost done. I

1020. want to I want to say a couple other

  1021. things.

  1022. Uh

1023. verse 20, there was also a man who

1024. prophesied in the name of the Lord,

1025. Uriah, the son of Shamayiah of Keroth

1026. Jarim, who prophesied against this city

1027. and against this land according to all

1028. the words of Jeremiah. He's bringing

1029. somebody in besides Micah. In other

1030. words, Micah is not the only one.

1031. There's this other guy. And apparently,

1032. they all knew him. We don't know him,

1033. but he was there. There were prophets

1034. who were writing prophets and some were

1035. just speaking prophets. And when

1036. Jehookim, the king with all his mighty

1037. men and princes heard the his words, the

1038. king sought to put him to death. But

1039. when Uriah heard it, he was afraid and

1040. fled and went into Egypt. So people have

1041. been upset before that prophet had to

1042. run out of town. And Jehoakim the king

1043. sent men to Egypt, namely El Nathan, the

1044. son of Akmar, and certain men with him

1045. into Egypt. They fetched Uriah out of

1046. Egypt, brought him to Johakim, the king,

1047. who slew him with the sword and cast his

1048. dead body into a burial place of a

1049. common people. Nevertheless, the hand of

1050. Ahaikim, the son of Shaan, was with

1051. Jeremiah that they should not give him

1052. into the hand of the people to put him

1053. to death. So, Hikam's a very interesting

  1054. individual. That's a family that's Hayam

1055. was official under Josiah. His brother

1056. was Gariah. His son was Gataliah in this

1057. book of fine family. Now let's close

1058. this out a little bit.

  1059. Um

1060. Shiloh was not far from Jerusalem.

  1061. Shiloh had been destroyed.

1062. People could see the evidence of it

  1063. themselves.

1064. God had done it before

1065. and therefore the whole argument of

1066. false teachers was false on its face.

1067. And um being a false prophet, which

1068. Jeremiah's enemies were, was punishable

1069. by death according to the law of Moses.

  1070. Deuteronomy 18:20. It wasn't Jeremiah

    Deuteronomy 18:20

1071. that needed to die. It was the prophets

1072. that were calling for his death.

1073. and making false prophecies that

  1074. Jerusalem couldn't be destroyed.

1075. So, history hasn't changed much, has it?

1076. Uh, you think Athens Bible Church is the

1077. most popular church in town?

1078. You think any church that teaches the

1079. Bible in this county is going to be real

  1080. popular?

  1081. Not.

1082. So we have to learn

  1083. to take it

  1084. um and

1085. expect it and teach the whole council of

1086. God regardless. Jesus said in John 16 to

1087. the apostles verse two, "The time's

1088. coming when those that kill you will

  1089. think they're doing God a service."

1090. So things haven't changed too much, have

  1091. they?

1092. Doug Jones says, "Chapter 26 is less

1093. concerned with the content of Jeremiah's

1094. sermon than the way it divided his

  1095. audience."

1096. Uh, you can go through the book of Acts

1097. and see how crowds were divided when

1098. Paul preached or Peter preached.

  1099. It's very interesting.

1100. Kylin Dich in their writings on Jeremiah

1101. entitled this section the accusation and

  1102. acquitt

  1103. of Jeremiah.

1104. The accusation and acquitt of Jeremiah.

1105. That's a pretty good synopsis of it.

1106. Jeremiah's only crime was he preached

1107. the word of God. May that be my only

1108. crime and your only crime. May people

1109. find that may they find fault with this.

1110. Those people are too serious about the

1111. Bible. Okay, we'll take that. We'll take

1112. that. We'll wear that. May it be true.

  1113. May it be true.

  1114. And uh

  1115. so God help us.

  1116. It's fascinating when God's judgments

1117. come. Sometimes it's on a local church

1118. as we saw in Revelation 2 and three.

1119. Sometimes it's on a false religion. When

1120. I was traveling uh in the Middle East

1121. with Andrea last year, we found a mosque

1122. that had been turned into a church. That

  1123. was fun.

1124. Often it's the other way around.

1125. We and I actually went in that church

1126. and actually had interesting time in

  1127. there.

  1128. Um,

1129. so Jeremiah's defenders came up with a

1130. perfect legal precedent that he was

1131. innocent, shouldn't be executed, and the

1132. false teachers had left with red faces.

1133. One more lesson before we close.

1134. When I was reading this, I was reading

1135. it, studying this week all week in the

1136. NIV study Bible. And I noticed, and

1137. that's according to the NIV Study Bible,

1138. the word listen and heard were used over

1139. and over and over again.

1140. Listen in verse three, four, and five.

  1141. Heard in verse 7, 10, 11, 12, and 20,

1142. and 21. and hearing in verse 15.

  1143. It's very interesting.

  1144. The point is

1145. the point is the pe prophets uh uh the

1146. prophets and the people they heard the

1147. message but they didn't listen to the

1148. they heard the message but they didn't

1149. listen to the meaning of the message.

1150. It wasn't that the acoustics were bad

1151. and Jeremiah couldn't be heard. They

1152. heard what he said. They didn't like

  1153. what he said.

1154. They heard what he said. They could even

1155. repeat what he said. They repeated it in

1156. verse 11 and they used it against him.

1157. But they didn't get the point.

1158. They didn't get the lesson.

1159. There was no submission. There was no

  1160. repentance.

1161. Why? Because another message had taken

1162. all the room in their heart. Temple

  1163. can't be destroyed. Jerusalem can't be

1164. destroyed and we can live however we

1165. want and we can do whatever we want and

1166. we've got a get out of jail free card.

1167. Now what was interesting to me as I all

1168. these exhortations to listen and to hear

1169. we see those repeated in chapter 27

  1170. verse 9-11 and 14- 15 and 16-1 17

  1171. chapter 29:8

  1172. chapter 29 and 20 chapter 32 32 and 33

1173. in other words there seems to be

1174. something going on in these chapters

1175. the people are called to listen,

  1176. but they're not listening.

1177. They're not listening. The reason God

1178. calls them to listen and listen and

1179. listen is they're not listening.

1180. May that not be true of us.

1181. May we be pliable. May we be sensitive.

1182. May we uh let God's word change us and

1183. challenge us and sanctify us and convict

  1184. us.

1185. and do its work in us. Because if we

  1186. don't, the alternative isn't neutrality.

1187. The alternative is satanic lies,

1188. cultural deviation of this world, false

1189. interpretations of reality come pouring

  1190. in.

1191. It's either hear what God says. Listen,

1192. it comes down to the first the third

1193. chapter of the Bible. Either you're

1194. listening to the serpent or you're

  1195. listening to God.

1196. >> Either you're listening to the serpent

1197. or you're listening to God.

  1198. That's the alternative.

1199. Father, thank you for the time we spent

1200. together today. challenge us and change

1201. us with your word as we move through

1202. these very now we're getting into

  1203. extremely important sections of

1204. Jeremiah. Bless us as we study it, not

1205. just as something long ago, but

1206. something that's very pertinent to our

  1207. very lives today,

1208. especially since we're under the new

  1209. covenant.

1210. In Jesus name, amen. Amen.

1211. Lord, as we go from this place,

  1212. loving you more,

  1213. trusting you more.

1214. May the power of your love and the light

1215. of your word shine to a sin darkened

1216. world as we go from this place.
