  1. I trust everyone's had enough hot dogs

  2. and July 4th fireworks to satisfy them

  3. for another year.

  4. So, I'd like to

  5. welcome you all this morning as we enjoy

  6. missionaries.

  7. Well, since I'm subbing for Steve

  8. Benson, when you're dealing with one one

  9. Sunday school lesson, it's a little bit

  10. of a challenge. Wow. What do I teach on

  11. that would be helpful and beneficial?

  12. So, uh, as I've thought through this and

  13. prayed through this, I I thought about

  14. doing something this morning on John the

  15. Baptist,

  16. the significance,

  17. great significance

  18. of John the Baptist.

  19. Um,

  20. I want you to think and I want to look

  21. at it in reference not just to what

  22. happened but in reference to the

  23. resurrection of Jesus Christ

  24. which is the major ev the major emphasis

  25. in the Bible. The resurrection of our

  26. Lord Jesus Christ is not an isolated

  27. event.

  28. It's preceded by many other events in

  29. history and in uh but even in the Old

  30. Testament as well as the history of the

  31. three-year ministry of Jesus. And

  32. there's a whole cluster of events

  33. that accompany the revelation of Jesus

  34. Christ and the resurrection of Jesus

  35. Christ that are pro providential and

  36. supernatural

  37. and are recorded in the scriptures.

  38. The ministry of John the Baptist is just

  39. one

  40. of other events. And often when we think

  41. of the resurrection, we think about

  42. defending the bodily resurrection of

  43. Jesus against those who deny he rose

  44. from the dead. But we don't always go

  45. into these other

  46. events.

  47. And you know, there's direct evidence

  48. and there's circumstantial evidence. In

  49. the court of law, there's different

  50. kinds of evidences.

  51. And we have the direct evidence, but we

  52. also have a boatload of circumstantial

  53. evidence that cor that help us know the

  54. reality of the resurrection of the Lord

  55. Jesus Christ. And John the Baptist is

  56. part of that cluster of evidences.

  57. He's included in every one of the four

  58. gospels.

  59. Everyone,

  60. you know, Luke, I mean, excuse me,

  61. Matthew, Luke, and John record the birth

  62. of Jesus.

  63. Mark does not.

  64. Now, the birth of Jesus is a major

  65. event.

  66. Mark does not record the birth of Jesus

  67. that he records John the Baptist.

  68. I mean, just think about that.

  69. It's something to think about. Mark was

  70. writing a gospel with an economy of room

  71. and he he I'm sure he knew about the

  72. birth of Jesus. He just chose not to

  73. not to in in record it in his gospel.

  74. But having said that, he recorded John

  75. the Baptist. He couldn't start

  76. he couldn't leave that part out. I mean,

  77. been thinking about that. He left out

  78. the birth of Jesus, but he didn't leave

  79. out the ministry of John.

  80. John the Baptist ministry is that

  81. significant.

  82. It could not be left out

  83. and for many reasons.

  84. And there's all kinds of evidences in

  85. the Bible that I think

  86. for the veracity of scriptures and the

  87. veracity of the gospel of Jesus Christ,

  88. some are direct evidences, some are

  89. circumstantial evidences, but the

  90. resurrection of Jesus does not come

  91. alone.

  92. And I'm not talking about the empty tomb

  93. and the and the 500 witnesses. I'm

  94. talking about other stuff, a

  95. broaderbased stuff that we often don't

  96. even think about.

  97. uh and the ministry and message of John

  98. the Baptist is one. How about the

  99. destruction of Jerusalem in 40 AD after?

  100. That's a that's another thing that went

  101. on at that time in that cluster of time.

  102. How about the speaking of tongues which

  103. I believe was speaking in other

  104. languages which you'd never learned. It

  105. was a linguistic miracle

  106. at the day of Pentecost. How about the

  107. gospel going into all the gentile world?

  108. Jesus said, "Go into all the world and

  109. preach the gospel." And the New

  110. Testament is clear. The gospel is going

  111. to go around the world.

  112. And it has already. As you've heard me

  113. say, my dad was in Tonga, uh, in Guadal

  114. Canal and places like that in the

  115. Pacific. I said, "Dad, guess what?

  116. You've been to the ends of the earth.

  117. Jerusalem, you're on the exact opposite

  118. of Jerusalem when you were there."

  119. And so the salvation of Gentiles is

  120. mentioned in Psalm 22.

  121. Salvation of Gentiles is emphasized in

  122. Psalm 22, which predicts Jesus's death

  123. and his resurrection

  124. and all of that kind of stuff.

  125. uh the the uh the persecution and uh

  126. first the scattering of the Jews, then

  127. the persecution and return of Jews to

  128. the land, the political resurrection

  129. that is also I think part of this

  130. cluster. The scale of it and the scope

  131. of it is amazing

  132. and we often don't get cast a wide

  133. enough net to just think about this book

  134. that tells us about Jesus that gives us

  135. the gospel has collaborating

  136. circumstantial

  137. uh direct evidence all over the place

  138. and you put it together and you say this

  139. cannot be manufactured by Man,

  140. this is not a man-made thing like the

  141. cults have.

  142. Now, all Christians in all local

  143. churches have a clear responsibility to

  144. proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ both

  145. near and far.

  146. And we should be involved near and far.

  147. I saw a YouTube where a pastor was was

  148. telling people that were wanted to come

  149. to his church and join his church, if

  150. you're not willing to go on a mission

  151. trip every 3 years, you you can't be a

  152. member of our church. Now, I think

  153. that's a little that's a little radical,

  154. but he actually said that. That's just

  155. over a little bit over the top. But

  156. obviously churches should be involved

  157. not just with their money and their

  158. prayers, but sometimes with their

  159. presence

  160. and uh not to the extent that that man

  161. was expecting. Uh but I think he I don't

  162. know I don't know the guy either way. He

  163. had a vision for missions. Every church

  164. should have a vision for missions

  165. locally and internationally.

  166. And of course, worshiping our God is the

  167. core thing. But working for our God is

  168. after that. We're not to make workers.

  169. We make worshippers. And we worshipers

  170. will be workers, right? The goal is not

  171. to make workers. The goal is to make

  172. worshippers. When you make worshippers,

  173. you can get workers.

  174. People aren't worshiping the Lord. They

  175. won't be working for the Lord.

  176. And that's kind of important.

  177. Why am I not doing something for the

  178. Lord?

  179. Maybe

  180. I'm not worshiping him to such a degree

  181. that it will impel me to express myself

  182. in love to him and to others in the

  183. gospel.

  184. Now, we're supposed to minister to one

  185. another in the body of Christ, but we're

  186. also to be reaching out to those outside

  187. the body. These are all big things. And

  188. uh we we we know we live in a world

  189. where people have a do-it-yourself

  190. salvation. Whether it's the eight-fold

  191. path of Buddhism or the five pillars of

  192. Islam, that's a do-it-yourself

  193. autooteric system.

  194. Our job is not to just confront them

  195. with the errors of those things, but to

  196. proclaim our Lord. Neither is it to

  197. argue over much. I believe there's great

  198. arguments, but our job is to primarily

  199. proclaim

  200. and let God do it. Because many people

  201. say, "I don't know all this stuff about

  202. John the Baptist. I don't know all this

  203. stuff about I can't argue everything."

  204. Well, you can proclaim the gospel

  205. because God uses that.

  206. We're not all apologeticists. We're not

  207. all uh geared that way, but we can give

  208. the gospel.

  209. And it's important for us to do that.

  210. One of the most fruitful times of my

  211. life was before I went to seminary.

  212. It I had 80 people in two different

  213. Bible classes, 40 each. I was 22 years

  214. old. I didn't know. I was learning as I

  215. went.

  216. It was really bizarre, but God used it.

  217. So the point is uh God may God help us

  218. to understand our responsibility to

  219. proclaim the gospel and therefore our

  220. responsibility to understand the Bible

  221. that gives us a gospel to proclaim and

  222. it goes beyond knowing the resurrection.

  223. We should know these other things. I I'm

  224. I'm one personally. I don't like to

  225. argue about were Adam and Eve real

  226. people or is evolution true or not or or

  227. any of the other stuff people is God a

  228. wicked God or a good God. I I I like to

  229. cut through that and say, you know, all

  230. those are good questions.

  231. But here is the e this is the e the

  232. issue. Did Jesus come out of the grave

  233. or not?

  234. He came out of the grave. Christianity

  235. is true. The Bible's true. Everything

  236. else is false.

  237. If he didn't, if Christ isn't risen,

  238. your faith is vain and our proclamation

  239. is done. So, I think it for the unsaved

  240. person, they want to jump all around and

  241. ask 20 different questions on 20

  242. different subjects, and you never get to

  243. the right, you never get them to the

  244. place they need to be.

  245. Dr. Dr. Witkim in apologetics class in

  246. seminary

  247. gave this testimony about his time at

  248. Princeton University

  249. and he u he said there was a student

  250. that didn't believe Jonah could come out

  251. of the fish on the third day and

  252. survive. He said so I I I researched it

  253. all these places where somebody had been

  254. swallowed by a fish and survived and I

  255. had all these books on on Jonah and the

  256. fish and I gave them to him. He didn't

  257. even read them.

  258. So I said he he told his spiritual

  259. father, Dr. Donald B. Fullerton, who's a

  260. very wise missionary and and campus

  261. minister

  262. later,

  263. he said, "Would you go over and talk to

  264. this guy? I can't get anywhere."

  265. And so they did and knocked on the door

  266. and uh the guy answered and everybody

  267. else scattered like ants. Everybody in

  268. the room took off fast, emptied the

  269. room. He was standing there and the guy

  270. said, "Well, I just don't believe Jonah

  271. came out of the fish and was in the fish

  272. three days." And you know what he said?

  273. He Dr. Wickham learned something about

  274. witnessing. He said,

  275. Donald Fitrin said to him, "That's a

  276. very good question. I'd love to talk to

  277. you about that sometime, but right now I

  278. want to talk to you about Jesus coming

  279. out of the grave

  280. and the gospel that comes from and he

  281. led the guy to the Lord in 10 minutes.

  282. We need to keep the main thing the main

  283. thing. Need to major on majors, minor on

  284. minors. And but what I'm saying today is

  285. John the Baptist ministry is part of a

  286. cluster of evidence that helps us

  287. proclaim the resurrection if we just

  288. think about it. We don't always think

  289. about it. And uh yet there's a cogency

  290. and a viability and veracity of the

  291. gospels as they present the indepth this

  292. thing.

  293. So may the Lord help us to do that. this

  294. morning the enormous significance of

  295. this subject.

  296. So, as I said, all four gospels include

  297. John the Baptist. In fact, they begin

  298. with him in one way or the other in the

  299. first few chapters. You're there.

  300. Uh big big amount of material really.

  301. And by the way, the book of Acts begins

  302. with him.

  303. Not just Jesus. They got Jesus in the 40

  304. days and day and night. But remember

  305. when they had to replace Judas

  306. be what? We need another apostle to

  307. replace Judas to be a witness of the

  308. what? The resurrection.

  309. So they looked at who was qualified and

  310. they voted. They wanted 12 people out of

  311. uh that 120. Uh there was 12 people uh

  312. that needed to stand up called

  313. Pentecost.

  314. And what was the qualifications to be

  315. one of the 12 after Judas was dead? You

  316. had they started with what? John the

  317. Baptist.

  318. Did you you remember reading that in

  319. Acts one? John the Baptist.

  320. Turn there. Turn if you will there for

  321. me just a minute. It's you sometimes we

  322. need to ask some questions, right? Why

  323. was that so important? Why? You could

  324. any of the 500 that saw him, they could

  325. witness. Any of the women that saw him,

  326. they could witness. Why does it have to

  327. be

  328. beginning at John the Baptist? Because

  329. there's a story that precedes

  330. the death, burial, and resurrection of

  331. Jesus Christ, of the public ministry of

  332. Jesus. And that story of that public

  333. ministry begins with Jesus's baptism by

  334. John and the events that happened when

  335. it happened. And so if let's see I want

  336. a reader for this. Somebody uh pick this

  337. up. Uh

  338. let's pick it up in John Acts 1 verse 21

    Acts 1:21–23

  339. to 23. Somebody read it. Who wants it?

  340. John

  341. the Lord Jesus

  342. now among us.

  343. came from the baptism of John which is

  344. the same day that he was taken up from

  345. us

  346. one or the witness with us of his

  347. resurrection.

  348. They appointed two

  349. name justice and

  350. they prayed and said, "Thou Lord, which

  351. know the hearts of all men, show whether

  352. of these truths thou hast

  353. you may take part this ministry and

  354. apostles

  355. from which Judith by translation

  356. that he might go to his own place.

  357. They gave forth their

  358. fellow upon

  359. heaven.

  360. Okay, thank you John. Now verse 22 is

  361. the key beginning from the baptism of

  362. John.

  363. And so they want that was a

  364. qualification beyond just seeing Jesus

  365. or believing in the resurrection.

  366. When Peter stood up and preached the day

  367. of Pentecost, they wanted 11 11 other

  368. apostles beside him. And the I believe

  369. in some sense they saw the ministry of

  370. John and the ministry of Jesus as

  371. connected

  372. and very important.

  373. Not just the baptism and the voice

  374. coming down from heaven, but the fact

  375. that what John said and what he didn't

  376. say about Jesus on that occasion.

  377. Now, John the Baptist is therefore

  378. important. And by the way, John the

  379. Baptist has extra biblical confirmation.

  380. The Jewish historian Josephus, who was

  381. no Christian,

  382. talks about John the Baptist. He

  383. mentions Jesus, but he also mentions

  384. John the Baptist.

  385. So, we know there was a John the

  386. Baptist, not just because the Bible says

  387. it, but because a Jewish historian said

  388. it. Now, actually, the Bible's more

  389. accurate about some of the dates than

  390. Josephus is, but uh John the Baptist

  391. talked about, excuse me, Josephus talked

  392. about John the Baptist. And so, the idea

  393. that he's not historical or that Jesus

  394. is not historical doesn't doesn't wash.

  395. Okay, let's uh

  396. think through the four gospels a little

  397. bit.

  398. Somebody open their Bible to Matthew

    Matthew 3:7–17

  399. 3:7-17.

  400. Matthew 37-17

  401. besides John. Who wants to read Matthew

  402. 37-17?

  403. >> Okay. Sue.

  404. But

  405. when he saw many of the Pharisees and

  406. Sadducees under his baptism, he said to

  407. them, "Oh generation of vipers, you have

  408. Brats

  409. is

  410. therefore every tree

  411. is down.

  412. I indeed baptize you

  413. that come back.

  414. >> I think that's probably good enough. In

  415. other words, he that comes after me,

  416. right? So John was all about testifying

  417. about Jesus. The Messiah is coming. I'm

  418. here to prepare you for the Messiah's

  419. coming.

  420. And that's the emphasis there in

  421. Matthew.

  422. And basically he's John saying to the

  423. Pharisees and the Sadducees

  424. that are coming to his baptism, you're

  425. not saved. You're not ready.

  426. You got to bring forth fruit worthy of

  427. repentance. Everybody does. and uh uh he

  428. really laid into them. So that's

  429. Matthew's account. Luke's account

  430. amazingly starts not with the uh birth

  431. of Jesus but the birth of John the

  432. Baptist

  433. and the conception and birth of John the

  434. Baptist. Not that John the Baptist is

  435. more important than Jesus but John the

  436. Baptist is the one who introduced Jesus

  437. to the nation.

  438. And Luke dates with precision the

  439. ministry of John the Baptist in Luke

    Luke 13:1

  440. 13:1.

  441. So Luke uh in his gospel doesn't start

  442. with the birth of Jesus like Matthew and

  443. and uh and John do. Uh he he starts with

  444. the birth of John the Baptist and then

  445. the birth of Jesus. He puts them

  446. together. He connects the dots on it

  447. with John rejoicing in his mother's

  448. womb. John's six months older than the

  449. Lord as far as our Lord's humanity.

  450. It's interesting. The more you think

  451. about this,

  452. the more

  453. powerful it is.

  454. Here's John the Baptist who was such a

  455. powerful witness to the Lord Jesus

  456. Christ.

  457. that Jesus could say when the his

  458. enemies said, "What sign are you showing

  459. that you're doing these things? You're

  460. coming to this temple. Who do you think

  461. you are?

  462. What sign do you show?" And Jesus said,

  463. "Well, I'll ask you one question.

  464. The baptism of John,

  465. is it of heaven

  466. or of men?"

  467. Now, they could have answered that,

  468. but they knew it'd get him in trouble.

  469. They believed it was from men.

  470. And they said, "We can't answer. They

  471. weren't honest."

  472. And so, they would not answer that

  473. question. And Jesus said, "If you're not

  474. going to answer my question, I'm not

  475. answering yours because you're not

  476. honest.

  477. You're not being honest with yourself or

  478. with me. And that's why a lot of people

  479. aren't saved. They're not honest with

  480. themsel or with Jesus.

  481. But Jesus went back to John. It's a

  482. fascinating business in Luke, isn't it?

  483. And uh and uh in John's account, it's

  484. the same thing. John the Baptist is

  485. mentioned in the introduction

  486. in John chapter 1, that 18 verse

    John 1 chapter mention

  487. introduction to the whole gospel. And

  488. John the Baptist says, "He must

  489. increase, I must decrease. He that has

  490. the bride is the bridegroom." John knew

  491. who he was.

  492. I I'm not the Messiah. I'm the best man.

  493. And so very important stuff really if we

  494. just stop and think about it.

  495. Now

  496. in Acts 19,

  497. you find some of John the Baptist

  498. converts

  499. in Ephesus.

  500. That's how far he reached himself.

  501. Not that he ever went to Ephesus, but I

  502. mean the the people from his ministry

  503. out there wandering around

  504. and the Christians found some of them.

  505. So it's a fascinating thing. And Paul

  506. said, 'Well, to whom are you baptized?

  507. And to John's baptism, we hadn't even

  508. heard if there was a Holy Spirit. He'd

  509. missed all the kind of stuff afterwards,

  510. but they had what they had. So his his

  511. it's kind of like Athens Bible Church.

  512. We got people all over the world from

  513. here from our ministry here uh and

  514. scattered and John's ministry went it

  515. scattered

  516. and people were in other places. So all

  517. this is fascinating stuff. He had a vast

  518. influence.

  519. He was the forerunner. He was the best

  520. man. And the more I ponder John, the

  521. more I'm stunned by the whole thing, his

  522. whole ministry. So go with me to Mark's

  523. Gospel and we will try to work at Mark

  524. who skipped the birth narrative but did

  525. not skip John the Baptist.

  526. Mark one. in the time we have left.

  527. Mark chapter 1,

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  528. the beginning of the gospel of Jesus

  529. Christ, the son of God.

  530. As it's written in the prophets, behold,

  531. I send my messenger before thy face, who

  532. shall prepare thy way before thee. Where

  533. has that come from? There's he's quoting

  534. a a collection of Old Testament verses

  535. there, right? This is the only time Mark

  536. quotes the Old Testament himself.

  537. Now others refer to the Old Testament in

  538. his gospel but this is a this is the

  539. only time John Mark himself quotes the

  540. Old Testament

  541. and it's a collection of verses here.

  542. Malachi 3 is in here. Isaiah 40 is in

  543. here. Exodus 20 is somewhere in here.

  544. There's a collection of verses that he

  545. puts together

  546. as it's written in the prophets.

  547. As it's written in the prophets,

  548. behold, I send my messenger before thy

  549. face, who shall prepare thy way before

  550. thee. The voice of one crying in the

  551. wilderness, prepare ye the way of the

  552. Lord, make his paths straight.

  553. It's a fascinating verse. I did my

  554. master's thesis on that verse. I've been

  555. fascinated by this unique

  556. um quotation of Mark. Obviously, he felt

  557. this was very very important.

  558. And Mark's writing in 64 to 67 AD about

  559. 35 years after the event.

  560. Now, I'm old enough to remember things

  561. 35 years ago.

  562. I've got children in their 40s

  563. and late 30s.

  564. I remember it. That's there's events

  565. very very clear to me.

  566. I forget a lot of stuff. I am very

  567. absent- minded. My wife will tell you I

  568. forget a lot of stuff. I remember

  569. everything about the birth of every one

  570. of my children.

  571. I mean, there's things that are so

  572. significant, there's just no forgetting

  573. it.

  574. And for John Mark,

  575. uh, these events were very, very real to

  576. him. Whether he saw them or was with

  577. other people who saw them, there was

  578. enough that he could collect from others

  579. that knew about it 35 years later where

  580. it was very clear. So the gospel is

  581. what? It's the gospel is the good news.

  582. If you want the bad news, read the

  583. newspaper or watch YouTube. You'll get

  584. bad news. Uh, but we got good news. And

  585. the Bible's not all good news. There's

  586. some bad news for sinners,

  587. but the gospel itself is good news. And

  588. part of that good news is God demands

  589. 100% perfection 100% of the time over

  590. 100% of the people.

  591. And although none of us have done that,

  592. there was one who did, and his name is

  593. Jesus.

  594. and he's the one that died for us and

  595. rose again. Now, as we know, the gospel

  596. of Jesus Christ, the son of God, Jesus

  597. is his personal name. Uh Christ is his

  598. public office. Uh people call me Pastor

  599. Hixon, but pastor is not my first name.

  600. That's a title, right? And so, Christ is

  601. a title.

  602. It's office. He's the anointed one.

  603. He's publicly chosen and equipped.

  604. So uh

  605. it starts off the beginning of the

  606. gospel of Jesus Messiah the son of God.

  607. The son of God

  608. and that is not describing derivation

  609. that is describing identity.

  610. son of in the in the Old Testament

  611. scriptures refers to often being the son

  612. of so and so or the son of so and so

  613. derivation but it also refers to your uh

  614. group to which you belong

  615. and we have a fine thing from Dr. best

  616. my Hebrew prophet on the son of God in

  617. the Old Testament idiom. And so son of

  618. God means he's God.

  619. That's the bottom line.

  620. So John the Baptist comes and uh he he

  621. the be the beginning of the gospel was

  622. really the beginning of the preaching of

  623. John even before Jesus had had uh hadn't

  624. died yet. It was the beginning.

  625. So John Bra Baptist cut through

  626. everything and proclaimed Jesus as the

  627. son of God. And that term is used

  628. several times in Mark. I think about

  629. one, two, three, four, five, six, seven

  630. times or eight. He's the eternal son of

  631. God. That's metaphysical, not messianic.

  632. And praise God for our Lord.

  633. Now, if your message isn't about Jesus,

  634. your message isn't the gospel.

  635. People use that word gospel very

  636. loosely.

  637. Some 30 years ago were using it of

  638. Marxism

  639. and they they they use that word gospel.

  640. You leave Jesus out, you're leaving the

  641. main thing out. The good news is about

  642. Jesus Christ, the son of God.

  643. Now let's remember something else. Mark

  644. was not writing this gospel alone.

  645. Papius, one of the church fathers, tells

  646. us that John Mark wrote under Peter's

  647. direction.

  648. So the gospel of Mark is really a gospel

  649. of Peter

  650. and Peter was behind it.

  651. Peter was directing it and John Mark was

  652. writing this gospel maybe possibly to

  653. for Peter to use in evangelism and so

  654. forth. Uh but it was Peter behind the

  655. writing of the whole thing.

  656. And John's known for his brevity. He's a

  657. man of few words. His gospel is shorter

  658. than the others. He's brief. He's

  659. compact. He's concise.

  660. But

  661. he includes what's necessary.

  662. Martin Luther said a a preacher stand

  663. up, speak out, and stop short. And and

  664. Mark did that. He nothing long- winded

  665. about Mark.

  666. And

  667. it's very interesting what he's doing

  668. here.

  669. So this is important. He he left out a

  670. lot of stuff. uh he made it very concise

  671. but he didn't leave out the important

  672. stuff he kept the important stuff in.

  673. Now the other stuff's important as well

  674. or the others would not

  675. um have done it.

  676. So Mark here does something interesting.

  677. Uh it's definitely Matthew 3:1 and

    Matthew 3:1

  678. Isaiah 43. some see see something from

  679. uh I believe it's Exodus in there 20 or

  680. something but definitely Matthew 3:1 and

    Matthew 3:1

  681. Isaiah 43 he marries them and puts them

  682. as a composite quotation

  683. and this was a marriage made in heaven

  684. uh God takes something from Isaiah God

  685. takes something from Malachi

  686. and these quotations are queuing us in

  687. to the Old Testament scriptures as a

  688. whole speaking about Jesus. So John

  689. didn't stand alone. There was a book

  690. written before he even came.

  691. And what a wonderful thing. How many

  692. like the book of Malachi? It's one of my

  693. favorite books.

  694. I remember I think that was the first

  695. Old Testament book I ever taught.

  696. wanted to pick a little one.

  697. And so I picked Malachi. And I learned

  698. to love the book of Malachi from an

  699. early age as a young preacher. And I'm

  700. glad I did. And I still enjoy teaching

  701. it. I've taught it here more than once.

  702. I also love Isaiah, but I've only taught

  703. through that one time. That's not a book

  704. you preach to too much. You don't live

  705. long enough to do that.

  706. I've taught from it many times, but I've

  707. only taught it from beginning to end

  708. once.

  709. If I live long enough again, if we ever

  710. get through Jeremiah again, which I'm

  711. working on now, I'm now Isaiah's on my

  712. list.

  713. But, uh, Isaiah 43 is a key section,

  714. right?

  715. Some of you that are listening online,

  716. Isaiah, the book of Isaiah divides up

  717. into two parts.

  718. Chapters 1-39 is a message of judgment.

  719. Chapters 40-6 is a message of comfort.

  720. Comfort, comfort, my people is in Isaiah

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  721. chapter 40.

  722. And Dr. Witkin pointed this out to us.

  723. And of course, chapter divisions are

  724. man-made, but he pointed out to us that

  725. Isaiah 40-6 has 26 chapters. You divide

  726. 26 by two, you get 13. You add 13 to 40,

  727. you get Isaiah 53.

  728. So in the middle

  729. of the comfort section

  730. is the death, burial, and resurrection

  731. of Jesus prophecy.

  732. And I remember Isaiah 53 is not just a

  733. prophecy of the first coming of Jesus to

  734. die. It's the prophecy of Israel getting

  735. saved at the end of history, finally

  736. believing that they were wrong

  737. and reflecting on what happened before.

  738. The middle is a fascinating thing, the

  739. middle of that comfort section.

  740. There's no comfort apart from the cross.

  741. There's no comfort apart from the fact

  742. that sins are paid for and death is

  743. defeated.

  744. And that's a so all that's very precious

  745. and John preached it. That that

  746. reference to Isaiah 43 is a reference to

  747. that one verse, but it's also a

  748. reference to everything else in that

  749. section

  750. of scripture.

  751. Um,

  752. now

  753. I know you know these verses. I'm not

  754. turning to him for time sake cuz well

  755. turn go back go to Isaiah 43. Let's new

  756. turn to him. We got enough time I

  757. believe.

  758. So hundreds of years before Jesus was

  759. born, the prophet Isaiah

  760. is given this this wonderful prophecy.

  761. And the prophecy starts with the

  762. iniquity of Israel being pardoned and

  763. have and having received double for all

  764. her sins. And then it says, "The voice

  765. Isaiah 40:3 of him that cries in the

    Isaiah 40:3

  766. wilderness, prepare ye the way of the

  767. Lord, make straight in the desert a

  768. highway for our God. Every valley will

  769. be exalted, every mountain and hill be

  770. made low, the crooked will be made

  771. straight, the rough places plain, and

  772. the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,

  773. and all flesh shall see it together. For

  774. the mouth of the Lord has spoken it.

  775. This is introducing not just the death

  776. of Jesus and the resurrection of Jesus,

  777. but the return of Jesus and all of all

  778. of 40 to 66 is comfort.

  779. It's a bigger message than we know.

  780. And of course, Malachi 3:1 is the same

    Malachi 3:1

  781. thing. And Malachi Isaiah 40 is dealing

  782. with sinners that have sinned and are

  783. under judgment for their sins and and

  784. for idolatry and spiritual adultery.

  785. Malachi is dealing not with idolattors,

  786. but formalists.

  787. Oh, what a weariness is it? We're tired

  788. of working in this temple.

  789. People who go through the motions but

  790. are dead.

  791. And the message of Malachi 3:1 is to

    Malachi 3:1

  792. formalists, not idoltors. The message is

  793. not comfort but judgment. The message is

  794. God's coming.

  795. God's coming. Look at Malachi

    Malachi 3 chapter mention

  796. chapter 3 verse one.

  797. So while Isaiah deals with idoltors,

  798. Malachi deals with formalists. Where

  799. Isaiah talks about comfort, Malachi

  800. deals with judgment.

  801. Isaiah was the older prophet. He came

  802. earlier in history. Malachi was the

  803. younger. He was the last. But behold, I

  804. will send my messenger, and he'll

  805. prepare the way before me. And the Lord

  806. whom you seek shall suddenly come to his

  807. temple. Even the messenger of the

  808. covenant whom you delight in. Behold,

  809. he'll come, says the Lord.

  810. So Malachi and Isaiah, their books are

  811. married and they're put together

  812. uh so that we get both pictures.

  813. And so

  814. um let's go back to Mark.

  815. Mark chapter 1, beginning of the gospel

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  816. of Jesus Christ, the son of God. As it

  817. written, behold, I'll send my messenger

  818. before thy face who prepare thy way

  819. before me.

  820. That's Malachi 3:1. The voice of one

    Malachi 3:1

  821. crying in the wilderness, prepare ye the

  822. way of the Lord, make the path straight.

  823. That's Isaiah 40:3.

    Isaiah 40:3

  824. So Malachi 3:1 is the helpmate of Isaiah

    Malachi 3:1 Isaiah 40:3

  825. 40:3.

  826. they're married

  827. and u so may God help us as we come

  828. through this section very important

  829. thing now after he quotes these verses

  830. he refers to John the Baptist he's the

  831. voice in the wilderness he's the priest

  832. that left the temple area could had a

  833. nice life in the temple went out into

  834. the wilderness to pre preach

  835. excommunicated the whole nation

  836. you ever think about what John did.

  837. He had communicated the whole nation.

  838. You're all apostate. You all need to be

  839. saved. That's what he was saying.

  840. None of you are ready.

  841. That's what his baptism was all about.

  842. Calling a nation to repentance who were

  843. formalistic and dead.

  844. He was a priest, the son of a priest. He

  845. could add a respectable ministry, but

  846. that priest became a prophet and lived

  847. on what was it? Honey and forget what

  848. all other stuff he was eating.

  849. >> Yeah. Wasn't doesn't sound very doesn't

  850. sound like a good diet to me, but he

  851. lived on it.

  852. So the gospel that John's talking about

  853. came from someone who was willing who

  854. was an insider

  855. who is willing to become an outsider.

  856. If you're not willing to become an

  857. outsider and you have to be an insider,

  858. you're not going to be a successful

  859. Christian.

  860. What's the book of Hebrews say?

  861. Go outside the camp.

  862. Did you realize when he says that and I

  863. in Hebrews chapter 13 that's something

    Hebrews 13 chapter mention

  864. that's extremely significant. The whole

  865. book of Hebrews is cocking of the pistol

  866. and go outside the camp is when he fires

  867. the gun.

  868. Everything he's writing to those Hebrew

  869. Christians is to tell get outside the

  870. camp.

  871. don't feel you have to be continuing in

  872. that apostate system. And John's got

  873. something very similar. He's totally

  874. upset with the established system.

  875. And he's not going to work within it.

  876. His protest. There's no protest like

  877. getting out. That's the difference

  878. between fundamentalist and new

  879. evangelicals. The new evangelicals,

  880. we're going back in. That was a

  881. disaster.

  882. There's no protest against evil like

  883. going outside the camp.

  884. John went outside the camp. Darby went

  885. outside the camp. Wesley went outside

  886. the camp. Martin Luther went outside the

  887. camp. John Calvin went outside the camp.

  888. Alriwley went outside the camp. The

  889. Puritan fathers kind of went halfway and

  890. halfway. But the pilgrims went outside

  891. the camp.

  892. Uh,

  893. very important stuff to just think

  894. about.

  895. And John is an outside the camp guy. And

  896. when you're baptized by John, you're not

  897. just confessing your sins. You're

  898. confessing that the system that you grew

  899. up in is corrupt and people need to

  900. repent.

  901. So fascinating.

  902. business.

  903. I think it's I think um

  904. I think

  905. I've said this often, not often, but

  906. over the years, I'm pretty sure I could

  907. make double the money if I was a pastor

  908. of a church inside the camp,

  909. a bigger building.

  910. uh if they tolerate me.

  911. But being outside the camp cost you. You

  912. could be inside the camp and have half

  913. the workload and double the salary. What

  914. point is that? God says, "Come out from

  915. among them and be ye separate, says the

  916. Lord."

  917. And so may God help us to just hear John

  918. the Baptist and be willing to go outside

  919. the camp

  920. and be willing to go outside the camp in

  921. such a way that we are not promoting

  922. oursel as holier than thou or better

  923. than you or anything like that.

  924. The whole point of John's baptism was

  925. what? To confess your sins.

  926. to recognize I've got sins that need to

  927. be forgiven.

  928. And there's an emphasis on separation.

  929. He's out in the wilderness. He went 20

  930. miles outside of Jerusalem. Uh and he

  931. was an insider who became an outsider.

  932. He's a priest who became a prophet. He

  933. was a somebody that became a nobody.

  934. He paid the price,

  935. a locust and wild honey. He was no reed

  936. shaken in the wind.

  937. Jesus said, "What went you out to see in

  938. the desert? A reed shaken in the wind?

  939. If if not, what did you go out to see? A

  940. man dressed in fine clothes? Those who

  941. wear fine clothes are in the king's

  942. houses."

  943. But there was a steady stream of people

  944. who came out to see John. A mighty

  945. protest against the apostasy that the

  946. whole nation was involved in. And Jesus

  947. was baptized by John.

  948. Jesus began his ministry

  949. with John's baptism. Jesus identified

  950. with John's message. John identified

  951. with Jesus

  952. by baptizing. And John said, "I need to

  953. be baptized, but you know, let it be so

  954. to fulfill all righteousness." Okay? And

  955. he baptized him. And then the Holy

  956. Spirit came down and all the rest of

  957. that. And a great picture of the Trinid

  958. triune God there. And the father said,

  959. "This is my son in whom I'm well

  960. pleased." God the father was well

  961. pleased with Jesus being baptized by

  962. John.

  963. The water baptism is a public

  964. confession.

  965. And um

  966. Jesus didn't have to any sins to

  967. confess, but he there was a public

  968. entrance into

  969. his ministry by John the Baptist. In

  970. fact, that's really

  971. John was simply preparing a nation to

  972. receive the Messiah. And he knew from

  973. the beginning who he was. Don't you love

  974. John the Baptist when he said, "He must

  975. increase

  976. and must decrease.

  977. He that has the bride

  978. is the bridegroom."

  979. I hope that's our attitude, right? We

  980. don't go outside the camp so we can

  981. promote oursel. We're better than the

  982. people inside the camp. we go outside

  983. the camp so we can promote Jesus and

  984. prepare people for him.

  985. And uh John the Baptist was murdered

  986. because he was against sin.

  987. He was very bold.

  988. His very presence would arouse a sense

  989. of sin in people.

  990. Uh and

  991. he had a consistent message.

  992. Behold the lamb of God

  993. that takes away

  994. the sin

  995. of the world.

  996. So I'm glad that we could just kind of

  997. think through this a little bit. And uh

  998. uh remember what John did in verse 5.

  999. There went out to him all the land of

1000. Judea and the Jerusalem and were all

1001. baptized by him in the river of Jordan

1002. confessing their sins. And John was

  1003. clothed with camel<unk>s hair and a

1004. leather belt about his waist. And he did

1005. eat locust and wild honey and preached,

1006. saying, "There comes one mightier than I

1007. after me, the latchet of whose shoes I'm

1008. not worthy to stoop down and loose. I

1009. indeed have baptized you with water.

1010. He'll baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

1011. And it came to pass in those days Jesus

1012. came from Nazareth of Galilee and was

1013. baptized by John in the Jordan. And

1014. straightway coming up out of the water,

1015. he saw the heavens open and the spirit

1016. like a dove descending upon him. And

1017. there came a voice from heaven, thou art

1018. my beloved son, in whom I am well

  1019. pleased. Um,

1020. may God help us as we think about this

  1021. text.

1022. I I want to look at this not in a

1023. prophetic way or uh but in a prophetic

1024. way, not a nostalgic way.

  1025. Um,

1026. we we believe the Bible not because it's

  1027. old.

1028. We like to look at the old days.

1029. I like to go to Amish country. I enjoy

1030. it up there. I like thinking about way

1031. life was lived in the old days. But we

1032. don't live we don't believe the BL we

1033. want to live in the past. I often tease

1034. my wife and say she asked she asked me a

1035. question. I said, "Well, what did you

  1036. say?" I said, "I'm 2,000 years away. I

1037. got to come back to the year 2026.

1038. I'm back here. Hold on a minute." But uh

1039. uh we we don't want to be nostalgic.

1040. Uh for the Old Testament, I just like to

1041. study what was going on back then.

  1042. Uh John was prophetic.

1043. He had a job to do with people in his

1044. day in his time. And he knew the Old

1045. Testament and he was applying those

1046. prophecies and promises and pictures of

1047. the Lord Jesus. He was evangelistic, not

  1048. legalistic or exclusivistic.

1049. He had a gospel and he proclaimed it. He

  1050. had separation without isolation.

1051. That's important. Separation but not

  1052. isolation.

  1053. And

1054. uh when he confronted legalists, he

  1055. confronted their legalism.

1056. And when he confronted when he's

1057. confronted by opportunist, oh Jesus is

1058. baptizing more people than we are. We're

  1059. jealous of that.

1060. He that has the bride's the bridegroom.

1061. Jesus pointed him away from himself.

1062. When someone pays a price like John pray

1063. paid, it's easy to maybe try to draw

1064. people to yourself as if you're

1065. something. John didn't do that.

1066. Walt Sanders has a name for John. He's

1067. the man who lost his congregation.

1068. He lost him to Jesus.

1069. He pointed everybody to Jesus.

1070. Behold the lamb of God. He didn't point

1071. to himself. Behold the lamb of God that

1072. takes away the sin of the world. Oh be

1073. to us if we ever point people to

1074. ourselves as if we're something.

1075. May we point them to our savior

  1076. because that's our role.

1077. And John's a good example in that. Well,

1078. I hope this has been a little bit of a

1079. challenge to you and a blessing to you.

1080. But how's it relate to the resurrection?

1081. John Jesus was officially recognized

1082. by a prophet who was officially

  1083. recognized

  1084. by God.

1085. And God used the baptism of Jesus by

1086. that prophet to give a verbal

1087. declaration of the identity of Jesus.

1088. And um remember people said

1089. everything John said about him is true.

1090. Better be thinking be we better uh we

  1091. better rethink all this.

1092. And so may God help us not to point to

  1093. ourselves

1094. but to our blessed savior. make a strong

1095. stand, but not in a isolationist or any

1096. kind of proud individualistic way as if

1097. we're better than others, but in a way

1098. that will bring glory to God

1099. and the gospel. Father, we thank you for

1100. some of the things we've looked at from

  1101. John the Baptist.

1102. Just touched touched it a little bit

1103. this morning. Not trying to do a book

1104. study or verse by verse study, but just

1105. think about the fact that Jesus

  1106. entered his public life

1107. being baptized by a public prophet. And

  1108. not just

1109. a public prophet, but one that was more

  1110. than a prophet.

  1111. The forerunner.

1112. the forerunner that Malachi 3:1 and

    Malachi 3:1

  1113. Isaiah 43

  1114. said,

1115. the forerunner of God coming

  1116. to the nation.

1117. So, Father, we thank you for this.

1118. Challenge us by it. Help us to be about

  1119. your business

1120. in proclaiming the resurrection of our

  1121. savior.

1122. And if if we we we're not we can't be

1123. one of the 12 apostles. We can't be one

1124. of the 500, but we can know the Bible

1125. and put it together as it's written so

  1126. that we

  1127. might

  1128. be maybe more effective

  1129. in our ministry

1130. to those that know him not.

1131. We don't just believe anybody was raised

1132. from the dead. We believe Jesus Christ,

1133. the son of David, was raised. We don't

1134. just believe anybody was raised from the

1135. dead. We believe the bridegroom of the

  1136. church,

1137. Messiah of Israel, the God man from

  1138. heaven was raised from

  1139. in Jesus name. Amen.

  1140. >> Amen.

1141. As we go from this place,

1142. loving you more, trusting you more.

1143. May the power of your love and the light

1144. of your word shine to a sin, darkened

1145. world. As we go from this
