  1. It's my joy to preach God's Word to you this morning.

  2. If you are new and you don't know me, my name is Sean.

  3. I'm one of the pastors from Trinity Cambridge Church.

  4. And we are in a series in the book of Revelation.

  5. Revelation is a difficult book.

  6. We're not one of those churches that are overly fascinated with the end times in the book of Revelation.

  7. It just happens to be the book that we are going through.

  8. And all of Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for us.

  9. And so we're in Revelation 8, verse 13, the very last verse of chapter 8.

    Revelation 8:13

  10. And we're going to go all the way through the end of chapter 9.

  11. So if you don't have a Bible, please raise your hand.

  12. We'd love to bring a copy over to you that you could use and you could have.

  13. Revelation is the last book in the Bible.

  14. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  15. Father, we come to you recognizing how much we fall short of your glory.

  16. And we thank you for the opportunity you give us for repentance and faith and salvation.

  17. Lord, I pray for those who do not yet know you,

  18. who have not truly repented of their sins here in this room.

  19. Would you bring them to godly sorrow that leads to true repentance?

  20. And Lord, I pray for those who have repented,

  21. your people,

  22. those who are sealed with the Spirit of God who are here this morning.

  23. Would you encourage them and assure them of your protection,

  24. your,

  25. of how they have their identity in you

  26. so that they need not fear

  27. the great tribulation

  28. and the judgments

  29. that you will bring.

  30. And remind us, Lord, most of all,

  31. of Christ

  32. and the work that he has done for us

  33. to save us from

  34. these dire judgments

  35. that we will read about today.

  36. Speak to us as you always do, God,

  37. from your Word.

  38. In Jesus' name we pray.

  39. Amen.

  40. Please stand for the reading of God's Word

  41. from Revelation.

  42. Starting in chapter 8, verse 13.

  43. Amen.

  44. Amen.

  45. Amen.

  46. Then I looked and I heard an eagle

  47. crying with a loud voice

  48. as it flew directly overhead.

  49. Woe, woe, woe

  50. to those who dwell on the earth

  51. at the blasts of the other trumpets

  52. that the three angels are about to blow.

  53. And the fifth angel blew his trumpet

  54. and I saw a star fallen from heaven to earth

  55. and he was given the key

  56. to the shaft of the bottomless pit.

  57. He opened the shaft of the bottomless pit

  58. and from the shaft rose smoke

  59. like the smoke of a great furnace

  60. and the sun and the air

  61. were darkened with the smoke from the shaft.

  62. Then from the smoke came locusts on the earth

  63. and they were given power

  64. like the power of scorpions of the earth.

  65. They were told not to harm the grass of the earth

  66. or any green plant or any tree

  67. but only those people

  68. who do not have the seal of God

  69. on their foreheads.

  70. They were allowed to torment them

  71. for five months

  72. but not to kill them.

  73. And their torment was like

  74. the torment of a scorpion

  75. when it stings someone.

  76. And in those days

  77. people will seek death

  78. and will not find it.

  79. They will long to die

  80. but death will flee from them.

  81. In appearance

  82. the locusts were like horses

  83. prepared for battle.

  84. On their heads

  85. were what looked like crowns of gold.

  86. Their faces were like human faces.

  87. Their hair like woman's hair.

  88. And their teeth like lion's teeth.

  89. They had breastplates

  90. like breastplates of iron.

  91. And the noise of their wings

  92. was like the noise

  93. of many chariots

  94. with horses rushing into battle.

  95. They have tails

  96. and stings like scorpions.

  97. And their power to hurt people

  98. for five months

  99. is in their tails.

  100. They have as king over them

  101. the angel of the bottomless pit.

  102. His name in Hebrew

  103. is Abaddon.

  104. And in Greek

  105. he is called Apollyon.

  106. The first woe has passed.

  107. Behold,

  108. two woes are still to come.

  109. Then the sixth angel

  110. blew his trumpet

  111. and I heard a voice

  112. from the four horns

  113. of the golden altar

  114. before God

  115. saying to the sixth angel

  116. who had the trumpet,

  117. Release the four angels

  118. who are bound

  119. at the great river Euphrates.

  120. So the four angels

  121. who had been prepared

  122. for the hour,

  123. the day,

  124. the month,

  125. and the year

  126. were released

  127. to kill a third of mankind.

  128. The number of mounted troops

  129. was twice 10,000

  130. times 10,000.

  131. I heard their number

  132. and this is how I saw

  133. the horses in my vision

  134. and those who rode them.

  135. They wore breastplates

  136. the color of fire

  137. and of sapphire

  138. and of sulfur

  139. and the heads of the horses

  140. were like lion's heads

  141. and fire and smoke

  142. and sulfur

  143. came out of their mouths.

  144. By these three plagues

  145. a third of mankind

  146. was killed

  147. by the fire and smoke

  148. and sulfur

  149. coming out of their mouths.

  150. For the power of the horses

  151. in their mouths

  152. and in their tails,

  153. for their tails

  154. are like serpents

  155. with heads

  156. and by means of them

  157. they wound.

  158. The rest of mankind

  159. who were not killed

  160. by these plagues

  161. did not repent

  162. of the works

  163. of their hands

  164. nor give up

  165. worshiping demons

  166. and idols of gold

  167. and silver

  168. and bronze

  169. and stone and wood

  170. which cannot see

  171. or hear or walk

  172. nor did they repent

  173. of their murders

  174. or their sorceries

  175. or their sexual immorality

  176. or their thefts.

  177. This is God's holy

  178. and authoritative word.

  179. You may be seated

  180. this time.

  181. In his famous

  182. Sermon on the Mount

  183. Jesus gives us

  184. a list of beatitudes

  185. or the series

  186. of blessed statements.

  187. Blessed are they

  188. or happy are they

  189. who are poor in spirit

  190. for theirs is the kingdom of them.

  191. Happy are those who mourn

  192. for they will be comforted.

  193. Happy are the meek

  194. for they will inherit the earth.

  195. Happy are those

  196. who hunger and thirst

  197. for righteousness

  198. for they will be filled.

  199. Happy are the peacemakers

  200. for they shall be called

  201. sons of God.

  202. Happy are those

  203. who are persecuted

  204. for righteousness sake

  205. for theirs is the kingdom

  206. of heaven.

  207. Happy are you

  208. when they revile you.

  209. Others revile you

  210. and persecute you

  211. and falsely say

  212. all kinds of evil

  213. against you

  214. because of me

  215. for in the same way

  216. they treated the prophets

  217. who were before you.

  218. but sometimes

  219. as we live in this world

  220. Christians

  221. have a hard time

  222. believing

  223. that these beatitudes

  224. are actually true.

  225. Sometimes it seems happier

  226. in this sinful world

  227. to be rich

  228. and proud in spirit

  229. rather than poor in spirit.

  230. To laugh

  231. rather than to mourn.

  232. To be pushy

  233. rather than meek.

  234. To be full

  235. and self-righteous

  236. rather than hungering

  237. and thirsting

  238. for righteousness.

  239. To be fighters

  240. rather than peacemakers.

  241. To be praised

  242. and admired

  243. rather than

  244. to be reviled

  245. and persecuted

  246. for Jesus' sake.

  247. Have you ever felt

  248. that way before?

  249. And if you've been tempted

  250. to think in these ways before

  251. that temptation

  252. is from our enemy

  253. Satan

  254. who lies

  255. and hides

  256. the true spiritual reality

  257. of things.

  258. We know from

  259. 2 Corinthians 11

  260. 11 and 14

  261. that even Satan

  262. disguises himself

  263. as an angel

  264. of light

  265. which is where we get

  266. the name Lucifer

  267. which means

  268. bearer of light.

  269. It also comes from

  270. Isaiah 14 12

  271. which says

  272. that the day star

  273. which is a reference

  274. to an angel

  275. was fallen.

  276. But he's only

  277. a counterfeit.

  278. He's not the true

  279. day star.

  280. He's not the true

  281. morning star.

  282. He's not the true

  283. angel of light.

  284. Revelation 9

  285. says in Revelation 22

  286. 16 rather

  287. that Jesus

  288. is the true

  289. bright morning star.

  290. So Satan

  291. is only a counterfeit

  292. in imitation

  293. a cheap imitation

  294. that seeks to deceive

  295. people

  296. and lead them astray.

  297. Revelation 9

  298. the passage we're in today

  299. unmasks

  300. the hideous reality

  301. the evil reality

  302. behind Satan

  303. and his lies

  304. and his temptations

  305. with the purpose

  306. of showing

  307. deleting sinners

  308. showing sinners

  309. the true reality

  310. of things

  311. so that they would

  312. repent of their

  313. worship of demons

  314. and idols.

  315. And so the main

  316. point of this passage

  317. is this

  318. in light of God's

  319. judgments

  320. on those who

  321. worship demons

  322. we should repent

  323. of our idolatry

  324. and worship

  325. the true God.

  326. That's the main

  327. point of our passage.

  328. First we're going

  329. to talk about

  330. woe number one

  331. the demonic

  332. tormenting locusts

  333. and secondly

  334. we're going to talk

  335. about woe number two

  336. the demonic

  337. killing cavalry.

  338. After the first

  339. four trumpets

  340. which we looked at

  341. last week

  342. we get a brief

  343. intermission here

  344. in verse 13

  345. like the seven seals

  346. which were grouped

  347. into four and three

  348. the four horsemen

  349. of the apocalypse

  350. and then the three

  351. last seals

  352. here there's

  353. an arrangement

  354. of four

  355. plus three

  356. pattern again

  357. the four

  358. judgment trumpets

  359. that affect

  360. the creation

  361. it's showing

  362. kind of

  363. the creation

  364. of the world

  365. and then the last

  366. three woes

  367. that affect

  368. people more

  369. directly

  370. and

  371. and then

  372. this structure

  373. is intended

  374. to show

  375. the escalation

  376. it sets apart

  377. the last three

  378. to show

  379. that there's

  380. a greater

  381. severity

  382. to them

  383. so these

  384. three woes

  385. are going

  386. to be worse

  387. than the four

  388. trumpets

  389. that we saw

  390. last week

  391. it says

  392. in verse 13

  393. then I looked

  394. and I heard

  395. an eagle

  396. crying

  397. with a loud

  398. voice

  399. as it flew

  400. directly overhead

  401. woe

  402. woe

  403. woe

  404. to those

  405. who dwell

  406. on the earth

  407. at the blast

  408. of the other

  409. trumpets

  410. that the three

  411. angels

  412. are about

  413. to blow

  414. an eagle

  415. flying overhead

  416. is a picture

  417. of a predator

  418. hovering over

  419. its prey

  420. immediately

  421. before it

  422. dives in

  423. for the kill

  424. later in

  425. revelation 19

  426. the birds

  427. that fly

  428. directly

  429. overhead

  430. are those

  431. who will

  432. eat the

  433. flesh

  434. of kings

  435. who have

  436. rebelled

  437. against

  438. christ

  439. and so

  440. this is a

  441. majestic

  442. yet foreboding

  443. picture

  444. and this eagle

  445. pronounces a

  446. threefold

  447. woe

  448. when you

  449. rebel against

  450. and sin

  451. and refuse

  452. to repent

  453. toward a god

  454. who is

  455. thrice holy

  456. that we saw

  457. in revelation 4

  458. holy

  459. holy

  460. holy

  461. the only fate

  462. that is fitting

  463. for you

  464. is a threefold

  465. woe

  466. woe

  467. woe

  468. woe

  469. a more modern

  470. translation

  471. would have it

  472. doom

  473. doom

  474. doom

  475. but before I jump

  476. into the woes

  477. I want to add

  478. a bit more context

  479. and structure

  480. to what I shared

  481. with you last week

  482. going through the first

  483. four trumpets

  484. I suggested to you

  485. both the literal

  486. and symbolic

  487. meanings

  488. possible meanings

  489. of the trumpet

  490. judgments

  491. and shared my

  492. preference for

  493. the symbolic meaning

  494. but also told you

  495. that I might be

  496. wrong about

  497. that

  498. it's possible

  499. that the more

  500. literal meaning

  501. of the four trumpets

  502. are in view

  503. and if that's the case

  504. then the trumpet

  505. judgments clearly

  506. haven't happened yet

  507. and in that case

  508. while the seven seals

  509. deal with the entire

  510. church age

  511. the seven seals

  512. the first seven seals

  513. we saw

  514. in chapter 6

  515. deal with the entire

  516. church age

  517. from the first coming

  518. of Christ

  519. to the second coming

  520. of Christ

  521. the seven trumpets

  522. and the seven bowls

  523. then would deal

  524. more narrowly

  525. with the end

  526. of the end times

  527. toward the

  528. what would be

  529. the sixth

  530. and the seventh seals

  531. I hope you guys

  532. follow what I'm saying

  533. if you guys

  534. are just coming in

  535. for the first sermon

  536. this probably doesn't

  537. make any sense to you

  538. I'm sorry about that

  539. and this would fit in well

  540. with the fact

  541. that the trumpet judgments

  542. were God's answer

  543. to the martyred Christian's

  544. prayer for vindication

  545. of God's judgment

  546. in the fifth seal

  547. and then you saw

  548. the final climactic judgments

  549. in the sixth

  550. and seventh seals

  551. and so it's possible

  552. that all seven trumpets

  553. and all seven bowls

  554. line up with those

  555. two last seals

  556. if these are meant

  557. to be fulfilled

  558. more literally

  559. this would also fit well

  560. with the fact

  561. that the seven trumpets

  562. and the seven bowls

  563. line up

  564. almost exactly

  565. they're very parallel

  566. the first trumpet

  567. and the first bowl

  568. both affect the earth

  569. the second trumpet

  570. and the second bowl

  571. both affect the sea

  572. the third trumpet

  573. and the third bowl

  574. both affect the rivers

  575. and the springs

  576. the fourth trumpet

  577. and the fourth bowl

  578. both affect the sky

  579. or the sun

  580. and the heavenly bodies

  581. and then

  582. the fifth trumpet

  583. and the fifth bowl

  584. both involve demons

  585. who cause anguish

  586. or torment

  587. and then the sixth trumpet

  588. and the sixth bowl

  589. both involve demonic forces that originate from the Euphrates.

  590. So if they're all parallel and they're all referring to the end of the end,

  591. it's possible that these things are going to happen in the future.

  592. And if it's happening in the future and it's not already happening or has already happened,

  593. then the literal interpretation is more plausible in that case.

  594. So it's possible.

  595. Honestly, there's so many different views points on this,

  596. but I think these two that I'm presenting to you are probably the most likely.

  597. I encourage you not to search on YouTube or Internet for the meaning of the book of Revelation

  598. because I think maybe 90% or more of the stuff you're going to find is really not very helpful and not very biblical.

  599. And so I would caution you against that.

  600. It seems like almost everybody has an opinion about it.

  601. And they think that they should publish their opinion online.

  602. And I would encourage you to just search the scriptures carefully.

  603. Read the book of Revelation over and over again.

  604. Look at the Old Testament prophecies that are referenced in the book of Revelation again and again.

  605. And that's the best way you're going to arrive at the right understanding of this book.

  606. So if it's possible that the fifth trumpet and sixth trumpet are stuff that's going to happen in the future

  607. or it's something that's going to happen.

  608. Or the fifth trumpet at least is something that's happening already.

  609. I'll preach with both of those things in mind.

  610. Let's jump into the woes.

  611. We'll cover only the first two woes today because the last woe doesn't take place until later.

  612. But just keep in mind that there's three woes total, which are the last three of the trumpets, of the seven trumpets.

  613. The first woe is the fifth trumpet.

  614. And when it's blown, John sees a star fallen from heaven to earth.

  615. I mentioned to you last week that a fallen star likely represents a fallen angel.

  616. In chapter 8, verse 10.

  617. Moreover, we saw in Revelation 1.20 that the seven stars that Jesus holds in his right hand,

  618. we were told explicitly that they represent seven angels.

  619. And in Luke 10.18, due to the proclamation of the kingdom of God by his disciples,

  620. Jesus says that I saw Satan fall like lightning from the sky.

  621. So it's this idea of a star, something like a star falling from heaven to represent demonic spirits where Satan is not uncommon.

  622. That's why Satan is called a fallen angel.

  623. Here in Revelation 9, the connection between a fallen star and a fallen angel is even more clear and certain

  624. because it says in verse 1, right after telling us that a star fell from heaven,

  625. and he, personal pronoun, he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit.

  626. So this star is no mere self-luminous celestial body of gas.

  627. This star has personal agency.

  628. This star receives the key and then opens the shaft of the bottomless pit in verse 2.

  629. In fact, this star that has the key to the bottomless pit is explicitly described in verse 11,

  630. a few verses down, as the angel of the bottomless pit,

  631. who is king over the demonic locusts that we'll read about in a minute.

  632. And this angel, like Wormwood, has a name.

  633. This one is called Abaddon in Hebrew,

  634. and Apollyon in Greek.

  635. They both mean destruction or destroyer.

  636. Abaddon is often parallel to death or the grave in the Old Testament,

  637. and Apollyon is referenced to the destroyer, the thief,

  638. that comes only to steal and kill and destroy, as Jesus said to describe the devil in John 10.

  639. They're both an allusion going back all the way to Exodus, Exodus 12.23,

  640. when the destroyer, God sends a destroyer to go throughout Egypt during the Passover

  641. to kill the firstborn sons or the males of all of the Egyptian households

  642. and all Egyptian animals that were not protected by the seal of God,

  643. the blood of the Lamb.

  644. And so it's a reference to that destroyer,

  645. and that parallel is very suggestive because here, in verse 4,

  646. the locusts, the demonic locusts that come out of this,

  647. are explicitly forbidden from harming those who have the seal of God on their foreheads.

  648. So it's reminiscent of the Exodus plague,

  649. with the striking down of the firstborns.

  650. I think it's likely that this fallen angel is nothing less than Satan himself,

  651. the great dragon, the ancient serpent, which we'll see later.

  652. He is thrown down from heaven to earth along with his angels, Revelation 12.9.

  653. I think that's what this is depicting in another way.

  654. This is confirmed by the fact that he has domain.

  655. This is his domain.

  656. He has key and authority over the abyss.

  657. It's the bottomless pit.

  658. This pit is so low underground, so to speak, that it's bottomless.

  659. It's not like going down into our basements.

  660. It's connected by a shaft because it goes down so low by a long pole,

  661. and it's called the abyss.

  662. It's the realm of demons.

  663. Some people think that this is literally underground.

  664. I mean, it's not impossible.

  665. I don't know how scientists or geophysicists know this,

  666. but they do say that if you go down to the,

  667. to drill down to the core of the earth,

  668. it's like the size of the moon.

  669. It's basically a fireball that's hotter than the surface of the sun,

  670. and it's made up mostly of iron or whatever.

  671. I mean, I suppose that's possible.

  672. It would fit the description,

  673. but I think it's just as well.

  674. It could be symbolic,

  675. but it's a bad place.

  676. You don't want to have anything to do with.

  677. And you're not going to find this in your,

  678. the English version of the Bibles,

  679. because the book of Job in our English translation

  680. is taken from the Hebrew version

  681. and not the ancient Greek version,

  682. but the Greek translation of Job in the Septuagint,

  683. Job 41, 23 to 24,

  684. this abyss is described as where Leviathan,

  685. the Leviathan, the cosmic sea dragon,

  686. the serpent,

  687. who has the appearance of the morning star,

  688. again reminiscent of the language of Lucifer,

  689. the day star,

  690. who is, quote,

  691. king of all in his realm is said to live.

  692. And it's said that this ancient dragon

  693. considers the Tartarus of the abyss as his captive.

  694. In Greek mythology,

  695. Tartarus is the deep dungeon prison for the Titans,

  696. in 2 Peter 2, 4,

  697. we are told that God took the angels who sinned

  698. and cast them into hell

  699. and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness

  700. to be kept until the judgment.

  701. That phrase, cast them into hell,

  702. is actually cast them into Tartarus,

  703. literally in Greek.

  704. This is not the eternal fire prepared for the devil

  705. and his minions and all those who follow them

  706. in Matthew,

  707. that Jesus mentions in Matthew 25, 41.

  708. It's not the lake of fire

  709. that Revelation 20 mentions,

  710. which is the final destination

  711. of the dragon and the beast

  712. and the false prophet

  713. and all those who follow him instead of Christ.

  714. So this is not that final destination.

  715. Rather, it's the temporary place of incarceration,

  716. where the evil spirits who had sinned,

  717. or demons,

  718. angels who had sinned,

  719. transgressed their boundaries,

  720. as Jude 1, 6 speaks of,

  721. probably alluding to Genesis 6,

  722. are imprisoned at the moment.

  723. And in Luke 8, 31,

  724. this abyss is mentioned again.

  725. This is where you encounter the demon region.

  726. A man gathering demoniac

  727. is possessed by a demon named region.

  728. And then when Jesus is about to cast the demon out,

  729. he begs Jesus,

  730. please don't send me into the abyss.

  731. The bottomless pit

  732. that even demons fear to go to.

  733. But even here,

  734. we see that the ultimate sovereignty

  735. lies with our Lord Jesus Christ

  736. and not with Satan,

  737. who receives this key.

  738. Look at the phrasing of verse 1.

  739. He was given the key

  740. to the shaft of the bottomless pit.

  741. This is the divine passive construction

  742. that indicates that

  743. while God is never the direct actor in evil,

  744. he is nonetheless completely sovereign over evil.

  745. We were told in Revelation 1, 17 to 18,

  746. who ultimately holds this key,

  747. remember that?

  748. Jesus said,

  749. Fear not,

  750. I am the first and the last

  751. and the living one.

  752. I died,

  753. and behold,

  754. I am alive forevermore,

  755. and I have the keys.

  756. Jesus,

  757. Jesus,

  758. the Son of God,

  759. is the one person in human history

  760. who did not have to die,

  761. but he died for the sins,

  762. for our sins,

  763. to save people

  764. and to save the world,

  765. and so all who repent of their sins

  766. and trust in him might be saved.

  767. But because he died

  768. and because he was raised from the dead

  769. and he was the one person

  770. in the history of humanity

  771. who has ever defeated death

  772. in that way,

  773. he is the one who ultimately

  774. holds the keys of death and Hades.

  775. Now,

  776. he decides

  777. when to open

  778. and when to close.

  779. He decides

  780. when he gives life,

  781. when he takes life.

  782. And so,

  783. even though this fearsome demon

  784. receives authority,

  785. he only receives authority.

  786. He's given the key

  787. from the one who has ultimate dominion,

  788. that is Christ.

  789. Satan is king

  790. over his demonic domain.

  791. He is described as a prince

  792. of this sinful world.

  793. However,

  794. in relation to King Jesus,

  795. as you see here,

  796. he's nothing but a lackey,

  797. a warden,

  798. a servant warden.

  799. It's like basically

  800. a prison guard here.

  801. That's how gloriously powerful

  802. and sovereign

  803. our Lord Jesus is.

  804. Satan,

  805. remember that.

  806. Satan is only a counterfeit

  807. morning star,

  808. a counterfeit

  809. king.

  810. Jesus is the true

  811. and genuine one,

  812. the amen,

  813. the faithful

  814. and true witness.

  815. And yet,

  816. so many people

  817. in our world

  818. are serving this

  819. ancient serpent

  820. who rules over

  821. this bottomless pit

  822. instead of serving

  823. Jesus,

  824. the Lord of life,

  825. who is exalted

  826. far above the heavens.

  827. Which king

  828. do you want to serve?

  829. The prison guard

  830. over the bottomless pit

  831. or the one who reigns

  832. at the right hand

  833. of the Father?

  834. The first woe unmasks

  835. the grotesque

  836. and macabre reality

  837. of the demonic forces

  838. so that people

  839. who dwell on the earth

  840. might be awakened

  841. from Satan's deception

  842. and see the truth,

  843. the light of the gospel

  844. of Jesus Christ.

  845. Let's look a little

  846. more closely

  847. at the grisly picture

  848. of the demons

  849. in the following verses.

  850. When the fallen angel

  851. opens the shaft

  852. of the bottomless pit,

  853. smoke like the smoke

  854. of a great furnace

  855. rises from the shaft

  856. and darkens the air

  857. and the sun.

  858. So imagine

  859. if something is enough

  860. to darken the sun,

  861. it's not this kind of

  862. transparent mist-like thing.

  863. It's a thick,

  864. dark plumage

  865. of smoke

  866. like the kind

  867. that erupts

  868. from a volcano.

  869. There's so much of it.

  870. And then out of that smoke

  871. emerges,

  872. it says,

  873. locusts on the earth

  874. and they were given power

  875. like the power

  876. of scorpions

  877. of the earth.

  878. This is an obvious

  879. allusion

  880. to the Exodus,

  881. like the eighth plague

  882. of Egypt

  883. in Exodus 10

  884. where a dense swarm

  885. of locusts

  886. came from the east

  887. and covered all

  888. of Egypt

  889. so that the land

  890. was darkened.

  891. Again,

  892. that's another parallel.

  893. And it says

  894. that they ate

  895. all the plants

  896. in the land

  897. and all the fruit

  898. of the trees

  899. that the hail

  900. had left

  901. so that not a green

  902. thing remained

  903. in all of Egypt

  904. except for where

  905. God's people,

  906. the Israelites,

  907. lived.

  908. We're so far

  909. living here

  910. in Boston.

  911. We're so far

  912. removed from locusts.

  913. I don't even know

  914. if you guys

  915. have even seen

  916. a locust.

  917. I don't know

  918. that I've seen

  919. a locust.

  920. I've seen grasshoppers.

  921. And it's hard

  922. to imagine

  923. how devastating

  924. they can be

  925. but we're more

  926. bothered by pests

  927. like rats here.

  928. But desert locusts

  929. are often called

  930. the world's

  931. most devastating

  932. pests

  933. for a reason.

  934. When locusts

  935. begin to form swarms,

  936. they say that

  937. they multiply

  938. twentyfold

  939. in three months.

  940. Imagine their population

  941. growing twentyfold

  942. in three months.

  943. And they can reach

  944. densities of

  945. thirty-one million

  946. locusts

  947. per square mile.

  948. And they could

  949. occupy many square miles.

  950. So imagine

  951. what that's like

  952. if they covered

  953. like, you know,

  954. let's say even

  955. they covered

  956. their swarm

  957. of eighty million

  958. locusts

  959. covering maybe

  960. three or

  961. three square miles

  962. or so.

  963. They can consume

  964. the food equivalent

  965. of about

  966. thirty-five thousand

  967. people.

  968. What thirty-five thousand

  969. people will eat

  970. on any given day.

  971. They could eat that

  972. on a single day.

  973. So you imagine

  974. that kind of swarm

  975. going through

  976. your farmland.

  977. There's nothing left.

  978. That's how devastating

  979. and dreadful,

  980. how dreaded

  981. these locust swarms

  982. were in that part

  983. of the world.

  984. And so that's

  985. what you should see,

  986. what you should feel

  987. when you hear locusts.

  988. Once again,

  989. the key difference

  990. here is that

  991. these locusts

  992. are primarily,

  993. I think,

  994. symbolic.

  995. I think

  996. that's why,

  997. I mean,

  998. in 2020,

  999. there were locust swarms

  1000. in East Africa

  1001. that were so bad

  1002. that the BBC

  1003. called them

  1004. the biblical

  1005. locust plagues

  1006. of 2020.

  1007. I'm sure

  1008. some people

  1009. were crying out

  1010. that this is

  1011. a fulfillment

  1012. of the revelation,

  1013. but I just

  1014. don't think so

  1015. because these

  1016. are demonic locusts.

  1017. These are not,

  1018. those are real locusts

  1019. that eat plants.

  1020. And these locusts

  1021. are not interested

  1022. in plants at all.

  1023. Revelation 9, 45,

  1024. it says specifically

  1025. that these locusts

  1026. were told

  1027. not to harm

1028. the grass of the earth

  1029. or any green plant

  1030. or any tree,

  1031. but only those people

  1032. who do not have

  1033. the seal of God

  1034. on their foreheads.

  1035. They were allowed

  1036. to torment them

  1037. for five months,

1038. but not to kill them.

  1039. So these locusts

  1040. are not interested

  1041. in green things

  1042. at all.

  1043. They're just interested

  1044. in people

  1045. and in particularly

  1046. people who have

  1047. not been sealed

1048. with the name of God.

  1049. Moreover,

  1050. another remarkable thing

  1051. about locusts

  1052. that we know

  1053. from Proverbs 30, 27

  1054. is that locusts

  1055. have no king,

  1056. yet all of them

  1057. march in rank.

  1058. But we are told

  1059. here in Revelation 9, 11

  1060. that these locusts

  1061. have a king.

1062. They have as their king

  1063. an angel

  1064. of the bottomless pits.

  1065. These are not

  1066. literal locusts.

  1067. We can also tell

  1068. that these locusts

  1069. are symbolic

  1070. from the composite imagery.

1071. And notice just how many times

  1072. the word like

  1073. is used

  1074. in the description

  1075. of these locusts.

  1076. Verse 3,

  1077. they were given power

  1078. like the power

  1079. of scorpions

  1080. of the earth.

  1081. Verse 5,

  1082. their torment

  1083. was like the torment

  1084. of a scorpion

  1085. when it stings someone.

  1086. Verse 7,

  1087. in appearance

  1088. the locusts

  1089. were like horses

  1090. prepared for battle.

  1091. On their heads

  1092. were what looked

  1093. like crowns of gold.

  1094. Their faces

  1095. were like human faces.

  1096. Verse 8,

  1097. their hair is like

  1098. woman's hair

  1099. and their teeth

  1100. like lion's teeth.

  1101. In verse 9,

  1102. they had breastplates

  1103. like breastplates

  1104. of iron

  1105. and the noise

  1106. of their wings

  1107. was like the noise

  1108. of many chariots

  1109. with horses

  1110. rushing into battle.

  1111. Like, like, like, like.

  1112. These are similes.

  1113. This is the language

  1114. of figurative comparison.

  1115. John's doing his best

  1116. to describe

  1117. what he saw

  1118. in his vision.

  1119. He's not telling us

  1120. exactly what it is.

  1121. He's just describing them.

  1122. It's a picture

  1123. for us to imagine.

  1124. And they are representative

  1125. of the thing

  1126. that's behind it,

  1127. the substance

  1128. that's behind it.

  1129. And because these

  1130. are demonic,

  1131. clearly,

  1132. I don't think,

  1133. as some people

  1134. have claimed,

  1135. that these locusts

  1136. are a description

  1137. of the Apache helicopter

  1138. or some other

  1139. modern warfare

  1140. contraption

  1141. that's going to come

  1142. as a whore

  1143. to attack people

  1144. or whatever.

  1145. You know,

  1146. I don't think

  1147. that's the case.

  1148. You know,

  1149. it's a composite picture

  1150. of what demons

  1151. are like.

  1152. And this description

  1153. of their appearance

  1154. exaggerates

  1155. various aspects

  1156. of the locusts

  1157. to make them look

  1158. as hideous

  1159. as possible.

  1160. Instead of these,

  1161. like, regular

  1162. things that,

  1163. you know,

1164. stick out of their mouths

  1165. like you've seen locusts,

  1166. they have lion's fans

  1167. right there.

  1168. Can you imagine

  1169. what they can do

  1170. with that?

  1171. How much more

  1172. they can eat,

  1173. chew down with that?

  1174. And they,

  1175. like,

  1176. normally they have scales,

  1177. called,

  1178. like,

  1179. their thoraxes

  1180. look like scaled armor,

  1181. but they actually

  1182. have breastplate

  1183. of iron.

1184. That's what that looks like.

  1185. These are, like,

  1186. these are locusts

  1187. on demonic steroids.

  1188. And they appear,

  1189. like,

  1190. their sound is like

  1191. rumbling of chariots,

  1192. like a powerful army.

1193. And most of this image

  1194. is taken,

  1195. actually,

  1196. from Joel 1, 2,

  1197. which describes

1198. the day of the Lord,

1199. day of the Lord's judgment

  1200. when a locust-like army

  1201. will come.

  1202. It says,

  1203. and then,

  1204. and they're described

  1205. as having lion's teeth.

  1206. Their appearance

  1207. is like the appearance

  1208. of horses.

1209. And like the war horses,

  1210. they run,

  1211. as with the rumbling

  1212. of chariots,

  1213. like a powerful army,

  1214. it says in Joel 1, 6.

  1215. So,

  1216. but here,

  1217. I don't think

  1218. it's a physical army,

  1219. but a spiritual,

  1220. demonic one.

  1221. And so,

  1222. whenever you're tempted

  1223. by the seductive power

  1224. of the enemy,

  1225. whenever you're looking

  1226. at sin

  1227. and saying,

  1228. oh, man,

  1229. that looks really good.

  1230. That,

  1231. that looks like

  1232. a really happy lifestyle.

  1233. That,

  1234. that looks blessed.

  1235. You look at

  1236. the enemy's temptations,

1237. then that's what you feel.

  1238. Imagine these hideous,

  1239. demonic locusts.

  1240. That's what you're dealing with.

  1241. Not some pleasant sweets.

  1242. Do you want anything

1243. to do with these creatures?

  1244. Of course we don't.

  1245. Three times,

  1246. in verses 3, 5, and 10,

  1247. we are told that

  1248. these locusts

1249. wield the power of scorpions.

  1250. Scorpion's sting

  1251. is an apt comparison

  1252. because their sting

  1253. is intensely painful,

1254. but they are rarely fatal.

1255. I hear that the scorpions

  1256. in the Middle East,

  1257. their stings

  1258. are even more painful

  1259. than the small kinds

  1260. you see in Arizona

  1261. and different places.

  1262. And,

1263. but they're still not lethal.

  1264. And so,

  1265. it really fits well

  1266. with this,

  1267. the limitation

  1268. that God has placed

  1269. on them,

  1270. that they're not allowed

  1271. to kill

  1272. but only to torment.

  1273. And they're limited

  1274. for a five-month period.

  1275. And like most numbers

  1276. in Revelation,

  1277. that's probably also

  1278. a symbolic number.

  1279. But it's a symbolic number

  1280. that's readily available

  1281. because locusts,

  1282. their lifespan

  1283. is normally five months.

  1284. That's usually

  1285. how long locust swarms

  1286. stay around.

  1287. And then they,

  1288. I don't know if that's

  1289. their entire lifespan

  1290. or not.

1291. But even during those five months,

  1292. they would normally

  1293. only consume

1294. for short periods of that.

  1295. But these demonic locusts

  1296. are active

  1297. for the entire

  1298. five-month season.

  1299. And,

  1300. God has sovereignly

  1301. put boundaries

  1302. around the extent

  1303. and the duration

  1304. and the object

  1305. of their demonic activity.

  1306. As I've hinted already,

  1307. their extent is limited

1308. in that they can only torment

  1309. but not kill.

  1310. Their duration is limited

1311. in that they can only torment

  1312. for five months.

  1313. So,

  1314. at least it's not

1315. for an indefinite period of time.

  1316. There's a limit to it.

  1317. It's going to end

  1318. at some point.

  1319. Their object

  1320. is limited

  1321. in that they cannot

  1322. torment those

  1323. who have the seal

  1324. of God

  1325. on their foreheads.

  1326. This is hearkening

  1327. back to chapter 7

  1328. where the 144,000

  1329. representing

  1330. the true Israel,

  1331. the full number

  1332. of God's elect people

  1333. were sealed

  1334. with the name

  1335. of the living God

1336. so that they can be

  1337. identified as belonging

  1338. to God

1339. and so that they can be

  1340. protected,

  1341. spiritually protected

  1342. from these ensuing judgments.

  1343. So,

1344. this is not a physical seal

  1345. that you write

  1346. with a sharpie

  1347. or it's not

  1348. a computer chip

  1349. that someone's

  1350. going to put

  1351. inside your body.

1352. This is a spiritual seal,

1353. the name of the living God

  1354. and it's written

  1355. upon our souls

  1356. as Christians

  1357. by the Holy Spirit

1358. and those who do not

  1359. have the seal

  1360. of the living God

  1361. are sealed

  1362. instead

  1363. with the name

  1364. of Satan's beast

  1365. in Revelation 13, 17

  1366. and these unbelievers

  1367. who are then

  1368. tormented

  1369. by these demon locusts

1370. and there's no middle ground,

  1371. there's a neutral ground.

  1372. You're either taking

1373. the mark of the beast

  1374. or you're taking

  1375. the seal

  1376. of the name

  1377. of the living God

  1378. and Jesus Christ.

  1379. Notice the striking parallels

  1380. with this passage

  1381. in Luke 10, 18-20

1382. which I already referenced earlier.

1383. Jesus said to his disciples,

  1384. I saw Satan fall

  1385. like lightning

  1386. from heaven.

  1387. Behold,

  1388. I've given you authority

  1389. to tread on serpents

  1390. and scorpions

  1391. and over all

  1392. the power

  1393. of the enemy

  1394. and nothing

  1395. shall hurt you.

  1396. Nevertheless,

  1397. do not rejoice

  1398. in this

  1399. that the spirits

  1400. are subject to you

  1401. but rejoice

  1402. that your names

  1403. are written

  1404. in heaven.

  1405. So here,

  1406. Jesus is explaining

  1407. having authority

  1408. over serpents

  1409. and scorpions

  1410. as having power

  1411. over the enemy.

  1412. Having authority

  1413. over all the powers

  1414. of the enemy.

  1415. So scorpions

  1416. and serpents

  1417. are symbols

  1418. of evil

  1419. because they cause

  1420. so much pain.

  1421. And so this is,

1422. I think this is what

1423. John is referring to here

  1424. in using that image

  1425. in this vision.

  1426. And so over,

  1427. this is,

  1428. if you are then

  1429. hurt by scorpions,

  1430. I think most likely

  1431. that it's referring

  1432. in the symbolic sense

  1433. to the spiritual torment

  1434. that the enemy,

1435. the powers of the enemy

  1436. inflict upon those

  1437. who do not know

  1438. the Lord

1439. and those who have not

  1440. been sealed

1441. with the name of God.

  1442. If this is,

  1443. if this is,

  1444. lies in the future

  1445. and has yet

  1446. to be fulfilled,

  1447. I mean,

  1448. it's also possible

  1449. that there will be

  1450. a physical torment

  1451. inflicted by these demons.

  1452. But it's something

  1453. that believers

  1454. will be protected from.

  1455. And that's really ironic

1456. if you think about it.

  1457. You think that,

  1458. I mean,

  1459. who are,

  1460. who's,

  1461. who's Satan against?

  1462. Satan's against God.

  1463. He's against God

  1464. and his people.

  1465. And you think that

  1466. if Satan's out

  1467. to get somebody,

  1468. he would try to,

  1469. to torment

  1470. the Christians,

  1471. the ones who do,

1472. have the seal of God.

1473. I'm sure he wants to,

  1474. but he can't.

1475. He has no authority to.

  1476. And that's the irony

  1477. of it here,

  1478. is that instead,

  1479. Satan torments

1480. those who belong to him,

  1481. those who have

1482. the mark of the beast,

  1483. so that they long

  1484. to die.

  1485. That's what Satan

  1486. does to his followers.

  1487. Sometimes I hear

  1488. Christians say,

  1489. oh,

  1490. it's so hard

  1491. to be a Christian.

  1492. It would be nice

  1493. to be a non-Christian

1494. and not have to worry

  1495. about fighting sin

  1496. all the time.

1497. You've got to be kidding me.

  1498. You'd rather be

  1499. enslaved to sin.

  1500. You'd rather be

  1501. under divine condemnation.

  1502. You'd rather have

  1503. no eternal purpose

  1504. or ultimate fulfillment

  1505. in life.

  1506. You'd rather be afflicted

  1507. with this tormenting

  1508. power of Satan.

  1509. Absolutely not.

  1510. Don't think,

  1511. don't think for a moment

  1512. that Satan

  1513. will give you

  1514. an easy way out.

  1515. He will do everything

  1516. in his power

  1517. to make your life

  1518. a living hell.

  1519. Satan's horde

  1520. of demonic locusts

  1521. torment those

  1522. who do not know

  1523. Jesus Christ

  1524. and make them

  1525. long for death.

  1526. Imagine how

  1527. painful this is.

  1528. They long for death

  1529. because life

  1530. is such a torment

  1531. yet they cannot

  1532. have it.

  1533. Death eludes them.

  1534. It flees from them.

  1535. This is such a

  1536. dire picture

  1537. of

  1538. futility,

  1539. purposelessness,

  1540. despair,

  1541. hopelessness.

  1542. This condition

  1543. of unbelievers

  1544. here forms

  1545. a stark contrast

  1546. with the way

  1547. the believers

  1548. are described

  1549. in Revelation 12,

  1550. 11,

  1551. as those who

  1552. bore faithful

  1553. witness to Jesus

  1554. Christ and loved

  1555. their lives

  1556. not unto death

  1557. because they were

  1558. killed,

  1559. basically,

  1560. because of their

  1561. faithful witness

  1562. to Jesus

  1563. by the unbelieving

  1564. world.

  1565. They were persecuted

  1566. and martyred.

  1567. And so,

  1568. these believers

  1569. were killed

  1570. by these unbelievers

  1571. but now they're

  1572. in the eternal joy

  1573. of an eternal life

  1574. and these people

  1575. who killed them

  1576. want to die

  1577. but cannot die.

  1578. That's the stark

  1579. contrast.

  1580. It's a fitting

  1581. punishment.

  1582. Now,

  1583. I think

  1584. if this is

  1585. referring to

  1586. something that's

  1587. already happening

  1588. and it's of a

  1589. spiritual nature,

  1590. of course,

  1591. there are Christians

  1592. who can sometimes

  1593. fall into hopelessness

  1594. and despair as well

1595. but then how do you

  1596. square this reality

  1597. with verse 4

  1598. which says that

  1599. those who have

  1600. the seal of God

  1601. on their foreheads

  1602. are protected

  1603. from the torment

  1604. of these demonic locusts

  1605. and the difference

  1606. is that the non-Christians

  1607. do not have

  1608. the seal of God

  1609. while Christians

  1610. do have the seal

  1611. of God's protection

  1612. over them.

  1613. Ephesians 1,

  1614. 13 to 14 says,

  1615. when we heard

  1616. the word of truth,

1617. the gospel of our salvation

  1618. and believed in Jesus,

  1619. we were sealed

  1620. with the promised

  1621. Holy Spirit

  1622. with the guarantee

  1623. of our inheritance

  1624. until God redeems

  1625. his possession.

  1626. The Spirit of God

  1627. guarantees our heavenly

  1628. inheritance to us

1629. and so we have a hope

  1630. that has substance

1631. regardless of how you feel

  1632. in the moment.

  1633. It's not a wishful thinking

  1634. but it's hope

  1635. that is based on

  1636. and grounded in reality

  1637. of something that will

  1638. actually happen

  1639. in the future

  1640. and Christians

  1641. all have that hope.

1642. We all have that seal

  1643. as opposed to

  1644. non-Christians

  1645. who do not.

  1646. We have the means,

  1647. access to the shield

  1648. of faith

  1649. as Ephesians 6, 16

  1650. which we can raise

  1651. in order to extinguish

  1652. the flaming darts

  1653. of the evil one.

  1654. Now let's look at

  1655. the second woe

1656. which is the sixth trumpet.

  1657. When it's blown

  1658. it says it releases

  1659. the four angels

  1660. who are bound

  1661. at the great river

  1662. Euphrates.

  1663. This is reminiscent

  1664. of Revelation 7, 1

  1665. where there were

  1666. four angels

1667. standing at the four corners

  1668. of the earth

  1669. and were holding back

  1670. the four winds

  1671. of the earth.

  1672. I think

  1673. there's some parallels

  1674. there but I think

  1675. these are different

  1676. angels because

  1677. there's a series

  1678. of escalation.

  1679. We saw

  1680. of the four horsemen

1681. kind of the demonic angels

  1682. earlier Revelation 6

  1683. as well

  1684. and they were permitted

  1685. to take a fourth

  1686. of life

  1687. kill a fourth

  1688. of humanity

  1689. and here

  1690. they have the authority

  1691. to kill a third

  1692. of mankind

  1693. Revelation 9, 18

1694. so there's an escalation here

  1695. and the four winds

  1696. in chapter 7

  1697. were restrained

  1698. until God's people

  1699. were sealed

  1700. but this second woe

  1701. occurs after

  1702. God's people are sealed.

  1703. So it says

  1704. in verse 15

  1705. that the four angels

  1706. had been prepared

  1707. for the hour

  1708. the day

  1709. the month

  1710. and the year

  1711. when they are released

  1712. to kill a third

  1713. of mankind

  1714. and so

  1715. that seems to indicate

  1716. a very definite

  1717. planned time

1718. that God has in mind

  1719. when these four angels

1720. are going to be released

  1721. and because of that

  1722. I think

  1723. whether you take

  1724. all of the trumpets

1725. as lying in the future

  1726. or

  1727. you know

  1728. or most of it

1729. except for the last two

  1730. perhaps

  1731. lying in the

  1732. lying in the present

1733. and happening in the present

  1734. I think this seal

  1735. definitely lies

  1736. in the future

  1737. I don't want to say

  1738. definitely

  1739. because it's hard

  1740. to say anything

  1741. definitely

  1742. about these seals

  1743. and the trumpets

  1744. and the bowls

  1745. but I think

  1746. most likely

  1747. this is lying

  1748. in the future

  1749. because there's

  1750. an appointed time

  1751. prepared for the hour

  1752. the day

  1753. the month

  1754. and the year

  1755. to kill a third

  1756. of mankind

  1757. and that would fit

  1758. because even in

  1759. the seal series

1760. it's in the sixth seal

1761. that we begin to see

  1762. kind of the climactic

  1763. judgments

  1764. that will occur

  1765. in the future

  1766. and likewise

  1767. in the seventh bowl

  1768. the seventh

1769. in the seventh bowl series

  1770. the sixth bowl

1771. actually has so many parallels

  1772. to the sixth trumpet

  1773. both the demonic sources

  1774. originating from Euphrates

  1775. and in that

  1776. and in that

  1777. judgment

  1778. in Revelation 16

  1779. they assemble

  1780. the demonic

  1781. beings

  1782. that are released

  1783. assemble

  1784. deceive the kings

  1785. in order to

  1786. assemble an army

  1787. to wage war

  1788. against

  1789. against God

  1790. at the battle

  1791. of Armageddon

  1792. and so I think

  1793. it's possible

  1794. that this trumpet

  1795. sick trumpet

  1796. is paralleling

  1797. that sixth bowl

  1798. that pen ultimate

  1799. the second to last

  1800. sign

  1801. of divine judgment

  1802. before Christ returns

  1803. and the seventh seal

  1804. and the seventh bowl

  1805. seventh trumpet

  1806. are all

  1807. unleashed

  1808. I think they're

  1809. the seventh

1810. of each of those series

  1811. are referring

  1812. to the final judgment

  1813. when these four angels

  1814. are released

  1815. they will appear

  1816. with mounted troops

  1817. that number

  1818. twice

  1819. ten thousand

  1820. times ten thousand

  1821. which is

1822. if you take it literally

  1823. two hundred million

  1824. but I think

  1825. that's probably

  1826. a figurative number

  1827. for an extremely large

  1828. demonic horde

  1829. I saw somewhere

  1830. that

  1831. apparently like

  1832. there was a times

  1833. magazine article

  1834. in 1965

  1835. that's

  1836. before I was born

  1837. so I don't know

1838. but I looked it up

  1839. and they said that

  1840. I heard some preachers

  1841. say that

  1842. China

  1843. boasted of

  1844. having an army

  1845. of two hundred million

  1846. soldiers

  1847. and that

  1848. and that

  1849. that's

  1850. fulfillment

  1851. of this

  1852. revelation

  1853. prophecy

  1854. and I looked up

  1855. the article

  1856. and it actually

  1857. doesn't say

  1858. two hundred million

  1859. I think it says

  1860. something closer

  1861. to like

  1862. twelve point five

  1863. million

  1864. and so

  1865. I don't know

  1866. who made that up

  1867. but

  1868. just this kind of

  1869. misinformation

  1870. is all over the

  1871. internet

  1872. so just don't

  1873. look on the internet

  1874. for these things

  1875. and

  1876. I think

  1877. the

  1878. but it's just

  1879. an extremely large

  1880. demonic horde

  1881. their horses

  1882. have heads

  1883. I mean

  1884. they may involve

  1885. human

  1886. who are doing

  1887. the demon's

  1888. bidding

  1889. but what's described

  1890. here is clearly

  1891. demonic

  1892. the horses have heads

  1893. that look like

  1894. lions heads

  1895. when have you ever

  1896. seen something like that

  1897. their mouths

  1898. they breathe out

  1899. fire and smoke

  1900. and sulfur

  1901. which are called

  1902. the three plagues

  1903. that kill a third

  1904. of mankind

  1905. and these horses

  1906. also have tails

  1907. which are like

  1908. serpents with heads

  1909. with which they wound

  1910. so this demonic

  1911. cavalry

  1912. wounds with their

  1913. serpent head

  1914. tails

  1915. and kill with

  1916. their lion-like heads

  1917. and they spew out

  1918. fire and smoke

  1919. and sulfur

  1920. the collar

  1921. of their breastplates

  1922. correspond to

  1923. what they spew out

  1924. from their mouths

  1925. the color

  1926. of fire

  1927. of sapphire

  1928. and of sulfur

  1929. sapphire

  1930. is literally

  1931. in Greek

  1932. hyacinth

  1933. which matches

  1934. the bluish

  1935. the hue

  1936. of the smoke

  1937. the color

  1938. of smoke

  1939. and the physical

  1940. death

  1941. that these

  1942. demonic hordes

  1943. will bring about

  1944. leads to

  1945. eternal

  1946. spiritual death

  1947. the second death

  1948. and

  1949. because these people

  1950. die without

  1951. repenting of their sins

  1952. this is signaled

  1953. by the mention

  1954. of the fire

  1955. and the smoke

  1956. and the sulfur

  1957. which are symbolic

  1958. of divine judgment

  1959. in Genesis 19

  1960. if you recall

  1961. in Sodom and Gomorrah

  1962. when God brings

  1963. judgment upon them

  1964. what rains down

  1965. is fire

  1966. and sulfur

  1967. and fire

  1968. and later

  1969. it makes the cities

  1970. burn with smoke

  1971. so fire and sulfur

  1972. and smoke

1973. you see all of that

  1974. in Genesis 19

1975. and then fire and sulfur

  1976. are also together

  1977. mentioned as a pair

  1978. elsewhere in Revelation

  1979. to represent God's

  1980. final judgment

  1981. for unrepentant sinners

1982. it says in Revelation 21

  1983. 8

1984. but as for the cowardly

  1985. the faithless

  1986. the detestable

  1987. as for murderers

  1988. the sexually immoral

  1989. sorcerers

  1990. idolaters

  1991. and all liars

  1992. their portion

1993. will be in the lake

  1994. that burns

  1995. with fire

  1996. and sulfur

  1997. which is

  1998. the second death

  1999. those who

  2000. perish

  2001. during this

  2002. second woe

  2003. killed by this

  2004. demonic horde

  2005. will be destined

  2006. for the eternal fire

  2007. and sulfur

  2008. of the second death

  2009. and if you are

  2010. fortunate enough

  2011. to survive it

  2012. then this is

  2013. a warning sign

  2014. again

  2015. for unbelievers

  2016. repent

  2017. and believe

  2018. in Jesus

  2019. for salvation

  2020. so that you might

  2021. be sealed

  2022. protected

  2023. Revelation 20

  2024. 21

  2025. drive home

  2026. that main

  2027. theological point

  2028. it says

  2029. the rest of mankind

  2030. who were not

  2031. killed by these

  2032. plagues

  2033. did not repent

  2034. of the works

  2035. of their hands

  2036. nor give up

  2037. worshipping demons

  2038. and idols of gold

  2039. and silver

  2040. and bronze

  2041. and stone

  2042. and wood

  2043. which cannot see

  2044. or hear

  2045. or walk

  2046. nor did they

  2047. repent

  2048. nor did they

  2049. repent

  2050. of their murders

  2051. or their sorceries

  2052. or their sexual

  2053. immorality

  2054. or their thefts

  2055. there are many

  2056. differing views

  2057. on how the seven

  2058. seals

  2059. and the trumpets

  2060. and the bowls

  2061. fit within human

  2062. history

  2063. and with each

  2064. other

  2065. and to what

  2066. degree

  2067. they should be

  2068. interpreted

  2069. symbolically

  2070. but however

  2071. hopefully most

  2072. of us

  2073. can still agree

  2074. on this theological

  2075. point

  2076. that the sovereign

  2077. judgments of God

  2078. should make

  2079. sinners repent

  2080. these unbelieving

  2081. earth dwellers

  2082. should have repented

  2083. of their sins

  2084. and turned

  2085. toward God

  2086. the alarms

  2087. were blaring

  2088. all over

  2089. all around them

  2090. and throughout

  2091. their lives

  2092. and yet they chose

  2093. to ignore

  2094. the warning signs

  2095. ignore the birth

  2096. pains of redemption

  2097. which is why

  2098. they will perish

  2099. when the final

  2100. trumpet is blown

  2101. the seventh trumpet

  2102. is blown

  2103. and these verses

  2104. also vindicate God

  2105. and demonstrate

  2106. his righteousness

  2107. in judging sinners

  2108. because despite

  2109. many opportunities

  2110. for repentance

  2111. sinners are stubborn

  2112. in their rebellion

  2113. against God

  2114. they do not

  2115. give up

  2116. worshipping demons

  2117. and idols of gold

  2118. and silver

  2119. and bronze

  2120. and stone

  2121. and wood

  2122. this is the violation

  2123. of the second half

2124. I mean the first half

  2125. of the ten commandments

  2126. which deal with

  2127. loving God

  2128. with our whole hearts

  2129. they also refuse

  2130. to repent

  2131. it says in verse

  2132. 21

  2133. repent of their murders

  2134. or their sorceries

  2135. or their sexual immorality

  2136. or their thefts

  2137. this is a summary

  2138. of the second half

  2139. of the ten commandments

  2140. which deal with

  2141. loving our neighbors

  2142. as ourselves

  2143. this is a summary

  2144. of the ten commandments

  2145. in verses 20 and 21

  2146. which are summarizing

  2147. the greatest commandment

  2148. that Jesus gives

  2149. to love God

  2150. with your whole heart

  2151. and love your neighbor

  2152. as yourself

  2153. and all of humanity

  2154. has broken these laws

  2155. the only difference

  2156. between Christians

  2157. and non-Christians

  2158. on that front

  2159. is that Christians

  2160. have repented

  2161. of having broken

  2162. these laws

  2163. consider how

  2164. the unbelieving world

  2165. is in violation

  2166. of the first half

  2167. of the ten commandments

  2168. first of which is

  2169. you shall have

  2170. no other gods

  2171. before me

  2172. and second

  2173. is you shall

  2174. have making

  2175. for yourself

  2176. you shall not

  2177. make for yourself

  2178. an image

  2179. in the form

  2180. of anything

  2181. in heaven above

  2182. or in the earth

  2183. or in the waters

  2184. below

  2185. and you shall not

  2186. bow down to them

  2187. and worship them

  2188. we don't find

  2189. many non-Christians

  2190. around us

  2191. worshiping demons

  2192. explicitly

  2193. although in Salem

  2194. they do have

  2195. Satan's temple

  2196. and some people

  2197. do do that

  2198. and there are

  2199. real Satan

  2200. worshippers

  2201. but most people

  2202. who claim to be

  2203. Satan worshippers

  2204. are just trolls

  2205. fishing for attention

  2206. and we don't need

2207. to give it to them

  2208. and however

  2209. the reality is

  2210. as 1 Corinthians 10

  2211. 18 to 21

  2212. tells us

  2213. when people

  2214. worship idols

  2215. false gods

  2216. of other false religions

  2217. it says

  2218. in 1 Corinthians 10

  2219. 18 to 20

  2220. that there are

  2221. actually demons

  2222. lying behind

  2223. that idolatry

  2224. so false religions

  2225. like Islam

  2226. and Hinduism

  2227. are not

  2228. benign aspects

  2229. of human culture

  2230. that we can celebrate

  2231. as part of our

  2232. cultural diversity

  2233. they lead people

  2234. to the worship

  2235. of demons

  2236. the Bible is

  2237. very clear

  2238. about that

  2239. some people

  2240. in the West

  2241. like to claim

  2242. that Buddhism

  2243. is

  2244. oh Buddhism

  2245. is a philosophy

  2246. it's not a religion

  2247. there's no God

  2248. it's just a system

  2249. of how to live

  2250. have you been

  2251. to a Buddhist country

2252. if you go to a country

  2253. that actually

  2254. is Buddhist

  2255. and where

  2256. everybody is Buddhist

  2257. they worship demons

  2258. there's all kinds

  2259. of spirits and gods

  2260. involved in Buddhism

  2261. and it's not

  2262. even if you're not

  2263. involved with these

  2264. false gods

  2265. sometimes

  2266. idolatry

  2267. can be more subtle

  2268. Habakkuk 1.11

  2269. speaks of guilty men

  2270. whose own might

  2271. is their God

2272. do you put your confidence

  2273. in your own strength

  2274. in your own power

  2275. maybe the authority

  2276. you have

  2277. and you live

  2278. as if might

  2279. makes right

  2280. then you are

  2281. a worshiper

  2282. of power

  2283. an idolater

  2284. Job 31

  2285. 24-20

  2286. says

  2287. if I have

  2288. made gold

  2289. my trust

  2290. or called

  2291. fine gold

  2292. my confidence

  2293. if I have

  2294. rejoiced

  2295. because my wealth

  2296. was abundant

  2297. or because my hand

  2298. had found much

  2299. this also

  2300. would be an iniquity

  2301. to be punished

  2302. by the judges

  2303. for I would have

  2304. been false

  2305. to God

  2306. above

  2307. this is why

  2308. Jesus says

  2309. you cannot worship

  2310. both God

  2311. and money

  2312. there are many

  2313. many people

  2314. in our country

  2315. and in the world

  2316. that worship

  2317. money

  2318. if your primary

  2319. confidence

  2320. in life

  2321. for your own

  2322. security

  2323. and for your

  2324. well-being

  2325. is not in God

  2326. who provides

  2327. for you

  2328. but in your

  2329. bank account

  2330. in your job

  2331. security

  2332. you're worshipping

  2333. money

  2334. if that's

  2335. what you're

  2336. occupied

  2337. primarily with

  2338. Philippians 3-19

  2339. says that

  2340. the enemies

  2341. of the cross

  2342. of Christ

  2343. that their

  2344. God

  2345. is their

  2346. belly

  2347. and they glory

  2348. in their shame

  2349. with minds

  2350. set on

  2351. earthly things

  2352. if your

  2353. primary purpose

  2354. in life

  2355. is to enjoy

  2356. good foods

  2357. and good drinks

  2358. and to travel

  2359. and enjoy

  2360. beautiful scenery

  2361. it's not wrong

  2362. to enjoy

  2363. such things

  2364. but if that's

  2365. your primary

  2366. purpose in life

  2367. that's what

  2368. you live for

  2369. that's what

  2370. you have

  2371. your mindset

  2372. on

  2373. then you

  2374. have your

  2375. mindset

  2376. on earthly

  2377. things

  2378. not on

  2379. things of

  2380. heaven

  2381. and you're

  2382. worshipping

  2383. your own

  2384. belly

  2385. gluttony

  2386. is idolatrous

  2387. and sometimes

  2388. it's the

  2389. skinniest

  2390. people

  2391. who are

  2392. the most

  2393. gluttonous

  2394. Colossians 3-5

  2395. teaches us

  2396. that covetousness

  2397. is idolatry

  2398. it's not an

  2399. accident that

  2400. the first

  2401. commandment is

  2402. you shall have

  2403. no other

  2404. gods before

  2405. me

  2406. and the

  2407. tenth

  2408. commandment

  2409. is you

  2410. shall not

  2411. covet

  2412. it bookends

  2413. the two

  2414. it bookends

  2415. the ten

  2416. commandments

  2417. covetousness

  2418. so if

  2419. you desire

  2420. what you

  2421. don't have

  2422. what rightly

  2423. belongs to

  2424. another

  2425. person

  2426. it's

  2427. idolatry

  2428. maybe it's

  2429. someone else's

  2430. boyfriend

  2431. or girlfriend

  2432. or someone else's

  2433. career

  2434. or someone else's

  2435. family or their

  2436. vacation

  2437. it's guilty of

  2438. idolatry if

  2439. that's what's

  2440. driving your

  2441. life

  2442. that's the

  2443. animating

  2444. source of

  2445. your life

  2446. all these

  2447. specific biblical

  2448. examples teach

  2449. us that an

  2450. idol is not

  2451. necessarily a

  2452. physical idol

  2453. or a false

  2454. god but what

  2455. you count on

  2456. and put your

  2457. trust in other

  2458. than god

  2459. what you desire

  2460. more than god

  2461. what you are

  2462. devoted to more

  2463. than god

  2464. and I believe

  2465. there are people

  2466. here who need

  2467. to repent who

  2468. are not actually

  2469. followers of

  2470. Jesus

  2471. and you need

  2472. to repent

  2473. what do you

  2474. count on and

  2475. put your trust

  2476. in other than

  2477. god

  2478. your beauty

  2479. attractiveness

  2480. your academic

  2481. credentials

  2482. your intelligence

  2483. your wealth

  2484. your spouse

  2485. maybe you

  2486. idolize

  2487. politicians

  2488. think the

  2489. next president

  2490. will be the

  2491. savior of the

  2492. world

  2493. solve all our

  2494. problems

  2495. maybe you

  2496. turn to

  2497. horoscopes

  2498. tarot cards

  2499. what do you

  2500. desire and

  2501. covet what are

  2502. you devoted to

  2503. more than god

  2504. what are you

  2505. what are you

  2506. devoted to

  2507. if someone

  2508. looked at your

  2509. life and

  2510. asked what

  2511. is and tried

  2512. to figure out

  2513. what is this

  2514. person devoted

  2515. to would it

  2516. be god

  2517. or would it

  2518. be something

  2519. else

  2520. would it be

  2521. finding love

  2522. would it be

  2523. climbing the

  2524. ladder of

  2525. success

  2526. would it be

  2527. having

  2528. children

  2529. matthew 10

  2530. 37

2531. It says, whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.

2532. Whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

2533. Idolaters do not worship God with all their hearts because their allegiance is divided.

2534. They have other things that they're worshiping, and this is a warning to repent.

2535. Verse 21 tells us that the earth dwellers also refuse to repent of their murders or their sorceries

2536. or their sexual immorality or their thefts.

2537. This is a violation of the second greatest commandment, to love your neighbor as yourself.

2538. Instead of loving their neighbors, they love themselves, so they hate, and hatred leads to murder.

2539. However, they commit sexual immorality and adultery because they care not for the well-being of someone else's marriage,

2540. but only for their own pleasure.

2541. They steal because they want to possess what belongs to someone else for themselves.

2542. This is how the unbelieving world is.

2543. And if that's you, you need to repent.

2544. Repentance is not merely feeling sorry that you were caught red-handed.

2545. Some people are only sorry because they were caught.

2546. Not sorry for the wrong that they have actually done.

2547. If you only feel grief for wrongdoing when you're caught doing it,

2548. and you never feel grief before God for sins that nobody else in the world knows of,

2549. then you're probably not repentant.

2550. Because true Christians feel grief and godly sorrow for wrongdoing,

2551. not just because they were caught,

2552. but because they know that they're displeasing the Lord.

  2553. But it's even more.

2554. Repentance is even more than just merely expressing sorrow or regret for sin.

2555. It's actually turning from the sin.

  2556. 2 Corinthians 7, 10 to 11 says that godly grief produces a repentance

2557. that leads to salvation without regret.

2558. Repentance entails turning from sin,

2559. turning to God from idols to serve the living and true God.

  2560. This is 1 Thessalonians 1, 9.

2561. It's a change in belief that leads to a change in behavior,

2562. in the way you live.

2563. And of course, the change in behavior might take time.

  2564. It might be slow.

  2565. It might include setbacks.

2566. But there will be a real, genuine, and discernible change

2567. in the life of a true believer.

2568. Imagine, right, I've used this illustration before

2569. that your friend is driving,

2570. and you're mounting the GPS,

2571. and your friend is clearly going in the opposite direction.

2572. You say, hey, you've got to turn around.

2573. You're going in the wrong direction.

2574. And then your friend just keeps driving in the same direction.

  2575. Right?

2576. I mean, then you would think that your friend didn't hear you right.

2577. Or, right, I mean, did you really hear me?

2578. Like, you're going the wrong way.

2579. You've got to turn around.

2580. Like, something's wrong if they're not actually turning around.

2581. It shows that they haven't actually believed you.

2582. They actually haven't heard you, or they just don't believe you.

  2583. They think you're wrong.

2584. Likewise, if you tell someone about the Bible,

2585. if you tell someone about Jesus,

2586. if you tell someone the gospel,

2587. and they say, oh, yeah, yeah, sure, I believe in it,

  2588. but there's no turning,

2589. I can assure you they haven't heard you.

  2590. They haven't repented.

2591. Now, some of you have an overly active conscience,

  2592. and very sensitive conscience,

2593. and maybe you're tormented every day thinking that maybe I'm not repentant enough.

  2594. Man, I don't think I'm safe because I'm not repentant enough.

2595. And I want to assure you that, yes,

2596. even when you make the turn,

2597. and you're trying to follow the directions that God's given you,

2598. you're still going to have some wrong turns.

2599. Sometimes you're going to have some regression.

2600. But the big difference is that you're still trying to follow the directions that God's given you.

2601. You have made a decisive turn in your life.

  2602. So don't try to,

2603. I love the song that we sang.

2604. I was hoping that there would be lyrics up here that I can read.

  2605. The Come Ye Sinners,

2606. and the verse was talking about how we can be,

2607. don't try to work up a fancy,

2608. or get to a place where you feel like your works are sufficient,

2609. where you've done enough to get to a good place before God,

  2610. good place with God.

  2611. You can't get there.

2612. What God requires is you feel your need for Him.

2613. What God requires is that you know enough to say that my works are not enough.

2614. That turn, that turn is what saves you.

  2615. Why?

2616. Because Jesus died for your sin.

  2617. If Jesus wanted,

2618. if God wanted you to save yourself,

2619. if God wanted you to earn your salvation,

2620. then Jesus would never have died on that cross.

2621. But Jesus died on that cross because He wanted to pay the price for your sin,

2622. and because He wanted to give His righteousness to you as a gift so that you can be saved.

2623. And so if you are here today and wondering if you can be saved or not,

  2624. if you can repent,

  2625. you can repent,

2626. and you can turn from your sins,

2627. and you can have the seal of God and a guarantee of eternal life by the power of the Holy Spirit.

  2628. Let's pray.

  2629. Father,

  2630. Father,

2631. bring every single person here,

2632. if there's any who has not truly repented,

2633. bring them to the godly sorrow that leads to repentance, Lord.

  2634. And Lord,

2635. I pray for those of us who do know you,

2636. who are sometimes discouraged, by the way,

2637. remind us of your amazing grace,

2638. the wonderful gift and opportunity of repentance you've given us,

2639. and the privilege that we have turned from our slavery to sin and turned to you,

2640. and help us to rejoice and to delight in Christ,

2641. and live in light of that seal of the name of the living God that is upon our souls.

2642. Oh, what joy and glory

  2643. awaits us in eternity,

2644. and what protection and security we have here in this life.

2645. We thank you for that, God.

2646. In Jesus' name we pray.

  2647. Amen.
