  1. Hello, everybody.

  2. Thank you, Sean, for the wonderful introduction.

  3. If you don't know me, my name's Charlie,

  4. and as Sean said, I'm married to my wonderful wife, Stephanie,

  5. and we have a daughter who's almost two,

  6. and her name's Eleonora, and she is just the cutest I am.

  7. As Sean said, a software engineer by day

  8. and a seminarian by night.

  9. And I wanted to thank Sean for giving me this opportunity

  10. and entrusting his precious flock to me this morning.

  11. So with that, let's begin by praying

  12. for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  13. Our Heavenly Father, may I, by your Holy Spirit,

  14. communicate your truth faithfully and effectively this day.

  15. May the words that come out of my mouth follow your truth,

  16. and may that truth sanctify us here.

  17. In Jesus' name we pray.

  18. Amen.

  19. So today's text will be from Jonah 4.

  20. And while you go flip to it in your Bibles

  21. or go to it on your phones,

  22. let me give a quick introduction.

  23. Now, Jonah almost needs no introduction

  24. because most of you are familiar with it.

  25. If you grew up in the church

  26. or even are familiar with anything about the Bible,

  27. you've heard of Jonah and the whale.

  28. And whether you're familiar or not,

  29. I think it's important to give some context to the passage.

  30. Jonah was one of the minor prophets,

  31. minor just because he wrote less that's recorded in the scriptures.

  32. And he worked around the time of 770 BC.

  33. And we know this because there's a reference to him in 2 Kings 1425.

  34. The book of Jonah starts with the word of the Lord coming to Jonah,

  35. the son of Amittai,

  36. and telling him to go to Nineveh, a great city,

  37. and call out against it,

  38. for their evil has come up against,

  39. or come up before me, the Lord.

  40. So Jonah is told to go to the Ninevites.

  41. And who are the Ninevites?

  42. Well, they were, Nineveh was the capital of Assyria.

  43. And Assyria was one of the neighboring nations of Israel,

  44. but also one of their fiercest and cruelest enemies.

  45. The Assyrians were brutal and wicked people known for bloody conquest

  46. and would later even capture, enslave, and exile

  47. the entire northern kingdom of Israel.

  48. So Jonah's not interested.

  49. Instead of listening to God,

  50. he goes in the opposite direction.

  51. And Nineveh was, you know,

  52. far to the east of Israel,

  53. and Tarshish was in Spain, far to the west.

  54. So basically he went to the other side of the known world.

  55. He books a ship,

  56. but he finds out that running away from God is quite hard to do.

  57. The Lord sends a great storm upon him.

  58. And, you know, the sailors,

  59. they try to save their ship by tossing out the cargo.

  60. And when they finally realize Jonah's the one at fault,

  61. they don't want to toss him over.

  62. But Jonah says, like, it's the only way to survive.

  63. So Jonah ends up in the waves.

  64. He expects to drown, but God saves him.

  65. He appoints a great fish,

  66. probably not a whale according to the word,

  67. but a great fish that swallows him up,

  68. keeps him alive in its belly for three days and three nights.

  69. Within the belly of the whale,

  70. we read about Jonah's, or Jonah prays to the Lord.

  71. And we have this recorded to us in Jonah 2.

  72. He calls out to the Lord.

  73. He thanks him for saving him.

  74. And he dedicates himself to the Lord,

  75. saying, I will pay what I have vowed.

  76. So God commands the fish to spit Jonah back up onto the dry land.

  77. And you see at the beginning of verse, or chapter three,

  78. that the word of the Lord comes again to Jonah the second time

  79. and going to tell him to go to Nineveh, the great city.

  80. So he goes to the city.

  81. He walks through it.

  82. He preaches a very short message.

  83. Yet in 40 days, the city will be overthrown.

  84. And sure enough, the city repents.

  85. The news reaches the king.

  86. There is a citywide fast and man to beast,

  87. all refrain from food and water.

  88. Mankind turns from his or her evil ways.

  89. And sure enough, God relents.

  90. So that brings us here to Jonah 4.

  91. So if you're willing and able,

  92. please stand for the reading of God's word.

  93. Just for a little context,

  94. I want to start one verse back in chapter three, verse 10.

  95. Jonah 3.10.

  96. When God saw what they did,

  97. how they turned from their evil way,

  98. God relented of the disaster he said he would do to them.

  99. And he did not do it.

  100. But it displeased Jonah exceedingly.

  101. And he was angry.

  102. And he prayed to the Lord and said,

  103. Oh Lord, is this not what I said when I was yet in my country?

  104. This is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish.

  105. For I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful,

  106. slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love

  107. and relenting from disaster.

  108. Therefore now, oh Lord, please take my life from me.

  109. For it is better for me to die than to live.

  110. And the Lord said, do you do well to be angry?

  111. Jonah went out of the city and sat to the east of the city

  112. and made a booth for himself there.

  113. He sat under it in the shade

  114. till he should see what would become of the city.

  115. Now the Lord God appointed a plant

  116. and made it come up over Jonah

  117. that it might be a shade over his head

  118. to save him from his discomfort.

  119. So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the plant.

  120. But when dawn came up the next day,

  121. God appointed a worm that attacked the plant

  122. so that it withered.

  123. When the sun rose,

  124. God appointed a scorching east wind

  125. and the sun beat down on the head of Jonah

  126. so that he was faint.

  127. And he asked that he might die

  128. and said, it is better for me to die than to live.

  129. But God said to Jonah,

  130. do you do well to be angry for the plant?

  131. And he said, yes, I do well to be angry,

  132. angry enough to die.

  133. And the Lord said, you pity the plant

  134. for which you did not labor,

  135. nor did you make it grow,

  136. which came into being in a night

  137. and perished in a night.

  138. And should not I pity Nineveh,

  139. that great city in which there are

  140. more than 120,000 persons

  141. who do not know their right hand from their left

  142. and also much cattle?

  143. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  144. Please be seated.

  145. So if you grew up around the church

  146. and you're an English speaker,

  147. you would know that there are

  148. at least three J names

  149. you do not name your children.

  150. The first is Jesus.

  151. You know, don't call your Jesus,

  152. your child God.

  153. Second is Judas.

  154. Also not a good name.

  155. Third, Jezebel.

  156. So boys, girls, very bad names.

  157. And there's a few more you can add.

  158. And I would like to add Jonah.

  159. You know, no offense if you know a Jonah

  160. or want to name your kid Jonah,

  161. but I don't think it's a good name.

  162. Just reading chapter four,

  163. you see that he's one of the most irritable

  164. and irrational figures in the entire scriptures.

  165. He is disobedient, callous, fickle, vengeful,

  166. and he's full of self-pity.

  167. And not to mention, he's just downright angry.

  168. I personally will not be naming

  169. any of my children Jonah.

  170. Yet he's here.

  171. We have this colorful character,

  172. this unhappy camper in scripture

  173. that God wants us to learn from.

  174. So this morning, I want us to learn from Jonah four.

  175. And the truth that I want us to bring away

  176. from today's text is that we should turn away

  177. from our self-centered desires

  178. and take on God's compassionate and merciful heart,

  179. a heart shown to us in Christ Jesus.

  180. So the first point is to put off Jonah's self-centered heart.

  181. We'll see that in the first nine verses.

  182. And the second is to put on God's compassionate heart

  183. in the last two verses.

  184. So let's start by looking at Jonah's self-centered heart.

  185. So if you look into your Bibles

  186. and maybe you have an ESV,

  187. at the bottom, there is a little footnote

  188. that will tell you that the word

  189. displeased Jonah exceedingly,

  190. says it was actually exceedingly evil to Jonah.

  191. And that word evil there is a,

  192. can be generically just used

  193. just to describe great calamity or disaster.

  194. And this is actually the same word

  195. in chapter three, verse 10,

  196. which is why I read it, you know,

  197. God relented of the disaster.

  198. So I want us to look at Jonah,

  199. like how amazing it is that Jonah thinks

  200. that God relenting of a disaster

  201. is a disaster to him.

  202. You know, Jonah, just by the numbers,

  203. is probably one of the most successful evangelists

  204. of the entire Bible.

  205. According to the 2023 census,

  206. Cambridge has a population

  207. of around 118,000 people,

  208. which is pretty close to 120K,

  209. which is what we see in Nineveh.

  210. So imagine you preach the gospel

  211. to all of Cambridge,

  212. all of Cambridge repents,

  213. and it makes you angry.

  214. It's a disaster.

  215. What is going on?

  216. Jonah tells us what's going on in verse two.

  217. He says,

  218. Oh Lord, is this not what I said

  219. when I was in my country,

  220. yet in my country?

  221. This is why I may haste to flee to Tarshish,

  222. for I knew that you are a gracious God

  223. and merciful, slow to anger

  224. and abounding in steadfast love,

  225. relenting from disaster.

  226. See, Jonah knows his Bibles.

  227. He knows his Pentateuch,

  228. his first five Bibles,

  229. and he knows the story of Moses.

  230. Moses is having a hard time

  231. and he asks God,

  232. show me your glory.

  233. And God says,

  234. I will show you my glory

  235. and I will proclaim to you my name.

  236. And he basically quotes his name.

  237. Exodus 34,

  238. 34, 6 says,

  239. The Lord passed before him,

  240. Moses,

  241. and proclaims,

  242. The Lord, the Lord,

  243. a God merciful and gracious,

  244. slow to anger,

  245. abounding in steadfast love

  246. and faithfulness.

  247. It's in God's name

  248. to be gracious and forgiving.

  249. And Jonah doesn't want to have any of that.

  250. He personally cannot stand

  251. to see these Assyrians,

  252. these wicked Assyrians

  253. who had already done damage

  254. probably already done damage

  255. to the cities of Israel

  256. and would one day destroy them.

  257. He couldn't stand to see

  258. those wicked people forgiven.

  259. Jonah was perhaps hoping

  260. that Nineveh would be overthrown

  261. in the same style of Sodom and Gomorrah.

  262. That word for Nineveh being overthrown

  263. in chapter three, verse four,

  264. is the same word used to describe

  265. the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah,

  266. where God rained sulfur and fire

  267. out of heaven

  268. and burned the city down,

  269. killing everyone.

  270. These evil Assyrians

  271. were no better in Jonah's eyes

  272. and they too deserved

  273. to be overthrown.

  274. But God relented.

  275. And this made Jonah angry,

  276. so angry that he wanted to die,

  277. that he told God,

  278. it is better for me to die

  279. than to live.

  280. You know, there's a lot of angry things

  281. we can say to each other

  282. and there's a lot of angry things

  283. we can say to God.

  284. And I think this is one of the greatest

  285. and most deepest expressions

  286. of bitterness and anger,

  287. that telling God

  288. that not having it the way you want it

  289. means you might as well just die.

  290. This expression calls back

  291. to an episode with another prophet.

  292. In 1 Kings 18,

  293. we read about the prophet Elijah.

  294. And that's also another story

  295. about fire from heaven.

  296. Elijah is a prophet of God

  297. and he challenges the prophets of Baal

  298. to show who is the real God.

  299. Baal is an idol

  300. and the prophets of Baal

  301. cannot call fire down from heaven

  302. and Elijah is able to.

  303. And he shows that the God of Israel

  304. is the true God

  305. and he thinks he's done it.

  306. But his efforts don't stick.

  307. Just a few verses later,

  308. Jezebel, the queen of Israel

  309. and a Baal worshiper,

  310. someone you shouldn't name your child after,

  311. is completely unfazed

  312. and she vows to kill Elijah.

  313. So Elijah flees a day into the wilderness,

  314. sits down under a broom tree

  315. and says,

  316. it is enough now, O Lord.

  317. Take away my life.

  318. I'm no better than my fathers.

  319. So Elijah,

  320. he's no better than his fathers,

  321. probably also prophets.

  322. They couldn't accomplish their mission.

  323. Might as well die.

  324. You know, it kind of,

  325. it's kind of like a high school senior

  326. who doesn't get their,

  327. into their dream college

  328. and becomes bitter and sullen

  329. or, you know,

  330. a guy who becomes salty

  331. because he gets shot down by a girl.

  332. You know,

  333. you had dreams,

  334. now they're gone.

  335. Might as well lay in bed

  336. and do nothing.

  337. This is the same for Jonah.

  338. This is our first look

  339. into his self-centered,

  340. self-focused heart.

  341. Jonah is,

  342. is very concerned

  343. about his own expression of justice.

  344. What he thinks

  345. should happen to the Ninevites.

  346. It's so central to who he is

  347. that he can't stand it not happening.

  348. It's all about Jonah, Jonah, Jonah,

  349. and not about God.

  350. So,

  351. into his anger,

  352. God speaks.

  353. He asks them a very simple question.

  354. Do you do well to be angry?

  355. And I think this question

  356. already begins to reveal

  357. some of God's heart.

  358. There is great patience

  359. and wisdom in this question.

  360. You know,

  361. when my child is angry,

  362. I just tell her to stop.

  363. You know,

  364. it doesn't work,

  365. but,

  366. you know,

  367. God could easily have told Jonah,

  368. do not be angry.

  369. This is not befitting

  370. a prophet of the Lord.

  371. But I think

  372. there is great wisdom

  373. in this question.

  374. One,

  375. because it asks him

  376. to respond

  377. and two,

  378. because the question itself

  379. is so well worded.

  380. The idea of doing well,

  381. I think,

  382. cuts to the core

  383. of what anger is.

  384. So,

  385. anger,

  386. when you really think about it,

  387. is that strong emotional response

  388. that flares up

  389. when your standard

  390. of right and wrong,

  391. what's good,

  392. worse,

  393. well,

  394. or good or bad,

  395. or well or worse,

  396. is violated.

  397. That's what makes you angry.

  398. You know,

  399. I tell my daughter

  400. that,

  401. it actually happened this morning,

  402. I wrote it down

  403. and it happened this morning,

  404. to come over to the door

  405. and put on her shoes

  406. because we have to go to church

  407. and she runs off to play

  408. and I can feel the anger boiling up

  409. because I am her father.

  410. She needs to honor me

  411. and what I say goes

  412. and she needs to obey now.

  413. And that's what a good kid would do.

  414. You think about road rage,

  415. you know,

  416. what would a good driver do?

  417. They would obey,

  418. they would do well

  419. by the rules of the road

  420. and so when they don't,

  421. you honk at them.

  422. You know,

  423. sometimes,

  424. you know,

  425. we can also be angry at God.

  426. We think,

  427. we want something to happen

  428. that's good,

  429. you know,

  430. I want my family to have peace.

  431. I want,

  432. you know,

  433. this relationship that,

  434. you know,

  435. God,

  436. you've said it's good

  437. and you haven't given it to me

  438. and that

  439. makes you angry at God.

  440. Something similar here

  441. is going on with Jonah.

  442. It makes him snap.

  443. God does not do well

  444. in his eyes

  445. by his standard.

  446. So God is using this question

  447. and he's,

  448. he's phrasing it in a way

  449. that wrenches Jonah's finger

  450. from pointing at God

  451. back to himself.

  452. So how does Jonah answer God?

  453. Well,

  454. he doesn't.

  455. I mean,

  456. some of us here

  457. would be head over heels

  458. to have the Lord God himself

  459. speak in such a direct manner to us.

  460. But Jonah,

  461. Jonah,

  462. Jonah just brushes him off

  463. and continues on his own way.

  464. In verse five,

  465. we read that he goes out of the city

  466. and he sets up a booth for himself

  467. to get some shade.

  468. Maybe he thinks that

  469. the people will backslide.

  470. Maybe he thinks that God

  471. will change his mind.

  472. It's unclear.

  473. He's clearly not a rational guy.

  474. But he set up a booth

  475. for himself outside the city.

  476. That word booth we have

  477. in the Hebrew

  478. is the same used

  479. to describe the tents

  480. that the Jews were

  481. to make during the festival

  482. of booths.

  483. Nehemiah 8.15

  484. specifically tells us

  485. that these booths

  486. were made of branches

  487. of olive,

  488. wild olive,

  489. myrtle,

  490. palm,

  491. and other leafy trees.

  492. These are basically anything

  493. that could provide you

  494. shelter from the sun.

  495. And we don't know

  496. what time of the year

  497. Jonah takes place.

  498. We can kind of guess

  499. from storms and things,

  500. but it's hard to say.

  501. But we do know

  502. that the area of Nineveh

  503. can be unbelievably hot.

  504. The ancient city of Nineveh

  505. down to its very walls

  506. and gates

  507. has actually been discovered.

  508. It's within the bounds

  509. of the modern day city

  510. of Mosul in Iraq.

  511. And I took a peek

  512. at the average high temperature

  513. in Mosul

  514. in July of 2023.

  515. And the average

  516. was about 108 degrees Fahrenheit.

  517. And there was one day

  518. where it reached 120.

  519. So I need this to say

  520. if you were going

  521. to stick around,

  522. then you would need

  523. some shade.

  524. And God actually

  525. sends a little shade.

  526. Verse 6 tells us

  527. that the Lord God

  528. appointed a plant

  529. to come over Jonah

  530. to be shade over his head

  531. to save him

  532. from his discomfort.

  533. And he was exceedingly glad.

  534. There's another footnote

  535. that you probably have

  536. in your ESV

  537. that says that

  538. the Hebrew is the

  539. kikayon

  540. or probably the

  541. castor oil plant.

  542. And there's the same

  543. word for plant

  544. we see later

  545. in Jonah.

  546. Some people

  547. who are more familiar

  548. with the KJV

  549. might know this word

  550. as a gourd.

  551. A gourd.

  552. Both of these plants

  553. are large leafy plants.

  554. The castor oil itself

  555. can grow up to

  556. 10 feet tall

  557. or more

  558. and it had leaves

  559. like these

  560. nine star maple leaves

  561. that could easily grow

  562. 18 inches in diameter.

  563. So it was very,

  564. very good shade.

  565. And there must have been

  566. something wrong

  567. about Jonah's booth

  568. or he must have been lazy

  569. in putting it together

  570. because when this plant

  571. sprung up

  572. it made him

  573. very happy.

  574. But unfortunately

  575. for Jonah

  576. his joy is short-lived.

  577. When dawn comes up

  578. the next day

  579. God appoints a worm

  580. that attacks the plant

  581. and it withers.

  582. And then the sun rises

  583. and a scorching

  584. east wind comes.

  585. These east winds

  586. would likely have picked up

  587. a great amount of heat

  588. just from traveling

  589. over hot deserts.

  590. There's a similar wind

  591. it's called the Sirocco

  592. it's kind of famous

  593. it goes over the

  594. Mediterranean

  595. sorry the Sahara

  596. into the Mediterranean

  597. and it's known to pick up

  598. enough heat and sand

  599. and speed

  600. that it actually strips

  601. paint from cars.

  602. Like that's how awful

  603. this wind is.

  604. So you know

  605. I know it's like

  606. 20 degrees now

  607. but try to imagine

  608. the feeling of being

  609. like on a hot beach

  610. and when you take off

  611. your flip-flops

  612. and you step in the

  613. burning sand

  614. well that's how

  615. Jonah's face felt.

  616. verse 8 reads

  617. that he was so

  618. so faint

  619. that he asked

  620. the Lord again

  621. that he might die

  622. and he said

  623. it's better for me

  624. to die than to live.

  625. And again

  626. God responds

  627. in a very similar fashion

  628. in verse 9

  629. he says

  630. do you do well

  631. to be angry

  632. for the plant?

  633. God asks

  634. essentially

  635. the same exact question

  636. but this time

  637. just about the plant.

  638. Now as a

  639. general Bible study

  640. and interpretation

  641. tip

  642. when you see

  643. something repeated

  644. especially almost verbatim

  645. and especially

  646. in a narrative

  647. that's a sign

  648. from the author

  649. to pay attention

  650. to what's happening here.

  651. It's kind of like

  652. when you have

  653. like a part of a

  654. theme song

  655. or a motif of a song

  656. that plays

  657. at various parts

  658. of a movie

  659. to tie things together

  660. it's something

  661. that sticks out

  662. that's meant

  663. to catch our attention

  664. and here

  665. what sticks out

  666. is that

  667. God finally catches

  668. Jonah's attention.

  669. First Jonah

  670. doesn't actually

  671. answer God

  672. but this time

  673. he does

  674. and what does he say?

  675. Yes.

  676. He admits it.

  677. I do well to be angry.

  678. Angry enough to die.

  679. So there is something

  680. sad about

  681. seeing plants die

  682. if you walk along

  683. Cambridge Street

  684. you know the city

  685. of Cambridge

  686. puts out

  687. these flower pots

  688. that in the spring

  689. that they have to

  690. take down every winter

  691. because they brown

  692. and willed

  693. and become really depressing

  694. and there might be

  695. a little bit of that

  696. happening here with Jonah

  697. but I think it's clear

  698. from the context

  699. that the plant

  700. was important to him

  701. because it gave him shade.

  702. You know his fickle heart

  703. had just easily

  704. just attached itself

  705. to that well-being

  706. of the plant

  707. because it gave him

  708. so much well-being.

  709. You know you can imagine

  710. if you went to Chipotle

  711. and got an extra

  712. you know

  713. got an extra burrito bowl

  714. and you know

  715. you dropped by your friends

  716. and you gave it to them

  717. and they get angry at you

  718. and you're like

  719. what's going on?

  720. They're like

  721. you didn't give me

  722. the free tortilla

  723. and you're like

  724. come on man

  725. like it was free

  726. like why does this

  727. matter to you

  728. all of a sudden?

  729. Like this isn't something

  730. to get worked up over.

  731. I imagine that's how

  732. Jonah is feeling

  733. for this plant

  734. and the plant withers

  735. and so does Jonah

  736. and finally he's willing

  737. to speak to God.

  738. I want to take

  739. a little time here

  740. and just

  741. talk about the sovereignty

  742. of God

  743. and how he does work

  744. to get

  745. not just Jonah's attention

  746. but also

  747. our attention.

  748. Over and over again

  749. in this book

  750. God demonstrates

  751. his sovereignty

  752. on full display.

  753. Storms, seas

  754. and big fish

  755. all listen to him

  756. and now

  757. plants, worms, winds

  758. and the sun itself

  759. all move

  760. to make Jonah

  761. angry.

  762. And

  763. I do want to

  764. say that

  765. God is

  766. not tempted

  767. with evil.

  768. He is not

  769. does not do any evil

  770. and nor can he be

  771. tempted by evil

  772. nor does he tempt us

  773. but he can

  774. allow us to be

  775. tempted.

  776. And so here

  777. with regard to

  778. the temptation

  779. to anger

  780. we see him

  781. working

  782. with Jonah.

  783. Now have you

  784. ever considered

  785. in your own life

  786. that maybe

  787. God is trying

  788. to get you

  789. your attention

  790. through something

  791. that's making you angry?

  792. are there

  793. scorching winds

  794. and searing suns

  795. in your life?

  796. One common

  797. source of anger

  798. I think

  799. are people

  800. who refuse

  801. to follow

  802. our schedules

  803. and our times.

  804. Nothing is more

  805. responsive than

  806. an unresponsive

  807. nothing is more

  808. frustrating than

  809. an unresponsive

  810. boss

  811. or

  812. an advisor

  813. an unresponsive

  814. child.

  815. God could be

  816. letting those

  817. people into

  818. your life

  819. to expose

  820. your idol

  821. of control

  822. of wanting

  823. to have

  824. everything

  825. your way

  826. when everything

  827. should go

  828. God's way.

  829. See before this

  830. this was a

  831. one way

  832. conversation

  833. between Jonah

  834. and God.

  835. He spoke

  836. didn't care

  837. if God

  838. had anything

  839. to say

  840. and

  841. so

  842. God might

  843. be

  844. sending

  845. things

  846. in your

  847. life

  848. to get

  849. you to

  850. pay

  851. attention

  852. to

  853. what

  854. he's

  855. saying.

  856. You might

  857. be sitting

  858. here

  859. and you

  860. might

  861. think

  862. I don't

  863. really

  864. struggle

  865. with

  866. anger

  867. not as

  868. angry

  869. as Jonah

  870. not angry

  871. enough

  872. to die

  873. but

  874. anger

  875. wears

  876. many masks

  877. and each

  878. of these

  879. different

  880. types

  881. of anger

  882. actually

  883. points

  884. to a

  885. different

  886. heart

  887. issue

  888. or

  889. very

  890. similar

  891. heart

  892. issues.

  893. For

  894. example

  895. annoyance.

  896. We are

  897. annoyed

  898. when

  899. people

  900. who

  901. are

  902. just

  903. beneath

  904. us

  905. not

  906. worth

  907. our

  908. time

  909. take

  910. up

  911. our

  912. time.

  913. I

  914. think

  915. that

  916. points

  917. to

  918. pride

  919. in our

  920. hearts

  921. because

  922. we

  923. think

  924. our

  925. time

  926. is

  927. so

  928. valuable

  929. and

  930. everything

  931. else

  932. is

  933. below

  934. our

  935. pay

  936. grade.

  937. Bitterness

  938. points

  939. to

  940. a

  941. slow

  942. simmering

  943. anger

  944. that

  945. often

  946. represents

  947. discontentment.

  948. I use

  949. the word

  950. frustration

  951. before.

  952. Frustration

  953. is often

  954. just a

  955. politically

  956. correct

  957. and

  958. conversationally

  959. friendly

  960. way to

  961. say

  962. you're

  963. angry.

  964. Kosher.

  965. And

  966. it's also

  967. important to

  968. point out

  969. that

  970. one of the

  971. realities

  972. of anger

  973. is that

  974. when we

  975. are angry

  976. with fellow

  977. man

  978. or with

  979. our

  980. situations

  981. we're

  982. actually

  983. being angry

  984. with God.

  985. You think

  986. about jealousy.

  987. Are you

  988. jealous

  989. over

  990. someone's

  991. position

  992. over

  993. someone's

  994. relationship

  995. of how

  996. things are

  997. going in

  998. their lives?

  999. Well

  1000. that's

  1001. actually

  1002. anger

  1003. directed

  1004. at

  1005. God

  1006. for

  1007. saying

  1008. they

  1009. have

  1010. something

  1011. God

  1012. why

  1013. can't

  1014. you

  1015. give

  1016. me

  1017. that

  1018. same

  1019. thing?

  1020. Here

  1021. we see

  1022. Jonah's

  1023. anger

  1024. as a sign

  1025. that his

  1026. heart

  1027. was not

  1028. aligned

  1029. with God's.

  1030. But God

  1031. wants your

  1032. heart

  1033. to be

  1034. like his

  1035. to love

  1036. what is

  1037. good

  1038. like he

  1039. does.

  1040. And so

  1041. he reveals

  1042. his heart

  1043. to us

  1044. in these

  1045. last two

  1046. verses.

  1047. So in

  1048. verses 9

  1049. and 10

  1050. we see

  1051. God's

  1052. call to

  1053. put on

  1054. his

  1055. own

  1056. compassionate

  1057. heart.

  1058. The Lord

  1059. responds

  1060. to Jonah

  1061. now we

  1062. have a

  1063. conversation

  1064. and the

  1065. Lord said

  1066. you pity

  1067. the plant

  1068. for which

  1069. you did

  1070. not labor

  1071. nor did

  1072. you make

  1073. it grow

  1074. which came

  1075. into being

  1076. into a

  1077. night

  1078. and perished

  1079. in a

  1080. night.

  1081. And should

  1082. not I

  1083. pity

  1084. Nineveh

  1085. that great

  1086. city in

  1087. which there

  1088. are more

  1089. than 120

  1090. thousand

  1091. persons

  1092. who do

  1093. not know

  1094. their right

  1095. hand

  1096. from their

  1097. left

  1098. and also

  1099. much

  1100. cattle.

  1101. In these

  1102. verses

  1103. God gets

  1104. to the

  1105. crux

  1106. of the

  1107. issue

  1108. the

  1109. heart

  1110. of the

  1111. matter

  1112. the

  1113. heart

  1114. of the

  1115. book

  1116. of

  1117. Jonah

  1118. you know

  1119. some

  1120. people

  1121. you can

  1122. imagine

  1123. Jonah

  1124. easily

  1125. ending

  1126. at

  1127. the

  1128. end

  1129. of

  1130. chapter

  1131. three

  1132. and it

  1133. would

  1134. have

  1135. been

  1136. a

  1137. nice

  1138. little

  1139. story

  1140. but this

  1141. is

  1142. what

  1143. it's

  1144. actually

  1145. about

  1146. it's

  1147. about

  1148. the

  1149. hearts

  1150. you know

  1151. God

  1152. says to

  1153. Jonah

  1154. you didn't

  1155. work

  1156. for the

  1157. plant

  1158. you didn't

  1159. do the

  1160. toil

  1161. and labor

  1162. that it

  1163. takes

  1164. to make

  1165. a

  1166. plant

  1167. some

  1168. of

  1169. them

  1170. have

  1171. been

  1172. with

  1173. us

  1174. for

  1175. like

  1176. eight

  1177. years

  1178. they've

  1179. been

  1180. through

  1181. ups

  1182. and downs

  1183. and we've

  1184. watered

  1185. them

  1186. like every

  1187. two

  1188. weeks

  1189. for

  1190. eight

  1191. years

  1192. and

  1193. they

  1194. have

  1195. sentimental

  1196. value

  1197. to me

  1198. but

  1199. Jonah

  1200. Jonah's

  1201. been

  1202. with

  1203. this

  1204. plant

  1205. for

  1206. like

  1207. a

  1208. day

  1209. plants

  1210. also come

  1211. and go

  1212. like a

  1213. breath

  1214. we saw

  1215. in I

  1216. think

  1217. the

  1218. call

  1219. to

  1220. worship

  1221. Psalm

  1222. 103

  1223. and

  1224. also

  1225. Jesus

  1226. mentions

  1227. in the

  1228. Sermon

  1229. on the

  1230. mount

  1231. plants

  1232. being alive

  1233. today

  1234. thrown

  1235. into

  1236. the

  1237. fire

  1238. the

  1239. next

  1240. they

  1241. just

  1242. come

  1243. and

  1244. go

  1245. they're

  1246. gone

  1247. so

  1248. Jonah

  1249. if

  1250. you're

  1251. going to

  1252. have

  1253. so much

  1254. pity

  1255. for

  1256. this

  1257. plant

  1258. which

  1259. isn't

  1260. worth

  1261. much

  1262. anyways

  1263. and

  1264. it's

  1265. not

  1266. worth

  1267. much

  1268. to

  1269. you

  1270. then

  1271. shouldn't

  1272. I

  1273. have

  1274. pity

  1275. for

  1276. Nineveh

  1277. also

  1278. you

  1279. see

  1280. this

  1281. mention

  1282. in

  1283. verse

  1284. 11

  1285. of

  1286. 120,000

  1287. persons

  1288. who do

  1289. not

  1290. know

  1291. the

  1292. right

  1293. from

  1294. the

  1295. left

  1296. some

  1297. commentators

  1298. take

  1299. this

  1300. to say

  1301. that

  1302. it's

  1303. and

  1304. some

  1305. other

  1306. commentators

  1307. also

  1308. believe

  1309. that

  1310. this

  1311. is

  1312. a

  1313. reference

  1314. to

  1315. people

  1316. who

  1317. are

  1318. morally

  1319. lost

  1320. in

  1321. general

  1322. who

  1323. do

  1324. not

  1325. know

  1326. God

  1327. and

  1328. that

  1329. two

  1330. word

  1331. pair

  1332. of

  1333. knowing

  1334. between

  1335. occurs

  1336. in

  1337. 2

  1338. Samuel

  1339. 1935

  1340. where

  1341. an

  1342. 80

  1343. year

  1344. old

  1345. man

  1346. says

  1347. can I

  1348. not

  1349. discern

  1350. between

  1351. what

  1352. is

  1353. pleasant

  1354. and

  1355. not

  1356. and

  1357. he's

  1358. actually

  1359. being

  1360. rhetorical

  1361. because

  1362. he's

  1363. too old

  1364. to

  1365. enjoy

  1366. music

  1367. and

  1368. food

  1369. and

  1370. also

  1371. Ecclesiastes

  1372. 10

  1373. when you

  1374. see

  1375. in

  1376. the

  1377. Bible

  1378. a

  1379. contrast

  1380. between

  1381. the

  1382. right

  1383. hand

  1384. and

  1385. the

  1386. left

  1387. hand

  1388. not

  1389. just

  1390. talking

  1391. about

  1392. both

  1393. hands

  1394. but

  1395. a

  1396. contrast

  1397. then

  1398. usually

  1399. the

  1400. right

  1401. hand

  1402. is

  1403. the

  1404. good

  1405. hand

  1406. and

  1407. the

  1408. left

  1409. hand

  1410. is

  1411. the

  1412. negative

  1413. hand

  1414. so

  1415. I

  1416. think

  1417. this

  1418. is

  1419. just

  1420. a

  1421. reference

  1422. to

  1423. all

  1424. the

  1425. people

  1426. there

  1427. in

  1428. the

  1429. city

  1430. who

  1431. do

  1432. not

  1433. know

  1434. God

  1435. and

  1436. you

  1437. know

  1438. though

  1439. they

  1440. may

  1441. be

  1442. lost

  1443. and

  1444. they

  1445. may

  1446. be

  1447. wicked

  1448. every

  1449. single

  1450. one

  1451. of

  1452. those

  1453. people

  1454. was

  1455. still

  1456. according

  1457. to

  1458. Psalm

  1459. 103

  1460. fearfully

  1461. and

  1462. wonderfully

  1463. made

  1464. by

  1465. God

  1466. knit

  1467. together

  1468. in

  1469. their

  1470. mother's

  1471. womb

  1472. on top

  1473. of that

  1474. God

  1475. has put

  1476. his

  1477. image

  1478. into

  1479. man

  1480. every

  1481. single

  1482. one

  1483. of

  1484. those

  1485. 120

  1486. thousand

  1487. people

  1488. is

  1489. a

  1490. slice

  1491. of

  1492. God's

  1493. infinite

  1494. glory

  1495. and

  1496. worth

  1497. he

  1498. cares

  1499. for

  1500. them

  1501. he

  1502. even

  1503. cares

  1504. for

  1505. the

  1506. cattle

  1507. the

  1508. wildlife

  1509. you

  1510. know

  1511. they

  1512. aren't

  1513. as

  1514. important

  1515. as

  1516. humans

  1517. like

  1518. we

  1519. eat

  1520. beef

  1521. God

  1522. tells

  1523. us

  1524. we

  1525. can

  1526. eat

  1527. the

  1528. animals

  1529. in

  1530. Noah

  1531. 6

  1532. or

  1533. sorry

  1534. Genesis

  1535. after

  1536. the

  1537. flood

  1538. but

  1539. he

  1540. still

  1541. created

  1542. them

  1543. on

  1544. the

  1545. sixth

  1546. day

  1547. he

  1548. made

  1549. the

  1550. animals

  1551. and

  1552. he

  1553. saw

  1554. that

  1555. they

  1556. were

  1557. good

  1558. he

  1559. tells

  1560. Adam

  1561. to

  1562. name

  1563. them

  1564. and

  1565. then

  1566. he

  1567. tells

  1568. Adam

  1569. to

  1570. steward

  1571. them

  1572. to

  1573. make

  1574. them

  1575. multiply

  1576. so

  1577. even

  1578. the

  1579. cattle

  1580. the

  1581. cows

  1582. have

  1583. a

  1584. place

  1585. in

  1586. God's

  1587. heart

  1588. and

  1589. I

  1590. think

  1591. it's

  1592. obvious

  1593. to

  1594. all

  1595. of

  1596. us

  1597. here

  1598. that

  1599. human

  1600. life

  1601. is

  1602. more

  1603. valuable

  1604. than

  1605. plants

  1606. no one

  1607. thinks

  1608. twice

  1609. about

  1610. eating

  1611. a

  1612. salad

  1613. or

  1614. feeding

  1615. your

  1616. cow

  1617. hay

  1618. but

  1619. on the

  1620. other

  1621. hand

  1622. we

  1623. have

  1624. Jonah

  1625. Jonah

  1626. Jonah

  1627. in

  1628. spite

  1629. of

  1630. the

  1631. fact

  1632. there

  1633. are

  1634. so

  1635. many

  1636. people

  1637. in

  1638. this

  1639. city

  1640. even

  1641. cattle

  1642. Jonah

  1643. only

  1644. cares

  1645. about

  1646. himself

  1647. look

  1648. at

  1649. the

  1650. phrase

  1651. that

  1652. uses

  1653. in

  1654. verse

  1655. 6

  1656. exceedingly

  1657. glad

  1658. you

  1659. might

  1660. have

  1661. noticed

  1662. that

  1663. repetition

  1664. I

  1665. told

  1666. you

  1667. to

  1668. look

  1669. out

  1670. for

  1671. that

  1672. exceedingly

  1673. glad

  1674. is

  1675. actually

  1676. the

  1677. Hebrew

  1678. construct

  1679. is the

  1680. same

  1681. as

  1682. in

  1683. verse

  1684. 1

  1685. where

  1686. we

  1687. see

  1688. it

  1689. displeased

  1690. Jonah

  1691. exceedingly

  1692. and I

  1693. think

  1694. what the

  1695. author

  1696. wants

  1697. to see

  1698. is the

  1699. irony

  1700. of

  1701. the

  1702. situation

  1703. Jonah

  1704. was

  1705. exceedingly

  1706. angry

  1707. when God

  1708. would not

  1709. destroy

  1710. the city

  1711. full of

  1712. people

  1713. precious

  1714. people

  1715. made

  1716. in the

  1717. image

  1718. of

  1719. God

  1720. but

  1721. he

  1722. was

  1723. exceedingly

  1724. glad

  1725. or

  1726. yes

  1727. when

  1728. God

  1729. saved

  1730. him

  1731. just

  1732. from

  1733. a

  1734. little

  1735. heat

  1736. he

  1737. was

  1738. angry

  1739. angry

  1740. enough

  1741. to

  1742. die

  1743. because

  1744. God

  1745. removed

  1746. a

  1747. little

  1748. shade

  1749. from

  1750. him

  1751. and

  1752. angry

  1753. angry

  1754. enough

  1755. to

  1756. die

  1757. because

  1758. God

  1759. would

  1760. not

  1761. rain

  1762. fire

  1763. on

  1764. the

  1765. Ninevites

  1766. what a

  1767. guy

  1768. but

  1769. it's

  1770. easy

  1771. for our

  1772. hearts

  1773. to also

  1774. make

  1775. this

  1776. miscalculation

  1777. as a

  1778. parent

  1779. it's

  1780. easy

  1781. to be

  1782. mad

  1783. at

  1784. children

  1785. for

  1786. example

  1787. you

  1788. know

  1789. we

  1790. can

  1791. pity

  1792. our

  1793. sleep

  1794. our

  1795. time

  1796. our

  1797. comfort

  1798. these

  1799. are

  1800. all

  1801. things

  1802. that

  1803. children

  1804. have

  1805. no

  1806. pity

  1807. for

  1808. and

  1809. we

  1810. can

  1811. be

  1812. exceedingly

  1813. angry

  1814. when

  1815. children

  1816. take

  1817. those

  1818. things

  1819. from

  1820. us

  1821. instead

  1822. of

  1823. being

  1824. exceedingly

  1825. glad

  1826. that

  1827. we

  1828. have

  1829. children

  1830. they're

  1831. precious

  1832. in

  1833. the

  1834. sight

  1835. of

  1836. God

  1837. another

  1838. thing

  1839. that

  1840. magnifies

  1841. the

  1842. irony

  1843. of

  1844. this

  1845. situation

  1846. is

  1847. that

  1848. God

  1849. had

  1850. given

  1851. Jonah

  1852. a

  1853. second

  1854. chance

  1855. I

  1856. mean

  1857. even

  1858. the

  1859. sailors

  1860. they

  1861. didn't

  1862. want

  1863. to

  1864. throw

  1865. him

  1866. off

  1867. but

  1868. God

  1869. gives

  1870. him

  1871. a

  1872. second

  1873. chance

  1874. after

  1875. he

  1876. is

  1877. disobedient

  1878. he

  1879. saves

  1880. him

  1881. from

  1882. the

  1883. storm

  1884. and

  1885. recommissions

  1886. him

  1887. but

  1888. Jonah

  1889. will

  1890. not

  1891. extend

  1892. that

  1893. grace

  1894. to

  1895. others

  1896. he

  1897. simply

  1898. does

  1899. not

  1900. do

  1901. well

  1902. to

  1903. be

  1904. angry

  1905. so

  1906. what

  1907. does

  1908. he

  1909. do

  1910. verse

  1911. 12

  1912. tells

  1913. us

  1914. that

  1915. Jonah

  1916. repented

  1917. blessed

  1918. Nineveh

  1919. and

  1920. returned

  1921. to

  1922. Israel

  1923. actually

  1924. verse

  1925. 12

  1926. says

  1927. Jonah

  1928. cursed

  1929. God

  1930. in

  1931. his

  1932. heart

  1933. and

  1934. died

  1935. there

  1936. of

  1937. heat

  1938. stroke

  1939. I'm

  1940. kidding

  1941. I'm

  1942. not

  1943. adding

  1944. to

  1945. the

  1946. scriptures

  1947. I'm

  1948. not

  1949. cursed

  1950. we're

  1951. left

  1952. with

  1953. this

  1954. cliffhanger

  1955. for

  1956. a

  1957. reason

  1958. and

  1959. the

  1960. reason

  1961. is

  1962. the

  1963. reason

  1964. we

  1965. don't

  1966. know

  1967. what

  1968. happens

  1969. to

  1970. Jonah

  1971. is

  1972. because

  1973. the

  1974. author

  1975. is

  1976. not

  1977. concerned

  1978. with

  1979. that

  1980. what

  1981. we

  1982. do

  1983. need

  1984. to

  1985. know

  1986. is

  1987. that

  1988. Jonah

  1989. is

  1990. given

  1991. a

  1992. choice

  1993. so

  1994. I

  1995. want

  1996. you

  1997. to

  1998. think

  1999. back

  2000. in

  2001. the

  2002. scriptures

  2003. to

  2004. someone

  2005. else

  2006. who

  2007. God

  2008. confronts

  2009. over

  2010. their

  2011. anger

  2012. very

  2013. early

  2014. in

  2015. the

  2016. Bible

  2017. it's

  2018. actually

  2019. the

  2020. story

  2021. of

  2022. Cain

  2023. so

  2024. if

  2025. you

  2026. turn

  2027. to

  2028. Genesis

  2029. 4

  2030. you

  2031. can

  2032. see

  2033. this

  2034. this

  2035. is

  2036. the

  2037. story

  2038. of

  2039. Cain

  2040. and

  2041. Abel

  2042. another

  2043. famous

  2044. Bible

  2045. story

  2046. Cain

  2047. is

  2048. the

  2049. older

  2050. brother

  2051. and

  2052. he

  2053. either

  2054. procrastinates

  2055. or doesn't

  2056. give his

  2057. best

  2058. to

  2059. God

  2060. but

  2061. Abel

  2062. the

  2063. younger

  2064. brother

  2065. gives

  2066. the

  2067. best

  2068. of his

  2069. flock

  2070. as a

  2071. sacrifice

  2072. to

  2073. the

  2074. Lord

  2075. the

  2076. Lord

  2077. is

  2078. pleased

  2079. with

  2080. his

  2081. sacrifice

  2082. but

  2083. Genesis

  2084. 4

  2085. 5

  2086. says

  2087. that

  2088. the

  2089. Lord

  2090. for

  2091. Cain

  2092. and

  2093. his

  2094. offering

  2095. had

  2096. no

  2097. regard

  2098. this

  2099. is

  2100. Genesis

  2101. 4

  2102. 5

  2103. and

  2104. Cain

  2105. was

  2106. very

  2107. angry

  2108. and

  2109. his

  2110. face

  2111. fell

  2112. and

  2113. the

  2114. Lord

  2115. said

  2116. to

  2117. Cain

  2118. listen

  2119. to

  2120. this

  2121. why

  2122. are

  2123. you

  2124. angry

  2125. and

  2126. why

  2127. has

  2128. your

  2129. face

  2130. fallen

  2131. if

  2132. you

  2133. do

  2134. well

  2135. will

  2136. you

  2137. not

  2138. be

  2139. accepted

  2140. if

  2141. you

  2142. do

  2143. not

  2144. do

  2145. well

  2146. sin

  2147. is

  2148. and

  2149. you

  2150. can

  2151. just

  2152. read

  2153. the rest

  2154. of the

  2155. story

  2156. in your

  2157. own

  2158. time

  2159. but

  2160. Cain

  2161. doesn't

  2162. do

  2163. well

  2164. he

  2165. lets

  2166. his

  2167. anger

  2168. take

  2169. over

  2170. him

  2171. and

  2172. he

  2173. kills

  2174. his

  2175. brother

  2176. and

  2177. is

  2178. cursed

  2179. and

  2180. sent

  2181. out

  2182. and

  2183. he

  2184. goes

  2185. away

  2186. from

  2187. the

  2188. presence

  2189. of

  2190. the

  2191. Lord

  2192. and

  2193. settles

  2194. in

  2195. the

  2196. land

  2197. of

  2198. Nod

  2199. east

  2200. of

  2201. Eden

  2202. there's

  2203. a lot

  2204. of

  2205. little

  2206. little

  2207. narrative

  2208. bits

  2209. that

  2210. kind

  2211. of

  2212. tie

  2213. Jonah

  2214. to

  2215. the

  2216. story

  2217. of

  2218. Cain

  2219. so

  2220. for

  2221. example

  2222. in

  2223. Jonah

  2224. 1

  2225. we

  2226. see

  2227. Jonah

  2228. try

  2229. to

  2230. escape

  2231. from

  2232. the

  2233. presence

  2234. of

  2235. the

  2236. Lord

  2237. and

  2238. you

  2239. see

  2240. he

  2241. sits

  2242. east

  2243. of

  2244. the

  2245. city

  2246. and

  2247. God

  2248. essentially

  2249. asks

  2250. him

  2251. the

  2252. exact

  2253. same

  2254. question

  2255. why

  2256. are

  2257. you

  2258. angry

  2259. so

  2260. God

  2261. gave

  2262. Cain

  2263. a

  2264. question

  2265. gave

  2266. him

  2267. a

  2268. choice

  2269. God

  2270. asked

  2271. Jonah

  2272. a

  2273. question

  2274. he

  2275. too

  2276. has

  2277. a

  2278. choice

  2279. and

  2280. we

  2281. as

  2282. readers

  2283. also

  2284. have

  2285. that

  2286. choice

  2287. and

  2288. God

  2289. asks

  2290. us

  2291. the

  2292. same

  2293. question

  2294. if

  2295. you

  2296. think

  2297. about

  2298. the

  2299. first

  2300. recipients

  2301. of

  2302. scripture

  2303. they

  2304. were

  2305. ancient

  2306. Israel

  2307. and

  2308. they

  2309. had

  2310. to

  2311. figure

  2312. out

  2313. how

  2314. they

  2315. would

  2316. respond

  2317. to

  2318. their

  2319. neighbors

  2320. they

  2321. were

  2322. surrounded

  2323. by

  2324. wicked

  2325. and

  2326. idolatrous

  2327. neighbors

  2328. violent

  2329. and would

  2330. do them

  2331. great

  2332. harm

  2333. how

  2334. would

  2335. they

  2336. act

  2337. towards

  2338. others

  2339. and

  2340. what

  2341. would

  2342. that

  2343. say

  2344. about

  2345. their

  2346. God

  2347. you

  2348. know

  2349. today

  2350. traditional

  2351. Jews

  2352. so

  2353. not all

  2354. Jews

  2355. actually

  2356. read

  2357. the

  2358. entire

  2359. book

  2360. of

  2361. Jonah

  2362. during

  2363. the

  2364. afternoon

  2365. prayer

  2366. on

  2367. Yom Kippur

  2368. which is

  2369. the day

  2370. of

  2371. atonement

  2372. and

  2373. it

  2374. kind

  2375. of

  2376. has

  2377. the

  2378. same

  2379. message

  2380. to

  2381. them

  2382. today

  2383. you

  2384. know

  2385. what

  2386. are

  2387. they

  2388. going

  2389. to

  2390. do

  2391. given

  2392. their

  2393. history

  2394. of

  2395. antisemitism

  2396. and

  2397. pain

  2398. but

  2399. we

  2400. as

  2401. Christians

  2402. on

  2403. this

  2404. side

  2405. of

  2406. the

  2407. cross

  2408. have

  2409. an

  2410. even

  2411. deeper

  2412. meaning

  2413. to

  2414. the

  2415. story

  2416. of

  2417. Jonah

  2418. because

  2419. God

  2420. has

  2421. not

  2422. only

  2423. pity

  2424. on

  2425. Jonah

  2426. and

  2427. Ninevites

  2428. but

  2429. pity

  2430. on

  2431. us

  2432. on

  2433. the

  2434. beloved

  2435. and

  2436. a

  2437. deep

  2438. pity

  2439. shown

  2440. to

  2441. us

  2442. through

  2443. the

  2444. compassion

  2445. of

  2446. Jesus

  2447. Christ

  2448. so

  2449. we can

  2450. turn

  2451. to look

  2452. at

  2453. God's

  2454. compassion

  2455. of us

  2456. so

  2457. we

  2458. we

  2459. do

  2460. not

  2461. do

  2462. well

  2463. to

  2464. be

  2465. angry

  2466. but

  2467. there

  2468. is

  2469. one

  2470. who

  2471. is

  2472. right

  2473. who

  2474. is

  2475. in

  2476. the

  2477. right

  2478. to

  2479. be

  2480. angry

  2481. and

  2482. that

  2483. is

  2484. God

  2485. God

  2486. is

  2487. the

  2488. perfectly

  2489. just

  2490. God

  2491. he

  2492. knows

  2493. the

  2494. ins

  2495. and

  2496. out

  2497. of

  2498. every

  2499. situation

  2500. he

  2501. knows

  2502. every

  2503. broken

  2504. rule

  2505. every

  2506. broken

  2507. heart

  2508. he

  2509. is

  2510. the

  2511. one

  2512. who

  2513. is

  2514. slighted

  2515. when we

  2516. sin

  2517. against

  2518. his

  2519. perfect

  2520. holiness

  2521. and

  2522. in

  2523. his

  2524. perfect

  2525. goodness

  2526. he

  2527. cannot

  2528. stand

  2529. evil

  2530. he

  2531. cannot

  2532. stand

  2533. our

  2534. anger

  2535. even

  2536. and

  2537. as

  2538. the

  2539. one

  2540. who

  2541. created

  2542. us

  2543. God

  2544. has

  2545. the

  2546. right

  2547. to

  2548. enact

  2549. judgment

  2550. on us

  2551. to

  2552. destroy

  2553. his

  2554. body

  2555. and

  2556. soul

  2557. in

  2558. hell

  2559. but

  2560. what

  2561. does

  2562. he

  2563. do

  2564. to

  2565. his

  2566. enemies

  2567. what

  2568. does

  2569. God

  2570. do

  2571. to

  2572. those

  2573. who

  2574. are

  2575. against

  2576. him

  2577. you

  2578. know

  2579. we

  2580. see

  2581. a

  2582. taste

  2583. of

  2584. this

  2585. in

  2586. Jesus

  2587. Jesus

  2588. goes

  2589. to

  2590. Israel

  2591. that

  2592. idolatrous

  2593. nation

  2594. and he

  2595. says

  2596. to the

  2597. crowd

  2598. and he

  2599. sees

  2600. the

  2601. crowds

  2602. in

  2603. Matthew

  2604. 9

  2605. 36

  2606. he

  2607. says

  2608. he

  2609. had

  2610. compassion

  2611. for

  2612. them

  2613. because

  2614. they

  2615. were

  2616. harassed

  2617. and

  2618. helpless

  2619. like

  2620. sheep

  2621. without

  2622. a

  2623. shepherd

  2624. that

  2625. word

  2626. pity

  2627. just

  2628. means

  2629. to

  2630. look

  2631. upon

  2632. something

  2633. with

  2634. compassion

  2635. so

  2636. Jesus

  2637. pitied

  2638. the

  2639. crowd

  2640. because

  2641. they

  2642. were

  2643. like

  2644. dumb

  2645. sheep

  2646. just

  2647. wandering

  2648. around

  2649. not

  2650. knowing

  2651. where

  2652. to

  2653. go

  2654. Christ

  2655. describes

  2656. his

  2657. own

  2658. heart

  2659. he

  2660. says

  2661. he

  2662. is

  2663. gentle

  2664. and

  2665. lowly

  2666. of

  2667. heart

  2668. in

  2669. Matthew

  2670. 12

  2671. 20

  2672. he

  2673. declares

  2674. that

  2675. not

  2676. even

  2677. a

  2678. bruised

  2679. reed

  2680. he

  2681. will

  2682. break

  2683. or

  2684. a

  2685. smoldering

  2686. wick

  2687. he

  2688. will

  2689. not

  2690. quench

  2691. and

  2692. in

  2693. I guess

  2694. today's

  2695. words

  2696. he would

  2697. say

  2698. he's

  2699. kind

  2700. even

  2701. to

  2702. worthless

  2703. twigs

  2704. and

  2705. used

  2706. up

  2707. matches

  2708. just

  2709. the

  2710. refuse

  2711. of

  2712. the

  2713. world

  2714. this

  2715. is

  2716. God's

  2717. heart

  2718. in

  2719. Christ

  2720. came

  2721. he

  2722. showed

  2723. love

  2724. to

  2725. Israel

  2726. the

  2727. nation

  2728. of

  2729. Jonah

  2730. that

  2731. had

  2732. turned

  2733. away

  2734. from

  2735. over

  2736. and

  2737. over

  2738. again

  2739. and

  2740. would

  2741. later

  2742. crucify

  2743. and

  2744. reject

  2745. him

  2746. they

  2747. were

  2748. his

  2749. enemies

  2750. and

  2751. we

  2752. sinners

  2753. were

  2754. enemies

  2755. of

  2756. God

  2757. but

  2758. God

  2759. showed

  2760. his

  2761. love

  2762. for

  2763. us

  2764. by

  2765. sending

  2766. his

  2767. son

  2768. as

  2769. an

  2770. atonement

  2771. for

  2772. our

  2773. sins

  2774. so

  2775. if

  2776. you

  2777. like

  2778. the

  2779. people

  2780. have

  2781. turned

  2782. from

  2783. your

  2784. own

  2785. evil

  2786. ways

  2787. and

  2788. turned

  2789. to

  2790. Christ

  2791. then

  2792. you

  2793. will

  2794. have

  2795. received

  2796. his

  2797. ultimate

  2798. compassion

  2799. because

  2800. God

  2801. instead

  2802. of

  2803. pouring

  2804. out

  2805. great

  2806. calamity

  2807. and

  2808. disaster

  2809. upon

  2810. your

  2811. head

  2812. which

  2813. my

  2814. head

  2815. which

  2816. we

  2817. all

  2818. rightly

  2819. deserve

  2820. he

  2821. poured

  2822. it

  2823. out

  2824. on

  2825. Christ

  2826. Christ

  2827. died

  2828. on

  2829. the

  2830. cross

  2831. and

  2832. just

  2833. as

  2834. Jonah

  2835. was

  2836. in

  2837. the

  2838. belly

  2839. of

  2840. the

  2841. whale

  2842. three

  2843. days

  2844. and

  2845. three

  2846. nights

  2847. and

  2848. was

  2849. spit

  2850. out

  2851. onto

  2852. the

  2853. dry

  2854. land

  2855. Jesus

  2856. was

  2857. in

  2858. the

  2859. tomb

  2860. for

  2861. three

  2862. days

  2863. and

  2864. three

  2865. nights

  2866. and

  2867. was

  2868. spit

  2869. up

  2870. by

  2871. death

  2872. back

  2873. to

  2874. life

  2875. he

  2876. now

  2877. stands

  2878. alive

  2879. and

  2880. ascended

  2881. at

  2882. the

  2883. right

  2884. hand

  2885. of

  2886. God

  2887. as

  2888. your

  2889. shade

  2890. in

  2891. the

  2892. shadow

  2893. of

  2894. Christ's

  2895. wings

  2896. you

  2897. will

  2898. find

  2899. refuge

  2900. and

  2901. you

  2902. will

  2903. find

  2904. a

  2905. refuge

  2906. to

  2907. protect

  2908. you

  2909. from

  2910. God's

  2911. burning

  2912. wrath

  2913. which

  2914. you

  2915. would

  2916. not

  2917. be

  2918. able

  2919. to

  2920. otherwise

  2921. withstand

  2922. and

  2923. now

  2924. that

  2925. you

  2926. are

  2927. saved

  2928. the

  2929. word

  2930. of

  2931. the

  2932. Lord

  2933. has

  2934. come

  2935. to

  2936. you

  2937. the

  2938. gospel

  2939. commission

  2940. sends

  2941. you

  2942. out

  2943. into

  2944. the

  2945. nations

  2946. these

  2947. wicked

  2948. nations

  2949. full

  2950. of

  2951. the

  2952. sinners

  2953. and

  2954. the

  2955. lost

  2956. this

  2957. nation

  2958. an

  2959. evil

  2960. generation

  2961. so

  2962. how

  2963. will

  2964. we

  2965. go

  2966. about

  2967. glorifying

  2968. God's

  2969. name

  2970. and

  2971. showing

  2972. other

  2973. people

  2974. the

  2975. compassion

  2976. of

  2977. God

  2978. you

  2979. know

  2980. we

  2981. are

  2982. called

  2983. Christians

  2984. which

  2985. literally

  2986. means

  2987. little

  2988. Christ

  2989. how

  2990. can

  2991. we

  2992. bear

  2993. his

  2994. name

  2995. well

  2996. then

  2997. John

  2998. 13

  2999. 34

  3000. tells

  3001. us

  3002. Jesus

  3003. says

  3004. to

  3005. his

  3006. disciples

  3007. a

  3008. new

  3009. commandment

  3010. I

  3011. give

  3012. to

  3013. you

  3014. that

  3015. you

  3016. love

  3017. one

  3018. another

  3019. just

  3020. as

  3021. I

  3022. have

  3023. loved

  3024. you

  3025. you

  3026. are

  3027. also

  3028. to

  3029. love

  3030. one

  3031. another

  3032. by

  3033. this

  3034. all

  3035. people

  3036. will

  3037. know

  3038. that

  3039. you

  3040. are

  3041. my

  3042. disciples

  3043. if

  3044. you

  3045. have

  3046. love

  3047. for

  3048. one

  3049. another

  3050. so

  3051. when

  3052. we

  3053. love

  3054. each

  3055. other

  3056. we

  3057. show

  3058. each

  3059. other

  3060. that

  3061. grace

  3062. that

  3063. God

  3064. has

  3065. shown

  3066. us

  3067. then

  3068. we

  3069. show

  3070. the

  3071. world

  3072. that

  3073. we

  3074. are

  3075. his

  3076. this

  3077. is

  3078. the

  3079. love

  3080. that

  3081. counts

  3082. others

  3083. interests

  3084. as more

  3085. important

  3086. than

  3087. our

  3088. own

  3089. that

  3090. puts

  3091. away

  3092. anger

  3093. and

  3094. puts

  3095. on

  3096. patience

  3097. patience

  3098. is

  3099. just

  3100. synonymous

  3101. with

  3102. long

  3103. suffering

  3104. so

  3105. when

  3106. your

  3107. spouse

  3108. or

  3109. your

  3110. coworker

  3111. your

  3112. brother

  3113. in

  3114. Christ

  3115. or

  3116. even

  3117. an

  3118. enemy

  3119. sins

  3120. against

  3121. you

  3122. not

  3123. just

  3124. once

  3125. but

  3126. for

  3127. the

  3128. umpteenth

  3129. time

  3130. will

  3131. you

  3132. be

  3133. forgetful

  3134. like

  3135. Jonah

  3136. or

  3137. will

  3138. you

  3139. lay

  3140. down

  3141. your

  3142. ego

  3143. your

  3144. self

  3145. righteousness

  3146. and

  3147. your

  3148. wounded

  3149. pride

  3150. and

  3151. instead

  3152. choose

  3153. to

  3154. love

  3155. and

  3156. serve

  3157. as

  3158. Christ

  3159. has

  3160. loved

  3161. and

  3162. served

  3163. you

  3164. when

  3165. you

  3166. show

  3167. that

  3168. love

  3169. the

  3170. world

  3171. will

  3172. know

  3173. who

  3174. you

  3175. are

  3176. now

  3177. I

  3178. want

  3179. to

  3180. just

  3181. take

  3182. a

  3183. little

  3184. time

  3185. to

  3186. talk

  3187. about

  3188. the

  3189. idea

  3190. of

  3191. righteous

  3192. anger

  3193. now

  3194. there

  3195. is

  3196. a

  3197. place

  3198. for

  3199. righteous

  3200. anger

  3201. it's

  3202. a

  3203. biblical

  3204. category

  3205. that

  3206. you know

  3207. you should

  3208. be

  3209. angry

  3210. at

  3211. sin

  3212. but

  3213. I

  3214. think

  3215. the

  3216. weight

  3217. of the

  3218. councils

  3219. is

  3220. to be

  3221. highly

  3222. suspicious

  3223. of

  3224. any

  3225. time

  3226. you

  3227. are

  3228. angry

  3229. and

  3230. you

  3231. want

  3232. to

  3233. do

  3234. something

  3235. about

  3236. it

  3237. James

  3238. 119

  3239. says

  3240. let

  3241. every

  3242. person

  3243. be

  3244. quick

  3245. to

  3246. hear

  3247. slow

  3248. to

  3249. speak

  3250. slow

  3251. to

  3252. anger

  3253. for

  3254. the

  3255. anger

  3256. of

  3257. man

  3258. does

  3259. not

  3260. produce

  3261. the

  3262. righteousness

  3263. of

  3264. God

  3265. so

  3266. you know

  3267. even

  3268. if you

  3269. think

  3270. your

  3271. righteousness

  3272. is

  3273. justified

  3274. I

  3275. want

  3276. you

  3277. to

  3278. search

  3279. yourself

  3280. because

  3281. you're

  3282. going

  3283. to

  3284. find

  3285. 99

  3286. times

  3287. out of

  3288. 100

  3289. that

  3290. it

  3291. really

  3292. isn't

  3293. but

  3294. one

  3295. of

  3296. the

  3297. things

  3298. that

  3299. is

  3300. very

  3301. dangerous

  3302. about

  3303. anger

  3304. is

  3305. that

  3306. it's

  3307. incredibly

  3308. deceptive

  3309. it's

  3310. about

  3311. justification

  3312. so

  3313. we

  3314. can

  3315. easily

  3316. justify

  3317. our

  3318. sin

  3319. and

  3320. being

  3321. angry

  3322. it's

  3323. kind

  3324. of

  3325. like

  3326. those

  3327. cartoons

  3328. where

  3329. the

  3330. screen

  3331. turns red

  3332. and you

  3333. can't

  3334. really

  3335. see

  3336. and you

  3337. get

  3338. tunnel

  3339. vision

  3340. you

  3341. lose

  3342. sight

  3343. of

  3344. your

  3345. own

  3346. sin

  3347. and

  3348. can

  3349. only

  3350. think

  3351. about

  3352. other

  3353. people's

  3354. you

  3355. know

  3356. I

  3357. used

  3358. to

  3359. get

  3360. angry

  3361. when

  3362. people

  3363. show

  3364. up

  3365. late

  3366. to

  3367. things

  3368. I

  3369. would

  3370. plan

  3371. and

  3372. I

  3373. was

  3374. like

  3375. come

  3376. on

  3377. this

  3378. is

  3379. like

  3380. my

  3381. time

  3382. this

  3383. is

  3384. so

  3385. important

  3386. why

  3387. would

  3388. you

  3389. show

  3390. up

  3391. late

  3392. but

  3393. then

  3394. I

  3395. was

  3396. also

  3397. late

  3398. to

  3399. other

  3400. people's

  3401. stuff

  3402. there's

  3403. a story

  3404. this

  3405. past

  3406. month

  3407. of

  3408. a

  3409. McDonald's

  3410. customer

  3411. in

  3412. Atlanta

  3413. who

  3414. got

  3415. into

  3416. an

  3417. argument

  3418. because

  3419. her

  3420. order

  3421. was

  3422. missing

  3423. food

  3424. and

  3425. she

  3426. pulled

  3427. out

  3428. a

  3429. gun

  3430. and

  3431. shot

  3432. in

  3433. a

  3434. McDonald's

  3435. employee

  3436. to

  3437. death

  3438. I

  3439. can

  3440. assure

  3441. you

  3442. in

  3443. that

  3444. moment

  3445. when

  3446. she

  3447. pulled

  3448. that

  3449. trigger

  3450. she

  3451. thought

  3452. what

  3453. she

  3454. was

  3455. doing

  3456. was

  3457. perfectly

  3458. justified

  3459. she

  3460. pitied

  3461. her

  3462. missing

  3463. fries

  3464. but

  3465. not

  3466. pity

  3467. that

  3468. woman

  3469. so

  3470. I

  3471. think

  3472. if

  3473. you

  3474. look

  3475. back

  3476. in

  3477. times

  3478. in

  3479. your

  3480. life

  3481. when

  3482. you

  3483. were

  3484. angry

  3485. and

  3486. you

  3487. did

  3488. something

  3489. about

  3490. it

  3491. you

  3492. will

  3493. remember

  3494. that

  3495. in

  3496. that

  3497. moment

  3498. you

  3499. thought

  3500. it

  3501. was

  3502. right

  3503. it

  3504. was

  3505. good

  3506. but

  3507. do

  3508. not

  3509. be

  3510. deceived

  3511. who

  3512. knows

  3513. what

  3514. you

  3515. will

  3516. do

  3517. in

  3518. your

  3519. anger

  3520. so

  3521. I

  3522. want

  3523. to

  3524. end

  3525. with

  3526. some

  3527. practical

  3528. tips

  3529. for

  3530. fighting

  3531. anger

  3532. in

  3533. our

  3534. own

  3535. lives

  3536. what

  3537. should

  3538. we

  3539. do

  3540. when

  3541. temptation

  3542. does

  3543. come

  3544. our

  3545. way

  3546. I

  3547. think

  3548. the

  3549. first

  3550. thing

  3551. to

  3552. do

  3553. is

  3554. remember

  3555. what

  3556. Christ

  3557. has

  3558. done

  3559. for

  3560. you

  3561. he

  3562. has

  3563. shown

  3564. you

  3565. great

  3566. compassion

  3567. let

  3568. us

  3569. show

  3570. that

  3571. compassion

  3572. to

  3573. others

  3574. a

  3575. second

  3576. tip

  3577. is

  3578. to

  3579. remember

  3580. that

  3581. vengeance

  3582. is

  3583. if

  3584. you

  3585. look

  3586. throughout

  3587. the

  3588. Old

  3589. Testament

  3590. and

  3591. sometimes

  3592. in

  3593. the

  3594. New

  3595. Testament

  3596. you

  3597. see

  3598. that

  3599. God

  3600. does

  3601. reveal

  3602. his

  3603. wrath

  3604. he

  3605. does

  3606. burn

  3607. down

  3608. the

  3609. cities

  3610. of

  3611. Sodom

  3612. and

  3613. Gomorrah

  3614. and

  3615. various

  3616. other

  3617. peoples

  3618. who

  3619. sin

  3620. against

  3621. him

  3622. but

  3623. that's

  3624. his

  3625. domain

  3626. that's

  3627. his

  3628. right

  3629. that's

  3630. his

  3631. prerogative

  3632. because

  3633. he

  3634. is

  3635. God

  3636. rather

  3637. he

  3638. tells

  3639. us

  3640. that

  3641. when

  3642. we

  3643. are

  3644. sin

  3645. against

  3646. we

  3647. ought

  3648. to

  3649. not

  3650. repay

  3651. evil

  3652. for

  3653. evil

  3654. to

  3655. live

  3656. peaceably

  3657. with

  3658. all

  3659. if

  3660. your

  3661. enemy

  3662. is

  3663. hungry

  3664. feed

  3665. him

  3666. if

  3667. he

  3668. is

  3669. thirsty

  3670. give

  3671. him

  3672. something

  3673. to

  3674. drink

  3675. by

  3676. so

  3677. doing

  3678. you

  3679. will

  3680. heap

  3681. burning

  3682. coals

  3683. on

  3684. his

  3685. head

  3686. do

  3687. not

  3688. overcome

  3689. by

  3690. evil

  3691. but

  3692. overcome

  3693. evil

  3694. with

  3695. good

  3696. the

  3697. idea

  3698. of

  3699. heaping

  3700. burning

  3701. coals on

  3702. the head

  3703. I think

  3704. it's

  3705. related to

  3706. repentance

3707. you want to get them to repent

3708. and that's what we do when we let God take vengeance

3709. a third tip is to be careful of an inflammatory diet

3710. and I'm speaking figuratively of course

3711. it is an open secret that the tech industry which is a linchpin of our economy

3712. and our culture runs on anger

3713. everyone knows that the easiest way to make click to get clicks to get followers

  3714. engagement

3715. is to feed people their own self-righteous anger

3716. if you have ever read the news

  3717. ever followed any

  3718. political

3719. like you know content creator anywhere

3720. you would know that this is the trend

3721. so be careful what you consume

3722. is your time on your phone

  3723. inflaming your soul

  3724. or

3725. would you rather be spending time in the word

  3726. spend time with Christ

  3727. and drink from

  3728. the refreshing

  3729. the peaceful

  3730. living waters of Christ

  3731. and you'll find

  3732. your anger will subside

  3733. and lastly

3734. I want to repeat this

  3735. to remember

  3736. the plant of Jonah

  3737. you know

  3738. maybe God

  3739. has

  3740. sent

  3741. a worm

  3742. to wither

  3743. your vine

3744. and the sun to scorch your head

  3745. to get your attention

3746. that there is something going on inside

3747. the thing that is wrong

  3748. is not with God

3749. or with the people around you

  3750. but

  3751. but in here

  3752. so those are

  3753. the four tips

  3754. about dealing with anger

  3755. now

  3756. there will be

  3757. a day

  3758. when God's patience

  3759. is filled up

  3760. his perfect patience

3761. will come to an end

  3762. and he will reveal

  3763. his perfect wrath

  3764. on the entire earth

3765. we've been reading about it

  3766. in Revelation

  3767. it will be something

3768. that you cannot hide from

  3769. no one

  3770. can hide from

  3771. because

  3772. if you

3773. go back to Exodus 34

  3774. which

  3775. which Jonah quoted

  3776. actually

  3777. in 4.1

3778. the beginning of chapter 4

  3779. the description of God's

  3780. name goes on

  3781. he is the

  3782. God who shows

  3783. steadfast love

  3784. and graciousness

3785. but he is also the God

3786. who will by no means

  3787. clear the guilty

3788. if you have not repented

  3789. and turned to God

  3790. then your guilt

3791. is still on your own head

  3792. so today

  3793. you can repent

  3794. and God will relent

3795. and if you are in Christ

  3796. you can have hope

3797. because there will be a day

3798. when God will free us

  3799. he will give us

  3800. new hearts

  3801. that are free

  3802. from the self-centeredness

  3803. the pride

  3804. and the contempt

3805. that are at the root

  3806. of our anger

  3807. and our struggles

  3808. in this world

  3809. however

  3810. until that day

  3811. we live

  3812. clothed

  3813. still

  3814. in the dead flesh

  3815. and hearts

3816. that are so easily tempted

  3817. and so when anger

  3818. comes our way

  3819. when anger comes knocking

  3820. on our door

  3821. we have to answer

3822. the same question of Jonah

  3823. Jonah

3824. had a choice to deal

  3825. with anger

  3826. and so do you

  3827. God is asking you

  3828. when anger comes knocking

  3829. will you love

  3830. as I have loved

  3831. will you show compassion

3832. as I have shown compassion

3833. will you bear the name

  3834. of Cain

  3835. or of Christ

  3836. of Jonah

  3837. or Jesus

  3838. beloved

  3839. let us do well

  3840. and not be angry

  3841. let's pray

  3842. heavenly father

  3843. we thank you

  3844. for your patience

  3845. your perfect patience

3846. it is a marvelous mystery

  3847. that you

  3848. have forgiven us

  3849. your enemies

  3850. Lord I pray

  3851. that as ambassadors

3852. a priest of your name

  3853. to be a light

  3854. of the nations

  3855. we too

  3856. would show

  3857. that same compassion

  3858. pray this all

3859. in your son Jesus' name

  3860. amen
