  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. It's always such a joy to be able to worship with you guys on Sundays like this.

  3. Yeah, I'm always just so blessed by the loud voices that we sing our worship in.

  4. Yeah, truly just an honor to be with you.

  5. Please turn with me to Revelation chapter 11, verse 14 to 19.

    Revelation 11:14–19

  6. Since the fall, our church has been going through a series in Revelation.

  7. And this week we have reached, finally, the midpoint of the book.

  8. And so we find ourselves, once again, Revelation chapter 11, verse 14 to 19.

    Revelation 11:14–19

  9. Please, I want you to pray with me for the reading and the preaching of God's word.

  10. Heavenly Father, we just thank you so much for your word,

  11. which is breathed out by you, which seeks to instruct us, to guide us,

  12. to rebuke us and encourage us, and to fill us with hope of your coming kingdom.

  13. Lord, we thank you so much for your Holy Spirit, which illuminates scripture in our lives,

  14. that guides us in how to live out the gospel faithfully, even unto death.

  15. And Lord, we thank you for your Son, Jesus, whose name is above all names,

  16. whose name is sweeter than honey on our lips,

  17. whose name is like refreshing waters to our soul.

  18. Lord, we ask that your word speak to us this morning and remind us of your coming kingdom

  19. and all the implications behind that, both on this physical world

  20. and in terms of the eternal consequences, Lord.

  21. Be with us.

  22. I want your Spirit to speak to our hearts.

  23. We thank you.

  24. We love you.

  25. And we pray all of us in Jesus' name.

  26. Amen.

  27. If you are willing and able, please stand for the reading of God's word.

  28. Revelation chapter 11, verse 14 to 19.

    Revelation 11:14–19

  29. The second woe has passed.

  30. Behold, the third woe is soon to come.

  31. Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying,

  32. The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ,

  33. and he shall reign forever and ever.

  34. And the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God

  35. fell on their faces and worshipped God, saying,

  36. We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was,

  37. for you have taken your great power and begun to reign.

  38. The nations raged when your wrath came, and the time for the dead to be judged,

  39. and for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints, and those who fear your name,

  40. both small and great, and for destroying the destroyers of the earth.

  41. Then God's temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple.

  42. There were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail.

  43. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  44. You may be seated.

  45. When I first read this Revelation passage,

  46. a certain scene came to my mind from the movie Avengers Endgame.

  47. I thought of, specifically, the final battle,

  48. with that epic scene where all of the Marvel superheroes,

  49. they gather together to fight against the evil villain, Thanos.

  50. Captain America, he holds his hand down,

  51. Thor's hair comes rushing into his hand,

  52. and he calls out,

  53. Avengers!

  54. Assemble!

  55. I remember watching this movie at the theater,

  56. and as Captain America cried out this battle cry,

  57. chills went down my spine.

  58. And I wasn't alone.

  59. The entire theater was clapping and whistling and whooping,

  60. like, yeah!

  61. The Avengers are here!

  62. They're gonna win!

  63. And how can they not lose when they have all the heroes gathered together in one battlefield?

  64. But even with such an epic scene,

  65. there still is no guarantee that the Avengers would win.

  66. For another 30 minutes in the movie,

  67. the Avengers continue to struggle against Thanos,

  68. and we're still left in unsureness of the Avengers victory,

  69. until finally,

  70. Iron Man takes possession of the Infinity Stones

  71. and snaps his fingers to defeat Thanos

  72. and restore the world from the destroyer.

  73. This movie is five years old.

  74. If I'm spoiling anything,

  75. I'm not sorry.

  76. Going back to our Revelation passage,

  77. in John's vision here,

  78. God's triumphant kingdom and reign has come to the world.

  79. And without delay,

  80. the destroyers of the earth are destroyed,

  81. and those who have been faithful to the Lord are rewarded.

  82. And God's temple and His ark of His covenant,

  83. His presence is revealed for all to see.

  84. Unlike in Avengers Endgame,

  85. we have absolute confidence in the end of our story.

  86. That God will rule over the world.

  87. That He will avenge those who have been persecuted and killed in His name.

  88. And that He will judge with absolute justice

  89. those who deserve eternal life

  90. and those who deserve eternal death.

  91. There's no unsureness or insecurity about this.

  92. When the Lord's kingdom comes to earth,

  93. His victory and His reign is guaranteed.

  94. And so with this in mind,

  95. our main point of this passage is this.

  96. We should join in the worship of the Lord,

  97. knowing that He will destroy our destroyers

  98. and reward the faithful,

  99. and that His kingdom will come with His very presence.

  100. I'll be covering four points in this sermon.

  101. First, the third woe.

  102. Second, the worship of God and His Christ reign.

  103. Third, the wrath and reward of God.

  104. And fourth, God with us.

  105. Before I get into these four points,

  106. I wanted to do a recap of where we are in the book of Revelation.

  107. And so we're at the end of the seven trumpet judgments,

  108. which are a series of end-time judgments from God

  109. onto our wicked and idolatrous world.

  110. The fifth, sixth, and seventh trumpet blasts

  111. have been called the three woe judgments,

  112. as we see proclaimed by the eagle

  113. in Revelation 8, verse 13.

    Revelation 8:13

  114. It says,

  115. Woe, woe, woe to those who dwell on the earth

  116. at the blast of the other trumpets

  117. that the three angels are about to blow.

  118. Woe, woe, woe.

  119. Doom, doom, doom.

  120. These three final woes accentuate

  121. the increased intensity and severity of the judgments,

  122. leading to the climactic final judgment

  123. of God at the seventh trumpet.

  124. At the first woe, the fifth trumpet,

  125. a fallen star, presumably an evil angel or Satan,

  126. was given a key to the bottomless pit,

  127. from which demonic locusts flew out

  128. and tormented mankind for five months,

  129. to the point that men desired to die.

  130. But death continued to evade them.

  131. And then we see something even more intense.

  132. At the second woe, the sixth trumpet,

  133. four angels and their armies killed

  134. one-third of mankind,

  135. while the rest of mankind

  136. continued to be unrepentant of their sins.

  137. For 42 months, the wicked nations

  138. trampled over the courts outside of the city temple,

  139. and the two witnesses were killed

  140. for proclaiming the gospel,

  141. only to be resurrected by God

  142. three and a half days later.

  143. Then a great earthquake shook the city,

  144. killing 7,000 wicked people,

  145. and while the remaining survivors

  146. could do nothing but acknowledge God's power

  147. and be in awe of his judgment.

  148. All these events of the fifth and sixth trumpets

  149. lead to the blowing of the seventh and final trumpet,

  150. the third and final woe.

  151. If we look at the outline of Revelation

  152. that John had shared with us before,

  153. our passage of the seventh trumpet

  154. is right at the center of Revelation.

  155. We've reached the midpoint.

  156. John's vision in this passage

  157. will represent, as I said before,

  158. the climactic conclusion of God's judgment,

  159. in which God's kingdom comes down to earth

  160. and overtakes the kingdom of the world.

  161. And this leads to my first point,

  162. the third woe.

  163. Verse 14,

  164. The second woe has passed.

  165. Behold, the third woe is soon to come.

  166. While the fifth and sixth trumpet judgments

  167. had verses that signaled the first two woes

  168. in Revelation 9 and Revelation 11,

  169. there is no explicit mention in Scripture

  170. of the seventh trumpet being the third woe.

  171. Still, I think that there's strong evidence in the text

  172. that Revelation 11, chapter 14,

  173. I've heard verse 14 to 19,

  174. is indeed the third woe.

  175. For one thing, we have in verse 14,

  176. Behold, the third woe is soon to come.

  177. It's soon to come.

  178. Revelation 8 and Revelation 10

  179. also say that the woe judgments

  180. would occur at the final three blasts

  181. of the angels' trumpets,

  182. and that in the days of the trumpet call

  183. to be sounded by the seventh angel,

  184. the mystery of God would be fulfilled.

  185. The mystery of God from Revelation 10

  186. is God's kingdom being fully established on earth.

  187. The short and brief description

  188. of the seventh trumpet and the third woe

  189. compared to the other two woes

  190. should not undermine the ultimate severity

  191. of this passage.

  192. The seventh trumpet,

  193. which is supposed to be the most intense judgment

  194. that we have seen so far in Revelation,

  195. signifies the end of the end,

  196. the eschaton.

  197. This is the final judgment

  198. where the Lord brings his kingdom onto earth

  199. and immediately the living and the dead

  200. are judged for eternal reward

  201. or eternal death.

  202. This is final.

  203. And so what John sees

  204. in this vision of the seventh trumpet

  205. and the third woe judgment

  206. must have been both so glorious

  207. but also so terrifying

  208. that John cannot even describe in words

  209. what happens at the final judgment.

  210. This vision of judgment

  211. is far more intense

  212. than that of demonic locusts

  213. or the death of our two witnesses

  214. or the earthquake that killed 7,000 people.

  215. It's unspeakable.

  216. Church,

  217. the third woe

  218. is a reminder

  219. that we need to be considering

  220. the eternal consequences

  221. of how we live here in the present.

  222. There will come a day

  223. where we face

  224. either eternal joy

  225. and life

  226. that is beyond

  227. our ability to explain in words

  228. or eternal death

  229. and suffering

  230. that will render us speechless.

  231. But God is so gracious to us

  232. that he shows us

  233. through scripture

  234. how to follow

  235. the way to eternal joy

  236. and life in him.

  237. And that is through believing

  238. in Jesus Christ

  239. as our Lord

  240. and Savior.

  241. until the day

  242. that we are left

  243. awestruck

  244. and without words

  245. by God's glorious presence

  246. among us.

  247. Let's proclaim the gospel

  248. with our voices

  249. and with our lives

  250. to those around us

  251. being cognizant

  252. of the eternal consequences

  253. of the coming Lord

  254. and of his kingdom.

  255. This leads to my second point,

  256. the worship of God

  257. and his Christ frame.

  258. Verse 15,

  259. Then the seventh angel

  260. blew his trumpet

  261. and there were loud voices

  262. in heaven saying,

  263. The kingdom of the world

  264. has become the kingdom

  265. of our Lord

  266. and of his Christ

  267. and he shall reign

  268. forever and ever.

  269. The loud voices in heaven

  270. are most likely

  271. the same voices

  272. that cried out

  273. in Revelation chapter 7.

    Revelation 7 chapter mention

  274. Salvation belongs

  275. to our God

  276. who sits on the throne

  277. and to the Lamb.

  278. The heavenly voice

  279. of the declaration,

  280. it refers to

  281. the prophet Daniel

  282. vision in Daniel chapter 7.

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  283. Behold,

  284. with the clouds of heaven

  285. there came one

  286. like a son of man

  287. and he came

  288. to the ancient of days

  289. and was presented

  290. before him.

  291. And to him

  292. was given dominion

  293. and glory

  294. and a kingdom

  295. that all peoples,

  296. nations,

  297. and languages

  298. should serve him.

  299. His dominion

  300. is an everlasting dominion

  301. which will not pass away

  302. and his kingdom

  303. one that shall not

  304. be destroyed.

  305. this one

  306. like a son of man

  307. is Jesus Christ,

  308. the son of God

  309. and the promised king.

  310. During his life

  311. and ministry,

  312. Jesus proclaimed

  313. that the kingdom

  314. of God

  315. is near,

  316. is at hand.

  317. It was Jesus

  318. who inaugurated

  319. the kingdom of God

  320. and invited us

  321. into that kingdom

  322. by dying for us

  323. on the cross

  324. and resurrecting

  325. from the grave,

  326. thereby defeating

  327. Satan,

  328. sin,

  329. and death

  330. and adopting us

  331. into his kingdom.

  332. Now in this

  333. revelation vision,

  334. Christ has returned

  335. and the kingdom

  336. of God

  337. has been fully established

  338. here on earth

  339. just as Jesus

  340. had prophesied.

  341. The kingdom

  342. of the world

  343. which Satan

  344. had authority

  345. over for a time

  346. is now fully

  347. taken away

  348. from him.

  349. The kingdom

  350. of the world

  351. has become

  352. the kingdom

  353. of the Lord God

  354. and his Christ.

  355. While Satan's rule

  356. was only temporary

  357. for a time,

  358. God and Christ's rule

  359. will be forever

  360. and ever,

  361. marking the end

  362. of the age.

  363. Verse 16 and 17,

  364. And the 24 elders

  365. who sit on their thrones

  366. before God

  367. fell on their faces

  368. and worshipped God,

  369. saying,

  370. We give thanks to you,

  371. Lord God Almighty,

  372. who is and who was,

  373. for you have taken

  374. your great power

  375. and begun to reign.

  376. The 24 elders,

  377. as we see in Revelation

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  378. chapter 4,

  379. could be referring

  380. to the 12 tribes

  381. of Israel

  382. in the Old Testament

  383. and the 12 apostles

  384. in the New Testament.

  385. Altogether,

  386. all 24 elders

  387. represent

  388. the complete

  389. people of God,

  390. his community

  391. of believers.

  392. believers.

  393. The elders,

  394. having heard the proclamation

  395. from the voices in heaven,

  396. they fall from their thrones

  397. onto their faces

  398. and worship God,

  399. thanking him

  400. for consummating the kingdom,

  401. taking his great power

  402. and beginning to reign.

  403. And the elders say,

  404. We give thanks to you,

  405. Lord God Almighty,

  406. who is and who was.

  407. For those of us

  408. who may have grown up

  409. reading scripture,

  410. we're typically used

  411. to hearing this phrase

  412. in a threefold pattern,

  413. that God is the one

  414. who was,

  415. who is,

  416. and is to come.

  417. The threefold pattern

  418. describes God's sovereignty

  419. over all history,

  420. the past who was,

  421. the present who is,

  422. and the future

  423. who is to come.

  424. But in verse 17,

  425. the elders worship

  426. the Lord God Almighty,

  427. who is and who was.

  428. Where is who is to come?

  429. Well, the phrase

  430. who is to come

  431. is replaced

  432. with a different line.

  433. For you have taken

  434. your great power

  435. and begun to reign.

  436. If we put that entire sentence

  437. back together,

  438. the elders are thanking

  439. the Lord God Almighty,

  440. who is,

  441. who was,

  442. and has taken

  443. his great power

  444. and begun.

  445. to reign.

  446. The elders worship

  447. is emphasizing

  448. that the future,

  449. the God who is to come,

  450. is now here.

  451. God's people's hope

  452. of the future

  453. has come true

  454. because God

  455. has come down

  456. and he has begun

  457. to reign

  458. over the entire world.

  459. And because God's reign

  460. is eternal,

  461. there is no more future

  462. as we understand it

  463. in our human concept

  464. of time and history.

  465. God will reign forevermore

  466. and nothing will change

  467. or can change

  468. or alter that final reality.

  469. The elders have realized

  470. this amazing truth

  471. and they step off

  472. their thrones

  473. to bow down

  474. before God

  475. and worship.

  476. The first thing

  477. the elders say

  478. in their worship

  479. is,

  480. we give thanks

  481. to you, God.

  482. They give thanks

  483. for God's presence

  484. in the past,

  485. in the present,

  486. and in the future.

  487. Church,

  488. do we worship God

  489. in the same way?

  490. Do we think of God

  491. as being sovereign

  492. over the past,

  493. the present,

  494. and the future?

  495. Do we thank him

  496. for his presence

  497. in all three times?

  498. I'm going to confess

  499. this to you guys.

  500. Lately,

  501. I myself

  502. haven't been doing well

  503. in being thankful,

  504. especially in my own

  505. private,

  506. individual time.

  507. Outside of our

  508. Saturday community group

  509. or Wednesday night prayers,

  510. where we intentionally

  511. gathered to spend time

  512. to thank God together,

  513. I've been so lacking

  514. in posturing myself

  515. toward Thanksgiving.

  516. I've taken God's

  517. daily grace and mercy

  518. for me,

  519. for granted,

  520. as if God owed this to me.

  521. That's so far

  522. from the case

  523. because I'm a sinner

  524. also,

  525. who's indebted to God

  526. for saving me

  527. through Christ.

  528. And so,

  529. reading this passage

  530. of the elders'

  531. worship and thanksgiving

  532. to God

  533. makes me realize

  534. that just like the elders,

  535. I need to step off

  536. of my throne

  537. in humility

  538. before God.

  539. I want to bow down

  540. and worship,

  541. thanking God

  542. because he saved me.

  543. Back when I was

  544. 15 years old,

  545. he helped a self-destructive

  546. teenager like me

  547. encounter the great

  548. love of the Father.

  549. I want to thank God

  550. for how he continues

  551. to sustain me,

  552. and sanctify me today

  553. that I don't go back

  554. to my old ways of sin.

  555. And I want to thank God

  556. for how he will prevail

  557. in the end

  558. and bring his people

  559. into his eternal kingdom

  560. forevermore.

  561. God's ultimate reign

  562. has not yet come,

  563. but it's already

  564. been guaranteed

  565. to us.

  566. There are many of us here

  567. who long

  568. for this not-yet reality,

  569. but we face struggle

  570. in our lives

  571. because of the evil

  572. in our current world.

  573. some of us here

  574. may be feeling harassed

  575. by evildoers around us.

  576. Some of us

  577. may be weary

  578. from fighting

  579. our own sinful flesh

  580. and the devil.

  581. And some of us

  582. may be actively

  583. persecuted

  584. for our faith

  585. within our family,

  586. within our workplace,

  587. for those of us

  588. who may be overseas

  589. by the government.

  590. To those of you

  591. who are struggling

  592. in this way,

  593. God sees,

  594. hears,

  595. and knows

  596. of our hardships.

  597. Living in this space

  598. of not-yet

  599. really is difficult.

  600. But for this reason,

  601. God promises

  602. those who remain

  603. steadfast in him

  604. that there will be a day

  605. when that waiting

  606. is over

  607. and the long-awaited

  608. Christ is now here.

  609. This will be the sign

  610. and seal

  611. that God's kingdom

  612. has come

  613. to full reign

  614. and our trials

  615. will be met

  616. with great reward

  617. from God.

  618. So brothers and sisters,

  619. let thanksgiving

  620. be a daily discipline

  621. of how we worship God.

  622. Let's count it all joy

  623. when we meet trials

  624. of various kinds,

  625. clinging to Christ

  626. with thankful hearts

  627. as we wait on him

  628. to come.

  629. Psalm 107 says

  630. to give thanks

  631. to the Lord

  632. for he is good

  633. for his steadfast love

  634. endures forever.

  635. God's love for us

  636. has endured

  637. since the very beginning

  638. when he created

  639. the universe

  640. and his love

  641. stretches forward

  642. to all eternity

  643. long after this world

  644. has come to pass.

  645. Let's give thanks

  646. alongside all the saints

  647. and elders

  648. in worship

  649. to the Lord God Almighty

  650. who is

  651. and who was

  652. and who will

  653. take his great power

  654. and reign

  655. for all eternity.

  656. The 24 elders

  657. thank God

  658. and then

  659. they proclaim

  660. of the wrath

  661. and reward

  662. of God.

  663. Verse 18

  664. the nations

  665. raged

  666. but your wrath

  667. came

  668. and the time

  669. for the dead

  670. to be judged

  671. and for rewarding

  672. your servants

  673. the prophets

  674. and saints

  675. and those

  676. who fear your name

  677. both small

  678. and great

  679. and for destroying

  680. the destroyers

  681. of the earth.

  682. Verse 18

  683. starts and ends

  684. with the judgment

  685. of God's enemies

  686. as his wrath

  687. came upon

  688. the raging nations

  689. and he destroyed

  690. the destroyers

  691. of the earth

  692. and then in the middle

  693. there is an emphasis

  694. on the rewarding

  695. of the faithful.

  696. First I'll talk

  697. about the wrath

  698. and judgment

  699. of God's enemies.

  700. The image

  701. of the nations

  702. raging

  703. should again

  704. bring to mind

  705. the prophetic vision

  706. of Daniel chapter 7

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  707. in which the four

  708. terrible beasts

  709. each representing

  710. a tyrannical nation

  711. raged against Israel

  712. and God's people.

  713. And yet

  714. just as these four beasts

  715. were subdued

  716. by the son of man

  717. in Daniel 7

  718. the elders

  719. in Revelation 11

  720. proclaiming

  721. that God's wrath

  722. came upon

  723. these raging nations

  724. and he destroyed

  725. the destroyers

  726. of the earth.

  727. One of these

  728. raging nations

  729. in the Old Testament

  730. was Babylon.

  731. Jeremiah 51

    Jeremiah 51:25

  732. verse 25

  733. proclaims a prophecy

  734. against Babylon

  735. similar to the

  736. elders' proclamation

  737. here in Revelation 11.

  738. Behold,

  739. I am against you

  740. O destroying mountain

  741. declares the Lord

  742. which destroys

  743. the whole earth.

  744. I will stretch

  745. out my hand

  746. against you

  747. and roll you

  748. down from the

  749. crabs

  750. and make you

  751. a burnt mountain.

  752. God will destroy

  753. the destroying

  754. mountain

  755. that's destroyed

  756. up to earth

  757. Babylon

  758. and all the

  759. raging nations.

  760. And that's because

  761. God

  762. is infinitely

  763. fair

  764. and just.

  765. He will exact

  766. his judgment

  767. on the nations

  768. and the destroyers

  769. in an eye

  770. for an eye

  771. better.

  772. In last week's

  773. sermon,

  774. right before

  775. the seventh

  776. trumpet,

  777. a great

  778. earthquake

  779. killed 7,000

  780. wicked people

  781. who have killed

  782. the two witnesses

  783. of the gospel.

  784. The 7,000

  785. who were killed

  786. by the earthquake

  787. are equivalent

  788. to the 7,000

  789. faithful people

  790. who God

  791. had preserved

  792. in 2 Kings

    2 Kings 19 chapter mention

  793. chapter 19

  794. in the days

  795. of Elijah

  796. when they refused

  797. to bow down

  798. to the Babylonian

  799. idol.

  800. Here in verse 18,

  801. God's

  802. lex talionis,

  803. eye for an eye,

  804. judgment is again

  805. evident.

  806. In the original

  807. Greek,

  808. the words for

  809. rage and wrath

  810. come from the

  811. same root.

  812. And so God

  813. punished the raging

  814. nations with his

  815. own righteous

  816. rage.

  817. He punished the

  818. wrathful nations

  819. with his own

  820. wrath.

  821. The same goes

  822. for the word

  823. destroyers.

  824. God dealt

  825. with the

  826. destroyers of

  827. the earth

  828. by destroying

  829. them.

  830. He gave them

  831. a punishment

  832. worthy of

  833. their crimes.

  834. In a way,

  835. this is actually

  836. a pretty funny

  837. and ironic

  838. way for God's

  839. enemies to be

  840. finished off.

  841. The raging

  842. nations are

  843. ended by God's

  844. rage.

  845. The destroyers

  846. of the earth

  847. are destroyed.

  848. They had one

  849. job,

  850. and they got

  851. it back to

  852. them.

  853. They were

  854. beaten at

  855. their own

  856. game.

  857. It's like

  858. watching a

  859. pickpocket

  860. thief get

  861. pickpocketed

  862. himself.

  863. Or,

  864. you guys know

  865. of these

  866. YouTube videos

  867. where the

  868. YouTuber

  869. scam calls

  870. the scam

  871. callers?

  872. The panic

  873. and frustration

  874. on the scam

  875. callers' faces

  876. as they realize,

  877. oh my gosh,

  878. I'm about to

  879. lose $10,000

  880. or whatever.

  881. they've been

  882. bamboozled

  883. at their

  884. own expertise,

  885. and they've

  886. received punishment

  887. equal to their

  888. crimes.

  889. Psalm 2

  890. asks,

  891. why do the

  892. nations rage

  893. and the people

  894. plot in vain?

  895. The kings of the

  896. earth set

  897. themselves,

  898. and the rulers

  899. take counsel

  900. together against

  901. the Lord and

  902. his anointed.

  903. He who sits

  904. in the heavens

  905. laughs.

  906. the Lord

  907. holds them

  908. in duration.

  909. Then he will

  910. speak to them

  911. in his wrath

  912. and terrify

  913. them in his

  914. fury.

  915. It's like

  916. watching a

  917. colony of

  918. ants trying

  919. to topple

  920. over the

  921. empire state

  922. building.

  923. It's not

  924. going to

  925. happen.

  926. The wicked

  927. nations and

  928. the destroyers

  929. of the earth

  930. are doomed

  931. to fail.

  932. God will

  933. punish them

  934. accordingly.

  935. We too,

  936. then,

  937. can be

  938. reassured and

  939. endure

  940. when we

  941. are wronged,

  942. when we

  943. are defrauded,

  944. when we

  945. are unfairly

  946. treated by

  947. our destroyers

  948. because we

  949. know that

  950. God's justice

  951. will come.

  952. Verse 18

  953. also speaks

  954. of the time

  955. for the dead

  956. to be judged,

  957. which arrives

  958. as God's

  959. wrath comes.

  960. Daniel 12

  961. and Revelation

  962. 20 attest

  963. to the final

  964. judgment in

  965. which the dead

  966. are judged

  967. according to

  968. what they

  969. have done

  970. when they

  971. were alive.

  972. The destroyers

  973. of God's

  974. people and

  975. the unbelievers

  976. of Jesus

  977. Christ will

  978. be judged

  979. in front

  980. of the

  981. great white

  982. throne

  983. where the

  984. dead,

  985. great and

  986. small,

  987. stood before

  988. the throne

  989. and books

  990. were opened.

  991. Then another

  992. book was opened

  993. which is the

  994. book of life

  995. and the dead

  996. were judged

  997. by what was

  998. written in the

  999. books according

  1000. to what they

  1001. had done.

  1002. If anyone's

  1003. name was not

  1004. found written

  1005. in the book

  1006. of life,

  1007. he was thrown

  1008. into the

  1009. lake of fire.

  1010. Revelation 20

  1011. anyone who

  1012. is not in

  1013. Christ,

  1014. who does

  1015. not believe

  1016. in Christ,

  1017. is an

  1018. enemy of

  1019. God and

  1020. will not

  1021. find their

  1022. name written

  1023. in the book

  1024. of life and

  1025. will be cast

  1026. into the

  1027. lake of fire.

  1028. This is the

  1029. eternal suffering

  1030. that God's

  1031. enemies will

  1032. experience because

  1033. they were

  1034. idolatrous against

  1035. God and

  1036. his people and

  1037. they did not

  1038. believe in

  1039. Christ according

  1040. to the books

  1041. that testified

  1042. of their

  1043. action.

  1044. On the

  1045. other hand,

  1046. Revelation 11

    Revelation 11:18

  1047. verse 18 also

  1048. speaks of the

  1049. time in which

  1050. the faithful are

  1051. reborned,

  1052. servants,

  1053. prophets,

  1054. and saints,

  1055. and those who

  1056. fear God's

  1057. name, both

  1058. small and

  1059. brave.

  1060. I believe that

  1061. all of these

  1062. categories, the

  1063. servants, prophets,

  1064. saints, and those

  1065. who fear God's

  1066. name, are

  1067. referring to the

  1068. entire church of

  1069. God, all

  1070. believers.

  1071. believers.

  1072. As Christians, we

  1073. are called to be

  1074. servants to God

  1075. and his will.

  1076. Just like the two

  1077. witnesses who are

  1078. killed, the whole

  1079. church is called to

  1080. bear prophetic

  1081. witness of the

  1082. gospel to the

  1083. world, even if the

  1084. world should kill

  1085. us for our

  1086. testimony.

  1087. And by God's

  1088. grace, we have

  1089. been counted as

  1090. saints or holy

  1091. ones through

  1092. Christ's death and

  1093. resurrection.

  1094. resurrection.

  1095. And as followers

  1096. of Christ, we

  1097. fear and worship

  1098. God's name and

  1099. his name only.

  1100. There is no

  1101. other name.

  1102. Jesus.

  1103. If we are

  1104. indeed a church

  1105. and community of

  1106. believers, of

  1107. servants, prophets,

  1108. saints, and those

  1109. who fear God's

  1110. name, we will be

  1111. rewarded with the

  1112. eternal rewards of

  1113. heaven and the

  1114. eternal fellowship

  1115. with the Lord God

  1116. Almighty.

  1117. And also, as we

  1118. see here in verse

  1119. 18, surrounding the

  1120. promise of rewarding

  1121. the faithful, we'll

  1122. also receive and

  1123. witness great

  1124. vindication for the

  1125. tribulation and

  1126. persecution we

  1127. endured through our

  1128. witness of the

  1129. gospel.

  1130. In Revelation 6,

  1131. during the fifth

  1132. seal, the souls of

  1133. those who were

  1134. killed for their

  1135. witness of the

  1136. gospel cried out,

  1137. O sovereign Lord,

  1138. holy and true,

  1139. how long before you

  1140. will judge and

  1141. avenge our blood

  1142. on those who

  1143. dwell on the

  1144. earth.

  1145. And the Lord

  1146. responded by

  1147. clothing them in

  1148. white robes and

  1149. assuring them to

  1150. wait a little

  1151. longer.

  1152. God's final judgment

1153. on the dead here is

  1154. the climactic answer

  1155. to these martyrs'

  1156. prayers.

  1157. We as Christians

  1158. won't simply be

  1159. taken away by God

  1160. from the evil

  1161. things of the

  1162. world, but we

  1163. will witness God

  1164. vanquishing evil

  1165. through his

  1166. judgment and

  1167. firmly establishing

  1168. his kingdom on

  1169. earth so that no

  1170. evil thing can or

  1171. may remain.

  1172. And this is my

  1173. favorite part over

  1174. here.

  1175. God will reward the

  1176. entire community of

  1177. God, those who

  1178. fear God's name,

  1179. both small and

  1180. great.

  1181. We have been

  1182. saved through

  1183. Jesus Christ,

  1184. who in obedience

  1185. to God, bore the

  1186. weight of our sins

  1187. on the cross,

  1188. died and was

  1189. resurrected from

  1190. the dead, freeing

  1191. us from our debt

  1192. to sin.

  1193. And whether king

  1194. or servant, anyone

  1195. who believes in

  1196. Jesus is in union

  1197. with him, and he

  1198. will receive every

  1199. spiritual blessing in

  1200. the heavenly places,

  1201. including the rewards

  1202. of eternity that

  1203. Jesus himself

  1204. merited.

  1205. The faithful will be

  1206. rewarded both small

  1207. and great.

  1208. faith.

1209. We tend to be in

  1210. awe of the heroes

  1211. of the faith throughout

  1212. the history of the

  1213. church.

  1214. The twelve

  1215. apostles, Paul,

  1216. Martin Luther,

  1217. John Calvin,

  1218. Dietrich Bonhoeffer,

  1219. Billy Graham,

  1220. Tim Keller, and so

  1221. on.

  1222. And rightfully so,

  1223. all these people

  1224. deserve to be honored

  1225. to a degree because

  1226. they all played a

  1227. significant role in

  1228. faithfully bringing

  1229. the gospel to the

  1230. world.

  1231. But God rewards

  1232. even the least and

  1233. the smallest among us

  1234. for being faithful to

  1235. him.

  1236. Personally, I don't

  1237. think I've done

  1238. anything spectacular or

  1239. earth-shattering or

  1240. world-changing as a

  1241. Christian.

  1242. I'm part of the

  1243. small squad.

  1244. But even the

  1245. smallest of us will

  1246. be rewarded, and

  1247. not one of our

  1248. small acts of faith

  1249. will go unrewarded.

  1250. Jesus says in

  1251. Matthew 10,

    Matthew 10:42

  1252. verse 42,

  1253. and whoever gives

  1254. one of these little

1255. ones even a cup of

  1256. cold water because he

  1257. is a disciple.

1258. Truly, I say to you,

1259. he will by no means

  1260. lose his reward.

  1261. Whether it's Apostle

  1262. Paul, whether it's

  1263. Tim Keller, whether it's

  1264. Sean, Ed, Kathy, me,

1265. or you guys, if we

  1266. believe in Jesus and

  1267. his death and

  1268. resurrection, God

  1269. has sealed the

  1270. promise that we

  1271. will prevail and

  1272. receive his reward at

1273. the very end of the

  1274. age.

  1275. So let's continue to

1276. cling to Christ in the

  1277. face of persecution and

  1278. temptation until that

  1279. time comes.

1280. to those of us who are

  1281. joining this morning who

  1282. do not believe in

  1283. Jesus Christ and the

  1284. gospel, we as a

  1285. church really do

  1286. believe in all these

1287. things that are said in

  1288. the book of Revelation

  1289. and in the Bible.

  1290. We believe that there

1291. will be a final day of

  1292. judgment, whether we're

1293. dead or alive, in which

1294. the Lord God Almighty will

1295. judge us because he's an

  1296. infinitely holy and

  1297. righteous God.

1298. There was a time when

  1299. all of humanity, us

  1300. included, were doomed to

  1301. eternal death because no

1302. one is perfect and no one

1303. has been fully righteous in

1304. the eyes of the holy God.

1305. But just as God is holy

  1306. and righteous, he's also

  1307. gracious and merciful.

1308. For God so loved the

1309. world that he gave his only

1310. son Jesus to die for our

1311. sins, to give those who

  1312. believe in him another

1313. chance to be redeemed and

1314. share an eternal life with

  1315. him.

1316. Those who believe in Jesus

  1317. will gain the eternal

  1318. rewards of heaven.

1319. But those who do not will

  1320. suffer the eternal death

1321. and the lake of fire.

  1322. I don't say all this to

1323. condemn, but to plead with

  1324. you, to consider the

  1325. eternal consequences beyond

1326. our physical life in the

1327. now, to turn to Christ and

1328. to accept him as your

  1329. Lord and Savior.

  1330. After our Sunday services,

1331. we usually have people up

1332. front praying for those who

  1333. want prayer.

1334. For those of you who feel

  1335. convicted or even curious,

1336. please feel free to come up

1337. to talk with us or talk with

1338. any of our church members if

1339. you'd like to hear more about

1340. Jesus or hear more about how

1341. you can be saved and be in

1342. right relationship with our God

1343. because he's so worth living

  1344. for.

1345. This leads to my final point,

  1346. God with us.

1347. Once the elders finished their

  1348. worship, verse 19, God's

1349. temple in heaven was opened

1350. and the ark of his covenant was

  1351. seen within his temple.

1352. There were flashes of lightning,

  1353. rumblings, peals of thunder,

1354. an earthquake, and heavy hail.

1355. After the judgment of the

1356. wicked and the rewarding of the

1357. faithful, John sees in his

1358. vision, God's temple in heaven

1359. opened and the ark of his

1360. covenant was seen inside of

  1361. the temple.

1362. In the Old Testament of the

1363. Bible, the ark of the covenant

1364. was a core part of the

  1365. Israelites' identity and

  1366. relationship with their God,

  1367. Yahweh.

1368. The ark was a golden chest

1369. located in the innermost room

1370. of the great Jerusalem temple,

1371. the holy of holies, and it was

1372. only accessible to the high

  1373. priest of Israel.

1374. And even the high priest of

1375. Israel himself could only enter

1376. the holy of holies once a year

1377. to offer sacrifice in front of the

1378. ark on behalf of the atonement

1379. and forgiveness of Israel's sins.

1380. In Exodus chapter 25, when God

    Exodus 25 chapter mention

1381. instructs Moses to construct the

1382. ark of the covenant, he says that he

1383. will meet with Moses on the mercy

1384. seat of the ark between the two

1385. terebin constructed on the top.

1386. This is where God promises his

1387. presence will be, where he will

1388. grant mercy over his people.

1389. The ark, therefore, is a

  1390. representation of God's presence

  1391. with his people.

1392. In the Old Testament, God's people

1393. could only view a representation of

1394. God, because as God explains later in

1395. Exodus 33, you cannot see my face,

1396. for man shall not see me and live.

1397. God is an infinitely holy God, that

1398. any sinful human in his direct

1399. presence cannot be able to stand even

1400. a second in front of him without being

1401. wiped out by his holiness.

1402. But here in Revelation, the ark of

  1403. God's covenant, and therefore God's

1404. actual presence, is on full display.

1405. The temple is opened, and the holy of

1406. holies, and the ark, which no one could

1407. enter into and stand before, is visible

  1408. for all to see.

1409. Church, this is so significant, because

1410. it symbolizes God's merciful and gracious

  1411. presence among his people.

1412. The community of believers at the

1413. Eschaton, its presence will be enjoyed

1414. fully by all the believers for a time

1415. infinitely greater than what was

1416. possible in the Old Testament.

1417. It's no longer that the priest will go

1418. and stand before God once a year on

1419. behalf of the entire congregation.

1420. God has come down from heaven, from his

1421. temple and the ark, to live among his

1422. entire people as their God.

1423. Once the temple is opened, the

1424. preceding flashes of lightning, the

1425. rumblings, the peals of thunder, the

1426. earthquake, and the heavy hail further

1427. highlight God's presence on earth.

1428. Throughout the Old Testament, these

1429. cosmic phenomena were seen as theophanies,

  1430. symbols of God's presence.

  1431. In Exodus 19, God's presence at

1432. Mount Sinai was signaled by thunder and

  1433. lightning flashing.

1434. In Psalm 18 and Isaiah 30, God is said to

1435. bring his judgment with a great storm and

  1436. hailstones raining down.

1437. In Revelation, these cosmic signs consistently

1438. appear at the end of the seven seal judgments,

1439. the seven trumpet judgments, and the seven

1440. bowl judgments, each signifying the very end of the age.

1441. While these signs themselves are part of the final judgments,

1442. they also signify the presence of God.

1443. God is here, and his kingdom is here on earth,

1444. no longer hidden within the temple or the ark of the

  1445. covenant.

1446. In fact, in John's vision of New Jerusalem, the new city in

1447. Revelation 21, there is no longer a great temple present in the

  1448. city.

1449. New Jerusalem no longer has a temple, for its temple is the

1450. Lord God, the Almighty, and the Lamb.

1451. The temple is not needed anymore at the Eschaton, the end of the

1452. age, because God has come down himself, and he himself is present with his

  1453. people.

  1454. God is with us.

  1455. God is with us.

  1456. God is with us.

  1457. God is with us.

  1458. Good point.

1459. All these seemingly artificial and incomplete interactions while being masked

1460. with friends and family, it was incredibly difficult and frustrating for me.

1461. But I also remember when COVID started to be more under control, when masks

1462. regulations were lifting and social gatherings were starting to be allowed

  1463. again.

1464. This was right when I started to attend Trinity Cambridge Church.

1465. To be able to take off the masks, to be able to see individual faces,

1466. to be able to see unique smiles, and share in direct fellowship with one another in person,

1467. even with a new church community for me, was so freeing, was so liberating, and was so joy-giving.

1468. Church, the difficulties of seeing each other's face in the age of COVID lasted for a few years.

1469. How much greater, how much more joy-giving, and how much more glorious will it be then

1470. for us to finally see God face-to-face and dwell with Him forever at the end of the age?

  1471. 1 John 3, verse 2 says this,

    1 John 3:2

1472. Beloved, we are God's children.

1473. We are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared.

1474. But we know that when He appears, we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him as He is.

1475. All our lives, we can't see God's face, and yet we pray to Him.

1476. We sing songs of worship to Him.

1477. We talk to Him, and we tell Him how much we love Him and trust Him.

1478. And we share so many powerful testimonies of God at work in the Bible and in our own lives.

1479. Many of us spend so much time, if not the majority of our lives,

1480. committing ourselves to someone who we cannot see.

1481. How amazing, then, is the glorious reward of meeting with God and finally taking the mask off

1482. and seeing God face-to-face and being glorified with Him forever and ever.

1483. That's an ending to a story far better than any Avengers movie,

1484. far better than any fairy tale, far better than anything this life has to offer for us.

1485. Seeing God's face and dwelling with Him forever

1486. is the happily ever after worth living and dying for.

1487. Church, the seventh trumpet as the third woe is the climax of God's salvation plan for us.

1488. Once God's kingdom comes to earth, both great judgment and great vindication will be carried out.

1489. As enemies of God are destroyed, evil is undone,

1490. and those who are faithful to God are eternally rewarded.

1491. And finally, the temple of heaven will be opened.

1492. The ark of His covenant will be revealed,

1493. and God will reveal His full presence to His people,

1494. and He will dwell with them forever and ever.

1495. We're not quite at that final day yet.

1496. But as God's people, we're called to live,

1497. we're called to prepare for His return,

1498. and we're called to worship Him with thanksgiving and reality of this future.

1499. So let's continue to live for the name of Jesus,

1500. proclaiming the good news of the gospel,

1501. and clinging to Christ in the midst of trials and tribulation,

1502. knowing that when that final day comes,

1503. God's kingdom will be established on earth.

1504. His victory will be immediate and eternal,

1505. and we will see Him face to face

1506. and reign with Him in resurrection power

  1507. for all eternity.

  1508. Let's pray.

  1509. Heavenly Father,

  1510. we worship You,

  1511. Lord God Almighty,

  1512. who was and is

  1513. and is to come

1514. with Your kingdom on earth.

  1515. Lord,

  1516. we confess

1517. that many of the visions that we see in Revelation

1518. are terrifying and glorious at the same time.

1519. Some of the judgments past

  1520. are beyond our imagination

  1521. and leave us

  1522. speechless

1523. and awestruck at our power.

  1524. Lord,

1525. amidst all these fearful visions,

1526. amidst all these powerful judgments

1527. that You pass over the earth,

  1528. we ask that You

  1529. give us hope,

1530. that You fill our hearts with thanksgiving,

1531. and we're able to come before You

1532. and bow down in worship,

  1533. realizing

  1534. the great reward

  1535. and the eternal reward

1536. that we have in You

  1537. on that final day.

  1538. Lord Jesus,

1539. we wait Your coming in glory.

  1540. Lord,

1541. we ask for You to

  1542. fill us with hope,

1543. to help us to persevere,

1544. to give us the Spirit,

  1545. the Holy Spirit,

1546. that continues to sanctify us,

1547. that continues to guide us,

1548. that continues to illuminate Scripture

1549. right in front of us.

1550. that we're able to live

  1551. in this physical realm,

  1552. faithfully stewarding the Gospel

  1553. unto death.

1554. Won't You continue to be with us, Lord?

  1555. Speak to us

  1556. and remind us

1557. of Your great love for us

1558. in the coming of Your Kingdom.

  1559. We thank You, Lord.

  1560. We love You.

1561. And we pray all of us in Jesus' name.

  1562. Amen.
