  1. are here.

  2. We are in Jeremiah.

  3. All your attention to Jeremiah chapter

    Jeremiah 28 chapter mention

  4. 28.

  5. Jeremiah 28.

  6. You'll notice that chapter 27 has 22

  7. verses. 2817

  8. and 29

  9. 32.

  10. So this is the short chapter of a

  11. threechapter unit

  12. that has that is in our Bibles.

  13. And I I'm not going to take time to

  14. review what we looked at in chapter 27.

  15. Uh

  16. but this is a continuation of that

  17. uh situation if you would

  18. and I'm trusting in your memory to

  19. uh to uh connect the dots on that and

  20. then 29 is also a continuation

  21. of that. So it's really hard to get

  22. three chapters even in one of them

  23. shorter to just try to read through it,

  24. think through it and connect it. The

  25. chapter divisions are important so we

  26. can find things. The chapter and verse

  27. divisions are man-made. They help us

  28. find things but sometimes they put up u

  29. walls that shouldn't be there and we're

  30. not really seeing the section as a

  31. whole. But the problem we have is that

  32. this an awful lot of information to

  33. digest.

  34. Uh it's like if you're talking on the

  35. telephone with somebody and they're

  36. giving you a whole bunch of stuff and

  37. you're not taking notes, it's like,

  38. whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, hold up, hold on

  39. here. I got to I got to uh retain some

  40. of this. It's a lot. Uh it's too much

  41. information for me to to retain. And

  42. yet, nevertheless,

  43. uh we need to try to do that.

  44. And so let's just read chapter 28 1-17.

  45. And you remember Jeremiah and the wooden

  46. ox go ox ox

  47. yolk.

  48. He's still walking around with that. And

  49. so nothing's changed. And he wasn't

  50. starting wasn't trying to start a new

  51. fashion. He had a message uh by dressing

  52. that way. And God actually assigned that

  53. to him as as you know if you were with

  54. us in 27.

  55. And so in chapter 28, it came to pass

  56. the the same year in the beginning of

  57. the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah, in

  58. the fourth year in the fifth month that

  59. Haniah,

  60. the son of Azour, the prophet, who was

  61. of Gibian, spoke to me in the house of

  62. the Lord, in the presence of the priests

  63. and all the people. This was a public

  64. confrontation in the temple

  65. between Haniah and Jeremiah.

  66. This is what Haniah said.

  67. Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, the God

  68. of Israel, saying, I broken the yoke of

  69. the king of Babylon. This was Haniah

  70. speaking. Within two full years will I

  71. bring again into this place all the

  72. vessels of the Lord's house that

  73. Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, took

  74. away from this place and carried them to

  75. Babylon.

  76. Now those vessels and what was going to

  77. happen to them is already covered in the

  78. previous chapter.

  79. And he said, 'I'll bring again to this

  80. place Jeconiah, the son of Jehookim,

  81. king of Judah, with all the captives of

  82. Judah, who went into Babylon, says the

  83. Lord.

  84. Now, notice Haniah uses the

  85. uh the phrase, says the Lord. And so he

  86. was claiming a prophetic

  87. uh a prophetic gift and the ability to

  88. prophesy this and contradict Jeremiah.

  89. And this wasn't just I think it might be

  90. this way. This is what God has showed me

  91. and you're wrong and I'm right kind of

  92. thing.

  93. accusing Jeremiah of getting it wrong,

  94. confronting him publicly.

  95. And

  96. so,

  97. and he says in verse four, I'll break

  98. the last line, the yoke of the king of

  99. Babylon. So, this wearing a yoke,

  100. Jeremiah,

  101. this is out of place. This is going to

  102. be over pretty fast and you're getting

  103. people all worked up more than they

  104. should be. Remember people are all the

  105. first deportation had already taken

  106. place. There were Jews in Babylon now

  107. including Daniel.

  108. So then the prophet Jeremiah said to the

  109. prophet Haniah in the presence of the

  110. priests and in the presence of all the

  111. people who stood in the house of the

  112. Lord even the prophet Jeremiah said

  113. amen.

  114. The Lord do so. The Lord performed the

  115. words which you prophesied to bring

  116. again the vessels of the Lord's house

  117. and all that is carried away captive

  118. from Babylon into this place.

  119. Nevertheless,

  120. I amen the thought.

  121. I amen the desire.

  122. But that's not the way it is.

  123. So Jeremiah was very patriotic. He

  124. wanted the people back. He uh loved his

  125. nation and he knew that they were coming

  126. back, but he knew the math was wrong.

  127. Way off.

  128. Two years is a big difference from 70

  129. years.

  130. God had already said 70. And now Haniah

  131. is saying God saying two.

  132. And Haniah is saying I'm right, you're

  133. wrong. And that kind of thing.

  134. Nevertheless, hear now this word that I

  135. speak in your ears and in the ears of

  136. all the people. The prophets who've been

  137. before me and before thee of old.

  138. Prophets that were before both of us,

  139. both uh prophesied both against many

  140. countries and against great kingdoms of

  141. the world and of evil and of pestilence.

  142. Uh guess what, Haniah? The prophets

  143. before us agree with me, not with you.

  144. The prophet who prophesies of peace.

  145. When the word of the prophet shall come

  146. to pass, then shall the prophet be known

  147. that the Lord has truly sent him.

  148. So normally the other prophets were

  149. prophesying not a peace but of war,

  150. evil, and pestilence. And the only way

  151. you can uh prophesy a peace legitimately

  152. and be listened to is that it comes to

  153. pass pretty fast because that's

  154. different than everybody else. So either

  155. you're right and everybody else and me

  156. are wrong or you're wrong.

  157. Basically what he's saying

  158. the prophet that prophesies a peace when

  159. the word of the prophet shall come to

  160. pass then shall the prophet be known

  161. that the Lord's truly sent him. Remember

  162. that's the rules. If a prophet prophet

  163. in the Bible and Deuteronomy, if a

  164. prophet prophesies something and it

  165. comes to pass, well, he's a prophet. If

  166. it doesn't come to pass, he's a false

  167. prophet. You got to stone him.

  168. Well, that was too much for Haniah. And

  169. so, in verse 10, then Haniah the prophet

  170. took the yoke from off the prophet's

  171. neck and broke it.

  172. Now he's laying hands

  173. on Jeremiah.

  174. I want you to think about what he just

  175. did.

  176. Jeremiah's got the yoke around his neck.

  177. He'd been walking around with it for

  178. months and prophesying. And this man is

  179. bold enough not just to contradict him

  180. verbally, but to confront him physically

  181. and take that take that yoke off his

  182. neck.

  183. publicly.

  184. Uh that's an action that in many places

  185. would start a fight. You understand guys

  186. guys get sharp with each other. You lay

  187. hands on somebody then is fifth city.

  188. And so this is what he did. He laid

  189. hands on him

  190. and took that off.

  191. That was ex obviously he was fairly

  192. proud of himself and fairly confident of

  193. himself that Jeremiah was wrong and he

  194. was right.

  195. So then verse 10, Haniah the prophet

  196. took the yoke from off the prophet

  197. Jeremiah's neck and broke it.

  198. He broke it.

  199. So there's another move. This is

  200. Jeremiah's prop property. This isn't his

  201. property. He takes it off his neck. He

  202. had no business doing that. It's a a lot

  203. of guys that get slugged for that. And

  204. then he takes it and stomps on it and

  205. breaks it

  206. or smashes it against something and

  207. breaks it.

  208. And uh

  209. Jeremiah and the pro well, let me go

  210. this way. In verse 11, Hananiah spoke in

  211. the presence of the people, saying,

  212. "Thus says the Lord, even so will I

  213. break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar, the

  214. king of Babylon, from the neck of all

  215. the nations within the space of two

  216. years."

  217. And the prophet Jeremiah went his way.

  218. There was no fist fight.

  219. There was no more confrontation.

  220. Jeremiah said nothing

  221. and turned around, walked away.

  222. And when you see something like that,

  223. you wonder,

  224. did Jeremiah just chicken out?

  225. Did he did he lose some courage here of

  226. confronting this man? Why did he just

  227. quietly turn around and walk away?

  228. Easy to be critical of somebody in that

  229. situation. Now, many times that's the

  230. best thing to do when someone starts a

  231. fight, right? Just walk away.

  232. Be man enough to walk away instead of

  233. engage in what they want to do.

  234. But anyway, Jeremiah went his way

  235. and we'll see why he did that and why it

  236. was necessary for him to do.

  237. Then, this is after he went his way.

  238. Verse 12, the word of the Lord came to

  239. Jeremiah the prophet. After that, Haniah

  240. the prophet had broken the yoke off from

  241. off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah,

  242. saying, "Go and tell Haniah, saying,

  243. thus says the Lord, you thou hast broken

  244. the piece yoke of wood, but you shall

  245. make for them yolks of iron."

  246. Things are escalating now. This not just

  247. Haniah and Jeremiah. Now, God's

  248. involved.

  249. We're going to exchange wardrobes here.

  250. Jeremiah is not going to be wearing any

  251. uh uh yolks of iron, but you people are.

  252. All of you.

  253. You won't be able to break those.

  254. For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God

  255. of Israel, I put a yoke of iron on the

  256. neck of all these nations. Remember the

  257. previous chapter,

  258. God says, I put

  259. a yoke of iron. This is my providential

  260. working against the gentile nations

  261. surrounding Israel.

  262. They're all going to come under Babylon.

  263. All of them. Not just Israel. And I've

  264. done it.

  265. This is my decree.

  266. They serve Nebuchadnezzar, king of

  267. Babylon, and shall serve him. And I've

  268. given him the beast of the field also.

  269. He gets everything.

  270. I'm over him. He's over everything.

  271. Now, that brings us back to Daniel

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  272. chapter 2, head of gold, doesn't it? And

  273. it brings us back to other things in the

  274. book of Daniel in chapter 7.

  275. God had already revealed to Daniel about

  276. this stuff. Then said the prophet

  277. Jeremiah to Haniah the prophet. Now

  278. Jeremiah is going to speak.

  279. Then said the prophet Jeremiah to Haniah

  280. the prophet, this is a public rebuke.

  281. Hear now, Haniah, the Lord has not sent

  282. thee, but thou makest this people to

  283. trust in a lie.

  284. Therefore, thus says the Lord.

  285. Behold, I'll cast thee from off the face

  286. of the earth.

  287. This year thou shalt die

  288. because you've taught rebellion

  289. against the Lord.

  290. So Haniah the prophet died the same year

  291. in the seventh month.

  292. Now if you go back to Jeremiah 27

  293. um

  294. we find out

  295. that it was earlier it was two months

  296. before this. I can't find it right now,

  297. but it basically you're going to die

  298. within this year and he died in

  299. uh the seventh month of the same year he

  300. did this. So everything started in the

  301. fifth month and it ended in the seventh

  302. month. So Haniah the prophet died in two

  303. months

  304. from this moment. He was dead.

  305. So that's what we're looking at this

  306. particular confrontation

  307. and uh uh I think it's a fascinating

  308. interesting one public this is a public

  309. event everybody saw this

  310. and don't think Jeremiah chickened out.

  311. Don't think Jeremiah was intimidated.

  312. He turned around and walked away

  313. initially but there was a really really

  314. really good reason why he did that.

  315. and we'll get to that before the message

  316. is over.

  317. Now, when I think about this particular

  318. chapter, it's shorter than the others.

  319. It's very much interconnected with the

  320. others. But as I was pondering what was

  321. going on, there are more practical

  322. applications in this chapter in the book

  323. of Jeremiah than I can even mention, let

  324. alone apply in one sermon.

  325. It's very worthy

  326. of all the deep meditation, reflection,

  327. consideration, and exertion we can give

  328. it. There's an awful lot in this little

  329. confrontation that happened so long ago.

  330. Now, an initial orientation would be

  331. helpful. The events that take place here

  332. were from in 594 to 593 BC.

  333. 594 593 BC. Remember the exile took

  334. place in 586 ultimately. That's just a

  335. few years down the road.

  336. This is over 600 years before the public

  337. ministry of Jesus will begin. And it hap

  338. from us it's two and a half millennia.

  339. This is a long time ago. We're studying

  340. a confrontation and a a conflict in the

  341. Jewish temple. two and a half mil two

  342. and a half thousand years ago in the

  343. city of Jerusalem. Well, what makes

  344. these events,

  345. these priorities, these people,

  346. this situation so important. It's in the

  347. Bible.

  348. This is just a one-on-one.

  349. Why is it in the Bible? Why did God take

  350. ink and paper and put this in the Bible?

  351. And some might say, "Doesn't the oxen

  352. yolk date this whole thing?

  353. We don't have oxen on yolks anymore.

  354. The people, this dates the whole thing.

  355. It's kind of like the pottery shop and

  356. all that. This is all This is all so far

  357. back and so different than our life that

  358. it's measurably irrelevant

  359. to us other than

  360. curiosity about ancient history.

  361. couldn't possibly be anything in this

  362. that's relevant to us.

  363. Well,

  364. 2 Timothy 3:16 says, "All scripture is

    2 Timothy 3:16

  365. given by inspiration of God and is

  366. profitable

  367. for instruction and all the rest of it."

  368. And even it it even uses the word uh

  369. you think of the word 2 Timothy 3:16 it

    2 Timothy 3:16

  370. correction in righteousness. It talks

  371. about correction doesn't it? It talks

  372. about in 3:16

  373. uh is profitable for doctrine for

  374. reproof for correction and for

  375. instruction and righteousness.

  376. So scripture reproves people. Sometimes

  377. it teaches but it reproves

  378. and it reproves sometimes in a direct

  379. reproof but sometimes in a story about a

  380. reproof

  381. for people who are like this

  382. for reproof for correction for

  383. instruction and righteousness that the

  384. man of God may be perfect thoroughly

  385. furnished all good works. So thank God

  386. for a Bible. This is uh very important

  387. and it's not out ofd and chapter 27 28

  388. and 29 should be read together, studied

  389. together. It's way too much material. We

  390. have to break it up and you guess what

  391. God expects us to do that. He expects us

  392. to do that to break it up and then put

  393. it all together and then you divide it

  394. up and then put it back together and

  395. then focus on what it's saying.

  396. And uh 2 Timothy 2:15 talks about

    2 Timothy 2:15

  397. correctly handling the word of truth or

  398. or do your best or keep these things in

  399. remembrance as some you you study to

  400. show yourself approved. It means do your

  401. best to give it zeal. And certainly it

  402. takes that to study a section like this

  403. takes time. It takes effort. You have to

  404. get the gray cells going.

  405. And the pro prophet Jeremiah

  406. uh starts this old business out in

  407. chapter 27:2. He's walking around public

  408. with wearing this ox yolk, oxen yoke

  409. everywhere he goes.

  410. He never takes it off.

  411. And his prophecy is illustrated visibly

  412. by what he's wearing physically. And

  413. let's go back to that in 272.

  414. Now, if God tells you to wear a oxen

  415. joke, you better put it on,

  416. right? God was directing the wardrobe

  417. here.

  418. And so, in chapter 20, um 27:2,

  419. thus said the Lord to me, make thee

  420. bonds and yolks, and put them on your

  421. neck.

  422. This is the illustration I want you to

  423. use. And I want you to give this

  424. prophecy, but I want you to be wearing

  425. this while you've given.

  426. And his prophecy is illustrated by

  427. wearing this thing. And we go to verse

  428. 8. It says, "And it'll come to pass that

  429. the nation and kingdoms on 27:8 that

  430. will not serve the same Nebuchadnezzar,

  431. the king of Babylon, and will not put

  432. their neck under the yoke of the king of

  433. Babylon. That nation will I punish, says

  434. the Lord, with the sword, with famine,

  435. and with pestilence until I've consumed

  436. them by his hand." Nebuchadnezzar is the

  437. man. He's got control of all these

  438. countries now. And if you fight him,

  439. you're fighting me, and I'm going to

  440. punish you for fighting him.

  441. Therefore, hearken not to your prophets,

  442. nor to your divers,

  443. nor to your dreamers, nor to your

  444. enchanters, nor to your sorcerers who

  445. speak to you, saying, "You'll not serve

  446. the King of Babylon. Don't listen to

  447. these people." And so, God is saying

  448. this to the Jewish nation. He's saying

  449. it to all the nations.

  450. Apparently, the false prophets of the

  451. Gentiles were giving the same message as

  452. Haniah, the false Jewish prophet.

  453. How do you know

  454. that a person's a false teacher? They're

  455. singing on the same page with people who

  456. aren't Christians.

  457. They're all on the same page. They're

  458. singing the same thing.

  459. And what we have in the 21st century is

  460. people want to pastors want to get their

  461. church, they want to compromise their

  462. church to say what other people are

  463. saying who are not Christians and

  464. somehow sweet talk them into becoming

  465. Christians. We're not we're so loving.

  466. We we we will we we believe like you do

  467. and all that. That's exactly what this

  468. is teaching against. Exactly.

  469. And so God has basically said, "They're

  470. going to serve Babylon and you're going

  471. to serve Babylon. Even if a Jewish false

  472. prophet says it, it doesn't make it

  473. true."

  474. And so he goes on and on and of course

  475. he gets down to the 70-year part and it

  476. is specified time. There's this is going

  477. to be a 70-year thing. And Haniah says,

  478. "Nope, not 72 years."

  479. I know there are people there, but in

  480. two years the people are coming back and

  481. all the stuff Nebuchadnezzar are put in

  482. his temple in Babylon, it's coming back

  483. too. Two years

  484. now. Two years

  485. and 70 years

  486. are big difference.

  487. How if you got a sentence to prison

  488. and it was two years,

  489. that's a long time to be in prison.

  490. But what if you got a sentence 70?

  491. What would 70-year sentence tell you?

  492. I'm not getting out of this place alive.

  493. So a 70y year

  494. u

  495. 70ear time in Babylon,

  496. that's a lifetime

  497. according to the Bible

  498. in Psalm 90. That's a lifetime.

  499. And if you're living and you're taken

  500. into captivity for 70 years, you're not

  501. coming back probably with maybe a few

  502. exceptions.

  503. Two years. Okay, we can we can handle

  504. that. We'll be back. And boy, did two

  505. years sound good in contrast to 70. God

  506. said 70 under Jeremiah. And Haniah says,

  507. "No, no, no, no, no. It's going to be

  508. two years. Everybody will be back. The

  509. temple stuff will be back. This will be

  510. over. Just hunker down and things will

  511. be fine.

  512. Now, let's compare these two men,

  513. Jeremiah and Haniah.

  514. What's the first thing that comes into

  515. your mind when you hear the word

  516. Jeremiah and Haniah? Well, the first

  517. thing is their names rhyme.

  518. They got that I ah ending on it.

  519. both have the same ending. The ayah

  520. ending is a name for Jehovah the Lord.

  521. And Jeremiah's name, I'm going from the

  522. NIV Bible here just for time sake. They

  523. believe that Jeremiah the I ending and

  524. the rest of it means the Lord throws.

  525. The Lord throws.

  526. And so this throw, the the prophet named

  527. the Lord throws is going to show how

  528. God's going to throw the hostile world

  529. into captivity and the Jewish nation

  530. into a far country. All these nations

  531. are going to be judged. He had a fit

  532. name for what he does.

  533. Haniah.

  534. Haniah means the Lord is gracious.

  535. That's a good name. Nothing wrong with

  536. the name Haniah. There are 15 men in the

  537. Bible with the name Haniah. They're

  538. different people. That was pretty

  539. popular. That was as popular as Muhammad

  540. is in the Arab world. Haniah. Everybody

  541. named him Haniah. The Lord is gracious.

  542. Everybody liked that name. The Lord is

  543. gracious. The Lord is gracious. Yeah.

  544. Well, well, emphasize that. Well, it's

  545. true. He is gracious. Nothing wrong with

  546. the name.

  547. And then there's six men are called

  548. Haniah, gracious gift of the Lord. And

  549. there's nine that are ma named Hanoon

  550. merciful.

  551. And so all those comes from some kind of

  552. the same idea.

  553. Now the problem is there are people that

  554. turn the grace of God into

  555. lasciviousness.

  556. Is that true? The Bible teach that?

  557. And the false prophets were

  558. uh emphasizing God's grace to the point

  559. they forgot his justice and his

  560. righteousness and his holiness. Bible

  561. doesn't do that. The true books of the

  562. Bible don't do that, but these guys were

  563. doing it.

  564. Now, here's some applications. This is

  565. kind of an important. It's a little bit

  566. of a side. You can have a good name and

  567. still be bad.

  568. Right? Whether you're an individual

  569. or you're a church

  570. or you're a Christian group or a nation,

  571. John Wesley Harding is an example. John

  572. Wesley Harding had a good name.

  573. John Wesley. That's a good name. John

  574. Wesley was a good man. His parents named

  575. him John Wesley.

  576. His last name was Harding. And anybody

  577. know about John Wesley Harding? He was a

  578. one of the gunfighters in the ancient

  579. west that was known for shooting people.

  580. And it said that he once shot a man for

  581. snoring.

  582. So apparently he liked theology. He read

  583. biology books, but he had a quick draw

  584. and he would uh use it.

  585. Now, I'm sure John Wesley didn't like

  586. John Wesley Harding going around be

  587. doing what he did. So, having a name and

  588. living up to that name are two different

  589. things or understanding that name. A

  590. good name does not guarantee a good

  591. person.

  592. You can have a good name and be a bad

  593. person.

  594. By the way, same thing is true of a n of

  595. a church.

  596. I hope we understand that

  597. a church can have a good name and be a

  598. bad church. A nation can have a good

  599. name, be a bad nation. A city can have a

  600. good name and be a bad city. A

  601. restaurant can have a good name and be a

  602. bad restaurant.

  603. A can of beans can have a good name,

  604. but it can be a bad can of beans. A good

  605. name is only a good name that that is is

  606. to be followed if there's a something

  607. good behind it.

  608. Thank God for the the the churches that

  609. call themselves Baptist. I was raised in

  610. that. But is every Baptist church good?

  611. I hope you know that's the answer to

  612. that.

  613. Thank God for the Presbyterians. Linda

  614. and I watched a a little show on

  615. Jonathan Edwards last night. We had a

  616. great time with that. Uh it's an AI

  617. thing.

  618. And but thank God for the Presbyterians.

  619. Thank God for that's a good name. Uh the

  620. Bible Church I think is a good ma name.

  621. It comes from a good uh history.

  622. But I read in the book of Revelation of

  623. Churches, you can have a name that you

  624. live and be dead.

  625. So when you go on vacation, you can't

  626. always go by the name, right? You don't

  627. know what you're getting till you're

  628. inside.

  629. Now, hopefully if they got a doctrinal

  630. statement, which most of them don't have

  631. on their website now anymore, by the

  632. way, if they don't have a doctrinal

  633. statement on their website, I'm not even

  634. interested in gold.

  635. That's me.

  636. But it's it's kind of important.

  637. But you could have a high office in the

  638. church or in religion and be a a false

  639. teacher. If there's anything church

  640. history has taught us, it's that

  641. uh to the law and the prophets. If they

  642. speak not according to them, it's

  643. because there's no truth in them that

  644. you judge you present prophecy or future

  645. prophecy by past teaching. The Bible

  646. agrees. If you're disagreeing with the

  647. Bible, you're disagreeing with God. And

  648. when people are disagreeing with clear

  649. truth in the Bible, you know they got a

  650. problem.

  651. Now, obviously, there's different inter-

  652. legitimate different interpretations on

  653. some of the difficult things in the

  654. Bible that true Christians hold. But,

  655. uh, I'm just saying a church can have a

  656. good name and still be bad. Just like

  657. Hannah and I had a very good name. Good

  658. name.

  659. But he wasn't good. He was a false

  660. prophet.

  661. Here's point three, my next point.

  662. Oh, excuse me. Point two. You can have a

  663. high office in religious circles and be

  664. wrong.

  665. Ananiah was an official prophet. He had

  666. a high office in Jerusalem.

  667. He had the office.

  668. You can have an office. Some people say,

  669. "Oh, well, if you're a preacher, you got

  670. to be right." No, no, no, no. You're a

  671. pastor. You got to be No, no, no.

  672. There's false teachers.

  673. And Paul confronted the Corinthians and

  674. the Galatians with who they were

  675. listening to. Those people weren't on

  676. the radio. They didn't have a radio.

  677. They weren't on the television. They

  678. were people coming in their church and

  679. teaching in their churches.

  680. And Paul said, "You allowed if someone

  681. smacks you on the face. You're so

  682. tolerant over there in court.

  683. He was talking about the false teacher.

  684. So you can have a high office, a church

  685. office, and still be unsaved.

  686. Three, you can be outwardly moral and a

  687. good family man and still be false

  688. when it comes to God in his truth.

  689. Now, what is important, and I'm not

  690. going to

  691. get into the weeds on this too much,

  692. but there's no indication that Haniah

  693. was immoral as far as being sexual

  694. deviant. There were other false prophets

  695. at that time who were adulterers.

  696. They were cheating on their wives.

  697. And that's very clear at the end of the

  698. chapter, chapter 29, if you'll go to

  699. chapter 29 20,

  700. there were other false prophets besides

  701. Haniah. And uh

  702. I want chapter 29 verse 20.

  703. Hear therefore the word of the Lord, all

  704. ye of the captivity, whom I've sent from

  705. Jerusalem to Babylon. Thus says the Lord

  706. of hosts, the king of Israel, of Ahab,

  707. the son of Kolias, and Zedekiah, the son

  708. of Messiah, who prophesy a lie unto you

  709. in my name.

  710. Behold, I will deliver them into the

  711. hand of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of

  712. Babylon. He'll slay them before your

  713. eyes. And of them shall be taken up a

  714. curse by all the captivity of Judah who

  715. are in Babylon, saying, "The Lord make

  716. thee like Zedekiah, and like Ahab, whom

  717. the king of Babylon roasted in the

  718. fire,"

  719. because

  720. they've committed villain

  721. in Israel,

  722. and they've committed adultery with

  723. their neighbors wives, and have spoken

  724. lying words in my name, which I've not

  725. commanded them even I know and am a

  726. witness says the Lord.

  727. So this group were immoral as well. They

  728. were false prophets. They were teaching

  729. false things but they were also living

  730. false.

  731. Apparently Haniah was a false prophet

  732. but he was not involved in immorality.

  733. There's nothing said of him as being

  734. cheating on his wife or something like

  735. that.

  736. So many of the false prophets were

  737. adulterers

  738. and uh they're confronted for that. But

  739. apparently Haniah wasn't. Douglas Jones

  740. in his writings on Jeremiah, he's a

  741. a Hebrew Hebrew scholar. It could not be

  742. said of Haniah that he was uh immoral

  743. like the other prophets.

  744. So he wasn't in that crowd. So, he

  745. wasn't wrong of immorality.

  746. The others were. But the fact that he

  747. wasn't like them in that area didn't

  748. mean he still wasn't guilty of false

  749. prophecy.

  750. So, apparently that was one area where

  751. you couldn't touch him. How many people,

  752. oh, he's a good man. He's a good pastor.

  753. He's good. He's good with his family.

  754. He's good with his wife. And and they

  755. they don't look anywhere past that.

  756. But his teaching is wrong.

  757. Is it possible? Does it happen? Yes.

  758. Now, usually you have the other thing.

  759. People are teaching wrong because

  760. they're living wrong. That's a there's a

  761. correlation there. Not that anybody is

  762. sinless, but if they're justifying sin

  763. in their life, it's pretty hard for them

  764. to preach proper things when they're

  765. living against it.

  766. So, you can have a good name and still

  767. be bad. You can have a high office in

  768. religion and still be wrong. And you can

  769. be outwardly moral and a good family

  770. person and still be false.

  771. That's an interesting connection, isn't

  772. it? Second Timothy 3, Titus 1 says

  773. there's a that's a you got to be a good

  774. family man to be a pastor. Uh you

  775. certainly can't be cheating on your wife

  776. on the side and stuff.

  777. So many of the false prophets were

  778. adulterers, but nothing is said like

  779. that of Haniah.

  780. It's a good thing for us to hear that,

  781. right?

  782. Uh if people are false, they're false.

  783. They don't have to be engaged in

  784. everything false to be false if they're

  785. teaching false things.

  786. Or

  787. you can be sincerely wrong.

  788. Um I I think he meant it. I think he

  789. believed it. I think he really believed

  790. that God told him

  791. two years is going to be over.

  792. And he thought he thought really that

  793. Jeremiah was a bad influence on the

  794. community and he thought that he was uh

  795. Jeremiah was sincerely wrong and needed

  796. to be warned and confronted and that he

  797. was right. He really believed all that.

  798. That's no excuse. If you're wrong,

  799. you're wrong. If you're wrong, you're

  800. wrong.

  801. and teaching wrong things is a very very

  802. serious business.

  803. Five, false prophets need to be

  804. confronted and exposed for what they

  805. are.

  806. That's what Jeremiah did.

  807. And that's what this confrontation was

  808. all about.

  809. And as it was initiated, Jeremiah's

  810. preaching and this um

  811. this Haniah came up to Jeremiah.

  812. Jeremiah didn't come up to Haniah. And

  813. he takes that yoke off of Jeremiah's

  814. neck which he'd been wearing around. And

  815. he uh threw it away and stomped on it,

  816. broke it.

  817. Initially, Jeremiah was stunned by his

  818. arrogance.

  819. I think he was rather stunned by it.

  820. Nobody else tried that.

  821. And it's possible he didn't know what to

  822. say.

  823. Uh have you ever been surprised by

  824. somebody they say something crazy or

  825. they do something crazy and your tongue

  826. is tied for a moment. You're not quite

  827. sure what you ought to say.

  828. That's possibly what it happened here

  829. when Jeremiah turned around and walked

  830. away saying nothing.

  831. Now Jeremiah looks weak when he does

  832. that. Looks like he didn't stand up to

  833. it.

  834. And

  835. he was surprised by the man's boldness

  836. and his irreverence. He was kind of

  837. shocked by it. And go to 28:10.

  838. It says, "Then Haniah the prophet took

  839. the yoke from off the prophet Jeremiah's

  840. neck and broke it." You break somebody

  841. else's property, that's fighting. That's

  842. you're asking for a fight.

  843. He broke it.

  844. And notice what it says in verse 11.

  845. Hananiah spoke in the presence of all

  846. the people saying, "Thus says the Lord,

  847. even so will I break the yoke of

  848. Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, the

  849. space of two full years." And the

  850. prophet Jeremiah went his way.

  851. So instead of confronting him, he left.

  852. And when I was reading that, I was

  853. thinking, what happened to Jeremiah? He

  854. just kind of went out there.

  855. And then I thought, no,

  856. Jeremiah has been giving prophecy to the

  857. nation and prophecy to this man that the

  858. nation and this man didn't like and

  859. wanted to contradict.

  860. And I think what happened was Jeremiah

  861. didn't say something because he had

  862. nothing to say. He didn't want to get

  863. there and argue with him on a human

  864. level. He went away to find out what God

  865. wanted him to say.

  866. He walked away so he'd get a message

  867. from the Lord.

  868. He didn't want the conflict just to be

  869. between him and and Haniah. He wanted it

  870. to be between Haniah and the Lord. And

  871. so he left. And I think that took a

  872. little bit of it took a lot of maturity

  873. and it took a lot of courage to turn

  874. around just go away.

  875. He went away and I think that was the

  876. right thing to do. And then God told him

  877. what to say. And when God told him what

  878. to say, he went back and confronted him.

  879. Now somewhere there's a lesson there for

  880. us, right?

  881. And sometimes when we witness people say

  882. something outrageous or something

  883. bizarre and we don't know what to say.

  884. It's like this is so crazy. I'm not sure

  885. how I should answer this.

  886. And sometimes one of the best things is,

  887. you know, I hear what you're saying and

  888. I want to think about it before I give

  889. you an answer.

  890. Just stop the conversation.

  891. And that's what he that's what that's

  892. what Jeremiah is doing. uh uh and he

  893. walks away. He walks away. He leaves

  894. leaves uh knowing this man believed what

  895. he was saying. He was wrong.

  896. And we know that false prophets need to

  897. be confronted and exposed for what

  898. they're doing. But Jeremiah had already

  899. done that. And he but there was after

  900. this outrageous it was this was more

  901. than outrageous.

  902. He want All right, God. What do you want

  903. me to do?

  904. I've got this person. This is a public

  905. situation. I don't want to drop the

  906. ball. Remember when Paul got slapped

  907. in the Sanhedrin

  908. and he said, "God will smite you, you

  909. whited wall." Well, Paul hadn't

  910. apologized for that one. He kind of

  911. blurted out something. It tells me Paul

  912. had a temper.

  913. And uh

  914. so

  915. uh Oh, you you said talking to the high

  916. priest that way. Oh, I didn't know it

  917. was a high priest. Now he's eating

  918. toenails, you know. So, he's he's got

  919. his foot in his mouth and now he doesn't

  920. know what to do and he finally comes out

  921. and he you know what he did later uh to

  922. his credit and the Lord the Lord blessed

  923. him. The Pharisees and Sadducees got in

  924. an argument and Paul got out of there

  925. and the Lord says, "Oh, I I really like

  926. what you did, Paul. That was good. That

  927. was good. as you've testified of me in

  928. Jerusalem, so will you in Rome.

  929. Paul must maybe thought he blew it, but

  930. he he did blew it to a point, but uh uh

  931. obviously at that moment he had to

  932. confess, you don't talk that way to the

  933. high priest, even if he's wrong.

  934. So Jeremiah looks weak. He was

  935. surprised, no doubt, by the boldness and

  936. irreverence of this man.

  937. And sometimes people that you love in

  938. your family or people that you're

  939. witnessing to, you're just shocked that

  940. come out of them. That's what they

  941. think. They talk that way about this

  942. and you're not quite

  943. you don't know what to do at that point.

  944. Well, Jeremiah walked away

  945. and uh

  946. very fascinating business here.

  947. And so that's that's an important

  948. section. Well, let's go down and look in

  949. verse 12.

  950. Then the word of the Lord came to

  951. Jeremiah the prophet. Doesn't say when

  952. it came. Was it 10 minutes after this?

  953. Couple hours after this, couple days

  954. after this, but it came. I tend to think

  955. it came pretty fast.

  956. Jeremiah wanted to get alone and see

  957. what God wanted him to say.

  958. It is true that we should be ready to

  959. give an answer for every man that gives

  960. that every man that gives that we can

  961. give a reason for the hope that's within

  962. us to anybody that asks. But this guy

  963. wasn't asking for information. He was

  964. criticizing and confronting.

  965. So the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah

  966. the prophet after Haniah the prophet had

  967. broken the neck off the prophet Jeremiah

  968. saying go and tell Haniah now he's got

  969. now he he's ready to go back

  970. he's got a message from God this wasn't

  971. personal

  972. he's got something from God to tell him

  973. thus says the Lord thou hast broken the

  974. yolks of wood but thou shalt make for

  975. them yolks of iron

  976. This is going to happen whether you like

  977. it, whether the other nations like it or

  978. not.

  979. It's going to be yolks of iron. You're

  980. not going to break this.

  981. For thus says the Lord of hosts, God of

  982. Israel, I put a yoke of iron on the neck

  983. of all these nations that they may serve

  984. Nebuchadnezzar, remember the five

  985. nations we mentioned before, king of

  986. Babylon, and they'll serve him. And I've

  987. given him the beast of the field also.

  988. So, I'm in charge. The nations are they

  989. can you if you don't like this and the

  990. other nations don't like it, too bad.

  991. This is what's going to happen. Jeremiah

  992. went back and said that

  993. broke my wooden yoke, but you're not

  994. going to break the iron yoke that coming

  995. to you.

  996. Then said the prophet unto Haniah the

  997. prophet, hear now, Haniah. The Lord has

  998. not sent you

  999. and you make this people to trust that

1000. lie. There you go. Excuse somebody a

1001. lion for spreading a lie. Those are

1002. fighting words. Now Jeremiah is in his

  1003. face.

1004. This was love that did this.

1005. This was obedience that did this.

1006. Jeremiah got control of himself, his

1007. temper. I don't know if he had a temper

1008. or not. I kind of guess he might have.

1009. Who wouldn't? Would somebody lay hands

  1010. on you like that?

1011. This was very calmly said, "You make

1012. this people to trust in a lie.

1013. Therefore, thus says the Lord, I will

1014. cast you from off the face of the earth.

1015. You're not going to Babylon.

  1016. You're going to die.

1017. You've just committed a sin and death.

1018. You are a dead man walking

1019. this year you shall die because you've

  1020. taught rebellion

  1021. against the Lord.

1022. So Haniah the prophet died the same year

1023. in the seventh month. Now all this

1024. started in the fifth month. So it means

1025. two two months after this this got

1026. started this man was dead.

  1027. He drops over dead.

1028. Now Jeremiah said that to his face and

1029. he said it in front of everybody else.

1030. So what are the people that are going to

1031. hear this? What are they thinking now?

  1032. Whoa.

1033. Jeremiah got it right about him dying.

1034. And so it's obvious that this is a

1035. message God brought through Jeremiah.

1036. And this man was sincerely wrong. But

1037. that didn't make him right by be since

1038. just because he was sincere.

1039. He thought Jeremiah was a bad influence.

1040. Uh and uh it's not Jeremiah, it's him.

1041. Now, all this teaches us something very

1042. important. You can be sincerely wrong. I

1043. think this guy was. And two, false

1044. prophets need to be confronted and

1045. exposed for what they are.

  1046. There's a moment to do it.

1047. There's a moment not to do it. We don't

1048. do it because we get into some fist

1049. verbal fisticuffs with people and we

1050. just have to win an argument. We do it

1051. because of what? Wrong needs to be

  1052. confronted with truth.

1053. Paul said needs to be exposed no matter

1054. who does it. So, we don't know how long

1055. it took for Jeremiah to go back, but we

  1056. know he went back

1057. and uh he didn't have an answer. So, he

1058. he didn't keep going. He waited till he

1059. had an answer. He went away to be alone

1060. and then the Lord showed him what to

  1061. say.

1062. You know, may God help us to be like

1063. this, right? We don't have to win

  1064. arguments.

1065. We don't have to impress people that we

1066. know all the answers right away. We

  1067. don't have to uh

1068. uh fight back and forth with people.

1069. Sometimes we'll have to, but we don't.

1070. There's time to walk away. And so,

1071. that's what what happened here.

  1072. So, I love all this. I think it's a very

1073. instructive thing for you and I.

  1074. Sometimes we're afraid. I I'm afraid to

1075. witness because somebody might say

1076. something I won't know how to answer it.

1077. Or somebody might take a position. and I

1078. don't know what to do with it.

1079. I'll get back with you on that question.

1080. Sometimes that's a way to answer, right?

  1081. And walk away.

1082. I want to continue this discussion.

1083. But when people are out of sorts and out

1084. of control, uh it's really not good to

  1085. honor that with

  1086. your presence.

1087. So anyway, that's what happened.

1088. And it's certainly right here very

  1089. dangerous

1090. to oppose God's spoken word,

  1091. God's written word. It's dangerous.

1092. The Bible's clear about something,

  1093. people go against it.

  1094. that is asking

  1095. um

1096. Derek Kidner says of Ananiah and his

1097. false teaching, what we might describe

1098. as wishful thinking and unorthodox

1099. teaching, God calls a lie and rebellion.

  1100. Think about that.

  1101. There's a movie with it's a 1950s movie.

1102. It's something at Red Rock, a murder at

1103. Red Rock. It's Spencer Tracy and Ernest

1104. Borgine and some others. And Ernest

1105. Borg's trying to pick a fight with

  1106. Spencer Tracy. He's a one-armed veteran

1107. investigating a murder there. And uh

1108. Ernest Borgine's doing a really kind of

1109. trying to pick a fight with him. He puts

1110. ketchup in his chili in the restaurant

1111. and all that kind of stuff. And then

1112. starts getting loud and Spencer Tracy

  1113. says, "You're not only wrong, you're

1114. long you're wrong with a loud voice."

  1115. It's a great line. You're not only

1116. wrong, you're wrong with a loud voice.

1117. And then Spencer Tracy, the one-armed

1118. man, beats beats up uh Ernest Borgine in

1119. the fight. It was the bully

1120. working for the bad guys.

1121. And Jeremiah was very interesting here.

1122. This guy was out of line totally. God

1123. calls your teaching lie and rebellion.

  1124. You're doing a lie. You're in Satan's

  1125. control.

1126. He's a liar from the beginning and the

  1127. father of it.

1128. So all of this contradicted the

1129. statements Jeremiah had already made. If

1130. you go back to uh Jeremiah 22,

  1131. you'll get a perspective on this.

1132. This was a previous prophecy.

  1133. Jeremiah 22:24.

    Jeremiah 22:24

1134. As I live, says the Lord, though Kaniah

1135. the son of Jehoakim, king of Judah, were

1136. the signant on my right hand, yet I

1137. would pluck thee from there. And I will

1138. give thee into the hand of those who

1139. seek your life, and into the hand of

1140. those who face you thou fierest even to

1141. the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, king of

1142. Babylon, into the hand of the

1143. Calaldanss. I'll cast thee out, and thy

1144. mother who bore thee into another

1145. country where you were not born, and

1146. you'll die. So God was very clear

1147. and uh but to the land to which they

1148. desire to return there shall they not

  1149. return.

1150. So God was quite clear about all of this

1151. stuff and Haniah was on the wrong side

  1152. of truth.

1153. So there was a blatant flagrant

  1154. contradiction rebellion against the

1155. Lord. Haniah was a false prophet going

1156. against a true prophet and the Lord

1157. helped Jeremiah confront him properly.

1158. God will help you when you're dealing

  1159. with intransitive people.

1160. Sometimes he gives it right away.

1161. Something somebody gets crazy weird in

1162. their claims. Sometimes we have to wait

1163. and say I'm I'm going to think about

1164. what you said and I'll come back to you.

  1165. We'll continue this discussion.

1166. Warren Wearsby said, "It's always the

1167. case that when we reject the light yoke

  1168. of God's will, we'll end up wearing a

1169. heavier yoke of our own making." You

1170. don't like the wooden yoke, you get an

  1171. iron one next.

1172. So much different is Jesus, take my yoke

1173. upon you and learn of me.

  1174. That's a good yoke.

1175. So rebellion against God's re revealed

1176. will is rebellion against God.

  1177. It's pretty obvious if Haniah's prophecy

1178. was true then Jeremiah's was false.

  1179. Um

1180. the problem with Haniah's prediction was

1181. that it was manufactured in his own mind

1182. and used by Satan to contradict God's

  1183. truth.

1184. didn't come from God. It came from their

1185. own wishful thinking, living in the

1186. fantasy land of their imagination.

  1187. One writer said,

1188. "However sincere false teaching is, it

1189. is always deadly both for the teacher

  1190. and for the students."

1191. I hope we understand why false teaching

1192. has to be confronted, not endured.

  1193. It hurts people.

1194. Doesn't just hurt the false teachers. It

1195. hurts the followers of the false

1196. teachers. It's not safe to be a false

1197. teacher. It's not safe to be a student

1198. of a false teacher. That's you got

1199. Satan. You're just letting the serpent

1200. talk to you. uh in that

1201. Alan Dalich said, "Hananiah's breaking

1202. of the of the yoke does not alter the

1203. divine decree, but it makes it made it

1204. is made to contribute to its fuller

  1205. reflection." There's a purpose in false

1206. teaching and false teachers. It forces

1207. true teachers to get clear

  1208. on truth.

1209. There's an old saying that Satan is our

  1210. fencing master.

1211. In other words, we learn to use our

  1212. saber

  1213. by Satan's attacks.

1214. So, we learn to use God's truth. We

1215. learn how to uh uh understand God's

1216. truth and promote God's truth in the

  1217. battle with false teachers.

1218. One of the most important lessons for

1219. life is to learn how to accept

  1220. correction and chastisement

  1221. from the Lord.

1222. Israel needed to learn that.

1223. They didn't want to learn it. They

  1224. didn't want a life sentence. 70 years,

1225. that's way too long. Two years sounded

  1226. much better.

  1227. Um

1228. God puts limitations on our lives. All

  1229. of us.

1230. Some of them are lifelong.

1231. Sometimes the limitations are limited. I

1232. get sick. I can't go where I want to go

1233. for a couple of weeks or whatever.

  1234. Sometimes they're lifelong

1235. and he's got purposes in that. Those

1236. limitations and we we're not the it

1237. doesn't mean we can't go to the doctor

1238. or get medicine and get help, but it

1239. does mean we accept what God says. We

1240. bow to it. We kneel to it.

1241. And some of God's discipline is

  1242. temporary.

  1243. Some of it's

  1244. lifelong. A 70-year captivity is pretty

  1245. much a lifelong sentence.

1246. And uh we don't get to choose what it

  1247. is. I don't want a lifelong disability.

1248. I want Paul, you need a thorn in the

1249. flesh. You're going to have this the

1250. rest of your life. You're 40ome years

1251. old. You're going to have it for the

  1252. next 30 years or 20.

  1253. I don't want that.

1254. I'm not even on the mission field yet.

1255. Yeah, but you'll be better for the

1256. thorn. That wasn't for something bad

1257. Paul had done. It was to keep him

1258. humble. And so God knows all these

1259. things. So what what's something else

1260. that we can take away? Synchronize your

  1261. watches. Remember that term?

1262. It was used in World War I when

1263. everybody all the officers would

  1264. synchronize their warship watches

1265. because they're going to attack at 6:15

1266. in the morning and they want everybody

1267. going over the top at once

1268. and not some going over this time and

1269. some going over 5 minutes late.

1270. So synchronize your watches was

1271. something that was very important in

1272. World War I and I think even in World

  1273. War II.

1274. But we need to synchronize

1275. our desires. We need to synchronize our

1276. will and we need to always say God's

  1277. will is my will.

1278. Even if God's will is a hard thing to

  1279. take,

1280. sooner or later we're going to get some

1281. kind of limitation that we're not going

  1282. to get rid of.

1283. It's going to be lifelong for whatever

1284. rest of your life you got. Probably some

1285. of us have got it already. you know, I

1286. got this, I got this, I got this. Well,

1287. none of them are too bad, but put

1288. together, you know, going to have to

1289. wait for my resurrection body. They're

1290. not really going away. Well, God's got

1291. purposes in that. If you'd have been

1292. better not having it, God wouldn't have

1293. given it to you. You know, we have these

1294. things in our life providentially,

1295. and it's not good to fight against it.

1296. Nobody wants to embrace hard providences

1297. that never end in this life.

1298. But and if we can use medicine or

1299. doctors or some somehow get out of it,

1300. okay. But if we can't, what do you do?

1301. God's will is my will. That's it.

1302. If God wants me to stop preaching next

1303. week, I have to Okay, I'd rather go

1304. farther. But God said, "No, that's it

  1305. for you. You're done."

  1306. Okay, I lost my voice totally. I can't

  1307. speak. I'm God. Obviously, I got can't

  1308. preach it.

  1309. or I'm bedfast.

1310. You know, some of those things happen.

1311. They're going to happen to you. They

1312. happen to me. We have to learn always to

1313. make God's will our will.

1314. Alexander McLaren has some interesting

1315. comments on this section of scripture.

1316. He just says, "To be self-ruuled is to

1317. be self-destroyed." There is no need

1318. that I should remind you of how it's

1319. better to accept Christ's providences

1320. than to kick against them.

1321. Sorrow to which we submit losses all its

1322. bitterness and much of its sadness.

1323. Sorrow to which we submit losses all of

1324. its bitterness and much of its sadness.

  1325. I didn't want this, but God has a

1326. purpose in it. I don't know what it is,

1327. but I see the hand of God, so I submit

1328. to it. I can't change it, so I'm not

1329. going to fight it. I'm not going to live

1330. in a fantasy world. I'm just going to

  1331. embrace it.

1332. Sorrow to which we submit losses all its

1333. bitterness and much of its sadness.

1334. Kicking against the affliction makes its

1335. sharp point penetrate our limbs.

  1336. Let's take providence and

1337. its difficulties and just embrace them.

1338. We do not get to choose the larger

1339. picture of the times in which we live.

  1340. It's chosen for us.

1341. Do you not feel that the world's fallen

  1342. apart?

  1343. I mean really

1344. do we not feel that this is kind of a

  1345. hard time

  1346. be alive

1347. and for many many reasons in our country

1348. but not just in our country and other

1349. places there's like nowhere to go

1350. but that's the times in which we live.

1351. It's an honor to live in hard times.

1352. It's an assignment from heaven to serve

  1353. him in hard times.

1354. Some all they want to do is get the hard

1355. times over. Others say, "I'm embracing

  1356. this. I can't change it, so I'm

  1357. embracing it

  1358. as from God."

1359. And sometimes through prayer, God lifts

1360. his correction on people or nations or

  1361. churches. Other times, it's a life

  1362. sentence and that's it. there's no

  1363. changing it.

  1364. Um,

1365. so what an interesting thing, a true

1366. prophet versus a false prophet and this

1367. whole sin unto death. We're not to pray

1368. that somebody does that, but we are to

1369. accept that it can happen. And Haniah

  1370. did it.

1371. You know, I've thought about this

1372. this difference between Jeremiah and the

  1373. prophetic truth

  1374. uh with Haniah.

1375. Haniah was a moral man, but he was a

  1376. false prophet.

1377. He wasn't like a false prophet who was

1378. immoral and false prophet. He was a

1379. moral man with false prophecy.

  1380. It tells me something.

1381. This is a side application.

1382. What about people that are all into

1383. setting dates for the rapture?

  1384. Isn't that a little bit dangerous?

  1385. Even if they're

1386. good pastors in some other ways, I think

  1387. it's extremely presumptuous

1388. when Jesus said, "No man knows that the

  1389. hour."

1390. So I that kind of thing

1391. uh I I am very suspicious of anybody

  1392. that's a date setter. I'll tell you

1393. that. I don't care what their theology

1394. is or anything else. Once they start

1395. doing that, they're off my radar as far

1396. as somebody I want to hear very much

  1397. from.

1398. Uh they think they know more than they

  1399. know.

1400. To me, it's very dangerous to do what

1401. Jesus said we're not to do.

  1402. And I now I don't put the a mill premill

1403. thing in that same category. I think

1404. there's some honest disagreement between

1405. Christians about the millennium and the

1406. church's relation to Israel and all of

  1407. that. I put there there's honest

1408. differences of opinion that should be

1409. recognized as not evil in themselves.

1410. But then there's other things that are

  1411. such direct opposition to

1412. uh to God's revealed truth that no man

1413. knows the day or the hour and somebody

1414. says, "I got the day and I got the

1415. hour." How arrogant can you be? How

  1416. foolish can you be?

  1417. So anyway, Jeremiah 28, I hope it's a

1418. challenge and a blessing to you to think

1419. through some of these things. And next

1420. time we'll pick it up with 29 if if

1421. we're still here, if the Lord hasn't

1422. come. And that that rounds out this

1423. particular section of prophecy. And

1424. remember, we talked about the escalator.

1425. We're almost up to the top of the

1426. escalator. Now we're getting into

1427. Jeremiah 30 and 31, the new covenant.

1428. This is the real to me. We have made the

  1429. journey

1430. all the way across Jeremiah to get to

1431. the chapters that are coming up.

1432. And we're going to be on a different

  1433. level

1434. in our understanding of the new covenant

1435. because we've made this journey.

1436. And I thank you for being with us as

  1437. we've done it. It's been a long journey

1438. and we're going to we're going to get

  1439. the payback very soon.

1440. in these next few chapters. 29 is the

1441. last part of the escalator and then

1442. we're up to the old covenant's over and

1443. the new covenant's going to be involved

1444. and uh announced. Father, we thank you

1445. for what we looked at tonight. Challenge

1446. us and change us by your most precious

1447. word. We know there are people that uh

1448. stand against us and not just against us

1449. but against your word and the clear

1450. teaching of your word not in sincerity.

1451. There's a falseness about it and uh

1452. they're guilty. Uh and help us to know

1453. how to deal with people. Give us wisdom,

1454. Father, to deal with people that are

1455. imputent and arrogant and um

1456. very proud of who they are and what

  1457. they're doing.

1458. And not only wrong, but they're wrong

1459. with a loud voice. We've got a lot of

1460. them today, the United States, and some

1461. of them are in churches. So give us

  1462. grace

1463. to be a Jeremiah to wait on you and to

1464. give the response you want us to give

1465. and give a reason for the hope that's in

1466. us in Jesus name. Amen.
