  1. biographies and church history books and

  2. stuff. Um, John Wesley's mother

  3. was a very strict disciplinarian.

  4. I don't know how many kids they had. It

  5. was in the double digits,

  6. but she was a busy woman

  7. and

  8. can you can imagine her with that many

  9. kids around was hard to have a quiet

  10. time. Does anybody know what she did to

  11. have a quiet time?

  12. >> She put her apron over her head.

  13. >> She She told the kids, "I'm going to

  14. have a quiet time now." She put her

  15. apron over her head and and uh so in the

  16. midst of the busyiness of having a bunch

  17. of children and trying to raise them,

  18. discipline them, that's what she did for

  19. her quiet time. What are we doing for

  20. our quiet time?

  21. Give God a moment to speak to us every

  22. day. It's a good song, Linda. Thank you

  23. for choosing that. Steve Benson has a

  24. Sunday school hour for us. God bless

  25. you, Steve.

  26. Thank you, pastor. Good morning,

  27. everyone.

  28. We've been doing a a sound doctrine

  29. series,

  30. major doctrine, sound doctrine, Bible

  31. themes.

  32. Um, it's sort of been a topical study so

  33. far and

  34. I've kind of enjoyed that

  35. studying going through these topics and

  36. you know seeing where what the word of

  37. God has to say

  38. about these important things. So if you

  39. would let's open our Bibles to Acts

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  40. chapter 4.

  41. This is the teaching and preaching of

  42. Jesus.

  43. Teaching and the preaching of Jesus.

  44. And we're going to look at a lot of

  45. verses in John here in a minute. But you

  46. know the the synoptic gospels, Matthew,

  47. Mark, and Luke,

  48. they focus on the public ministry of

  49. Jesus.

  50. And you know, they give us great detail

  51. on that. And and John does something

  52. very unique. John zeros in on the

  53. private teaching of Jesus. You know,

  54. John gives us the, you know, chapter 14

  55. and on that, you know, was the uh the

  56. upper room discourse,

  57. you know, the things that Jesus taught

  58. uh the apostles.

  59. So, if you have a red letter Bible, you

  60. know, we have all of Jesus

  61. uh sayings in red,

  62. and there are a lot of them.

  63. There are a lot of things that Jesus

  64. said and we can't ignore everything else

  65. by any means, but

  66. but taking the time to zero in on what

  67. Jesus preached and taught in public and

  68. private

  69. is important, I think, for us as we

  70. study him

  71. and realize that he was there was never

  72. a teacher like him, never a preacher

  73. like him.

  74. You know that guy, he could discern your

  75. thoughts while you're talking to him.

  76. So, we have that here in the book. We

  77. have that here in the word of God. And

  78. he is the word, isn't he?

  79. And the word became flesh and dwelt

  80. among us. And John really does a good

  81. job focusing on Jesus private teaching.

  82. And it also John presents the deity of

  83. Christ. Well, here we have the results

  84. of what Jesus taught.

  85. And in Acts chapter 4,

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  86. you know, this is the first persecution.

  87. You know, Jesus told him they were going

  88. to be persecuted.

  89. You know, I don't know if they believed

  90. him or not. They should have believed

  91. him, but when it when it rolls around

  92. here, you can see that they're relying

  93. on what he told them, what he taught

  94. them.

  95. And we look at verse um 13.

  96. Acts 4:13. How did the apostles react

    Acts 4:13

  97. um to the persecution that came

  98. to them as the church as apostles? They

  99. were all persecuted by the Jews around

  100. them.

  101. So you know the first century closes out

  102. in the book of revelation. John John

  103. wrote the revelation that was you know

  104. 95 AD.

  105. So you know the first century is when

  106. all of these things happened and began

  107. and come to a close. So, you know, there

  108. was a span of time and the book of Acts

  109. is, you know, it's over 30 years, maybe

  110. 35 years of the church's ministry that

  111. Luke records for us.

  112. And here in Acts, we know and we have

  113. the first persecution.

  114. So, just like Jesus said,

  115. people were going to hate them because

  116. of him.

  117. And and that's not changed for us

  118. either.

  119. But here in verse 13, now when they saw

  120. the boldness of Peter and John, wait a

  121. minute. I thought these guys ran and

  122. hid.

  123. Yeah, they did.

  124. But the the things that Jesus foretold

  125. them in the upper room, you know, this

  126. is going to happen, that's going to

  127. happen. They had, you know, they worked

  128. their way through those things. But here

  129. they are now preaching the gospel and

  130. starting in Jerusalem and and just

  131. spreading out from there. By the way,

  132. the church began in Jerusalem, not Rome.

  133. The false church maybe didn't begin in

  134. Rome,

  135. but the true church began in Jerusalem.

  136. And it began with the preaching of the

  137. apostles and their boldness here that we

  138. see in Peter and John. Those who ran and

  139. hid. They're not running hiding now

  140. and perceived that they were unlearned

  141. and ignorant men. I mean, that's the way

  142. society looks at us. Well, you guys are

  143. just, you know, you you're out there.

  144. You know, you don't count. You don't

  145. amount to anything. We can't listen to

  146. you guys.

  147. But they saw that in Jesus when he was

  148. on the earth. You know, the Pharisees,

  149. the Sadducees, the Jews. I mean,

  150. everybody

  151. uh, you know, was ignorant when it come

  152. to Jesus.

  153. But that look what happened. It says,

  154. "And they murled

  155. that they had and took knowledge of them

  156. that they had been with Jesus." So

  157. that's what made the difference

  158. is being with Jesus. And then he come

  159. back, remember after he rose from the

  160. dead, he had a ministry with them as

  161. well,

  162. you know. So they're not running like

  163. they did before. They're standing up for

  164. Christ and they're standing up for the

  165. gospel. Look back in verse 12. You want

  166. to get persecuted, just go out in the

  167. world and tell everyone this. There is

  168. no neither is there any sal any other

  169. salvation in any other name under heaven

  170. given among men whereby we must be

  171. saved. I mean that is a pretty bold

  172. statement.

  173. That's why these men in the early church

  174. was being persecuted.

  175. But what where was their boldness at? It

  176. wasn't in, you know, in their

  177. occupation. It their boldness was in

  178. preaching. Their boldness is in telling

  179. them what verse 12 says here. Just

  180. they're bold about the salvation. And

  181. that's what we have to be. We have to be

  182. bold about what verse 12 says. You know,

  183. I don't care what anyone else says.

  184. There's only one way to heaven. And

  185. that's not me speaking. That's God.

  186. That's the Lord Jesus. That's he's the

  187. one we got this from. And we see here

  188. the first apostles in the church bold

  189. about these things. And guess what? It

  190. gets worse. Look down in verse 17. And

  191. they told him that it would spread no

  192. further among the people. What? This

  193. bold preaching that Jesus is the only

  194. way to heaven. Verse 12.

  195. And they threatened them.

  196. They speak no more in this name.

  197. So the doctrine is is the salvation is

  198. nowhere else but in Jesus. And you know

  199. and they got persecuted

  200. um and they continued to get persecuted.

  201. And you go on through the book of Acts

  202. here and it's very obvious. Look up in

  203. verse one of chapter 4 as they they

  204. spoke unto the people. That's what

  205. people that's what preachers do. That's

  206. what teachers do. They preach to the

  207. people. They speak to the people. They

  208. didn't say, "Well, the priest, you know,

  209. maybe he's saved. We just we'll go over

  210. here and deal with the fisherman." No,

  211. they stood up to the government. They

  212. stood up to the Jews. They stood up to

  213. those who persecuted and killed Jesus.

  214. You know, can't get much worse than

  215. that. You know, you're still the people

  216. that killed Christ are you're now

  217. preaching to him. You just killed the

  218. son of God.

  219. To the Sadducees, to the chief priests,

  220. they didn't leave anyone behind. And

  221. they and they grieved that they taught

  222. the people. And they preached the name

  223. of Jesus, the resurrection of the dead.

  224. There's the apostles doctrine. There's

  225. the apostles preaching. And then and

  226. again, neither is their salvation in any

  227. other verse 12. And they laid hands on

  228. them and they put them in custody. And

  229. the next day it was now even tied.

  230. Many of them who heard the word

  231. believed. So there you go. That's what

  232. they did. And that's what we need to do.

  233. The word is the word that Jesus gave us.

  234. And the apostles were preaching what

  235. Jesus gave them. So as we look at the

  236. teaching and the preaching of Jesus, the

  237. first thing we got to know is that

  238. that's what the early church did. That's

  239. what the apostles did. They didn't drift

  240. off into anything else. This was

  241. everything to them. Jesus and him

  242. crucified. Jesus and him raised from the

  243. dead. And it's just like Jesus warned

  244. them. He said these things were going to

  245. happen. They're going to hate you

  246. because of me.

  247. And we can expect the same.

  248. And now in verse 17,

  249. remember they said, "Don't spread this

  250. any further among the people." What? The

  251. preaching of Jesus, the teaching of

  252. Jesus, that they he's the only way to

  253. heaven.

  254. There's no other salvation offered.

  255. And the early church stood

  256. for these things. In verse 20, we cannot

  257. but speak.

  258. So they spoke. They taught, they

  259. preached, they taught just like Jesus

  260. did.

  261. He spoke and he taught. And we have that

  262. in the gospels.

  263. So as we look at his teaching and his

  264. preaching, then you know, we need to

  265. know that this is what the early church

  266. was just zeroed in on what he said and

  267. did.

  268. And they've written these things down

  269. and and this helps us. So

  270. our power, their power was in preaching

  271. the resurrection of Jesus from the dead

  272. up there in verse two.

  273. So we need to follow suit, you know,

  274. 2,000 years later that nothing has

  275. changed in the world. It's still

  276. separated from Christ, still persecuting

  277. the gospel preachers. And you know, you

  278. say there's no other way to heaven but

  279. Jesus. Then you know that's going to

  280. bring on the wrath of man. Who are you?

  281. Well, it's not who am I? It's who is

  282. Jesus?

  283. That's why verse 12 said there's no

  284. other name. It's him. He's the one we

  285. preach.

  286. Go over to John. Now, we're going to

  287. look at a few verses in John. John

  288. records um the private teaching of

  289. Jesus. And here in John chapter 6,

    John 6 chapter mention

  290. John chapter 6 and verse one.

    John 6 chapter mention

  291. Now these guys are, you know, they're

  292. remembering what Jesus went through.

  293. You know, here's, you know, yeah, the

  294. Pharisees, they didn't want anything to

  295. do with him. You know, he called them

  296. all demons and devils.

  297. He said, "You don't know my father. You

  298. are the devil."

  299. So here in John chapter 6 and verse one

    John 6 chapter mention

  300. after these things Jesus went over the

  301. sea of Galilee

  302. uh which is the sea of Tiberius

  303. and a great multitude followed him

  304. there. So he's

  305. he's preaching and teaching. I you know

  306. I don't know what that was like but we

  307. get to heaven we're going to hear him

  308. talk. We're going to hear him teach.

  309. We're going to hear him speak.

  310. But these people heard him as a man as

  311. well as the apostles.

  312. And why are they following? They

  313. followed him because they saw his

  314. miracles which he did on those who were

  315. diseased. That's what the Messiah did.

  316. And we're going to look at his miracles.

  317. They are so important. But how much more

  318. important is his teaching and his

  319. preaching?

  320. We can't, you know, we're not called to

  321. keep the miracles going. That went away.

  322. were called to keep his preaching and

  323. his teaching going.

  324. And he went up into the mountain and he

  325. sat with his disciples. So, you know,

  326. there were times when Jesus was public,

  327. you know, like the synoptic gospels tell

  328. us. Then there were times when Jesus got

  329. them in alone and and some of the ladies

  330. as well. He had private time with them

  331. to tell them, you know, this the truth

  332. is coming from me, not them. And they

  333. saw it and his miracle. So then you know

  334. there was no doubt he is the son of God.

  335. And the Passover of the feast was near.

  336. Jesus lifted up his eyes

  337. and and he said where shall we buy bread

  338. that these may eat? So he's going to use

  339. this miracle here to say

  340. you know it's not physical food it's

  341. spiritual food. It's not miracles.

  342. It's me.

  343. It's the word of God. I am the bread.

  344. And we understand that now. You know, we

  345. Jesus is the bread of life.

  346. And here he's telling them that telling

  347. the apostles, I'm the bread of life.

  348. You know, don't listen to them.

  349. You listen to me. And he did this to

  350. test them for he himself knew what he

  351. would do. And then Philip says, you

  352. know, we we couldn't feed this if we had

  353. a Sam's Club card.

  354. And then Jesus does the miracle, make

  355. the men to sit down, you know. So all

  356. these things were

  357. a part of his earthly ministry and him

  358. showing them that he is the bread of

  359. life.

  360. Um

  361. we read verse 11 where he says and they

  362. took the loaves and when they given

  363. thanks he distributed to the disciples

  364. and then the disciples were sitting down

  365. and you know everyone took as much as he

  366. would. This is just incredible miracle

  367. and he's not doing this just to feed the

  368. crowd. He could have done that pretty

  369. easily. He's doing this so the disciples

  370. will learn. Listen to me. Everything I'm

  371. the bread of life. The food that you

  372. need is going to come from me. Like the

  373. woman at the well.

  374. Take the gift that I give you. I am the

  375. water. I am the living water. Jesus did

  376. those things and said those things and

  377. they're so important for us to see here.

  378. And then over in verse 17, he entered a

  379. boat and then the over to the sea of

  380. Capernium, Peter's hometown. And it was

  381. now dark. And Jesus was not come to

  382. them. And he come to them

  383. uh on the sea here as the wind blew.

  384. They knew and they wrote about 530

  385. furongs and finally he says down there

  386. it is I be not afraid. So you see how

  387. Jesus took his miracles and just

  388. connected them to him. You know I'm

  389. greater than my miracles. I'm more

  390. important than my miracles. What I say,

  391. my preaching, and my teaching is more

  392. important than miracles.

  393. Because here's what we want. We could

  394. read all this. We don't have time. Go

  395. down to verse 24.

  396. And at the end, it says, "Seeking for

  397. Jesus."

  398. You know, that's what we want. We want

  399. people seeking for Jesus. And, you know,

  400. he's the bread of light. You know, he

  401. can feed the hungry. He can, you know,

  402. the woman at the well. He's the living

  403. water. We need to get people to Jesus,

  404. not the church.

  405. Although going to church is important,

  406. but we can't stop there.

  407. It's not about joining a church. There's

  408. no other name under heaven whereby we

  409. must be saved. And he said that, not me.

  410. So, he can give us the strength. And you

  411. know, these men saw these miracles and

  412. walking on the water and and feeding the

  413. uh the folks here.

  414. And this is what we need. You know, we

  415. need physical food

  416. and you know, we we need um physical

  417. water as well. But it doesn't end there.

  418. We have a greater need.

  419. And Jesus is the bread of life. Jesus is

  420. the living water. That's what the

  421. apostles preached and learned from him.

  422. And these people were seeking for Jesus.

  423. That's what we want. We want to preach

  424. him and him crucified. He's the only way

  425. to heaven. You're going to go to hell

  426. without him. So there's no other name

  427. under heaven whereby we must be saved.

  428. That's all of us. Jesus didn't need to

  429. be saved. We But we do. He's God. God in

  430. the flesh. And you know the the the

  431. apostles as they reflect back on these

  432. things when they wrote these things that

  433. you know they're remembering you know

  434. what he said and what what happened but

  435. John he gives us sort of the private you

  436. know lessons from from Jesus himself and

  437. that's what we're seeing here they were

  438. seeking Jesus.

  439. So that's what we want, you know,

  440. everything that we do. And

  441. we want folks to be seeking Jesus. And

  442. we can't do that if we're not preaching

  443. him, you know, and teaching him. Jesus

  444. did it publicly. He did it privately.

  445. And he spoke the words to them and and

  446. you know, the words are, you know, they

  447. are spirit and they are life. That's in

  448. this uh book of John

  449. as well. And then verse 26, he says,

  450. "You verily, verily, I say unto you, you

  451. seek me, not because you saw the

  452. miracles, but because you ate the loaves

  453. and you were filled. Labor not for the

  454. food." Jesus is preaching.

  455. He's teaching. He's making the

  456. application for us all.

  457. Labor not for food which perishes,

  458. but for the food that endures to

  459. everlasting life, which the Son of Man

  460. has given unto you. Don't miss that

  461. word.

  462. It's a gift. Jesus is a gift.

  463. And he's given to us by the father. He's

  464. given He comes to us in his word. He's

  465. He's the one that saves us. He's the one

  466. that redeems us. He's the one that

  467. forgives us.

  468. He says, "For him has God the Father

  469. sealed."

  470. So Jesus says, "You don't have to go

  471. anywhere else. Don't look anywhere else.

  472. I'm the way. I'm the truth. I am the

  473. life. No man can come to the father but

  474. by me." These are amazing things that he

  475. said.

  476. And and uh now look down verse 34.

  477. Then they said unto him, 'Lord,

  478. evermore give us this bread.

  479. So he is that bread and he says,"I I I

  480. will be the living bread. I will be your

  481. the light. I will be the water." God

  482. says, "I will be these things for you."

  483. So we don't need to look anywhere else

  484. when it comes to salvation.

  485. you know, the football

  486. just around the corner, isn't it? But if

  487. they don't kicker doesn't get the the

  488. ball through the uprights, no good. But

  489. if he does, good.

  490. And so it is with with salvation.

  491. You're, you know, you're going to miss

  492. the mark. If you try to come to God any

  493. other way, but if you come to God on his

  494. terms in the way that he has laid out,

  495. Jesus said, "I'll be your living wife.

  496. I'll be your bread

  497. and and I will supply to you these

  498. things. This is the work of God in verse

  499. 29. How do we get this? You know, do we,

  500. you know, see how much money we can

  501. give? No. No. You're missing the whole

  502. thing. We're sinners. Everything we do

  503. is sinful. Our our flesh cannot please

  504. God. We cannot approach God any other

  505. way than through his son. And that's

  506. what Jesus says here. believe on him who

  507. he has sent.

  508. So Jesus taught the crowd, the public,

  509. the apostles and John and and Luke and

  510. Peter and these men who were with him

  511. that he was that's what they were to do

  512. to believe on him. You know, the gospels

  513. weren't written until after the churches

  514. were some of the churches were already

  515. out there.

  516. So, you know, we're coming back. They're

  517. coming back and they're, you know, these

  518. men, John, he's given us an incredible

  519. thing. Believe on him.

  520. Nothing else will do.

  521. And you know, Jesus said, "I am the way.

  522. I am the truth." You know, he didn't shy

  523. away from these things. I'm the bread of

  524. heaven. I'm the water of life. All those

  525. things he is for us. And look at verse

  526. 38.

  527. He says, "For I came down

  528. from heaven."

  529. You know, Jesus, I thought he started in

  530. the manger. Well, as a man,

  531. but he existed way before that. He, you

  532. know, they they said, "We follow

  533. Abraham. We follow Moses."

  534. Jesus said, "They spoke of me. I'm

  535. greater. I'm I was here before they were

  536. ever born.

  537. So our faith is resting in a God who is

  538. eternal that become a man

  539. that he might become the bread that he

  540. might become the water of life and he's

  541. come down from heaven and he's brought

  542. that life his eternal life with him. You

  543. know his his ability to set us free from

  544. sin. If the son will make you free you

  545. will be free indeed. That's right here.

  546. So these men heard these things and and

  547. here Jesus said I'm I'm from heaven and

  548. I didn't come you know yeah I was born

  549. in Bethlehem but I existed before

  550. Bethlehem and he went to Nazareth and

  551. there he was a carpenter and you know

  552. there he had a childhood

  553. but before all those things he come from

  554. heaven and he's come down to from heaven

  555. to do what? Not his own will. That's

  556. what the devil tried to get him to do

  557. when he tempted him.

  558. Couldn't get Jesus to sin. He's sinless.

  559. He tried to get him to divert himself

  560. from the father's will.

  561. Didn't work. I mean, Jesus, he was a

  562. workaholic at getting his father's will

  563. done. And people misunderstood that. I

  564. mean, even the the apostles

  565. misunderstood that.

  566. And now they know, now they see, oh,

  567. he's rose from the dead, you know, now

  568. we're to go and preach. Now we're, you

  569. know, the church is going all these

  570. great and wonderful things. But

  571. everything come from heaven in the

  572. person of Jesus. So it is just so

  573. important for us and the church to look

  574. and see what he said and what he did,

  575. his preaching and his teaching.

  576. And you know to the extent that you know

  577. we don't have to ask the world we

  578. certainly don't have to ask the devil

  579. you know what we should do or or what we

  580. should believe or listen to Jesus

  581. himself.

  582. It's enough if you listen to me. It's

  583. enough if you come to me. It's enough if

  584. you let me be your Lord. I I'll give you

  585. living water. I'll give you mana from

  586. heaven. I am the bread from heaven.

  587. So he's not of this world. That's that's

  588. where the persecution part comes in for

  589. for him and for us.

  590. He was hated by the world. He was hated

  591. by the devil. The Gentiles, the Jews,

  592. you line them up. No one wanted to

  593. listen to him until they were born

  594. again.

  595. And it's still the same.

  596. So that's what we need to do. we need to

  597. be born again. Jesus said in John

    John 3 chapter mention

  598. chapter 3, you know, Nicodemus said,

  599. "You're a pretty good teacher." And

  600. Jesus said, "Well, I'm more than a good

  601. teacher. I'm a redeemer. I'm the savior.

  602. I'm the one that you can come to and be

  603. born again." That's what we need. We

  604. need eternal life. We're born dead in

  605. trespasses and sins.

  606. And then look if you will in verse 57 of

  607. John.

  608. We're all as dead as Lazarus was,

  609. you know, and there's a physical side

  610. and a spiritual side to us,

  611. you know. And we have a soul and our

  612. soul is separated from God. And that's

  613. made our body and everything else in us,

  614. our personality, everything that we are

  615. separated from God.

  616. The only way back is through his son,

  617. the one who come down from heaven. As he

  618. says here in verse 57,

  619. he says here, as the living father,

  620. you know, God's not dead.

  621. He's quite alive. We have the living

  622. God. We have the living word.

  623. You know, God's alive. His word is

  624. alive. And you know to get that we have

  625. to come to him through Christ

  626. and be born again and receive that free

  627. gift that he offers. Only he can give us

  628. life. Only he can raise us from the dead

  629. spiritually. That's the way we're all

  630. born in Adam and then we come along and

  631. make it even worse.

  632. He says as the living father has sent

  633. me. You know, that's so important for us

  634. to see. God the father sent the son to

  635. earth. He didn't come on his own. He

  636. didn't, you know, he didn't become, you

  637. know, he he did well and then he become

  638. God. No, that's that's false teaching.

  639. That's blasphemy.

  640. He's been God since forever. He was

  641. there in the garden with Adam and Eve,

  642. the Trinity, God the Father, God the

  643. Son, and God the Holy Spirit. It's so

  644. important that our faith rest in a

  645. triune God

  646. and that's what we find in the scripture

  647. a triune God the father son and holy

  648. spirit so here this living you know it

  649. has to come from above that's what he

  650. says

  651. you know except you be born from above

  652. you cannot enter the kingdom unless you

  653. be born from above you cannot become a

  654. child of God where's all that at John

  655. chapter one

  656. But once those things are in place, once

  657. we believe on him, once we we rest our

  658. faith in the son of God, like like the

  659. men that he discipled did, you know,

  660. that's so important. Can't be Jesus

  661. disciple without being born again. A lot

  662. of people are trying to follow him and

  663. they're not born again.

  664. You can't do it. You must come to him on

  665. his terms. And he's laid them all out.

  666. He's living and he can give us life, the

  667. life so the life that we need.

  668. And then you know Jesus, he started

  669. talking about the forgiveness of sin.

  670. You know that was a big deal with the

  671. Jews.

  672. Jesus not only claimed to be God that

  673. God the father uh sent him and he is God

  674. the son and he is the son of man. And

  675. Jesus said you come to me and I I'll

  676. give you life and I'll forgive your

  677. sins.

  678. You know, that's why he's so important.

  679. The only way you can be born again, the

  680. only way you can have the forgiveness of

  681. sins is through the Lord Jesus.

  682. And here

  683. he he tells us these things. Now, turn

  684. over to uh to to John chapter 7.

    John 7 chapter mention

  685. And you know that's

  686. You know, people talk about, you know,

  687. religion and traditions and, you know,

  688. all those things that, you know, that

  689. men have come up with. You know, you

  690. can't come to God on something that men

  691. have come up with.

  692. That's that's Jesus said in John 10, I

  693. am the way, I am the truth, and I am the

  694. life. You know, I'm the shepherd of the

  695. sheep. The shepherd gives his life for

  696. his sheep.

  697. So the only way to come to God, not

  698. through any man's way or man's religion

  699. or man's traditions or man's thoughts,

  700. you know, those things are all sin. The

  701. only way to come to God is through his

  702. son. And that's what Jesus said. Come

  703. unto me all ye that labor and heavy

  704. laden and I will give you rest. And here

  705. in John 7 and verse 38, he says that.

  706. Notice what he says. He that believeth

  707. on me, is it good works? You know, he he

  708. that does good works,

  709. as the scripture says, out of his heart

  710. will flow rivers of living water. And

  711. that's what happens when you're born

  712. again. Everything changes.

  713. And now we have the spirit. Now we have

  714. the word of God. Now we have the new

  715. birth. Now we're not going to perish

  716. anymore. We become a child of God

  717. through the new birth that he talked to

  718. Neas Nicodemus about.

  719. And then if you will

  720. um look down in verse 46

  721. he says here the officer said never a

  722. man spoke like this man.

  723. He kept telling him he's the son of God.

  724. He kept telling him come to me oh you

  725. that labor and heavy laden. Nobody had

  726. ever on the earth said anything like

  727. that.

  728. only God.

  729. So the rulers heard this, the Pharisees

  730. heard this, the Romans heard this, and

  731. as a result they came and crucified

  732. Jesus.

  733. Look in chapter 8

  734. verse 40.

  735. John 8 and verse

  736. 40.

  737. you now seek to kill me. Remember Jesus

  738. always to tell tells the truth. He's not

  739. a liar. He's not a deceiver. He says

  740. here to the to the to these to this

  741. crowd, these Jews,

  742. they still think they're of the seed of

  743. Abraham and children of God because of

  744. that.

  745. And you know, that's the book of Romans.

  746. Paul said, "You, you know, you have to

  747. be born again. You, you're not going to

  748. heaven because you're a Jew.

  749. No one's going to heaven by anything

  750. that humanly speaking.

  751. We have to be born again. We have to

  752. come to God through his precious son.

  753. That's what he taught. You know, we

  754. didn't make this up. We didn't just We

  755. didn't all get together and you know

  756. what? Well, let's make a Bible and let's

  757. uh you know what what do you think we

  758. should say? You know, ask everybody.

  759. That's the world. That's religion.

  760. That's tradition. That's all those

  761. things that are out there in the world.

  762. We have the truth because Jesus come to

  763. the earth and he gave it to us through

  764. his body. And here in John 8:40,

    John 8:40

  765. you seek to kill me.

  766. Why? a man that has told you the truth.

  767. Remember the apostles in in Acts chapter

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  768. 4, you guys are trying to kill us

  769. because we told you the truth.

  770. So don't, you know, don't don't think it

  771. looks it's going to be different for us.

  772. They, you know, they hate us because of

  773. him. They hate us because we speak with

  774. his authority. There's no other way to

  775. heaven but through him. No other way to

  776. heaven but through the new birth.

  777. It takes the blood of God to pay for our

  778. sins. We cannot back off that.

  779. Jesus never backed off of it. The

  780. apostles never backed off of it.

  781. I told you the truth. So he, you know,

  782. he was a incredible teacher. You know,

  783. remember he said, "No one ever spoke

  784. like Jesus. No one no one's told us the

  785. truth."

  786. You know, and that's what happened to me

  787. when I got saved. You know, personal

  788. little personal note,

  789. I just thought you Christians were all

  790. just a bunch of cuckoo.

  791. And you know, I never been around a real

  792. Christian, a genuine Christian, but

  793. there's so much religion out there.

  794. There's so much man's tradition out

  795. there. You're not going to find your way

  796. to God through it.

  797. And somebody come to me with the gospel

  798. and said, "You got to be born again."

  799. Listen.

  800. And this is the truth. You're a sinner.

  801. You need a savior. You need a redeemer.

  802. Well, people don't want to hear that. I

  803. thought I was doing pretty good. I

  804. wasn't. But, you know, that's the way we

  805. think. Oh, we're doing pretty good. You

  806. know, God's going to take me right on

  807. into heaven. No, he's not. Unless you've

  808. been born again.

  809. And he says, "Which I have heard of

  810. God."

  811. So Jesus connects his teaching not only

  812. his coming from heaven to earth, he

  813. connects his teaching

  814. uh to heaven right to the throne of God

  815. are the words of Jesus

  816. are the sound doctrines of the church of

  817. the truth of the power of the gospel.

  818. That's what Paul said to the Romans.

  819. This is the power of of God is in the

  820. gospel.

  821. So when we change it or we water it

  822. down, that's what the devil wants us to

  823. do.

  824. That's what the world wants us to do.

  825. You Christians, man, you born again

  826. guys, they're just and gals, you Bible

  827. thumpers.

  828. Well, we're not. I guess if that's what

  829. we are, that's what we are. But we can't

  830. but speak the things that Jesus has

  831. taught us and told us like the early

  832. apostles. So the doctrines that we have

  833. aren't man-made. They didn't come from,

  834. you know, a committee.

  835. They came from God. And his son

  836. delivered them to us.

  837. And his son delivered him to his early

  838. apostles and his early disciples.

  839. And they were born again.

  840. They were born again through this man

  841. that taught, you know. And so it is for

  842. everyone who has been born again. And

  843. you have been, you must listen to this

  844. man called Jesus,

  845. this teacher and this preacher Jesus as

  846. I did, as John did, as Peter and the

  847. early apostles. It's not changed.

  848. Salvation is a gift from God.

  849. There's not of works lest any man should

  850. boast.

  851. And I'm not going to drift off into that

  852. gospel presentation, but I'm saying, you

  853. know, this is not what we think. This is

  854. what he told us to do.

  855. And he's given us a book here to do it.

  856. In John 8:58, he tried to get killed for

    John 8:58

  857. it. And then look over here.

  858. And they took up the stones and they

  859. cast him at him. But Jesus hid himself

  860. and he went through the temple going

  861. through the midst of them. and and he

  862. just dis he just disappeared.

  863. He his time had not yet come.

  864. But the apostles are telling us that he

  865. was persecuted

  866. because he spoke the words from heaven

  867. to us

  868. and they're sufficient. You know, we

  869. have a sufficient savior. We have a

  870. sufficient word of God. You know, all

  871. these things are are have been done for

  872. us.

  873. And you know, he told the apostles,

  874. "Freely you receive, freely give. Don't

  875. charge anyone for this. Don't try to to

  876. to make steps up to my altar." That's

  877. what he told the Israel back in the in

  878. the uh early chapters of Exodus. Don't

  879. make steps to me.

  880. You know, I have died for you.

  881. And Jesus is the one that proclaimed

  882. these things.

  883. He's eternal. He has eternal life. He's

  884. the son of God. He's the son of man.

  885. He's everything he said and more. John

  886. says we we need a a dolly to to carry

  887. every the books that could be written

  888. the good that he did. But John said

  889. these have been written that you might

  890. do what?

  891. Believe on his name. So don't add

  892. anything to that believing on his name.

  893. to be saved. Now, there are other things

  894. that are important, you know, but that's

  895. not what we're talking about. Now, we'll

  896. get to the church and the the church has

  897. a couple ordinances and, you know, there

  898. there's a whole, you know, another

  899. series that we can do on those things,

  900. Lord willing. But now we're zeroed in on

  901. Jesus. Now we're zeroed in on what he

  902. said about himself and where it came

  903. from.

  904. He came from heaven.

  905. And then uh John 16:28,

    John 16:28

  906. John chapter 16

    John 16 chapter mention

  907. and verse 28.

  908. You know that's you know if we know that

  909. and you know we believe that Jesus is

  910. God.

  911. You know, that's you can't be saved

  912. without believing Jesus is God. I'm

  913. sorry. I didn't say that. He did.

  914. But if you do believe he's God,

  915. then you may have eternal life. You may

  916. know the father. This all came from him.

  917. And the apostles were taught this by

  918. him. And here in 28, he says, "I came

  919. forth from the father." So, if we

  920. believe in the preexistence of Jesus,

  921. like we're supposed to, you know, he he

  922. he become a man, but he never became

  923. God. He's always been God. And he came

  924. from the father. He came from the

  925. Trinity. And he says, "I have come into

  926. the world."

  927. And they they knew it. You know, that's

  928. how John starts out. all these uh

  929. disciples that came to Jesus and said,

  930. "You're him. You're the promised one

  931. from glory." And that's who he is. He

  932. come forth from the father. He come into

  933. the world. But now he says, "I'm going

  934. to leave the world." What do you mean,

  935. Jesus? You going to commit suicide?

  936. No, he's not going to commit suicide.

  937. remember he he wouldn't let him have him

  938. earlier on with their motives and and

  939. everything. The timing wasn't right. But

  940. now that the time is right, Jesus said,

  941. "They're not going to take my life. I

  942. just lay it down.

  943. And I'm laying it down for you. I'm

  944. laying it down to to pay for your sins."

  945. And that's what he says in verse 27. The

  946. father himself

  947. um loveth you.

  948. There's no other way to

  949. see the love of God than through Jesus.

  950. Can't I love creation? I love everything

  951. out there. God is just an incredible

  952. God.

  953. I um

  954. my back porch was covered with moths the

  955. last week. I don't know how they're just

  956. a big moth hatch and there's moths

  957. flying all over the back yard and I'm

  958. like, "What is going on?" It was like,

  959. you know, bats coming out of a cave or

  960. something, except they were all moss.

  961. And I looked out the window and one of

  962. those moss got got stuck in the screen.

  963. I had the screen up where I've been

  964. powerwashing. So, he or her got

  965. underneath the screen and got up to the

  966. top and was was just pinched in there.

  967. Couldn't get out. I'm like, it's just a

  968. moth. I'm not going to rescue a moth.

  969. All of a sudden, I don't know what they

  970. must have sent a distress signal out.

  971. Here come all these other moths over

  972. there to that one that was stuck and

  973. they started pushing him down to get him

  974. out of the screen.

  975. I recorded it. I said, "Okay, man. I I

  976. just I'll help, too." So, went out there

  977. and lifted the screen up and we got the

  978. moth out. Everybody, all the moths were

  979. happy. I mean, how without a god is this

  980. possible? Tell me.

  981. It's not

  982. that the moths care about each other,

  983. you know, and that's what Jesus says. We

  984. should love one another. If moths can do

  985. it, why can't we?

  986. And then Jesus says a greater thing

  987. here. The father loves you

  988. because I lay down my life for you and I

  989. have loved you and you have believe that

  990. I have come from God. This is such an

  991. important verse.

  992. It Jesus sort of sums it all up, you

  993. know. So this is what we believe. This

  994. is what I believe. The son of God's

  995. death on the cross was not, you know,

  996. because he was a, you know, he didn't

  997. pay his taxes.

  998. No, it was because he was righteous.

  999. He was loving. Well, how many faults did

1000. he have? He looked at him and said, "Can

1001. you accuse me of anything?" They

  1002. couldn't. You know, he's perfect. He's

1003. sinless in every way. And he went,

1004. he come from heaven and he went to the

  1005. cross.

1006. and he he's going to leave the world.

1007. He's going to leave us, the the apostles

1008. say here, and go back to his father.

1009. So that's what we believe. We believe

1010. that he's eternal. He come from God. He

1011. come from heaven. He come to earth. He

1012. taught. He spoke. He preached.

1013. And we learned. And so did his

  1014. disciples.

1015. And not only did they learn from him,

1016. his teaching, they learned from him as

  1017. an example.

1018. He's there's no other example like him.

1019. So he said these things and then um the

1020. next one, let's look look over in

  1021. chapter 12 and verse 45

  1022. of John.

1023. All this is in John.

1024. you know, John, he he's he he brings the

1025. private teaching of Jesus and that's,

1026. you know, that's what we need to get

1027. as we study sound doctrine. You know, we

1028. you know, Jesus was more than God. He is

  1029. God

1030. and and he became a man for us.

  1031. But before

1032. he spent 33 years on this earth being a

  1033. man

1034. and then he laid down his life and paid

1035. for our sins. And here in in John 12 and

  1036. verse 45,

1037. and he that seeth me

1038. seeth him that sent me.

1039. So Jesus, he's the only clear vision

1040. into heaven. He's the only clear vision

1041. into eternity. He's the only clear

1042. vision to God. Where's God at? We come

1043. to earth as a man

1044. and spoke great things. And not only

1045. spoke great things and did great things,

1046. he he laid down his life as a ransom for

1047. us all. He became uh um poor that we

1048. through his poverty might be made rich.

1049. It's all in him for salvation.

1050. And that's why Paul and the church said

1051. there's no other name under heaven

1052. whereby we must be saved.

1053. But the great thing is, you know, God

1054. has given us the gift of eternal life,

1055. but we have to come to him on his terms

1056. and receive it as a gift.

1057. And you know, they questioned his

1058. authority. Don't have time to go there,

1059. but we've already looked at that the the

1060. authority that Jesus had. He said,

1061. 'Well, you can't do this. Who do you

  1062. think you are?

1063. He says, "My authority is not from

1064. earth. My authority is from above."

1065. And that's what he did. And here in John

  1066. 15,

  1067. John 15

1068. is where he told him about Acts chapter

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  1069. 4.

1070. You see, Jesus is not just God. He knows

1071. the future. He knows all of it. Every uh

  1072. inch of it.

1073. And it's going to end the way he says.

1074. Not the way men say

1075. he's God. Who can go against God? Well,

1076. they're going to try. That's the whole

1077. book of Revelation. But here he says,

1078. "If the world hate you,

1079. know this. This is a knowledge." They

1080. heard it from him. He preached it and he

1081. taught it. He said, "If the world hate

1082. you, know that it hated me before it

1083. hated you." And they saw

1084. they saw the abuse that he took. a man

1085. in whom there was no sin, no gile.

1086. And here we see this in John 15 verse

    John 15:18

1087. 18. If you were of the world, the world

1088. would love its own. Was Jesus of the

  1089. world?

  1090. He's from the father.

1091. Devil didn't like that. The devil tried

1092. to divert him. the Pharisees, Sadducees,

1093. the Jews, the Romans, the Gentiles,

  1094. everybody

1095. tried to get him to to divert from his

  1096. father's will.

1097. He said, "No, thank you.

1098. My father and I are one. Uh my father is

1099. the creator and I am as well. The triune

1100. God, the wonderful things that we know

1101. about God." He says, "Uhoh,

  1102. I have

  1103. chosen

  1104. you out of

  1105. the world."

1106. Was that election? What are you talking

  1107. about? Yeah, that's election.

1108. Where did we get this great doctrine of

1109. election? It wasn't something the church

  1110. dreamt up.

1111. No, this came from Jesus. Remember, he's

1112. been in heaven. He's, you know, he was

1113. there, you know, when when things were

1114. created. He was there when the father

1115. chose um us in him.

1116. And he left us with his his apostles. I

1117. go to Mark chapter 13.

    Mark 13 chapter mention

1118. And because of what Jesus taught us and

1119. what Jesus told us, now we can we can

1120. speak in his authority. We can speak in

  1121. God's authority

1122. and say there's no other name under

1123. heaven whereby you must be saved. But if

1124. you'll be saved, you know, you will be.

  1125. It's a free gift

1126. that comes by faith. And here in Mark

  1127. in chapter 13

  1128. verse 32,

1129. he says here, "But of that day and that

  1130. hour knoweth no man,

1131. know not the angels who are in heaven,

1132. neither the Son, but the Father."

1133. People, the Mormons try to use this

1134. verse to say, "See, Jesus isn't God.

1135. You know, he he doesn't know what's

1136. going on." Well, that's not even at all

1137. what he's saying here. We'll come back

1138. to this in a second. He says, "Take

1139. heed, watch, and pray. For you know not

1140. when the time is." That's what he's

1141. trying to teach him. Not that he doesn't

1142. know when he's coming back like they try

1143. to say. He's saying, "You don't know

  1144. when I'm coming back

  1145. to be ready."

1146. So that's the authority that he spoke

1147. with that come from his father that come

1148. from eternity past and is going to take

1149. place in the in the future. So that's

1150. why Jesus can say there's no other name

1151. under heaven whereby we must be saved

  1152. but through him.

1153. Take heed to watch and pray you know not

1154. when the time has come for the son of

1155. man is like a man taken a far journey.

1156. When he said this to them, they probably

1157. were going like, "What's he talking

  1158. about? What's a far journey? You're the

1159. son of man. You're the son of God. Where

1160. are you going to go? You're I'm the

  1161. present."

1162. But that's what Jesus is saying. You're

1163. going to see me die on the cross

1164. and pay for your sin. But remember, I'm

1165. going to raise from the dead. And not

1166. only am I going to raise from the dead,

1167. I'm going to return that you may be

  1168. where I am.

1169. You know, God takes his children out of

1170. this world. He chose them. He's elected

1171. and chosen us whether you like that or

1172. not. And he's called us. You know, all

1173. of those things we need or we be just

1174. like everybody else. God who?

1175. But God has sent the light and that

1176. light is in his son. That's what Jesus

1177. said. I am the light of the world.

1178. And you know, I'll stop. But here he

1179. also talks about his kingdom.

1180. You know, that's what we need to know.

1181. This man that was on the earth has spoke

1182. with such authority has left and he's

1183. coming back. But he also has a kingdom.

1184. That's where you and I come in.

1185. And the precious gospel has called us

  1186. out of the world

1187. and unto God. These are blessed things.

1188. And you know, if you argue with Jesus,

  1189. you're arguing with God.

1190. You know, don't argue with God. Don't

1191. argue with the word of God. Just believe

1192. it. God doesn't need our help to tell us

1193. what we need to hear. That's what a lot

1194. of people think. But Jesus spoke and the

1195. apostles spoke the words that he spoke

1196. and you know, they were born again and

1197. we're born again. And anyone else who

1198. comes to him will be born again as well.

  1199. Let's pray.

1200. Father, we thank you this morning for

1201. the word of God. Where else can we go to

1202. see the earthly ministry of your son in

1203. public and these synoptic gospels and

1204. these private things that John shares

1205. with us that he individually taught

  1206. them.

1207. And we're just so thankful that you will

1208. individually teach us your ways and your

1209. truths as we pray, as we watch, as we

1210. prepare for a great kingdom.

1211. Uh this world's in serious trouble.

1212. Unbelievers are in serious trouble. The

1213. devil is in serious trouble

1214. because of the son of God and the son of

1215. man. That's in whom we believe that died

1216. for our sins and him that rose from the

1217. dead as Peter said in Acts 4. And we

1218. preach in his name and we teach in his

1219. name these great sayings that you gave

1220. him from heaven. And we thank you for

1221. such precious gift as this. And we pray

1222. it in Jesus name. Amen.

1223. Oh Lord, as we go from this place,

  1224. loving you more,

  1225. trusting you more.

1226. May the power of your love and the light

  1227. of your word shine

1228. to a sin darkened world. as we go from

  1229. this place.
