  1. just mentioned we're in a we're in a

  2. little bit of a different uh series,

  3. right? Couple of serieses. I'm teaching

  4. one series on the resurrection of

  5. Christ. That's a that's a big one.

  6. That's a big issue in Christianity. Uh

  7. and we're going through the Bible with

  8. that. We all ought to be experts on

  9. that. If we don't know anything else, we

  10. ought to know that and know it well for

  11. our own benefit, our own walk with the

  12. Lord or our own ministry to others and

  13. giving them the gospel. And so that

  14. series is going on. And the other series

  15. we're going on is great text of the

  16. Bible. Great texts of the Bible. And the

  17. idea I'm going through the Old

  18. Testament. We'll get to the New

  19. Testament. Great text in the Old

  20. Testament.

  21. And we're usually taking one out of each

  22. book. Today I'm going to take three.

  23. three texts out of each book because I

  24. told you we were going to skip Ezra and

  25. Nehemiah because I taught that about

  26. nine years ago and I know you remember

  27. everything that I said

  28. that was invi that was on Wednesday

  29. nights so some of you didn't get that

  30. and uh but Ezra and Nehemiah are kind of

  31. hard books uh but uh we have taught

  32. those all the way through verse by verse

  33. chapter by chapter and we talked through

  34. Esther and that's one of my favorite

  35. books of the Bible. I hope you love it.

  36. I love it. Uh and uh so we're going to

  37. look at one verse from Ezra, one from

  38. Nehemiah, one from Esther. Now, if you

  39. are a new Christian or you're here and

  40. you don't know the Bible that well, how

  41. do I find Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther?

  42. Go to the Psalms. Open your Bible and

  43. the middle book will be the Psalms. 150

  44. Psalms. And then before Psalms is Job,

  45. right? Just go backwards. Before Psalms

  46. is Job and before Job is [clears throat]

  47. Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther. Okay, so that's

  48. how you find it quickly. And uh if

  49. you'll be willing to do that and follow

  50. along. If you did not bring a Bible and

  51. you want to follow along, please raise

  52. your hand. John's sitting back there.

  53. We'll get a Bible to you. Anybody not

  54. have a Bible with them today that would

  55. like one. [clears throat]

  56. Same thing for a hymn book. We we we

  57. will do that. We should have done that.

  58. Okay. I guess we don't need one from

  59. anyone today. Okay, that's our that's

  60. our uh but again, we usually go verse by

  61. verse. That's my favorite way of

  62. teaching the Bible, but sometimes you

  63. need a break from that. And that's what

  64. we're doing in this particular series.

  65. Let's uh look to the Lord in prayer.

  66. Father, as we wait upon you today, may

  67. your grace and your help be my portion

  68. and the portion of all of us who hear.

  69. [clears throat] Our Lord said, "Take

  70. heed how you hear."

  71. And so may all of us hear your voice,

  72. not the preacher's voice,

  73. not any Bible teacher's voice that's

  74. quoted today.

  75. with the voice of the Savior speaking

  76. through his word to our hearts.

  77. And we know, Father, some of this is

  78. very unfamiliar territory

  79. or some people who are new here.

  80. Maybe they've never read Ezra or

  81. Nehemiah or Esther.

  82. [clears throat] They're a little bit

  83. behind and trying to grasp this. But we

  84. ask your blessing on our time together

  85. and use it as you see fit. And may we

  86. have a taste of the truths of these

  87. books so that may it increase our

  88. appetite for them. So we go and ponder

  89. them alone with you and do the hard work

  90. in Jesus name. Amen.

  91. Okay. Um that's the plan. We're going to

  92. take a verse from each of these books

  93. and we have an outline this morning.

  94. Now, if I was to ask the question,

  95. what's Ezra all about? What's the book

  96. of Nehemiah all about? [clears throat]

  97. What's the book of Esther all about?

  98. Some people could not answer that

  99. question. They don't have a clue. So,

  100. we'll we'll we'll just u hit that just a

  101. little bit.

  102. Ezra is about the Jewish people who've

  103. been [clears throat] uh taken captive to

  104. Babylon

  105. and now are coming back uh from the

  106. Persian king Cyrus who conquered

  107. Babylon. He I guess what the Iranians

  108. were sending the Jews back to build a

  109. temple.

  110. That's what was going on here. And we're

  111. talking fifth century BC.

  112. So this is hundreds of years before

  113. Jesus was born. The Jews are in

  114. captivity. They are experiencing

  115. political death. God set up a theocracy

  116. on earth.

  117. And because of their sin, they're sent

  118. into exile. And just like in physical

  119. death, your spirit leaves your body. In

  120. political death, the Jews leave the

  121. land. They're taken off of it.

  122. That's political death for them. That's

  123. what God predicted of them if they would

  124. not uh obey him and hear him.

  125. And so now God's resurrecting some of

  126. them to come back. He's allowing them to

  127. come back to Jerusalem which have been

  128. totally destroyed. The city of Jerusalem

  129. was smashed by the Babylonians in 586

  130. BC.

  131. And now after 70 years, they're getting

  132. to come back.

  133. It's a journey of almost 1,000 miles.

  134. And they didn't have an airplane to take

  135. it.

  136. I don't know about you, but even,000

  137. miles on an airplane is to me a long

  138. journey.

  139. Even if it's a couple hours,

  140. they they made it in, you know, two,

  141. three months.

  142. because they did couldn't go a straight

  143. flight just like our jets don't go in a

  144. straight flight to Europe but curve

  145. around uh they did they had to curve

  146. around where the desert was and go up go

  147. north to go south.

  148. So in Ezra, we have the Jews going back

  149. to the city of of um Jerusalem, the

  150. capital city.

  151. And in Nehemiah, we have the same thing.

  152. Jews going back to the capital city of

  153. Jerusalem. In Esther, we have Jews still

  154. in Persia, which is modernday Iran.

  155. So, and we we have that book and what's

  156. going on. So these books are very much

  157. related. Uh they were going back in

  158. stages. Some are going now and some are

  159. going later. And they were scattered

  160. into other countries besides Avalon

  161. which is in modern day Iraq.

  162. And so they're going back. So turn go to

  163. Psalms and then go back to Job and then

  164. go you'll go through Esther uh and

  165. Nehemiah and get clear to Ezra and

  166. that's where we will begin today.

  167. Three great texts

  168. that we're going to take our message

  169. three great text for one message

  170. and there's three great points and I'm

  171. going to add a four fourth point no

  172. extra charge at the end. Number

  173. one in Ezra,

  174. the lesson we learn from Ezra today is

  175. God's priorities must become our

  176. priorities, especially when it involves

  177. God's work.

  178. God's priorities

  179. must become our priorities,

  180. especially when it involves God's work.

  181. Then we'll go to Nehemiah.

  182. And the lesson there today is God's work

  183. is a great work and must not be

  184. neglected.

  185. God's work is a great work and must not

  186. be neglected.

  187. And then in Esther, we have a third

  188. point. God's work will be done whether

  189. we do it or not.

  190. Whether we do it or not.

  191. If we don't do it, God will have

  192. somebody else do it.

  193. God's work will be done whether we do it

  194. or not.

  195. So these are the three books that are

  196. certainly worthy of our intense

  197. investigation, meditation, and

  198. application in their original context.

  199. They are certainly worthy of us going

  200. verse by verse and chapter by chapter.

  201. We're not doing that this morning. We're

  202. just dipping in each one. And today

  203. through coalation and interaction and

  204. application

  205. we will enjoy ourselves today. Okay.

  206. First Ezra the book of Ezra

  207. [clears throat]

  208. and the point I want to emphasize today

  209. is this

  210. God's that my first point God's

  211. priorities must become our priorities.

  212. Sometimes we we want God to come to our

  213. priorities. This is what I want. This is

  214. what I want done first. That's not the

  215. way it works in life. God's priorities

  216. must become our priorities.

  217. And those priorities must be applied to

  218. the work God has given us to do.

  219. Um, you and I have got something to

  220. accomplish in our life

  221. besides just eat,

  222. drink, and be married because tomorrow

  223. we die.

  224. God's priorities need to become our

  225. priorities.

  226. Individual Christians have good works to

  227. do. We can't be saved by our good works.

  228. By grace are you saved through faith and

  229. not of yourselves. It's the gift of God,

  230. not of works, lest anyone should boast.

  231. Every religion in the world except

  232. Christianity has a merit theology

  233. where your good works save you. Whether

  234. it's the eightfold path of Buddhism or

  235. the uh five pillars of Islam or the Jews

  236. that misinterpret the Bible by trying to

  237. earn their way through doing the ten

  238. commandments.

  239. Every man-made religion glorifies man.

  240. But by grace are we saved through faith

  241. and not of ourselves. It's the gift of

  242. God. It's not of works, lest anyone

  243. should boast. But what's the next verse?

  244. We're not saved by our good works.

  245. Don't think you can go to heaven and

  246. say, "Uh, God let me in because I'm a

  247. good person. I'm better than other

  248. people.

  249. I go to church. I've done this. I've

  250. done that." That's not it. If you don't

  251. get in through the blood of Jesus,

  252. you're not getting in.

  253. Doesn't matter what else you got.

  254. So

  255. it says the next verse in Ephesians 2

  256. and verse 10 is for we are created,

  257. we are created unto good works, those

  258. that are saved by God's grace, a gift we

  259. don't deserve. We are created in Christ

  260. Jesus unto good works. That God has

  261. before ordained that we should walk in

  262. them or live in them. So God doesn't

  263. save us because of our works, but he

  264. saved us so we can do something for him

  265. and for others.

  266. Uh every Christians, God's got a job for

  267. him.

  268. You don't have to, you know, a lot of

  269. young people are graduating from

  270. college. I need a job now. Well, we

  271. Christians don't have to worry about

  272. that. We got a job.

  273. We don't get paid for it, but we got a

  274. job

  275. to give the gospel to the lost, become a

  276. blessing to the saved, and give glory to

  277. God in everything we do. We got a job.

  278. And in the book of Titus, Paul was very

  279. much that salvation is not by works of

  280. righteousness, which we've done, but

  281. according to his mercy, he saved us.

  282. >> [clears throat]

  283. >> But he he's very very clear in Titus

  284. that we're saved to good to good works.

  285. God saved us so we can do something

  286. good. [clears throat] That's very clear

  287. in Titus 3:8. And uh and we were to be

    Titus 3:8

  288. fit for every good work. Titus 1:16.

    Titus 1:16

  289. Now in Ezra's day,

  290. the good works that God wanted done

  291. was rebuild

  292. the temple,

  293. rebuild

  294. the city,

  295. rebuild

  296. the country.

  297. That meant traveling a thousand miles to

  298. get it done.

  299. I'm probably never going back because

  300. that's not a trip you'd make too often

  301. in your life.

  302. Let's look at Ezra chapter 1.

    Ezra 1 chapter mention

  303. Now, in the first year of Cyrus, king of

  304. Persia, so that the word of the Lord by

  305. the mouth of Jeremiah might be

  306. fulfilled. Many of you are studying

  307. Jeremiah with us, uh the book of

  308. Jeremiah. We're doing verse by verse

  309. through that. The Lord stirred up the

  310. spirit of Cyrus, king of Persia, that he

  311. made a proclamation to all his kingdom,

  312. and put it in writing, saying, "Thus

  313. says Cyra, Cyrus, the king of Persia,

  314. the Lord God of heaven, hath given me

  315. all kingdoms of the earth. He's charged

  316. me to build him a house at Jerusalem,

  317. which is in Judah." That seems like a

  318. funny thing for an Iranian to say.

  319. You hear the opposite there now, right?

  320. from the river to the sea, get rid all

  321. of them.

  322. But that's what Cyrus was saying.

  323. Now, he conquered Babylon and he was the

  324. big dog. And he had a different policy

  325. than Babylon. Babylon's policy was to

  326. transplant people to other countries, to

  327. get them out of their country, to wreck

  328. their culture, to bring them into other

  329. countries where they didn't know

  330. anybody. hopefully so they'd assimilate

  331. and not be a problem. That was the

  332. culture of Babylon. They did it to

  333. everybody, not just the Jews. They

  334. conquered you. You're going on trip.

  335. Burn your city and take you out

  336. someplace else. Transplant you.

  337. There was no bloom where you're planted

  338. doctrine.

  339. Persia had a different thing to Cyrus.

  340. We're going to reverse that policy. I'm

  341. going to I'm going to make everybody

  342. want to follow me,

  343. not because they have to, because

  344. they're grateful. And everybody that has

  345. been scattered into different countries,

  346. Jews and other people, I'm going to send

  347. back to build a temple. And so he did it

  348. for the Jews, he did it for others as

  349. well. Of course, the Jews jumped on the

  350. bandwagon.

  351. Okay. So in verse uh

  352. two, thus says Cyrus, king of Persia,

  353. the Lord God of heaven, has given me all

  354. the kingdoms of the earth, and he has

  355. charged me to build him a house at

  356. Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is

  357. there among you of all his people, his

  358. God be with him. Let him go up to

  359. Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build

  360. the house of the Lord God of Israel. He

  361. He is the God which is in Jerusalem. And

  362. whoever remains in any place where he

  363. sojourns, let the men of his place help

  364. him with silver and gold and goods with

  365. beasts besides the free will offering

  366. for the house of God that's in

  367. Jerusalem.

  368. So he's reversing the previous policy of

  369. the Babylonians. And of course that's

  370. the assignment.

  371. And so now the Jewish people had 70

  372. years in Persia and Babylon and other

  373. places. Now they've got to make a

  374. decision. I've worked hard to get myself

  375. established here. Am I going to pay the

  376. price to go back

  377. to the country that's destroyed where

  378. the temple's destroyed? The city's

  379. destroyed.

  380. The country's filled with other people.

  381. Now, some Jews never got taken out.

  382. There was about 20 to 30,000. Some say

  383. even 50,000 that never left. But most of

  384. them were gone. strangers coming back.

  385. So that's the assignment from the

  386. Persian ruler.

  387. Uh uh Iran had that policy. This was 537

  388. BC.

  389. You get your

  390. minimum. Now if you look at Ezra 264,

  391. 42,360

  392. Jews did that right away.

  393. 42,360

  394. Jews went back to Jerusalem to rebuild

  395. the temple. That was their mission.

  396. And no doubt that was sacri that was

  397. very sacrificial financially for them to

  398. do that.

  399. And and uh now uh that and of course

  400. they would be joined by the 20,000 or

  401. 5,000 poor Jews that never left because

  402. they never they let the poor people

  403. stay. They just took the people educated

  404. and could do something in their country.

  405. So the Babylonians had demolished both

  406. the city and Solomon's temple. Temple

  407. was gone. City was gone. Cities in

  408. ruins. Temple's in ruins. I'm

  409. oversimplifying, but in Ezra, we're

  410. talking about the rebuilding of the

  411. temple in Jerusalem. in Nehemiah, the

  412. rebuilding of the city of Jerusalem.

  413. Now,

  414. so both Ezra and Nehemiah were on

  415. building projects and heading up

  416. building projects.

  417. Ezra was dealing with the temple.

  418. Uh Nehemiah with the city. Nehemiah was

  419. a governor, uh appointed by the

  420. Persians. Nehemiah was a Bible teacher.

  421. uh he's going to deal with the temple

  422. and Nehemiah the city.

  423. Now, here's where we come to something

  424. very practical.

  425. And this may hit you a little hard. As

  426. the old Baptist preacher said, the shoe

  427. might pinch here now

  428. because maybe we're not maybe God's

  429. priorities aren't our priorities.

  430. If God's if your priorities aren't God's

  431. priorities, you need to change your

  432. priorities.

  433. So number point A, God's temple was

  434. rebuilt before the city of Jerusalem was

  435. rebuilt. Think of that. Have you ever

  436. thought about that?

  437. First things first, second things

  438. second, third things third. I've taught

  439. whole lessons on priorities.

  440. Here are people traveling a thousand

  441. miles, spending their money to get

  442. there,

  443. and the first thing they do is rebuild

  444. the temple,

  445. not the city.

  446. Now, the city's vulnerable.

  447. It's extremely vulnerable because the

  448. walls are all torn down.

  449. any city that was going to last in the

  450. ancient near east over attack had to

  451. have walls around it.

  452. They had the walls are just a rubble.

  453. So when they're rebuilding the temple

  454. before they're rebuilding the city,

  455. that was the commission. They said the

  456. commission said nothing about rebuilding

  457. the city. It said rebuild the temple.

  458. And so these people are going to

  459. a a city that had been burned, a city

  460. that had been trashed, a cities whose

  461. walls have been knocked down, whose

  462. buildings have been knocked down.

  463. Think of that.

  464. And

  465. that means you got to live outdoors, not

  466. indoors. You're going to be camping.

  467. You're going to be vulnerable.

  468. Have you ever been camping with your

  469. family? You know, I went camping as a

  470. young man by myself. Never thought about

  471. it, but I remember the first time we

  472. took we took three of our kids on a

  473. camping trip just to get them used to

  474. camping.

  475. And I felt vulnerable.

  476. There's no door.

  477. What? You know, there's no door.

  478. And so, you know, you feel that

  479. vulnerability.

  480. A city with one like walls is like

  481. camping with an open tent.

  482. Air can walk in, a thief can walk in,

  483. murder can walk in.

  484. And I didn't feel that when I was by

  485. myself, but I certainly found that when

  486. I went camping with my family.

  487. Now there are people today

  488. who live without doors.

  489. I'm talking today.

  490. They live without walls. They live

  491. without doors. For the walls they have

  492. are very insufficient.

  493. And I've had the privilege of traveling

  494. in different mission fields. But I

  495. remember seeing an old lady. We visited

  496. her in Argentina. I don't even remember

  497. where I was. And she lived in an old

  498. concrete

  499. locked house.

  500. No doors.

  501. No doors. No way to lock the door.

  502. There's nothing there. Just an opening.

  503. She slept on a mattress on the floor.

  504. Someone was probably in her 80s.

  505. Now, not all of Argentina's that way.

  506. Argentina's got some really nice places,

  507. but in that particular neighborhood,

  508. that's where she was.

  509. Dave Flake will be with us and he's

  510. starting a church in Eureka, which is

  511. the northern part of Chile. But before

  512. that, they uh started a church in a city

  513. a little bit south of there. And in that

  514. city, Linda and I were over there and we

  515. saw and that's a modern city. They do

  516. modern work, but there was up on the

  517. mountain side there was a city. There

  518. was a whole neighborhood of cardboard

  519. houses. Cardboard,

  520. no roof.

  521. It doesn't rain up there. They didn't

  522. need a roof. This is on Pagasta. It

  523. doesn't rain.

  524. No roof.

  525. And all you had as walls was cardboard.

  526. I remember being in South Africa and we

  527. had one of the elders in Mike's church

  528. was taking us and I've told this story

  529. before. But we were in um

  530. wasn't Johannesburg or someplace else.

  531. John, do you remember where we were? I

  532. forgot. But um it's a very famous place.

  533. Anyway, they had a we were walking down

  534. and this gal had had a heart attack.

  535. and she needed some help with her roof.

  536. Now, South South Africa got some really

  537. nice homes, really nice neighborhoods

  538. and very adequate places, but in this

  539. place, it wasn't so nice. And so, we

  540. were walking down with these 10

  541. corugated

  542. uh things on our heads, trying to hold

  543. them up and go down in this mud path.

  544. And here was a gal. She'd had a heart

  545. attack. She went to Mike's church.

  546. No running water, one electric bulb in a

  547. mud hut.

  548. All four walls were mud.

  549. She didn't have money for it.

  550. So, what we were doing is replacing her

  551. roof. And we did that for her and she

  552. was so grateful. But no running water.

  553. She had a thing of water outside and uh

  554. one electric bulb in that mud hut. And

  555. she wasn't the only one. There were

  556. hundreds

  557. in that neighborhood.

  558. Like

  559. I think they called it the land of a

  560. thousand hills. I called it the land of

  561. a thousand heart attacks. I thought I

  562. was going to die

  563. up out of there. But what I'm saying is

  564. there are people today, that was 20

  565. years ago when John and I were there.

  566. But there are people today that live in

  567. places where they have no doors

  568. or the doors they have couldn't keep

  569. anybody out.

  570. So when you're in that situation, think

  571. about how in the ancient world walls

  572. were important. Walls with big gates

  573. that could be shut. Walls that were high

  574. that couldn't be climbed over.

  575. So if you're attacked, you've got some s

  576. some some uh you you have some

  577. protection.

  578. But the first thing that was built was

  579. not walls. The first thing that was

  580. built

  581. that was commissioned to be built was a

  582. temple.

  583. And that that just shocks you the

  584. priorities here.

  585. Do you know the pilgrim fathers when

  586. they came to America? If you've I've

  587. read several accounts of that and I've

  588. been to I've been over there in

  589. Massachusetts where they landed

  590. and

  591. they've got re they've rebuilt a village

  592. there. You know, the first thing they

  593. built was not their own. By the way,

  594. they didn't build cabins.

  595. Thinks it was cabins. No, they they had

  596. these conical

  597. things. They built cabins came later uh

  598. by other people out of Denmark. But for

  599. them, they they they didn't even build

  600. their houses first. They built what they

  601. called a common house, which was for

  602. defense.

  603. Guess how big it was? 20 by 20.

  604. 20 by 20.

  605. And so they built that first. And that

  606. was protection was a priority. and had

  607. these old cannons that probably couldn't

  608. hit anything, but they had them other

  609. stuff.

  610. In Ezra, there was priorities.

  611. Temple first

  612. before walls.

  613. It doesn't seem right. Doesn't seem

  614. normal.

  615. It doesn't seem prudent.

  616. Without walls you have no protection.

  617. So the first thing they built it the

  618. first thing point here is God in Ezra

  619. God's temple was built before the city

  620. of Jerusalem was rebuilt. They rebuilt

  621. the temple before they rebuilt the

  622. walls. Nehemiah came later to build the

  623. walls. That's the book of Nehemiah. But

  624. Ezra is about building the rebuilding

  625. the temple.

  626. Do we spend all our time for ourselves

  627. to protect ourselves to provide for

  628. ourelves or do we spend time in God's

  629. work?

  630. Seek first the kingdom of God and his

  631. righteousness. That's what Jesus said.

  632. >> Amen.

  633. >> That's what Jesus said.

  634. And all these other things will be added

  635. to you.

  636. Everybody else is seeking something else

  637. first. Money first, fame first,

  638. something else first. You seek first the

  639. kingdom of God and his righteousness.

  640. Put that first as your priority.

  641. Now, so the temple was a prioritized o

  642. over the walls. And only after the

  643. temple was built do you start getting

  644. walls.

  645. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

  646. Before you had a temple, there was

  647. something even of a greater priority

  648. than a temple.

  649. The first thing they built in Ezra was

  650. an altar. You say, "Well, the altar is

  651. part of the temple." That's right. The

  652. altar is part of the temple, but they

  653. built the altar before they built the

  654. temple.

  655. The altar was destroyed. They knew where

  656. it was, and they built a new altar on

  657. the same place the old altar was.

  658. So, the altar is rebuilt before the

  659. temple. They didn't want to have, you

  660. know, you'd think, oh, they'll finish

  661. the temple first and then they'll build

  662. the altar inside. No, altar first.

  663. Now you're camping out

  664. or you've got some kind of rough thing

  665. to live in

  666. and you're focusing on the altar.

  667. It's fascinating because what's the

  668. altar all about? The altar is about

  669. animal sacrifice. The altar is where the

  670. blood of the sacrifice went.

  671. And in Old Testament religion, if you

  672. couldn't butcher an animal, you'd be in

  673. bad shape because you had to butcher

  674. your own animal

  675. and then give it to the priest and he

  676. put the blood on the altar

  677. and you had a real hit. My sin cost this

  678. animal their life.

  679. How's that for getting you ready to

  680. worship?

  681. You read Leviticus chapter 1 and the

    Leviticus 1 chapter mention

  682. burnt offering and then you go to

  683. chapter 4 and the sin offering. You'd

  684. confess your sin over the animal's head

  685. and you would kill the animal. You'd

  686. slice their neck and the animal bleed

  687. out and then the priest would get it and

  688. put it on the blood on the altar.

  689. You say that's gruesome.

  690. It is gruesome. I'll tell you something

  691. more gruesome. the son of God on the

  692. cross of Calvary bleeding for your sins

  693. and mine.

  694. That's gruesome.

  695. So the altar was before the temple. They

  696. didn't wait for the temple to get

  697. finished and then build the altar. The

  698. altar is first. I repeat, the altar is

  699. first. And you know what? The cross of

  700. Calvary should be first. We should be

  701. preaching Jesus Christ and him

  702. crucified.

  703. That's the main thing. Keep the main

  704. thing the main thing. Isn't that

  705. biblical? Keep the main.

  706. There's many things in the Bible and

  707. preachers get mixed up and they get off

  708. on this and they get off on that. They

  709. specialize in this, they specialize on

  710. that.

  711. But Paul said, "God forbid that I should

  712. glory saved in the cross of the Lord

  713. Jesus Christ by whom the world is

  714. crucified to me and I to him

  715. and I to them." See, pardon. So their

  716. priorities were right. They had the

  717. right priorities.

  718. And the right priority was to put the

  719. altar first.

  720. And where was that? Why? Where was that

  721. temple? And where was that altar?

  722. It was in Jerusalem.

  723. Oh, but that's not all.

  724. It was in the very spot Abraham was told

  725. to offer up Isaac

  726. 2,000 years before Jesus was born.

  727. In Abraham's mind, Isaac was dead for

  728. three days.

  729. You think the Bible isn't of God? You

  730. think that's some kind of accident?

  731. Isaac was delivered right there on Mount

  732. Mariah.

  733. And that's the very spot where King

  734. David a thousand years after Abraham

  735. built an altar to the Lord because of

  736. his sin and numbering the people and

  737. people were dying

  738. and the blood of that altar

  739. saved the people.

  740. So the temple of the Jews and the altar

  741. in the temple was built on a historical

  742. place. There was a history to it. Why?

  743. Because God controls history.

  744. The real God controls history.

  745. There's no accidents here. This isn't

  746. coincidence here. This isn't designed

  747. here. Where was the cross of Calvary?

  748. Same place.

  749. So God help us to grasp some of these

  750. things. to the right altar and the right

  751. not just any kind of altar, not just any

  752. altar, an altar in the right place. A

  753. new altar was built on the original

  754. site, the site of Abraham in Genesis 22

  755. and the sight of David in 2 Samuel

  756. exactly where the old altar was placed

  757. in Solomon's temple. And even and now

  758. that the temple's being rebuilt, it's

  759. put in the same place. So read Genesis

  760. 22 and 2 Samuel 24 and you'll get some

  761. of that.

  762. Listen, when you're building for God,

  763. you better have a good re rear view

  764. mirror.

  765. Why? When you drive a car, do you have a

  766. rear view mirror?

  767. It's not enough to look ahead. You got

  768. to know what's behind you as well.

  769. If you're going to drive safely,

  770. we need to know the Old Testament.

  771. That's our rear view mirror.

  772. That's the rear view mirror on the left

  773. side. The other rear view mirror is the

  774. New Testament on the right side.

  775. We got to know what's behind us if we're

  776. going to be a safe driver. But you don't

  777. just look into the rearview mirror all

  778. the time either. you'll crash into

  779. somebody else. You got to look ahead.

  780. And that's true of a business. It's true

  781. of a household. It's true of a church.

  782. You got to look, you got to have a

  783. rearview mirror, but you got to have you

  784. got to be looking forward. We're looking

  785. forward to the death, not to the

  786. resurrection of the Lord Jesus that

  787. died.

  788. But we're looking back to the Lord Jesus

  789. that died. We're looking ahead to the

  790. Lord Jesus's coming.

  791. Now, that's all very important. May God

  792. help us to hear this.

  793. God's priorities must become our

  794. priorities. And there's a good lesson

  795. there right there from the book of Ezra.

  796. Are they Are God's priorities our

  797. priorities? God's priority was get that

  798. temple running.

  799. Exile's over.

  800. Are God's priorities ours? John the

  801. Baptist said, God John the Baptist was

  802. that way. He said, "If Jesus, he must

  803. increase. I must decrease." I'm good

  804. with that.

  805. Paul said, "God forbid that I should

  806. glory save on the cross of Jesus

  807. Christ." Don't put your faith in me. As

  808. George Whitfield said, "A minister is a

  809. poor savior in the day of judgment.

  810. Trust Jesus, not me."

  811. Jesus said, "Seek you first the kingdom

  812. of God." So may God help us to do that.

  813. Now, that brings us to Nehemiah

  814. to turn over from Ezra to Nehemiah. And

  815. again, we're just dipping into these

  816. books.

  817. Nehemiah's job was to rebuild the city.

  818. Remember, Ezra is rebuilding the temple,

  819. the Jewish temple. Nehemiah's job, he's

  820. a governor, provisional governor, is to

  821. rebuild the city. That's a big job.

  822. and he's busy doing that. He's got a

  823. commission to do that and he's doing it.

  824. But the people of the land didn't like

  825. it.

  826. They didn't want it rebuilt

  827. any more than the people of the land

  828. today want the Jews to rebuild their

  829. temple.

  830. And so these folks were doing their best

  831. to discourage everything that was going

  832. on.

  833. Do you think you can start a church and

  834. keep a church going and then grow a

  835. church without opposition?

  836. Not going to happen. You can't even have

  837. a Bible study without opposition. You

  838. can't even have children without

  839. opposition.

  840. Try to raise them for the Lord. You

  841. think you can do that in a fallen world?

  842. Think that's an easy assignment? I'm

  843. going to tell you, it's impossible.

  844. apart from God's grace and God's

  845. guidance, God's intervention.

  846. Now, Nehemiah's got a big job. He's got

  847. to rebuild the city and he's rebuilding

  848. the walls. So, find it's the city walls

  849. that he's rebuilding.

  850. But in Nehemiah chapter 6,

    Nehemiah 6 chapter mention

  851. there's some people don't want those

  852. walls rebuilt

  853. and they're they're doing everything to

  854. hinder it. And so in Nehemiah chapter 6,

    Nehemiah 6 chapter mention

  855. they invite Nehemiah to a meeting. We

  856. don't like what you're doing, but you

  857. come down and talk about it. We'll have

  858. a pow-wow. Sounds like the Iranians with

  859. the Americans right now. Let's talk.

  860. Do you think they were sincere with

  861. that?

  862. Now, some people are. Maybe you need to

  863. talk something out. But in this case,

  864. notice what happened. Nehemiah 6:1. Now

    Nehemiah 6:1

  865. it came to pass when San Ballot and

  866. Tobaya and Gisham the Arabian and the

  867. rest of our enemies heard that I built

  868. the wall and that there was no breach

  869. left in it. Though at the time I had not

  870. yet set up the doors upon the gates. So

  871. walls built the gates aren't. It's

  872. almost getting close to being done.

  873. Then Sam Ballad and Gisham sent to me

  874. saying come let's meet together in one

  875. of the villages in the plain of Uno. And

  876. they thought to do me mischief. If he

  877. read that like a book,

  878. they want to assassinate me.

  879. They want to stop this project.

  880. They kill me. They figure the project

  881. will be over.

  882. Listen, if the pastor dies, the church

  883. should go on without him.

  884. You think you need a pastor to go on?

  885. Open hot.

  886. Pastors die too. You know that.

  887. You know, the church is bigger than a

  888. pastor, even a good pastor.

  889. So, some things stop when the leader

  890. dies, but not all things.

  891. So, the head of the church is Jesus

  892. Christ. He can make it go on even

  893. without the leadership.

  894. You say, "Well, how's that going to

  895. work?"

  896. Wait and find out. Maybe I'll die before

  897. the sermon's over. You'll find out.

  898. But notice in verse three, and I sent

  899. messengers to them, saying, I am doing a

  900. great work, so I cannot come down. Why

  901. should the work cease while I leave it

  902. and come down to you?

  903. I'm doing a great work. I'm not going to

  904. be diverted. I'm not going to be uh uh

  905. uh talked out of what I'm doing. I'm not

  906. going to have you take my time. I'm

  907. doing a great work. I can't come down.

  908. I'm too busy.

  909. That was his answer.

  910. And notice in verse four, yet they sent

  911. to me four times in this way.

  912. And I answered them after the same

  913. manner.

  914. Four times they said, come down and

  915. meet. Four times he's saying, I'm doing

  916. a great work. I can't come down.

  917. He read them like a book. He knew their

  918. motives. He refused to alter his

  919. priority. I've got a job to do for the

  920. Lord and it's build this city and build

  921. the walls and I'm not going to stop till

  922. it's over.

  923. Alter first,

  924. wall second.

  925. Priorities.

  926. Ezra built the altar.

  927. Nehemiah built the wall.

  928. You and I need biblically in biblically

  929. inspired and biblically directed

  930. priorities in our lives.

  931. Moving about with no priorities is a bad

  932. way to live.

  933. And so may God help us.

  934. And we must be willing to have a

  935. a diminished life

  936. if we will help the work of God go

  937. forward. Nehemiah had kind of a cushy

  938. job. He was the wine tester for the the

  939. leader of the whole whole empire. He

  940. left that to go thousand miles and live

  941. in Jerusalem and become a governor. Now

  942. for most of us a governor would be a

  943. promotion but for him it was a demotion.

  944. But his heart was in God's word.

  945. We must be willing to have a a so-called

  946. diminished life if that will help the

  947. work of God both go forward.

  948. Uh maybe less grand or less spectacular.

  949. I'm okay with that. I don't have to have

  950. the biggest house everybody else has

  951. got. I'm not in that race. I don't have

  952. to have the big best car everybody else

  953. has got. Not in that race.

  954. I got That's not wrong to have big house

  955. or big cars or nice cars. I'm not saying

  956. that. I'm just saying we got bigger

  957. things to do, right? God gives you a

  958. nice house and a car. Nothing wrong with

  959. that.

  960. But God's priorities must be our

  961. priorities. Are they? John the Baptist

  962. said of Jesus, "He must increase. I must

  963. decrease." That's my priority.

  964. I want Jesus people more people to

  965. follow him, more people to think about

  966. him, less people to think about me.

  967. So

  968. when we read our Bibles, first things

  969. first, second things second, third

  970. things third. Ezra had priorities.

  971. Nehemiah had ripp priorities. That cuts

  972. the clutter out of your life. Well, in

  973. my case, it increases the clutter

  974. because I can't I don't always stop

  975. clean everything up. I'm just busy

  976. preparing sermons and doing stuff.

  977. So that's a fascinating thing. God's

  978. work is a great work and it must not be

  979. neglected.

  980. And then there's a fifth invitation. Uh

  981. and it sounded friendly, but it was not

  982. friendly at all. There was assassination

  983. plot behind all of it. And uh

  984. you know, if they really wanted to meet

  985. with him, they could have come to

  986. Jerusalem.

  987. You know, if you really want to meet

  988. somebody, you say, "I'll come to your

  989. place.

  990. So Nehemiah recognized this is a a

  991. veiled attempt on his life and he wasn't

  992. lured away.

  993. Um

  994. leadership always involves strife.

  995. If you're a leader, you're going to make

  996. somebody mad. They're not going to like

  997. the way you do it. Nehemiah was a

  998. leader. People didn't like what he

  999. wanted what he was doing.

1000. You better just get if you're in the

1001. ministry and you even if you're leading

1002. a Bible study or Sunday school class,

1003. somebody's not going to like what you're

1004. doing or how you're doing it.

1005. Somebody's going to say, "Come down.

1006. We're going to talk this out.

1007. I don't have time for that. I'm busy for

1008. the Lord. You do your thing. I'll do

  1009. mine."

1010. So, these enemies had a secret agenda.

1011. They wanted to remove the person

1012. responsible for the success of the whole

  1013. project. That was

1014. and they were persistent. But listen, he

  1015. was equally persistent.

1016. They were equally they were persistent

1017. in trying to get him to quit to come

1018. down. He was equally pers persistent in

  1019. steadfastly resisting

  1020. their attempts.

1021. We do not let God's enemies and our

1022. enemies define reality for us.

  1023. That's God's role,

1024. not theirs and even not ours.

1025. Those that despise gospel work,

1026. ridicule, hate it, uh let them be what

1027. they are, but we got a work to do.

1028. All of God's work is great work.

1029. Even if it's in a very humble place and

  1030. a hard place,

1031. you don't come down. Paul said, "I'm not

1032. ashamed of the gospel of Christ. It's

1033. the power of God to salvation."

1034. So Nehemiah, it was the great work of

1035. his life was not being a cup bearer for

1036. the king of Persia. It was to be a wall

1037. builder for the King of Kings.

1038. Um, you and I are doing a greater work

  1039. than we realize.

  1040. We'll find out someday. Let's have a

  1041. high view of it.

1042. Nehemiah knew who he was and he knew

1043. what God's work was and he wouldn't come

1044. down. So their first point in Ezra,

1045. God's priority must become our

1046. priorities. Second point in Nehemiah,

1047. God's work is a great work and must not

1048. be neglected. Third point, go over to

  1049. Esther,

1050. the next book over Queen Esther.

1051. And we actually looked at this verse

1052. uh when we we taught Esther a little bit

1053. and remember there's a prime minister of

1054. Iran at that point wanted to kill every

1055. single Jew there was everywhere and

1056. Esther was drafted and being the queen

1057. she didn't ask for that of the land and

1058. the husband didn't know what was going

1059. on and [clears throat] Mori her cousin

1060. is encouraging her and we looked at

1061. verse 13 then Mori commands to Esther,

1062. "Think not with yourself that you'll

1063. escape in the king's house more than all

1064. the Jews. For if you hold your peace at

  1065. this time, verse 14, 4:14,

1066. deliverance will arise from to the Jews

1067. from another place that you and your

1068. father's house will be destroyed. And

1069. who knows whether you are come to the

1070. kingdom for such a time as this?

  1071. You're in a position I'm not. You're in

1072. a position other Jews are not. You're

  1073. you're queen. He doesn't know you're a

  1074. Jew.

1075. That's it. Open your mouth.

  1076. Think about it.

1077. God's work will and who knows and who

1078. whether you come to the kingdom in a

1079. time of this. And he also says something

  1080. very interesting.

1081. He says in verse 14, "If you hold your

1082. peace at this time, then shall there

1083. relief and deliverance arise to the Jews

  1084. from another place."

1085. In other words, if you don't do it,

1086. God will get somebody else

1087. to do what needs to be done.

1088. You're the likely candidate, but if you

1089. don't do it, God will get somebody else.

1090. And that's my third point. God's work

1091. will be done whether we do it or not.

1092. God's work will be done whether we do it

1093. or not. God buries his workman but the

1094. work goes on. We are not indispensable.

1095. It is true we're immortal till our work

1096. is done. But it's also true if we don't

1097. do it the work will get done by somebody

  1098. else.

1099. Think about this. Elijah was replaced by

1100. Elisha. Moses was replaced by Joshua.

1101. Reuben was replaced by Judah. Such a one

1102. was replaced by Boaz. God's work will be

  1103. accomplished.

1104. God's work will move ahead on schedule.

1105. You murder you murder Abel and Seth.

1106. Seth will replace him. The blood of the

1107. martyrs is the seed of the church.

1108. God buries his workmen, but the work

1109. goes on. But and we like Esther are

  1110. placed in a particular

1111. uh geographical location, a particular

  1112. family, a particular school, a

1113. particular job, a particular city where

1114. we can do something that others can't

1115. do. But if we don't do it, God will get

1116. somebody else to do it

1117. because God's work will be done whether

1118. we do it or not. If Saul can't fight

1119. Goliath, little David will take him out.

1120. If the apostle James is beheaded in Acts

1121. 12, Paul will and Silas will replace him

1122. and go into all the world. The New

1123. Testament and third John kicks people

1124. out of his church for supporting

1125. missionaries. Little Gaes will send them

1126. on their way after a godly sword. God's

1127. work will be done whether we do it or

1128. not. You say, "How's that work with the

1129. sovereignty of God? How's that work with

1130. the responsibility of man?" I don't care

1131. about that question. I'm telling this

1132. this to you. God's work will be done. If

1133. you don't do it, he'll have somebody

1134. else do it. He knows whether you're

1135. going to do it or not. He's sovereign.

  1136. I'm just simply saying you're

  1137. responsible.

  1138. And

1139. each of us has a job or put in a certain

  1140. place to do something.

1141. Why was Paul put in the Philippian jail?

1142. Why'd he get beat up,

1143. tied to the wall, locked in?

1144. Why was he unjustly accused? Cuz there

1145. was a jailer in this family that needed

  1146. to be saved.

1147. Is that what was going on?

1148. So God put Paul in

1149. touch with the jailer and the jailer in

  1150. Paul with Paul.

1151. So may God help us. Why did Paul get

  1152. kicked out of Thessalonica?

1153. And because there were Bereans that

1154. needed to hear the gospel that heard, so

1155. he got kicked out of that town. So he

1156. went to the next and those people were

  1157. more receptive.

1158. So these are three points to glean from

1159. these three books. Uh God's priorities

1160. must be our priorities and the big

1161. question is are they? God's work is a

1162. great work and must not be neglected.

1163. Even if I'm not doing the main thing, I

  1164. can do something

1165. and God's work will be done whether we

  1166. do it or not.

  1167. If Martha won't

  1168. love the Bible study,

  1169. Mary will

1170. sit at Jesus feet and hear his word.

1171. So, I challenge each of us

1172. to think of these priorities.

  1173. Now, if you're not a Christian, here's a

  1174. priority for you.

1175. This is our fourth point.

1176. God's greatest work is not providential.

1177. We're not talking, we were talking

1178. providential here in all these points.

1179. who builds the city, who builds the

1180. temple, who bu builds the altar and all

  1181. of that.

1182. God's great work is not providential,

  1183. but supernatural.

1184. After Jesus fed the 5,000, he began to

1185. preach himself as the bread of heaven

1186. that comes down out of heaven. And the

1187. people said, "What must we do to do the

  1188. work of God?"

1189. Jesus said, "This is the work of God.

1190. Believe on him whom he sent.

1191. Believe on him whom he sent. If you're

1192. not a Christian, that's what God wants

  1193. out of you.

1194. That's what God wants out of you.

1195. Believe on him whom he sent. Have you

1196. put your Have you repented of your sins

1197. and put your faith in the Savior?

1198. His blood is on God's altar. He is God's

  1199. temple

1200. and certainly serving him is the

1201. greatest thing you can do with your

1202. life. Nothing comes even close to it.

1203. Father, we thank you for what we've

  1204. learned this morning.

1205. A lot of things to jump about to try to

1206. get these points in with us today. But

1207. we ask that you'd be working in our

1208. lives that which is pleasing in your

  1209. sight.

1210. We're not in the Old Testament

  1211. dispensation as

1212. Ezra and Nehemiah and Esther were, but

1213. we we have our responsibility in the

1214. church age. May we be about our father's

  1215. business

  1216. in Jesus name. Amen.

  1217. >> Stand. Turn 411.

  1218. 411.
