  1. you need to be for tonight.

  2. I think some of you that are not from

  3. this area may not have done this yet,

  4. but a lot of us here have probably been

  5. to Old Man's Cave.

  6. I'll start out with that.

  7. And if you go to Old Man's Cave, one of

  8. my favorite places to be in this area,

  9. you get past the parking lot, you go

  10. down into the gorge that that is down

  11. there and you see the beauty and you're

  12. walking and you're walking. It's the

  13. fall of the year. It's really pretty.

  14. You pass old man's cave and then you

  15. finally after you're a little bit worn

  16. out after probably about 40 minutes of

  17. walking or so, you get down where the

  18. waterfall is at the end. Everybody knows

  19. what I'm talking about that's been

  20. there. And u certainly worth it. I I I

  21. uh I've been going to that cave since

  22. the 1950s

  23. as a young man. We would come over from

  24. Chilikath kids and we'd go over there.

  25. But I never tire of it. And to me the

  26. trip is always worth it.

  27. Restful.

  28. uh

  29. peaceful,

  30. but the stress really releases once you

  31. get down there and you can you you've

  32. walked and paid the price to be where

  33. you are and you can just sit

  34. and enjoy God's creation.

  35. Trying to forget that you have to go up

  36. those great big steps to get back. Just

  37. put that out of your mind at that point.

  38. But you just sit and rest.

  39. Well, it's been a long journey through

  40. the book of Jeremiah to this point

  41. and it hasn't been an easy journey. It's

  42. not really a pleasant journey. All these

  43. messages of judgment

  44. as were necessary to be given.

  45. Uh but you know, you kind of get tired

  46. of hearing about idolatry. You kind of

  47. get tired of hearing about judgment on

  48. idolattors and spiritual adultery and

  49. the confrontations and the admonitions

  50. and the exhortations.

  51. You you'd say, "Pastor, I'm I'm kind of

  52. tired of the book of Jeremiah. It's been

  53. helpful to me, but 29 chapters of that

  54. is about enough." And then we get to

  55. chapter 30

  56. and everything in those 29 chapters

  57. were which are so laborious

  58. is preparing us for where we are now.

  59. And Jeremiah has been very

  60. confrontational.

  61. He's done his job. Nobody likes him.

  62. He's been exposing the false teachers.

  63. He's been proclaiming the truth in the

  64. gospel. Uh they they arrested him at one

  65. point. Uh they wanted to have him

  66. executed at after that. But now

  67. we're coming to another part of the

  68. book.

  69. Now we're right on the edge

  70. of the exile.

  71. In fact, if you do the math on all of

  72. this, the Babylonians are at the door

  73. and Jeremiah's prophecies have come true

  74. and the false prophets are have been

  75. exposed and people are now ready for

  76. something different. And guess what?

  77. They get

  78. messages of comfort.

  79. It's pretty obvious now that they're

  80. going to go into captivity and they're

  81. going to have to live a thousand miles

  82. away from Jerusalem

  83. in the in the Babylon in in northern

  84. Iraq

  85. and the center of idolatry. And they're

  86. going to be there for a lifetime.

  87. Not two years like the false prophet

  88. said. Two years and we'll never bo.

  89. If you get a 70year sentence, that's

  90. almost the same as a life sentence,

  91. isn't it? I mean,

  92. probably.

  93. And so 70 years in Babylon and it wants

  94. 70. It turned out to be 70.

  95. But when we when we're we're dealing

  96. with this particular section in

  97. Jeremiah, chapter 29 is like an

    Jeremiah 29 chapter mention

  98. escalator. It takes us from the floor of

  99. judgment that this book has been all

  100. about up to the comfort section.

  101. And the faith the faithful prophet

  102. Jeremiah has been given the bad news.

  103. Bad news. Bad news. Bad news. Everybody

  104. hates him for it. He's done it. He He

  105. did it because God told him to do it.

  106. But now he gets to give the good news.

  107. Fact, the best possible news.

  108. And there's no way we can possibly cover

  109. this section the way we want to. And

  110. there's no way I can tell you the

  111. absolute significance of these chapters,

  112. chapters 30 and 31,

  113. 32. They are incredibly important.

  114. Every time we take the Lord's supper,

  115. we remember the words of Jesus. This is

  116. the New Testament in my blood. This do

  117. in remembrance of me. And do you know

  118. what that refers to? It refers to this

  119. section. The new covenant and the New

  120. Testament are one and the same.

  121. And Jesus took Passover, they ate a

  122. Passover meal, and then he took Passover

  123. bread and Passover wine and introduced

  124. the Lord's supper.

  125. But the background of that is chapter 31

    Isaiah 31 chapter mention

  126. of Jeremiah. And if you know the

  127. background, you are going to enjoy the

  128. Lord's supper so much more.

  129. It's going to be deeper for you every

  130. time you take it. It's going to be

  131. richer for you every time you take it.

  132. And the significance of these chapters

  133. for the nation of Israel back in

  134. Jeremiah's day or for ourselves in this

  135. day

  136. cannot be measured by the human mind.

  137. prophetically, esqueologically,

  138. sotiologically,

  139. christoologgically.

  140. There's not hardly an area of systematic

  141. theology that is not touched by this

  142. section of scripture,

  143. but it's meant to be comfort.

  144. Have you ever tried to comfort somebody

  145. and I mean, they're really in their

  146. darkest, darkest, darkest, darkest

  147. time of trouble?

  148. The kind of people that say, "I'm so far

  149. down, I have to reach up to touch

  150. bottom."

  151. That kind of person, that kind of place.

  152. That That's where they were when the

  153. Babylonians are at the door.

  154. It was going to happen. They were going

  155. to go into exile.

  156. And God's word was true. And they fought

  157. it. And now they know that Jeremiah was

  158. right. and and and they know these it's

  159. going to be a lifechanging altering

  160. thing and they not only is it going to

  161. be tough but they were against it

  162. and so here it is

  163. and I remember in Isaiah 40:3 Isaiah

    Isaiah 40:3

  164. said through the ministry of those

  165. sections comfort she comfort you my

  166. people says the Lord after He He gave

  167. them the bad news. He gives them the

  168. good news.

  169. So there's a comfort in these chapters

  170. of the book after the first 29 passages

  171. of exhortation and judgment and

  172. exposure. That's amazing.

  173. Let me quote what Warren Wearsby the

  174. Bible teacher said about this section.

  175. What life does to us depends largely on

  176. what life finds in us. If we seek the

  177. Lord and want, then circumstances will

  178. build us and prepare us for what he has

  179. planned. If we rebel or if we look for a

  180. quick and easy shortcuts, then

  181. circumstances will destroy us and rob us

  182. of the future God wants us to enjoy. The

  183. same sun that melts the ice also hardens

  184. the clay.

  185. God's thoughts and plans concerning us

  186. come from his heart and lead us to his

  187. peace.

  188. Why look

  189. for substitutes?

  190. So very important stuff.

  191. Now, um,

  192. let me We all need comfort. We all need

  193. consolation.

  194. And I, there was a movie years ago was

  195. very violent, some vile language in it.

  196. But the one man, all I heard was he

  197. said, "Life is hard and then you die."

  198. Well, that's a pretty bleak outlook.

  199. You know, life is hard and we know we're

  200. going to die. But is that all there is?

  201. How about this? Life is hard, then you

  202. die, then you rule and reign forever.

  203. You see that? That that's a tale on

  204. there. That's different. That didn't

  205. make the movie.

  206. Life is hard. We will die if Jesus

  207. terries and the rapture doesn't happen.

  208. But there's more to it. Life is hard.

  209. Then you die. Then you're raised and

  210. reigned forever.

  211. That's putting present sufferings in

  212. perspective

  213. of future blessings.

  214. That's what we have to do.

  215. That's what we must do. And this section

  216. is going to help us do it and be

  217. enabling us to do it. And so, let me

  218. read it and then I'm going to read what

  219. some people have said about it. Then

  220. we're going to get started. Uh it takes

  221. a big run because this is a long

  222. section, 24 verses, and we won't get to

  223. 31, which is the heart of the heart of

  224. the heart of it, the new covenant. But

  225. I'll read a little bit of it for you

  226. tonight. Jeremiah 30, the word that came

  227. to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, "Thus

  228. speaketh the Lord God of Israel, saying,

  229. write all the words that I've spoken

  230. unto thee in a book.

  231. For lo, the days come, says the Lord,

  232. I'll bring again the captivity of my

  233. people Israel and Judah, saeth the Lord.

  234. Now, we read over those words and we

  235. don't always stop and think about what

  236. he's saying.

  237. What's the difference between Israel and

  238. Judah?

  239. Judah is the name of the two southern

  240. tribes.

  241. Israel is the name of the 10 northern

  242. tribes.

  243. The 10 northern tribes were taken

  244. captive into Assyria in 722 BC.

  245. We're now down almost to when the two

  246. southern tribes would be taken into

  247. captivity in 586 BC. Now remember,

  248. you're going backwards. The smaller the

  249. number, the closer it is to the birth of

  250. Jesus. The larger the number, the

  251. farther away. The 722 BC was a lot long

  252. was it happened a lot uh farther back

  253. than 586 BC.

  254. So,

  255. think about what's going on here. I will

  256. bring again the captive of my people

  257. Israel and Judah, says the Lord. Wait,

  258. you mean it's not just the tribe of

  259. Judah

  260. that's coming back?

  261. It's not just the southern kingdom,

  262. Judah and Benjamin. It's it's going to

  263. be the others. They've been gone so

  264. long.

  265. We've half forgot about them. God

  266. didn't.

  267. They were scattered all through Assyria.

  268. These people are going to go to Babylon.

  269. The Assyrian Empire has ended. The

  270. Babylonian Empire has begun. But the

  271. Babylonian Empire is not going to last

  272. very long. We got 70 years and it's

  273. going to be gone.

  274. So, it's don't don't miss that.

  275. The 10 northern tribes make up Israel.

  276. The 10 southern tribes make the two 10

  277. the two southern tribes make up Judah.

  278. Uh and

  279. uh says the Lord. Just like you got

  280. Athens County and Athens city. Sometimes

  281. it refers to the family, sometimes the

  282. person, sometimes the tribe and so

  283. forth.

  284. and I will cause them to return to the

  285. land that I gave to their fathers and

  286. they shall possess it.

  287. So, we've seen that before in Jeremiah,

  288. but every time I read it, it's like

  289. people when they read it the first time,

  290. they must have been shocked.

  291. Everybody's coming back. I thought it

  292. was just us,

  293. but they were long gone.

  294. And these are the words the Lord spoke

  295. concerning Israel and concerning Judah.

  296. Okay, there it is. Again,

  297. the word Jacob refers to all the tribes

  298. collectively, but it gets specific.

  299. Israel is the is sometimes all of them,

  300. but often it's northern tribes when it's

  301. used for Judah and they're the southern.

  302. For thus says the Lord, we have heard a

  303. voice of trembling, of fear, and not of

  304. peace. Ask now and see whether a man

  305. doth travail with child. When the last

  306. time you saw a pregnant man in labor?

  307. Well, why are all these why are all

  308. these uh Judeian soldiers bending over

  309. in pain? Because the Babylonians are

  310. coming.

  311. Why do I see every man with his hands on

  312. his loins like a woman in travail and

  313. all faces turned into palenness? Alas,

  314. for that day is great. So there's none

  315. like it. It's even the time of Jacob's

  316. trouble. but he'll be saved out of it.

  317. Now,

  318. when men men have the duty to go out and

  319. fight foreign wars and risk their life

  320. or maybe give their life so their family

  321. can be protected.

  322. The counterpart of that for women is

  323. what?

  324. Having babies.

  325. wife risk her life to bring children in

  326. and the pain she endures there is and

  327. the potential death although thank God

  328. we don't die as much in child birth as

  329. we used to in this country

  330. she's risking her life for her potential

  331. family and for the baby in her womb

  332. and the men endure pain in warfare the

  333. women endure pain in childbirth it's a

  334. fallen world. There's no way to get

  335. around it. But here's that unusual,

  336. strange illustration. What are the men

  337. doing acting like women in travail?

  338. It's because the Babylonians are coming

  339. and they're losing it.

  340. The men are losing it.

  341. Just like the wife right before the

  342. baby, I don't think I can do this. and

  343. the men are kind of questioning

  344. their ability to handle what's going to

  345. happen. And and he said, "So that's the

  346. illustration." And I think the women can

  347. appreciate this better than the men.

  348. They know what he's talking about.

  349. The men

  350. were melting

  351. in emotional fear

  352. and agony.

  353. The Babylonians are coming. They're

  354. circling the city. They're going to come

  355. in. I can't protect my family.

  356. We're not We're going to be defeated.

  357. Alas, that day is great.

  358. So that none is like it. It's even the

  359. time of Jacob's trouble, but he shall be

  360. saved out of it. Now, there's something

  361. I'm going to say now.

  362. that will be reinforced by what some

  363. others have said on this chapter.

  364. I definitely believe

  365. that there there's two levels of this

  366. in this prophecy. There's a near

  367. fulfillment and there's a far

  368. fulfillment.

  369. The near fulfillment was the coming of

  370. the Babylonians

  371. and the encircling of Jerusalem and the

  372. taking captive of the people. The far

  373. fulfillment

  374. is the seven-year tribulation yet to

  375. come. That is the time of Jacob's

  376. trouble, the ultimate time.

  377. But he'll be saved out of it. And

  378. remember verse 7 says, "For that day is

  379. great, so there's none like it." There

  380. was none like it up to 586 BC. But when

  381. the time of Jacob's trouble comes at the

  382. end of time, there'll be none like it in

  383. all of history.

  384. Everybody follow me there?

  385. For it shall come to pass in that day,

  386. says the Lord, that I'll break his yoke

  387. from off thy neck, and will burst thy

  388. bonds, and strangers shall no more

  389. enslave them. For they shall serve the

  390. Lord their God, and David their king,

  391. whom I'll raise up unto them." Now,

  392. whoa, here we go again. They're going to

  393. serve their God, and David their king.

  394. David has been dead for hundreds of

  395. years. It's not David the king. He's

  396. dead and in the grave. It's David's

  397. descendant, the Messiah.

  398. That's what this is all about.

  399. Nobody said, "What? How's David going to

  400. come back? David, their king, it's the

  401. Davidic Messiah that the prophets have

  402. all predicted whom I will raise up unto

  403. them." That's not physical resurrection

  404. of the dead. that there is talking about

  405. historical reser historical providential

  406. raising up in history.

  407. Therefore, fear not, oh my servant

  408. Jacob, says the Lord, neither be

  409. dismayed, oh Israel, for lo, I will save

  410. thee from afar and thy seed from the

  411. land of their captivity. Jacob shall

  412. return and be at rest and be quiet, and

  413. none shall make him afraid. That's the

  414. ultimate.

  415. Again, there's a near fulfillment and

  416. then a far fulfillment. This is not

  417. unusual in prophecy. And I'm with thee,

  418. says the Lord, to save thee, though I

  419. make a full end of all the nations which

  420. I've scattered thee, yet will I not make

  421. a full end of thee, but I'll correct

  422. thee in measure, and will not leave thee

  423. altogether unpunished.

  424. For thus says the Lord, thy bruise is

  425. incurable, thy womb is grievious.

  426. There's none to plead thy cause that you

  427. may be bound up. Thou hast no he healing

  428. medicines. All thy lovers, and that's

  429. talking about the leaders of all the

  430. nations around them, where they went for

  431. help instead of going to God, the

  432. Gentile nations, have forgotten thee.

  433. They seek thee not. For I've wounded

  434. thee with the wound of an enemy, with

  435. the chastisement of a cruel one, with

  436. the multitude of thine iniquity, because

  437. thy sins were increased. Why cryst thou

  438. over thy affliction? Thy sorrow is

  439. incurable for the multitude of thy

  440. iniquity. Because thy sins were

  441. increased, I've done these things unto

  442. thee. Therefore, all that devour thee

  443. shall be devoured, and all thine

  444. adversaries, every one of them shall go

  445. into captivity, and they that spoil thee

  446. shall be a spoil, and all that pray upon

  447. thee, well, I give to pray. In other

  448. words, all these Gentiles that are

  449. mistreating you, I'm going to deal with

  450. them, but I'm going to rescue you,

  451. and I'll restore health to thee, and

  452. I'll heal thee of thy womb, says the

  453. Lord, because they called thee an

  454. outcast, saying, This is Zion, whom no

  455. man seeks after. Thus says the Lord,

  456. behold, I will bring again the captivity

  457. of Jacob's tents and have mercy on his

  458. dwelling places, and the city, that's

  459. Jerusalem, shall be built upon its own

  460. heap, and the palace shall remain after

  461. its own manner. Jerusalem is going to be

  462. rebuilt. The palace is going to be

  463. rebuilt. The temple is going to be

  464. rebuilt. And out of them shall proceed

  465. thanksgiving, and the voice of those who

  466. make merry. and I'll multiply them and

  467. they'll not be few and I'll glorify them

  468. and they shall not be small. Their

  469. children also shall be as they were

  470. before. And their congregation shall be

  471. established before me. And I will punish

  472. all that oppress them. Their nobles

  473. shall be of themselves. Their governor

  474. shall proceed from the midst of them.

  475. And I will cause them to draw near, and

  476. he'll approach to me. For who is this

  477. that engaged his heart to approach to

  478. me, says the Lord, and you shall be my

  479. people, and I will be your God. Behold,

  480. the whirlwind

  481. of the Lord goes forth with fury, a

  482. continual whirlwind. It shall fall with

  483. pain on the head of the wicked. The

  484. fierce anger of the Lord shall not

  485. return until he's done it, until he's

  486. performed the intents of his heart.

  487. Underline this.

  488. Underline this

  489. in the latter days

  490. you'll consider.

  491. So there's going to be a near

  492. fulfillment 70 years from here

  493. and then there'll be an ultimate

  494. fulfillment yet to be done. So what's

  495. done on a minor scale was a major scale

  496. then but what's going to be done is will

  497. be done on a a worldwide scale at the

  498. end of history. Everybody following this

  499. it's a fascinating prophecy. It's so

  500. exact stunning. Now I I'm not going to

  501. read all of till 31 today. I'd like to

  502. but I want to read part of it to help

  503. you see how precious it is.

  504. Go down to 3131 and we'll get to this

  505. next week. I can't really teach you

  506. these chapters. It's just too long. You

  507. just kind of got to

  508. read through them and hit some

  509. highlights and move on.

  510. 31:31. Behold, the days come, says the

  511. Lord, that I will make a new covenant

  512. with the house of Israel and with the

  513. house of Judah. Who's that? 10 tribes in

  514. the north, two tribes in the south.

  515. What's it going to be? New covenant.

  516. What's it? Why is this so important?

  517. Because the whole first 29 chapters of

  518. the book showed they couldn't keep the

  519. old covenant.

  520. The old covenant was if you obey, I'll

  521. bless you.

  522. They couldn't get it done. The old

  523. covenant was made at Sinai with Moses in

  524. the Ten Commandments.

  525. That's the old covenant. Now he's going

  526. to make a new covenant.

  527. The old covenant will be replaced by a

  528. new covenant.

  529. And why do we call the New Testament the

  530. New Testament?

  531. Why do we say in communion this is the

  532. New Testament in my blood? It's this

  533. passage. Testament and covenant are

  534. talking about the same thing.

  535. Now, how do we get involved in it? Well,

  536. we'll explain that when we get down the

  537. road here,

  538. but that's a little that's a little

  539. farther down the road. Not according

  540. verse 32 to the covenant I made with

  541. their fathers in the day I took them by

  542. the hands of bring them out of the land

  543. of Egypt which my covenant they broke

  544. although I was a husband to them says

  545. the Lord but this shall be the covenant

  546. that I'll make with the house of Israel

  547. with the house of Israel. It doesn't say

  548. with the church it says with the house

  549. of Israel.

  550. After those days, says the Lord, I will

  551. put my law in their inward parts

  552. and write it in their hearts

  553. and will be their God, and they'll be my

  554. people. And they shall teach no more

  555. every man his neighbor, saying, "Know

  556. the Lord, for they'll all know me, from

  557. the least of them to the greatest of

  558. them, says the Lord. For I'll forgive

  559. their iniquity and I'll remember their

  560. sin no more. Who are we talking about?

  561. Israel, the Jewish people.

  562. Thus says the Lord who gives the sun for

  563. a light by day and the ordinances the

  564. moon and the stars for a night light by

  565. night. Who divides the sea when the his

  566. waves war the Lord of hosts his name. If

  567. those ordinances depart from before me,

  568. in other words, if the sun stops shining

  569. and stars start stop shining, then the

  570. seed of Israel shall also cease from

  571. being a nation before me forever, which

  572. means not going to happen. Right

  573. now, some people say they've already

  574. ceased being a nation. God's doing the

  575. church now. Well, that's this the stars

  576. are still shining

  577. and the moon's still shining.

  578. So, you know,

  579. the waves are still roaring. Thus says

  580. the Lord, if heaven above can be

  581. measured and the foundations of the

  582. earth searched out beneath, I will cast

  583. off all the seed of Israel for all that

  584. they have done, says the Lord. Behold,

  585. and that's another measurement. Who's

  586. found the end of the universe yet?

  587. Nobody. Who's gone to the end of outer

  588. space? Nobody.

  589. He says, if that can be done, I'll cast

  590. him off. But if you can't do it, then

  591. they're going to be around.

  592. Behold, the day, says the Lord, the city

  593. shall be built to the Lord from the

  594. tower of Hanel to the gate and the

  595. corner. Measuring line shall yet go

  596. forth over against it upon the hillb and

  597. shall compass about to go. The whole

  598. valley of the dead bodies and the ashes

  599. and all the fields under the brook of

  600. Kiddran, under the corner of the horse

  601. gate toward the east be holy unto the

  602. Lord. It shall not be plucked up nor

  603. thrown down anymore

  604. forever.

  605. This is talking about a future rescue of

  606. the Jewish people.

  607. Now, there's a near fulfillment when

  608. they came back from Babylon, and there's

  609. the future fulfillment. The near

  610. fulfillment is a down payment on the

  611. future fulfillment, which is the

  612. ultimate fulfillment.

  613. And the fact that God did the one is a

  614. clear indication he's going to do the

  615. other.

  616. And so God help us to just uh soak that

  617. in. Now you say, "Well, how do we get

  618. in? We're not Jews." I'll explain that

  619. next week.

  620. We get in because our I'll just say it.

  621. We get in this new covenant on the basis

  622. of our relationship to the ultimate Jew,

  623. Jesus Christ. So we get to enjoy it

  624. ahead of time.

  625. because of our relationship with him.

  626. Now,

  627. let's go back to Jeremiah in the little

  628. bit of time we have left,

  629. but let's remember that there's some

  630. tremendous stuff here.

  631. Comfort for those people, but there'll

  632. be tremendous comfort for the end time

  633. people as well.

  634. And God is the God of all comfort. And

  635. this is a fascinating thing. I am just

  636. going to read just for just bear with me

  637. on this different Bible teachers that I

  638. have in my library that have commented

  639. on this chapter. So you'll see there's a

  640. unonymity

  641. thinking on it.

  642. Kylin Dich, the German commentators uh

  643. on the Old Testament entitled this the

  644. announcement of the deliverance for all

  645. Israel.

  646. In view of the impending fall of the

  647. kingdom of Judah, Jeremiah seeks to

  648. present the godly with a strong anchor

  649. of hope in the realization of God's

  650. gracious promises which were be were to

  651. be fulfilled after the appointed season

  652. of punishment.

  653. uh was passed.

  654. Charles Fineberg, Jewish Christian of my

  655. youth. He was an old man when I was

  656. young. He trained John MacArthur, by the

  657. way. He in his commentary on Jeremiah

  658. calls this chapters 30 to 36

  659. to 33-26

  660. as the book of consolation.

  661. Derek Kitner who's a millennial but you

  662. it's it's amazing what he says in spite

  663. of that he says this is a book of hope

  664. part one chapter 30 1-31

  665. uh excuse me chapter 30 verses 1 to

  666. chapters 31 to 40 so as all else where

  667. in prophecy God had both an immediate

  668. and a distant prospect to unfold using

  669. the language which spoke to the

  670. prophet's generation in the first place,

  671. but which pointed by its very exuberance

  672. to a greater fulfillment on a dis

  673. different plane. Oh, that is great. Then

  674. he went all millennial on the rest. I'm

  675. not going to read that part, but uh but

  676. but well, I won't read it. A secret

  677. hidden for ages and generations to be

  678. revealed only when its time arrived and

  679. he puts it into the church, which I

  680. don't think it is that. But in the

  681. latter days, God says God to his people

  682. in this very prophecy, you will

  683. understand.

  684. You're a mill showing, Derek, but I love

  685. you anyway.

  686. I do like him. He's a wonderful company.

  687. And he says, "The subject is the great

  688. homegoing,

  689. and that is meant for Israel as well as

  690. Judah, the north as well as the south."

  691. Now, he said that. He's saying the very

  692. things I'm saying except for his all.

  693. RK Harrison said it's a message of

  694. consolation.

  695. Douglas Jones said it's prophecies of

  696. hope.

  697. John Grey Bill said it's a book of

  698. consolation.

  699. And so, you know, you just go on and on

  700. and on. The Bible teachers are saying

  701. the same thing. What's God doing? He's

  702. putting his arms of love around the

  703. nation that's in trouble. And he's

  704. consulting them

  705. with the future. Yes, it's going to be

  706. bad.

  707. There's there's hope coming. There's

  708. comfort coming.

  709. J. A. Thompson said it. It's the book of

  710. cons consol consolation.

  711. Chapters 30 to chapters 33. A

  712. significant collection of four chapters

  713. now begun.

  714. uh are

  715. half of them are poetical, half of them

  716. are pros. And he says the the collection

  717. has been called the book of consolation

  718. because it gives expression to the hopes

  719. of the future rather than the judgment

  720. which characterized earlier chapters. In

  721. the earlier parts of the book, there are

  722. some references to future hope and he

  723. quotes chapter 23 and 24 and 29 of

  724. Jeremiah. But the theme is here

  725. developed in some detail.

  726. And then he says this, hope was entrical

  727. to Jeremiah's preaching.

  728. I want to say something

  729. and I'm going to come back to this.

  730. Beware of the ministry that's all

  731. negative and no positive.

  732. There are ministries where all they're

  733. doing is criticizing other people. These

  734. people are wrong. Those people are

  735. wrong. This is sin. This is bad. Beware

  736. of that. We need the negative, right?

  737. Yes. This preaching needs to be

  738. negative. Jeremiah spent a lot of time

  739. being negative. Not because he was

  740. negative, but because God told him

  741. that's what he had to say.

  742. I don't like preaching on hell, but it

  743. when I get to it, I'll preach on it. If

  744. I can avoid it, I do. I don't like

  745. talking about judgment.

  746. I don't do that because Oh, I just love

  747. to watch people squirm.

  748. I just love to make people

  749. uncomfortable.

  750. No, we're supposed to comfort the

  751. afflicted and afflict the comfortable.

  752. And Amos said that. I don't know where

  753. he got it. Pretty good. That's what

  754. preaching is.

  755. Comfort the afflicted, afflict the

  756. comfortable.

  757. And all good preaching will do both. You

  758. can't just do one. I'm I'm going to be

  759. comfort everybody. No. Comfort the

  760. afflicted.

  761. Afflict comfort. If you're comfortable

  762. in your sin, you need to be made

  763. uncomfortable. If you're comfortable in

  764. your unbelief, disobedience, you need to

  765. be made uncomfortable.

  766. And if you're beat down with life

  767. because it's hard, even if you're

  768. reaping what you sowed

  769. and you're repenting and you see your

  770. life differently, you need to be

  771. comforted.

  772. You don't need to be made to feel worse.

  773. You need to be comforted.

  774. And so it's all important. All these

  775. things are so important. And so Jay

  776. Thompson said hope was integral to

  777. Jeremiah's preaching. And he said the

  778. high point of these chapters lies in

  779. chapter 31,31

  780. and 34.

  781. Then G. Campbell Morgan I got number

  782. nine and number 10. And then I'll get

  783. back and close. G. Campbell Morgan said

  784. of this section, "We now have come to

  785. four chapters, chapters 30, 31, and

  786. following, which stand out in striking

  787. contrast to the general tone of the

  788. book.

  789. We're not doing what we did before." You

  790. know, I think Jeremiah loved this. I

  791. mean, he God told him to be negative.

  792. God told him to be confronted with their

  793. idolatry. Now, he finally gets to be

  794. positive. I think he was loving it

  795. myself.

  796. And EW Hankenberg was a German Old

  797. Testament scholar. He calls it the

  798. triumph triumphal hymn of Israel's

  799. salvation.

  800. These were Morgan said they were these

  801. were dark days indeed. The army of

  802. Nebuchadnezzar was outside the city

  803. walls. It was in this hour and under

  804. these circumstances that the prophetic

  805. note rose to a high music of perfection

  806. and perfect countenance and buoyant

  807. hopefulness. Jacob's trouble is in me is

  808. the means for ensuring Jacob's triumph.

  809. I'm so glad somebody's dying. I can go

  810. in with a positive message.

  811. They're laying there knowing they're

  812. dying.

  813. Maybe they've been a sinner their whole

  814. life. Maybe they've rejected God their

  815. whole life.

  816. They don't have much time in this world.

  817. I'm glad I can come into that room with

  818. good news even for them.

  819. I'm glad I don't have to say too late

  820. for you, buddy. You've blown it your

  821. whole life. No last minute Louise. You

  822. know, I'm glad I can say the one that

  823. saved the thief on the cross can save

  824. you.

  825. But you have to repent and believe.

  826. That's exactly what the thief on the

  827. cross did beside Jesus. One of them.

  828. I'm glad I I I can't I don't have to say

  829. too late. Too late. Too bad. So sad.

  830. So,

  831. Philip Reichen, Presbyterian Philip Like

  832. Reken said, "Most of Jeremiah's

  833. messianic prophecies

  834. come in chapters 30-33."

  835. These chapters are filled with such hope

  836. and joy they are sometimes called the

  837. book of consolation or the book of

  838. comfort.

  839. They're the grand hymn

  840. They're the grand hymn of Israel's

  841. deliverance.

  842. I I hope you like the singing. If you

  843. don't like the singing, you're not going

  844. to enjoy heaven very much.

  845. A lot of singing going on. And that's

  846. not all that's going on. We got we got

  847. jobs to do. We got cities to reign over.

  848. We got uh you know, exploration. We got

  849. business. We got all that stuff. But

  850. there's going to be a whole lot of

  851. raising the Lord.

  852. And

  853. I hope you're looking forward to that.

  854. And you know something, we got something

  855. to sing about. We got something to thank

  856. God for.

  857. Why did I'm going where I don't deserve

  858. to ever be.

  859. And the marvelous thing, and Reichen

  860. says it, history shows that God saved

  861. his people Israel the way he promised.

  862. He promised they'd come back in 70

  863. years.

  864. And guess what he did? They came back.

  865. What do you think the book of Ezra and

  866. Nehemiah and all that's all about?

  867. You know what? That same God promises us

  868. things too in eternity. You think he's

  869. going to keep the lesser promise and not

  870. keep the greater one? The one the whole

  871. Bible's about.

  872. You see, this is a big issue. This is

  873. talking about God keeping his word.

  874. Whether it's judgment and chastisement

  875. and correction or encouragement and

  876. forgiveness,

  877. we all want to be part of something that

  878. lasts, don't we?

  879. Businesses don't always last. Jobs don't

  880. always last.

  881. Factories don't always last.

  882. Local churches don't always last.

  883. Families don't always last.

  884. Some go on longer than others. All of

  885. them have a purpose in the time that

  886. they are here.

  887. We all want to be a part of something

  888. that lasts that goes on and on and on.

  889. That's how we get our own

  890. feelings and sense of significance. I'm

  891. part of something bigger than myself. It

  892. goes on beyond me.

  893. Family, job, country, music, buildings.

  894. Uh well, we're talking about eternity

  895. here.

  896. And we have a chance of being in on that

  897. which is for eternity.

  898. And that's why it's so precious. Life is

  899. hard, then you die,

  900. then you're raised and reigned.

  901. No ministry should be exclusively

  902. negative. No ministry should be

  903. exclusively positive.

  904. A biblical ministry knows that demands

  905. both. Right?

  906. A biblical ministry demands both.

  907. You can't omit the negative because you

  908. don't like it. You can't emit the

  909. positive because you'd rather be

  910. negative.

  911. These are precious passages. And I know

  912. Jeremiah was enjoying this a lot more

  913. than preaching any of the others. I

  914. think he was really loving this to

  915. deliver this.

  916. Uh, you've heard the old carrot and

  917. stick. Well, that's what we got here.

  918. The stick is the correction. The carrot

  919. is the comfort.

  920. Healthy biblical balance. The whole

  921. council of God. And the timing was

  922. perfect. The Babylonians are at the

  923. door. And now they know that the false

  924. prophets were false and Jeremiah

  925. was genuine.

  926. Well, all of this is so very very

  927. helpful and beneficial.

  928. And what interests me so much is that I

  929. love this part of the Israel coming

  930. back. It's like there's 136 years

  931. difference between the Assyrian

  932. captivity and the Babylonian captivity.

  933. And so the northern kingdom was in

  934. captivity a lot longer than the southern

  935. captivity. And it'd be very easy for the

  936. people say, "Well, they're gone. They're

  937. done. The 10 tribes are over."

  938. Nobody's done for till God's done with

  939. them.

  940. And the captivities had their purposes.

  941. And according to Jeremiah, both will be

  942. back.

  943. And by the way, he says that in chapter

  944. 23:5.

  945. He says it again in chapters 31 verse

  946. 27-36.

  947. There both will be back.

  948. So um

  949. I hope this has been a little bit of a

  950. blessing to you tonight as we begin to

  951. look at this comfort section

  952. and I hope that you are glad that we

  953. have good news to give people.

  954. The good news is Jesus died for us and

  955. rose again.

  956. And we can afflict the uncomfortable and

  957. tell them, "You're a sinner. You need to

  958. be saved." But we can comfort the

  959. afflicted by saying, "No matter how bad

  960. it is, the blood of Jesus Christ

  961. cleanses from all sin." We can use

  962. Israel as an example. Uh uh God promised

  963. the permanence of this nation. He

  964. promised the reuniting of this nation.

  965. He promised their restoration from

  966. captivity. That did happen already in

  967. history on an initial fulfillment. It's

  968. still going to happen. And that's why

  969. there's still Jews in the world.

  970. Hitler, the Russians, nobody can stop

  971. it. And Jesus is going to reign. He's

  972. the king. There's a new covenant. And

  973. we're in on it. We're in on it already.

  974. And this latter day thing is very, very

  975. precious in this chapter. It's it's

  976. going to happen in the latter days. It's

  977. extremely extremely precious. It's it

  978. it's uh

  979. it's very clear, isn't it? In the last

  980. section, in the latter days, you'll

  981. consider it.

  982. If you come to that term latter days,

  983. I'm going to give you 17 times it

  984. appears in the Old Testament.

  985. No, I'm not going to do it. I'll just

  986. read the passages to you. I'll just read

  987. the verse numbers. Genesis 49:1, Numbers

    Genesis 49:1 Numbers 24:14

  988. 24:14,

  989. Deuteronomy 4:30, Deuteronomy 21:29,

    Deuteronomy 4:30

  990. Isaiah 2:2, Jeremiah 23:20, Jeremiah

    Isaiah 2:2 Jeremiah 23:20 Jeremiah 30:24

  991. 30:24, the last verse of this chapter,

  992. Jeremiah 48:47,

    Jeremiah 48:47

  993. Jeremiah 49:39,

    Jeremiah 49:39

  994. Ezekiel 38,

  995. and Ezekiel 38:16,

    Ezekiel 38:16

  996. Daniel 2:28, Daniel 10:14, Hosea 3:5,

    Daniel 2:28 Daniel 10:14 Hosea 3:5

  997. and Micah 4:1.

    Micah 4:1

  998. Now, some of those you, "Oh, yeah, I

  999. know what that one is." A lot of those

1000. you say, "I don't know what that." Well,

  1001. it's a terminology

1002. of the days that are going to come after

1003. judgment has passed. Uh, so what your

1004. appetite for that to think about the

1005. days to come. Those are esqueological

1006. times and some of that has been

1007. fulfilled initially. All of it will be

  1008. fulfilled completely.

  1009. One last thing.

1010. The Jews that went into captivity had to

1011. face a lifetime of being where they

  1012. didn't want to be.

  1013. 70 years is a lifetime. It's the normal

  1014. lifetime, right?

1015. according to Psalm 90, three score and

  1016. 10. And if it's four score, it's labor

1017. and sorrow. So it's kind of like the

  1018. normal lifetime.

1019. And uh so what he's saying is what these

1020. people were hearing, I'm not coming

  1021. back.

  1022. I'll never see

  1023. my country again,

1024. my part of the promised land again. I'll

  1025. never see Jerusalem again.

1026. I'm going to be there the rest of my

1027. life. I'm going to die. That's what they

  1028. were hearing.

1029. 70 years. Isn't that what you would

  1030. hear?

  1031. I mean, unless you're 10 years old, you

1032. say, "I might I might be able to survive

  1033. 70 years."

1034. You know, that's what they were hearing.

1035. 70 years was a lifetime. That was a life

1036. sentence for those that had all that

1037. idolatry and wickedness. But your

  1038. children will come back.

1039. And at the end of history, everybody's

1040. coming back that knows the Lord. He's

1041. going to turn the cap cap captivity.

1042. There's going to be a new covenant. And

1043. God's going to do a new work for Israel.

1044. And he hasn't forgotten his people. And

1045. all of it means is there's a life after

  1046. this life.

1047. So if my troubles go the rest of my

  1048. life,

1049. it's not a total disaster because there

1050. is another life. There is life after

  1051. life.

1052. You ever put it that way? We talk about

1053. life after death. There there's life

1054. after life. There's life in this world,

1055. but you might have some trouble that

1056. you're going to have the rest of your

  1057. life.

1058. I'm never going to get rid of this. I'm

  1059. going to be

1060. for the rest of my life. I got this

1061. physical ailment or I have this

1062. financial situation or I have this

1063. family situation the rest of my life. Uh

1064. but God is saying sooner or later it's

  1065. going to stop

1066. and there is a life after life

1067. and this is a this this is giving

1068. wonderful hints to it giving wonderful

1069. precious things to by the way the

1070. talment mentions that David their king

1071. that they're going to worship in the

1072. future that the Messiah will be revealed

1073. to them out of their own midst.

1074. So even the rabbis knew that when he was

1075. talking about David, when Jeremiah is

1076. talking about David, he's not talking

1077. about the David that lived before him

1078. hundreds of years before him. He's

1079. talking about the promised king after

  1080. him.

  1081. Okay, let's have a word of prayer. We'll

  1082. get

1083. close out. Father, thank you for the

  1084. time that

1085. we can uh be here tonight.

1086. bless this word to our lives.

  1087. Encourage us to persevere

1088. in the faith and in the labors that you

1089. want us to do in the place you want us

1090. to be with the life that we have left in

  1091. this world. Knowing that you're a

1092. covenant God that doesn't forget his

1093. promises. And if you didn't forget it to

1094. if you didn't if you won't forget them

1095. for the Jewish people, you won't forget

1096. your promises to us either.

  1097. You're faithful even when we aren't.

1098. You are true even when we're false and

1099. fail. You will succeed when we fail.

1100. And he that's begun a good work in us

1101. will continue to perform it to the day

1102. of Christ Jesus. in Jesus name we pray.

  1103. Amen.

  1104. >> Amen.

  1105. >> Thank you.

1106. Lord, as we go from this place

  1107. loving you more,

  1108. trusting you more.

1109. May the power of your love and the light

1110. of your word shine well to a sin

1111. darkened world as we go from this place.
