  1. Uh

  2. I'm the one-man band now as camp is in

  3. business.

  4. And so Mike is gone.

  5. And we are doing great text in the

  6. Bible.

  7. And I'm going around the barn a lot

  8. today.

  9. I think I have to.

  10. But I want you to turn to the book of

  11. Job.

  12. Look at at Job.

  13. Now, if you are with us or you're new to

  14. Bible study,

  15. you might think this book is the book of

  16. Job.

  17. In English we say job,

  18. but his name is Job.

  19. And it's a marvelous book. It's really

  20. different.

  21. It's really really different.

  22. And I love teaching this book.

  23. And the text I'm interested in is at the

  24. end of the book.

  25. But for newcomers here, I'm not going to

  26. ask you to raise your hand, but I know

  27. there's some people

  28. you don't know this book at all. You're

  29. totally ignorant of it.

  30. Totally ignorant of it.

  31. And so Job was a man that lived

  32. approximately 4,000 years ago.

  33. It goes way back.

  34. He lived in the land of Uz.

  35. Not the land of Oz, the land of Uz.

  36. And he was contemporary with some of the

  37. patriarchs as far as we can tell.

  38. So this book goes back.

  39. He was an extremely wealthy man.

  40. Nobody had as much money as him in that

  41. part of the world.

  42. He had plenty

  43. of stuff.

  44. He was a plenty He was extremely fertile

  45. man.

  46. He had seven sons and three daughters.

  47. 10.

  48. So, Job was someone

  49. that

  50. was uh

  51. very fertile and had the blessing of

  52. many children.

  53. He was very successful in business.

  54. And I want you to uh look at

  55. uh the first verses of this just so that

  56. you have some sense of this man and who

  57. he is.

  58. In the land of Uz, 1:1,

  59. there lived a man whose name was Job.

  60. This man,

  61. the first thing God says of him,

  62. "This man was blameless and upright. He

  63. feared God and shunned evil." Before he

  64. says anything else about him, about his

  65. family, about his wealth, about

  66. anything, he feared God and shunned

  67. evil. Men, he was reverent towards God.

  68. Not that he was scared of God. He was

  69. reverent towards God. And he shunned

  70. evil. He He wanted to do the right

  71. thing. There was nobody that strict on

  72. themselves or that serious about life

  73. like him.

  74. God'll point him out

  75. to the devil.

  76. The devil said, God says that Satan,

  77. "Where you been?" "I've been walking up

  78. and down the earth and and

  79. like like I own everybody down there."

  80. And God said, "Have you considered my

  81. servant Job,

  82. a man who fears God and eschews evil?

  83. There's none like him.

  84. And uh

  85. he's a man that was blameless and

  86. upright. He feared God and shunned evil.

  87. And in verse two, he had seven sons and

  88. three daughters. And these were

  89. apparently grown sons and grown

  90. daughters.

  91. And he owned He was extremely wealthy

  92. man.

  93. He owned 7,000 sheep.

  94. How many people do you know that own

  95. 7,000 sheep?

  96. Think about that.

  97. 3,000 camels.

  98. What do you mean so many camels? Those

  99. were the semi-trucks of the day.

  100. To haul your stuff to other countries

  101. and other places.

  102. He had 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500

  103. yoke of oxen.

  104. That's to plow the fields and do that

  105. kind of work, heavy work, and 500

  106. donkeys.

  107. 500 donkeys, how do you feed that many

  108. animals?

  109. You better have deep pockets, right?

  110. Now, you don't have those kind of

  111. animals unless you need them.

  112. Who Who's going to support

  113. 500 yoke of oxen or 500 donkeys or 3,000

  114. 3,000 camels? Those Those are Those are

  115. meant for work.

  116. So, Job had a working business. He was

  117. transporting stuff everywhere.

  118. He was a big businessman

  119. of 4,000 years ago.

  120. He had a

  121. a large number of servants.

  122. Take a lot of people to take care of all

  123. those animals.

  124. Most of us would have trouble take I've

  125. talked to somebody the other day

  126. taking care of one horse.

  127. I mean, they're expensive.

  128. Horses are expensive. They eat.

  129. So, you got to have time and money to

  130. have a one horse, let alone all this.

  131. And he was the greatest man among all

  132. the people of the East. So, this guy was

  133. uh

  134. their equivalent of a multi-millionaire,

  135. a

  136. of that day.

  137. His sons used to take turns holding

  138. feasts in their homes.

  139. So, the family was tight.

  140. There were no prodigal sons in this

  141. in this home. He's a godly man, raised

  142. godly kids.

  143. And they would take turn in their homes,

  144. and they would invite their three

  145. sisters and eat and drink with them.

  146. When a period of feasting had run its

  147. course, Job would send and have them

  148. purify.

  149. Early in the morning, he would offer a

  150. burnt sacrifice, a sacrifice, a burnt

  151. offering for each of them. Each of them.

  152. 10 kids.

  153. Thinking, perhaps my children have

  154. sinned

  155. and cursed God in their hearts. Not with

  156. their lips,

  157. just inside.

  158. This

  159. was Job's regular custom. I'm reading

  160. from the NIV. I pulled the wrong Bible

  161. up for our morning message, but I'm it's

  162. the same thing.

  163. Now, the very thing he feared for his

  164. children,

  165. Satan was trying to get him to do.

  166. Curse God

  167. and die.

  168. Think about that.

  169. And it's quite fascinating cuz there's a

  170. conference in the heavens.

  171. And the angels apparently have to report

  172. to God, and Satan's a fallen angel, but

  173. even has to report.

  174. And uh God says in verse 8, "Have you

  175. considered my servant Job? There's no

  176. one on earth like him."

  177. He's blameless and upright, a man who

  178. fears God and shuns evil.

  179. Now, who brought up Job to Satan?

  180. God did.

  181. And Satan said, "Does Job

  182. fear God for nothing?"

  183. He replied, "Have you not put a hedge

  184. around him and his household and

  185. everything he has? You blessed the work

  186. of his hands so that his flocks and

  187. herds are spread throughout the land.

  188. Stretch your hand and strike everything

  189. he's got and he'll curse you to your

  190. face. You pay him well. He's just in it

  191. for the money."

  192. You pay him well.

  193. And God said, "This is the behind the

  194. scenes invisible things that we don't

  195. see."

  196. Part

  197. The Lord said, "Very well.

  198. Then, everything he has is in your

  199. hands, but on the man himself, do not

  200. lay a finger."

  201. So, what did the Satan do?

  202. He stirred up some other people from

  203. other places to steal his stuff, burn

  204. down the houses, to kill everybody,

  205. lightning coming down, everything that's

  206. gone. Job lost everything.

  207. He lost 10 kids.

  208. He lost all his camels, all his donkeys.

  209. He lost everything. He had nothing.

  210. Satan took everything.

  211. Why did he do that?

  212. To make him curse God.

  213. Satan said, "If I hit him hard enough,

  214. he'll curse God."

  215. Maybe

  216. you've lost something in your life

  217. that's been taken away.

  218. It could be someone you love.

  219. It might be

  220. something you like.

  221. It might be financial. It might be

  222. whatever.

  223. This is a unveiling of the spiritual

  224. war.

  225. And the very thing Job feared his

  226. children would do, Satan was trying to

  227. get him to do.

  228. Now, by the way, Satan will get the

  229. parents through their children.

  230. So, discourage with my kids

  231. in their prodigal ways.

  232. He will do that.

  233. But in this case, he just killed him.

  234. To get to Job. That's the beginning of

  235. this book.

  236. And

  237. Job Job sat on the ash heap and later

  238. Satan says to God, well,

  239. Job said,

  240. You see, you hit him as hard as you

  241. could, devil, and you he didn't do

  242. anything. He said, you didn't let me

  243. touch him. Let me touch him and then

  244. he'll curse you to your face. All right,

  245. you got permission now.

  246. Satan can't do anything without

  247. permission.

  248. Doesn't mean God approves of it. It

  249. means he gives permission

  250. for things to run their course.

  251. And so,

  252. God took away Job's health.

  253. He's sitting on an ash heap, boils all

  254. over him.

  255. After all that happened.

  256. God said, you can touch him, but you

  257. can't take his life. You can't kill him.

  258. Satan would have killed him if he could,

  259. but God wouldn't let him.

  260. And that's when his friends show up,

  261. right?

  262. The three friends to comfort him. They

  263. come from all directions.

  264. And then the discussion started.

  265. And that's the book of Job.

  266. Part of it.

  267. Now,

  268. >> [laughter]

  269. >> there are so many precious truths in

  270. this book, as hard as it is.

  271. And I want you to think about Job and

  272. what we can learn from him. He excelled

  273. in piety.

  274. There was none like him in the earth.

  275. He feared God and eschewed evil.

  276. And God knew the kind of man he was. He

  277. knew he could take it.

  278. Samson excelled excelled in fighting,

  279. killing Philistines. The Benjaminites

  280. excelled in slings, the left-handed

  281. Benjamites. Jonathan excelled in

  282. loyalty. Solomon excelled in wisdom.

  283. Jacob excelled in fertility.

  284. Jud- Judas excelled in treachery. Satan

  285. excels in duplicity.

  286. Nabal excelled in stupidity. Methuselah

  287. excelled in longevity. But Job excelled

  288. in piety.

  289. There was none like him

  290. in the earth.

  291. And Job's friends came to comfort him.

  292. Why did all this happen to this guy

  293. that's so good?

  294. And when it was all over, Job said,

  295. "Miserable comforters are you all. You

  296. just hurt me more

  297. than you've helped me."

  298. They were unwilling agents of Satan

  299. trying to comfort him.

  300. These men were intelligent, eloquent,

  301. passionate,

  302. and wrong.

  303. What was wrong?

  304. Their theology.

  305. Deficient theology is dangerous.

  306. There's people all over America

  307. going to hospitals and hurting people,

  308. going into sick rooms and hurting

  309. people, going to the funeral room and

  310. hurting people cuz their theology is

  311. deficient. And they mean well and they

  312. destroy wonderfully.

  313. You need to know the Bible.

  314. We need to know God's word. We need to

  315. know it well.

  316. We expect our doctors to know what

  317. they're talking about. If we go to a

  318. heart doctor or cancer doctor, we expect

  319. them to be well-informed.

  320. We expect our accountants to be

  321. well-informed cuz we don't know all the

  322. new laws on all that stuff.

  323. We expect other people to know their

  324. business and help us.

  325. Our business is getting the gospel out.

  326. Our business is ministering to people.

  327. It's the greatest thing that anybody

  328. could do in life, and we need to get

  329. better at it. We need to be good at it

  330. cuz we can hurt people. We can hurt

  331. people while we when we're trying to

  332. help them.

  333. And so these three

  334. were eloquent, intelligent,

  335. passionate,

  336. and wrong.

  337. Job felt their reasoning was worthless.

  338. And hurtful. Miserable comforters of you

  339. are you all.

  340. And so there's these old men talking

  341. about life. They're talking about the

  342. troubles.

  343. Four old men, and there's a fifth guy

  344. who's a little younger. They're sitting

  345. around talking. That's the book of Job.

  346. No battles,

  347. no no travels, just

  348. bunch of people talking.

  349. But what they're talking about is

  350. extremely important.

  351. But at the but at the end of it,

  352. these comforters say say say little of

  353. value.

  354. The book of Jude talks about false

  355. teachers. They're clouds without rain.

  356. That's the expression.

  357. False teachers are clouds without rain.

  358. When you see a cloud, you expect rain.

  359. Possibility of rain. And the book of

  360. Jude calls these false teachers clouds

  361. without rain.

  362. And one Indian, American Indian, uh was

  363. asked about the uh

  364. the message he just heard from this

  365. false teacher.

  366. And this guy was very passionately uh

  367. giving out of a sermon. And the Indian

  368. said, uh lot of lightning, a lot of

  369. thunder, no rain.

  370. I love

  371. There's no help but this guy's not

  372. helping anybody.

  373. What a waste of time listening to him.

  374. Thunder, lightning, no rain.

  375. And

  376. Satan was coming at Job hard.

  377. The only limitation Satan uh did was

  378. what God put on him.

  379. You can take all he's got but not his

  380. life. You can take

  381. uh you can touch his health but not his

  382. life.

  383. And so Satan went as far as God

  384. let him go.

  385. Except he spared Job's wife.

  386. He could have killed her.

  387. You know, there was armies of people

  388. coming in killing people, all this stuff

  389. happened.

  390. Um

  391. he could have killed her.

  392. He could have killed the one servant

  393. that escaped from each of these attacks

  394. and told Job in succession. He left one.

  395. So that and just pile it so chain as so

  396. Job would get one bad news after

  397. another, one bad news after another.

  398. Boom, boom, boom, boom. And he left the

  399. wife for the same reason. When she got

  400. so discouraged, she said, "Job, why

  401. don't you just curse God and die?"

  402. This And Job's answer was,

  403. "You're talking like one of the foolish

  404. women."

  405. "Shall we receive good at the hand of

  406. God and not evil?

  407. Life's full of Evil means calamity as

  408. well as good. Mrs. Job, I've never heard

  409. you talk like that, ever.

  410. It was Satan using her.

  411. Now, don't remember she went through all

  412. this, too. She just lost all this. And

  413. she was in despair, and Satan used her.

  414. To get at Job.

  415. But it didn't work.

  416. All of his efforts were to drive Job to

  417. apostasy.

  418. And uh

  419. to give up.

  420. Taking away this, taking away that,

  421. taking away something else.

  422. Now, some of the most important books of

  423. the Bible

  424. are seriously neglected,

  425. overlooked,

  426. or avoided

  427. because they're particularly difficult

  428. to understand,

  429. teach, and apply,

  430. and hard to apply because you have to

  431. attain a certain level of understanding

  432. to accurately apply it.

  433. I would say a majority of churches

  434. neglect this book.

  435. Majority of pastors don't preach on it.

  436. They might preach on one person.

  437. They don't go verse by verse through the

  438. book.

  439. I think I'm probably right on that.

  440. There's There's exceptions to that rule.

  441. I In my years at Athens Bible Church, I

  442. have preached through the book of Job

  443. twice at least, maybe three times. My

  444. memory is I mean, verse by verse. Some

  445. of you've been there for at least two of

  446. them, and I think there was an earlier

  447. one, but

  448. memory gets

  449. foggy.

  450. And another time we preached through it,

  451. and we just focused on Job, and we

  452. skipped the friends arguments and just

  453. res- with Job and what was going on Job.

  454. And other times we did it another way

  455. and a different way.

  456. So we've tried to spend some time in

  457. Job.

  458. The hardest part of the book is the

  459. erroneous arguments of Job's friends and

  460. the amount of of

  461. the book is that.

  462. There's

  463. the erroneous argument of Eliphaz the

  464. Temanite that's two chapters that's 48

  465. verses.

  466. So if you're teaching through the book

  467. you got to go through two chapters of

  468. erroneous argument.

  469. That's really enjoyable on a Sunday

  470. morning. I'm going to tell you

  471. everything I'm going to tell you this

  472. morning is wrong.

  473. See how hard that is to teach?

  474. They're all this has to be corrected.

  475. So Eliphaz's argument was theologically

  476. deficient and pronounced so by God at

  477. the end of the book. You haven't spoken

  478. the things that are right like Job has.

  479. Now

  480. when you teach something like that you

  481. got to say stay with me you got it.

  482. Well here the erroneous one this this

  483. morning and then we hear Job's answer

  484. the next day and then we're going to go

  485. back to the next guy and we get another

  486. erroneous argument and then we'll be

  487. back to Job and then we'll jump to the

  488. third one.

  489. So by the time we get through Bildad and

  490. Zophar Bildad takes up 22 verses

  491. Zophar 20 verses all of it's incorrect

  492. theology.

  493. Some of it's good but it's wrongly

  494. applied.

  495. So things that are wrongly applied are

  496. not really helpful.

  497. And it goes over again and over again

  498. and over again and

  499. the arguments go back and forth and it's

  500. like

  501. I don't know how much of this I can

  502. take.

  503. How many have read the book of Job at

  504. one sitting?

  505. That's an assignment.

  506. I would challenge you to do that.

  507. It's going to take you a while.

  508. But remember, Job's saying what's right,

  509. but he's doing it in a wrong way.

  510. He He He He's got the right argument,

  511. but he's not arguing it very well. He's

  512. got the right position, but he's not

  513. arguing it well. They've got a wrong

  514. They're three friends have wrong

  515. positions, but they're arguing it very

  516. well.

  517. They're very eloquent. They're very

  518. astute.

  519. It makes it very difficult.

  520. And at the end And we get to the end,

  521. there's a young man there, his name is

  522. Elihu, and he says, "I've heard enough.

  523. All you old guys are wrong. You don't

  524. know what you're talking about.

  525. You're all wrong.

  526. I might be young and you're old, but

  527. you're full of wind."

  528. And then you get chapters 32, 33, 34,

  529. 35, and 36 about at 37 about Elihu

  530. telling them they're all wrong.

  531. So, it's hard. This is not easy.

  532. It's hard to be positive when you're

  533. teaching this book.

  534. And then at the end of the book, God

  535. corrects them all.

  536. And he says to his friends, "You better

  537. I'm going to have Job pray for you

  538. because you're in trouble with me

  539. because you haven't spoken the things

  540. right about me as Job has.

  541. He's arguing it poorly. He's been upset,

  542. but at least he's got the right

  543. position. You guys have the wrong

  544. position, and you think you're right and

  545. you're very self-righteous.

  546. And he's right, you're miserable

  547. comforters. You don't know what you're

  548. doing.

  549. All four of you are out of it.

  550. And so,

  551. he says, "Job's answers are better than

  552. his critical friends' arguments, but Job

  553. himself says things that are not stellar

  554. or profound, and they're difficult. God

  555. corrects them all at the end of the

  556. book, and Job says,

  557. "I was talking about how I had I

  558. shouldn't have been talking about. I was

  559. way over my head. I shouldn't have been

  560. saying it." Job repents of what he said.

  561. But God approved of it in comparison

  562. with the other guys.

  563. And Job does say some really, really

  564. good things and precious things.

  565. You know what? It takes a very, very

  566. mature local church, a very, very

  567. serious Christian,

  568. to sit through a sermon series on the

  569. book of Job.

  570. Some of you have.

  571. And

  572. remember, Paul said we're to teach the

  573. whole counsel of God. That's what he

  574. did.

  575. And one way to do that is to do book

  576. study.

  577. He said, "Pastor, I don't think I could

  578. take 42 chapters."

  579. Well, if I live long enough, you're

  580. going to have to try.

  581. So, I'll be at it again.

  582. You

  583. you folks remember in the 1950s the way

  584. your mothers acted?

  585. They made you eat things like broccoli,

  586. cauliflower, and asparagus.

  587. Maybe they just put a little bit on the

  588. plate.

  589. You got it you got to try.

  590. Anybody else's mom acted that way? That

  591. was my mom.

  592. Now, the 50s moms weren't perfect.

  593. Some of us ate Spam in the 50s. I can't

  594. believe we ate that and survived.

  595. And uh

  596. I had goose liver or sandwiches to go to

  597. school with many times.

  598. And that's not the best thing.

  599. There's a

  600. there's a more popular name for them,

  601. that better name for them.

  602. So, we didn't always have the best diet

  603. sometimes.

  604. But, moms were smart.

  605. You'll never like it if you don't try

  606. it. And even if you don't like it now,

  607. you'll grow to like it. You got to You

  608. got to sit there and eat

  609. little bit of broccoli and that little

  610. bit of cauliflower and that little bit

  611. of asparagus.

  612. Clean your plate before you leave the

  613. table. That's what people who lived in

  614. the through the Great Depression did.

  615. Now, of course, we listened too well.

  616. So, all of us have become fat of my

  617. generation. We got used to eating

  618. everything that we could eat.

  619. But, there were good sides of it.

  620. In 2 Timothy 3:15 and 16, all scripture

    2 Timothy 3:15

  621. is given by inspiration of God and is

  622. what?

  623. Profitable.

  624. I don't like that part.

  625. Eat it anyway.

  626. Go through Lamentations.

  627. You got to go through Lamentations. I've

  628. only preached through that once. That's

  629. hard preaching.

  630. Acrostic.

  631. But, it's excellent.

  632. You know, eat the hard parts.

  633. Ecclesiastes not not easy. You better

  634. chew a lot when you're feeding on

  635. [clears throat] that book.

  636. And Paul told the Corinthians, "You're a

  637. bunch of babies. You're going to feed

  638. you with milk or not solid food. What's

  639. wrong with you people over there?"

  640. Christians are expected to eat

  641. an adult diet.

  642. Grow up.

  643. And there is a desiring the pure milk of

  644. the word that you might grow. 1 Peter 2

  645. talks about that. But, there is also a

  646. when there's a time for you to be

  647. teachers, you've got need to I teach you

  648. again.

  649. You're living on baby food. That's what

  650. Hebrews 4:7 to 14 says. Grow up.

    Hebrews 4:7–14

  651. So,

  652. we need to learn to feed ourselves as

  653. well as to be fed, but we need to know

  654. to tackle some books of the Bible a

  655. little harder.

  656. And Ecclesiastes and Job and Ezekiel and

  657. even Jeremiah to a point that we're

  658. looking at.

  659. I love Isaiah. It's one of the best

  660. books in the Old Testament. Just

  661. but it's so long, 66 chapters.

  662. And uh

  663. So, may the Lord help us as we think

  664. through this.

  665. And there are some such precious

  666. precious things in this book.

  667. There's a little book that I bought

  668. years ago.

  669. And it was written by G. Campbell

  670. Morgan. Some of you will name it cuz

  671. you've heard me quote it.

  672. The answers

  673. of Jesus

  674. to Job.

  675. And it deals with how many of the issues

  676. that Job had

  677. and problems that he had are answered by

  678. the coming of Jesus and the work of

  679. Jesus on the cross.

  680. It's a great book. It's just a little

  681. book. I don't know if you can even find

  682. it now. I've given so many of them away.

  683. I'm not even sure it's still in my

  684. library, but it's a tremendous book.

  685. And he hits some of the highlights of

  686. the book of Job.

  687. That's a good place to start.

  688. Job is an acquired taste.

  689. I used to hate sauerkraut. Now I eat it.

  690. I used to hate yogurt, now I eat it.

  691. There's some kind of ethnic foods you

  692. may not like and maybe still don't like,

  693. but the book of Jew chewed is something

  694. we all need.

  695. Now, open your Bible and let's look at

  696. some things

  697. real quick.

  698. We're going to get to that passage in a

  699. moment.

  700. Open the book of Job

  701. and let's just run through it

  702. and think about some things.

  703. Some things about Job.

  704. Let's start there.

  705. Job was a man of unusual piety.

  706. That's Job 1:1, 1:8

    Job 1:1

  707. and 1:5. There was none like him in the

  708. earth.

  709. A man of unusual piety.

  710. Number one, Job was a man of unusual

  711. pain.

  712. He went one-on-one with Satan.

  713. And he won,

  714. but he came out pretty battered.

  715. Job 1:20 to 22.

    Job 1:20–22

  716. Three, Job was a man of unusual

  717. prosperity.

  718. That's chapter 1 verse 3.

  719. Job was a man

  720. who

  721. had unusual power in prayer.

  722. Job prayed for his friends.

  723. God told his friends, "You haven't

  724. spoken the things right about me. You

  725. We're going to have Job pray for you,

  726. or I'm going to deal with you."

  727. Job 42:7-9.

    Job 42:7–9

  728. And Job in Ezekiel 14:14 is put up there

    Ezekiel 14:14

  729. with other great people of prayer. Do

  730. you know that verse? Turn to Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 14:14

  731. 14:14.

  732. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel

  733. and we find the prophet Ezekiel

  734. is mentioned. And God says in Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 14:14

  735. 14:14, "Though these three men, Noah,

  736. Daniel, and Job were in it, they should

  737. deliver their own souls by their

  738. righteousness," says the Lord. He puts

  739. Job right up there with Daniel and Noah.

  740. As great prayer warriors and godly

  741. people.

  742. God himself does that

  743. to the prophet Ezekiel.

  744. Job was a man

  745. who had power in prayer like Daniel.

  746. He was a He was He was a prayer warrior.

  747. Job was a man who excelled in

  748. perseverance.

  749. Now, we're going to go

  750. to the New Testament and the book of

  751. James and this is getting close

  752. to what I want to deal with today. James

    James 5:9

  753. chapter 5

  754. verse 9.

  755. I I personally speculate that James read

  756. the book of Job before he wrote the book

  757. of James.

  758. How else would he say

  759. "Rejoice when you're falling into

  760. manifold trials"?

  761. How else would he say

  762. what he said about the tongue in chapter

  763. 3?

  764. But when he gets to chapter 5

  765. he says this. He writes this.

  766. Verse 11.

  767. This is getting close to where I want to

  768. be.

  769. "Behold, we count them happy who endure.

  770. You've heard of the patience of Job."

  771. The patience of Job deals with his

  772. endurance.

  773. The endurance of Job

  774. and have seen the end of the Lord that

  775. the Lord is very pitiful and of tender

  776. mercies.

  777. James is writing Jewish congregations of

  778. Christians

  779. that are scattered from him

  780. and he knows that they're familiar with

  781. the book of Job and very familiar with

  782. it.

  783. So, he brings it up.

  784. And so, he says in verse

  785. 10, "Take, my brethren, the prophets who

  786. spoken in the name of the Lord for an

  787. example of suffering, affliction, and

  788. patience."

  789. So, the Old Testament writers not only

  790. had things to say, they had a lifestyle

  791. to

  792. follow.

  793. "Behold, we count them happy who endure,

  794. who remain under.

  795. You've heard of the endurance of Job and

  796. have seen the end of the Lord that the

  797. Lord's very pitiful and of tender

  798. mercies."

  799. Your life may be in a really hard place.

  800. I'll guarantee it won't stay there.

  801. It might get worse before it gets

  802. better.

  803. But when we see Jesus, the hymn writer

  804. said, "It'll be worth it all

  805. when we see Jesus.

  806. It'll be worth it all

  807. when we see Christ."

  808. And so, it's very important to get a

  809. perspective

  810. on our problems.

  811. Number six, Job was a man who

  812. experienced un- usual

  813. unusual provision by God.

  814. You got to know the latter end of Job.

  815. Now, if you go to chapter 1 of Job and

  816. then you go to the last chapter,

  817. I think most of you know this,

  818. when it was all over,

  819. turn with me to Job 42.

  820. Job 42.

  821. Verse one. Job answered the Lord and

  822. said, "I know that you can do everything

  823. and no thought can be withheld you. Who

  824. is he that

  825. hides counsel without knowledge?

  826. Therefore, I've uttered that which I

  827. understood not. Even I haven't said the

  828. right thing about you, Lord. Things too

  829. wonderful for me, that which I knew not.

  830. Here I beseech thee. I'll speak. I'll

  831. demand of thee, and declare to me I've

  832. heard of thee by the hearing of the ear,

  833. but now my eyes sees thee. Wherefore, I

  834. abhor myself and repent in dust and

  835. ashes." Job repents.

  836. Comparatively, he was better than the

  837. others, but Job repents. I I didn't see

  838. you the way I should.

  839. And we're all going to think that way

  840. when we see Jesus.

  841. And it was that after the Lord had

  842. spoken these words to Job, the Lord said

  843. to Eliphaz the Temanite, "My wrath is

  844. kindled against thee and against your

  845. two friends, for you've not spoken to me

  846. the thing that is right as my servant

  847. Job has." Job didn't say everything

  848. right, but he said, in comparatively

  849. speaking, he did.

  850. Therefore, take to you now seven

  851. bullocks and seven rams. Go to my

  852. servant Job and offer up for yourselves

  853. a burn offering, and my servant Job will

  854. pray for you, for him will I accept,

  855. lest I deal with you after your folly,

  856. in that you've not spoken to me the

  857. thing which is right

  858. like my servant Job.

  859. Does God care what our theology is? Yes.

  860. Does God care that we interpret him, his

  861. word, and his providence correctly? Yes.

  862. So, Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the

  863. Shuhite

  864. Someone said he's the shortest guy in

  865. the Bible, the Shuhite.

  866. Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the

  867. Naamathite went and did according as Job

  868. the Lord commanded them, and the Lord

  869. accepted Job.

  870. So, Job prayed for these guys that hurt

  871. him.

  872. Are we praying willing to pray for

  873. people that have really hurt us? Kicked

  874. us when we're down?

  875. Or maybe hurt us

  876. and didn't mean to?

  877. They meant well,

  878. but they did more harm than good.

  879. Verse 10, "The Lord turned the captivity

  880. of Job when he prayed for his friends."

  881. Those guys needed prayer.

  882. They needed Job's prayer.

  883. And their need was exposed when they

  884. were trying to comfort him.

  885. And the Lord gave Job twice as much as

  886. he had before.

  887. Now, just think about that and watch the

  888. numbers here.

  889. He got twice as much.

  890. Why did God let Job go through that? Why

  891. did God bring Job up? Why did God have

  892. to point the devil to the devil Job?

  893. Got Job in trouble? Pointing him out to

  894. the devil? Caused Job God wanted to

  895. mature Job so he could give Job more.

  896. He already had more than anybody else,

  897. and God wanted to give him more, but he

  898. couldn't couldn't take the more unless

  899. he was mature.

  900. And so, in verse 11, "There came to him

  901. all his brethren and his sisters. Where

  902. were they at?

  903. They were conspicuous for their absence

  904. before, then came to him all his

  905. brethren and his all his sisters, and

  906. all that they had been of his

  907. acquaintances. Now everybody's pouring

  908. in before and did eat bread with him in

  909. his house, and they bemoaned him and

  910. comforted him over all the evil, that

  911. means calamity, that the Lord had

  912. brought on him. Every man also gave him

  913. a piece of money and everyone an earring

  914. of gold. So they pooled their money.

  915. Job, good businessman that he was,

  916. invested it and pretty soon things took

  917. off and he had twice as much.

  918. Now I don't know how much you got

  919. financially,

  920. but I'm sure you wouldn't mind getting

  921. twice as much.

  922. God gave him twice as much.

  923. Why?

  924. Cuz now he could have handled it.

  925. So the Lord blessed the latter end of

  926. Job more than the beginning, for he had

  927. 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels,

  928. 1,000 yoke of oxen and 1,000 she-asses.

  929. He also had seven sons and three

  930. daughters. These are new ones.

  931. You say, "Well, why didn't he get 14

  932. sons and six daughters?" He didn't need

  933. that because

  934. these sons and these daughters were in

  935. heaven. He didn't need to get them the

  936. new ones. They had the ones in heaven

  937. and the ones on earth.

  938. G. Campbell Morgan's family, if you read

  939. his biography and I forgot the numbers

  940. exactly, they would say, "How much How

  941. many children in your family?" He was

  942. talking about G. Campbell Morgan's

  943. parents' family. And they would answer,

  944. "Seven. One in heaven, six on earth."

  945. Cuz one of them had died.

  946. There were some some figure like that.

  947. And so Job had seven sons in heaven, sat

  948. daughters in heaven, and then he gets

  949. seven more on earth and three three more

  950. daughters and he called the name of the

  951. first Jemimah and the name of the second

  952. Keziah and the name of the third

  953. Keren-happuch.

  954. And in all the land there were no women

  955. as fair as the daughters of Job and

  956. their father gave them inheritance with

  957. their brethren.

  958. And after this

  959. lived Job 140 years and saw his sons and

  960. his sons' sons and the four generations

  961. Job died being old

  962. and full of days.

  963. So God made it up to him, didn't he?

  964. So Job was a man

  965. who experienced unusual provisions from

  966. God.

  967. And God didn't give him to him till he

  968. put him through the ringer

  969. uh of providence to prepare him for

  970. that.

  971. And of course we all think we need more

  972. than we got

  973. but we're maybe we're maybe it would

  974. hurt us if we got it too soon or too

  975. fast or too much.

  976. Seven, Job was a man

  977. who experienced unusual spiritual

  978. progress.

  979. These debates, as wrong as his friends

  980. were

  981. clarified the truth

  982. for Job.

  983. He learned the hard way.

  984. I know you're wrong.

  985. I know you're wrong. I know you're

  986. wrong.

  987. And I know that what you're saying about

  988. me is not true and where you're looking

  989. at things are not true.

  990. And in that debate things came out and

  991. things came up and things became

  992. clarified.

  993. Let me illustrate what I'm saying.

  994. Job 14, can you go there, please.

  995. Job 14.

  996. This [clears throat] is Job.

  997. He's uh debating with his friends.

  998. But in that debate the debate he says

  999. this in verse seven for time's sake.

1000. For there is hope for a tree if it be

  1001. cut down

1002. that it will sprout again and that its

1003. tender branch will not cease.

1004. Though its root grow old in the earth

1005. and its stock die in the ground,

1006. yet at the scent of water it will bud

1007. and bring forth bows like a plant.

  1008. But man dies

  1009. and wastes away.

1010. Yea, man expires and where is he?

1011. As the waters fail from the sea and as

1012. the flood decays and dries up, so man

1013. lies down and rises not till the heavens

1014. be no more, they shall not awake nor be

1015. raised out of their sleep.

1016. What's going on there? Job did not

1017. understand the resurrection from the

  1018. dead.

1019. At this point it was something he didn't

1020. know much about or anything about in

  1021. fact it's it's like it's a denial.

1022. But when you get to chapter 19,

  1023. it's all changed.

  1024. Chapter 19.

  1025. Now you remember

  1026. Revelation is progressive.

1027. You can believe in an afterlife for the

1028. soul but not for the body and it was a

1029. little dark in the Old Testament people

  1030. about the future.

1031. But Job came to understand

1032. the resurrection the hard way.

1033. Just like Abraham did, the hard way in

1034. Genesis 22. God taught him the

1035. resurrection from the dead when he told

1036. him to offer up Isaac his son. And now

1037. Job's going to learn it. Remember these

1038. are 4,000 years ago. People are starting

  1039. to

1040. understand things they didn't were

1041. didn't have clarity on. I'm not saying

1042. there wasn't some clarity. Enoch walked

1043. with God and was not cuz God took him.

1044. There was some clarity, but it was very

  1045. foggy to them.

1046. And you learn things in the Bible

  1047. sometimes the hard way.

1048. Now I know what this verse means.

  1049. Now I understand this.

1050. It's not all book work.

1051. In Job 19, I call your attention.

1052. And Job answered and said, "How long

1053. will you vex my soul and break me in

  1054. pieces with words?

1055. These 10 times you've approached me and

1056. you're not ashamed that you make

  1057. yourself strange to me.

1058. And be it indeed that I have erred, mine

  1059. error remains with myself.

1060. Job's pretty upset with them.

1061. And he's going on and on and on

  1062. with them.

1063. And he says in verse 19 or verse 18,

1064. "Yea, young children despise me. I

1065. arose, they spoke against me. All my

1066. inward friends abhorred me and they all

1067. and they whom I loved turned against me.

1068. My bone cleaves to my skin and to my

  1069. flesh. I am escaped

1070. with the skin of my teeth."

1071. There's where that expression comes

  1072. from.

1073. "Have pity on me, have pity on me, my

1074. friends, for the hand of the Lord has

1075. touched me. Why do you persecute me as

1076. God and are not satisfied with my flesh.

1077. And then he comes up with this, it was a

  1078. moment of illumination.

  1079. He knew

1080. the end couldn't be like this.

  1081. And he said, "Oh,

1082. that my words were now written. Oh, that

1083. they were printed in a book, that they

1084. were engraved with an iron pen and led

1085. in the rock forever. This is something

1086. everybody needs to know. This is

1087. something I understand now. This life is

1088. not the only life. There's another life

1089. where God's going to make it right."

1090. And I know my redeemer lives.

1091. And that he'll stand at the latter day

1092. on the earth. I know something about

1093. God. I know something about a redeemer.

  1094. Now I get it.

1095. And I think all of a sudden he had seen

  1096. sight

1097. into animal sacrifices, insight into

  1098. redemption by

1099. blood, insight about the next life and

1100. what we call individual eschatology.

1101. I know that my redeemer lives.

1102. He'll stand at the latter day on the

  1103. earth.

1104. And though after my skin worms destroy

  1105. this body,

1106. yet in my flesh I'll see God.

  1107. What's that?

  1108. That's resurrection.

1109. That's resurrection after the body has

  1110. decayed.

1111. That's resurrection after worms eat you.

1112. Somebody There was a missionary who was

1113. going to the mission field where there

1114. were cannibals, and somebody said,

1115. "Don't go, they'll eat you." And he

1116. said, "Well, if I stay here, the worms

  1117. will eat me."

1118. So what makes the difference?

1119. So [clears throat] James Job Job says,

1120. "Though after my skin worms destroy this

1121. body, yet in my flesh I'll see God, whom

1122. I shall see for myself, and my eyes

1123. shall behold, and not another, though my

1124. heart be consumed within me." It's

1125. awfully tough, but I know something now

  1126. I never knew before.

  1127. You know, that's what affliction's for,

  1128. right?

  1129. God doesn't afflict willingly.

1130. And so, a powerful passage.

  1131. There's life after life.

1132. There's resurrection from the dead.

1133. You wonder why God let Job go through

  1134. this?

1135. He needed to see it. There's no way a

1136. righteous God can let my life end like

  1137. this, and that's it.

  1138. I die,

1139. but to see my redeemer.

1140. Things opened up for him.

1141. Now, if we're ever going to be

  1142. successful

1143. in spiritual combat, we have to have

1144. clear crystal clarity on the

  1145. resurrection from the dead.

1146. That's what Paul said in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 15:12–19

  1147. 15:12-19 and 30-31.

1148. You If If Christ isn't raised, you're

  1149. yet in your sins.

1150. And if this If in this life only we have

  1151. hope in Christ,

1152. we are of all men most miserable.

  1153. So,

  1154. fascinating stuff.

  1155. Pardon me, but

1156. I thought my allergies were over, but

  1157. they're kicking in a little bit.

1158. >> So, all this is precious stuff.

  1159. Um [clears throat]

1160. in Jesus we find the innocent can

  1161. suffer.

1162. But Job found that out

1163. ahead of time. In Jesus we find the dead

1164. are raised. In Jesus we find sins can be

1165. forgiven. There's so many things we get

1166. when we know something about Jesus, who

1167. he was and what he did for us.

1168. And remember Job earlier complained in

  1169. chapter 9

1170. about God, he's not a man that I should

1171. answer him and should come together in

1172. judgment. Neither is there any daysman

  1173. between us

1174. that might lay his hand on us both.

1175. Well, there is now. His name is Jesus.

1176. There's a mediator now. His name is

  1177. Jesus.

1178. Isn't it interesting Job and his friends

  1179. talked

1180. so much about everything and no one

  1181. mentioned the devil?

1182. Not one of them mentioned the devil.

  1183. Job didn't know it.

1184. Job didn't know it was the devil butt

1185. beating on him. His friends didn't know

1186. it. They didn't know about the devil's

  1187. part in all this.

1188. They were ignorant of the greater battle

  1189. going on

  1190. in the invisible war

1191. or the conflict of the ages, however you

  1192. want to put it.

  1193. Now, we know

1194. because in the first two chapters of the

1195. book it's revealed to us ahead of time,

1196. so we can read the whole debate in light

  1197. of that.

1198. But they didn't know at the time.

1199. That was only revealed later.

1200. So, we're let in on the secret by

1201. chapters 1 and 2, but Job and his

1202. friends are ignorant of that. Not one of

1203. them brought up the devil.

  1204. There's a lot of stuff we don't know.

  1205. In our own life,

1206. we just know it from down here.

1207. We don't know what's going on between

  1208. God and Satan.

1209. So, apparently, God revealed to Job

  1210. the inside story

1211. after it was all over. That's why it's

  1212. in the book

  1213. of Job.

1214. Job was a man commended by God, attacked

1215. by Satan, criticized by his best

1216. friends, tempted by his beloved wife.

1217. Blow after blow, blow after blow,

  1218. but he

  1219. he improved

1220. through it. He was a better man

1221. and produced a wonderful book, the book

  1222. of Job.

1223. One writer called the book of Job the

1224. Matterhorn of the Old Testament.

  1225. That's a pretty good compliment.

1226. There's no battles in it.

1227. There's no miracles in the book.

1228. Uh but there's a testing of Satan and

1229. just a lot of long discussion.

1230. But it has a multifaceted purpose, not

  1231. just one.

  1232. And there's applications galore.

  1233. And

1234. we need to know the latter end of Job.

1235. We need to know Job the way

1236. the book of James teaches Job.

  1237. The latter end.

1238. You need to know your latter end.

1239. I know my redeemer lives, and after

1240. worms have destroyed this body, yet in

1241. my flesh I'll see God.

1242. You need to know that God has in charge

1243. of us, but what the The gives and the

  1244. Lord takes away. Blessed

1245. be the name of the Lord. But the Lord

1246. that takes away gives twice as much

  1247. later.

1248. If God takes something from you, he's

1249. you're going to get more than that back.

1250. It's important to know that.

  1251. Um

1252. So, may God help us.

  1253. Um

1254. Not all young people become old people.

  1255. Here's an application.

1256. Job's 10 kids were killed before they

  1257. got old.

1258. Not all young people become old people

  1259. even if

1260. old people parents pray for them.

1261. Job prayed for his 10 children, they

1262. were slain, but they were

1263. they survived. They're they were in

1264. glory. He was he was he's with them now.

1265. Not old not all old people have the

1266. right answers even though they think

  1267. they do.

  1268. Well, there's an application.

1269. In this life, we go through life, but

1270. there are right answers and wrong

1271. answers, but not everyone knows

1272. everything even though they think they

  1273. do.

1274. So, not all people are right even when

  1275. they think they are.

1276. And even the people that are right

1277. compared to others are not totally right

  1278. as Job was.

  1279. Not totally right.

1280. He spoke better than them, but that

1281. didn't make him completely right.

  1282. Job

1283. was a ministry of one.

  1284. He was alone,

  1285. totally alone.

  1286. He had no help,

1287. had no real comfort, had no human

  1288. fellowship,

1289. but alone, he made a very big

  1290. contribution.

  1291. He's not alone anymore.

  1292. Number six,

  1293. God hears every conversation.

1294. This is where it gets a little scary.

1295. All these guys, those old guys talking

1296. to each other, blasting Job for this,

1297. blasting him for that, but

1298. misrepresenting him, giving him a hard

1299. time, a little bit overconfident,

1300. and Job answering, but sometimes getting

1301. out of line even in his answers, not

1302. necessarily sinning, but not being right

  1303. in everything he said.

1304. He was righter than they were, but that

  1305. didn't make him right.

1306. But God hears every conversation.

1307. Every word that a man speaks you will

1308. give account the day of judgment, Jesus

1309. said, and that's an awesome thought.

1310. That doesn't mean we won't be forgiven,

1311. it just means God's going to correct it

  1312. all.

1313. Just like he corrected Job's friends.

1314. We're going to realize everything.

  1315. I shouldn't have said that.

  1316. Shouldn't have said that. I shouldn't

  1317. have said that.

  1318. Think it'll be a fast process, but a

  1319. painful one.

1320. Last application, Satan is not passive.

  1321. Satan is not idle.

  1322. He's He is on a leash.

  1323. It's God's leash.

1324. There's nothing passive about Satan.

1325. Somebody asked a trick question to a

1326. person. They said, "All right, you're a

1327. Christian. Tell me one good thing about

  1328. Satan."

1329. Christian thought a little bit. He said,

  1330. "He's a hard worker."

  1331. >> [laughter]

  1332. >> Well, that's true.

1333. Satan goes about as a roaring lion

1334. seeking who he may devour. He's a hard

  1335. worker.

1336. So, Satan is not passive.

1337. He is on a leash. He will go as far as

1338. God He can He can't go farther than God

  1339. lets him.

1340. He will go just as far. He'll go right

1341. up to that. Squirm like a spoiled kid.

1342. You tell them one thing, they're going

1343. to go right to the line.

1344. They can't go over, but they'll go right

  1345. up to it.

  1346. Uh he's on a leash, but that's God's

  1347. leash.

1348. And Satan is our fence fencing master,

  1349. someone said.

1350. He helps us learn how to use our

  1351. weapons.

  1352. And God

1353. the tour Job through all of this pain. I

1354. don't know how many months it lasted,

1355. but when it was over, it was over.

1356. And it was into the months, but when it

1357. was over, it was over.

  1358. And then

  1359. Job was able

  1360. to handle

  1361. the double blessing

  1362. that God gave him.

1363. Someday, we may not get the double

1364. blessing in this life. We probably

1365. won't, but we'll get more than that in

  1366. the next life.

1367. This life is just training

1368. for us to be able to handle

  1369. the avalanche

  1370. and bountiful

  1371. blessing

1372. of being in a resurrected body

1373. with the Lord living forever in new

  1374. heavens and new earth.

1375. A reunion that is beyond comprehension.

  1376. A a

1377. that is beyond our ability to even

  1378. imagine.

1379. God is preparing us for that.

1380. So, remember the latter end

  1381. of Job.

1382. And the book of Job ends on that note.

  1383. The latter end.

1384. Well, what if we don't remember the

  1385. latter end of Job?

  1386. Well, then

  1387. we are not battling

1388. with all the weapons that God has given

1389. us. The book of Job is a weapon to use

  1390. against Satan.

1391. When Satan gets against you, if you know

1392. the book of Job, you've got an advantage

  1393. against him.

1394. Therefore, take my brethren the prophets

1395. who spoken in the name of the Lord for

1396. an example of suffering affliction and

  1397. patience.

1398. Behold, we count them happy or blessed

  1399. who endure.

1400. You've heard of the endurance of Job.

  1401. James 5:11.

    James 5:11

1402. And have seen the end of the Lord

1403. that the Lord is very pitiful

  1404. and of tender mercy.

1405. Father, thank you for what we looked at

  1406. today.

  1407. I don't know the challenges or

1408. trials or troubles of everyone here. I

  1409. know some of them.

1410. You know all of them.

1411. There are things that we're just too

1412. embarrassed to share with people

1413. sometimes. It's so hard, so bad.

  1414. It doesn't mean that we're alone

  1415. in our afflictions.

  1416. And there's

  1417. a maliciousness about Satan

1418. against all of God's people. He hates

  1419. it.

1420. He wants everyone to be on his side

  1421. against God.

1422. Can't stand it when somebody stands up

  1423. to him.

1424. So, he attacks and he does it with all

  1425. the viciousness

  1426. and vitriol

  1427. that he can.

1428. And Father, we thank you for the battle,

1429. and we look forward when the battle is

  1430. over.

1431. And we wrestle not with flesh and blood,

1432. but principalities and powers and

1433. spiritual wickedness in heavenly places.

1434. Like Job, we're in the battle,

1435. but someday like Job, the battle will be

  1436. over.

1437. And we remember the latter end of Job,

1438. and we remember our latter end you

  1439. promised.

  1440. In Jesus' name.

  1441. Amen.

1442. >> Lord, [singing] as we go from this

  1443. place,

1444. loving [singing] you [music] more,

  1445. trusting you more,

1446. may the power of your

  1447. love

1448. and the light of your [singing] word

  1449. shine

  1450. >> [music]

  1451. >> through a sin-darkened

1452. world as we go [singing and music] from

  1453. this place.
