  1. Open your Bibles, please, to the last book of the Bible, Revelation.

  2. And if you don't have a Bible, raise your hand.

  3. We'd love to bring you a copy that you can use, you could have, and take home with you.

  4. We're in Revelation chapter 14, verses 1 to 5.

    Revelation 14:1–5

  5. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  6. Heavenly Father, we gather in your name once again this week.

  7. And we humble ourselves and incline our ears to you again, to your Word.

  8. Because you are our Lord, our King.

  9. And we want to be where you are.

  10. We want to go where you go.

  11. We want to imitate your character.

  12. We want to be representatives and witnesses of Jesus.

  13. So, Lord, to that end, now speak to us and by your powerful Word, transform us.

  14. In Jesus' name we pray.

  15. Amen.

  16. Amen.

  17. If you are willing and able, please stand for the reading of God's Word from Revelation chapter 14, verses 1 through 5.

    Revelation 14:1–5

  18. Then I looked, and behold, on Mount Zion stood the Lamb.

  19. And with him, 144,000 who had his name and his Father's name written on their foreheads.

  20. And I heard a voice from heaven like the roar of many waters and like the sound of loud thunder.

  21. The voice I heard was like the sound of harpists playing on their harps.

  22. And they were singing a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and before the elders.

  23. No one could learn that song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth.

  24. It is these who have not defiled themselves with women, for they are virgins.

  25. It is these who follow the Lamb wherever he goes.

  26. These have been redeemed from mankind as first fruits for God and the Lamb.

  27. And in their mouth no lie was found, for they are blameless.

  28. This is God's holy and authoritative Word.

  29. Please be seated.

  30. When I was a student at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary,

  31. I think some of you guys were just there this weekend to see some of our church members run a race in that area.

  32. There was an older gentleman there named Mark Horvath who worked in campus security.

  33. And he's now retired, but he was one of the people that I respected the most at seminary

  34. because despite being pretty much unknown and unheralded for decades of his service and work there,

  35. he did so so faithfully and joyfully.

  36. And even though his work wasn't directly related to Christian ministry,

  37. he considered it an honor to serve a seminary campus.

  38. And whenever he got the chance to speak one-on-one with a seminary student,

  39. he would take the opportunity to exhort them, and this is what he would say.

  40. He told me this several times throughout my time in seminary.

  41. Sean, when you become a pastor, please take two Sundays to preach one sermon on heaven and one sermon on hell.

  42. It was a simple but profound counsel.

  43. I think he was sensing a drift in people's understanding of these topics

  44. and noticing the consequent loss of an eternal perspective that should govern our lives.

  45. In his book, The Eclipse of Heaven, theologian A.J. Conyers concurs with Mark.

  46. He says,

  47. These are not prominent considerations in our modern discourse

  48. about the important matters of life,

  49. but they once were.

  50. Keeping heaven and hell in view keeps our perspectives and our priorities aligned.

  51. It motivates us to press on in faith and obedience

  52. and to share urgently the saving news of Jesus Christ with others.

  53. It holds out both the reward of heaven and the punishment of hell,

  54. calling believers to perseverance and unbelievers to repentance.

  55. That's precisely what Revelation 14 does for us as well,

  56. and we're going to talk primarily about heaven today and about hell next week.

  57. Whenever the Bible speaks of heaven,

  58. it focuses on two most important aspects about heaven,

  59. which is namely the presence of God and the people of God who dwell there with him.

  60. Heaven is in essence the place where God dwells with his redeemed people

  61. in the fullness of his glory.

  62. We'll get the definitive biblical treatment of heaven in the later chapters of Revelation,

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  63. chapters 21 and 22,

  64. but here we still get a glimpse of what the redeemed people of God in heaven are like.

  65. And they are those who maintain their undivided devotion to Christ

  66. despite the persecution of the beast.

  67. That's the main point of that passage.

  68. We see four specific details about the redeemed,

  69. and they are that they are soldiers,

  70. second, that they are singers,

  71. third, they are virgins,

  72. and fourth, they are first fruits.

  73. And we're going to talk about each of those in turn.

  74. But before we see the army of the redeemed,

  75. we see first the Lamb of God in verse 1.

  76. It says,

  77. Then I looked, and behold, on Mount Zion stood the Lamb.

  78. The Lamb of chapter 14 is set in stark contrast with the dragon and the beasts

  79. that we saw in chapter 13.

  80. Sorry, did I say chapter 14 earlier?

  81. Chapter 14 is where we see the Lamb.

  82. Chapter 13 is where we see the dragon and the beasts.

  83. The second beast in Revelation 13, 11 had two horns like a lamb,

  84. but spoke like a dragon.

  85. All the false messiahs and the pretenders out there,

  86. they all try to look like Jesus.

  87. They try to look like the Lamb.

  88. But we know what they are by what they say,

  89. by their words, and we've talked about that.

  90. The dragon in chapter 12, verse 17, stood on the sand of the sea,

  91. but here the Lamb stood on Mount Zion.

  92. The sand of the sea is a symbol of impermanence and instability.

  93. You can write messages on the sand.

  94. I'm sure you guys have done this all you want.

  95. Draw little hearts on the sand and build sand castles on the sand.

  96. And momentarily, they're all gone, washed away by the incoming tide.

  97. In contrast, a mountain is a symbol of permanence and stability.

  98. Whenever I visit Seattle to see my parents,

  99. I notice that much of the landscape and the cityscape has changed.

  100. There are new buildings.

  101. There are new roads where there weren't roads before.

  102. There are new trees planted or trees raised.

  103. There's all kinds of changes,

  104. but there's one thing that's always there that doesn't change,

  105. and that's Mount Rainier in the backdrop of the city.

  106. It's stable, immovable, permanent.

  107. This contrast between the dragon that is standing on the sands of the sea

  108. and the Lord, the Lamb of God that's standing on Mount Zion,

  109. it evokes what Jesus says in Matthew 7, 24 to 27.

  110. Because those who follow the dragon are like the people

  111. who build their house on shifting sand,

  112. which will surely come crashing down.

  113. But those who build on the rock,

  114. those who follow the Lamb are like those who build on the rock,

  115. those who build on a mountain

  116. that will withstand all the floods and the winds.

  117. With the final battle between the Lamb and the dragon and the beasts

  118. soon to be described in Revelation 19, 20,

  119. it's also hard not to notice the strategic advantage of the Lamb's position.

  120. Military manuals for thousands of years have written and taught that in war,

  121. you should take the high ground and force your enemy to attack from the low ground.

  122. Why? Because the high ground gives you an elevated vantage point from which you can see wider and further.

  123. And also because gravity is on your side and it's much more wearying to charge uphill.

  124. And because gravity is on your side, your projectiles also travel much further when you're shooting from uphill.

  125. So this final battle is already decided.

  126. The Lamb is going to win.

  127. And these people who are with Him are going to be part of that victory and triumph and celebration.

  128. Mount Zion is symbolically significant because, as Scripture repeatedly says,

  129. the Lord of hosts reigns on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem.

  130. And in Psalm 2, there was a prophecy that God says,

  131. where God says, I have set my king on Mount Zion, on my holy hill.

  132. And that's Him speaking of the Messianic king that will come, which is Jesus.

  133. And of Him, God says, you are my son.

  134. Today I have begotten you.

  135. I will make the nations your heritage and the ends of the earth your possession.

  136. You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.

  137. That's being fulfilled in this heavenly vision.

  138. Jesus, the King, the Lamb of God, standing on Mount Zion to bring vengeance upon the enemies of God

  139. and to deliver His people forever.

  140. But it doesn't necessarily mean that Jesus will literally and physically come and stand on Mount Zion

  141. in Jerusalem in the Middle East one day.

  142. Because Mount Zion is also used symbolically throughout Scripture.

  143. Hebrews 12, 22 says, Mount Zion is the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem.

  144. Galatians 4, 26 likewise calls it the Jerusalem above, not here on the earth, but above.

  145. So Mount Zion is figuratively describing the spiritual abode of God's people.

  146. That's why, even though the 144,000 are standing on Mount Zion, it says,

  147. their voice, in verse 2, is heard from heaven.

  148. And they are singing before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders,

  149. which we all know from chapter 4, are in the throne room of God in heaven.

  150. So John's vision is depicting a heavenly reality that will soon come to bear upon the earth.

  151. And in heaven, the Lamb is not alone.

  152. He's surrounded by His heavenly army.

  153. It says in verse 1,

  154. Then I looked, and behold, on Mount Zion stood the Lamb,

  155. and with Him 144,000 who had His name and His Father's name written on their foreheads.

  156. John mentions the 144,000 here without any further explanation

  157. because He already gave us a detailed explanation of who they are earlier in chapter 7.

  158. There, the angels sealed the servants of God on their foreheads,

  159. and those who were sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel numbered 144,000,

  160. 12,000 from each tribe.

  161. I preached on that chapter, chapter 7, in December,

  162. and I explained to you that the 144,000 do not represent the Jewish Christians only

  163. or only some special class of elite Christians,

  164. but that it represents all of God's redeemed people throughout the ages.

  165. And if you want more detailed explanations of that,

  166. I encourage you to listen to that sermon

  167. because I'm going to go through that briefly here.

  168. The number 144,000 is a symbolic representation of all of God's people

  169. from all nations, Jews and Gentiles.

  170. The number 12 often throughout Scripture represents the people of God.

  171. Why?

  172. Because of the 12 tribes of Israel and 12 apostles of the Lamb,

  173. apostles of Jesus Christ who formed the foundation of the church of God.

  174. And the number 1,000 is a figurative number in the same way we use it,

  175. representing a multitude.

  176. And when you multiply 12 by 1,000, you get 12,000,

  177. which is the number of the sealed from each of the tribes of the redeemed,

  178. of the redeemed Israel.

  179. And when you add that up, you get 144,000.

  180. In Revelation 21, we see the new Jerusalem,

  181. which we are told explicitly is the bride, the wife of the Lamb,

  182. which is an allusion to the people of God, the church of Christ.

  183. And this new Jerusalem has 12 gates

  184. with the names of the 12 tribes of the sons of Israel inscribed on them.

  185. And it has 12 foundations,

  186. which have the 12 names of the 12 apostles of the Lamb written on them.

  187. And so this is very consistently used symbols here.

  188. When you multiply 12 tribes of Israel, 12 apostles of the Lamb,

  189. and then that's 144, and then you multiply that by 1,000,

  190. you get 144,000, which symbolically represents the fullness of all of God's people.

  191. I mentioned all of these things to you earlier,

  192. but what I didn't mention to you when I preached in chapter 7

  193. is that the 144,000 also represent the redeemed people of God as soldiers,

  194. as the heavenly army.

  195. There are several clues for this.

  196. First, Revelation 7, 5 to 8,

  197. which first described the 144,000,

  198. is intentionally stylized like an Old Testament census.

  199. It gives the tribe, it says,

  200. 12,000 from the tribe of Judah,

  201. 12,000 from the tribe of Reuben, and so on.

  202. And in the Old Testament,

  203. the census is always taken

  204. to determine the military might of the nation.

  205. And this is confirmed later by Revelation 19, 14,

  206. where John sees a vision of Jesus riding on a white horse in heaven,

  207. and he notes that the, quote,

  208. the armies of heaven,

  209. arrayed in fine linen,

  210. white horses,

  211. following him on white horses.

  212. So that's confirmation,

  213. that this is the armies of heaven.

  214. And here in chapter 14, verse 4,

  215. we are told that the 144,000 likewise follow the lamb wherever he goes.

  216. It's the same group of people.

  217. Their identity as soldiers, I think,

  218. is partly why they are described in verse 4

  219. as not having defiled themselves with women,

  220. for they are virgins.

  221. This is not because all of the 144,000

  222. are literally male virgins,

  223. but because they represent God's holy army.

  224. Because the Israelite army in the Old Testament

  225. is engaged in holy war,

  226. they were commanded in Deuteronomy 23, 9-11

  227. that the sisters are to keep themselves from becoming unclean.

  228. And specifically,

  229. they had to remain ritually clean while at war

  230. by abstaining from sexual intercourse

  231. because even accidental nocturnal emission of semen

  232. made them ritually unclean,

  233. according to the specific commands there.

  234. This was not because sex is evil in and of itself,

  235. but because it was intended to teach the Israelites

  236. the meaning of consecration,

  237. what it means to be set apart for God,

  238. to be different from the other nations.

  239. To give you an example,

  240. in Leviticus 11,

  241. you see an extensive set of dietary laws

  242. that the Israelites had to observe.

  243. They're forbidden from eating various kinds of animals,

  244. not because those animals are evil or bad in and of themselves,

  245. but because,

  246. as God says in Leviticus 11, 14,

  247. for,

  248. this is the reason,

  249. for I am the Lord your God.

  250. Consecrate yourselves,

  251. therefore,

  252. and be holy,

  253. for I am holy.

  254. That's the reason why they had to observe those laws.

  255. To be holy means to be set apart,

  256. to be uncommon,

  257. because Israelites didn't eat those animals,

  258. they were unlike all the other nations surrounding them.

  259. It set them apart.

  260. It made them different,

  261. and it reminded them.

  262. That was precisely the point.

  263. It reminded them,

  264. we are not like the other nations,

  265. because we belong to God.

  266. God has set us apart,

  267. especially for himself.

  268. Similarly,

  269. for the Israelites,

  270. who are the soldiers that are at war,

  271. there could be no emission of semen

  272. among the Israelites' soldiers.

  273. Enemy soldiers would visit prostitutes.

  274. They would masturbate.

  275. They would rape their female captives,

  276. as soldiers have done for millennia,

  277. all throughout the world,

  278. but not the soldiers of God.

  279. They were not even allowed to sleep

  280. with their own wives.

  281. Why?

  282. Because they were holy,

  283. set apart for God,

  284. not like their enemy soldiers.

  285. In 1 Samuel 21,

  286. we see an example of this principle at work.

  287. When David and his soldiers are fleeing from Saul,

  288. they take refuge with Ahimelech,

  289. the priest,

  290. briefly and ask him for some bread.

  291. But Ahimelech,

  292. the priest,

  293. informs them,

  294. there is no common bread on hand,

  295. but only holy bread.

  296. And because there's only holy bread

  297. that's been consecrated to God,

  298. he tells David and the young men,

  299. if they can help themselves to the bread,

  300. if the young men have kept themselves from women.

  301. And David answers him,

  302. truly women have been kept from us,

  303. as always,

  304. when I go on an expedition.

  305. This is how they always fought in war.

  306. God's soldiers were to keep themselves from women

  307. while at war.

  308. Let's see this law at work in 2 Samuel 11,

  309. when David commits adultery

  310. with Uriah's wife,

  311. Bathsheba.

  312. Right?

  313. David commits adultery with her

  314. and impregnates her

  315. and he's trying to cover his tracks.

  316. He's trying to hide it.

  317. And so he commands Uriah,

  318. who is a valiant man,

  319. fighting in the battles of the Lord,

  320. he recalls his home.

  321. He tells him to come home.

  322. And then he throws Uriah a party,

  323. feasts him,

  324. feeds him full,

  325. and makes him drunk,

  326. gives him all this choice wine,

  327. gets him drunk,

  328. and then he tells him,

  329. hey, go to your house and rest.

  330. He wants Uriah to sleep with Bathsheba

  331. so that he can pass off his kid as Uriah's

  332. and act like nothing happened.

  333. Isn't it amazing how Bible really doesn't hold up

  334. these heroes as real heroes,

  335. but tells us exactly what kind of sordid life they had?

  336. This is what David is trying to do.

  337. But this is what Uriah says to him.

  338. The ark and Israel and Judah dwell in booths.

  339. Meaning they're out on campaigns.

  340. And my lord Joab, his general,

  341. and the servants of my lord

  342. are camping in the open field.

  343. Meaning they're at war.

  344. Shall I then go to my house

  345. to eat and drink and to lie with my wife?

  346. As you live and as your soul lives,

  347. I will not do this thing.

  348. Amazing.

  349. Because they're in the middle of war,

  350. Uriah refuses to sleep with his own wife

  351. while he is drunk.

  352. Uriah refuses to do

  353. while he is drunk

  354. with his own wife

  355. what David does

  356. while he is totally sober

  357. with someone else's wife.

  358. I mean, that's crazy.

  359. We need more men named Uriah.

  360. Uriah.

  361. Anyway, that's...

  362. I mean, David's redeemed later on,

  363. so I know there's...

  364. David's a good name too.

  365. God has mercy on us.

  366. We're all sinners.

  367. So that's one reason why

  368. the 144,000 ark is described

  369. specifically as not having

  370. defiled themselves with women.

  371. They are soldiers at war

  372. following the commander-in-chief,

  373. the Lamb of God.

  374. Remember also that this chapter

  375. follows on the heels of chapter 13

  376. where the beast,

  377. which represents the worldly kingdoms

  378. and rulers

  379. that oppose Christ and his church,

  380. they put there the beast's name

  381. and the number of his name,

  382. the mark of the beast,

  383. on the foreheads

  384. of all of his followers.

  385. And those who refused

  386. to take his mark

  387. on their foreheads

  388. were embargoed

  389. from buying and selling

  390. and some of them were slain.

  391. The 144,000 are those people

  392. who refused to take

  393. the mark of the beast

  394. because they had

  395. the seal of God

  396. on their foreheads,

  397. the name of the Lamb

  398. and the name of his Father

  399. written on their foreheads.

  400. And ironically,

  401. this army of the redeemed,

  402. they conquered the dragon

  403. not by killing,

  404. but by dying.

  405. As it says in Revelation 12, 11,

  406. they have conquered him

  407. by the blood of the Lamb

  408. and by the word

  409. of their testimony,

  410. for they love not their lives

  411. even unto death.

  412. The 144,000

  413. are those who follow

  414. in the footsteps

  415. of the Lamb of God,

  416. who, as we saw

  417. in Revelation 5, 5-6,

  418. conquered by being slain.

  419. The Lamb defeated

  420. the dragon

  421. and redeemed his people

  422. by dying on the cross

  423. and pouring out his blood.

  424. And we also,

  425. as his people,

  426. likewise,

  427. are to defeat the dragon

  428. in this life

  429. by dying on the cross

  430. and pouring,

  431. carrying our own cross,

  432. dying to ourselves,

  433. bearing witness to Jesus.

  434. Jesus,

  435. even when we are persecuted

  436. and killed

  437. by the dragon

  438. and the beast.

  439. That's what the soldiers

  440. of the Lamb

  441. are meant to do.

  442. It says in 2 Timothy 2,

  443. 3-4,

  444. share in suffering

  445. as a good soldier

  446. of Christ Jesus.

  447. No soldier

  448. gets entangled

  449. in civilian pursuits

  450. since his aim

  451. is to please

  452. the one who enlisted him.

  453. A soldier

  454. ought to be focused

  455. and disciplined

  456. for the sake

  457. of the war at hand

  458. and not entangled

  459. in civilian affairs.

  460. Do your purposes,

  461. people of God,

  462. do your purposes

  463. and priorities in life

  464. reflect the spiritual reality

  465. that the dragon,

  466. the beast,

  467. and the false prophet

  468. are at large

  469. and after us?

  470. Are you sharing

  471. in the sufferings

  472. of Christ

  473. by bearing witness

  474. to him

  475. or are you

  476. shirking your responsibility

  477. as witness

  478. in search of the comforts

  479. and the distractions

  480. of civilian pursuits?

  481. Is your aim in life

  482. to please the one

  483. who enlisted you,

  484. your general,

  485. your king,

  486. Jesus Christ?

  487. or are you living

  488. to please someone else

  489. who wields,

  490. who wields in your life

  491. controlling influence

  492. upon your thoughts

  493. and behaviors?

  494. Is it Jesus

  495. or is it someone else?

  496. Are you,

  497. as verse four says,

  498. soldiers

  499. who follow the lamb

  500. wherever he goes

  501. or are you straying

  502. and following

  503. your own way?

  504. our country

  505. cherishes

  506. one of our greatest

  507. strengths as a nation

  508. that we cherish

  509. the values

  510. of individual freedom.

  511. But even here

  512. in the military,

  513. submission,

  514. following orders

  515. immediately

  516. and completely

  517. is considered

  518. of utmost importance.

  519. why?

  520. Because

  521. the chain of command

  522. is not respected

  523. in the military,

  524. it's impossible

  525. to maintain order,

  526. discipline,

  527. and unity

  528. in the army.

  529. Because soldiers

  530. often work

  531. in high stakes

  532. environment

  533. where following orders

  534. can be a matter

  535. of life and death,

  536. not only for themselves

  537. but for many others.

  538. A habit

  539. of questioning orders

  540. and delaying

  541. obeisance

  542. can prove deadly

  543. and imperil

  544. the entire mission.

  545. are we

  546. ready to follow

  547. our king,

  548. our general Jesus

  549. wherever he goes?

  550. Come what may be.

  551. Come fire or water.

  552. Go wherever

  553. he goes.

  554. the redeemed

  555. are soldiers.

  556. They're also singers.

  557. It says

  558. in verses 2-3,

  559. and I heard

  560. a voice from heaven

  561. like the roar

  562. of many waters

  563. and like the sound

  564. of loud thunder.

  565. The voice I heard

  566. was like the sound

  567. of harpists

  568. playing on their harps

  569. and they were singing

  570. a new song

  571. before the throne

  572. and before the four

  573. living creatures

  574. and before the elders.

  575. No one could learn

  576. that song

  577. except the 144,000

  578. who had been redeemed

  579. from the earth.

  580. The voice of the saints

  581. here is compared

  582. to the roar

  583. of many waters

  584. and the sound

  585. of loud thunder.

  586. Earlier in Revelation 1-15

  587. in John's exalted vision

  588. of Jesus,

  589. the risen Christ,

  590. it said that

  591. Jesus' voice

  592. was like the roar

  593. of many waters.

  594. many waters.

  595. The redeemed of Christ

  596. follow him

  597. wherever he goes

  598. and obeys

  599. whatever he says

  600. and now they even

  601. sound like him

  602. as they worship him.

  603. Ezekiel 1-24

  604. gives us more details

  605. about what the sound

  606. of the roar

  607. of many waters

  608. sounds like.

  609. It says,

  610. I heard the sound

  611. of their wings

  612. like the sound

  613. of many waters,

  614. like the sound

  615. of the almighty,

  616. a sound of tumult

  617. like the sound

  618. of an army.

  619. This sound,

  620. which is a sound

  621. of tumult

  622. like the sound

  623. of an army

  624. fits well again

  625. with the vision

  626. of that heavenly army.

  627. Imagine the sounds

  628. of a mighty host

  629. marching

  630. and you feel

  631. the rumbling

  632. of the ground

  633. like a roar

  634. of mighty waters

  635. like the Niagara Falls

  636. falling

  637. and as you draw nearer

  638. that deafening sound,

  639. you can make out

  640. what they're saying

  641. and they're singing

  642. like the sound

  643. of harpists.

  644. It's passages

  645. like this

  646. and Revelation 15-2

  647. where those who

  648. have conquered

  649. the beast

  650. and its image

  651. and the number

  652. of its name

  653. have harps

  654. of God

  655. in their hands.

  656. It's passages

  657. like this

  658. that have been

  659. frequently misused

  660. to create

  661. the impression

  662. that heaven

  663. is boring

  664. and unexciting.

  665. In his book,

  666. Heaven,

  667. Randy Alcorn

  668. writes about

  669. how a friend

  670. of his

  671. once honestly

  672. confessed to him,

  673. whenever I think

  674. about heaven,

  675. it makes me depressed.

  676. I'd rather just

  677. cease to exist

  678. when I die.

  679. And Alcorn

  680. asked him,

  681. why?

  682. And he answered,

  683. I can't stand

  684. the thought

  685. of that endless

  686. tedium

  687. to float around

  688. the clouds

  689. with nothing

  690. to do

  691. but strum

  692. a harp.

  693. it's all

  694. so terribly

  695. boring.

  696. Heaven

  697. doesn't sound

  698. much better

  699. than hell.

  700. I'd rather

  701. be annihilated

  702. than spend

  703. eternity

  704. in a place

  705. like that.

  706. That's a

  707. disastrous

  708. misconception.

  709. And he's

  710. completely

  711. missing the

  712. point of the

  713. singing

  714. that's intended

  715. to convey.

  716. First,

  717. singing is not

  718. the only thing

  719. that we'll be

  720. doing in heaven.

  721. I think that's

  722. obvious in many

  723. passages.

  724. 2 Timothy 2.12

  725. says we're

  726. promised if we

  727. endure that we

  728. will also reign

  729. with Christ.

  730. And then in

  731. the parable of

  732. the minus in

  733. Luke 19,

  734. Jesus says that

  735. the servant who

  736. is faithful with

  737. the gospel that

  738. has been trusted

  739. to him and

  740. bears much fruit

  741. and it brings

  742. back ten minus

  743. more will be

  744. given authority

  745. over ten cities.

  746. So we will have

  747. things to do

  748. in heaven.

  749. We will be

  750. involved in the

  751. governing of

  752. the kingdom

  753. of heaven,

  754. reigning with

  755. Christ.

  756. But the

  757. description of

  758. heaven in

  759. scripture often

  760. features singing

  761. because there's

  762. something about

  763. music and about

  764. singing that

  765. captures the

  766. transcendent joy

  767. of heaven.

  768. In his book,

  769. The Joy of

  770. Music,

  771. renowned American

  772. composer and

  773. conductor,

  774. Leonard Bernstein,

  775. recounts the

  776. conversation he

  777. had on a road

  778. trip with a

  779. friend of his

  780. who was a

  781. British poet.

  782. And they

  783. were driving

  784. through the

  785. mountainous

  786. region of the

  787. Picasso Pass of

  788. New Mexico and

  789. his friend remarks

  790. looking at the

  791. hills, he says,

  792. these hills are

  793. pure Beethoven.

  794. I don't know what

  795. that means but

  796. it must have been

  797. beautiful.

  798. And Bernstein

  799. follows up with the

  800. question, why

  801. Beethoven?

  802. Beethoven?

  803. Why not Bach,

  804. Mozart, Mendelssohn,

  805. or Schumann?

  806. And then they go

  807. back and forth

  808. discussing the

  809. merits of

  810. Beethoven's

  811. compositions, why

  812. they have such a

  813. transcendent and

  814. luminary quality.

  815. And then this is

  816. what Leonard

  817. Bernstein concludes.

  818. Quote, let me put

  819. it this way.

  820. Many, many

  821. composers have

  822. been able to

  823. write heavenly

  824. tunes and

  825. respectable views.

  826. Some composers

  827. can orchestrate the

  828. C major scale so

  829. that it sounds like

  830. a masterpiece or

  831. full with notes so

  832. that a harmonic

  833. novelty is achieved.

  834. But this is all

  835. mere dust.

  836. Nothing compared

  837. to the magic

  838. ingredients sought

  839. by them all.

  840. The inexplicable

  841. ability to know

  842. what the next

  843. note has to be.

  844. Beethoven had

  845. this gift in the

  846. degree that leaves

  847. them all panting

  848. in the rear guard.

  849. When he really

  850. did it, as in the

  851. funeral march of

  852. the Eroica, he

  853. produced an entity

  854. that always seems

  855. to me to have

  856. been previously

  857. written in heaven

  858. and then merely

  859. dictated to him.

  860. There is a special

  861. place carved out

  862. in the cosmos

  863. into which this

  864. movement just

  865. fits, predetermined

  866. and perfect.

  867. Form is only an

  868. empty word, a shell,

  869. without the gift

  870. of inevitability.

  871. A composer can

  872. write a string of

  873. perfectly molded

  874. sonata, allegro

  875. movements with

  876. every rule obeyed

  877. and still suffer

  878. from bad form.

  879. Beethoven broke

  880. all the rules and

  881. turned out pieces of

  882. breathtaking

  883. rightness.

  884. Rightness, that's

  885. the word.

  886. When you get the

  887. feeling that whatever

  888. note succeeds the

  889. last is the only

  890. possible note that

  891. can rightly happen at

  892. that instant.

  893. In that context,

  894. then chances are you're

  895. listening to Beethoven.

  896. Melodies, fugs,

  897. rhythms, leave them

  898. to the Tchaikovskis

  899. and the Hindemiths

  900. and the Ravels.

  901. Our boy has the

  902. real goods.

  903. The stuff from

  904. heaven, the power

  905. to make you feel

  906. at the finish.

  907. Something is right

  908. in the world.

  909. There's something

  910. that checks throughout,

  911. that follows its own

  912. law consistently,

  913. something we can

  914. trust that will

  915. never let us down.

  916. We might not

  917. appreciate music

  918. to the same level

  919. that Leonard

  920. Bernstein can,

  921. at least not in

  922. this life,

  923. but we do know

  924. that the best of

  925. music captures

  926. something of

  927. transcendence.

  928. They have a

  929. heavenly quality,

  930. whispers,

  931. rumors of God

  932. in them.

  933. In heaven,

  934. we're going to

  935. have the fullness

  936. of that.

  937. And these songs

  938. aren't just

  939. generic songs.

  940. They'll be

  941. worship songs.

  942. It says in

  943. verse 3,

  944. they were singing

  945. a new song

  946. before the throne

  947. and before the

  948. four living creatures

  949. and before the

  950. elders.

  951. No one could

  952. learn that song

  953. except the

  954. 144,000 who

  955. have been

  956. redeemed from

  957. the earth.

  958. Only the

  959. redeemed can

  960. sing this song

  961. because only the

  962. redeemed know

  963. God in a way

  964. that inspires

  965. eternal song.

  966. The singing of

  967. this new song

  968. is a recurring

  969. theme throughout

  970. the Old Testament,

  971. especially in the

  972. Psalms.

  973. It's always in

  974. response to God's

  975. triumph over the

  976. enemies.

  977. after his

  978. deliverance of

  979. his people.

  980. Some 3,500 years

  981. ago, after God

  982. split the Red

  983. Sea and delivered

  984. Israel from Egypt

  985. in Exodus 15,

  986. the people sang to

  987. him a new song.

  988. And the people of

  989. God have not

  990. stopped singing

  991. since then.

  992. Christians today

  993. still sing songs of

  994. worship written

  995. centuries ago,

  996. ancient times.

  997. Churches sing songs

  998. like Of the

  999. Father's Love

  1000. Begotten, O

  1001. Splendor of God's

  1002. Glory Bright.

  1003. They're written in

  1004. the 4th century A.D.

  1005. by Aurelius Clemens

  1006. Prudentius and

  1007. Ambrose, respectively.

1008. We still sing as a

  1009. local church the song

  1010. Be Thou My Vision

  1011. written in the 6th

  1012. century A.D.

  1013. by Dallin Forgeil.

  1014. I don't know how to

  1015. pronounce that Irish

  1016. name.

  1017. But we also sing

  1018. new songs.

  1019. Our musical history

  1020. team carefully

  1021. calls the large,

  1022. the ever increasingly

  1023. large body of new

  1024. worship songs that

  1025. are added to

  1026. Christian copyright

  1027. licensing internationally

  1028. every single week.

  1029. And they try to

  1030. introduce to us the

  1031. most edifying,

  1032. most stirring songs.

  1033. And there will

  1034. always be new

  1035. songs to sing

  1036. because God is

  1037. infinite.

  1038. And his glory is

  1039. inexhaustible.

  1040. Don't you feel this?

  1041. I feel this when I

1042. worship with you and I

  1043. sing on Sunday

  1044. mornings.

  1045. When you're

  1046. worshiping God in

  1047. song and as you

  1048. think of who God

1049. is, as you think of

  1050. his everlasting love

1051. and about what he has

1052. done to redeem us as

  1053. his people, how he

  1054. sent Jesus, his son,

1055. to die on the cross

1056. for our sins, how he

  1057. saved us from our

  1058. slavery to sin and

  1059. death.

  1060. And as you're singing

  1061. those songs, does it

  1062. not feel like your

  1063. heart's going to burst?

1064. Does it not feel like

1065. you need to shout at

1066. the top of your lungs

1067. and raise your arms to

  1068. heaven?

1069. And does it not make

1070. you want to sing again

  1071. and again and again?

1072. At the end of one of

  1073. the songs we're singing

  1074. this morning, I was

1075. just like, oh, I just

1076. want to sing that chorus

  1077. again.

1078. I just want to sing that

  1079. chorus again.

  1080. Because some things are

1081. too great to just talk

  1082. about.

  1083. Because God is too

  1084. great to just talk

  1085. about.

  1086. You have to sing.

  1087. Well, in heaven, we'll

  1088. get to do that.

1089. In the fullness of the

  1090. presence of God, we'll

1091. get to sing to him right

  1092. before his throne.

1093. And here in life, we

1094. could only sing so much

1095. before we get tired, we

  1096. get emotionally exhausted

  1097. before we lose our

  1098. voices.

1099. But in heaven, we will

  1100. never tire.

  1101. We'll get to sing.

  1102. Finally, in a way,

  1103. they'll give him the

  1104. worship that he deserves,

  1105. which is ceaseless praise,

  1106. ceaseless worship.

  1107. Because that's the kind

  1108. of worship that he

  1109. deserves.

1110. Any worship that ends at

  1111. any time is not

  1112. sufficient for the glory

  1113. of God.

  1114. And brothers and

  1115. sisters, we're going to

  1116. make a magnificent

  1117. choir.

1118. I look forward to that.

  1119. Not only that, the

  1120. redeemed people of God

  1121. are virgins.

  1122. Verse 4 has three

  1123. sentences that describe

  1124. what the redeemed are

  1125. like.

  1126. Each of those clauses

  1127. begin with these.

1128. It is these who have

  1129. not defiled themselves

  1130. with women for they

  1131. are virgins.

1132. It is these who follow

  1133. the lamb wherever he

  1134. goes.

  1135. These have been

  1136. redeemed from mankind

  1137. as first puts fruits

1138. for God and the lamb.

  1139. I'll be brief here

  1140. because I've already

  1141. talked about some of

  1142. these things.

  1143. In addition to the

  1144. idea of soldiers keeping

  1145. themselves ceremonially

  1146. clean during war, the

  1147. fact that they are

  1148. described as virgins

  1149. captures the purity of

  1150. the people of God.

  1151. This verse is not

  1152. referring, as I've said

  1153. before, to literal male

1154. virgins, but to all of

  1155. God's holy people, men

  1156. and women, married and

  1157. single, who have

  1158. maintained their

  1159. undivided devotion to

  1160. God and to Jesus

  1161. despite the persecution

  1162. of the beast.

  1163. The description of God's

  1164. soldiers as virgins is

  1165. especially appropriate

  1166. because later on in

  1167. Revelation 19, 7 to 9

  1168. and Revelation 21, 2,

  1169. they will be called

  1170. collectively the bride

  1171. of the lamb, clothed

  1172. with fine linen, bright

1173. and pure, prepared as a

  1174. bride adorned for her

  1175. husband.

  1176. We'll be a bride as

  1177. bride should be.

1178. This is why in 2 Corinthians

  1179. 11, 2, Paul describes

  1180. his ministry to the

  1181. Corinthian church this

  1182. way, I feel a divine

1183. jealousy for you since I

  1184. betrothed you to one

1185. husband to present you as

1186. a pure virgin to Christ.

1187. The church is a virgin

  1188. bride because they have

  1189. not defiled themselves with

  1190. the passion of Babylon's

  1191. sexual immorality as it

  1192. says in verse 8.

  1193. They have not succumbed

  1194. ultimately to the

  1195. temptation of the great

1196. harlot that we see in

  1197. Revelation chapter 17.

    Revelation 17 chapter mention

1198. This is not speaking of

  1199. physical virginity but

  1200. spiritual virginity.

1201. Are you a spiritual virgin

  1202. for Christ?

  1203. Revelation 21, 8 is

1204. crystal clear as for the

  1205. cowardly, the faithless,

  1206. the detestable, as for

  1207. murderers, the sexually

  1208. immoral, sorcerers,

  1209. idolaters, and all liars.

1210. Their portion will be in

1211. the lake that burns with

1212. fire and sulfur which is

  1213. the second death.

  1214. If there is any

  1215. unrepentant sin in your

1216. life, turn from it today.

  1217. Confess it to another

  1218. believer, another brother

1219. or sister in Christ in the

  1220. church this week.

  1221. find accountability and

  1222. take decisive steps to

1223. cut it out of your life

  1224. because it's a matter of

  1225. life and death.

1226. Because if you don't, you

1227. will not be counted among

  1228. the 144,000 virgins of

  1229. Christ.

1230. But if you repent and you

1231. trust in Jesus, no matter

1232. what you have done, maybe

1233. you are not only not a

1234. virgin but you've been so

  1235. promiscuous.

1236. But no matter what you have

1237. done, if you repent and you

1238. take hold of Jesus in faith,

1239. he will prove to you to be a

  1240. strong redeemer.

1241. And that's what we see in

  1242. verses 4 and 5.

  1243. These have been redeemed

  1244. from mankind as first

1245. fruits for God and the

  1246. lamb.

1247. And in their mouth no lie

1248. was found for they are

  1249. blameless.

1250. The idea of first fruits

1251. comes from one of the

  1252. three major pilgrimage

  1253. feasts that the Jews,

  1254. the Israelites celebrated

  1255. in the Old Testament

1256. called the feast of harvest

1257. of the first fruits of your

1258. labor, of what you sow in

  1259. the field.

  1260. It says in Exodus 23, 16.

1261. This feast came at the

  1262. beginning of the harvest

  1263. season.

  1264. And according to more

  1265. detailed instructions found

  1266. in Leviticus 23, Numbers 20

  1267. to 29, Deuteronomy 16, this

1268. feast began when the sickle

1269. is first put to the standing

  1270. grain.

1271. And after the first fruits of

  1272. the harvest are harvested,

1273. then the sheaf of the first

1274. fruits were to be waved before

1275. the Lord as an offering.

  1276. Because of the observance

1277. of this feast, the first

  1278. fruits, first fruit offering

  1279. comes to represent the

1280. portion of the harvest that

  1281. belongs specially to God.

  1282. God.

1283. This is why I, this is possible.

1284. Some people think that the

  1285. 144,000 are called first

1286. fruits because it's only the

  1287. initial harvest.

1288. And there will be later

  1289. harvest of more believers.

  1290. Some people argue that.

  1291. I don't think that's the case

1292. because these are those who

  1293. have been redeemed from

1294. mankind as first fruits for God

  1295. and the Lamb.

1296. I believe that represents all

  1297. of God's elect, all of God's

  1298. people because they are

1299. specially set aside for him.

1300. And I think the rest of the

1301. harvest that is to come is not

1302. the more of God's people but

1303. of the judgment harvest, the

1304. winepress of God's wrath that we

1305. see in the rest of chapter 14.

1306. This is confirmed by the fact that

1307. in the Old Testament, for

1308. example, in Jeremiah 2, verses

    Jeremiah 2:2–3

  1309. 2 to 3, all of God's people at

1310. the time are called the first of

1311. his harvest, first fruits, in

  1312. contradistinction to the pagan

  1313. nations.

1314. A related concept is the idea of

1315. the firstborn, which is also

1316. used to describe all of God's

1317. people in the Old Testament, not

1318. just a part of them, in

  1319. contradistinction to all the

  1320. other pagan nations.

1321. The idea of first fruits and

  1322. firstborns are explicitly

  1323. connected in Nehemiah 10, 35 to 37,

  1324. Psalm 78, 51, Psalm 105, 36,

1325. they're referring to the same

  1326. idea.

1327. As James 1, 18 says, of all of

1328. God's people, once again, of his

1329. only will, God brought us forth by

1330. the word of truth that we should

1331. be a kind of first fruits of his

  1332. creatures.

1333. That's what all of us are and all

1334. of God's people are if we belong

1335. to Christ, his special set-aside

  1336. chosen portion.

1337. And we are the special first fruits

1338. that belong to God, not because of

1339. our own merit, but because God has

1340. purchased or redeemed us, as it says

1341. twice in this passage, in verse 3 and

  1342. verse 4.

1343. The same word, redeem, though

  1344. translated slightly differently, is

1345. used in Revelation 5, 9 to say that

1346. the Lamb ransomed people for God by

1347. his blood from every tribe and

1348. language and people and nation.

1349. Once again, this proves that the

1350. 144,000, the first fruits, refer to

  1351. all of the redeemed.

1352. We are soldiers, singers, virgins, and

1353. first fruits that belong especially

  1354. to the bridge.

1355. A copying power is only for everyone

1356. but also for all of theSaans.

1357. Now, this is the bigger thing.

1358. This is the largest gift that you

1359. treasured home free from God!

1360. Because of your life, it has

1361. Has a victory right now.

1362. Golden glass and golden glass!

1363. Sometimes, again, it is under

  1364. point of Sermon.

  1365. Once again!

  1366. I watnt,しました!

  1367. But what people do

  1368. that happen carefully,

  1369. to anda,

  1370. to woe-diufeuess does
