  1. used up. We don't have any more out

  2. there. But on the back of the bulletin,

  3. if you have one from this morning,

  4. there's some upcoming events that I want

  5. everybody to be aware of and as much as

  6. possible support. We've got two

  7. missionaries coming in. I know we had

  8. two last month. We're getting pretty

  9. heavy on missionaries, but when they

  10. come that far, we ought to, if at all

  11. possible, support and uh their time with

  12. us uh with our presence and so forth.

  13. And so, the first one is Gospel Mission

  14. of South America missionaries. This

  15. church is well aware of that mission.

  16. And uh Dave and Christy Flink and their

  17. son Lucas are going to be with us August

  18. 5th.

  19. And that's Wednesday night at 7. So

  20. instead of Bible class on Wednesday, we

  21. you're new with us tonight, we have

  22. Bible class every Wednesday. But instead

  23. of Bible class, they will be giving a

  24. report and they are doing the same thing

  25. the Morelss were talking about when the

  26. Morels were here a couple of weeks ago.

  27. The uh they're they're start trying to

  28. start a church in northern Chile. That's

  29. a RA. That's right on the that's right

  30. on the border with Peru. it it is out in

  31. the middle of nowhere. And uh so Dave

  32. and Christie are good church planters.

  33. Christie was raised on the mission

  34. field. Her dad was general director. I'm

  35. very good friends with her dad's mom.

  36. Her mom was a baby in China when the

  37. communists took over and they had to run

  38. from the communist down the river in a

  39. boat. But u uh that's that's Terry and

  40. Terry Thompson and his wife. And then um

  41. Dave is a pastor's son from Minnesota.

  42. Good guy. Some of you know him. Some of

  43. you met him. And I'm looking forward to

  44. having them here. Please be here and

  45. encourage others to come August 5th,

  46. Wednesday at 7 p.m.

  47. Then

  48. >> August 12th,

  49. >> I think

  50. >> that's that was a mistake.

  51. >> I'm sorry. That was a mistake. Yeah. Uh

  52. >> my bad.

  53. >> Okay. You're loud, Mike. You're loud. I

  54. got the authoritative autograph here,

  55. right?

  56. >> Yeah.

  57. >> But uh

  58. >> we have a guest speaker from Friends of

  59. Israel. And if you get the magazine

  60. Israel, Mike Lori, the these are people

  61. do Jewish evangelism in Israel. and

  62. Annne Harper, who's not here tonight

  63. obviously cuz she can't get a ride uh uh

  64. from from Albany, but uh she supported

  65. this man and his wife for years. I've

  66. never met him. An's never met him.

  67. They're coming to meet the woman that's

  68. prayed for them and supported them all

  69. these years. And so I don't know this

  70. guy at all. His name is Jack Curts and

  71. he will be speaking at our evening

  72. service August 9th. August 9th. And so

  73. that'll be a Sunday evening, I believe.

  74. Am I right, Linda? And so he'll be all

  75. Sunday evening, August 9th. I love the

  76. the I love the people that love the Jews

  77. and try to minister there. And I know

  78. that that'll be a blessing to have him

  79. with us. We're trying to invite people

  80. in from some of the other churches to

  81. hear this guy when he comes uh and so

  82. forth.

  83. So, those are two things going on and uh

  84. let's be aware of that.

  85. >> Yeah,

  86. >> Dave and Christie, you said they were

  87. going to be here Wednesday at

  88. >> Dave and Christie will be here August

  89. 5th, Wednesday at 7.

  90. >> 7 o'clock. 7 o'clock. Yeah.

  91. >> And then

  92. >> August 9th, that's a Sunday evening.

  93. >> Six.

  94. >> At six o'clock.

  95. >> Yeah. Because you remember on Wednesday,

  96. B prayer meeting is 6 and then Bible

  97. study 7. So this guy's coming. He's

  98. going to be teaching it. So,

  99. okay, enough of all of that. We welcome

  100. you to our local assembly. Glad to have

  101. you with us tonight. And it's our

  102. practice often what we do, we do

  103. different things. Uh I have different

  104. sermon series I'm going through. I'm

  105. doing great text of the Bible on Sunday

  106. morning. We were in the book of Job this

  107. morning. Uh but uh and then we're all

  108. doing a whole study on the resurrection

  109. kind of alter of Christ and our

  110. resurrection. We're al those are topical

  111. studies. We are alternating

  112. uh that back and forth on Sunday

  113. morning. But we're doing the book of

  114. Jeremiah

  115. on Sunday nights and Wednesday nights.

  116. Sunday night and Wednesday nights we are

  117. normally going through the book of

  118. Jeremiah.

  119. So that's where we are. And guess what?

  120. We just got to the good part.

  121. This is a powerful place to be. If you I

  122. don't know how many of you have ever

  123. really worked through the book of

  124. Jeremiah. It's a big book. It's a long

  125. book. 50some chapters. And if you don't

  126. know where it is in your Bible, it's

  127. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel.

  128. So if you hit Isaiah, it's in the back

  129. of your Bible. If you hit, if you hit

  130. Isaiah, just go right. If you hit

  131. Ezekiel, go left, you should be able to

  132. pick it up. And we are in Jeremiah 31.

  133. And for those who haven't been with us,

  134. when I was preparing for this particular

  135. series, I read through the book of

  136. Jeremiah, and I like I like to mark up

  137. my Bibles. I always have study Bibles I

  138. can mark up.

  139. And I found references to idols 70 times

  140. in this book.

  141. That was a big problem back in

  142. Jeremiah's day.

  143. 70 times.

  144. And uh you say, "Well, how could that I

  145. can't relate to that. I don't worship

  146. idols. Never have worshiped idols."

  147. Everybody worships idols. Anything that

  148. you put above God's an idol. Anything I

  149. put above God is an idol. Anything that

  150. has God's place and is out of place in

  151. your life is an idol. Some people

  152. worship their car. Some people worship

  153. their house. Some people worship their

  154. job. Some people worship their country.

  155. Some people worship their kids. Now, we

  156. should love our country, should love our

  157. kids, but we don't worship them, right?

  158. We don't put them in God's place. We

  159. want God in God's place. And I love my

  160. wife, but I don't want to worship her. I

  161. I love her, but I don't want to give her

  162. God's place. And she doesn't certainly

  163. she's certainly not going to give me

  164. God's place. I'll tell you that. And so,

  165. it's very important for us to grasp some

  166. of these things. It's very applicant.

  167. But a lot of book of Jeremiah is

  168. negative. It's so negative you get tired

  169. of hearing it.

  170. And uh there was a Greek teacher at

  171. Princeton Seminary. His name was James

  172. Gisham Mach. And he was a he was a big

  173. shot. His family was very uh very uh

  174. well off and they they were very

  175. wellconed. They were friends with

  176. President Wilson back in the 20s.

  177. That's he was up with the upper crust.

  178. But when he went to Princeton Seminary,

  179. he they called him the accusative case.

  180. That was his nickname, the accusative

  181. case, because he would he would come

  182. after things that were wrong. And and

  183. that can get very worrisome, can it?

  184. When somebody's always negative. Some

  185. preachers are always negative. Don't do

  186. this. Don't watch out for that. They're

  187. against this. They're against that. But

  188. they never preach what they're for.

  189. And that's that wears people down.

  190. But Jeremiah was in a situation where

  191. God wanted him to give the people bad

  192. news.

  193. Now, I've had to give bad news to people

  194. many times. There's no way you can enjoy

  195. that. Someone's died and I need to tell

  196. them. Someone

  197. other things happen and they want me to

  198. tell them. And that's part of a pastor's

  199. job. And sometimes we have to give

  200. people bad news. And Jeremiah did it

  201. because that's what God told him to do.

  202. But after the bad news comes the good

  203. news. And guess what? Finally, we get to

  204. the good news. After 30 chapters, we get

  205. to the good news. 30 chapters of

  206. preaching against idolatry. And now we

  207. get to the good news. So you came at the

  208. right time tonight.

  209. So go come with me to Jeremiah 31.

  210. Jeremiah chapter 31.

    Jeremiah 31 chapter mention

  211. Now Jeremiah wasn't very popular. People

  212. wanted to kill him. I already wanted to

  213. execute him once for his preaching in

  214. the temple.

  215. He got through that.

  216. But finally he gets some good news. I

  217. want to give you the background.

  218. Jeremiah's preaching in the Jewish

  219. temple in Jerusalem.

  220. And Jeremiah has a prophecy here that

  221. God gave him that's absolutely

  222. stunning

  223. and it relates to us.

  224. It relates to what we're going to do

  225. tonight at the Lord's Supper

  226. and it relates directly to the Jewish

  227. people. But Jesus applied the same truth

  228. when he initiated the Lord's supper

  229. to the church to us.

  230. It's given to them, but we get in on it

  231. because of our relationship with Christ.

  232. And so, let's look at Jeremiah 31.

  233. And if you will read along with me,

  234. we're going to just, we cannot even

  235. begin to get through this chapter. It's

  236. 40 verses. We're just going to get the

  237. first 20 so verses and that'll be it.

  238. And we can just got a glance at that.

  239. So, please read along with me.

  240. At that time, says the Lord, will I be

  241. the God of all the families of Israel,

  242. and they'll be my people. That's good

  243. news.

  244. Now, for those who haven't been with us,

  245. the Jewish nations split in two,

  246. and the 10 northern tribes split off and

  247. went into total idolatry, worshiping

  248. Baal, doing all kinds of other stuff.

  249. The two southern tribes were called

  250. Judah and the northern tribes were

  251. called Israel.

  252. So it was a split just like in America

  253. we had our civil war but the south split

  254. from the north in our civil war. In

  255. theirs the north split from the south

  256. but the south was where Jerusalem was.

  257. In fact it's still there. Jerusalem is

  258. still there. South was where Jerusalem

  259. is and the south was where the temple

  260. and the palace was.

  261. So that's the background here. And the

  262. North had been split off for over a

  263. century. It's been a long time. And the

  264. North got in terrible idolatry, horrible

  265. idolatry.

  266. And God sent them into captivity with

  267. the Assyrians.

  268. Syrians came in, conquered them, took

  269. them all the way.

  270. And then the people down south didn't

  271. learn their lesson. They got into

  272. idolatry and God's getting ready to take

  273. them all the way to Babylon. So, the

  274. northern tribes ended up in Assyrian.

  275. Uh, and then the southern two tribes

  276. ended up in Babylon. They didn't take

  277. everybody, but they take most of

  278. everybody.

  279. And now Jeremiah is talking about all

  280. this stuff.

  281. And it's a promise about the future.

  282. At the same time, says the Lord, will I

  283. be a God of all the families of Israel.

  284. All the families of Israel. That means

  285. every family, every tribe. This is a

  286. future prophecy. This has not happened

  287. yet.

  288. This is future.

  289. But it's God's promise

  290. and they'll be my people.

  291. So, this is a promise that God's going

  292. to work among the Jewish nation at the

  293. end of history.

  294. Thus says the Lord, the people who were

  295. left of the sword found grace in the

  296. wilderness, even Israel, when I went to

  297. cause him to rest, the Lord appeared of

  298. old to me, saying, "Yay, I've loved thee

  299. with an everlasting love. Therefore,

  300. with loving kindness have I drawn thee."

  301. Loving kindness is a Hebrew word, has

  302. said. It means covenant loyalty.

  303. I love you and I'm loyal to you. You

  304. haven't been loyal to me. You've cheated

  305. on me with other gods. You've committed

  306. spiritual adultery. You've been

  307. unfaithful.

  308. But I'm I'm coming after you. And I'm I

  309. love you with everlasting love. God's

  310. got more love than we got sin.

  311. Isn't that good?

  312. >> God has more love than you have. God has

  313. more grace than you've got sin. Isn't

  314. that good?

  315. >> Yes.

  316. >> Praise God for that. I got a lot of sin.

  317. We all have. Thank God he's got more

  318. love and more grace than we have sin.

  319. And he said, I've loved you with an

  320. everlasting love. Therefore, with loving

  321. kindness, that's covenant loyalty, I'm

  322. going to be loyal to my vows to you,

  323. even though you weren't to me.

  324. And with loving kindness

  325. have I drawn me. That word loving

  326. kindness translates that Hebrew worded.

  327. Nobody knows how to translate it. It

  328. means covenant loyalty. I'm going to

  329. keep my word

  330. even though you don't.

  331. And again, I will build thee and you

  332. shall be built, oh virgin of Israel.

  333. They were anything but a virgin. They

  334. were spiritual adulterers worshiping all

  335. these other gods. They were so

  336. unfaithful to God. God's going to make

  337. them different than they are.

  338. Isn't that what the new birth is?

  339. God gives us a new heart.

  340. We still have our old sin nature, but we

  341. got a new one. We're not the same. I'm

  342. not the same I was before I was saved.

  343. You're not the same you were before you

  344. were saved. What happened? A miracle

  345. happened.

  346. Heaven came down and what happened?

  347. He filled our soul.

  348. Jesus Christ made us whole. I'll build

  349. thee and you'll be built, oh virgin of

  350. Israel. So calling him a virgin after

  351. he's called him adulterers for 30

  352. chapters. Obviously a work got done

  353. there. God's doing a repair job.

  354. You shall again be adorned with your

  355. timberalss and go forth in the dances of

  356. those who make Mary. Thou shalt yet

  357. plant vines on the mountains of Samaria,

  358. and the supplanters shall plant and

  359. shall eat them as common things. For

  360. there shall be a day that the watchmen

  361. upon Mount Ephraim shall cry, "Arise!

  362. Let's go up to Zion to the Lord our God.

  363. Zion is in Jerusalem."

  364. Now, ever since Jeroboam and and Rehab

  365. got into a squabble, the north and

  366. northern tribes split from the two

  367. southern. Now, you remember this in Old

  368. Testament history, they had a united

  369. monarchy, all 12 tribes. Saul was the

  370. first king. David was the second king.

  371. Solomon was the third king. Three kings

  372. over all 12 tribes. And then because of

  373. Solomon's spiritual adultery, uh uh they

  374. they split. God judged them. And the 10

  375. northern tribes split off of the two

  376. southern.

  377. And that was a terrible split all these

  378. years. Nothing has ever healed it. But

  379. God is God is now saying he's going to

  380. deal with all of that. And he says of to

  381. the 10 northern tribes, "You'll plant

  382. vines upon the mountains of Samaria. The

  383. planters shall plant and shall eat them

  384. as common things." Verse six. And I'm

  385. getting to my verse where I'm really

  386. going to get it. That there'll be a day

  387. that the watchmen on Mount Ephraim shall

  388. cry, "Arise, let's go to Zion in the

  389. Lord our God." They didn't do that ever

  390. since the split. Remember the king of

  391. the north, Jeroboam, said, "That's too

  392. far for you to go down there to

  393. Jerusalem to worship." And he built an

  394. idol in Bethl and in Dan. One way up in

  395. the north and one way up the south. You

  396. don't have to go that far. Just stay up

  397. here. And they did.

  398. Decades, decades, over hundred some

  399. years they did it.

  400. They weren't going down. In fact, they

  401. were fighting each other.

  402. They were split.

  403. And now God's telling them

  404. something completely different that must

  405. have stunned them. You're going to Zion.

  406. You're going to worship down there

  407. again. No more Bethl. No more Dan.

  408. Remember the gold the golden calf idol

  409. and Bethl. And the golden calf idol and

  410. Dan. Dan was way up in the north and and

  411. Bethl was right on the border. And so

  412. Jerobam did that so he wouldn't lose his

  413. people to the other tribes. They're

  414. going to go back to David. They're going

  415. to go back to the temple. I got to do

  416. something. He had a plot and they fell

  417. for it.

  418. So what does God say? You people are

  419. going to go back to Jerusalem for the

  420. first time in a very long time to

  421. worship.

  422. Now this hadn't happened yet.

  423. This is going to happen.

  424. In verse six, for there shall be a day

  425. that the watchmen on Mount Ephraim shall

  426. cry, arise, let us go up to Zion. They

  427. say up because you know Jerusalem's on a

  428. hill

  429. unto the Lord our God. For thus says the

  430. Lord, sing with gladness, O Jacob, and

  431. shout among the chief of the nations.

  432. Publish ye praise and say, Oh Lord, save

  433. thy people the remnant of Israel. The

  434. Israel is a name for the 10 northern

  435. tribes.

  436. Behold, I'll bring them from the north

  437. country and gather them from the

  438. farthest parts of the earth and with

  439. them the blind and the lame and the

  440. woman with child and her she who

  441. travails with child together. A great

  442. company will return here. This isn't

  443. talking about the people in northern

  444. Israel. This is talking about the Jews

  445. scattered all over from syria and all

  446. the countries.

  447. I'll bring them. He says in verse 9,

  448. "They shall come with weeping

  449. and with supplications

  450. will I lead them, and I'll cause them to

  451. walk by the rivers of the waters in a

  452. straight way in which they shall not

  453. stumble. For I'm a father to Israel, and

  454. Ephraim is my first born."

  455. Now, Ephraim was the biggest tribe in

  456. the north.

  457. And so, he stands for the whole group.

  458. Hear the word, O Lord, oh ye nations.

  459. declare it in the coast far off and say,

  460. "He who scattered Israel will gather him

  461. and keep him as a shepherd doth his

  462. flock." What's he talking about? He's

  463. talking about national resurrection from

  464. the dead.

  465. You know, the Bible is a big book on

  466. resurrection, isn't it? Jesus

  467. resurrection, our resurrection. Did you

  468. know there's going to be a political

  469. resurrection?

  470. The nation of Israel is scattered, gone.

  471. When the people were taken off the land,

  472. that was judgment from God.

  473. The people need and the land needs to go

  474. together. When the people are off the

  475. land, they have political death. When

  476. the people are back on the land, they

  477. got political life.

  478. And so, just like when you die, your

  479. soul leaves your body. There's a

  480. separation between your impetaterial

  481. part and your material part. Uh, and uh,

  482. when the political death is when the

  483. people were taken off the land, God told

  484. him he would do it and he finally did

  485. it. Now he says, "I'm going to take I'm

  486. going to bring him back."

  487. He's promised. This is a political

  488. resurrection.

  489. That's exciting to me. What is the new

  490. birth? It's a spiritual resurrection.

  491. You're dead and you're born again. You

  492. hath he quickened who were dead in

  493. trespasses and sins.

  494. So, I've already got a spiritual

  495. resurrection.

  496. God's already given me life inside. The

  497. day I was saved, I was dead. That's what

  498. Ephesians 2 says. We were dead in

  499. trespasses and sins.

  500. We were graveyard dead in the sense that

  501. we were separated from God. And but the

  502. day you got you were born again, God

  503. gave you life, spiritual life. That's

  504. called the new birth. It's called the

  505. new creation. If anyone's in Christ,

  506. he's a new creation. and all things are

  507. uh uh become new.

  508. And so there there's the there's

  509. personal resurrection uh physical

  510. resurrection, there's spiritual

  511. resurrection, and there's national

  512. resurrection. And that's what this is

  513. talking about. A a dead nation that's

  514. people are separated from their land are

  515. coming back. They're coming back and

  516. God's bringing them back.

  517. So, let's keep going a little bit as we

  518. work through this. I'm g I'm going

  519. working down to where we're going to be.

  520. Verse 10. Hear the word of the Lord, oh

  521. ye nations, declared in the coast far

  522. off. He who scattered Israel will gather

  523. him and keep him as the shepherd does

  524. his flock. For the Lord hath redeemed

  525. Jacob and ransomed him. He's not talking

  526. Jacob the man. He's talking about the

  527. people, the nation. and ransomed him

  528. from the hand of him who was stronger

  529. than he. Therefore, they shall come and

  530. sing in the height of Zion. So the

  531. northern Israelites are going to be for

  532. the first time in hundreds of years

  533. singing and worshiping in Jerusalem and

  534. shall flow together to the goodness of

  535. the Lord, for the grain, the wine, the

  536. oil, for the young of the flock and the

  537. herd, and their soul shall be like a

  538. watered garden and they shall not sorrow

  539. anymore.

  540. You say, "What does this have to do with

  541. me?"

  542. I can see how they get excited.

  543. The God who loves Israel with an

  544. everlasting love as a nation and all the

  545. bad things they've done loves you and

  546. me.

  547. How many people

  548. that used to be real close to us said,

  549. "I'm not with you because we maybe did

  550. one bad thing or we said one bad thing.

  551. I'm out of here. You're out of my life.

  552. God still loves the Jewish people

  553. even after they crucified Jesus.

  554. So any that hadn't happened yet, but he

  555. still loves them. And so notice what it

  556. says in verse 15. Thus says the Lord, a

  557. voice was heard in Rama. Rama is five

  558. miles from Bethlehem. And Rama, excuse

  559. me, from Jerusalem. And Rama is was the

  560. staging area for the exile. When the Bab

  561. when the neoablonian armies came in,

  562. they took all the people out of

  563. Jerusalem and they gathered them

  564. together in Rama. Kind of like the Nazis

  565. would do to staging area to put you on

  566. the train to go to the furnaces and they

  567. would they all they gathered the people,

  568. men, women, and children. They put them

  569. in Rama and that's where they started

  570. marching them in chains to Babylon a

  571. thousand miles away. Took them out of

  572. the country.

  573. Thus says the Lord. A v voice was heard

  574. in Rama. Lamentation and bitter weeping.

  575. Rachel weeping for her children,

  576. refusing to be comforted for her

  577. children because they're not.

  578. Now, we know that verse. We read that at

  579. Christmas in Matthew's gospel when Herod

  580. the Great killed all the babies in

  581. Bethlehem, right? Matthew refers to this

  582. very thing.

  583. And you say, "Well, wait a minute.

  584. Rachel, she died long time before this.

  585. She's a thousand years in the grave."

  586. Yeah. Do you remember Rachel's death?

  587. In fact, do you remember Rachel's life?

  588. Who did Rachel

  589. who who um what children did Rachel

  590. have?

  591. Who remember they got in the baby wars?

  592. Who could have the most babies? Leah and

  593. Rachel. and Rachel lost.

  594. And what?

  595. >> Yeah, Benjamin was one of them.

  596. >> And Joseph was another. Benjamin and

  597. Joseph. That was the two. And guess

  598. what?

  599. Benjamin is the northern tribe of Judah.

  600. And Joseph got married to an Egyptian

  601. when he was down there. And there were

  602. two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim, that

  603. came from Joseph. And Ephraim is a the

  604. Ephraim tribe is a descendant from

  605. Joseph. Therefore, a descendant of

  606. Rachel.

  607. So, this is this is very interesting.

  608. It's not talking about the individuals.

  609. It's talking about all the people that

  610. came to Rachel. Rachel's crying because

  611. all of her kids are all her descendants,

  612. all of the people she's an ancestor for

  613. are going to Babylon.

  614. They're being taken away.

  615. And whenever Jews are killed, whether

  616. it's the Benjamites in the south or the

  617. uh the Israelites in the north, Rachel's

  618. crying for her children cuz they're not.

  619. That's it's it's a poetic it's a poetic

  620. thing.

  621. And she's weeping for her children and

  622. refused to be comforted for children

  623. because they're not. By the way, Rachel

  624. Ston's near there, too.

  625. Thus says the Lord, "Restrain the voice

  626. from weeping and the eyes from tears.

  627. For thy work will be rewarded, says the

  628. Lord, and they'll come again from the

  629. land of the enemy." Why is Rachel upset?

  630. Because she sacrificed her life. She

  631. died in childbirth. She gave her life so

  632. she could have babies.

  633. And then

  634. all the ones through Joseph are in

  635. captivity.

  636. And the ones through Benjamin are going

  637. into captivity. She's got a lot to cry

  638. about.

  639. You know, a lot of our life success

  640. comes from our children

  641. because we pour our lives into them

  642. so hopefully they can do bigger things

  643. than we ever did. I read something

  644. online and I thought it was interesting.

  645. He was talking to young men and this

  646. person said, "The only man in the world

  647. that wants you to be better than him is

  648. your father."

  649. Isn't that what a father wants from his

  650. kids? He wants it his kids to be better

  651. than him, to do more than him, to be

  652. more successful than him. A good mother

  653. and a good father want that for their

  654. kids, right?

  655. Because if our life is bound up in their

  656. life and what they accomplish,

  657. we get some credit for we get some

  658. because we put them, we brought them

  659. into the world. We raised them.

  660. And so it's not just us. It's what our

  661. children do that's important.

  662. That's one of the reasons I love working

  663. in Athens is because we have a lot of

  664. people that coming and going. Athens is

  665. a is a town of a revolving door. People

  666. come, people go. That's a terrible place

  667. to have a church if you want a big mega

  668. church, but it's a good place if you

  669. want to if you want to reach people from

  670. all over, all over the country, all over

  671. the world. They come and go. They come

  672. and go. And and so I can have a we can

  673. have a smaller church with a bigger

  674. impact.

  675. Every one of you have heard me say this.

  676. I wanted to go to China as a missionary

  677. or Taiwan or we didn't have China. China

  678. wasn't open when I was thinking about

  679. this

  680. or Hong Kong back in the day.

  681. And that's was my thinking. I'll be a

  682. pastor in Athens 5 years and maybe I'll

  683. go to the mission field. Well, I've been

  684. here for 50 years and I'm not to the

  685. mission field yet. God brought the

  686. mission field to me. And my wife and I

  687. have often said we've done more for the

  688. Lord than if we were there.

  689. if when we look back on it

  690. and there's some of you that are doing

  691. Asian Bible studies uh that God's using

  692. you here even though you're not there.

  693. God's ways are not our ways. His

  694. thoughts aren't our thoughts. He puts

  695. something in our mind on something in

  696. our heart and then he does it

  697. differently than we think. And that's

  698. okay, right? We're not driving.

  699. God's driving.

  700. God's not our co-pilot.

  701. That's a terrible statement. God is my

  702. co-pilot. God's not the co-pilot. He's

  703. the one that's a pilot. He's driving.

  704. You're along for the ride. You're not

  705. even the co-pilot.

  706. So Jeremiah is talking about these big

  707. issues, national and international

  708. issues and uh talking about

  709. this is prophet po pro po pro po pro po

  710. pro po pro po pro po pro po pro po pro po pro po po po po po po po po po po po

  711. po po po po po po po po poetic as well

  712. as prophetic.

  713. So they said, "Dry your tears, Rachel.

  714. Dry those tears. Wipe those tears away.

  715. Wipe those tears away. All you people

  716. that are disappointed in your children

  717. and grandchildren, great grandchildren,

  718. great grand great great grandchildren.

  719. There's a future and you've been part of

  720. it. You've been part of it.

  721. Without you, they wouldn't be here.

  722. And so, and you notice what he says in

  723. verse 17. There is hope in thine end.

  724. Now, this talk about the nation of

  725. Israel. There's hope in thy end. Well,

  726. listen. It's not going to be United

  727. States that saves Israel.

  728. It's not.

  729. It'll be God.

  730. The Jews were always latching on to the

  731. Egyptians or somebody else to save them

  732. from the Babylonians, from the

  733. Assyrians, making covenants with this

  734. one, that one, and it always fell apart.

  735. And it'll fall apart with America, too.

  736. We'll we'll turn on them at some point.

  737. It we have to because everybody turns on

  738. them in the future. They're all by

  739. theirel. It's just them and God.

  740. And that's what the prophecies talk

  741. about.

  742. But anyway,

  743. notice what it says in verse 17. And

  744. there is hope in thy end, says the Lord,

  745. that thy children shall come again to

  746. their own border, and have I've surely

  747. heard Ephraim bemoning himself thus.

  748. Thou hast chastened me, and I was

  749. chastened. That talk about a whole

  750. nation of Jews, the 10 tribes. You've

  751. corrected me. We've been corrected.

  752. Took 2,000 some years to do it.

  753. You've corrected me and I've been

  754. corrected like a bull unaccustomed to

  755. the yoke. Turn me back and I'll be

  756. restored for you are the Lord my God.

  757. There is a time at the end of history

  758. when the Jews who don't believe in

  759. Christ will believe in Christ. Bible

  760. promises that

  761. and uh this is referring to some of

  762. those things in verse 19. And surely

  763. after I was turned away, I repented. And

  764. after I was instructed, I smoked my

  765. thigh. I was ashamed, even confounded

  766. because you because I did bear the

  767. reproach of my youth. Here are people

  768. repenting. I wish I didn't. I wish we

  769. hadn't lived the way we lived. I wish

  770. we'd have done differently, but we

  771. didn't. Don't you wish that? I tell you,

  772. I wish my teen years were a little

  773. better than they were. No, a lot better

  774. than they were.

  775. You don't get them back, do you?

  776. My high school class has a 10

  777. three-month reunion and I go to it, but

  778. I can't make up for the years when I

  779. didn't have a good testimony.

  780. Can't rewind the clock. Can't rewind.

  781. But I can go and try to do better now.

  782. And so can you.

  783. But in verse 20, is Ephraim my dear son?

  784. Is he a pleasant child? For since I

  785. spoke against him, I do earnestly

  786. remember him still. Therefore, my heart

  787. is troubled for him. I'll surely have

  788. mercy on him, says the Lord.

  789. Set thee up way marks, make thee high

  790. heap. Set your heart toward the highway.

  791. Even the way which you went, you'll turn

  792. again, oh virgin of Israel, he calls her

  793. a virgin again. Turn again to these thy

  794. cities. How long will you go about, oh,

  795. you backsliding daughter? For the Lord

  796. has created a new thing

  797. on the earth. A woman will compass a

  798. man. That's a really strange prophecy.

  799. A lot of people thought this was a

  800. prophecy of the virgin birth and it

  801. might be so, but many don't think that

  802. that's the best view now. But the whole

  803. point here is whatever it means and I

  804. think most there's many interpretations

  805. it's some say it's a woman's going to

  806. I'm going to empower you to fight so bad

  807. the women are going to fight with the

  808. men and the women will be protecting the

  809. men. It'll be that good.

  810. I don't know about that.

  811. But either way, God's going to come

  812. through for this nation.

  813. He's coming through. I'm not worried

  814. about Iran. I'm not worried about all

  815. these people say they want to kill the

  816. Jews.

  817. They're going to find out they're

  818. fighting God. And that that's not a good

  819. thing to do.

  820. Now,

  821. we're we're slowly coming to the good

  822. part. But look in verse 23. Thus says

  823. the Lord of armies, the Lord of hosts,

  824. the God of Israel, as yet they shall use

  825. this speech in the land of Judah and in

  826. its cities when I bring again their

  827. captivity. In other words, now we're

  828. bringing down the south people in the

  829. south as well as the people in the

  830. north. The Lord bless thee, o habitation

  831. of justice and mountain of holiness, and

  832. there shall dwell in Judah himself

  833. itself and in all its cities together

  834. farmers who will go forth with flocks.

  835. For I filled full the weary soul, and

  836. I've replenished every sorrowful soul.

  837. Upon this I awakened, and beheld, my

  838. sleep was sweet to me. That ends the

  839. first part.

  840. So apparently this was a revelation

  841. given in a dream.

  842. Now I got to slip ahead to the next part

  843. because this is where communion comes

  844. in.

  845. I'm doing that. We're going to really

  846. develop this next week. Please slip with

  847. me to the next part. Verse 27. Behold,

  848. the days come, says the Lord, I'll sew

  849. the house of Israel, that's the north,

  850. and the house of Judah, that's the

  851. south, with the seed of man and with the

  852. seed of beast. It'll come to pass that

  853. as I've watched over them to pluck them

  854. up and break them down, to throw them

  855. down and destroy and afflict, so I'll

  856. watch over them to build and to plant,

  857. says the Lord. Other words, I sent them

  858. both into exile.

  859. Now I'm bringing them both back.

  860. I judged them for their idolatry, their

  861. unfaithfulness. Now I'm bringing them

  862. back.

  863. In those days they shall say no more.

  864. The fathers have eaten sour grapes and

  865. the children's teeth are set on edge.

  866. But every man will die for his own

  867. iniquity. Every man eats the sour grapes

  868. his teeth shall be set on age. Here it

  869. is. Behold, the days come, says the

  870. Lord, I will make a new covenant

  871. with the house of Israel and with the

  872. house of Judah. They're both all 12

  873. tribes. The house of Israel, 10 tribes,

  874. and the house of Judah. I'm making a new

  875. covenant. A this a new deal. You say,

  876. "Well, what was the old covenant?" The

  877. old covenant was the ten commandments.

  878. The old covenant was given right after

  879. God brought him out of Egypt. That was

  880. the old covenant.

  881. But the old covenant says, "You got to

  882. obey me or I'll take you out of the

  883. land." Well, they blew that. So, he took

  884. them out. So, the new covenant is an

  885. improvement over the old covenant.

  886. You couldn't do this. I gave you

  887. centuries to do it. You kept blowing it.

  888. Now, I'm going to do this. A new

  889. covenant. A covenant is a legal

  890. agreement. A covenant is where God binds

  891. himself to do something.

  892. And he says in verse 32, "Not according

  893. to the covenant I made with their

  894. fathers in the day that I took them by

  895. the hand to bring them out of the land

  896. of Egypt." Not like that one.

  897. That was the ten commandments.

  898. They broke them all

  899. which my covenant they broke, although I

  900. was a husband to them. But this shall be

  901. the covenant I'll make with the house of

  902. Israel after those days. I'll put my law

  903. in their inward parts. Now listen to

  904. this. You know what that is? That's

  905. where God changes your heart and your

  906. heart has an affinity for his word.

  907. You love God's law. You have you're in

  908. this comes from the inside out.

  909. You have a new heart for God. You have a

  910. new heart. You have a new love for God.

  911. You have a new love for your neighbor.

  912. You have all that. It's all there. It's

  913. a It's part of the new birth. And I'll

  914. put my law in their inward parts and

  915. write it in their hearts and will be

  916. their God and they'll be my people.

  917. Don't say God's done with the Jew. This

  918. says he's not. Now, they're done with

  919. God. They don't believe Jesus was God.

  920. They crucified him, most of them. But

  921. God's not done with them.

  922. And I'll teach no more every man his

  923. neighbor, every man his brother, saying,

  924. "Know the Lord." For they'll all know

  925. me, from the least of them to the

  926. greatest, says the Lord. For I'll

  927. forgive their iniquity, and I'll

  928. remember their sin no more. Now, we will

  929. get into this. You will have a new heart

  930. for God, and your sins are all forgiven.

  931. And thus says the Lord, who gives the

  932. sun for a light by day, and the

  933. ordinance of the moon and stars for

  934. light by night, who drives the sea with

  935. its waves roar. The Lord of hosts is his

  936. name. If those ordinances depart before

  937. me, says the Lord, then the seed of

  938. Israel shall cease from being a nation

  939. before me forever. In other words, the

  940. only way I'm going with the Jews if the

  941. sun stops shining and the moon stops

  942. reflecting that.

  943. Moon and the sun got to be out of a job

  944. before they're out.

  945. Thus says the Lord, if heaven above can

  946. be measured, Anybody want to try that?

  947. That's that's going clear into outer

  948. space, out of the universe. If heaven

  949. above can be measured and the

  950. foundations of the earth searched out,

  951. anybody want to try that? I will cast

  952. off all the seed of Israel for all that

  953. they've done, says the Lord. In other

  954. words, I'm not going to do it.

  955. Now, many people say God's done with the

  956. Jew. God says, "I'm not Jew."

  957. Now, today, the Jewish people that are

  958. not Christians, they're as lost as

  959. anybody else. But God's going to do a

  960. work in their heart, and it's going to

  961. involve forgiveness and a knowledge of

  962. God. And guess what? That's what you got

  963. when you got saved.

  964. We get in on this.

  965. We get in on this. We're Gentiles. We're

  966. not Jews, but we get in on it. Well, how

  967. am I in on this? I'm not a Jew. This is

  968. promised to the Jew. You're in it

  969. because you're related

  970. to the Jewish Messiah, Jesus Christ.

  971. He's your husband.

  972. He's your spiritual husband. We are all

  973. the church is married to Christ

  974. and we're one with him. And since he's

  975. in on this, we get in on it because of

  976. our relationship with him ahead of time.

  977. This is an amazing thing. You said,

  978. "Pastor, you're talking out of your

  979. head. What? What are you talking about?

  980. The night before Jesus was betrayed, he

  981. took bread."

  982. Remember that

  983. a Passover meal, celebrating the

  984. Passover. And the Passover was given to

  985. celebrate the coming of the Jews out of

  986. Egypt. Once a year, they'd take the

  987. blood of the Passover, put it on the

  988. door, and eat the Passover meal. And it

  989. was at the Passover meal the night

  990. before Jesus died. The very night he was

  991. arrested. He took Passover wine,

  992. Passover bread, and he said, "This is my

  993. body which is broken for you. This do in

  994. remembrance of me. This is the blood of

  995. the new covenant." That's what he said.

  996. This is the blood of the new covenant.

  997. He used that terminology.

  998. So he applied to his followers and

  999. therefore the ones who follow the

  1000. followers, the church

1001. what Israel is going to get in the

1002. future. We get it ahead of time.

1003. Now that's kind of interesting.

1004. Turn with me to the New Testament. I'm

1005. going to show you what I'm talking

  1006. about. 1 Corinthians 11. We're almost

  1007. done tonight.

  1008. This is Paul's account

  1009. of the Lord's table.

  1010. Paul's account

  1011. of the Lord's table.

  1012. He says this

  1013. in verse 23.

  1014. 1 Corinthians 11:23.

    1 Corinthians 11:23

1015. For I've received of the Lord that which

1016. also I delivered to you, that the Lord

1017. Jesus the same night in which he was

  1018. betrayed, took bread,

1019. and when he given thanks, he broke it

1020. and said, "Take, eat. This is my body

1021. which is broken for you. This do in

  1022. remembrance of me."

1023. And that's what we're going to do

1024. tonight. We're going to take the bread

  1025. and remember

1026. the body of the Lord Jesus was broken

  1027. for us.

1028. And after the same manner also he took

1029. the cup when he slept, saying, "This cup

  1030. is what?"

  1031. The new testament

  1032. in my blood.

1033. This do as often as you drink it in

1034. remembrance of me. For as often as you

1035. eat this bread and drink this cup, you

1036. do show forth or proclaim the Lord's

  1037. death till he come.

1038. Now, this is where we come in and this

1039. is what we're going to be. We are

1040. celebrating because we get in on the new

1041. covenant early. We don't replace the

1042. Jews and we just get in on the covenant

1043. early because of our relationship to the

1044. one who made the covenant.

1045. And they didn't deserve it. And we

1046. Gentiles certainly don't deserve it.

1047. What do you think your ancestors were

1048. doing? I know what mine were doing. They

1049. the Irish, they were worshiping idols in

  1050. Ireland. And

1051. my northern European ancestors were

  1052. worshiping idols up there.

1053. And my German ancestors were worshiping

  1054. idols there.

1055. They didn't know God either.

1056. And so what God is doing with what Jesus

1057. is doing and is in the church age is

  1058. beginning, he's he's letting the church

1059. know you're in on this ahead of time.

1060. I will develop this more for you next

1061. time, but tonight I just want us to stop

1062. here and just rejoice. I'm getting in on

1063. something I had nothing no hope of ever

  1064. being in.

1065. I was a gentile. I had no hope in us

1066. without God in the world. And that

1067. wasn't just me. It was everybody else.

1068. And then Jesus came along and died for

1069. my sins and rose again and sent the

1070. gospel into all the world. Preached the

  1071. gospel to every nation.

1072. And Jesus did what the Jews could never

1073. do. He kept God's law. He never broke

1074. any of the ten commandments.

1075. He kept them all. He's the only one that

1076. ever has. Only one person's ever kept

1077. the ten commandments. It's Jesus. But

1078. don't tell me I'm going to I ask people,

1079. "You going to heaven?" Yeah, I keep the

1080. ten commandments. No, you don't. You

  1081. You're fooling yourself. You haven't

1082. kept any of them. And neither have I.

1083. Not the way God interprets it. Take the

1084. 10 and shoot them down to two like Jesus

1085. does. The first of the ten commandments

1086. is love God with all your heart, all

1087. your soul, and all your might. Oh, I

1088. guess I haven't done that. Not every

1089. day. Some days. And your neighbor as

  1090. yourself. I know I haven't done that.

1091. So the first is the first five and the

1092. other is the next five

1093. because the first commandments deal with

1094. our relationship with God and the second

1095. deal with our relationship with each

1096. other. So Jesus is doing something very

1097. precious here and Paul is doing

1098. something very precious here and Paul's

1099. not the only one. The book of Hebrews

    Hebrews 8 chapter mention

1100. chapter 8 and nine are filled with this

1101. and um uh it's very clear here that

1102. we're in on something we could never

1103. imagine. You know, when God did this,

1104. I'm sure all the people of the tribes of

1105. tribe of Judah and Benjamin thought,

1106. "Wow, this is fantastic." And then God

1107. said, "Oh, by the way, the 10 northern

1108. tribes are in ON THIS, TOO." WHAT? Not

1109. those people. We've been fighting those

  1110. people. They're idolattors. They

1111. worship. They were under King Ahab. They

  1112. had they're they're evil people up

1113. there. No, they're in on it, too.

  1114. And then the surprise,

  1115. Gentiles.

  1116. I'm Jews. I thought we were something. I

1117. thought we had an exclusive thing with

1118. God. Well, you got something special.

1119. But in the church, there's no Jew or

1120. Greek, bond or free, male or female.

1121. And so God is doing something ahead of

1122. time now among the gentile people and we

1123. get in on it because of our relationship

  1124. with the Lord.

1125. Charles Fineberg said the dominant

1126. themes of this chapter are the

1127. restoration of God's people and the new

  1128. covenant.

1129. And the new covenant. Another one said,

1130. "The glories of the restored nation of

1131. Israel and Judah is is the theme of this

  1132. chapter."

1133. And what a precious thing that is. So

1134. Jeremiah sees a united people worshiping

1135. the Lord in Jerusalem. This passage is

1136. precious and it represents according to

1137. one writer the deepest insights in all

1138. prophetic literature. This is deep

  1139. stuff.

1140. You can't keep the law, can you? Nope.

1141. Then I'll write it in your heart.

1142. Put it on the inside out. That's what

1143. Christianity is. Inside out religion.

1144. I'm going to put it in your heart so you

1145. have a heart affinity for it.

1146. So you're not just going through the

  1147. motions outwardly, but there's a heart

  1148. affinity.

1149. God knows what's in the heart. He know

1150. God. The Lord knows the heart and the

1151. heart's not too pretty. Mine isn't easy

1152. as yours. We needed a new heart. We need

1153. a heart transplant. And that's what God

  1154. does.

1155. So all of this is really kind of

  1156. shocking and

  1157. it's a pray I love that stuff about

1158. Rachel weeping and stop weeping crying.

1159. You got you got a future because your

  1160. descendants have a future

1161. and you you contributed to the program

1162. of God and the purposes of God. You

1163. know, these are wonderful things to

  1164. think about

1165. and they're bigger than we can grasp. By

1166. the way, the prophet Ezekiel said the

1167. same thing. He put Israel and Judah here

1168. and he had two sticks. He wrote Israel

1169. on one and Judah on the other. And then

1170. he had the two sticks becoming one.

  1171. That's Ezekiel 23.

1172. And uh these two st excuse me, Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 37:15–24

  1173. 37 verse 15 to 24.

1174. So tonight, we're going to celebrate the

  1175. Lord's supper.

1176. And I am so glad for the grace of God

1177. that blotss out all the failures of the

  1178. past,

1179. not only for the Jewish people,

  1180. but for Bill Hixon

  1181. and for you.

  1182. Um,

1183. this is a stunning, stunning thing that

  1184. we're looking at.

1185. And tonight, we're going to celebrate

1186. it. The Lord's Supper is a celebration.

  1187. It's a celebration of Jesus. It's a

1188. celebration of who he is and what he's

1189. done. Because we don't deserve to be in

  1190. on this.

  1191. We don't. We're not We're not taking the

  1192. Lord's supper because we think we're

1193. better than other people. We're not

  1194. saying we're Christians because we're

  1195. better.

1196. We may have been worse. Probably were.

  1197. But God's done a change. And that's what

1198. the new birth is. If you've been born

1199. again, if you if God has worked in your

1200. heart, we invite you to come and take

1201. the Lord's supper with us tonight. Our

1202. practice here is to pass the bread, wait

1203. for one another, and take together. If

1204. you've not yet trusted Christ as your

1205. savior, just please let the bread pass.

1206. We're not going to judge you. We're not

1207. interested in whether you're a member of

1208. our church, and you don't have to be a

1209. member to take the Lord's supper. But if

1210. you feel that that's something you want

1211. to do tonight, and you know the Lord,

1212. please join us. We'll pass the bread,

1213. wait for one another, and we'll eat

1214. together. And then we'll pass the cup,

1215. wait for one another, and drink

1216. together. And the bread represents our

  1217. Lord's body.

1218. The the cup rep the cup represents his

1219. blood. We are celebrating his death till

  1220. he come.

1221. We are doing it publicly because we're

1222. not ashamed. Our faith is in that. The

1223. eating and drinking symbolizes our faith

1224. and our appropriation of what he did at

1225. the cross. And we do it public because

  1226. you know what

1227. Paul said? Ass often as you eat this

1228. bread and drink this cup, you do

1229. proclaim or preach his death till he

  1230. come.

1231. So everybody that takes the Lord's

1232. supper is going to have a sermon

  1233. tonight.

  1234. You're preaching a sermon. I'm preaching

1235. a sermon. When we take the bread and we

1236. take the cup, we are telling everybody,

  1237. "I'm a sinner. I can't get to heaven by

1238. being good. I've already blown it. Jesus

1239. died for me. He rose again. I'm trusting

1240. his death to get me into heaven. I'm not

1241. trusting my good works. I'm trusting his

  1242. work. You're preaching that. That's what

  1243. First Corinthians says. You're

  1244. proclaiming that. It's a nonverbal

  1245. sermon.

1246. And so, it's kind of a sacred time. But

1247. some people say, you know, I haven't had

1248. a very good week. I don't have my sins

1249. confessed up. Well, you better do that

1250. before you take the Lord's supper. But

1251. if you if you aren't quite caught up or

1252. you're not you you you're not sure if

1253. you're saved or not, just let the bread

1254. come to pass. We're not going to judge

  1255. you. That's God's job.

1256. But we are going to celebrate together.

1257. And if you're not yet a Christian, maybe

1258. seeing others take the bread and the cup

1259. will preach to you louder than the

1260. sermon. You know, when I was a kid, you

1261. know what preached to me about the fact

  1262. I wasn't a Christian more than to preach

  1263. a sermon?

1264. when I had to let the bread and the cup

1265. go by because I wasn't saved and I knew

  1266. it.

  1267. I didn't get saved till I was 13.

1268. I was raised in the church

1269. and I'm glad I was. But, you know, every

1270. time that cup went by and I didn't take

1271. it, it kind of hit me. I need to trust

  1272. Jesus.

1273. That that was a better sermon than the

1274. preacher ever preached every time the

1275. bread went by. So, don't be ashamed of

1276. that. We're not going to judge you. This

1277. is between you and God and uh it

1278. everybody here and you don't have you

1279. don't have to uh uh worry about that

  1280. from us.

1281. But we are coming to honor our Lord and

  1282. celebrate his dead.

1283. Father, we thank you for the time we

  1284. spent tonight.

  1285. Jeremiah's a hard book. There's nothing

  1286. easy about it.

1287. He had a hard job. Everybody hated him

1288. and uh wanted to kill him. Want threw

  1289. him in a sistern like a prison. We're

1290. going to do that. We'll see that very

1291. soon. But what a wonderful privilege he

1292. had to give the message of the new

1293. covenant ahead of time, hundreds of

  1294. years before Jesus came.

  1295. It's in the Bible.

1296. And as we take the bread and the cup, we

  1297. look back

1298. not now to Jeremiah, but to Jesus

1299. and his death on the cross. He took our

1300. hell. He suffered our our hellfire.

1301. He was separated from God on the cross.

1302. He died for our sins. How can we not

1303. love him? How can we not rejoice in him?

1304. And so we take the bread and the cup

1305. with joy tonight in Jesus name. Amen.

  1306. >> Amen.

1307. >> Oh Lord, as we go from this place

  1308. loving you more,

  1309. trusting you more.

1310. May the power of your love and the light

1311. of your word shine to a sin darkened

1312. world as we go from this place.
