  1. It's such a joy to worship with you all each morning.

  2. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Sean.

  3. I'm one of the pastors of Trinity Kings Church,

  4. and it's my privilege to preach God's word to you this morning.

  5. Please turn with me to Revelation chapter 14, verses 6 to 20.

    Revelation 14:6–20

  6. We've been in this passage.

  7. We've been in the book of Revelation since the winter.

  8. And we are in chapter 14, verses 6 to 20.

  9. I have the grave task this morning of preaching the passage that Pastor and Theologian D.A. Carson calls

  10. the most horrific passage on hell in the whole Bible.

  11. But God's word includes sobering passages like this because God knows that we need to sober up from the wine of sin.

  12. Because God knows that we need a healthy dose of eternal reality check.

  13. Though hell might be an inconvenient truth that we might wish to ignore,

  14. and Jesus spoke of it repeatedly throughout the Gospels.

  15. And it's dangerous for us to ignore.

  16. So in Revelation chapter 14, verses 6 to 20,

    Revelation 14:6–20

  17. we pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  18. Heavenly Father,

  19. give me grace this morning

  20. to preach the horrors of hell

  21. that conveys

  22. your love

  23. and justice,

  24. your worthiness

  25. and glory

  26. and your mercy.

  27. As we

  28. humble ourselves before your word,

  29. please, God,

  30. make us sober-minded people

  31. with their eyes set on eternity

  32. so that we might live in this life

  33. in a manner that is pleasing to you.

  34. In Jesus' name,

  35. we pray.

  36. Amen.

  37. If you are able,

  38. please stand and join us for the reading of God's word

  39. from Revelation chapter 14,

    Revelation 14 chapter mention

  40. 6 to 20.

  41. Amen.

  42. Then I saw another angel

  43. flying directly overhead

  44. with an eternal gospel

  45. proclaimed to those who dwell on earth,

  46. to every nation

  47. and tribe

  48. and language

  49. and people.

  50. And he said with a loud voice,

  51. Fear God

  52. and give Him glory

  53. because

  54. the hour of His judgment

  55. has come

  56. and worship Him

  57. who made heaven and earth

  58. the sea

  59. and the springs of wire.

  60. Another angel,

  61. a second,

  62. followed,

  63. saying,

  64. Fallen,

  65. fallen is Babylon the great,

  66. she who made all nations

  67. drink the wine

  68. of the passion

  69. of her sexual immorality.

  70. And another angel,

  71. a third,

  72. followed them,

  73. saying with a loud voice,

  74. If anyone worships the beast

  75. and its image

  76. and receives a mark

  77. on his forehead

  78. or on his hand,

  79. he also will drink

  80. the wine

  81. of God's wrath,

  82. pour full strength

  83. into the cup

  84. of his anger,

  85. and he will be tormented

  86. with fire and sulfur

  87. in the presence

  88. of the holy angels

  89. and in the presence

  90. of the Lamb.

  91. And the smoke

  92. of their torment

  93. goes up forever

  94. and ever,

  95. and they have no rest,

  96. day or night,

  97. these worshipers

  98. of the beast

  99. and its image

  100. and whoever receives

  101. the mark of its name.

  102. Here is a call

  103. for the endurance

  104. of the saints,

  105. those who keep

  106. the commandments

  107. of God

  108. and their faith

  109. in Jesus.

  110. And I heard a voice

  111. from heaven

  112. saying,

  113. Write this,

  114. Blessed are the dead

  115. who die in the Lord

  116. from now on.

  117. Blessed indeed,

  118. says the Spirit,

  119. that they may rest

  120. from their labors,

  121. for their deeds

  122. follow them.

  123. then I looked,

  124. and behold,

  125. a white cloud

  126. and seated on the cloud

  127. one like a son of man

  128. with a golden crown

  129. on his head

  130. and a sharp sickle

  131. in his hand.

  132. And another angel

  133. came out of the temple

  134. calling with a loud voice

  135. to him who sat

  136. on the cloud,

  137. Put in your sickle

  138. and reap,

  139. for the hour to reap

  140. has come,

  141. for the harvest

  142. of the earth

  143. is fully ripe.

  144. So he who sat

  145. on the cloud

  146. swung his sickle

  147. across the earth,

  148. and the earth

  149. was reaped.

  150. Then another angel

  151. came out of the temple

  152. in heaven,

  153. and he too

  154. had a sharp sickle.

  155. And another angel

  156. came out from the altar,

  157. the angel who has

  158. authority over the fire,

  159. and he called

  160. with a loud voice

  161. to the one

  162. who had the sharp sickle,

  163. Put in your sickle

  164. and gather the clusters

  165. from the vine of the earth,

  166. for its grapes

  167. are ripe.

  168. So the angel

  169. swung his sickle

  170. across the earth

  171. and gathered

  172. the grape harvest

  173. of the earth,

  174. and threw it

  175. into the great

  176. winepress

  177. of the wrath

  178. of God.

  179. And the winepress

  180. was trodden

  181. outside the city,

  182. and blood

  183. flowed from the winepress,

  184. as high as a horse's bridle,

  185. for 1600 stadia.

  186. This is God's

  187. holy and authoritative word.

  188. Please be seated.

  189. 61 million people

  190. are estimated

  191. to have died

  192. last year

  193. in 2023.

  194. That's approximately

  195. 5 million deaths

  196. monthly,

  197. 167,

  198. 123 deaths

  199. daily,

  200. and 6,963

  201. deaths

  202. hourly,

  203. 116 deaths

  204. every minute,

  205. and two deaths

  206. every second.

  207. just now,

  208. two people

  209. went to either

  210. heaven or hell.

  211. And two more.

  212. And two more.

  213. Yesterday,

  214. over 167,000 people

  215. went to either

  216. heaven or hell.

  217. We often forget

  218. that death

  219. is coming

  220. for us all.

  221. We lather on

  222. anti-aging creams

  223. to hide

  224. the appearance

  225. of aging.

  226. I'm not saying

  227. that's wrong

  228. for you to do.

  229. I'm just saying

  230. that's what we tend

  231. to do.

  232. We run on treadmills

  233. and ellipticals

  234. and eat fish oils

  235. and turmeric

  236. to improve our health

  237. and extend

  238. our lives.

  239. Our society

  240. seeks,

  241. at all costs,

  242. to alleviate pain

  243. and avoid death

  244. for as long

  245. as possible

  246. because ultimately

  247. he doesn't want

  248. to reckon

  249. with death

  250. and what lies after.

  251. But it would be

  252. spiritually helpful

  253. for us to think

  254. about the inevitability

  255. of death

  256. and the eternal

  257. destinies of heaven

  258. and hell

  259. more often.

  260. Moses' prayer

  261. is recorded

  262. in Psalm 90.

  263. For all our days

  264. pass away

  265. under your wrath.

  266. we bring our ears

  267. to an end

  268. like a sigh.

  269. The years

  270. of our life

  271. are 70

  272. or even by reason

  273. of strength

  274. 80.

  275. So teach us

  276. to number

  277. our days

  278. that we may get

  279. a heart

  280. of wisdom.

  281. By confronting us

  282. with the eternal

  283. and inescapable

  284. realities of heaven

  285. and hell,

  286. Revelation 14,

  287. 6 to 20

  288. seeks to give us

  289. that heart

  290. of wisdom.

  291. God,

  292. the inevitable

  293. judgment of God

  294. should make

  295. all of us

  296. fear him

  297. and give him

  298. glory.

  299. I'm going to

  300. first talk about

  301. the contrast

  302. of the call

  303. to repentance

  304. and a call

  305. for endurance

  306. in verses 6

  307. to 13

  308. and I'll talk

  309. about the harvest

  310. of grain

  311. and the harvest

  312. of grapes

  313. in verses 14

  314. to 20.

  315. It says in

  316. verse 6,

  317. Then I saw

  318. another angel

  319. flying directly

  320. overhead

  321. with an eternal

  322. gospel to proclaim

  323. to those who dwell

  324. on earth,

  325. to every nation

  326. and tribe

  327. and language

  328. and people.

  329. This seems

  330. auspicious

  331. at first.

  332. This angel

  333. has an eternal

  334. gospel to proclaim

  335. to all those

  336. people who dwell

  337. on the earth.

  338. And the gospel

  339. means good news

  340. as we talk about

  341. every week.

  342. It's what we

  343. rehearse during

  344. worship every Sunday,

  345. the good news

  346. that Christ Jesus

  347. came into the world

  348. to save sinners,

  349. that he died

  350. on the cross

  351. to atone

  352. for our sins

  353. and to appease

  354. the wrath of God

  355. and that Jesus

  356. was raised

  357. from the dead

  358. so that we might

  359. have everlasting

  360. life and fellowship

  361. with him.

  362. That's the good news.

  363. However,

  364. there are clues

  365. here in this passage

  366. that suggest

  367. that the emphasis

  368. of the angel's

  369. pronouncement

  370. is not actually

  371. salvation

  372. but judgment.

  373. This angel

  374. in chapter 14

  375. is flying

  376. directly overhead

  377. and proclaims

  378. the eternal gospel

  379. in a loud

  380. voice

  381. and begins

  382. a threefold

  383. announcement

  384. of divine judgment.

  385. And these details

  386. are parallel

  387. in chapter 8

  388. verse 13

  389. of the evil

  390. that flies

  391. directly overhead

  392. and proclaims

  393. in a loud voice

  394. the threefold

  395. woes

  396. of divine judgment.

  397. They both

  398. have as their

  399. addressees

  400. those who dwell

  401. on the earth.

  402. And those who dwell

  403. on the earth

  404. is John's way,

  405. the way he

  406. characteristically

  407. refers to those

  408. who do not

  409. have faith

  410. in God,

  411. those who refuse

  412. to repent

  413. of their sins

  414. and therefore

  415. are the object

  416. of the wrath

  417. and judgment

  418. of God.

  419. That's in contrast

  420. with those

  421. who dwell

  422. in heaven

  423. as Revelation

  424. 13, 6

  425. and 12, 12

  426. talk about

  427. which is us,

  428. God's people,

  429. those who believe

  430. in Christ.

  431. Even though we

  432. might live here

  433. presently on earth,

  434. even now

  435. our dwelling place,

  436. our citizenship,

  437. and our home

  438. is in heaven.

  439. The focus

  440. on the judgment

  441. of God

  442. is confirmed

  443. by verse 7.

  444. It says,

  445. And he said

  446. with a loud voice,

  447. Fear God

  448. and give him glory

  449. because the hour

  450. of his judgment

  451. has come

  452. and worship him

  453. who made heaven

  454. and earth,

  455. the sea and the

  456. springs of water.

  457. This raises

  458. the question,

  459. how is the

  460. announcement

  461. of the judgment

  462. of God

  463. the eternal gospel?

  464. That's because

  465. there is no gospel

  466. without the judgment

  467. of God.

  468. For example,

  469. when Isaiah 60

  470. prophesies of the

  471. good news

  472. of Jesus Christ

  473. that's to come,

  474. it announces

  475. good news

  476. and the mercy

  477. of God

  478. to the people

  479. of God,

  480. how God

  481. will deliver them

  482. and build them up.

  483. But in that same

  484. exact context,

  485. it also speaks

  486. of the fact

  487. that the nations

  488. and the kingdoms

  489. that opposed God

  490. and oppressed

  491. God's people

  492. will perish

  493. and be utterly

  494. laid waste.

  495. The good news

  496. of deliverance

  497. on the one hand

  498. for God's people

  499. necessarily includes

  500. on the other hand

  501. bad news

  502. of judgment

  503. for God's enemies.

  504. The gospel

  505. is often summarized

  506. with John 3.16

  507. for God so loved

  508. the world

  509. that he gave

  510. his only son

  511. that whoever

  512. believes in him

  513. should not perish

  514. but have eternal life.

  515. But God's judgment

  516. is also implied

  517. by the gospel

  518. because those

  519. who reject the gospel

  520. will be punished.

  521. John 3.16

  522. is followed

  523. by verses 18-19.

  524. Whoever believes

  525. in him

  526. is not condemned

  527. but whoever

  528. does not believe

  529. is condemned

  530. already

  531. because he has

  532. not believed

  533. in the name

  534. of the only

  535. son of God.

  536. And this is

  537. the judgment.

  538. The light

  539. has come into

  540. the world

  541. and people

  542. love the darkness

  543. rather than the light

  544. because their works

  545. were evil.

  546. The eternal gospel

  547. is the message

  548. of God's deliverance

  549. and rescue

  550. but the corollary

  551. is that

  552. those who refuse

  553. God's rescue

  554. and deliverance

  555. will surely perish

  556. and face

  557. God's eternal judgment.

  558. We frequently

  559. observe this pattern

  560. in scripture.

  561. Romans 1.16

  562. I am not ashamed

  563. of the gospel

  564. for it is the power

  565. of God

  566. for salvation

  567. for those who believe.

  568. And then it's

  569. followed immediately

  570. by

  571. for the wrath

  572. of God

  573. is revealed

  574. from heaven

  575. against all

  576. ungodliness

  577. and unrighteousness

  578. of man.

  579. 2 Corinthians 2.14-16

  580. says the fragrance

  581. of the knowledge

  582. of Jesus Christ

  583. is a fragrance

  584. from life to life

  585. for those

  586. who are being saved.

  587. But that same

  588. fragrance of Christ

  589. is the fragrance

  590. from death to death

  591. among those

  592. who are perishing.

  593. This eternal gospel

  594. of verse 6

  595. is addressed

  596. to those

  597. who are perishing.

  598. to those

  599. who dwell

  600. on the earth.

  601. And it is

  602. therefore

  603. a fragrance

  604. from death

  605. to death.

  606. That's why

  607. it's described

  608. as an eternal gospel

  609. which matches

  610. verse 11

  611. where it says

  612. that the smoke

  613. of their torment

  614. goes up forever

  615. and ever.

  616. That's literally

  617. eternity

  618. of eternities.

  619. It's the same word

  620. as the eternal gospel.

  621. The gospel

  622. is eternal

  623. because its truth

  624. abides forever

  625. and because

  626. what we do

  627. with that truth

  628. determines

  629. our eternal

  630. destinies.

  631. Not all truths

  632. are made equal.

  633. Not all truths

  634. are equally relevant

  635. or equally important

  636. at all times.

  637. I was looking

  638. for the most

  639. random fact

  640. I could find.

  641. For example,

  642. the 1896

  643. Summer Olympics

  644. held in Athens,

  645. Greece

  646. was the first

  647. international Olympic Games

  648. held in modern history.

  649. Fascinating

  650. but useless.

  651. It's completely

  652. irrelevant now.

  653. But the eternal gospel

  654. is eternally relevant

  655. and it is

  656. eternally important

  657. which is

  658. all the more reason

  659. why we must

  660. proclaim it

  661. to all the nations.

  662. and this gospel

  663. is also universal.

  664. It does not apply

  665. only to a part

  666. of the world

  667. only to a particular

  668. people.

  669. No, he says

  670. it applies to

  671. every nation

  672. and tribe

  673. and language

  674. and people

  675. which is why

  676. we must go

  677. to all the nations.

  678. And the angel

  679. says in a loud voice

  680. in verse 7

  681. Fear God

  682. and give Him glory

  683. because the hour

  684. of His judgment

  685. has come

  686. and worship Him

  687. who made heaven

  688. and earth

  689. the sea

  690. and the springs

  691. of water.

  692. The appropriate

  693. response to this

  694. eternal gospel

  695. and the impending

  696. judgment of God

  697. is for us

  698. to fear God

  699. and give Him glory.

  700. If we know

  701. that God

  702. is the creator

  703. who made

  704. the heaven and earth

  705. and the sea

  706. and the springs

  707. of water

  708. if we know

  709. that God

  710. is the universal

  711. judge

  712. who punish

  713. evil doers

  714. then we ought

  715. to fear God

  716. and give Him glory.

  717. The fear of God

  718. is a prominent theme

  719. in the book

  720. of Proverbs.

  721. Proverbs 9.10

  722. says the fear

  723. of the Lord

  724. is the beginning

  725. of wisdom

  726. and the knowledge

  727. of the Holy One

  728. is insight.

  729. So to fear God

  730. is to know Him rightly.

  731. Similarly,

  732. Proverbs 15.33

  733. says the fear

  734. of the Lord

  735. is instruction

  736. in wisdom

  737. and humility

  738. comes before honor.

  739. So the fear

  740. of the Lord

  741. is not just

  742. being terrified

  743. of Him

  744. but knowing

  745. Him rightly

  746. and relating

  747. to Him

  748. with humility

  749. and submission.

  750. In other words,

  751. if we know

  752. how big God

  753. really is

  754. and how small

  755. we really are,

  756. if we know

  757. how holy God

  758. really is

  759. and how sinful

  760. we really are,

  761. then that produces

  762. fear,

  763. reverence,

  764. awe,

  765. worship.

  766. That's the fear

  767. of the Lord.

  768. In Revelation 16.9

  769. we see unbelievers

  770. who despite

  771. the warnings

  772. and the previews

  773. of God's judgment

  774. refuse to repent

  775. and give Him glory.

  776. But as we saw

  777. in Revelation 11.13

  778. when God's final judgment

  779. comes,

  780. even the most

  781. stubborn unbelievers

  782. will have no choice

  783. but to be terrified,

  784. quote,

  785. terrified

  786. and give glory

  787. to the God of heaven.

  788. That's what it says

  789. in Revelation 11.13.

  790. The day is surely coming

  791. when every knee

  792. will bow before Jesus

  793. and every tongue

  794. will confess

  795. the name of Jesus

  796. and worship Him

  797. to the glory

  798. of God the Father.

  799. That day is coming.

  800. And we then

  801. really only have

  802. two choices.

  803. We can fear God

  804. and give Him glory

  805. now voluntarily

  806. or we will be

  807. terrified of Him

  808. and give Him glory

  809. involuntarily

  810. in the future.

  811. we can worship God

  812. joyfully now

  813. or we can worship God

  814. begrudgingly

  815. in the future.

  816. One way or the other

  817. God will get

  818. the glory

  819. that is due to Him.

  820. But if we wait

  821. until God's final judgment

  822. we will have lost

  823. our chance

  824. to repent

  825. and we will not

  826. escape the fire's path.

  827. So this is a call

  828. for repentance

  829. for all those

  830. who have not yet

  831. put their trust

  832. in Jesus

  833. for salvation.

  834. Fear God.

  835. Please

  836. I plead with you

  837. fear God

  838. and give Him glory.

  839. That is your salvation.

  840. Do it while

  841. you still have time.

  842. After this angelic

  843. pronouncement

  844. of the hour of judgment

  845. the second angel

  846. follows in verse 8

  847. saying

  848. fallen, fallen

  849. is Babylon the great

  850. she who made

  851. all nations

  852. drink the wine

  853. of the passion

  854. of her sexual immorality.

  855. This is a preview

  856. of the more lengthy

  857. section on Babylon

  858. and the fall of Babylon

  859. in chapters 17 and 18.

  860. Prophet Isaiah

  861. prophesied

  862. of the fall of Babylon

  863. in the 8th century BC

  864. using these exact words

  865. in Isaiah 21.9

  866. fallen,

  867. fallen

  868. is Babylon.

  869. That expression

  870. Babylon the great

  871. comes from Daniel 4.30

  872. where the king

  873. of Babylon

  874. Nebuchadnezzar

  875. at the time

  876. boasts

  877. is not this

  878. Babylon the great

  879. which I have built

  880. by my mighty power

  881. as a royal residence

  882. and for the glory

  883. of my majesty.

  884. But that boasting

  885. is short lived

  886. because Isaiah's prophecy

  887. is fulfilled

  888. in an immediate sense

  889. in 539 BC

  890. when the Persian Empire

  891. led by King Cyrus

  892. attacks and conquers

  893. Babylon.

  894. But John

  895. appropriates that prophecy

  896. Isaiah's prophecy

  897. and tells us

  898. that it will be fulfilled

  899. it was already fulfilled

  900. in an immediate sense

  901. but it will be fulfilled

  902. in an ultimate sense

  903. at the end of the age.

  904. Because ancient Babylon

  905. sacked Jerusalem

  906. and destroyed

  907. the temple of God

  908. and led people of Judah

  909. into captivity

  910. and exile

  911. and because King Nebuchadnezzar

  912. tried to assimilate

  913. the Jewish religion

  914. and culture

  915. into Babylonian culture

  916. and religion

  917. the name Babylon

  918. became synonymous

  919. with worldly powers

  920. and influences

  921. that persecuted

  922. God's people

  923. and seduced them

  924. into compromise.

  925. That's what Babylon

  926. represents.

  927. In the first century

  928. Babylon was the

  929. code name for Rome

  930. because in the same way

  931. the Babylonian Empire

  932. destroyed the temple

  933. in Jerusalem

  934. in 586 BC

  935. so the Roman Empire

  936. destroyed the temple

  937. and Jerusalem

  938. in 70 AD.

  939. But Babylon the Great

  940. is not primarily

  941. a reference to

  942. ancient Babylon

  943. or even to

  944. ancient Rome

  945. or even to

  946. modern day Iraq

  947. which is where

  948. Babylon geographically

  949. used to be.

  950. But as John says here

  951. in Revelation 14

  952. because the Babylon

  953. the ultimate Babylon

  954. will fall only

  955. at the end of the age.

  956. So it represents

  957. the center

  958. of the sinful world's

  959. cultural influence

  960. and economic power.

  961. in chapter 17

  962. Babylon is called

  963. the great prostitute

  964. who sits

  965. on the beast

  966. of chapter 13

  967. which has seven heads

  968. and ten homes.

  969. So Babylon and the beast

  970. are intimately related.

  971. They're not identical

  972. but they're related.

  973. The beast represented

  974. the worldly rulers

  975. and governments

  976. and kingdoms

  977. that oppose God

  978. and oppress God's people

  979. and Babylon is carried

  980. by this beast.

  981. meaning Babylon's

  982. sinful influence

  983. and wealth

  984. are given prominence

  985. and propagated

  986. by the beast.

  987. Babylon the great

  988. is described

  989. in 17.5

  990. as the mother

  991. of prostitutes

  992. and of earth's

  993. abominations.

  994. She makes

  995. as we see in our chapter

  996. chapter 14 verse 8

  997. she makes all the nations

  998. drink the wine

  999. of the passion

  1000. of her sexual immorality

  1001. and in doing so

1002. she is a fertile prostitute

  1003. who becomes

  1004. the mother of prostitutes

  1005. and of all

  1006. of earth's abominations.

  1007. Babylon's wine

  1008. of the passion

  1009. of her sexual immorality

  1010. is explained later

  1011. in chapter 18 verse 3.

  1012. For all nations

  1013. have drunk the wine

  1014. of the passion

  1015. of her sexual immorality

1016. and the kings of the earth

  1017. have committed

  1018. immorality with her

  1019. and the merchants

  1020. of the earth

  1021. have grown rich

  1022. from the power

  1023. of her luxurious

  1024. living.

  1025. So this

  1026. sexual immorality

  1027. I'm sure there's

  1028. literal sexual immorality

  1029. involved as well

  1030. but here

  1031. it's also a metaphor

  1032. in part

  1033. for the commerce

  1034. and wealth

  1035. that's enabled

  1036. by the beast

  1037. the worldly kingdoms.

  1038. And it's also

  1039. a metaphor

  1040. for idolatry

  1041. because remember

  1042. from chapter 13

  1043. verse 17

  1044. no one can buy

  1045. or sell

  1046. unless he has

  1047. the mark

  1048. of the beast

  1049. that is the name

  1050. of the beast

  1051. or the number

  1052. of its name

  1053. unless you pledge

  1054. allegiance

  1055. to these worldly

  1056. sinful powers

  1057. to the beast

  1058. you cannot buy

  1059. and sell

  1060. and prosper

  1061. so that these people

  1062. who grow rich

  1063. through their intercourse

  1064. with Babylon

  1065. the prostitute

  1066. are guilty

  1067. of idolatry.

  1068. Babylon

  1069. has made them

  1070. drunk with the wine

  1071. of the passion

  1072. of her sexual immorality

  1073. and seduced them

  1074. with prosperity

  1075. and pleasure

  1076. into committing

  1077. spiritual adultery

  1078. against the Lord

  1079. himself.

  1080. To enjoy

  1081. the riches

  1082. and the pleasures

  1083. of Babylon

  1084. the prostitute

  1085. people have succumbed

  1086. to the powers

  1087. of the beast.

  1088. In what ways

  1089. are the pleasures

  1090. and the riches

  1091. of this world

  1092. drawing you

  1093. into the grip

  1094. of the beast?

  1095. This is why

  1096. the third angel

  1097. announces

  1098. in verses 9 to 10

  1099. if anyone

  1100. worships the beast

  1101. and its image

  1102. and receives a mark

  1103. on his forehead

  1104. or on his hand

  1105. he also will drink

  1106. the wine

  1107. of God's wrath

  1108. poured full strength

  1109. into the cup

  1110. of his anger.

  1111. Here the wine

  1112. of God's wrath

  1113. is contrasted

  1114. with the wine

  1115. of the passion

  1116. of the Babylon

  1117. sexual immorality.

  1118. If you are using

  1119. the English standard

  1120. version of the Bible

  1121. you could look there

  1122. in that verse

  1123. and you probably

  1124. have a footnote

  1125. next to the word

  1126. passion in verse 8.

  1127. That tells you

  1128. if you go down

1129. and look at the footnote

  1130. that the word

  1131. translated passion

  1132. can also be translated

  1133. wrath.

  1134. In fact

  1135. outside of

  1136. Revelation 14

  1137. 8

  1138. and 18 3

  1139. where it's

  1140. translated the

  1141. passion of

  1142. the wine

  1143. of the passion

  1144. of Babylon

  1145. sexual immorality

  1146. every single time

  1147. that word

  1148. is translated

  1149. as wrath

  1150. anger

  1151. or fearing.

  1152. And I think

  1153. that's a better

  1154. translation.

  1155. It's the exact

  1156. same Greek word

  1157. that's translated

  1158. wrath in verse 10

  1159. the wine

  1160. of God's wrath.

  1161. So then the

  1162. wine of the

  1163. wrath

  1164. of Babylon

  1165. sexual immorality

  1166. is being

  1167. contrasted

  1168. with the

  1169. wine

  1170. of God's

  1171. wrath.

  1172. What is

  1173. the wine

  1174. of the wrath

  1175. of Babylon

  1176. sexual immorality?

  1177. We're told

  1178. exactly what's

  1179. in that cup

  1180. in Revelation

  1181. 17 6.

  1182. It says

  1183. that the

  1184. Babylon

  1185. prostitute

  1186. is drunk

  1187. with the

  1188. blood

  1189. of the

  1190. saints.

  1191. The

  1192. blood

  1193. of the

  1194. martyrs

  1195. of Jesus.

  1196. So her

  1197. wine

  1198. is the

  1199. blood

  1200. of God's

  1201. people.

  1202. She's

  1203. drunk

  1204. on

  1205. violence

  1206. against

  1207. the

  1208. people

  1209. of God

  1210. which is

  1211. why

  1212. it is

  1213. fitting

  1214. to

  1215. describe

  1216. as the

  1217. wine

  1218. of the

  1219. wrath

  1220. of her

  1221. sexual

  1222. immorality.

  1223. Babylon

  1224. and those

  1225. who intercourse

  1226. with her

  1227. rail against

  1228. the

  1229. people

  1230. of God

  1231. and they

  1232. enrich

  1233. themselves

  1234. at the

  1235. expense

  1236. of the

  1237. people

  1238. of God.

  1239. They get

  1240. drunk

  1241. with the

  1242. blood

  1243. of the

  1244. people

  1245. of God

  1246. and their

  1247. intoxication

  1248. leads to

  1249. even further

  1250. idolatry

  1251. and adultery.

  1252. But divine

  1253. retribution

  1254. is coming.

  1255. Verse 10

  1256. tells us

  1257. that those

  1258. who worship

  1259. the beast

  1260. and took

  1261. on its

  1262. mark,

  1263. those who

  1264. intercourse

  1265. with Babylon

  1266. will drink

  1267. the wine

  1268. of God's

  1269. wrath,

  1270. pour full

  1271. strength

  1272. into the

  1273. cup of

  1274. his

  1275. anger.

  1276. In the

  1277. ancient

  1278. world,

  1279. most people

  1280. diluted

  1281. wine,

  1282. usually with

  1283. two to

  1284. three parts

  1285. water and

  1286. one part

  1287. wine,

  1288. they dilute

  1289. it,

  1290. so it

  1291. was much

  1292. weaker than

  1293. the wine

  1294. that's

  1295. distilled

  1296. nowadays for

  1297. people to

  1298. drink.

  1299. And so

  1300. that's what

  1301. it's referring

  1302. to here.

  1303. Babylon's

  1304. wine of

  1305. wrath

  1306. is diluted

  1307. wine.

  1308. No matter

  1309. how potent

  1310. it seems,

  1311. it's only

  1312. diluted

  1313. wine.

  1314. But the

  1315. wine of

  1316. God's

  1317. wrath is

  1318. undiluted

  1319. poured

  1320. full

  1321. strength.

  1322. The

  1323. Lord spoke

  1324. of this

  1325. wrath in

  1326. Isaiah 51

  1327. 17,

  1328. stand up

  1329. O Jerusalem,

  1330. O you

  1331. who have

  1332. drunk from

  1333. the hand

  1334. of the

  1335. Lord,

  1336. the cup

  1337. of his

  1338. wrath,

  1339. who have

  1340. drunk to

  1341. the dregs

  1342. the bowl,

  1343. the cup

  1344. of

  1345. staggering.

  1346. It's a

  1347. terrifying

  1348. picture.

  1349. Imagine

  1350. being forced

  1351. to down

  1352. liquor that

  1353. you cannot

  1354. handle,

  1355. that will

  1356. make you

  1357. drunk forever,

  1358. leaving you

  1359. staggering and

  1360. completely

  1361. helpless.

  1362. There's no

  1363. sobering up

  1364. from the

  1365. wine of

  1366. God's wrath,

  1367. death.

  1368. Because it's

  1369. the punishment

  1370. that lasts

  1371. for you.

  1372. We see

  1373. this in the

  1374. rest of

  1375. verse 10,

  1376. and he

  1377. will be

  1378. tormented

  1379. with fire

  1380. and sulfur

  1381. in the

  1382. presence of

  1383. the holy

  1384. angels and

  1385. in the

  1386. presence of

  1387. the man.

  1388. Can't get

  1389. clearer than

  1390. this.

  1391. When sinners

  1392. reject Jesus

  1393. Christ and

  1394. die,

  1395. they do not

  1396. simply cease

  1397. to exist.

  1398. They go to

  1399. hell,

  1400. where they are

  1401. tormented with

  1402. fire and

  1403. sulfur.

  1404. This is the

  1405. place that is

  1406. called later in

  1407. Revelation 19,

  1408. 20,

  1409. and 20,

  1410. 10,

  1411. and 21,

  1412. 8,

  1413. as the

  1414. lake that

  1415. burns with

  1416. fire and

  1417. sulfur,

  1418. which is the

  1419. second death.

  1420. fire.

  1421. Now,

  1422. I do think

  1423. these are

  1424. metaphorical,

  1425. but that does

  1426. not make it

  1427. less real or

  1428. less painful.

  1429. To illustrate,

  1430. God is

  1431. described in

  1432. Scripture as a

  1433. consuming fire.

  1434. He is the

  1435. one who dwells

  1436. in unapproachable

  1437. light, it says

  1438. in verse 26,

  1439. 16.

  1440. 1 John 1,

  1441. 5 says that

  1442. God is light

  1443. and in him

  1444. is no darkness

  1445. at all.

  1446. So God is

  1447. light, he is

  1448. fire, he dwells

  1449. in unapproachable

  1450. light.

  1451. In contrast,

  1452. Jesus describes

  1453. hell as the

  1454. outer darkness

  1455. where there will

  1456. be weeping and

  1457. gnashing of teeth.

  1458. This is Matthew

  1459. 25, 30.

  1460. The expression

  1461. gnashing of teeth

  1462. refers to your

  1463. teeth chattering

  1464. because it's

  1465. so cold.

  1466. But at the

  1467. same time,

  1468. hell is also

  1469. called a place

  1470. of eternal

  1471. fire.

  1472. Obviously,

  1473. both of those

  1474. two things

  1475. cannot literally

  1476. coexist because

  1477. if there's

  1478. fire, there's

  1479. warmth and

  1480. there's light,

  1481. you're burning.

  1482. You cannot be

  1483. burning and

  1484. chattowing and

  1485. cold at the

  1486. same time.

  1487. You cannot be

  1488. in outer darkness

  1489. and be in

  1490. eternal fire

  1491. at the same

  1492. time.

  1493. I think these

  1494. are metaphorical.

  1495. But these

  1496. metaphors reveal

  1497. the true nature

  1498. of hell.

  1499. Christian

  1500. philosopher

  1501. Henry Stobb

  1502. explains it

  1503. this way,

  1504. hell in the

  1505. Bible is very

  1506. hot or very

  1507. cold,

  1508. depending on

  1509. whether the

  1510. sinner is

  1511. perceived as

  1512. a rebel or

  1513. an alien.

  1514. hell is

  1515. made by

  1516. those who

  1517. climb the

  1518. holy mountain

  1519. and try to

  1520. unseat the

  1521. holy one

  1522. who are

  1523. blazed with

  1524. glory,

  1525. dwells in

  1526. the light

  1527. unapproachable.

  1528. Those who

  1529. mount an

  1530. attack on

  1531. God and

  1532. cross the

  1533. barrier of

  1534. this exclusive

  1535. divinity die

  1536. like mods in

  1537. the flame of

  1538. him who will

  1539. not and

  1540. cannot be

  1541. displaced.

  1542. And hell is

  1543. made by

  1544. those who,

  1545. turning their

  1546. backs on

  1547. God,

  1548. flee the

  1549. light and

  1550. move toward

  1551. the eternal

  1552. blackness that

  1553. marks God's

  1554. absence.

  1555. hell,

  1556. then,

  1557. is unarrested

  1558. sin's natural

  1559. and programmatic

  1560. end.

  1561. Sin is either

  1562. rebellion or

  1563. flight,

  1564. and when

  1565. persisted in,

  1566. leads either to

  1567. the fiery

  1568. furnace or to

  1569. the cold and

  1570. desolate night.

  1571. Hell is,

  1572. then,

  1573. either a place

  1574. of outer

  1575. darkness and

  1576. extreme cold in

  1577. the absence of

  1578. the light of

  1579. God,

  1580. or the

  1581. place that

  1582. burns with

  1583. fire and

  1584. sulfur with

  1585. the wrathful

  1586. presence of

  1587. God,

  1588. who is a

  1589. consuming fire.

  1590. John,

  1591. here in

  1592. Revelation 14,

  1593. is highlighting

  1594. the latter.

  1595. The one who

  1596. does not put

  1597. his faith in

  1598. Jesus Christ

  1599. will be

  1600. tormented with

  1601. fire and

  1602. sulfur in

  1603. the presence

  1604. of the

  1605. holy angels

  1606. and in the

  1607. presence of

  1608. the Lamb.

  1609. This is why

  1610. it is not

  1611. fully accurate

  1612. to describe

  1613. hell only

  1614. as the

  1615. absence of

  1616. God.

  1617. It is true

  1618. in a sense

  1619. that hell

  1620. is the

  1621. absence of

  1622. God.

  1623. 2 Thessalonians

  1624. 1.9 says

  1625. that those

  1626. who do not

  1627. obey the

  1628. gospel of

  1629. our Lord

  1630. Jesus will

  1631. suffer the

  1632. punishment of

  1633. eternal

  1634. destruction away

  1635. from the

  1636. presence of

  1637. the Lord and

  1638. from the

  1639. glory of

  1640. his might.

  1641. This

  1642. conveys God's

  1643. judgment,

  1644. God turning

  1645. his face

  1646. from them.

  1647. Instead of

  1648. making his

  1649. face shine

  1650. upon them,

  1651. instead of

  1652. lifting

  1653. up his

  1654. gracious

  1655. countenance

  1656. toward them,

  1657. he turns

  1658. his face

  1659. from them

  1660. in judgment.

  1661. That's

  1662. God's

  1663. absence.

  1664. But in

  1665. another sense,

  1666. God cannot

  1667. be fully

  1668. absent from

  1669. hell since

  1670. God is

  1671. omnipresent,

  1672. present

  1673. everywhere.

  1674. As Psalm

  1675. 139,

  1676. 7-8 says,

  1677. Where shall

  1678. I go from

  1679. your spirit?

  1680. Or where

  1681. shall I flee

  1682. from your

  1683. presence?

  1684. If I ascend

  1685. to heaven,

  1686. you are there.

  1687. If I make

  1688. my bed in

  1689. Sheol,

  1690. you are there.

  1691. Revelation 14-10

  1692. teaches us

  1693. clearly that

  1694. the wicked

  1695. will be

  1696. tormented

  1697. with fire

  1698. and sulfur

  1699. in the

  1700. presence of

  1701. the holy

  1702. angels,

  1703. in the

  1704. presence of

  1705. the Lamb.

  1706. This is

  1707. not a

  1708. contradiction.

  1709. God is

  1710. present in

  1711. hell,

  1712. but not

  1713. with his

  1714. gracious

  1715. countenance,

  1716. instead with

  1717. his wrathful

  1718. countenance.

  1719. As Pastor

  1720. John Piper

  1721. puts it,

  1722. with,

  1723. an everlasting

  1724. frown of

  1725. disapproving

  1726. justice.

  1727. The fact

  1728. that fire

  1729. and sulfur

  1730. are metaphorical

  1731. does not

  1732. decrease the

  1733. horrors of

  1734. hell.

  1735. If you

  1736. are a

  1737. Christian,

  1738. then you

  1739. know God

  1740. in his

  1741. boundless

  1742. mercy and

  1743. compassion.

  1744. But can

  1745. you imagine

  1746. facing God's

  1747. eternal wrath

  1748. injustice?

  1749. Can you

  1750. imagine

  1751. spending

  1752. eternity

  1753. before God's

  1754. disapproving

  1755. frown of

  1756. justice?

  1757. Can you

  1758. imagine the

  1759. eternal

  1760. torments of

  1761. hell?

  1762. This is

  1763. why we

  1764. Christians

  1765. should never

  1766. use swear

  1767. words like

  1768. hell or

  1769. damn.

  1770. We should

  1771. never use

  1772. any swear

  1773. word,

  1774. period.

  1775. Ephesians

  1776. 5, 4

  1777. commands us

  1778. categorically

  1779. that there

  1780. be no

  1781. filthiness,

  1782. no foolish

  1783. talk or

  1784. crude

  1785. joking,

  1786. which are

  1787. out of

  1788. place,

  1789. but instead

  1790. let there

  1791. be

  1792. thanksgiving.

  1793. Swear

  1794. words are

  1795. without

  1796. exception,

  1797. out of

  1798. place,

  1799. and

  1800. unseemly,

  1801. because they

  1802. profane what

  1803. is sacred,

  1804. or make

  1805. light of

  1806. what is

  1807. grave.

  1808. words are

  1809. never just

  1810. words.

  1811. The words

  1812. that we

  1813. use shape

  1814. our attitudes

  1815. and actions

  1816. toward the

  1817. things that

  1818. those words

  1819. represent.

  1820. Do you

  1821. think that

  1822. people who

  1823. casually throw

  1824. around words

  1825. like hell

  1826. or damn

  1827. will take

  1828. hell and

  1829. damnation

  1830. seriously?

  1831. do you

  1832. speak

  1833. casually or

  1834. jokingly

  1835. about the

  1836. Holocaust?

  1837. Surely

  1838. not.

  1839. Why then

  1840. would you

  1841. speak casually

  1842. of the

  1843. place of

  1844. eternal

  1845. torment?

  1846. Where the

  1847. undiluted

  1848. wrath of

  1849. God is

  1850. poured out

  1851. in full

  1852. strength.

  1853. look at

  1854. verse 11.

  1855. The smoke

  1856. of their

  1857. torment

  1858. goes up

  1859. forever

  1860. and ever

  1861. and they

  1862. have no

  1863. rest day

  1864. or night.

  1865. These

  1866. worshippers

  1867. of the

  1868. beast and

  1869. its image

  1870. and whoever

  1871. receives the

  1872. mark of

  1873. its name.

  1874. In

  1875. James Joyce's

  1876. novel,

  1877. A Portrait of

  1878. the Artist

  1879. as a Young

  1880. Man,

  1881. there's a

  1882. preacher who

  1883. describes hell

  1884. vividly in

  1885. this manner.

  1886. A holy

  1887. saint was

  1888. once vouchsafed

  1889. the vision

  1890. of hell.

  1891. It seemed

  1892. to him

  1893. that he

  1894. stood in

  1895. the midst

  1896. of a

  1897. great

  1898. hole,

  1899. dark and

  1900. silent,

  1901. save for

  1902. the ticking

  1903. of a

  1904. great

  1905. clock.

  1906. The

  1907. ticking

  1908. went on

  1909. unceasingly.

  1910. And it

  1911. seemed to

  1912. this saint

  1913. that the

  1914. sound of

  1915. the ticking

  1916. was the

  1917. ceaseless

  1918. repetition

  1919. of the

  1920. words,

  1921. ever,

  1922. never,

  1923. ever,

  1924. never,

  1925. ever to

  1926. be in

  1927. hell,

  1928. never to

  1929. be in

  1930. heaven,

  1931. ever to

  1932. be shut

  1933. off from

  1934. the presence

  1935. of God,

  1936. never to

  1937. enjoy the

  1938. beautiful

  1939. vision,

  1940. ever to

  1941. be eaten

  1942. with flames,

  1943. gnawed by

  1944. vermin,

  1945. goaded with

  1946. burning

  1947. spikes,

  1948. never to

  1949. be freed

  1950. from those

  1951. pains,

  1952. ever to

  1953. have the

  1954. conscience

  1955. upbraid

  1956. one,

  1957. the memory

  1958. enraged,

  1959. the mind

  1960. filled with

  1961. darkness and

  1962. despair,

  1963. never to

  1964. escape,

  1965. ever to

  1966. cry out of

  1967. the abyss

  1968. of fire to

  1969. God for

  1970. an instant,

  1971. a single

  1972. instant of

  1973. respite from

  1974. such awful

  1975. agony,

  1976. never to

  1977. receive,

  1978. even for

  1979. an instant,

  1980. God's

  1981. pardon,

  1982. ever to

  1983. suffer,

  1984. never to

  1985. enjoy,

  1986. ever to

  1987. be damned,

  1988. never to

  1989. be saved,

  1990. ever,

  1991. never,

  1992. ever,

  1993. never.

  1994. This is

  1995. the meaning

  1996. of verse

  1997. 11.

  1998. Their

  1999. torment goes

  2000. up forever

  2001. and ever

  2002. and they

  2003. have no

  2004. rest day

  2005. or night.

  2006. You might

  2007. ask,

  2008. how can

  2009. sins

  2010. committed in

  2011. this short

  2012. temporal life

  2013. warrant

  2014. eternal

  2015. punishment?

  2016. How is

  2017. that just?

  2018. I have

  2019. some of

  2020. my kids'

  2021. beautiful

  2022. drawings

  2023. hanging up

  2024. in my

  2025. bedroom

  2026. and if

  2027. one of

  2028. you were

  2029. to come

  2030. to my

  2031. house

  2032. and then

  2033. go into

  2034. my room

  2035. and then

  2036. scribble

  2037. all over

  2038. their artwork,

  2039. it will

  2040. probably leave

  2041. my kids

  2042. crying and

  2043. I will be

  2044. very upset

  2045. with you.

  2046. but I'm

  2047. never going

  2048. to sue

  2049. you

  2050. because I'm

  2051. not going

  2052. to get

  2053. anything

  2054. because those

  2055. paintings are

  2056. not worth

  2057. that much

  2058. money

  2059. yet.

  2060. But in

  2061. Italy,

  2062. if you

  2063. deface

  2064. monuments

  2065. or artworks,

  2066. even for the

  2067. sake of

  2068. protests,

  2069. you have

  2070. to pay

  2071. fines up

  2072. to $64,000.

  2073. Why?

  2074. Because that

  2075. artwork has

  2076. significance.

  2077. It has

  2078. cultural

  2079. cachet

  2080. and value.

  2081. Or think

  2082. of it this

  2083. way,

  2084. if a man

  2085. swats a

  2086. fly,

  2087. nobody

  2088. will bat

  2089. an eye.

  2090. But if a

  2091. man were

  2092. to slap

  2093. his wife,

  2094. he can

  2095. go to

  2096. jail.

  2097. Why?

  2098. Because

  2099. a human

  2100. being is

  2101. way more

  2102. valuable

  2103. than a

  2104. fly.

  2105. The

  2106. gravity

  2107. of the

  2108. offense

  2109. and the

  2110. commensurate

  2111. punishment

  2112. depend not

  2113. only on

  2114. the nature

  2115. of the

  2116. act itself,

  2117. but on

  2118. the dignity

  2119. and worth

  2120. of the

  2121. object of

  2122. that offense.

  2123. How much

  2124. more than

  2125. does this

  2126. principle apply

  2127. when it

  2128. comes to

  2129. God?

  2130. God is

  2131. infinitely

  2132. worthy of

  2133. our faith

  2134. and obedience

  2135. and worship

  2136. for that

  2137. reason to

  2138. sin against

  2139. God merits

  2140. infinite

  2141. punishment.

  2142. That's why

  2143. we say in

  2144. one of our

  2145. confessions of

  2146. sins that

  2147. we use on

  2148. Sundays,

  2149. let us

  2150. never forget

  2151. that we

  2152. have an

  2153. eternal

  2154. duty to

  2155. love,

  2156. honor,

  2157. and obey

  2158. you,

  2159. that you

  2160. are infinitely

  2161. worthy of

  2162. such,

  2163. that if we

  2164. fail to

  2165. glorify you,

  2166. we are

  2167. guilty of

  2168. infinite

  2169. evil that

  2170. merits

  2171. infinite

  2172. punishment,

  2173. for sin

  2174. is the

  2175. violation

  2176. of an

  2177. infinite

  2178. obligation.

  2179. Our sins

  2180. deserve

  2181. eternal

  2182. punishment,

  2183. not primarily

  2184. because of

  2185. what we

  2186. have done,

  2187. but because

  2188. of whom

  2189. against

  2190. whom

  2191. we have

  2192. sinned.

  2193. Sin is an

  2194. act of

  2195. treason

  2196. against the

  2197. kingship of

  2198. God.

  2199. Sin is an

  2200. act of

  2201. adultery that

  2202. betrays the

  2203. everlasting love

  2204. of God,

  2205. and sin

  2206. against an

  2207. eternal God

  2208. merits eternal

  2209. punishment.

  2210. That's why

  2211. they have no

  2212. rest day or

  2213. night.

  2214. And the

  2215. restlessness of

  2216. the worshippers

  2217. of the beast

  2218. is contrasted

  2219. with the rest

  2220. that is prepared

  2221. for the

  2222. worshippers of

  2223. the lamb in

  2224. verse 13.

  2225. Blessed are

  2226. the dead

  2227. who die

  2228. in the

  2229. Lord from

  2230. now on.

  2231. Blessed

  2232. indeed,

  2233. says the

  2234. spirit,

  2235. that they

  2236. may rest

  2237. from their

  2238. labors,

  2239. for their

  2240. deeds follow

  2241. them.

  2242. If we are

  2243. truly in

  2244. Christ,

  2245. if we are

  2246. Christians,

  2247. then it's a

  2248. blessing for

  2249. us to die.

  2250. Do you

  2251. believe that?

  2252. Paul says

  2253. it's better

  2254. for him to

  2255. die and to

  2256. depart to be

  2257. with Christ

  2258. in Philippians

  2259. 1.23,

  2260. because there

  2261. we will have

  2262. finally rest

  2263. from our

  2264. labors.

  2265. The Greek

  2266. word translated

  2267. labors here

  2268. is a word

  2269. that conveys

  2270. a sense of

  2271. toil and

  2272. hardship and

  2273. trouble and

  2274. difficulty.

  2275. That's what

  2276. our life on

  2277. earth is like,

  2278. isn't it?

  2279. Here we are

  2280. beset by our

  2281. own sinful

  2282. flesh.

  2283. Here we are

  2284. assailed by

  2285. the sinful

  2286. world.

  2287. Here we are

  2288. tormented and

  2289. pursued by the

  2290. devil.

  2291. But this

  2292. verse assures

  2293. us that though

  2294. we might be

  2295. persecuted and

  2296. killed in

  2297. this life,

  2298. we will

  2299. have life

  2300. forevermore

  2301. with God

  2302. in heaven.

  2303. Though we

  2304. might be

  2305. poor and

  2306. disenfranchised

  2307. here on

  2308. earth,

  2309. that soon

  2310. heavenly

  2311. inheritance

  2312. will be

  2313. ours.

  2314. 19th

  2315. century British

  2316. pastor Charles

  2317. Spurgeon

  2318. describes dying

  2319. and going to

  2320. heaven in

  2321. this beautiful

  2322. way.

  2323. To come

  2324. to thee

  2325. is to

  2326. come home

  2327. from exile,

  2328. to come

  2329. to land

  2330. out of the

  2331. raging storm,

  2332. to come

  2333. to rest

  2334. after long

  2335. labor,

  2336. to come

  2337. to the

  2338. goal of

  2339. my desires

  2340. and the

  2341. summit of

  2342. my wishes.

  2343. This should

  2344. motivate us

  2345. to endure

  2346. with faith

  2347. and obedience.

  2348. Verse 12

  2349. says,

  2350. here is a

  2351. call for

  2352. the

  2353. endurance

  2354. of the

  2355. saints,

  2356. those who

  2357. keep the

  2358. commandments

  2359. of God

  2360. and their

  2361. faith in

  2362. Jesus.

  2363. The

  2364. certainty

  2365. of hell

  2366. should make

  2367. us fear

  2368. God and

  2369. give him

  2370. glory.

  2371. And the

  2372. certainty

  2373. of heaven

  2374. should make

  2375. us keep

  2376. God's

  2377. commandments

  2378. and our

  2379. faith in

  2380. Jesus.

  2381. Christian

  2382. author Randy

  2383. Alcorn says

  2384. this in his

  2385. book entitled

  2386. Heaven.

  2387. Earth is an

  2388. in-between

  2389. world touched

  2390. by both

  2391. heaven and

  2392. hell.

  2393. earth leads

  2394. directly into

  2395. heaven or

  2396. directly into

  2397. hell,

  2398. affording a

  2399. choice between

  2400. the two.

  2401. The best of

  2402. life on

  2403. earth is a

  2404. glimpse of

  2405. heaven.

  2406. The worst

  2407. of life is a

  2408. glimpse of

  2409. hell.

  2410. For

  2411. Christians,

  2412. this present

  2413. life is the

  2414. closest they

  2415. will come to

  2416. hell.

  2417. For

  2418. unbelievers,

  2419. it is the

  2420. closest they

  2421. will come

  2422. to hell.

  2423. What is

  2424. earth to

  2425. you?

  2426. where are

  2427. you in

  2428. your relation

  2429. to Christ?

  2430. Is

  2431. earth the

  2432. closest you'll

  2433. get to

  2434. heaven?

  2435. Or is

  2436. this the

  2437. closest you'll

  2438. get to

  2439. hell?

  2440. The scene

  2441. shifts in

  2442. verses 14 to

  2443. 20 to the

  2444. contrast of

  2445. the harvest of

  2446. grain and

  2447. the harvest of

  2448. grapes.

  2449. The main

  2450. point is the

  2451. same.

  2452. The inevitable

  2453. judgment of

  2454. God should make

  2455. all of us fear

  2456. him and give

  2457. him glory.

  2458. It says in

  2459. verses 14 to

  2460. 16,

  2461. And I

  2462. looked as

  2463. behold a

  2464. white cloud

  2465. and seated

  2466. on the

  2467. cloud one

  2468. like a

  2469. son of

  2470. man with

  2471. a golden

  2472. crown on

  2473. his head and

  2474. a sharp

  2475. sickle in

  2476. his hand.

  2477. And another

  2478. angel came out

  2479. of the temple

  2480. calling with a

  2481. loud voice to

  2482. him who said

  2483. on the cloud,

  2484. Put in your

  2485. sickle and

  2486. reap, for the

  2487. hour to reap

  2488. has come, for

  2489. the harvest of

  2490. the earth is

  2491. fully ripe.

  2492. So he

  2493. sat on the

  2494. cloud, swung

  2495. his sickle

  2496. across the

  2497. earth, and

  2498. the earth was

  2499. reaped.

  2500. This figure

  2501. here is set

  2502. apart from

  2503. the angels,

  2504. the number of

  2505. angels in the

  2506. rest of this

  2507. chapter, because

  2508. he is described

  2509. as the one

  2510. like a son of

  2511. man.

  2512. He is seated

  2513. on the cloud

  2514. and wears a

  2515. golden crown on

  2516. his head,

  2517. indicating his

  2518. rule, his

  2519. kingship.

  2520. This is none

  2521. other than

  2522. Jesus himself,

  2523. Christ the

  2524. king.

  2525. John has

  2526. already referred

  2527. to Jesus as

  2528. the one like a

  2529. son of man in

  2530. Revelation 1.13,

  2531. and he is

  2532. alluding in

  2533. both of those

  2534. passages to

  2535. Daniel 7.13-14,

  2536. where in

  2537. prophet Daniel's

  2538. vision, one

  2539. like a son of

  2540. man comes with

  2541. the clouds of

  2542. heaven and

  2543. approaches the

  2544. engine of

  2545. days and

  2546. receives from

  2547. him everlasting

  2548. dominion and

  2549. glory and

  2550. kingdom, so

  2551. that all

  2552. peoples and

  2553. nations and

  2554. languages serve

  2555. him and

  2556. worship him.

  2557. Jesus applied

  2558. the prophetic

  2559. vision of

  2560. Daniel 7 to

  2561. himself when

  2562. he was on

  2563. trial with the

  2564. high priest in

  2565. Mark 14.62,

  2566. the high priest

  2567. asked Jesus,

  2568. are you the

  2569. Christ, the

  2570. son of the

  2571. blessed?

  2572. And then

  2573. Jesus replied,

  2574. I am.

  2575. And you

  2576. will see the

  2577. son of man

  2578. seated at the

  2579. right hand of

  2580. power and

  2581. coming with the

  2582. clouds of

  2583. heaven.

  2584. Some people

  2585. object that

  2586. Jesus could

  2587. not possibly,

  2588. this could not

  2589. possibly be

  2590. Jesus because

  2591. he receives a

  2592. command from

  2593. an angel in

  2594. verse 15.

  2595. But this

  2596. poses no

  2597. problem because

  2598. the angel is

  2599. simply a

  2600. messenger.

  2601. The word

  2602. angel literally

  2603. means messenger.

  2604. And notice

  2605. that this

  2606. angel comes

  2607. out of the

  2608. temple, meaning

  2609. the temple in

  2610. heaven, the

  2611. dwelling place of

  2612. God himself,

  2613. God the

  2614. Father.

  2615. The angel in

  2616. verse 15 is

  2617. simply relaying

  2618. the command of

  2619. the Father,

  2620. put in your

  2621. sickle and

  2622. reap for the

  2623. hour to reap

  2624. has come, for

  2625. the harvest of

  2626. the earth is

  2627. fully ripe.

  2628. Jesus taught

  2629. us in Mark

  2630. 13, 32,

  2631. concerning that

  2632. day or the

  2633. hour, no one

  2634. knows, not even

  2635. the angels in

  2636. heaven, nor the

  2637. Son, but only

  2638. the Father.

  2639. So it is

  2640. natural for

  2641. Jesus to

  2642. receive the

  2643. announcement of

  2644. that hour which

  2645. only the Father

  2646. knows from the

  2647. Father's messenger.

  2648. I think this

  2649. first harvest by

  2650. Jesus represents

  2651. the harvest of

  2652. first fruits that

  2653. we saw last

  2654. week in

  2655. verses 1 to 5.

  2656. There I

  2657. argued that

  2658. the 144,000,

  2659. the elect

  2660. people of

  2661. God, it

  2662. represents those

  2663. who are sealed

  2664. with the name

  2665. of the Lamb,

  2666. and it

  2667. represents all

  2668. of God's

  2669. people, those

  2670. who have, as

  2671. verse 4 says,

  2672. have been

  2673. redeemed from

  2674. mankind as

  2675. first fruits for

  2676. God and the

  2677. Lamb.

  2678. And I

  2679. mentioned last

  2680. week that

  2681. first fruits is

  2682. an allusion to

  2683. the Old

  2684. Testament feast of

  2685. the harvest,

  2686. where the

  2687. first fruits of

  2688. your labor,

  2689. like wheat,

  2690. first fruits that

  2691. come up as

  2692. grain, that

  2693. are ready for

  2694. the harvest,

  2695. are taken and

  2696. dedicated to God

  2697. as a wave

  2698. offering.

  2699. And in this

  2700. sense, this

  2701. idea of first

  2702. fruits comes to

  2703. represent the

  2704. portion of the

  2705. harvest that

  2706. belongs specially

  2707. to God, that

  2708. is set aside and

  2709. set apart for

  2710. God.

  2711. That's the idea

  2712. that's behind

  2713. James 1.18 when

  2714. it says, concerning

  2715. all of God's

  2716. people, of his

  2717. own will, God

  2718. brought us forth

  2719. by the word of

  2720. truth, that we

  2721. should be a kind

  2722. of first fruits of

  2723. his creatures.

  2724. This first

  2725. harvest is the

  2726. harvest of first

  2727. fruits, this

  2728. harvest that Jesus

  2729. brings about.

  2730. It's the harvest of

  2731. redemption.

  2732. And the second

  2733. harvest, which we'll

  2734. see shortly, is the

  2735. harvest of judgment.

  2736. The two-stage and

  2737. time harvest is seen

  2738. in Matthew 3.12,

  2739. where John the

  2740. Baptist says,

  2741. concerning Jesus,

  2742. that a winnowing

  2743. fork is in his

  2744. hand, and he will

  2745. clear his threshing

  2746. floor and gather his

  2747. wheat into the

  2748. barn, but the

  2749. chaff he will burn

  2750. with unquenchable

  2751. fire.

  2752. The wheat that

  2753. will be gathered

  2754. into the barn is

  2755. contrasted with the

  2756. chaff that will be

  2757. burned with fire.

  2758. And we see this

  2759. same two-stage

  2760. harvest in the

  2761. parable that Jesus

  2762. tells in Matthew

  2763. 13, where the

  2764. kingdom of heaven is

  2765. to compare to a

  2766. field that is sown

  2767. with both wheat and

  2768. weeds.

  2769. And the master of

  2770. the field says,

  2771. let them grow

  2772. together.

  2773. Don't try to

  2774. separate them out

  2775. now.

  2776. Let the weeds and

  2777. the wheat grow

  2778. together.

  2779. And then, when

  2780. the harvest comes,

  2781. the weeds are

  2782. burned, and the

  2783. weeds are gathered.

  2784. The second harvest,

  2785. in verses 17 to

  2786. 20, is different.

  2787. It's from the first

  2788. harvest in a number

  2789. of ways.

  2790. First, it's

  2791. harvested by the

  2792. angel and not by

  2793. Christ himself.

  2794. And second, in

  2795. verse 18, this

  2796. angel came out from

  2797. the altar.

  2798. The angel who

  2799. announces this, the

  2800. angel who has

  2801. authority over the

  2802. fire.

  2803. Fire from the

  2804. altar.

  2805. This is a

  2806. reference to

  2807. Revelation 8,

  2808. 1 to 5, where

  2809. the prayers of

  2810. the saints, crying

  2811. out to God to

  2812. avenge their

  2813. blood on those

  2814. who dwell on

  2815. the earth, rose

  2816. as incense before

  2817. God at the altar

  2818. before the throne.

  2819. And in answer to

  2820. those prayers, God

  2821. commanded an angel

  2822. who then took the

  2823. fire from that

  2824. altar and cast it

  2825. upon the earth, upon

  2826. those who dwell on

  2827. the earth, which

  2828. brought forth the

  2829. judgments of God

  2830. in the trumpets,

  2831. seven trumpets.

2832. So this is, this is

  2833. the angel that

  2834. announces the

  2835. second harvest is

  2836. one who has

  2837. authority over the

  2838. fire from the

  2839. altar.

  2840. In other words, this

  2841. is a harvest of

  2842. judgment.

  2843. While the first

  2844. harvest was a

  2845. harvest of grains,

  2846. possibly wheat,

  2847. second harvest is a

  2848. harvest of grapes.

  2849. Notice verse 15

  2850. says the harvest of

  2851. the earth.

  2852. And the Greek word

2853. that is used to say

  2854. that the harvest of

  2855. the earth was fully

2856. ripe is a word that

  2857. literally means to

  2858. dry up or shrivel

  2859. up.

  2860. And that's the word

  2861. that's used in

  2862. Greek to describe

  2863. when a harvest of

  2864. grains is ready.

  2865. Because a grain

  2866. harvest is not ready

  2867. until the wheat turns

  2868. dry.

  2869. I don't know much

  2870. about farming, so I

  2871. did this up online,

  2872. and some random

  2873. farm online claims

  2874. that the wheat grain

  2875. has to have less

  2876. than 14.5% of

  2877. moisture left in

2878. order for it to be

  2879. stored safely.

  2880. I don't know how

  2881. he measures that.

  2882. In contrast,

  2883. verse 18 says,

  2884. put in your sickle

  2885. and gather the

  2886. clusters from the

  2887. vine of the earth,

  2888. for its grapes are

  2889. ripe.

  2890. The Greek word for

  2891. ripe here is a

  2892. different word than

  2893. the one used in

  2894. verse 15.

  2895. This word here

  2896. means to bloom,

  2897. to come to the

  2898. best time of its

  2899. life.

  2900. So even here,

  2901. there is a stark

  2902. contrast.

  2903. The people of God,

  2904. when harvest time

  2905. comes on earth,

  2906. are like wheat that's

  2907. withered up and

  2908. shriveled up,

  2909. and that's why

  2910. they're ready for

  2911. the harvest.

  2912. Because they're

  2913. oppressed and

  2914. persecuted on earth.

  2915. But the enemies of

  2916. God, the grapes,

  2917. are plump and

  2918. juicy, full of and

  2919. drunk with the

  2920. blood of the saints.

  2921. But when the

  2922. sickle is swung,

  2923. their fates are

  2924. dramatically reversed.

  2925. The wheat are

  2926. gathered into the

  2927. barn as the

  2928. first fruits for God.

  2929. And the grapes are

  2930. trodden outside the

  2931. city.

  2932. In this life, the

  2933. people of God face

  2934. the wrath of the

  2935. dragon, 1212, and

  2936. the wrath of Babylon,

  2937. 148.

  2938. But in eternity, it's

  2939. the enemies of God

  2940. who will face the

  2941. wrath of God

  2942. himself.

  2943. It says in verses

  2944. 19 to 20,

  2945. So the angel swung

  2946. his circle across the

  2947. earth and gathered the

  2948. great harvest of the

  2949. earth and threw it

  2950. into the great wine

2951. press of the wrath of

  2952. God.

  2953. And the wine

  2954. press was trodden

  2955. outside the city and

  2956. blood flowed from the

2957. wine press as high as

  2958. a horse's bridle for

  2959. 1600 stadia.

  2960. It's a gruesome image.

2961. It's great that we have

2962. it in words and not in

  2963. pictures.

  2964. It's a gruesome image of

  2965. people like grapes being

  2966. thrown into a wine

  2967. press.

  2968. and then crushed,

  2969. trembled all over so

  2970. that the juice squeezes

2971. out of the wine press

  2972. like blood.

  2973. And the blood that

  2974. spills out of the

2975. wine press is such that

  2976. it stretches for 1600

  2977. stadia, 184 miles, and

2978. mounts up to the height

  2979. of a horse's bridle,

2980. which is worn on the

  2981. horse's head, so it's

  2982. about six feet tall.

  2983. Imagine.

  2984. It's a tsunami of

  2985. blood that pours forth

  2986. from this wine press

  2987. of God's wrath.

  2988. Number 1600 is likely

  2989. symbolic like most other

  2990. numbers in Revelation.

2991. It can be four times four

  2992. times a hundred,

  2993. similar to twelve times

  2994. twelve times a thousand

2995. to make up the 144,000

  2996. people of God.

  2997. Number four throughout

  2998. Revelation symbolizes

  2999. universality.

  3000. The earth's four corners,

3001. the four winds of the

  3002. earth, the four-fold

  3003. formula of every tribe,

  3004. tongue, people, and

  3005. nation.

  3006. And so 1600 stadia

  3007. represents the

  3008. comprehensive universality

  3009. of God's judgment.

  3010. No one escapes it.

3011. Even in this, there is

  3012. poetic justice because if

  3013. you remember from

  3014. Revelation 11, 2,

3015. they are the holy city

  3016. which represents the

  3017. people of God.

  3018. It's said we're

  3019. trampled by the

  3020. unbelieving nations.

  3021. But here in 1420,

  3022. it's the unbelieving

  3023. nations that are

  3024. trodden outside the

  3025. sea.

  3026. The trampled and

  3027. tread are the exact

  3028. same Greek words.

3029. I think we could use

  3030. some good news after

  3031. this.

  3032. Hebrews 13, 11-12

  3033. notes that Jesus

3034. died on the cross as

  3035. a sacrifice for

  3036. sin.

  3037. outside the camp,

  3038. outside the city,

  3039. where the sacrifices

  3040. on the Day of

  3041. Atonement were to

  3042. be burned.

  3043. Jesus went where

  3044. sinners deserve to go

  3045. to be punished so

3046. that he could die for

  3047. our sins as a

  3048. sacrifice.

  3049. David Wells, a

  3050. Christian theologian,

3051. puts it this way in

  3052. his book, The

  3053. Search for

  3054. Salvation.

  3055. Man is alienated

  3056. from God by

  3057. sin.

  3058. And God is

  3059. alienated from

  3060. man by wrath.

  3061. It is the

  3062. substitutionary death

  3063. of Christ,

  3064. it is in the

  3065. substitutionary death

  3066. of Christ,

  3067. that sin is

  3068. overcome and

  3069. wrath averted.

  3070. So that God can

  3071. look on man

  3072. without displeasure,

  3073. and man can look

  3074. on God without

  3075. fear.

  3076. Sin is

  3077. expiated,

  3078. and God is

  3079. propitiated.

  3080. that's the good

  3081. news of the

  3082. eternal gospel.

  3083. If you refuse to

  3084. believe in Jesus

  3085. and fail to accept

  3086. Christ's sacrifice

  3087. for sin outside the

  3088. city, then you are

  3089. still in your sins,

  3090. and you are still

  3091. under the wrath of

  3092. God, and for this

  3093. reason you yourself

  3094. will be excluded

  3095. from the beloved

  3096. city and suffer

  3097. eternal torment

  3098. outside the city.

  3099. sin.

  3100. But if, if you

  3101. turn from your

  3102. sin in repentance,

  3103. and you turn

  3104. toward Jesus in

  3105. faith, if you fear

  3106. God and give Him

  3107. glory, your sins

  3108. will be paid for,

  3109. and you will be

  3110. destined to bear the

  3111. eternal wrath of God

  3112. and His frowning

  3113. countenance no more.

  3114. Do you know,

  3115. beloved saints of

  3116. God, that when

  3117. God looks at you,

  3118. He does not see

  3119. a failure

  3120. and a

  3121. disappointment

  3122. or an

  3123. incorrigible

  3124. mess,

  3125. but that He sees

  3126. a beloved

  3127. child?

  3128. Do you know that

  3129. there's not a

  3130. drop of

  3131. the wine of

  3132. God's wrath

  3133. left for you

  3134. to drink?

  3135. Because Jesus

  3136. bore that wrath

  3137. on our behalf

  3138. on the cross?

  3139. Remember, just

  3140. before He goes

  3141. to the cross,

  3142. in the Garden of

  3143. Gethsemane, as

  3144. He's agonizing

  3145. and pouring His

  3146. heart before His

  3147. Father, He says,

  3148. Father, if you

  3149. are willing,

  3150. remove this

  3151. cup from

  3152. me.

  3153. Nevertheless,

  3154. not my will,

  3155. but yours

  3156. be done.

  3157. What is that

  3158. cup?

  3159. You guessed

  3160. it.

  3161. That's the

  3162. cup that we

  3163. see here.

  3164. That's the

  3165. cup of the

  3166. wine of God's

  3167. wrath.

  3168. The cup of

  3169. staggering.

  3170. The cup of

  3171. eternal torment.

  3172. Cup of

  3173. alienation and

  3174. separation from

  3175. God.

  3176. That eternal

  3177. cup.

  3178. Jesus takes

  3179. it for us

  3180. on the cross

  3181. and He drinks

  3182. it to the

  3183. very last

  3184. drop.

  3185. Down to the

  3186. trace.

  3187. so there

  3188. is not a

  3189. drop of

  3190. wrath left

  3191. for us.

  3192. Oh, that

  3193. should give

  3194. us great

  3195. confidence.

  3196. My Christian

  3197. brothers and

  3198. sisters,

  3199. should give

  3200. us great

  3201. confidence for

  3202. both life and

  3203. death.

  3204. We close

  3205. with this

  3206. hymn.

  3207. It was

  3208. written in

  3209. the 17th

  3210. century by

  3211. a pastor

  3212. named Richard

  3213. Baxter.

  3214. Lord,

  3215. it belongs

  3216. not to

  3217. my care,

  3218. whether I

  3219. die or

  3220. live.

  3221. To love

  3222. and serve

  3223. Thee is

  3224. my share,

  3225. and this

  3226. Thy grace

  3227. must give.

  3228. If life

  3229. be long,

  3230. I will be

  3231. glad that

  3232. I may long

  3233. obey.

  3234. If short,

  3235. yet why

  3236. should I be

  3237. sad?

  3238. to soar

  3239. to endless

  3240. day.

  3241. Father,

  3242. grant us

  3243. by Your

  3244. Spirit the

  3245. eyes of

  3246. faith,

  3247. that we

  3248. might take

  3249. hold of

  3250. these eternal

  3251. realities and

  3252. live them

  3253. out daily.

  3254. Lord,

  3255. save those

  3256. who are lost

  3257. in this

  3258. world,

  3259. and grant

  3260. endurance and

  3261. perseverance

  3262. to those

  3263. who are

  3264. Yours.

  3265. In Jesus'

  3266. name we

  3267. pray.

  3268. Amen.

  3269. have been

  3270. there.
