  1. We have the word of God. It comes from

  2. God

  3. and it uh reveals him to us. Open your

  4. Bibles this morning if you would to John

  5. 1 verse one.

  6. We've looked at the titles

  7. and the names that have been ascribed to

  8. Jesus. And

  9. I don't know, there's almost 60 of them.

  10. Each one of them important. Each one of

  11. them

  12. uh reveals to us who he is and and what

  13. he's about.

  14. And he's the one that we need.

  15. And he's given to us his word. It's the

  16. word. We have the word of God. This

  17. isn't the word of men.

  18. That's the great thing about studying

  19. God and his word is we get above the

  20. opinions of men

  21. and ideals of men

  22. and you know sometimes those are good

  23. and important but when they contradict

  24. what God has said then we have to go

  25. with what God says.

  26. So, it's important for us to look at his

  27. word. And today, we're going to look at

  28. uh who can forgive sins but God alone.

  29. That's going to be the theme

  30. of this message. We're going to build up

  31. to it. We're going to look at that verse

  32. here in a minute. But, we've been

  33. looking at some of the titles that have

  34. already been ascribed to Christ.

  35. He always has been has always been the

  36. son of God.

  37. And he became the son of man when he

  38. come to work

  39. and we have been studying him

  40. and his preexistence in the Old

  41. Testament

  42. uh tells us about him. We can even learn

  43. about him in the Old Testament before he

  44. ever came. And now that he has come, we

  45. can learn even more. And in John chapter

    John 1 chapter mention

  46. 1 verse one here we see that

  47. that he is eternal. That's one of the

  48. great things about Jesus is he's

  49. eternal.

  50. He has life. You know those verses. But

  51. as we begin here this morning to think

  52. about who can forgive sins but God

  53. alone. You know we have God talk in the

  54. Bible. We've talked about that

  55. in in the Psalm 22 verse1. My God, my

  56. God, why have you forsaken me? So there

  57. we have God talk.

  58. So everywhere else, you know, God is

  59. talking to us. He speaks and then, you

  60. know, we don't want to contradict what

  61. he says. We want to do what he says and

  62. believe what he says. I'll try to change

  63. his mind.

  64. And you know these things are written

  65. that we might know that we might believe

  66. that he has sent his son. That's how

  67. John book of John ends. But Jesus says

  68. here in chapter 1 verse one, in the

  69. beginning was the word and the word was

  70. with God and the word is God. The same

  71. was in the beginning with God. So John

  72. shows us this this eternal existence

  73. that the son of God had. Uh he became a

  74. man but he is always God. He didn't have

  75. a beginning as God. He had a beginning

  76. as a man. This was one of the things

  77. that was hard for people even Jewish

  78. people um to believe and understand.

  79. They remember the Pharisees and and the

  80. Jews, you know, they were thought they

  81. were chosen of God and they were. They

  82. thought they were privileged. They had

  83. the word of God. They had the teachers

  84. and and all these things. Yet, when it

  85. was time for their Messiah to come,

  86. that's what verse says over there in

  87. verse 10. He was in the world. The world

  88. was made by him and the world knew him

  89. not. He came into his own and his own

  90. received him not. So you know this he

  91. knew

  92. was going to happen. This John uh shares

  93. with us as well and Jesus told him

  94. before Abraham was I am. So before any

  95. man like Abraham existed and that's what

  96. they thought. Well you know you got to

  97. we go way back to Genesis 12 when we

  98. find Abraham and Jesus says I'm I'm way

  99. before Genesis 12.

  100. He's always been. And that's the way

  101. John starts out for us here. We as well

  102. looked at his sinlessness. Jesus never

  103. he never made a mistake. He never

  104. sinned.

  105. Um he was the sinless one of God. That

  106. you know, God can't sin. So as as you

  107. know, as the God man, he did not sin.

  108. And that was the testimony of his

  109. apostles as well. We looked at those

  110. things. We looked at his preeminence in

  111. Colossians 1:17. There, you know, he is

    Colossians 1:17

  112. the preeminent one. He's above all.

  113. And look over in John 6

  114. and verse 69. John 6 verse 69.

    John 6:69

  115. And here

  116. we have him

  117. Here

  118. we have uh Peter's confession of him.

  119. You know, if anyone knew Jesus, it was

  120. his apostles.

  121. You know, so he if he said he was a

  122. sinless one, he was God. You know, they

  123. they were the ones to say, "Well, no,

  124. you're not the sinless one. You you

  125. sinned over here. You sinned over

  126. there."

  127. But not the case. They they testified to

  128. the what he testified to that he is the

  129. son of God. He is the son of man.

  130. He's the one from heaven and he brought

  131. all these great things down to us in the

  132. earth. And here Peter says uh and we

  133. believe and that was a whole bunch of

  134. the apostles. We believe and we are sure

  135. there was no doubt about who Jesus is

  136. and was even from those who knew him

  137. best.

  138. You know, they Judas betrayed him um for

  139. for money. Um but everybody else said

  140. and then I think Judas

  141. uh he he might have been convinced

  142. of these things but uh he he met his

  143. fate didn't he and Jesus said it been

  144. better off for him not to even been

  145. born.

  146. So Jesus is the son sinless son of God.

  147. And then at chapter 8

  148. of John, John chapter 8 and verse 29

    John 8 chapter mention

  149. and he that and he that sent me is with

  150. me. So we established that as well that

  151. you know Jesus came from heaven. He was

  152. he was sent by the father. He

  153. volunteered to come to earth uh and to

  154. to die and to pay for our sin.

  155. And the father was aware of these

  156. things. And and in in 1 Peter chapter 2

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  157. 22, don't turn there, but that's where

  158. Peter said he he did neither sin nor was

  159. guile found in his mouth.

  160. I mean, he didn't even,

  161. you know, think a bad thought. He never

  162. said a bad word, even when he was in the

  163. dire of conditions, humanly speaking. So

  164. Jesus was tested. He was he was very

  165. tested by the world, by the devil, by

  166. the Jews, by the Romans, by humanity. He

  167. was put to the test and yet he come

  168. forth as gold.

  169. Turn over to John chapter 11.

    John 11 chapter mention

  170. So once these things were accomplished,

  171. then the apostles come along. You know,

  172. Jesus said, "I want you to preach the

  173. gospel, you know, not not of yourselves

  174. but of me." And this is what the

  175. apostles did. Here in John chapter 11,

    John 11 chapter mention

  176. this is one of my favorite verses. This

  177. one really helped me

  178. understand that Jesus is he's the he's

  179. the way. He's the only way.

  180. and being the God man that he

  181. established to the apostles and to us.

  182. And now we have um these things

  183. contained in the word of God. Remember

  184. what Paul said in 2 Corinthians 5:21.

    2 Corinthians 5:21

  185. For he made him who knew no sin to be

  186. sin for us that we might be made the

  187. righteousness of God in him. So we don't

  188. try to make ourselves righteous.

  189. We trust in him and he makes us

  190. righteous.

  191. And here

  192. in John 11:25, Jesus says he's the life.

    John 11:25

  193. He's life eternal. So we're dead. We're

  194. born dead in trespasses and sins. We're

  195. we come forth from Adam. We come forth

  196. from our from our mother sinning. We we

  197. have to learn to do right, not to do

  198. wrong. We're um we're cursed in that

  199. way.

  200. But Jesus has overcome those things and

  201. now he is the life. And here this is the

  202. just before the resurrection of Lazarus,

  203. the physical resurrection to remind us

  204. that he is the spiritual resurrection

  205. that we so desperately need.

  206. And you know, we're spiritually dead as

  207. a doornail.

  208. um as dead as Lazarus was here. We are

  209. physically going to die someday, but

  210. spiritually we're born dead and we need

  211. we need life. And that's who Jesus is. I

  212. am not somebody else is. Jesus said, "I

  213. am the resurrection and the life." And

  214. then he and then he says it, "He that

  215. believeth in me, though he were dead,

  216. yet shall we live." So we see now that's

  217. faith in this one who is the son of of

  218. god and the son of man. Whosoever lives

  219. and believeth in me shall never die. Do

  220. you believe this? So now it's a faith

  221. thing and a faith that rests in him.

  222. And you know we find out that

  223. you know how great this is that God

  224. become a man. But as well we we know the

  225. things that are true of God are true of

  226. him. You know Jesus is he's never

  227. change. He doesn't ever change. He's the

  228. same yesterday, today and forever as

  229. Hebrews tells us. And as James tells us

  230. that you know God is just unchangeable

  231. and and that that extends to the son of

  232. God to Jesus. So there is just a

  233. unchangeableness of him. There is a

  234. sinlessness of him. There's an eternal

  235. uhness of him. There's a lifegiving uh

  236. that comes from him. So all of these

  237. things he's established with him with

  238. his uh with his apostles in here in the

  239. New Testament for us. Turn back to John

    John 5 chapter mention

  240. chapter 5.

  241. John chapter 5. We're picking these up

    John 5 chapter mention

  242. in John.

  243. You know, and we also looked at Jesus

  244. authority. You know who? That's what the

  245. Pharisee want to know. Well, who in what

  246. authority are you doing this? Well,

  247. Jesus said, "I'm God. I guess I can do

  248. it in my authority.

  249. There's no guessing to it. There's Jesus

  250. answers to no one. It's the other way

  251. around. Everyone answers to him

  252. and and he's made that. He's established

  253. that, you know, so we don't have to

  254. worry about dying and answering to some

  255. other god that we didn't know about. No,

  256. we're all going to answer to Jesus, the

  257. one that we do know about. And all the

  258. other gods, all the other false gods,

  259. all the other false teachers, they're

  260. all going to answer to him. Every knee

  261. will bow, every tongue will confess.

  262. Why? Because Jesus is God. He's not just

  263. a man,

  264. but he is God.

  265. And he has this life in himself and and

  266. he can give it to us when we come to him

  267. by faith. And here in John chapter 5,

    John 5 chapter mention

  268. this is about, you know, resurrecting

  269. people.

  270. Um, you know, that's when we go to the

  271. funeral home,

  272. uh, it's not a very pleasant place to be

  273. unless you're a Christian.

  274. And then, you know, what the, uh, the

  275. death of a saint is pleasant to God. So,

  276. we belong to him and he's arranged it

  277. that we can get out of here and move on

  278. to a place where we'll never have any

  279. more injuries and any more infirmities

  280. and no more no more sin, no more

  281. problems. We're going to be like the

  282. Lord.

  283. >> But we still have to go through this

  284. death process.

  285. And and you know, so did all the

  286. apostles and and then so did Jesus.

  287. Well, if he's God, why in the world did

  288. God die? Well, that's a good question.

  289. God died that we might live.

  290. And Jesus is saying here before he ever

  291. died, you know, he had no doubt. He

  292. wasn't like, well, you know, I hope I I

  293. hope my father raises me from the dead.

  294. We never see anything like that. He

  295. always had the confidence.

  296. He knew his father was going to raise

  297. him from the dead.

  298. and and he saw the apostles saw that.

  299. And here he talks about resurrecting.

  300. Who's going to who's going to empty the

  301. cemeteries? Well, there's only one that

  302. can do that.

  303. And here Jesus says, "Verily, verily."

  304. And that word truly, truly, that's like

  305. amen. Amen. So Jesus is amening his

  306. himself here. The hour is coming and now

  307. is when the dead shall hear the voice of

  308. the son of God. They that hear it shall

  309. live. Now, this is the this is the

  310. spiritual resurrection. Remember, we

  311. were dead like like Lazarus was dead. Uh

  312. we need life. We need life eternal.

  313. We're dead. We're separated from God. We

  314. need the new birth. And Jesus is the one

  315. that can give it to us when we hear his

  316. voice here, the son of God. And they

  317. that hear it will live. So, everyone

  318. that's been born again has heard the

  319. voice of the son of God. Faith comes by

  320. hearing and hearing by the word. And

  321. Jesus says, "For as a father has life in

  322. himself." You know, that's where it goes

  323. back to,

  324. you know, how do we get how do we born

  325. again? How do we get this life? It come

  326. from the trinity. It come from the

  327. father. Come from the son. It comes from

  328. the holy spirit. this eternal life that

  329. he speaks of.

  330. And then he's given uh in verse 27, he's

  331. given him authority to execute judgment

  332. because he is the son of man. So he's

  333. he's over everything now. There's

  334. nothing that Jesus is not over, you

  335. know, not he didn't just, you know, live

  336. here for 33 years. So, you know,

  337. everyone that lived when he lived,

  338. they're responsible and they have to

  339. answer to Jesus. That's not what he

  340. said. He said, "No, every man everywhere

  341. will answer to the authority of the son

  342. of God that the father sent." And Jesus

  343. says, "Marvel not at this. Don't don't

  344. let this uh you get your head around

  345. this. Get your mind around this. Get

  346. your faith resting on this.

  347. The hour is coming when all that are in

  348. the grave shall hear the voice,

  349. and they that shall hear it will come

  350. forth. They that have done good, those

  351. they that have been born again

  352. uh will be it to the resurrection of

  353. life. They that have done evil to the

  354. resurrection of damnation. So Jesus

  355. decides who goes to heaven and who goes

  356. to hell.

  357. It's up to him. And he says those that

  358. believe on him up in verse 25.

  359. So there we have all these amazing

  360. things. So he's going to raise every

  361. single human being that has ever lived.

  362. I don't know how many billion people

  363. that is,

  364. but it's going to be nothing to him.

  365. He's just going to speak and it's going

  366. to happen. His voice, as he said up

  367. there, he he can he can give um the new

  368. birth. He can give resurrection life to

  369. us now through his word and someday he

  370. will to our bodies as well. Go back to

  371. John chapter 16.

    John 16 chapter mention

  372. This made such an impact on the apostles

  373. and back in John chapter 16.

    John 16 chapter mention

  374. If you seen Jesus raise Lazarus from the

  375. dead. If you seen Jesus walk on the

  376. water,

  377. if you seen him do all these miracles,

  378. you would have to say he's the son of

  379. God. But then on top of that, these men

  380. heard him teach and preach, and now they

  381. know why he come to earth.

  382. And that, you know, he is the way, the

  383. truth, and the life. And here we go

  384. having John 16:30.

    John 16:30

  385. What did the apostles do? They rested.

  386. And you're not living

  387. being with your husband now. And he's

  388. like, man, who is this that knows

  389. everything about me?

  390. It's the God. And now the apostles join

  391. in. They say, who is this that knows

  392. everything? It's none other than Jesus,

  393. the son of man and the son of God. We

  394. are sure you know all things. You need

  395. not that any man should ask of thee. By

  396. this we believe and we are uh that you

  397. come forth from God. There's no doubt

  398. here with the apostles. There shouldn't

  399. be any doubt with us either. I mean we

  400. have doubts, don't get me wrong, but

  401. when we read the word of God, we we've

  402. got it. We've got the truth. We have the

  403. way. We have eternal life. You know, all

  404. these things that Jesus said we could

  405. have, he has given them to us. And he

  406. told the apostles that, you know, he

  407. knew the father. He knows the father.

  408. And this is the father's will. And Jesus

  409. said, you can't come to the father but

  410. by me. So the knowledge of the son is

  411. the true treasure as Colossians says

  412. to know who God is.

  413. And like Jesus told the woman at the

  414. well, she said, "He knew he knows me."

  415. And Peter in the boat, remember, Lord,

  416. I'm a sinful man. Because Jesus knew

  417. Peter.

  418. So, everyone that's born again, everyone

  419. that's a child of his, now we got all

  420. can say Jesus knows me.

  421. And that's what Peter said in the

  422. fishing boat. Now, turn back to John

  423. chapter one.

  424. In verse

  425. 18, we've touched on some of his

  426. attributes.

  427. You know, he's God. So, he has the

  428. attributes that God has.

  429. And and one of them here is his

  430. omnipresence.

  431. You know, God is everywhere.

  432. David said that in the Psalms, there

  433. nowhere I can go where God is not

  434. already there.

  435. And Jesus is God. So he is he's

  436. omniresent as well. And here in verse

  437. 18,

  438. we have no man has seen God at any time.

  439. So how do we find all this out?

  440. Did we get get a rocket ship and send it

  441. up into heaven with a crew to go and

  442. explore and find God, find out who he is

  443. and his ways. And I mean, that's all

  444. foolishness.

  445. No, God sent his son to earth. Now we

  446. don't have to wonder. Now we don't have

  447. to look anymore. Now we have what? Here

  448. we have truth and grace. In verse 17,

  449. the law was given by Moses. Grace, grace

  450. and truth came by Jesus Christ. And

  451. again, no man has seen God at any time.

  452. The only begotten who was in the bosom

  453. of the father

  454. has declared him.

  455. So this declaration of the Godhead comes

  456. to us from God the son who is on the

  457. present who left heaven and he came to

  458. earth and became the son of man. And he

  459. was God in the beginning in creation. We

  460. we talked about that. You know that's

  461. the testimony of the scripture over and

  462. over and over. Jesus was there

  463. um when everything was created. He was

  464. there in the garden. He was the, you

  465. know, he's the great I am in the Old

  466. Testament. Jesus is there. And we've

  467. looked at those verses and we've uh

  468. looked at those great things that the

  469. Old Testament said about him. Now, look

  470. over in John chapter 3 and verse 13.

    John 3 chapter mention

  471. This goes along with what John said back

  472. there in John 1:18. Here he says,

    John 1:18

  473. this is Jesus speaking. No man has

  474. ascended up to heaven. You know what

  475. about all these people that say they

  476. went to heaven.

  477. I don't know. I'm going to believe

  478. Jesus. He said no one no one's been up

  479. there. I'm going to stick with him.

  480. And no man needs to go up there

  481. try to figure God out or understand God.

  482. We already have an understanding. We

  483. already have a member of the Godhead

  484. come to earth and and has told us all

  485. about God and has told us all about

  486. ourselves. And now, you know, we know

  487. how things have begun. We know how

  488. things are going and we know how things

  489. are going to end. And Jesus said he's

  490. going to bring an end to them.

  491. And in verse 13 here, he says, "No man

  492. has ascended up to heaven, but he that

  493. come down from heaven, even the son of

  494. man who is in heaven." You see, is

  495. omniresence. He's still in heaven. He's

  496. on the earth, but he's still in heaven.

  497. He has a knowledge that, you know, they

  498. they know nothing of.

  499. And and John Calvin said that he was

  500. incarnate, but he was never

  501. incarcerated,

  502. you know. So Jesus could go anywhere he

  503. wanted to go, do anything he wanted to

  504. do. He's God as long as it was his

  505. father's will.

  506. So now we have a a living presence

  507. um with him. you know things if you

  508. understand where we were before the

  509. cross and you understand what Jesus did

  510. at the cross and you understand the new

  511. birth now and and the privilege we have

  512. the understanding we have to worship God

  513. and to praise God for all the things

  514. that Jesus did for us then you know he

  515. has just a living presence with us. I'll

  516. turn over to Matthew chapter 18

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  517. where he told us that.

  518. Matthew chapter 18.

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  519. Yeah, we don't have to go looking for

  520. him.

  521. He's here.

  522. And that's what he told his apostles.

  523. You know, they were they were really

  524. concerned that he was going to go away.

  525. They didn't understand why he was going

  526. away.

  527. And you know that's

  528. that's the the understanding we need of

  529. the cross is it was for our good.

  530. And and even Peter didn't want him to

  531. go. Lord, you know I'm not going to let

  532. that happen to you. And and Peter

  533. grabbed Jesus and rebuked him. Remember

  534. you're not going to the cross, Lord. And

  535. Jesus said, get thee behind me, Satan.

  536. you know, that's uh an attempt to to

  537. throw him off the father's path. And and

  538. it's a good thing that Jesus died for

  539. us. It's not a bad thing. It's a

  540. wonderful thing that he bore our sin

  541. before the father. And here he says in

  542. chapter 18 verse 20,

  543. for where two or three are gathered

  544. together in my name, there am I in the

  545. midst of them. So,

  546. you know, here we are 2,000 years later

  547. and this is, you know, this is still

  548. true. You know, we don't have to beg him

  549. to be with us. You know, he's he's

  550. already here. He's already there. He

  551. already exists. He's eternal. He's the

  552. son of God. He's the son of man. He's

  553. the word of God.

  554. So, you know, that's the power in the

  555. word. That's the power. He's the power

  556. in our lives, his name. He's the power

  557. when we get together.

  558. So, we have this living uh presence with

  559. him. Did he say that's going to change?

  560. No. If you're born again, you're never

  561. going to be separated from Jesus. It's

  562. only going to get better. Turn to

  563. Matthew 18.

  564. And that's what the apostles struggled

  565. with. Lord, you're gone away. What What

  566. are we going to do? And Jesus said,

  567. you're going to remember some of these

  568. things after I'm gone, but my presence

  569. is with you always.

  570. And that's what he tells them here in

  571. Matthew 28. So, we have a sinlessness.

  572. We have his omnipresence. We have all

  573. these great eternal things. He's he's

  574. life. He's light. He's all these things.

  575. We We even have his authority to go

  576. forth. We have his presence with us. All

  577. these wonderful things, you know, and

  578. nothing's going to change. You're never

  579. going to be separated from the love of

  580. God in Christ ever

  581. in this life or in the life to come.

  582. So that should bring us great comfort.

  583. And here he says, "All authority is

  584. given unto me in heaven and earth."

  585. What else is there?

  586. This is after his resurrection.

  587. You know, this is just before his

  588. ascension. This is where he told the

  589. apostles, "Everything I said to you is

  590. going to come to pass." You know, and

  591. they written all these things down for

  592. us. No one's going to overthrow Jesus.

  593. No one.

  594. The devil tried. The angels, fallen

  595. angels tried, men have tried.

  596. It's it's uh it's a waste of time

  597. because all authority is given in heaven

  598. and earth to him. And now we have his

  599. presence and now he wants us to go and

  600. do what?

  601. Teach all nations.

  602. Not just the Jewish nation, not just

  603. America, but all nations.

  604. Teaching all nations. Baptizing them in

  605. the name of the Father, the Son, and the

  606. Holy Spirit. The great Trinity. There's

  607. the Godhead.

  608. So, we have the presence of Jesus. We

  609. have the presence of the father. We have

  610. the presence of the Holy Spirit. We have

  611. the word of God. We have the new birth.

  612. Our sins have been paid for. We have the

  613. presence of Jesus. We have all these

  614. things that we might uh do what he says

  615. in verse 20, teaching them to observe

  616. all things, whatever I have commanded

  617. you. And lo, there's what we want. I am

  618. with you always. Where can we go to be

  619. separated from Jesus? Nowhere. You know,

  620. he's he's made that clear.

  621. And then in you remember in Acts chapter

  622. nine, we don't need to turn there. this

  623. same Jesus, he he shows up there um and

  624. and uh

  625. to the Apostle Paul

  626. and Paul is out murdering Christians and

  627. doing great damage to the church.

  628. And then Jesus confronts him and and and

  629. one of the worst enemies of the church

  630. is converted and made one of the best

  631. apostles ever

  632. for the church. How could that have

  633. happened if he's not alive? How could

  634. that not have happened if all these

  635. things he said aren't true?

  636. And Paul knew it as well. And Paul, he

  637. preached it himself. So, you know, Paul

  638. said Jesus is alive forever more. Thomas

  639. said, "My Lord and my God, he's alive

  640. forever more." Peter said, "Jesus is

  641. alive forever more." Mary and the

  642. Magdalene and all the ladies at the

  643. tomb, Jesus is alive forever more.

  644. No one can get in his way. No one can

  645. throw him off

  646. and go back to John chapter one.

  647. So that's how John starts out

  648. is with the deity of Christ. This one

  649. who came, all the things he said, all

  650. the promises that he made, all the work

  651. that he did on the earth, um we have

  652. greatly benefited from it.

  653. And now he says in verse three,

  654. all things were made by him and without

  655. him was not anything made that was made.

  656. So,

  657. so here we see that Jesus, the one who

  658. rose from the dead, the one who seated

  659. at the right hand of the father, you

  660. know, he was there in creation. He was

  661. there in Genesis chapter 1 when uh when

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  662. God made everything. You know, Jesus, he

  663. was there participated in those things.

  664. And we already read verse 10, he made

  665. the world. The world was made by him and

  666. the world knew him not. So, you know,

  667. you say, well, if he was God, certainly

  668. the world would have known him.

  669. Well, they didn't. The Jews didn't know

  670. him either, you know, and and and it's

  671. still so the only way you can know God

  672. is through his son. The only way.

  673. That's why Jesus said he's the light,

  674. true light in verse 9 to come into the

  675. world,

  676. you know. So,

  677. you know, it's the same now for us.

  678. Colossians 1:16 that we've already

    Colossians 1:16

  679. looked at. He says, "For by him was

  680. everything made uh in heaven and in

  681. earth, visible and invisible." You

  682. can't, you know, what is it that we're

  683. leaving out? What is it that we're not

  684. talking about? Where is the corner of

  685. creation? Where's the corner of the

  686. universe? Where's the time in the

  687. universe where he is not over it? And it

  688. will all answer to him. He said that

  689. before his death on the cross and his

  690. resurrection. He said it after. He said

  691. it since. Read the book of Revelation.

  692. You know, there he uh he's the judge

  693. now, the great Messiah

  694. um who come to earth. Hebrews 1 says he

  695. upholds all things by his power. So, not

  696. only did he create everything, now he is

  697. upholding all things by his power. So,

  698. there's not a molecule or an atom

  699. anywhere

  700. that will not answer to Jesus.

  701. And he says invisible and visible, you

  702. know, we can only see the visible, you

  703. know, so okay, the visible is going to

  704. answer to Jesus. Well, Jesus said the

  705. invisible is going to answer to me, too.

  706. And Paul said in John, excuse me, in

  707. Ephesians 6, all the principalities and

  708. powers in in heavenly places, you know,

  709. this this group of angels that's

  710. rebelled and trying to overthrow God,

  711. every one of them is going to answer to

  712. Jesus

  713. someday and someday soon.

  714. And in the meantime, our purpose down

  715. here is First John 4 talks about, you

  716. know, we're to love God. We're to love

  717. our neighbor. You know, we we have

  718. everything pertaining to life. We have

  719. everything pertaining to eternal life.

  720. You know, God will never leave us nor

  721. forsake us. Jesus presence is with us

  722. where two or three are gathered

  723. together. You know, all those wonderful

  724. things. Now,

  725. so now we ask the question, well then,

  726. who can forgive sin? Turn over to Mark

    Mark 2 chapter mention

  727. chapter 2.

  728. Mark

    Mark 2 chapter mention

  729. Chapter 2

  730. and verse 5.

  731. Mark chapter 2 and verse 5.

    Mark 2 chapter mention

  732. You know this is

  733. you know the part that you know the

  734. apostles believe

  735. you know that the things they said about

  736. Jesus. We're sure you're God. You're

  737. sure. We're sure of that.

  738. And you know that's the great thing

  739. about knowing that Jesus is God is that

  740. we can you know we can follow him and

  741. and you know hear what he says and be be

  742. under his teaching be under uh him being

  743. our shepherd and being under his

  744. authority being where two or three are

  745. gathered together you know he's there in

  746. the midst you know we have to go and

  747. teach all men all those great and

  748. wonderful things he has asked us to do.

  749. The greatest thing is that we have the

  750. forgiveness of our sins,

  751. you know, and that's what he meant when

  752. when Peter said, "You're not going to

  753. the cross. I'm not going to let that

  754. happen." And Jesus said, "Get thee

  755. behind me, Satan." Because he was trying

  756. to stop Jesus from paying for our sins.

  757. And that's the very thing that Jesus

  758. come to earth to do and more.

  759. But you know what is all this without

  760. the forgiveness of our sin?

  761. You know, we're we're terrible sinners.

  762. We're separated from God. We're going to

  763. get into

  764. to our depravity

  765. uh in a future message.

  766. But Romans says, "Where sin did abound,

  767. grace did much more abound."

  768. And it's the work of God's son that we

  769. can now have the forgiveness of sins.

  770. And here in Mark 2 and five, we have

  771. and Jesus saw their faith. Don't forget

  772. that.

  773. You know, that's what Jesus is looking

  774. for. He's looking for faith in him and

  775. faith in his word, faith in what he has

  776. said.

  777. That's what he wants us to do.

  778. And you know, faith is the way now that

  779. we can be forgiven. And when he saw

  780. their faith, he said to the sick of the

  781. Pauly, "Son, your sins are forgiven

  782. thee."

  783. I mean, this is a great thing

  784. for somebody on earth to tell somebody

  785. else on earth that your sins are

  786. forgiven.

  787. This is a big deal.

  788. But there were certain of the scribes

  789. sitting there and they were reasoning in

  790. their hearts.

  791. Here's his omnipresence. They didn't

  792. even have to speak. He knew what was in

  793. their heart.

  794. He says, "Why does this man thus speak

  795. blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but

  796. God only?"

  797. So those people that say Jesus never

  798. said he was God, my friends, right here,

  799. he not only says he's God, but he can

  800. forgive sin. If he wasn't God, if he

  801. couldn't forgive sin, this would be

  802. blasphemy. We're we're following a

  803. blaspher.

  804. But not true. He is God. He is not a

  805. blaspher. He is the one who can forgive

  806. sin. the sinless one, the eternal one.

  807. And he says here, "And immediately when

  808. Jesus perceived in his spirit that they

  809. so reasoned within themselves, God knows

  810. our thoughts. If Jesus is not God, how

  811. does he know their thoughts?"

  812. That should have convinced him.

  813. And he said why you reason these things

  814. in your heart which is easier to say

  815. to the sick of the pulsey thy sins are

  816. forgiven thee or say arise and walk take

  817. up your bed

  818. you know this is the important thing for

  819. us to see here

  820. you know because I mean we have a lot of

  821. people that are handicapped out there I

  822. don't even that might not even be the

  823. right word but but are sick like this

  824. have some kind of an infirmity physical

  825. um

  826. mental,

  827. you know, and and we all have things

  828. like that, but there are some, you know,

  829. they're just, you know, they're just

  830. bedfast

  831. and Jesus heals him.

  832. I don't think anyone can do that except

  833. him. That should have convinced him he

  834. was God.

  835. But the greater thing here is not

  836. healing the man of his pausy

  837. is forgiving sin. That's the greater

  838. thing. So Jesus puts something that's

  839. great here against something that's

  840. greater. So we can see

  841. it's better for us to have the

  842. forgiveness of sin than it is to be fil

  843. uh healed physically.

  844. We have our priorities wrong. Sometimes

  845. I'm not saying that we shouldn't help

  846. them and want that and pray for that.

  847. But when it comes, you know, to the

  848. physical, to the spiritual, the greater

  849. is the gift of eternal life through the

  850. son of God, through the son of man. He

  851. He can do that.

  852. Jesus can forgive you and he can forgive

  853. me if we come to him by faith. He said

  854. to the sick of the Pauly, and I say unto

  855. thee, rise, take up your bed, go your

  856. way into your house. This particular guy

  857. got both.

  858. He was made well physically

  859. and he was made well spiritually

  860. by God,

  861. the son of God. Who who who can do it?

  862. Verse seven, who can forgive sin but God

  863. only? And Jesus is God.

  864. So he being God then he being all the

  865. things that we looked at all the things

  866. that we have seen that he has said is he

  867. has the authority to forgive sins.

  868. That's what he said at the end of

  869. Matthew. All authority is given to me.

  870. Who can forgive sin but Jesus only?

  871. You know and and then he hands this off

  872. to his apostles. Turn over to to uh

  873. Matthew chapter 26.

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  874. back a couple pages, Matthew.

  875. And you know, this is where we are. You

  876. know, we don't have the power to do

  877. this.

  878. Um, the church doesn't have the power to

  879. forgive sin.

  880. I don't care what any church says or how

  881. much they charge you. I don't care how

  882. many priests, earthly priests, they

  883. have.

  884. Uh, no human being can forgive sin. No

  885. church can forgive sin.

  886. The only person who can forgive sin is

  887. God and God alone. Jesus just said that.

  888. So then how do we come to find this

  889. forgiveness? We have to come the way the

  890. apostles came. We come by faith. We have

  891. to come the way the man sick with the

  892. policy came. He came by faith.

  893. And when we come by faith, we receive

  894. this great gift that God has given to

  895. us. This forgiveness of our sins. And

  896. this is what the apostles preached. This

  897. is what he gave them.

  898. And this is why we gather at the Lord's

  899. table to remember this very thing.

  900. Who can forgive sin? Well, there's only

  901. one and it's God and that's Christ. And

  902. here in verse 26

  903. or excuse me, yeah, verse 26, chapter

  904. 26.

  905. And as they were eating,

  906. Jesus took bread and he blessed it and

  907. he broke it and he gave it unto them. He

  908. said, "Take, eat. This is my body." This

  909. would be blasphemy if he wasn't God.

  910. And they took up the cup, they gave

  911. thanks, and he gave it to them. He said,

  912. "Drink ye all of it."

  913. And here's what we want. For this is my

  914. blood of the new covenant which is shed

  915. for many. For what reason? for the

  916. remission of sin.

  917. Why did Jesus come? Why did Jesus live?

  918. Why did Jesus die? That we might have

  919. the forgiveness of our sins. And the

  920. only way is to trust in him is to come

  921. to him by faith. Verse 29, I say unto

  922. you, I will not drink hence for fruit of

  923. the vine until the day which I drink it

  924. with you a new in my father's kingdom.

  925. So, you know, the forgiveness that we

  926. have through Jesus is going to take us

  927. all the way to his father's kingdom.

  928. Who can forgive sin? Well, God alone.

  929. Turn to Luke 24.

  930. You know, these things happened. This is

  931. what ended Jesus earthly life.

  932. You know, his everything else was great.

  933. We know we're looking at it. It's so

  934. important. But there's nothing greater

  935. than this.

  936. You know, you can look at the miracles

  937. of Jesus and miss this. You can look at

  938. the life of Jesus and miss this.

  939. But he and he alone can forgive us for

  940. our sins. And here

  941. in Luke

  942. 24 and verse 47,

  943. I'll start in verse 46. Thus it is

  944. written

  945. and thus it behooved Christ to suffer

  946. and to rise from the dead the third day.

  947. This is what we need to get. Why did

  948. that happen?

  949. That repentance and the remission of sin

  950. should be preached in his name among all

  951. the nations beginning at Jerusalem. So

  952. you see, God's still the only one that

  953. can forgive sin. And we have to come to

  954. God through him and through his death

  955. for for us and the payment of our sin.

  956. And we can preach this

  957. this gospel of grace, this repentance,

  958. this remission of sin that that God died

  959. for our sins. God shed his blood for our

  960. sin.

  961. This is what John the Baptist meant when

  962. he said, "Behold the lamb of God that

  963. taketh away the sin of the world."

  964. That's why Jesus came, take away the sin

  965. of the world.

  966. And then, you know, these men that wrote

  967. the New Testament, I mean, that's their

  968. testimony. Like, you know, John the

  969. Baptist, you know, behold the lamb of

  970. God that takes away the sin of the

  971. world. Peter in Acts chapter 10 and

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  972. verse 43, Peter says a similar thing in

  973. Colossians 1:14, Paul says a similar

    Colossians 1:14

  974. thing in 1 John 1:7. Let's go to this

    1 John 1:7

  975. one. 1 John 1:7.

    1 John 1:7

  976. Our sins are so paid for now. All we

  977. need to do is confess them to the

  978. Father.

  979. And we still have them, don't we? That's

  980. what he says. You say you don't have

  981. sin, you're a liar.

  982. We're We still sin

  983. even after we're saved.

  984. What are we to do? Do we have to get

  985. saved again?

  986. No.

  987. The new birth is just a one-time thing.

  988. Make sure you've been born again. Make

  989. sure you've been uh you've come to him

  990. and you've received the remission for

  991. your sins, the payment for your sins

  992. through Christ. He's the way, the truth,

  993. and the life. Um John 3:16, for God so

    John 3:16

  994. loved the world that he gave his only

  995. begotten son that whosoever believeth in

  996. him will not perish, but have

  997. everlasting life. Make sure you've come

  998. to God the Father through his son and

  999. receive the forgiveness of sin.

1000. All your sins were laid on Jesus. All my

1001. sins were laid on Jesus. He paid for

  1002. them all.

  1003. So now we have

  1004. what John says here

1005. in chapter 1 verse 5. This then is the

1006. message. You know, John writes this

  1007. after his gospel.

1008. You know, he's um you know, he knows now

  1009. why Jesus came.

1010. Now we know why he came.

1011. You know the we have his life in the

1012. gospels. We have his birth. We have his

1013. life. We have his death. We have all

1014. those things. But if we don't know why,

1015. we don't know if we don't see him dying

1016. for our sins, we've missed it.

1017. And John says this is the message that

1018. we heard from him. Where did John get

1019. it? Did he think this up? No. Jesus

1020. said, "What I give you, I've received

1021. from my father. What I give you, I've

1022. received from heaven. Now, this is the

1023. message from heaven. This is not the

  1024. message from the apostles

1025. and we declare it to you and that's what

1026. we do. That's what that's our job is to

1027. declare what God has said and God has

  1028. done.

1029. That God is light and in him is no

  1030. darkness at all.

1031. If we say that we have fellowship with

1032. him and walk in darkness, we lie not and

1033. do not the truth. You can't, you know,

1034. say, "I'm abiding in God and I'm walking

1035. in darkness." That's what some people

  1036. try to do.

  1037. You're not, you're not being truthful.

1038. You don't know the truth.

1039. And if we walk in the light as he is in

1040. the light, that's where God wants us.

1041. Walking in his word, walking in his

  1042. ways,

1043. learning more about him, studying these

1044. things, these great things about God.

1045. Who can forgive sin but God only?

1046. We walk in the light. That's light.

1047. He is in the light and we have

1048. fellowship one with another. And the

1049. blood of Jesus Christ the son cleanses

1050. us from all sin. Not our confessing, not

  1051. our remembering,

1052. but the blood of Jesus cleanses us from

  1053. all our sin.

1054. And for those who think they're sinless

  1055. after you're saved, you're wrong.

1056. Because if we say we have no sin, we

1057. deceive ourselves and the truth is not

1058. in it. So even after we're saved, we're

1059. going to slip and we're going to sin.

1060. It's going to happen. I mean, you know,

1061. a thought, a wrong thought is sin. You

1062. don't even have to do the deed. Remember

1063. the people that their their thoughts and

1064. Jesus saw their thoughts. God sees our

  1065. thoughts

1066. and the truth is not in us. If we

  1067. confess our sins,

1068. who is faithful and just? Not us, but

1069. God. He is faithful and just to forgive

1070. us our sins and then to go on to cleanse

1071. us from all unrighteousness. And that's

1072. what the word of God does. Jesus said,

1073. "You're clean through the word that I

1074. spoken unto you." So that's what we

1075. need. We need God's word in us to to

1076. sanctify us and to help us with these

  1077. things.

1078. One man said this about this subject. He

1079. said if he could forgive the sins of

1080. others because he himself was to pay the

  1081. price of their abolition.

1082. That's why Jesus can forgive us. He paid

1083. the price. Who can overthrow him? That's

1084. what Romans 8 says. Who's going to

1085. overthrow God? Go to Romans chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

1086. So this is what Paul preached. This is

1087. what Paul declared after Jesus

1088. accomplished these things and went to

1089. heaven. And and here we are years later

1090. and Paul writes the letter to the Romans

1091. and he says right here in Romans chapter

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  1092. 5,

1093. we can't clean ourselves up. God didn't

1094. say, you know, get yourself cleaned up

1095. and then you can come to me.

1096. That's not the way this works. We come

1097. to him. He does the cleaning up.

1098. In Romans chapter 5, yeah, we we're

    Romans 5 chapter mention

1099. we're we catch the fish. He cleans the

  1100. fish.

1101. That's the wonderful thing about the

  1102. gospel.

1103. We're justified by faith in verse one.

1104. No other way. Not by works

1105. uh that we have done or anyone else has

1106. done. Not by our money, not by our

1107. wealth, not by our position,

1108. none of those things will work. And this

1109. is the only thing God accepts.

1110. We're justified by faith. We have peace

1111. with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

1112. There's nothing but wrath outside of

  1113. him.

1114. And he says here, we have access by

1115. faith into his grace. So we're standing

1116. in grace. That's what we need. So when

1117. we confess our sin to God, we are

1118. standing in God's grace, not in our

  1119. merit.

1120. What a section this is. But look down at

1121. verse 11 or excuse me, verse 7. For

1122. scarcely for a righteous man would one

1123. die, yet perhaps for a good man, some

1124. would even dare to die. That's what

  1125. happened.

1126. Somebody died in our place. Not just a

1127. good man, but a righteous man, a holy

1128. man, the son of God, the son of man. the

1129. sinless one, the eternal one, the one

1130. filled with life, the one who rose from

  1131. the dead.

1132. It is he who died for our sins and we

1133. might have eternal life. And then verse

  1134. 11,

1135. and not not only so, but we also join

1136. God through Jesus by whom we have now

1137. received the reconciliation. So it just

1138. keeps going on. We don't have to be born

1139. again and then born again and born again

1140. and born again and born again and born

1141. again and born again and then right

1142. before you die make sure you get born

1143. again. That's not the way this works.

  1144. Once.

1145. How many times were you born

  1146. physically? Once.

1147. And yeah, we may have, you know,

1148. wandered off from that or we may

1149. question that or we we have all had

1150. issues on our side, but there's no issue

  1151. on God's side.

  1152. come to him

1153. and be reconciled to God through the

  1154. death of his son.

1155. And that's what Paul says in Romans 8.

  1156. And I'll quit. Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

1157. there is there in verse one. There is

  1158. therefore now no condemnation

1159. to them that are in Christ. So here's

1160. the question. Are you in Christ? That's

  1161. the question.

1162. And if you can say, "Yes, I'm in Christ

1163. through the new birth. I've received the

1164. remission of sins." Then there's no

1165. condemnation resting on you. There's

1166. only the love of God. You're not at war

  1167. with God anymore.

1168. And you sign the peace treaty when you

  1169. trusted his son.

1170. And then verse 31, here's the who can

1171. forgive sin? Well, God alone.

1172. Who can keep us in the love of Christ?

  1173. God alone.

1174. Who can keep on doing these things? God

  1175. alone.

1176. And here we have it in verse 31. What

1177. shall we say then to these things

1178. that you try to get me to doubt my

1179. salvation? You try to get me to not

1180. believe God. Well, God died for me. I

  1181. know I'm secure. I know I have this

1182. love. I know there's no condemnation now

1183. because I've been reconciled to God

1184. through the blood of his son. And he

1185. says, if I confess my sin, he will he's

1186. faithful and just to forgive me.

1187. And that's what he says here. He that

1188. spared not his own son shall he deliver

1189. him up for us. All house are not with

1190. him freely. Don't miss that.

1191. Give us all things. When God gave us his

1192. son, he gave us everything we needed

1193. for this uh eternal life that we have.

1194. So God and God alone can forgive sin.

1195. And Jesus is God. And and remember what

1196. the argument in Acts about the the pork

1197. and and between Peter and Paul and Paul

1198. said, "What God has made clean, let no

1199. one call a cursed." And that's who we

1200. are. Those of us who have been born

1201. again, those of us who have the

1202. remission of sin through Christ, we

1203. rested our faith and our trust in him.

1204. That's what we have. We've been made

1205. clean by him and this great gift that he

1206. offered through his son. Let's pray.

1207. Father, we thank you this morning

1208. for this incredible gift of your son

1209. that we so desperately need and we still

  1210. need.

1211. And we confess our sins. We fall short

1212. of the glory of God

1213. every day. You should mark sin. Who

1214. could stand? none of us. But we have

1215. your son. We have a savior. We have a

1216. redeemer. We have a mediator. We have an

  1217. advocate who is God.

1218. And to him, all these things have been

1219. given. And you have forgiven us through

1220. your wonderful son. We pray for others

1221. that come through your son and receive

1222. this great forgiveness for our sins. Our

1223. sins are great, but your grace is

1224. greater. Your love is greater. Our

1225. savior is greater. and we thank you for

1226. these things. Bring comfort to our

  1227. hearts

1228. uh in these last days of the church. We

1229. pray in Jesus name. Amen.

  1230. >> Good morning.

  1231. >> Morning Martha.

1232. Did you go to that wedding?

  1233. >> Yeah.

  1234. >> How was it?

  1235. >> It went well.

  1236. >> Did it?

  1237. >> Oh, yeah.

  1238. one.

  1239. >> Yeah.

  1240. >> And that's how I grad,

  1241. trusting you more.

1242. May the power of your love and the light

1243. of your word shine to a sin darkened

1244. world as we go from this place.
