  1. Good morning, it's wonderful to worship with you.

  2. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Sean, and I'm one of the pastors of Trinity

  3. King's Church, and it's my joy and privilege to preach God's word to you this morning.

  4. We are in the book of Revelation, we've been here for some months.

  5. Return to chapter 15 with me.

  6. If you don't have a Bible, please raise your hand, we'd love to bring a copy for you to

  7. have as a gift from us to you.

  8. Revelation is the last book in the Bible, it should be easier to find.

  9. Revelation chapter 15, we'll go through the whole chapter, but it's a short chapter, verses

    Revelation 15 chapter mention

  10. 1 to 8.

  11. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  12. Heavenly Father, we come once again to a sobering passage, but won't you please impress upon

  13. our hearts?

  14. How high is your glory?

  15. And how deep and dark is our sinfulness?

  16. So that we might understand how your holiness and your righteousness expresses itself in wrath

  17. and judgment.

  18. And as we are confronted with that terrible, the terrifying reality, won't you drive all

  19. of us who are in unrepentant sin to repentance?

  20. So that we might be recipients not of wrath, but of mercy.

  21. Exalt the grace and mercy that you've revealed to us in Jesus Christ in our minds and our hearts

  22. this morning.

  23. In Jesus' name we pray.

  24. Amen.

  25. Amen.

  26. We stand to honor the reading of God's words.

  27. Please stand if you are able.

  28. Revelation chapter 15, verse 1 to 8.

    Revelation 15 chapter mention

  29. God's holy word for us.

  30. Then I saw another sign in heaven, great and amazing.

  31. Seven angels with seven plagues, which are the last.

  32. For with them the wrath of God is finished.

  33. And I saw what appeared to be a sea of glass mingled with fire.

  34. And also those who had conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name standing

  35. beside the sea of glass with harps of God in their hands.

  36. And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying,

  37. Great and amazing are your deeds, O Lord God, the Almighty.

  38. Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations.

  39. Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name?

  40. For you alone are holy.

  41. All nations will come and worship you.

  42. For your righteous acts have been revealed.

  43. After this, I looked, and the sanctuary of the tent of witness in heaven was opened.

  44. And out of the sanctuary came the seven angels with the seven plagues,

  45. clothed in pure bright linen, with golden sashes around their chests.

  46. And one of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels seven golden bowls full of the wrath of God,

  47. who lives forever and ever.

  48. And the sanctuary was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from His power.

  49. And no one could enter the sanctuary until the seven plagues of the seven angels were finished.

  50. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  51. May be seated.

  52. May be seated.

  53. If we believe that God is the God of love,

  54. we must also necessarily believe that God is the God of wrath.

  55. God's love for His people blazes out in fiery wrath toward those who oppress His people.

  56. In order to save Israel from their slavery in Egypt, God must smite the Egyptians with the plagues.

  57. And if God did not have wrath toward sin and sinners, He would not be worthy of our worship.

  58. Because the wrath of God reveals the righteousness or the justice of God.

  59. Romans 2.5 says,

  60. The unrepentance, the unrepentance, the impenitence, the recurring sin, the lingering sin in our midst, in our hearts,

  61. it gets stored up as wrath until the day of God's judgment, His righteous judgment.

  62. And so we see here that the wrath of God is proportionate to the sinfulness of humanity.

  63. And righteous anger is the appropriate response to evil.

  64. Imagine if you have a child in school and your child is being bullied in the classroom viciously,

  65. and the teacher sees it and does nothing about it.

  66. That's not kindness.

  67. That's callous indifference.

  68. That's or cowardice.

  69. If a wrongdoer is let off free by a judge who should be sentencing evildoers,

  70. that is not mercy.

  71. That's injustice.

  72. Imagine if a drunk driver wrecked your car and killed your loved one,

  73. and then the judge said,

  74. It was just an accident.

  75. They're good people.

  76. Just forget about it.

  77. Because that's not mercy.

  78. That's injustice.

  79. We tend, I think, as people, to misunderstand the wrath of God

  80. because we fundamentally misunderstand what humans are like on the one hand

  81. and what God is like on the other hand.

  82. We misunderstand humans in that we think that we humans are intrinsically good.

  83. And relatedly, we think that because we are intrinsically good,

  84. that most people are basically good people.

  85. If they do bad things, it's because of their unhealthy environment

  86. or because of the oppressive systems or because of miseducation.

  87. When you think of people that way as basically good people or intrinsically good,

  88. then God's wrath against them is going to seem unwarranted and disproportionate.

  89. But that's not what the Bible teaches.

  90. Human beings are not intrinsically good.

  91. We are intrinsically evil.

  92. Ephesians 2.1 teaches that we are by default dead in trespasses and sins.

  93. Romans 3.10-11 says that none is righteous.

  94. No, not one.

  95. No one understands.

  96. No one seeks God.

  97. Now, this is the natural state of humanity.

  98. We don't start as good.

  99. Contrary to popular belief, our babies are not angels.

  100. We don't start as good.

  101. We don't even start as neutral.

  102. We start as evil.

  103. We start as sinners.

  104. 2 Timothy 3.13 says,

  105. Evil people and imposters will go on from bad to worse.

  106. This is a natural progression of sinful humanity.

  107. And until that progression is arrested by divine intervention.

  108. We are not basically good people.

  109. We are basically evil people who rightly deserve the wrath of God.

  110. So that's one thing we misunderstand humans.

  111. Another thing we misunderstand is God.

  112. What God is like.

  113. We wrongly assume that God is like us.

  114. Sinful human beings.

  115. And we imagine that God's wrath is the same as man's wrath.

  116. But God's wrath is not irritable or capricious.

  117. God doesn't fly off the handle like man does.

  118. His wrath is not selfish or disproportionate.

  119. It is measured and principled and just.

  120. In fact, the wrath of God, as we see in this passage, reveals the glory of God.

  121. So that the redeemed people of God sing the song of the Lamb.

  122. That's the main point of this passage.

  123. The wrath of God reveals the glory of God.

  124. So that the redeemed people of God sing the song of the Lamb.

  125. This passage is written in the language and imagery of the Exodus.

  126. To convey that this is the ultimate end time deliverance and exodus of God's people from their enemies.

  127. And we can see parallels with the Exodus in the mention of the plagues in verse 1.

  128. The sea in verse 2.

  129. The song of Moses in verses 3 to 4.

  130. And the tent of witness or the tabernacle of witness in verses 5 to 8.

  131. And we'll talk about each of those features in turn.

  132. He says in verse 1.

  133. Then I saw another sign in heaven, great and amazing.

  134. Seven angels with seven plagues, which are the last.

  135. For with them the wrath of God is finished.

  136. The word another sign alludes to the preceding signs that we have seen in the book of Revelation.

  137. And so far we've seen two things that were named as signs.

  138. And so this is the third sign.

  139. The first sign was in Revelation 12, 1 to 2.

  140. And a great sign appeared in heaven.

  141. A woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet.

  142. And on her head a crown of 12 stars.

  143. She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pains and the agony of giving birth.

  144. This recalls Genesis 37, 9 to 10 where Joseph has this dream.

  145. And his sun, moon, and the 11 stars are bowing down to him.

  146. Joseph is presumably the 12th star.

  147. His father is the sun.

  148. His mother is the moon.

  149. And the 12 sons of Jacob or 12 sons of Israel, the 12 tribes of Israel.

  150. So this woman is a picture of the covenant people of God.

  151. And that's why she's pregnant.

  152. It's because out of the covenant people of God that the Messiah is born.

  153. Jesus the Christ, the king, who was the savior of the world.

  154. So she's pregnant.

  155. So at first she is the old covenant people of God.

  156. A symbol of the old covenant people, the Israel.

  157. But as she gives birth to the Messiah, it says in verse 5 of chapter 12,

  158. a male child wants to rule all the nations with the rod of iron.

  159. She then also becomes the new covenant people of God.

  160. And her and her offspring together represent the entire people of God.

  161. That's why in 2 John 1, the church is figuratively referred to as the elect lady and her children.

  162. So this is the church.

  163. That's the first sign.

  164. The second sign was also in Revelation chapter 12, verse 3.

    Revelation 12:3

  165. And another sign appeared in heaven.

  166. Behold, a great red dragon with seven heads and ten horns.

  167. And on his heads were seven diamonds.

  168. This is the dragon that tries to devour the Messiah.

  169. And after failing, makes war on the woman's offspring.

  170. On those who keep the commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus.

  171. And hold on to the testimony of Jesus.

  172. This is the one that was described in chapter 12 as the ancient serpent,

  173. who is called the devil, Satan, the deceiver of the world.

  174. And he's also called the accuser of our brothers.

  175. This is the arch enemy of God's people.

  176. He's the fiend behind all fiends.

  177. This is the dragon that gives his power and authority to the beast with seven heads,

  178. which represents the worldly rulers and the kingdoms that oppose God and persecute his people.

  179. And so this beast is a combination of the four beasts that you find in Daniel 7, Babylon, Persia, Macedonia, and Rome.

  180. And it's a composite picture of all four of those beasts.

  181. So it's the beast of all beasts with seven heads.

  182. Because all those beasts, if you add up their heads, you get seven heads.

  183. And so that was the second sign, the dragon.

  184. Dragon, the enemy of God and his people, and his beast.

  185. So then the first two signs depicted the woman and the dragon.

  186. The church and Satan who are at war with each other.

  187. And if you think about that war,

  188. the outcome seems bleak.

  189. Who wins in a fight between a dragon and a woman.

  190. But here, the Lord God enters the fray,

  191. the other's messengers.

  192. Seven angels with seven plagues,

  193. which are the last,

  194. for with them the wrath of God is finished.

  195. The word plague here doesn't mean what it typically means in English,

  196. like pestilence or an epidemic disease.

  197. The word plague here means blow or strike or wound.

  198. It's the exact same Greek word that's used to describe in the Greek translation,

  199. the Old Testament,

  200. the ten plagues of Egypt.

  201. The ten blows or strikes of Egypt.

  202. So this is the first illusion to Exodus in this chapter.

  203. But this, why is there ten,

  204. not ten plagues like Egypt,

  205. why is there seven?

  206. Because the number seven,

  207. as we've seen over and over again

  208. throughout the book of Revelation,

  209. symbolizes fullness or completion.

  210. Because God completed his creation in the course of seven days.

  211. But not only that,

  212. also because the dragon and the beast,

  213. as I mentioned,

  214. each have seven heads.

  215. The Lord God enters the ring,

  216. so to speak,

  217. and delivers seven fatal blows

  218. to the seven heads of the dragon and the beast.

  219. Seven mortal wounds from which the dragon will never recover.

  220. This is the final fulfillment of the promise of Romans 16, 20,

  221. that God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.

  222. These seven plagues are called the seven bowls,

  223. full of the wrath of God in verse 7.

  224. So this presents the last of the seven series of judgments that we've seen

  225. throughout Revelation.

  226. We saw the seven seals in chapter 6,

  227. that was the first,

  228. and then the seven trumpets in chapters 8 and 9,

  229. and then we saw the seven thunders,

  230. which were not given details about the thunders,

  231. but they were mentioned in chapter 10.

  232. And now we are introduced to the seven bowls,

  233. which will be detailed in chapter 16.

  234. And I've said to you before

  235. that these series of seven judgments

  236. are not meant to be understood

  237. in a linear chronological way.

  238. If you try to interpret that way,

  239. you run into some contradictions and problems

  240. because things that should have already happened

  241. happen again later on in the other judgments.

  242. For example, sun's blackened in the seals,

  243. but then it's again darkened by a third

  244. later on in the trumpet judgments of Revelation 8, 12.

  245. Every mountain and island is removed

  246. in the sixth seal of chapter 6,

  247. but then the island and mountains flee again

  248. in chapter 16.

  249. So these are not meant to be linear chronological events,

  250. but rather they are kind of cyclical.

  251. They're recapitulating the judgment

  252. that happens throughout the church age.

  253. However, they're not endlessly cyclical.

  254. They do have a progression.

  255. They have an end point, a climactic point.

  256. So each seventh judgment,

  257. the seventh seal, the seventh trumpet,

  258. and the seventh bowl all climaxed

  259. with the presence of God,

  260. the full presence and appearance of God in judgment.

  261. And that's accompanied by peals of thunder,

  262. rumblings, flashes of lightning,

  263. and an earthquake.

  264. And John, in order to convey the fact

  265. that the judgments of God,

  266. even though they're presented in this cyclical way here,

  267. that there's a progression

  268. and that they intensify throughout the church age,

  269. he kind of chains these sevens together

  270. in interlocking formation.

  271. So the seventh seal opens the way

  272. for the seven trumpets,

  273. and then the seventh trumpet opens the way

  274. for the seven bowls,

  275. as I've mentioned before,

  276. like the Russian dolls.

  277. You open one and there's another one.

  278. But in Revelation,

  279. it's a reverse Russian doll,

  280. because when you open it,

  281. the doll gets bigger,

  282. and it intensifies.

  283. In the seals,

  284. it's just that the judgments

  285. only affect the fourth of the earth.

  286. In the trumpets,

  287. the judgments affect the third of the earth.

  288. And in the final bowls,

  289. it affects all of the earth.

  290. So it's coming,

  291. crescendoing,

  292. coming to that climactic end point.

  293. It's like the Lord God

  294. who has entered the ring

  295. is circling the dragon,

  296. the enemy,

  297. and gradually narrowing

  298. and narrowing and narrowing

  299. until the dragon has no place to go

  300. before he can inflict the final blow,

  301. the knockdown blow.

  302. And with this,

  303. the bowls,

  304. and Charlie will preach on this

  305. so I won't get into detail next week,

  306. it's the wrath of God is finished.

  307. But the plagues

  308. are not the only thing

  309. that's reminiscent of Exodus.

  310. Verse 2 also mentions a sea,

  311. like the Red Sea of Exodus.

  312. It says in verse 2,

  313. And I saw what appeared to be

  314. a sea of glass mingled with fire.

  315. And also those who had conquered the beast

  316. and its image and the number of its name

  317. standing beside the sea of glass

  318. with harps of God in their hands.

  319. The sea of God is happening back

  320. to the glorious throne vision

  321. that John had in chapter 4

  322. where he said that before the throne of God

  323. there was as it were

  324. a sea of glass like crystal.

  325. It's not a coincidence

  326. that Jewish rabbinic commentary

  327. on Exodus,

  328. Exodus 15.8 for example,

  329. says that God, quote,

  330. froze the Red Sea for them

  331. and he became like vessels of glass.

  332. So this is again an allusion to Exodus.

  333. The sea,

  334. as I've mentioned throughout Revelation,

  335. is a frequent symbol

  336. of cosmic chaos and evil.

  337. So in the Old Testament,

  338. the sea was the abode

  339. of the ancient serpent,

  340. the sea dragon,

  341. Leviathan.

  342. This is why in Revelation 12.17 and 13.1,

  343. both the dragon and his beast,

  344. they emerged from the sea,

  345. out of the sea.

  346. And that's why

  347. when God comes in his final judgment

  348. and brings about the new heavens

  349. and the new earth,

  350. in Revelation 21.1,

  351. he says the sea was no more.

  352. So instead of the sea,

  353. we find here in Revelation 22,

  354. there is the river

  355. of the water of life,

  356. bright as crystal.

  357. That's what we see in the end.

  358. So the sea of glass,

  359. like crystal that we see here

  360. in chapter 15,

  361. is a symbol of God's victory

  362. over evil.

  363. It's a sea that has been frozen

  364. or a sea that has been vanquished

  365. and tranquilized

  366. by the fire of God's judgment.

  367. That's why verse 2 says,

  368. it's a sea of glass

  369. mingled with fire.

  370. It is a serene sea of glass

  371. because there's no longer

  372. any struggle or contest.

  373. The cosmic forces of evil

  374. have been vanquished.

  375. So there's this beautiful

  376. sea of glass,

  377. like crystal underneath

  378. God's feet before his throne.

  379. A crystal, as you know,

  380. is a clear, transparent mineral.

  381. It looks like glass,

  382. it looks like ice.

  383. It reflects light

  384. into resplendent colors.

  385. You might recall

  386. from Exodus 24

  387. that when Moses

  388. and Aaron

  389. and Nadab

  390. and Abihu

  391. and the 70 elders

  392. ascend the mountain

  393. to see the God of Israel,

  394. it says,

  395. they don't get to see

  396. the fullness of God.

  397. They don't get to see

  398. God's face,

  399. but they do get to see

  400. God's feet,

  401. what's underneath

  402. God's feet.

  403. And this is what it says

  404. in Exodus 24.10,

  405. under his feet

  406. as it were a pavement

  407. of sapphire stone,

  408. like the very heaven

  409. for clearness.

  410. Similarly,

  411. in prophet Ezekiel's vision

  412. of the throne room of God,

  413. in Ezekiel 1.22,

  414. he sees the four living creatures

  415. who are attending to God

  416. and serving him,

  417. and over the heads

  418. of the living creatures,

  419. he says,

  420. there was the likeness

  421. of an expanse

  422. shining like awe-inspiring crystal

  423. spread out above their heads.

  424. So I think all of these prophets

  425. are reporting the same

  426. breathtaking vision

  427. of the throne room of God.

  428. Underneath his feet

  429. is a translucent sea

  430. of sapphire blue crystal,

  431. symbol of his conquering

  432. of the sea and the dragon.

  433. And because God has conquered,

  434. all those who belong to him,

  435. his people,

  436. have also conquered.

  437. So it says in verse 2

  438. that John saw those

  439. who had conquered the beast

  440. and its image

  441. and the number of its name

  442. standing beside the sea of glass

  443. with harps of God

  444. in their hands.

  445. Who are these people?

  446. This is the same group

  447. that we saw earlier

  448. in chapter 14,

  449. the 144,000

  450. who are singing a new song

  451. that only those

  452. who have been redeemed

  453. from the earth

  454. can learn and sing.

  455. And he said there

  456. that their voice

  457. was like the sound of harpists

  458. playing on the harps.

  459. And so these are

  460. the saints of God,

  461. the elect from every age,

  462. the church of Christ.

  463. Those who Revelation 12, 11

  464. describe as those

  465. who have conquered the dragon

  466. by the blood of the lamb

  467. and by the word

  468. of their testimony,

  469. for they love not their lives

  470. even unto death.

  471. What does that mean?

  472. Not all faithful Christians

  473. are martyrs,

  474. but they all love Christ

  475. more than life itself.

  476. As Jesus said in John 12, 24-25,

  477. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  478. unless a grain of wheat

  479. falls to the earth and dies,

  480. it remains alone.

  481. But if it dies,

  482. it bears much fruit.

  483. Whoever loves his life

  484. will lose it.

  485. And whoever hates his life

  486. in this world

  487. will keep it for eternal life.

  488. Christians are those people

  489. who are persevering

  490. by the blood of the lamb

  491. and by the word

  492. of their testimony.

  493. They hold on

  494. to the gospel of Jesus

  495. that we are cleansed

  496. and washed

  497. and forgiven

  498. by the blood

  499. of Jesus Christ,

  500. that good news

  501. that Jesus was

  502. the sacrificial lamb

  503. who died on our behalf.

  504. And they also bear testimony

  505. to Jesus

  506. with the word

  507. of their testimony

  508. by sharing that good news

  509. of Jesus Christ

  510. with others.

  511. And because of the dragon

  512. and his beast,

  513. in this world,

  514. we face tribulation

  515. and distress

  516. and persecution

  517. and famine

  518. and nakedness

  519. and danger

  520. and sword.

  521. We're regarded

  522. as sheep to be slaughtered.

  523. But still,

  524. in all these things,

  525. we are more than conquerors

  526. through Jesus

  527. who loved us.

  528. Why?

  529. Because nothing

  530. will be able

  531. to separate us

  532. from the love of God

  533. in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  534. It's from Romans 8.

  535. Even though the beast

  536. might conquer us

  537. temporally in this life,

  538. we will conquer him

  539. eternally.

  540. Our future victory

  541. is seen in the fact

  542. that we are standing

  543. beside a sea of glass

  544. in the throne room of God,

  545. in the very presence of God,

  546. with harps of God

  547. in our hands.

  548. We are not fallen

  549. by the sea.

  550. We are standing

  551. by the sea

  552. in the same way

  553. that the Lamb

  554. who was slain

  555. in chapter 5,

  556. Revelation,

  557. the Lamb who had been slain,

  558. Jesus Christ,

  559. was seen standing

  560. before the presence

  561. of God

  562. in chapter 5.

  563. Likewise,

  564. God's people

  565. will be standing

  566. in resurrection power

  567. in eternity.

  568. And we're not

  569. standing idly by.

  570. We have the harps

  571. of God in our hands.

  572. There are two

  573. primary instruments

  574. that are mentioned

  575. in the book of Revelation.

  576. One is trumpet

  577. and two is harps.

  578. Trumpets,

  579. in view in scripture,

  580. are generally ram's horns,

  581. not like the musical instruments

  582. and the trumpets

  583. that you guys play.

  584. Those are great instruments.

  585. But these trumpets

  586. in the Bible

  587. are not nearly

  588. as versatile or useful.

  589. Their main function

  590. is just being loud.

  591. And so the trumpets

  592. are used

  593. usually in scripture

  594. in the context of war.

  595. trumpet blasts

  596. to threaten

  597. and to warn enemies

  598. you're coming.

  599. Trumpet blasts

  600. to rally your troops

  601. to come.

  602. So it's no surprise

  603. when the trumpet blasts

  604. in Revelation

  605. announce the judgments

  606. of God

  607. over and over again.

  608. Harps, however,

  609. are different.

  610. They have a different purpose.

  611. You never play harps

  612. during war.

  613. Right?

  614. He says in 1 Chronicles 15-16

  615. that the purpose of harps

  616. is to, quote,

  617. raise sounds of joy.

  618. He says in 2 Samuel 6-5

  619. that the purpose of harps

  620. is to celebrate

  621. before the Lord.

  622. The Psalms are full

  623. of exhortations

  624. to praise God

  625. with harps.

  626. So the fact that

  627. the saints of God

  628. are holding harps

  629. in their hands

  630. by that crystal seed

  631. before the throne of God

  632. is a representation

  633. of our victory celebration.

  634. The war will be

  635. finally over

  636. and the trumpet blasts

  637. will cease

  638. and they will give way

  639. to the bright strings

  640. of harps

  641. celebrating our

  642. eternal victory.

  643. And verse 3 says,

  644. they sing the song

  645. of Moses,

  646. the servant of God,

  647. and the song of the Lamb.

  648. Here's yet another allusion

  649. to the Exodus,

  650. Song of Moses.

  651. This is a reference

  652. to Exodus 15,

  653. when after God

  654. delivers his people

  655. out of Egypt

  656. through the Passover

  657. and through the Red Sea

  658. by splitting the Red Sea,

  659. Moses sings his song.

  660. He writes a song

  661. of praise to God

  662. in Exodus 15.

  663. Similarly,

  664. after God delivers

  665. his people

  666. in this ultimate

  667. end time Exodus,

  668. all of the redeemed

  669. will sing

  670. the Song of the Lamb.

  671. This song

  672. is being emphasized,

  673. highlighted in this passage

  674. because it's sandwiched

  675. between the two mentions

  676. of the seven plagues

  677. of God's wrath.

  678. It's a common

  679. literary device

  680. that scripture writers

  681. use to sandwich

  682. an important thing

  683. with two similar things

  684. to highlight it,

  685. like the meat

  686. of the sandwich.

  687. That's the meat.

  688. And it goes like this,

  689. the psalm,

  690. verse 3.

  691. Great and amazing

  692. are your deeds,

  693. O Lord God,

  694. the Almighty.

  695. Just and true

  696. are your ways,

  697. O King of the Nations.

  698. In verse 1,

  699. John said that the signs,

  700. the signs that he saw

  701. of God's seven plague judgments

  702. were great and amazing.

  703. And those exact same words

  704. are used here

  705. in the Song of the Lamb.

  706. Great and amazing

  707. are your deeds.

  708. So there's,

  709. he's connecting

  710. the sign that he saw

  711. to the great deeds of God.

  712. So the song is praising God

  713. for,

  714. specifically for his deeds

  715. of judgment.

  716. And God here is called

  717. the Lord God,

  718. the Almighty,

  719. which highlights

  720. God's absolute sovereignty.

  721. The Lord God is not

  722. somewhat mighty,

  723. but almighty.

  724. The Lord God is not

  725. partially sovereign.

  726. He is totally sovereign.

  727. And this is why

  728. he is declared

  729. and claimed

  730. as the king

  731. of the nations.

  732. Not a king

  733. of one nation.

  734. The king

  735. of all nations.

  736. Verse 3

  737. also praises God

  738. in this way,

  739. just and true

  740. are your ways.

  741. This clause

  742. echoing a couple

  743. different Old Testament

  744. passages.

  745. In Daniel 4,

  746. Babylonian king

  747. Nebuchadnezzar

  748. in his hubris

  749. boasts about how

  750. he in his own might

  751. built his glorious kingdom.

  752. And God

  753. brings him down

  754. a couple of notches

  755. and humbles him

  756. by taking away

  757. his reason

  758. and reducing him

  759. to the state

  760. of animal-like existence

  761. for a period of time.

  762. And after that,

  763. God restores his senses

  764. and when he returns

  765. to his senses,

  766. Nebuchadnezzar

  767. then starts to praise

  768. and extol

  769. and honor

  770. the king of heaven

  771. saying,

  772. for all his works

  773. are right

  774. and his ways

  775. are just

  776. and those who

  777. walk in pride

  778. he is able to humble.

  779. So the connection

  780. here is that

  781. God's ways

  782. are just

  783. and true

  784. in him

  785. humbling the wicked

  786. who have resisted him.

  787. Similarly,

  788. Deuteronomy 32.4

  789. says of God

  790. the rock

  791. his work

  792. is perfect

  793. for all his ways

  794. are justice.

  795. A God of faithfulness

  796. and without iniquity

  797. just and upright

  798. is he.

  799. So in the words

  800. just and true

  801. are primarily

  802. again speaking

  803. of God's justice

  804. and truthfulness

  805. in executing

  806. his judgments.

  807. God is being fair

  808. and just

  809. according to his

  810. unerring standards

  811. and he's being true

  812. to his own

  813. unchanging character

  814. in bringing about

  815. these judgments.

  816. This focus

  817. on the judgments

  818. of God

  819. is confirmed

  820. by Revelation 16.7

  821. and 19.2

  822. both of which

  823. use these exact

  824. same words

  825. and say

  826. true and just

  827. are your judgments.

  828. We

  829. in our

  830. limited

  831. understanding

  832. in our

  833. fallen

  834. sin affected

  835. perspective

  836. might not

  837. always understand

  838. the why

  839. of God's judgments.

  840. Why God?

  841. But we

  842. can trust

  843. who God is

  844. that he's

  845. faithful

  846. and true.

  847. He's always

  848. going to be

  849. true to whom

  850. he's revealed

  851. himself to be

  852. and he's

  853. always going

  854. to be

  855. faithful.

  856. therefore we

  857. can rest

  858. assured that

  859. God will

  860. be an

  861. impartial

  862. and exacting

  863. judge at the

  864. time of the

  865. last assize.

  866. Verse 4

  867. continues the

  868. song of the

  869. Lamb.

  870. Who will

  871. not fear

  872. the Lord

  873. and glorify

  874. your name?

  875. This verse

  876. is an allusion

  877. to Jeremiah

  878. 10, 6-7.

  879. It says,

  880. There is none

  881. like you,

  882. O Lord.

  883. You are

  884. great and

  885. your name

  886. is great

  887. in might.

  888. Who would

  889. not fear

  890. you,

  891. O king of

  892. the nations?

  893. For this

  894. is your

  895. due.

  896. For among

  897. all the

  898. wise ones

  899. of the

  900. nations

  901. and in all

  902. their kingdoms

  903. there is

  904. none like

  905. you.

  906. Fear and

  907. glory are

  908. God's due.

  909. There is

  910. none among

  911. all the

  912. earth,

  913. all the

  914. nations of

  915. earth,

  916. that is

  917. exempt from

  918. this duty

  919. to worship

  920. God,

  921. not one.

  922. Even more

  923. immediately,

  924. verse 4

  925. is echoing

  926. Revelation 14,

  927. 7,

  928. which we saw

  929. last week,

  930. which said,

  931. Fear God

  932. and give him

  933. glory because

  934. the hour of

  935. his judgment

  936. has come.

  937. At that point

  938. it was a

  939. command,

  940. fear God

  941. and give

  942. him glory

  943. because of

  944. his judgment.

  945. But now

  946. it's a rhetorical

  947. question.

  948. Who will

  949. not fear

  950. the Lord

  951. and glorify

  952. your name?

  953. The assumed

  954. answer is

  955. no one.

  956. There is

  957. not one

  958. soul in

  959. the universe

  960. who will

  961. not fear

  962. the Lord

  963. and glorify

  964. his name

  965. when his

  966. final judgments

  967. are revealed.

  968. As I

  969. mentioned

  970. last week,

  971. there are

  972. only two

  973. types of

  974. people in

  975. the world.

  976. Those who

  977. now voluntarily

  978. repent their

  979. sins and

  980. worship God

  981. or those who

  982. will later

  983. in the future

  984. involuntarily

  985. worship God.

  986. One way

  987. or the

  988. other,

  989. God will

  990. get the

  991. worship that

  992. is due

  993. to him.

  994. But if

  995. you wait

  996. until that

  997. final judgment,

  998. you will

  999. not escape

  1000. his judgment.

  1001. The rest

  1002. of verse 4

  1003. gives us

  1004. three reasons

  1005. why all

  1006. will fear

  1007. God and

  1008. glorify his

  1009. name.

  1010. It says,

  1011. one,

  1012. for you

  1013. are holy.

  1014. Then two,

  1015. for all

  1016. nations will

  1017. come and

  1018. worship you.

  1019. So ESV

  1020. omits the

  1021. word for,

  1022. but it's

  1023. there in

  1024. the original

  1025. Greek.

  1026. And then

  1027. finally,

  1028. third,

  1029. for your

  1030. righteous

  1031. acts have

  1032. been revealed.

  1033. The first

  1034. reason is

  1035. for you

  1036. are holy.

  1037. A more

  1038. literal

  1039. translation

  1040. would be

  1041. for alone

  1042. holy.

  1043. God is

  1044. alone holy.

  1045. He is

  1046. unique and

  1047. unparalleled in

  1048. his holiness.

  1049. He alone

  1050. is holy.

  1051. Therefore,

  1052. all will fear

  1053. him and glorify

  1054. his name.

  1055. The most

  1056. basic meaning

  1057. of holiness

  1058. is consecration.

  1059. I know we

  1060. often typically

  1061. think of holiness

  1062. as the opposite

  1063. of wickedness,

  1064. which is true

  1065. by implication,

  1066. but the

  1067. Bible usually

  1068. contrasts what

  1069. is holy

  1070. from what

  1071. is common.

  1072. For example,

  1073. it says in

  1074. Leviticus 10.10,

  1075. you are to

  1076. distinguish between

  1077. the holy and

  1078. the common,

  1079. and between

  1080. the unclean

  1081. and the clean.

  1082. So to be

  1083. holy is to

  1084. be uncommon,

  1085. to be specially

  1086. set apart.

  1087. So the

  1088. holiness of

  1089. God then

  1090. conveys how

  1091. God is

  1092. unlike us,

  1093. how he

  1094. is set apart

  1095. from us,

  1096. that he

  1097. is the

  1098. incomparable

  1099. one,

  1100. that he

  1101. is the

  1102. peerless

  1103. one,

  1104. that he

  1105. is the

  1106. matchless

  1107. one,

  1108. that he

  1109. is the

  1110. unrivaled

  1111. one.

  1112. He

  1113. alone is

  1114. holy.

  1115. And God

  1116. is not

  1117. merely

  1118. holy.

  1119. We saw

  1120. in Revelation

  1121. 4.8 that

  1122. he is

  1123. thrice

  1124. holy.

  1125. Holy,

  1126. holy,

  1127. holy.

  1128. He is

  1129. utterly

  1130. perfect in

  1131. his

  1132. holiness.

  1133. Numbers 23,

  1134. 19 contrasts

  1135. man and

  1136. God.

  1137. God is not

  1138. man that he

  1139. should lie,

  1140. or son of

  1141. man that he

  1142. should change

  1143. his mind.

  1144. Has he

  1145. said and

  1146. will he not

  1147. do it?

  1148. Or has he

  1149. spoken and

  1150. will he not

  1151. fulfill it?

  1152. Humans are

  1153. fickle.

  1154. They lie,

  1155. they change

  1156. their mind,

  1157. and they break

  1158. their promises.

  1159. They

  1160. need on

  1161. their

  1162. word.

  1163. But God

  1164. never

  1165. lies.

  1166. God never

  1167. changes his

  1168. mind.

  1169. God always

  1170. fulfills his

  1171. promises.

  1172. God is

  1173. alone holy

  1174. for that

  1175. reason.

  1176. In the

  1177. world of

  1178. men,

  1179. there are

  1180. wrongful

  1181. convictions

  1182. and unduly

  1183. harsh

  1184. sentences.

  1185. In the

  1186. world of

  1187. men,

  1188. there are

  1189. wrongful

  1190. acquittals

  1191. and unduly

  1192. lenient

  1193. sentences.

  1194. because men

  1195. are fickle.

  1196. Because men

  1197. can be

  1198. bribed and

  1199. corrupted.

  1200. Because men

  1201. can be

  1202. biased and

  1203. prejudiced.

  1204. But God

  1205. cannot be

  1206. bribed.

  1207. And God's

  1208. justice cannot

  1209. be perverted.

  1210. And no

  1211. evidence can

  1212. ever be

  1213. hidden from

  1214. the all-seeing

  1215. eyes of God.

  1216. And for that

  1217. reason, on that

  1218. final judgment

  1219. day, all

  1220. wrongs will

  1221. be righted,

  1222. and all

  1223. those who

  1224. escape justice

  1225. in this world

  1226. of men will

  1227. be punished

  1228. by God.

  1229. That's a

  1230. comforting

  1231. Bible.

  1232. Also, all

  1233. will fear

  1234. God and

  1235. glorify His

  1236. name, for

  1237. all nations

  1238. will come

  1239. and worship

  1240. you.

  1241. This is an

  1242. allusion to

  1243. Psalm 86,

  1244. 9-10 that

  1245. we read in

  1246. our cult

  1247. worship this

  1248. morning.

  1249. All the

  1250. inhabitants of

  1251. earth who

  1252. had worshipped

  1253. the dragon

  1254. and worshipped

  1255. the beast,

  1256. thinking that

  1257. they are

  1258. all-powerful,

  1259. thinking that

  1260. they will

  1261. rule forever,

  1262. all those

  1263. who bowed

  1264. to economic

  1265. pressure and

  1266. religious

  1267. persecution of

  1268. the beast,

  1269. all those who

  1270. took on the

  1271. image of the

  1272. beast and

  1273. the number

  1274. of His

  1275. name,

  1276. will be

  1277. dismayed when

  1278. they see all

  1279. nations come

  1280. and worship

  1281. God and

  1282. His Lamb.

  1283. And when

  1284. they behold

  1285. that mighty

  1286. throne,

  1287. worshipping

  1288. God,

  1289. they will be

  1290. forced to

  1291. bow their

  1292. knees and

  1293. confess that

  1294. Jesus Christ

  1295. is Lord to

  1296. the glory of

  1297. God the

  1298. Father.

  1299. Even those

  1300. who stubbornly

  1301. defied God

  1302. in this

  1303. life and

  1304. all those

  1305. unbelievers

  1306. who,

  1307. as Revelation

  1308. 16,

  1309. 9 said,

  1310. did not

  1311. repent and

  1312. give God

  1313. glory,

  1314. they will

  1315. come and

  1316. worship God

  1317. on that

  1318. day.

  1319. The third

  1320. reason why

  1321. all people

  1322. will fear

  1323. God and

  1324. glorify His

  1325. name is

  1326. given at

  1327. the end

  1328. of verse

  1329. 4.

  1330. For your

  1331. righteous

  1332. acts have

  1333. been

  1334. revealed.

  1335. Consistent

  1336. with the

  1337. theme of

  1338. this chapter,

  1339. I think

  1340. this is

  1341. also

  1342. referring

  1343. to

  1344. righteous

  1345. acts

  1346. that have

  1347. just been

  1348. revealed,

  1349. righteous

  1350. acts of

  1351. God's

  1352. judgment.

  1353. God

  1354. deserves

  1355. praise for

  1356. pouring out

  1357. His

  1358. righteous

  1359. wrath on

  1360. the wicked.

  1361. Do you

  1362. praise God

  1363. for His

  1364. wrath and

  1365. His

  1366. justice?

  1367. I still

  1368. remember

  1369. 2016,

  1370. some of

  1371. you guys

  1372. probably

  1373. remember

  1374. this in

  1375. the news,

  1376. when a

  1377. Stanford

  1378. University

  1379. student was

  1380. sentenced to

  1381. six months

  1382. in jail,

  1383. not six

  1384. years,

  1385. six months

  1386. for sexually

  1387. assaulting an

  1388. unconscious

  1389. woman on

  1390. campus.

  1391. When the

  1392. word got

  1393. out that

  1394. that was

  1395. his sentence,

  1396. there was

  1397. widespread

  1398. public

  1399. fury at

  1400. the unduly

  1401. lenient

  1402. sentence.

  1403. And soon

  1404. thereafter,

  1405. a Stanford

  1406. law professor

  1407. launched a

  1408. campaign to

  1409. remove the

  1410. judge who

  1411. gave that

  1412. sentence.

  1413. It was the

  1414. first attempt

  1415. to recall a

  1416. trial judge

  1417. anywhere in

  1418. the country

  1419. since 1982.

  1420. And no

  1421. California

  1422. judge had

  1423. ever been

  1424. recalled since

  1425. 1932.

  1426. But this

  1427. judge was

  1428. recalled.

  1429. Whenever we

  1430. see this

  1431. scared of

  1432. justice,

  1433. we long

  1434. for true

  1435. justice.

  1436. It's not a

  1437. good thing

  1438. when justice

  1439. is not

  1440. served.

  1441. God's

  1442. righteous

  1443. acts are

  1444. finally

  1445. revealed,

  1446. when he

  1447. finally

  1448. judges the

  1449. wicked of

  1450. the earth,

  1451. all will

  1452. fear him

  1453. and glorify

  1454. his name.

  1455. After the

  1456. song of the

  1457. lamb,

  1458. John's vision

  1459. shifts in

  1460. verse 5 and

  1461. he sees the

  1462. sanctuary of

  1463. the tent of

  1464. witness that

  1465. heaven was

  1466. opened.

  1467. This is yet

  1468. another allusion

  1469. to Exodus,

  1470. the tent of

  1471. witness,

  1472. or the

  1473. tent of

  1474. the

  1475. testimony,

  1476. as it is

  1477. often called

  1478. in the Old

  1479. Testament,

  1480. is another

  1481. name for

  1482. the

  1483. tabernacle

  1484. that Moses

  1485. and the

  1486. Israelites

  1487. built in

  1488. the wilderness

  1489. to be the

  1490. dwelling place

  1491. of God.

  1492. This

  1493. tent of

  1494. witness in

  1495. heaven is

  1496. the heavenly

  1497. equivalent of

  1498. the earthly

  1499. tabernacle that

  1500. was with

  1501. God's people

  1502. on that

  1503. Exodus

  1504. journey.

  1505. The

  1506. tabernacle is

  1507. called the

  1508. tent of

  1509. witness or

  1510. the tent of

  1511. testimony because

  1512. according to

  1513. Exodus 25-21,

  1514. the tablets of

  1515. the testimony,

  1516. the tablets of

  1517. stone upon

  1518. which the

  1519. ten commandments

  1520. were inscribed

  1521. by the very

  1522. finger of

  1523. God,

  1524. the tablets of

  1525. the testimony

  1526. were in the

  1527. ark and stored

  1528. inside the

  1529. tabernacle and

  1530. that's why the

  1531. tabernacle is

  1532. called the

  1533. tabernacle of

  1534. testimony or

  1535. the tent of

  1536. witness.

  1537. It served to

  1538. be as a

  1539. witness between

  1540. God and his

  1541. people that

  1542. they had pledged

  1543. to live in

  1544. light of God's

  1545. will and to

  1546. obey his

  1547. commands.

  1548. Remember how

  1549. Revelation 12-17

  1550. described God's

  1551. faithful people.

  1552. They are those

  1553. who keep the

  1554. commandments of

  1555. God and hold

  1556. to the testimony

  1557. of Jesus.

  1558. So it's fitting

  1559. then that here in

  1560. verse 6, the

  1561. seven plagues

  1562. come out of the

  1563. sanctuary, out of

  1564. this tent of

  1565. witness against

  1566. people of the

  1567. world who have

  1568. not kept the

  1569. commandments of

  1570. God and who

  1571. have not held

  1572. on to the

  1573. testimony of

  1574. Jesus.

  1575. The tent of

  1576. witness is now

  1577. bearing witness

  1578. against, testify

  1579. against the

  1580. people of the

  1581. world who have

  1582. refused to

  1583. repent of

  1584. their sins.

  1585. In verse 7,

  1586. these seven

  1587. plagues are

  1588. identified explicitly

  1589. with the seven

  1590. golden bowls full

  1591. of the wrath of

  1592. God.

  1593. This is

  1594. significant because

  1595. we have seen

  1596. golden bowls before

  1597. in the book of

  1598. Revelation.

  1599. In Revelation 5-8,

  1600. the 24 elders

  1601. before the

  1602. throne of God

  1603. were holding

  1604. golden bowls full

  1605. of incense,

  1606. which are the

  1607. prayers of the

  1608. saints.

  1609. Incense symbolically

  1610. represents the

  1611. prayers of the

  1612. saints in

  1613. Revelation.

  1614. And those

  1615. prayers of the

  1616. saints, that

  1617. incense is what

  1618. we saw in

  1619. Revelation 6-10

  1620. when the saints

  1621. were crying out,

  1622. O sovereign

  1623. Lord, holy and

  1624. true, how long

  1625. before you will

  1626. judge and avenge

  1627. our blood on

  1628. those who dwell

  1629. on the earth?

  1630. In Revelation 8,

  1631. 3-5, we saw

  1632. how God finally

  1633. answers the

  1634. saints' plea for

  1635. vindication and

  1636. vengeance in the

  1637. seventh seal

  1638. judgment when the

  1639. golden censer or

  1640. the bowl that

  1641. contained the

  1642. incense is then

  1643. taken to take

  1644. the fire, the

  1645. coals from the

  1646. fire to throw

  1647. upon the earth

  1648. in judgment

  1649. against the

  1650. earth's woes

  1651. or in rebellion

  1652. against God.

  1653. To all the

  1654. saints who are

  1655. weary from

  1656. being harassed by

  1657. the red dragon

  1658. and the beast,

  1659. to all the

  1660. saints who are

  1661. weary and

  1662. battle-hearted

  1663. because of the

  1664. deceptions and

  1665. the accusations

  1666. of the dragon,

  1667. this is your

  1668. sweet belief.

  1669. This is your

  1670. vindication.

  1671. This is the

  1672. answer to your

  1673. cry for help.

  1674. Seven golden

  1675. bowls, the

  1676. answer to the

  1677. prayers of the

  1678. saints, not

  1679. full of the

  1680. wrath of God.

  1681. And again, I

  1682. mentioned last

  1683. week that the

  1684. cup or the

  1685. bowl of God's

  1686. wrath is an

  1687. Old Testament

  1688. reference.

  1689. Isaiah 51, 17,

  1690. 51, 17 speaks of

  1691. the cup of God's

  1692. wrath, the

  1693. bowl, the

  1694. cup of

  1695. staggering.

  1696. 51, 22,

  1697. Isaiah says,

  1698. the cup of

  1699. staggering, the

  1700. bowl of God's

  1701. wrath.

  1702. And unrepentant

  1703. sinners will be

  1704. forced to

  1705. down this

  1706. terrible,

  1707. undiluted

  1708. liquor of

  1709. God's wrath

  1710. to the

  1711. dregs.

  1712. The fierce,

  1713. wrathful presence

  1714. of God can be

  1715. seen in verse

  1716. 8.

  1717. Just as the

  1718. cloud, or

  1719. alternatively

  1720. smoke, covered

  1721. the tent of

  1722. meeting in

  1723. Exodus 40,

  1724. 34, 35,

  1725. after completion

  1726. of the

  1727. tabernacle,

  1728. it said that

  1729. the glory of

  1730. the Lord

  1731. filled the

  1732. tabernacle and

  1733. Moses was not

  1734. able to enter

  1735. the tent of

  1736. meeting because

  1737. the clouds

  1738. settled on

  1739. it, and

  1740. the glory of

  1741. the Lord

  1742. filled the

  1743. tabernacle.

  1744. That same

  1745. event happens

  1746. here in

  1747. verse 8,

  1748. in greater

  1749. fullness.

  1750. The sanctuary

  1751. was filled with

  1752. smoke from the

  1753. glory of God

  1754. and from his

  1755. power, and no

  1756. one could enter

  1757. the sanctuary

  1758. until the seven

  1759. plagues of the

  1760. seven angels

  1761. were finished.

  1762. The wrath of

  1763. God is the

  1764. unquenchable flame

  1765. of the glory of

  1766. God towards

  1767. sinners.

  1768. sinners, and

  1769. when the

  1770. consuming fire

  1771. is burning in

  1772. his righteous

  1773. anger, not

  1774. even the

  1775. heavenly beings,

  1776. they are

  1777. of course.

  1778. No one can

  1779. enter until the

  1780. wrath of God

  1781. is finished.

  1782. I want to

  1783. appeal to those

  1784. of you and

  1785. friends here who

  1786. are not yet

  1787. Christians, who

  1788. have not put

  1789. their faith in

  1790. Jesus.

  1791. This is

  1792. something we

  1793. should truly

  1794. fear.

  1795. More than an

  1796. AI apocalypse,

  1797. more than a

  1798. nuclear holocaust.

  1799. What we

  1800. should truly

  1801. fear is the

  1802. wrath of God,

  1803. not the wrath of

  1804. man or the

  1805. wrath of the

  1806. nations.

  1807. Do not fear

  1808. those who kill

  1809. the body but

  1810. cannot kill

  1811. the soul, but

  1812. fear him who

  1813. can destroy both

  1814. soul and

  1815. body in hell.

  1816. But, having

  1817. we all sinned,

  1818. having we all

  1819. fallen short of

  1820. the glory of

  1821. God?

  1822. Isn't that what

  1823. the Bible teaches?

  1824. And the

  1825. righteous wrath

  1826. of God will

  1827. not stop

  1828. unfinished.

  1829. It will not

  1830. let up until

  1831. it is finished,

  1832. he says, until

  1833. justice has been

  1834. served.

  1835. He says in

  1836. verse 1 that

  1837. with the seven

  1838. plagues the wrath

  1839. of God is

  1840. finished.

  1841. He says in

  1842. verse 8, no

  1843. one can enter the

  1844. sanctuary until

  1845. the seven plagues

  1846. of the seven

  1847. angels were

  1848. finished.

  1849. but those

  1850. who face that

  1851. judgment do

  1852. not escape.

  1853. They are

  1854. consumed forever.

  1855. So how can we

  1856. escape that final

  1857. judgment of God?

  1858. There's only one

1859. way for us to be

  1860. saved.

  1861. In John chapter

    John 19 chapter mention

  1862. 19, Jesus the

1863. Son of God as he

  1864. is dying on the

  1865. cross for our

  1866. sins, bearing the

  1867. penalty for our

  1868. sins.

  1869. absorbing in our

  1870. place the wrath

  1871. of God, satisfying

  1872. the wrath of God

  1873. to our sinners.

  1874. On that cross,

  1875. Jesus says as his

  1876. breath is expiring,

  1877. it is finished.

  1878. Because there on

  1879. that cross, Jesus

  1880. himself drank down

  1881. to the dregs that

  1882. bowl of wrath that

  1883. was reserved for

  1884. us.

  1885. That's the only

  1886. way for us to

  1887. be saved.

  1888. There is a

  1889. bowl.

  1890. Somebody must

  1891. drink it.

  1892. If you don't

  1893. accept Jesus'

  1894. sacrifice on your

  1895. behalf, drinking

  1896. that for you,

  1897. you'll be the one

  1898. drinking it in

  1899. the end.

  1900. And Jesus had

  1901. to die because

  1902. that was the

  1903. only way to

  1904. satisfy the

  1905. wrath of God.

  1906. The fact that

  1907. God was

  1908. forbearing towards

  1909. sinners throughout

  1910. the ages, that he

  1911. didn't punish

  1912. sinners right then

  1913. and there with

  1914. his fire of

  1915. judgment, that we

  1916. are still alive

  1917. right now instead

  1918. of being consumed

  1919. by the wrath and

  1920. the judgment of

  1921. God, that brings

  1922. into question

  1923. the justice of

  1924. God.

  1925. It impugns the

  1926. character of

  1927. God.

  1928. God, are you

  1929. always really

  1930. true and just?

  1931. If so, what's

  1932. going on in this

  1933. world?

  1934. What's with all

  1935. this sin?

  1936. What's with all

  1937. this wickedness?

  1938. What's with all

  1939. this evil outside

  1940. and within my

  1941. own heart?

  1942. How can you

  1943. be just and

  1944. tolerate this

  1945. sin?

  1946. the cross had

  1947. to happen.

  1948. Jesus had to

  1949. die.

  1950. He had to

  1951. satisfy the

  1952. wrath of God

  1953. in order to

  1954. vindicate God's

  1955. character, that

  1956. his ways truly

  1957. are true and

  1958. just, that he

  1959. is the just

  1960. judge worthy of

  1961. our worship.

  1962. So please, don't

  1963. wait until the

  1964. end of the age

  1965. when the sudden

  1966. plates are

  1967. finished.

  1968. you can't

  1969. today hear Jesus

  1970. proclaim over

  1971. your sins, no

  1972. matter what you

  1973. have done, no

  1974. matter where you

  1975. have been, you

  1976. can hear Jesus

  1977. say, oh, you,

  1978. it is

  1979. finished.

  1980. Let's pray.

  1981. Father, we

  1982. praise you, your

  1983. son Jesus

  1984. Christ.

  1985. We praise you

  1986. that we do

  1987. not have to

  1988. bear the penalty

  1989. for our sins

  1990. or sins.

  1991. We cannot

  1992. imagine bearing

  1993. bearing your

  1994. wrath, Father,

  1995. your discipline,

  1996. the front

  1997. and count

  1998. of your

  1999. judgment.

  2000. Thank you

  2001. for sending

  2002. your son

  2003. Jesus out

  2004. of your

  2005. love for

  2006. us so

  2007. that your

  2008. wrath might

  2009. be satisfied.

  2010. Help us

  2011. to see

  2012. the gravity

  2013. of our

  2014. sin

  2015. the fury

  2016. of your

  2017. wrath

  2018. so that

  2019. we might

  2020. appreciate

  2021. even more

  2022. the mercy

  2023. we have

  2024. received

  2025. at the

  2026. cross of

  2027. Jesus Christ.

  2028. In Jesus'

  2029. name we

  2030. pray.

  2031. Amen.
