  1. Good morning, everyone. It's great to worship with you. If you don't know me, my name is Sean.

  2. I'm one of the pastors of Trinity Cambridge Church, and it is my joy and privilege to preach God's

  3. Word to you this morning. If you have your Bibles, please open it to Revelation. It's the last book

  4. in the Bible. If you don't have a Bible, please raise your hand. We'd love to give you a copy

  5. that you can have and use while you're here and take home with you. Revelation chapter 17.

    Revelation 17 chapter mention

  6. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word. Father, we humble ourselves again

  7. and incline our ears and our hearts to you so that you might address us, speak to us from your Word,

  8. so that our perspectives that are so pervasively and thoroughly enculturated in this

  9. sinful world might be renewed and transformed and aligned with your purposes and priorities.

  10. So to that end, God, minister to us by the power of your Holy Spirit in the reading and preaching

  11. of your Word for the glory of your name and fill your people this morning with the hope of the gospel.

  12. in Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  13. If you are able, please stand and join me as I read Revelation 17.

  14. Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bulls came and said to me,

  15. Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters,

  16. with whom the kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality,

  17. and with the wine of whose sexual immorality the dwellers on earth have become drunk.

  18. And he carried me away in the spirit into a wilderness,

  19. and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was full of blasphemous names,

  20. and it had seven heads and ten horns.

  21. The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet and adorned with gold and jewels and pearls,

  22. holding in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her sexual immorality.

  23. And on her forehead was written a name of mystery,

  24. Babylon the Great, mother of prostitutes and of earth's abominations.

  25. And I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints, the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.

  26. When I saw her, I marveled greatly.

  27. But the angel said to me, Why do you marvel?

  28. I will tell you the mystery of the woman and of the beast with seven heads and ten horns that carries her.

  29. The beast that you saw was and is not and is about to rise from the bottomless pit and go to destruction.

  30. And the dwellers on earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world

  31. will marvel to see the beast because it was and is not and is to come.

  32. This calls for a mind with wisdom.

  33. The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman is seated.

  34. They are also seven kings, five of whom have fallen.

  35. One is, the other has not yet come.

  36. It is an eighth, but it belongs to the seven and it goes to destruction.

  37. And the ten horns that you saw are ten kings who have not yet received royal power,

  38. but they are to receive authority as kings for one hour together with the beast.

  39. These are of one mind and they hand over their power and authority to the beast.

  40. They will make war on the lamb and the lamb will conquer them.

  41. For he is Lord of lords and king of kings.

  42. And those with him are called and chosen and faithful.

  43. And the angel said to me,

  44. the waters that you saw where the prostitute is seated are peoples and multitudes and nations and languages.

  45. And the ten horns that you saw, they and the beast will hate the prostitute.

  46. They will make her desolate and naked and devour her flesh and burn her up with fire.

  47. For God has put it into their hearts to carry out his purpose by being of one mind

  48. and handing over their royal power to the beast until the words of God are fulfilled.

  49. And the woman that you saw is the great city that has dominion over the kings of the earth.

  50. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  51. You may be seated.

  52. I came across a fascinating list that WalletHub, a finance company, put together entitled

  53. The Most Sinful Cities in America.

  54. It ranked 182 major cities in the U.S. based on how sinful it is according to their estimation.

  55. And they used 37 different metrics with corresponding weights to determine how sinful the city is

  56. across seven different categories of sin, broad categories of sin.

  57. So the first category was anger and hatred.

  58. So they used rates of violent crimes and assaults to assess the city's level of sinfulness in that category,

  59. among other metrics.

  60. Secondly, the rate of fraud and theft was used to assess its level of jealousy.

  61. The instances of driving under the influence and drug use was used to assess its excesses.

  62. The number of casinos per capita and to assess its greed.

  63. And the number of adult entertainment establishments per capita and Google search interest index for porn to assess its lust.

  64. And then the number of tanning salons per capita and Google search interest index for plastic surgeries to assess its vanity.

  65. And the average time spent watching TV, among other factors, to assess its laziness.

  66. And this is no definitive list.

  67. It's not the Bible, obviously.

  68. But still fascinating.

  69. And unsurprisingly, at the top of the list is, you might guess, Las Vegas, which has been nicknamed Sin City since the early 1900s.

  70. Houston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Atlanta round out the top five.

  71. Boston is ranked 95th.

  72. But we break the top 50 in the greed category, which is not surprising.

  73. A city is where there's a high density of people.

  74. And for that reason, there is a concentration and synergy of human creativity and wealth and intellect.

  75. However, that also means that there is, in cities, a concentration of human sin and pride.

  76. And that's also one of the reasons why we are here as a church in the city.

  77. Because those who are well have no need of a physician.

  78. But those who are sick.

  79. And Jesus came not to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.

  80. Ever since the tower and the city of Babel in the land of Shinar in Genesis 11,

  81. when people said to themselves,

  82. Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens.

  83. And let us make a name for ourselves.

  84. It was the first city.

  85. Cities have since then been a monument to human hubris.

  86. Don't people move into cities nowadays for the exact same reason?

  87. Let us make a name for ourselves.

  88. Let us build a city to reach to the top of the heavens.

  89. Living life apart from God.

  90. Living life without reference to God.

  91. That, at its heart, is what sin is all about.

  92. Seeking to make a name for ourselves rather than praising the name of God.

  93. And wanting to reach the heavens so that we can, in a sense, be gods ourselves.

  94. That sinful human hubris is succinctly captured in the final stanza of William Ernest Henley's defiant poem, Invictus.

  95. Which goes like this.

  96. It matters not how straight the gate, how charged with punishments the scroll.

  97. I am the master of my fate.

  98. I am the captain of my soul.

  99. He's making two biblical allusions here that you may be catching on to already.

  100. The straight gate, S-T-R-A-I-T.

  101. He's referring to the narrow gate that Jesus speaks of when he commends us in Matthew 7, 13.

  102. Enter by the narrow gate, or the straight gate.

  103. For the gate is wide, and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.

  104. For the gate is narrow, and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

  105. That's the first illusion.

  106. The second one, when he talks about the scroll that is charged with punishments,

  107. he's speaking of the scroll with the judgment seals in Revelation 5.

  108. So then the poet is saying here,

  109. I don't care how narrow the gate is, or how hard it is to get to heaven.

  110. I don't care what kind of standards of obedience I have to, I'm required to follow.

  111. I don't care what kind of fearful punishments await me in the scroll of God's judgments.

  112. I'm going to do what I want to do, and I'm going to go where I want to, where I please to go,

  113. because I am the master of my fate.

  114. I am the captain of my soul.

  115. It's such a bare-faced declaration of human rebellion that it's shocking,

  116. but that's what's at the heart of sin, and that's what the heart of the city of man.

  117. From the ancient city of Babel to Babylon,

  118. from the ancient city of Rome to modern-day metropolises,

  119. cities have been incubators and stewards of human culture,

  120. the good, the bad, and the ugly.

  121. And therefore, cities have been a monument to human hubris.

  122. This is what Babylon, the great prostitute, represents,

  123. the center of the sinful world's cultural and economic power.

  124. Revelation portrays three main enemies of God's people

  125. as the beast, the false prophet, and the great prostitute,

  126. and they're all under the authority of Satan, the ancient dragon.

  127. And they use different tools to attack and oppress God's people.

  128. The beast's primary tool of offense against the people of God is persecution.

  129. Oppressing the people of God.

  130. And the false prophet, the second beast's main tool, the primary tool,

  131. is deception.

  132. False religion.

  133. He gets people to worship the beast.

  134. But the third, the great prostitute,

  135. her primary tool is perhaps the most insidious and subtle of all.

  136. That's seduction.

  137. Revelation 17 to 18 both deal with the fall of Babylon, the great prostitute.

  138. And the main point of chapter 17 is that as the bride of the lamb,

  139. we must resist the seductive power of the prostitute and the beast.

  140. First exhortation, verses 1 to 8, is do not marvel at their debauchery and dominion.

  141. And the second exhortation, verses 9 to 18, is keep in mind their destruction and desolation.

  142. And the third and final exhortation in verse 14, is be faithful to the lamb who chose you.

  143. In order to resist the seductive power of the prostitute,

  144. we must take care not to marvel at her debauchery and dominion in this world.

  145. An angel invites John to come and see the judgment of the great prostitute

  146. who is seated on many waters, in verses 1 and 2,

  147. with whom the kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality,

  148. and with the wine of whose sexual immorality the dwellers on earth have become drunk.

  149. We are told in verse 5 that the name of this great prostitute is Babylon the Great,

  150. mother of prostitutes and earth's abominations.

  151. And so the downfall of Babylon was already proclaimed early in chapter 14,

  152. and the seventh bull that Charlie preached on last week from chapter 16

  153. also talked about the fall of Babylon.

  154. And in chapter 17 to 18, we see in great detail how it actually happens.

  155. She is called Babylon the Great, and the great prostitute,

  156. much like the great red dragon that she serves from chapter 12,

  157. to indicate the enormous scale and power and influence that she wields.

  158. Verse 18 calls her the great city that has dominion over the kings of the earth.

  159. Ancient Babylon was the biggest city in the world in its heyday,

  160. and because the Babylonian empire sacked Jerusalem

  161. and carried Judah into captivity and exile,

  162. and because King Nebuchadnezzar tried to assimilate the Jews,

  163. their culture and their religion into Babylonian culture and religion,

  164. and lead them to apostasy,

  165. the name Babylon became synonymous in biblical literature

  166. with worldly powers and influences that persecute God's people

  167. and seduce them into compromise.

  168. That's what Babylon represents.

  169. In the first century AD, when Revelation was written,

  170. the main Babylon would have been Rome,

  171. because in the same way that Babylonian empire destroyed Jerusalem

  172. and its temple in 586 BC,

  173. so the Roman empire destroyed Jerusalem and its temple in 70 AD.

  174. Later in verse 9, we're told that the seven heads of the beast

  175. are seven mountains on which the woman is seated.

  176. Rome was popularly called a city on seven hills,

  177. city of seven hills.

  178. In the ancient world, you can see actually a coin

  179. that was produced in 71 AD under Emperor Vespasian's reign,

  180. which depicts on the left,

  181. I think I have a picture of this to show, Gary.

  182. It shows the picture of goddess Roma,

  183. who is a personification of the city of Rome,

  184. and she is sitting on seven mountains or seven hills.

  185. And to the right of her, you see the water, the river Tiber.

  186. And Babylon, the great prostitute,

  187. cannot be understood, however, as only referring to Rome.

  188. Even though it does refer to Rome,

  189. it's not referring only to Rome.

  190. And John makes that clear here in Revelation 17 to 18,

  191. because Rome already fell.

  192. It was already sacked many hundreds of years ago.

  193. But this Babylon will finally fall only at the end of the age.

  194. So she is called Babylon here, not Rome,

  195. because Babylon is the type and the pattern

  196. that represents all cities that are at the center

  197. of the sinful world's cultural influence and economic power.

  198. So what modern sociologists call today global cities,

  199. or world cities, or alpha cities,

  200. I didn't even know these terms existed until this week,

  201. such as New York and London,

  202. which function as hubs of the global economy

  203. and international politics,

  204. as well as cultural centers featuring world-renowned theater,

  205. museums, and landmarks,

  206. can also be appropriately called Babylon.

  207. Verse 1 says that this great prostitute

  208. is seated on many waters.

  209. This is an expression that is taken from Jeremiah 51.13,

  210. which prophesies of the fall of Babylon,

  211. who dwells by many waters, rich in treasures.

  212. The idea of dwelling by many waters

  213. is connected to the fact that she is rich in treasures

  214. because of the bodies of water that enrich the cities

  215. by making them centers of trade and commerce.

  216. Ancient Babylon was famously built upon

  217. the Tigris and Euphrates rivers,

  218. the rivers,

  219. thrived as the economic center of the ancient world.

  220. That's why that whole geographic region

  221. is called Mesopotamia,

  222. which means between two rivers,

  223. between the rivers.

  224. Similarly, ancient Rome,

  225. seated on the Tiber River,

  226. and by the Tyrrhenian Sea,

  227. was the commercial center of the world.

  228. An angel later explains in verse 15,

  229. the waters that you saw

  230. where the prostitute is seated

  231. are peoples and multitudes

  232. and nations and languages.

  233. Both Babylon and Rome

  234. teamed with multitudes

  235. and nations and peoples

  236. from all cultures

  237. going in and out of them all the time.

  238. And this is an apt picture

  239. of the great prostitute

  240. seated on many waters

  241. and her whoredom,

  242. her sexual immorality.

  243. Proverbs 5, 15, 16

  244. counsels young men

  245. to flee from the adulteress

  246. and to be faithful to his wife

  247. with these words.

  248. Drink water from your own cistern,

  249. flowing water from your own well.

  250. Should your springs be scattered abroad,

  251. streams of water in the streets,

  252. let them be for yourself alone

  253. and not for strangers with you.

  254. But Babylon and Rome

  255. and all major metropolitan centers

  256. of cultural and economic power,

  257. they drink,

  258. not from one source of water,

  259. but from many waters.

  260. And they share their streams of water

  261. with strangers,

  262. scattering their springs abroad.

  263. So verse 2 says,

  264. with her,

  265. the kings of the earth

  266. have committed sexual immorality

  267. and with the wine

  268. of her sexual immorality,

  269. the dwellers on earth

  270. have become drunk.

  271. And if you've been with us

  272. through our series

  273. in the book of Revelation,

  274. you know that the phrase

  275. dwellers on earth

  276. is John's characteristic way

  277. of referring to

  278. the unrepentant,

  279. people who in this world,

  280. unbelievers,

  281. who are unrepentant of their sins

  282. and continue to rebel against God.

  283. And these people are drunk

  284. on the wine of Babylon's

  285. sexual immorality,

  286. which we find out in verse 6

  287. is the blood of the saints,

  288. the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.

  289. Babylon's prosperity

  290. and intoxication

  291. come at the expense

  292. of the lifeblood

  293. of the people of God

  294. because her cultural

  295. and economic prowess

  296. lead to the oppression

  297. and marginalization

  298. of God's people

  299. who do not participate

  300. in their idolatrous agenda.

  301. And this prostitute

  302. is fertile.

  303. Verse 5 says

  304. that she is a mother

  305. of prostitutes

  306. and of earth's abominations.

  307. She produces offspring

  308. that are also prostitutes

  309. and our abominations

  310. fill the earth

  311. with even more abominations.

  312. And this is figurative language

  313. because obviously people

  314. don't commit sexual immorality

  315. with cities.

  316. They do so all the time

  317. in cities,

  318. but they don't do it

  319. with cities.

  320. So this is a metaphor

  321. for partaking in

  322. and coming under

  323. the influence

  324. of Babylon's worldliness

  325. and sinful idolatry.

  326. Because sexual immorality

  327. is such a shocking

  328. betrayal of true love

  329. within marriage,

  330. the Bible often uses it

  331. as a metaphor

  332. for spiritual idolatry.

  333. In what ways

  334. have the self-sufficient arrogance,

  335. the self-absorbed vanity,

  336. the liberal sensuality,

  337. and the boundless greed

  338. and ambition

  339. of the city of man

  340. rubbed off on you?

  341. Maybe you're not committing

  342. blatant adultery

  343. and spiritual idolatry

  344. against God.

  345. But imagine a married woman

  346. who is infatuated

  347. with a man

  348. who is not her husband.

  349. She hasn't had sex with him,

  350. but they're in each other's DMs

  351. sending flirty texts

  352. and emojis.

  353. She fantasizes about him

  354. and her mind and heart

  355. are more occupied with him

  356. than with her own husband.

  357. When she is talking to him

  358. in person,

  359. she gets,

  360. her eyes get all,

  361. you know,

  362. oogly-googly

  363. and she giggles

  364. in a way that she never does

  365. when she's with her husband.

  366. Yes, she hasn't slept with him,

  367. at least not yet,

  368. but would you call that faithful?

  369. Faithful?

  370. Even if there isn't

  371. physical adultery,

  372. there is certainly

  373. emotional adultery,

  374. adultery of the heart.

  375. And in what ways

  376. are we trying to do

  377. exactly that with Babylon,

  378. the city of man?

  379. Babylon exerts

  380. its sinful influence

  381. upon people of God

  382. even today.

  383. Are you consumed with zeal

  384. for the glory of God?

  385. Or are you consumed

  386. with lust

  387. for the glory of man?

  388. Do you live

  389. with an eternal,

  390. heavenly perspective?

  391. Or do you live

  392. with a temporal,

  393. earthly perspective?

  394. Are the purposes

  395. and priorities

  396. of your life

  397. governed by

  398. and grounded

  399. in God's word

  400. in the scriptures?

  401. Or have you adopted

  402. the world's agenda

  403. of health

  404. and wealth

  405. and sex

  406. and success

  407. at all costs?

  408. Are your relational

  409. impulses

  410. driven by

  411. the principles

  412. of scripture?

  413. How you treat people?

  414. Or is it determined

  415. more by Taylor Swift lyrics

  416. than TikTok videos?

  417. Is your perception

  418. of beauty

  419. shaped by the virtues

  420. described in scripture?

  421. Or is your view

  422. of beauty

  423. motivated

  424. or shaped

  425. by the style trends

  426. on Instagram?

  427. Are you motivated

  428. and constrained

  429. by the love of God?

  430. Or do you live

  431. primarily for the love

  432. and approval

  433. of man?

  434. When John actually

  435. sees

  436. Babylon the great

  437. prostitute

  438. in his vision

  439. in verse 3

  440. he sees that she

  441. is sitting

  442. on a scarlet beast

  443. that was full

  444. of blasphemous names

  445. and it has 7 heads

  446. and 10 horns.

  447. This description

  448. is a tip off

  449. that we've seen

  450. this beast before.

  451. In Revelation 13.1

  452. we saw a beast

  453. with 10 horns

  454. and 7 heads

  455. with 10 diatems

  456. on its horns

  457. and blasphemous names

  458. on its heads.

  459. And when I preached

  460. on chapter 13

  461. I explained to you

  462. that this beast

  463. is a hybrid beast.

  464. It's a combination

  465. of the four beasts

  466. that are prophesied of

  467. in Daniel 7

  468. that represent

  469. the Babylonian Empire

  470. the Medo-Persian Empire

  471. the Macedonian Empire

  472. and finally

  473. the Roman Empire.

  474. So then this beast

  475. is not primarily

  476. a representation

  477. of a single antichrist

  478. as much as

  479. it is a composite symbol

  480. and a corporate representative

  481. of all antichrists

  482. of the worldly kings

  483. and kingdoms

  484. that oppose God

  485. and persecute his people.

  486. The beast in short

  487. represents political power

  488. and Babylon in short

  489. represents cultural

  490. and economic power.

  491. And there is an unholy alliance

  492. between the two.

  493. We are told in verse 7

  494. that this beast

  495. carries Babylon around

  496. meaning this beast's

  497. political authority

  498. serves as a pedestal

  499. for Babylon's cultural

  500. and economic prominence.

  501. the political powers

  502. of this world

  503. ensure the ascendancy

  504. and dominance

  505. of sin and worldliness

  506. in our culture.

  507. Remember the beast's policy

  508. in chapter 13 verse 17

  509. no one can buy or sell

  510. unless he has the mark

  511. of the beast

  512. that is the name of the beast

  513. or the number of its name.

  514. Unless you pledge allegiance

  515. to the beast

  516. and commit idolatry

  517. you cannot buy

  518. and sell and prosper.

  519. So then people

  520. who would grow rich

  521. people who would grow rich

  522. must prostitute themselves

  523. with Babylon

  524. and they also must

  525. prostrate themselves

  526. at the feet of the beast

  527. and worship him.

  528. And there's something

  529. about this dominion

  530. that the beast

  531. and the prophet

  532. have over the world

  533. that's alluring.

  534. I will elaborate on this

  535. a little further later

  536. but the beast

  537. and the prostitute

  538. both imitate Christ

  539. and his church respectively.

  540. Three times we are told

  541. here that this beast

  542. was and is not

  543. and is to come.

  544. This is a crude imitation

  545. of God and Christ.

  546. God is repeatedly described

  547. in the book of Revelation

  548. as the eternal one

  549. chapter 1 verse 4

  550. chapter 1 verse 8

  551. chapter 4 verse 8

  552. as the one who was

  553. and is and is to come.

  554. Moreover we are assured

  555. repeatedly

  556. all throughout Revelation

  557. that Jesus is the one

  558. who is coming soon.

  559. So then this beast

  560. is imitating that.

  561. It says in verse 8

  562. that the world

  563. will marvel

  564. to see the beast

  565. because it was

  566. and is not

  567. and is to come.

  568. This is alluding back

  569. to chapter 13 verse 3

  570. which talked about

  571. how the beast

  572. was one of its heads

  573. seemed to have

  574. a mortal wound.

  575. It died basically

  576. but it was raised

  577. to life again.

  578. It was healed

  579. and the whole world

  580. marveled at it

  581. and followed it.

  582. Notice the word marvel

  583. is used there

  584. as well as here.

  585. in parallel.

  586. So one of its heads

  587. the beast's heads

  588. one of the kings

  589. that seemingly dies

  590. and is raised to life again

  591. is making a mockery

  592. of Jesus

  593. a parody of Jesus

  594. who was described

  595. in chapter 5

  596. as having been inflicted

  597. with a mortal wound

  598. and yet standing

  599. risen.

  600. Irish poet

  601. Oscar Wilde

  602. popularized the proverb

  603. imitation is the

  604. sincerest form

  605. of flattery

  606. that mediocrity

  607. can pay to greatness.

  608. Another proverb says

  609. hypocrisy is

  610. an homage

  611. that vice

  612. pays to virtue.

  613. This is what's

  614. going on here.

  615. The dragon

  616. and the beast

  617. cannot fix

  618. their mediocrity

  619. so they imitate

  620. God and Christ

  621. in their greatness.

  622. The beast

  623. can only produce

  624. cheap knockoffs

  625. of the real thing.

  626. so everything about him

  627. his kingdom

  628. and his glory

  629. his name

  630. it's all bootleg

  631. bogus

  632. and this beast

  633. derives

  634. its plausibility

  635. its credibility

  636. by imitating

  637. the true king

  638. Jesus.

  639. But this imitation

  640. is alluring.

  641. Verse 8 says

  642. that the world

  643. will marvel

  644. to see the beast.

  645. Similarly verse 6

  646. says that

  647. when John saw

  648. the great prostitute

  649. he marveled

  650. greatly.

  651. John is obviously

  652. not worshipping

  653. Babylon

  654. in the same way

  655. that the earth dwellers

  656. are following

  657. after her

  658. and marveling

  659. at the beast

  660. because he knows

  661. exactly what she is.

  662. The angel tells him

  663. exactly what this

  664. woman is.

  665. John can see

  666. the name

  667. the profanities

  668. the blasphemous name

  669. on her head

  670. but when he still

  671. sees this woman

  672. this Babylon

  673. all rayed

  674. in purple

  675. and scarlet

  676. a beautiful

  677. seductive

  678. nightgown

  679. adorned

  680. with gold

  681. and jewels

  682. and pearls

  683. holding in her hand

  684. a golden cup

  685. and he sees her

  686. sitting on this

  687. powerful beast

  688. writing

  689. John marvels

  690. greatly

  691. prompting the angel's

  692. implicit rebuke

  693. in verse 7

  694. why do you marvel?

  695. Don't be amazed

  696. by her

  697. don't be dismayed

  698. by her

  699. I will explain

  700. to you

  701. her full identity

  702. and faith.

  703. There's something

  704. about the rule

  705. and authority

  706. of the beast

  707. and the Babylon

  708. the prostitute

  709. something about

  710. the beast's rule

  711. and authority

  712. and power

  713. resembles God's

  714. rule and authority

  715. and power

  716. something about

  717. the beauty

  718. and the diversity

  719. of Babylon

  720. resembles the beauty

  721. and diversity

  722. of the people

  723. of God

  724. the church

  725. of Christ

  726. there's something

  727. about the productivity

  728. and prosperity

  729. of Babylon

  730. that resembles

  731. our heavenly

  732. inheritance

  733. and labor

  734. for the Lord

  735. in the kingdom

  736. of God

  737. but don't marvel

  738. at the great

  739. prostitute

  740. what makes you

  741. marvel at the city

  742. of man

  743. is it its

  744. cosmopolitanism

  745. with its

  746. various languages

  747. and cuisines

  748. the world

  749. is your oyster

  750. does it make

  751. you feel cultured

  752. not boxed in

  753. by the narrow

  754. bigotry

  755. and prejudice

  756. that you attribute

  757. to your parents

  758. or the small town

  759. that you grew up in

  760. or is it the city's

  761. prosperity

  762. cities generate

  763. so much wealth

  764. people living

  765. in urban areas

  766. earn significantly more

  767. and have higher

  768. living standards

  769. than people in rural areas

  770. or is it the city's

  771. intellectualism

  772. are you drawn

  773. to the air

  774. of sophistication

  775. and academic rigor

  776. that permeate our city

  777. or is it the many

  778. sensual pleasures

  779. and delights

  780. that the city

  781. of man promises

  782. Babylon

  783. the city of man

  784. is only a crude

  785. imitation of the

  786. new Jerusalem

  787. the city of God

  788. so do not marvel

  789. at the debauchery

  790. and dominion

  791. of the prostitute

  792. also keep in mind

  793. the eventual destruction

  794. and desolation

  795. of the beast

  796. in Babylon

  797. I've said to you before

  798. that the description

  799. of the beast

  800. as the one who was

  801. and is not

  802. and is about to rise

  803. is John's creative use

  804. of the Nero legends

  805. that were popular

  806. during his day

  807. Nero Caesar

  808. was the emperor of Rome

  809. from 54 to 68 AD

  810. but when he was

  811. eventually deposed

  812. by the Roman senate

  813. he killed himself

  814. but because his death

  815. was shrouded in mystery

  816. and there weren't

  817. many witnesses

  818. there were really

  819. no witnesses

  820. many people refused

  821. to accept the rumor

  822. of his death

  823. and believed that

  824. Nero had taken refuge

  825. among the Parthians

  826. who lived in the north

  827. and that he would return

  828. that Nero would return

  829. to exact vengeance

  830. on those who had deposed

  831. him in order to

  832. retake the kingdom

  833. so this was a myth

  834. that was very popular

  835. called Nero returned

  836. or Nero living again

  837. two related myths

  838. and this myth

  839. was so widely believed

  840. that historically

  841. there were three

  842. Nero imposters

  843. emerged in the coming years

  844. after Nero's death

  845. all trying to lead

  846. a rebellion

  847. trying to claim

  848. to be this return of Nero

  849. and John is making

  850. creative use

  851. of this Nero legend

  852. because he's using Nero

  853. as the type

  854. or the pattern

  855. of the antichrist

  856. because of Nero's

  857. notorious persecution

  858. of Christians

  859. second century

  860. Christian author

  861. Tertullian

  862. calls Nero

  863. the first

  864. that persecuted

  865. the Christian doctrine

  866. third century

  867. Lactantius

  868. also wrote

  869. that Nero

  870. was the first

  871. that persecuted

  872. the servants of God

  873. so he's the first

  874. great persecutor

  875. of the church

  876. and in that sense

  877. becomes the prototype

  878. and the archetype

  879. of all those

  880. who would come

  881. as antichrist

  882. to persecute

  883. God's people

  884. and that's why

  885. Tertullian later

  886. calls Emperor Domitian

  887. who also persecuted

  888. Christians

  889. the second Nero

  890. in this way

  891. this beast

  892. who has been healed

  893. of his mortal wound

  894. appears in the

  895. repeated rise

  896. and fall

  897. of states

  898. and kingdoms

  899. that oppose God

  900. and oppress his people

  901. in scripture

  902. first it was Egypt

  903. and then Babylon

  904. then Persia

  905. then Macedonia

  906. and then Rome

  907. and so on

  908. right down

  909. to our modern age

  910. but I think

  911. at the end

  912. of the end times

  913. there will also be

  914. a singular

  915. antichrist

  916. who will conquer

  917. the people of God

  918. like never before

  919. that's why

  920. verse 8 says

  921. that the beast

  922. that was

  923. and is not

  924. and is about

  925. to rise

  926. from the bottomless pit

  927. and go to destruction

  928. it talks about

  929. how he is not

  930. during John's time

  931. this beast

  932. is not

  933. but he's about

  934. to rise

  935. from the bottomless pit

  936. this final beast

  937. is a part

  938. of this beast

  939. in chapter 13

  940. but according

  941. to verse 11

  942. it is an eighth head

  943. that comes

  944. at the end

  945. of the end

  946. though it belongs

  947. to the seven

  948. it is an eighth head

  949. and it goes

  950. to destruction

  951. people have tried

  952. to decipher

  953. verse 10

  954. the meaning of it

  955. in so many different ways

  956. seven kings

  957. five of whom have fallen

  958. one is

  959. the other is not yet to come

  960. and when he does come

  961. he must remain

  962. only a little while

  963. people have tried

  964. to pin

  965. these exact

  966. exact words

  967. on individuals

  968. historical figures

  969. but there

  970. has been no consensus

  971. because I don't think

  972. John intended

  973. for us to pin

  974. these people

  975. on exact historical figures

  976. there are seven kings

  977. because as John does

  978. all throughout the book

  979. seven is the number

  980. for completeness

  981. and the seven kings

  982. represent all

  983. of the worldly rulers

  984. that persecute

  985. God's people

  986. during the church age

  987. and this eighth one

  988. is the final one

  989. the end of the end

  990. the ultimate antichrist

  991. who will reign

  992. with the ten horns

  993. in verse 12

  994. who are called

  995. the ten kings

  996. who have not yet

  997. received royal power

  998. and they are to receive

  999. authority as kings

  1000. for one hour

  1001. together with the beast

  1002. but these ten kings

  1003. will eventually

  1004. hand over their power

  1005. and authority

  1006. to the beast

  1007. and together

  1008. they will make war

  1009. on the lamb

1010. it says in verse 14

1011. notice just how many times

  1012. this passage reminds us

  1013. of the final destruction

  1014. of the beast

  1015. and the prostitute

  1016. it's ironic

  1017. that the beast was

  1018. and is not

1019. and is about to rise

  1020. from the bottomless pit

  1021. but for what

  1022. what does

  1023. what purpose

  1024. and to what end

  1025. does he rise

  1026. from the bottomless pit

  1027. verse 8 tells us

  1028. the beast was

  1029. and is not

1030. and is about to rise

  1031. from the bottomless pit

  1032. and go to destruction

  1033. that's the destiny

  1034. of the beast

  1035. when this eighth king

  1036. finally comes

  1037. what will happen

  1038. to him

  1039. verse 11 tells us

  1040. it goes to destruction

  1041. again

  1042. these ten kings

  1043. will reign

  1044. with the final antichrist

  1045. and hand over

  1046. their authority

  1047. to the beast

  1048. how long will

  1049. their reign last

  1050. verse 12 tells us

  1051. only for one hour

  1052. indicating a short

  1053. defined

  1054. limited period of time

1055. this is in stark contrast

  1056. to our lord jesus

  1057. the lamb of god

1058. who is the lord of the lords

  1059. and king of kings

  1060. unlike the beast

  1061. and these kings

  1062. who come

  1063. rise only in order

  1064. to go to destruction

  1065. the resurrected jesus

  1066. says in verse

  1067. chapter 1

  1068. verses 17 and 18

  1069. fear not

  1070. i am the first

  1071. and the last

  1072. and the living one

  1073. i died

  1074. and behold

  1075. i am alive

  1076. forevermore

1077. and i have the keys

  1078. of death

  1079. and hades

  1080. jesus died

  1081. for our sins

  1082. on the cross

  1083. and he was raised

  1084. from the dead

  1085. so that death

  1086. no longer has

  1087. dominion over him

  1088. unlike this beast

  1089. who will come

  1090. and only go

  1091. to destruction

  1092. likewise with babylon

1093. it says in verse 16

  1094. the ten horns

  1095. and the beast

  1096. will hate

  1097. the prostitute

  1098. they will make her

  1099. desolate and naked

  1100. and devour her flesh

  1101. and burn her up

  1102. with fire

  1103. that's the sad fate

  1104. of all prostitutes

  1105. eventually they're

  1106. discarded

  1107. when they're no longer

  1108. useful for the pleasures

  1109. of the man

  1110. that they serve

1111. at the end of the end

  1112. the great prostitutes

  1113. unholy alliance

  1114. with the beast

  1115. will fall apart

  1116. and the great prostitute

  1117. will be abandoned

  1118. left desolate

  1119. and naked

  1120. by the very kings

  1121. that ravaged her

  1122. for their pleasure

  1123. the three descriptions

  1124. of babylon's

  1125. ultimate fate

  1126. fit the metaphors

1127. that are in this chapter

  1128. like a discarded prostitute

  1129. she will be desolate

  1130. and naked

  1131. like an animal

  1132. that is preyed upon

  1133. she will be devoured

1134. her flesh will be devoured

  1135. by the beast

  1136. and like a city

  1137. that is conquered

1138. she will be burned up

  1139. with fire

  1140. the political side

  1141. of the world's

  1142. anti-god system

  1143. will turn against

  1144. the center

  1145. of the world's

  1146. cultural and economic

  1147. influence

  1148. and they will together

  1149. become undone

  1150. because as Jesus said

  1151. in Mark 3 26

1152. if Satan has risen up

  1153. against himself

  1154. and is divided

  1155. he cannot stand

  1156. he cannot stand

  1157. but is coming

  1158. to an end

  1159. that's how

  1160. the beast

  1161. and the prostitute

  1162. and Satan

  1163. the great dragon

  1164. will all come

  1165. to an end

  1166. the sovereignty

  1167. and providence

  1168. of God

  1169. in all of this

  1170. should give us

  1171. much comfort

  1172. notice in verse 17

  1173. the reason why

  1174. the beast

  1175. and the ten kings

  1176. turn against Babylon

  1177. it says

  1178. for God

  1179. has put it

  1180. into their hearts

  1181. to carry out

  1182. his purpose

1183. by being of one mind

  1184. and handing over

  1185. their royal power

  1186. to the beast

  1187. until the words

  1188. of God

  1189. are fulfilled

  1190. that's an amazing

  1191. verse

  1192. the Bible

  1193. never paints

  1194. a dualistic

  1195. picture

  1196. of God

  1197. pitted against

  1198. Satan

  1199. as if they're

  1200. equals

  1201. kind of

1202. in a do or die

  1203. match

  1204. Satan

  1205. is never

  1206. God's

  1207. equal

  1208. to suggest

  1209. it is blasphemous

  1210. and insulting

  1211. to the glory

  1212. of God

  1213. Satan

  1214. will always

  1215. and forever

  1216. do God's bidding

  1217. no matter how hard

  1218. he tries

  1219. to rebel

  1220. it's God

  1221. who puts it

  1222. into the heart

  1223. of the antichrist

  1224. and his puppets

  1225. to unite

  1226. in their desolation

  1227. of Babylon

  1228. it's God

  1229. who puts it

  1230. in their heart

  1231. so that they

  1232. together wage

  1233. war against the lamb

  1234. and his saints

  1235. so that he can

  1236. fulfill the word

  1237. of God

  1238. that's so much

  1239. power

  1240. so much majesty

  1241. authority

  1242. glory

  1243. and that

  1244. ought to give us

  1245. hope and endurance

  1246. when we know

  1247. that our victory

  1248. is assured

  1249. in the end

  1250. in 2017

  1251. Super Bowl 51

  1252. the New England

  1253. Patriots

  1254. accomplished the

  1255. largest comeback

  1256. in Super Bowl history

1257. how many of you guys

  1258. there for that

  1259. yeah

  1260. not many

  1261. I wasn't there

  1262. either

  1263. I mean I was there

  1264. in front of TV

  1265. is what I mean

  1266. they came back

  1267. from a 28-3

  1268. deficit

  1269. in the third quarter

  1270. to win the game

1271. it was an incredible game

1272. it's the only football game

  1273. that I've watched

  1274. more than once

  1275. and when I talked

1276. to a friend of mine

  1277. Toby

  1278. after the game

  1279. he told me how

  1280. he told his kids

  1281. to go to bed

  1282. during the third quarter

  1283. because it's over

  1284. you know

  1285. they're not coming back

  1286. from this

  1287. so go to bed

1288. and they went to bed

  1289. and they missed

  1290. the greatest comeback

  1291. of the greatest game

  1292. in NFL history

1293. I'm not biased at all

  1294. and they lost hope

  1295. and they despaired

  1296. but imagine later on

  1297. if they're re-watching this

  1298. the recorded game

1299. do you think that they will

  1300. stop watching

  1301. in the third quarter?

  1302. of course not

1303. that's when the fun starts

  1304. right

  1305. because you know

  1306. what the outcome is

1307. you know they come back

1308. and win in the end

  1309. they can endure

  1310. the three quarters

  1311. of thumping

  1312. by the Atlanta Falcons

  1313. because they know

  1314. what's coming

  1315. in the end

  1316. I hesitated to use

  1317. this illustration

  1318. because

  1319. even though there are

  1320. good

  1321. good things

  1322. about sports

  1323. and in sports

  1324. that we can enjoy

  1325. responsibly

  1326. it also appeals

  1327. to the vanity

  1328. and pride of man

  1329. like all things

  1330. that are of Babylon

  1331. and they tend

  1332. toward idolatry

  1333. unless checked

  1334. by the redeeming grace

  1335. of God

  1336. but it illustrates

  1337. the importance

  1338. of faith

  1339. and hope

  1340. when you feel

  1341. downtrodden

  1342. by the sinful world

  1343. and the flesh

  1344. and the devil

  1345. when you're weary

  1346. from your spiritual battle

1347. when you're on the verge

  1348. of despair

1349. when you begin to wonder

  1350. if it's

  1351. is it worth

  1352. following Christ?

  1353. is it worth

  1354. bearing all this cost?

  1355. keep in mind

  1356. the destruction

  1357. of the beast

  1358. and the desolation

  1359. of Babylon

  1360. they will make war

  1361. on the lamb

  1362. and the lamb

  1363. will conquer them

1364. for he is lord of lords

  1365. and king of kings

  1366. and those with him

  1367. are called

  1368. and chosen

  1369. and faithful

  1370. it's this hope

  1371. for the end

  1372. the triumph

  1373. of the lamb

  1374. that will enable us

  1375. to be overcomers

  1376. instead of suck-comers

  1377. and that brings me

  1378. to my final point

  1379. verse 14

  1380. reminds us

  1381. that we

1382. who belong to the lamb

  1383. are called

  1384. and chosen

  1385. and faithful

  1386. the words called

  1387. and chosen

  1388. both refer to

  1389. God's unilateral

  1390. act of choosing us

  1391. his election

  1392. and his effectual call

  1393. of his people

1394. out of all the nations

1395. and out of all the peoples

  1396. of the world

  1397. God chose us

  1398. to be his people

  1399. and God called us

  1400. to be his witnesses

1401. and to belong to him

  1402. and as such

1403. we should be set apart

  1404. for God

1405. as the bride of the lamb

  1406. as his bride

  1407. we should be faithful

  1408. to him

  1409. and resist the seductive

  1410. power of the prostitute

  1411. there's an implicit

  1412. command there

  1413. in describing

  1414. God's people

  1415. as faithful

  1416. the word faithful

  1417. is reminiscent

  1418. of Jesus' command

  1419. in Revelation 2.10

  1420. be faithful

  1421. unto death

1422. and I will give you

  1423. the crown of life

  1424. be faithful

  1425. trustworthy witnesses

  1426. just like Jesus

  1427. but God is not

  1428. commanding us here

  1429. to earn his favor

  1430. by our faithfulness

  1431. rather

  1432. the people of God

  1433. are faithful

  1434. because they are called

  1435. and chosen

  1436. as you saw earlier

  1437. in when describing

1438. the people of the world

  1439. the dwellers on earth

  1440. who marvel

1441. and follow after the beast

1442. it said that they were

  1443. specifically those

  1444. whose names were not

1445. written in the book of life

  1446. it's because

  1447. we are called

  1448. and chosen

1449. that we do not marvel

  1450. at the beast

  1451. and follow him

  1452. but instead remain faithful

  1453. to the bride

  1454. of the lamb

  1455. Babylon the great prostitute

  1456. serves as literary foil

  1457. to the church

1458. the bride of the lamb

  1459. in several important ways

  1460. notice how John

  1461. is carried away

  1462. in the spirit

  1463. into the wilderness

  1464. in verse 3

1465. where he sees a woman

  1466. do you remember

  1467. when another time

  1468. when John was carried

  1469. in the spirit

  1470. into a wilderness

  1471. to see a woman

  1472. in chapter 13

  1473. or chapter 12

  1474. verse 6

  1475. and in there

  1476. he saw a woman

  1477. in the desert

  1478. and it was

  1479. the woman

  1480. that represented

  1481. the church

  1482. the people of God

  1483. and she was nourished

  1484. by God

  1485. in the wilderness

  1486. but that's contrasted here

  1487. with this woman

  1488. who is a prostitute

  1489. in the wilderness

  1490. and she instead

  1491. of being nourished

  1492. by God

  1493. is nourished

  1494. by her sexual immorality

  1495. intercourse

  1496. with the people

  1497. the nations

  1498. in the languages

  1499. the contrast

  1500. is reinforced

  1501. by the way

  1502. Babylon is introduced

  1503. in verse 1

  1504. it says

  1505. then one of the

  1506. seven angels

1507. who had the seven bowls

1508. came and said to me

1509. come I will show you

  1510. the judgment

  1511. of the great prostitute

  1512. now compare that

  1513. to Revelation 21 9

  1514. where it says

  1515. then came

1516. one of the seven angels

1517. who had the seven bowls

1518. full of the last plagues

  1519. and spoke to me

  1520. saying

1521. come I will show you

  1522. the bride

1523. the wife of the lamb

  1524. it may be

  1525. the exact same angel

  1526. that's introducing

  1527. both of these women

  1528. they're both

  1529. the angel

  1530. that had the bowl

1531. of the wrath of God

  1532. and they both

  1533. use the same formula

  1534. to introduce them

1535. come I will show you

  1536. the prostitute

  1537. or the bride

  1538. the great prostitute

1539. is the city of man

1540. but the bride of the lamb

1541. is the city of God

1542. the holy city of Jerusalem

  1543. it says

  1544. in chapter 21 verse 10

  1545. the prostitute

  1546. was drunk

  1547. with the blood

  1548. of the saints

1549. the blood of the martyrs

  1550. of Jesus

1551. but the bride of the lamb

  1552. is washed clean

  1553. in the blood

  1554. of the lamb

  1555. Revelation 7 14

  1556. Babylon

  1557. has written

  1558. on her forehead

  1559. the name

  1560. Babylon the great

  1561. mother of prostitutes

  1562. and of earth's abominations

  1563. but for new Jerusalem

  1564. the name of God

  1565. and of the lamb

1566. will be on their foreheads

  1567. it says in Revelation 21 4

  1568. at the end

  1569. of the end

  1570. the great prostitute

  1571. will be desolate

  1572. and naked

1573. but the bride of the lamb

  1574. will be clothed

  1575. in white garments

  1576. it says

  1577. throughout Revelation

  1578. no we will not

  1579. be desolate

  1580. and abandoned

  1581. God will dwell

  1582. with us forever

  1583. and wipe every tear

  1584. from our eyes

  1585. are you desperate

  1586. and discouraged

  1587. this morning

  1588. because of your own

  1589. sinfulness

  1590. do you feel defiled

  1591. by your spiritual adultery

  1592. do you feel

  1593. that you're more

  1594. like the whore

  1595. Babylon

  1596. and less like

  1597. the pure

  1598. virgin bride

  1599. of Christ

  1600. there's hope

  1601. for you

1602. and for all of us

  1603. because

  1604. Jesus Christ

  1605. our bridegroom

  1606. is also our redeemer

  1607. contained within

  1608. the genealogy

  1609. of Jesus our savior

  1610. in Matthew chapter 1

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  1611. is not one prostitute

  1612. but two prostitutes

  1613. in the ancestry

  1614. of Jesus

  1615. Tamar

  1616. who prostituted

  1617. herself

  1618. and Rahab

  1619. the prostitute

  1620. in the book

  1621. of Hosea

  1622. in order that

  1623. God might

  1624. show

  1625. the Israelites

  1626. what his relationship

  1627. with them is like

  1628. he commands

  1629. prophet Hosea

  1630. to take

  1631. and marry

  1632. a wife

  1633. of whoredom

  1634. and have children

  1635. of whoredom

  1636. for the land

  1637. commits great whoredom

  1638. by forsaking the Lord

  1639. then in Hosea

  1640. 2.23

  1641. God promises

  1642. that he will redeem

  1643. his unfaithful

  1644. whoring people

  1645. saying

  1646. I will have mercy

  1647. on no mercy

  1648. and I will say

  1649. to not my people

  1650. you are my people

  1651. no mercy

  1652. and not my people

  1653. are respectively

  1654. names of the daughter

  1655. and son

  1656. of Hosea

  1657. and Gomer

  1658. his unfaithful wife

  1659. his whoring wife

  1660. he will say

  1661. to them

  1662. to no mercy

  1663. I will have mercy

  1664. to not my people

  1665. you are my people

  1666. and he shall say

  1667. you are my God

  1668. that's what we read

1669. in our assurance of pardon

  1670. from 1 Peter 2.9-10

  1671. today

1672. but you are a chosen race

  1673. a royal priesthood

  1674. a holy nation

1675. a people for his own possession

  1676. that you may proclaim

  1677. the excellencies

1678. of him who called you

  1679. out of darkness

  1680. into his marvelous light

1681. once you were not a people

1682. but now you are God's people

1683. once you had not received mercy

1684. but now you have received mercy

  1685. this is

  1686. a staggering reality

1687. God out of his love for us

1688. arranged for his only son

  1689. to marry a prostitute

1690. in God's grace and mercy

  1691. the whore

  1692. becomes the pure virgin

  1693. bride of the land

1694. isn't that why God commands

  1695. us husbands

  1696. to love our wives

1697. as Christ loved the church

1698. and gave himself up for her

  1699. by washing her

1700. with the water of the word

  1701. that she might be

  1702. set apart

  1703. so he might present

  1704. the church to himself

  1705. in splendor

  1706. without spot

  1707. or wrinkle

  1708. or any such thing

1709. that she might be holy

  1710. and without blemish

  1711. we were all

  1712. once prostitutes

  1713. in league with Babylon

  1714. but Jesus

  1715. sanctified us

  1716. for himself

1717. by dying on the cross

  1718. for our sins

  1719. and being raised

  1720. from the dead

  1721. Jesus called us

  1722. and he chose us

1723. to be his holy bride

1724. so how can we be faithful

  1725. to this bridegroom

  1726. it's by

  1727. abiding in

  1728. Jesus

  1729. the faithful one

  1730. he's described

  1731. again and again

  1732. throughout revelation

  1733. as the faithful

  1734. and true one

  1735. by believing

  1736. in this gospel

  1737. of what Jesus

  1738. has done for us

  1739. by putting

  1740. all our faith

  1741. in Jesus

1742. and not in our own

  1743. righteousness

  1744. we cling to Jesus

  1745. and abide in him

  1746. and in abiding

  1747. in the faithful one

  1748. we ourselves

  1749. are strengthened

  1750. and enabled

  1751. to be faithful

  1752. to him

  1753. let's pray

  1754. that God

  1755. will help us

  1756. to do that

  1757. Father thank you

  1758. for your mercy

1759. for sending your only son

  1760. to take for himself

  1761. a wife of whoredom

1762. so that we might be

  1763. rescued

  1764. redeemed

  1765. cleansed

  1766. called

  1767. chosen

  1768. and what glorious

  1769. future

  1770. what glorious

  1771. reality

  1772. you

  1773. impart to us

1774. that we get to be

1775. the bride of the lamb

  1776. pure and without blemish

  1777. because of Jesus

  1778. and his

  1779. sacrifice

  1780. on the cross

  1781. Lord

  1782. fill us with

  1783. the renewed

  1784. sense of wonder

  1785. help us instead

  1786. marveling at

  1787. the beast

  1788. and the prostitute

  1789. help us to grow

  1790. in our

  1791. in marveling at

  1792. in worshiping

  1793. our Lord Jesus

  1794. and his wondrous gospel

  1795. what he has done

  1796. help us

  1797. fill us with

  1798. thanksgiving

  1799. in response

  1800. to that

  1801. in Jesus name

  1802. we pray

  1803. amen

  1804. exhale

  1805. so

  1806. receiving

  1807. induction

  1808. prayer

  1809. JEFF

  1810. you

  1811. okay
