  1. call your attention to 1 Corinthians 15

  2. this morning.

  3. And our usual practice is to do book

  4. studies verse by verse, chapter by

  5. chapter, going through books. We're

  6. taking a big break from that. And for

  7. those of you that are new, we're doing

  8. two things at once. We're doing a series

  9. on great texts in the Bible. And we're

  10. going through different books of the

  11. Bible, and we're picking one text from

  12. that book and preaching it and then

  13. moving to the next book. uh and we were

  14. doing that. But the other series we're

  15. doing is uh the uh the teachings of the

  16. Bible on the resurrection of Jesus

  17. Christ. That's a big one. That's an

  18. important one. It's a major one. And so

  19. that's something we've also been

  20. involved in the last several months. And

  21. 1 Corinthians 15 is obviously an

  22. important passage in regard to that

  23. subject. And so for those of you that

  24. are new and are just jumping into this,

  25. we're mainly emphasizing the physical

  26. bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ and

  27. uh the results of that to us and the and

  28. so 1 Corinthians 15 is a good place to

  29. be. Now, this particular chapter is a

  30. long one. It's 58 verses. And I'm not

  31. going to go through all 58 verses in

  32. this series. We've done that other

  33. times, but I just want to emphasize some

  34. things as we think about this chapter.

  35. And I'm assuming you have some

  36. familiarity about it.

  37. But think about the value of it.

  38. This is a long hard chapter, 58 verses

  39. to teach and to hear or to read

  40. personally. But there's an apologetical

  41. value that's immense.

  42. We need to know if we should be experts

  43. in anything, it should be the

  44. resurrection of Jesus.

  45. One thing we should talk about with

  46. people is not this issue, that issue,

  47. some other issue. There's one issue if

  48. you want to do personal work. Did Jesus

  49. come out of the grave or not?

  50. That's it.

  51. Keep the main thing the main thing.

  52. because if he came out of the grave he

  53. is who he said he was and Christianity

  54. is legitimate and it we should give it

  55. if he didn't forget it so it's very

  56. important subject and there's an

  57. apologetical value in the sense that we

  58. can defend the faith from this section

  59. we should all be experts on the physical

  60. resurrection of Jesus now you know

  61. non-Christians when you try to talk to

  62. them they want to jump around and talk

  63. about everything else but

  64. Be gracious, be loving, but say, "Look,

  65. this is the most important thing. If

  66. this isn't true, you don't need your

  67. answers to the others. It's a

  68. Christianity is of no value. If this is

  69. true, it's of immense value. And so

  70. stick with this. Even if you're an

  71. expert on the other things,

  72. focus on this.

  73. The apologetical value, which means the

  74. ability to defend our faith, is immense.

  75. So I don't waste my time personally

  76. defending this part of the Bible or that

  77. part of the Bible or this issue or that

  78. issue. I go I best as much as I can I go

  79. right to this. The apologetical value

  80. the theological value is immense. This

  81. isn't my outline. This is my

  82. introduction.

  83. The theological value is immense.

  84. Uh the uh um John Murray at Westminster

  85. Seminary years ago said, "Our theology

  86. should be practical and our practice

  87. should be what?"

  88. >> Theological. A great for that

  89. Presbyterian theologian. It's a great

  90. thing. Our theology should be practical

  91. and our practice should be theological.

  92. So this is a

  93. there's a lot of theology in chapter 15,

  94. but it's wearing workc clothes.

  95. And the and the remember the last verse

  96. it it hits every it sums up everything

  97. in these 58 verses and it says therefore

  98. my beloved brethren be ye steadfast

  99. unmovable always abounding in the work

  100. of the Lord for as you know that your

  101. labor is not in vain in the Lord. That

  102. therefore is very important.

  103. What's the therefore therefore? It's to

  104. connect the application with the other

  105. 54 verses or 57 verses.

  106. So it's the theological value is very

  107. important. The practical value, the

  108. historical value is important.

  109. We believe in the historicity of the

  110. resurrection of Jesus. It's not just

  111. something that's done uh in in uh some

  112. kind of fantasy uh thought. if something

  113. really happened in history. Either it

  114. did or it didn't. If it didn't, just

  115. throw the Bible in the waste can. If it

  116. did, then you better know this book and

  117. you better know this savior.

  118. So, the the historical value is

  119. important and we're going to look at a

  120. lot of that to then. The prophetical

  121. value is important.

  122. Do you know that your body, if you're a

  123. Christian, is going to be made like

  124. Jesus's glorious body?

  125. Now, if you don't know what his glorious

  126. body is like,

  127. then you don't know what your

  128. current body is going to be like.

  129. This is kind of important on a personal

  130. level.

  131. This is not reincarnation where you come

  132. back as somebody else in another life.

  133. This is resurrection where you retain

  134. your own identity and personality and

  135. you come back in the body you were born

  136. with changed

  137. and this chapter teaches that

  138. it it it it's a in uh it says this

  139. corruptible must put on incorruptible.

  140. This mortal must put on immortality.

  141. That's a change in this body.

  142. Incorruptible means not able to age.

  143. Immortal means not able to die.

  144. So that's kind of good.

  145. I'm looking forward to that. As I told

  146. you before, that's when I'm going to

  147. take up extreme sports. [laughter]

  148. I'm leaving them all for my

  149. incorruptible immortal body. I don't

  150. need to do them now. I'll get my thrills

  151. then.

  152. So, so it's important to know that this

  153. body has value

  154. because it's going into eternity.

  155. And so that's that's a practical value

  156. that's important and we'll see as we go

  157. through there. There's practical

  158. applications today

  159. on how I ought to treat my body because

  160. it's going into eternity.

  161. So there there's personal value, there's

  162. this motivational value in the last

  163. verse. Therefore, my brethren, that's

  164. motivation.

  165. Because of all of this,

  166. this is how we should live.

  167. We can know things but not be motivated

  168. by them.

  169. You know, a lot of things that you don't

  170. those things don't motivate you. They're

  171. just things, you know. But this is

  172. something that's to motivate us.

  173. It's to move us. It's to change the way

  174. we think. Change the way we live. Change

  175. our priorities. Change the way we use

  176. our time. Change the way we look at

  177. ourselves. Change the way we look at

  178. other people. There's a motivational

  179. value. There's an eternal value. We need

  180. to know

  181. just how important

  182. the gospel is and salvation through

  183. Jesus Christ is. And that every human

  184. being that you've ever met or haven't

  185. met,

  186. from the fetus in the womb to the

  187. oldest, sickest person you know, is

  188. going to spend eternity someplace.

  189. And every person you know, everyone, and

  190. the ones you don't know,

  191. are going to be resurrected.

  192. There's not a human being on earth

  193. that's not going to be resurrected.

  194. But the resurrection is going to be very

  195. different for some than for others.

  196. John chapter 5 and and many other places

    John 5 chapter mention

  197. and and so it's it's there's a eternal

  198. value

  199. as the old himwriter says that keep

  200. eternity eternal values in view

  201. eternity's values in view

  202. that we can't know even know how to live

  203. this life if we don't know about the

  204. next life

  205. and it's very important there's an

  206. ecclesiastical value this is supposed to

  207. change the way the Corinthians live

  208. among themselves.

  209. It's supposed to change the way we live

  210. among ourselves. There's an individual

  211. value. We we look at ourselves

  212. individually. We look at our collective

  213. body differently.

  214. I'm looking forward to my resurrection

  215. body.

  216. Aren't you?

  217. Are are you getting ready for that? Is

  218. that something that motivates you today?

  219. And so there's this this eternal value.

  220. Uh there's an ecclesiastical value. The

  221. church it we're all res we going to see

  222. each other. We're going to be with each

  223. other for eternity. We we want to

  224. minister to one another in light of that

  225. time.

  226. So all these are values of this chapter

  227. and many many more things that could be

  228. said.

  229. So

  230. um I challenge you to spend a lot of

  231. time in 1 Corinthians 15 1-58.

  232. Anything you don't understand, mark it

  233. down.

  234. Read it till you understand it.

  235. You don't understand it, read it again.

  236. Pray, Lord, help me to get what this is

  237. saying.

  238. and read it again. Read it again until

  239. you think you got it. And if you're have

  240. questions, come to me and maybe I can

  241. help you, maybe I can't. But the point

  242. is this is important stuff.

  243. And this practical value is very very

  244. important.

  245. Uh unfortunately I have an iPhone. I'm

  246. sometimes wish they'd never been

  247. invented.

  248. But the thing with iPhones, if you don't

  249. plug them in, they don't work.

  250. They lose power.

  251. And everybody in this room's had their

  252. iPhone with them, but they've lost power

  253. and the phone won't work.

  254. And before iPhones, we could live

  255. without them. But now we I got to get a

  256. plug. I got to find plugs. We got to

  257. plug it in. An iPhone that's not plugged

  258. in is of absolutely no value

  259. because it needs the electric to make it

  260. work. Now, I'm going to ask you this

  261. about your Christianity. Are you plugged

  262. in?

  263. Are you unplugged?

  264. Is your Christianity is what you believe

  265. changing the way you behave and the way

  266. you act?

  267. And sometimes we're just the battery's

  268. running low. Sometimes we're unplugged.

  269. Not that we've lost our salvation, but

  270. we're not getting benefits from it. And

  271. the the uh

  272. where's the law socket? Well, it's in

  273. the word of God.

  274. It's in time alone with God.

  275. We need connected to the source of

  276. spiritual pl. And if we're unplugged

  277. from that power, we need to regain that

  278. power. And the part of that is chapters

  279. like this. Lord, I need to reconnect

  280. today before I start my day. I don't

  281. want to go out of the house. I want to

  282. be like the Puritans. Before you see the

  283. face of man, see the face of God. I want

  284. to open this book. I want your word to

  285. be working in my life.

  286. And I I have found I have found that

  287. it's very important to start the day

  288. right. If I start it wrong, the rest of

  289. the day doesn't go right. I'm like an

  290. unplugged idol.

  291. The old Puritans said, "See the face of

  292. God before you see the face of man." I

  293. think they were right. Get plugged in.

  294. Make sure you're full power.

  295. And

  296. it's very important. Now, the gospel is

  297. the power of God to salvation according

  298. to the book of Romans. There's power

  299. and there's power and uh we need to plug

  300. into that power and get ready for the

  301. day and not be running on low and so

  302. forth. False views or inadequate views

  303. or less than full concept views of the

  304. resurrection

  305. will leave you unplugged.

  306. It will

  307. because unless we're sure of the next

  308. life

  309. and unless we are totally sure that the

  310. next life for Christians is going to be

  311. a million times better than this life

  312. and that this life is just to prepare us

  313. for the next life. Unless we have that

  314. perspective, we are not plugged in for

  315. that day

  316. and it will not go as well.

  317. And uh our Lord was raised not just for

  318. himself but for to to be the first

  319. fruits of them that sleep and our

  320. resurrection follow his. And so we need

  321. to know about his so that we can be 100%

  322. sure about ours.

  323. So all of these things are extremely

  324. important. I think if you go through the

  325. book of 1 and 2 Corinthians, almost

  326. every problem that these people had

  327. had an antidote in understanding the

  328. resurrection of Jesus and their own

  329. resurrection.

  330. If they would understand who they are in

  331. Christ and who Christ is to them, they

  332. would have been on a different level.

  333. Whether it's the schism and the

  334. quarrels, I'm a Paul. I'm a Silas or

  335. whoever, whatever it was there in 1

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  336. Corinthians chapter 1 and all of that

  337. kind of stuff. All of the stuff going

  338. all the way through are the immorality

  339. they were tolerating, forgetting that

  340. your bodies are the temple of the Holy

  341. Spirit, forgetting that your body's

  342. going to be raised to take care of the

  343. body.

  344. Don't just do anything with this body.

  345. All of that, all those applications and

  346. many more are are

  347. applications that can be made, should be

  348. made on this particular subject.

  349. So

  350. I need to reinform myself.

  351. I need to reinvigorate myself

  352. to see my present life in light of my

  353. future.

  354. Some of you are saying my life's in

  355. pits.

  356. Okay. I'm so far down I have to reach up

  357. to touch bottom. Okay.

  358. And this pro this trial is never going

  359. to end.

  360. Okay,

  361. that you're talking about this life so

  362. it doesn't end. So you have it for the

  363. rest of your life.

  364. It's not the next life. And this life is

  365. not the next life.

  366. And so you can accept things that are

  367. hard,

  368. things that you didn't plan on, the very

  369. things that you wish didn't happen

  370. happen. And they are and you can't get

  371. rid of them. You're like Job. Yeah. But

  372. Job learned about what? The

  373. resurrection, his own and his redeemers.

  374. And that brought him through. If you

  375. study the book of Job, and we've taught

  376. Job several times in this church when he

  377. said, "I know my redeemer lives, and at

  378. the latter day he'll stand on the earth,

  379. and I'll see him, and and and in my

  380. flesh I'll see God." There's a change in

  381. Job right there. There's a change in

  382. thought. There's a change in tone.

  383. He wasn't all there, but he was getting

  384. there.

  385. So, very important stuff.

  386. Now, in 1 Corinthians 15, the timing of

  387. New Testament events is very, very

  388. important.

  389. Very important. So, let's look at 1

  390. Corinthians 15. I want to read the first

  391. part, and I think we know much of this,

  392. so bear with us if you know it.

  393. Paul said, "Moreover, brethren,

  394. I declare to you the gospel which I

  395. preached to you, which also you've

  396. received and in which you stand." He's

  397. taking them back five years. But when he

  398. came into Corinth in 51 AD,

  399. that's an irrefutable date, by the way.

  400. He came in 51D. We all know that. Told

  401. you why it is in other messages.

  402. other dates in the scholars use this

  403. date to pick other dates because we know

  404. this one's true.

  405. You read the book of Acts, there's the

  406. date and you know,

  407. but anyway, we're now five years later.

  408. So, these people got saved under Paul's

  409. ministry. You see it recorded in Acts

  410. 18. They've been Christians for five

  411. years.

  412. And so Paul is bringing them back to

  413. what he said five years before.

  414. He says, "Moreover, brethren, I declare

  415. to you the gospel which I preached to

  416. you, which you have received. You have

  417. believed the gospel. You have received

  418. the gospel. You've repented and believed

  419. the gospel and in which you stand." This

  420. is what gives you strength.

  421. Now the problem was

  422. after Paul left

  423. they started listening to other people

  424. and what were other people influencing

  425. them on. We know that if you've been in

  426. this church other people came in and

  427. said and this was according to Greek

  428. philosophy they were mixing Christianity

  429. with Greek or philosophical

  430. concepts. what what was happening. There

  431. were people in the church that were

  432. saying, "Yes, Jesus arose from the dead.

  433. The Messiah did. The son of God did, but

  434. we won't."

  435. No one was denying Jesus's resurrection,

  436. but they were denying the resurrection

  437. of everybody else.

  438. That's the error that Paul is

  439. confronting in this chapter.

  440. And if you go to Acts 17, people laughed

  441. at Paul because he preached Jesus in the

  442. resurrection. Greek philosophy said

  443. basically resurrection is undesirable

  444. and impossible.

  445. They believed in some kind of life after

  446. death as a spirit being but not anything

  447. like resurrection.

  448. So that's the picture here in this

  449. section and that's the background.

  450. So Paul's correcting an error in

  451. theology that has been uh percolating in

  452. that church and it was affecting the way

  453. they lived.

  454. So again, they weren't denying Jesus was

  455. resurrected. If they did, they would

  456. have died to gospel and wouldn't be

  457. saved. They're denying, yes, he was

  458. resurrected, but he's the Messiah. He's

  459. the son of God, but we won't be ever.

  460. We'll live. We'll live after life, after

  461. death, but we won't be resurrected.

  462. So, they were mixing Greek philosophy

  463. and the Bible. People do that today

  464. everywhere.

  465. They try to combine human thinking with

  466. God's word and it gets all mixed up.

  467. And I did that as a young person. I know

  468. how that goes. Did that for a while. And

  469. sometimes we still do things like that.

  470. >> [clears throat]

  471. >> So anyway, Paul said, Paul's trying to

  472. regain in their minds and hearts the

  473. truth that not only Jesus rose from the

  474. dead, but is just as impossible for you

  475. to come out of the grave as it was for

  476. him because you're connected with him.

  477. Your res your physical resurrection is

  478. sure, Christian.

  479. And so he says

  480. in verse two, "By which you're saved, if

  481. you keep in memory what I preached to

  482. you, unless you believed in vain. For I

  483. delivered unto you first of all that

  484. which I also received that Christ died

  485. for our sins according to the

  486. scriptures." That's Old Testament

  487. scriptures that predicted not only the

  488. death but the vicarious death of the

  489. Messiah and his resurrection.

  490. and that he was buried and that he rose

  491. again the third day according to the

  492. scriptures.

  493. So he points to the fulfillment of Old

  494. Testament prophecies like Psalm 22,

  495. Psalm 16, Isaiah 53 and many others that

  496. predict the death, burial, and

  497. resurrection of the Messiah. And that he

  498. was seen of Cphus, that's another name

  499. for Peter. And then of 12 and after that

  500. he was seen above 500 brethren at once.

  501. That's kind of important

  502. of whom the greater part remain to the

  503. present time but some are fallen asleep.

  504. Now what's the present time when he's

  505. writing that? 56 AD.

  506. She's about 25 26 years after the death

  507. of Christ.

  508. body following me.

  509. So it's about 25 26 years after Jesus

  510. died and rose again. And so 500 people

  511. saw him at once at the same time. So in

  512. those in those 25 26 years a lot of them

  513. died but a lot of them were still here

  514. living witnesses.

  515. After that he was seen of James. That's

  516. the halfb brotherther of Jesus. then of

  517. all the apostles. And last of all, he

  518. was seen of me also as one born out at

  519. due time. I was the last person to see

  520. the risen Lord Jesus Christ. Now, at

  521. that time of writing, he was the last.

  522. John saw him when he wrote the book of

  523. Revelation,

  524. right?

  525. But at this time, Paul was the last.

  526. So when he wrote this,

  527. now what's the practical applications of

  528. all of this? And of course, there's many

  529. more things that are said here. Well,

  530. let's go back. Let's read the rest of

  531. this section if I can. Verse 9. For I'm

  532. the least of the apostle, not fit to be

  533. called an apostle because I persecuted

  534. the church of God. But for the grace of

  535. God, I am what I am. And his grace which

  536. was bestowed upon me was not in vain.

  537. But I labored more abundantly than they

  538. all. Yet not I, but the grace of God

  539. which was in me. Therefore, whether it

  540. were I or they, we so we preach and so

  541. you believe. Now, that's the beginning

  542. of Paul's

  543. giving a background of uh the

  544. resurrection of Jesus and the history

  545. behind it and the history after it. And

  546. then he goes to work on it. Okay?

  547. But I want you to think about what he's

  548. saying. And some of you know this

  549. chapter, the resurrection of Jesus.

  550. When

  551. here's our first question. When did the

  552. Christians first believe that?

  553. Now we know

  554. Easter, Easter morning, Easter

  555. afternoon, Easter evening, right?

  556. But when can we prove that?

  557. Can we prove that Christians believe

  558. that right away? Or was it just people

  559. writing books? Somebody decide, I'll

  560. write this book, this gospel, and I'll

  561. make it up. And years later, they

  562. imposed it on everybody.

  563. There's a very interesting concept that

  564. has gone on in history. liberals and

  565. unbelieving scholars when they study the

  566. Bible, they almost always, in fact, I

  567. think it's almost always late

  568. books of the Bible rather than early

  569. date. They they they just love the late

  570. date stuff except the book of

  571. Revelation, that one, they early date.

  572. There's reasons for all of that.

  573. Behind that date, there's

  574. presuppositions and all that kind of

  575. stuff.

  576. But uh when did people start believing

  577. the resurrection? The answer of 1

  578. Corinthians 15 is right away.

  579. There's no big gap where somebody

  580. invented it.

  581. It happened right away. In fact, that's

  582. what the gospels teach. It's it's it but

  583. it's it's very very early. And that's

  584. what First Corinthians teaches. And the

  585. amazing thing is that first Corinthians

  586. was written before the four gospels.

  587. You said that that didn't make any

  588. sense. Well, actually the four gospels

  589. were written after many of Paul's

  590. epistles. First, 2 Thessalonians, 1

  591. Corinthians,

  592. uh pro maybe even Galatians were written

  593. before the epistles.

  594. So, but this is interesting if you do

  595. the chronology on it and study the dates

  596. of the different books.

  597. So, the resurrection of Jesus, when did

  598. it begin to be believed? The answer is

  599. right away. That's what first

  600. Corinthians 15 is teaching. And that is

  601. what modern scholarship even unbelieving

  602. knowledgeable

  603. modern scholarship

  604. has come to.

  605. This is a very interesting thing.

  606. So the resurrection of Jesus, when did

  607. it happen? And we'll find the answer in

  608. this chapter right away. Well, I'll get

  609. back to that. The reality of Paul's

  610. conversion to Christianity. Was that

  611. early or late?

  612. Early.

  613. Probably about three years after the

  614. church began at Pentecost.

  615. It was early rather than late. When did

  616. the church begin believing? Early rather

  617. than late. When did Paul begin get

  618. saved? Early rather than late. When did

  619. they recognize the deity of Christ?

  620. Early or late? Matthew 16. You're the

  621. Christ, the son of the living God. We

  622. know who you are. Who do men say that I

  623. am? Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. Who do

  624. you say that I am? You're the Christ,

  625. the son of the living God.

  626. Okay, Peter, you answered that one.

  627. Well,

  628. A+

  629. the recognition of the daily

  630. the deity of Christ was early.

  631. That happened even before he died

  632. and it certainly happened after he was

  633. resurrected. Thomas said, "My Lord and

  634. my God."

  635. The rapture of the church, early or

  636. late? I'm not going to get into that

  637. one. That's a that's a people people

  638. fight over that. But it is a question,

  639. right? Does it happen before the

  640. tribulation, the middle of the

  641. tribulation, at the end of the

  642. tribulation? Are you preerttrib mid uh

  643. mid-trip post-trip or pre-wrath or many

  644. other things that people think about?

  645. Uh that is an issue. The timing issue is

  646. an issue.

  647. But the relationship of the books of the

  648. Bible to the event historical events

  649. they describe that is a issue

  650. early or late. Obviously the earlier a

  651. book is written the more accurate it can

  652. be.

  653. Uh, I'm pretty sure

  654. that President Grant when he wrote about

  655. the Civil War and he wrote a great book

  656. on that. I have not read it, but

  657. everybody says great.

  658. He was dying of throat cancer because he

  659. smoked all those cigars all those years.

  660. And he decided, I I got to provide for

  661. my family. So, he wrote this great book

  662. on the Civil War. He finished it a

  663. couple of days before he died.

  664. But I'm pretty sure that Grant was a

  665. better authority on the Civil War than

  666. anybody at present time.

  667. He was there.

  668. And so the relationship of the books of

  669. the Bible to the events they described

  670. all in all early is good. Late or not

  671. early is not good or might even be bad.

  672. So when did the when did the apostles

  673. begin to believe in the physical

  674. resurrection? Early is better than late

  675. and earlier the better.

  676. There's all kinds of things that in life

  677. early is good and late is bad. Sometimes

  678. it's late is bad and early is good. How

  679. about having a baby?

  680. Early is not always good.

  681. I was seven months old and I was four

  682. pounds. That wasn't good. They had to

  683. force feed me. Nobody would believe that

  684. today because nobody force-feeds me

  685. today. I take care of that.

  686. So I was four pounds when I when I was

  687. born in 1949.

  688. And so I was two months early.

  689. That was not good. Nine months is

  690. better, but too early can be bad. too

  691. late can be bad, right? There's a

  692. window.

  693. And so, it's very important if you're

  694. staining your deck, uh, we got we had

  695. some steps on our deck redone, you don't

  696. you don't stain it right away. You let

  697. let the wood dry out for 6 months or

  698. whatever it is. And so, early is bad

  699. that time. So in biblical things, it's

  700. important to to u

  701. realize early is usually good. Early in

  702. the sense that things happen and the

  703. people are there that are describing

  704. those things

  705. on your credit score. If you pay your

  706. bills late, are they going to consider

  707. that a good thing?

  708. You pay it early. Yeah, that helps,

  709. doesn't it? Or on time. So, there is a

  710. time for every purpose under heaven.

  711. Now, the Apostle Paul is establishing a

  712. continuity and connection of witnesses

  713. to a very important event, witnesses to

  714. the resurrection.

  715. And he's basically saying that these

  716. ancient biblical prophecies uh uh in the

  717. Old Testament predicted it before the

  718. apostles experienced it. There's

  719. multiple witnesses. There's credible

  720. witnesses. Uh there's personal

  721. witnesses. And he says, "I'm one of

  722. them. I'm not just writing about

  723. something that others saw. I saw him

  724. myself." And he describes it three times

  725. in the book of Acts where the risen Lord

  726. Jesus and ascended Lord Jesus appeared

  727. to him.

  728. So

  729. don't let anybody tell you

  730. that the prophecies are after the event.

  731. Somebody's making them up and just

  732. pretending they were prophesied.

  733. That's called Xeventu after the event.

  734. That's easy to do. Make a prophecy.

  735. Uh the prophecies in Isaiah, the

  736. prophecies in Psalms 22, Isaiah 53,

  737. hundreds of years before the event.

  738. And only God can tell the future.

  739. So only God can predict the future.

  740. And so before the event is good.

  741. Eyewitness testimony is important and

  742. Paul's talking about that when it comes

  743. to the resurrection

  744. also saw him other people saw him his

  745. half brother saw him and actually began

  746. changed his whole position said yeah you

  747. know my brother is God

  748. my older brother is God I accept that

  749. and so important stuff

  750. um I want I want to put this in

  751. perspective a little bit. We just had a

  752. flood in Athens. Some of you that are

  753. new to Athens, wasn't that an

  754. interesting experience?

  755. Did you wonder,

  756. did I come to the right place?

  757. And you know, that water coming down

  758. Richland Avenue, I want to say we I've

  759. lived here 50ome years and it doesn't do

  760. that all the time.

  761. But you know, in the in the mid60s, I

  762. came here

  763. for the first time

  764. to check out Ohio University

  765. because I was planning to come the next

  766. fall.

  767. Guess what I saw?

  768. I saw the West Green

  769. totally flooded.

  770. And you know how those buildings are

  771. above the ground and then there's people

  772. park cars under them on the West Green,

  773. the brick buildings. I saw cars with

  774. water up to their top of the car.

  775. I saw students diving into the water.

  776. Who would want to dive into flood water?

  777. I don't know.

  778. I saw that with my own eyes

  779. because the river wasn't diverted yet.

  780. The river, the old river used to flow

  781. right where

  782. uh Baker Center is now. That would be

  783. right in the middle of the river in the

  784. old days. You old-timers know that.

  785. And so it the West Green was flooded

  786. and I remember that some cars were about

  787. half submerged.

  788. And I know Len and Tanya, you were

  789. probably here then. Mick and Kathy were.

  790. John Swain, if you weren't here, you

  791. knew knew people that were. You were up

  792. at Columbus probably.

  793. And I remember that. And I forget a lot

  794. of stuff.

  795. I forget all kinds of things. But I

  796. remember that. That was impressive.

  797. Something I didn't expect. I'm coming

  798. here to college.

  799. Now they done a lot of work. They moved

  800. the river and c army corps of engineers

  801. moved everything. And so it' have been a

  802. lot worse the last few weeks if they

  803. hadn't have done what they did.

  804. So, but I I remember that I'm an

  805. eyewitness

  806. and I'm still here to tell you

  807. and so are other people here in this

  808. church that collaborate what I'm saying.

  809. If you don't believe what I'm saying, go

  810. into the mall that hardly anybody goes

  811. to anymore and look at those pictures on

  812. the wall. You'll see some of them.

  813. So, all of this is kind of interesting.

  814. And when Paul was writing Corinthians,

  815. remember Corenth is in Greece

  816. and there were Christians in Greece that

  817. Paul had led to the Lord in 51 AD, 21

  818. years after Jesus died and rose again.

  819. And now it's five years later.

  820. Just like there are people in Athens

  821. that remember what happened back in the

  822. 19 mid60s about the flood. There's all

  823. kinds of people walking around. They're

  824. baldheaded. They're gayheaded, but

  825. they're still there.

  826. And so Corinthians was written when

  827. others over 250 at least who had seen

  828. him were still living.

  829. This is this is important as to the

  830. validity

  831. of Corinthians

  832. as well as of the resurrection.

  833. So I remember very well my impression of

  834. the West Green of Athens and later I

  835. lived in the combo center. I was one of

  836. the I was the first class freshman that

  837. lived in the combo center.

  838. It was right in there with the flood. It

  839. was up high, but it was there.

  840. I remember that stuff.

  841. The people who saw Jesus remembered.

  842. So, you have living people in churches

  843. all over uh Israel, all over the ancient

  844. world. And just like I remember the west

  845. green of Athens looked like Venice,

  846. they remembered the resurrection

  847. and they can collaborate

  848. and the local churches in Jerusalem.

  849. There was thousands of people in those

  850. churches

  851. and could collaborate.

  852. As Paul said,

  853. this thing wasn't done in a corner.

  854. This was publicly done.

  855. And do you remember and let me turn to

  856. turn to this just for if you will bear

  857. with me. Hold your place in 1

  858. Corinthians and look at Acts chapter 10

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  859. if you would. Some of you may have seen

  860. this and noticed it. Some of you may not

  861. have. You remember when Paul went to

  862. Cornelius's house, a very famous

  863. uh point in history where

  864. Jewish the Apostle Paul witnessed to

  865. gentle gentile people, a gentile

  866. centurion and all these other Gentiles

  867. in his house.

  868. I I said Paul, I meant Peter. I'm sorry.

  869. Acts 10:34,

    Acts 10:34

  870. he Peter's there. Everybody sitting

  871. there waiting. Then Peter opened his

  872. mouth and said of a truth I perceive.

  873. 10:34 of Acts. God's no respector of

  874. persons. First time Peter ever preached

  875. to Gentiles.

  876. He preached to pro Jewish proelites from

  877. all over the world in Pentecost. First

  878. time he ever preached to Gentiles.

  879. Never did that before.

  880. But in every nation, he that fears him

  881. and works righteousness is accepted by

  882. him. It took that vision of uh food and

  883. animals coming down from heaven and I

  884. said, 'Lord, I've never eaten Chinese

  885. food.

  886. I've never eaten Italian food. I'm a

  887. good Jew. No, you get the point now.

  888. You're going to go to Gentile home.

  889. You're going to start eating these other

  890. food. The food laws are gone

  891. and I'm accepting Gentiles.

  892. The gospel is going out.

  893. And so Paul is saying in verse 30,

  894. Peter, I'm sorry, getting Peter and Paul

  895. reversed in my mind.

  896. Verse 36, the word which God sent to the

  897. children of Israel, preaching peace by

  898. Jesus Christ, he's Lord of all. That

  899. word I say, you know, he these people

  900. were not totally illiterate as to who

  901. Jesus was and what he did.

  902. Do you think of them that way? They were

  903. Gentiles. They weren't Jews, but they

  904. were living in Cesaria.

  905. They heard about it. And Peter is here

  906. telling I'm not telling you something

  907. you don't know.

  908. Sometimes when we read this, we think

  909. this is the first time they heard any of

  910. it. No, they heard it,

  911. but now they're hearing it where God's

  912. dealing with Cornelius.

  913. And isn't that what we need? When

  914. somebody win, when we win somebody to

  915. the Lord, God's been dealing with them

  916. before you ever start talking to them.

  917. That word I say, you know, which was

  918. published throughout all Judea and began

  919. from Galilee after the baptism of John's

  920. preached, how God anointed Jesus of

  921. Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with

  922. power, who went about doing good,

  923. healing all that were oppressed of the

  924. devil, for God was with him. They knew

  925. all that.

  926. It might have been hearsay.

  927. As Paul said later, this thing wasn't

  928. done in the corner.

  929. And so it wasn't here. It might have

  930. been hearsay, but it was well known even

  931. among unbelievers. And we are witnesses

  932. of all things which he did both in the

  933. land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom

  934. they slew and hanged on a tree. him. God

  935. raised from the dead the third day and

  936. showed him openly, not to all the

  937. people, but to witnesses chosen before

  938. by God, even to us who did eat and drink

  939. with him after he rose from the dead.

  940. And he commanded us, the risen Christ,

  941. to preach to the people, and to testify

  942. that it's he who's ordained by God to be

  943. the judging jud of the judge of the

  944. living and the dead. to him give all the

  945. prophets witness that through his name,

  946. whoever believes in him shall receive

  947. the remission of sins."

  948. Now, Peter wasn't telling them something

  949. they hadn't heard before, but he was

  950. telling them when God had been preparing

  951. them to hear it,

  952. right?

  953. God, we don't we're not alone in the

  954. work of the Lord. We're looking for

  955. people that God's preparing to hear

  956. before we ever meet him or talk to them

  957. because if God doesn't work, we're dead

  958. in the wall.

  959. And so, you know what happened the rest

  960. of them? These people got saved and they

  961. got saved by Paul Peter preaching the

  962. resurrection.

  963. And so, all of this is very precious.

  964. All of this is very good.

  965. So the church at Corinth had a similar

  966. experience in 51 AD.

  967. They were Gentiles. They may have just

  968. been hearing for the first time.

  969. Remember Corinth is a long way from

  970. Judea.

  971. And but they heard and Paul preached and

  972. they believed. And so Paul's going back

  973. and telling them how it was in the

  974. beginning when he was with them. And 5

  975. years have passed. It's now 56 years. Uh

  976. 56 AD.

  977. And

  978. that brings us to this. Go back to 1

  979. Corinthians 15. And some of you have

  980. heard me say this, and I I want to bring

  981. this before I'm done.

  982. Paul in 1 Corinthians 15,

  983. he's writing this in 58 56 AD

  984. and he's quoting

  985. an early creed.

  986. You you may not have heard this. You may

  987. not have thought about this,

  988. but I want you to notice something in

  989. verse three.

  990. I delivered to you first of all that

  991. which I also received that Christ died

  992. for our sins according to the scriptures

  993. that he was buried and rose again the

  994. third day according to the scriptures he

  995. was seen of Cphus and then of the 12

  996. that's an early creed that's that those

  997. verses those verses in verse three four

  998. five

  999. and maybe and six

1000. are weren't written by Paul.

1001. They was they were a creed that people

  1002. were saying

  1003. in churches

1004. before Paul ever got to Corinth.

  1005. Say what?

1006. So how do you know this?

1007. Paul is quoting something earlier than

1008. same some something that happened before

  1009. his own salvation.

1010. There were Christian people around Judea

1011. and Samaria that were reciting verses 3

1012. to7 before he was even saved.

  1013. He's just quoting that.

1014. He's quoting what others were saying

1015. about the resurrection and the

1016. appearances of the Lord to the apostles.

1017. This is an amazing thing. He's quoting

1018. an earlier do document that he's

1019. inserted into this letter to the

  1020. Corinthians.

1021. Now, when I was a boy in the 1950s,

1022. we said the pledge of allegiance.

1023. put her hand on her right hand on her

1024. heart, stood up. Every single school

1025. day, we looked at the flag, we stood up,

1026. take your caps off, put your hand on

1027. your heart, and we recited the pledge of

  1028. allegiance every day.

  1029. Every day.

  1030. That's a 31word pledge.

1031. And we were required to memorize that.

1032. And some of you have done the same

  1033. thing.

1034. But the pledge of allegiance was

  1035. actually written in 1892

1036. by a Baptist minister and a Union Army

  1037. officer

1038. and uh but they started using in schools

1039. and every school did it

1040. and but we were saying it but we weren't

1041. the author of it and we didn't even know

1042. who the author was. But that's something

  1043. everybody said.

1044. Paul was not the author of these

  1045. particular verses,

1046. but he's quoting the verses that

1047. everybody was saying before he was even

  1048. saved.

1049. So think about this a minute. Paul's

1050. writing this when he's writing this he's

1051. writing this in 56 uh he's writing this

  1052. in 56 AD

1053. but he's quoting something that was

  1054. being said

1055. earlier than his writing of first

1056. Corinthians which is one of the first

1057. books in the New Testament to be

  1058. written.

1059. This goes back. This goes way back.

1060. And it's not just Bible believing

  1061. Christians that say it.

  1062. Modern scholarship.

1063. I'm talking about people who are not

1064. Christians who would never be qualified

1065. by because of their unbelief to become a

1066. member of this church because they're

1067. not saved. They don't pretend to be

  1068. saved.

  1069. But they're scholars,

  1070. historians, Greek scholars,

  1071. they know this.

1072. They know this. They know this about 1

  1073. Corinthians uh 15.

1074. And what I'm giving you is the from Dr.

1075. Gary Habermass minimal historical facts

1076. about Jesus. He's got three volumes.

  1077. It's about 3,000 pages and he's working

  1078. on a fourth volume.

1079. guys studied it his whole life. The

1080. resurrection you can see YouTubes from

  1081. uh

1082. and he said this he wrote this for five

1083. decades as Dr. Gary Habbermass, he got

1084. his PhD from Michigan University on

1085. this. For five decades, my contention

1086. has been that at the end of Jesus's

  1087. life, there's a significant body of

1088. evidence and data that specialist

1089. scholars of almost every religion and

1090. philosophical persuasion who publish on

1091. these areas recognize as being

1092. historical. In other words, people don't

1093. believe the Bible said this is history.

1094. This Paul Paul's writing here is real

1095. history. There's no fake in this.

1096. And in their mind, it's beyond debate

1097. how early this is and how reliable it

1098. is. And somewhere he quotes a Buddhist

1099. scholar. This is a Buddhist scholar, not

  1100. a Christian.

  1101. Buddhist tradition differs fundamentally

1102. from that of Christianity. Buddhist

1103. possess nothing that corresponds to the

1104. New Testament. The bulk of the selection

1105. in this book, that's the book about

  1106. Buddhism,

1107. was written about 600 to 900 years after

  1108. the Buddha's death.

1109. Big gap between Buddha's death and they

  1110. said Buddha was saved.

1111. What's this one? This goes clear back to

  1112. the beginning.

  1113. Paul's quoting a creed, something was

1114. read in the churches. And by the way,

1115. the New Testament is full of these.

1116. Now, we normally don't teach on this. We

1117. don't normally think about it. Uh,

1118. Philippians 2:6-11 is an early Christian

    Philippians 2:6–11

  1119. hymn. 2 Timothy 2 11-13, Romans 1:3-4,

    Romans 1:3–4

1120. Romans 10:9. All those are creed

    Romans 10:9

1121. statements or hymn traditions with a

1122. high christologology that precede the

1123. writings of the book therein. Hebrews

    Hebrews 1:3

1124. 1:3. These are fascinating things.

1125. The Jesus seminar is a bunch of

  1126. highulutin, well-educated

1127. with all kinds of they got more degrees

1128. than a thermometer, but they unsaved

1129. people, most of them. But this is what

  1130. they say about 1 Corinthians 15:3-8.

    1 Corinthians 15:3–8

1131. Most members think the components of the

1132. list reported there were found before

  1133. Paul's conversion.

1134. So he's saying other people were saying

1135. this before he Paul even got saved.

1136. And Bartman, who was a professing

  1137. Christian turned atheist and he's a

1138. Greek New Testament scholar, thinks that

1139. the he's he's not writing this because

1140. he believes Jesus really rose from the

1141. dead. But he does believe that the early

  1142. Christians thought he did.

1143. and he said that he thinks that the

1144. earlier apostles could well have passed

1145. on the credle conditions to Paul after

  1146. Paul's conversion. Now, he's an

1147. apostate, but he knows historically you

1148. can't fudge this. He's honest that way.

1149. So, he believes that Paul's quoting

1150. something that churches were saying

1151. before Paul even got saved. And when

1152. Paul visited James in in Jerusalem in

  1153. Galatians 18 1 18 and 20, five or six

1154. years after Jesus's resurrection, they

  1155. shared this with him.

1156. So what I'm saying is these verses in

1157. the early part of of Corinthians predate

1158. uh Paul's conversion and predate the

1159. writing of first Corinthians which makes

1160. it very very very early and therefore

  1161. very very credible.

1162. Now you don't you have to believe more

1163. than that the early Christians believe

1164. Jesus arose from the dead early to be

1165. saved. You have to believe that he rose

  1166. from the dead.

1167. Believing that they believed it won't

1168. save you, but believing that they

1169. believed it helps you see the reality of

1170. it by God's Holy Spirit.

1171. Wait a minute. There's some veracity to

1172. this. There's some credibility to this.

  1173. It's really big.

1174. This is better than anybody. Certainly

1175. better than what the Muslims got.

1176. Certainly better than what the Buddhists

1177. got. Certainly better than what the

1178. Mormons got. Certainly better than what

1179. the Jehovah Witnesses got. This is

1180. something that goes back genuinely goes

  1181. back

1182. and it certainly helps us. And I'm

1183. thankful that this is in the Bible.

1184. The early church believed in the

1185. resurrection. But Paul before Paul was

1186. even saved and he persecuted the church

1187. that he he he Paul mentions that how he

1188. persecuted the church before he was

  1189. saved.

1190. And he hated the resurrection. He hated

1191. that Steven taught it. He hated that the

1192. church taught it. He's trying to stamp

1193. it out until Jesus overwhelmed him on

  1194. the Damascus road.

1195. But they believed it before he did.

  1196. Here's

1197. an atheist biblical scholar. You didn't

1198. know there were such a thing. They're

  1199. all over the place.

1200. I had I had an atheist for Old Testament

1201. at OU. I had a a Bible believer for New

1202. Testament at OU. I'm talking the 1960s.

1203. The Old Testament guy said, "I proved

1204. the Old Testament's not true, so now I'm

1205. going to teach you Marxism."

  1206. No, no thanks.

1207. And he was the sweetest guy. Brought

1208. donuts to the class for everybody. real

  1209. smooer,

  1210. but

1211. he wouldn't call on any Christians to

1212. refute anything he said. You I've had

1213. there f there were several Christians in

1214. the class. We'd have our hand up the

1215. whole period and once he knew we were

  1216. Christians,

1217. no calling on us. He had an agenda.

1218. And so there's people with an agenda and

1219. they don't know the Lord. But at least

1220. they know some things. They know I can't

1221. argue with this. I can't fight with

1222. this. I still don't believe in Christ.

  1223. But this is true.

1224. And so Habermas is quoting this atheist

1225. biblical scholar. I can't even say his

1226. name. He's European. Gird Ludman. and he

1227. said, 'I do not I do insist, however,

1228. that the discovery of preauling

1229. confessional formulas is one of the

1230. great achievements of recent New

  1231. Testament scholarship.

1232. And he's not talking about

1233. fundamentalists. He's not talking about

1234. Bible believers. He's talking about

  1235. these university professors

1236. that got more degrees than a

1237. thermometer, but they study the they

  1238. they say this happened.

  1239. And so they're they're still like

1240. everybody else lost. And yet they know

1241. the chronology of this. This is early

  1242. early early.

1243. So if even skeptical scholars

  1244. acknowledge

1245. uh the earliest teaching of Jesus death

1246. and resurrection o occurred quite soon

1247. after the events of his death and

  1248. resurrection. That's a big deal for

1249. Christians. This is not something people

1250. made up. This is something this is not

  1251. something that people invented.

1252. This is something God did

  1253. and revealed.

1254. So the apostles were almost surely the

1255. source of these verses in verses three

  1256. and following.

1257. Now don't get this mixed up with the

  1258. apostles creed.

1259. We had a whole series in this church

1260. years ago on the different creeds. It's

1261. important for us to know some of the

1262. early creeds of the church, but the

1263. Apostles Creed is misnamed. The earliest

1264. form of the Apostles Creed is 2 century.

1265. And I won't I'm not going to go down

1266. that road, but this is not the Apostles

1267. Creed, but it was believed by the

  1268. Apostles

1269. uh before Paul was even saved. The

1270. Apostles Creed is a pretty good creed,

1271. by the way. It's very brief, but it's

  1272. not inspired.

1273. And all of this doesn't prove the

1274. resurrection of Jesus. But it does prove

1275. that the early Christian church, the

1276. earliest Christians did believe in the

1277. resurrection of Jesus. The people who

1278. were there, who knew him the best,

1279. all were doing what Thomas did. My Lord

  1280. and my God.

  1281. Very important.

  1282. Now,

1283. Acts says Jesus showed himself alive by

1284. many infallible proofs. How can you eat

1285. with somebody for 40 days and deny the

  1286. resurrection?

1287. I don't know if any infallible palable

1288. proof. Now, application to us. Let's

1289. let's just make the application to

  1290. anybody's listening online.

  1291. Are you saved?

1292. Have you have you bought into this old

1293. thing? The Bible was written so long ago

1294. and made many different copies and

1295. nobody knows what really had pissed off.

1296. Have you bought into that kind of stuff?

1297. Guarantee you haven't looked into it.

1298. If you're saying that, I know right away

1299. you have not looked into it.

1300. So, are you saved? Have you You don't

1301. even have to look into it. I got saved

1302. before I ever knew there was anything

1303. like this. But it's good for us to know

1304. and and we we need to take time to God's

1305. word and make serious sustained

1306. reflection on the prophecies and

1307. promises of the Old Testament and on the

1308. writings of the Gospels and on the

1309. credibility and authenticity of what the

  1310. Bible's teaching.

1311. And even the number one enemy of the

  1312. early church

1313. was said by the early church when Paul

1314. got saved, he's preaching the faith he

  1315. once destroyed.

1316. And why Jesus overwhelmed him

  1317. with his resurrection?

1318. Now, you and I have probably never tried

  1319. to destroy Christianity,

1320. but we may not be preaching the faith we

1321. once destroyed, but I'll guarantee you,

1322. we're preaching the faith we once

  1323. ignored.

  1324. We

1325. had a heart, an appetite for everything

  1326. else.

1327. Say to my shame, I had a Bible given to

1328. me by my church and I had it on my desk

1329. when I was at OU.

1330. I bet I didn't open it five times in

  1331. four years.

1332. Closed Bible is not going to do you any

  1333. good.

1334. Uh, I never tried, maybe you never tried

  1335. to destroy Christianity,

1336. but you may not be preaching the faith

1337. you once destroyed, but you could be

1338. preaching the faith you once ignored.

1339. Other things were more important to you.

  1340. You had other priorities,

  1341. other interests.

1342. And local churches are sometimes

1343. mixtures of good and bad. Now, this is

1344. the other thing from First Corinthians.

1345. They believed in the resurrection, but

1346. they didn't believe in their own

1347. resurrection. They're mixed up. That

1348. kind of church is dangerous.

1349. That kind of church is dangerous.

  1350. Uh,

1351. rat poison is only 5% in a bunch of

  1352. cornmeal.

1353. You got a lot of cornmeal.

1354. You got that poison in there.

1355. And so may God help us to

1356. shut off all the things that have kept

1357. us back. We need to know this book. We

1358. need to fall in love with this book.

  1359. We're not worshiping the Bible. We're

1360. worshiping the one the Bible tells us

  1361. about.

1362. But we let that book speak to us. We let

1363. that book change our life. We let that

1364. book tell us about things that we need

  1365. to know.

1366. I'm I'm two minutes over. Bear with me.

  1367. I'm almost done.

1368. When I first came here, there was

1369. already a Bible class going on in Athens

1370. high school. That might really shock

  1371. you.

1372. But one of our elders, Mike Dunn,

1373. who was a history, I believe it was

1374. history he taught. He was a golf coach

1375. at Athens High School. He was an elder

1376. in this church. And he started that

1377. Bible class. And we'd get reports from

  1378. that Bible class.

1379. That Bible class lasted six years in

1380. Athens High School, kind of under the

1381. radar. You got permission to do it till

1382. one person complained and that killed.

1383. But during those six years,

1384. many young people came to know the Lord.

1385. And some of them were families that were

1386. atheistic. Some of families were

  1387. hostile to Christianity.

1388. If you know about Carol Harbaugh,

1389. you know about Marie Brunk, you know

1390. about Mike Brunk, if you know about um

1391. uh some of these people,

1392. they were at that class, Alan Lewis,

1393. many of those young people are now

1394. serving the Lord on the mission field or

  1395. preaching in local churches

1396. and all over the place. I think Robert

1397. Pal even may have come to them

1398. and God touched their hearts

  1399. because some Christian

  1400. had enough faith

1401. and a vision these young people need to

  1402. hear about Jesus

1403. and I'm going to try to tell them and he

  1404. did.

1405. I just talked to Michael on the phone.

1406. He lives up in Northern Ohio. has been

1407. gone from Athens many years, but we

1408. talked about how wonderful that class

  1409. was.

1410. Well, enough of this for today,

1411. but I hope that this has been a help to

  1412. you. Just get confidence. There's a

1413. credibility here that a lot of people do

  1414. not know.

1415. And some people say, "Oh, that's just

1416. how do we even know Corinthians is

  1417. real?"

1418. Do you realize the Chester Batty

1419. manuscripts have chapter they got all of

1420. Corinthians and all of second

1421. Corinthians? Now there's some gaps in

  1422. it,

1423. but those manuscripts are in Dublin.

1424. I've seen them there at the in a museum

1425. there. They're in the University of

1426. Michigan and a few of them are

1427. scattered. You've got all these New

  1428. Testament manuscripts.

  1429. P46 is dated about 200.

1430. Take that home with you. 200 225.

1431. But people say, "Oh, it's thousands of

1432. years. 2,000 years." No, we got 200

  1433. years max. Maybe 225

  1434. of copies.

1435. And they're they're not the only copies,

1436. but they are really good copies.

1437. So, we know Paul said this and we know

  1438. that Corinthians heard it.

1439. That's not up for debate.

1440. So would you talk to people and they're

  1441. skeptical? Use Corinthians.

  1442. It's a good thing to use.

1443. God's put it here. Use it.

  1444. Our Lord Jesus

1445. is said to raise the dead according to

1446. the scriptures. And he he was raised

1447. from the dead according to the

1448. scriptures. And 1 Corinthians is

1449. scripture. And thank God for its

1450. preservation as well as many other books

1451. of the Bible that are clearly preserved.

  1452. I'm not saying sometimes copious didn't

1453. air or sometimes errors and we know all

1454. that. But uh there's enough copies to

1455. check them against each other. We are

1456. very sure of some of these things.

1457. If you don't know the Lord as your

1458. savior, maybe God maybe maybe I hope you

1459. got shook up a little bit. I didn't know

  1460. that. I didn't know that.

  1461. I hope I I I hope I p the bubble by

1462. God's grace on your um

1463. on your invisible shield that you built

1464. up against the penetration of the gospel

1465. to your heart. Let it penetrate.

1466. Let it impact you. You don't have to

1467. know everything. You just have to know

1468. God loves me. Jesus died for me. There's

1469. a credible record of that event. It goes

1470. way back to the people who were there.

  1471. It's not a fantasy. It's not a fiction.

1472. It's real. Now, the whole inspiration of

1473. the Bible, inherency of the Bible,

  1474. credibility to Bible, that's a whole

1475. other issue. But this is

1476. this is very important to know. We don't

1477. have to be ashamed at all. Now, if you

1478. forget all these things I've said today

1479. and you just remember it's the word of

1480. God. I'm going to give people the word.

  1481. That's that's okay.

1482. You had to be a big scholar and win all

1483. the arguments to win somebody to Jesus.

1484. You can win the argument, lose the

  1485. person.

1486. Trust the word to do its work

1487. and it will work. But we have to be sure

1488. oursel to be able to minister to others.

1489. Father, we thank you for the time we

1490. spent today. challenge us with these

1491. great truths from your word. Forgive us,

1492. Father, for any apathy or lethargy that

1493. we might have. May we be students of

1494. scripture. May we uh learn your word and

1495. learn what it says. May our theology be

1496. practical and our practice be

1497. theological. May we be people who don't

1498. just want to know things, but want to

1499. minister to others in need and use us

1500. for Jesus' sake. We pray. And if there's

1501. anyone here that's not yet a Christian,

1502. may they be born again through the word

  1503. of God

  1504. today.

1505. May they stop trusting their wisdom,

1506. stop trusting their merit, begin

1507. trusting Christ who died for them and

  1508. rose again. Amen.

  1509. >> Let's stand. Turn to page 472. [singing]

1510. Lord, as we go from [music] this place,

  1511. loving you [singing] more,

  1512. trusting [music] you more.
