  1. I believe what we need to do. And so

  2. instead of just referencing it, I

  3. decided to move through it. So please

  4. turn to Jeremiah 32.

  5. This is quite a long chapter.

  6. Well, I'll read through it once and then

  7. we'll get started just so we know where

  8. we are.

  9. Jeremiah chapter 32. And in your mind,

    Jeremiah 32 chapter mention

  10. remind yourself of chapter 31 and how

  11. significant that chapter is that this

  12. chapter is the next one in the book has

  13. been placed beside it. There certainly

  14. is a reason for that. And so,

  15. uh, let's get started.

  16. the word that came to Jeremiah from the

  17. Lord in the 10th year of Zedekiah, king

  18. of Judah, which was the 18th year of

  19. Nebuchadnezzar.

  20. For then the king of Babylon's army

  21. besieged Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the

  22. prophet was shut up in the court of the

  23. prison which was in the king of Judah's

  24. house. For Zedekiah, king of Judah, had

  25. shut him up, saying, "Why dust thou

  26. prophesy and say, Thus says the Lord,

  27. behold, I'll give this city into the

  28. hand of the king of Babylon, and he'll

  29. take it." And Zedekiah, king of Judah,

  30. shall not escape out of the hand of the

  31. Calaldanss. In other words, a king is

  32. complaining. You're telling him, I'm

  33. going to be defeated and take taken to

  34. Babylon. Why are you saying all this

  35. stuff?

  36. And and uh in verse four, and Zedekiah,

  37. king of Judah, shall not escape the hand

  38. of the Calaldanss, but shall surely be

  39. delivered into the hand of the king of

  40. Babylon, and shall speak with him

  41. mouthto mouth, and his eyes shall behold

  42. his eyes.

  43. So basically what he's complaining

  44. about, you're not just telling about

  45. some of the people going there. You're

  46. ask you're just you're prophesying that

  47. I'm gone that they're going to take me

  48. off my throne and I will be over there.

  49. And of course that's exactly what will

  50. happen.

  51. But anyway, he's complaining. And he

  52. shall lead Zedekiah to Babylon, and

  53. there shall he be until I visit him,

  54. says the Lord. Though you fight with the

  55. Calaldanss,

  56. ye shall not prosper. The Calaldanss and

  57. the Babylonians are the same crowd. And

  58. Jeremiah said, "The word of the Lord

  59. came unto me, saying, Behold, Hanamel,

  60. the son of Shalom, thine uncle, shall

  61. come unto thee, saying, By my field that

  62. is in Anithoth,

  63. for the right of redemption is thine to

  64. buy it."

  65. Very important.

  66. This Hanameal is Jeremiah's cousin

  67. and he owns some property in Jeremiah's

  68. hometown, Anathon.

  69. And right now he's saying, I want you to

  70. redeem my field. I want you to be the

  71. redeemer of my field. Kind of like the

  72. book of Ruth, right? Where we studied

  73. that. And he had the right of redemption

  74. is yours. Buy it. uh be a Boaz, don't be

  75. a such a one.

  76. And by the field

  77. and

  78. so Hannel, my uncle's son, came to me in

  79. the court of the prison, according to

  80. the word of the Lord, and said to me,

  81. "By my field, I pray thee,

  82. that is in Anithoth, which is in the

  83. country of Benjamin, for the right of

  84. inheritance is thine, and the redemption

  85. is thine. Buy it for yourself.

  86. Now, think about what's happening here.

  87. Jeremiah is in prison. What's he going

  88. to do with the field?

  89. What's a man in prison

  90. going to do with the field? Where's he

  91. going to get the money to buy a field?

  92. He's been imprisoned and possibly going

  93. to be martyed

  94. uh by the king. if the Babylonians don't

  95. get him, the king might. And so Hannel

  96. must have been extremely

  97. uh desperate to come to him and

  98. give him this

  99. uh request.

  100. Then verse eight,

  101. then I knew

  102. that this was the Lord, word of the

  103. Lord.

  104. Jeremiah immediately recognized

  105. in this particular weird providence

  106. the will of the Lord.

  107. Now, why would he do that?

  108. How come he did that?

  109. Well, remember God had asked him to do

  110. many bizarre things.

  111. This was like, oh, another one.

  112. So, God had asked him over a period of

  113. 40 years to do all kinds of things that

  114. were difficult. Remember the yoke? Wear

  115. that around. Remember the uh wearing

  116. your underwear on the outside of your

  117. robes, wearing the linen underwear that

  118. got spoiled and the Euphrates River.

  119. Remember the uh the potter's house and

  120. breaking the pottery? All kinds of stuff

  121. were visual aids to get messages across.

  122. And so basically Jeremiah says, "Here we

  123. go again. This is just so bizarre, so

  124. off-the-wall, so out of uh out of uh the

  125. blue

  126. that he realized this is not just one of

  127. those family things.

  128. This is of God.

  129. God has a purpose in here besides

  130. my family dynamics.

  131. I hope we learn to see the hand of God

  132. in the glove of our history.

  133. Whether it's our family, our church, our

  134. ministries,

  135. our nation,

  136. Jeremiah came to a conclusion. And as he

  137. came to the conclusion before God said

  138. anything

  139. perfectly,

  140. it's interesting, isn't it?

  141. God has different ways of showing us his

  142. will.

  143. And so that that little phrase to me is

  144. is is a very interesting one.

  145. Jeremiah has said nothing.

  146. His cousin has said everything. The

  147. timing of it is off the wall

  148. because guess what?

  149. The Babylonian armies are building

  150. ramparts against the gates of the city

  151. of Jerusalem.

  152. at that moment

  153. and they're going to besiege Jerusalem

  154. for a year. But their Babylonians are

  155. already there.

  156. Who'd buy property when it's in the and

  157. Anithoth is three miles from Jerusalem.

  158. Anithoth

  159. is in the hands of the Babylonians.

  160. And Jeremiah has predicted already by

  161. God that the Babylonians are coming and

  162. they're going to take away your

  163. everybody and you're all going to

  164. Babylon.

  165. So what's Jeremiah need property in

  166. Jerusalem if the Babylonians have

  167. control over it? And if the whole

  168. nation's going to go to Babylon,

  169. possibly him.

  170. Now we know he later ended up in Egypt,

  171. not in Babylon. and he stay and and and

  172. there that's a whole but he didn't know

  173. that this point.

  174. So the the the experience of Jeremiah

  175. with God's

  176. providence in his life, he knew this is

  177. not a coincidence.

  178. This is not just a bizarre family person

  179. asking unreasonable things because

  180. that's the kind of person they are.

  181. The news of the Lord.

  182. Remember the men of Anithoth had us

  183. earlier were going to try to kill him

  184. early in his ministry.

  185. So why would you want to buy property in

  186. the town of people that want to try to

  187. kill you?

  188. He didn't do this for himself.

  189. He's got another sermon illustration

  190. going on that he has to fulfill

  191. and he knows it immediately.

  192. So may we see the hand of God. Now we

  193. we're not inspired prophets and we got

  194. to be careful here. We don't we can jump

  195. to conclusions, right? We can jump to

  196. conclusions. this is God's will because

  197. this happened or that happened and so

  198. forth

  199. and uh but it's interesting as we read

  200. this.

  201. So Hannamel, my uncle's son, verse 8,

  202. came to me in the court of the prison,

  203. according to the word of the Lord, and

  204. said to me, "By my field, I pray thee,

  205. that is in Anithoth, which is in the

  206. country of Benjamin, for the right of

  207. inheritance is thine, and the redemption

  208. is thine, and buy it for yourself." Then

  209. I knew it was the word of the Lord. And

  210. I want

  211. I bought it.

  212. Now, if you're in prison, you don't when

  213. you're in prison, you don't.

  214. It's not like you get the kind of things

  215. that American prisons supply.

  216. For instance, even when Paul was in

  217. prison in Rome, even at that time, if

  218. you were in prison and you didn't have a

  219. family, they didn't feed you.

  220. you had to depend on friends and family

  221. to feed you.

  222. And I'm not sure what the Babylonian

  223. policy was, but I know one thing. If I'm

  224. in prison and I can't work and I've got

  225. I'm I I'm obviously under persecution,

  226. I don't want to waste my shekels on a

  227. field that I can't use.

  228. That doesn't seem like the right time

  229. for that investment, right?

  230. It seems like the liquid asset of the

  231. coins, the shekels would be better than

  232. a piece of ground under Babylonian

  233. authority, especially when everybody's

  234. going to be taken into exile. And what's

  235. the land worth if there's nobody around

  236. it?

  237. But he knew that this was the word of

  238. the Lord.

  239. When you know God wants you to do

  240. something, you better do it.

  241. And God's

  242. working in our life providentially with

  243. those kind of convictions is a rare

  244. thing. It's not always

  245. something that is so powerful. Sometimes

  246. it is.

  247. And

  248. when I graduated from Ohio University, I

  249. knew that I needed to go back to New

  250. Philadelphia

  251. and start a Bible class for my family.

  252. That was extremely strong.

  253. I had other things that people offered

  254. for me to do that I wanted to do,

  255. but I turned them down. And I didn't

  256. stay here either.

  257. because I knew that I needed to be up

  258. there. That was an overpowering

  259. conviction

  260. and I believed that it was something

  261. like Jeremiah had. So he went ahead with

  262. it and I bought the field of Hanameal,

  263. my uncle's son that was in Anithal, and

  264. weighed him the money, even 17 shekels

  265. of silver.

  266. And I signed the deed and sealed it,

  267. took witnesses, and weighed him the

  268. money in the balances. So I took the

  269. deed of the purchase both which was

  270. sealed according to the law and custom

  271. that was open.

  272. And I gave the deed of purchase to Baroo

  273. the son of Mariah. That's the first time

  274. he's mentioned in the book. We'll see

  275. him later. the son of Messiah in the

  276. sight of Hannamel, my uncle's son, and

  277. in the presence of witnesses and signed

  278. the deed of the purchase

  279. before all the Jews that sat in the

  280. court of the prison. So, they're not

  281. sitting in the gate like uh uh Boaz is

  282. with such a one. They're sitting in the

  283. court of the prison, but there are

  284. witnesses to this purchase.

  285. And I charged Baruk before them, saying,

  286. "Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of

  287. Israel, take these deeds, this deed of

  288. purchase, which is sealed, and this deed

  289. which is open, and put them in earn

  290. vessels, that they may continue many

  291. days." And that's exactly what they did.

  292. The same thing with the Dead Sea

  293. Scrolls, right? Same exact thing.

  294. And so they put them in those and they

  295. sealed sealed them up and it's for the

  296. future, right? Is Jeremiah going to ever

  297. open up that jar? No.

  298. He's already been in the ministry 40

  299. years. He's not a young man anymore.

  300. Probably 53, 54, 56, I don't know, maybe

  301. 60.

  302. He's already been in the ministry a long

  303. time. The Babylonians are coming.

  304. How long is the captivity going to last?

  305. 70 years. What kind of returns Jeremiah

  306. got to get on this thing?

  307. Ever thought 70 years?

  308. Uh, and if if you had some kind of

  309. purchase to make, maybe it was farmland

  310. or or a house someplace and they said,

  311. "You will clean up if you buy this.

  312. The profit you will get in 70 years will

  313. really make it worthwhile." How many

  314. people in this room would think, "Oh,

  315. that sound like a good deal. I think

  316. I'll do it." Well, if you don't have any

  317. heirs,

  318. why would you do that? You're not going

  319. to be around. I don't think anybody I'm

  320. looking at is going to be here in 70

  321. years. We either be in heaven with the

  322. Lord because he comes or we'll be in

  323. heaven with the Lord because we go to

  324. him.

  325. And Jeremiah,

  326. he he knew it was going to be 70 years

  327. before the Jews came back. So, he's not

  328. coming back even if he goes to Babylon.

  329. Now, he ended up not going to Babylon.

  330. He went to Egypt, but it the property

  331. never did him any good.

  332. Except what? He did God's will.

  333. He did God's will.

  334. This is just a fascinating thing. It's a

  335. very interesting thing.

  336. And the fact that he puts the deeds in

  337. the jar is his faith that the Jews are

  338. going to come back to the land. And

  339. those deeds in those jars are going to

  340. be valuable to whoever's going to

  341. examine it later.

  342. And now remember, God commanded Jeremiah

  343. not to bury or have children.

  344. I'm sure you're going to get that point.

  345. What?

  346. >> Who is going to live on paradise?

  347. >> It's got to be other relatives. It won't

  348. be his children or his

  349. >> immediate

  350. >> his immediate relative

  351. or it may go right back to this cousin

  352. family.

  353. You understand what I'm saying? It's not

  354. going to go back to him.

  355. So John,

  356. >> if they found the years later,

  357. >> yeah,

  358. >> the book of Jeremiah would validate what

  359. he did.

  360. >> It sure would. Now, that's that's a good

  361. observation, John. And I believe that

  362. that's exactly the reason God had him do

  363. that

  364. >> and that it would validate what he did.

  365. That's a good one. Okay, let's keep

  366. reading because it's getting it's going

  367. to get hard to even read this chapter.

  368. Now verse 16. Now when I delivered the

  369. deed of the purchased to Baroo the son

  370. of Nariah, I prayed to the Lord saying,

  371. "Have you ever done something, invested

  372. in something? Say, Lord, did I do the

  373. right thing?

  374. Is this really your will?"

  375. And that that's what he's doing. Oh Lord

  376. God, behold you made heaven and earth.

  377. You by your great power and outstretched

  378. arm and there's nothing too hard for

  379. thee. That's a great verse, isn't it?

  380. Nothing too hard for thee. Thou showest

  381. loving kindness and the thousands, and

  382. recompense the iniquity of the fathers

  383. to the bosom of the children after them.

  384. The great and the mighty God, the Lord

  385. of hosts is his name, great in counsel,

  386. mighty in work. Thy hands are open to

  387. all the ways of the sons of men, to give

  388. everyone according to his ways and

  389. according to the fruit of his doings,

  390. who has sent signs and wonders in the

  391. land of Egypt, even to this day. and in

  392. Israel and among other men. And you've

  393. made thee a name as to this day. And you

  394. brought forth thy people Israel out of

  395. the land of Egypt with signs and wonders

  396. and with strong hand and without

  397. stretched arm and with great terror and

  398. have given them, underline this this

  399. land.

  400. He's occupied with the promised land.

  401. You've given them this land. You brought

  402. the whole two million people out of

  403. Jerusalem, out of Egypt. You gave them

  404. this land.

  405. You did swear to their fathers to give

  406. them a land flowing with milk and honey,

  407. and they came in and possessed it. But

  408. they obeyed not thy voice, neither

  409. walked in thy law. They've done nothing

  410. of all that you commanded them to do.

  411. Therefore, you've caused all this evil

  412. to come upon them. That's the whole

  413. Palestinian covenant. If you obey, you

  414. can stay. If you don't, you got to go,

  415. right?

  416. And then he says this, pray. Behold the

  417. siege mounts. There they are. Already

  418. the Babylons are knocking on the gate of

  419. the city. The armies have surrounded it.

  420. Behold the siege mounds. They're come to

  421. this city to take it. And the city is

  422. given to the hand of the Calaldanss that

  423. fight against it because of the sword

  424. and of the famine and of the pestilence.

  425. And what thou has spoken is come to

  426. pass. And behold, you see it.

  427. And all that

  428. is preparatory to this. Lord, did I do

  429. the right thing?

  430. I just spent 17 shekels.

  431. I'm in prison. The Babylonians are

  432. outside. I'm in prison on the inside.

  433. What was this all about, Lord?

  434. You have said to me, oh Lord God, buy

  435. the field with money and take witnesses

  436. for the city is given into the hand of

  437. the Calaldians.

  438. He just saying, Lord, you said it, so I

  439. did it, but I don't understand it. I

  440. need some more light here. I need some

  441. understanding.

  442. And so

  443. he gets it.

  444. And so in verse 27,

  445. verse 26, then came the word of the Lord

  446. to Jeremiah, saying, "Behold, I am the

  447. Lord, the God of all flesh. Is there

  448. anything too hard for me?" One of the

  449. great verses in Jeremiah, right?

  450. Hope you take that one home and meditate

  451. on it. Is there anything

  452. too hard for the Lord? Oh, that person

  453. will never be saved. That church will

  454. never get started. That that that

  455. country will never be open. Is there

  456. anything too hard for the Lord?

  457. Too hard for me. God said, "Therefore,

  458. thus says the Lord, behold, I will."

  459. We're going to we're just going to

  460. remind you what the program is.

  461. Jeremiah, behold, I will give this city

  462. into the hand of the Calaldanss into the

  463. hand of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon,

  464. and he'll take it.

  465. And the Calaldanss that fight against

  466. this city shall come in and set fire to

  467. this city and burn it with the houses

  468. upon whose roofs they've offered incense

  469. to Baal, and poured out drink offerings

  470. unto other gods to provoke me to Israel.

  471. Yes, they're going to take it. they're

  472. going to burn it. And that's exactly

  473. what they did. And they're still finding

  474. places where this was done.

  475. Archaeologists are digging up things

  476. where the burn levels of that fire

  477. that happened u a year after this

  478. prophecy.

  479. And the children of Israel and the

  480. children of Judah have only done evil

  481. before me from their youth. For the

  482. children of Israel have only provoked me

  483. to anger with the work of their hands,

  484. says the Lord. For this city has been to

  485. me a provocation of my anger and of my

  486. fury from the day they build it to this

  487. day

  488. that I should remove it before my face.

  489. Because all the evil of the children of

  490. Israel and the children of Judah, I want

  491. you to underline. We read over that

  492. again. The children of Israel, they

  493. lived in the north, 10 tribes. The

  494. children of Judah, they lived in the

  495. south, two tribes. It wasn't just the

  496. city of Jerusalem in Judah. It was the

  497. whole tribes, a whole bunch of them.

  498. It's a national problem. It's not a city

  499. problem have done to provoke me to

  500. anger. They they their kings, their

  501. princes, their priests, their prophets,

  502. their men of Judah, and the inhabitants

  503. of Jerusalem. And they've turned to me

  504. the back and not the face.

  505. Though I taught them, rising up early

  506. and teaching them, yet they've not

  507. hearkened to receive instruction. For

  508. they set their abominations in the house

  509. which is called by my name to defile it.

  510. What's that? The idols of pagans that

  511. were brought into the Jewish temple. And

  512. they built the high places of Baal,

  513. which are in the valley of the son of

  514. Hinam to cause their sons and their

  515. daughters to pass through the fire to

  516. Malik, which I commanded them not.

  517. Neither came it to my mind that they

  518. should do this abomination

  519. to cause Judah to sin. That ought to

  520. make America quake. We abort babies,

  521. they burn them.

  522. There's a reckoning for such behavior.

  523. And now, therefore, thus says the Lord,

  524. the God of Israel, concerning this city

  525. of which you say, it shall be delivered

  526. into the hand of the king of Babylon, by

  527. the sword, by the famine, and by

  528. pestilence.

  529. Behold, I will gather them out of all

  530. countries. Now, watch. This is worth

  531. underlining if you underline.

  532. Remember I said land. Watch the land.

  533. Now I'm going to gather them. All the

  534. countries, not just Babylon, but all the

  535. countries, not just Judah, but even the

  536. Israelites and northern tribes to which

  537. I've driven them in my anger, in my

  538. fury, and great wrath. And I will bring

  539. them again to this place, and I will

  540. call them to dwell safely.

  541. and they'll be my people and I'll be

  542. their God.

  543. And I'll give them one heart and one way

  544. that they may fear me forever for the

  545. good of them and their children after

  546. them. Now, that one heart that goes back

  547. to chapter 31, doesn't it?

  548. There's going to be a heart transplant,

  549. part of the new covenant.

  550. It's called the new birth.

  551. And I will make an everlasting covenant

  552. with them,

  553. an everlasting covenant with them. I

  554. will not turn away from doing them good,

  555. but I will put my fear in their hearts,

  556. and they shall not depart from me. Yay,

  557. I will rejoice over them in doing them

  558. good. And I'll plant them in this

  559. underline

  560. this land.

  561. Same land they get kicked off of.

  562. They're going to be coming back to the

  563. same land that they were given through

  564. Joshua and then sinned in their own

  565. lives and were taken off of for 70

  566. years. They're coming back this land

  567. assuredly with my whole heart and my

  568. whole soul. For thus says the Lord, as I

  569. brought all this great evil on this

  570. people, so will I bring all the good

  571. that I promised them.

  572. And fields, now this is going back to

  573. Jeremiah buying the property.

  574. and fields shall be bought in this land

  575. of which you say it's desolate without

  576. man or beast. It's given to the hand of

  577. calaldanss. Men shall buy fields for

  578. money and sign deeds and seal them and

  579. take witnesses in the land of Benjamin,

  580. in the places about Jerusalem, in the

  581. cities of Judah, in the cities of the

  582. mountains, in the cities of the Chafala,

  583. and in the cities of the Negab or I will

  584. cause their captivity to return, says

  585. the Lord. You made a long-term

  586. investment, Jeremiah. You won't live

  587. physically to see it, but it's a good

  588. investment.

  589. You did what I told you to do and

  590. there's benefits coming because you did

  591. it. Now, most of us realize we don't

  592. mind making investment for the future if

  593. somebody is going to benefit from it,

  594. right? Especially people we love.

  595. And as you get older, I think you live

  596. more for the people that come after you

  597. than for yourself because you know, I'm

  598. almost out of here. So, and in in our

  599. church, isn't that our mindset? We want

  600. we would love if the Lord would allow it

  601. to have this church continue after we're

  602. gone for Athens and the people of Athens

  603. sake. And that would be our benefit if

  604. it would happen. We would love that. We

  605. don't know that. Nobody knows how long a

  606. church is going to last or not last, but

  607. it's a good prayer to pray. So anyway,

  608. he's talking about

  609. a return to the land. He's talking about

  610. a a resumption of property in the land.

  611. He's talking about the people are

  612. leaving the land, but they're coming

  613. back. And I'm going to give them a new

  614. heart. It's not going to be the same

  615. program. It's going to be an everlasting

  616. covenant, which is the same as the new

  617. covenant. We're not starting over with

  618. the same program that you pe you people

  619. failed at.

  620. I got a new program.

  621. This is all very interesting.

  622. And so, um,

  623. my intention is to focus here on this

  624. particular section tonight

  625. and, uh, think about what's going on.

  626. Think about the Jeremiah is 60 plus

  627. years old probably if you do the math on

  628. it in the book of Jeremiah. You go to

  629. the first part of the book and then

  630. later part of the book and where we are

  631. now. 39 years have gone by since he was

  632. called to the ministry. He was a nahar

  633. and youth which could be anybody from 20

  634. to 30 35 even. And so, you know, he's

  635. not a young man anymore.

  636. And so, the captivity is going to last

  637. 70 years. He knows, I'm not, if I go to

  638. Babylon, I'm not coming back. I'm going

  639. to die there.

  640. He didn't know where he was going at

  641. this point. And, you know, we know in

  642. the rest of the book of Jeremiah, bunch

  643. of people were taken out. He wasn't, but

  644. he was taken to Egypt.

  645. But so, it's just interesting. The city

  646. was destroyed. population was radically

  647. reduced for the next seven decades.

  648. And what happened to Anithon? The

  649. property there? Nothing.

  650. Nothing.

  651. Jeremiah didn't benefit Jeremiah. Didn't

  652. benefit anybody.

  653. Uh, and the whole thing of property that

  654. you buy, whether it's a house or a a a

  655. piece of land, is will this property be

  656. more valuable or less valuable in the

  657. future? Isn't that why you buy stuff? I

  658. mean, stuff like property,

  659. you know, your car is going to

  660. depreciate, but you hope your house

  661. will.

  662. And if they don't tax it too much, they

  663. probably get more out of it in taxes in

  664. your lifetime than you pay for it. But

  665. anyway, the point here is uh

  666. we we want things to go forward where

  667. we've spent our time in our life and we

  668. want the ministry to go forward. We have

  669. no way of knowing whether it will happen

  670. or not. But obviously when the

  671. Babylonians are control of it and the

  672. population is gone, the property is

  673. going to be devaluated the whole time of

  674. the next 70 years.

  675. Not going to be worth nothing.

  676. almost nothing.

  677. So unless he's you're married or have

  678. kids, this isn't a good investment. Oh,

  679. but if you're single and you've got an

  680. eternal God that you're working for and

  681. he sees everything you do and he's

  682. pleased with what you do,

  683. I hope you don't just do things to be

  684. rewarded in this life.

  685. There is a life beyond this life.

  686. And so, yes, there's another visual aid

  687. going on and the visual aids are piling

  688. up because people aren't listening. So,

  689. they need to eye gate and eargate and

  690. piling up. And here we go again.

  691. And what an application here. This is a

  692. real good place as well as other places

  693. in Jeremiah to show that sermons need

  694. illustrations.

  695. People need the eye gate and eargate.

  696. And so sermon illustrations are helpful.

  697. They're not a waste of time.

  698. Now, if they're biblical and helpful,

  699. and if they really add add something

  700. now, just to get up and tell stories to

  701. entertain, that's not preaching. But get

  702. people laughing and and so forth. But an

  703. illustration that illustrates something

  704. is a good thing.

  705. And so

  706. what a fascinating business this is. Now

  707. I told you to watch the word land

  708. or field, however your Bible's

  709. translated.

  710. And the there's so many key verses here.

  711. 37 to 44, I would say, are major key

  712. verses in uh in this chapter. But

  713. there's others. There's key verses back

  714. in 31 where it deals with the term land.

  715. The new covenant and the everlasting

  716. covenant are one and same. We're going

  717. to deal with premill, post mill, and a

  718. mill. But it's very important for us to

  719. understand the new covenant and what

  720. it's all about in the Old Testament and

  721. how it applies to us in the New

  722. Testament.

  723. Now, Christians differ on this. good

  724. Christians. This is not a matter of your

  725. spirituality or salvation. There's some

  726. doctrines you if you don't believe, it's

  727. obvious you're unsaved. But this is one

  728. of those issues where good Christians

  729. have differed.

  730. Charles Spurgeon was not a

  731. dispensationalist. That might shock you.

  732. I've heard see people say he was. He was

  733. dispensation.

  734. But he did write something very

  735. interesting.

  736. Because he believed the Jews were going

  737. back to the land.

  738. Why did Spurgeon believe that?

  739. He believed it because it's in the

  740. Bible.

  741. And he didn't put it together the same

  742. way Darby did or other people of his

  743. time. But this is what Spurgeon wrote.

  744. It's a sermon he gave in June 3rd, 1855.

  745. And Linda found this and shared it with

  746. me.

  747. This is what he said. The hour is

  748. approaching when the tribes shall go up

  749. to their own country when Judea, so long

  750. a balling wilderness, shall once more

  751. blossom like a rose. Now he's writing

  752. 1855.

  753. Think about when that was.

  754. That's before Britain ever thought about

  755. sending the Jews back.

  756. The Balfar that declaration was long

  757. after this.

  758. And he said, "They're going back. The

  759. desert's going to blossom like a rose.

  760. If the temple itself be not restored,

  761. yet Zion Hill shall be raised some

  762. Christian building." You see, we we

  763. believe in a millennial temple. We

  764. believe the throne of David on the

  765. earth. He says, "Well, it might be

  766. something like that, or maybe it'll be a

  767. Christian church or something where

  768. chants of the solemn praise shall be

  769. heard as of the old hymn, Psalms of

  770. David were sung in the tabernacle." And

  771. then he said this, I think we do not

  772. attach sufficient importance to the

  773. restoration of the Jews. That's what he

  774. said.

  775. We do not think enough about it. But

  776. certainly if there's anything promised

  777. in the Bible, it is this.

  778. God's not done with the Jews. Virgin

  779. knew that. So does the devil know?

  780. Listen, you've heard me say this many

  781. times. If God was done with the Jews,

  782. the devil would be done with.

  783. The reason the devil is using Iran and

  784. all these people to attack the Jews and

  785. will use more of them to attack the Jews

  786. and all the Jews have suffered even as

  787. unbelievers and Christ rejectors is

  788. because God's not done with them yet.

  789. That's why the devil's not done with

  790. Why did God

  791. keep attacking Job?

  792. What's God pointed Job out to him? It's

  793. my man.

  794. then like him in the earth and I'm going

  795. to take him out

  796. because I walk to and fro in the earth.

  797. I own everything.

  798. Satan feels very threatened

  799. by the preservation of Jewish people on

  800. this planet.

  801. And he certainly feels threatened by a

  802. return of the Jews to the land. Now, I

  803. know they're there in unbelief. They're

  804. not saved. They're not born again.

  805. That's a fantasy of some people. They

  806. almost make it like they're born again

  807. even though they don't believe in

  808. Christ. But Satan's worried about it.

  809. And in Revelation 12, he's going to be

  810. really worried about it. He's going to

  811. go after him in the tribulation.

  812. But Spurgeon went on said, "I imagine

  813. you cannot read the Bible without seeing

  814. clearly that there is an actual

  815. restoration of the children of Israel.

  816. For when the Jews are restored, you

  817. can't be restored unless you've already

  818. been there.

  819. For when the Jews are restored, the

  820. fullness of the Gentiles shall be

  821. gathered in. And as soon as they return,

  822. then Jesus will come upon Mount Zion

  823. with his ancients gloriously.

  824. And the days of the millennial

  825. millennium shall then dawn. We shall

  826. then know every man to be

  827. each other in each other and a friend in

  828. Christ will rule with universal sway.

  829. Now be careful how you take his words

  830. there. Don't in don't over interpret

  831. them or you'll be making a mistake. But

  832. I'm thankful for what he did say

  833. and I'm thankful for the light he did

  834. have. Of course Spurgeon was a great

  835. Bible preacher.

  836. Hey, so what do we got going on here? We

  837. got just a few minutes. God uh God was

  838. telling Jeremiah and wanting Jeremiah to

  839. do something that everybody could see.

  840. Put your money where your mouth is.

  841. Invest it. Invest in the future of

  842. Israel. And this conf this concentration

  843. on the land and the return to the land

  844. comes right up against the new covenant.

  845. The Jews coming back in the new

  846. covenant.

  847. It's fascinating for me.

  848. And we're going to kind of dive into

  849. this because it's a good place to dive

  850. into it, but not tonight. We're just

  851. going to just make some comments here

  852. before we get to what other people

  853. believe. Uh,

  854. do we believe it ourselves? Do we

  855. believe we can trust God for the final

  856. product? Are we sold on that? We sold on

  857. our message or we do we believe we can

  858. invest financially in it

  859. and all of that.

  860. I hope we are. And uh

  861. I've told this story before, but there

  862. was a man that was preaching the coming

  863. of Jesus, and he even set a date for it.

  864. I don't believe in that at all, but

  865. anyway, this preacher set a date for the

  866. coming of Jesus.

  867. And uh his neighbor was had heard him

  868. preach that. And somebody said, "Do you

  869. believe what he says about the coming of

  870. Jesus at such and such a date?" which

  871. was right around the corner, just a few

  872. years off. He said, "No, I saw him

  873. planting an oak tree last week.

  874. If you're planting an oak tree in your

  875. backyard, you don't really believe your

  876. own message, right?"

  877. There's something really contradictory

  878. there. Uh but God help us. Jeremiah

  879. was consistent with his message and God

  880. blessed him.

  881. And the best way to get people to

  882. believe our message is to invest that

  883. message with our time, with our money,

  884. with our life.

  885. So they know we're really serious about.

  886. And so may God help us to do that. Um,

  887. let your gentleness be known to all men.

  888. The Lord is at hand. We live like those

  889. who are looking for our Lord.

  890. And if we don't believe it, why should

  891. they?

  892. There's a story about uh William Bordon.

  893. 1904, he was heir to the Bordon Dair

  894. estate. Graduated

  895. from high school, a millionaire. A

  896. millionaire in his time in 1904,

  897. a lot more money than a millionaire

  898. then. Now, a lot of money now, but it

  899. was a boatload of money then. His

  900. parents gave him a trip around the world

  901. traveling through Asia, Middle East, and

  902. Europe. Gave Bordon a burden for the

  903. world's hurting people. Writing whom he

  904. said, "I'm going to give my life to

  905. prepare for the mission field."

  906. When he made his decision, he wrote on

  907. the back of his Bible, "No reserves."

  908. turning down high-paying job offers.

  909. After graduating from Yale University,

  910. he entered two more words in the Bible.

  911. No retreats.

  912. No reserves. No retreats. Completing

  913. studies at Princeton Seminary. Bordon

  914. sailed for China to work with Muslims,

  915. stopping first at Egypt for some

  916. preparation. While there, he was

  917. stricken with cerebral menitis and died

  918. within a month.

  919. A waste, you say? Not in God's plan. In

  920. his Bible, underneath the words no

  921. reserves and no retreats, he'd written

  922. no regrets.

  923. No regrets.

  924. We don't have charge of how long our

  925. life lasts. We don't have charge of how

  926. God will use us. We don't always know

  927. what God's doing. But, you know, many

  928. people went to the mission field because

  929. of his death.

  930. And so may may we uh commit ourselves to

  931. his mottos.

  932. Uh no reserves, no regrets,

  933. no retreats.

  934. Jeremiah put his money where his mouth

  935. was. The purchase was made. Then the

  936. prayer went up.

  937. What am I supposed to do here? I've done

  938. it. Now what?

  939. And the purchase,

  940. the purchase was made, the prayer went

  941. out, and then the prophecy came

  942. and God gave him insight into why he

  943. asked him to do commanded him to do what

  944. he did and he understood it.

  945. Practical demonstration of faith in the

  946. future of the nation. That's what he

  947. gave with by all this. The Lord's answer

  948. was uh to purchase that that to this

  949. purchase was to tell him what was coming

  950. and how it was coming and all the good

  951. things about it.

  952. Well, um I hope this been helpful to you

  953. tonight as we move through the new

  954. covenant and think about it. Let me read

  955. a couple of things from other authors on

  956. this particular section of scripture.

  957. Philip Reichen said, "How much a how

  958. much of a piece of real estate is really

  959. worth depends on what is expected to

  960. happen to it in the future,

  961. right? It's a bad time to buy when they

  962. the Babylonians are around, at least the

  963. near future." And so, uh, that if that's

  964. how you would look at it, that's how you

  965. should look at it. So, it's a long-term

  966. investment. Take the long view. If

  967. you're going to live your life for

  968. Jesus, you got to take the long view.

  969. You got to look past your life. Past

  970. your lifetime.

  971. Not here just for me. Don't come to

  972. church. Don't pick a church just because

  973. I get something out of it. Pick a church

  974. because I believe this is a place where

  975. other people will benefit after I'm

  976. gone.

  977. And you know, you take the long view and

  978. it's very important.

  979. Um,

  980. so

  981. may God help us to do the same. Seek the

  982. things that are above,

  983. Colossians 3:1 says,

    Colossians 3:1

  984. and not the things that are on the

  985. earth.

  986. I I'm I I trust that we understand that

  987. and I trust that we will commit

  988. ourselves to that

  989. and follow Jeremiah and his faith.

  990. We walk by faith, not by what? Sight.

  991. And if we're walking by faith, we walk

  992. by what God says, not what we see.

  993. Some of us have invested a lot of time

  994. in people that we wonder,

  995. is that investment,

  996. my time, worth it?

  997. do how he's doing it and we're not it's

  998. it's beyond us.

  999. And so we just do what God tells us to

1000. do. And when providence hits us with

1001. something that we didn't expect, that

  1002. doesn't even seem right.

1003. Seems like this doesn't make sense.

  1004. We embrace it.

1005. Not just because we can't change it. But

1006. because we know God has good purposes in

1007. if I Jeremiah in prison and the

1008. government hates me and the Babylonians

1009. has taken over the city, the people

1010. outside are hostile. The people inside

1011. are hostile. I'm sitting in prison. I

1012. would think those 17 shekels are very

  1013. important.

1014. The liquid liquid assets are important

  1015. in this situation.

1016. I can't I'm not likely to get too much
