  1. Please open your Bibles to Revelation chapter 20.

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  2. If you don't have a Bible, please raise your hand.

  3. We'd love to bring a Bible for you that you can have and you can use.

  4. We've been going through our series in the book of Revelation.

  5. We're coming to the end here, the last few chapters.

  6. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  7. Father, all scripture is breathed out by you.

  8. Every word, and therefore every word is profitable for us.

  9. It's able to make us wise for salvation in Jesus Christ

  10. and it is profitable for equipping us and building us up

  11. so that we might be complete, equipped for every good work.

  12. And so, Lord, we don't skip passages.

  13. We come even to a difficult passage like this,

  14. expecting to hear from you,

  15. wanting to learn from you.

  16. So, Lord, teach us and lead us.

  17. We humble ourselves before you.

  18. Exalt the name of your Son, Jesus Christ,

  19. and humble us so that with greater humility and love

  20. we might engage with one another

  21. and with others who might disagree with us

  22. on a number of issues related to this passage,

  23. but also so that we might conduct ourselves

  24. and all our dealings with great love.

  25. Help us in Jesus' name we pray.

  26. Amen.

  27. If you're able, please stand and join me

  28. in reading God's word from Revelation 21 to 6.

  29. I will read it out loud for us

  30. and you can follow along with your eyes.

  31. Revelation 20 verses 1 to 6.

    Revelation 20:1–6

  32. Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven,

  33. holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit

  34. and a great chain.

  35. And he seized the dragon,

  36. that ancient serpent,

  37. who is the devil and Satan,

  38. and bound him for a thousand years

  39. and threw him into the pit

  40. and shut it and sealed it over him

  41. so that he might not deceive the nations any longer

  42. until the thousand years were ended.

  43. After that, he must be released for a little while.

  44. Then I saw thrones

  45. and seated on them

  46. were those to whom the authority to judge was committed.

  47. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded

  48. for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God

  49. and those who had not worshipped the beast or its image

  50. and had not received its mark on their foreheads

  51. or their hands.

  52. They came to life

  53. and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

  54. The rest of the dead did not come to life

  55. until the thousand years were ended.

  56. This is the first resurrection.

  57. Blessed and holy is the one

  58. who shares in the first resurrection.

  59. Over such, the second death has no power.

  60. But they will be priests of God and of Christ

  61. and they will reign with him for a thousand years.

  62. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  63. You may be seated.

  64. I feel like I owe people who are here

  65. for the first time an apology

  66. because this is the most hotly debated passage

  67. in the entire book of Revelation,

  68. possibly in the entire Bible.

  69. It tells us about a period of time

  70. when Satan will be bound for a thousand years

  71. and the people of God will reign with Christ

  72. for a thousand years.

  73. And before, well actually that depends

  74. on how you interpret this.

  75. But exactly how long this millennial period is,

  76. whether it's a literal thousand years

  77. or a figurative thousand years,

  78. whether it will occur in heaven

  79. with believers reigning in their souls

  80. or on earth,

  81. when exactly it will occur.

  82. It will occur before Christ returns

  83. or after Christ returns.

  84. All of these things are contested points

  85. about which many faithful Bible-believing Christians disagree.

  86. Someone has joked that the millennium

  87. is a thousand years of peace

  88. that Christians love to fight about

  89. because of the difficulty of this passage

  90. and the history of extensive debate surrounding it

  91. and the fact that many Christians

  92. have strong, very strong opinions about it

  93. and have divided over these issues.

  94. I'm going to do something unusual

  95. and spend two weeks teaching on Revelation 21 to 6.

  96. And this week I'm going to provide

  97. mostly the historical background

  98. and a theological overview of the millennium.

  99. And then next week we're going to get

  100. into the nitty-gritty exegetical details

  101. of the passage itself.

  102. So normally I don't like to do something like this.

  103. I like to be close to the text.

  104. But a friend of mine who's a pastor

  105. said he took four weeks to do it.

  106. So you guys, I'm sparing you guys of that.

  107. And he said he did that

  108. and had all the qualifications

  109. and still at the end of the four weeks

  110. some people decide to leave the church

  111. because of this.

  112. And so that's why I think it's important

  113. to give this kind of context and background.

  114. I don't think that's going to happen in our church

  115. but I can surprise myself.

  116. We'll see what happens here.

  117. Now, I think a controversial passage like this

  118. is in Scripture

  119. and God gives us passages like this

  120. as a way of keeping us humble.

  121. It reminds us that we don't have all the answers.

  122. So I can be so prideful

  123. with the little knowledge that I have.

  124. Imagine what kind of prideful monster I would be

  125. if I had all the knowledge.

  126. Perfect knowledge.

  127. Knew everything.

  128. And so I think this is intended to keep us humble.

  129. It reminds us that in this age

  130. before the second coming of Christ

  131. and the new heavens and the new earth

  132. we know in part

  133. and we prophesy in part

  134. as it says in 1 Corinthians 13.9.

  135. It reminds us that knowledge puffs up

  136. but love builds up.

  137. This is in 1 Corinthians 8.1.

  138. So the doctrine of the millennium

  139. is not a matter of indifference

  140. that Paul speaks of in Romans 14.

  141. But his exhortation there to us

  142. about protecting one another's liberty,

  143. freedom of conscience

  144. is still helpful for us.

  145. So I'm going to read that before we start.

  146. It says in Romans 14,

  147. as for the one who is weak in faith,

  148. welcome him,

  149. but not to quarrel over opinions.

  150. One person believes he may eat anything

  151. while the weak person eats only vegetables.

  152. One person esteems one day as better than another

  153. while another esteems all days alike.

  154. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.

  155. So Paul's using this example.

  156. He clearly has an opinion about it

  157. because he says that people who only eat vegetables

  158. are the ones who are weaker in faith.

  159. He has an opinion about it.

  160. But he says that this is a matter of indifference.

  161. It's not something that really matters.

  162. And so when he was dealing with believers

  163. who by their conviction believed

  164. that they should only eat vegetables

  165. or should never eat meat

  166. that had been sacrificed to idols,

  167. he would accommodate them humbly

  168. because it's a matter of indifference.

  169. There are some things

  170. that are not worth quarreling over.

  171. And in those cases,

  172. and I think this millennium,

  173. I don't think it's that kind of matters of indifference.

  174. I think it's important and consequential.

  175. But it's still something

  176. that I think people can have the freedom of conscience

  177. to disagree about

  178. and be faithful Christians in.

  179. So that raises the question, however,

  180. how do we determine

  181. what is something to divide over

  182. and what isn't something to divide over?

  183. What's essential doctrine

  184. and what's not essential doctrine?

  185. If you walk into an emergency room,

  186. the doctors and nurses

  187. assess the severity of your illness

  188. and determine the order of priority

  189. in which you should be treated.

  190. Every time I've gone to the emergency room

  191. for something,

  192. I've had to wait many, many hours,

  193. which tells me that

  194. they clearly don't think

  195. that my problem is as severe

  196. as I think it is, right?

  197. And so this is,

  198. you have to use the process of triaging

  199. in order to determine

  200. who should be treated first.

  201. And similarly, we need a process

  202. for theological triaging.

  203. And to that end,

  204. there's a really helpful book

  205. that I recommend to all of you

  206. by Gavin Ortlund entitled

  207. Finding the Right Hills to Die On.

  208. In the book, he argues

  209. that we should avoid

  210. both doctrinal minimalism

  211. and doctrinal sectarianism.

  212. As the old saying goes,

  213. quote,

  214. there is no doctrine

  215. a fundamentalist won't fight over

  216. and no doctrine

  217. a liberal will fight over, right?

  218. So that's painting in broad strokes

  219. and not entirely fair

  220. to either fundamentalists or liberals,

  221. but you get the point.

  222. Doctrinal sectarianism

  223. is when we find too many reasons

  224. to separate from Christian brothers

  225. and sisters with whom

  226. we share a profound spiritual unity

  227. and not allowing them

  228. the liberty of conscience

  229. that Paul spoke of in Romans 14.

  230. Titus 3, 9 to 11 describes this.

  231. It says,

  232. but avoid foolish controversies,

  233. genealogies, dissensions,

  234. and quarrels about the law,

  235. for they are unprofitable and worthless.

  236. As for a person

  237. who stirs up division

  238. after warning him once

  239. and then twice

  240. have nothing more to do with him,

  241. knowing that such a person

  242. is warped and sinful,

  243. he is self-condemned.

  244. That's doctrinal sectarianism.

  245. Doctrinal minimalism

  246. is when we find

  247. the lowest common denominator,

  248. doctrinal denominator,

  249. and say, in essence,

  250. that most other doctrines

  251. basically don't really matter.

  252. But theology is important.

  253. It shapes the way we live.

  254. We cannot obey

  255. what we do not know

  256. and what we do not understand.

  257. We're supposed to be transformed

  258. by the renewal of our mind,

  259. it says in Romans 12, 2,

  260. that by testing,

  261. we may discern

  262. what is the will of God,

  263. what is good

  264. and acceptable and perfect.

  265. Philippians 3, 15-16 says,

  266. let those of you

  267. who are mature

  268. think this way.

  269. And if in anything

  270. you think otherwise,

  271. God will reveal

  272. that also to you.

  273. Only let us hold true

  274. to what we have attained.

  275. As God reveals

  276. more and more

  277. of what we ought to think,

  278. we mature in accordance

  279. with the knowledge

  280. we have attained.

  281. So we need to steer clear

  282. of both of these

  283. equal and opposite errors,

  284. doctrinal sectarianism

  285. and doctrinal minimalism.

  286. And then Gavin Ortlin

  287. delineates four helpful categories

  288. in which we can prioritize

  289. our theological doctrines.

  290. The first category is primary.

  291. The Bible itself uses this language,

  292. 1 Corinthians 15, 3-4.

  293. It says,

  294. The Bible teaches us

  295. that the gospel of Jesus Christ,

  296. this doctrine that Jesus

  297. is the Son of God

  298. and Son of Man

  299. who died as the atoning sacrifice

  300. for our sins,

  301. and He was raised on the third day

  302. to be victorious

  303. over sin and death

  304. so that we can all be forgiven.

  305. Those who put their trust in Jesus

  306. and repent of their sins

  307. can be forgiven

  308. and have eternal life with Him.

  309. That's the doctrine

  310. that is of first importance.

  311. The doctrines

  312. in the primary category

  313. are doctrines

  314. that are essential

  315. for the gospel.

  316. People who don't believe

  317. these doctrines

  318. are not Christians at all.

  319. So these doctrines

  320. unite the entire

  321. universal church.

  322. These are doctrines

  323. that we must fight for

  324. and be willing to die for

  325. with courage

  326. and conviction.

  327. Other primary doctrines

  328. include our belief

  329. in the Trinity

  330. because without the Trinity

  331. you lose the gospel

  332. if Jesus is not

  333. the Son of God.

  334. The incarnation

  335. because if Jesus

  336. is not also the Son of Man

  337. we also lose the gospel.

  338. And the atonement

  339. of Jesus on the cross.

  340. Our belief in the inspiration

  341. and authority of Scripture

  342. because if the Scripture

  343. is not the inspired testimony

  344. of God

  345. how do you even know

  346. the gospel?

  347. This is what makes us

  348. this is what it's able

  349. to teach us

  350. and able to make us wise

  351. for salvation in Jesus Christ.

  352. So that's primary.

  353. The secondary doctrines

  354. are not direct gospel issues

  355. and genuine Christians

  356. do at times disagree

  357. about them.

  358. However, they are nonetheless

  359. urgent for the church

  360. because they have implications

  361. for the gospel.

  362. Differences in secondary doctrines

  363. have significant impact

  364. on our life

  365. how we live

  366. and on our doctrine

  367. what we believe.

  368. And for that reason

  369. disagreements

  370. along these lines

  371. I do think

  372. they warrant

  373. formal division

  374. along denominational

  375. or ecclesiastical

  376. local church lines

  377. because they raise

  378. urgent issues

  379. of faithfulness

  380. to Scripture

  381. because if you don't

  382. agree on these things

  383. you can't be faithful

  384. to Scripture

  385. according to your conviction.

  386. Secondary doctrines

  387. include our belief

  388. in the believer's baptism

  389. that only people

  390. who are mature enough

  391. to give a credible

  392. profession of faith

  393. which necessarily

  394. excludes infants

  395. should be baptized.

  396. That's our church's

  397. position on that.

  398. This doctrine

  399. protects the gospel.

  400. Complementarianism

  401. is another one.

  402. Our belief

  403. that God created

  404. men and women

  405. as equal

  406. co-heirs

  407. of the grace of life

  408. that is in Christ

  409. but that they

  410. nonetheless

  411. have distinct

  412. and non-interchangeable

  413. roles within the household

  414. of the family

  415. and within the household

  416. of God,

  417. the church.

  418. This doctrine

  419. depicts the gospel

  420. because the husband's

  421. love for his wife

  422. and the wife's

  423. submission to him

  424. is supposed to be

  425. a picture of Christ's

  426. love for the church

  427. and the church's

  428. submission to Christ.

  429. I also would consider

  430. continuationism

  431. to be a secondary doctrine

  432. because our belief

  433. that the gifts

  434. of the Holy Spirit

  435. that even the miraculous

  436. and supernatural ones

  437. continue to this modern day

  438. and did not seize

  439. with the apostles

  440. it flows out of the gospel.

  441. It flows out of our belief

  442. that Jesus is the one

  443. who secured the gift

  444. of the Holy Spirit

  445. for us

  446. and that continues

  447. to this day.

  448. And so during my first year

  449. in seminary

  450. I was part of a

  451. Presbyterian church

  452. but my convictions

  453. about continuationism

  454. and believer's baptism

  455. led me to the conclusion

  456. that I could not be

  457. a thriving member

  458. let alone a pastor

  459. in that denomination

  460. and that's why

  461. I left that denomination

  462. in search of

  463. a denomination

  464. where I can have

  465. a church home

  466. and that's how

  467. I found our current

  468. denomination

  469. sovereign grace churches

  470. for which I am

  471. very grateful.

  472. So that's secondary category.

  473. Then there are

  474. tertiary categories.

  475. The tertiary doctrines

  476. these are doctrines

  477. that are neither essential

  478. for the gospel

  479. nor urgent

  480. for the church

  481. but because

  482. they still pertain

  483. to life and doctrine

  484. of the Christian

  485. they are still

  486. consequential.

  487. They're tertiary

  488. but they're still

  489. consequential

  490. and important.

  491. Included in this category

  492. will be things like

  493. how should men

  494. and women

  495. dress

  496. and wear

  497. their hair.

  498. Now

  499. this might be

  500. a controversial opinion

  501. but I don't think

  502. women should dress

  503. in a manner

  504. that makes them

  505. look like men

  506. and I don't think

  507. that men should dress

  508. in a manner

  509. that makes them

  510. look like women

  511. because God

  512. designed humanity

  513. to be men and women

  514. and to be distinct.

  515. Now

  516. that also means

  517. I don't

  518. you know

  519. if that sounds

  520. crazy to you

  521. read 1 Corinthians 11

  522. and you can listen

  523. to my sermon on that

  524. when you get home.

  525. But I will never use

  526. however

  527. my pastoral authority

  528. to demand

  529. that a man

  530. cut his hair short

  531. or a woman

  532. grow out her hair long.

  533. Why?

  534. Because this is

  535. a tertiary issue

  536. and I believe

  537. that faithful Christians

  538. can disagree on this.

  539. And be members

  540. of the same

  541. faithful members

  542. of the same

  543. local church

  544. together.

  545. They are still

  546. important

  547. and they are not

  548. issues to divide over

  549. but they still

  550. have consequences

  551. for how we live

  552. and obey God.

  553. Tithing I think

  554. is in this category.

  555. Is tithing

  556. giving 10%

  557. of our income

  558. is that still

  559. a legal

  560. biblical requirement

  561. or is that something

  562. that has been

  563. fulfilled by Christ?

  564. Churches disagree on this.

  565. I'd also include

  566. philosophy and ministry issues

  567. like how often

  568. should the church

  569. celebrate the Lord's Supper.

  570. I think that the church

  571. to celebrate the Lord's Supper

  572. I think is more of a secondary

  573. a higher order issue

  574. but how often to celebrate

  575. exactly how to celebrate

  576. I think those are

  577. tertiary issues.

  578. Should a local church

  579. in normal times

  580. offer a live stream

  581. of the church's service

  582. online?

  583. That's a tertiary issue.

  584. What does that teach

  585. about what a local church is?

  586. What Christian community

  587. is meant to be?

  588. What does live streaming

  589. services teach

  590. about worship?

  591. Are these questions

  592. consequential?

  593. Absolutely,

  594. they're consequential

  595. but these are not issues

  596. to divide over

  597. and believers may have

  598. differences in these matters

  599. yet maintain the unity

  600. of the spirit

  601. in the same local church.

  602. So primary,

  603. secondary,

  604. and tertiary issues

  605. are not something

  606. that we can be agnostic

  607. or neutral about

  608. because they have consequences

  609. for our life and doctrine.

  610. Even if you don't take

  611. a position in your thoughts,

  612. you're going to end up

  613. taking a position

  614. by default

  615. in your actions

  616. because they determine

  617. how we obey God

  618. and how we're faithful to Him.

  619. So these are not issues

  620. you can just be neutral about.

  621. You do have to make a decision.

  622. Then finally,

  623. there are matters

  624. of indifference.

  625. That's the fourth category.

  626. Things that don't actually matter.

  627. Things that are immaterial

  628. that the Bible

  629. is not concerned about

  630. such as what kind of church

  631. building to worship in.

  632. Whether those who distribute communion

  633. should wear gloves or not.

  634. Believe it or not,

  635. churches disagreed

  636. on these issues.

  637. Whether the pastor

  638. should wear a suit or not.

  639. So we once had a church member

  640. in our church

  641. that believed that

  642. I as a pastor

  643. should not wear shorts

  644. to our Wednesday prayer service.

  645. And I disagreed with her.

  646. I mean,

  647. it's in my house.

  648. Right?

  649. But I disagreed with her.

  650. But I actually,

  651. during the entire time

  652. that this church member

  653. was in our church,

  654. I did not wear shorts

  655. to the prayer service.

  656. Because it's a matter

  657. of indifference.

  658. It doesn't matter.

  659. So it doesn't matter.

  660. Okay, sure.

  661. Like, I can do that.

  662. That's easy for me to do.

  663. Does that make sense?

  664. Yeah.

  665. So these are matters

  666. of indifference.

  667. And in matters

  668. of indifference,

  669. out of humility,

  670. we should be willing

  671. to adapt ourselves

  672. for the sake of others.

  673. And that's what Paul writes about

  674. in chapter 9

  675. of 1 Corinthians.

  676. For though I am free from all,

  677. I have made myself

  678. a servant to all

  679. that I might win

  680. more of them.

  681. To the Jews,

  682. I became as a Jew

  683. in order to win Jews.

  684. To those under the law,

  685. I became as one

  686. under the law,

  687. though not being myself

  688. under the law,

  689. that I might win

  690. those under the law.

  691. To those outside the law,

  692. I became as one

  693. outside the law,

  694. not being outside the law

  695. of God,

  696. but under the law of Christ,

  697. that I might win

  698. those outside the law.

  699. To the weak,

  700. I became weak,

  701. that I might win the weak.

  702. I have become all things

  703. to all people,

  704. that by all means

  705. I might save some.

  706. I do it all

  707. for the sake of the gospel,

  708. that I may share with them

  709. in its blessings.

  710. That's what we do

  711. for things that are

  712. matters of indifference.

  713. Now, having established

  714. these categories,

  715. what criteria should we use

  716. to triage our doctrines?

  717. Orland asks four

  718. very helpful questions

  719. in the book.

  720. First question is,

  721. how clear is the Bible

  722. on this doctrine?

  723. I think clarity

  724. would be affected

  725. by how often

  726. it is addressed

  727. in Scripture,

  728. how clearly

  729. it is taught,

  730. or whether it's something

  731. that people

  732. have not been able

  733. to agree throughout

  734. the history.

  735. What is the doctrine's

  736. importance to the gospel?

  737. That's the second question

  738. to ask.

  739. Third,

  740. what is the testimony

  741. of the historical church

  742. concerning the doctrine?

  743. I think this one's

  744. particularly important,

  745. not more important

  746. than the other questions,

  747. but important because

  748. every generation

  749. has its own blind spots.

  750. Because of our own

  751. cultural context,

  752. we have our own blind spots

  753. that we can't see

  754. some things.

  755. And people from other cultures

  756. who didn't have

  757. those blind spots

  758. but had different blind spots

  759. can help us.

  760. We can help each other see.

  761. So what is the testimony

  762. of the historical church

  763. concerning this doctrine?

  764. And then finally,

  765. what is the doctrine's effect

  766. upon the church today?

  767. I think these are really

  768. helpful questions

  769. to keep in mind.

  770. It's because of my answers

  771. to these triage questions

  772. that I consider,

  773. so for example,

  774. two doctrinal stances

  775. of our church

  776. that I get the most questions

  777. about at membership interviews

  778. is continuationism,

  779. our belief that the gifts

  780. of the Holy Spirit

  781. continue today,

  782. and complementarianism,

  783. our belief in the roles

  784. of distinct but non-interchangeable

  785. roles of man and woman.

  786. Now, I consider these,

  787. based on my answers

  788. to these triage questions,

  789. to be secondary doctrines

  790. that warrant dividing over

  791. along denominational

  792. and ecclesiastical lines

  793. rather than as tertiary doctrines

  794. of indifference.

  795. Why?

  796. Because they have clear

  797. biblical support

  798. and they have urgent implications

  799. for our life and doctrine,

  800. and because the church universal

  801. had unanimous agreement

  802. on these issues

  803. until the 16th century

  804. for continuationism

  805. and 19th century

  806. for complementarianism.

  807. So also,

  808. it's helpful to know,

  809. this is another thing

  810. to think about,

  811. that the more intimately

  812. and closely you partner

  813. with someone in ministry,

  814. the higher the level

  815. of agreement you need.

  816. So for example,

  817. can I partner with Jews

  818. and Muslims

  819. in distributing food

  820. to the poor

  821. in our neighborhood?

  822. Absolutely.

  823. That's a common cause

  824. that I can join them in,

  825. gladly join them in,

  826. to do that work.

  827. Now, can I sit around

  828. the circle with them

  829. and sing worship songs

  830. and pray with them?

  831. Absolutely not.

  832. Because we would not be praying

  833. to the same God

  834. and there would be no way

  835. to sing songs

  836. to our God

  837. without offending them deeply.

  838. I'd have to witness

  839. and be part of,

  840. in some way,

  841. idolatry

  842. if I were forced to do that.

  843. Now, can I sit around

  844. the circle

  845. and sing songs

  846. and pray with

  847. other Christians

  848. with whom I disagree

  849. on secondary doctrines?

  850. Absolutely.

  851. I'd be glad to do that.

  852. But can I be

  853. a member

  854. of a same local church

  855. with those same Christians

  856. that disagree

  857. on secondary doctrines?

  858. No.

  859. Because if the church

  860. were governed

  861. according to their convictions

  862. on these secondary matters,

  863. every week

  864. I would be sitting there

  865. having my conscience violated

  866. and feeling like

  867. I'm in disobedience

  868. to scriptures.

  869. Right?

  870. Do you guys see

  871. the difference,

  872. the rising level

  873. of intimacy and partnership

  874. and the more degree

  875. of agreement

  876. and clarity you need?

  877. Now, can I,

  878. well, you know,

  879. if,

  880. can I then be

  881. the same member

  882. of the same local church

  883. with Christians,

  884. other Christians

  885. who disagree

  886. on tertiary matters?

  887. Yes, absolutely.

  888. But,

  889. can I be

  890. on the same

  891. local church

  892. eldership

  893. with Christians

  894. who disagree

  895. on these tertiary matters?

  896. In some cases,

  897. no.

  898. Because if we had

  899. a church elder

  900. in our church

  901. who, for example,

  902. thought that,

  903. you know,

  904. having live streaming

  905. our service

  906. is the best way

  907. to reach the lost.

  908. And they wanted

  909. to do that

  910. every single week.

  911. And I'm convinced

  912. from my convictions

  913. that that would be

  914. detrimental

  915. to the health

  916. of the church

  917. because it communicates

  918. false ideas

  919. about what a church is

  920. because to me,

  921. church is by definition

  922. a gathering.

  923. And you don't gather

  924. when you're watching

  925. a service,

  926. you're consuming.

  927. Right?

  928. And so,

  929. that's a significant

  930. disagreement

  931. that affects

  932. the life of the church.

  933. So, like,

  934. yes,

  935. I can be,

  936. if you think that,

  937. you can be a member

  938. of our church,

  939. but can I have someone

  940. who thinks differently

  941. from me

  942. be on the same

  943. local church eldership?

  944. Probably not.

  945. And so,

  946. that's what I mean.

  947. These are things,

  948. the higher,

  949. the more intimacy

  950. of partnership,

  951. the more agreement

  952. you need.

  953. Now,

  954. let's ask these

  955. theological triage questions

  956. of our passage

  957. this morning,

  958. Revelation 20,

  959. 1-6,

  960. the doctrine

  961. of the millennium.

  962. How clear

  963. is the Bible

  964. on this doctrine?

  965. It's not very clear.

  966. Yeah.

  967. Because,

  968. when one of the main

  969. difficulties

  970. is that this is

  971. the only passage

  972. in all of Scripture

  973. that explicitly

  974. talks about

  975. the millennial reign

  976. of Christ.

  977. It's the only one.

  978. And so,

  979. if you disagree

  980. on this one passage,

  981. then you really kind of

  982. have nowhere else to go.

  983. Right?

  984. So,

  985. it's not that clear.

  986. Now,

  987. what is this doctrine's

  988. importance to the gospel?

  989. It's neither essential

  990. nor urgent

  991. to the gospel.

  992. It is consequential,

  993. and I'll talk about

  994. the implications

  995. of it later on.

  996. What is the testimony

  997. of the historical church

  998. concerning this doctrine?

  999. The church

  1000. has had at least

  1001. two differing positions

  1002. on this doctrine

  1003. since at least

  1004. the second century A.D.

  1005. Already,

1006. writing in the second century,

  1007. church father

  1008. Justin Martyr

  1009. speaks of the belief

  1010. that Christ will return

  1011. to establish

  1012. the millennial kingdom

  1013. this way.

  1014. I and many others

  1015. are of this opinion

  1016. and believe that

  1017. such will take place

  1018. as you assuredly

  1019. are aware,

1020. but on the other hand,

  1021. I signify to you

  1022. that many who belong

  1023. to the pure

  1024. and pious faith

  1025. and are true Christians

  1026. think otherwise.

  1027. So,

  1028. already,

  1029. in the second century,

  1030. the church fathers

  1031. recognized that

  1032. there was a diversity

  1033. of views

  1034. on the millennium

1035. and that it was not

  1036. something to divide over.

  1037. It's very different

  1038. from some of these

  1039. other secondary issues

  1040. I mentioned to you.

  1041. What is this doctrine's

1042. effect upon the church today?

  1043. It does have some

  1044. significant effect

  1045. upon the church today

1046. and I'm going to discuss

  1047. those later on

  1048. in my sermon.

  1049. However,

  1050. because,

  1051. as we have seen,

  1052. this doctrine

  1053. is not very clear,

  1054. does not have implications

  1055. for the gospel,

  1056. and it has been

  1057. disagreed upon

1058. since the early church age.

  1059. That's why

  1060. I consider

  1061. the doctrine

  1062. of the millennium

1063. to be a tertiary doctrine

  1064. over which

  1065. we should not divide.

  1066. So,

  1067. if you don't agree

  1068. with me

  1069. at the end

  1070. of my sermon today

1071. and the sermon next week

  1072. on exactly

  1073. what the millennium is,

  1074. that's okay.

  1075. Please don't leave

  1076. the church for that.

  1077. As is the case

  1078. with other doctrines,

  1079. people can tend

  1080. toward doctrinal

  1081. sectarianism

  1082. or doctrinal minimalism

  1083. when it comes

  1084. to the millennium

  1085. as well.

  1086. And I'm on

  1087. too many mailing lists

1088. and once in a while

  1089. I get an email

  1090. from some organization

  1091. that's emailing

1092. all the local church pastors

  1093. that can find

  1094. with openings,

  1095. a list of openings

  1096. for other pastoral jobs.

  1097. I have never searched

1098. for a different pastoral job,

  1099. so don't worry.

  1100. I've never searched

  1101. for another job,

  1102. period.

1103. But they send me those

  1104. and it's interesting

  1105. to read those sometimes

  1106. because they'll tell you

  1107. what they're looking for

  1108. in a pastor

  1109. and sometimes

  1110. they're oddly specific.

  1111. And so,

  1112. one of those things

  1113. I saw was

  1114. that the pastor

  1115. has to be a

  1116. pre-tribulational rapture

  1117. dispensationalist

  1118. premillennialist.

  1119. Right.

  1120. So,

  1121. that was a requirement.

  1122. Now,

  1123. you guys laugh

  1124. but some churches

  1125. take this very seriously.

  1126. That church is using,

  1127. I think,

  1128. a tertiary issue

  1129. as a litmus test

  1130. for pastoral faithfulness.

  1131. And I don't think

1132. that's good for the church.

  1133. They're ruling out

  1134. many faithful,

  1135. godly,

  1136. gifted pastors

  1137. by insisting on something

1138. that the Bible talks about

  1139. only once.

  1140. It's not healthy,

  1141. in my opinion.

  1142. That's an example

  1143. of doctrinal sectarianism.

  1144. On the other hand,

  1145. we should also avoid

  1146. the pitfalls

  1147. of doctrinal minimalism

1148. when it comes to this.

  1149. There are some people

  1150. who say,

  1151. post-millennial,

  1152. pre-millennial,

  1153. amillennial,

  1154. I have no idea,

  1155. I'm a pan-millennialist.

  1156. What does that mean?

1157. It's all going to pan out

  1158. in the end.

  1159. I've heard a pastor

  1160. tell this joke,

  1161. it's pretty funny.

  1162. I see the appeal

1163. of that kind of attitude,

  1164. but our view

  1165. of the millennium

  1166. has significant effects

  1167. upon the church today.

  1168. And we should cherish

  1169. and study

  1170. and obey

  1171. all of God's word.

  1172. Throwing our hands up

  1173. in the air

1174. and not doing the hard work

  1175. of thinking deeply

  1176. about difficult

  1177. theological issues

  1178. is not a virtue.

1179. So let's do some hard thinking

  1180. about Revelation 20.

1181. There are four main views

  1182. on the meaning

1183. of the binding of Satan

1184. and the reign of Christ

  1185. during the millennium,

  1186. with much intramural debate

  1187. within each of them.

1188. And so if I have the,

  1189. there are four views.

  1190. First is historic pre-millennialism.

  1191. Second,

  1192. that's the view I hold today.

1193. So just so you know

1194. how difficult this issue is,

1195. I began the sermon series

  1196. in Revelation

  1197. as an amillennial,

  1198. number four.

1199. And then by the time,

1200. by the time we got

  1201. to this point

  1202. of our sermon series,

  1203. I'm now a historical

  1204. pre-millennial.

  1205. So this is a,

1206. so if you don't know

  1207. what you think

  1208. about these issues,

  1209. I understand.

  1210. That's where I am.

  1211. The second,

  1212. dispensational pre-millennialism,

  1213. third, post-millennialism,

  1214. and fourth,

  1215. amillennialism.

1216. I'm going to talk about

  1217. each of those.

  1218. Here's a diagram

1219. that our one and only

1220. John Buckley made for us

  1221. on short notice

  1222. this week.

  1223. This is now,

  1224. so yesterday,

1225. Ed and I got some

  1226. good laughs looking

  1227. at the diagrams

  1228. on the different views

  1229. of the millennium online

  1230. because Christians

  1231. who are serious

  1232. about the Bible

  1233. are not always serious

  1234. about beautiful graphics.

1235. And so this is now

  1236. officially the best-looking

1237. diagram on the four views

  1238. of the millennium online.

  1239. Yeah.

  1240. And so,

  1241. thank you, John.

  1242. The historic pre-millennialism

  1243. is called historic

  1244. because it most closely

  1245. resembles the view

  1246. of the millennium

  1247. that the church fathers,

1248. the majority of the church fathers,

  1249. held,

  1250. including Apostle John

  1251. who wrote,

  1252. I don't know,

  1253. I'm not saying

  1254. Apostle John held.

  1255. Apostle John's the one

  1256. who wrote Revelation.

  1257. Apostle John's

  1258. disciple Papias

  1259. and Polycarp

  1260. and Polycarp's

  1261. disciple Irenaeus

  1262. as well as other

  1263. notable church fathers

  1264. like Justin Martyr,

  1265. Tertullian,

  1266. Pseudo-Barnabas,

  1267. Methodius,

  1268. Lactantius,

  1269. Comodianus,

  1270. Theophilus,

  1271. Melito,

  1272. Hippolytus of Rome,

  1273. Victorinus of Petau,

  1274. Nepus,

  1275. Julius Africanus,

  1276. Tatian,

  1277. and Montanus.

  1278. They all believed

  1279. in historic

  1280. pre-millennialism.

  1281. Now,

  1282. the prefix pre-

  1283. means before.

  1284. So pre-millennialism

  1285. is the belief

  1286. that Christ will return

  1287. in his second coming

  1288. before the millennium reign.

  1289. He's going to come

  1290. to establish

  1291. the millennium reign.

  1292. So,

  1293. the people that,

1294. I think this is what

  1295. makes the best sense

  1296. of the scriptural data,

  1297. but there's still

  1298. a lot of questions

  1299. and uncertainties

  1300. around it.

  1301. The most prominent

  1302. modern proponents

  1303. of this view

  1304. are D.A. Carson,

  1305. John Piper,

  1306. and Jim Hamilton,

  1307. among others.

  1308. Dispensational

  1309. pre-millennialism

  1310. shares the name

  1311. pre-millennialism

  1312. with historic

  1313. pre-millennialism

  1314. because it also says

  1315. that Christ's second coming

  1316. will take place

  1317. before the millennial reign,

  1318. so pre-millennial.

  1319. But then,

  1320. after that,

  1321. it departs sharply

  1322. from historic

  1323. dispensationalism.

  1324. Dispensational pre-mill

  1325. argues not only

  1326. that Christ will return

  1327. before the millennium,

  1328. but also

  1329. that he will return

  1330. for a secret

  1331. second coming

  1332. prior to that

  1333. to rapture

  1334. the believers.

  1335. so that they

  1336. don't have to endure

  1337. what they believe

  1338. is seven years

  1339. of tribulation,

  1340. the great tribulation.

  1341. And it's only

  1342. after that secret

  1343. rapture,

  1344. that secret second coming,

  1345. and then the

  1346. great tribulation,

  1347. and then he will

  1348. come in public,

1349. in a public second coming,

  1350. to bring about

  1351. the millennium.

  1352. That's what

  1353. dispensational

  1354. pre-millennialism

  1355. believes.

  1356. So,

  1357. if you can't tell,

1358. so that's the first picture,

1359. is Christ on the cross,

  1360. first coming,

  1361. and that

  1362. the middle here,

  1363. that's the secret

  1364. second coming

  1365. for church only,

  1366. it's raptured,

  1367. and then the tribulation,

  1368. the second coming,

  1369. that's the picture

1370. of Christ on his white horse

  1371. from Revelation 19,

  1372. and then the millennium,

1373. and then the final judgment.

  1374. So that's the picture.

  1375. It's beautiful.

  1376. The most,

  1377. this dispensational

  1378. pre-millennialism

  1379. began in earnest

  1380. with the 19th century

  1381. Plymouth Brethren

  1382. pastor named

  1383. John Nelson Darby,

  1384. you may have heard

  1385. his name before,

  1386. and became prominent

  1387. due to the influence

  1388. of Dallas Theological Seminary

  1389. and the popularity

  1390. of Hal Lindsay's book,

1391. The Late Great Planet Earth,

1392. and the Left Behind series,

1393. which I mentioned to you before,

  1394. Tim Leahy

  1395. and Jerry B. Jenkins.

  1396. The most prominent

  1397. proponent of this view

  1398. nowadays is

  1399. John MacArthur,

  1400. who describes himself

  1401. as a leaky dispensationalist.

  1402. The fact that

1403. this is a modern innovation

1404. is an argument against it.

  1405. This view

  1406. is not attested

1407. among any of the church fathers.

  1408. Moreover,

  1409. the idea

  1410. of a rapture

  1411. is not found

  1412. anywhere

1413. in the book of Revelation.

  1414. It's based,

  1415. people who believe it

  1416. based it on

  1417. 1 Thessalonians 4,

  1418. 16 to 17,

  1419. which says,

  1420. For the Lord himself

  1421. will descend from heaven

1422. with a cry of command,

  1423. with the voice

  1424. of an archangel,

  1425. and with the sound

1426. of the trumpet of God,

1427. and the dead in Christ

  1428. will rise first.

1429. Then we who are alive

  1430. who are left

1431. will be caught up together

1432. with them in the clouds

  1433. to meet the Lord

  1434. in the air,

1435. and so we will always

  1436. be with the Lord.

  1437. So dispensational premils

  1438. argue that that's

  1439. meeting the Lord

  1440. within the air

  1441. refers to us

1442. being caught up in heaven

  1443. to live with Jesus.

  1444. That's a secret rapture.

  1445. However,

  1446. I've mentioned this

  1447. to you before,

  1448. that the Greek word

  1449. translating meet

1450. has a very specific meaning.

  1451. It's a word

  1452. that is used

  1453. in Greek literature

  1454. to mean going out

  1455. to meet someone

  1456. who is already

1457. on his way to you.

  1458. So it's a way

  1459. of going out

  1460. to meet,

  1461. to welcome,

  1462. and escort them back

  1463. to where you're going

  1464. together.

  1465. Or if your enemy

  1466. is coming out

  1467. to meet you

  1468. and you go out

  1469. to meet them

  1470. who's already

1471. on their way to you,

  1472. it's about meeting

  1473. halfway so that

  1474. you can come back.

  1475. So it's not a word

  1476. that describes

  1477. meeting him

  1478. and then going

  1479. away somewhere.

  1480. It's a word

  1481. that describes

  1482. meeting Jesus

  1483. in the air

  1484. as a way of

  1485. greeting an important

  1486. dignitary

  1487. and then coming back

  1488. to where you guys

  1489. are going together.

  1490. And so that's,

  1491. I don't think,

  1492. the right interpretation

  1493. of that word,

  1494. of that passage

  1495. in general.

  1496. And another passage

  1497. that's often used

1498. to argue for the rapture

  1499. is John 14,

  1500. 1-3,

  1501. where Jesus says,

  1502. Let not your hearts

  1503. be troubled.

  1504. Believe in God.

  1505. Believe also in me.

  1506. In my Father's house

  1507. are many rooms.

1508. If it were not so,

1509. would I have told you

1510. that I go to prepare

  1511. a place for you?

1512. And if I go and prepare

  1513. a place for you,

  1514. I will come again

1515. and I will take you

  1516. to myself

  1517. that where I am

  1518. you may be

  1519. also.

  1520. That's another passage

  1521. that people point to

  1522. as an example

  1523. of the rapture,

  1524. the secret second coming

  1525. rapture.

  1526. However,

1527. I do think this passage

  1528. is talking about

  1529. Jesus' return.

  1530. But I think it's

  1531. talking about

  1532. his final second coming

  1533. and I think there's

  1534. only one second coming

  1535. in the Bible

  1536. when Jesus brings about

  1537. the new heaven

  1538. and the new earth,

  1539. establishes the holy city

  1540. in New Jerusalem

  1541. which comes down

  1542. out of heaven

  1543. from God.

  1544. And so Jesus

  1545. returns to the Father

  1546. and prepares these rooms,

  1547. places for his disciples

1548. and then in his second coming

  1549. he brings down

  1550. the heavenly Jerusalem

  1551. where he will take

  1552. his people

  1553. to dwell with him.

  1554. I think that makes

  1555. the best sense

  1556. of John 14.

  1557. Nowhere does John 14

  1558. say that this is

  1559. speaking of Christ's

  1560. secret return

1561. prior to his second coming.

  1562. I just don't think

  1563. that doctrine

  1564. is in scripture

  1565. at all.

  1566. All that to say,

  1567. arguments for

  1568. the secret return

  1569. of Christ

  1570. to rapture

  1571. the saints

  1572. are few

  1573. and I think

  1574. not very strong.

  1575. but the reason

  1576. why people

  1577. subscribe

  1578. to dispensational

  1579. premio

  1580. is not primarily

  1581. because they're

  1582. persuaded by

  1583. these proof texts,

  1584. they're not that

  1585. persuasive,

  1586. but because

  1587. they have bought

  1588. into dispensationalism

  1589. as a theological

  1590. system,

  1591. as a system

  1592. of biblical

  1593. interpretation.

  1594. Dispensationalism

  1595. is the belief

  1596. that God

  1597. has ordered

  1598. human history

  1599. into seven main

  1600. dispensations

  1601. or administrations

  1602. and one of its

  1603. main tenets

  1604. of dispensationalism

  1605. is their literal

  1606. hermeneutic,

  1607. the way they

  1608. interpret the Bible

  1609. literally

  1610. wherever possible.

  1611. And because of that,

  1612. it's a system

  1613. that is very

  1614. attractive

  1615. to theological

  1616. conservatives

  1617. who have

  1618. a very high

  1619. view of scripture,

  1620. which is me.

  1621. And for this reason,

  1622. they expect

  1623. the Old Testament

  1624. prophecies about Israel

  1625. being restored

1626. to the land of Canaan,

  1627. for example,

  1628. and about the temple

  1629. being restored,

  1630. for example.

  1631. They see these

  1632. as not being fulfilled

  1633. figuratively

  1634. and spiritually

  1635. in Jesus Christ,

  1636. but as they

  1637. believe that those

  1638. things will be

  1639. literally and

  1640. physically be fulfilled

1641. in the land of Israel

  1642. in the physical

  1643. temple on Mount Zion.

  1644. So they maintain

  1645. a strict distinction

  1646. between Israel,

  1647. which is made up

  1648. for ethnic Jews,

  1649. and the church.

  1650. That's why I think

  1651. they find this

  1652. system persuasive.

  1653. However,

1654. a problem with this view

  1655. is that the Bible

  1656. itself understands

1657. some of the Old Testament

  1658. prophecies concerning

  1659. the nation of Israel

  1660. as being fulfilled

  1661. spiritually in Jesus Christ.

  1662. For example,

  1663. Revelation 2, 9,

  1664. and 3, 7

  1665. that we saw,

  1666. Jesus denounced

  1667. those who say

  1668. that they are Jews

  1669. and are not,

  1670. but are a synagogue

  1671. of Satan.

  1672. This was a condemnation

  1673. of ethnic Jews

  1674. who rejected

  1675. their Messiah,

  1676. Jesus,

  1677. and persecuted Christians.

  1678. Those who believe

  1679. in Jesus Christ,

  1680. according to Revelation,

  1681. are the true Jews,

  1682. not those who are

  1683. merely ethnic

  1684. descendants of Israel.

  1685. The promises

  1686. that God gave

  1687. to the Jews

  1688. in the Old Testament

  1689. do not belong

  1690. to the children

  1691. of the flesh,

  1692. as Paul writes,

  1693. but to the children

  1694. of the promise

  1695. in Romans 9, 6-8.

  1696. It's the spiritual

  1697. descendants of Israel,

  1698. not the physical

  1699. descendants of Israel,

  1700. ethnic Jews,

1701. who make up true Israel.

  1702. For,

1703. it says in Romans 2,

  1704. 27-28,

1705. no one is a Jew

  1706. who is merely

  1707. one outwardly,

  1708. nor is circumcision

  1709. outward and physical,

1710. but a Jew is one inwardly,

  1711. and circumcision

1712. is a matter of the heart

  1713. by the spirit,

  1714. not by the letter.

  1715. And that's why

  1716. in James 1-1,

  1717. it addresses all Christians,

  1718. both Jews and Gentiles,

  1719. as dispersed

  1720. 12 tribes of Israel.

  1721. We are the true

  1722. Israel of God.

  1723. Likewise,

  1724. the ultimate restoration

  1725. of the Jerusalem temple

  1726. does not happen

  1727. before Christ's return,

  1728. but after Christ's return,

  1729. as we see

  1730. in Revelation 21.

  1731. And it describes

  1732. the people of God,

  1733. the old covenant

  1734. people of God,

  1735. represented by

  1736. the 12 tribes,

1737. the 12 sons of Jacob,

  1738. and the 12 apostles,

  1739. the New Testament

  1740. covenant people of God,

1741. represented by the 12 apostles,

  1742. they make up

  1743. this new city

  1744. of Jerusalem.

  1745. So Revelation itself

  1746. does not insist

  1747. on maintaining

  1748. a strict distinction

  1749. between Israel

  1750. and the church.

  1751. Revelation unites them

1752. as the people of God,

  1753. and this is why

  1754. I don't find

  1755. dispensational premill

  1756. to be persuasive.

1757. But why does this matter?

  1758. Many dispensational

  1759. premillennialists

  1760. follow Hal Lindsey's view

  1761. in the late

  1762. great planet Earth

  1763. and believe

  1764. that, for example,

  1765. the Arab-Israel war

  1766. and the establishment

1767. of the state of Israel

  1768. in 1948 in Palestine,

1769. as well as Israel's victory

  1770. in the Six-Day War

  1771. and regaining control

  1772. of the Sinai Peninsula

  1773. and, most importantly,

  1774. city of Jerusalem,

  1775. they believe that

  1776. these are literal

  1777. fulfillments

  1778. of Old Testament prophecy.

  1779. They also believe

  1780. that a literal

  1781. physical temple

  1782. will eventually

  1783. be rebuilt

  1784. on Mount Zion

  1785. where currently

1786. the Dome of the Rock,

  1787. the Islamic mosque, sits.

  1788. So in other words,

  1789. dispensational premill

  1790. leads Christians

  1791. to see the nation

  1792. of Israel

  1793. as a fulfillment

  1794. of biblical prophecy

  1795. and therefore support

1796. Israel as a political entity.

  1797. Now, please don't hear

  1798. what I'm not saying.

  1799. I'm not saying

  1800. that God doesn't have

  1801. any future plans

  1802. for the Jewish people.

  1803. I think he does,

  1804. according to Romans 11, 25 to 26.

1805. I think there will be

1806. a softening of the hearts

  1807. of the Jewish people

  1808. and many of them

  1809. will come to faith,

1810. saving faith in Jesus Christ

  1811. in the end times.

1812. I love the Jewish people.

1813. We have some Messianic Jews

  1814. in our church.

1815. I love the Jewish people

1816. even if for no other reason

  1817. than the fact

  1818. that my King

1819. and my Savior is Jewish.

  1820. If Jesus weren't born

  1821. among the Jews,

  1822. then I would still

1823. be condemned in my sin

1824. for salvation is from the Jews,

  1825. Jesus said in John 4, 22.

1826. And so this is not my,

1827. I'm not trying to share

  1828. a political opinion

  1829. on what's going on

  1830. with Israel and Palestine.

  1831. I'm very supportive

  1832. of the Jewish people

1833. and love the Jewish people.

  1834. However, with that said,

  1835. the state of Israel

  1836. is not a fulfillment

1837. of the promises of God

  1838. to his people.

1839. The church of Jesus Christ

  1840. is the fulfillment

  1841. of God's promises

  1842. to his people.

1843. So the true temple of God

  1844. is not one

1845. that will be physically rebuilt

  1846. on Mount Zion.

1847. It is the people of God

  1848. who are indwelled

  1849. by the Holy Spirit.

  1850. That's why Paul writes

  1851. about how we are

1852. the temple of the Holy Spirit.

  1853. So the Jews

  1854. are not our brothers

  1855. and sisters

1856. in the family of God.

  1857. The Messianic Jews are.

1858. And the Palestinian Christians are.

  1859. They are our brothers

  1860. and sisters in Christ.

  1861. You guys understand

  1862. what I'm saying?

1863. So it has significant implications

  1864. for how we understand

  1865. what's going on

  1866. in the world today.

  1867. People who subscribe,

1868. so I'm going to go

  1869. to Postmill now,

  1870. people who subscribe

  1871. to Postmillennialism

  1872. argue that Christ's

  1873. second coming

1874. will be after the millennium.

1875. That's why it says post,

  1876. which means after.

  1877. So Postmillennialists

  1878. believe that Christ

  1879. will return

  1880. after the millennium.

  1881. Generally,

  1882. some people believe

  1883. that the millennium

  1884. is already happening,

  1885. and others believe

  1886. that there will be

  1887. an amazing spread

  1888. of the gospel

  1889. and an infiltration

  1890. of the values

  1891. of the kingdom

  1892. and scriptural principles

  1893. at all levels

  1894. of society,

1895. and then a true millennium

  1896. where there's peace

  1897. and harmony

  1898. and faithfulness

  1899. to God all around

  1900. will take place

  1901. later on,

  1902. closer to the end.

1903. That's what some people believe.

  1904. And Postmill

  1905. believe that there

  1906. will eventually be

  1907. a pervasive influence

  1908. of the gospel

  1909. at all levels

  1910. of human society

  1911. and government

  1912. before Christ returns.

  1913. They often cite

  1914. Habakkuk 2.14

  1915. and Isaiah 11.9

  1916. saying that the earth

  1917. will be filled

  1918. with the knowledge

  1919. of the Lord,

  1920. glory of the Lord

  1921. as the waters

  1922. cover the sea.

  1923. They believe

  1924. that the Great Commission

  1925. teaches that

  1926. the Great Commission

  1927. anticipates a time

  1928. when most people

  1929. in the world

  1930. will become Christians.

  1931. That's what they believe.

  1932. Because Matthew 24.14

  1933. tells us that

1934. the gospel of the kingdom

  1935. will be proclaimed

  1936. throughout the whole world

  1937. as a testimony

  1938. to all nations,

  1939. and then the end

  1940. will come.

  1941. Postmails think

  1942. that before Christ's

  1943. second coming,

  1944. there will be

  1945. an unprecedented spread

  1946. and acceptance

  1947. of the gospel

1948. and the most of the world

  1949. will be converted

  1950. to Christianity.

  1951. However,

1952. that verse does not say

  1953. that the gospel

  1954. of the kingdom

  1955. will be accepted

  1956. throughout the whole world.

  1957. It says that

1958. the gospel of the kingdom

  1959. will be proclaimed

  1960. throughout the whole world.

  1961. In fact,

  1962. in the immediately

  1963. preceding verses,

  1964. Matthew 24.9-13,

  1965. Jesus prophesies

  1966. that Christians

  1967. will be delivered

  1968. up to tribulation

  1969. and put to death

  1970. and be hated

  1971. by all nations

  1972. for Christ's name's sake

  1973. and that many

  1974. will fall away

  1975. and betray one another

  1976. and that many

  1977. false prophets

  1978. will arise

  1979. and lead many astray.

  1980. Jesus continues,

  1981. because lawlessness

  1982. will be increased,

  1983. the love of many

  1984. will grow cold,

  1985. but the one

1986. who endures to the end

  1987. will be saved.

  1988. Before the end

  1989. of the world

  1990. and the second coming

  1991. of Christ,

  1992. lawlessness

  1993. will not decrease,

  1994. it will increase.

1995. and the love of God

  1996. will not grow hot,

  1997. it will grow cold

  1998. among many.

  1999. But the one

2000. who endures to the end

  2001. will be saved.

  2002. Matthew 7,

  2003. Jesus teaches very clearly

  2004. that many enter

  2005. by the wide gate

  2006. and the easy way

  2007. that leads to destruction,

2008. but that only a few

2009. enter by a narrow gate

  2010. and a hard way

  2011. that leads to life.

2012. And speaking of his return

  2013. in Luke 18.8,

  2014. Jesus asks

  2015. a rhetorical question.

2016. When the Son of Man comes,

  2017. will he find faith

  2018. on the earth?

  2019. The implied answer

  2020. is no.

  2021. He will not find

  2022. faith on the earth.

  2023. So today,

  2024. there has been

  2025. a minor resurgence

  2026. of postmillennialism

  2027. due to theologians

  2028. like R.J. Rushdooney,

  2029. who's passed now,

  2030. but he's considered

  2031. the father of Christian

  2032. reconstructionism.

2033. And he was the inspiration

  2034. of the modern

  2035. homeschooling movement.

  2036. I don't have anything

  2037. against homeschooling.

  2038. I've homeschooled

  2039. my kids before,

  2040. but it did come

  2041. from this postmill.

  2042. It was inspired

  2043. a postmill mindset.

  2044. The most prominent

  2045. proponent of postmill

  2046. nowadays is probably

  2047. Pastor Douglas Wilson,

  2048. who is highly influential

  2049. among the ranks

  2050. of Christian nationalists.

  2051. He is a pastor

  2052. who did an interview

  2053. with Tucker Carlson

  2054. on Christian nationalism.

  2055. And the Christian

  2056. book publisher

  2057. he started

  2058. Canon Press

  2059. steadily pushes out

  2060. books that espouse

  2061. postmillennialism,

  2062. including The Case

  2063. for Christian Nationalism

  2064. by Stephen Wolf.

  2065. The allure

  2066. of postmillennialism

  2067. is that it focuses

  2068. our attention

  2069. on the world

  2070. here and now

  2071. rather than

2072. on the world to come.

  2073. It promises victory

  2074. for Christians

  2075. and about ushering in

  2076. an age of godliness.

  2077. However,

  2078. as Pastor Jeremy Sexton

  2079. notes in his

  2080. D'Amelios article

  2081. on postmillennialism,

  2082. a biblical critique,

  2083. he writes,

  2084. postmillennialism's

  2085. disworldly conception

  2086. of Christ's kingdom

  2087. lays the theological

  2088. and spiritual seedbed

  2089. for a culture warriorism

  2090. characterized by

  2091. carnal warfare

  2092. and worldly stratagems.

2093. If you look at Christians

  2094. who are the most

  2095. strident political activists

  2096. in the U.S. today,

  2097. many of them

  2098. are postmills.

  2099. But we must remember

  2100. what Jesus said

  2101. in John 18, 36.

  2102. My kingdom is not

  2103. of this world.

  2104. If my kingdom

  2105. were of this world,

  2106. my servants

  2107. would have been fighting

  2108. that I might not

  2109. be delivered over

  2110. to the Jews.

  2111. But my kingdom

2112. is not from the world.

  2113. And according to

  2114. Revelation 11, 15,

2115. the kingdom of the world

  2116. becomes the kingdom

  2117. of our Lord

  2118. and of His Christ

  2119. when?

  2120. Not when we

  2121. Christianize the world,

  2122. but when Christ returns

  2123. in His second coming.

  2124. Now,

  2125. this doesn't mean

  2126. that we stop

  2127. loving our neighbors

  2128. or stop doing good

  2129. to everyone

  2130. as the Bible

  2131. commends us to do.

  2132. Political involvement

  2133. can be a form

  2134. of loving our neighbor

  2135. and doing good

  2136. to our neighbors.

  2137. Moreover,

  2138. we should continue

2139. to pray the Lord's prayer,

  2140. your kingdom come,

  2141. your will be done

  2142. on earth

2143. as it is in heaven.

  2144. We pray for that

2145. and we should seek that

  2146. and strive to see

  2147. the will of God

  2148. done on earth

2149. as it is in heaven.

  2150. So I'm not denying

  2151. these things.

2152. But we should go about

  2153. doing good works

  2154. and loving our neighbors

  2155. with our ultimate hope

  2156. in the return

  2157. of our king

  2158. rather than

  2159. in the election

  2160. of your preferred president.

  2161. Do you guys see

  2162. what I'm saying?

  2163. If we see it

  2164. as our primary duty

  2165. to bring about

  2166. the millennial kingdom,

  2167. then we're going

  2168. to be prone

  2169. to taking things

  2170. into our own hands

  2171. and we're going

  2172. to value success

  2173. and win

  2174. in the culture

  2175. over faithfulness.

  2176. Next is

  2177. amillennialism.

  2178. A is an alpha

  2179. privative.

  2180. It's a prefix

  2181. that negates.

  2182. For example,

  2183. if you say

  2184. that you're an atheist

  2185. and you're not a theist,

  2186. you don't believe

  2187. in God.

  2188. So amillennialism

  2189. means no millennium

  2190. or at least

  2191. no literal millennium.

  2192. It's not

  2193. exactly an accurate term

  2194. because amillennialists

  2195. do not deny

2196. that there is a millennium

2197. because it's in the Bible.

  2198. You have to believe

  2199. the millennium.

  2200. It's in the Bible.

  2201. You just disagree

2202. on what it looks like.

  2203. So amillennialists

  2204. believe that the millennium

  2205. is happening right now.

  2206. The entire church age

  2207. between the first coming

  2208. and the second coming

  2209. of Christ

  2210. is the figurative millennium

  2211. is the way

  2212. amillennials believe it.

  2213. So some people

  2214. call it instead

  2215. inaugurated millennium.

  2216. We might call it

  2217. inmillennialism

  2218. because in

  2219. is the prefix

  2220. that means now

  2221. or present

  2222. or in.

  2223. And so if that

  2224. ever catches on

  2225. that was coined here

  2226. so you heard it

  2227. here first.

  2228. It's not going

  2229. to catch on.

  2230. Like Postmill

  2231. and Amill

  2232. like Postmill

  2233. Amill also says

  2234. that the devil

  2235. is presently

  2236. imprisoned in the abyss

  2237. but they believe

  2238. that this binding

  2239. is more limited

  2240. than the way

  2241. Postmill's understand it.

  2242. And so even though

  2243. there will be

  2244. a long period

  2245. during which

  2246. the gospel will spread

  2247. bringing about

  2248. spiritual flourishing

  2249. throughout the world

  2250. they believe

  2251. Amill's believe

  2252. that the gospel

  2253. influence will not

  2254. penetrate all levels

  2255. of society

  2256. and human government.

  2257. So in a sense

  2258. this is the way

2259. Paul, one of our elders

  2260. described it

  2261. that Amill

  2262. is a more cynical

  2263. version of Postmill.

  2264. They're very similar.

  2265. I think this is

  2266. the next most

  2267. plausible interpretation

  2268. of Revelation 21-6

  2269. after historic

  2270. premillennialism

  2271. and there's a number

  2272. of very strong arguments

  2273. that I'm going to

  2274. share with you

  2275. next week

  2276. about that support

  2277. Amillennialism.

  2278. And Amillennialism

  2279. I think understandably

  2280. for this reason

  2281. like historic

  2282. premillennialism

  2283. has strong representation

  2284. among the church fathers

  2285. including Augustine

  2286. one of my favorites

  2287. Origen

  2288. Dionysius of Alexandria

  2289. Eusebius of Caesarea

  2290. Epiphanius of Salamis

  2291. Ephraim the Syrian

  2292. and Theodoret of Cyrus

2293. another one of my favorites.

  2294. And so

  2295. I think that's why

  2296. I think Amill

2297. if you guys walk away

  2298. either Amill

  2299. or historic premillennial

  2300. I think I'll be pretty happy.

  2301. And the most prominent

  2302. modern proponents of Amill

  2303. are G.K. Beale

  2304. and Sam Storms.

  2305. You guys have probably

  2306. heard those names before.

  2307. Now which millennium view

  2308. you hold

  2309. is not essential

  2310. to the gospel

  2311. nor urgent

  2312. for our life

  2313. and doctrine

  2314. but it is consequential

  2315. as we've seen.

  2316. And all the views

  2317. that I have mentioned

  2318. do fall within

  2319. the pale of orthodoxy.

  2320. orthodoxy.

2321. But you should also be aware

  2322. that difficult passages

  2323. like this

  2324. and difficult books

  2325. like Revelation

  2326. are easy to twist

  2327. to our own purposes

  2328. and many cults

  2329. throughout the ages

  2330. have done that.

2331. If you look at cults

  2332. and study

  2333. what they teach

  2334. many of them

  2335. their defining texts

  2336. are from Revelation.

  2337. For example

  2338. within the last year

2339. we have had two people

  2340. visit our church

  2341. both of whom

  2342. were recently involved

  2343. in a cult

  2344. that twisted Revelation

  2345. into various

  2346. heretical beliefs

  2347. including claiming

  2348. that their respective

  2349. founders are the

  2350. second coming

  2351. of Jesus Christ.

  2352. So Shincheonji

  2353. Church of Jesus

  2354. it's a Korean cult

  2355. we had one person

  2356. come who was involved

  2357. in that before

  2358. known as the Temple

  2359. of the Tabernacle

  2360. of the Testimony

  2361. as well as Mormonism

  2362. also known as

2363. the Church of Jesus Christ

  2364. of Latter-day Saints

  2365. both claim

  2366. that their founders

  2367. are the only people

  2368. who are capable

  2369. of deciphering

  2370. the symbols of Revelation

  2371. and making it known

2372. to the followers of God.

  2373. So beware.

  2374. In 2 Peter 3

  2375. 16-17

  2376. Peter speaks

  2377. of the letters

2378. written by the Apostle Paul

  2379. in this manner.

  2380. There are some things

  2381. in them

2382. that are hard to understand

  2383. which the ignorant

  2384. and unstable

2385. twist to their own destruction

  2386. as they do

  2387. the other scriptures.

  2388. You therefore

  2389. beloved

  2390. knowing this beforehand

  2391. take care

  2392. that you are not

  2393. carried away

  2394. with the error

  2395. of lawless people

  2396. and lose

  2397. your own stability.

  2398. Not only does

  2399. this verse reveal

  2400. the apostolic

  2401. self-awareness

  2402. that the New Testament

  2403. apostles were writing

  2404. authoritative scripture

  2405. it also comforts us

  2406. by acknowledging

  2407. that some parts

  2408. of scripture

  2409. like some of the

  2410. letters of Paul

  2411. and like the book

  2412. of Revelation

  2413. are indeed hard

  2414. to understand.

  2415. So that's okay.

  2416. This calls for

  2417. extra vigilance

  2418. and extra care

  2419. in interpreting

  2420. the book of Revelation

  2421. and difficult passages

  2422. like chapter 20.

  2423. We must be

  2424. like the noble

  2425. Bereans

  2426. of Acts 17-11

  2427. who received

  2428. the word

  2429. with all eagerness

  2430. examining the scripture

  2431. daily to see

  2432. if these things

  2433. were so.

  2434. Right?

  2435. Andrew and Ed

  2436. and I spend

  2437. scores of hours

  2438. pouring over

  2439. the biblical text

  2440. every time

  2441. before we preach

  2442. a sermon.

2443. Why do we do that?

  2444. Even really difficult passages

  2445. why do we

2446. why do we do that?

  2447. Why am I

  2448. why don't I just

  2449. skip this?

  2450. That's what a lot

  2451. of people do

  2452. when they preach

  2453. Revelation.

  2454. It's not because

  2455. we just

  2456. I don't know

  2457. want to know

  2458. or know something

  2459. and teach something

  2460. like if we just

  2461. like teaching

  2462. and hearing our voices

  2463. we could do

2464. a lot of other jobs.

  2465. It's because

  2466. it's God's word.

  2467. It's because

  2468. if you have

  2469. labored over

  2470. problem sets

  2471. and poured over

  2472. difficult books

2473. that you have to read

  2474. for your job

  2475. or for your school

  2476. and if you have

  2477. done that

  2478. why would we not

  2479. do that

  2480. with the very

  2481. word of God?

  2482. He is the king

  2483. of kings

  2484. and lord of lords.

  2485. He's the creator

  2486. of all the earth.

  2487. Why would we not

  2488. pour over every word

2489. that he has said to us?

  2490. If you received

  2491. a love letter

  2492. from the love

  2493. of your life

  2494. would you not

  2495. cherish it

  2496. and read every word

  2497. and memorize it

  2498. and read it again

  2499. and smile over it

  2500. as you're reading it?

  2501. Why do we not

  2502. do that with

  2503. the word of God

  2504. in which God

  2505. speaks to us?

  2506. Communicates his love

  2507. for us?

  2508. His salvation plan

  2509. to us?

2510. That's why we do this.

2511. Not so that we can

  2512. get into an argument

  2513. with somebody about it.

  2514. So let's be a people

  2515. who search the scriptures

  2516. with diligence

  2517. in humble faith

  2518. asking God

  2519. to grant us understanding

  2520. and let us engage

  2521. in careful

  2522. and responsible

  2523. theological triaging

  2524. relating to one another

  2525. and engaging

  2526. with different

  2527. theological positions

  2528. on tertiary matters

  2529. with appropriate

  2530. humility

  2531. and charity.

  2532. Let's pray together.

  2533. Father,

  2534. we thank you

  2535. for the gift

  2536. of your word.

  2537. Lord,

  2538. we thank you

  2539. that your word

  2540. teaches us

  2541. so that we might

  2542. know your will

  2543. and discern your good

  2544. and acceptable

  2545. and perfect will

  2546. and that we might

  2547. be transformed

  2548. by the renewal

  2549. of our mind.

  2550. We thank you

  2551. for that,

  2552. Lord.

  2553. But we thank you

  2554. also that through

  2555. passages that are

  2556. hard to understand,

  2557. you also humble us.

  2558. So, Lord,

2559. help us to be a church

  2560. that combines

  2561. both clarity

  2562. and confidence

  2563. and humility

  2564. and charity

  2565. in the way

  2566. we hold

  2567. your word.

  2568. Grow us

  2569. in the way

  2570. we cherish

  2571. your word

  2572. and believe

  2573. your word

  2574. and study

  2575. your word.

  2576. Make us like

  2577. the noble Bereans,

  2578. Lord,

  2579. that we might honor

2580. you in all of our lives.

  2581. In Jesus' name

  2582. we pray.

  2583. Amen.
