  1. Let's turn to Revelation chapter 20.

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  2. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Sean,

  3. I'm one of the pastors of Trinity Cambridge Church.

  4. If you don't have a Bible, please raise your hand.

  5. We'd love to bring you a copy so that you can use it.

  6. You can actually take it home with you.

  7. We've been going through Revelation for most of this year, I believe,

  8. and we are right now in Revelation 20.

  9. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  10. Father, we need your help to understand this passage.

  11. It's the Word that you spoke.

  12. The Word that points us to the person and work of your Son, Jesus Christ.

  13. The Word that is illuminated to our hearts by your Holy Spirit.

  14. So, Lord, help us.

  15. Fill us with a grand vision of your glory and power and sovereignty.

  16. And fill us with hope and perseverance

  17. as we wait for the return of our King, Jesus.

  18. It's in His precious name we pray.

  19. Amen.

  20. If you are able, please stand and join me for the reading of God's Word

  21. from Revelation 20, verses 1 to 6.

    Revelation 20:1–6

  22. Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven,

  23. holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit

  24. and a great chain.

  25. And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent,

  26. who is the devil and Satan,

  27. and bound him for a thousand years,

  28. and threw him into the pit,

  29. and shut it and sealed it over him,

  30. so that he might not deceive the nations any longer,

  31. until the thousand years were ended.

  32. After that, he must be released for a little while.

  33. Then I saw thrones,

  34. and seated on them were those

  35. to whom the authority to judge was committed.

  36. Also I saw the souls of those

  37. who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus

  38. and for the Word of God,

  39. and those who had not worshipped the beast or its image,

  40. and had not received its mark on their foreheads

  41. and their hands.

  42. They came to life and reigned with Christ

  43. for a thousand years.

  44. The rest of the dead did not come to life

  45. until the thousand years were ended.

  46. This is the first resurrection.

  47. Blessed and holy is the one

  48. who shares in the first resurrection.

  49. Over such, the second death has no power.

  50. But they will be priests of God and of Christ,

  51. and they will reign with him for a thousand years.

  52. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  53. You may be seated.

  54. As I mentioned last week,

  55. this is one of the most difficult passages,

  56. and one of the most hotly debated passages

  57. in the book of Revelation.

  58. And so I took last Sunday

  59. to just kind of give you all the background for this.

  60. So if you missed that,

  61. I encourage you to go and listen to that.

  62. It'll help you to understand this week's sermon.

  63. In politics, there is an expression called

  64. a lame duck.

  65. And it refers to a politician

  66. who is on his way out,

  67. whether it's due to electoral losses

  68. or something else.

  69. It's already been determined

  70. that he, this politician,

  71. will be superseded by a different politician

  72. in the near future.

  73. And Revelation 20, 1 to 6,

  74. reminds us that Satan is a lame duck.

  75. And that his regime is about to be toppled

  76. on this earth.

  77. But that Christ is the true king

  78. who will soon establish his millennial reign on earth.

  79. And so we're going to talk first

  80. about the jailing of Satan during the thousand years.

  81. And then secondly, we'll talk about the reign of Christ

  82. during the thousand years.

  83. He says in verse 1,

  84. Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven,

  85. holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit

  86. and a great chain.

  87. And so I don't normally use the slides this often,

  88. but because it's a difficult passage to follow,

  89. I'm going to be using the slides quite a bit

  90. so you guys can keep track.

  91. And so we're addressing the question of the abyss here.

  92. So this is not the first time

  93. we've seen an angel holding the key

  94. to the bottomless pit.

  95. We saw it already in chapter 9, verses 1 to 2,

  96. where an angel that had fallen from heaven to earth,

  97. a fallen angel,

  98. received the key to the bottomless pit

  99. and then opened it

  100. and then released a horde of demonic locusts.

  101. So that fallen angel's name was Abaddon

  102. or Apollyon in Greek,

  103. which both mean destroyer.

  104. So this is most likely in chapter 9

  105. that was most likely referenced to Satan,

  106. whom we were told in Revelation 12

  107. was cast down, thrown down from heaven to earth

  108. along with his angels.

  109. The bottomless pit in Greek is abousos,

  110. which is where we get the English word abyss.

  111. It is the realm of demons.

  112. This is not the eternal fire

  113. prepared for the devil and his angels

  114. that Jesus mentions in Matthew 25, 41,

  115. which is the lake of fire mentioned in Revelation 20,

  116. where the devil, the beast, and the false prophet,

  117. and as well as all those who follow them

  118. will all be in the end ultimately cast into.

  119. Rather, this abyss,

  120. in contrast from the lake of fire,

  121. the abyss is the place of temporary incarceration

  122. in which evil spirits can be imprisoned

  123. and from which they can be released.

  124. So in Luke 8, 30, 31, for example,

  125. many demons named Legion

  126. beg Jesus not to command them

  127. to depart into the abyss

  128. or to the bottomless pit.

  129. So the difference, however,

  130. between Revelation 9 and Revelation 20

  131. is that this time it's not a fallen angel

  132. that holds the key to the bottomless pit.

  133. It's an angel coming down from heaven.

  134. And this angel is not only holding in his hand

  135. the key to the bottomless pit,

  136. he's also holding a great chain,

  137. which must be great

  138. because it's going to be used

  139. to bind the great dragon.

  140. And it says in verses 2 to 3

  141. that he sees the dragon,

  142. that ancient serpent,

  143. who is the devil and Satan,

  144. and bound him for a thousand years

  145. and threw him into the pit

  146. and shut it and sealed it over him

  147. so that he might not deceive the nations any longer

  148. until the thousand years were ended.

  149. After that, he must be released

  150. for a little while.

  151. Can you guys hear me okay?

  152. Am I ringing?

  153. No? Okay.

  154. The angel of the bottomless pit

  155. is now himself seized and bound

  156. and locked up in that bottomless pit.

  157. Before he had the key to it,

  158. now he's bound and it's like he's under house arrest.

  159. And this highlights the sovereignty of God.

  160. In 9.1, this angel was given,

  161. if you remember,

  162. was given the key to the bottomless pit.

  163. And where did he get the key from?

  164. Who gave him this key?

  165. This is the divine passive construction.

  166. He says that he was given the key.

  167. It's a divine passive construction

  168. that is trying to indicate

  169. that while God is never directly behind evil,

  170. that he's nonetheless completely sovereign over evil.

  171. So we were told in Revelation 1, 17 to 18,

  172. who ultimately holds this key

  173. to death and Hades and even to the abyss.

  174. It's Jesus said,

  175. fear not, I am the first and the last

  176. and the living one.

  177. I died and behold,

  178. I am alive forevermore.

  179. And I have the keys of death and Hades.

  180. So as the resurrected Lord,

  181. Jesus holds the key of death and Hades.

  182. And so even though Satan is king

  183. over his demonic minions,

  184. in relation to King Jesus,

  185. he is nothing more than a lackey,

  186. a slave, a prison warden.

  187. Even this powerful angel

  188. who can seize the great dragon

  189. and bind him and throw him into the prison,

  190. he receives the key ultimately,

  191. his authority from Christ,

  192. who is the king of kings and the Lord of lords.

  193. And so Satan is locked up

  194. in this bottomless pit in verse one,

  195. and then he's released again in verse seven,

  196. and only to be captured again

  197. and then thrown into his final destiny,

  198. which is the lake of fire or hell,

  199. in verse 10.

  200. So this vaunted great dragon

  201. that whose fearsome description

  202. we saw in chapter 12

  203. is treated,

  204. it's tossed around like a floppy rag doll

  205. in this passage.

  206. And if Christ can make easy work

  207. of Satan, our greatest enemy,

  208. even the most vicious persecutors

  209. of the church,

  210. even the most powerful dictators

  211. in the world,

  212. even the most intractable diseases

  213. in our lives,

  214. and the tragic disasters

  215. throughout the world,

  216. whatever it might be,

  217. no matter the highs and lows of life

  218. and the unexpected turns of life,

  219. we can rest assured

  220. that God Almighty is sovereign.

  221. Now what exactly is the millennium?

  222. Is it a literal thousand years?

  223. I don't think the thousand years

  224. is a literal thousand years

  225. because nearly all of the numbers

  226. that we have seen so far

  227. in the book of Revelation

  228. have had symbolic significance.

  229. A thousand years

  230. is an often used literary figure

  231. for a long time.

  232. So for example,

  233. it says in Psalm 90 verse four,

  234. for a thousand years in your sight

  235. are but as yesterday

  236. when it is past.

  237. First Chronicles 16.15,

  238. David exhorts the Israelites

  239. to remember God's covenant forever.

  240. The word that he commanded

  241. for a thousand generations.

  242. So a thousand generations

  243. is parallel poetically to forever

  244. because it represents

  245. a really long time.

  246. So I don't think it's referring

  247. to a literal thousand generations

  248. or a thousand years here

  249. but to an indefinitely

  250. long period of time.

  251. And the multiples of thousands

  252. have already been used symbolically

  253. in the book of Revelation

  254. up to this point.

  255. And because post-millennialists

  256. and amillennialists

  257. and if you don't know

  258. what I'm talking about,

  259. I'm sorry.

  260. I had to listen to the sermon last week.

  261. Post-millennialists believe

  262. that Jesus returns

  263. after the millennium

  264. and amillennialists believe

  265. that we're already in the millennium

  266. and there will be no future millennium.

  267. They think that Christ's second coming

  268. is after the millennium

  269. and for that reason,

  270. they argue that Revelation 21 to 6

  271. must be going back in time

  272. to describe the first coming of Jesus

  273. even though it comes after chapter 19

  274. which describes the second coming of Jesus.

  275. So this is a possibility

  276. because Revelation does employ

  277. progressive parallelism

  278. and I've talked to you about this.

  279. For example,

  280. how we saw the seven seals

  281. and the seven trumpets

  282. and the seven bowls of judgments

  283. are not occurring in linear

  284. chronological succession

  285. but actually are recapitulations

  286. or repeats

  287. and different angles

  288. of the same judgments

  289. in a parallel

  290. but also progressive way.

  291. And so it is a possibility

  292. that this is doing the same thing

  293. in Revelation 21 to 6.

  294. However,

  295. I don't think

  296. that verses 1 to 6

  297. is an instance of that

  298. because there are

  299. chronological markers

  300. in the text

  301. that suggest that

  302. the judgment of Babylon

  303. and of the beast

  304. and false prophet

  305. and finally the dragon

  306. happen in sequence.

  307. In 1920

  308. when Christ,

  309. the king,

  310. returns on his white horse

  311. both the beast

  312. and the false prophet

  313. are captured

  314. and then thrown

  315. into the lake of fire

  316. that burns with sulfur.

  317. Then having dealt

  318. with the beast

  319. in 20 verses 2 to 3

  320. the attention is paid

  321. to the dragon.

  322. The dragon is bound

  323. and locked up in prison

  324. so that he might not deceive

  325. the nations any longer

  326. and until the thousand years

  327. were ended.

  328. After that

  329. he must be released

  330. for a little while

  331. so until after

  332. these are chronological markers.

  333. That means there was

  334. a period of time

  335. when Satan was deceiving

  336. the nations

  337. and then there's a period

  338. of time

  339. during the millennium

  340. when he cannot deceive

  341. the nations.

  342. So and after that

  343. he is released again

  344. as we see in verse 7 and 8

  345. and when the thousand years

  346. are ended

  347. Satan will be released

  348. from his prison

  349. and will come out

  350. to deceive the nations.

  351. It's clearly happening

  352. in sequence.

  353. And it's after

  354. this final period

  355. of deception

  356. of the nations

  357. by the dragon

  358. after his release

  359. from the dungeon

  360. in Revelation 20 verse 10

    Revelation 20:10

  361. he says that

  362. the devil

  363. who had deceived them

  364. was thrown

  365. into the lake

  366. of fire and sulfur

  367. where the beast

  368. and the false prophet

  369. were

  370. and they will be tormented

  371. day and night

  372. forever and ever.

  373. I think that's

  374. the decisive clue.

  375. Verse 10 tells us

  376. that when the devil

  377. is finally thrown

  378. into the lake of fire

  379. the beast

  380. and the false prophet

  381. are already there.

  382. And the only time

  383. Revelation has spoken

  384. of the beast

  385. and the false prophet

  386. being thrown

  387. into the lake of fire

  388. was in chapter 19

  389. verse 20

  390. at the second coming

  391. of Jesus.

  392. So this verse assumes

  393. that the event

  394. of chapter 20

  395. are happening in sequence

  396. after the events

  397. of chapter 19

  398. which describes

  399. the second coming

  400. of Jesus

  401. and his judgment

  402. of the beast.

  403. All that to say

  404. I don't think

  405. 1 to 6

  406. is a recapitulation

  407. I think it's happening

  408. in sequence

  409. which means

  410. the millennium

  411. must occur

  412. after Christ's

  413. second coming.

  414. Now one of the

  415. strongest

  416. amillennial objections

  417. to reading chapters

  418. 19 to 20

  419. sequentially

  420. they don't want

  421. to read it sequentially

  422. is that according

  423. to 19, 11, 20

  424. 11 to 21

  425. Christ has already

  426. vanquished his enemies.

  427. So the great supper

  428. of God

  429. remember when he

  430. offered the flesh

  431. of kings

  432. to the carrion birds

  433. that's already

  434. taken place

  435. in chapter 19.

  436. So well

  437. if Christ

  438. has already

  439. defeated

  440. and punished

  441. the nations

  442. then what

  443. nations

  444. are there

  445. left

  446. for Satan

  447. to deceive

  448. in verse 3?

  449. So the amill argument

  450. is that Satan

  451. being bound

  452. that he might

  453. not deceive

  454. the nations

  455. any longer

  456. cannot be occurring

  457. after the second coming

  458. that is described

  459. in chapter 19

  460. but it must be

  461. going back

  462. to Christ's

  463. first coming.

  464. However

  465. when you look

  466. closely at the text

  467. I don't think

  468. that argument

  469. is as strong

  470. as it initially

  471. seems.

  472. in 1919

  473. it tells us

  474. exactly the identity

  475. of those

  476. who were

  477. being struck

  478. down by Christ

  479. it's the beast

  480. and the false prophet

  481. and the kings

  482. of the earth

  483. with their armies

  484. it's those

  485. among the nations

  486. who follow

  487. the lead

  488. of the beast

  489. and the kings

  490. of the earth

  491. to make war

  492. against Christ

  493. after his return

  494. that are destroyed

  495. by Christ

  496. in chapter 19

  497. not all

  498. of the nations.

  499. in fact

  500. it says

  501. in 1915

  502. from his mouth

  503. comes a sharp sword

  504. with which

  505. to strike down

  506. the nations

  507. and he will

  508. rule them

  509. with a rod

  510. of iron.

  511. Jesus strikes

  512. down the nations

  513. but apparently

  514. there's still

  515. nations left over

  516. whom he will

  517. rule

  518. with the rod

  519. of iron

  520. future tense

  521. as Revelation 12

    Revelation 12:5

  522. verse 5 said

  523. Jesus is the one

  524. who is to rule

  525. all the nations

  526. with the rod

  527. of iron.

  528. Jesus doesn't

  529. rule over

  530. his own people

  531. with a rod

  532. of iron.

  533. He rules

  534. over the nations

  535. with a rod

  536. of iron

  537. and that takes

  538. place during

  539. the millennial

  540. reign

  541. and when Satan

  542. is released

  543. from his prison

  544. after the millennium

  545. in verses 7 and 10

  546. he will come out

  547. to deceive the nations

  548. and gather them

  549. for war against Christ

  550. in the city

  551. of Jerusalem

  552. and it is at that

  553. point that all

  554. the nations

  555. who had opposed

  556. Christ

  557. are finally judged

  558. before the great

  559. white throne

  560. and then thrown

  561. into the lake

  562. of fire.

  563. Now this

  564. understanding

  565. of Revelation 20

  566. makes good sense

  567. in light of

  568. Revelation 2

  569. 26 where Christ

  570. promised

  571. the one who

  572. conquers

  573. and who keeps

  574. my works

  575. until the end

  576. to him I will

  577. give authority

  578. over the nations

  579. and he will

  580. rule them

  581. with a rod

  582. of iron

  583. as when earth

  584. and pots

  585. are broken

  586. in pieces

  587. even as I

  588. myself have

  589. received authority

  590. from my father.

  591. So God's

  592. people who endure

  593. who conquer

  594. and who endure

  595. to the end

  596. faith

  597. are supposed

  598. to at some

  599. point rule

  600. over the nations

  601. with the rod

  602. of iron

  603. joining in

  604. Christ's rule.

  605. When does that

  606. happen in the book

  607. of Revelation?

  608. Are the saints

  609. right now in heaven

  610. reigning over

  611. the nations

  612. with the rod

  613. of iron?

  614. It doesn't seem

  615. that way.

  616. If there is no

  617. millennial reign

  618. after Christ's

  619. second coming

  620. this rule

  621. that was promised

  622. in Revelation

  623. 2 26

  624. never takes place.

  625. So the timeline

  626. I am suggesting

  627. is confirmed

  628. also by

  629. Zechariah 14

  630. which describes

  631. it's a prophecy

  632. of Christ's

  633. return

  634. and the war

  635. that takes place

  636. with the kings

  637. after his return

  638. and it says

  639. in 14 16

  640. that everyone

  641. who survives

  642. of all the nations

  643. shall go up

  644. year after year

  645. to worship

  646. the king

  647. the lord of hosts

  648. and to keep

  649. the feast of boots.

  650. So it sounds

  651. like there are

  652. survivors

  653. after the war

  654. among the nations

  655. and this seems

  656. to be describing

  657. the millennial reign

  658. of Christ.

  659. So then

  660. when is

  661. a thousand years?

  662. I think it's

  663. after Christ's

  664. second coming

  665. which is

  666. I am a historic

  667. pre-millennialist

  668. who believes

  669. that Christ

  670. will return

  671. pre-millennium

  672. before the thousand years.

  673. Now let's turn

  674. to another

  675. interpretive issue

  676. that has bearings

  677. on this question.

  678. By the way

  679. I cut six

  680. single pages

  681. out of my sermon

  682. for this

  683. and so

  684. I'm gonna

  685. just either

  686. I didn't have

  687. a chance

  688. to print it out

  689. but I'll share

  690. that with you

  691. as a PDF form

  692. on our church slack

  693. so if you are

  694. actually familiar

  695. with some of

  696. these arguments

  697. and want to know

  698. how more extensive

  699. interaction with

  700. the Amel positions

  701. I'd encourage you

  702. to read that

  703. for the sake of

  704. not boring you

  705. to death

  706. and also actually

  707. sharing something

  708. that's encouraging

  709. I'm gonna

  710. I abbreviate a lot

  711. of the details

  712. so bear with me

  713. I know this

  714. is kind of hard

  715. to follow.

  716. Where was I?

  717. What does it mean

  718. that Satan is bound?

  719. So Amel and

  720. Postmill people

  721. cite Matthew 12

  722. 28 to 29

  723. as evidence

  724. that the millennium

  725. begins with the

  726. first coming of Christ

  727. and I think that's

  728. actually one of

  729. their strongest

  730. arguments.

  731. In Matthew 12

  732. Jesus is casting

  733. out demons

  734. and his detractors

  735. argue that he's

  736. using the power

  737. of the prince

  738. of demons

  739. the Beelzebul

  740. in order to cast

  741. out these

  742. little demons

  743. demons

  744. but Jesus

  745. exposes their

  746. folly by telling

  747. them well if

  748. Satan casts out

  749. Satan then he is

  750. divided against

  751. himself how then

  752. will his kingdom

  753. stand?

  754. Instead he tells

  755. them that he's

  756. casting out demons

  757. by the spirit of

  758. God and then he

  759. adds this

  760. how can someone

  761. enter a strong

  762. man's house

  763. and plunder

  764. his goods

  765. unless he first

  766. binds the strong

  767. man then indeed

  768. he may plunder

  769. his house.

  770. So that word

  771. bind is the

  772. exact same word

  773. that's used in

  774. Revelation 20

    Revelation 20:2

  775. verse 2

  776. when it says

  777. an angel

  778. bound Satan

  779. for a thousand

  780. years.

  781. So Jesus

  782. has bound

  783. Satan

  784. the strong

  785. man

  786. in his first

  787. coming which

  788. is why he

  789. is able to

  790. plunder his

  791. house and

  792. cast out demons

  793. and bring

  794. salvation to

  795. all nations.

  796. At his death

  797. and resurrection

  798. Jesus defeated

  799. Satan and

  800. secured the

  801. gift of the

  802. spirit for all

  803. of his people

  804. and this is a

  805. fulfillment of

  806. the prophecy

  807. in Psalm 82

  808. when he said

  809. that God

  810. himself will

  811. come to

  812. dispossess

  813. the so-called

  814. gods of

  815. the nations

  816. and inherit

  817. all nations

  818. to himself.

  819. This is why

  820. in the Old

  821. Testament

  822. the movement

  823. of salvation

  824. is centripetal.

  825. It goes

  826. toward the

  827. center

  828. toward the

  829. people of

  830. God

  831. in Jerusalem.

  832. But in

  833. the New

  834. Testament

  835. the movement

  836. of salvation

  837. is centrifugal.

  838. It goes

  839. out from

  840. Jerusalem

  841. to all Judea

  842. and Samaria

  843. and to the

  844. ends of the

  845. earth

  846. to bear

  847. witness to

  848. the nations.

  849. In the Old

  850. Covenant

  851. salvation

  852. was restricted

  853. mostly to

  854. the Jews

  855. though there

  856. were some

  857. Gentiles.

  858. But in the

  859. New Covenant

  860. salvation

  861. comes upon

  862. the Gentiles.

  863. So this is

  864. all true

  865. and biblical

  866. which is why

  867. I think this

  868. is one of

  869. their most

  870. compelling

  871. arguments.

  872. However,

  873. I don't

  874. think Revelation

    Revelation 20:2

  875. 20 verse 2

  876. has in view

  877. that binding

  878. for several

  879. reasons.

  880. First,

  881. it's interesting

  882. that all of

  883. the Synoptic

  884. Gospels,

  885. Matthew,

  886. Mark,

  887. and Luke

  888. contain that

  889. passage about

  890. the binding

  891. of the strong

  892. man.

  893. The only

  894. Gospel that

  895. does not

  896. contain that

  897. passage is

  898. the Gospel

  899. of John

  900. which happens

  901. to be written

  902. by the same

  903. author as

  904. Revelation.

  905. The language

  906. that John

  907. uses to

  908. describe the

  909. defeat of

  910. Satan is

  911. not one of

  912. binding but

  913. of being

  914. cast out.

  915. John 12

  916. 31,

  917. now is the

  918. judgment of

  919. this world,

  920. now will the

  921. ruler of this

  922. world be

  923. cast out.

  924. And where

  925. is Satan

  926. cast out of?

  927. Not out of

  928. this world.

  929. John writes

  930. elsewhere in

  931. 1 John 5

  932. 19,

  933. we know that

  934. we are from

  935. God and the

  936. whole world

  937. lies in the

  938. power of the

  939. evil one.

  940. Does it sound

  941. like he's cast

  942. out of the

  943. world?

  944. 2 Corinthians

  945. 4, 3-4,

  946. and even if the

  947. Gospel is

  948. veiled, it is

  949. veiled to those

  950. who are perishing.

  951. In their case,

  952. the God of

  953. this world has

  954. blinded the

  955. minds of the

  956. unbelievers to

  957. keep them from

  958. seeing the

  959. light of the

  960. Gospel of the

  961. glory of Christ.

  962. Does that sound

  963. like Satan being

  964. cast out of

  965. this world and

  966. being unable to

  967. deceive?

  968. 1 Peter 5, 8

  969. says, be sober

  970. minded, be

  971. watchful.

  972. Your adversary,

  973. the devil, prowls

  974. around like a

  975. roaring lion,

  976. seeking someone

  977. to devour.

  978. Is Satan bound

  979. with chains in

  980. the abyss or

  981. prowling around like

  982. a roaring lion?

  983. Is he no longer

  984. deceiving the

  985. nations or is he

  986. blinding the

  987. minds of the

  988. unbelievers?

  989. What John is

  990. describing in

  991. John 12, 31,

  992. is not Satan being

  993. cast out from

  994. the earth to

  995. the abyss.

  996. No, he's

  997. describing Satan

  998. being cast out

  999. from heaven to

  1000. earth.

  1001. Isn't that what

  1002. Jesus said in

  1003. Luke 10, 18,

  1004. 19?

  1005. I saw Satan

  1006. fall like

  1007. lightning from

  1008. heaven.

  1009. This is what

  1010. we saw described

  1011. in Revelation 12

  1012. when after Jesus'

  1013. death and

  1014. resurrection and

  1015. ascension on

  1016. earth, from

  1017. earth, Satan is

  1018. defeated by

  1019. Archangel Michael

  1020. in heaven and

  1021. it said in

  1022. Revelation 12, 8-9,

  1023. but the dragon

  1024. was defeated and

  1025. there was no

  1026. longer any place

  1027. for them in

  1028. heaven.

  1029. And the great

  1030. dragon was thrown

  1031. down, the ancient

  1032. serpent who is

  1033. called the devil

  1034. and Satan, the

  1035. deceiver of the

  1036. whole world.

  1037. He was thrown

  1038. down to the

  1039. earth and his

  1040. angels were thrown

  1041. down with him.

  1042. That word thrown

  1043. down is a

  1044. variation of the

  1045. same Greek word

  1046. that John used in

  1047. John 12, 31 when

  1048. he said this ruler

  1049. of this world is

  1050. cast out.

  1051. So people who

  1052. claim that

  1053. Revelation 20, 1-6

  1054. is this

  1055. description of the

  1056. first coming of

  1057. Christ argue that

  1058. it's a recapitulation

  1059. or repeat of what

  1060. happened in Revelation

  1061. 12 that I was just

  1062. talking about.

  1063. But there are key

  1064. differences.

  1065. I can highlight that

  1066. for you.

  1067. In 12, 8-9, Satan

  1068. is thrown down to

  1069. the earth from

  1070. heaven.

  1071. But in 20, verse 3,

  1072. Satan is thrown

  1073. down into the

  1074. bottomless pit from

  1075. earth.

  1076. That's why the

  1077. angel in chapter 20,

  1078. verse 1, comes down

  1079. from heaven to

  1080. earth in order to

  1081. seize, bind, and

  1082. imprison Satan.

  1083. In 12, 12-13, 18,

  1084. the result of Satan

  1085. being thrown down

  1086. to the earth, the

  1087. deceiver of the

  1088. whole world, is that

  1089. he becomes furious

  1090. and makes war

  1091. against the saints.

  1092. And then he makes

  1093. the beast and the

  1094. false prophet rise

  1095. forth from the

  1096. abyss and he makes

  1097. them deceive the

  1098. nations.

  1099. He's called the

  1100. deceiver of the

  1101. whole world in

  1102. 12, 9.

  1103. He deceives those

  1104. who dwell on

  1105. earth.

  1106. Through the

  1107. beast and the

  1108. false prophet

  1109. in chapter 13,

  1110. verse 14.

  1111. He deceives the

  1112. nations through

  1113. Babylon sorcery in

  1114. 1823.

  1115. Again and again,

  1116. we're told throughout

  1117. the Revelation that

  1118. in the church age,

  1119. Satan and his

  1120. minions are deceiving

  1121. the nations, which

  1122. is exactly what verse

  1123. 3 tells us Satan

  1124. cannot do while he's

1125. bound in the pit, so

  1126. that he might not

  1127. deceive the nations

  1128. any longer until the

  1129. thousand years

  1130. were ended.

  1131. So which is it?

  1132. Is Satan furious on

  1133. earth, wreaking havoc

  1134. as the deceiver of

  1135. the world with

  1136. authority over the

  1137. nations, or is Satan

  1138. bound and unable to

  1139. deceive the nations?

  1140. The immediate context

  1141. of the book of

  1142. Revelation, which is

  1143. the most important

  1144. biblical context for

  1145. us to consider in

  1146. interpreting this,

  1147. suggests that these

  1148. two chapters are not

  1149. referring to the same

  1150. events, Revelation 12

  1151. and Revelation 20.

  1152. Revelation 12 is

  1153. describing the first

  1154. coming of Christ.

  1155. Revelation 20 is

  1156. describing the second

  1157. coming of Christ.

  1158. In Revelation 9, Satan

1159. was given the key to

  1160. the bottomless pit and

1161. he opened the shaft of

  1162. the bottomless pit to

  1163. release the demonic

  1164. locusts.

  1165. In Revelation 20, Satan

  1166. is locked in this

  1167. bottomless pit.

  1168. These two things cannot

  1169. be referring to the

  1170. same event.

  1171. Revelation 11, 7 and

  1172. 17, 8 says that the

  1173. beast rises from the

  1174. bottomless pit and makes

  1175. war on the saints.

1176. So are they rising from

1177. the bottomless pit or are

  1178. they bound in the

  1179. bottomless pit?

  1180. They're not referring to

  1181. the same events.

1182. So now why does all of

  1183. this matter?

1184. The point of chapter 20

  1185. verses 1 to 3 isn't to

1186. tell us Satan is bound

  1187. and can no longer

  1188. deceive.

1189. So the advance of the

  1190. gospel all over the

  1191. world is unstoppable and

  1192. the triumph of the

  1193. gospel throughout human

  1194. society is inevitable.

  1195. So go boldly and

  1196. change the world.

  1197. The tide has turned,

  1198. momentum is on your

  1199. side.

1200. That's not the point of

  1201. Revelation 20, 1 to 6.

1202. That is the argument of

  1203. the postmillennialists.

  1204. However, the point of

  1205. Revelation 20, 1 to 3 is

  1206. to cultivate Christian

  1207. triumphalism.

  1208. It's intended to cultivate

  1209. Christian hope and

  1210. endurance.

1211. Christ did not send us

1212. out as lions among wolves.

1213. He sent us out as sheep

  1214. among wolves.

1215. to follow in the footsteps

1216. of the lamb who was

  1217. slain by enduring

  1218. suffering and even death

1219. for the sake of Christ.

1220. Right now, Satan is at

  1221. large prowling around

  1222. like a roaring lion.

1223. Right now, he is making

1224. war against the saints and

  1225. conquering us and killing

  1226. us, God's people.

1227. Right now, he is deceiving

  1228. the nations and blinding

  1229. the minds of the

  1230. unbelievers so that they

1231. cannot see the light of the

1232. glory of the gospel of

  1233. Christ.

1234. Don't we all know that

  1235. frustration?

  1236. We've seen it.

1237. But we go bear witness

  1238. anyway.

  1239. Because blessed are you

  1240. when people persecute and

1241. revile you and say all

1242. kinds of false things about

  1243. you on the economy.

1244. Because in the same way

  1245. they persecuted the

  1246. prophets who were before

  1247. you.

1248. For rejoice and be glad,

1249. for your reward is great

  1250. in heaven.

  1251. Don't lose hope.

  1252. Persevere.

1253. Because Satan is a lame

1254. duck whose regime is about

  1255. to be toppled.

  1256. His days are numbered.

1257. The timer is ticking down.

  1258. Christ is coming soon.

  1259. So pledge your allegiance,

1260. loyalty to Christ the King

1261. who will reign during the

  1262. millennium and forevermore.

  1263. That's the point of

  1264. Revelation 20 verses 1 to 3.

    Revelation 20:1–3

1265. Now that we've looked at

1266. the jailing of Satan during

  1267. the thousand years, let's

1268. look at the reign of Christ

  1269. during the thousand years

  1270. in verses 4 to 6.

1271. He says in verse 4,

1272. Then I saw thrones, and

1273. seated on them were those

1274. to whom the authority to

  1275. judge was committed.

1276. Also I saw the souls of

1277. those who had been beheaded

1278. for the testimony of Jesus

1279. and for the word of God,

1280. and those who had not

  1281. worshipped the beast or

1282. its image and had not

1283. received its mark on their

  1284. foreheads or their hands.

1285. They came to life and

1286. reigned with Christ for a

  1287. thousand years.

  1288. People who subscribe to

  1289. amillennialism argue that

1290. these thrones are a picture

  1291. of deceased saints reigning

  1292. with Christ in heaven,

1293. like the 24 thrones and the

1294. 24 elders that were in

1295. heaven around the throne of

1296. God that we saw in

  1297. Revelation 4 and 11.

  1298. However, I think it's more

1299. likely that John is seeing

  1300. those heavenly thrones now

  1301. appearing on earth because

1302. verse 1 already narrated the

1303. transition of the scene from

  1304. heaven to earth.

1305. He saw an angel coming down

1306. from heaven, which means the

1307. angel is on earth now.

  1308. And that means the

  1309. subsequent events described

  1310. in verses 1 to 6 are

1311. happening on earth and not

  1312. in heaven.

1313. He said in verse 3 that the

1314. purpose of the jailing of

1315. Satan for a thousand years

1316. was so that he might not

  1317. deceive the nations any

  1318. longer.

1319. And where are these nations?

1320. There are no nations in

1321. heaven that do not yet know

  1322. God.

1323. There are no nations to be

  1324. deceived in heaven.

  1325. The events of Revelation

1326. verse 6 are happening on

  1327. earth.

1328. These thrones and those who

1329. are seated on them with the

1330. authority to judge might be

  1331. the 24 elders, representatives

1332. of the 12 tribes of Israel

1333. and the 12 apostles of the

1334. Lamb, since we've seen them

  1335. sitting on thrones before.

1336. And if that is the case,

1337. this is the fulfillment of

  1338. Jesus' promise to his

  1339. apostles in Matthew 19, 28.

1340. In the new world, when the

1341. Son of Man will sit on his

1342. glorious throne, you who have

1343. followed me will also sit on

  1344. 12 thrones, judging the 12

  1345. tribes of Israel.

1346. The Greek word translated the

1347. new world is rendered by the

1348. NIV and the CSB as the

  1349. renewal of all things.

1350. This is not speaking of the

  1351. apostles presently reigning in

1352. Christ in heaven while our

1353. fallen world groans under the

1354. weight, in pains of child

1355. birth, under the weight of

  1356. sin.

1357. It's speaking of the time when

1358. the apostles will reign over and

1359. judge the world at the time of

1360. Christ's return, at the renewal

1361. rule of all things in the new

  1362. world.

1363. But it's not only the 24 elders

1364. who will be ruling and judging

  1365. the world.

1366. In addition to those who are

1367. seated on the thrones, it says

  1368. in verse 4,

1369. also I saw the souls of those

1370. who had been beheaded for the

1371. testimony of Jesus and for the

1372. word of God, and those who had

1373. not worshipped the beast or its

1374. image and had not received this

1375. mark on their foreheads or their

  1376. hands.

1377. They came to life and reign with

1378. Christ for a thousand years.

1379. So these are the souls of those

1380. who had been beheaded for

  1381. bearing witness to Jesus.

1382. But not only the martyrs, not

1383. only those who were killed for

1384. their faith, but also all those

1385. who did not bow down to the

  1386. beast and its image.

  1387. All believers, that means.

1388. Not only the apostles will get to

1389. partake in the reigning and

1390. judging of Christ in the

  1391. millennial kingdom.

1392. I think this is what 1 Corinthians

  1393. 6, 2 spoke of.

1394. Do you not know that the saints

  1395. will judge the world?

1396. This is a fulfillment of

  1397. Revelation 5, 9 to 10, that

1398. Jesus had made, that Jesus

1399. made his people a kingdom and

1400. priests to our God, and they

1401. shall reign on the earth.

  1402. Remember, note that.

1403. It says that they'll reign on the

1404. earth as kingdom and priests to

1405. our God, and that matches

  1406. chapter 20, verse 6, which

1407. clarifies that we'll be priests

1408. of God and reign with Christ.

1409. On the earth today, we

1410. Christians are on the dock.

1411. In the court of public opinion,

  1412. as Bible-believing Christians, we

1413. are often objects of the world's

  1414. judgment and ridicule and

  1415. condemnation.

1416. How many times have you heard your

1417. peers at school or your co-workers

1418. or media pundits make snide remarks

1419. about our theological or ethical

  1420. beliefs?

1421. The world stands in judgment over

  1422. us.

  1423. But remember this.

1424. Do you know that in the

1425. millennium, the saints will judge

  1426. the world?

1427. And if the saints' reign will take

1428. place on the earth, as it says in

1429. Revelation 5, then verse 4 cannot be

1430. speaking of a spiritual resurrection

1431. and reign of the saints in heaven.

1432. So then the first resurrection in

1433. view in verse 4 has to be a

  1434. physical resurrection.

  1435. That's what we're going to talk

  1436. about next.

1437. It says in verse 4,

1438. I saw the souls of those who had

1439. been beheaded for the testimony of

  1440. Jesus.

1441. They came to life and reigned with

1442. Christ for a thousand years.

1443. The word beheaded clearly speaks of

1444. physical death, which means that the

1445. souls is a reference to disembodied

  1446. souls.

1447. So what does it mean that disembodied

  1448. souls came to life?

1449. The only thing that it can mean is

1450. that they were physically resurrected

1451. because these souls were not dead to

  1452. begin with.

1453. The Bible teaches that it does teach

1454. the immortality of the soul.

1455. And for that reason, when it speaks of

1456. the soul of deceased believers being

1457. translated into heaven in the

1458. intermediate state between the first

1459. and second coming of Christ, between

  1460. physical death and physical

1461. resurrection, it never speaks of the

  1462. soul coming to life.

1463. It never uses the language of

  1464. resurrection.

1465. For example, it says in Philippians 1,

1466. 21 to 23, for to me, to live is

1467. Christ and to die is gain.

1468. If I am to live in the flesh, that

1469. means fruitful labor for me, yet which

  1470. I shall choose I cannot tell.

1471. I am hard pressed between the two.

1472. My desire is to depart and be with

1473. Christ, for that is far better.

1474. So here Paul speaks of remaining physically

1475. alive in order to minister.

1476. But he talks also of dying physically so

1477. that he can depart and be with Christ.

1478. He doesn't say that his soul will come to

  1479. life or be resurrected.

1480. He says that his soul will be departing to

  1481. be with Christ.

  1482. Similarly, in 2 Corinthians 5, 8, Paul writes,

1483. we would rather be away from the body and

1484. at home with the Lord.

1485. Once again, Paul uses the language of

1486. travel rather than of resurrection.

1487. Away home, from home, depart.

1488. And that makes good sense because the soul

  1489. never dies.

1490. So it is nonsensical to speak of a soul being

  1491. raised to life.

1492. Even in the book of Revelation, when John

1493. speaks of souls in the intermediate state in

  1494. heaven, for example, Revelation 6, 9, 11, and 14, 13,

1495. it uses the word rest to describe their state.

1496. It never uses the language of resurrection.

1497. The Greek word that is translated resurrection

1498. here in Revelation 20 appears 41 times in the

  1499. New Testament.

1500. And it refers to a physical resurrection

1501. all of those times except for one.

  1502. It's Luke 2, 34.

1503. And in Luke 2, 34, the word is used figuratively

1504. to refer to the fall and rising of many.

1505. Similar to how we say that somebody's career

  1506. was resurrected.

  1507. It's being used figuratively in Luke 2, 34.

1508. So then, apart from that one instance where the

1509. word is not even being used literally,

1510. all instances of the word resurrection refers

1511. to the physical resurrection of people in the

  1512. New Testament.

1513. So then, there must be compelling, contextual

1514. evidence in Revelation 20 itself for us to not

1515. understand this word as referring to a physical

  1516. resurrection.

1517. But in this case, no such compelling evidence

  1518. exists.

1519. In Revelation 2, verse 8, which is a very close

    Revelation 2:8

1520. parallel, Jesus says the words of the first and

1521. the last who died and came to life.

1522. Exact same Greek word in the exact same tense as the

1523. one in Revelation 24 to 5 and refers to Christ's

  1524. physical resurrection.

1525. Similarly, it refers to the beast's physical

1526. resurrection using the same language in Revelation

  1527. 13, 14.

1528. Furthermore, the nature of the second resurrection

1529. that we see here gives us a clue for understanding

1530. the nature of the first resurrection.

1531. It says in verse 5,

1532. the rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand

  1533. years were ended.

1534. The believing dead come to life at the beginning of the

1535. millennium, but the unbelieving dead come to life after the

  1536. millennium.

1537. This is what Jesus talks about in John 5, 28 to 29.

1538. Do not marvel at this for an hour is coming when all who are in

1539. the tombs will hear his voice and come out.

1540. Those who have done good to the resurrection of life, those who have

1541. done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

1542. It's interesting that Jesus distinguishes those two resurrections, the

1543. resurrection of life and the resurrection of judgment.

1544. And here it's clearly a physical resurrection.

1545. They come out from the tombs.

1546. For this reason, among all the millennial positions, there is almost universal

1547. agreement that the second resurrection in view here is a physical

  1548. resurrection.

1549. And if the second resurrection is physical, then in all likelihood, the first

  1550. resurrection is also physical.

1551. The first resurrection, the believing dead come to life.

1552. And in the second resurrection, the unbelieving dead come to life.

1553. The exact same words are used to describe these two resurrections in the span of

  1554. two verses.

1555. Verse 5 says that the rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand

  1556. years were ended.

1557. That implies that the other dead, because rest of the dead implies rest of the

  1558. dead.

1559. So that means the other dead, the believing dead, already came to life in the

1560. same way that the unbelieving dead will come to life after the millennium.

  1561. Namely, physically.

1562. And this is not the only place where the Bible speaks of two resurrections.

1563. We already saw how Jesus distinguished the resurrection of life from the

1564. resurrection of judgment in John 5.

1565. Similarly, Paul describes the order of the resurrections in 1 Corinthians 15, 22,

  1566. to 25.

1567. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive, but each in his

  1568. own order.

1569. Christ the first fruits, then at his coming, those who belong to Christ, then comes the

1570. end when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every

  1571. authority and power.

1572. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.

1573. The last enemy to be destroyed is the death.

1574. So you see the three resurrections there.

1575. Revelation 20 follows this precise order.

  1576. First, Christ is resurrected.

1577. Second, saints are resurrected at his second coming.

1578. And apparently that is not the end.

1579. Because third, and it says in Revelation 20, 13 to 14, death and Hades gave up the dead who

1580. were in them and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done.

  1581. There's another resurrection there.

1582. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire.

1583. This is the second death, the lake of fire.

1584. So the order is first, Christ's resurrection.

1585. Second, the first resurrection of the saints at the second coming.

1586. Then third, the second resurrection of unbelievers after the millennium.

1587. And then the final judgment and the second death in which death itself will be destroyed.

1588. The center for the study of global Christianity based in Gordon-Conwell's theological seminary

1589. estimates that 70 million Christians have been martyred for their faith over the last 2,000 years.

  1590. 70 million.

1591. Open Door's ministry estimates that 5,621 Christians were murdered because of their faith this past year.

1592. And all that seems so final, doesn't it?

1593. What can be done about their lost days?

1594. What can be done about their lost lives?

1595. Do we just tell them, well, hey, be happy that, you know, at least your souls are alive in heaven?

  1596. No.

1597. We have a greater hope than that.

1598. The victory of Christ is not total and the vindication of the saints is not complete until death, our last enemy, is vanquished.

1599. Though the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet make war against the saints and conquer them,

1600. all the damage that they do, including death itself, will be finally and irrevocably reversed.

1601. Our great hope, brothers and sisters, is not in the immortality of the soul, but the resurrection of the body.

1602. But then why doesn't God just bring about the final consummation and a new heaven and a new earth depicted in Revelation 21 right away,

1603. along with the second coming and the resurrection of the saints?

1604. What is the purpose of this intervening millennial reign of Christ on earth?

1605. In this present world, we walk by faith and not by sight.

1606. We don't get to see the reign of Christ on earth today.

1607. But in the millennial kingdom, the reign of Christ, which is at present invisible,

1608. will find its visible expression in history so that all might see.

1609. Have you ever felt aggrieved, pained, injured, and wronged by the reality that Christ's name is blasphemed

1610. and that the word of God is trampled upon by sinful men?

1611. Have you ever lamented the sinful leaders of our world and how different it would be if Christ the king were to reign physically here over the earth?

1612. In the millennium, we will get to see that.

1613. The people of heaven for millennia, we had to, the Christians for millennia, had to endure living in a sinful world that is under the tyrannical regime of the dragon,

1614. being persecuted and harassed by the beast, the false prophet, and the Babylon.

1615. So there is symmetrical justice and vindication when the people of earth have to live in the millennium where the dragon is imprisoned

1616. and Christ is reigning from the throne where he belongs.

1617. In the millennium, we will see the nations of the world give Christ finally the honor and the glory that is due to his name

1618. that we have longed to see but have failed to see here in our own life.

1619. That's the intended effect of this passage, to fill us with hope that enables us to endure

1620. because Satan is a lame duck and a glorious regime change is coming.

1621. He says in verse 6,

1622. Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection.

1623. Over such, the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ

1624. and they will reign with him for a thousand years.

1625. Do you fret now that unbelieving sinners live to ripe old age while some faithful Christians are persecuted and killed

1626. for being witnesses of Jesus?

1627. Does it seem unfair to you that the true king goes unrecognized and that his servants are disrespected?

1628. Fret not because though the dragon and the beast make war against doesn't kill us.

1629. That's only the first death.

1630. Though Christians might be the first to die, we will get to share in the first resurrection.

1631. And over those, the second death has no power.

1632. Jesus has removed the sting of death on our behalf so that it no longer has power over those who have put their trust in him.

1633. A killer bee sting can be very painful and deadly if there's more than one.

1634. But if a bee sting, if the bee sting gets wedged inside your skin,

1635. when the killer bee tries to run away, its sting is ripped away along with part of its abdomen

1636. and the internal organs so that it dies from disembowelment in several minutes.

1637. That's what Jesus has done to death itself when he died on the cross for our sins.

1638. He bore our punishment and the wrath that we deserved on the cross.

  1639. Death stung him.

  1640. It killed him.

1641. But because Jesus was the sinless and blameless son of God, death could not hold him down.

1642. And in his resurrection from the dead, Jesus de-stinged death.

1643. He disemboweled death itself so that the day when death and Hades itself will be thrown into the lake of fire is surely coming.

1644. Death is swallowed up in victory.

1645. Oh, death, where is your victory?

1646. Oh, death, where is your sting?

1647. The sting of death is sin and the power of sin is the law.

1648. But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

1649. That's why we need not fear death.

1650. Saints of Christ, remember that our defeat and death are temporary.

1651. Our eternal destiny is resurrection and rule.

  1652. Let's pray together.

  1653. Let's pray together.

1654. Oh, Father, please help us to look past the nitty-gritty exegetical details of this passage

1655. and to be able to grasp this blessed hope.

1656. Enlarge our understanding, our vision of our destiny, what you want for us in Christ,

1657. our future resurrection and reign with him,

1658. so that we are captivated by that reality and we walk daily in light of that reality by faith and not by sight.

1659. Oh, but Lord, we long for that day when our faith will be turned to sight,

1660. when we will see your reign over all the earth, over all the nations.

  1661. Come, Lord Jesus.

1662. In your precious name we pray.

  1663. Amen.
