  1. It's great to worship with you all.

  2. Please turn your Bibles to Revelation chapter 21, verses 9 to 27.

    Revelation 21:9–27

  3. If you don't have a Bible, if you raise your hand, we'd love to bring over a copy to you

  4. that you can have and use.

  5. We're getting close to the end of our sermon series in the book of Revelation.

  6. We're in chapter 21 today, verses 9 to 27.

  7. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Sean.

  8. I'm one of the pastors of Trinity Cambridge Church, and it is my great joy and honor to

  9. preach God's word to you this morning.

  10. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  11. Heavenly Father, we humble our hearts before you and incline our ears to you now.

  12. Speak to us from your inerrant, infallible word, and impress deeply upon our hearts your love

  13. for your church.

  14. And captivate us with the beauty and the glory that will be New Jerusalem, that will be ours

  15. in eternity, so that it shapes our perspectives and our priorities here and now.

  16. Meet with us now in your word.

  17. In Jesus' name we pray.

  18. Amen.

  19. Please stand and join me as I read out loud Revelation 21, 9 to 27.

  20. Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues

  21. and spoke to me saying, come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the lamb.

  22. And he carried me away in the spirit to a great high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem

  23. coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare

  24. jewel, like a jasper clear as crystal.

  25. It had a great high wall with 12 gates and at the gates 12 angels.

  26. And on the gates, the names of the 12 tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed.

  27. On the east, three gates, on the north, three gates, on the south, three gates, and on the

  28. west, three gates.

  29. And the wall of the city had 12 foundations.

  30. And on them were the 12 names of the 12 apostles of the lamb.

  31. And the one who spoke with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city and its gates

  32. and walls.

  33. The city lies four square, its length the same as its width.

  34. And he measured the city with his rod, 12,000 stadia.

  35. Its length and width and height are equal.

  36. He also measured its wall, 144 cubits by human measurement, which is also an angel's measurement.

  37. The wall was built of jasper while the city was pure gold like clear glass.

  38. The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of jewel.

  39. The first was jasper.

  40. The second, sapphire.

  41. The third, agate.

  42. The fourth, emerald.

  43. The fifth, onyx.

  44. The sixth, carnelian.

  45. The seventh, crystallite.

  46. The eighth, beryl.

  47. The ninth, topaz.

  48. The tenth, chrysoprase.

  49. The eleventh, jacinth.

  50. The twelfth, amethyst.

  51. And the twelve gates were twelve pearls.

  52. Each of them, each of the gates made of a single pearl.

  53. And the street of the city was pure gold like transparent glass.

  54. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  55. You may be seated.

  56. Jesus said in Matthew 6, 19 to 21,

  57. Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.

  58. But throw up your treasures in heaven where the moth and rust do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal.

  59. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

  60. Jesus teaches us there a very important principle.

  61. He's commanding us, choose your treasure carefully.

  62. Because your heart, the direction of your life, always follow your treasure.

  63. If you treasure climbing the career ladder and being successful and making loads of money,

  64. then that's where your heart, the center of your being, will be preoccupied with.

  65. If you treasure your children above all things,

  66. then all your exerting and spending and warring will orbit around them.

  67. If you treasure the approval and affection of men,

  68. then the bulk of your time and energy and money will be spent around trying to impress other humans.

  69. So choose your treasure carefully.

  70. Make sure that your treasure is in heaven where it will be safe and secure forever rather than here on earth.

  71. And that's what really Revelation 21 and the entire book of Revelation has been about.

  72. It's been portraying to us eternal realities through visual symbols

  73. such as to capture our spiritual imagination.

  74. To tell us, here's something really worth living for.

  75. Here's something really worth treasuring.

  76. Here's something that will never depreciate in value.

  77. A currency that will never expire.

  78. An inheritance that never wears out.

  79. The resurrection life.

  80. The kingdom of God.

  81. A new heaven and a new earth.

  82. The new Jerusalem.

  83. Eternal, unbroken fellowship with the Lord God, the Almighty, and the Lamb.

  84. What we treasure in our hearts, what we love is like a rudder that determines the direction and guides the ship.

  85. Treasure this and your heart will follow.

  86. Treasure this and you will have heavenly perspectives.

  87. Treasure this and then you will have heavenly purposes and heavenly priorities.

  88. And if we don't this morning feel a homesickness for a new heaven and a new earth,

  89. then that may be a warning for us that we are probably not treasuring the things of heaven.

  90. That's the main point of my sermon this morning.

  91. Looking forward to the new Jerusalem in which we will have unhindered fellowship with God.

  92. We should live holy lives and hold on to the testimony of Jesus.

  93. And I'm going to talk about the new Jerusalem in three different facets.

  94. First, it's unassailable in its security.

  95. Second, it is unflawed in its symmetry.

  96. And third, it's unparalleled in its splendor.

  97. First, we can look forward to the new Jerusalem because it will be unassailable in its security.

  98. It says in verse 9,

  99. Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues

  100. and spoke to me, saying,

  101. Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.

  102. This might sound familiar to you, and that's no coincidence,

  103. because one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls

  104. came and made a very similar announcement about Babylon the great prostitute earlier in chapter 17, verse 1.

  105. He said there,

  106. Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me,

  107. Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters.

  108. So these are parallel introductions of two opposite realities.

  109. And it intentionally draws a contrast between the great prostitute and the bride, the wife of the Lamb.

  110. Remember, they're both depicted as women, and they're both depicted as cities.

  111. And that's how we know these are metaphors and symbols,

  112. because you cannot be a woman and a city at the same time.

  113. The great prostitute is Babylon, the city of man.

  114. And the wife of the Lamb is the holy city, Jerusalem, that comes down out of heaven from God.

  115. Babylon has written on her forehead the name,

  116. Babylon the Great, Mother of Prostitutes and of Earth's Abominations, it said in 17.5.

  117. But the New Jerusalem has the name of God and of the Lamb on her forehead.

  118. In Revelation 21, verse 4.

    Revelation 21:4

  119. Babylon the harlot is seated on many waters.

  120. That's a symbol of how she committed adultery with the kings of the earth.

  121. Her idolatrous maritime commerce represented by these many waters.

  122. But in stark contrast, the New Jerusalem has only one source of water,

  123. the spring of living water, the river of life that flows from the throne of God and the Lamb

  124. in the new city, the holy city, because she is the faithful one, the faithful bride.

  125. In the end, Revelation 17.16 told us that the prostitute will be made desolate and naked,

  126. but the bride of the Lamb will be clothed in white.

  127. The prostitute is used by men selfishly.

  128. The wife is loved by men selflessly.

  129. He says in Ephesians 5.25,

  130. Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.

  131. That's what wives deserve.

  132. Do you want to be a prostitute that is used and abused and discarded?

  133. Or do you want to be the bride, the wife of the Lamb, the King of kings and Lord of lords,

  134. and be cherished by him forever?

  135. If you want that, then hold on to the testimony of Jesus and endure to the end and forsake the idolatrous desires of this world.

  136. Early in Revelation 12, the woman who represented the people of God took shelter in the wilderness,

  137. where she was spiritually protected by God, but physically vulnerable and persecuted by the dragon.

  138. But in a new heaven and a new earth, as we see here, we will no longer be in the wilderness.

  139. It says in verse 10,

  140. And he carried me away in the spirit to a great high mountain,

  141. and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God.

  142. We'll be on the mountaintop in eternity.

  143. Throughout scripture, wilderness is the place of journeying.

  144. It's the place of testing.

  145. Think of Israel's journey through the wilderness when they are tested for 40 years,

  146. and finally they arrive in the holy land, in Canaan, Mount Zion, where they worship God in the temple.

  147. Or compare that to Jesus' journey into the wilderness where he is tested and tempted by Satan for 40 days.

  148. And then after that, he begins his ministry and climbs up to give his sermon on the mount.

  149. In scripture, wilderness is the place of not yet.

  150. The mountaintop is the place of finally here.

  151. The mountain is the place of arrival, the place of promise, place of revelation,

  152. the place of God's presence and communion with him.

  153. And that's why Ezekiel 40 verses 1 to 2 prophesied that the end time city and temple

    Ezekiel 40:1–2

  154. will be set on a very high mountain.

  155. And so the new Jerusalem is on a great high mountain.

  156. And it says in verse 11 that this holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God

  157. has the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.

  158. John reported something very similar in his earlier vision of the throne room of God in heaven in Revelation 4.

  159. He who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian,

  160. and around the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald.

  161. And before the throne, there was, as it were, a sea of glass like crystal.

  162. The glory of God is resplendent.

  163. It's brilliant.

  164. And on that day, the glory of God will be our glory also.

  165. Know what it says in verse 11.

  166. The new Jerusalem will come down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God.

  167. The fact that this new Jerusalem comes down out of heaven from God,

  168. the fact that this new Jerusalem is not built up from the bottom up here on earth,

  169. but whether it comes down from God, shows us that our fellowship with God,

  170. our eternal destiny, is not a human achievement.

  171. It is a gift from God.

  172. And the fact that the glory of the new Jerusalem will not be our own glory,

  173. but the glory of God, it says,

  174. tells us that God's people are those who have humbled themselves before God,

  175. those who do not seek or boast in their own glory,

  176. but rather seek the glory of God alone.

  177. Unlike the city of Babel, remember that?

  178. Genesis 11, which was a monument to human hubris,

  179. built by sinful men who said to themselves,

  180. come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens,

  181. and let us make a name for ourselves.

  182. That was their motivation.

  183. The holy city of Jerusalem, in contrast,

  184. comes down out of heaven from God as a gift.

  185. And it will have the names of the 12 tribes of the sons of Israel inscribed on the gates,

  186. and the names of the 12 apostles of the Lamb written on the foundation.

  187. People who have pledged their allegiance to Jesus,

  188. they're the ones who ultimately get their names inscribed forever.

  189. It's those who deny themselves and take up the cross and follow Jesus.

  190. Those who lose their lives for the sake of Jesus,

  191. who ultimately find it.

  192. Brothers and sisters,

  193. where do you want your name to be remembered and inscribed at the end of the ages?

  194. For whose glory are you living?

  195. Do you want to see your name published in the Fortune magazine's 40 Under 40?

  196. Do you want to see your name engraved in Kendall Square's Entrepreneur Walk of Fame

  197. alongside Bill Gates and Bill Hewlett and Bob Swanson, David Packard,

  198. Mitch Caper and Steve Jobs and Thomas Edison?

  199. Listen, I assure you that all of those names will be forgotten one day.

  200. And only the names that are written in the Lamb's book of life,

  201. only those who belong to the church of Christ,

  202. the people of God,

  203. they will have their names inscribed forever on the 12 gates,

  204. the 12 foundations of the New Jerusalem.

  205. Only they will be remembered forever.

  206. So where is your treasure?

  207. Choose your treasure carefully.

  208. Make sure that your treasure is in the new heaven and the new earth

  209. and not on this earth which is passing away.

  210. And don't miss the radical unity of the people of God.

  211. It says both Jews and Gentiles,

  212. the names of the 12 tribes of the sons of Israel,

  213. the old covenant people of God are inscribed on the gates,

  214. and the names of the 12 apostles of the Lamb,

  215. are written on the 12 foundations

  216. because it says in Ephesians 2, 19 to 20,

  217. that both Jews and Gentiles are fellow citizens

  218. and members of the household of God

  219. built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets,

  220. Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone.

  221. There are not two segregated cities in the new Jerusalem.

  222. There's only one new Jerusalem

  223. because there is neither Jew nor Greek

  224. for we are all one in Christ Jesus

  225. because we have one body, one spirit,

  226. just as we are called to the one hope that belongs to our call.

  227. One Lord, one faith, one baptism,

  228. which we'll celebrate shortly.

  229. One God and Father of all

  230. who is over all and through all and in all.

  231. Right now, the people of God are plagued

  232. by many kinds of divisions along ethnic lines,

  233. radical, you know, racial lines,

  234. political lines, doctrinal lines,

  235. geographical lines.

  236. And we long for the full expression

  237. of our spiritual unity, which is not yet.

  238. But in the new Jerusalem, we will be perfectly one.

  239. Verse 12 continues the description of the city.

  240. It had a great high wall with 12 gates

  241. and at the gates, 12 angels.

  242. Earlier in verse 10, we were told

  243. that the new Jerusalem sits atop a great high mountain.

  244. And now we are told that on top of that great high mountain,

  245. there's also a great high wall.

  246. As if the mountain itself were in sufficient defense.

  247. And this wall must be exceedingly high

  248. since it's protecting a city

  249. that it says is 12,000 stadia in height,

  250. according to verse 16.

  251. One stadion is about 607 feet.

  252. So that's about 1,400 miles

  253. or 2,200 kilometers in height, this city.

  254. The Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates,

  255. is the world's tallest building

  256. and it stands 2,717 feet.

  257. The new Jerusalem is 7,392,000 feet tall.

  258. As I said earlier, this is a metaphor.

  259. It's figurative and symbolic.

  260. It's conveying, but it is conveying a spiritual reality.

  261. It's supposed to boggle our minds.

  262. If a city is that tall,

  263. then how tall is the great high wall

  264. that's already sitting on a great high mountain

  265. to protect it?

  266. And that's why I think the measurement of the wall

  267. that's given in verse 17, 144 cubits,

  268. is not referring to its height or the length of the wall,

  269. but to the wall's width, to its thickness,

  270. which is how the NIV translates it.

  271. The Great Wall of China at its widest point,

  272. most of it is much narrower than this,

  273. at its widest point is 32 feet thick,

  274. but 144 cubit wall is 216 feet thick.

  275. That's about the width of a professional soccer field.

  276. So it's going to take us a while

  277. to just walk through the gates.

  278. And the point is this,

  279. this is a completely impenetrable fortress.

  280. Not only that, over each of the 12 gates,

  281. there are 12 angels.

  282. The Lord says in Isaiah 62, verse 6,

    Isaiah 62:6

  283. on your walls, O Jerusalem,

  284. I have set watchmen.

  285. These are guardian angels, heavenly sentinels.

  286. If you have been with us

  287. throughout our sermon series in Revelation,

  288. you know how powerful even just one of these angels are.

  289. Can wipe out vast swaths of creation.

  290. One fell swoop with divine authorization.

  291. And there's 12 at each,

  292. one in each gate guarding over the new Jerusalem.

  293. Not that that's actually necessary.

  294. There's actually no need for a wall at all

  295. because all the enemies of God and his people

  296. have been vanquished already.

  297. And that's why later in verse 25,

  298. that it says that its gates will never be shut

  299. because there is no more danger.

  300. But nonetheless, God shows John a vision

  301. of the new Jerusalem with a great high wall

  302. to impress indelibly upon our minds

  303. this picture of an unassailable,

  304. impregnable fortress and city

  305. in order to convey to us the idea

  306. of the eternal security of the saints.

  307. Imagine what a source of comfort

  308. these walls would have been

  309. for city dwellers in the ancient world.

  310. These walls keep wild beasts out of the city.

  311. These walls keep warring intruders out of the city.

  312. It's why they can sleep at night.

  313. And God is sending to us an unmistakable message

  314. to Christians who are persecuted and sorely oppressed.

  315. As we saw in Jesus' seven letters to the seven churches

  316. in chapters two and three,

  317. the church of Christ in the present world

  318. often has little power.

  319. They must face toil.

  320. They bear up on their suffering for Christ's name's sake.

  321. They experience tribulation and poverty.

  322. They are slandered by Satan and his minions.

  323. They are thrown into prison

  324. and sometimes they even face death.

  325. But with this glorious vision

  326. of the new Jerusalem's great high wall,

  327. Jesus is assuring us,

  328. hold on.

  329. Press on in this life,

  330. even though you are reviled,

  331. slandered, imprisoned, beaten, and killed

  332. for my name's sake.

  333. Because in the new Jerusalem,

  334. you will be untouchable.

  335. You will be invulnerable

  336. and you will be unassailable.

  337. There on the great high mountain,

  338. behind the great high wall,

  339. you will finally be safe.

  340. It's only in the new heaven and a new earth

  341. that we will be safe and secure forever.

  342. Our culture today idolizes safety.

  343. So-called safe spaces are sacrosanct.

  344. They are the holy ground

  345. built on the temple of self

  346. upon which everybody else that approaches

  347. and the churches must remove their sandals.

  348. But when did Jesus ever promise us

  349. safety from discomfort and danger in this life?

  350. Jesus said in Luke 21, 12,

  351. they will lay their hands on you

  352. and persecute you,

  353. delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons.

  354. Does that sound safe?

  355. Matthew 24, 9,

  356. they will deliver you up to tribulation

  357. and put you to death

  358. and you will be hated by all nations

  359. for my name's sake.

  360. Brothers and sisters,

  361. don't seek your ultimate safety here on earth.

  362. Where is your treasure?

  363. Is it in the new heaven and the new earth

  364. or is it here?

  365. Your body can be harmed here on earth.

  366. Your feelings can be hurt here on earth.

  367. Your life can be taken here on earth.

  368. But in the new heaven and the new earth,

  369. we will be safe and secure forever.

  370. The new Jerusalem will also be unflawed

  371. in its symmetry.

  372. It's, sorry, in symmetry.

  373. Here in verse 15,

  374. an angel of God uses a measuring rod of gold

  375. to measure the city and its gates and walls.

  376. This is an allusion to Ezekiel 40 to 48

  377. where the prophet Ezekiel sees an end time vision

  378. of a glorious new temple

  379. where the glory of God will dwell.

  380. And an angelic being at that point

  381. in Ezekiel 40, verse 3,

    Ezekiel 40:3

  382. takes a measuring rod

  383. and starts to painstakingly measure

  384. every dimension of the new temple.

  385. And the measurements here we see in Revelation 21

  386. are symbolically laden.

  387. It's meaningful.

  388. Verse 16 says that the city lies four square,

  389. its length the same as its width.

  390. And he measured the city with his rod,

  391. 12,000 stadia,

  392. its length and width and height are equal.

  393. The meaning of the word four square

  394. is explained in the following clause.

  395. Its length and,

  396. or it's the same as the width,

  397. meaning it's got four equal sides.

  398. It's a square.

  399. And then not only the length and the width,

  400. but it also says that height of the new Jerusalem

  401. are equal, meaning the city is a perfect cube.

  402. And that's significant

  403. because there is no structure in the entire Old Testament

  404. that is shaped as a cube

  405. except for one.

  406. That's the holy of holies,

  407. the most holy place in the tabernacle

  408. and the most holy place in the new temple

  409. and the most holy place prophesied of

  410. in Ezekiel's vision in Ezekiel 41 verse 4.

    Ezekiel 41:4

  411. This allusion to the most holy place

  412. indicates that as the new Jerusalem,

  413. we will enjoy perfect fellowship with God forever.

  414. Remember in the old Jerusalem,

  415. only the high priests could enter the most holy place

  416. and that only once a year

  417. and only after making sacrifice for sin.

  418. But in the new Jerusalem,

  419. we will all be in the most holy place.

  420. In fact, we will ourselves be

  421. the holy of holies upon which God dwells.

  422. And this is why in the glorious passage

  423. that Andrew will preach next week,

  424. he says that there is no temple in the city

  425. for its temple is the Lord God,

  426. the Almighty and the Lamb.

  427. And we will see God's face.

  428. We will no longer have a mediated view of God.

  429. We will have a direct, unmediated vision of God

  430. face to face.

  431. But how can that possibly be?

  432. How can sinners like us face the Almighty God

  433. and still live?

  434. How can we possibly be the holy of holies?

  435. It's not because we're so special.

  436. Hebrews 9 reminds us that

  437. in the old Jerusalem temple,

  438. only the high priest went into the most holy place

  439. and he but once a year

  440. and not without taking blood.

  441. But Christ entered once for all

  442. into the holy places,

  443. not by means of the blood of goats and calves,

  444. but by means of his own blood,

  445. thus securing an eternal redemption.

  446. On the cross,

  447. Jesus made the atoning sacrifice

  448. for our sins once and for all

  449. by offering up himself

  450. as the sacrificial lamb.

  451. And then he was raised from the dead

  452. on the third day

  453. and because of that,

  454. that eternal redemption of Christ

  455. secured for us 2,000 years ago

  456. is what guarantees to us

  457. this eternal future

  458. as the new Jerusalem

  459. and being the holy of holies

  460. indwelled by the Almighty God.

  461. This is why the new Jerusalem

  462. is a perfect cube.

  463. But the dimensions of the city,

  464. it's only 20 cubits in the temple,

  465. but it's enlarged to the nth degree

  466. with this glorious eternal city

  467. of New Jerusalem.

  468. The city measures,

  469. I mentioned,

  470. 12,000 stadia in length,

  471. width, and height,

  472. which I mentioned to you

  473. is 1,400 cubic miles.

  474. If you plop down a metropolis

  475. of that size

  476. in the middle of the United States,

  477. it would stretch north to south

  478. from Canada to Mexico

  479. and then from east to west

  480. from the Appalachian Mountains

  481. to the border of California.

  482. That's nearly 2 million square miles,

  483. which is over 4,000 times

  484. the size of New York City.

  485. And that's only the ground floor

  486. because remember,

  487. the height is just as tall

  488. as the width.

  489. So if you use standard measurements

  490. and say that every story

  491. is 14 feet tall

  492. or something like that,

  493. this will be a building

  494. about 528,000 stories tall.

  495. Jesus wasn't joking

  496. when he said in John 14,

  497. in my father's house

  498. are many rooms.

  499. If it were not so,

  500. would I have told you

  501. that I go to prepare

  502. a place for you?

  503. And if I go and prepare

  504. a place for you,

  505. I will come again

  506. and will take you to myself.

  507. That where I am,

  508. you may be also.

  509. The sheer scale,

  510. the size of this new Jerusalem

  511. conveys a sense of grandeur

  512. and welcome

  513. and hospitality

  514. because the people of God

  515. in that end,

  516. in the eternity

  517. will be from every nation

  518. and people

  519. and tribe and tongue

  520. will be a numberless multitude

  521. and God's assuring us,

  522. yes, for you,

  523. there is room.

  524. I will dwell with you forever.

  525. But this number

  526. is not meant to be understood

  527. literally,

  528. but figuratively,

  529. like the other numbers

  530. we have seen so far

  531. in the book of Revelation.

  532. The great high wall

  533. of New Jerusalem

  534. is 12 gates

  535. guarded by 12 angels,

  536. has names of 12 tribes

  537. of sons of Israel

  538. as inscribed on it.

  539. It has 12 foundations

  540. which has the 12 names

  541. of the 12 apostles of the Lamb.

  542. 12, 12, 12, 12.

  543. Why?

  544. Because 12 is a number

  545. that represents

  546. the people of God.

  547. The 12 tribes of Israel

  548. and the 12 apostles of the Lamb.

  549. That's why the dimensions

  550. of the city

  551. is 12,000 stadia,

  552. 12 times 1,000

  553. which represents

  554. the multitude.

  555. This is also why

  556. the thickness of the wall

  557. in verse 17

  558. is 144 cubits

  559. because that's

  560. the square of 12,

  561. 12 times 12.

  562. All of these measurements

  563. confirms the symbolism

  564. that the New Jerusalem

  565. is the people of God.

  566. So,

  567. don't imagine yourself

  568. not quite accurate

  569. to say

  570. we're going to be walking

  571. on streets of gold

  572. because you are

  573. the streets of gold,

  574. right?

  575. But that's okay.

  576. We mix metaphors

  577. when we talk about this.

  578. And the bride of the Lamb

  579. is going to be

  580. ravishing in her beauty.

  581. I cannot wait to see

  582. the church

  583. in all her splendor.

  584. Look at verse 18 to 21.

  585. The wall was built

  586. of jasper

  587. while the city

  588. was pure gold

  589. like clear glass.

  590. Even the wall

  591. of the city

  592. is made of jasper

  593. which is reminiscent

  594. of the glory of God

  595. from earlier in verse 11.

  596. The city itself

  597. is made of pure gold.

  598. Imagine a city

  599. of this scale

  600. made entirely of gold.

  601. gold.

  602. It's unfathomable

  603. and supposed to be.

  604. And God is so,

  605. the gold is so pure

  606. that it is described

  607. as being like

  608. clear glass.

  609. Who has ever heard

  610. of a gold

  611. that is clear

  612. like glass?

  613. Gold is an opaque metal.

  614. So,

  615. I'm not sure

  616. what that means

  617. but we need to remember

  618. that John's reporting

  619. a prophetic vision

  620. and the beauty

  621. of New Jerusalem

  622. is so transcendent.

  623. It stretches

  624. his imagination.

  625. It stretches

  626. his knowledge

  627. of the material universe.

  628. It stretches

  629. his vocabulary

  630. so that the only way

  631. he could quite

  632. describe something

  633. that is indescribable

  634. is to mash together

  635. two contradictory things

  636. and say this pure gold

  637. is clear

  638. like glass.

  639. We can't quite imagine

  640. how beautiful

  641. this city will be

  642. and that's precisely

  643. the point.

  644. not only is this city

  645. itself made of pure gold

  646. verse 21 says

  647. the street of the city

  648. was pure gold

  649. like transparent glass.

  650. There are temples

  651. throughout the world

  652. that have been made of gold

  653. not purely of gold

  654. but still made of gold

  655. to a certain extent

  656. but I assure you

  657. there are no streets

  658. in any part of the world

  659. that is made of gold.

  660. None.

  661. Because that's just

  662. a little wasteful.

  663. That's too extravagant.

  664. Streets

  665. we walk on that.

  666. You're going to make that

  667. of gold?

  668. Nobody does that

  669. but in New Jerusalem

  670. even the street

  671. of the city

  672. is of pure gold

  673. which highlights

  674. the no expense

  675. spared luxury

  676. and beauty

  677. and glory

  678. of the city.

  679. Similarly

  680. verse 21

  681. says

  682. the 12 gates

  683. were 12 pearls

  684. each of the gates

  685. made of a single pearl.

  686. Some of you guys

  687. have pearl jewelry

  688. someone wearing pearl

  689. right now?

  690. Pearls are

  691. exceedingly rare

  692. and costly

  693. because they're produced

  694. by these shelled mollusks

  695. takes years

  696. to produce.

  697. That's why

  698. even a small pearl

  699. earring

  700. is so expensive

  701. and the larger

  702. the pearl gets

  703. the harder it is

  704. to produce

  705. the rarer it is

  706. and the more

  707. exponentially expensive

  708. it is.

  709. The largest pearl

  710. in the world

  711. is appropriately

  712. named

  713. the Giga Pearl.

  714. It weighs

  715. 61 pounds

  716. and is about

  717. the size

  718. of a cow's head.

  719. It's valued

  720. at about

  721. 90 million dollars.

  722. That's nothing.

  723. Remember how big

  724. the wall

  725. of the New Jerusalem

  726. is

  727. and how big

  728. this gate is

  729. and it says

  730. that each gate

  731. is fashioned

  732. out of a single pearl.

  733. Not a whole bunch

  734. of little pearls

  735. glued together

  736. a single pearl

  737. like the statue

  738. of David

  739. Michelangelo's David

  740. is made of a single

  741. pearl block.

  742. Not pearl

  743. sorry marble

  744. that cannot possibly

  745. be pearl

  746. sorry

  747. marble

  748. yeah

  749. and the pearls

  750. are not even

  751. the only jewels

  752. in this city.

  753. The foundations

  754. of the wall

  755. of the city

  756. are adorned

  757. with every kind

  758. of jewel

  759. it says

  760. in verse 19

  761. and these jewels

  762. are precious

  763. variegated colors

  764. gemstones

  765. that put the

  766. tawdry jewelry

  767. of Babylon

  768. the prostitute

  769. in Revelation 17

  770. 4

  771. to shame.

  772. what's most

  773. significant

  774. about the precious

  775. stones listed

  776. here in verses

  777. 19 to 20

  778. is that they

  779. match almost

  780. exactly

  781. and probably

  782. meant to

  783. reproduce

  784. the list

  785. of the 12

  786. precious stones

  787. that were set

  788. on the breastplate

  789. of the high priest

  790. who enters

  791. into the most

  792. holy place

  793. to intercede

  794. on behalf

  795. of the people

  796. of God

  797. in Exodus

  798. 28

  799. 17 to 20.

  800. those 12

  801. gems

  802. on the breastpiece

  803. of the high priest

  804. had the names

  805. of the 12

  806. sons of Israel

  807. inscribed on them

  808. and like us

  809. we have the names

  810. of the 12

  811. sons of Israel

  812. on the gates

  813. inscribed on the gates

  814. and the names

  815. of the apostles

  816. of the Lamb

  817. inscribed on the

  818. foundation

  819. of this new Jerusalem.

  820. Again

  821. driving home

  822. the point

  823. only the

  824. high priest

  825. wore those gems

  826. you'd think

  827. the common Israelites

  828. could dream

  829. of even one

  830. of those gems

  831. but now

  832. in the new Jerusalem

  833. all of us

  834. all of God's people

  835. we have those gems

  836. we're bedecked

  837. with those jewels

  838. for eternity

  839. and those precious stones

  840. function as a

  841. visible representation

  842. of what God

  843. says to his people

  844. in Exodus 19

  845. 5

  846. you shall be

  847. my treasured

  848. possession

  849. among all peoples

  850. do you know

  851. saints of God

  852. every single one

  853. of you

  854. do you know

  855. people of God

  856. how precious

  857. you are to him

  858. the new Jerusalem

  859. is not going to be

  860. constructed

  861. with cheap

  862. plywood

  863. and cold steel

  864. and dull

  865. boring concrete

  866. it's going to be

  867. made up of gold

  868. and crystals

  869. and be decked

  870. with all kinds

  871. of jewels

  872. and that

  873. demonstrates

  874. your inestimable

  875. value to God

  876. you are no

  877. reclaimed good

  878. from dumpster

  879. diving

  880. at the end

  881. of the summer

  882. or beginning

  883. of the summer

  884. you're not

  885. used good

  886. purchased from

  887. Facebook marketplace

  888. you are

  889. God's

  890. treasured

  891. possession

  892. Taylor Swift

  893. Beyonce

  894. Lionel Messi

  895. Cristiano Ronaldo

  896. they're all

  897. lowly

  898. plebes

  899. compared to

  900. who you are

  901. in Christ Jesus

  902. do you believe that?

  903. now don't let it

  904. get to your head

  905. you're

  906. we should be

  907. humble

  908. because we are

  909. sinners saved

  910. by the mercy

  911. and grace of God

  912. but at the same

  913. time have

  914. an amazing

  915. confidence

  916. in Christ

  917. you should all

  918. walk out of here

  919. with your heads

  920. held high

  921. the political

  922. elites

  923. the intelligentsia

  924. the wealthy

  925. 1%

  926. the Hollywood

  927. stars

  928. have nothing

  929. they have

  930. nothing

  931. on even

  932. the simplest

  933. and the

  934. most humble

  935. believer

  936. in Christ

  937. they have

  938. nothing

  939. on him

  940. or her

  941. they are

  942. the dwelling

  943. place

  944. of God

  945. the bride

  946. and wife

  947. of the

  948. land

  949. in addition

  950. to being

  951. contrasted

  952. with Babylon

  953. the prostitute

  954. this perfected

  955. bride of Christ

  956. is also being

  957. contrasted

  958. with the still

  959. imperfect

  960. bride of Christ

  961. at the beginning

  962. of the book

  963. that we saw

  964. in chapters 2

  965. and 3

  966. I have this

  967. to show

  968. Revelation

  969. began with

  970. a prologue

  971. and then a

  972. vision of

  973. the imperfect

  974. church

  975. and then a

  976. vision of

  977. God's throne

  978. and Christ's

  979. inauguration

  980. of God's

  981. judgment

  982. and then

  983. at the end

  984. of the book

  985. in matching

  986. reverse order

  987. Revelation

  988. ends with

  989. the vision

  990. of God's

  991. throne

  992. and Christ's

  993. consummation

  994. of his

  995. judgment

  996. and a

  997. vision

  998. of the

  999. perfected

  1000. church

  1001. followed

  1002. by an

  1003. epilogue

  1004. and this

  1005. chiastic

  1006. structure

  1007. intentionally

  1008. highlights

  1009. a contrast

  1010. between

  1011. the still

  1012. imperfect

  1013. church

  1014. and the

  1015. future

  1016. perfect

  1017. church

  1018. of Christ

  1019. remember

  1020. what you

  1021. saw

  1022. in chapters

  1023. 2 and

  1024. 3

  1025. that some

  1026. churches

  1027. today

  1028. have

  1029. abandoned

  1030. the love

  1031. they had

  1032. at first

  1033. that some

  1034. tolerate

  1035. false

  1036. teaching

  1037. and false

  1038. teachers

  1039. that some

  1040. have soiled

  1041. their garments

  1042. by practicing

  1043. idolatry

  1044. and sexual

  1045. immorality

  1046. that some

  1047. churches

  1048. have the

  1049. reputation

  1050. of being

  1051. alive

  1052. but are

  1053. dead

  1054. and they're

  1055. spiritually

  1056. asleep

  1057. some churches

  1058. are lukewarm

  1059. and neither

  1060. hot nor cold

  1061. they're self

  1062. deluded

  1063. and wretched

  1064. and pitiable

  1065. and poor

  1066. and blind

  1067. and naked

  1068. but incredibly

  1069. despite all

  1070. of that

  1071. Jesus addresses

  1072. every single

  1073. one of those

  1074. seven churches

  1075. as his

  1076. church

  1077. that still

  1078. has an

  1079. angel

  1080. representing

  1081. them in

  1082. heaven

  1083. that still

  1084. has the

  1085. lamp

  1086. burning

  1087. before

  1088. the throne

  1089. of God

  1090. Jesus

  1091. does

  1092. rebuke

  1093. some of

  1094. those

  1095. churches

  1096. in utter

  1097. sincerity

  1098. saying in

  1099. Revelation 3

  1100. 19

  1101. those whom

  1102. I love

  1103. I reprove

  1104. and discipline

  1105. so be

  1106. zealous

  1107. and repent

  1108. but Jesus

  1109. never speaks

  1110. derisively

  1111. or dismissively

  1112. about his

  1113. church

  1114. why

  1115. because he

  1116. knows two

  1117. things that

  1118. we often

  1119. forget

  1120. he knows

  1121. the church's

  1122. true identity

  1123. that the

  1124. church is the

  1125. bride

  1126. the wife

  1127. of the

  1128. lamb

  1129. and because

  1130. two he

  1131. knows the

  1132. church's

  1133. eternal

  1134. destiny

  1135. Jesus knows

  1136. and sees

  1137. what she

  1138. will be

  1139. in the

  1140. new

  1141. Jerusalem

  1142. and will

  1143. do well

  1144. to keep

  1145. these two

  1146. realities in

  1147. view also

  1148. non-Christians

  1149. of course

  1150. do this

  1151. sometimes

  1152. but sadly

  1153. sometimes

  1154. even

  1155. Christians

  1156. speak in

  1157. a demeaning

  1158. and dismissive

  1159. manner about

  1160. the church

  1161. of Christ

  1162. well it's

  1163. because of

  1164. hypocritical

  1165. Christians

  1166. there are

  1167. countries

  1168. in a

  1169. downward

  1170. spiral

  1171. well it's

  1172. the church's

  1173. failure of

  1174. witness

  1175. is to

  1176. blame

  1177. for the

  1178. cultural

  1179. decadence

  1180. and the

  1181. spiritual

  1182. degeneracy

  1183. all around

  1184. us

  1185. homosexuals

  1186. hate

  1187. God

  1188. because

  1189. of the

  1190. church

  1191. because

  1192. of Christians

  1193. if only

  1194. the church

  1195. would be

  1196. the church

  1197. then the

  1198. world

  1199. wouldn't

  1200. be

  1201. such

  1202. a

  1203. mess

  1204. maybe

  1205. there's

  1206. a

  1207. kernel

  1208. of

  1209. truth

  1210. in

  1211. some

  1212. of

  1213. these

  1214. things

  1215. but

  1216. sometimes

  1217. people

  1218. make it

  1219. sound

  1220. like

  1221. the

  1222. church

  1223. is

  1224. the

  1225. root

  1226. of

  1227. all

  1228. of

  1229. the

  1230. world's

  1231. ills

  1232. and

  1233. evils

  1234. well that's

  1235. news

  1236. to the

  1237. book

  1238. of

  1239. Revelation

  1240. have

  1241. you

  1242. heard

  1243. of

  1244. the

  1245. great

  1246. red

  1247. dragon

  1248. the

  1249. beast

  1250. the

  1251. false

  1252. prophet

  1253. and

  1254. Babylon

  1255. the

  1256. great

  1257. prostitute

  1258. these

  1259. are

  1260. real

  1261. and they

  1262. are at

  1263. large

  1264. in the

  1265. world

  1266. yes the

  1267. church

  1268. is

  1269. imperfect

  1270. I'll be

  1271. the

  1272. first

  1273. person

  1274. to

  1275. admit

  1276. that

  1277. and

  1278. yes

  1279. we are

  1280. hospitable

  1281. for

  1282. sinners

  1283. but let's

  1284. not forget

  1285. that the

  1286. church

  1287. of

  1288. Christ

  1289. is

  1290. also

  1291. the

  1292. bride

  1293. and

  1294. the

  1295. wife

  1296. of

  1297. the

  1298. lamb

  1299. people

  1300. say

  1301. things

  1302. about

  1303. Jesus

  1304. wife

  1305. to

  1306. my

  1307. face

  1308. that

  1309. they

  1310. will

  1311. never

  1312. dare

  1313. to

  1314. say

  1315. about

  1316. my

  1317. wife

  1318. Hannah

  1319. and

  1320. trust me

  1321. Jesus

  1322. is a

  1323. lot

  1324. more

  1325. awesome

  1326. a lot

  1327. more

  1328. to be

  1329. feared

  1330. yes

  1331. we must

  1332. at times

  1333. speak

  1334. as a

  1335. prophetic

  1336. witness

  1337. against

  1338. the

  1339. sins

  1340. of the

  1341. church

  1342. but

  1343. when we

  1344. do

  1345. we

  1346. must

  1347. do

  1348. so

  1349. with

  1350. profound

  1351. humility

  1352. and out

  1353. of love

  1354. not out

  1355. of pride

  1356. and

  1357. immaturity

  1358. Jeff

  1359. Eorg

  1360. who is

  1361. the

  1362. president

  1363. of

  1364. gateway

  1365. seminary

  1366. begins

  1367. his

  1368. book

  1369. the

  1370. character

  1371. of

  1372. leadership

  1373. this

  1374. way

  1375. he

  1376. says

  1377. quote

  1378. in

  1379. my

  1380. 20s

  1381. I

  1382. was

  1383. determined

  1384. to

  1385. change

  1386. the

  1387. world

  1388. in

  1389. my

  1390. 30s

  1391. I

  1392. tried

  1393. to

  1394. reform

  1395. the

  1396. church

  1397. in

  1398. my

  1399. early

  1400. 40s

  1401. I

  1402. discovered

  1403. I

  1404. was

  1405. the

  1406. problem

  1407. the

  1408. church

  1409. is

  1410. imperfect

  1411. yes

  1412. why

  1413. because

  1414. you

  1415. and

  1416. because

  1417. I

  1418. am

  1419. a

  1420. part

  1421. of

  1422. it

  1423. but

  1424. even

  1425. still

  1426. it

  1427. is

  1428. the

  1429. bride

  1430. the

  1431. wife

  1432. of

  1433. the

  1434. lamb

  1435. of

  1436. God

  1437. so

  1438. let

  1439. us

  1440. treat

  1441. her

  1442. and

  1443. let

  1444. us

  1445. speak

  1446. to

  1447. her

  1448. and

  1449. speak

  1450. of

  1451. her

  1452. with

  1453. the

  1454. dignity

  1455. that

  1456. she

  1457. deserves

  1458. and

  1459. secondly

  1460. let

  1461. us

  1462. not

  1463. forget

  1464. the

  1465. church's

  1466. eternal

  1467. destiny

  1468. yes

  1469. we're

  1470. beset

  1471. with

  1472. sin

  1473. and

  1474. sore

  1475. oppressed

  1476. here

  1477. and

  1478. now

  1479. but

  1480. our

  1481. eternal

  1482. destiny

  1483. is

  1484. the

  1485. new

  1486. Jerusalem

  1487. made

  1488. of

  1489. pure

  1490. gold

  1491. like

  1492. jewels

  1493. there's

  1494. a

  1495. fairy

  1496. tale

  1497. that

  1498. I

  1499. enjoyed

  1500. reading

  1501. as a

  1502. child

  1503. I

  1504. didn't

  1505. have

  1506. that

  1507. many

  1508. books

  1509. growing up

  1510. so I

  1511. read

  1512. this one

  1513. over and

  1514. over again

  1515. it's called

  1516. The Ugly

  1517. Duckling

  1518. have you guys

  1519. read that

  1520. before

  1521. I think

  1522. Disney made

  1523. a movie

  1524. of it

  1525. or something

  1526. it was

  1527. written by

  1528. Danish

  1529. poet

  1530. Hans

  1531. Christian

  1532. Andersen

  1533. in the

  1534. 19th

  1535. century

  1536. mama

  1537. duck

  1538. lays

  1539. eggs

  1540. and

  1541. keeps

  1542. them

  1543. warm

  1544. so

  1545. that

  1546. they

  1547. hatch

  1548. and

  1549. then

  1550. they

  1551. all

  1552. hatch

  1553. except

  1554. for

  1555. one

  1556. which

  1557. takes

  1558. some

  1559. extra

  1560. work

  1561. it's

  1562. an

  1563. unusual

  1564. looking

  1565. egg

  1566. and

  1567. when

  1568. that

  1569. egg

  1570. hatches

  1571. the

  1572. duckling

  1573. that

  1574. comes

  1575. out

  1576. is

  1577. not

  1578. like

  1579. the

  1580. others

  1581. he

  1582. says

  1583. in

  1584. the

  1585. book

  1586. yet

  1587. yet

  1588. my

  1589. goodness

  1590. how

  1591. different

  1592. this

  1593. one

  1594. looked

  1595. he

  1596. was

  1597. much

  1598. larger

  1599. than

  1600. the

  1601. others

  1602. he

  1603. was

  1604. not

  1605. yellow

  1606. but

  1607. dark

  1608. gray

  1609. all

  1610. over

  1611. and

  1612. after

  1613. he

  1614. stepped

  1615. out

  1616. of

  1617. his

  1618. egg

  1619. he

  1620. walked

  1621. with

  1622. a

  1623. funny

  1624. wobble

  1625. one

  1626. of

  1627. the

  1628. yellow

  1629. ducklings

  1630. pointed

  1631. what's

  1632. that

  1633. he

  1634. can't

  1635. be

  1636. one

  1637. of

  1638. us

  1639. I've

  1640. never

  1641. seen

  1642. such

  1643. an

  1644. ugly

  1645. duckling

  1646. said

  1647. another

  1648. and

  1649. this

  1650. last

  1651. duckling

  1652. this

  1653. ugly

  1654. duckling

  1655. doesn't

  1656. belong

  1657. to

  1658. the

  1659. brood

  1660. and

  1661. is

  1662. driven

  1663. from

  1664. place

  1665. to

  1666. place

  1667. suffering

  1668. much

  1669. verbal

  1670. and

  1671. physical

  1672. abuse

  1673. wherever

  1674. he

  1675. goes

  1676. and

  1677. when

  1678. he

  1679. is

  1680. swimming

  1681. on

  1682. a

  1683. lake

  1684. one

  1685. day

  1686. as

  1687. the

  1688. loner

  1689. he

  1690. is

  1691. a

  1692. flock

  1693. of

  1694. swans

  1695. come

  1696. and

  1697. descend

  1698. upon

  1699. that

  1700. lake

  1701. and

  1702. frolic

  1703. around

  1704. him

  1705. and

  1706. by

  1707. then

  1708. he

  1709. is

  1710. used

  1711. to

  1712. being

  1713. bullied

  1714. and

  1715. pushed

  1716. around

  1717. and

  1718. so

  1719. he

  1720. says

  1721. he

  1722. anticipates

  1723. what

  1724. they

  1725. will

  1726. say

  1727. and

  1728. he

  1729. says

  1730. oh

  1731. don't

  1732. worry

  1733. I'm

  1734. leaving

  1735. I

  1736. won't

  1737. make

  1738. any

  1739. trouble

  1740. for

  1741. you

  1742. but

  1743. as

  1744. he

  1745. puts

  1746. his

  1747. head

  1748. down

  1749. and

  1750. starts

  1751. to

  1752. swim

  1753. away

  1754. from

  1755. the

  1756. flock

  1757. of

  1758. swans

  1759. he

  1760. sees

  1761. a

  1762. beautiful

  1763. swan

  1764. that

  1765. is

  1766. following

  1767. him

  1768. and

  1769. he

  1770. why

  1771. is

  1772. this

  1773. swan

  1774. following

  1775. me

  1776. so

  1777. closely

  1778. but

  1779. then

  1780. he

  1781. notices

  1782. that

  1783. every

  1784. time

  1785. he

  1786. moves

  1787. this

  1788. swan's

  1789. movement

  1790. reflects

  1791. his

  1792. own

  1793. movements

  1794. and

  1795. then

  1796. he

  1797. comes

  1798. to

  1799. the

  1800. realization

  1801. oh

  1802. I've

  1803. never

  1804. been

  1805. a

  1806. duck

  1807. I'm

  1808. a

  1809. swan

  1810. a

  1811. beautiful

  1812. swan

  1813. and

  1814. he's

  1815. welcome

  1816. to

  1817. the

  1818. flock

  1819. and

  1820. then

  1821. he

  1822. soars

  1823. and

  1824. flies

  1825. away

  1826. with

  1827. the

  1828. rest

  1829. of

  1830. his

  1831. family

  1832. and

  1833. if

  1834. those

  1835. bullying

  1836. animals

  1837. knew

  1838. what

  1839. this

  1840. ugly

  1841. duckling

  1842. was

  1843. they

  1844. would

  1845. not

  1846. have

  1847. treated

  1848. him

  1849. that

  1850. way

  1851. my

  1852. brothers

  1853. and

  1854. sisters

  1855. the

  1856. church

  1857. of

  1858. Christ

  1859. is

  1860. no

  1861. ugly

  1862. duckling

  1863. your

  1864. majestic

  1865. swan

  1866. that

  1867. has

  1868. not

  1869. yet

  1870. fully

  1871. spread

  1872. out

  1873. its

  1874. wings

  1875. to

  1876. fly

  1877. so

  1878. choose

  1879. your

  1880. treasure

  1881. carefully

  1882. our

  1883. eternal

  1884. destiny

  1885. is

  1886. the

  1887. new

  1888. Jerusalem

  1889. in

  1890. a

  1891. new

  1892. heaven

  1893. and

  1894. a

  1895. new

  1896. earth

  1897. when

  1912. when

  1915. MIT

  1916. and

  1917. Oxford

  1918. are

  2321. with

  2322. Christ

  2323. in

  2326. I
