  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. For those of you who don't know who I am, my name is Andrew Rim, and I'm a pastoral intern

  3. here at Trinity Cambridge Church, and a current seminary student who is finishing up his degree.

  4. And with Sean gone for the next few weeks on vacation, it's my joy and pleasure to be

  5. able to bring God's word to you guys this morning.

  6. And so without further ado, if you could turn your Bibles, if you have one, to Revelation

    Revelation 21:22

  7. chapter 21, verse 22.

  8. For those of you who don't have a Bible, please raise your hand and someone can give you a

  9. copy from our table.

  10. Revelation chapter 21, verse 22, to chapter 22, verse 5.

    Revelation 21:22

  11. Please join me in prayer for the reading and preaching of God's word this morning.

  12. Heavenly Father, we thank you so much that you are our God, seated on the throne, and that

  13. you give us access to you to be able to worship you, to adore you, to pour out all honor and

  14. glory.

  15. Lord, we thank you that you are such a gracious and loving God.

  16. And Lord, we thank you that you give us your word to equip us with every need, to satisfy

  17. us, to nourish us, to grow us in the spirit, so that one day when you and the kingdom of

  18. our Lord Jesus Christ returns, we may be perfected with you, Lord.

  19. And so, Lord, as we come across this beautiful passage coming into the river of life, Lord,

  20. stir our hearts that we yearn for the living waters, Lord.

  21. Stir our hearts so that we yearn for the eternal light that is to come through new Jerusalem, the new creation, Lord.

  22. Help us to be faithful stewards of the gospel here and now, Lord.

  23. We pray all this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  24. Please stand as you're willing and able for the reading of God's word.

  25. Revelation chapter 21, verse 22 to chapter 22, verse 5.

    Revelation 21:22

  26. And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God, the Almighty, and the Lamb.

  27. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.

  28. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it,

  29. and its gates will never be shut by day, and there will be no night there.

  30. They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations, but nothing unclean will ever enter it,

  31. nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life.

  32. Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal,

  33. flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city.

  34. Also on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit,

  35. yielding its fruit each month.

  36. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

  37. No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it,

  38. and his servants will worship him.

  39. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads,

  40. and night will be no more.

  41. They will need no light of lamp or sun,

  42. for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.

  43. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  44. You may be seated.

  45. Back in 2016, the city of Flint, Michigan, faced a federal state of emergency

  46. because traces of poisonous lead were found in their water systems.

  47. This was due to the oversight and poor management of the city's water pipes

  48. by the Flint city officials.

  49. And after a number of court investigations and hundreds of millions of dollars

  50. spent on legal settlements and repairing these corroded pipes,

  51. Flint's water was declared clean and drinkable later in the year of 2016.

  52. But the damage had been done.

  53. Many residents of Flint, Michigan, to this day,

  54. still don't drink the water straight from the tap

  55. because they still do not trust the source of the water.

  56. Here in the state of Massachusetts, according to the U.S. News,

  57. we rank fifth in the entire United States for our drinking water quality.

  58. We're in fifth place.

  59. We have the best drinking water in all of New England, for that matter.

  60. The next best New England state is Rhode Island,

  61. and they come in 20th place.

  62. Yikes.

  63. And yet, even still, even though our drinking water quality is this good,

  64. many of us here are still proactive and careful with our water sources.

  65. We install water filters like Brita and Pure into our sinks,

  66. our faucets, and our water dispensers.

  67. Some of us opt to buy the Costco 40-pack water bottles,

  68. and we just drink straight out of that.

  69. And some of us even have our own personal rankings

  70. of the best-tasting water bottle brands,

  71. from Awkwafina to Smart Water to Evian to Poland Springs to Fiji

  72. to the Whole Foods Asparagus water.

  73. All this we do because we care about where our water is sourced from.

  74. We want to be certain that we aren't harming ourselves

  75. with unclean and contaminated water.

  76. And so we're careful about the source of our water.

  77. Brothers and sisters, as followers of God and the Lamb that is Jesus,

  78. we must also be vigilant of the source of our spiritual water.

  79. What is the source of our living waters?

  80. What satisfies us and nourishes us in this life?

  81. Last week in Revelation chapter 21,

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  82. Sean exhorted us to choose our treasures carefully.

  83. For where our treasure is, there our hearts will be also.

  84. In the same way, we need to pay attention to the sources of our waters,

  85. of what nourishes and satisfies us in our lives today.

  86. Does living water from the throne of God and of the Lamb satisfy us?

  87. Or does our water come from the darkness of this world,

  88. which will only satisfy for a short while,

  89. before leaving us emptier than ever before?

  90. The answer to this question is of utmost importance.

  91. Because the source of our water,

  92. the source of our living water,

  93. is a matter of spiritual and eternal life and death.

  94. This morning, we're at the end points of Revelation.

  95. We're finally at Revelation chapter 22,

    Revelation 22 chapter mention

  96. the final chapter,

  97. where John, he sees in his vision

  98. that the kingdom of God has been fully inaugurated.

  99. Evil has been utterly vanquished,

  100. and the new Jerusalem has been established

  101. as the new heavens and the new earth.

  102. John then sees in Revelation 22,

  103. the river of the water of life in New Jerusalem,

  104. one that flows from the throne of God and the Lamb

  105. through the center of New Jerusalem.

  106. And this river, it yields abundant fruit

  107. from the tree of life.

  108. It heals nations,

  109. and it makes the city pure from anything accursed.

  110. This, this is the water that we should be longing for,

  111. the river of living water.

  112. We must draw near to this living water,

  113. whose source is from the Lord God and the Lamb,

  114. the light of the world, who is Jesus.

  115. And so this is our main point for our passage this morning.

  116. We should live our lives faithfully

  117. to the light of the world, that is Jesus,

  118. and the Lord God,

  119. whose throne is the source of living water.

  120. And so I'm going to touch on two major features

  121. of our passage this morning.

  122. First, the eternal light,

  123. and second, the river of life.

  124. Revelation chapter 21, verse 22,

    Revelation 21:22

  125. and I saw no temple in the city,

  126. for its temple is the Lord God,

  127. the Almighty, and the Lamb.

  128. In the Old Testament,

  129. the prophet Ezekiel envisioned,

  130. in Ezekiel chapter 40 to 43,

    Ezekiel 40 chapter mention

  131. the rebuilding of the temple of God,

  132. after it had been destroyed

  133. by the Babylonian Empire.

  134. However, now,

  135. in John's vision of New Jerusalem,

  136. there is not a physical temple in sight

  137. in the city.

  138. John gives the reason why this is so,

  139. for its temple is the Lord God,

  140. the Almighty, and the Lamb.

  141. In the Old Testament,

  142. the temple was built as a dwelling place

  143. for the Lord God,

  144. and as the meeting place

  145. for God's people to worship him,

  146. whose presence was in the Ark of the Covenant

  147. inside of the temple.

  148. In Exodus,

  149. Moses built the tabernacle

  150. as a portable way for Israel

  151. to carry the presence of God

  152. until they reached the promised land.

  153. And once Israel was established

  154. as a nation and a kingdom,

  155. King Solomon built the temple

  156. to more permanently

  157. host the presence of God

  158. at which all of Israel would gather

  159. to worship Yahweh.

  160. But the Old Testament prophets later,

  161. they envisioned an even greater temple

  162. in the future.

  163. Haggai chapter 2 prophesied

    Haggai 2 chapter mention

  164. that the latter glory of this house,

  165. which is the temple,

  166. will be greater than the former.

  167. Jeremiah chapter 3 prophesied

    Jeremiah 3 chapter mention

  168. of a day when God's people

  169. will no longer say

  170. the Ark of the Covenant.

  171. And neither the temple

  172. nor the Ark of the Covenant

  173. will come to mind

  174. or be remembered

  175. or be missed

  176. by God's people.

  177. These prophecies are fulfilled

  178. here in New Jerusalem.

  179. God's dwelling place

  180. is no longer

  181. the physical structure

  182. of the temple.

  183. Instead,

  184. the Lord God

  185. and the Lamb

  186. are fully present

  187. face to face

  188. with the new creation

  189. in the New Jerusalem.

  190. The temple,

  191. a gathering place

  192. to worship God,

  193. had been fulfilled

  194. in the new city.

  195. This also means

  196. that the church today,

  197. including our own

  198. gathered body

  199. of believers here,

  200. will be perfected

  201. and fulfilled

  202. when the Lord

  203. is fully present

  204. in the new Jerusalem.

  205. In the new city,

  206. those who have been faithful

  207. to the testimony of Jesus

  208. will no longer

  209. need to gather

  210. in a building,

  211. in a structure

  212. to worship their God.

  213. Because God now dwells

  214. among his people there.

  215. We'll have unfiltered,

  216. unparalleled access

  217. to worship our Lord God.

  218. You guys,

  219. how much greater

  220. will our worship

  221. be in New Jerusalem

  222. when we're able

  223. to clearly see

  224. with our very own eyes

  225. who it is

  226. that we give

  227. our honor

  228. and glory to?

  229. How amazing

  230. it's going to be

  231. that when we sing,

  232. behold our God,

  233. behold the Lamb,

  234. here I am to worship

  235. right in front

  236. of the Lord God,

  237. being able to see

  238. him face to face.

  239. That's such an amazing sight,

  240. amazing hope for us

  241. that we'll be

  242. face to face

  243. in direct relationship

  244. and communion

  245. with our Lord God,

  246. the very one

  247. that we worship.

  248. John continues

  249. in his vision

  250. of New Jerusalem

  251. and sees

  252. that the city

  253. of Jerusalem,

  254. New Jerusalem,

  255. has no need

  256. of sun or moon

  257. to shine on it.

  258. For the glory of God

  259. gives it light

  260. and its lamp

  261. is lamb.

  262. We see the same idea

  263. evoked later

  264. at the end of our passage

  265. in Revelation 22, 5.

  266. And the night

  267. will be no more.

  268. The servants of God

  269. will need no light

  270. of lamp or sun

  271. for the Lord God

  272. will be their light

  273. and they will reign

  274. forever and ever.

  275. These two verses

  276. are a direct fulfillment

  277. of the prophecy

  278. in Isaiah chapter 60.

    Isaiah 60 chapter mention

  279. The sun shall be

  280. no more your light

  281. by day,

  282. nor for brightness

  283. shall the moon

  284. give you light,

  285. but the Lord

  286. will be your everlasting light

  287. and your God

  288. will be your glory.

  289. Isaiah and John,

  290. they're not trying

  291. to say that the sun

  292. and the moon

  293. will be completely

  294. non-existent

  295. in the New Jerusalem.

  296. Their point is that

  297. the sun and the moon's

  298. function as bearers

  299. of light during the day

  300. and the night

  301. will not be necessary

  302. anymore.

  303. And that's because

  304. God's glory

  305. and the light

  306. of his son Jesus,

  307. the Lamb,

  308. will illuminate

  309. the new city

  310. both day and night.

  311. In James 1.17,

  312. God is called

  313. the Father of lights.

  314. 1 John 1.5

  315. proclaims that

  316. God is light

  317. and in him

  318. is no darkness at all.

  319. In the Gospel of John,

  320. Jesus calls himself

  321. the light of the world

  322. who stepped into

  323. this dark world

  324. to open our eyes

  325. to God's salvific work

  326. through him.

  327. The Lamb of God

  328. acted as the lamp

  329. to God's glory.

  330. Jesus was the word

  331. in the beginning

  332. who was with God

  333. and was God

  334. and in the word

  335. was life

  336. and the life

  337. was the light

  338. of men.

  339. John 1.

  340. The light of God's glory

  341. and the Lamb

  342. will shine on

  343. the new Jerusalem

  344. day and night.

  345. This is John's way

  346. of again emphasizing

  347. that God's presence

  348. will be directly

  349. among his people

  350. in the new city

  351. and his presence

  352. will never go away.

  353. God will be with us

  354. as our eternal light

  355. day and night

  356. forever.

  357. This light

  358. from the glory of God

  359. and the Lamb

  360. in New Jerusalem

  361. will also accompany

  362. the nations

  363. and the kings

  364. of the earth

  365. will bring their glory

  366. into the light.

  367. This again

  368. is a fulfillment

  369. of Isaiah 60.

  370. And nations

  371. shall come to your light

  372. and kings

  373. to the brightness

  374. of your rising.

  375. The wealth

  376. of the nations

  377. shall come to you.

  378. The wealth

  379. of the nations

  380. shall come to you.

  381. Throughout Revelation

  382. we see Jesus

  383. and his angels

  384. of the Lord

  385. issue out warnings

  386. to all of the nations

  387. of the final day

  388. of judgment.

  389. And they call out

  390. to repent

  391. of idolatry

  392. in order to be

  393. preserved by God.

  394. Revelation chapter 14

    Revelation 14:7

  395. verse 7

  396. is one example

  397. of this.

  398. An angel cries out

  399. to every nation

  400. and tribe

  401. and language

  402. and people

  403. and it cries out

  404. fear God

  405. and give him glory

  406. because the hour

  407. of his judgment

  408. has come.

  409. In John's vision

  410. the nations

  411. who heeded

  412. these warnings

  413. and repented

  414. and turned their allegiance

  415. to God

  416. and to Jesus

  417. are able to walk

  418. in the light

  419. of God's glory

  420. and enter into

  421. the city

  422. of New Jerusalem.

  423. While other passages

  424. in Revelation

  425. refer to

  426. the kings of the earth

  427. as the wicked

  428. unrepentant rulers

  429. who have received

  430. judgment

  431. from God

  432. here John

  433. is referring

  434. to the kings

  435. of the earth

  436. who had received

  437. the angels warnings

  438. and obeyed

  439. the call

  440. to repentance

  441. and submitted

  442. themselves

  443. to the lamb

  444. and to the testimony

  445. of Jesus.

  446. These are the kings

  447. and nations

  448. who will be welcomed

  449. into the city

  450. and they will bring

  451. their glory

  452. into it.

  453. The Isaiah 60 prophecy

  454. speaks of the nations

  455. bringing material wealth

  456. into Israel.

  457. The wealth of the nations

  458. shall come to you.

  459. They bring their material riches

  460. and wealth

  461. into Israel.

  462. John then changes

  463. the language in Revelation

  464. from wealth

  465. to glory.

  466. The nations

  467. and kings

  468. will bring glory

  469. into New Jerusalem

  470. as it says

  471. in verse 24.

  472. And we see later

  473. in verse 26

  474. that they will bring glory

  475. and honor.

  476. What John is saying here

  477. is that the kings

  478. are bringing into New Jerusalem

  479. not material riches

  480. and wealth

  481. but rather glory

  482. and honor

  483. coming from the nations.

  484. The kings and nations

  485. are brought into

  486. the New Jerusalem

  487. by the invitation

  488. of the lamb

  489. to worship

  490. the Lord God

  491. in glory

  492. and honor

  493. to worship him.

  494. There's no longer

  495. any personal riches

  496. or accolades

  497. or boastings

  498. of self

  499. that are to be brought

  500. into the city

  501. of New Jerusalem

  502. but only the glory

  503. and honor

  504. that is due

  505. to God

  506. and to Jesus Christ

  507. the lamb

  508. in worship.

  509. Brothers and sisters

  510. we have no material wealth.

  511. We have no personal riches

  512. to offer to God

  513. because God

  514. already has

  515. these things.

  516. In fact

  517. he has infinitely

  518. better things

  519. beyond our imagination.

  520. God doesn't need

  521. our money.

  522. He doesn't need

  523. our savings.

  524. He doesn't need

  525. our prizes

  526. and our trophies.

  527. He doesn't need

  528. our social status

  529. and influence.

  530. When we as faithful

  531. believers of Christ

  532. are invited

  533. into the New Jerusalem

  534. we have nothing

  535. to bring with us

  536. except for our worship

  537. to bestow

  538. our Lord God

  539. in honor

  540. and glory.

  541. Amen?

  542. Continuing on

  543. the nations

  544. and the kings

  545. they enter

  546. into New Jerusalem

  547. through New Jerusalem's

  548. open gates.

  549. These gates

  550. will never be shut

  551. by day

  552. and also by night

  553. because there will be

  554. no night.

  555. The gates

  556. to New Jerusalem

  557. will be open

  558. night and day

  559. for all eternity.

  560. In last week's sermon

  561. Sean had described

  562. the unassailable

  563. security

  564. of the New Jerusalem.

  565. The walls

  566. of New Jerusalem

  567. were 12,000

  568. stadia tall.

  569. 1,400 miles tall.

  570. And its walls

  571. were as thick

  572. as the length

  573. of a professional

  574. soccer field.

  575. No enemy

  576. would be able

  577. to breach

  578. these walls.

  579. No enemy

  580. would be able

  581. to breach

  582. the walls

  583. of New Jerusalem

  584. even in secret

  585. even in the dark

  586. of night.

  587. So why would

  588. such an

  589. impenetrable city

  590. choose to leave

  591. its gates

  592. wide open

  593. never to be shut?

  594. That's because

  595. there are no longer

  596. any enemies.

  597. Because there is

  598. no more night

  599. in the world.

  600. There will be

  601. no night

  602. in New Jerusalem.

  603. John is using

  604. the word night

  605. figuratively

  606. to refer

  607. to the darkness

  608. and evil

  609. that dim God's

  610. glory

  611. in this world.

  612. In the Gospels

  613. of Matthew,

  614. Mark,

  615. and Luke

  616. when Jesus

  617. was crucified

  618. it was said

  619. that at noon

  620. there was darkness

  621. over all the land.

  622. The darkness

  623. took over

  624. when the Son

  625. of God

  626. was crucified

  627. and killed.

  628. But three days

  629. later,

  630. the angels

  631. of the Lord

  632. appeared before

  633. Jesus' followers

  634. in dazzling

  635. brightness

  636. and light

  637. to announce

  638. that the Savior

  639. had resurrected

  640. and conquered

  641. death.

  642. For John

  643. to say

  644. that there is

  645. no night

  646. in New Jerusalem

  647. isn't just

  648. an odd

  649. passing comment

  650. but it's a

  651. triumphant

  652. declaration

  653. that there

  654. will be

  655. no darkness

  656. or evil

  657. that can exist

  658. in the new

  659. creation.

  660. The darkness

  661. and evil

  662. of the enemy

  663. are no more.

  664. There is no need

  665. to worry

  666. or be cautious

  667. about ambushes

  668. or invasions

  669. from the enemy

  670. into the city

  671. because all enemies

  672. of God

  673. have been defeated

  674. already.

  675. We have kings,

  676. we have nations,

  677. we have tribes

  678. and tongues

  679. from all over

  680. the earth

  681. that will enter

  682. into the gates

  683. of New Jerusalem

  684. and there is

  685. absolute certainty

  686. and security

  687. that not one

  688. of them,

  689. not even one

  690. of them

  691. will bring

  692. wickedness

  693. and evil

  694. into the light

  695. of God's

  696. new creation

  697. because night

  698. and darkness

  699. are no more.

  700. When I was

  701. in elementary

  702. school

  703. and in middle

  704. school

  705. and also maybe

  706. in high school

  707. I was really

  708. afraid of the dark.

  709. In our house

  710. we had a basement

  711. where we would

  712. often store things

  713. and whenever I had

  714. to go down

  715. into the basement

  716. I was so afraid

  717. that something

  718. would pop out

  719. of the dark

  720. and get me.

  721. One year

  722. it was ghosts.

  723. Another year

  724. it was Darth Vader.

  725. To cope with this fear

  726. to deal with this

  727. being afraid

  728. of the dark

  729. as I went

  730. as I went down

  731. those stairs

  732. I would often

  733. sing

  734. whatever worship

  735. song that I knew

  736. in my head.

  737. I would literally

  738. go down the stairs

  739. and be like

  740. I love the world

  741. you step down

  742. into darkness

  743. and then

  744. scurry down

  745. those stairs

  746. and run straight

  747. back up

  748. as quickly

  749. as I could.

  750. The most

  751. comforting

  752. and relieving

  753. sight for me

  754. as I ran back

  755. up those stairs

  756. though

  757. was the faint

  758. outline

  759. of light

  760. on my basement

  761. door.

  762. That faint

  763. outline

  764. that you see

  765. through the cracks

  766. and I knew

  767. oh my gosh

  768. once I go

  769. through those doors

  770. I'm going to be

  771. back in the light

  772. Darth Vader

  773. won't be chasing

  774. me anymore

  775. to tell me

  776. that he's my father.

  777. No more of that.

  778. And so I would

  779. run up those stairs

  780. and burst out

  781. to the door

  782. into the light

  783. of my living room

  784. and I would feel

  785. safe

  786. and secure.

  787. Brothers and sisters

  788. scripture

  789. scripture

  790. gives us

  791. that faint

  792. outline

  793. of light

  794. and it's

  795. getting brighter

  796. and brighter

  797. through the coming

  798. of God's

  799. radiant kingdom

  800. and the new

  801. Jerusalem

  802. and that should

  803. fill us

  804. with great hope

  805. and comfort

  806. and relief

  807. in the dark

  808. days that we

  809. live in

  810. today.

  811. For those of you

  812. who may feel

  813. distressed

  814. by all this

  815. darkness in our

  816. world

  817. wars

  818. disease

  819. famine

  820. the evil

  821. schemes

  822. of man

  823. or for those

  824. of you

  825. who may be

  826. feeling so

  827. discouraged

  828. by the darkness

  829. of your own

  830. struggles

  831. and sin

  832. there is hope

  833. in the light

  834. of the coming

  835. kingdom of our

  836. Lord God

  837. and so believe

  838. in God's

  839. victory

  840. over darkness

  841. and hold on

  842. to the testimony

  843. of Jesus.

  844. There will be

  845. a day

  846. when night

  847. will be no more.

  848. Darkness

  849. and evil

  850. will be

  851. totally

  852. vanquished

  853. and there

  854. will be

  855. absolute

  856. security

  857. in the

  858. brilliant

  859. light

  860. of our

  861. savior

  862. Jesus.

  863. Because

  864. Jesus

  865. has

  866. vanquished

  867. all evil

  868. any

  869. unclean

  870. thing

  871. and anyone

  872. who has

  873. not repented

  874. of their

  875. detestable

  876. and false

  877. things

  878. will not

  879. be able

  880. to enter

  881. into the

  882. new

  883. Jerusalem

  884. even

  885. with

  886. those

  887. gates

  888. wide

  889. open

  890. day

  891. and

  892. night.

  893. This

  894. means

  895. that

  896. anyone

  897. who

  898. has

  899. defiled

  900. themselves

  901. in sin

  902. that God

  903. so abhors

  904. and has

  905. not repented

  906. and allowed

  907. for the

  908. blood of

  909. Jesus

  910. to wash

  911. over

  912. their sins

  913. will not

  914. be able

  915. to enter.

  916. This

  917. means

  918. that

  919. those

  920. who have

  921. given

  922. themselves

  923. away

  924. to the

  925. lies

  926. of the

  927. enemy

  928. and have

  929. acted

  930. on those

  931. lies

  932. into

  933. acts

  934. of

  935. deception

  936. like

  937. adultery

  938. murder

  939. bearing

  940. false

  941. testimony

  942. and

  943. stealing

  944. they

  945. will

  946. not

  947. be

  948. able

  949. to

  950. enter

  951. into

  952. the

  953. city

  954. of

  955. New

  956. Jerusalem.

  957. Church

  958. we

  959. too

  960. have

  961. committed

  962. these

  963. grave

  964. sins

  965. time

  966. and

  967. time

  968. again.

  969. We've

  970. been

  971. adulteries

  972. we've

  973. told

  974. lies

  975. we've

  976. stolen

  977. God's

  978. glory

  979. we've

  980. become

  981. idolaters

  982. in the

  983. things

  984. of this

  985. world

  986. and

  987. time

  988. and

  989. time

  990. again

  991. we've

  992. fallen

  993. short

  994. of the

  995. glory

  996. of

  997. God

  998. but

  999. the

  1000. difference

  1001. the

  1002. difference

  1003. as

  1004. believers

  1005. of

  1006. Jesus

  1007. Christ

  1008. is

  1009. that

  1010. by

  1011. the

  1012. grace

  1013. of

  1014. God

  1015. we

  1016. have

  1017. recognized

  1018. our

  1019. need

  1020. for

  1021. a

  1022. savior

  1023. we

  1024. recognize

  1025. this

  1026. need

  1027. this

  1028. need

  1029. for

  1030. someone

  1031. to

  1032. save

  1033. us

  1034. of

  1035. our

  1036. sins

  1037. and

  1038. by

  1039. faith

  1040. in

  1041. Jesus

  1042. we

  1043. have

  1044. repented

  1045. of

  1046. those

  1047. detestable

  1048. and

  1049. false

  1050. things

  1051. and

  1052. claimed

  1053. our

  1054. allegiance

  1055. to

  1056. Christ

  1057. evil

  1058. doers

  1059. and

  1060. the

  1061. wicked

  1062. will

  1063. not

  1064. have

  1065. their

  1066. names

  1067. written

  1068. in the

  1069. book

  1070. of

  1071. life

  1072. and

  1073. they

  1074. will

  1075. be

  1076. subject

  1077. to

  1078. eternal

  1079. torment

  1080. and

  1081. suffering

  1082. in the

  1083. lake

  1084. of

  1085. fire

  1086. only

  1087. those

  1088. who

  1089. have

  1090. been

  1091. counted

  1092. righteous

  1093. and

  1094. holy

  1095. by the

  1096. Lord

  1097. God

  1098. those

  1099. whose

  1100. names

  1101. have

  1102. been

  1103. written

  1104. in the

  1105. Lamb's

  1106. book

  1107. of

  1108. life

  1109. will

  1110. enter

  1111. and

  1112. so

  1113. let's

  1114. hope

  1115. and believe

  1116. in the

  1117. light of

  1118. God's

  1119. coming

  1120. kingdom

  1121. and hold

  1122. on to

  1123. the

  1124. testimony

  1125. of

  1126. Jesus

  1127. this

  1128. leads

  1129. to

  1130. our

  1131. second

  1132. feature

  1133. in

  1134. our

  1135. passage

  1136. the

  1137. river

  1138. of

  1139. life

  1140. revelation

    Revelation 22:1–5

  1141. chapter

  1142. 22

  1143. verse

  1144. 1

  1145. to

  1146. 5

  1147. now

  1148. the

  1149. angel

  1150. who's

  1151. guiding

  1152. John's

  1153. vision

  1154. turns

  1155. John's

  1156. attention

  1157. now

  1158. to

  1159. a

  1160. river

  1161. in

  1162. the

  1163. new

  1164. Jerusalem

  1165. this

  1166. river

  1167. is

  1168. bright

  1169. as

  1170. crystal

  1171. as

  1172. radiant

  1173. as

  1174. the

  1175. rest

  1176. of

  1177. the

  1178. city

  1179. which

  1180. is

  1181. adorned

  1182. in

  1183. precious

  1184. stones

  1185. and

  1186. clear

  1187. gold

  1188. as

  1189. it

  1190. said

  1191. in

  1192. revelation

  1193. 21

  1194. John

  1195. calls

  1196. this

  1197. river

  1198. the

  1199. river

  1200. of

  1201. the

  1202. water

  1203. of

  1204. life

  1205. which

  1206. flows

  1207. from

  1208. the

  1209. throne

  1210. of

  1211. God

  1212. and

  1213. of

  1214. the

  1215. lamb

  1216. through

  1217. the

  1218. middle

  1219. of

  1220. the

  1221. street

  1222. this

  1223. river

  1224. should

  1225. be

  1226. reminiscent

  1227. of

  1228. the

  1229. river

  1230. at

  1231. the

  1232. garden

  1233. of

  1234. Eden

  1235. in

  1236. Genesis

  1237. 2

  1238. the

  1239. river

  1240. which

  1241. flowed

  1242. out

  1243. of

  1244. Eden

  1245. to

  1246. water

  1247. the

  1248. garden

  1249. this

  1250. river

  1251. in

  1252. New

  1253. Jerusalem

  1254. flows

  1255. from

  1256. the throne

  1257. of

  1258. God

  1259. and

  1260. of

  1261. the

  1262. lamb

  1263. the

  1264. fulfilled

  1265. temple

  1266. in

  1267. New

  1268. Jerusalem

  1269. there

  1270. is

  1271. only

  1272. one

  1273. throne

  1274. in

  1275. which

  1276. both

  1277. God

  1278. and

  1279. the

  1280. lamb

  1281. Jesus

  1282. are

  1283. seated

  1284. in

  1285. vienen

  1286. and

  1287. the

  1288. God

  1289. the

  1290. son

  1291. have

  1292. a

  1293. shared

  1294. identity

  1295. in

  1296. the

  1297. Holy

  1298. Trinity

  1299. and

  1300. they

  1301. reign

  1302. over

  1303. the

  1304. new

  1305. creation

  1306. as

  1307. the

  1308. one

  1309. Lord

  1310. God

  1311. and

  1312. out

  1313. of

  1314. that

  1315. throne

  1316. flows

  1317. that

  1318. river

  1319. of

  1320. living

  1321. water

  1322. some

  1323. scholars

  1324. think

1325. that the Holy Spirit, the third member of the Trinity, is also represented here in this passage

1326. by the river of living water. I think that this is an appropriate and a beautiful image of the

1327. Holy Trinity in fellowship with one another and with us in the new creation, the new Jerusalem

1328. that is to come. Jesus says in John chapter 7, if anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.

    John 7 chapter mention

1329. Whoever believes in me, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. Now this he said about

1330. the Spirit. Jesus also offers the Samaritan woman in John chapter 4 at the well, living water. Just as

    John 4 chapter mention

1331. the river of living water flows out from the throne of God and of the Lamb, the Holy Spirit proceeds

1332. from God the Father and Jesus the Son. In the same way the Holy Spirit is the living water of new

1333. Jerusalem, the Holy Spirit should be the living water that satisfies us today.

1334. In John chapter 14, Jesus promises his followers to send a helper, the Holy Spirit, to aid them in

    John 14 chapter mention

1335. carrying out the gospel mission. The Holy Spirit is a helper to us to this day, today. The Spirit

1336. indwells those who believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ and seals them permanently as God's chosen

1337. people. The Holy Spirit convicts us of our sins. The Spirit illuminates scripture so that we may

1338. understand God's word. He transforms and sanctifies us to be more like Jesus and helps us to bear good

1339. fruit in our words and our deeds. And the Holy Spirit does all these things for the glory of God,

1340. so that glorifying God may be the center of our lives. This is why the river of the water of life

1341. flows through the center of New Jerusalem, to lead its inhabitants to worship at the central throne

1342. of God and of the Lamb, the source of this living water. Brothers and sisters, are we fully relying

1343. on the living water of the Holy Spirit to aid us in living a life that is faithful to Christ?

1344. Are we submitting to the Spirit to convict us of our sins and to convict us to God's word? Are we trusting

1345. in the Spirit to equip us and empower us to speak and act in a godly manner? Is the Spirit moving us to

1346. fervent and earnest worship of our Lord God? If we're relying on the Holy Spirit fully, our entire lives will be

1347. transformed so that glorifying God will be the central focus of our living. Church, our sinful world tempts us

1348. to quench our thirst with unclean water. Unclean water that will never fully satisfy. And drinking from

1349. this unclean water will ultimately lead us to eternal suffering, because it will cause us to turn away

1350. from the Lord God Almighty into the lake of fire. No matter how much money, no matter how much fame or

1351. influence we try to chase after in this lifetime, no matter how much riches we try to acquire and accrue

1352. and save up in this life, these waters, none of these things will satisfy us. They'll leave us thirstier

1353. and greedier than ever before. At the end of our lives and at the end of the age, all these man-made riches

1354. and prestige will perish and crumble to dust. But what will remain is the eternal kingdom of God,

1355. a new heaven and a new earth, the new Jerusalem, where the stream of living water will lead us to

1356. eternal worship and fellowship with our triune God. And so let us look into the waters of our own lives

1357. and examine whether our living water is indeed being sourced from God, the Lamb and the Holy Spirit.

1358. In the second half of verse 2, John's vision continues to reference the Garden of Eden, this time with the Tree of Life.

1359. The Tree of Life in New Jerusalem is found on either side of the river.

1360. This is weird because there's only one Tree of Life. How can it be on either side of the river?

1361. We can see that singular tree as a collective singular noun. This is some Greek grammar, sorry.

1362. But a collective singular as this one tree is representing multiple trees.

1363. Since it's found to be on either side of the river.

1364. This will be consistent to the prophecy in Ezekiel 47, where on both sides of the river,

1365. there will grow all kinds of tree for food.

1366. In the New Jerusalem then, the original Tree of Life from the Garden of Eden has become multiple

1367. trees of life, all flanking the river through the center of New Jerusalem.

1368. The river of living water, it nourishes these trees of life,

1369. and causes them to bear 12 kinds of fruit,

1370. yielding its fruit each month.

1371. The trees will yield their 12 kinds of fruit every month.

1372. In our fallen world, there are only certain seasons in which fruits are ripe.

1373. Else they will taste bitter or sour, or are withered, or do not grow at all.

1374. John's vision shows us that seasons will be no more.

1375. There is no harvest season.

1376. There is no planting season.

1377. The trees will yield fruit each month,

1378. and the fruit will be abundantly available

1379. to be enjoyed by the inhabitants of New Jerusalem all year long.

1380. In Revelation chapter 2, Jesus promises to the church in Ephesus

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

1381. that the one who conquers, I will grant to eat of the Tree of Life,

1382. which is the paradise of God.

1383. In the paradise of new creation in New Jerusalem,

1384. there will be no times of hunger or lack of resources.

1385. Just as God will be readily available,

1386. His presence will be readily available at all times,

1387. He'll always and eternally be present in New Jerusalem.

1388. His providence and His sustenance

1389. will be readily available all year long for all eternity.

1390. And so those who are faithful to the testimony of Jesus

1391. will be eternally satisfied by God and His providence,

1392. and they will lack in nothing.

1393. And not only the fruit will be the thing that will satisfy us,

1394. we see that the leaves of the Tree of Life,

1395. they provide the great effects of healing of the nations.

1396. The Tree of Life will have leaves that provide healing.

1397. A while ago, I was told that you can put the peels of bananas

1398. onto your skin where there are bug bites

1399. to help soothe any sort of itching or inflammation.

1400. I'm not sure if this is a credible source,

1401. but it worked for me.

  1402. Like, the itching disappeared,

1403. and there was no more swelling for a bit, for a bit.

1404. But after 30 minutes or so,

1405. the bite would start to itch and burn again,

1406. and I would have to slap on a new leaf,

  1407. another banana peel,

1408. onto my skin to soothe it again.

1409. Church, while leaves and medicinal herbs today

1410. can only provide a temporary fix

1411. to our pains in the natural world,

1412. the leaves of the Tree of Life

1413. are for eternal healing and health of the nations.

1414. of those who put their faith in Jesus Christ

1415. and are welcomed into the city.

  1416. Eternal healing and health.

1417. This means that there will be no sickness

1418. nor pain in the new Jerusalem.

1419. There will be no flu,

  1420. no COVID-19,

  1421. no broken bones,

  1422. no cancer,

1423. no chronic achings and conditions,

  1424. no death

  1425. that will be,

1426. that will need to be healed

1427. or reversed in the new creation.

1428. The leaves of healing from the Tree of Life

1429. represent the once for all,

  1430. the final,

  1431. the eternal relief

1432. from all pains and sufferings of God's people.

1433. And that has been accomplished

1434. by Jesus upon His return

  1435. when He comes again.

1436. There will be a day

  1437. when Jesus returns

1438. and wipes away our tears of sorrow

  1439. once and for all,

  1440. as Revelation 7 and 21 proclaim.

1441. And in the same way,

1442. there will be a day

  1443. when Jesus returns

1444. and heals and restores us

  1445. to perfect health

  1446. once and for all.

  1447. This is final

  1448. and for all eternity.

  1449. Pain, suffering, and death,

1450. and all the cursed things

  1451. of the earth

  1452. will be no more.

  1453. Verse 3 says,

1454. no longer will there be anything accursed.

1455. In the Garden of Eden in Genesis,

  1456. all of humanity

1457. and the earth was cursed

1458. for our sin and disobedience to God.

1459. And the curse of sin

  1460. was death.

1461. We were destined to die

  1462. because of our rebellion

1463. against the holy and good God.

  1464. And yet God,

1465. in His infinite mercy and love,

  1466. sent His Son, Jesus,

  1467. to be the atonement,

  1468. the slain lamb

  1469. to cover our sins.

1470. As Galatians chapter 3 says,

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  1471. Christ redeemed us

1472. from the curse of the law

1473. by becoming a curse for us.

  1474. For it's written,

  1475. cursed is everyone

1476. who is hanged on a tree.

1477. By hanging on that cross,

  1478. Christ removed

1479. the curse of sin and death

1480. from all who believe in Him

1481. as the ultimate act of grace.

  1482. We no longer have

1483. the curse of sin and death

  1484. bearing on our shoulders

1485. because Jesus took that burden

  1486. for Himself.

1487. And once Jesus returns again,

  1488. comes again,

1489. and the kingdom of God

1490. is established here on earth,

  1491. there will be nothing

  1492. that is cursed

  1493. in the new heavens

  1494. and the new earth.

  1495. All evildoers,

  1496. all idolaters,

  1497. all satanic forces

  1498. that curse the earth

  1499. and rebel against God

  1500. will be thrown into

  1501. the lake of fire

  1502. to suffer their own

  1503. eternal curse.

1504. But those who put their faith

  1505. in God

1506. and the Lamb that is Jesus

1507. will dwell with the Lord

  1508. free of all curse

  1509. and instead rich

  1510. with blessings

  1511. that have been granted

  1512. by the righteousness

  1513. of Christ.

1514. Where this curse of sin and death

  1515. had once ruled over,

  1516. the throne of God

  1517. and of the Lamb

  1518. has conquered

  1519. and laid dominion

  1520. there.

1521. And out of that throne

  1522. flows the river

  1523. of living water.

1524. And all who have believed,

  1525. all who have believed

  1526. in the gospel,

  1527. all who have believed

1528. in God and the Lamb,

  1529. His servants

  1530. will draw near

  1531. to the source

  1532. of living water

  1533. and they will worship

  1534. our God

  1535. seated on His throne.

  1536. And finally,

1537. all who have been faithful

  1538. to the testimony

  1539. of Jesus

  1540. will see

  1541. God's face.

  1542. We will be able

  1543. to see God's face.

  1544. All throughout history,

  1545. humans could not

  1546. and cannot

  1547. see God's face.

  1548. Moses was unable

  1549. to see God

  1550. on Mount Sinai

  1551. in Exodus 33.

  1552. Israel could not

  1553. enter into the tabernacle

  1554. of God's presence

  1555. without immediately

  1556. dying from God's holiness.

  1557. John chapter 1,

    John 1:18

  1558. verse 18 says,

  1559. no one has ever

  1560. seen God.

  1561. Not one has ever

  1562. seen God.

  1563. The only God

1564. who is at the Father's side,

1565. He has made Him known.

1566. To be able to see

  1567. someone's face

  1568. means that you are

  1569. in right relationship

  1570. with them.

  1571. When something is wrong

  1572. in a relationship,

  1573. whether it's a fight

  1574. or an argument

  1575. or strife,

  1576. there are times

  1577. when people won't be

  1578. in each other's faces,

  1579. where people won't

  1580. see each other's faces,

  1581. or they won't be

  1582. present with one another

  1583. because something

  1584. is not right

  1585. in the relationship.

  1586. Similarly,

  1587. we are unable

  1588. to see God's face

  1589. right now,

1590. in the here and now,

  1591. because our relationship

  1592. with God

  1593. is not perfected yet.

  1594. There is still sin

1595. and evil in the world

  1596. that keeps God's presence

  1597. behind the misty veil.

1598. But that's the greatest hope

  1599. of believers

  1600. and followers of Jesus.

  1601. To be in right,

  1602. perfect relationship

  1603. with God

  1604. and to be able

  1605. to see God's face

  1606. as a sure sign

  1607. of his perfect presence

  1608. directly with us.

  1609. 1 John 3, verse 2 says,

    1 John 3:2

  1610. Beloved,

1611. we are God's children now.

1612. We are God's children now,

1613. and what we will be

  1614. has not yet appeared.

  1615. But we know

  1616. that when he appears

1617. and we shall be like him,

1618. because we shall see him

  1619. as he is.

1620. When the Lord Jesus returns,

1621. like a bride at the wedding,

  1622. the misty veil

  1623. over our eyes

  1624. will be lifted,

  1625. and we'll be able

  1626. to see Jesus

  1627. and the Lord God

  1628. face to face.

  1629. And this will be

  1630. the sure sign

1631. that we are in perfected,

  1632. right relationship

  1633. with our God.

1634. And we will be able

  1635. to dwell

  1636. in his full presence

  1637. forever

  1638. as his people,

  1639. as his children.

1640. This is the amazing hope

1641. that we look forward to

  1642. in our future.

  1643. If we faithfully

  1644. hold on to

  1645. the testimony of Jesus

1646. in the here and now,

  1647. we will belong

  1648. to our Lord God.

  1649. Just as Jesus promised

  1650. in Revelation 2,

1651. I will write on him

1652. the name of my God

  1653. and the name

1654. of the city of my God,

  1655. the new Jerusalem,

  1656. which comes down

  1657. from my God

  1658. out of heaven

1659. and my own new name.

1660. We're going to be marked

  1661. on our foreheads

  1662. with the new name

  1663. of God

  1664. and of Jesus.

  1665. That's a sure sign

  1666. that we belong

  1667. to no one else.

  1668. No one can claim

  1669. that we are theirs

  1670. except for Jesus

1671. and the Lord God Almighty.

  1672. And we will reign

  1673. with him

  1674. in the new Jerusalem,

  1675. the new creation

  1676. forever and ever.

  1677. Brothers and sisters,

  1678. as we live

  1679. as God's people

  1680. and as followers

  1681. of Jesus Christ,

  1682. let's examine

  1683. exactly where

  1684. the source

  1685. of our life's water

  1686. is coming from.

  1687. Let's see to it

  1688. that we're not drinking

  1689. from the water

  1690. of this world,

1691. which will only leave us

  1692. thirstier and thirstier

  1693. than ever before.

  1694. But rather,

  1695. we're reliant

  1696. on the river

  1697. of living water,

  1698. the Holy Spirit

  1699. that flows

1700. from the Lord God Almighty

  1701. and the Lamb

  1702. that is Jesus Christ.

  1703. Those who faithfully

  1704. draw near

  1705. to that living water,

  1706. those who faithfully

  1707. hold on

  1708. to the testimony

  1709. of Jesus,

  1710. on that final day

  1711. when he returns,

  1712. will be able

  1713. to enter into

  1714. the city

  1715. of New Jerusalem.

  1716. And we'll be able

  1717. to enjoy

  1718. the living water

  1719. and the fruits

1720. of the tree of life

  1721. and we'll be restored

  1722. in eternal fellowship

  1723. with the Lord God

  1724. face to face

  1725. in his presence.

  1726. Let's pray.

  1727. O Holy God,

  1728. we thank you

  1729. for the rivers

  1730. of living water.

  1731. We thank you

  1732. so much

  1733. for your spirit

1734. which is the living water

  1735. that we have today

  1736. which aids us

  1737. and guides us

  1738. as the helper

  1739. to aid us

  1740. in our walk

  1741. and faith

  1742. with you,

  1743. Lord.

  1744. Lord,

  1745. we thank you

  1746. that you give us

  1747. this grand vision

  1748. of the new cities

  1749. that is to come,

  1750. the new creation,

  1751. the new heavens

  1752. and earth

  1753. where we'll be able

  1754. to dwell with you

  1755. for all eternity

  1756. in your light

  1757. day and night,

  1758. night and day.

  1759. Lord,

  1760. we thank you

  1761. that we have

  1762. this access,

  1763. this unfiltered access

  1764. to be able

  1765. to worship you

  1766. in spirit

  1767. and in truth.

  1768. Fill our hearts

  1769. with that wonder,

  1770. fill our hearts

  1771. with that hope

  1772. of the coming kingdom

  1773. of our Lord

  1774. and God

  1775. and help us

1776. in the here and now

  1777. in our present moment

  1778. to look for

  1779. that source

  1780. of our living water

  1781. and see to it

  1782. that it comes

  1783. solely from you,

  1784. Lord.

  1785. We thank you, God.

  1786. we love you

1787. and we pray all this

  1788. in Jesus' name.

  1789. Amen.
