  1. I have my friend Malachi help me out

  2. here this morning.

  3. >> All scripture is God breathed and is

  4. useful for teaching, rebuking,

  5. correcting, and training in

  6. righteousness so that the servants of

  7. God may be thoroughly equipped for every

  8. good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17.

    2 Timothy 3:16–17

  9. My dear brothers and sisters, take note

  10. of this. Everyone should be quick to

  11. listen, slow to speak, and slow to

  12. become angry. James 1:19. This is the

    James 1:19

  13. word of the Lord.

  14. >> Thanks be to God. All right. Thanks,

  15. Malachi.

  16. >> Thanks, buddy. I appreciate you.

  17. >> All right. So, if I have not had the

  18. chance to meet you yet, uh my name is

  19. Ralph Garcia. I get the amazing

  20. privilege of uh serving as a pastor here

  21. at Radiant Church Exit. And I'm so glad

  22. that you guys joined us. with summer

  23. breaks and stuff, you know, it can get a

  24. little thin, but uh it is so good to see

  25. all of your faces and just carving out

  26. time uh to come with one collective

  27. voice and worship God. And today, we're

  28. going to lean into his word and we're

  29. going to ask God, what would you want us

  30. to learn from you today? And uh we are

  31. just kicking off a summer series. So, if

  32. it's your first time, you're you're

  33. joining at the right time. We're just

  34. kicking off uh what we're calling a

  35. summer of power. and we're going to

  36. examine the word of God and we're look

  37. at all the ways that we are empowered as

  38. Christ followers through Jesus through

  39. the Holy Spirit and what that means for

  40. us and more than that what that looks

  41. like in our daily lives as we walk and

  42. we follow him. And as I was kind of

  43. going through this series and thinking

  44. about the different things we're going

  45. to look at, I was reminded of some of

  46. our favorite movies. I was reminded of

  47. Peter Parker and Spider-Man, right? Like

  48. the whole thing is not so much that he

  49. has these superpowers, but for the first

  50. part of his life, he's like largely

  51. unaware that he has them, right? And

  52. it's not till later in his life, life

  53. circumstances come and he's he's forced

  54. in this step into his calling, right? If

  55. you have little ones, uh maybe you're

  56. familiar with the movie The Incredibles.

  57. I watched it about a hundred times. Do

  58. you know the movie? It's a It's a movie

  59. about this family of undercover

  60. superheroes and they have these powers,

  61. but uh they're really unaware of like

  62. how they're going to look and operate in

  63. the world and the world is kind of like,

  64. hey, uh that just shelf that like that's

  65. too much. They kind of get blacklisted

  66. almost like um their their uh the world

  67. is like, hey, that actually looks bad

  68. and actually is for their good. And so

  69. as I was kind of reflecting on this, I'm

  70. like, man, how many of us as Christians,

  71. as followers of Jesus, walk around kind

  72. of largely unaware of the power that we

  73. actually have in and through him.

  74. And not only that, or and or we're we're

  75. just kind of um not sure how how they

  76. fit in or where to apply them. Uh and so

  77. that's what we want to talk about this

  78. morning. As we talk about the different

  79. powers, we want to talk about the power

  80. of discernment

  81. because discernment is the key to

  82. stepping into all of these things. We

  83. have to be able to discern and trust God

  84. and hear him as he's calling us into

  85. these different ways that we're called

  86. to operate. And so last week we kicked

  87. it off with the power of blessing.

  88. And we talked about how um we don't work

  89. for blessing, we work from a place of

  90. blessing. And we looked at how this

  91. happens. And it happens on the very

  92. first page of your Bible in Genesis

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  93. chapter 1. It says that God created male

  94. and female. He created them both. He

  95. breathed life into them. And before they

  96. could do anything but breathe, God says

  97. that he blessed them.

  98. Before they can uh before they can

  99. disobey him, before they could obey him,

  100. he blessed them. And then we looked at

  101. Jesus. the first 30 years of his life

  102. largely just a normal life from what we

  103. can gather from the scriptures. No

  104. miracles yet. And at 30, he comes and

  105. stands in the Jordan River under an open

  106. heaven. He's baptized. The spirit

  107. descends on him, empowering him. And God

  108. says, "This is my son whom I loved and

  109. with whom I'm well pleased." Again, no

  110. miracles.

  111. And still God says, "I'm pleased with

  112. you." And we walked away with knowing

  113. that who God says we are is the most

  114. important thing that we can come to

  115. learn. And so as we segue into this

  116. power of discernment, I also want to

  117. start off with with another uh passage.

  118. 2 Timothy 1 verse 7.

    2 Timothy 1:7

  119. It says, "For God has not given us a

  120. spirit of fear, but of power and of love

  121. and of a sound mind.

  122. This power is required because we are

  123. called to a supernatural calling. We are

  124. called, think about this, to to call

  125. people from darkness, spiritual darkness

  126. to light. We are called to come against

  127. strongholds.

  128. We are called to to proclaim and declare

  129. what's good about God.

  130. That takes a supernatural equipping. We

  131. cannot do that on our own accord. We

  132. cannot pull this off by our own

  133. willpower. We must we must depend on God

  134. to equip us for this work.

  135. And so as we start to look at um the

  136. power of discernment,

  137. we're going to look at how critical this

  138. because we want to bless people, right?

  139. We want to provide godly counsel. We

  140. want to come against strongholds. We

  141. want to declare reconciliation between

  142. man and God. We want all of these

  143. things. We want to be able to counsel

  144. one another, but we're not going to be

  145. able to do this if we're not hearing

  146. from God. And with all the noise that's

  147. going on in the world, how do we

  148. separate? How do we distinguish

  149. God's will, God's voice, from all the

  150. other voices that are competing for our

  151. attention? That is going to require

  152. discernment.

  153. And so, we're going to dive into that

  154. today. And I think it's going to be good

  155. news. I think you're going to be

  156. encouraged about this. And so, what does

  157. discernment actually mean? I think, you

  158. know, maybe it's not a word that we use

  159. too often uh in our day-to-day. I think

  160. like uh in most of our uh usage of the

  161. word kind of um in the world, I think um

  162. discernment is the ability to recognize

  163. what's really happening and what's

  164. actually true. And wisdom tells us what

  165. to do about it. I think sometimes

  166. discernment and wisdom get kind of

  167. coupled together and they're kind of

  168. like cousins. They kind of look like

  169. each other, but they're different,

  170. right? They each stand on their own. Uh,

  171. but I think when it comes to spiritual

  172. discernment, uh, is a little bit

  173. different. But, um, discernment in our

  174. day-to-day, it is super important.

  175. Discernment helps us to choose friends,

  176. right? Uh, it helps us to choose a

  177. career. Discernment helps you to choose

  178. who to hang out with. Should I go to

  179. that party? Should I go to this college?

  180. These are all ways that we that

  181. discernment shows up in our lives. But

  182. spiritual discernment actually is just a

  183. little bit different.

  184. And spiritual discernment, I want you to

  185. think of it as like the base or the the

  186. stream in which all other forms of

  187. discernment flow. And so for spiritual

  188. discernment, I would define it this way.

  189. I would say that spiritual discernment

  190. is the God-given ability to recognize

  191. God's voice and to separate it from all

  192. the other noise competing for our

  193. attention.

  194. And again, this is critical because

  195. without listening,

  196. it's impossible for us to discern. James

    James 1:19

  197. 1:19 says it this way is what Malachi

  198. read to us. My dear brothers and

  199. sisters,

  200. take note of this. Everyone, turn to

  201. your neighbor and say, everyone.

  202. Everyone. Not just some people, right?

  203. Not just the slow ones. Not just the

  204. special ones. It says, "Everyone

  205. should be quick to listen, slow to

  206. speak, and slow to become angry."

  207. Notice this verse says, "Take note."

  208. Like, write this down because I don't

  209. think it's something that comes

  210. naturally. I know it doesn't for me. The

  211. temptation is to speak first. The

  212. temptation is to get my point across

  213. first. Like, I got important things to

  214. say. I have the right idea. You should

  215. hear it. And you should hear it right

  216. now. And so the temptation for us is to

  217. speak first before we listen. But how

  218. many of us know that the faster we talk

  219. and the less we listen, the more our

  220. emotions start to come out, right? And

  221. then we start speaking from this place

  222. of emotion, whether it's fear, whether

  223. it's worry, whether it's doubt, it's

  224. insecurity. And man, in that the Bible

  225. says when we're speaking fast and not

  226. listening, it actually lead to anger.

  227. And when we're angry and we're caught up

  228. in our emotions and we're and we're

  229. attached to our emotions, our ability to

  230. discern is next to impossible.

  231. It's next to impossible.

  232. What James is saying is go in reverse

  233. order. Don't get angry. Don't talk fast.

  234. Listen first.

  235. Man, that is a hard thing. I think

  236. that's why it's it's a superpower. And

  237. you know these people, if you think

  238. about it in your life, they stand out.

  239. You have some friends, maybe some

  240. family, some people that you come in

  241. interaction with and they're really good

  242. listeners,

  243. right? They listen. You love spending

  244. time with these people because they

  245. listen so well and you walk away,

  246. sometimes they don't even say anything

  247. and you walk away like, "Man, that was

  248. good. So glad I got together with that

  249. person. Man, I feel so much better." And

  250. they actually didn't say much. They

  251. listened. Guys, listening first is a

  252. superpower.

  253. Listening first, speaking last is so

  254. critical.

  255. And this is important. We want to hear,

  256. we want to learn, we want to understand

  257. what God is saying.

  258. And we want to know, is is this God or

  259. is this the pizza I ate last night?

  260. Right? Like what what's going on? We

  261. want to be able to discern these things.

  262. They're important. And just a quick

  263. note, you'll hear me use this phrase,

  264. God's voice or God speaking throughout

  265. the message. I just want to clarify one

  266. thing. I'm not talking about an audible

  267. voice that you can hear like the example

  268. we looked at when when the sky opened

  269. and Jesus spoke uh God spoke to Jesus

  270. and he could hear it. Everyone else can

  271. hear it. And and I've heard accounts

  272. that people have experienced it. I'm not

  273. discounting that. What I'm saying is

  274. that the most evidence we have supports

  275. that God does still speak to us today.

  276. And I want to talk about three different

  277. ways that God does that. And not the

  278. only three ways, but primarily the three

  279. different ways that God speak to us

  280. because I think it'll be helpful as we

  281. shape the rest of our talk this morning.

  282. And so we kind of distilled it down to

  283. three different areas or three different

  284. filters that we can look at when we're

  285. trying to discern is what I'm hearing,

  286. what I'm perceiving through my prayer

  287. life, through uh counsel with others,

  288. through the word of God. Am I hearing

  289. God on this? And so I think the first

  290. and foremost thing that we need to ask

  291. ourselves is, does what I'm hearing

  292. agree with scripture?

  293. This is the primary way that God speaks

  294. to us through his written word. We have

  295. the Bible and we know that the Bible

  296. even about itself says it's alive and

  297. it's active. Things that are alive and

  298. they're active, they speak. They

  299. communicate. They're living. Dead things

  300. don't speak. Things that are alive, they

  301. speak and they communicate. And so we

  302. know that the Bible is the first and

  303. foremost and primary way that we can go

  304. to God and say, "God, what do you have

  305. to say about this?" And he does speak to

  306. us through his written word. I can

  307. testify to that. So many times in my

  308. life, I've gone to the word for whatever

  309. reason or season that I'm in. And God

  310. speaks directly to my heart. And I know

  311. if I opened up the mic that many of you

  312. would have the same testimony, but the

  313. thing is that we actually have to read

  314. it. You have to read it. Sermons are

  315. great. Small groups are great. But guys,

  316. if I can encourage you with anything

  317. this morning is to read your Bible. It

  318. is the word of God. It's his spoken word

  319. to us. And I would encourage you to

  320. create a h a healthy rhythm of reading

  321. the Bible so that you can um have have

  322. these uh moments where you can discern

  323. by using the go the word of God to help

  324. you through that. And so couple quick

  325. thing discernment sifts through

  326. everything we hear through the Bible. Uh

  327. when when we're hearing from God and

  328. perceiving things, he's never going to

  329. give us a new commandment outside of

  330. what's written in the word of God. He's

  331. not going to give us a new thing to do.

  332. there's not going to be a new way to get

  333. to salvation. And we're going to talk

  334. about some of those warnings and how

  335. they pop up in our culture. But, uh, I

  336. think we can't say that enough is that

  337. the the the that God's not going to

  338. contradict himself with what he's

  339. already written. And so, first and

  340. foremost, we hold the word of God as our

  341. first primary source of hearing from him

  342. and discerning. Number two, we can ask

  343. ourselves, what I'm hearing, what I'm

  344. sensing, does it reflect the character

  345. of the Holy Spirit? Right? Discernment

  346. tunes our hearts from the inside.

  347. Remember Jesus told us in the book of

  348. John, we'll take a look a little bit

  349. more here in a minute. But but Jesus

  350. tell us the Holy Spirit is going to come

  351. in my place. It's better that I go. And

  352. they're like, "What do you mean it's

  353. better that you go?" How does that make

  354. any sense? And Jesus like, well, while

  355. I'm here, I can be with one person at

  356. one time. But when the Holy Spirit

  357. comes,

  358. he's going to be able to be with all of

  359. you at the same time. And Jesus drills

  360. down a little bit deeper in here. He

  361. says, "He will remind you of every word

  362. that I have spoken."

  363. Man, if the Holy Spirit is reminding us

  364. of something, that means we're going to

  365. hear it in one way or the other. Right?

  366. When my wife reminds me of something, I

  367. can hear her reminding us. When my phone

  368. reminds me of something, there's an

  369. audible thing that happens, right? It is

  370. communicating with me. So, when we're

  371. going to be reminded by the Holy Spirit,

  372. this means there's going to be some form

  373. of communication with the Holy Spirit.

  374. The Holy Spirit is a reliable source to

  375. confirm the word of God. And the Holy

  376. Spirit helps us to discern. And we

  377. actually can't do any discerning without

  378. him.

  379. Number three is what we're hearing or

  380. what we're sensing, can it be confirmed

  381. through godly community? And what I mean

  382. by that is the sermon often it clarifies

  383. our choices through godly counsel. The

  384. Bible tells us that we should counsel

  385. one another that that through many

  386. advisors victory is sure, right? that

  387. there's a place in community where we

  388. come and we say, "Hey, brother man, I

  389. have this decision to make or I feel

  390. this tensing on my life and I've been

  391. praying about it, but would you join me?

  392. Would you pray with me in this?" And

  393. then and then would you share with me

  394. any impressions you get from God? Like

  395. like the the community of believers,

  396. there's power in that as well. And so

  397. many times through godly counsel,

  398. through community, through a small

  399. group, through a discipling

  400. relationship, God will confirm

  401. sometimes, a lot of times what he you're

  402. already sensing from him. And sometimes

  403. you're like, "Ah, I don't know. I don't

  404. know if I should go and do that thing.

  405. That sounds hard. It's going to take a

  406. lot of faith." And then your brother

  407. calls you. He's like, "Hey, I've been

  408. praying for you and I feel like, yeah,

  409. you know, I I just had this picture of

  410. you out serving at at an orphanage or

  411. whatever it is, right?" And you're like,

  412. "That's funny. I was thinking about

  413. serving at an orphanage." Those things

  414. will happen when we're living in

  415. community and we're trusting one another

  416. and we're doing life with one another.

  417. And so the word of God helps us discern.

  418. The Holy Spirit helps us discern. And

  419. godly community helps us to discern.

  420. And I'm so grateful. I want I want to

  421. just lift up one of the the greatest

  422. people I know that has this gift of

  423. discernment. My wife Lucy. She is one of

  424. the best discerners that I know. I go to

  425. her so many times when I need godly

  426. counsel, when I'm like, man, I'm really

  427. struggling with this decision and I can

  428. trust that she's going to tell me the

  429. truth. Sometimes a little a little too

  430. much truth. But um but I know she'll

  431. give it to me straight. But but I I have

  432. watched her in her life take and discern

  433. things by holding it up to the filter of

  434. the word of God by going to God in

  435. prayer, by not being quick to speak

  436. about something

  437. and then coming to me and saying, "Man,

  438. I know this is God because this is not

  439. actually kind of what I wanted to

  440. happen." But she has the faith to speak

  441. it out anyways, even in the hard times,

  442. into the hard things.

  443. And I don't think I do too bad at

  444. discernment. It showed up early in my

  445. life. I started off as a Giants fan when

  446. I was a kid. And then God helped me

  447. discern that the Dodgers were actually

  448. the better team. And so I'm working on

  449. it. It does show up in my life, and

  450. there is some fruit there. So keep

  451. praying for me. All right. I got the

  452. mic. All right. So,

  453. um, but man, on on a serious note

  454. though, I was thinking about this and I

  455. was talking to my wife about this about

  456. discernment and I thought, I don't know

  457. if there was another moment in history

  458. where discernment could be more critical

  459. than right now.

  460. I think about that for a moment. Beyond

  461. the internet, remember when it was the

  462. internet? Like, oh my gosh, it's the

  463. internet, right? And then it was like,

  464. "Oh, Google, enter AI."

  465. Okay, let me tell you something right

  466. now, church. If we do not have

  467. discernment,

  468. you will be deceived.

  469. Guaranteed.

  470. Discernment. The power of discernment.

  471. Asking God, fill us with this power of

  472. discernment. Could not be more timely.

  473. could not be more timely. Not just in

  474. our personal lives, but more so in the

  475. spiritual. Think about it. You can get

  476. on your phone right now, hop on YouTube,

  477. and someone can have a a following of a

  478. million subscribers,

  479. a platform

  480. not tested by any sort of uh character

  481. test, life experience, spiritual

  482. covering, pastoral oversight, nothing.

  483. You know what's required? A ring light,

  484. a Wi-Fi connection, and a smartphone.

  485. That's it. You can have a whole

  486. ministry. Unknown. This person is

  487. unknown. And they get their reels and

  488. they go viral and they and we share

  489. them.

  490. Man, if we're not discerning

  491. what's being put out there, we will be

  492. deceived. And Jesus warned about this.

  493. The Bible has many warnings actually

  494. about this, about testing the spirits,

  495. about discerning. The Bible speaks of a

  496. people called the Bereans in the book of

  497. Acts. And it says the Bereans were of

  498. more noble character because every day

  499. with eagerness they went to receive the

  500. word of God and then they went to the

  501. word to see what Paul said was true.

  502. Man, if they fact checked Paul, you

  503. better fact check me. You better fact

  504. check me. You better fact check the the

  505. the the Instagram reel that gave you the

  506. goosebumps and you shared with your

  507. small group before you went and actually

  508. discerned if that's the word of God.

  509. Because the Bible says that we will be

  510. deceived not by wolves with fangs, but

  511. in sheep's clothing. That'll actually

  512. sound true. That'll actually look good.

  513. It'll sound right.

  514. Our enemy

  515. number one tactic is to deceive.

  516. Think about it. What was the first

  517. deception? Did God really say?

  518. Did God really say? Did that is that

  519. really what you heard?

  520. He runs the same play, guys. The enemy

  521. doesn't have to come up with a new

  522. thing. But now, now enter the world of

  523. AI and instant platforms

  524. and influencers.

  525. Man, the gate is wide open for

  526. deception. And I don't say this to

  527. create paranoia. It's not what I'm

  528. saying. I'm not saying be suspicious of

  529. every single person. We have to have a

  530. healthy degree of of awareness is what

  531. I'm saying. We just can't take the bite

  532. from every apple. We're hungry for the

  533. word of God. I'm hungry for the deeper

  534. things, too. But what happens is when

  535. you're too hungry, you eat anything put

  536. before you. Right? It's kind of like

  537. what Esau happened to Esau. He was so

  538. hungry. He was so starved. He sold his

  539. birthright for a bowl of soup. Yeah. We

  540. want to hunger and pan for the word of

  541. God, but we don't want to put whatever

  542. eat whatever's put before our our table.

  543. We want to slow down. We want to be

  544. quick to listen, slow to speak. Right?

  545. This is so timely, guys. This is so

  546. powerful. Listening

  547. is an art and it must be practiced.

  548. So, uh I shared with you that I recently

  549. retired from uh the the career field of

  550. law enforcement. And when I first became

  551. a police officer, um I had the

  552. opportunity to join our crisis

  553. negotiation team. And part of that was

  554. the training they send you to the FBI

  555. school for hostage negotiations. And I

  556. was like, "Oh man, this is going to be

  557. cool. They're going to teach me how to

  558. get out of any situation with my words.

  559. They're going to teach me the art of

  560. persuasion. I'm going to be able to get

  561. my kids to clean their rooms, no

  562. problem. Like, this is good. I went got

  563. there early, sat in the front row,

  564. notebook open. I'm like, teach me. I'm

  565. ready to learn the secrets.

  566. And the guy get steps up there, and he

  567. goes, "I bet most of you guys thought

  568. you were coming here because you were

  569. going to learn the art of speaking and

  570. how to persuade people. You're wrong.

  571. what I'm going to teach you to do is how

  572. to listen because listening saves lives.

  573. I was like, whoa. And right away, I

  574. start making these spiritual connections

  575. right away. It's not about what you say

  576. that's going to save someone in a

  577. crisis. It's letting them say the thing

  578. that got them in the crisis. And that's

  579. what happens in spiritual communities.

  580. And that's why small groups and

  581. communion with one another is so

  582. important.

  583. The art of listening is so powerful and

  584. it originates in scripture is what I

  585. love about it. And so we want to train

  586. our ears to hear before we speak.

  587. And so as as we uh spend the rest of our

  588. time together, I want to just kind of

  589. it's such a broad field and and again

  590. this series will continue, but I think I

  591. just want to hit on two things as as a

  592. practical note on where discernment

  593. where we can deploy discernment right

  594. now and how it and how it shows up right

  595. now in the time that we find oursel in

  596. the church because there's two things

  597. that the enemy wants to weaponize,

  598. Right? We said the first one, the word

  599. of God. He wants to try and distort that

  600. word. And the other thing is he wants to

  601. come against the power of God. And so he

  602. wants you to get to doubt that God still

  603. moves through the supernatural.

  604. Because if he can get you to think that

  605. he doesn't anymore, then we are robbed

  606. from those experiences. It says the

  607. Bible says that these things are

  608. actually to edify the church. the gifts,

  609. the fruit of the spirit. The gifts of

  610. the spirit are used to edify and build

  611. up the church, not us, not to give us a

  612. platform, but to make much of Jesus. And

  613. so, the enemy knows that. And so, it

  614. wants to hijack those things through

  615. counterfeit experiences and counterfeit

  616. teachers.

  617. And this way, when they're found out,

  618. you go, "Aha, see, I knew it. I knew it.

  619. The gifts are dead. God doesn't speak.

  620. That guy was a phony."

  621. Well guys, this has been happening from

  622. the beginning. Again, first John tells

  623. us to test the spirits. Don't simply

  624. believe everything you hear because it

  625. sounds spiritual.

  626. Spiritual discernment helps us to guard

  627. against that. Acts chapter 8, you can

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  628. write this down if you're taking notes.

  629. Acts chapter 8 tells a story about Simon

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  630. the sorcerer. And this is a very

  631. interesting story because it says that

  632. Simon is amazing the people of uh

  633. Samaria where he's living with the power

  634. of sorcery and all the details aren't uh

  635. laid out in that chapter I think. But

  636. what's important to conclude is that the

  637. Bible says that people called him the

  638. great power of God. That was his

  639. nickname. You ever met a guy with a

  640. nickname the great power of God? I never

  641. have. But what would someone have to do

  642. to get that name? Some pretty fancy

  643. things, right? And so that's where Simon

  644. is when the disciples descend upon

  645. Samaria. And the disciples come with a

  646. different tactic. They actually display

  647. the power of God. And so by displaying

  648. the power of God rooted in the Holy

  649. Spirit, it says that faith starts to

  650. break out throughout Samaria. And Simon

  651. takes notice. He's like, "What's

  652. happening here? I thought I was ruling

  653. the roost here. Who are you guys? And

  654. they show up and people start believing

  655. in God. They're getting baptized. People

  656. are getting converted so much that Simon

  657. starts pressing in. And and the Bible

  658. says that actually for a time he

  659. believed and he was baptized. But then

  660. here's what happens. The enemy hijacked

  661. his old life. He starts seeing that the

  662. disciples are laying on the hands and

  663. they're and they're giving the Holy

  664. Spirit and they're doing all these

  665. things. And then Simon approaches them

  666. on the side and says, "Hey, um, how much

  667. do I have to pay you to get that?"

  668. He wants to buy the supernatural power

  669. of God that he's seeing because he sees

  670. the influence that they're having. And

  671. Simon falls right back into his old

  672. ways. It's kind of like the the hearts

  673. uh the the soil of the hearts that we

  674. looked at last summer.

  675. It it felt it got choked out. His faith

  676. got choked out early because he saw the

  677. influence that the other guys were

  678. having and he wanted that. He wanted to

  679. counterfeit

  680. the experiences and the supernatural

  681. work of God. And [snorts] so what do the

  682. disciples do? They engage discernment

  683. right away. They're able to discern his

  684. heart. They look at him and they go,

  685. "Your heart is not good, Simon.

  686. Your heart is hard toward God." And you

  687. know what they do? They boot him out of

  688. community. They're just like, "You got

  689. to go." Why? They're safeguarding the

  690. flock against something super important,

  691. God's supernatural power and the way

  692. that he works. They're saying, "You want

  693. to counterfeit that?" And we won't allow

  694. that as long as we're holding the gate.

  695. You got to go. You got to go. And you

  696. say, "That might sound harsh." But you

  697. know what's harsher is the enemy

  698. invading the flock

  699. and counterfeiting miracles and hurting

  700. people's fate. That's more devastating

  701. than telling the guy, "You got to go."

  702. And so we see discernment right away

  703. work through the disciples here. They're

  704. able to discern Simon's motives. And

  705. that's what discernment does. It

  706. actually it separates truth from lies.

  707. And and it brings to light hidden

  708. motives. It brings to light

  709. manipulation. And you're able to see

  710. clearly. And again, this is why it takes

  711. the power of God to do these things.

  712. And so the other way it shows up is

  713. through protecting the flock against

  714. false teachers, false prophets. Jesus

  715. actually tells us there's going to be

  716. false prophets out there. You need to be

  717. on guard. You need to be looking out.

  718. And if you think, "Oh, that just sounds

  719. like a thing that happened back in the

  720. day." It's not. It's happening today. I

  721. don't know if you've been following any

  722. current events at all within different

  723. faith communities, but you've seen that

  724. there have been a number of people with

  725. some pretty sizable followings that have

  726. moved in the prophetic that had been

  727. found out to actually be counterfeiting

  728. these things. And these are from

  729. reputable schools and reputable

  730. ministries that have been really

  731. pressing into the prophetic. And man,

  732. this is hurtful.

  733. This is so hurtful.

  734. Again, this is the enemy saying, "See,

  735. wasn't real. These guys are fake

  736. and they were fakes."

  737. But we know that there's going to be

  738. wolves disguised in sheep's clothing.

  739. And maybe they didn't start out that

  740. way. Maybe they maybe they were

  741. operating under the power of God. Maybe

  742. they were filled. And maybe like Simon,

  743. they started to see that man, actually,

  744. I can glorify myself in this. We don't

  745. know. We don't know all that, but we do

  746. know that they're starting to be

  747. exposed,

  748. and that's a good thing. And one of

  749. these actually hit pretty close to home

  750. for us. Um, I don't know, about 10 years

  751. ago, uh, when we're still living in

  752. Southern California. Some friends of

  753. ours, uh, were really excited about this

  754. conference that they found on Facebook.

  755. And they said, "Hey, this guy, he's a

  756. really reputable guy. He's a real

  757. powerful teacher, and he moves in the

  758. prophetic, and we want to go. We're

  759. going to attend one of his uh, events."

  760. And so, they went and we asked him,

  761. "Hey, how'd it go?" And they said, "Man,

  762. pretty awesome. Actually, we we actually

  763. got called out from everyone in the

  764. crowd. They kind of singled us out." I

  765. said, ' Really? What happened? He said,

  766. 'Well, the guy said, 'Hey, does the does

  767. the name Bubba mean anything to anyone?

  768. And that was kind of funny name. Well,

  769. their dog is named Bubba. And so he's

  770. like, I have a dog named Bubba. He goes,

  771. well, come up here. Who are you here

  772. with? My wife brings him up to the

  773. stage, starts prophesying over them,

  774. telling that they're going to uh have

  775. children. Well, unbeknownst to this guy,

  776. they've been struggling with infertility

  777. for a really long time. And so, they

  778. hear this word and they receive it and

  779. they're like, "God is speaking over this

  780. and they're so excited, so overjoyed by

  781. it. Um, they start investing in in uh in

  782. IVF."

  783. She takes a year off work. They spent

  784. about $100,000

  785. on IVF treatments. And this is about 10

  786. years ago. They're still not pregnant to

  787. this day. But when the story came out,

  788. the first one that I saw actually named

  789. that guy by name that had prophesied

  790. over them that day. And when they were

  791. telling us a story, Lucy and I were

  792. driving home and I said, "Babe, I want

  793. to be excited for them, but something

  794. doesn't sit right with me about this

  795. guy.

  796. It's just something in my spirit is is

  797. is not sitting right." And and I asked

  798. my friend Justin. I said, "Hey, how

  799. how'd you hear about this conference?"

  800. He said, "Oh, on Facebook." And I'm

  801. driving home, I remember his Facebook

  802. profile, uh, because he was a police

  803. officer, didn't want to use his real

  804. name, so he used Bubba St. Pierre. That

  805. was his name. And I thought, man, he

  806. heard about this on Facebook. His name

  807. is Bubba on Facebook. Oh no, the guy

  808. wouldn't do that. Sure enough, this man

  809. actually, the article that I read

  810. actually said he was using Facebook to

  811. learn things about people before they

  812. showed up, so he can use a word. The

  813. same guy to my friends

  814. hurt their faith, guys.

  815. Thank God by the grace and blood of

  816. Jesus, they are faithful disciples

  817. today. But man, they walked through it.

  818. They went back to the word. Guys, we

  819. must safeguard the flock against the

  820. counterfeit. We must. And the only way

  821. we can do that is through discernment,

  822. filtering through the word of God,

  823. asking the Holy Spirit, is this your

  824. character? And through godly community,

  825. saying, "Hey, I think I got this word.

  826. What do you think about it?" If we can

  827. do those things, we can walk in the

  828. power discern. We can safeguard the

  829. bride that is Christ Church. This is so

  830. important because it is real. God does

  831. speak. God does move. God does open

  832. wombs. He does. He heals the blind. He

  833. does all these things. But we don't get

  834. to command them like a magic trick. He's

  835. not a vending machine in the sky. We

  836. must submit ourselves and come low and

  837. say, "God, I believe you have this

  838. power. If it's within your will, would

  839. you do it? But I am putting my request

  840. before you. And I will ask and I will

  841. seek and I will knock.

  842. But at the end of the day, it's your

  843. will and not mine."

  844. And we hear these things sometimes they

  845. tickle our ears and they move something

  846. in us and that's great but we need to

  847. discern. One of the beautiful things I

  848. love about our gatherings is is

  849. oftentimes during worship someone will

  850. be feel prompted or feel moved to share

  851. a passage or a word of encouragement.

  852. And that's great. And powerful times

  853. have moved in this very room. But it's

  854. also why if you heard Kevin say, "Would

  855. you come up to Ralph? Would you come up

  856. to Matt, Noah, someone in the front to

  857. help you discern."

  858. We want to be able to hear first. Why?

  859. Because we want to safeguard the flock.

  860. Sometimes it's our own voice. That's

  861. going to happen. Sometimes it's our own

  862. thoughts. It's our own goodwill. We want

  863. good for others. But when we come up and

  864. we and we listen and hey, what what are

  865. you sensing? We want to match it against

  866. the word of God, against the character

  867. of the Holy Spirit and what we know

  868. what's true within the faith community.

  869. And and it's hard sometimes to be up

  870. there to say, "Hey, I think maybe you

  871. should pray about that a little bit

  872. more." Or maybe that's just for you.

  873. Maybe it's not for the entire flock. And

  874. I've been told that before when I've

  875. gone up to share something. Hey, I would

  876. pray about that a little more. You know,

  877. I think that's a good word. I think that

  878. may just be for you. I don't feel

  879. offended, guys. I feel safe by that.

  880. I feel honored by that. I know this is

  881. not a show, but that this is real. This

  882. is the word of God. This is his bride

  883. and it must be protected at all cost.

  884. And so we do that here. That spirit is

  885. here. That the word of God is our first

  886. and primary way that we filter that the

  887. the Holy Spirit, he teaches us what's

  888. real.

  889. All right, we're going to close out

  890. here. Matthew 7:15, Jesus says, "Watch

    Matthew 7:15

  891. out for false prophets. They come to you

  892. in sheep's clothing, but inwardly

  893. they're ferocious wolves. By their

  894. fruit, you will recognize them."

  895. The last thing I I want to say is that

  896. uh when we're discerning and we're

  897. looking out for these counterfeit

  898. things, we want to watch how they come

  899. in because it says if they the the real

  900. shepherd comes in through the front

  901. door, but but but the false prophets,

  902. they climb in through a different way.

  903. He starts to tell us what to look for.

  904. And so when we're when we're trying to

  905. discern these things, we want to see is

  906. this person is this teacher someone who

  907. has entered through a spiritual covering

  908. who's known by elders who's known by a

  909. faith community who submitted their

  910. lives to Jesus. These are all good way

  911. because again as you can turn on a

  912. hundred different podcasts on your way

  913. home, a hundred different YouTube

  914. sermons. These are things that we need

  915. to be asking and discerning. Is this

  916. person does they have a spiritual

  917. covering? Are they teaching something

  918. that they're saying is new today that

  919. that it didn't mean back then? These are

  920. all red flags. These are all things we

  921. should be discerning. God does not shift

  922. and change his mind. He's not a man that

  923. he would lie. He is true. He is

  924. faithful. And his word remains the same.

  925. And it's something that we can count on.

  926. But it all goes back to knowing the word

  927. of God. We must know the word of God

  928. because the same attack will come. Did

  929. God really say

  930. in our culture it shows up like did God

  931. really say that marriage is only between

  932. a man and a woman? Is that really what

  933. it says? Because that sounds a little

  934. divisive. That doesn't sound include.

  935. That sounds like hate speech. Does God

  936. have hate speech? And we start to go,

  937. "Oh man, I don't know. I don't know.

  938. Does God really say that he knits babies

  939. together in the mother's womb? That

  940. before they're formed, he knows them?

  941. And that life is inherently valuable no

  942. matter in what stage? Does God really

  943. say that?"

  944. Guys, if we don't know what the word of

  945. God actually says, we will shrink back.

  946. We will doubt. We will fear.

  947. And some of these things are hard

  948. truths.

  949. Does the Bible really say Jesus is the

  950. only way to God? Don't all religions

  951. eventually lead to God? These are the

  952. things that people say to get you to

  953. doubt. Did God really say no? He really

  954. said Jesus is the way, the truth, and

  955. the life, and no one gets to the father

  956. except through him. You know how I know

  957. that? Because I read it.

  958. Because I read it. And you should read

  959. it, too. Don't believe me for it. Some

  960. of these things are hard to say. I wish

  961. I could just give you the sugarcoated

  962. things, the really easy softball

  963. preaching.

  964. But I've been tasked to give the whole

  965. word. Minister, the entire word of God,

  966. not the parts that make me feel warm and

  967. fuzzy, but the entire truth. Because the

  968. entire truth of God is what sets you

  969. free. The entire truth of God is what

  970. breaks strongholds. The entire truth of

  971. God is what reconciles families and

  972. communities. We cannot cherrypick from

  973. the word of God. That's not how he wrote

  974. it. He wrote the whole word.

  975. And as long as I'm saying on the stage,

  976. I will deliver to you the whole word of

  977. God

  978. because that's what we've been charged

  979. to do. And that is where the power is,

  980. guys. We must know what the word of God

  981. says. So when the serpent slithers and

  982. crawls up next to you and says, "Did God

  983. really say that?" He can go, "Yeah, he

  984. really did." Because that's what Jesus

  985. did when he was tempted.

  986. 40 days and 40 nights he was in the

  987. desert and who did he meet? The serpent

  988. again. And what did he say to Jesus?

  989. Pretty much that did God really say? He

  990. he tempted him to doubt the word of God.

  991. And what did Jesus do to combat it? He

  992. quoted the word of God because he knew

  993. what the father said. We too must know

  994. what the father says. Worship team,

  995. prayer team, would you join me on stage?

  996. Church, as we close out this morning,

  997. the good news, the best news is that we

  998. do have a good shepherd.

  999. We have the good shepherd.

1000. And it says in John that the sheep will

  1001. know the shepherd's voice.

1002. that we know his voice and that they

1003. will not follow the voice of a stranger.

1004. And so this morning we just we want to

  1005. come together in agreement

1006. and say that the voice of God is a voice

1007. that will be amplified in our life that

1008. we know his voice. We won't follow the

  1009. voice of a stranger.

1010. Jesus says he is actually the gate that

  1011. he is the door.

1012. The hired hands, they come in over the

1013. fence. But Jesus is a good shepherd and

1014. he lays down his life for the sheep. And

1015. we've been called to do the same, to lay

1016. down our life for one another. Would we

1017. not be like Peter Parker and the

1018. Incredibles? Would we not sit on the

1019. power that we've been given? Would we

1020. not shrink back because we don't know

1021. how that looks like in society or what

1022. someone might say if we believe what God

  1023. actually says.

1024. Guys, we can't be undercover Christians.

1025. We have nothing to be ashamed of.

  1026. We have everything

1027. everything that we need. The Bible says

1028. we've been blessed with every spiritual

1029. need and equipping through Jesus Christ.

1030. And so today, church, I charge you to

1031. walk in the power of God that he has

1032. laid forth for us to walk in. That we

1033. can bless with our words and that we can

1034. discern his will and his goodness by

1035. relying on the Holy Spirit, the gift of

1036. the Holy Spirit. As we close out, I want

1037. to read this psalm over you. I think

1038. David captures this. We know David

1039. struggled with discernment, man. that he

1040. struggled with discernment. But at the

1041. end of the day, this is what he says.

  1042. Teach me, Lord,

1043. the way of your decrees that I may

1044. follow it to the end. Give me

  1045. understanding,

  1046. discernment,

1047. so that I may keep your law and obey it

1048. with all my heart. Direct me in the path

1049. of your commands, for there I find the

  1050. light.

1051. Turn my head toward your statutes and

1052. not toward my own selfish gain.

1053. Turn my eyes away from worthless things.

  1054. Preserve my life

1055. according to your word, God.

1056. Preserve our lives according to your

1057. word, God. We want to turn away from

1058. lesser things, God. We don't want the

1059. cheap counterfeit things that the world

1060. says is better. They're not.

1061. We will not trade in our birthright for

  1062. something less than.

1063. Jesus, you poured out your blood for us.

1064. You said, "That one's mine.

1065. I'll die for that one.

1066. I'll die cuz I'm the good shepherd.

1067. I lay down my life. I don't crawl in

1068. I don't seek in through the window.

1069. Jesus declared over all darkness, sin,

  1070. and death. You're done.

1071. It is finished. And these are mine.

  1072. Is the Holy Spirit.

1073. You came as a gift.

1074. The Bible says that as as the Messiah

1075. ascended back into heaven, the spirit

  1076. descended.

  1077. is this great exchange.

1078. We get you, Holy Spirit, to partner with

1079. and to hear from right now. I bless

1080. everyone under the sound of my voice

1081. with the gift to hear what you're saying

1082. over their lives. Open our ears. Help us

1083. to perceive. We don't need to ask you or

1084. beg you to come. You're here. We ask and

1085. beg that you would open our eyes and our

1086. ears to know that you are. We don't have

1087. to question if you're speaking. The

1088. question is, are we listening?

1089. We want to be quick to listen, slow to

  1090. speak.

1091. So we simply say that your children are

  1092. listening. Speak, Lord.

1093. Speak over us as we take up the bread

1094. this morning that symbolizes your broken

1095. body for us. As we take up the juice

1096. that represents your blood poured out, I

1097. pray that we would examine ourselves

1098. with a silver mind. Hey Jesus, I want

1099. you. I love you. You're for me.

1100. forgive my sins. Forgive my rebellion.

1101. I hear you calling me now [music] and I

  1102. want to answer.

1103. We love you, Lord. Thank you, [music]

1104. God. You are precious. You are kind and

  1105. you're a good father

1106. in Jesus name. Amen. If you need prayer

1107. this morning, we have our prayer team up

  1108. here.

1109. If you need the power of discernment in

1110. your life, if you feel like, man, this

1111. is this has been hard for me, would you

1112. come up and receive prayer? If you if

1113. you're like, man, I'm hearing this this

1114. morning. I want to be done with lesser

1115. things. Come up and pray. We would love

1116. to stand with you in this.

  1117. Believe God for it.

1118. He wants to give it to you.

1119. Table is set for communion as well.

  1120. I love you guys.
