  12. are because aunt Linda and I know, but a

  13. lot of folks don't, but they were in our

  14. church years ago.

  15. >> Yes, we My name is Pat and this is my

  16. wife.

  17. My daughter Luna and my son Leo. This is

  18. Leo's first time here.

  19. >> Okay.

  20. >> Luna was left here when she was two

  21. years old.

  22. >> Yeah. Yeah. And it was 10 years ago.

  23. >> Yeah.

  24. >> 12 years ago. That's right.

  25. >> 12. Yeah. It's been a long time. Yeah.

  26. >> 12 years ago we were here. Yeah.

  27. >> So, we live in Japan.

  29. faces as well.

  30. >> Yeah.

  31. >> Good to have you here. Welcome.

  32. [clears throat]

  33. >> Welcome.

  34. >> Okay.

  35. We're doing a series on great text in

  36. the Bible and we're in the book of

  37. Colossians right now. If you would open

  38. your Bibles to the book of Colossians,

  39. this goes under our great text series.

  40. I have to admit,

  41. we all have our different books of the

  42. Bible that we really like. And I love

  43. the book of Colossians. It's been a

  44. great blessing to me over the years. I

  45. love teaching it verse by verse and

  46. taught it here several times. I love

  47. studying it and thinking about it. It's

  48. a little book with a big message.

  49. It's a little book that we need to hear

  50. and know well, especially in the days in

  51. which we live.

  52. It's concise.

  53. It's profound.

  54. It super exalts our Lord Jesus from

  55. beginning to end.

  56. And uh this is not our text this

  57. morning, but I want to start reading

  58. this one. First Colossians 1:15,

    Colossians 1:15

  59. speaking of our blessed Lord,

  60. the Apostle Paul reminds this local

  61. assembly

  62. just who Jesus is. Now, they knew that,

  63. but they needed to hear it again in

  64. light of the situation they're in. And

  65. we know it, but we need to hear it

  66. again.

  67. Speaking of our Lord, he says, "Who is

  68. Colossians 1:15, the image of the

    Colossians 1:15

  69. invisible God, the firstborn

  70. of all creation."

  71. Now, I'm not going to preach this text,

  72. but firstborn doesn't mean he was the

  73. first created. It means he's the one

  74. that gets everything.

  75. The firstborn son in the Old Testament

  76. was the one that got the double

  77. inheritance. Well, Jesus gets more than

  78. the double. He gets it all.

  79. He's the firstborn of all creation. So

  80. he's over everything. For by him were

  81. all things created that are in heaven

  82. that are in earth, visible and

  83. invisible, whether they be thrones or

  84. dominions or principalities and powers.

  85. All things were created by him. And

  86. here's why I said that. For him.

  87. For him. It's all for him.

  88. And what a precious thought that is.

  89. And he's before all things and by him

  90. all things create consist. So he's the

  91. creator of all things and he's the heir

  92. of all things. He gets it all.

  93. And if you're in Christ and you're

  94. you're your uh know the Lord as your

  95. savior. We are joint hes with Christ. So

  96. if he gets it all, what do we get?

  97. We get it too.

  98. So we don't have to worry about where we

  99. stand in this world as far as stuff is

  100. concerned.

  101. We get everything in the end.

  102. So it's it's just precious. He exalts

  103. the Lord. And it says in verse 18, he is

  104. the head of the body, the church who is

  105. the beginning and the firstborn from the

  106. dead,

  107. that in all things he might have the

  108. preeminence.

  109. For it pleased the father that in him

  110. should all fold as well.

  111. Paul could not say greater things about

  112. Jesus than what he wrote in that verse.

  113. It's incredible verse. It's an

  114. incredible verse. Now, that's not the

  115. only one. This this whole book is uh

  116. full of that. And I'd like to call your

  117. attention to chapter 2, verse 9. This is

  118. more where we're going to be.

  119. Well, I'll go back to verse eight

  120. because there was a problem in this

  121. church.

  122. And Jesus knew how to treat the problem.

  123. He knew what they needed.

  124. And so, he gives them a double dose of

  125. Jesus Christ.

  126. That's the answer.

  127. Get your eyes on the shepherd. Get your

  128. eyes on the son of God. Get your heart

  129. focused on him. He's king of kings. He's

  130. lord of lords. He gets everything. He's

  131. He created everything. Get her eyes on

  132. him. But the teacher the teachers that

  133. had come into this church in the little

  134. town of Colasse were diverting people

  135. from looking at Jesus.

  136. And so he says in verse 8, "Beware lest

  137. any man spoil you through philosophy and

  138. vain deceit after the tradition of men,

  139. after the rem rudiments of the world,

  140. and not after Christ." That's not saying

  141. philosophy is bad. There's good

  142. philosophy and there's bad philosophy.

  143. But to get over occupied with the

  144. speculations of men is a big mistake. We

  145. need to know the revelation from God.

  146. Now, as a young person, I took 30ome

  147. hours of philosophy at OU, and I'm I'm

  148. not sorry I did, but there's a big

  149. difference of the from God's re

  150. revelation and man's speculation.

  151. So he says he says in verse n for in him

  152. in Jesus dwells all the fullness of the

  153. godhead bodily and you are complete in

  154. him who's the head of all principality

  155. and power. Principality and power deals

  156. with not human beings but angelic beings

  157. and different orders of angels. And

  158. whatever they are, he's above all of

  159. them. He's in charge of all of them.

  160. good angels, fallen angels. He's over

  161. everything. That's those invisible

  162. beings that God create that are created

  163. beings. And so, uh, he says in verse 11,

  164. in whom also you are circumcised with

  165. the circumcision made without hands.

  166. We're going to talk about that a little

  167. bit today.

  168. in putting off the body of the sins of

  169. the flesh by the circumcision of Christ,

  170. buried with him in baptism, in which

  171. you're also risen with him through faith

  172. in the operation of God, who raised him

  173. from the dead. And you being dead in

  174. your sins and uncircumcision of your

  175. flesh, hath he made alive together with

  176. him, having forgiven you all trespasses.

  177. You said, "Well, I didn't understand

  178. that first part." Well, get about get

  179. this part. Blotting out the handwriting

  180. of ordinances was against us. That's the

  181. ten commandments.

  182. which was contrary to us and took it out

  183. of the way, nailing it to the cross. The

  184. Ten Commandments are perfect, but we're

  185. not.

  186. We're lawb breakakers.

  187. And so,

  188. and so that's the picture. And having

  189. spoiled principalities and powers, and

  190. now he's going back to fallen angels, he

  191. made a show of them openly, triumphing

  192. over them in it. Let no man therefore

  193. judge you in food and drink, respect the

  194. feast days or new boons or Sabbath days,

  195. which a shadow of things to come, but

  196. the body is Christ.

  197. What's going on? Their attention and

  198. their interests were getting scattered

  199. into all kinds of directions,

  200. speculations. Paul says, "Get back to

  201. Jesus.

  202. Get back to him."

  203. And these were true Christians. These

  204. people weren't uh unsaved people. They

  205. were true Christians, but they got

  206. diverted.

  207. And people get diverted all the time.

  208. So, this is a marvelous section.

  209. Everything about it is good. And one of

  210. my favorite verses, I got to read this

  211. one, is chapter 3, verse one. If you

    Isaiah 3 chapter mention

  212. then be risen with Christ, seek those

  213. things which are above,

  214. where Christ sits on the right hand of

  215. God. Set your affection on things above,

  216. not on things on the earth. And then he

  217. tells them how to live on the earth

  218. while you're looking at the things above

  219. from that perspective.

  220. A marvelous thing.

  221. This is a

  222. th this is such a marvelous book. The

  223. first three chapters of this book are

  224. theology on fire.

  225. Paul's Paul's Paul's ready to go. He's

  226. coming out swinging

  227. because he didn't start this church. Uh,

  228. one of Paul's disciples started at

  229. Apaparus and the Apaparus traveled to

  230. Rome where Paul was in prison, told him

  231. what was going on. Paul said, "I'll take

  232. care of that." And so he wrote back to

  233. the church in Colasse and this letter

  234. came back to them and he does it with

  235. love and with grace. And so the first

  236. three chapters are theological. It's a

  237. it's a theological fireworks.

  238. Paul's really putting the the he's

  239. putting the the the uh heat on these

  240. false teachers. But the last chapter is

  241. personal and and so Paul's not just all

  242. theological fireworks. There's a

  243. personal love in this book. He meets

  244. different people and so forth. But it's

  245. quite a display

  246. and it must have knocked the wind out of

  247. the inf infiltrators of this little

  248. church. And they realized right away we

  249. are overmatched. We we can't handle him.

  250. He's the he's the he's the uh uh uh be

  251. beyond our ability to deal with.

  252. And basically what Paul is saying, you

  253. don't need to hear their rules. You

  254. don't need to hear their regulations.

  255. You don't hear their speculations. You

  256. don't to hear their fantasies about what

  257. they know about angels, which they don't

  258. that they're making up. You just need to

  259. be you just need about Jesus. The whole

  260. Bible's about Jesus. If you're not, you

  261. need to study the Bible. Yes, there's

  262. practical things in the Bible, how to

  263. live and how to do this and that, what

  264. not to do. The main thing, it's a love

  265. letter from God

  266. about Jesus.

  267. That's what it is. If you don't read the

  268. Bible like a love letter about Jesus to

  269. you, you're misreading it. No wonder you

  270. don't like it. You think it's a bunch of

  271. rules. Yes, there's rules in the Bible,

  272. but that's not the point. The law is a

  273. school master to bring us to Christ.

  274. When I found out I can't keep the Ten

  275. Commandments, I broke all of them. Now

  276. what?

  277. Well, I need a savior.

  278. I need Jesus. and we begin to appreciate

  279. him and who he is and what he's done.

  280. If we think we can save ourselves, we

  281. don't appreciate the one who saved us.

  282. I I almost drowned three times as a kid.

  283. I got pulled out all the three times and

  284. I remember everybody that pulled me out

  285. and I I I didn't learn to swim till I

  286. was 20 20 years old.

  287. So that I had quite a few times almost

  288. dreamt.

  289. Thank I thank God for the people that

  290. saved me.

  291. And so uh can we not thank God for Jesus

  292. Christ who saved us from something

  293. greater than drowning?

  294. Do we not remember him at the Lord's

  295. supper? Should we not enjoy him when we

  296. read the Bible?

  297. The Bible says the volume of the book

  298. that's written to me to do your will, oh

  299. God. It's all about Jesus.

  300. And so what Paul does as he as he comes

  301. through this uh uh he he he does it for

  302. a reason. He wants everybody in that

  303. church to be singing all that thrills my

  304. soul is Jesus.

  305. He wants everybody in that church to be

  306. singing all I need. You know that song

  307. gospel song Jesus Christ has made to me

  308. all I need. All I need. He alone is all

  309. my plea.

  310. He is all my need.

  311. So Paul's got purposes here that he's

  312. aiming at. and he pulls the rug out from

  313. under the false teachers and the and and

  314. uh this is this is a really weird

  315. mixture of Greek speculation, philosophy

  316. and religion and uh Jud

  317. Judeo

  318. legalism

  319. some kind of proto I call it

  320. protonnosticism full-blown nasticism

  321. didn't come to the second century this

  322. was kind of a beginning of that I'm not

  323. going to go down that road too far. But

  324. these guys had the big head and thought

  325. they knew something and and they're all

  326. over occupied with visions of angels and

  327. stuff like that which were all was all

  328. in their imagination. So Paul um dealt

  329. with them and he dealt with them so well

  330. you think wow Paul I don't want to go

  331. against him.

  332. He he was an inspired apostle

  333. and he just smoked.

  334. And that's if you know the Bible and I

  335. didn't as a young person. I didn't start

  336. studying the Bible till I was a senior

  337. at OU

  338. and I read it from cover to cover and

  339. all of a sudden my eyes got open to so

  340. many things and I thought well I didn't

  341. open my Bible before

  342. what was the matter with me?

  343. And so uh it gives you an insight you do

  344. not have. And these people were young

  345. Christians in Colassi. Colass is a

  346. little town. Colasse and Laosa and

  347. Heropouloolis are all nearby there. I

  348. mean they're within a very short bus

  349. ride of each other. Let's say

  350. guess I'm guessing five miles, six

  351. miles, nine miles, something like that.

  352. And uh I I remember getting off a bus

  353. right at Colassi. We were looking

  354. archaeological sites on this tour and

  355. the cred says you can go up there if you

  356. want to. Uh but uh it's a pretty steep

  357. climb and I looked and yeah, that's a

  358. steep climb. I think I'm a little too

  359. old to go up there. I'd sure like to go.

  360. We'd already seen the other cities, but

  361. it was right by Heropouloolis and

  362. Colassi, maybe nine miles at the most, I

  363. guess.

  364. And I think I made the right decision

  365. because I was as I standing there

  366. outside the bus thinking where I should

  367. go, an older couple came over the

  368. horizon and fell down the hill.

  369. [laughter]

  370. Poor woman. It was it was something.

  371. Yeah, I missed Colassi, but I I could

  372. miss the falling down the hill, too. So

  373. it it it was but these are cities that

  374. interacted with each other that knew

  375. each other. And so the letter to

  376. Colassian, the letter to Laiaa and uh

  377. her uh the uh the other one I said they

  378. all knew each other. They interacted

  379. with each other quite a bit and no doubt

  380. these things were infecting everybody.

  381. So Paul dealt with it fully completely

  382. and I believe he saved that church.

  383. And this is not a it's not that Paul was

  384. so slick and intelligent. He was he had

  385. a super IQ, but that's not what it was.

  386. Paul was an intelligent man. He was a

  387. convincing man. He he was a man who had

  388. a lot of understanding how to deal

  389. things. We'd have said of him, he could

  390. sell stripes to a zebra or ice to an

  391. Eskimo. I mean, the guy was really

  392. fluent if you read his writings. But

  393. that was inspired scripture. God was

  394. mediating that through his mind and his

  395. heart.

  396. And what was going on here was one

  397. called it oriental philosophical

  398. mysticism. It was a philosophical

  399. theosophical speculation anti-Christian

  400. throughout.

  401. And I think that's certainly right.

  402. And so they had excessive reverence for

  403. being

  404. uh

  405. for for angels that they thought were

  406. angels were that were lower than God.

  407. They were always talking about the

  408. angels and they all talking about the

  409. angels. Paul says, "Talk about God.

  410. Talk about God."

  411. That's his picture.

  412. One Bible study book that I have says of

  413. this chapter in Colossians, the greatest

  414. christoologgical passage in the entire

  415. Bible.

  416. I mean this is really high stuff this

  417. book chapter he's talking about chapter

  418. 1 verse 16 to 20.

  419. And he said it's a message probably more

  420. urgently needed in our day than even in

  421. Paul's day. We need this book. We need

  422. it. We need to we need to know what's

  423. going on

  424. and uh we need need to know the message

  425. here.

  426. So may God help us to do that this

  427. morning and we're just touching it this

  428. morning. I'd like you to turn with me to

  429. Colossians 2:9

    Colossians 2:9

  430. and and following.

  431. Paul says, "In him dwells

  432. all the fullness of the Godhead bodily."

  433. There's nothing true of God the Father

  434. that isn't also true of Jesus Christ.

  435. When they killed Jesus, they killed God.

  436. That's that's it.

  437. The God man died on the cross.

  438. It was a horrible sin

  439. [clears throat] to execute God falsely.

  440. It's basically what happened. He's the

  441. God man. Of course, you can't kill God

  442. the Father. He's a spirit. You can't

  443. kill God the Spirit. He's a spirit. But

  444. the the God the Son became a man and

  445. they killed him.

  446. They executed him.

  447. And so what Paul's is reminding this

  448. church is the infinite glories of our

  449. savior who died on the cross for us. In

  450. him dwells the fullness, all the

  451. fullness of the godhead bodily. There's

  452. nothing true of the godhead that's

  453. father and spirit and pre-incarnate son.

  454. That's not true of Jesus. He is the

  455. pre-incarnate son of God.

  456. >> [clears throat]

  457. >> And so let's meditate on the infinite

  458. glories of our savior this morning.

  459. And notice what it says first. In verse

  460. 9, we have his identity. In verse 10,

  461. his sufficiency and in later in verse

  462. 10, his authority.

  463. Paul knows who he is. Paul knows

  464. how sufficient he is.

  465. What's that song? Gospel song. Jesus

  466. Christ has made to me all I need. All I

  467. need.

  468. And so Paul says, "You don't need what

  469. they're selling."

  470. Have you ever tried somebody Have you

  471. ever had somebody try to sell you

  472. something you don't need?

  473. That's a lost cause. You know, I got 10

  474. of those. I don't need anymore.

  475. And so, you know, that's the point. So

  476. Paul focuses on his identity, verse 9,

  477. his sufficiency, verse 10, and his

  478. authority. The last part of verse 10,

  479. he said, "In him dwells all the fullness

  480. of the godhead

  481. bodily. All the planitude of deity lives

  482. in Christ."

  483. That was true of when he was conceived.

  484. That's true of when he was born. That's

  485. true of when he lived down here. That's

  486. true of when he risen. It's true of when

  487. he ascended. It's true of where he uh

  488. where he sits at the right hand of God

  489. and it's true when he comes back

  490. and amazing. He's the bridegroom and

  491. we're the bride. Think about that.

  492. We're creatures and we're not only

  493. creatures, we're fallen creatures, but

  494. we get to be in a relationship with him,

  495. a love relationship forever

  496. if we know the Lord.

  497. These are the strongest possible

  498. verses to show that the man Christ Jesus

  499. is incarnate God. The whole glories of

  500. the total of the total of what God is is

  501. in him. He is Emmanuel, God with us.

  502. That's what the prophet said Isaiah in

  503. chapter 7 and that's what the New

  504. Testament says in Matthew.

  505. God was manifest in the flesh. That's

  506. what 1 Timothy 3:16 says. And Paul's

    1 Timothy 3:16

  507. saying any system that's not occupied

  508. with him is wrong.

  509. Just wrong.

  510. Any philosophical system, any religion

  511. that doesn't put put him front and

  512. center, it's wrong. And by the way,

  513. that's true of any church.

  514. Churches should exalt Christ. Christians

  515. should be talking about Jesus, right?

  516. And you get off on this issue and that

  517. issue. You might even be right, but

  518. you're wrong.

  519. We teach the whole council of God. Yeah,

  520. we need to know about this and that, but

  521. we need to always be focused on Jesus

  522. Christ in the whole thing. That's where

  523. the power is. That's where the beauty

  524. is. That's where the joy is.

  525. That's where the enthusiasm should be.

  526. We've all been in churches. They're all

  527. excited about some dumb little thing.

  528. And whether even if they're right,

  529. they're wrong.

  530. I hope we get that in our head.

  531. We're here to magnify Christ. We're here

  532. to glorify Christ.

  533. And it doesn't mean we don't study the

  534. different issues of the day. It doesn't

  535. mean we don't try to understand all the

  536. Bible and the things about it. But we if

  537. we love anything more than him, if we're

  538. more excited about anything more than

  539. him, there's [clears throat] something

  540. wrong.

  541. It's just like where Col the Colasse

  542. Church was.

  543. And so the fullness of deity has its

  544. present and permanent dwelling in

  545. Christ. And you can put the sign up, God

  546. lives here.

  547. God lives here.

  548. And the supreme test of any religious

  549. system is what it does with Jesus.

  550. And I'm talking Christian systems as

  551. well as pagan systems, other kind of

  552. systems. We should never ever think of

  553. robbing him of his preeminence.

  554. And it's not just theological error.

  555. Theological error and practical error go

  556. together.

  557. If you don't believe right, you can't

  558. live right.

  559. Just if you're wrong about Jesus, you're

  560. going to be wrong about life.

  561. And I'm not saying there aren't people

  562. that don't know Jesus that can't do good

  563. things. I'm saying at the core of their

  564. being, they're they're missing the main

  565. thing.

  566. I I've known non-Christians that very

  567. nice people, very like make good

  568. neighbors in one sense. make people that

  569. you like to be around, but they don't

  570. know the Lord. There's there's an

  571. emptiness there. There it's like a it's

  572. like a beautiful car without an engine.

  573. So it says in him dwells all the

  574. fullness of the godhead bodily. He the

  575. wholesome and substance of the infinite

  576. attributes of the being of God are in

  577. him.

  578. And that's the one Peter says bore our

  579. sins in his own body. And that's the one

  580. Paul said he reconcile we were

  581. reconciled in him through in his body.

  582. Uh and Hebrews 10:5 says of Jesus a body

    Hebrews 10:5

  583. hast thou prepared for me. Jesus didn't

  584. have a body in his pre-incarnate state.

  585. He was part of the trinity.

  586. So the body and blood that bought our

  587. redemption

  588. did so and could only do so because

  589. deity dwelt in them.

  590. What does uh Paul tell the Ephesian

  591. elders in Acts 20:28?

    Acts 20:28

  592. Shepherd or feed the church of God which

  593. he has purchased with his own blood.

  594. That's an important verse.

  595. Feed the church of God which he's

  596. purchased with his own blood.

  597. Does God the Father have blood?

  598. No. He's a spirit. Does God the Holy

  599. Spirit have blood? No.

  600. Jesus was made flesh and blood. He

  601. became incarnate. So when Paul's saying

  602. feed the church of God which he's

  603. purchased with his own blood, he's

  604. talking about Jesus, the death of the

  605. second person of the triune God.

  606. We believe in one God, not three gods,

  607. but one member of the Godhead became a

  608. man and therefore died on the cross and

  609. took our hell because that's what the

  610. cross was. The worst place in the Bible

  611. is not

  612. is not even hell. It's the lake of fire.

  613. And Jesus took all that.

  614. He paid all that

  615. for those who know him.

  616. How can we even imagine anything greater

  617. to be done?

  618. He's an infinite person and it took an

  619. infinite person to pay an infinite

  620. penalty and he paid it. Nobody else

  621. could do it.

  622. We saying, "No, no one ever cared for me

  623. like Jesus." Well, no one else could

  624. save me but Jesus.

  625. There was nobody else.

  626. It takes God to save you from God. It

  627. takes God to save you from your sins.

  628. Our sin is a bigger problem than we

  629. imagine.

  630. Our sin is a big issue. Jesus didn't

  631. come to deal with something little. He

  632. came to deal with the main problem of

  633. all eternity.

  634. Um,

  635. so

  636. I hope we just look at that first point.

  637. In him dwells all the fullness of the

  638. godhead bodily. His identity.

  639. Oh, now we know who he is.

  640. his identity

  641. and now his sufficiency.

  642. Because of who he is, he can do what no

  643. one else could do.

  644. And you are complete in him.

  645. Colossians 2:10, who's the head of all

    Colossians 2:10

  646. principalities and power?

  647. In whom you're circumcised with

  648. circumcision made without hands in

  649. putting off the body of the sin of the

  650. flesh by the circumcision of Christ.

  651. What a precious thing we are. We we have

  652. he is sufficiency is because of his

  653. identity.

  654. And what's the Bible say in first John?

  655. He that has the son has life.

  656. What's the opposite of that?

  657. He that has not the son has

  658. talking about eternal life.

  659. You want eternal life, there's only one

  660. person that's got it is Jesus. You got

  661. to get it from him. Walmart doesn't have

  662. it. They don't have it.

  663. You got to get it from him.

  664. And that's it's a wonderful thing. We

  665. have a full salvation verses 11 and 12.

  666. We have a full forgiveness verses 13 and

  667. 14. and we have full victory. Verse 15,

  668. and it it says, and it's because we're

  669. complete in him who's the head of all

  670. principality and power,

  671. in whom you're circumcised with a

  672. circumcision, made without hands, and

  673. putting off the body of sins of flesh by

  674. the circumcision of Christ, buried with

  675. him in baptism, in which you're ris.

  676. That's not water baptism, by the way. We

  677. believe in water baptism here. We

  678. baptize people with water. This is

  679. spirit baptism. This is when you're put

  680. into the body of Christ.

  681. Just like there's a circumcision not

  682. made with hands, there's a baptism not

  683. done with hands. [clears throat]

  684. And so uh circumcision and baptism both

  685. are a religious right that's done

  686. physical religious right but they stand

  687. for things behind that and above it.

  688. So we have a full salvation. We have

  689. full forgiveness

  690. and that's a blessedness.

  691. There's a full salvation in verse 11 and

  692. 12. There's full forgiveness in 13 and

  693. 14. There's full victory in verse 15.

  694. Let me let me go back and get that verse

  695. 11.

  696. The full full salvation 11 and 12.

  697. Already read that. Full uh forgiveness

  698. verse 13 and 14. And you being dead in

  699. your sins and uncircumcision of your

  700. flesh. He's talking about Gentiles.

  701. uh have be made alive together with him

  702. that's spiritually alive having forgiven

  703. you all trespasses

  704. not just the little trespasses not just

  705. the middlesized trespasses

  706. all trespasses

  707. the blood of Jesus Christ the Apostle

  708. John says cleanses from all sin

  709. I'm a very bad one about getting food on

  710. my white shirts

  711. and my ties. So, I always take my tie

  712. off when I eat just I just can't afford

  713. to buy more ties.

  714. And so, but even when I do that, usually

  715. the last bite of the eat meal and drop

  716. it on my shirt.

  717. What an agony that is. This was not

  718. coming out. It's a good shirt. It's my

  719. best white shirt. Ah, I get out the the

  720. soap and try to deal with it. But you

  721. know, just like just like a a food stain

  722. on a shirt, we are stained. We are

  723. ruined.

  724. Only Jesus could clean us up. Only

  725. Jesus.

  726. Thou soap can't do it. You need the Lord

  727. Jesus. And so may God help us. And so

  728. there's a full salvation. There's a full

  729. forgiveness. Verse 13. in you being dead

  730. in your sins and uncircumcision your

  731. flesh as he made alive together with him

  732. having forgiven you all trespasses

  733. blotting out the handwriting of

  734. ordinances was against us which was

  735. contrary to us took it out of the way

  736. nailing it to the cross and why he was

  737. on that he spoiled principalities and

  738. powers that's full victory so the

  739. devil's got nothing on me now

  740. when the devil tells you you don't

  741. deserve heaven you don't deserve

  742. Yeah,

  743. we could say, "Look, I know I don't I

  744. don't deserve heaven. I don't I don't

  745. need eternal life. I don't deserve being

  746. in the new heavens and new earth with

  747. Jesus forever. I don't deserve that."

  748. But he paid the bill.

  749. The bill's paid.

  750. I deserve judgment. I deserve punishment

  751. forever. I've neglected God. I've got

  752. plenty of sins of omission and

  753. commission.

  754. If we win on a contest, who's the

  755. biggest sinner in this room? Who do you

  756. think it'd win?

  757. I don't know. God knows. God knows who's

  758. the biggest sinner in this room.

  759. I guess it might be me, but I don't

  760. know. But what you know, we don't know,

  761. do we? But say we are the biggest one.

  762. Say we're the biggest one in the whole

  763. world.

  764. We're not just the biggest center in

  765. Ohio or United States. We we are uh we

  766. are a

  767. major league sinner

  768. or major league sinner.

  769. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses from

  770. all sin. Guess who was a major league

  771. sinner? I mean major league. He was

  772. Olympic

  773. Paul himself.

  774. What do you do before he was a

  775. Christians? before he was a Christian.

  776. He murdered Christians.

  777. He murdered. That's what he did. He went

  778. around killing as many Christians as he

  779. could.

  780. He did it legally through the Sanhedrin,

  781. but he did it.

  782. He said, "I'm not fit to be called an

  783. apostle. I can't believe God made me an

  784. apostle. I persecuted the church of

  785. God."

  786. So if God could forgive Paul sins, if

  787. God could give Paul salvation, if God

  788. could give Paul full victory

  789. and the victory is over satanic powers

  790. because you're not your own. You're

  791. bought with a price. Glorify God in your

  792. Bible in your body. But even when you

  793. were before unsaved, you weren't your

  794. own. The devil had you with both hands.

  795. You weren't you weren't free.

  796. And having spoiled principalities and

  797. powers, he made a show of them openly,

  798. triumphing over them in it.

  799. So there's this invisible war. This is

  800. conflict of the ages. And Jesus is in on

  801. it. And he won the battle already. The

  802. main battle's been won. We have full

  803. salvation, full forgiveness, full

  804. victory.

  805. I've been teaching in Jeremiah, and I

  806. love that book. It's it's not an easy

  807. book to teach or to listen to or to

  808. preach, but it's a wonderful book. And

  809. God there said, "My people have

  810. committed Jeremiah 2:13, two evils."

    Jeremiah 2:13

  811. They've committed two evils.

  812. They've forsaken me the fountain of

  813. living waters

  814. and you out to them sistns, broken

  815. sistns that can hold no water. Two

  816. evils. In other words, they don't want

  817. anything to do with me. They left me.

  818. And I I uh uh and they've forsaken me.

  819. The source of living water. Living water

  820. is running water, right? Living water is

  821. like a river. It's not standing water

  822. with a lot of pollution in it. It's it's

  823. moving water.

  824. God says, "I'm the fountain of living

  825. waters. They left me and they built

  826. these sistns to hold rain water. And the

  827. systems got cracks in them. Everything

  828. they did, all these idols, they're all

  829. cracked. They can't they can't do for

  830. you what you

  831. you want done.

  832. And so

  833. it's a beautiful picture. I I I make it

  834. like in my backyard, we've got my wife's

  835. got several bird baths in the backyard

  836. all over the place and they go with the

  837. funds that feed the birds. I don't know

  838. what the birds would do without my wife

  839. cuz she just she feeds them, she waters

  840. them and stuff. And so there's a bunch

  841. of bunch of bird bass. But we don't just

  842. have that. We got a water hose in our

  843. backyard.

  844. Now those bird bass crack can happen.

  845. The water goes out where the sun dries

  846. it all out. The water gets dirty and

  847. murky.

  848. There's a big difference between having

  849. the water hose

  850. and having the bird bath. The birds

  851. don't know the difference, but the only

  852. reason there's anything in any bird bath

  853. is because the post puts it there.

  854. Now, God is the fountain of living

  855. waters. He is that.

  856. False religion, false philosophy, false

  857. ways of thinking are cracked. They're

  858. cracked. They don't hold water.

  859. They're not helpful.

  860. They're hurtful. They promise something.

  861. They give nothing.

  862. So here we'd see a full salvation, a

  863. full forgiveness, a full victory

  864. in verse 15. And having spoiled

  865. principalities and powers, he made a

  866. show over them openly, triumphing over

  867. them in it. So he says in verse 16,

  868. don't listen to these people.

  869. Don't let them get you.

  870. You got two ears. Use both of them, but

  871. don't listen to him, but listen to the

  872. Lord.

  873. So

  874. very important. It's very basic stuff.

  875. And to ignore Jesus is to is a very

  876. dangerous thing. John Calvin wrote, I'm

  877. going to quote one I'm going to quote

  878. the Calvinist named John Calvin and then

  879. I'll quote an Armenian this morning. So

  880. even I'll do it fair, right?

  881. John Calvin said, "You are made you are

  882. you are made full does not mean that the

  883. perfection of Christ is transfused into

  884. us, but that there are in him resources

  885. from which we may be filled that nothing

  886. be wanting in us.

  887. Every spiritual need, everyone is met by

  888. him."

  889. And Charles Wesley said, "Thou, O

  890. Christ, are all I want, more than all in

  891. thee I find."

  892. So we see our Lord's identity, his

  893. suffering, and his authority.

  894. It's not wise. It's not safe. It's not

  895. biblical to be diverted from that.

  896. And you know, we're living in times that

  897. um

  898. new inventions have uh been in invented

  899. that made previous things obsolete,

  900. right?

  901. I mean, you just look down through

  902. history. Medieval armor, everybody, you

  903. had to have that armor on. Well, and

  904. castles, medieval armor and castles were

  905. made obsolete by the invention of

  906. gunpowder.

  907. The calvaryary charge was made obsolete

  908. by the invention of the machine gun.

  909. The automobile made carriage makers uh

  910. and wagon wheel workers out of work.

  911. They became obsolete.

  912. Remember the old television set and some

  913. of you are old enough in the 50s with

  914. the tubes in it?

  915. They're not even worth fixing today

  916. unless you're some kind of a collector.

  917. Or how about the the computer? Your

  918. first computer. Would you want to go

  919. back to that? Or your first iPhone

  920. or those little flip phones?

  921. [laughter]

  922. I could beat you, Case. I would like to

  923. go I'd be honest. I'd kind of like to go

  924. back to the old phone in the 60s on the

  925. wall.

  926. You know, when World War II started,

  927. 600 American generals were fired.

  928. Why?

  929. 600. You think, "Wait a minute, you need

  930. all these g you need of all times World

  931. War II's going. We need these generals."

  932. They were fighting the last war, not the

  933. first war. And new inventions made them

  934. obsolete in their thinking. The same

  935. thing happened in the Civil War.

  936. They were fighting in the last war. So

  937. everybody standing there shooting in

  938. line. That that was that didn't work too

  939. well in the Civil War. Why? Because, you

  940. know, gunsmithing had improved. They had

  941. they had people had better aim and so

  942. forth. So Paul says, "You're complete in

  943. him. You're never going to get anything

  944. better. Nothing's ever going to make

  945. Jesus obsolete."

  946. 2,000 years haven't changed that.

  947. and his fullness meets our fallenness

  948. and you're complete in him.

  949. You need a s you you need the Lord

  950. Jesus. You don't need a surgical

  951. salvation. Uh you have spiritually

  952. circumcised. You got the reality the

  953. other was a picture of

  954. what a precious thought that is.

  955. That doesn't mean things like

  956. circumcision or baptism are of no

  957. importance or anything else. But what if

  958. either one can't change this?

  959. If you're not saved, all that doesn't

  960. mean anything.

  961. Doesn't mean anything in the Old

  962. Testament or the New Testament.

  963. And so the important thing is the change

  964. inside. The important thing is having

  965. the reality of what the symbols pictured

  966. and that reality uh is salvation in

  967. Christ and the life of Christ in us.

  968. I think it was pastor John MacArthur

  969. that mentioned this and I can't read my

  970. notes real well today but somebody was

  971. asking him there was a Catholic Roman

  972. Catholic boxer and every time before a

  973. match he cross himself and they asked

  974. John MacArthur uh does that help him

  975. and he said well if he can fight he can

  976. [laughter]

  977. if you can't fight you can go through

  978. all the motions too bad too bad so the

  979. big thing is a changed life inside out

  980. salvation

  981. and uh a circumcision made without hands

  982. is a supernatural work of God in your

  983. heart.

  984. The Bible says if any man be in Christ

  985. or woman, any man, any person be in

  986. Christ, he's a new creation.

  987. Old things passed away.

  988. All things are become new.

  989. That's such a precious verse.

  990. And a man-made salvation can't save you,

  991. whether it's something people were

  992. promoting now or something they were

  993. promoting then.

  994. So, what a what a wonderful thing. I'm

  995. glad I could share this with you this

  996. morning.

  997. I'm glad we can look for something

  998. beyond human ceremonies, even if they're

  999. God-given human ceremonies. I'm glad

  1000. there's a circumcision of the ear.

1001. Jeremiah 6:10, of the lips, Exodus

Jeremiah 6:10 Exodus 6 chapter mention

1002. chapter 6, and of the heart, Leviticus

    Leviticus 26:41

  1003. 26:41

  1004. and Jeremiah 9:26. There's an inside

    Jeremiah 9:26

  1005. work that God does.

1006. Uh, no need for additions. We got all we

  1007. need

1008. and the reason is the excellency of our

  1009. savior.

1010. So, I hope that this has been a

1011. wonderful picture for you of who we have

1012. in Christ and what we have in Christ.

1013. Uh, and if you don't know the Lord,

1014. several visitors here this morning. If

1015. you don't know the Lord, we couldn't be

  1016. happier that you're here. And there's a

1017. lot of things in the Bible nobody

1018. understands in this life. We know in

1019. part, we prophesy in part. But if you

1020. you need to know who Jesus is. He's the

1021. God of heaven who died for you

1022. and rose again conquering sin and death.

1023. Your two biggest enemies is sin and

1024. death. He dealt with both of them all at

  1025. once.

  1026. And so

1027. you you're not going to go wrong by

1028. staying with him. People say if you're

1029. out of date, you're talking about

1030. somebody was here 2,000 years ago. Yeah,

1031. but he arose from the dead. He's still

1032. here. He's in heaven. He's coming again.

  1033. so

1034. we can rest and rejoice in him. Father,

1035. we thank you for what we've looked at

  1036. this morning. If there's anyone doesn't

1037. know the Lord, may the spirit of God

1038. take the word of God and take something

1039. that was said from your word. We're born

  1040. again through the word

1041. and use your word today, Lord. Use it

1042. uh and do a work. You've done it in many

1043. of us here. Not that we're sinless or

  1044. perfect. We're works in progress. We're

1045. not what we ought to be, but we're not

1046. what we used to be. And we thank you for

1047. that. And we're certainly not what we

1048. will be when we'll be made like Jesus in

1049. Christ. And we thank you for the gospel.

1050. It's not by works of righteousness which

1051. we've done, but according to his mercy,

  1052. he saved us.

1053. Every other religion is a merit theology

  1054. because it's a man-made religion.

1055. Only the gospel is a gospel of grace and

1056. gives God the glory and really

  1057. [clears throat] works

1058. because it comes from the creator

  1059. redeemer.

1060. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
