  1. you with us this morning

  2. as we continue in our study of the word

  3. of God.

  4. Uh this particular passage deals with

  5. both of the series we're doing in the

  6. great text of the Bible and the

  7. resurrection of Jesus. So we're this

  8. this could be filed under either one of

  9. those. And I call your attention to the

  10. book of Acts chapter 3.

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  11. And we we often call it the acts of the

  12. apostles which is correct but not

  13. completely correct. It's really the acts

  14. of the risen Christ through the

  15. apostles. Right? Because he's doing he's

  16. accomplishing the things that he wants

  17. to accomplished through them. And of

  18. course, the book of Acts

  19. focuses not on all all the apostles,

  20. although they're there uh in chapter 1,

  21. in chapter 15 and other places, but

  22. mainly on Peter and Paul. There's a

  23. reason for that, but we're not going to

  24. get in into that right now. Focuses on

  25. them. There were more acts of the Lord

  26. Jesus through other apostles that are

  27. not recorded here. This is a sample to

  28. give us an it's not meant to be

  29. encyclopedic. It's meant to be a sample

  30. to give a a a clarity

  31. that Jesus isn't dead.

  32. He's alive.

  33. He's ascended. He's returning. And he's

  34. working in the world today through his

  35. people.

  36. Now that's a humbling, shocking

  37. revelation in itself that the risen and

  38. ascended Lord Jesus is using his church,

  39. the Christians that he is saved.

  40. Everybody that's saved is saved for a

  41. purpose.

  42. And part of that purpose is ministry to

  43. others that do not yet know the Lord.

  44. Part of that purpose is ministering to

  45. others who do know the Lord.

  46. So, evangelizing the lost, edifying the

  47. saved, and bringing glory to Jesus in

  48. all of it. So, the book of Acts is one

  49. of my favorite books. I love teaching

  50. this book. I really am always thrilled

  51. whenever I get to do it.

  52. Uh the last time I taught it was 2007 as

  53. a book study. Uh but I loved I love

  54. teaching book of acts.

  55. I call your attention to chapter three.

  56. The day of Pentecost has come and gone

  57. and the church has been born

  58. and the work uh and the work of God has

  59. uh taken off. Amazingly,

  60. 2,000 people get saved in one sermon.

  61. I'd say that's a pretty amazing start.

  62. So, we are now in this morning. We're

  63. going to spend our time in chapter

  64. three. And really, the scope of this is

  65. chapters three and four. We cannot get

  66. to everything here in one message. I

  67. think I preached five messages in these

  68. chapters uh years ago, but we'll just

  69. get a touch of it today.

  70. And let's look to the Lord in prayer.

  71. Father, thank you for the time we can

  72. spend together. Direct our thoughts

  73. in

  74. to the ways of our risen Lord. Your ways

  75. aren't our ways. Your thoughts aren't

  76. our thoughts. It's higher the as higher

  77. than the heavens are above the earth. So

  78. your thoughts are higher than our

  79. thoughts and your ways among our ways.

  80. But we're thankful that God who knows

  81. all and is everywhere and has a better

  82. plan than we could ever imagine or even

  83. comprehend

  84. is at work in our lives, in our

  85. churches, and in our world.

  86. So bless us this morning as we come to

  87. this familiar section of scripture in

  88. Jesus name. Amen.

  89. >> Amen.

  90. >> Okay, read with me the first part of the

  91. book of Acts if you would. I'll start

  92. reading in chapter 3 verse 1 and go

  93. along in your mind with me as we read.

  94. Now Peter and John went up together into

  95. the temple at the hour of prayer being

  96. the ninth hour

  97. and a certain man lame from his birth. I

  98. want you to underline that in your mind.

  99. This isn't someone who was couldn't walk

  100. because of an accident. This is a man

  101. who'd never walked [snorts]

  102. ever in his whole life. He was lame

  103. from his birth.

  104. There's going to be a miracle here from

  105. the risen Lord on someone

  106. [clears throat] who had never walked,

  107. who had a problem he was born with.

  108. Guess what? You and I have a problem we

  109. were born with.

  110. In sin did my mother conceive me, David

  111. said. He wasn't criticizing his mother.

  112. He was simply describing that the fallen

  113. nature [clears throat] uh uh comes to us

  114. through our parents and it came to them

  115. through their grandparents and the great

  116. great grandparents all the way back to

  117. Adam.

  118. So as Romans chapter 5 says, there's a

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  119. transmission of

  120. Adam's sin to the whole race legally.

  121. Legally.

  122. Uh that comes directly from Adam to us

  123. theologically and legally. That's our

  124. legal standing. We are condemned. We are

  125. a fallen race. We are born

  126. spiritually

  127. crippled.

  128. Can't do anything for God.

  129. But then it's also there's also this

  130. other side physically

  131. we are physically limited because of the

  132. fall of man

  133. legally guilty physically limited and

  134. therefore we don't live forever.

  135. We have we we have a limited lifespan.

  136. We have health problems

  137. and all of that is involved here. And

  138. that's what David was saying. In sin did

  139. my mother conceive me. He wasn't

  140. criticizing his mother. He was

  141. describing a theological fact.

  142. So anyway, this man is born. He's lame

  143. from birth. Kind of like the man who was

  144. blind from birth in John nine. Remember

  145. him?

  146. >> [clears throat]

  147. >> And so we these miracles these physical

  148. miracles in the physical realm are

  149. illustrative of what Jesus can do for us

  150. in the physical realm but also in the

  151. spiritual realm which is what's harder

  152. to heal somebody physically or to raise

  153. them from the dead spiritually. I'll

  154. tell you which one it is. The hardest

  155. resurrection is not a physical

  156. resurrection. It's a spiritual one. And

  157. if you're born again, you you've already

  158. been resurrected in your soul. God gave

  159. you eternal life, your old dead soul.

  160. You have the you've been born again. You

  161. were dead in trespasses and sins.

  162. And so the Lord is fully able to take

  163. care of the big problems, the little

  164. problems, the in between problems, and

  165. the problems all all kinds of issues

  166. that people have. So this this poor man,

  167. we don't even know his name. A certain

  168. man lame from his birth. Lame from his

  169. birth

  170. was carried whom they laid daily at the

  171. gate of the temple which is called

  172. beautiful to ask alms of them that

  173. entered into the temple. Never worked a

  174. day in his life. Never walked a day in

  175. his life.

  176. He was totally dependent on others to

  177. get wherever he needed to go.

  178. who seeing Peter and John about to go

  179. into the temple asked an arms. Now he is

  180. quite good at that because he'd done it

  181. his whole life.

  182. Now this man was over 40.

  183. We'll tell us that later. He was over 40

  184. years old. So he'd been doing this for a

  185. while. That was his life. Every day sit

  186. and beg.

  187. Think of all the things that you've been

  188. able to do because your legs works.

  189. Think of all the places you've been able

  190. to go. Think of all the physical work

  191. you've been able to do just because you

  192. can walk.

  193. That was something that he'd never

  194. experienced ever.

  195. And so he had a congenital problem.

  196. And so seeing Peter and John about to go

  197. into the temple, asked an arms.

  198. Ask an arms. He asked for handout.

  199. And Peter fastening his eyes upon him

  200. with John. They're just the two of them

  201. there.

  202. Said, "Look on us."

  203. And he give he gave heed to them

  204. expecting to receive something from

  205. them.

  206. So they didn't just walk by and didn't

  207. pay attention to him or act like he

  208. wasn't there. They responded to him.

  209. They said, "Look on us." So he's looking

  210. at them.

  211. And Peter and John had a reputation,

  212. especially Peter.

  213. Month and a half before this, he

  214. preached in the temple on the day of

  215. Pentecost and 2,000 people got saved.

  216. And so, uh, I don't know if this man

  217. recognized them or not. I'm sure he'd

  218. heard of them.

  219. He'd been doing there every day.

  220. Every day at the gates of the temple.

  221. I'm sure he'd heard about Jesus even.

  222. I mean, what else will people be talking

  223. about after the day of Pentecost and the

  224. amazing miracle of the Holy Spirit and

  225. speaking in languages you'd never

  226. learned and 2,000 people getting saved,

  227. talking about the resurrection of Jesus,

  228. there is no question in my mind that

  229. this wasn't the first time this man

  230. heard about Jesus or the apostles.

  231. So it says in verse four, Peter fastened

  232. his eyes upon him with John and said,

  233. 'Look on us, and he gave heed to them,

  234. expecting to receive something from

  235. them. And Peter said, Silver and gold

  236. have I none.

  237. Now, usually that ends it. Have you ever

  238. had somebody ask for money, beg for

  239. money, and sorry, I'm busted. I don't

  240. have anything. And sometimes that's

  241. true. I have got nothing. I can't give

  242. them anything.

  243. Silver and gold have I none, but such as

  244. I have, I give to thee. In the name of

  245. Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and

  246. walk. Well, that was a surprise.

  247. I I was visiting my son. He was in a

  248. military base in Atlanta in the service.

  249. And um I flew in and I rented a car and

  250. and trying to go to uh wherever he

  251. wherever he was there. It's been a while

  252. ago, not that long ago.

  253. And a big strong African guy came up and

  254. asked me for five bucks.

  255. Well, I decided I'm going to give you

  256. five bucks. [laughter]

  257. Right away when I looked at him, I

  258. thought, I don't know what his I don't

  259. know what his motives are. I'm I'm over

  260. 70. I don't think I want to get in a

  261. tangle with this guy. So, I'm gonna

  262. cough up my bucks. But normally, I don't

  263. do that. I was busy and I had to get to

  264. where I was going. Normally, I say,

  265. "Look, I I'm not going to give you any

  266. money because, you know, a lot of people

  267. want to just spend it on dope and stuff

  268. like that. Well, I'll buy you lunch and

  269. I'll sit down and talk to you. That's

  270. usually what I do.

  271. And then

  272. if now if they're want drug money, they

  273. don't even want to eat. They want beer

  274. money. They just want money for drugs.

  275. At least I get to give him the gospel.

  276. Sit down, talk with him, give him the

  277. gospel.

  278. Well, I was in a hurry, so I wasn't able

  279. to do that, but I did give the guy the

  280. gospel and I gave him a track. That's

  281. all I could do.

  282. And um

  283. but you know obviously this was a shock

  284. to this man when Peter said what he

  285. said.

  286. Beggars are used to being told no.

  287. Beggars are used to being ignored.

  288. But

  289. Peter said look on us. And then he said,

  290. "Silver and gold have I none, but such

  291. as I have, give I thee. In the name of

  292. Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and

  293. walk

  294. there. I've told this story before. I've

  295. read it in church history. There was one

  296. of the Catholic popes. I don't remember

  297. which one. Don't even remember what year

  298. it was in. But he was bragging about all

  299. the gold and silver he's got. And he

  300. said, "Peter," he said to somebody,

  301. "Peter, uh, we don't have to say with

  302. Peter anymore. Silver and gold have I

  303. none." And the fellow he said, "Yeah,

  304. that's true. But neither can we say rise

  305. up and walk?"

  306. And what would you rather have? the

  307. ability to give money away or the

  308. ability to minister to people with a

  309. lifechanging

  310. message

  311. and a lifechanging

  312. work of God in their life.

  313. Peter had what this man needed. You have

  314. what people need.

  315. And so it says, "In the name of Jesus,

  316. rise up and walk." And he didn't. Peter

  317. didn't even wait. He took him by the

  318. right hand and lifted him up.

  319. And he'd never stood up before.

  320. He took him by the right hand and lifted

  321. him up. Immediately his feet and ankle

  322. bones receive strength.

  323. >> [clears throat]

  324. >> This is an amazing miracle by the risen

  325. Lord. And Peter gave Jesus all the

  326. credit. In the name of Jesus Christ,

  327. rise up and walk. Don't look at me.

  328. Don't get excited about me. In the name

  329. of Jesus, rise up and walk.

  330. I don't have any silver. I have any

  331. gold. I got something better.

  332. So, it's a marvelous [clears throat]

  333. thing. And then in verse eight, and he

  334. leaping up, stood and walked. I would

  335. have loved to have seen that. Can you

  336. He's standing first time in his life.

  337. He's walking in the first time in his

  338. life. And he's walking perfectly.

  339. He's There's nothing wobbly. He doesn't

  340. need uh uh therapy. [laughter]

  341. His bis muscles are all tuned up all of

  342. a sudden after 40 years of never

  343. walking.

  344. So he he leaped up, stood and walked,

  345. entered with them into the temple,

  346. walking and leaping and praising God. He

  347. wasn't just walking. He's leaping and

  348. he's trying out those legs. It's a

  349. beautiful picture

  350. of an individual. How many people in

  351. heaven have been Christians, but they've

  352. got a physical affliction?

  353. They crippled them either from birth or

  354. from an accident.

  355. and they think, "Oh, if I could just

  356. stand up again. Oh, if I could just do

  357. this again."

  358. Don't you think the streets of gold are

  359. going to be interesting?

  360. I like to talk at nursing home when I we

  361. preach in Hickory Creek every day and

  362. Bob preaches in times, not every day,

  363. every week. And he preaches there. But I

  364. love to tell people in the nursing home,

  365. won't it be fun when we can get in the

  366. streets of gold in the new Jerusalem and

  367. we can you we will not have any

  368. wheelchairs in heaven.

  369. We're leaving those behind.

  370. It's good to say things like that to

  371. people that need to hear it.

  372. And not everybody's healed in this life,

  373. but if you're saved, you're going to be

  374. healed in the next. You're going to be

  375. better than your best.

  376. So of course this miracle was extremely

  377. public

  378. and they they it's right outside the

  379. temple and then they walk into the

  380. temple and all the people saw him

  381. walking and praising God and they knew

  382. they knew that it was he who sat for

  383. arms at the beautiful gate of the temple

  384. and they're filled with wonder and

  385. amazement at that which had happened to

  386. him.

  387. This guy was well known. 40 years pagan

  388. at the temple. Now just think about

  389. this. This is right after Jesus arose

  390. from the dead. Jesus was 33 when he died

  391. and rose again. This man had been

  392. begging before Jesus was born.

  393. Think about that.

  394. And how he and Jesus never connected.

  395. Who knows? Because Jesus went to the

  396. temple many times. But for whatever

  397. reason, you know, if you've been to

  398. Jerusalem, you know there's many ways to

  399. get in and out of there. And for

  400. whatever reason, he missed the Lord

  401. Jesus.

  402. And God had a reason.

  403. And if God doesn't answer your prayers

  404. now, and if God lets you to go through

  405. something longer than you ever want to

  406. go through it,

  407. there's a reason for his glory and your

  408. good.

  409. So this man missed Jesus. Never met

  410. probably met him because if you met him

  411. he'd have healed him.

  412. So

  413. if you're not a Christian and you've

  414. never known the Lord, you say, "Well,

  415. other people got to know him early, but

  416. I don't know him. It's too late for me."

  417. God saves old sinners.

  418. He doesn't just save young sinners and

  419. teenage sinners and 20year-old sinners.

  420. He say he's old sinners. Ask Nicodemus.

  421. How can a man be born again when he's

  422. old? Can he go back in his mother and be

  423. born? No, no, no.

  424. But you can be born again. Don't need

  425. another physical birth, but you need a

  426. spiritual one.

  427. So anyway, this is a fascinating section

  428. of scripture,

  429. and it concludes with Peter's sermon in

  430. verse 12.

  431. And then Peter preaches the gospel.

  432. So you know healing ministries are good

  433. and healing and helping people is good.

  434. But we got something we know they're

  435. they have more needs than physical needs

  436. or financial needs or other kind of

  437. needs. They have spiritual needs. Their

  438. social needs. Social needs are big. Uh

  439. physical needs are big. Financial needs

  440. are big. But we know above all those and

  441. beyond all those is experience the Lord

  442. Jesus because there is nothing more

  443. important in your life or mine than to

  444. know him and have him work in our life.

  445. Even if you're a job sitting on the ash

  446. heap alone,

  447. God's got purposes for that. You'll be

  448. delivered in God's time.

  449. So anyway, this is a particular miracle

  450. in the book of acts. It's a par power

  451. marvelous thing. It's a marvelous thing.

  452. And uh you know what happened?

  453. It's kind of fascinating what is said

  454. here.

  455. Uh the church grew mightily. 2,000 got

  456. saved at Pentecost. Excuse me. 3,000 got

  457. saved at Pentecost. Peter preached that

  458. sermon. 5,000 plus got saved here.

  459. One sermon.

  460. It says to men that that mean that's

  461. that's not saying there were no women

  462. there or children. That's that's a way

  463. of saying it. There was 5,000 men 5,000

  464. [clears throat] plus their family.

  465. The 2,000 at Pentecost, same thing. So

  466. you know what's happened in this by this

  467. miracle? The biggest religious group in

  468. Israel, excuse me, in Jerusalem is now

  469. the church.

  470. There were um

  471. there was maybe I'm forgetting the

  472. figure. I've forgotten it. There might

  473. have been a couple of thousand

  474. Pharisees, maybe that many. But the the

  475. Sadducees were a very smaller group.

  476. There were just a couple hundred of

  477. those. and the uh Herodians there

  478. there's probably a little bigger the

  479. biggest group in Jerusalem the city of

  480. Jerusalem a city of normally 50,000

  481. people at that time growing during the

  482. feast days but and then back down to 50

  483. was the church of Jesus Christ at this

  484. moment

  485. you think that didn't get attention

  486. this was a major

  487. major invasion

  488. of Satan's territory

  489. by the Holy Spirit and the Lord Jesus

  490. Christ.

  491. Now, I've been preaching for 55 years.

  492. I've never preached to this many people.

  493. Never.

  494. And I've had times when I preached a few

  495. hundred, but my biggest was in Africa. I

  496. had 1,200 high school kids getting ready

  497. to go into school. And I got to preach

  498. the gospel to them for 15 minutes.

  499. That's the biggest crowd this old guy's

  500. ever preached to preach preached to.

  501. Whatever happened here was a big deal.

  502. And the it was a very big deal. It got

  503. the attention of the authorities.

  504. They didn't like this.

  505. What are you doing coming in our temple

  506. doing this stuff? This is we run it in.

  507. Satan doesn't like Athens Bible Church

  508. poking around in Athens.

  509. or any church in any city

  510. or neighborhood.

  511. And so this is what's going on now.

  512. Uh so may the Lord help us to get what

  513. we need to get here.

  514. Now it's impossible really to imagine a

  515. better start for the church. I mean

  516. here's the city that murdered Jesus and

  517. he told them, "I want you to start at

  518. Jerusalem. Don't go somewhere else and

  519. start start at the place that killed me.

  520. Start in Jerusalem.

  521. And that's what they did. If God wants

  522. you someplace, that's where you need to

  523. be, right?

  524. So if he makes that clear, that's where

  525. you need to be. And that's what they

  526. did.

  527. And but my ministry, your ministry, the

  528. ministry of every church, uh is not

  529. something that's done by ourselves. We

  530. have the Lord with us. Though I'm with

  531. you always, even to the end of the age.

  532. And this is an important point. The

  533. ministry of one leads to ministry to

  534. others.

  535. I cannot tell you in all the years I've

  536. been ministering in Athens on the

  537. campus, sometimes we've had Bible

  538. classes or 40 or 50 kids, university

  539. students. Sometimes it's been down

  540. to a few.

  541. And some of those Bible classes went

  542. down to two.

  543. I had a Bible class down to two at Baker

  544. Center. one gal and one guy that she

  545. brought.

  546. The guy was a Jew and he got saved

  547. because his rabbis couldn't answer

  548. [clears throat] his questions, but I

  549. could.

  550. The gal got saved and went wonder went

  551. on for the Lord wonderfully.

  552. And so we still have contact still get

  553. Christmas cards from her. She was she uh

  554. gave me an ear test. She used it hot

  555. aiology.

  556. She said, "Pastor, you need a hearing

  557. aid." Well, she told me that 20 years

  558. ago.

  559. So, but anyway, um I thank God for hit

  560. that class and that was very productive.

  561. Never get discouraged because you don't

  562. have a lot of people coming.

  563. Nothing with the Lord whether with many

  564. or with few. It's a Bible principle.

  565. You don't know when you're doing big

  566. things.

  567. Neither do I.

  568. Lord, I don't know.

  569. So anyway, this this was a tremendous

  570. event, a very powerful event. And

  571. ministry to one often leads to the

  572. ministry of others. So the ministry to

  573. that one man led to the salvation of

  574. millions of people.

  575. Um

  576. every effect must have a cause.

  577. God of often works to one so he can

  578. reach others. How about the lady at the

  579. well of Samaria? Jesus reached one. But

  580. what did what happened then?

  581. He went into the city and brought

  582. everybody out. The apostles went in. All

  583. they got was groceries.

  584. She went in and brought out everybody in

  585. town.

  586. Jesus minister to one, but the one

  587. brought many.

  588. So you never know who that one is that

  589. God's going to use beyond and above

  590. anything you've imagined. So help us to

  591. never never think that

  592. this Bible class is too small, this

  593. ministry is too small. I you never know

  594. what's God's working or not. Sometimes

  595. the small classes are better than the

  596. bigger ones.

  597. So that's that's the first point and I

  598. think it's a good point.

  599. Uh now a second point and a very

  600. important point is the great works of

  601. God through the Lord Jesus Christ

  602. are

  603. preceded by prayer.

  604. If you want a God work, you want God to

  605. work, you got to be praying. Where were

  606. Peter and John going? To prayer,

  607. right?

  608. That's and you look in the book of Acts

  609. often they're going to prayer before

  610. something big happens or they're already

  611. praying. Peter was in the upper room

  612. when that sheet came down and a vision

  613. from God. Rise Peter, kill and eat. He

  614. was he went up there to pray and then he

  615. got the vision to reach out to the

  616. Gentiles. He didn't want to do it. But

  617. the Lord told him to do something he

  618. didn't want to do. Rise Peter, kill and

  619. eat. No, I've never had Italian.

  620. No. Rise, Peter. Kill and eat. I don't

  621. eat. That's Gentile food.

  622. And And then Peter had to say, "The

  623. Lord's taught me not to call anybody

  624. unclean."

  625. So, he had one focus and God was

  626. broadening him.

  627. Some people say, "Your church is so

  628. conservative. You're so conservative.

  629. You You're so narrow. You could see with

  630. a key to a keyhole with both eyes.

  631. Well,

  632. listen.

  633. If it's conservative in a right way in

  634. that we take the word of God seriously

  635. and we take the work of God seriously,

  636. that's a good kind of conservatism. I'm

  637. not talking about politics now. I'm

  638. talking about conservative Christianity,

  639. which is really the only Christianity

  640. there is.

  641. Liberal Christianity is not

  642. Christianity.

  643. James Misham Grac Machan at Princeton

  644. wrote a whole book on that. The

  645. liberalism is not Christianity. It's not

  646. a legitimate variation of the real

  647. thing. It's a false thing. That's a

  648. great book, by the way. Quite dated. He

  649. wrote it in the 30s.

  650. But the great works of God for Jesus

  651. Christ are preceded not just by

  652. preaching, but by prayer. Prayer first,

  653. then ministry.

  654. By the way, that's what was going on at

  655. Pentecost. They were all 120 of them in

  656. one place. What were they doing?

  657. Praying.

  658. And so all these things the book of Acts

  659. is teaching you a pattern here uh that

  660. is important forever. It's also

  661. important to engage people

  662. in need. May God help us to engage

  663. people in need. there's all kinds and we

  664. we we

  665. trust that God has a purpose for that

  666. need in their life and then maybe we can

  667. utilize that as a ministry and that's

  668. what Peter did.

  669. Another point is very important. We

  670. point people to Jesus Christ not

  671. ourselves.

  672. We point people to Jesus Christ, not our

  673. church.

  674. We're not here to preach Athens Bible

  675. Church or any other church. We're not

  676. here to promote ourselves. We want to

  677. invite people to our church. And but

  678. that's we don't focus on

  679. all the great things we have as a

  680. church. We talk to people about Jesus,

  681. right? That's what they did. They

  682. preached to him Jesus. That's what they

  683. did and that's what caused the results

  684. that needed to happen.

  685. And they said in the name of Jesus

  686. Christ of Nazareth, rise up. And then

  687. all the people came to death together.

  688. And the man in verse 11 is hanging on to

  689. Peter and John. And he's just loving on

  690. them. And all the people ran together to

  691. the porch called Solomon greatly

  692. wondering. And when Peter saw it, what

  693. did he do do? He promoted the risen

  694. savior. He did just what he needed to

  695. do. Don't let people get you off

  696. subject.

  697. You try to witness to somebody. You try

  698. to talk to them about Jesus and they

  699. want to talk about anything and

  700. everything except that. Have you ever

  701. noticed that?

  702. I don't believe the Bible calls. I don't

  703. believe a fish could swallow a man. I

  704. don't believe the Bible calls. I believe

  705. in evolution. I don't believe the Bible

  706. bl other and a lot of roads. And the way

  707. to answer that is to do this. That's a

  708. good question. I'd be very glad to

  709. answer that.

  710. But first things first, we need to look

  711. about Jesus. This is first. This is the

  712. most important. Once this question is

  713. answered, we can go to other questions.

  714. They'll divert you. They want the

  715. conversation to go, "Oh, the Bible's got

  716. mistakes in it." Or any number of

  717. things.

  718. Peter did just what he needed to do.

  719. He did just what he needed to do. Watch

  720. it. Verse 12.

  721. When Peter saw it, he answered the

  722. people, "Uh, you men of Israel, why

  723. marvel you at this? Or why you look you

  724. so earnestly on us as though we by our

  725. own power of holiness we made this man

  726. walk?" Stop looking at us. Stop getting

  727. excited about us. Don't get focused on

  728. us. The God of Abraham and Isaac and

  729. Jacob, the God of our fathers, has

  730. glorified his son Jesus, whom you

  731. delivered up and denied in the presence

  732. of Pilate, when he was determined to let

  733. him go. You've denied the Holy One and

  734. the just, and desired a murder to be

  735. granted to you, and killed the prince of

  736. life, whom God has raised from the dead,

  737. of which were witnesses.

  738. And so, basically, Peter's saying, "You

  739. think this guy had a problem? How about

  740. your problem?

  741. You just killed your Messiah.

  742. Your problem's bigger than his.

  743. But then he shows them the God who dealt

  744. with his problem can deal with your

  745. problem.

  746. Don't you put limits on God. That person

  747. will never get saved.

  748. God loves to surprise you.

  749. Not many wise, not many mighty are

  750. called, God called the foolish things of

  751. the world to confound the wise. He loves

  752. to take that person that you think is

  753. the hardest person, the most difficult

  754. person, the person beyond hope that

  755. you've given up hope on

  756. and do a work in their life.

  757. My brother-in-law Jim Lusher is going to

  758. preach in this church very soon.

  759. >> [clears throat]

  760. >> Um he's he was a pastor and he went to

  761. seminary after I did, although he's

  762. older than me. But there were several

  763. brothers in his family. His dad was a

  764. pastor of a Baptist church I grew up in

  765. and got saved in. His dad said to me, "I

  766. couldn't do anything with Jim."

  767. The other brothers were straight arrows.

  768. Jim wasn't.

  769. is that I can't do anything. Here's a

  770. man who had a church of several hundred

  771. people, wonderful pre pastor, wonderful

  772. preacher. I couldn't do anything.

  773. Have you ever felt helpless?

  774. I can't do anything with my family

  775. member. I can't do anything with this

  776. loved one. They're not listening to me.

  777. They're not. Of course, you can't.

  778. Peter couldn't raised Peter couldn't

  779. make this man walk. Why are you looking

  780. at us as if we made this guy?

  781. Jesus did it.

  782. And so God will often take the hard

  783. case. Now, that's no excuse for being a

  784. hard case. You know,

  785. I I that's no excuse for being a hard

  786. case, but God will often take the person

  787. you think least likely to be interested

  788. in spiritual things.

  789. And and that's and that's what happened

  790. here with this man.

  791. Nobody thought this man would ever walk.

  792. Nobody. I don't think anybody was

  793. praying for him to walk. It was a

  794. congenital birth defect.

  795. Just something you have to live with and

  796. die with.

  797. But the Lord, the creator who became our

  798. redeemer did it.

  799. So may God help us if but if you want to

  800. talk to men about God, you got to talk

  801. to God about men. That's a basic

  802. principle, right? You got to be going to

  803. prayer like Peter and John were. You got

  804. to be engaged. And there are people who

  805. will never let you talk with them. I've

  806. I've had them. You've had them. They

  807. don't want to hear it. They shut you

  808. down. First sentence out of your mouth.

  809. I don't want to hear that.

  810. They can stop you from talking to them

  811. about God. You know what they can't do?

  812. They can't stop you from talking to God

  813. about them.

  814. So may God give us wisdom in that.

  815. And really talking to God about them is

  816. more important than talking to them

  817. about God because God's got to open

  818. their heart and make them willing.

  819. And so Peter knew where the power was.

  820. He knew where what had to happen. And he

  821. began to preach to them Jesus. And he

  822. was very confrontational.

  823. He says in verse 15, you killed the

  824. prince of life whom God raised from the

  825. dead. God raised him. You killed him.

  826. God raised him. And we're we're

  827. witnesses.

  828. Verse 16. And his name through faith in

  829. his name has made this man strong whom

  830. you see and know. Yay, the faith which

  831. is by him has given this him perfect

  832. soundness in the presence of you all.

  833. I don't know about you, but if I killed

  834. somebody, if I murdered somebody and

  835. then I found out they were they were

  836. doing miracles,

  837. that would be a little intimidating.

  838. I killed them, God raised them, and

  839. they're out there doing stuff. Uh,

  840. what's going to happen to me?

  841. So, he says in verse 17, "Now, brethren,

  842. I know through ignorance you did it, as

  843. did your rulers."

  844. Ignorance. Ignorance. This people were

  845. people of the book, supposed to know the

  846. Bible, supposed to be people that knew

  847. what other people didn't know.

  848. Ignorance.

  849. Because if you don't have the Holy

  850. Spirit working in your mind and heart,

  851. you're going to be ignorant. You're not

  852. going to see it.

  853. The Bible is clear, but our minds

  854. aren't.

  855. God's thoughts aren't our thoughts.

  856. God's ways aren't our ways. That's what

  857. Isaiah says. And we we need the Holy

  858. Spirit of God to work in our open our

  859. understanding, open our heart as the

  860. Lord opens Lydia's heart in Acts 16 that

  861. she could attend to the things spoken by

  862. Paul. She wasn't a pagan. She was a

  863. woman that was trying to worship the

  864. true God. She was going to Bible study.

  865. She was having prayer with other women

  866. like her, Jewish women.

  867. She was a wealthy woman. She was a

  868. successful woman. She she'd succeeded in

  869. the world. Who knows what happened to

  870. her husband?

  871. But she had she

  872. couldn't understand the gospel until God

  873. opened her heart.

  874. Why?

  875. Because her heart was closed.

  876. And so Peter's just telling them what's

  877. going on.

  878. And he says in 17, I know through

  879. ignorance you did it as did your rulers,

  880. but those things which God has shown by

  881. the mouth of all his prophets that

  882. Christ should suffer, he has so

  883. fulfilled. Read your own Bibles. Go back

  884. and read them again, and you'll

  885. understand that the Messiah is going to

  886. die. And he just did, and he rose again.

  887. Now, here comes the invitation. Repent

  888. therefore and be converted and that your

  889. sins may be blotted out when the times

  890. of refreshing shall come from the

  891. presence of the Lord.

  892. There's a call to decision. What is

  893. repentance? What is it? Feel bad.

  894. No,

  895. you can feel bad and still not repent.

  896. Repentance refer it's metanino. It means

  897. a change of mind.

  898. Now that change of mind may bring about

  899. a change of feeling,

  900. but the essence of repentance is a

  901. change of mind that causes a change of

  902. feeling and a change of direction.

  903. And it at its very heart, it's a change

  904. of mind. What's the change of mind? I

  905. don't need this. This isn't for me. I'm

  906. not interested.

  907. A change of mind.

  908. Repentance isn't just for

  909. uh getting drunk or doing drugs or

  910. running over a dog with your in with

  911. your car because you're going too fast.

  912. Repentance is all those things, but it's

  913. much more. It's a change of mind about

  914. yourself and about God. It's a change of

  915. mind that brings about a change in

  916. direction.

  917. It's a change of mind that brings about

  918. a change in thinking.

  919. And it's always followed by saving

  920. faith. Repent and believe the gospel.

  921. Now, the main word for getting saved is

  922. believe. If you just do a mathematical

  923. study, the main word for getting saved

  924. is the word believe.

  925. It's used much more than repent.

  926. So, we should focus on that word. But

  927. they they go together. They're two sides

  928. of the same coin.

  929. If you if you're if you repent

  930. biblically, you're believing. If you

  931. believe, you're repenting. They're not

  932. separated. Repentance is always spoken

  933. of first,

  934. but it goes together with faith.

  935. It's not two stages. Well, now I've

  936. repented. Now I can believe. It just

  937. goes together.

  938. So that's the picture. So he says in

  939. verse 19, repent therefore and be

  940. converted that your sins may be blotted

  941. out when the times of refreshing shall

  942. come from the presence of the Lord. And

  943. he will send Jesus Christ who before was

  944. preached to you. That's the return of

  945. Jesus Christ promised to the Jews who

  946. killed him

  947. when whom the heaven must receive to the

  948. time of restitution of all things which

  949. God has spoken by the mouth of all his

  950. holy prophets since the age began.

  951. And Moses truly said to the fathers, "A

  952. prophet shall the Lord raise up like

  953. unto me of your brethren like unto me

  954. him shall you hear in all things

  955. whatever you'll he shall say to you."

  956. That's a prophecy of Messiah and that's

  957. in the book of Deuteronomy. And it'll

  958. come to pass that every soul who will

  959. not hear that prophet shall be destroyed

  960. from among the people. And all the

  961. prophets from Samuel and those who that

  962. follow as many have spoken have likewise

  963. foretold these things. So what's he

  964. doing? Your Bible's about Jesus. The

  965. Bible you say you believe, the Bible you

  966. say you read, it's all about him.

  967. And you're sons of the prophets and of

  968. the covenant which God made with our

  969. father, saying to Abraham, "In your

  970. seed, shall all kindreds of the earth be

  971. blessed. Unto you first, God having

  972. raised up his son Jesus sent him to

  973. bless you and turning away every one of

  974. you from his iniquities."

  975. Point, this is a very important point.

  976. Point to Jesus, not yourself. Point to

  977. Jesus, not anything else in the Bible.

  978. That's where the power is. That's what

  979. the unsaved need.

  980. They Yes, they have questions that need

  981. answered. I'm not saying that. But as

  982. soon as you can get it to get it to the

  983. Lord because that's what counts. You can

  984. answer a 100 questions and they're still

  985. lost.

  986. So why is this particular miracle in

  987. this particular place?

  988. It's a special illustration number one

  989. of the multitude of miracles that the

  990. apostles had done and were doing uh

  991. through the risen Christ.

  992. And why this particular miracle instead

  993. of one of the others because God works

  994. in individuals not just in crowds.

  995. And this particular miracle set up a

  996. conf confrontation with Jewish

  997. leadership. It not only caused thousands

  998. of others to get saved. When Peter and

  999. John are brought before the Sanhedrin,

1000. this man went with him.

1001. And if I time if I had time, I'd talk to

  1002. you about that.

1003. They didn't like it. They hated it.

1004. They did everything to persecute Peter

  1005. and John.

1006. They called him out. They tried to

1007. intimidate him. And you know, we

1008. Christians, we have no reason to be

1009. intimidated by anybody when it comes to

1010. the gospel. We should be bold.

1011. We should be in your face in a loving

1012. way. I don't mean in a proud way or

1013. contentious way, but we should not let

1014. the hatred of the world for Jesus

1015. intimidate us. We got the truth that

  1016. they need.

1017. And when Peter and John were called on

1018. the carpet by the Sanhedrin,

1019. the Sanhedrin could say nothing against

1020. it. Why? Because that man was healed was

1021. standing right there with him.

1022. Now, there's a role for the church of

  1023. Jesus Christ.

1024. You may never be a preacher. You may

1025. never be a big personal worker,

1026. but you can stand with those that are.

1027. We can stand with the missionaries.

1028. We can stand with those who proclaiming

  1029. the gospel

1030. even if we're not. Who's good at

  1031. witnessing? I don't know anybody's good

1032. at it. Some people are better than

  1033. others. I know that.

  1034. They're just that's their natural gift.

1035. But uh uh you know even if you don't do

1036. it well, you need to do it.

1037. But the important thing is that uh we

1038. can stand with those that are standing

1039. up for the Lord. Maybe they're the ones

1040. doing the talking, but our life is

1041. standing there with them. That's where

1042. the local church comes in.

1043. The proof of the resurrection is the

1044. existence of the church of Jesus Christ

  1045. on the earth.

1046. I'm not talking about the false church.

  1047. That's the devil's church. I'm talking

1048. about the genuine church where real

1049. Christianity is, not fake Christian,

  1050. false Christian.

1051. So, I hope that this is a challenge to

1052. you to uh serve the Lord as you see fit

1053. and be about God's business as he gives

1054. you business to do. And it's fascinating

  1055. in Isaiah 35

1056. it when it talks about the Messiah and

1057. the messianic kingdom, it says, "The

1058. blind will see, the deaf will hear, and

1059. the crippled will walk, and the mute

  1060. will shout.

  1061. specific prophetic illustrations in

1062. their Bible of messianic blessings that

1063. will prevail under the future messianic

1064. king. And they got a taste of it through

1065. Peter and John and this unnamed person.

1066. The church has got to have a man. The

1067. church has got to have people with saved

  1068. different lives.

1069. You got that. You can you can that

1070. argues better than any word you can say.

1071. They can they they don't like your

1072. arguments. They don't like your sermons.

1073. But they can't fight the fact

  1074. that you're different than them. You're

1075. different not just from them. You're

1076. different from what you were.

1077. And they see it. You ever heard people

1078. say, "Your wife's speaking so loud I

  1079. can't hear what you're saying. Our

1080. life should back up our lips. That

1081. doesn't mean we're going to be sinless

1082. or perfect. God doesn't promise that.

1083. This side of glory, but it does mean we

  1084. should be different.

1085. I'm not what I ought to be. I'm not what

1086. I but I'm not what I used to be either.

1087. And so, thank God for that. Well, maybe

1088. there's someone here listening to me

1089. online or or or even here here. You're

1090. not saved yet. You know, you're not.

1091. Maybe you've been discouraged from

1092. churches or this church. Maybe a church

1093. has hurt you or uh or something in life

1094. has been just devastating to you.

1095. Those needs God knows all about,

1096. but he also knows there's something more

1097. you need than have that need met. You

1098. need to know the Lord if you don't know

  1099. the Lord.

1100. And I'm reminded by Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  1101. there are no

1102. in there are no impenetrable places.

  1103. Start in Jerusalem.

1104. And there are no unimportant people.

  1105. Think about this man.

1106. You've never met an unimportant person.

1107. We're created in the image of God.

1108. We're all going to spend eternity

  1109. someplace.

1110. This man was the lowest that you could

1111. be on the Jewish social ladder.

1112. He'd been a beggar his whole life. He

1113. had a role to play.

  1114. It wasn't a verbal role.

1115. It was a visual role.

1116. Everybody in that Sanhedrin, all 70 of

1117. them had known that man.

1118. They'd walked by him. They may have

  1119. given him money.

  1120. 40 years of it.

  1121. And now he's standing

  1122. with Peter and John.

1123. When they saw him, they could say

  1124. nothing against it.

1125. They could say nothing against it.

1126. Doesn't mean they got saved. It just

  1127. means they were

  1128. they found it impossible

  1129. to argue.

1130. Very interesting. Well, it's this is in

1131. the book of Acts for a reason. And the

1132. book of Acts is the acts of the risen

1133. savior through his people. And uh uh we

1134. may not be able to do apostolic miracles

1135. like Peter and John, but we can be used

1136. to change people's lives. We can be used

1137. as instruments of the risen Savior to

1138. reach out to people nobody else has time

1139. for or interest in, but God does. And

1140. so, be in prayer for who does God want

1141. me to minister to this week.

1142. Father, we thank you for what we've

1143. looked at today, a challenging section

  1144. of scripture

  1145. um

1146. right in the beginning of the book of

1147. Acts for a reason. God wants us to have

1148. a pattern. Not that we're apostles or

1149. can do the miracles they did, but we are

1150. Christians and we have the same

1151. commission they have and that to preach

1152. the gospel to every creature.

1153. And Lord, help us whether we're in the

1154. hospital with somebody or in the nursing

1155. home with somebody or on the street with

  1156. somebody

1157. or in a neighborhood with somebody that

1158. needs to know the Lord. May we have open

1159. hearts, open doors when that's

  1160. necessary,

  1161. and open mouths

  1162. in Jesus name. Amen.

1163. >> Stand. Turn the page. [singing]

1164. As we go from this [music] place,

1165. loving [singing] you more, trusting you

  1166. more.

  1167. [music]

1168. May the power of your love [singing]

1169. and the light of your word [music] shine

1170. to a sin darkened world as we go from

  1171. [singing]

  1172. this
