  1. Good morning, everyone. How are you guys doing? Like Ed had mentioned, Sean and I, we had traveled

  2. down to Pennsylvania this weekend to attend our regional assembly of elders, and it was really

  3. such an encouraging time to meet up with other pastors in our region, to be encouraged by them,

  4. to hear how God is working in all the churches along Sovereign Grace in the Northeast. And so

  5. coming back really encouraged by that. Also really tired a little, but we'll make it through.

  6. It's my joy and pleasure to be able to bring God's word to us this morning. If you have your Bibles,

  7. if you would please turn to Ecclesiastes chapter 9, verse 13. If you don't have a Bible, please raise

    Ecclesiastes 9:13

  8. your hand, and one of our church members or ministry volunteers will be able to pass one over to you

  9. for you to keep as a gift. Our passage this morning, again, comes from Ecclesiastes chapter 9,

    Ecclesiastes 9:13

  10. verse 13, to all of chapter 10.

  11. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  12. Heavenly Father, we are truly thankful that you give us the opportunity to gather as the body of Christ

  13. every Sunday morning. Lord, we are so grateful for your word, scripture, which aids us in encouraging

  14. one another, in rebuking one another, in teaching and admonishing us, and filling us with hope of the

  15. gospel, Lord. We thank you so much for your son, Jesus, who died on the cross for our sins. And we

  16. thank you so much that you give us so much great wisdom through your word. Lord, we confess that we

  17. are people who succumb time and time again to the follies and foolishness of this world.

  18. We ask, Lord, that you fill us with wisdom that can only come from you, and help us to take hold

  19. of this wisdom that is Jesus, Lord, this morning and for evermore. We thank you so much, Lord. We love

  20. you, and we pray all this in Jesus' name. Amen. If you're willing and able, would you please stand

  21. for the reading of God's holy and authoritative word? Ecclesiastes chapter 9, verse 13 to chapter 10,

    Ecclesiastes 9:13

  22. verse 20.

  23. I have also seen this example of wisdom under the sun, and it seemed great to me. There was a little

  24. city with a few men in it, and a great king came against it and besieged it, building great siege

  25. works against it. But there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city.

  26. Yet no one remembered that poor man. But I say that wisdom is better than might, though the poor man's

  27. wisdom is despised and his words are not heard. The words of the wise, heard and quiet, are better

  28. than the shouting of a ruler among fools. Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys

  29. much good. Dead flies makes the perfumer's ointment give off a stench, so little folly outweighs

  30. wisdom and honor. A wise man's heart inclines him to the right, but a fool's heart to the left.

  31. Even when the fool walks on the road, he lacks sense, and he says to everyone that he is a fool.

  32. If the anger of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your place, for calmness will lay great

  33. offenses to rest. There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, as if as it were an error proceeding

  34. from the ruler. Folly is set in many high places, and the rich sit in the low place. I have seen slaves

  35. on horses and princes walking on the ground like slaves. He who digs a pit will fall into it, and a

  36. serpent will bite him who breaks through a wall. He who quarries stones is hurt by them, and he who

  37. splits logs is endangered by them. If the iron is blunt and one does not sharpen the edge, he must use

  38. more strength. But wisdom helps one to succeed. If the serpent bites before it is charmed, there is no

  39. advantage to the charmer. The words of a wise man's mouth win him favor, but the lips of a fool consume

  40. him. The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness, and the end of his talk is evil

  41. madness. A fool multiplies words, though no man knows what is to be, and who can tell him what will be

  42. after him. The toil of a fool wearies him, for he does not know the way to the city. Woe to you, O land,

  43. when your king is a child and your princes feast in the morning. Happy are you, O land, when your king

  44. is the son of nobility, and your princes feast at the proper time for strength and not for drunkenness.

  45. Through sloth the roof sinks in, and through indolence the house leaks. Bread is made for laughter,

  46. and wine gladdens life, and money answers everything. Even in your thoughts do not curse the king, nor in

  47. your bedroom curse the rich, for a bird of the air will carry your voice, or some winged creature

  48. tell the matter. This is God's holy and authoritative word. You may be seated.

  49. There are proverbs, wise sayings, and folk wisdoms that are used in our world, in our society,

  50. for very specific occasions and situations. What's interesting, however, is how many of these sayings

  51. tend to contradict each other when put next to one another? Let me give a few examples to this.

  52. There's the saying, the early bird gets the worm. It means that it's good to seize your opportunities

  53. as soon as you can. But then there's also the saying, haste makes waste, meaning a hurried life

  54. makes for more inefficiency. There's the saying, absence makes the heart grow fonder.

  55. You pine after the things and people missing from your life. But then there's also the saying,

  56. out of sight, out of mind. There's the saying, many hands make light work. The more help that you have,

  57. the easier the job will be. But then there's also the saying, too many cooks spoil the broth.

  58. The more help that you have, the worse the end result of the job will be.

  59. And there's another saying that says, when you pay attention to detail, the big picture will take

  60. care of itself. When you're focused on all the minute details that form the entire big idea,

  61. they say that eventually the big idea will form itself. But then there's also this Chinese proverb

  62. that says, when the wise man points to the moon, the fool stares at the finger. It's not good to be

  63. detail-oriented in this case, or else you'll lose sight of the main idea, the main point.

  64. Obviously, common sense will lead us to utilize different proverbs or different scenarios.

  65. And there's certainly a moderate middle ground in between some of these proverbs.

  66. It's good to seize opportunities as soon as you can, but it's also good to step back and consider

  67. whether that opportunity is worth the risk. Or there are instances where having a lot of help

  68. makes a job a lot easier, like setting up and tearing down our church equipment for Sunday service.

  69. Please join our support ministry. But there are also instances where too many

  70. opinions in a single project will result in strife, division, and a haphazardly completed job,

  71. like a class poster project. We've all had one of those, right?

  72. The point of sharing all of these conflicting proverbs is to show how fickle life and life

  73. circumstances can be. At some point in someone's life, their circumstance made them come up with this

  74. life wisdom that the early bird gets the worm. But the chances are that another person is like,

  75. oh, that sounds like a good wisdom, and tries to apply it into their own life. And they realize

  76. instead that haste makes waste. The irony of these folk proverbs and wise sayings to live by in this world

  77. is that they shed light all the more on how transient worldly wisdom can be. Because everything in this life

  78. is up to time and chance. It's futility, it's vanity, hevel, a striving after wind, breath,

  79. to rely fully on the wisdom of this world to sustain us, to grant us success, and to give meaning to our lives.

  80. Church, earthly wisdom is not going to save our souls.

  81. And so this is our main idea for our passage this morning. Knowing that the wisdom of this world is

  82. fleeting, trust in the God-given humble wisdom that is Jesus Christ. I'm going to touch on three points

  83. this morning. The value of wisdom, the fragility of wisdom, and Christ, our greater wisdom.

  84. First, the value of wisdom. Right before our passage in Ecclesiastes chapter 9, verse 11 and 12,

    Ecclesiastes 9:11

  85. the preacher observes the futility of life, and the futility of trying to take control of life.

  86. It's like trying to chase after wind or breath, hevel. Like fish that are caught in a fishing net,

  87. or birds that are caught in a snare, we humans, whether we're wise or we're foolish,

  88. will all succumb to time and chance. There is no set formula in this life. The fast will not always

  89. win the race. The strong won't always win the battle. The wise won't always bring bread to the table,

  90. nor will the intelligence always gain riches. Everything in this life is up to time and chance.

  91. And so it's a vanity for us to try to take control of life.

  92. In chapter 9, verse 13, our passage this morning, the preacher, he brings forth another example of the

  93. uncertain circumstances of life. With the story of a little city that was besieged by a great king.

  94. The invading king built powerful siege works, forts, catapults, all sorts of weapons that can destroy

  95. the walls of the city in order to capture this small city. But the king's plans are thwarted by

  96. the wisdom of a poor, wise man. The city was preserved thanks to the wisdom of this poor man.

  97. We'd expect this man to be commended and commemorated for saving the city,

  98. and yet the poor, wise man was forgotten. And he became irrelevant in his words and wisdom to others.

  99. Verse 15, yet no one remembered that poor man. He doesn't get the reward that we expect him to

  100. receive. And instead, his wisdom is despised and his words are not heard. Church, life circumstances can

  101. and will go against our expectations because everything is up to time and chance. There is no

  102. perfect formula to life. C'est la vie. That's just how it is.

  103. But this isn't to say that wisdom has no place in this life. That wisdom is pointless to pursue,

  104. that we should instead settle for a life of folly. The preacher, he makes the point to emphasize the

  105. value of wisdom, even amidst the vanity, the hevel of life.

  106. As a note, the wisdom that the preacher is referring to throughout this passage is earthly wisdom.

  107. This is the ability to make good decisions and judgments based on the knowledge that you have

  108. in order to be successful in life, in order to get through life. This differs from godly wisdom,

  109. which is focused on the moral characteristics of fearing the Lord and obeying his commands,

  110. in order to give God the maximal glory. Earthly wisdom and godly wisdom can coincide.

  111. Proverbs chapter 14, verse 29 says, whoever is slow to anger has great understanding.

    Proverbs 14:29

  112. This is godly wisdom, but it's also very practical wisdom in this world.

  113. If we're slow to anger, if we're able to slow down and ask more questions and not be instantly enraged

  114. at what people say or do to us, there's a lot more wisdom in doing that than immediately exploding on anyone.

  115. But the key difference between earthly wisdom and godly wisdom is our end goal.

  116. Is it to be more successful? Is it to be better in this life? Or is it to give God the glory and to live a life that is pleasing to him?

  117. And so the preacher in this passage is seeing the great value of exercising earthly wisdom

  118. as opposed to following after earthly folly and foolishness.

  119. The preacher continues in verse 16,

  120. Even though the speaker of wisdom will be forgotten,

  121. wisdom itself will prevail over might.

  122. When wise words are spoken to those who quietly listen and heed the words,

  123. it's far better than a mighty ruler who loudly and recklessly speaks into an echo chamber of fools.

  124. These fools who, like parrots, will only repeat back what he says,

  125. whether he's right or wrong.

  126. Though wisdom is presented in this scenario in a very humble circumstance,

  127. it has great impact and value over displays of strength and might.

  128. The preacher values the quiet humility of wisdom over the boisterous pride of might.

  129. Even in our context today,

  130. our world still relishes wisdom over might.

  131. We relish those stories of the underdog who uses their wits and their wisdom,

  132. their cleverness to overcome the odds against a larger or mightier foe.

  133. Let me give a modern, maybe not so modern,

  134. a kind of modern example of this.

  135. In the movie Star Wars Episode 5,

  136. The Empire Strikes Back.

  137. Wow, that is not modern.

  138. Star Wars Episode 5, The Empire Strikes Back.

  139. Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine, the Empire,

  140. they sent out these giant four-legged tanks of destruction called AT-ATs.

  141. And they called on these AT-ATs to attack and destroy the rebel base.

  142. And so to defend their base, Luke Skywalker and the rebel alliance,

  143. they flew out these ships about 20 times smaller than these AT-ATs.

  144. They literally looked like little ants compared to these giant tanks.

  145. And they used their wits to circle about the AT-ATs with cables

  146. in order to wrap the tank's legs and trip it.

  147. And so that it trips over, it falls over, and it explodes.

  148. The rebels' clever use of their humble vehicles

  149. was enough to triumph over the Empire's behemoths of destruction,

  150. the Empire's siege works.

  151. That's an example of earthly wisdom.

  152. Another example, in Judges chapter 7,

    Judges 7 chapter mention

  153. Gideon, he follows God's instructions

  154. and reduced his army of 32,000 to a mere 300 men.

  155. These 300 men, they snuck onto the enemy Midianite territory

  156. in the middle of the night,

  157. and they suddenly blew their trumpets and smashed their jars to alarm

  158. and confuse the Midianites.

  159. And the Midianites, they fled from their camp,

  160. abandoning their stations.

  161. Gideon and his humble band of 300 men

  162. defeated an army of 135,000

  163. because the Israelites trusted in God

  164. and the wisdom that he gave them.

  165. The wisdom of the Lord manifested in the humble 300-man army of Gideon

  166. prevailed over the massive might of the Midianites.

  167. And so the preacher says,

  168. Wisdom is better than might,

  169. even when the words of wisdom may be despised,

  170. not heard, or small.

  171. Jumping ahead to chapter 10,

  172. the preacher again emphasizes the value of wisdom

  173. with a series of examples.

  174. In verses 2 and 3,

  175. the preacher points out

  176. that while a wise man's heart inclines him to the right,

  177. a fool's heart will go to the left,

  178. where the right stands for righteousness

  179. and the left stands for wickedness.

  180. The fool's heart will veer him to the left

  181. over and over again

  182. to the point that when he walks on the road,

  183. his leftward inclination

  184. is going to be a clear indication to everyone

  185. that he is a fool.

  186. Whether he's verbally communicating that himself or not,

  187. whether he's proclaiming to everyone,

  188. I'm a fool or not,

  189. he doesn't even have to say that.

  190. The way he just keeps leaning over to the left,

  191. the path of destruction,

  192. will indicate to everyone else,

  193. oh, this guy is a fool.

  194. His very action speaks for himself.

  195. Jumping to chapter 10, verse 10,

  196. the preacher concludes that wisdom would teach a man

  197. to sharpen his iron blade

  198. in order to maximize efficiency

  199. in cutting or chopping things.

  200. We see that wisdom would teach a snake charmer

  201. to make sure that the snake is indeed charmed,

  202. else the serpent may bite the charmer.

  203. A snake charmer who forgets to charm his snake

  204. may want to wisely consider a career change.

  205. And finally, the preacher observes in verses 12 and 13

  206. that while the words of a wise man's mouth

  207. gain him favor,

  208. the lips of a fool lead to his own destruction.

  209. From start to end,

  210. the words of a fool's mouth are of nonsense

  211. and evil madness, wicked delusion,

  212. and he does nothing but spout out more foolishness

  213. out of his own ignorance.

  214. A fool multiplies words, verse 14,

  215. a fool multiplies words,

  216. though no man knows what is to be

  217. and who can tell him what will be after him.

  218. The fool continues to blabber and yap

  219. and perhaps even talks about the future,

  220. about his own grand schemes,

  221. his plans and aspirations.

  222. But here we have the preacher saying,

  223. no man knows what is to be

  224. and who can tell him what will be after him.

  225. No one knows what's going to happen in the future.

  226. And so we can't say with absolute certainty

  227. what is in store for us ahead.

  228. It would be considered foolish to do that.

  229. We have many church members at Trinity

  230. who have big dreams and goals for their future.

  231. Some aspire to become aerospace engineers.

  232. Others want to go work in the highest political sectors

  233. of the United States.

  234. We have aspiring dentists,

  235. nuclear physicists,

  236. PhD candidates,

  237. and many more who love to talk about

  238. what they're striving toward in the future.

  239. What sets many of our brothers and sisters apart

  240. from the fool in verse 14, however,

  241. is that they don't multiply their words.

  242. They don't double down and say with certainty,

  243. I know for sure,

  244. I swear,

  245. I will become that dentist.

  246. I will gain that position in this political sector.

  247. I will solve all of nuclear physics.

  248. Or may lightning strike me down.

  249. While those with wisdom

  250. will share their aspirations and their dreams,

  251. while remaining humble

  252. amidst the unknowability

  253. and uncertainty of life,

  254. the fool will speak as if he knows for sure

  255. the future outcome of his life.

  256. Church, we're really blessed

  257. with intelligent and talented folks in our church.

  258. And that's all the more reason

  259. we need to be humble

  260. in the face of the unknown of the future.

  261. It's wise to speak in humility

  262. even about our own hopes and dreams and goals.

  263. Proverbs chapter 21 verse 1 says,

    Proverbs 21:1

  264. Do not boast about tomorrow,

  265. for you do not know what a day may bring.

  266. No one knows what the future will bring,

  267. whether that's a year from now,

  268. whether that's a week from now,

  269. or even within the next 30 minutes.

  270. Our church, we're like unable to figure out

  271. what we're going to have for lunch after service.

  272. We don't know what's going to happen in the future.

  273. It would be wiser to speak,

  274. to not speak so surely about our future plans,

  275. knowing that we don't have absolute security

  276. and control of our future.

  277. Nevertheless, the fool speaks of things

  278. that he doesn't know about,

  279. the things that he doesn't even have security about.

  280. And as a result, he bumbles about,

  281. not even sure about how to get to his goal,

  282. to his destination,

  283. even to a city,

  284. which is supposed to be his destination

  285. that the preacher speaks of in verse 15.

  286. Wisdom has value.

  287. And the preacher shows that there's great merit

  288. to pursuing wisdom and being wise in this life.

  289. Wisdom helps to preserve us,

  290. keep us alive.

  291. Applying wisdom helps us to succeed

  292. in our work and our toil.

  293. Wisdom helps us not to boast

  294. and to speak instead out of thoughtfulness and humility.

  295. And wisdom helps to gain favor from those around us

  296. because they find what we say

  297. to be trustworthy and helpful.

  298. God gives us the common grace,

  299. the common grace gift of earthly wisdom in this life,

  300. knowing that it's a blessing

  301. that allows for humans to flourish in this world.

  302. Even today, this wisdom is of good value to our own lives

  303. rather than living recklessly,

  304. recklessly living out our lives without prudence.

  305. It's considered wise to set daily schedules

  306. and boundaries for your health,

  307. that you sleep at a reasonable hour,

  308. that you eat a healthy diet,

  309. that you exercise regularly

  310. so that you overall feel good.

  311. It's considered wise to set aside money

  312. for a rainy day

  313. in case accidents or hard times fall upon us.

  314. It's considered wise to practice

  315. a certain skill set in advance

  316. so that you're comfortable with it

  317. when your next project,

  318. your next performance,

  319. your next competition approaches.

  320. Practice makes perfect.

  321. There's value in wisdom,

  322. and so there is value in pursuing wisdom

  323. in our lives in this world.

  324. However,

  325. wisdom is not the panacea

  326. to all of life's problems.

  327. It's not going to solve everything in this life.

  328. Wisdom, too,

  329. will fail in this life of vanity

  330. because we live in a fallen world.

  331. Wisdom in this life

  332. still has its limitations and shortcomings.

  333. While it offers great benefits

  334. to those who seek it in life,

  335. wisdom is also very fragile.

  336. The preacher first makes this observation

  337. in the final verse of chapter 9,

  338. verse 18.

  339. Wisdom is better than weapons of war,

  340. but one sinner,

  341. one sinner,

  342. destroys much good.

  343. Wisdom is fragile

  344. because it's easily overshadowed

  345. by folly.

  346. When a sinner commits a foolish act,

  347. wisdom goes flying out the window,

  348. and what is meant for good

  349. becomes swiftly ruined.

  350. The preacher makes a comparison

  351. of this fact

  352. at the start of chapter 10,

  353. verse 1.

  354. Dead flies make the perfumer's ointment

  355. give off a stench.

  356. So a little folly

  357. outweighs wisdom and honor.

  358. When flies smell

  359. the sweet scent of perfume,

  360. they fly towards the jar,

  361. they land in its oil

  362. only to get stuck and trapped,

  363. and they die,

  364. and they begin to rot.

  365. Such a tiny thing like a fly

  366. can ruin an entire jar

  367. of that sweet,

  368. aromatic perfume

  369. instead with a foul stench.

  370. Folly can easily ruin wisdom.

  371. I remember when I was in second grade,

  372. our teacher promised

  373. my class of 20 kids

  374. a pizza party,

  375. a pizza and movie party on Friday

  376. if we behaved well

  377. throughout the week.

  378. We were like saints

  379. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.

  380. Our behavior was so good

  381. that even other teachers

  382. from other classes

  383. were complimenting us,

  384. being like,

  385. oh, these kids are so well behaved.

  386. But then,

  387. during a fateful Thursday

  388. fire drill exercise,

  389. our class got a little too goofy.

  390. We got a little too talkative

  391. when we should have been

  392. quiet and attentive,

  393. and we were reprimanded.

  394. Our teacher was greatly disappointed,

  395. and she canceled

  396. our pizza party.

  397. No pizza,

  398. no movies.

  399. I'm pretty sure it was

  400. High School Musical

  401. when it first came out.

  402. No High School Musical.

  403. I'm not mad about that.

  404. But we would have to try

  405. to earn that good thing later.

  406. In that one moment,

  407. a little bit of childish tomfoolery

  408. completely overshadowed

  409. all of our hard work

  410. to behave well,

  411. and our chance for a fun Friday,

  412. a good thing,

  413. was ruined.

  414. Wisdom is fragile

  415. because a little folly

  416. outweighs wisdom.

  417. Just as it's quicker

  418. to destroy something

  419. than it is to build it,

  420. it's easier to ruin

  421. a good thing with folly

  422. than to build it up

  423. with wisdom.

  424. Wisdom is also fragile

  425. because of the vanity

  426. and the futility

  427. of life

  428. in this fallen world.

  429. As the preacher

  430. had said earlier,

  431. there is vanity in life,

  432. and there's futility

  433. in trying to take control

  434. of life

  435. because everything

  436. is up to time

  437. and chance.

  438. Just because you plug in A

  439. doesn't mean you will

  440. always generate B

  441. as a result.

  442. There is no formula

  443. that will give us

  444. the exact life circumstances,

  445. and wisdom

  446. is no exception to this.

  447. There will be moments

  448. when wisdom

  449. is sought out

  450. and exercised

  451. and will still encounter

  452. unexpected circumstances,

  453. disappointments.

  454. The preacher

  455. seems to be cognizant

  456. of this fact as well

  457. based on his observations

  458. of a wrongdoing ruler

  459. in chapter 10, verse 4.

  460. The preacher,

  461. he first exercises

  462. a word of caution

  463. and wisdom

  464. telling us

  465. to appease

  466. an angry ruler

  467. with calmness

  468. in order to lay

  469. offenses to rest.

  470. The preacher

  471. sheds light

  472. on why he gives

  473. this advice of wisdom

  474. in verse 5.

  475. He's seen

  476. an evil

  477. under the sun

  478. as it were

  479. an error

  480. proceeding

  481. from the ruler.

  482. The ruler

  483. has done something

  484. wicked

  485. that has resulted

  486. in error,

  487. and his offenses

  488. have revealed

  489. the waywardness

  490. of wisdom

  491. in a fallen society.

  492. under that king's rule.

  493. The preacher

  494. observes in verse 6

  495. that folly

  496. is set in high places

  497. and the rich

  498. sit in the low place.

  499. The rich here

  500. are considered

  501. the wise

  502. as they've gained wealth

  503. through their wisdom.

  504. And so we'd expect

  505. that the wise

  506. and the rich

  507. would be able to sit

  508. in the high places

  509. while the fools

  510. sit in the low places.

  511. But in this fallen

  512. and vain society,

  513. the rules are reversed

  514. and what we expect

  515. is all backwards.

  516. We'd expect princes

  517. to be on horses

  518. while the slaves

  519. walked on the ground

  520. guiding those horses.

  521. But here again,

  522. we have the rules reversed.

  523. The princes walk

  524. on the ground

  525. while the slaves

  526. ride the horses.

  527. Our traditional wisdom

  528. has gone out the window

  529. because of the vanity

  530. and futility of life

  531. in this broken world.

  532. all the more exacerbated

  533. by the ruler's evil errors.

  534. This is the reality

  535. that we live in today

  536. as well.

  537. There are rulers,

  538. there are principalities

  539. of evil in this world

  540. that have turned wisdom

  541. that is supposed

  542. to be good

  543. upside down,

  544. inside out,

  545. in a way that

  546. doesn't make sense for us.

  547. We expect wisdom

  548. to bring us good,

  549. but there are so many instances

  550. where instead

  551. the folly of this world

  552. takes over

  553. and we're instead met

  554. with negative circumstances,

  555. disappointments,

  556. hurt in our lives.

  557. The preacher gives us

  558. four more instances

  559. in which he has seen

  560. those circumstances

  561. not go as expected

  562. as a result

  563. of the unknowability

  564. and the uncertainty

  565. of life and wisdom.

  566. Verses eight and nine,

  567. we see that there are

  568. four men

  569. who are doing

  570. their regular

  571. day-to-day jobs.

  572. one man

  573. who's digging pits,

  574. presumably for hunting traps,

  575. one man

  576. who breaks down walls,

  577. probably for construction,

  578. another man

  579. who queries stones,

  580. also for building,

  581. and one man

  582. who splits logs

  583. for wood.

  584. What each man does

  585. should be nothing

  586. out of the ordinary

  587. as they're simply

  588. performing

  589. their usual duties

  590. in life.

  591. But what we see next

  592. is an ironic twist

  593. to their life circumstances

  594. where folly

  595. takes a hold

  596. of their wisdom,

  597. of their skill,

  598. and their jobs.

  599. The man who digs a pit

  600. is going to fall

  601. into his own pit.

  602. The man who breaks

  603. through a wall

  604. will be bitten

  605. by a snake

  606. that's hiding in the wall.

  607. The man who quarries stones

  608. will injure himself

  609. with his own stone,

  610. and the man

  611. who splits wood

  612. will be endangered

  613. by his own logs.

  614. These scenarios

  615. feel very much

  616. like some sort of

  617. Looney Tunes,

  618. Tom and Jerry

  619. sort of slapstick comedy.

  620. Just like dynamite

  621. blows up in

  622. Wally Coyote's face,

  623. or just like Tom

  624. accidentally shaving

  625. his own tail,

  626. the schemes of man

  627. fall into circumstances

  628. of folly,

  629. ridiculousness.

  630. Not necessarily

  631. because people

  632. have done wrong,

  633. but because random

  634. and uncertain things

  635. happen in this

  636. fallen world.

  637. Life,

  638. and the control

  639. of life

  640. is vanity

  641. and futility,

  642. and fully trusting

  643. in wisdom

  644. in this vain

  645. and futile world

  646. will lead us

  647. to destruction as well,

  648. for even wisdom

  649. will fail.

  650. Chapter 10

  651. ends by once again

  652. reflecting on the ruler.

  653. From verse 16,

  654. the preacher points out

  655. how valuable it is

  656. to have a mature

  657. and a wise ruler.

  658. A ruler who feasts

  659. and drinks

  660. at the appropriate time

  661. for strength

  662. and not for the sake

  663. of drunkenness.

  664. A foolhardy

  665. and immature king

  666. like a child

  667. will laze around

  668. and not care

  669. for his kingdom

  670. to the point

  671. that the roof

  672. sinks in

  673. and the house leaks.

  674. To the foolish king,

  675. bread and wine

  676. are meant

  677. solely for pleasure

  678. and not for energy

  679. to exercise

  680. great wisdom

  681. in his rule.

  682. And money

  683. is simply a means

  684. to have more access

  685. to that pleasure.

  686. The preacher

  687. laments

  688. of the folly

  689. that this king

  690. indulges in

  691. when there's so much value

  692. and opportunity

  693. for wisdom

  694. to bring the kingdom

  695. back into order.

  696. And yet,

  697. the preacher

  698. still advises

  699. not to criticize

  700. or curse

  701. the ruler,

  702. the king,

  703. and to instead

  704. offer calm silence

  705. lest any criticism

  706. reach the king's ears.

  707. Once again,

  708. there is vanity

  709. in valuing wisdom

  710. because bringing up

  711. what is considered

  712. to be wise

  713. will only enrage

  714. the king

  715. and cause

  716. even more

  717. folly

  718. and strife.

  719. Church,

  720. while wisdom

  721. has great value,

  722. it's also

  723. very fragile

  724. because we live

  725. in this broken

  726. and folly-filled world.

  727. Nothing is certain

  728. in this life

  729. and even our efforts

  730. to be wise

  731. won't always bring us

  732. the positive results

  733. that we want.

  734. The reality

  735. that wisdom

  736. is fragile

  737. can be

  738. very discouraging

  739. for many of us.

  740. We live

  741. in a community

  742. in East Cambridge

  743. and greater Boston

  744. where we really

  745. take pride

  746. in our wisdom,

  747. in our intellect,

  748. in our intelligence.

  749. And so to hear

  750. that

  751. moments when we

  752. apply wisdom,

  753. moments where we

  754. apply our wits

  755. and our intelligence,

  756. it will fail us

  757. can be deeply

  758. discouraging.

  759. No matter how much

  760. we try to pursue

  761. wisdom

  762. and exercise wisdom

  763. in our lives,

  764. we can't entirely

  765. trust in wisdom

  766. to consistently

  767. come through

  768. for our benefit.

  769. Wisdom

  770. will fail.

  771. And that's because

  772. there's sin in this world

  773. and sin brings forth

  774. folly,

  775. disaster,

  776. and unforeseen

  777. hardships.

  778. Whether that's a result

  779. of our own error

  780. or not,

  781. this is because

  782. we

  783. who pursue wisdom

  784. are also sinful.

  785. We may think

  786. we are exercising

  787. good wisdom,

  788. but the heart

  789. is deceitful

  790. above all things.

  791. We are broken

  792. and sinful people

  793. operating in a broken

  794. and sinful world.

  795. And so even

  796. our best of intentions

  797. can lead

  798. to folly

  799. and destruction.

  800. There are probably

  801. many of us here

  802. who have experienced

  803. the failure

  804. of wisdom

  805. and the folly

  806. of this world

  807. in disappointing ways,

  808. deeply disappointing ways.

  809. You may have taken

  810. all the necessary measures

  811. to be qualified

  812. for a job

  813. or an academic program

  814. only for your application

  815. to be

  816. utterly,

  817. brutally rejected.

  818. You've saved up

  819. your money

  820. for years and years

  821. wanting to save

  822. for a good thing

  823. like a home,

  824. a car,

  825. only to have to spend

  826. it all in order

  827. to make repairs

  828. for a sudden accident

  829. in life.

  830. You've spent

  831. so much time

  832. trying to make sure

  833. that you're healthy

  834. and you're well

  835. only to be diagnosed

  836. with an illness

  837. or unforeseen condition.

  838. Or you've worked

  839. so hard

  840. to try to build

  841. your community,

  842. your friendships,

  843. and your relationships

  844. only to suddenly

  845. be relocated

  846. to another city

  847. or state

  848. or nation.

  849. There are so many

  850. unexpected

  851. and difficult

  852. misfortunes

  853. and disappointments

  854. in life

  855. that are worth

  856. grieving over.

  857. And these things

  858. will show us

  859. that the wisdom

  860. of this world

  861. will fail us

  862. in innumerable ways.

  863. But while the wisdom

  864. of this world

  865. is fleeting,

  866. the wisdom

  867. of our God

  868. is not.

  869. God's wisdom

  870. will never fail

  871. those who trust

  872. in him.

  873. The apostle Paul

  874. writes in Romans

    Romans 8:28

  875. chapter 8,

  876. verse 28,

  877. we know that

  878. for those

  879. who love God

  880. all things

  881. work together

  882. for good.

  883. For those

  884. who are called

  885. according to his purpose.

  886. God is working

  887. all things

  888. for our good.

  889. Even the things

  890. that seem like

  891. folly,

  892. foolishness to us.

  893. Though we may not

  894. understand how God

  895. is using our hardships

  896. or the foolish things

  897. of the world

  898. for our good,

  899. we're called

  900. to trust in him

  901. and his word,

  902. which clearly says

  903. that he will work

  904. for our good,

  905. for his purpose

  906. and his glory.

  907. While we can't trust

  908. in our own wisdom

  909. to sustain us

  910. in this world,

  911. we can submit to

  912. and trust

  913. in God's word

  914. and his wisdom,

  915. which will carry us

  916. and sustain us

  917. in joy

  918. and in hope

  919. until the ends

  920. of our days.

  921. even when

  922. the folly

  923. of this world

  924. seems overwhelmingly

  925. perplexing

  926. and discouraging,

  927. godly wisdom

  928. teaches us

  929. to trust

  930. in God's

  931. redemptive work

  932. of a better future.

  933. Though we may not

  934. know the future

  935. of our lives,

  936. though we may not

  937. know what happens

  938. a year from now,

  939. a week from now,

  940. 30 minutes from now,

  941. we continue to hope

  942. in God's

  943. redemptive work

  944. in our lives.

  945. That one day,

  946. all the folly

  947. and evil of this world

  948. will be undone

  949. and God's goodness

  950. will pervade

  951. across all the world.

  952. God's wisdom

  953. will pervade

  954. across all the world

  955. and those who believe

  956. in the gospel

  957. of Jesus Christ

  958. will be in eternal

  959. fellowship

  960. with him forever.

  961. We have assurance

  962. of God's perfect wisdom

  963. and his sovereignty

  964. over us

  965. through the crucifixion,

  966. death,

  967. and resurrection

  968. of his son,

  969. Jesus.

  970. We had read this

  971. as our assurance

  972. of pardon earlier,

  973. but Paul writes

  974. in 1 Corinthians 1,

    1 Corinthians 1:18–25

  975. verse 18 to 25,

  976. for the word

  977. of the cross

  978. is folly

  979. to those

  980. who are perishing,

  981. but to us

  982. who are being saved,

  983. it is the power

  984. of God,

  985. for it is written,

  986. I will destroy

  987. the wisdom

  988. of the wise

  989. and the discernment

  990. of the discerning

  991. I will thwart.

  992. Where is the one

  993. who is wise?

  994. Where is the scribe?

  995. Where is the debater

  996. of this age?

  997. Has not God

  998. made foolish

  999. the wisdom

  1000. of the world?

  1001. For since

  1002. in the wisdom

  1003. of God

  1004. the world

  1005. did not know

  1006. God through wisdom,

  1007. it pleased God

  1008. through the folly

  1009. of what we preach

  1010. to save those

  1011. who believe.

  1012. For Jews

  1013. demand signs

  1014. and Greeks

  1015. seek wisdom,

  1016. but we preach

  1017. Christ crucified,

  1018. a stumbling block

  1019. to the Jews

  1020. and folly

  1021. to Gentiles,

  1022. but to those

  1023. who are called

  1024. both Jews

  1025. and Greeks,

  1026. Christ the power

  1027. of God

  1028. and Christ

  1029. the wisdom

  1030. of God.

  1031. For the foolishness

  1032. of God

  1033. is wiser

  1034. than men

  1035. and the weakness

  1036. of God

  1037. is stronger

  1038. than men.

  1039. Christ

  1040. is the power

  1041. of God

  1042. and Christ

  1043. is the wisdom

  1044. of God

  1045. and Christ

  1046. displays the power

  1047. of God

  1048. and the wisdom

  1049. of God

  1050. by dying

  1051. on the cross

  1052. for our sins.

  1053. Talk about something

  1054. so unfathomable,

  1055. so wondrous,

  1056. so unimaginable

  1057. that God

  1058. would send

  1059. his only son

  1060. to die

  1061. for us.

  1062. How can we

  1063. fathom

  1064. Jesus dying

  1065. for us?

  1066. We're people

  1067. who can't even

  1068. fathom

  1069. when others

  1070. do favors

  1071. for us.

  1072. We're people

  1073. who can't even

  1074. fathom

  1075. when others

  1076. offer to buy

  1077. a meal

  1078. for us.

  1079. We say,

  1080. oh,

  1081. why are you

  1082. doing this?

  1083. You don't need

  1084. to do this.

  1085. I don't deserve

  1086. this.

  1087. But this Jesus,

  1088. the son

  1089. of the living

  1090. God,

  1091. willingly

  1092. gave his

  1093. life for our

  1094. sins

  1095. by dying

  1096. the most

  1097. humiliating

  1098. death on the

  1099. cross so that

  1100. we sinful

  1101. beings can be

  1102. in right

  1103. relationship

  1104. with God

  1105. so that we

  1106. can behold

  1107. his glorious

  1108. power and

  1109. wisdom and

  1110. share an

  1111. eternal life

  1112. with him.

  1113. To this

  1114. foolish world

  1115. full of folly,

  1116. they see the

  1117. gospel as

  1118. folly.

  1119. I remember

  1120. when I first

  1121. encountered the

  1122. love of God.

  1123. in high school

  1124. and I just

  1125. began to

  1126. fathom the

  1127. gravity of

  1128. Jesus dying

  1129. for my sins.

  1130. I was a

  1131. mess.

  1132. Weeping at

  1133. my bed,

  1134. I asked God,

  1135. why?

  1136. Why would

  1137. you die for

  1138. me?

  1139. It's so

  1140. ridiculous that

  1141. such a big

  1142. God would

  1143. die for such

  1144. a small

  1145. being like

  1146. me.

  1147. Why have

  1148. you chosen

  1149. me?

  1150. I don't

  1151. deserve this.

  1152. You didn't

  1153. have to do

  1154. this.

  1155. To our

  1156. foolish world's

  1157. understanding of

  1158. wisdom,

  1159. this is the

  1160. most reckless,

  1161. nonsensical,

  1162. unwise thing

  1163. that God

  1164. would do for

  1165. us.

  1166. Paul even

  1167. says so in

  1168. 1 Corinthians

  1169. 1.

  1170. The word of

  1171. the cross,

  1172. the gospel,

  1173. is folly to

  1174. those who are

  1175. perishing.

  1176. the difference

  1177. for us

  1178. believers,

  1179. however,

  1180. is this.

  1181. We recognize

  1182. and accept

  1183. the miraculous

  1184. salvation that

  1185. we've received

  1186. from Jesus

  1187. on the cross

  1188. as a gift

  1189. of grace.

  1190. Yes,

  1191. we don't

  1192. deserve this

  1193. salvation.

  1194. Yes,

  1195. the salvation

  1196. that we

  1197. receive through

  1198. Jesus'

  1199. sacrifice does

  1200. not make

  1201. sense.

  1202. Why would

  1203. such a holy

  1204. and mighty

  1205. God give

  1206. his son

  1207. for us?

  1208. It doesn't

  1209. make sense.

  1210. But God,

  1211. being infinitely

  1212. gracious and

  1213. loving toward

  1214. us,

  1215. gave us

  1216. his only

  1217. son,

  1218. Jesus,

  1219. as the

  1220. atonement

  1221. for our

  1222. sins,

  1223. to give

  1224. us the

  1225. opportunity

  1226. to accept

  1227. this gracious

  1228. gift of

  1229. salvation,

  1230. to be in

  1231. right and

  1232. eternal

  1233. relationship

  1234. with him.

  1235. Jesus,

  1236. who is

  1237. the great

  1238. word,

  1239. the logos

  1240. of God,

  1241. and the

  1242. wisdom of

  1243. God,

  1244. became our

  1245. righteousness,

  1246. our

  1247. sanctification,

  1248. and our

  1249. redemption,

  1250. so that putting

  1251. our faith in

  1252. him will be

  1253. the greatest

  1254. wisdom we

  1255. could ever

  1256. receive.

  1257. Through the

  1258. cross and the

  1259. resurrection,

  1260. Jesus is

  1261. magnified as

  1262. the power and

  1263. the wisdom of

  1264. God.

  1265. And when Jesus

  1266. comes again,

  1267. he'll bring to

  1268. completion the

  1269. good work that

  1270. he began in

  1271. us.

  1272. And we'll be

  1273. able to see

  1274. clearer than

  1275. ever and

  1276. understand better

  1277. than ever God's

  1278. infinite wisdom

  1279. in our lives

  1280. manifested through

  1281. his son,

  1282. Jesus.

  1283. Church,

  1284. earthly wisdom

  1285. will bring some

  1286. level of benefit

  1287. and success to

  1288. our lives in

  1289. this life and

  1290. in this world,

  1291. but it's also

  1292. going to surely

  1293. fail us and

  1294. disappoint us

  1295. sooner than

  1296. later.

  1297. Earthly wisdom

  1298. will not be what

  1299. saves us,

  1300. for that's what

  1301. only godly

  1302. wisdom,

  1303. the logos,

  1304. the wisdom

  1305. that is Jesus

  1306. can do.

  1307. And so amidst

  1308. the fragility,

  1309. the futility of

  1310. earthly wisdom,

  1311. let us trust in

  1312. God and his

  1313. eternal word,

  1314. who is Jesus

  1315. Christ,

  1316. our greater

  1317. and more

  1318. perfect wisdom.

  1319. Let's pray.

  1320. Let's pray.

  1321. Let's pray.

  1322. Let's pray.

  1323. Let's pray.

  1324. Let's pray.

  1325. Let's pray.

  1326. Let's pray.

  1327. Let's pray.

  1328. Let's pray.

  1329. Lord, we

  1330. confess that

  1331. time and time

  1332. again, we're just

  1333. so enamored by

  1334. the wisdom of

  1335. this world,

  1336. which is actually

  1337. foolish folly,

  1338. Lord.

  1339. Lord, we confess

  1340. that we often

  1341. try to take our

  1342. life into our own

  1343. hands, that we

  1344. try to take control,

  1345. that we try to

  1346. trust fully in our

  1347. own wisdom, the

  1348. wisdom of this

  1349. world, to make

  1350. much of our own

  1351. lives.

  1352. Lord, we confess

  1353. that that is

  1354. idolatry.

  1355. Because if we

  1356. don't trust in

  1357. you, we don't

  1358. put you in the

  1359. first place,

  1360. Lord.

  1361. Lord, help us to

  1362. be a church.

1363. Help us to be a

  1364. people who look

  1365. to Christ as our

  1366. greater wisdom.

  1367. Lord, help us to

  1368. be a people when

  1369. we're faced with

  1370. the folly, the

  1371. foolishness, the

  1372. hardships, and the

  1373. disappointments of

  1374. this life.

1375. Help us to look to

  1376. you when our

  1377. wisdom disappoints us

  1378. and fails us,

  1379. knowing that you

  1380. are our greater

  1381. wisdom, that you

  1382. are our perfect

  1383. wisdom manifest in

  1384. your son, Jesus.

  1385. Thank you for being

  1386. our greater wisdom

  1387. and filling us with

  1388. hope of a greater

  1389. future because you

  1390. are our wisdom.

  1391. You are our

  1392. eternal word,

  1393. Lord.

  1394. We thank you,

  1395. Lord.

  1396. We love you, and

1397. we pray all this in

  1398. Jesus' name.

  1399. Amen.
