  1. Hey guys, it's good to worship with you.

  2. I do apologize for the cancellation for the prayer.

  3. I think it's been like nine years running almost

  4. and we haven't canceled prayer,

  5. so it's an unusual season we're in,

  6. but we will resume the following week.

  7. If you don't have a Bible, please raise your hand.

  8. We'd love to get you a copy

  9. and you can have that as your own

  10. to take home with you.

  11. Thanks guys.

  12. And if you have your Bibles already,

  13. please turn with me to Ecclesiastes chapter 11.

    Ecclesiastes 11 chapter mention

  14. We're gonna go through all of 11

  15. all the way to chapter 12, verse 8.

  16. This is the second to last sermon

  17. in the book of Ecclesiastes.

  18. We've made our way through the entire book

  19. and the author is starting to wrap up his main points here.

  20. For those of you who don't know me,

  21. my name is Sean.

  22. I'm one of the pastors of Trinity Cambridge Church

  23. and it is my great joy and privilege

  24. to preach God's word to you this morning.

  25. Let me pray now for the reading

  26. and preaching of God's word.

  27. Father, we ask that you

  28. rejoice our hearts,

  29. delight our hearts,

  30. with revelation of who you are.

  31. What a gracious,

  32. generous,

  33. merciful God you are.

  34. So that our hearts well up with praise

  35. and thanksgiving to you this morning.

  36. And I ask also that you'll help us

  37. to remember that you are our creator,

  38. that we are your creatures.

  39. That a deep humility

  40. may be instilled within us

  41. so that it affects

  42. everything we do in life

  43. and how we carry out our days.

  44. Address us now from your holy word.

  45. In Jesus' name we pray.

  46. Amen.

  47. If you are able,

  48. please stand and join us

  49. for the reading of God's word.

  50. We stand to honor God

  51. as we read his word to us.

  52. Ecclesiastes 11, 1 to 12, 8.

  53. Cast your bread upon the waters,

  54. for you will find it after many days.

  55. Give a portion to seven

  56. or even to eight,

  57. for you know not

  58. what disaster may happen on earth.

  59. If the clouds are full of rain,

  60. they empty themselves on the earth.

  61. And if a tree falls to the south

  62. or to the north,

  63. in the place where the tree falls,

  64. there it will lie.

  65. He who observes the wind

  66. will not sow,

  67. and he who regards the clouds

  68. will not reap.

  69. As you do not know the way

  70. the spirit comes to the bones

  71. in the womb of a woman

  72. with a child,

  73. so you do not know the work of God

  74. who makes everything.

  75. In the morning sow your seed,

  76. and at evening withhold not your hand,

  77. for you do not know

  78. which will prosper.

  79. This or that,

  80. or whether both alike will be good.

  81. Light is sweet,

  82. and it is pleasant for the eyes

  83. to see the sun.

  84. So if a person lives many years,

  85. let him rejoice in them all,

  86. but let him remember

  87. that the days of darkness

  88. will be many.

  89. All that comes is vanity.

  90. Rejoice, O young man,

  91. in your youth,

  92. and let your heart cheer you

  93. in the days of your youth.

  94. Walk in the ways of your heart

  95. and the sight of your eyes,

  96. but know that for all these things

  97. God will bring you into judgment.

  98. Remove vexation from your heart

  99. and put away pain from your body,

  100. for youth and the dawn of life

  101. are vanity.

  102. Remember also your creator

  103. in the days of your youth.

  104. Before the evil days come

  105. and the years draw near,

  106. of which you will say,

  107. I have no pleasure in them.

  108. Before the sun and the light

  109. and the moon and the stars

  110. are darkened

  111. and the clouds return

  112. after the rain.

  113. In the day when the keepers

  114. of the house tremble

  115. and the strong men are bent

  116. and the grinders seize

  117. because they are a few

  118. and those who look

  119. through the windows are dimmed.

  120. And the doors on the street

  121. are shut

  122. when the sound of the grinding

  123. is low

  124. and one rises up

  125. at the sound of a bird

  126. and all the daughters of song

  127. are brought low.

  128. They are afraid also

  129. of what is high

  130. and terrors are in the way.

  131. The almond tree blossoms,

  132. the grasshopper drags itself along

  133. and desire fails

  134. because man is going

  135. to his eternal home

  136. and the mourners go

  137. about the streets.

  138. Before the silver cord is snapped

  139. or the golden bowl is broken

  140. or the pitcher is shattered

  141. at the fountain

  142. or the wheel broken

  143. at the cistern

  144. and the dust returns

  145. to the earth as it was

  146. and the spirit returns

  147. to God who gave it.

  148. A vanity of vanities,

  149. says the preacher.

  150. All is vanity.

  151. This is God's holy

  152. and authoritative word.

  153. You may be seated.

  154. In a 1931 interview,

  155. Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw

  156. is quoted as saying this,

  157. Youth is the most beautiful thing

  158. in the world

  159. and what a pity

  160. that it has to be wasted

  161. on children.

  162. That's most likely

  163. the origin of the popular saying,

  164. Youth is wasted on the young.

  165. It gets at the idea

  166. that youth lack the wisdom

  167. and experience

  168. to make the most

  169. of their health and energy.

  170. But by the time they gain

  171. that wisdom and experience,

  172. they become old

  173. and they no longer

  174. has that youthful energy.

  175. energy.

  176. Our church is young.

  177. It has been less than 10 years

  178. since we planted this church.

  179. I'm a young pastor.

  180. I'm just shy of 40.

  181. I know that seems old

  182. to some of you,

  183. but according to 1 Timothy 5,

  184. it's in the Bible, right?

  185. This is according

  186. to 1 Timothy 5,

  187. the cutoff line

  188. between older widows

  189. and younger widows

  190. is 60.

  191. So I still have 20 years

  192. of youngness left.

  193. And by that definition,

  194. only a handful of people

  195. in our church

  196. are actually old.

  197. So most of us

  198. don't get to wear

  199. that I'm old

  200. and wise badge yet.

  201. And Ecclesiastes 11.1-12.8,

  202. which specifically

  203. addresses youth

  204. multiple times,

  205. offers us timely

  206. and relevant advice.

  207. And the main point

  208. of the passage is this.

  209. Knowing that life

  210. is but a breath,

  211. we should rejoice

  212. in our youth

  213. and remember our creator.

  214. First, I'm going to talk

  215. about accepting risk,

  216. 11.1-6,

  217. and then we'll talk

  218. about rejoicing,

  219. the main command

  220. of that section,

  221. rejoice in your youth.

  222. And then later

  223. in chapter 12,

  224. remember your creator.

  225. 11.1-6 is a reminder

  226. that we cannot know

  227. or control the future.

  228. Over and over again,

  229. we are told

  230. what we do not know.

  231. So look at the passage

  232. with me, verse 2.

  233. For you know not

  234. what disaster may happen

  235. on earth.

  236. Again, verse 5.

  237. And you do not know

  238. the way the spirit

  239. comes to the bones.

  240. And again,

  241. so you do not know

  242. the work of God

  243. who makes everything.

  244. Verse 6.

  245. For you do not know

  246. which will prosper,

  247. this or that.

  248. So 11.1-6

  249. is all about

  250. the uncertainty of life

  251. and risk

  252. that characterize

  253. that uncertain life,

  254. the life of creatures.

  255. Because we are not

  256. the creator

  257. who is sovereign

  258. and in control

  259. over all things,

  260. but the creatures,

  261. we live in that uncertainty

  262. and we must accept

  263. that risk.

  264. The beginning of wisdom

  265. is the fear of the Lord,

  266. recognizing that God

  267. is God

  268. and that we are not God.

  269. So then the truly wise

  270. recognize the limitations

  271. of their wisdom.

  272. And that wisdom

  273. is not meant

  274. to make us masters

  275. of our fate,

  276. to be able to control

  277. the outcomes of our lives,

  278. but rather wisdom

  279. is meant to make us servants

  280. who are submitted

  281. to the sovereign purposes

  282. of God.

  283. That's why the beginning

  284. of wisdom

  285. is the fear of the Lord

  286. and humility.

  287. And humbly acknowledging

  288. that reality means

  289. we accept

  290. and account for risk

  291. in all the choices

  292. that we make.

  293. Verse 1 says,

  294. cast your bread

  295. upon the waters,

  296. for you will find it

  297. after many days.

  298. Bread here

  299. doesn't refer to

  300. a literal loaf of bread

  301. but to our income

  302. or our source of livelihood,

  303. similar to how we use

  304. the expression breadwinner

  305. to refer to people

  306. who are winning

  307. the livelihood,

  308. the main income

  309. of the household.

  310. And so this here,

  311. probably we can think

  312. of bread as money

  313. or our resources

  314. and the preacher

  315. counsels us

  316. to cast that

  317. upon the waters,

  318. for you will find it

  319. after many days.

  320. Those two main words,

  321. cast and waters

  322. occur together

  323. in Isaiah 18,

    Isaiah 18:2

  324. verse 2,

  325. which is a helpful

  326. parallel for understanding this.

  327. It speaks of nations

  328. that cast ambassadors

  329. by the sea

  330. in vessels of papyrus

  331. on the waters.

  332. I think this is meant

  333. to help us

  334. understand this first.

  335. I think this is a reference

  336. to maritime trade.

  337. When you cast your resources

  338. out upon the waters

  339. in hopes that it will

  340. yield return

  341. after many days.

  342. Maritime trade

  343. in those days especially

  344. took a long time

  345. and it required patience.

  346. It was not for people

  347. who desired

  348. instant gratification.

  349. A patient investor

  350. who is willing

  351. to make an investment

  352. for the future

  353. and wait for a long time,

  354. that's the counsel

  355. that the preacher

  356. is giving here.

  357. It's similar

  358. to what famous investor

  359. Warren Buffett

  360. said one time.

  361. He says,

  362. someone's sitting

  363. in the shade today

  364. because someone planted

  365. a tree a long time ago.

  366. Verse 2 continues

  367. that theme.

  368. Give a portion

  369. to 7 or even to 8

  370. for you know not

  371. what disaster

  372. may happen on earth.

  373. Here's another example

  374. of graded numerical parallelism.

  375. You guys remember that

  376. from a few weeks ago?

  377. Yeah, there you go.

  378. The point isn't

  379. that you should invest

  380. in exactly 7 ventures

  381. or exactly 8.

  382. The point is that

  383. you should diversify

  384. your investments.

  385. Don't put all your eggs

  386. in one basket

  387. for you know not

  388. what disaster

  389. may happen on earth.

  390. Don't put all your money

  391. into real estate

  392. because a housing bubble

  393. collapse might ruin

  394. all of your investments.

  395. Don't put all your money

  396. in a single company stock.

  397. There are countless

  398. cautionary tales

  399. of people who have lost

  400. all their money that way.

  401. As recently as 2022,

  402. the cryptocurrency exchange

  403. FTX collapsed

  404. due to embezzlement.

  405. Their customers lost

  406. 8 billion in assets

  407. and their investors

  408. lost 1.7 billion.

  409. And who could have

  410. seen that coming?

  411. At the height of FTX,

  412. the CEO,

  413. Sam Bankman-Fried's

  414. net worth was

  415. above 15 million.

  416. He was compared

  417. to finance titans

  418. like J.P. Morgan

  419. and Warren Buffett.

  420. He was sitting

  421. on conference panels

  422. along with people

  423. like Bill Clinton

  424. and Tony Blair.

  425. But now he's in jail.

  426. Who could have

  427. seen that coming?

  428. No one can look

  429. five or ten years

  430. into the future

  431. and say this stock

  432. will do well

  433. and that this company,

  434. this industry will boom.

  435. Diversification

  436. is one of the first

  437. important principles

  438. of investing

  439. that you learn.

  440. By spreading out

  441. your investments

  442. across different assets,

  443. you reduce your chance

  444. of having all of it

  445. wiped out

  446. on a single bad day.

  447. This interpretation

  448. of verses 1-2

  449. as referring to

  450. financial investment

  451. and trade

  452. is confirmed

  453. by the fact

  454. that it was just

  455. preceded by 10-19.

  456. Bread is made

  457. for laughter

  458. and wine

  459. and gladden's life

  460. and money answers

  461. everything.

  462. Given the effectiveness

  463. of money

  464. and the usefulness

  465. of money in this world,

  466. it's teaching us now

  467. to be a good steward

  468. of that.

  469. This interpretation

  470. is also confirmed

  471. by the following verses,

  472. verses 3-6,

  473. which talk about

  474. financial investment

  475. this time

  476. with the metaphor

  477. of sowing seeds.

  478. Verse 3 says,

  479. If the clouds

  480. are full of rain,

  481. they empty themselves

  482. on the earth,

  483. and if a tree falls

  484. to the south

  485. or to the north,

  486. in the place

  487. where the tree falls

  488. there it will lie.

  489. Again, the point here

  490. is we can't control

  491. these things.

  492. We can't control

  493. when the rain falls.

  494. The rain falls

  495. when the clouds

  496. are full,

  497. and there's not much

  498. we can do

  499. to change that.

  500. Even to this day,

  501. the best we can do

  502. is forecast the weather,

  503. and even that

  504. is hit or miss

  505. because the rain falls

  506. when it's ready,

  507. when the clouds are full

  508. and we have no control

  509. over it.

  510. When rain doesn't fall,

  511. we have drought,

  512. and when rain falls

  513. too much,

  514. we have flooding

  515. and we can't control it.

  516. Similarly,

  517. we can't control

  518. whether a tree falls

  519. to the south

  520. or to the north.

  521. That depends

  522. on the natural lean

  523. of the tree

  524. or the direction

  525. of the wind

  526. that brought

  527. the tree down,

  528. and we can't control it.

  529. And unless you have

  530. heavy modern equipment,

  531. you also can't move

  532. a large tree

  533. when it falls

  534. to the ground.

  535. It's going to sit there,

  536. whether it fell

  537. to the north

  538. or to the south,

  539. and we have

  540. no control over it.

  541. These are things,

  542. and these are examples

  543. of things

  544. that are outside

  545. of our control

  546. in life,

  547. and if we

  548. preoccupy ourselves

  549. too much

  550. with things

  551. that we cannot control,

  552. it makes us

  553. indecisive

  554. and inactive.

  555. Verse 4 says this,

  556. He who observes

  557. the wind

  558. will not sow,

  559. and he who regards

  560. the clouds

  561. will not reap.

  562. If we're spending

  563. all day observing

  564. the direction

  565. of the wind,

  566. trying to find

  567. the very best time

  568. to scatter the seeds,

  569. then you will always

  570. be watching the wind.

  571. Likewise,

  572. if you spend

  573. your day

  574. watching the clouds

  575. to make sure

  576. there is no hint

  577. of rain

  578. or trying to figure

  579. out the very best time,

  580. the perfect time

  581. for you to start

  582. reaping the harvest,

  583. then you're going

  584. to be looking on

  585. for too long,

  586. and the harvest

  587. will be gone.

  588. We need to learn,

  589. the preacher

  590. is telling us,

  591. we need to learn

  592. to relinquish control

  593. over that which

  594. never had control

  595. in the first place.

  596. we need to be okay

  597. with acting

  598. at times that

  599. are not what we

  600. deem to be the best

  601. or the perfect time

  602. sometimes,

  603. because the opportune

  604. moment might not come.

  605. Verse 5 continues

  606. this theme of ignorance.

  607. As you do not know

  608. the way,

  609. the spirit comes

  610. to the bones

  611. in the womb

  612. of a woman with child,

  613. so you do not know

  614. the work of God

  615. who makes everything.

  616. The spirit,

  617. the breath of life,

  618. comes from God

  619. and animates

  620. the conceived baby

  621. in the womb,

  622. but we can't tell

  623. which way

  624. the spirit comes.

  625. We do not know

  626. the work of God

  627. who makes everything.

  628. Just as we do not know

  629. from where

  630. that spirit comes

  631. to the baby

  632. in the womb,

  633. we do not know

  634. exactly which direction

  635. the wind will blow

  636. or when the rain

  637. will fall,

  638. and it is our

  639. humble lot

  640. as creatures

  641. to acknowledge that

  642. and live in accordance

  643. with that ignorance.

  644. is there something

  645. that you've always

  646. wanted to try

  647. but you haven't

  648. acted on it

  649. because you're waiting

  650. for the perfect time?

  651. That perfect time

  652. may never come,

  653. and no amount

  654. of scheming

  655. or planning

  656. on your part

  657. will give you

  658. control

  659. or guarantee you

  660. success.

  661. So why not act

  662. on it?

  663. Why not try it?

  664. In fact,

  665. why not try

  666. several things

  667. because you don't know

  668. which one will succeed.

  669. Don't let

  670. idolatry of success

  671. prevent you

  672. from enjoying

  673. the life you currently have,

  674. but also

  675. don't let fear

  676. of failure

  677. paralyze you

  678. from making bold decisions

  679. and taking risks.

  680. It says in verse 6,

  681. In the morning

  682. sow your seed

  683. and at evening

  684. withhold not your hand

  685. for you do not know

  686. which will prosper

  687. this or that

  688. or whether both alike

  689. will be good.

  690. You don't know

  691. which seed will perform better,

  692. one that you sowed

  693. in the morning

  694. or the one that you sowed

  695. in the evening,

  696. and so do both.

  697. That's the preacher's counsel.

  698. Acknowledge your ignorance,

  699. diversify your investments

  700. as a function

  701. and outworking

  702. of your humility

  703. before God.

  704. Verses 1 to 6

  705. are all getting

  706. to the same idea

  707. from different angles.

  708. There's one more application

  709. I want to bring out

  710. from this.

  711. You might think

  712. this is a bit of a stretch,

  713. but I think

  714. there is a helpful

  715. application for this

  716. for evangelism

  717. in our lives.

  718. In the parable

  719. of the talents

  720. in Matthew 25,

  721. the master entrusts

  722. his wealth,

  723. his property

  724. to three different servants.

  725. Two of them

  726. invest their money wisely

  727. and they make

  728. some dividends

  729. and they are commended

  730. by the master,

  731. but one of them,

  732. instead of doing anything

  733. with the money,

  734. decides that he's just

  735. going to bury the money

  736. in the ground

  737. so that he could have it safe

  738. for when the master returns.

  739. And this is his excuse

  740. when the master

  741. brings him to account.

  742. Master,

  743. I knew you to be

  744. a hard man,

  745. reaping where you did not sow

  746. and gathering

  747. where you scattered

  748. no seed,

  749. so I was afraid

  750. and I went and hid

  751. your talent in the ground.

  752. Here,

  753. you have what is yours.

  754. The master is

  755. understandably upset

  756. with him

  757. because this lazy servant

  758. didn't do anything

  759. with the money

  760. that he asked him

  761. to manage.

  762. At the very least,

  763. he could have just

  764. put it in the bank

  765. and it would have

  766. accrued some interest,

  767. but instead he decided

  768. to bury it in the ground

  769. to keep it safe

  770. because he feared

  771. the master,

  772. because he had

  773. an erroneous perception

  774. of the master

  775. as a hard man

  776. and a stingy man.

  777. He feared something

  778. might happen to the money,

  779. so he hid it

  780. and didn't do anything

  781. with it.

  782. He didn't take any risks.

  783. But the point of the parable

  784. is that God,

  785. our master,

  786. is not a hard master.

  787. He is a gracious

  788. and kind master

  789. and he has given us

  790. his grace.

  791. He has entrusted to us

  792. the good news

  793. of Jesus Christ

  794. so that we might

  795. sow it widely

  796. and liberally

  797. and give it out

  798. and share it with others.

  799. He wants his people

  800. to take gospel risks

  801. and to sow

  802. our gospel seeds

  803. widely.

  804. Knowing that we cannot

  805. control the outcome

  806. of our evangelism,

  807. God knows that

  808. better than we do.

  809. He's the one

  810. who gives the growth.

  811. Some of us

  812. never share

  813. the gospel

  814. with our unbelieving

  815. friends

  816. and our neighbors

  817. because we're always

  818. waiting for that

  819. perfect opportunity.

  820. We're observing

  821. the winds

  822. and watching

  823. the clouds,

  824. waiting for that

  825. perfect opportunity

  826. to come.

  827. Waiting for that moment

  828. when no one

  829. will be offended.

  830. Waiting for that moment

  831. when you will not

  832. be embarrassed.

  833. Waiting for that moment

  834. when you have

  835. all the theological

  836. answers.

  837. Brothers and sisters,

  838. that day might never

  839. come.

  840. And all the opportunities

  841. might pass you by

  842. while you're observing

  843. the wind

  844. and watching the clouds.

  845. So listen to the

  846. exhortation of verse 6.

  847. In the morning

  848. sow your seed

  849. and at evening

  850. withhold not your hand

  851. for you do not know

  852. which will prosper,

  853. this or that

  854. or whether both alike

  855. will be good.

  856. This is a

  857. not so well

  858. hidden secret

  859. that the best evangelists

  860. among us

  861. do not usually have

  862. a higher percentage

  863. of success rate

  864. in terms of

  865. people converting

  866. than the rest of us.

  867. You guys know that?

  868. They don't have

  869. a very high

  870. success rate

  871. on their own.

  872. The only difference

  873. between them

  874. and some of us

  875. is that

  876. they sow

  877. a lot more.

  878. They spread

  879. a lot more seeds.

  880. D.L. Moody

  881. was one such

  882. prolific evangelist

  883. in the 19th century.

  884. He was actually

  885. converted to Christianity

  886. right here in Boston

  887. and there's a little

  888. forgotten plaque

  889. that nobody ever visits

  890. that commemorates

  891. where he was converted.

  892. I'll be happy

  893. to take you guys

  894. there one day

  895. if you want to see it.

  896. And after one of

  897. the evangelistic meetings

  898. of D.L. Moody

  899. there was a woman

  900. that approached him

  901. and confronted him

  902. saying,

  903. Mr. Moody

  904. I don't like

  905. the way you do evangelism

  906. and he replied

  907. ma'am

  908. how do you do it?

  909. Probably generally

  910. wanting to learn

  911. and see what she has

  912. to say

  913. and then she responded

  914. I don't.

  915. And then D.L. Moody

  916. responded

  917. I like my way

  918. of doing evangelism

  919. better than

  920. your way

  921. of not doing it.

  922. Brothers and sisters

  923. stop observing

  924. the wind

  925. and regarding

  926. the clouds

  927. let us sow

  928. in the morning

  929. let us sow

  930. in the evening

  931. because we don't know

  932. which one

  933. will bear fruit.

  934. Moving ahead

  935. verses 7 to 10

  936. teach us to rejoice

  937. in our youth.

  938. Note the repetition

  939. of the word rejoice

  940. in verse 8

  941. verse 9

  942. so if a person

  943. lives many years

  944. let him rejoice

  945. in them all.

  946. Rejoice

  947. oh young man

  948. in your youth

  949. and let your heart

  950. cheer you

  951. in the days

  952. of your youth.

  953. The verb rejoice

  954. and the noun form

  955. of that

  956. joy

  957. are key words

  958. that we have seen

  959. repeatedly

  960. throughout Ecclesiastes

  961. and especially

  962. in those

  963. carpe diem

  964. or the seize the day

  965. passages

  966. that are key

  967. for understanding

  968. this book

  969. that we've seen

  970. so far.

  971. And those passages

  972. have taught us

  973. to enjoy life.

  974. to relish

  975. the simple pleasures

  976. of life

  977. because these pleasures

  978. of life

  979. enjoyed within

  980. their proper boundaries

  981. given to us

  982. by God

  983. are meant

  984. to comfort us

  985. in the midst

  986. of the painful

  987. realities of life

  988. in this broken

  989. and fallen world.

  990. They are gifts

  991. from God

  992. in order to

  993. punctuate

  994. the pains

  995. in our lives

  996. with joy

  997. like flowers

  998. or ice cream

  999. that we bring

  1000. over to

  1001. an ailing friend

  1002. at the hospital.

  1003. Comfort

  1004. in the midst

  1005. of the pain

  1006. in the midst

  1007. of the suffering.

  1008. So light is sweet

  1009. it says

  1010. verse 7

  1011. and it is pleasant

  1012. for the eyes

  1013. to see the sun.

  1014. I don't think

  1015. I'm alone

  1016. in saying

  1017. that I enjoy

  1018. the sun.

  1019. You guys all enjoy

  1020. the sun.

  1021. We enjoyed

  1022. some unexpected

  1023. summer days

  1024. here in New England

  1025. fall this past week.

  1026. I think Friday

  1027. November 1st

  1028. we hit a high

  1029. of 79 degrees

  1030. which surpassed

  1031. the 1974 record

  1032. of 77 degrees.

  1033. Like sweetness

  1034. that delights

  1035. our taste buds.

  1036. The warmth

  1037. of light

  1038. on our skin

  1039. delights

  1040. our senses

  1041. does it not?

  1042. And we don't have

  1043. to enjoy

  1044. sunny days only.

  1045. There are days

  1046. to enjoy

  1047. in the winter too.

  1048. Some of us

  1049. enjoy the chill

  1050. of winter

  1051. when we step

  1052. outside

  1053. and feel

  1054. that cool

  1055. refreshing sensation

  1056. from head to toe.

  1057. Who knows

  1058. what I'm talking about?

  1059. You guys enjoy that?

  1060. Yeah?

  1061. I know Josh

  1062. enjoys walks out

  1063. in the cold

  1064. winter days.

  1065. Yeah,

  1066. I'm sure he's not alone.

  1067. And that

  1068. walk

  1069. in the fresh

  1070. fallen snow

  1071. and that

  1072. squeak

  1073. in the snow

  1074. that you hear

  1075. walk on ground

  1076. and nobody else

  1077. has stepped on.

  1078. How beautiful

  1079. is that?

  1080. Remember,

  1081. under the sun

  1082. is a phrase

  1083. that the preacher

  1084. of Achilles

  1085. Yastis has used

  1086. repeatedly

  1087. many times

  1088. to describe

  1089. our sinful

  1090. world

  1091. and our life

  1092. in this broken

  1093. and sinful world.

  1094. But if you're

  1095. seeing the sun,

  1096. then you're

  1097. at least alive.

  1098. And he's saying

  1099. enjoy life.

  1100. Enjoy the gifts

  1101. that come to you

  1102. wherever you find them.

1103. It says in verse 8,

  1104. so if a person

  1105. lives many years,

  1106. let him rejoice

  1107. in them all.

  1108. But let him remember

  1109. that the days

  1110. of darkness

  1111. will be many.

  1112. All that comes

  1113. is vanity.

  1114. Remember

  1115. is another key word

  1116. and it will occur

  1117. again in chapter 12

  1118. and reminds us here

  1119. of the two commands,

  1120. main commands

  1121. of Ecclesiastes.

  1122. Rejoice

  1123. or enjoy life

  1124. and remember.

  1125. Remember

  1126. the reality

  1127. of death

  1128. and reality

  1129. of our

  1130. creatureliness.

  1131. The joys of life

  1132. are not meant

  1133. to function

  1134. like opioids

  1135. that block

  1136. the pain signals

  1137. between the body

  1138. and the brain.

1139. We have an opioid crisis

  1140. in the country.

  1141. 130 people die

  1142. per day

  1143. because of opioid overdose.

  1144. People get addicted

  1145. to these

  1146. painkillers,

  1147. these opioids,

  1148. because it gives them

  1149. this sense

  1150. of well-being

  1151. and euphoria

  1152. and it helps them

  1153. to escape

  1154. to this alternate reality

  1155. and to run away

  1156. from the pains

  1157. of life.

  1158. But that's not

  1159. the counsel

  1160. of Ecclesiastes.

  1161. It doesn't tell us

  1162. to seek to escape

  1163. the realities of life.

  1164. No,

  1165. it faces us

  1166. front and center

  1167. with the reality

  1168. of life

  1169. and reality of death

  1170. and the reality

  1171. of suffering

  1172. and evil

  1173. in this world

  1174. and then tells us

  1175. in the midst

  1176. of that

  1177. to enjoy life.

  1178. to have the humility

  1179. and the fear

  1180. of God

  1181. to have the freedom

  1182. of insignificance

  1183. to be able

  1184. to enjoy

  1185. the simple gifts

  1186. and the pleasures

  1187. of life.

  1188. It's only,

  1189. in fact,

  1190. it's only when

  1191. we are staring

  1192. death in the face

  1193. that we learn

  1194. humility

  1195. and the freedom

  1196. of insignificance

  1197. so that we are

  1198. released from

  1199. the shackles

  1200. of illusions

  1201. of godness

  1202. and the shackles

  1203. of profit

  1204. and performance

  1205. in life

  1206. so that we can

  1207. actually enjoy life.

  1208. Ecclesiastes

  1209. has taught us

  1210. to number our days

  1211. and to remember

  1212. our impending death

  1213. over and over again

  1214. but have you

  1215. really reckoned

  1216. with your own mortality?

  1217. 19th century

  1218. English writer

  1219. William Hazlitt

  1220. wrote an essay

  1221. that captures

  1222. what it's like

  1223. to be young

  1224. versus what it's like

  1225. to be old

  1226. and this is

1227. what he has to say

  1228. about death

  1229. and old age

  1230. to the young.

  1231. He says

  1232. that to the young

  1233. words like death

  1234. and old age

  1235. are words

  1236. without meaning.

  1237. They are merely

  1238. a dream

  1239. of fiction

  1240. and life

  1241. is a delightful

  1242. journey

  1243. with no end

  1244. in sight

  1245. to prospect

  1246. after prospect.

  1247. To be young

  1248. he writes

  1249. is to be

  1250. as one

  1251. of the immortals.

  1252. I think

  1253. John Calvin

  1254. will concur

  1255. with this

  1256. assessment

  1257. because he writes

  1258. in the Institutes

  1259. of Christian Religion

  1260. that human life

  1261. is like smoke

  1262. or shadow

  1263. that human life

  1264. is like smoke

  1265. or shadow

  1266. is not only obvious

  1267. to the learned

  1268. but even ordinary

  1269. folk have

  1270. no proverb

  1271. more commonplace

  1272. than this.

  1273. But there is

  1274. almost nothing

  1275. that we regard

  1276. more negligently

  1277. or remember less

  1278. for we undertake

  1279. all things

  1280. as if we were

  1281. establishing

  1282. immortality

  1283. for ourselves

  1284. on earth.

  1285. If some corpse

  1286. is being buried

  1287. or we walk

  1288. among graves

  1289. because the likeness

  1290. of death

  1291. then meets our eyes

  1292. we I confess

  1293. philosophize

  1294. brilliantly

  1295. concerning the vanity

  1296. of this life.

  1297. Yet even this

  1298. we do not do

  1299. consistently

  1300. for often

  1301. all these things

  1302. affect us

  1303. not one bit.

  1304. But when it happens

  1305. our philosophy

  1306. is for the moment

  1307. it vanishes

  1308. as soon as we

  1309. turn our backs

  1310. and leaves not

  1311. a trace

  1312. of remembrance

  1313. behind it.

  1314. In the end

  1315. like applause

  1316. in the theater

  1317. for some pleasing

  1318. spectacle

  1319. it evaporates.

  1320. Forgetful not only

  1321. of death

  1322. but also of mortality

  1323. itself

  1324. as if no inkling

  1325. of it had ever

  1326. reached us

  1327. we return to our

  1328. thoughtless assurance

  1329. of earthly immortality.

  1330. The thought

  1331. of perpetuity

  1332. nonetheless

  1333. remains fixed

  1334. in our minds.

  1335. I only have

  1336. two weeks left

  1337. this Sunday

  1338. and next Sunday

  1339. in Ecclesiastes

  1340. to really get

  1341. through to you

  1342. about this.

  1343. Don't be reminded

  1344. of death

  1345. during Sunday worship

  1346. only to let it

  1347. affect your life

  1348. not one bit.

  1349. If we can gain

  1350. this wisdom now

  1351. while we're still young

  1352. then we can

  1353. truly enjoy life

  1354. and rejoice

  1355. in our youth

  1356. as gifts

  1357. from God.

  1358. Verse 9

  1359. continues this thought

  1360. rejoice

  1361. oh young man

  1362. in your youth

  1363. and let your heart

  1364. cheer you

  1365. in the days

  1366. of your youth

  1367. walk in the ways

  1368. of your heart

  1369. and the side

  1370. of your eyes

  1371. but know that

  1372. for all these things

  1373. God will bring you

  1374. into judgment.

  1375. Walking in the ways

  1376. of your heart

  1377. and the side

  1378. of your eyes

  1379. are different ways

  1380. to speak of

  1381. enjoying life.

  1382. Sometimes in Ecclesiastes

1383. the side of the eyes

  1384. is a symbol

  1385. for wisdom

  1386. for example

  1387. Ecclesiastes 2.14

  1388. and 6.9

  1389. but in other places

  1390. eye represents

  1391. the seed

  1392. of human desire.

  1393. So for example

  1394. Ecclesiastes 2.10

  1395. says whatever

  1396. my eyes desired

  1397. I did not keep

  1398. from them

  1399. or Ecclesiastes 4.8

  1400. his eyes

  1401. are never satisfied

  1402. with riches.

  1403. Earlier verse 7

  1404. spoke of how

  1405. it is pleasant

  1406. for the eyes

  1407. to see the sun

  1408. so similarly

  1409. eyes here

  1410. represents the seed

  1411. of desire.

  1412. Heart is similar

  1413. it's representing

  1414. the human capacity

  1415. to rejoice

  1416. and to enjoy

  1417. the things in life.

  1418. So Ecclesiastes 5.20

  1419. says if a man

  1420. enjoys the gifts

  1421. of God in life

  1422. God keeps him

  1423. occupied with joy

  1424. in his heart.

  1425. So the preacher

  1426. is telling us

  1427. in verse 9

  1428. to enjoy life

  1429. to rejoice

  1430. in the simple pleasures

  1431. that God gives.

  1432. Let them cheer

  1433. your heart

  1434. and let them

  1435. delight your eyes

  1436. and satisfy your eyes.

  1437. And of course

  1438. this doesn't mean

  1439. that we should indulge

  1440. in sinful pleasures

  1441. which is why

  1442. there's an important

  1443. caveat here

  1444. but know

  1445. that for all

  1446. these things

  1447. God will bring you

  1448. into judgment.

  1449. We will be judged

  1450. for our indulgence

  1451. in sinful pleasures

  1452. as well as

  1453. for our prideful refusal

  1454. to enjoy

  1455. the gifts of God

  1456. in life.

  1457. Verse 10

  1458. says remove

  1459. vexation

  1460. from your heart

  1461. and put away

  1462. pain from your body

  1463. for youth

  1464. and the dawn

  1465. of life

  1466. are vanity.

  1467. This verse

  1468. brings into relief

  1469. this fascinating nuance

  1470. and layers of depth

  1471. in this book

  1472. of Ecclesiastes.

  1473. Interestingly enough

  1474. the word vexation

1475. here is the same word

  1476. that was used

  1477. in Ecclesiastes 1.18

  1478. where it says

  1479. in much wisdom

  1480. is much vexation

  1481. and he who increases

  1482. knowledge

  1483. increases sorrow

  1484. and in Ecclesiastes 7.3

  1485. it says

  1486. sorrow is better

  1487. than laughter

  1488. for by sadness

  1489. of faith

  1490. the heart

  1491. is made glad

  1492. and there

  1493. that word

  1494. translated sorrow

1495. is the same Hebrew word

  1496. translated vexation

  1497. here.

1498. So on the one hand

  1499. wisdom

  1500. brings vexation

  1501. and we're supposed

  1502. to grow in wisdom

  1503. by becoming

  1504. acquainted with

  1505. sorrows

  1506. and vexation

  1507. and death

  1508. by remembering

  1509. our finitude

  1510. by remembering

  1511. that the days

  1512. of darkness

  1513. in life

  1514. will be many

  1515. in this fallen world

1516. but on the other hand

  1517. we are supposed

  1518. to remove vexation

  1519. from our hearts

  1520. and put away

  1521. pain from our bodies

  1522. for youth

  1523. and the dawn

  1524. of life

  1525. are vanity

  1526. because life

  1527. is short

  1528. and youth

  1529. is but a breath

  1530. so these two truths

  1531. are held in tension

  1532. all throughout

  1533. the book of Ecclesiastes

1534. we are to be wise

  1535. and acquainted

  1536. with sorrow

  1537. and to number

  1538. our days

  1539. but we also

  1540. are not supposed

  1541. to become gloomy

  1542. or sullen

  1543. or depressed

  1544. always preoccupied

  1545. with the brokenness

  1546. of the world

  1547. instead we are

  1548. to rejoice

  1549. in the gifts

  1550. of life

  1551. rejoice in our youth

  1552. and remember

  1553. our creator

  1554. and our creatureliness

  1555. are you rejoicing

  1556. in your youth

  1557. now this doesn't mean

  1558. that if you're old

  1559. you can't enjoy life

1560. it said in verse 8

  1561. so if a person

  1562. lives many years

  1563. let him rejoice

  1564. in them all

  1565. so yes

  1566. even when you're old

  1567. there are days

  1568. you should enjoy

  1569. gifts from God

  1570. that you should enjoy

  1571. however

  1572. there are particular joys

1573. that you get to enjoy

  1574. while you're still

  1575. in your youth

  1576. enjoy the health

  1577. and strength

  1578. of your body

  1579. while you still can

1580. go out for a run

  1581. go play some basketball

1582. go throw some frisbee around

  1583. while your joints

  1584. can still handle

  1585. all the jumping

  1586. and cutting

  1587. across the field

  1588. enjoy the beauty

  1589. of youth

  1590. the tight skin

  1591. that is not yet

  1592. wrinkled and sagging

  1593. and thank God

  1594. for it

  1595. if you're young

  1596. and married

  1597. have kids

  1598. while you still can

  1599. and enjoy

  1600. watching them grow up

  1601. because soon

  1602. you won't be able

  1603. to have them anymore

  1604. in Deuteronomy 28

  1605. 45-47

  1606. Moses says this

  1607. to the Israelites

  1608. all these curses

  1609. shall come upon you

  1610. and pursue you

  1611. and overtake you

  1612. till you are destroyed

  1613. because you did not

  1614. obey the voice

1615. of the Lord your God

  1616. to keep his commandments

  1617. and his statutes

  1618. that he commanded you

  1619. because you did not

1620. serve the Lord your God

  1621. with joyfulness

  1622. and gladness of heart

  1623. because of the abundance

  1624. of all things

  1625. what led the Israelites

  1626. into their unfaithfulness

  1627. to God

  1628. and into their disobedience

  1629. to the Lord's commands

  1630. what caused that

1631. what was at the root

  1632. of that

  1633. a lack of joyfulness

  1634. and gladness of heart

  1635. because of the abundance

  1636. of all things

  1637. because joy

  1638. and gladness

  1639. and the abundance

  1640. of all things

1641. that God has given us

  1642. this joy

  1643. and gratitude

  1644. they fortify our hearts

  1645. from the temptation

  1646. to think

1647. that we'd be better off

  1648. apart from God

1649. that we can find things

1650. that are better for us

  1651. than what God

  1652. is offering

  1653. that we can find

  1654. more joys

  1655. in the forbidden things

  1656. than in the things

  1657. that God

  1658. has graciously given

  1659. that's how all

  1660. broken relationships

  1661. with God begin

  1662. how did the serpent

  1663. tempt Eve

  1664. in Genesis 3

  1665. did God

  1666. actually say

  1667. you shall not eat

  1668. of any tree

  1669. in the garden

  1670. in reality

  1671. God said to Adam

  1672. in Genesis 2

  1673. 16 and 17

  1674. you may surely eat

  1675. of every tree

  1676. in the garden

  1677. but of the tree

  1678. of the knowledge

  1679. of good and evil

  1680. you shall not eat

  1681. for in the day

1682. that you eat of it

  1683. you shall surely die

  1684. Satan twists

  1685. that generous gift

  1686. from God

  1687. and while tempting Eve

1688. to eat of the one tree

  1689. that God has forgiven

  1690. he asks her

  1691. did God actually say

  1692. you cannot eat

  1693. of any tree

  1694. in the garden

  1695. he's warping

  1696. Adam and Eve's

  1697. perception of God

  1698. oh he is

  1699. withholding something

  1700. good from you

  1701. he's stingy

  1702. he's not generous

  1703. he's not good

1704. he doesn't really love you

  1705. if you find yourself

  1706. full of grumbling

  1707. toward God

  1708. rather than gratitude

  1709. toward God

1710. if you feel that God

  1711. is withholding

  1712. good things from you

  1713. then you're in

  1714. greater danger

  1715. than you realize

  1716. greater spiritual danger

  1717. than you realize

  1718. this is why

  1719. it's so important

  1720. that we rejoice

  1721. in our youth

  1722. and enjoy

  1723. the simple pleasures

  1724. of life

  1725. as gifts

  1726. from our generous God

  1727. Pastor Corey Whitmer

  1728. was a study assistant

  1729. to his uncle

  1730. John Stott

  1731. John Stott

  1732. if you don't know

  1733. about him

  1734. was a very influential

  1735. 20th century

  1736. Christian leader

  1737. pastor and theologian

  1738. and in a book

  1739. Whitmer

  1740. recounts

  1741. an interaction

  1742. that he had

  1743. with Stott

  1744. that was particularly

  1745. impactful for him

  1746. he said

  1747. every morning

  1748. at 11 a.m. sharp

  1749. I would bring him

  1750. a cup of coffee

  1751. I would find him

  1752. hunched over

  1753. some letter

  1754. or manuscript

  1755. at his desk

  1756. consumed with the work

  1757. before him

  1758. putting his unparalleled

  1759. powers of concentration

  1760. to whatever task

  1761. was at hand

1762. not wanting to disturb him

  1763. I would quietly

  1764. set the cup

  1765. and saucer

1766. adjacent to his right hand

  1767. and often times

  1768. he would mumble

  1769. a barely audible

  1770. word of thanks

  1771. I'm not worthy

  1772. initially

  1773. I thought this comment

  1774. was amusing

1775. but after a few months

  1776. I began to find

  1777. it slightly bothersome

  1778. how could someone

  1779. pronounce himself

  1780. unworthy

  1781. of an acidic cup

  1782. of instant coffee

  1783. one morning

  1784. I was feeling

  1785. a little cheeky

  1786. and when Uncle John

  1787. mumbled his usual expression

  1788. I'm not worthy

  1789. I quipped back

  1790. oh sure you are

  1791. Uncle John stopped

1792. and I saw the powerful

  1793. magnetic look

  1794. of his concentration

  1795. ease from the papers

  1796. before him

  1797. he slowly raised

  1798. his gaze

  1799. and with a look

  1800. of immense seriousness

  1801. yet boyish playfulness

  1802. he responded

  1803. you haven't got

  1804. your theology

  1805. of grace right

  1806. I laughed

  1807. I grinned awkwardly

  1808. and then said

  1809. it's only a cup

  1810. of coffee Uncle John

1811. and as I turned around

  1812. and headed back

  1813. into the kitchen

  1814. I heard him mutter

  1815. it's just the thin

  1816. end of the wedge

  1817. what does it mean

  1818. by that

  1819. a wedge

  1820. is a tool

  1821. made of wood

  1822. and iron

  1823. it tapers off

1824. into a very thin edge

  1825. right

  1826. and that thin edge

  1827. is what you

  1828. put inside

  1829. a crevice

  1830. a small gap

  1831. and then once

  1832. that thin edge

  1833. is in

  1834. you can hammer

  1835. that wedge in

  1836. and that the larger

  1837. bigger part

  1838. goes in

1839. along with that thin edge

1840. that's already been wedged in

  1841. and it breaks apart

  1842. logs

  1843. and even rocks

  1844. what he's saying is

  1845. if I don't appreciate

  1846. the small things

  1847. God has given me

  1848. and I'm not grateful

  1849. and thankful

  1850. to God for them

  1851. that's the thin end

  1852. of the wedge

  1853. and soon

  1854. larger doubts

  1855. larger grumbling

  1856. and larger

  1857. problems

  1858. in your perception

  1859. of God

  1860. will be driven in

1861. so I want to challenge you

  1862. with the simple pleasures

  1863. of life

  1864. maybe sit

1865. sit with it this week

  1866. say

  1867. I'm not worthy

  1868. thank you God

  1869. thank you God

  1870. thank you God

  1871. that I

1872. get to hug my kids

  1873. thank you God

1874. that you have given me

  1875. food to eat

  1876. thank you God

1877. that I can walk around

  1878. on two limbs

  1879. I'm not worthy

  1880. knowing that life

  1881. is but a breath

  1882. we should rejoice

  1883. in our youth

  1884. rejoicing in our youth

  1885. is particularly important

  1886. because death

1887. is quick on our heels

1888. and we won't be able

1889. to rejoice in our youth

  1890. anymore when we're older

  1891. that brings me

  1892. to my final point

  1893. chapter 12

  1894. verses 1 to 8

  1895. remember your creator

  1896. remembering our creator

  1897. means remembering

1898. that God is the creator

1899. and that we are creatures

  1900. as I've been saying

  1901. that God is infinite

1902. and that we are finite

1903. it says in chapter 12

  1904. verse 1

  1905. remember also your creator

1906. in the days of your youth

1907. before the evil days come

1908. and the years draw near

1909. of which you will say

1910. I have no pleasure in them

1911. if we get to live

  1912. until we are old

1913. then there will come days

  1914. when pleasure

1915. will be hard to come by

  1916. there are three clauses

  1917. in this paragraph

  1918. that all begin

  1919. with the word before

  1920. verse 1

1921. before the evil days come

  1922. verse 2

  1923. before the sun

  1924. and the light

  1925. and the moon

  1926. and the stars

  1927. are darkened

  1928. verse 6

  1929. before the silver cord

  1930. is snapped

  1931. or the golden bowl

  1932. is broken

  1933. because of this

  1934. parallel structure

1935. I think all of the

  1936. vivid images

  1937. of this section

  1938. are meant to be

  1939. a picture of aging

  1940. and approaching death

  1941. and it's warning us

  1942. before that time comes

  1943. learn to enjoy life

  1944. and remember your creator

  1945. the first image

  1946. is in verse 2

  1947. before the sun

  1948. and the light

  1949. and the moon

  1950. and the stars

  1951. are darkened

  1952. and the clouds

  1953. return after the rain

  1954. it's a moving image

  1955. we always count

  1956. don't we

  1957. on the light

  1958. the sun

  1959. and the moon

  1960. and the stars

  1961. we always expect

  1962. it to be there

  1963. when we need them

  1964. but imagine one day

  1965. when that light fails

1966. how tragic that would be

  1967. what a gaping hole

  1968. that would leave

  1969. in your daily experience

1970. that's what old age is like

1971. things that you used to count

  1972. are not there anymore

1973. your mind is not as sharp

1974. as it used to be

  1975. your eyes are dimmer

1976. than they used to be

  1977. you can't move around

  1978. like you used to

  1979. everything seems darker

  1980. and picture this

  1981. the clouds return

  1982. after the rain

  1983. normally we expect clouds

  1984. to part after rain

1985. to give way to a clear

  1986. sunny day

  1987. but it says here

  1988. the clouds return

  1989. after the rain

  1990. even after the rain

1991. there are more rain clouds

  1992. looming above

1993. think about it this way

1994. when kids trip and fall

  1995. they bounce right back

  1996. right

1997. I mean our kids are falling

  1998. all over the place

  1999. all the time

  2000. right

  2001. like oh he

  2002. okay you fell

  2003. okay that's fine

  2004. we just move on

  2005. right usually

  2006. I mean

  2007. at worst there's a little scrape

2008. and a band-aid takes care of it

  2009. right

  2010. their bodies are strong

  2011. and young and light

  2012. they heal quickly

  2013. they bounce right back

2014. but then have you heard

  2015. of elderly people falling

  2016. when you hear that

  2017. an elderly person's fallen

  2018. that's not a little trip

  2019. it could be fatal

  2020. because their bodies

  2021. are not light

2022. and young and spry anymore

  2023. they're heavy

  2024. they're weak

2025. they can't break their fall

  2026. they can't recover

  2027. after they get hurt

  2028. after the rain

  2029. more clouds

  2030. when you're young

  2031. time heals

  2032. when you're old

  2033. time kills

2034. if we get to live

  2035. to old age

2036. there will be a day

  2037. when we

  2038. lie down

  2039. on the bed

2040. and then we won't be able

  2041. to get up anymore

2042. and then in verses 3 to 5

  2043. the preacher compares

  2044. aging

  2045. to the sad decline

2046. of a formerly vibrant city

  2047. in the day

  2048. when the keepers

  2049. of the house

  2050. tremble

  2051. and the strong men

  2052. are bent

  2053. and the grinders

  2054. seize

  2055. because they are few

  2056. and those who look

  2057. through the windows

  2058. are dimmed

  2059. servants who are supposed

  2060. to be the keepers

  2061. of the house

  2062. tremble

  2063. strong men

  2064. who should be

  2065. standing erect

  2066. in guarding the city

  2067. are bent over

  2068. grinders

  2069. women who work

  2070. at the mill

  2071. to grind food

  2072. the mill

  2073. they are not

  2074. there's not enough

  2075. for them to continue

  2076. to labor

  2077. so they seize

  2078. because they are few

  2079. those who look

  2080. through the windows

  2081. are dimmed

  2082. looking through a window

  2083. is an image

  2084. it's a picture

  2085. of hope

  2086. and expectation

  2087. but the hope

  2088. has dimmed

  2089. expectations

  2090. are dimmed

  2091. for those who look

  2092. through the window

  2093. the doors

  2094. on the street

  2095. are shut

  2096. when the sound

  2097. of the grinding

  2098. is low

  2099. and one rises up

  2100. at the sound

  2101. of a bird

  2102. and all the daughters

  2103. of song

  2104. are brought low

  2105. they are afraid

  2106. also what is high

  2107. and terrors

  2108. are in the way

  2109. the almond tree

  2110. blossoms

  2111. the grasshoppers

  2112. drag itself along

  2113. and desire fails

  2114. the streets

  2115. of the city

  2116. are deserted

  2117. and the doors

  2118. on the street

  2119. for that reason

  2120. are shut

  2121. with the sound

  2122. of the grinding

  2123. low

  2124. the city

  2125. is so eerily quiet

  2126. that even

  2127. the sound

  2128. of the fluttering

  2129. of a bird

  2130. startles you

  2131. and wakes you up

  2132. the daughters

  2133. of song

  2134. who used to sing

  2135. songs of joy

  2136. are brought low

  2137. there's also

2138. fear of what is high

  2139. and terrors

  2140. are in the way

  2141. usually enemy forces

  2142. invade from high

  2143. places

  2144. down

  2145. so this is speaking

  2146. of fear

  2147. of disaster

  2148. looming disaster

  2149. not only

  2150. are these

  2151. the city

  2152. that desolate

  2153. they're

  2154. they're gripped

  2155. with fear

  2156. and that's

  2157. the meaning

  2158. of the almond

  2159. tree blossoms

  2160. almond tree

  2161. is a symbol

  2162. of coming

  2163. judgment

  2164. in Jeremiah 1

  2165. 9-12

  2166. the grasshopper

  2167. known for

  2168. hopping

  2169. on its hind legs

  2170. drags itself

  2171. along

  2172. and desire

  2173. fails

  2174. remember

  2175. that this image

  2176. of a desolate

  2177. city

  2178. is meant

  2179. to be a picture

  2180. of old age

  2181. and approaching

  2182. death

  2183. so there's

  2184. a long history

  2185. of interpretation

  2186. that says

  2187. that trembling

  2188. keepers of the house

  2189. represent our

  2190. shriveled hands

  2191. that tremble

  2192. with old age

  2193. and that the

  2194. strong men

  2195. who are bent

  2196. over

  2197. represent our

  2198. bent backs

  2199. in old age

  2200. and that the

  2201. grinder is seizing

  2202. because they are

  2203. a few

  2204. represent our

  2205. inability to

  2206. grind food

  2207. down with our

  2208. teeth in old age

  2209. because they are

  2210. so few

  2211. and that the

  2212. dimming of those

  2213. who look through

  2214. the windows

  2215. represent dimming

  2216. of our eyesight

  2217. in old age

  2218. that the doors

  2219. of the street

  2220. being shut

  2221. and the sound

  2222. of the grinding

  2223. being low

  2224. represent the doors

  2225. of our ears

  2226. becoming hard

  2227. of hearing

  2228. in old age

  2229. the almond tree

  2230. blossom

  2231. represent our

  2232. hairs

  2233. turning white

  2234. and hoary

  2235. the grasshopper

  2236. that drags itself

  2237. along

  2238. represent our

  2239. legs

  2240. that are weak

  2241. it's not spry

  2242. anymore

  2243. and then you

  2244. shuffle

  2245. and waddle

  2246. slowly

  2247. desire failing

  2248. might represent

  2249. the impotency

  2250. of old age

  2251. it's a sad

  2252. forlorn picture

  2253. the images

  2254. of verse 6

  2255. get the same

  2256. idea

  2257. before the silver

  2258. cord is snapped

  2259. or the golden

  2260. bowl is broken

  2261. or the pitcher

  2262. is shattered

  2263. at the fountain

  2264. or the wheel

  2265. broken at the

  2266. cistern

  2267. the snapping

  2268. silver cord

  2269. and the broken

  2270. golden bowl

  2271. may be a picture

  2272. of a golden bowl

  2273. of a lampstand

  2274. that is hung up

  2275. on a silver cord

  2276. and one day

  2277. the cord

  2278. that was hanging

  2279. by a thread

  2280. snaps

  2281. and the bowl

  2282. falls

  2283. and shatters

  2284. or when

  2285. you bring

  2286. a pitcher

  2287. to draw water

  2288. with at the well

  2289. and you bring

  2290. a wagon

  2291. with it

  2292. let's say

  2293. and then the pitcher

  2294. breaks

  2295. and the wagon

  2296. wheel breaks

  2297. and you can

  2298. no longer

  2299. take water

  2300. draw water

  2301. and take it

  2302. back home

  2303. that's what

  2304. our aging bodies

  2305. are like

  2306. one day

  2307. they wear out

  2308. and break

  2309. and you can't

  2310. do anymore

  2311. what you used

  2312. to be able

  2313. to do

  2314. life ebbs

  2315. away from us

  2316. we know

  2317. that this section

  2318. is about old age

  2319. and death

  2320. because verse 5

  2321. and verse 7

  2322. tell us explicitly

  2323. verse 5

  2324. because man is going

  2325. to his eternal home

  2326. and the mourners

  2327. go about the streets

  2328. verse 7 says

  2329. and the dust

  2330. returns to the earth

  2331. as it was

  2332. and the spirit

  2333. returns to God

  2334. who gave it

  2335. this is one

  2336. of the most

  2337. important things

  2338. that we can know

  2339. about ourselves

  2340. and remember

  2341. as we live

  2342. that we are

  2343. creatures of dust

  2344. and that God

  2345. is the creator

  2346. French philosopher

  2347. Jacques Ellul

  2348. he comments

  2349. on this verse

  2350. in this way

  2351. in his book

  2352. on Ecclesiastes

  2353. remember your creator

  2354. only here

  2355. does the preacher

  2356. call God

  2357. by this name

  2358. and he does

  2359. so by design

  2360. you may consider

  2361. yourself autonomous

  2362. but you are

  2363. incapable of knowing

  2364. what should be done

  2365. incapable of knowing

  2366. what wisdom is

  2367. you are a creature

  2368. all the evils

  2369. and I

  2370. and I

  2371. and I choose

  2372. my words carefully

  2373. all the evils

  2374. of the world

  2375. stem from

  2376. our taking

  2377. ourselves

  2378. to be

  2379. the creator

  2380. if we remember

  2381. our creator

  2382. then we remember

  2383. that we are creatures

  2384. then we know

2385. that it is our law

  2386. to serve him

2387. not the other way around

  2388. and that means

  2389. we are accountable

  2390. to him

  2391. not other way around

  2392. and that means

  2393. he is the center

  2394. of the universe

  2395. we are not

  2396. we are just

  2397. satellites orbiting

  2398. around him

  2399. if we remember

  2400. our creator

  2401. and that we are

  2402. merely creatures

  2403. then we know

  2404. that we are not

  2405. going to live forever

  2406. that our bodies

  2407. will return to dust

  2408. and our spirits

  2409. will return to God

  2410. who gave

  2411. but we so often

  2412. fail to live

  2413. this way

  2414. don't we

  2415. we live like

  2416. masters of our

  2417. own fate

  2418. we live like

  2419. we can control

  2420. life

  2421. we live like

  2422. we are the creators

  2423. like little gods

  2424. running around

  2425. and we expect

  2426. God to do our

  2427. bidding

  2428. we expect God

  2429. to conform

  2430. to our preferences

  2431. that's what we

  2432. call sin

  2433. and the wages

  2434. of sin

  2435. is death

  2436. so how can we

  2437. have any hope

  2438. of that eternal

  2439. home

  2440. that the preacher

  2441. speaks of

  2442. how can we have

  2443. any hope

  2444. that we will

  2445. survive that

  2446. judgment

  2447. that he says

  2448. is coming

  2449. when we have

  2450. to give an

  2451. account to God

  2452. for all that

  2453. we do

  2454. in John

  2455. 14

  2456. 1-6

  2457. Jesus said

  2458. let not your

  2459. hearts be troubled

  2460. believe in God

  2461. believe also

  2462. in me

  2463. in my father's

  2464. house

  2465. are many rooms

  2466. if it were not

  2467. so

  2468. would I have

  2469. told you

  2470. that I go

  2471. to prepare

  2472. a place

  2473. for you

  2474. and if I go

  2475. and prepare

  2476. a place

  2477. for you

  2478. I will come

  2479. again

  2480. and will

  2481. take you

  2482. to myself

  2483. that where

  2484. I am

  2485. you may be

  2486. also

  2487. and you know

  2488. the way

  2489. to where

  2490. I'm going

  2491. he's talking

  2492. about that

  2493. eternal home

  2494. that the preacher

  2495. speaks of

  2496. but then

  2497. his disciple

  2498. Thomas

  2499. objects

  2500. Lord

  2501. we don't

  2502. know

  2503. where you're

  2504. going

  2505. how can

  2506. we know

  2507. the way

  2508. and then

  2509. Jesus answers

  2510. I am

  2511. the way

  2512. the truth

  2513. and the life

  2514. no one

  2515. comes to

  2516. the father

  2517. except through

  2518. me

  2519. we have

  2520. all styled

  2521. ourselves

  2522. to be

  2523. these creators

  2524. these little

  2525. gods

  2526. living

  2527. for our

  2528. own will

  2529. for ourselves

  2530. instead of

  2531. worshiping

  2532. God

  2533. we have

  2534. sought

  2535. worship

  2536. for ourselves

  2537. and we

  2538. have

  2539. worshipped

  2540. creatures

  2541. rather than

  2542. worshipping

  2543. the creator

  2544. we have

  2545. all

  2546. sinned

  2547. in this

  2548. way

  2549. and the

  2550. amazing

  2551. thing is

  2552. God

  2553. instead of

  2554. doing what

  2555. we would

  2556. do in

  2557. this place

  2558. which is

  2559. to shove

  2560. us back

  2561. down and

  2562. put us

  2563. in our

  2564. place

  2565. he decides

  2566. that he'll

  2567. send his

  2568. only son

  2569. to earth

  2570. to take

  2571. the form

  2572. of a

  2573. creature

  2574. the creator

  2575. takes the

  2576. form of a

  2577. creature

  2578. the son

  2579. of God

  2580. becomes

  2581. son of

  2582. man

  2583. he lives

  2584. the life

  2585. of our

  2586. weakness

  2587. he lives

  2588. in our

  2589. life

  2590. this world

  2591. that is

  2592. broken

  2593. and fallen

  2594. he experiences

  2595. the futility

  2596. and the

  2597. vanity

  2598. of life

  2599. and then

  2600. he goes

  2601. to the

  2602. cross

  2603. so that

  2604. he could

  2605. die

  2606. for our

  2607. sins

  2608. for our

  2609. arrogant

  2610. presumption

  2611. of God's

  2612. place

  2613. so that

  2614. we might

  2615. be

  2616. forgiven

  2617. of our

  2618. sins

  2619. so that

  2620. we might

  2621. be able

  2622. really to

  2623. be exalted

  2624. with God

  2625. and reign

  2626. with him

  2627. forever

  2628. what kind

  2629. of mercy

  2630. is that

  2631. and so

  2632. we are to

  2633. live now

  2634. knowing that

  2635. our bodies

  2636. our outer

  2637. selves

  2638. are wasting

  2639. away as we

  2640. read earlier

  2641. in the assurance

  2642. of pardon

  2643. 2nd Corinthians

  2644. 4 and 5

  2645. but our

  2646. inner cells

  2647. are being

  2648. renewed

  2649. day by

  2650. day

  2651. a day

  2652. longer

  2653. in our

  2654. decaying

  2655. body

  2656. is a

  2657. day

  2658. closer

  2659. to our

  2660. eternal

  2661. home

  2662. let's

  2663. pray

  2664. father

  2665. really

  2666. teach us

  2667. to know

  2668. that we're

  2669. but a

  2670. breath

  2671. that our

  2672. life is

  2673. but a

  2674. breath

  2675. help us

  2676. not to

  2677. forget

  2678. this

  2679. in the

  2680. busyness

  2681. of life

  2682. and in the

  2683. distractions

  2684. of the

  2685. world

  2686. help us

  2687. to know

  2688. remember

  2689. you are

  2690. creator

  2691. and enable

  2692. us as we

  2693. do that

  2694. to rejoice

  2695. in our

  2696. youth

  2697. to enjoy

  2698. the life

  2699. you've

  2700. given

  2701. for your

  2702. glory

  2703. and for

  2704. our

  2705. good

  2706. in

  2707. Jesus
