  1. Listen, the Lord has stronger coffee for us and a better breakfast.

  2. So let's turn to 2 John, where we're going to continue our time in God's Word.

  3. And as you're turning to 2 John, I want to ask you guys a question.

  4. Speaking of food and beautiful things,

  5. have you ever had a meal that was just absolutely perfect?

  6. Have you ever seen a piece of art that you thought,

  7. right where this is, every line, every stroke, it's perfect.

  8. Perfect.

  9. Perfect.

  10. Just right.

  11. Friends, out of all the things in the world,

  12. in the whole of the world,

  13. nothing, nothing is more perfect than the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  14. Nothing is more just right.

  15. Nothing is more untouchably complete than what Jesus has already given us.

  16. And here's what we need to embrace as John takes a turn in the second letter.

  17. Here's what we need to embrace.

  18. That because the gospel is absolutely perfect,

  19. to subtract anything from it or add anything to it is destructive.

  20. And brothers and sisters, last night we had a good time around God's Word,

  21. thinking about the combustion of the right combination.

  22. This morning, on the flip side, we're going to look at the destruction of the wrong combination.

  23. So if you would, turn to 2 John with me again.

  24. And I think we're going to just read the whole letter.

  25. We're going to focus on verses 7 on for this morning.

  26. But I figure it's good for us to read the whole thing as we start out together.

  27. And friends, as we do, this truth is going to emerge to us.

  28. That as with love and truth, may they make us a people who protect and promote the very perfection of the gospel.

  29. Let's read 2 John in its entirety.

  30. The elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth.

  31. And not only I, but also all who know the truth,

  32. because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever.

  33. Father, grace, mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father,

  34. and from Jesus Christ the Father's Son, in truth and love.

  35. I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth,

  36. just as you were commanded by the Father.

  37. And now I ask you, dear lady, not as though I were writing you a new commandment,

  38. but the one we have had from the beginning, that we love one another.

  39. And this is love, that we walk according to His commandments.

  40. This is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning,

  41. so you should walk in it.

  42. For many deceivers have gone out into the world.

  43. Those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh,

  44. such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist.

  45. Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for,

  46. but may win a full reward.

  47. Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ

  48. does not have God.

  49. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.

  50. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching,

  51. do not receive him into your home or give him any greeting.

  52. For whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works.

  53. Though I have much to write to you,

  54. I would rather not use paper and ink.

  55. Instead, I hope to come to you and talk face to face,

  56. so that our joy may be complete.

  57. The children of your elect sister greet you.

  58. Let's pray.

  59. Father, continue your work among us through these words.

  60. And Lord, reaffirm in our hearts the perfection of Jesus Christ

  61. and his gospel, we pray.

  62. In Jesus' name, so be it.

  63. All right, so for this morning,

  64. we're going to consider John's turning argument in three points.

  65. So our first point, we're basing out of verse seven,

  66. and that's destruction through subtraction.

  67. And you could pick it up when we read the whole letter.

  68. I mean, last night, weren't his words so warm?

  69. But now those words turn to words of warning,

  70. and they ought to get our attention,

  71. and we see what he's calling for here.

  72. Friends, what we need to embrace

  73. is if Jesus and his gospel

  74. are the love and truth

  75. that are to be the life and warmth

  76. of every believer and every church,

  77. that if that's the case,

  78. if Jesus, in his perfection,

  79. in his truthfulness and love,

  80. if they are threatened,

  81. everything we hold dear is threatened.

  82. John wants to stress this,

  83. but it's coming out of his commitment

  84. to truth and love

  85. that there is a time to protect

  86. and promote what is absolutely perfect.

  87. Look at this in the beginning of verse seven.

  88. For many deceivers have gone out into the world.

  89. It's almost like a reverse Great Commission,

  90. where we're sent to take the gospel

  91. into the nations.

  92. Now as the gospel is going forward,

  93. the church has been around for some time

  94. at John's writing,

  95. but it's not only the gospel

  96. that has been going forward.

  97. As Jesus warned years before,

  98. wheat would always grow among the tares,

  99. and so as the truth and love

  100. of the gospel has gone out,

  101. so have deceptive and destructive lies.

  102. They've gone out into the world,

  103. and note this word, deceivers.

  104. What do deceivers do?

  105. Yeah.

  106. I mean, they don't show you the full thing, right?

  107. They're not like,

  108. well, this is the full package.

  109. This is what you're signing up for.

  110. Sign on the dotted line.

  111. They come with something that seems plausible,

  112. something even good,

  113. but you're being tricked.

  114. You're being swindled,

  115. and so we need to understand

  116. that this air that's going out,

  117. it's not always going to be obvious.

  118. It might be pervasive,

  119. but it might not pronounce itself

  120. as clearly as it ought to,

  121. and John wants the believers

  122. to be aware of this.

  123. Now, what exactly were they saying

  124. that was so wrong?

  125. What were they getting wrong about Jesus?

  126. John actually tells us,

  127. look at the next part in verse seven.

  128. Those who do not confess

  129. the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh.

  130. What are they denying?

  131. The incarnation.

  132. The incarnation.

  133. John is big on the incarnation,

  134. because frankly,

  135. the incarnation is a really big deal.

  136. This is not a doctrine we take out

  137. with the Christmas decorations

  138. around the holiday.

  139. Oh yeah, it's that time of the year

  140. we consider the incarnation.

  141. The incarnation is wonderful,

  142. so I don't have Sean's permission,

  143. but I hope this works.

  144. I want to take a little aside

  145. to just love on the incarnation

  146. for a moment here.

  147. That's not even really the point

  148. of the message,

  149. but if we're going to be a people

  150. that love the perfection of the gospel,

  151. let's just look at this aspect

  152. of the gospel for a moment.

  153. This aspect that in John's time

  154. was being threatened.

  155. Here's just three things

  156. that are just wonderful

  157. about the incarnation.

  158. First, the incarnation speaks

  159. to the nearness

  160. and likeness of God.

  161. Of all the things

  162. we need to know in life,

  163. it's that our God is near

  164. and not far.

  165. And not only do we need to know

  166. that God is near and not far,

  167. we need to know

  168. what God is like.

  169. And how are we going to know

  170. what God is like

  171. when we can't see His face

  172. and live?

  173. The incarnation

  174. answers these deep longings

  175. of our humanity

  176. more than anything else.

  177. Listen to John

  178. from John's gospel.

  179. And the word became flesh

  180. and dwelt among us.

  181. And we have seen His glory.

  182. In seeing Jesus,

  183. we've seen the glory

  184. of the Father

  185. and we have lived.

  186. Glory as of the only Son

  187. from the Father.

  188. Full.

  189. Full of grace and truth.

  190. And I'm going to just hop over

  191. to 1 John and read you

  192. the first three verses.

  193. These are wonderful.

  194. That which was from the beginning,

  195. which we have heard,

  196. which we have seen

  197. with our eyes,

  198. which we have looked upon

  199. and have touched

  200. with our hands

  201. concerning the word of life.

  202. The life was made manifest.

  203. That's through the incarnation.

  204. And we have seen it

  205. and testified to it

  206. and proclaimed to you

  207. the eternal life

  208. which was with the Father

  209. and was made manifest to us.

  210. That which we have seen

  211. and heard,

  212. we proclaim also to you

  213. so that you may have fellowship

  214. with us.

  215. And indeed,

  216. our fellowship is with the Father

  217. and with His Son,

  218. Jesus Christ.

  219. Oh my goodness.

  220. What we have in the incarnation.

  221. These realities of God's nearness

  222. and knowing what God is like

  223. is the basis for our community.

  224. But there's more than that

  225. with the incarnation.

  226. The incarnation speaks

  227. to our substitute and mediator.

  228. Consider this.

  229. 1 Timothy 2.

  230. For there is one God

  231. and there is one mediator

  232. between God and men.

  233. The man, Christ Jesus.

  234. Romans 5.

  235. As for by one man's disobedience,

  236. the first Adam,

  237. the many were made sinners.

  238. So by one man's obedience,

  239. the second Adam,

  240. Jesus Christ,

  241. the many will be made righteous.

  242. Consider the Heidelberg Catechism,

  243. the 16th question.

  244. Why must He,

  245. why must Jesus

  246. be a true

  247. and righteous man?

  248. He must be a true man

  249. because the justice of God

  250. requires the same human nature

  251. which has sinned

  252. should pay for sin.

  253. He must be a righteous man

  254. because one who is himself a sinner,

  255. he cannot pay for others.

  256. There is no gospel

  257. without the incarnation.

  258. I need Jesus to be truly man

  259. so that His sinless life

  260. can cover my sinful life.

  261. In order for this to be

  262. an authentic

  263. and acceptable sacrifice to God,

  264. Jesus Christ must be man.

  265. He must take on flesh.

  266. That makes this work.

  267. But He also must be God

  268. because if He were not

  269. and He were not sinless,

  270. His sacrifice could not atone

  271. for the sins of all the people

  272. who would believe in Him

  273. for all times.

  274. The incarnation is huge.

  275. One more, one more.

  276. And this is timely.

  277. This is timely.

  278. The incarnation speaks to the humility

  279. and glory of Jesus.

  280. How many of you see

  281. just such a rank lack

  282. of humility in our culture?

  283. Pride is elevated.

  284. How Jesus is so different

  285. than the world?

  286. Here in the incarnation,

  287. we see His humility

  288. and glory in a way that

  289. I don't know how we see

  290. anything more beautiful.

  291. Let me read it from Philippians 2.

  292. Though He was in the form of God.

  293. We even sang about this this morning.

  294. Did not count equality with God

  295. a thing to be grasped,

  296. but emptied Himself

  297. by taking the form of a servant,

  298. being born in the likeness

  299. of men, incarnation,

  300. and being found in human form,

  301. He humbled Himself

  302. by becoming obedient

  303. to the point of death,

  304. even death on a cross.

  305. Therefore,

  306. God has highly exalted Him

  307. and bestowed on Him

  308. the name that is above every name

  309. so that the name of Jesus

  310. every knee should bow

  311. in heaven and on earth

  312. and under the earth

  313. and every tongue confess

  314. that Jesus Christ is Lord

  315. to the glory of God the Father.

  316. Friends,

  317. this is not going away

  318. with our Christmas decorations.

  319. This is a truth

  320. we want to hang out all year

  321. and we cannot afford

  322. to lose it.

  323. So,

  324. thank you for letting me

  325. go off on the incarnation

  326. for a little bit.

  327. We're getting back on our tracks

  328. tracks with John's argument,

  329. but I just,

  330. I wanted to love on that

  331. together for a bit.

  332. Here's what we need to see.

  333. We don't know exactly

  334. how they were denying

  335. Jesus' incarnation

  336. in John's day.

  337. Most scholars,

  338. though,

  339. believe it had a Gnostic flavor,

  340. which they would have seen

  341. the body as bad

  342. or unimportant.

  343. So,

  344. they may have come

  345. with a subtraction like this.

  346. Oh,

  347. Jesus is too spiritual

  348. to have a body.

  349. Oh,

  350. Jesus is,

  351. his divinity,

  352. there's no way

  353. he could actually

  354. take on flesh.

  355. And you can see

  356. where the deception

  357. comes in,

  358. there's always going to be

  359. something that

  360. catches us a bit.

  361. But if we deny

  362. that he actually

  363. came in the flesh,

  364. look at all the perfection

  365. we are denied.

  366. All are grounds

  367. for truth

  368. and for love.

  369. And here's where John

  370. starts getting pretty serious.

  371. And you're going to see

  372. these turns he makes

  373. in 2nd and 3rd John.

  374. In this way,

  375. he's kind of like Gandalf.

  376. At first,

  377. you can think

  378. he's just this nice old guy

  379. that really knows

  380. how to smoke a pipe.

  381. And you're like,

  382. oh,

  383. nice Gandalf.

  384. Gandalf gets into

  385. a different gear

  386. when it's time for it.

  387. And we see that

  388. with the apostle of love.

  389. He can change a gear.

  390. So,

  391. what does John call

  392. this kind of subtraction?

  393. Read on in verse 7.

  394. Such a one

  395. is the deceiver

  396. and the antichrist.

  397. Whoa.

  398. Now,

  399. these are

  400. loaded

  401. accusations.

  402. And I don't want us

  403. to get lost in them.

  404. I want us to

  405. catch what John is saying.

  406. Who else is known

  407. as the deceiver?

  408. Satan.

  409. There is something

  410. very satanic

  411. about subtracting

  412. from the gospel.

  413. Then he says

  414. antichrist.

  415. Now,

  416. don't get into

  417. like Timothy mode

  418. where you're trying

  419. to think about

  420. the antichrist

  421. and figure out that.

  422. No,

  423. it's talking about

  424. a position.

  425. An antichrist

  426. position

  427. to be opposed

  428. or against.

  429. To subtract

  430. is to be satanic.

  431. To subtract

  432. is to be

  433. anti

  434. or against

  435. Christ.

  436. These things

  437. aren't,

  438. oh,

  439. that's a really

  440. creative thought

  441. that you have there

  442. about the incarnation.

  443. Yeah,

  444. maybe Jesus,

  445. no,

  446. no,

  447. no,

  448. no,

  449. no,

  450. no,

  451. no.

  452. That's satanic.

  453. That's antichrist.

  454. Now,

  455. you can nuance

  456. how you'll work

  457. that out

  458. in the community,

  459. but John,

  460. the apostle of love

  461. is being very clear

  462. in truth

  463. with this section.

  464. and it goes

  465. for any doctrine.

  466. We are looking

  467. at something

  468. that is

  469. completely

  470. perfect.

  471. Why would we

  472. think of taking

  473. anything away

  474. from it?

  475. Usually,

  476. that motivation

  477. is because

  478. we want to be

  479. more accepted

  480. by the people

  481. around us.

  482. We're tempted

  483. to edit

  484. the gospel

  485. that it might

  486. fit in our lives

  487. with less trouble.

  488. We'll get to that

  489. as we go.

  490. We have a second

  491. point to get to.

  492. Destruction

  493. through addition.

  494. This is where

  495. we look at

  496. verses 8

  497. and 9.

  498. Now,

  499. there's a difference

  500. between a hypothetical

  501. threat

  502. and an actual threat.

  503. The threat

  504. that John's

  505. talking about

  506. against the

  507. perfection

  508. of the gospel,

  509. it's actual.

  510. And it's actual

  511. for us too.

  512. And I want you

  513. to see this

  514. because this is

  515. the weight

  516. of verse 8

  517. that we're meant

  518. to feel.

  519. Watch yourselves.

  520. So that you

  521. may not lose

  522. what we have

  523. worked for

  524. but may win

  525. a full reward.

  526. Watch yourselves

  527. is in the plural

  528. imperative,

  529. which means

  530. it's a command

  531. for the whole

  532. community.

  533. John is saying

  534. to this

  535. unspecified church

  536. that he speaks

  537. about in such

  538. familial,

  539. warm terms,

  540. watch yourselves.

  541. Watch yourselves.

  542. we need to hear

  543. this as a command

  544. because the threat

  545. is real

  546. and active.

  547. And what we need

  548. to understand

  549. is that there

  550. could be a loss

  551. here.

  552. And indeed,

  553. there is a loss.

  554. This could,

  555. depending on how

  556. you understand the

  557. Greeks,

  558. speak of the

  559. laborer's loss

  560. or the listener's

  561. loss.

  562. But for us,

  563. to lose anything

  564. of the gospel

  565. is to lose

  566. the life

  567. and the truth

  568. that give us

  569. all the warmth

  570. and love we need.

  571. To lose this

  572. is to lose

  573. what matters.

  574. And the destruction

  575. goes on.

  576. How he describes

  577. this is very

  578. interesting.

  579. Look at verse 9

  580. with me.

  581. Everyone who

  582. goes on ahead

  583. and does not

  584. abide in the

  585. teaching of Christ

  586. does not

  587. have God.

  588. John's back

  589. to these metaphors.

  590. Very helpful

  591. here.

  592. Very helpful.

  593. Anyone who

  594. goes on

  595. ahead.

  596. What a picture

  597. for not just

  598. trying to destroy

  599. the gospel

  600. through subtraction,

  601. but addition.

  602. And I think

  603. this can actually

  604. be more tempting.

  605. I just need

  606. to add something

  607. to the gospel.

  608. It's like when

  609. your kids are

  610. on a hike

  611. and they go

  612. on ahead of you.

  613. It's not actually

  614. what you want

  615. because they're

  616. going outside

  617. of healthy

  618. and safe

  619. boundaries.

  620. But there seems

  621. to be a tolerance

  622. in the evangelical

  623. church for going

  624. on ahead.

  625. Meandering off,

  626. looking for more.

  627. But John uses

  628. another metaphor.

  629. We're not to

  630. wander off from it.

  631. We're not to go

  632. on ahead as though

  633. that were needed.

  634. We are to

  635. abide,

  636. John tells us,

  637. to find our life

  638. and our home

  639. and our place.

  640. To abide means

  641. to stay

  642. and build a life.

  643. Friends,

  644. the gospel

  645. is the perfection

  646. of God

  647. for us.

  648. Nothing can be

  649. taken from it.

  650. Nothing can be

  651. added to it

  652. without taking

  653. away from it.

  654. So remember

  655. that perfect meal?

  656. Well,

  657. if you added

  658. just one more

  659. dash

  660. of seasoning,

  661. it's no longer

  662. just right.

  663. One more stroke

  664. to a masterpiece,

  665. it's no longer

  666. a masterpiece.

  667. It's divine

  668. vandalism.

  669. And John is

  670. intolerant.

  671. The apostle of love

  672. is intolerant

  673. of these kind of

  674. threats to the gospel.

  675. He's warning

  676. the whole church

  677. to be watchful

  678. for these friends

  679. and that's

  680. so necessary

  681. for us.

  682. And I believe

  683. it starts

  684. with a discontentment

  685. in our own hearts.

  686. We become

  687. gospel bored.

  688. We tire

  689. of hearing it.

  690. That's a real symptom

  691. when someone

  692. talks about

  693. the gospel

  694. and your heart

  695. no longer

  696. alights to it.

  697. Now you may ask me,

  698. Andrew,

  699. is it realistic

  700. that I'll always

  701. have affection

  702. for the gospel?

  703. Is it realistic

  704. that who Jesus is

  705. and what he's done

  706. in all its perfection

  707. will always

  708. be captivating

  709. to me?

  710. Humanly,

  711. we are very weak.

  712. And I understand

  713. why and how

  714. we struggle.

  715. But when we

  716. actually think

  717. about what this is,

  718. we should never

  719. get over this.

  720. There is enough

  721. in this.

  722. And here's the deal.

  723. There is enough

  724. that we actually

  725. haven't plumbed.

  726. We don't need

  727. to go beyond.

  728. I don't need

  729. to take away

  730. from it

  731. or add to it.

  732. What it is,

  733. there is more

  734. for me to consider.

  735. There is more

  736. for us

  737. to ponder

  738. and dwell on.

  739. So if you feel

  740. those numbings

  741. coming in,

  742. the answer

  743. is not to go

  744. on ahead.

  745. And the answer

  746. is not to tailor

  747. it and cut it back

  748. so it fits better

  749. in your life

  750. is to behold

  751. the perfection

  752. and to live

  753. in that.

  754. The call,

  755. friends,

  756. here is not

  757. to add to the gospel

  758. but to abide in it.

  759. And I would ask you

  760. in your life,

  761. is the gospel

  762. the most sacred place?

  763. The most safe place?

  764. The most dear place?

  765. It's meant

  766. to be our place

  767. for life.

  768. And what are they

  769. strained from?

  770. It's the teaching

  771. of Christ.

  772. Did you see that

  773. in the text?

  774. Everyone who goes

  775. on ahead

  776. and does not abide

  777. in the teaching

  778. of Christ.

  779. I'm shorthanding

  780. that as the gospel

  781. but what that includes

  782. is teaching

  783. about Jesus

  784. and teaching

  785. from Jesus.

  786. Colossians calls us

  787. to let the word

  788. of Christ

  789. dwell in us richly.

  790. When Paul uses

  791. that language

  792. the word of Christ

  793. is probably

  794. a longer way

  795. of saying the gospel.

  796. Who Jesus is

  797. and what he's done

  798. that's meant

  799. to steep in you

  800. like a tea bag

  801. steeps in tea.

  802. And here we're called

  803. to abide in his teaching

  804. and that makes sense

  805. with what we learned

  806. last night.

  807. Friends,

  808. we must learn

  809. this life

  810. of abiding

  811. because the danger is

  812. when we don't

  813. we no longer

  814. have God

  815. John says.

  816. Does not have

  817. God

  818. or his exact

  819. words.

  820. Why is this?

  821. I think

  822. David Jackman

  823. says it well

  824. as soon as we

  825. leave the basis

  826. of God's revealed

  827. truth

  828. we begin to

  829. venture

  830. into unreality.

  831. I remember

  832. having

  833. a conversation

  834. with my aunt

  835. in the car

  836. and she asked me

  837. Andrew what do you

  838. think heaven

  839. is going to be like?

  840. And I go

  841. well Aunt Julie

  842. the Bible says

  843. no no no no no

  844. I didn't ask you

  845. what the Bible said

  846. what do you think

  847. heaven's going to be like?

  848. I'm like well

  849. Aunt Julie

  850. heaven's a real place

  851. like I don't get

  852. to make up

  853. what it is

  854. and isn't

  855. and we started

  856. having this conversation

  857. she's like well

  858. let me tell you

  859. what I think

  860. heaven is

  861. and she just

  862. goes into that

  863. that's a form

  864. of unreality.

  865. Anytime

  866. we say

  867. or make

  868. Jesus

  869. something that

  870. he's not

  871. we are no longer

  872. walking in the truth

  873. we're walking

  874. in unreality

  875. and what is the

  876. ground for all

  877. our fellowship

  878. and hope?

  879. It's in the truth

  880. of who Christ

  881. is

  882. unchanged

  883. unfiltered

  884. as it's been given

  885. from the Father

  886. to us.

  887. So

  888. that said

  889. this is where

  890. we're going to land

  891. on this

  892. third point.

  893. We don't just

  894. want to seek

  895. to protect this

  896. we want to promote

  897. this.

  898. We want to build

  899. up godly convictions

  900. and this is what

  901. John is calling

  902. his listeners

  903. to do here.

  904. This kind of

  905. conviction

  906. comes out of

  907. our care

  908. for the perfection

  909. of the gospel.

  910. Look at verses

  911. 10 and 11

  912. with me.

  913. If anyone

  914. comes to you

  915. and does not

  916. bring this teaching

  917. do not receive

  918. him into your house

  919. or give him

  920. any greeting

  921. for whoever

  922. greets him

  923. takes part

  924. in his wicked

  925. works.

  926. Now I will admit

  927. to you

  928. I have misunderstood

  929. and misapplied

  930. this for a long

  931. time.

  932. In the city

  933. we would get

  934. JWs

  935. Jehovah's Witnesses

  936. by the house

  937. all the time

  938. and I'd always

  939. talk to them

  940. on the steps

  941. never in the house

  942. because I wanted

  943. to be faithful

  944. to John

  945. you can't come

  946. in my house

  947. and I

  948. wouldn't say

  949. what's up

  950. to the JWs

  951. either

  952. because I didn't

  953. want to give

  954. them a greeting

  955. I'd be like

  956. hmm

  957. yeah

  958. real kind

  959. and warm

  960. real actual

  961. apologetics

  962. right there

  963. that's not

  964. what John's

  965. talking about

  966. if we're

  967. understanding

  968. the cultural

  969. context

  970. to bring

  971. someone

  972. into your

  973. home

  974. a traveling

  975. preacher

  976. there were

  977. good ones

  978. and obviously

  979. bad ones

  980. in these times

  981. to welcome

  982. them into

  983. your home

  984. and to show

  985. them any greeting

  986. is to show

  987. them your support

  988. you're saying

  989. you stamp

  990. them

  991. now I think

  992. that looks

  993. a lot

  994. different

  995. in our times

  996. but I think

  997. there are lessons

  998. that we can learn

  999. from John here

  1000. first John calls

  1001. out their air

  1002. there will be

  1003. deceivers

  1004. who go out

  1005. into the world

  1006. and after talking

1007. to a few of you

  1008. you're like a church

  1009. that goes out

  1010. into the world

  1011. like you're here

  1012. for a little while

  1013. then you're there

  1014. I think God

  1015. has a special

  1016. calling on this

  1017. church

  1018. for that

  1019. I think

  1020. there is a lot

  1021. of kingdom

  1022. potential

  1023. and purposes

  1024. there

  1025. I'll talk

  1026. about that

  1027. later

  1028. but you guys

  1029. will be

  1030. in different

  1031. churches

  1032. different places

  1033. throughout your

  1034. life

  1035. and you're

  1036. going to run

  1037. into a lot

  1038. of things

  1039. John would

  1040. have you

  1041. be able

  1042. to discern

  1043. what is

  1044. the air

  1045. John says

  1046. very clearly

  1047. here in his

  1048. times

  1049. the air

  1050. is that

  1051. the incarnation

  1052. was at

  1053. threat

  1054. and that

  1055. threatens the

  1056. perfection

  1057. of the gospel

  1058. you need

  1059. to know

  1060. in your

  1061. times

  1062. and places

  1063. what are

  1064. the threats

  1065. around you

  1066. and what

  1067. are the

  1068. threats

  1069. facing God's

  1070. people

  1071. what are

  1072. these plausible

  1073. arguments

  1074. that are

  1075. sneaking in

  1076. that could

  1077. deceive them

  1078. and rob

  1079. them

  1080. from all

  1081. this life

  1082. and warmth

  1083. that truth

  1084. and love

  1085. bring us

  1086. and friends

  1087. we're going

  1088. to need

  1089. grace

  1090. for that

  1091. but John

  1092. would tell

  1093. you never

  1094. never take

  1095. away from the

  1096. gospel to make

  1097. that happen

  1098. never add

  1099. to it

  1100. instead

  1101. abide in

  1102. it

  1103. and friends

  1104. the more

  1105. it becomes

  1106. precious to

  1107. you

  1108. and you're

  1109. like this

  1110. is my

  1111. place

  1112. above all

  1113. places

  1114. the less

  1115. likely you

  1116. will compromise

  1117. it

  1118. when you

  1119. are in

  1120. a hard

  1121. situation

  1122. all right

  1123. we'll wrap

  1124. it up

  1125. here

  1126. so much

  1127. to say

  1128. I'm glad

  1129. we have

  1130. more sessions

  1131. together

  1132. here's the

  1133. deal

  1134. if you

  1135. love

  1136. anything

  1137. you're

  1138. going to

  1139. protect

  1140. it

  1141. you really

  1142. are

  1143. and again

  1144. we're talking

  1145. about the

  1146. apostle John

  1147. now we're

  1148. seeing a little

  1149. bit of a

  1150. different side

  1151. maybe the

  1152. son of

  1153. thunder is

  1154. reemerging a

  1155. little bit

  1156. but it's

  1157. coming out

  1158. of love

  1159. it's coming

  1160. out of love

  1161. we don't want

  1162. to be

  1163. convictional

  1164. because we're

  1165. self-important

  1166. that gives

  1167. off a vibe

  1168. doesn't it

  1169. you know

  1170. when someone

  1171. like is

  1172. being

  1173. righteous

  1174. but it's

  1175. really just

  1176. self-righteous

  1177. we need

  1178. convictions

  1179. that come

  1180. out of a

  1181. realization

  1182. of how

  1183. important

  1184. Jesus is

  1185. when we

  1186. come out

  1187. of those

  1188. and not

  1189. just that

  1190. he's

  1191. important

  1192. but he's

  1193. everything

  1194. to us

  1195. that warms

  1196. up the

  1197. whole thing

  1198. so John

  1199. just gives

  1200. this like

  1201. corporate

  1202. warning

  1203. and then

  1204. let's

  1205. consider how

  1206. he ends

  1207. the letter

  1208. the last

  1209. two verses

  1210. though I

  1211. have much

  1212. to write

  1213. to you

  1214. I would

  1215. rather not

  1216. use paper

  1217. and ink

  1218. instead I

  1219. hope to

  1220. come to

  1221. you and

  1222. talk face

  1223. to face

  1224. why John

  1225. so that

  1226. our joy

  1227. may be

  1228. complete

  1229. the children

  1230. of your

  1231. elect sister

  1232. greet you

  1233. friends

  1234. let us

  1235. not

  1236. forget

  1237. under all

  1238. this is

  1239. John's

  1240. desire

  1241. for our

  1242. joy

  1243. and that

  1244. joy

  1245. will only

  1246. be

  1247. complete

  1248. as we

  1249. together

  1250. protect

  1251. and promote

  1252. the completeness

  1253. and perfection

  1254. of the gospel

  1255. we have in

  1256. Jesus Christ

  1257. would you pray

  1258. with me

  1259. father we

  1260. we want to

  1261. thank you

  1262. together

  1263. we can

  1264. easily

  1265. confess that

  1266. we have

  1267. more in

  1268. Christ

  1269. than we

  1270. have yet

  1271. realized

  1272. so we

  1273. pray help

  1274. us

  1275. abide

  1276. Lord when

  1277. we are

  1278. tempted to

  1279. shave

  1280. when we're

  1281. tempted to

  1282. add

  1283. help us

  1284. abide

  1285. help us

  1286. find our

  1287. life

  1288. more and

  1289. more in

  1290. Jesus

  1291. who he

  1292. is and

  1293. what he's

  1294. done for

  1295. us

  1296. Lord

  1297. we thank

  1298. you we are

  1299. not alone

  1300. in this

  1301. thank you

  1302. that you

  1303. hear our

  1304. prayers

  1305. answer in

  1306. this moment

  1307. and in the

  1308. moments beyond

  1309. this moment

  1310. we pray

  1311. in Jesus

  1312. name

  1313. so be

  1314. it
