  1. Second Kings chapter 17, brother, you, you prayed

    2 Kings 17 chapter mention

  2. beautifully. Thank you, Brian for praying.

  3. Thank you for the praise team, for helping us love the Lord in

  4. song. But it's on my heart to pray

  5. again. And so before we even read one

  6. verse or I make any other comment, can we just turn our

  7. attention to the Lord once more? Lord, it's only going to be by

  8. the power of your Holy Spirit to make this more than a lesson.

  9. For this to be a life changing Bible study, it has to come from

  10. you. And so we ask, Lord, that you

  11. would visit us. Thank you that you live in US.

  12. Thank you that you've sealed us. Thank you that you are a

  13. guarantee. But Lord, we pray for the

  14. manifest power of the Holy Spirit.

  15. And we ask Lord, that even as we go through these truths that we

  16. would hear the voice of Christ. And Lord, our request is single,

  17. that we would love the Lord Jesus Christ more, that the love

  18. that we can all testify of that is filled with inexpressible joy

  19. and glory. O Lord, wash us again in that

  20. kind of a love. We trust that you're able to

  21. provide it. And we pray that you deal with

  22. every obstacle, every distraction, anything that would

  23. hinder 1 heart in this place from receiving what you have to

  24. say. Lord, we adore you and we pray

  25. that you help us cherish you more through this study.

  26. In the name of the living Christ, we pray Amen and Amen.

  27. Second King. 17 If I were to title this Bible study, I think

  28. I would go with the final straw. The final straw, because we have

  29. been studying week after week, 1, King after another, failing

  30. to uphold God's righteous standard and the nation's abject

  31. abhorrence of God's Word. And now we have come to the

  32. patience of the Lord reaching its breaking point.

  33. This is significant because this is going to manifest in the

  34. Kingdom of Israel facing its ultimate punishment, the forced

  35. evacuation of this people from the Promised land.

  36. This is going to change the rest of our study in the Old

  37. Testament. This is absolutely massive.

  38. It's imperative and there's so much in it for us to consider.

  39. But we have to keep this in mind that even before the people

  40. crossed the border and entered into their new home, the Lord

  41. warned so many times that if they continued in sin, they

  42. would be vomited out of the land, just like the previous

  43. inhabitants. But even though those warnings

  44. came to them before and after they lived in this land, none of

  45. them could imagine that it would be possible no matter what they

  46. did. And this was a false security

  47. that many of them had false hope in.

  48. And it was something that the Lord addressed through His

  49. servants, the prophets, on more than one occasion.

  50. In fact, it's all over the writings of the prophets.

  51. So allow me to give you a couple of examples.

  52. One that comes to mind is Amos chapter 6, verse 1.

    Amos 6:1

  53. And you don't have to turn there unless you want to see with your

  54. own eyes. But he says there are woe to

  55. those who are at ease in Zion, to those who feel secure in the

  56. mountain of Samaria that was the capital of the Kingdom of

  57. Israel. And in that same chapter, in

  58. verse seven, he says, therefore you're going to be the first one

  59. to be exiled. I think of Jeremiah Chapter 7,

    Jeremiah 7:3

  60. verses 3 and 4 where the prophet says, thus says the Lord of

  61. hosts, the God of Israel, amend your ways and your deeds and I

  62. will let you dwell in this place following it with this.

  63. Do not trust in deceptive words. And the word specifically that

  64. Jeremiah had in mind was this is the temple of the Lord, the

  65. temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord.

  66. What were they saying? There is no way that God will

  67. allow anybody to conquer the temple.

  68. It's permanent. And they had all these strange

  69. explanations in their own hearts and even from false prophets who

  70. were saying peace, peace when there was no peace.

  71. So here's what we can learn right from the beginning.

  72. It's a dangerous thing to try to rationalize God's justice with

  73. our carnal wisdom. And man has many clever ways of

  74. trying to dismiss the concept of divine judgement against sin.

  75. And they do this again in many ways.

  76. Some try to redefine what sin really is, others put into

  77. question God's willingness to judge and what his wrath truly

  78. entails, and some just lie about his desire to bring about swift

  79. justice against iniquity and make him out to be someone who's

  80. not wrathful at all. So this was a constant

  81. diversion. This was something that was

  82. prominent in the days of the prophets, and it caused many

  83. people to be crystallized in their sin.

  84. And you have to recognize something.

  85. This deception was not only prevalent in the days of

  86. Jeremiah and Amos and Isaiah and Ezekiel, it was true in the days

  87. of the apostles. I'll ask you to turn here in

  88. Ephesians chapter 5. I know I told you to turn to 2nd

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  89. king 17. Just keep your hand there.

  90. But look at this in the New Testament, in Ephesians chapter

    Ephesians 5:5–6

  91. 5, verse 5 to 6, Paul says, for you may be sure of this, that

  92. everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous,

  93. that is an idolater, has no inheritance in the Kingdom of

  94. Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with

  95. empty words, for because of these things, the wrath of God

  96. comes upon the sons of disobedience.

  97. So this was prominent in Paul's day as well.

  98. You had people who are being taught, people who are persuaded

  99. that God will not judge certain sins, that these are just

  100. impulses. This is natural, that this is

  101. something that he winks at, this is something that he will not

  102. consider or take into account. And Paul calls those empty

  103. words. And more than he says, this is

  104. deception. Yes, there are sins that we can

  105. commit that God will pour out his wrath on, namely, if you are

  106. outside of Christ. Do you think it's any different

  107. today? Do you think that there are

  108. people who are downplaying the wrath of God that are redefining

  109. what eternal judgement really is?

  110. It's becoming increasingly popular in churches, in

  111. Christendom. Be careful.

  112. Be careful of those who would try to question God's character,

  113. His nature, who emphasize one element of Him while ignoring

  114. another. This people here understood that

  115. God was patient, I'm talking about Israel, but they could not

  116. fathom how and why He would punish.

  117. So let's read the first 6 verses together because what you and I

  118. are going to look at is the final king of Israel, not of

  119. Judah but of the Northern Kingdom.

  120. Second king 17 verse one in the 12th year of A has king of

  121. Judah. Hoshea the son of Elah began to

  122. reign in Samaria over Israel and he reigned nine years and he did

  123. what was evil in the sight of the Lord, yet not as the kings

  124. of Israel who were before him against them came up.

  125. Shamanese are king of Assyria and Hoshea became his vassal and

  126. paid him tribute. But the king of Assyria found

  127. treachery in Hoshea, for he had sent messengers to Sew king of

  128. Egypt, and offered no tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had

  129. done year by year. Therefore the king of Assyria

  130. shut him up and bound him in prison.

  131. Then the king of Assyria invaded all the land and came to

  132. Samaria, and for three years he besieged it.

  133. In the ninth year of Hosheh, the king of Assyria captured

  134. Samaria, and he carried the Israelites away to Assyria and

  135. placed them in Hala and on the high bar the river of Gozen and

  136. the city of the Medes. Behold, the final ruler of this

  137. Kingdom. And as significant as that is,

  138. he doesn't seem to be the focus of these verses at least.

  139. Did you notice how many times the title King of Assyria

  140. appears in these verses? It's repeated a total of 6

  141. times. This is a linguistic attempt to

  142. try to help us understand that there is one Kingdom now that's

  143. overshadowing another. In other words, there's a new

  144. sheriff in town. The king of Israel is no longer

  145. in charge. A foreign nation now has come to

  146. take full control. And yes, it's gradual, but we

  147. see where this is going. And this is so important for us

  148. to consider because it's kind of odd to see the king of Assyria

  149. encroaching upon the Kingdom of Israel under this

  150. administration. Why is it strange, at least

  151. initially? Look back at verse 2.

  152. And he did what was evil in the side of the Lord, yet not as the

  153. kings of Israel who were before him.

  154. So he was evil, but he was not as evil as his predecessors.

  155. And so some students of the Bible have come to this and they

  156. were puzzled. Why does an invasion occur under

  157. a king who is not as wicked as those who came before him?

  158. It would make more sense for an Ahab like King or it has why

  159. Hoshea and many explanations have been given, but I think

  160. it's more simple than people make it out to be.

  161. It's actually not as complicated because it doesn't say that

  162. Hoshea was innocent, does it doesn't say that he was

  163. righteous. It just shows that he's sinned

  164. differently than those who came before him.

  165. If anything, this is a reminder to all of us that sin is sin and

  166. that we all have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of

  167. God. Because we are very tricky and

  168. we are very clever in how we try to make ourselves less sinful

  169. than others. We compare, we contrast, and you

  170. and I may transgress in different ways, but choosing

  171. certain sins over others does not give us a better chance of

  172. being acquitted. That's exactly what James talks

  173. about in James 211. He says that the law says do not

  174. commit adultery, and it also says do not murder.

  175. And if you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have

  176. become a transgressor of the law.

  177. OK, so you don't sin in this way, but you sin in another.

  178. You're still, you're still a transgressor in your own right.

  179. You still have broken God's law. You're still stained with sin

  180. and you need a Savior. Hoshea here is is not innocent.

  181. He can't escape this. He himself is in trouble and you

  182. and I have to understand because if we compare, we can convince

  183. ourselves that we can make make it past God's righteous standard

  184. when all the while we are desperately in need of it.

  185. I think of Isaiah having this conversation the other day with

  186. somebody where Isaiah there in Isaiah chapter 6 in the presence

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  187. of the Lord. He says I'm a man of unclean

  188. lips and a moment among the people of unclean lips.

  189. The context makes that so much more profound than people

  190. initially understand it because in the year that king Uzziah

  191. died, Isaiah had that vision. How did Uzziah you remember this

  192. for a couple weeks ago. How did Uzziah sin?

  193. He went into the temple of the Lord assumed to be a priest.

  194. How was he punished? He became a leper.

  195. What was a leper to do if they to do it, they came into close

  196. proximity with somebody who was not a leper.

  197. They were to announce what unclean, unclean, unclean,

  198. unclean. And here's Isaiah the prophet

  199. who up to chapter 6 was telling all the people of Israel, woe to

  200. you, woe to you. And then once he sees the

  201. glorified Lord there on his throne, he says, I'm a man of

  202. unclean lips. What is he saying there?

  203. He's saying many things, including this.

  204. I'm no better than Uziah. I'm no better than that man in

  205. the presence of Jesus Christ. I need a savior.

  206. Well, I'm a prophet. Who cares?

  207. I preach well in the presence of the Lord, even your best deeds

  208. are unclean. So Jose here, he's not going to

  209. go free. He's also going to be facing

  210. judgement. And here's what's so

  211. significant. Assyria does not immediately

  212. take over the Kingdom, does he? It's gradual and before he takes

  213. full control, he takes control of the people in terms of

  214. taxation. So now they're subjugated to

  215. them. They have to pay every year.

  216. They have to give up their resources.

  217. And look at this at verse 3. This stood out to me here.

  218. It says here that he had to pay him tribute.

  219. That's the last word there. Verse 3, the word in the Hebrew

  220. is found all over the book of Leviticus describing what the

  221. offerings that the people were to make in the temple as an act

  222. of worship. And I think there's a subtle

  223. lesson there. I think there's a reminder here

  224. that whether we are aware of it or not, we all worship someone

  225. or something. This is how low the nation got,

  226. that instead of focusing and giving all their tribute to the

  227. Lord, they gave it to another king.

  228. Whatever your ultimate allegiance or loyalty is to is

  229. what you worship. There's no other way around it.

  230. And so in refusing to worship the true God, he is in essence

  231. worshiping another king. And that is true for all of us

  232. to fail to faithfully worship the Lord.

  233. You will give what belongs to God to something else.

  234. You was we heard so many times become a slave to someone or

  235. something else. And those have tragic

  236. consequences when God is not the object of your worship.

  237. Let me give you an example. I know we haven't read these

  238. verses, but Scroll down to verse 15.

  239. It says here they despised His statutes and His covenant that

  240. He made with their fathers and the warnings that He gave them.

  241. They went after false idols and became false, and they follow

  242. the nations that were around them concerning whom the Lord

  243. have commanded them, that they should not do like them.

  244. I think the King James captures this verse a little bit more

  245. accurately. DSV says that they what they

  246. went after false idols and became false.

  247. King James would say they went after vain things and became

  248. vain. But when you look at the Hebrew,

  249. it's even more profound. It draws out the meaning, I

  250. believe obviously in the original language for us to

  251. consider the the severity of wrong pursuits.

  252. The word there for vain or false in the Hebrew is Havel.

  253. When I looked into this word, I wanted to know what it meant.

  254. It was interesting. It means to act mentally void,

  255. something that's profitless, something that's futile.

  256. In other contexts, it would be the word breath or vapor.

  257. So if you go with the original, you know how you can translate

  258. that one part in that verse? They went after empty things and

  259. became empty. And here's what came to mind.

  260. You all know it, that before you came to Christ there was a

  261. hollowness in the soul, right? You can testify that and you

  262. know it. When you're not walking closely

  263. with the Lord, you, you feel like you're a shell.

  264. You feel like I'm missing something.

  265. And I believe that's a proof text to back that feeling up.

  266. In pursuing empty things, what happens?

  267. They became empty. And that's a sad state of

  268. anybody who does not have the Lord as their King.

  269. Here's the beauty of our God, that He is so willing to rescue

  270. us from tyrannical masters that have deceived us and lied to us,

  271. and keep us bound and bring us unto Himself and become our Lord

  272. and fulfill us as He becomes our Lord and our Savior.

  273. Hoshey had that choice. I believe that's the reason why

  274. the Lord does not allow Assyria to immediately ransack

  275. everything. He allows them to come in steps

  276. close enough for Hoshea to taste the misery of being ruled by

  277. something or someone else. So what does Hoshea do?

  278. Does he cry out for mercy? Does he realize that I'm, I'm,

  279. I'm doing the wrong thing here, Lord, I surrender, I repent.

  280. Now look what he does in verse 4 again.

  281. But the king of Assyria found treachery in Hoshea, for he had

  282. sent messengers to sow king of Egypt and offered no tribute to

  283. the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year.

  284. Therefore the king of Assyria shut him up and bound him in

  285. prison. He blew it.

  286. The one opportunity for you to cry out so that you can be

  287. liberated, to be saved, you turn to another savior.

  288. And why he messes up here is not because his attempt to conspire

  289. against Assyria angered the king.

  290. It's because he went to another solution apart from God himself.

  291. Can I ask you a question? Did God give precise

  292. instruction, namely to the kings, of how they should relate

  293. to the nation of Egypt? Does anything come to mind from

  294. the Old Testament? We've referenced this passage

  295. over and over again throughout our studying kings.

  296. It's in that passage in Deuteronomy 17 and in verse 16,

  297. he was so specific in telling what his future rulers ought to

  298. do and how they should relate, namely to the Egyptians.

  299. Listen to this in Deuteronomy 1716.

  300. Only he being the king, only he must not acquire many horses for

  301. himself, or cause the people to return to Egypt in order to

  302. acquire many horses. Now look at this, since the Lord

  303. has said to you, you shall never return that way again.

  304. The Lord knew the temptation that would come.

  305. And Egypt in the Scriptures is often a picture of the world.

  306. And under those circumstances, was Israel ever meant to engage

  307. with the place that they were delivered from?

  308. And this may not resonate with you now, but I hope that you'll

  309. remember it for a time where it'll really count.

  310. The temptation to rely on fleshly carnal actions, wisdom,

  311. or worldly partnerships will be much more intense when you're in

  312. trouble. When you find yourself surprised

  313. by some kind of distress or decision, you feel like there

  314. are no answers. Be careful being a Lord to go

  315. back to the way you used to think or your former man,

  316. because in those moments you know what the Lord does.

  317. He allows those things to happen so that he will watch to see if

  318. you'll come to Him. Where will you run?

  319. Who will you call? What will you rely on?

  320. What will you implement? And there's a place in Isaiah 30

  321. where the Lord speaks about this very incident through the

  322. prophet Isaiah. Oh, it's worth turning there in

  323. Isaiah 30, verse one. Ah, stubborn children, declares

  324. the Lord, who carry out a plan but not mine, and who make an

  325. alliance but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin,

  326. who set out to go down to Egypt and do what without asking for

  327. my direction? To take refuge in the protection

  328. of Pharaoh and to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt.

  329. So what was the problem here? Not that they couldn't find

  330. answers elsewhere and practical means, but they did so without

  331. asking direction from God. That's what broke God's heart.

  332. Do you want to enrich your relationship with the Lord?

  333. Can I offer one thing? Make it a regular habit to

  334. consult Him. This is his desire.

  335. He takes delight in receiving your request, and if you do

  336. that, listen, he not only will hear you, you will receive

  337. something in return. You will inherit a steady peace.

  338. If that's a pattern in your life, I can guarantee it.

  339. You will know more of His presence because you're

  340. constantly coming to Him, and you will know the very blessing

  341. of God on the thing that you're asking Him to help you with,

  342. because He doesn't just watch, He waits.

  343. He waits and He waits for the moment that you turn to Him to

  344. do something else. Look at the same passage in

  345. Isaiah 30. Scroll down to verse 18.

  346. It's in the same context, and look what He says.

  347. Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore

  348. he exalts himself to show mercy to you.

  349. For the Lord is a God of justice.

  350. Blessed are all those who wait for him.

  351. Do you see that? So not only does he observe to

  352. see what will you do when you're pressed and understanding this,

  353. that He waits not just for you to obey, but for you to know His

  354. mercy. He longs to show mercy and

  355. notice that the deliverance, the answer is not necessarily

  356. immediate. And the same passage we're told

  357. blessed are all those who wait for him.

  358. So, so many people are frustrated in turning to the

  359. Lord as a reflex because they they want immediate answers.

  360. OK, but there's a specific blessing for those who wait for

  361. the answer and you can comfort yourself with this.

  362. I've done my part to turn to him to receive from him and I trust

  363. that he is merciful to me in that place.

  364. This, this king refused to do it, at least for the time being,

  365. and this captivity would be so shocking to the original readers

  366. that the authors compelled by the Spirit to do something with

  367. the rest of the chapter. He's going to give a summary of

  368. why they were exiled. This is staggering.

  369. This is altering for the future of this people.

  370. And so from verse 7 back in our main text in 17 Second Kings 17,

  371. from verse 7 down to verse 23, there's going to be an overview

  372. comments that you're very familiar with because we've seen

  373. them over and over in our study of Second Kings.

  374. But as I was staring at this passage the other day, praying,

  375. Lord, I know there's something else here.

  376. You don't repeat yourself without, without a goal, just

  377. meditating and just asking the Lord for something.

  378. I realized that certain words and certain phrases were

  379. standing out. And as things stood out, I

  380. realized that there's specific reasons why the people were

  381. removed from the promises of God, and they're the same

  382. reasons, the same causes, the same factors that might lure you

  383. and me away from God's perfect will for our lives.

  384. See, the Promised Land signifies that God's good promises, his

  385. gifts. And though the people remained

  386. his people, even though they were in exile, they removed

  387. themselves from a position of receiving his promises.

  388. It's possible for Christians to do the same.

  389. Praise God, he seals us and keeps us until the end for

  390. eternal life. But you can miss out a lot in

  391. this life. That's why for the rest of the

  392. study, you have to really pay attention.

  393. This is my heart. This has been my prayer because

  394. I think there are at least four reasons why Christians are not

  395. under God's total blessing, are not walking in the fullness of

  396. his plan for their lives. And it's here.

  397. It's it's exemplified with this nation.

  398. And so let's look at 4 reasons, 4 causes for a person who is in

  399. Christ to miss out on all that Christ would have for them.

  400. And the first one is this no awe of God.

  401. There is no awe of God. Look at verse 7 to verse 8.

  402. And this occurred because the people of Israel had sinned

  403. against the Lord their God, who had brought them up out of the

  404. land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt,

  405. and had feared other gods and walked in the customs of the

  406. nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel and

  407. in the customs that the kings of Israel had practiced.

  408. Highlight that phrase at the end of verse seven, had feared other

  409. gods. Obviously that doesn't mean that

  410. they were in dread of different deities or local powers.

  411. This speaks of them having a greater reverence and adoration

  412. for other things instead of the Lord Himself, and that was a

  413. cause for them to slip to a wrong path.

  414. And this is not mentioned first without purpose.

  415. This is where a lot of things go wrong for people.

  416. When they're no longer mesmerized and amazed of who God

  417. is, things become problematic. Another way of saying it is that

  418. the true protection that we can inherit from evil comes from

  419. standing in amazement of who the Lord is.

  420. Proverbs 813. The fear of the Lord is the

  421. hatred of evil. The fear of the Lord is the

  422. hatred of evil. That tells us more than just

  423. what the fear of the Lord is. That also explains what the fear

  424. of the Lord does. It causes you to hate evil.

  425. It inspires you to abhor that which God abhors.

  426. Whatever He loathes, you love. And anytime you find yourself

  427. attached or attracted to that which God hates, you can know

  428. this for sure. You are deficient.

  429. I am deficient in my awareness of the majesty of God always.

  430. Whenever sin looks better than the Savior, I have lost my sense

  431. of awe of who the Lord is. You know, I was thinking about

  432. different verses. I mean, when you talk about the

  433. concept and the truth of the fear of the Lord, so many things

  434. can come to mind. And there's this obscure passage

  435. that I've, I've preached on before, but then I saw it in a

  436. different light because I remember once, I don't know when

  437. exactly, I remember spending a time addressing the issue of

  438. fear, ungodly fear, and what fear inspires a man to do.

  439. And fear, really that emotion, when it is tolerated, leads you

  440. to sin in different ways. So I know I told you to go to

  441. Isaiah earlier, but this is so worth going to again, go to

  442. Isaiah and look at chapter 57, verse 11.

  443. Notice the specific criticism that the Lord gives through the

  444. prophet to the people. Whom do you dread and fear?

  445. So that you lied and did not Remember Me, did not lay it to

  446. heart, Have I not held my peace even for a long time?

  447. And you do not fear me. So again here you see how what

  448. fear can do to a person, they can encourage you to do what

  449. lie. Maybe you've known that

  450. temptation when you were faced with something and you

  451. understood. If I tell the truth, there are

  452. going to be consequences. So I'm going to exaggerate or

  453. I'm going to downplay this, or I might just outright deny it.

  454. Fear stimulates us to different sins, but the diagnosis is

  455. deeper than that. Look at the last part, he says,

  456. and you do not fear me. So it's not just the presence of

  457. an unrighteous fear, it's the absence of the fear of the Lord.

  458. So what? Because they didn't fear the

  459. Lord, they felt the liberty to lie.

  460. And the Lord says, you didn't fear me.

  461. That's why you succumbed to this.

  462. And that should be a strong reminder for us that when we do

  463. not have the Lord as our ultimate satisfaction, ultimate

  464. delight, ultimate wonder, other things that take His place will

  465. lead you to do things they never planned doing.

  466. Which brings me to the second point.

  467. Let's go to our main text. They didn't have an awe of God.

  468. But notice what we find here in verse nine.

  469. One word in this verse and the people of Israel did secretly

  470. against the Lord their God, things that were not right.

  471. They built for themselves high places and all their towns from

  472. watchtower to fortified city. What word stands out to you in

  473. that verse? Good secretly.

  474. Isn't that fascinating? The public blatant ideology of

  475. this people. You know where it began in

  476. private, you wouldn't know that apart from this verse.

  477. At least I can confess that because everything that we've

  478. seen was just out in the open. But no, in review of the sins of

  479. the nation, the Holy Spirit says it started in secret.

  480. Number two reason why people will disqualify themselves from

  481. God using them and blessing him with his maximum blessing.

  482. They live in secret sin. They live in secret sin, and

  483. again, I don't think it's random that the second point is

  484. following what we just touched on concerning the fear of the

  485. Lord, because when you fear the Lord, it's very hard to sin in

  486. secret. I firmly believe that the one

  487. who honors the Lord in this way will live with the following

  488. understanding sin and sin, whether it's private or public,

  489. whether it's internal or external, other people know

  490. about it or not, it doesn't matter because the Lord is aware

  491. of it. That's one of the ways you know

  492. that you're walking in the fear of the Lord.

  493. And I firmly believe that people walk away from what God has for

  494. them because so many have convinced themselves as long as

  495. other people don't know about this, I am OK.

  496. You're not, because God knows and he's the one who ultimately

  497. blesses. Promotion comes from the Lord.

  498. Psalm says empowerment comes from the Lord.

  499. True treasure comes from the Lord.

  500. And on the flip side, a child of God who believes I may be able

  501. to fool others, but I can't fool God.

  502. Oh, you have secured for yourself a trajectory of great

  503. gifts and blessing and security. I can't fool God.

  504. I can't. He knows what's in here.

  505. He knows what I think about. He knows my motives.

  506. Man, if you're there and you stay there, every area of your

  507. life will be blessed. Every area your marriage will be

  508. blessed. Your relationship with your

  509. children will be blessed. Your relationship with others

  510. will be blessed. Your ministry will be blessed.

  511. Everything will be blessed, but if you think like these

  512. Israelites that you can actually like a ceiling and walls can

  513. keep God from seeing what I'm doing, come on, who are you

  514. fooling? So many truths that encourage me

  515. in the Scriptures. Deal with the heart, where you

  516. have guys like Nehemiah who prayed from the heart, Abraham's

  517. servant looking for a wife for Isaac.

  518. He prayed in his heart. And that shows me every time

  519. that the voice in my heart is just as loud as what I'm saying

  520. in this microphone. It's quiet to you, but to Him is

  521. just as loud. That changes so much, is it not?

  522. We see here that the people refuse to believe that.

  523. And so it started secretly, but then they began to go in the

  524. high places. Third, reason 1/3 cause for us

  525. to veer off God's promises is in verse 10.

  526. They set up for themselves pillars and ash Him on every

  527. high hill and under every green tree, and we continue.

  528. And there they made offerings on all the high places, as the

  529. nations did, whom the Lord carried away before them.

  530. And they did wicked things, provoking the Lord to anger.

  531. And they served idols of which the Lord had said to them, You

  532. shall not do this. Number one, there is no law of

  533. God #2 they sinned in secret #3 You can't expect God's full

  534. blessing if you imitate the world.

  535. Where do I get that from? Says here in the middle of verse

  536. 11, as the nations that whom the Lord carried away before them.

  537. One of the most shocking verses in the New Testament regarding

  538. believers is what James says and James 44 You adulterous people,

  539. who's he speaking to? A bunch of churches, He says.

  540. You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the

  541. world is what enmity with God? Therefore, whoever wishes to be

  542. a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

  543. And the world that James is referring to speaks about the

  544. godless, self-centered, Antichrist value system of this

  545. world. He's not talking about the

  546. things that we see and we can enjoy in this live.

  547. No, he's talking about the passions, the desires, the

  548. ambitions of those who hate Christ.

  549. And when believers succumb to these things, they make

  550. themselves unfit for much in the Kingdom because the Lord can't

  551. use somebody to reach the World if they're enamored by the

  552. world. And that's what we find here

  553. with this nation that was called to be a light to the nation's.

  554. Now they wanted to be like the nation's.

  555. This the Lord had no use for them.

  556. How can I make you shine? How can I, how can I expect

  557. people to taste something different when you want to blend

  558. in so much? And so why does so many

  559. professing believers want to look like the world?

  560. Why do they want to cuss like the world?

  561. I don't understand this trend of Christians cussing.

  562. Why? What do you get out of that?

  563. Why and how are you entertained by the same vulgarity that the

  564. world drinks in and enjoys the ambitions of the world and at

  565. the same time expect testimonies.

  566. I'm not talking about legalism. I'm talking about blatant

  567. obvious things that a line has been drawn.

  568. This is of the world. This is of those who are in

  569. Christ. It won't happen.

  570. And you might be wondering, well, I know some people who

  571. have ministries and they look, they look like the world.

  572. They sound like the world. They're they're pretty

  573. culturally savvy, if you want to call it that.

  574. OK, fine. They have a platform.

  575. I can tell you this, they don't have God's power.

  576. OK, fine, they have money. They don't have God's favor.

  577. Well, they have so many coming to their meetings, fine.

  578. But do they really have true disciples of the Lord Jesus

  579. Christ or just spectators? I'm talking about the real raw

  580. blessing of God. I'm not talking about marketing

  581. success. I'm not talking about physical

  582. things. I'm talking about the deep

  583. things of the soul, real fruit, things that will carry out into

  584. eternity. I can't expect that if I'm going

  585. to flirt with the things that breaks my God's heart.

  586. So this nation wanted to be like the nation.

  587. So be it. You want it so badly, go live

  588. with them. You like idols?

  589. Go live with those who worship idols.

  590. They have plenty of them in Assyria.

  591. But you can't have both. Last thing, let's come back to

  592. our main text in verse 13. Yet the Lord warned Israel and

  593. Judah by every prophet and every seer saying, turn from your evil

  594. ways and keep My commandments and my statutes in accordance

  595. with all the law that I commanded your Father's and that

  596. I sent to you by my servants, the prophets.

  597. But they will not listen. But we're stubborn as their

  598. fathers had been, who did not believe in the Lord their God.

  599. Let me say this before we go to this fourth point.

  600. You don't need to be entrenched in all of these things.

  601. All it takes is one of them. If I don't have an awe of God,

  602. that's all it takes. If, if I live in secret sin,

  603. that's powerful enough. If if I am imitating the world,

  604. that does enough damage. And though these are all

  605. interconnected in their ways, we can see them as separate

  606. threats. Here's the last one.

  607. If I want a definite way of stepping out of bounds of what

  608. God has for me, all I have to do is ignore His word, ignore God's

  609. word. So here's the kindness of Lord

  610. in verse 13. He sent prophets and every

  611. minister that he had, every seer, they were saying the same

  612. thing. It was a giant megaphone.

  613. Turn from your evil ways and keep my commandments over and

  614. over again. And we got a little sample of

  615. the roster prophets that were there at this time.

  616. Guys like Jonah and Hosea and Isaiah.

  617. These were men who were ministering at the same time is

  618. incredible. And they still did what Verse

  619. 14, the first few words, they would not listen.

  620. We should all be concerned for anybody on the individual or on

  621. a corporate level who is not sensitive to the Scriptures,

  622. sensitive to the Word of God. I I worry for those who are

  623. consistently distracted when the pure Word of God is being

  624. taught, no matter who's teaching it or worse, when it's heard.

  625. But it's never taken to heart because you see other things

  626. will unfold over time when a person or a society as a whole

  627. are exposed to the Word like this generation was, but does

  628. not listen, but turns a deaf ear but refuses to receive it.

  629. When you hear the Word of God irresponsibly, it's dangerous.

  630. Jesus spoke about that on so many occasions.

  631. Listen. What is He going to say to every

  632. church on Sundays as we listen? He has an ear, let Him hear.

  633. In other words, you can hear sounds and words but not really

  634. Get it? That's exactly what was

  635. happening here. And here is the gradual decline.

  636. We have an outline right here. So it starts with verse 14,

  637. right? But they would not listen.

  638. But look at the next phase, verse 15.

  639. They despised His statutes and His covenant that He made with

  640. their fathers and the warnings that He gave them.

  641. So you went from not listening to now despising.

  642. And the word despising. Here is the image of not taking

  643. it seriously. Yes, but the conviction that you

  644. once knew and praise God for is an annoyance.

  645. You shun it now. You turn off your conscience as

  646. quickly as possible. You deflect.

  647. You never allow it to apply to you.

  648. And over time your conscience becomes more and more numb,

  649. insensitive and things that once pierced your heart.

  650. And you couldn't wait for the benediction of the end of the

  651. service so you can find some quiet place or go home early to

  652. get on your knees. Just bounces off of you.

  653. Oh, you wouldn't say it, but inside you despise it.

  654. It bugs you. I'm happy that I can say this

  655. about very few experiences and not many.

  656. But I'll tell you how I've seen this in my own life from the

  657. platform. This was years ago.

  658. I remember seeing a specific season of somebody's life where

  659. they would come to church always once the meeting was over, they

  660. only came for the fellowship. And the only way I can explain

  661. that was they didn't want to hear God's Word.

  662. It was too hot, it was too convicting.

  663. So I want my friends, I want my fellowship, but they didn't want

  664. God's Word. And I've seen that happen more

  665. than once. And the way they were living

  666. backed it up that God's Word wasn't doing its work in them,

  667. and they didn't want to sit under God's Word.

  668. This can happen in different ways, but that's not even the

  669. final step. There's another thing that takes

  670. place. Look here at verse 16.

  671. And they abandoned and they abandoned all the commandments

  672. of the Lord their God and made for themselves metal images of

  673. two calves. And they made an Asherah and

  674. worship all the hosts of heaven and serve Baal.

  675. So you went from not listening to despising and now you have

  676. abandoned. Here's the image.

  677. It's no longer a negative feeling that you have.

  678. You are now actually walking in the way of the world.

  679. You are now pursuing the things that the world loves.

  680. You are now sacrificing of yourself to that which the world

  681. sacrifices for. And for some they might be at

  682. this phase, you know, picking and choosing certain things in

  683. the Scriptures. Others it can be radical

  684. apostasy. They just deny the thing

  685. altogether. They don't want anything to do

  686. with the Lord. And that happens unfortunately

  687. to some. So they walk away and they

  688. sometimes deny it. And when you when you stay there

  689. long enough and you don't allow the word to torch the lies and

  690. the temptations that try to callus your heart, and you don't

  691. allow God's thunderous and comforting voice to obliterate

  692. anything that tries to steal his goodness, his blessings from

  693. your life, you become more vulnerable to things that you

  694. thought were deplorable. You are now desensitized and you

  695. begin to entertain and even embrace things like what we read

  696. here in verse 17. And they burned, and they burned

  697. their sons and their daughters as offerings, and used

  698. divination and omens and sold themselves to do evil in the

  699. sight of the Lord, provoking Him to anger.

  700. Do you see it? Who would have thought that

  701. would start with not listening would lead to burning?

  702. Burning who? Their children.

  703. You think this is outrageous? This is exaggerated, Is it?

  704. Is there not a silent Holocaust happening while we're having

  705. Bible study here in America? Is it so outlandish to believe

  706. that there are people who are literally killing their sons and

  707. their daughters? Do you think such people are

  708. listening to the word of God? No, such people have abandoned

  709. it. And so understand when you

  710. deviate from this, when this does not become the means of

  711. your worship, of your guidance, of your delight, you can go from

  712. not listening. And the way you do that at home

  713. is you just tuck this away. And when you come here, you're

  714. here, but you're not really here.

  715. And if it's really a church, a pulpit that preaches the truth,

  716. if you're not careful, you can begin to despise.

  717. And there's many ways of despising the truth and all I've

  718. seen it. It goes from despising to

  719. abandoning, from abandoning to making decisions that can leave

  720. scars on your life and other people's lives because it all

  721. began with you choosing to ignore the Word of God.

  722. So this is how the people walked away from the promised land.

  723. And here's how the Lord by the Spirit through the author,

  724. brings this section to a close in verse 18.

  725. Let's just read from verse 18 down to verse 23.

  726. Therefore, the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed

  727. them out of His sight. None was left but the tribe of

  728. Judah only. Judah also did not keep the

  729. commandments of the Lord their God, but walked in the customs

  730. that Israel had introduced. So right there, you and I are

  731. being prepared that Judah is headed for trouble.

  732. Verse 20 And the Lord rejected all the descendants of Israel,

  733. and afflicted them, and gave them into the hand of

  734. plunderers, until he cast them in is rather cast them out of

  735. his sight. When he had torn Israel from the

  736. House of David, they made Jeroboam the son of the back

  737. king, and Jeroboam drove Israel from following the Lord, and

  738. made them commit great sin. The people of Israel walked, and

  739. all the sins that Jeroboam did, they did not depart from them

  740. until the Lord removed Israel out of His sight, as He had

  741. spoken by all His servants, the prophets.

  742. So Israel was exiled from their own land to Assyria until this

  743. day. For the rest of this chapter,

  744. we're going to realize that Assyria didn't stop there

  745. because although they made the land vacant and they dispersed

  746. the people of Israel, they're going to now replace the vacancy

  747. with their own kind of people. And the decision that is Siri

  748. will make here will actually have effect leading up to the

  749. days of Jesus. So I can't keep you here for

  750. another hour, but I'll choose to leave that for next week.

  751. I think what we heard suffices for us to digest the word of the

  752. Lord. Help us, Lord, to examine our

  753. hearts. And we pray, Lord, that we would

  754. just have a renewed awe of you. We pray, Lord, that you would

  755. never allow us to be casual with the Scriptures.

  756. Help us fall deeper in love with you.

  757. Thank You, Lord, that in crisis moments, even if the troubles

  758. that we are facing come from our own sin, You watch and you wait

  759. to be merciful to us. Help us believe that every

  760. single time. If it's a mess that we didn't

  761. ask for or if it's a mess that we created, help us believe that

  762. You're blazing eyes of love look upon us and you're waiting for

  763. us to turn to you and ask for your help.

  764. And if that's, if that's for anybody here who finds

  765. themselves in muck and mire, may they take this truth today and

  766. apply it immediately. And Lord, for all of us, all of

  767. us here, help us, Lord, stay near you.

  768. We want our lives, this short, brief life to not be empty, but

  769. to be filled with your life. So if there's anything that is

  770. vain, anything that we're pursuing that's replacing you,

  771. oh, show it to us. We will abandon it.

  772. We will not abandon you, Lord, by your grace, keep us close to

  773. you. So Lord, even tonight we worship

  774. you and we worship you with hearts that are longing to have

  775. all that you have for us. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

  776. Amen. Oh, let's worship the Lord

  777. together. Let's stand and adore him and

  778. love him and fear him, for He is worthy and it is for our safety.
