  1. We are in Matthew chapter 3 this morning.

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  2. We have been going through a sermon series in the Gospel of Matthew.

  3. We started it in Advent, and we're going to go straight,

  4. go right through the rest of the book now that Christmas is past.

  5. So we're in Matthew chapter 3.

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  6. And my name is Sean, for those of you who don't know me.

  7. It's my privilege and joy to preach God's word to you this morning.

  8. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  9. Heavenly Father,

  10. your word in Matthew 3 has a sobering message for us.

  11. Won't you help us to be alert physically, spiritually,

  12. to the urgency of repentance and faith in Jesus.

  13. Won't you cast down any fleshly confidence

  14. and false assurances that we presume upon and cling to.

  15. And fix our eyes and all of our hopes

  16. solely on Jesus Christ, your son, our king, Allah.

  17. Speak to us.

  18. You promise the baptism in the Holy Spirit and fire

  19. for those who repent and believe.

  20. So, Lord,

  21. fill us more and more with your Holy Spirit

  22. and make those who are not yet born again,

  23. born again,

  24. baptize in your spirit.

  25. Even this morning.

  26. In Jesus' name we pray.

  27. Amen.

  28. If you are able, please stand

  29. so that we can honor God as we read his word.

  30. I will be reading out loud from Matthew 3, verses 1 to 12.

    Matthew 3:1–12

  31. In those days,

  32. John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea.

  33. Repent,

  34. for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

  35. For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah

  36. when he said,

  37. the voice of one crying in the wilderness,

  38. prepare the way of the Lord,

  39. make his path straight.

  40. Now John wore a garment of camel's hair

  41. and a leather belt around his waist,

  42. and his food was locusts and wild honey.

  43. Then Jerusalem and all Judea

  44. and all the region about the Jordan

  45. were going out to him,

  46. and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan,

  47. confessing their sins.

  48. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees

  49. coming to his baptism,

  50. he said to them,

  51. you brood of vipers,

  52. who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

  53. Bear fruit in keeping with repentance,

  54. and do not presume to say to yourselves,

  55. we have Abraham as our father.

  56. For I tell you,

  57. God is able from these stones

  58. to raise up children for Abraham.

  59. Even now,

  60. the axe is laid to the root of the trees.

  61. Every tree, therefore,

  62. that does not bear good fruit

  63. is cut down and thrown into the fire.

  64. I baptize you with water for repentance,

  65. but he who is coming after me

  66. is mightier than I,

  67. whose sandals I am not worthy to carry.

  68. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

  69. His winnowing fork is in his hand,

  70. and he will clear his threshing floor

  71. and gather his wheat into the barn,

  72. but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.

  73. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  74. You may be seated.

  75. Earlier this month,

  76. Bashar al-Assad,

  77. the Syrian dictator,

  78. was overthrown in a military coup

  79. and fled to Moscow.

  80. Some of you may have read that in the news.

  81. He and his father,

  82. who preceded him,

  83. ruled Syria under a brutal dictatorship

  84. for five decades.

  85. And when the victorious rebel group

  86. took over Damascus,

  87. thousands of Syrians

  88. stormed the capital to celebrate

  89. while also dismantling various statues

  90. of those former dictators

  91. and defacing their posters.

  92. However, not everyone celebrated

  93. when that happened.

  94. The Alawites,

  95. which is a Muslim minority sect

  96. that makes up about 10% of Syria,

  97. supported Bashar al-Assad

  98. because Assad was himself an Alawite.

  99. The majority of Syria's military

  100. and political elites,

  101. including their intelligence agencies

  102. and their paramilitaries,

  103. were all made up of Alawites.

  104. But now that there has been a regime change,

  105. these Alawites are fearing for their safety.

  106. They fear retribution,

  107. and they're calling for amnesty,

  108. for a general pardon and forgiveness

  109. of all political offenses

  110. that took place in the previous regime.

  111. Because one's fortunes can change overnight

  112. when there is a regime change,

  113. and it matters which side you're on.

  114. Matthew 3, 1-12 is a warning

  115. about a regime change that is underway.

  116. 2 Corinthians 4-4 describes Satan

  117. as the God of this world,

  118. and we can see why in this next chapter

  119. in the Gospel of Matthew,

  120. when the devil offers Jesus

  121. all the kingdoms of the world

  122. and their glory.

  123. Because under God's sovereign rule,

  124. Satan for a time has been allowed

  125. this authority on earth.

  126. As Matthew 12, 26 makes clear,

  127. Satan too has a kingdom,

  128. and this world is ruled,

  129. as Ephesians 2, 2 says,

  130. by this prince of the power of the air,

  131. the spirit that is now at work

  132. in the sons of disobedience.

  133. But Satan and his kingdom

  134. will eventually be destroyed

  135. and give way to the kingdom of God,

  136. to the consummation of the kingdom of God.

  137. And John the Baptist announces

  138. in this passage

  139. that that regime change,

  140. which will in the future be consummated,

  141. is already afoot,

  142. has already begun,

  143. because Christ the King has come.

  144. And so that's the main point

  145. of my message this morning,

  146. is repent,

  147. for Christ the King has come.

  148. Repent means turn.

  149. It says in Acts 26, 20,

  150. repent and turn to God,

  151. performing deeds

  152. in keeping with repentance.

  153. It means you do a U-turn

  154. from living for yourself

  155. to living for God,

  156. from living under the dominion of Satan

  157. to living under the dominion

  158. of Jesus Christ.

  159. It means you do a turn

  160. from living for your selfish,

  161. sinful desires

  162. to obeying God from the heart.

  163. And this message is urgent.

  164. This message is urgent

  165. because regime change

  166. is already afoot.

  167. Repent for Christ the King has come.

  168. And there are two reasons

  169. that Matthew gives us in this passage,

  170. because the kingdom is at hand,

  171. and secondly,

  172. because judgment is at hand,

  173. both brought by,

  174. ultimately,

  175. the Messiah.

  176. We were told at the end of chapter two

  177. that Jesus grew up in Nazareth,

  178. which is why he's called the Nazarene.

  179. Some time has now elapsed since that time,

  180. and Jesus is an adult,

  181. as you will see later in this chapter.

  182. He says in verse one,

  183. in those days,

  184. John the Baptist came preaching

  185. in the wilderness of Judea.

  186. Matthew includes the detail

  187. that John's preaching ministry

  188. took place in the wilderness of Judea,

  189. and this is not an incidental detail.

  190. Matthew is making the theological claim

  191. that John is the voice of one

  192. crying in the wilderness,

  193. as prophesied in Isaiah 40, verse three,

  194. which he quotes later in verse three.

  195. The wilderness has marked

  196. very important transitional seasons

  197. in the history of God's people.

  198. If you remember,

  199. it was in the wilderness

  200. that God first appeared to Moses

  201. and appeared to his people

  202. on Mount Sinai.

  203. It was in the wilderness,

  204. to the wilderness,

  205. that God led his people

  206. out of the exodus in Egypt.

  207. It was in the wilderness

  208. that people journeyed

  209. until they arrived

  210. and conquered the promised land

  211. that God had promised to give them.

  212. And so many of the prophets

  213. employed the imagery

  214. of God turning the wilderness

  215. into paradise

  216. because that's what God

  217. time and time again did

  218. in redemptive history.

  219. Isaiah 43, verse 19 says,

    Isaiah 43:19

  220. Behold, I am doing a new thing.

  221. Now it springs forth.

  222. Do you not perceive it?

  223. I will make in the wilderness

  224. and rivers in,

  225. I will make a way in the wilderness

  226. and rivers in the desert.

  227. Isaiah 44, verse three,

  228. For I will pour water

  229. on the thirsty land

  230. and streams on the dry ground.

  231. I will pour out my spirit

  232. upon your offspring

  233. and my blessing

  234. on your descendants.

  235. So when you see wilderness,

  236. in short,

  237. it's already,

  238. it's a place of transition,

  239. a place of promise,

  240. a place of anticipation.

  241. So when you hear wilderness,

  242. regime change,

  243. the smell of regime change

  244. is in the air.

  245. God is about to break in

  246. and establish his rule

  247. among his people.

  248. That there is a new prophet in town

  249. is already newsworthy.

  250. That he is preaching

  251. in the wilderness

  252. is already newsworthy.

  253. But what takes center stage

  254. here in this passage

  255. is not who John is

  256. or where he is,

  257. but what he says.

  258. He is preaching,

  259. which is even more important

  260. than his baptizing.

  261. He says in verse one,

  262. John the Baptist came

  263. preaching in the wilderness

  264. of Judea.

  265. And this is what he preached.

  266. Repent,

  267. for the kingdom of heaven

  268. is at hand.

  269. And this is not just

  270. the message

  271. of the previous era

  272. because it's the exact same message

  273. that Jesus preaches

  274. later in the gospel of Matthew

  275. in Matthew 4, 17.

  276. Repent,

  277. for the kingdom of heaven

  278. is at hand.

  279. We need to turn away from sin

  280. and turn toward Jesus

  281. in faith.

  282. Why?

  283. For,

  284. because,

  285. the kingdom of heaven

  286. is at hand.

  287. As the regime changes,

  288. you must pledge allegiance

  289. to the right king.

  290. The word kingdom

  291. in the Bible

  292. doesn't primarily refer

  293. to a place

  294. or a territory

  295. or a realm

  296. like when we speak

  297. of the kingdom

  298. of Saudi Arabia,

  299. which is I think

  300. the official name

  301. of the country.

  302. It rather refers

  303. to a dominion,

  304. to the kingship

  305. and the rulership

  306. of someone

  307. when it speaks

  308. of kingdom.

  309. And so,

  310. when it says

  311. that the kingdom

  312. of heaven

  313. is at hand,

  314. what it means

  315. is the king

  316. of heaven

  317. has begun

  318. his rule.

  319. The king

  320. of heaven

  321. is taking charge.

  322. Of course,

  323. there is a sense

  324. in which God

  325. has always reigned

  326. over all the earth.

  327. He is the sole creator

  328. and Lord

  329. of all the heavens

  330. and the earth.

  331. However,

  332. the Bible

  333. always acknowledges

  334. that the world

  335. is not the way

  336. it's supposed to be.

  337. Ever since

  338. the fall of humanity,

  339. there has been

  340. rebel forces

  341. at work

  342. in this world

  343. who resist

  344. God's rule.

  345. That's why

  346. in Zechariah 14,

  347. 5-9,

  348. it prophesied

  349. of the day

  350. of the Lord

  351. saying,

  352. then the Lord

  353. my God

  354. will come

  355. and all the holy

  356. ones with him.

  357. On that day,

  358. living water

  359. shall flow

  360. out from Jerusalem

  361. and the Lord

  362. will be king

  363. over all the earth.

  364. On that day,

  365. the Lord

  366. will be one

  367. and his name

  368. one.

  369. What does it mean

  370. that the Lord

  371. will be king

  372. over all the earth?

  373. He already is king

  374. over all the earth,

  375. but he will be king

  376. over all the earth

  377. in the sense

  378. that he will subdue

  379. all the rebel forces

  380. and bring all

  381. under his submission

  382. and rule.

  383. What does it mean

  384. that on that day,

  385. the Lord will be one

  386. and his name one?

  387. The Lord God

  388. is already one,

  389. but on that day,

  390. all peoples

  391. will be brought

  392. under the one name

  393. of God

  394. and every knee

  395. will bow

  396. and every tongue

  397. will confess.

  398. And so that's

  399. what it means

  400. here,

  401. that the kingdom

  402. of heaven

  403. is at hand,

  404. that the king

  405. of heaven

  406. has come.

  407. But Matthew

  408. is also unique

  409. in speaking

  410. of the kingdom

  411. of heaven

  412. rather than

  413. the more typical

  414. kingdom of God,

  415. which is the expression

  416. that Mark,

  417. Luke,

  418. and John

  419. prefer to use.

  420. Matthew,

  421. however,

  422. prefers to use

  423. kingdom of heaven

  424. even though he does

  425. on occasion

  426. use the expression

  427. kingdom of God

  428. and I think that's

  429. because he wants

  430. to emphasize

  431. that the kingdom

  432. that God brings about

  433. is not an earthly kingdom

  434. in contrast

  435. to the expectations

  436. of many of his fellow Jews,

  437. but rather it's

  438. a heavenly kingdom.

  439. And God is the one

  440. who rules in heaven.

  441. God is described

  442. as the God in heaven

  443. throughout the Old Testament

  444. and so it's Matthew

  445. saying that God

  446. for heaven himself

  447. will reign as king

  448. over his people.

  449. This expression

  450. kingdom of heaven

  451. is related

  452. also to another

  453. peculiar Matthew

  454. expression.

  455. It's the father

  456. in heaven,

  457. which is a common

  458. phrase for us.

  459. God is never called

  460. the father in heaven

  461. in the gospels

  462. of Luke and John.

  463. He is only called

  464. the father in heaven

  465. once in the gospel

  466. of Mark,

  467. but in Matthew

  468. he's called

  469. father in heaven

  470. 14 times.

  471. And how were we

  472. taught to pray

  473. to God

  474. in Matthew 6

  475. by Jesus?

  476. Our father in heaven,

  477. hallowed be your name,

  478. your kingdom come

  479. and your will be done

  480. on earth

  481. as it is in heaven.

  482. In short,

  483. when God's rule

  484. and kingship

  485. begin to take effect

  486. on earth

  487. as it is in heaven,

  488. that's when the kingdom

  489. of heaven

  490. has come.

  491. And when exactly

  492. is that going to happen?

  493. In the distant future.

  494. No,

  495. it says,

  496. the kingdom of heaven

  497. is at hand.

  498. That's a translation

  499. of a word

  500. that means to draw near,

  501. but it's in the perfect tense.

  502. If the word were in

  503. the present tense,

  504. we translate as

  505. the kingdom of heaven

  506. is drawing near,

  507. that it's approaching,

  508. but that it's still

  509. in the future.

  510. That's how we would

  511. translate it.

  512. But if it's in the perfect tense,

  513. we translate it as

  514. the kingdom of heaven

  515. has drawn near,

  516. meaning it has already

  517. come.

  518. It's not consummated yet.

  519. It's not completed yet,

  520. but it has already begun.

  521. God's reign

  522. has already begun.

  523. We know that

  524. from the parallel expression

  525. in Matthew 26,

  526. when Jesus says

  527. that the hour

  528. of his betrayal

  529. is at hand,

  530. that the hour

  531. of his betrayal

  532. has drawn near,

  533. and immediately

  534. in the following verse,

  535. Judas approaches

  536. and betrays Jesus.

  537. What Jesus is saying here

  538. is that the kingdom

  539. of heaven

  540. is at hand,

  541. meaning it's already here,

  542. and that's such

  543. an amazing thing

  544. to think about.

  545. Because God's people

  546. have been waiting

  547. for hundreds of years

  548. through exile

  549. and through pain

  550. and through oppression

  551. and through sin,

  552. waiting for the Messiah,

  553. the king,

  554. to come and deliver them.

  555. And John comes on the scene

  556. and starts saying,

  557. the kingdom of heaven

  558. has drawn near.

  559. It is at hand.

  560. I wanted to try

  561. to capture this excitement

  562. for you guys,

  563. and I was trying

  564. to think about

  565. what would be

  566. the best way to do that.

  567. I was thinking

  568. of a modern analogy,

  569. and the only thing

  570. I could think of

  571. was these trailer

  572. reaction videos

  573. that I saw

  574. of when the Star Wars

  575. rise of Skywalker

  576. came out.

  577. Have you guys

  578. seen this movie

  579. or have seen

  580. any of these trailers?

  581. I have not seen

  582. the movie,

  583. but I have seen

  584. the trailer reaction video.

  585. and this is a,

  586. I've learned recently,

  587. thanks to John's

  588. in particular,

  589. that Star Wars,

  590. not John the Baptist,

  591. John Buckley,

  592. that Star Wars

  593. has a rabid fan base.

  594. And in 2019,

  595. so every year,

  596. they have a Star Wars celebration.

  597. Do you guys know this?

  598. Every year.

  599. And in 2009,

  600. the Star Wars celebration

  601. was held in 2019

  602. in Chicago,

  603. and this gathered

  604. an estimated

  605. 65,000 fans.

  606. 65,000 fans

  607. gathered just

  608. to celebrate Star Wars.

  609. And when they showed

  610. the teaser trailer

  611. for the Rise of Skywalker

  612. for the first time,

  613. you can see on camera

  614. the reactions

  615. of tens of thousands

  616. of people there,

  617. and especially honing in,

  618. focusing in on people

  619. who were particularly expressive.

  620. And it's really

  621. something to watch.

  622. They are rubbing

  623. their hands in excitement.

  624. They're bobbing up and down.

  625. And there's collective gasps

  626. throughout the stadium.

  627. They're covering their mouths

  628. with their hands

  629. in amazed disbelief.

  630. Their eyes are wide

  631. with wonder.

  632. And there's spontaneous cheers.

  633. And then at the end of it,

  634. they celebrate

  635. by jumping up and down

  636. at the end.

  637. And in that reaction video,

  638. grown men with beards

  639. hyperventilate

  640. and cry.

  641. I'm not trying to mock you

  642. if you're one of those people.

  643. Because they've spent years

  644. waiting for that movie

  645. to come out,

  646. longing to satisfy

  647. their nostalgia

  648. and to fulfill

  649. their epic fantasies.

  650. And it's finally here.

  651. And they can't help

  652. but cry.

  653. Isn't it sad

  654. that people get

  655. more excited

  656. about the coming

  657. of the Rise of Skywalker,

  658. the movie,

  659. than the second coming

  660. of Jesus sometimes?

  661. If people can get

  662. that excited

  663. about the movie,

  664. think about the palpable

  665. excitement in the air

  666. and the anticipation

  667. of this momentous announcement

  668. that the kingdom of heaven

  669. is not in some distant future.

  670. It is here.

  671. It's at hand.

  672. It has drawn near.

  673. The long-awaited king

  674. has come.

  675. And Matthew tells us

  676. that we can trust

  677. John's announcement

  678. because he quotes

  679. Isaiah 40,

    Isaiah 40:3

  680. verse 3,

  681. in verse 3

  682. of this passage.

  683. For this is he

  684. who was spoken of

  685. by the prophet Isaiah

  686. when he said,

  687. the voice of one

  688. crying in the wilderness,

  689. prepare the way

  690. of the Lord,

  691. make his paths straight.

  692. Isaiah had prophesied

  693. that there would be

  694. a herald

  695. that precedes

  696. the coming of the Lord.

  697. And he will cry out

  698. in the wilderness.

  699. That's why John's there.

  700. Prepare the way

  701. of the Lord,

  702. make straight his paths.

  703. When a king of old

  704. marched out anywhere,

  705. there would always be

  706. heralds and guards

  707. that precede.

  708. And they would go out

  709. before him.

  710. They would open

  711. all the gates

  712. and open all the doors

  713. and they would clear

  714. out the streets

  715. and make people

  716. move out of the way,

  717. move things that are

  718. in the way,

  719. out of the way,

  720. clear the streets,

  721. say,

  722. make way for the king

  723. because it does not

  724. befit the dignity

  725. of a king

  726. to jostle through

  727. a crowd

  728. and to be pushed

  729. to and fro.

  730. So the herald

  731. goes before him

  732. to announce

  733. the coming of the king

  734. to prepare

  735. the way

  736. of the Lord.

  737. And that's how

  738. John views himself

  739. in relation to Jesus

  740. as a servant

  741. and a herald

  742. of the king,

  743. as a stagehand

  744. who works backstage

  745. to get the set ready

  746. so that the lead actor

  747. can come to the scene.

  748. Matthew concurs

  749. with John's assessment

  750. because even though

  751. John was prophesied

  752. of in scripture,

  753. as verse 3 makes clear,

  754. Matthew intentionally

  755. does not use

  756. the fulfillment formula

  757. that he always uses

  758. when speaking

  759. of how Jesus

  760. fulfilled the scriptures.

  761. The word fulfill

  762. and its variation

  763. is used 15 times

  764. to speak of the scriptures

  765. being fulfilled

  766. in the gospel of Matthew

  767. and every single time

  768. it refers to Jesus

  769. and no one else.

  770. This confirms

  771. what Ed said

  772. in his sermon

  773. last week

  774. that Jesus

  775. is the only

  776. expected person.

  777. Jesus,

  778. not John,

  779. even though

  780. he was prophesied of.

  781. Jesus, not John,

  782. is the promised one.

  783. Jesus, not John,

  784. is the expected one.

  785. Jesus, not John,

  786. is the coming one

  787. who fulfills

  788. the scriptures.

  789. Jesus.

  790. But we must not

  791. be fooled into thinking

  792. that John was a nobody.

  793. He's actually

  794. quite important.

  795. Look at verse 4.

  796. Now John wore

  797. a garment of camel's hair

  798. and a leather belt

  799. around his waist

  800. and his food

  801. was locusts

  802. and wild honey.

  803. Why does Matthew

  804. take a sudden interest

  805. in John's clothing

  806. preferences

  807. and diet?

  808. The Bible seldom

  809. notes what people

  810. are wearing

  811. so this detail

  812. is important.

  813. There was another

  814. prophet in history

  815. who dressed

  816. just like John.

  817. 2 Kings 1.8

  818. says that Elijah

  819. wore a garment

  820. of hair

  821. with a belt

  822. of leather

  823. about his waist.

  824. And Elijah, too,

  825. was associated

  826. with the wilderness

  827. and with the Jordan

  828. where John

  829. is baptizing.

  830. Elijah is arguably

  831. the greatest prophet

  832. of the Old Testament.

  833. That's why

  834. as the fountainhead

  835. of the prophets,

  836. I guess he appears

  837. alongside Moses

  838. representing the prophets

  839. and the law

  840. at Jesus' transfiguration

  841. later in the gospel.

  842. And moreover,

  843. it was prophesied

  844. in Malachi 4.5,

  845. Behold,

  846. I will send you

  847. Elijah the prophet

  848. before the great

  849. and awesome day

  850. of the Lord.

  851. So the messenger

  852. that comes

  853. to prepare

  854. the way for the Lord

  855. was expected

  856. to be

  857. a second Elijah.

  858. In fact,

  859. later in Matthew 17,

  860. Jesus himself

  861. confirms

  862. that John the Baptist

  863. is that prophesied

  864. Elijah.

  865. And Jesus says this

  866. about John the Baptist

  867. in Matthew 11.11,

  868. that among those

  869. born of woman,

  870. there has arisen

  871. no one greater

  872. than John the Baptist.

  873. Isn't that something

  874. to hear from Jesus?

  875. In other words,

  876. under the old covenant,

  877. before Jesus established

  878. the new covenant

  879. and poured out his spirit

  880. among his people,

  881. John the Baptist

  882. is the greatest

  883. of all human beings

  884. who ever lived

  885. in God's estimation.

  886. He's the goat.

  887. He's the goat.

  888. And he was popular.

  889. He says in verses 5-6,

  890. Then Jerusalem

  891. and all Judea

  892. and all the region

  893. about the Jordan

  894. were going out to him

  895. and they were baptized

  896. by him in the river

  897. of Jordan,

  898. confessing their sins.

  899. People are thronging

  900. to him

  901. from Jerusalem

  902. and all Judea

  903. and all the region

  904. about the Jordan

  905. and they're listening,

  906. paying attention to him

  907. and they're getting

  908. baptized by him.

  909. Josephus,

  910. who was a first century

  911. Roman Jewish historian,

  912. independently says this

  913. about John

  914. in one of his books.

  915. Now when many others

  916. came in crowds

  917. about John,

  918. for they were very

  919. greatly moved

  920. by hearing his words,

  921. Herod,

  922. who feared lest

  923. the great influence

  924. John had over the people

  925. might put it

  926. into his power

  927. and inclination

  928. to raise a rebellion,

  929. for they seemed ready

  930. to do anything

  931. he should advise,

  932. thought it best

  933. by putting him to death

  934. to prevent any mischief

  935. he might cause

  936. and not bring himself

  937. into difficulties.

  938. John was so popular

  939. and so influential

  940. that he put King Herod

  941. on notice.

  942. His crowds

  943. were flocking to him

  944. and hanging on his

  945. every word.

  946. People openly wondered,

  947. as you see in the

  948. Gospel of John,

  949. whether he might be

  950. the Christ,

  951. the Messiah.

  952. He is the greatest

  953. of all prophets

  954. in the Old Covenant.

  955. But look at what he says

  956. in verse 11.

  957. I baptize you

  958. with water

  959. for repentance,

  960. but he who is coming

  961. after me

  962. is mightier than I,

  963. whose sandals

  964. I am not worthy

  965. to carry.

  966. He will baptize you

  967. with Holy Spirit

  968. and fire.

  969. This is an amazing,

  970. shocking statement.

  971. Shoes are filthy things

  972. in general, right?

  973. If you walk around

  974. Cambridge enough,

  975. you've stepped on

  976. all kinds of dirt

  977. and pigeon poop

  978. and dog poop, right?

  979. But in the ancient Near East,

  980. shoes are even filthier

  981. because it's a desert climate,

  982. it's hot,

  983. people's feet get sweaty,

  984. and it's old streets

  985. where not just people

  986. and vehicles,

  987. but all kinds of animals

  988. are roaming the streets

  989. and dropping their excrements.

  990. Sandals,

  991. open-toed sandals,

  992. caked in dirt

  993. that require daily

  994. feet washing.

  995. So imagine

  996. these filthy sandals,

  997. they're so dirty

  998. that Jewish rabbinical teaching

  999. says this,

  1000. every service

  1001. which a slave performs

  1002. for his master,

  1003. every service

  1004. which a slave performs

  1005. for his master

  1006. shall a disciple do

  1007. for his teacher

  1008. except the losing

  1009. of sandal thongs.

  1010. So everything

  1011. that a slave does

  1012. for his master,

  1013. a student should do

  1014. to his teacher

  1015. is what the Jews

  1016. are saying.

1017. You should bring him water,

  1018. you should serve him,

1019. you should attend to him,

1020. you should listen to him,

  1021. you should do everything

  1022. like a slave

  1023. to his master

  1024. except

  1025. taking their sandals.

  1026. That's too lowly

  1027. even for the teacher

1028. and even for the student.

  1029. Only a slave

  1030. should do that.

1031. And yet John singles out

  1032. that particular

  1033. humiliating act

  1034. and says that

  1035. he is not worthy

  1036. to do that

  1037. for the coming Messiah.

  1038. Imagine

  1039. a guest coming

  1040. into your house,

  1041. plopping down

  1042. on a seat

  1043. and then sticking

1044. one of his foot out

  1045. expecting you

  1046. to remove

  1047. the shoes

  1048. and carry it off

  1049. somewhere.

  1050. What would you do?

  1051. You'd probably

  1052. stare them down

  1053. and say,

  1054. go take your own

  1055. shoes off.

1056. And then in your mind

  1057. you're probably

  1058. cursing their

  1059. insolence

  1060. and arrogance.

  1061. but imagine

  1062. when that

  1063. happened

  1064. instead of

  1065. responding

  1066. that way

  1067. you knelt down

  1068. with your head

  1069. bowed in shame

  1070. and said

  1071. I'm not worthy

  1072. to remove

  1073. those sandals.

  1074. that's

  1075. what John

  1076. is doing here.

  1077. John is a

  1078. humble man

1079. but if all we do

  1080. is marvel

  1081. at John's

  1082. humility here

  1083. then we're

  1084. missing the point

  1085. of this passage.

  1086. If I make

  1087. John the focus

  1088. of my sermon

  1089. then John himself

  1090. would be unhappy

  1091. because that's

  1092. precisely

  1093. the opposite

  1094. of what

  1095. John does

  1096. here.

  1097. The point

  1098. of this passage

  1099. is not

  1100. John's

  1101. humility

  1102. it is

  1103. Jesus'

  1104. glory.

  1105. John's

  1106. saying that

  1107. he's not

  1108. worthy to

  1109. carry

  1110. Jesus'

  1111. soiled

  1112. sandals

  1113. that's not

  1114. exaggerated

  1115. false

  1116. humility

  1117. that's

  1118. the cold

  1119. hard

  1120. fact

  1121. because he

  1122. is not

  1123. worthy

  1124. to carry

  1125. Jesus'

  1126. sandals.

  1127. But how

  1128. can someone

  1129. be unworthy

  1130. to carry

  1131. someone's

  1132. dirty

  1133. sandals?

  1134. If you

  1135. actually turn

  1136. to Isaiah

    Isaiah 40:3

  1137. 40 verse

  1138. 3 which

  1139. Matthew quotes

  1140. in verse

  1141. 3 I think

  1142. I have that

  1143. to show

  1144. and you

  1145. look at

  1146. the full

  1147. context

  1148. and it

  1149. is original

  1150. setting

  1151. he says

  1152. this

  1153. in the

  1154. wilderness

  1155. prepare

  1156. the way

  1157. of the

  1158. Lord

  1159. make

  1160. straight

  1161. in the

  1162. desert

  1163. a highway

  1164. for our

  1165. God.

  1166. Who is

  1167. John

  1168. making the

  1169. way for?

  1170. it's

  1171. God.

  1172. You'll

  1173. notice that

  1174. the word

  1175. Lord is

  1176. in all

  1177. caps

  1178. which means

  1179. it's not

  1180. the word

  1181. for Lord

  1182. that means

  1183. master

  1184. but rather

  1185. the proper

  1186. noun

  1187. the name

  1188. for God

  1189. in the

  1190. Old Testament

  1191. Yahweh.

  1192. Isaiah

  1193. prophesied

  1194. that John

  1195. would prepare

  1196. the way

  1197. not for

  1198. some

  1199. mere

  1200. mortal

  1201. only

  1202. but for

  1203. God

  1204. himself.

  1205. This is a

  1206. remarkable

  1207. Christological

  1208. claim because

  1209. Matthew is

  1210. saying that

  1211. that God

  1212. is Jesus

  1213. God in

  1214. human flesh

  1215. the divine

  1216. king.

  1217. John calls

  1218. Jesus the

  1219. one who is

  1220. coming after

  1221. me.

  1222. In verse

  1223. 11 later in

  1224. Matthew 11

  1225. through John

  1226. calls Jesus

  1227. the one who

  1228. is to

  1229. come.

  1230. You might

  1231. recognize that

  1232. phrase from

  1233. the book of

  1234. Revelation which

  1235. we were in

  1236. not that long

  1237. ago.

  1238. This expression

  1239. the one who

  1240. is to come

  1241. is laden

  1242. with theological

  1243. meaning.

  1244. 20th century

  1245. theologian

  1246. G.R.

  1247. Beasley Murray

  1248. entitled one of

  1249. his books

  1250. The Coming

  1251. of God

  1252. because the

  1253. coming of

  1254. God to

  1255. save his

  1256. people is

  1257. one of the

  1258. major themes

  1259. of the

  1260. Bible and

  1261. his coming

  1262. to his

  1263. people is

  1264. always

  1265. associated

  1266. with his

  1267. kingship.

  1268. He says in

  1269. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 33:2–5

  1270. 33 verses

  1271. 2-5

  1272. The Lord

  1273. came from

  1274. Sinai and

  1275. dawned from

  1276. Seir upon

  1277. us.

  1278. Thus the

  1279. Lord became

  1280. king in

  1281. Jeshurun when

  1282. the heads of

  1283. the people were

  1284. gathered all the

  1285. tribes of Israel

  1286. together.

  1287. It's because

  1288. God came to

  1289. rule over his

  1290. people that he

  1291. became king

  1292. over them.

  1293. Similarly he

  1294. says in

  1295. verses 10-13

  1296. Say among

  1297. the nations

  1298. the Lord

  1299. reigns.

  1300. Why do we

  1301. say that the

  1302. Lord reigns?

  1303. For he

  1304. comes.

  1305. For he

  1306. comes to

  1307. judge the

  1308. earth.

  1309. He will

  1310. judge the

  1311. world in

  1312. righteousness

  1313. and the

  1314. people in

  1315. his

  1316. faithfulness.

  1317. Isaiah 40

    Isaiah 40:10

  1318. verse 10

  1319. Behold the

  1320. Lord God

  1321. comes with

  1322. might and

  1323. his arm

  1324. rules for

  1325. him.

  1326. Malachi 3

  1327. 1

  1328. Behold I

  1329. send my

  1330. messenger and

  1331. he will

  1332. prepare the

  1333. way before

  1334. me and

  1335. the Lord

  1336. whom you

  1337. seek will

  1338. suddenly come

  1339. to his

  1340. temple and

  1341. the messenger

  1342. of the

  1343. covenant in

  1344. whom you

  1345. delight.

  1346. Behold he

  1347. is coming.

  1348. Over and

  1349. over and

  1350. over again

  1351. God is

  1352. described in

  1353. the scriptures

  1354. as the one

  1355. who comes

  1356. because our

  1357. God is not

  1358. a God who

  1359. stays at a

  1360. distance

  1361. spectating

  1362. with his

  1363. arms crossed

  1364. but God

  1365. who intervenes

  1366. the God

  1367. who comes

  1368. to save

  1369. to judge

  1370. to deliver

  1371. to reign

  1372. among his

  1373. people.

  1374. That's why

  1375. Jesus is

  1376. Emmanuel

  1377. God with

  1378. us.

  1379. And because

  1380. Jesus is the

  1381. one who is

  1382. and who

  1383. was and

  1384. is to

  1385. come because

  1386. Jesus is the

  1387. king of the

  1388. kingdom of

  1389. heaven, John

  1390. is right to

  1391. herald Jesus'

  1392. coming and

  1393. then get out

  1394. of the way.

  1395. Do you

  1396. know that

  1397. Christ the

  1398. king has

  1399. come?

  1400. Do you

  1401. relate to

  1402. Christ the

  1403. king rightly

  1404. as John

  1405. does?

  1406. Have you

  1407. pledged your

  1408. allegiance to

  1409. Jesus as his

  1410. loyal subject?

  1411. Have you

  1412. submitted every

  1413. aspect of your

  1414. life to him?

  1415. If we think

  1416. about it, we

  1417. give mere

  1418. mortals, sinful

  1419. human beings

  1420. more respect

  1421. than we give

  1422. to God

  1423. sometimes.

  1424. The quality

  1425. of attention

  1426. we commit

  1427. to God,

  1428. the amount

  1429. of space

  1430. we devote

  1431. to God

  1432. in our

  1433. thoughts

  1434. and in

  1435. our hearts

  1436. and our

  1437. affections,

  1438. the degree

  1439. of reverence

  1440. that we pay

  1441. to God,

  1442. the extent

  1443. of obedience

  1444. that we

  1445. give to

  1446. God,

  1447. make a

  1448. sad mockery

  1449. of the

  1450. surpassing

  1451. glory and

  1452. worth of

  1453. God the

  1454. king.

  1455. How

  1456. different our

  1457. lives would

  1458. be if we

  1459. just grasped

  1460. this truth of

  1461. how transcendent

  1462. and how

  1463. glorious our

  1464. king really

  1465. is.

  1466. How much

  1467. more grateful

  1468. we would

  1469. be.

  1470. How much

  1471. less grumbling

  1472. there would

  1473. be.

  1474. Consider the

  1475. examples of

  1476. the apostles

  1477. in the book

  1478. of Acts,

  1479. in Acts 5

  1480. 41, they

  1481. are unfairly

  1482. arrested and

  1483. then unfairly

  1484. tried and

  1485. then beaten

  1486. for proclaiming

  1487. Jesus, but

  1488. they don't

  1489. complain to

  1490. God saying,

  1491. you know,

  1492. God, I've

  1493. been so

  1494. faithful to

  1495. you, I

  1496. think I

  1497. deserve a

  1498. little better

  1499. than that.

  1500. No, it

  1501. says that

  1502. when they

  1503. were released,

  1504. they left

  1505. the presence

  1506. of the

  1507. council rejoicing

  1508. that they

  1509. were counted

  1510. worthy to

  1511. suffer this

  1512. honor for

  1513. this name

  1514. of Jesus.

  1515. How do you

  1516. respond like

  1517. that to

  1518. suffering and

  1519. persecution?

  1520. Because they

  1521. knew the

  1522. surpassing

  1523. worth of

  1524. Jesus.

  1525. They knew

  1526. that they

  1527. were not

  1528. worthy to

  1529. carry Jesus'

  1530. sandals, so

  1531. they rejoiced

  1532. to get to

  1533. do anything

  1534. for Jesus.

  1535. They rejoiced

  1536. to suffer

  1537. this honor

  1538. for the

  1539. name of

  1540. Jesus.

  1541. What about

  1542. you?

  1543. Of course,

  1544. everybody wants

  1545. to do

  1546. glorious and

  1547. spectacular and

  1548. honorable and

  1549. great things

  1550. for God.

  1551. Even

  1552. unbelievers

  1553. do that.

  1554. Some of

  1555. them.

  1556. Paul said

  1557. there are

  1558. some who

  1559. preach the

  1560. gospel for

  1561. selfish gain.

  1562. But are

  1563. you willing

  1564. to suffer

  1565. this honor

  1566. for Jesus'

  1567. sake?

  1568. are you

  1569. willing to

  1570. be ridiculed

  1571. and ostracized

  1572. for him?

  1573. To be

  1574. marked in

  1575. your workspace

  1576. and your

  1577. school as

  1578. that crazy

  1579. evangelical?

  1580. are you willing

  1581. to associate

  1582. with difficult

  1583. hard to love

  1584. people for

  1585. his sake?

  1586. Are you

  1587. willing to be

  1588. the least and

  1589. the last for

  1590. Jesus' name's sake?

  1591. Are you willing to

  1592. take backstage

  1593. instead of center

  1594. stage for

  1595. Jesus' sake?

  1596. Are you willing to

  1597. be forgotten for

  1598. his name's sake?

  1599. Are you willing to

  1600. be misunderstood

  1601. and disliked

  1602. for Jesus'

  1603. sake?

  1604. Are you willing

  1605. to be poor

  1606. for Jesus'

  1607. sake?

  1608. Are you willing

  1609. to do what

  1610. he wants you

  1611. to do

  1612. rather than

  1613. do what

  1614. you want

  1615. to do?

  1616. Are you

  1617. willing

  1618. if he gives

  1619. you the

  1620. honor to do

  1621. so,

  1622. to carry

  1623. his sandals?

  1624. if that's

  1625. all you

  1626. got to

  1627. do

  1628. in life?

  1629. I'm a

  1630. small man,

  1631. might not

  1632. get to do

  1633. much for

  1634. God in

  1635. this life,

  1636. but if I

  1637. can carry

  1638. his sandals

  1639. for the rest

  1640. of my life.

  1641. we must

  1642. repent

  1643. because the

  1644. kingdom is at

  1645. hand, but also

  1646. because judgment

  1647. is at hand.

  1648. He says in

  1649. verse 7,

  1650. but when he

  1651. saw many of

  1652. the Pharisees

  1653. and Sadducees

  1654. coming to his

  1655. baptism, he

  1656. said to them,

  1657. you brood

  1658. of vipers,

  1659. who warned

  1660. you to flee

  1661. from the

  1662. wrath to

  1663. come.

  1664. The Pharisees

  1665. and the

  1666. Sadducees

  1667. were the

  1668. two dominant

  1669. Jewish

  1670. religious sects

  1671. at that

  1672. time.

  1673. They

  1674. together

  1675. made up

  1676. the

  1677. Sanhedrin,

  1678. which is

  1679. the highest

  1680. ruling

  1681. class,

  1682. basically

  1683. the legal

  1684. and political

  1685. authority,

  1686. religious

  1687. authorities

  1688. among the

  1689. Jews.

  1690. But these

  1691. Sadducees

  1692. and the

  1693. Pharisees,

  1694. they were

  1695. at loggerheads

  1696. with each

  1697. other.

  1698. They didn't

  1699. really like

  1700. each other.

  1701. They disagreed

  1702. on many

  1703. theological

  1704. issues to

  1705. paint them

  1706. in very

  1707. broad

  1708. strokes.

  1709. The

  1710. Sadducees

  1711. were the

  1712. religious

  1713. liberals of

  1714. their day.

  1715. They were

  1716. the academic

  1717. and political

  1718. elites.

  1719. They were

  1720. in cahoots

  1721. with the

  1722. Roman

  1723. government.

  1724. They argued

  1725. that there

  1726. is no

  1727. resurrection

  1728. and no

  1729. angels,

  1730. no spirits.

  1731. But the

  1732. Pharisees,

  1733. who were the

  1734. religious

  1735. conservatives

  1736. of the day,

  1737. believed in

  1738. all those

  1739. things.

  1740. And they

  1741. preached strict

  1742. adherence to

  1743. the Old

  1744. Testament law.

  1745. They were

  1746. the

  1747. constitutional

  1748. originalists

  1749. of their

  1750. day.

  1751. They sought

  1752. to purge

  1753. and to

  1754. purify

  1755. the Jewish

  1756. people.

  1757. All that to

  1758. say they

  1759. didn't get

  1760. along.

  1761. And you

  1762. can see

  1763. that throughout

  1764. the Gospels

  1765. and the

  1766. book of

  1767. Acts.

  1768. But when

  1769. you find

  1770. the Sadducees

  1771. and the

  1772. Pharisees

  1773. making common

  1774. cause to

  1775. oppose

  1776. someone,

  1777. that's bad

  1778. news.

  1779. And that's

  1780. what you

  1781. see here.

  1782. And that's

  1783. what you

  1784. see again

  1785. later in

  1786. chapter 16

  1787. when they

  1788. come together

  1789. to test

  1790. Jesus.

  1791. So notice

  1792. it doesn't

  1793. say that

  1794. they came

  1795. to John

  1796. to get

  1797. baptized.

  1798. They came

  1799. to his

  1800. baptism.

  1801. They're on

  1802. a surveillance

  1803. mission.

  1804. They're watching

  1805. him,

  1806. assessing

  1807. him.

  1808. Maybe they're

  1809. curious to

  1810. see what

  1811. John has

  1812. to say.

  1813. His message

  1814. about

  1815. repentance,

  1816. purification

  1817. may have

  1818. resonated with

  1819. the Pharisees

  1820. somewhat.

  1821. But we

  1822. know that

  1823. they were

  1824. unrepentant

  1825. from John's

  1826. response.

  1827. And John

  1828. chastises them

  1829. severely.

  1830. He says,

  1831. you brood

  1832. of vipers

  1833. who warned

  1834. you to flee

  1835. from the

  1836. wrath to

  1837. come.

  1838. Vipers are

  1839. venomous

  1840. snakes.

  1841. And the

  1842. point of

  1843. this comparison

  1844. is that

  1845. these Jewish

  1846. religious leaders

  1847. are full

  1848. of deadly

  1849. poison.

  1850. Snakes

  1851. are scary,

  1852. right?

  1853. I mean,

  1854. most of us

  1855. are afraid

  1856. of snakes.

  1857. There's

  1858. good reason

  1859. for that.

  1860. If you

  1861. don't count

  1862. mosquitoes

  1863. who spread

  1864. diseases that

  1865. kill humans

  1866. but don't

  1867. actually kill

  1868. humans

  1869. themselves,

  1870. snakes are

  1871. still to this

  1872. day the

  1873. animal that

  1874. kills the

  1875. most human

  1876. beings.

  1877. it's the

  1878. deadliest

  1879. animal to

  1880. humans.

  1881. These

  1882. religious

  1883. leaders

  1884. were like

  1885. them.

  1886. Jesus

  1887. also will

  1888. later

  1889. call them

  1890. twice in

  1891. the gospel

  1892. of Matthew

  1893. brood of

  1894. vipers because

  1895. they were

  1896. hypocrites and

  1897. they shut

  1898. the kingdom of

  1899. heaven in

  1900. people's faces.

  1901. they spewed

  1902. out their

  1903. poison with

  1904. their deadly

  1905. deceptive

  1906. words and

  1907. they plotted

  1908. to kill

  1909. Jesus.

  1910. And so

  1911. John describes

  1912. them as a

  1913. brood of

  1914. poisonous snake

  1915. hatchlings that

  1916. are slithering

  1917. away at the

  1918. coming disaster.

  1919. Maybe when

  1920. you fell a

  1921. tree with an

  1922. axe and it

  1923. falls to their

  1924. habitat, they

  1925. slither away or

  1926. maybe there's a

  1927. fire that breaks

  1928. out and then

  1929. these snakes

  1930. slither away and

  1931. that's how John

  1932. describes these

  1933. Sadducees and

  1934. the Pharisees.

  1935. he warns them

  1936. in verses 8 and

  1937. 9, bear fruit in

  1938. keeping with

  1939. repentance and

  1940. do not presume to

  1941. say to yourselves

  1942. we have Abraham as

  1943. our father for I

  1944. tell you God is

  1945. able from these

  1946. stones to raise

  1947. up children for

  1948. Abraham.

  1949. The Pharisees and

  1950. the Sadducees were

  1951. not repentant

  1952. because and we

  1953. know that because

  1954. they bore no

  1955. fruit in keeping

  1956. with repentance.

  1957. they had not

  1958. turned back from

  1959. their sins.

  1960. They did not

  1961. have deeds that

  1962. showed that they

  1963. were truly

  1964. repentant.

  1965. I often use this

  1966. analogy when I

  1967. speak of repentance.

  1968. Imagine that your

  1969. friend is giving

  1970. you a ride and

  1971. you are using the

  1972. GPS to navigate for

  1973. him and you're

  1974. giving him

  1975. directions and then

  1976. he takes a wrong

  1977. turn and so he

  1978. needs to do you

  1979. turn and so you

  1980. tell your friend hey

  1981. you gotta turn

  1982. around.

  1983. There's no way to

  1984. get there another

  1985. way.

1986. You need to do a

  1987. U-turn and then

  1988. your friend says

  1989. oh okay thanks and

  1990. then he keeps

  1991. driving the same

  1992. way.

  1993. What would you do?

  1994. You would be

  1995. totally justified in

  1996. wondering whether

  1997. your friend heard

  1998. you or not.

  1999. Hey did you hear

  2000. what I said?

  2001. You have to turn

  2002. around or you will

  2003. never get there.

  2004. because if he

  2005. really heard and

  2006. if he really

  2007. believed what you

  2008. said he would

  2009. have turned

  2010. around.

  2011. Similarly someone

  2012. who turns back

  2013. from their sins

  2014. and turns toward

  2015. God will start

  2016. walking in a

  2017. different direction.

  2018. by this I don't

  2019. mean that you

  2020. never sin again.

  2021. Sure we take

  2022. wrong turns here

  2023. and there but

  2024. the fundamental

  2025. direction of the

  2026. person's life has

  2027. been reoriented.

  2028. They're not going

  2029. the same way

  2030. anymore.

  2031. That's repentance.

  2032. The Pharisees and

  2033. the Sadducees did

  2034. not repent.

  2035. Their confidence

  2036. lay instead on

  2037. a presumption.

  2038. We have Abraham

  2039. as our father.

  2040. Because of their

  2041. Jewish ethnic

  2042. heritage they

  2043. presumed that they

  2044. were safe.

  2045. We are the chosen

  2046. people of God.

  2047. We are the people

  2048. of the promise.

  2049. God will never

  2050. abandon us.

  2051. Don't you know?

  2052. God always keeps

  2053. his promises.

  2054. But they did not

  2055. remember that in

  2056. all of biblical

  2057. history God always

  2058. saves a faithful

  2059. remnant.

  2060. only the remnant

  2061. of Noah's family

  2062. was saved from

  2063. the flood judgment.

  2064. Not all of the

  2065. offspring of Abraham

  2066. but only the line

  2067. of Isaac inherited

  2068. the promise.

  2069. Only the remnant

  2070. of Caleb and

  2071. Joshua entered

  2072. the promised land.

  2073. After God's people

  2074. were exiled

  2075. Isaiah named

  2076. one of his sons

  2077. Shir Jashub which

  2078. means a remnant

  2079. shall return.

  2080. He prophesied that

  2081. while the tree of

  2082. faithless Israel

  2083. has fallen that

  2084. there still remains

  2085. a trunk of the

  2086. tree that is

  2087. faithful a remnant.

  2088. Micah referred to

  2089. God's people as the

  2090. remnant of Jacob.

  2091. Jeremiah prophesied

  2092. that when the Messiah

  2093. comes he will gather

  2094. the remnant of his

  2095. flock.

2096. It is for all these

  2097. reasons that Paul

  2098. concludes in Romans

  2099. 9.8 it is not

  2100. the children of the

  2101. flesh who are

  2102. children of God

  2103. but the children

  2104. of the promise

  2105. that are counted

  2106. as offspring.

  2107. The physical

  2108. national identity

  2109. of the Jews

  2110. has always been

  2111. subordinated to

  2112. their spiritual

  2113. identity.

  2114. It is the

  2115. spiritual children

  2116. of God who are

  2117. the remnant

  2118. true Israel.

  2119. That is why Jesus

  2120. warns the Jews

  2121. later in Matthew

  2122. 21.43

  2123. John's warning

  2124. here in verse 10

  2125. is urgent.

  2126. Even now the axe

  2127. is laid at the

  2128. root of the trees.

  2129. Every tree therefore

  2130. that does not bear

  2131. good fruit is cut

  2132. down and thrown

  2133. into the fire.

  2134. Do you hear that

  2135. axe at the root

  2136. of the tree?

  2137. If you have not

  2138. repented it is

  2139. urgent that you

  2140. hear that sound

  2141. of the axe at

  2142. the root of the

  2143. tree, thud.

  2144. Thud.

  2145. Thud.

  2146. Judgment is at

  2147. hand.

  2148. Don't ever

  2149. presume that you

  2150. are safe just

  2151. because of your

  2152. spiritual pedigree

  2153. or your family

  2154. background.

  2155. Such false

  2156. assurances abound

  2157. today among

  2158. Christians also.

  2159. How many times

  2160. have you heard

  2161. words like this?

  2162. I've been going

  2163. to church all

  2164. my life.

  2165. My parents

  2166. and great

  2167. parents,

  2168. grandparents

  2169. are Christians.

  2170. My dad's

  2171. a pastor.

  2172. I lead worship

  2173. at my church.

  2174. I'm baptized.

  2175. Everyone who

  2176. knows me thinks

  2177. I'm a mature

  2178. Christian.

  2179. I don't

  2180. remember a

  2181. time when I

  2182. wasn't a

  2183. Christian.

  2184. None of

  2185. that matters.

  2186. What matters

  2187. is that you

  2188. have truly

  2189. repented of

  2190. your sins

  2191. and trusted

  2192. in Jesus

  2193. Christ for

  2194. your salvation.

  2195. Have you

  2196. done that?

  2197. Are you

  2198. bearing fruit

  2199. in keeping

  2200. with repentance

  2201. or is there

  2202. unrepentant

  2203. sin in your

  2204. life?

  2205. Verse 6

  2206. teaches us

  2207. that the

  2208. people coming

  2209. to be baptized

  2210. by John

  2211. were confessing

  2212. their sins.

  2213. That's an

  2214. essential aspect

  2215. of repentance.

  2216. Is there

  2217. unconfessed

  2218. sin in your

  2219. life?

  2220. Have you

  2221. taken steps

  2222. to turn

  2223. away from

  2224. that sin

  2225. or are you

  2226. still hiding

  2227. and abetting

  2228. that sin?

  2229. Locking,

  2230. marching,

  2231. and lockstep

  2232. with that

  2233. sin still.

  2234. Guys,

  2235. I might not

  2236. know it,

  2237. but in every

  2238. church there

  2239. are people

  2240. who are

  2241. doing that.

  2242. That's why

  2243. this is so

  2244. urgent.

  2245. Judgment

  2246. is at

  2247. hand.

  2248. And the

  2249. unrighteous

  2250. will not

  2251. inherit the

  2252. kingdom of

  2253. God.

  2254. This is the

  2255. reason why

  2256. we are

  2257. a credo

  2258. Baptist

  2259. church.

  2260. I'm going

  2261. to a little

  2262. bit of

  2263. theology and

  2264. baptism here,

  2265. so stay

  2266. with me.

  2267. Credo

  2268. baptism means

  2269. believer's

  2270. baptism as

  2271. opposed to

  2272. paedo-baptism,

  2273. which is

  2274. infant baptism.

  2275. Because

  2276. Colossians 2

  2277. makes the

  2278. connection between

  2279. the circumcision

  2280. of Christ and

  2281. being buried

  2282. with Christ in

  2283. baptism,

  2284. some sincere

  2285. Christians,

  2286. many of whom

  2287. I respect,

  2288. argue that we

  2289. should baptize

  2290. infants in a

  2291. same way that

  2292. the Israelites

  2293. circumcised their

  2294. male infants.

  2295. They see

  2296. baptism as a

  2297. sign of the

  2298. covenant community

  2299. and that babies

  2300. too can be a

  2301. part of that.

  2302. However, in that

  2303. passage in

  2304. Colossians 2,

  2305. Paul does not

  2306. connect Christian

  2307. baptism to

  2308. Jewish

  2309. circumcision.

  2310. He connects

  2311. Christian baptism

  2312. to the

  2313. circumcision of

  2314. Christ,

  2315. which he

  2316. explicitly says

  2317. is not made

  2318. with hands.

  2319. In Ephesians 2,

  2320. 11-12,

  2321. Paul explicitly

  2322. says that

  2323. circumcision in

  2324. the flesh made

  2325. by hands is

  2326. obsolete.

  2327. And John the

  2328. Baptist here makes

  2329. it very clear to

  2330. the Pharisees and

  2331. the Sadducees that

  2332. they cannot presume

  2333. to enter the

  2334. kingdom of heaven

  2335. just because they

  2336. were born a

  2337. Jew.

  2338. just because

  2339. you had Abraham

  2340. as their father.

  2341. He says God is

  2342. able from stones,

  2343. from inanimate

  2344. dead stones to

  2345. raise up children

  2346. for Abraham.

  2347. How much more

  2348. than can God

  2349. make children of

  2350. Abraham out of

  2351. Gentiles and out

  2352. of all the

  2353. nations?

  2354. I think the

  2355. argument here is

  2356. compelling.

  2357. that your

  2358. ethnic or

  2359. biological,

  2360. physical heritage,

  2361. inheritance is

  2362. no credit or

  2363. merit to anybody

  2364. for salvation.

  2365. Everyone needs

  2366. to be converted.

  2367. Even all the

  2368. Jews need to

  2369. repent of their

  2370. sins.

  2371. This is

  2372. demonstrated in

  2373. a remarkable way

  2374. by John here

  2375. baptizing Jews.

  2376. He says in

  2377. verse 5 that

  2378. people came from

  2379. Jerusalem and

  2380. all the region

  2381. around the

  2382. Jordan.

  2383. these are all

  2384. Jewish regions.

  2385. The people who

  2386. are coming to

  2387. him are Jewish,

  2388. at least the

  2389. vast majority of

  2390. them.

  2391. Now, and some

  2392. historians, this

  2393. is not certain,

  2394. but some

  2395. historians think

  2396. that John's

  2397. practice of

  2398. baptizing people

  2399. like this once

  2400. is related to

  2401. the Jewish

  2402. practice of

  2403. proselyte

  2404. baptism, where

  2405. they take

  2406. Gentiles who

  2407. come and say,

  2408. I want to be a

  2409. Jew, and they

  2410. baptize them as

  2411. they convert to

  2412. Judaism.

  2413. It's possible

  2414. that John's

  2415. baptism preceded

  2416. it.

  2417. I don't think

  2418. anybody knows

  2419. for sure.

  2420. But even if it

  2421. is related to

  2422. Jewish proselyte

  2423. baptism, what

  2424. he is doing

  2425. here is a

  2426. radical departure

  2427. from that

  2428. practice because

  2429. in Jewish

  2430. proselyte

  2431. baptism, you

  2432. never baptize

  2433. Jews.

  2434. Jews don't

  2435. need to be

  2436. baptized.

  2437. It's the

  2438. Gentiles that

  2439. need to be

  2440. baptized.

  2441. But here is

  2442. John baptizing

  2443. throngs after

  2444. throngs of

  2445. Jews to

  2446. make the

  2447. provocative

  2448. point that

  2449. all people,

  2450. Jews or

  2451. Gentiles, must

  2452. repent for

  2453. Christ the

  2454. King has

  2455. come.

  2456. This is why

  2457. repentance is

  2458. always tied with

  2459. baptism in the

  2460. Bible.

  2461. Acts 2.38, when

  2462. Peter is preaching

  2463. at Pentecost, he

  2464. said, repent and

  2465. be baptized, every

2466. one of you in the

  2467. name of Jesus

  2468. Christ for the

  2469. forgiveness of

  2470. your sins, and

  2471. you will receive

  2472. the gift of the

  2473. Holy Spirit.

  2474. You cannot have

  2475. true, genuine

  2476. baptism apart from

  2477. repentance.

  2478. So John also

  2479. says in verse 11,

  2480. I baptize you with

  2481. water for repentance,

  2482. but he who is

  2483. coming after me is

  2484. mightier than I,

  2485. whose sandals I am

  2486. not worthy to carry.

  2487. He will baptize you

  2488. with the Holy Spirit

  2489. and fire.

  2490. For those who

  2491. truly repent of

  2492. their sins and

  2493. believe in Jesus,

  2494. and for those who

  2495. are baptized as an

  2496. outward profession

  2497. of their inward

  2498. faith, God promises

  2499. this wonderful gift

  2500. of the Holy Spirit.

  2501. This is not

  2502. something that John

  2503. the Baptist can

  2504. give, or a

  2505. pastor or any

  2506. other church leader

  2507. can give anyone.

  2508. It is God's

  2509. prerogative alone.

  2510. That is why John

  2511. says that only the

  2512. coming one who is

  2513. mightier than he

  2514. can baptize you in

  2515. the Holy Spirit and

  2516. fire.

  2517. It is the

  2518. individual's

  2519. responsibility to

  2520. repent of sin and

  2521. believe in Jesus.

  2522. It is the church's

  2523. communal responsibility

  2524. to then to assess

  2525. their credible

  2526. profession of faith

  2527. and baptize them in

  2528. the name of the

  2529. Father and Son and

  2530. the Holy Spirit.

  2531. And it is the

  2532. responsibility and

  2533. the prerogative of

  2534. God alone to impart

  2535. the living spirit of

  2536. God.

  2537. God.

  2538. This is why spirit

  2539. baptism is the

  2540. privilege of every

  2541. single believer.

  2542. This doesn't mean that

  2543. you can't be more

  2544. filled with the

  2545. Spirit.

  2546. We can be.

  2547. We are in fact

  2548. commanded to be filled

  2549. with the Spirit more

  2550. and more.

  2551. However, every

  2552. Christian, true

  2553. Christian, born in

  2554. Christian, is baptized

  2555. in the Holy Spirit

  2556. because that's what

  2557. 1 Corinthians 12, 13

  2558. says.

2559. For in one spirit we

  2560. are all baptized into

  2561. one body.

  2562. Jews or Greeks, slaves

2563. or free, and all were

2564. made to drink of one

  2565. spirit.

2566. But if you refuse to

  2567. repent, instead of

  2568. being sanctified by the

  2569. Holy Spirit, instead of

  2570. being consecrated by the

2571. Holy Spirit, you will be

  2572. consumed by the Holy

  2573. Spirit.

  2574. And that's what verse

  2575. 12 means.

  2576. His winnowing fork is

2577. in his hand, and he

  2578. will clear his

  2579. threshing floor and

  2580. gather his wheat into

  2581. the barn, but the

  2582. chaff he will burn

  2583. with unquenchable fire.

  2584. The farmers in those

  2585. days, when they harvest

  2586. the wheat, they will

2587. gather them all in the

  2588. threshing floor, and

2589. they will use a big

  2590. winnowing fork to scoop

2591. up bunches of the wheat,

2592. and they will fling it

2593. up into the air, and

  2594. while the heavy

2595. kernels of wheat fall to

  2596. the ground, the light

2597. chaff and all the husks

2598. and the gunk that you

2599. don't need will be blown

2600. off by the wind because

  2601. they're light.

  2602. And that's how they

  2603. separate the chaff from

2604. the wheat, and then the

  2605. wheat is gathered into

2606. the barn, and then the

  2607. chaff is gathered and

  2608. burned.

  2609. And that's the imagery

2610. that Jesus uses here of

  2611. divine judgment.

  2612. I know it's not a

  2613. comfortable subject, but

2614. it says so here in the

  2615. Bible in verse 7.

2616. Who warned you to flee

2617. from the wrath to come?

2618. divine wrath is a reality.

2619. Because God is just, because

2620. God is holy, he can't but

2621. have wrath towards sinners who

2622. have offended his glory and his

  2623. rule and his holiness.

  2624. That's why there's such urgency to

  2625. repent.

  2626. I can't improve on his words.

2627. I want to quote at length part of

2628. Jonathan Edwards' sermon from the

2629. 18th century preached during the

  2630. Great Awakening.

2631. A famous sermon he delivered in

  2632. Enfield, Connecticut called

2633. Sinners in the Hands of an Angry

  2634. God.

2635. And this is what he says.

2636. Your wickedness makes you, as it

  2637. were, heavy as lead.

2638. And to tend downwards with great

2639. weight and pressure towards hell.

2640. And if God should let you go, you

2641. would immediately sink and swiftly

2642. descend and plunge into the

  2643. bottomless gulf.

2644. And your healthy constitution and

2645. your own care and prudence and best

  2646. contrivance and all your

2647. righteousness would have no more

2648. influence to uphold you and keep

2649. you out of hell than a spider's

2650. web would have to stop a falling

  2651. rock.

2652. There are the black clouds of God's

2653. wrath now hanging directly over

2654. your heads, full of the dreadful

2655. storm and big with thunder.

2656. And were it not for the restraining

2657. hand of God, it would immediately

  2658. burst forth upon you.

2659. The sovereign pleasure of God for

2660. the present stays his rough wind.

2661. Otherwise it would come with fury

2662. and your destruction would come like

2663. a whirlwind and you would be like

2664. the chaff of the summer threshing

  2665. floor.

2666. The God that holds you over the pit

2667. of hell, much as one holds a spider

2668. or some loathsome insect over the

2669. fire, abhors you and is dreadfully

  2670. provoked.

2671. His wrath towards you burns like fire.

2672. He looks upon you as worthy of nothing

2673. else but to be cast into the fire.

2674. He is of purer eyes than to bear to

2675. have you in his sight.

2676. You are 10,000 times more abominable

2677. in his eyes than the most hateful

2678. venomous serpent is in ours.

2679. You have offended him infinitely more

2680. than ever a stubborn rebel did his

  2681. prince.

2682. And yet it is nothing but his hand

2683. that holds you from falling into the

  2684. fire every moment.

2685. It is to be ascribed to nothing else,

2686. that you did not go to hell the last

2687. night, that you were suffered to awake

2688. again in this world after you close your

  2689. eyes to sleep.

2690. And there's no other reason to be

2691. given why you have not dropped into

2692. hell since you arose in the morning,

2693. but that God's hand has held you up.

  2694. It's a frightening description of God's

  2695. wrath.

2696. And it is true because as Habakkuk 1.3

2697. says, God is of purer eyes than to see

  2698. evil.

2699. He cannot even see evil.

2700. He cannot condone or tolerate evil.

2701. So why does God hold

2702. even unrepentant sinners up this very

  2703. moment?

  2704. 2 Peter 3.9 says,

2705. The Lord is patient toward you,

2706. not wishing that any should perish,

2707. but that all should reach repentance.

2708. every hour that you live,

2709. every minute of your life,

2710. every second of your life is a

2711. gracious opportunity from God to

  2712. repent of your sins.

2713. And if you have yet to repent and turn

2714. to Jesus, then let me tell you how to

  2715. do that.

2716. Romans 5.8-9, we read from earlier in

  2717. the assurance of pardon.

2718. God shows his love for us in this,

2719. that while we were still sinners,

  2720. Christ died for us.

2721. Since therefore we have not been

  2722. justified by his blood,

2723. much more shall we be saved by him

2724. from the wrath of God.

2725. How are we saved from this fiery wrath

  2726. of God?

2727. It's the blood of Jesus.

2728. The death that Jesus died on the cross

  2729. in our place,

2730. in the place of sinners.

2731. He was pierced for our transgressions,

  2732. crushed for our iniquities,

2733. and God has laid upon him

  2734. the chastisement,

2735. the punishment that we deserved.

2736. This is what it means when the Bible

2737. speaks of Jesus as the propitiation

  2738. that God put forth.

2739. Propitiation to propitiate is to

  2740. satisfy God's wrath.

  2741. 1 John 4.10 says,

  2742. In this is love,

2743. not that we have loved God,

2744. but that he loved us

2745. and sent his son to be

2746. the propitiation for our sins.

2747. Why did God send Jesus

2748. to be the propitiation for our sins?

  2749. Because God loved us,

  2750. because God loved sinners,

2751. so that he might provide a way

2752. for Jesus to satisfy his just

  2753. and holy wrath.

  2754. David Wells, Christian theologian,

  2755. summarizes it this way.

2756. Man is alienated from God by sin,

2757. and God is alienated from man by wrath.

2758. It is in the substitutionary death of Christ

2759. that sin is overcome and wrath averted,

2760. so that God can look on man

  2761. without displeasure,

2762. and man can look on God without fear.

  2763. Sin is expiated,

  2764. and God is propitiated.

2765. This is an amazing reality.

  2766. Think about that wrath,

2767. and fire wrath of God,

2768. and then look down a little bit,

2769. and I will end with this,

2770. and at the end of chapter three,

2771. at what God says of his son, Jesus,

  2772. after he is baptized.

  2773. In verse 17,

2774. this is my beloved son

2775. with whom I am well pleased.

2776. that's the word that Jesus deserved to hear.

2777. That's the word that Jesus should have heard

  2778. all his life.

  2779. Instead, on the cross,

2780. Jesus faces the unrelenting, fiery wrath

  2781. of God the Father

2782. because he is taking our place

2783. so that in his death and resurrection,

2784. God can look upon us with pleasure

  2785. and say,

2786. this is my beloved son,

2787. because we're all in Jesus.

2788. We're called sons sometimes in the Bible.

2789. This is my beloved son

2790. son in whom I am well pleased.

2791. That's what God now says

2792. over every single one of his people

  2793. who have turned,

  2794. who have repented,

  2795. and trusted in Jesus.

  2796. Let's pray.

  2797. Father,

  2798. Father,

  2799. I confess that I am weak.

2800. I have preached your gospel,

2801. but I cannot make a single person repent.

  2802. And I cannot make

2803. a single person receive the Holy Spirit.

2804. But I trust in you,

  2805. O Lord God,

  2806. and your son, Jesus,

  2807. the coming one,

  2808. who is mightier,

2809. who baptizes in the Holy Spirit and fire.

2810. Lord, go through this room.

  2811. Save every single soul.

  2812. Baptize every single one

2813. in the Holy Spirit and fire.

2814. And for all those who are already,

  2815. who are already saved,

2816. all those who already belong to you

2817. and have repented of their sins,

2818. assure them of the great confidence

2819. that they now have in Jesus,

2820. that they are your beloved child.

  2821. that Jesus' perfect righteousness

  2822. covers us.

2823. In Jesus' name we pray.

  2824. Amen.
