  1. Good morning, everyone. Please open up your Bibles to Matthew chapter 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  2. For those of you who are new, who haven't met me, my name is Sean, and I'm one of the pastors of

  3. Trinity Cambridge Church, and it's my great joy and honor to preach God's Word to you,

  4. the beloved body of Christ, this morning. If you don't have a Bible, please raise your hands,

  5. and we'd love to bring you a copy of a Bible you could have and use.

  6. We're in chapter 5 of Matthew. We've been going through this since beginning of December, this book.

  7. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  8. Heavenly Father,

  9. my words are inadequate, but your Word

  10. never returns empty.

  11. So, Lord, now may the preaching of your Word this morning accomplish its purposes.

  12. May it exalt

  13. your glory and your name.

  14. may it humble the pride of man.

  15. May it

  16. lead us to proper

  17. mourning

  18. and poverty of spirit in light of your

  19. holiness.

  20. So that we might experience

  21. the true joy of salvation.

  22. open

  23. our ears.

  24. Give us ears to hear

  25. and hearts to receive.

  26. In Jesus' name we pray.

  27. Amen.

  28. Amen.

  29. If you are able, please stand

  30. as I read God's Word.

  31. Let's honor God together by sending

  32. yet the reading of God's Word from Matthew 5,

    Matthew 5:1–12

  33. verses 1 to 12.

  34. I'm going to just preach the first four verses today,

  35. but I will read all 12 verses.

  36. Matthew 5, 1 to 12.

  37. Seeing the crowds,

  38. he went up on the mountain,

  39. and when he sat down,

  40. his disciples came to him.

  41. And he opened his mouth

  42. and taught them,

  43. saying,

  44. Blessed are the poor in spirit,

  45. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  46. Blessed are those who mourn,

  47. for they shall be comforted.

  48. Blessed are the meek,

  49. for they shall inherit the earth.

  50. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,

  51. for they shall be satisfied.

  52. Blessed are the merciful,

  53. for they shall receive mercy.

  54. Blessed are the pure in heart,

  55. for they shall see God.

  56. Blessed are the peacemakers,

  57. for they shall be called sons of God.

  58. Blessed are those who are persecuted

  59. for righteousness' sake,

  60. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  61. Blessed are you when others revile you

  62. and persecute you

  63. and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely

  64. on my account.

  65. Blessed are the people of God.

  66. Rejoice and be glad,

  67. for your reward is great in heaven,

  68. for so they persecuted the prophets

  69. who are before you.

  70. God's holy and authoritative word.

  71. You may be seated at this time.

  72. Herbert George Wells, H.G. Wells,

  73. might be best known for his science fiction writing,

  74. including War of the Worlds,

  75. but he was also a prolific writer of history.

  76. And in 1935, as a historian,

  77. he wrote a newspaper article entitled,

  78. Greatest in History.

  79. Somehow I was able to find the actual clipping of this online.

  80. He shared this opinion,

  81. his opinion,

  82. about the greatest figures in the history of mankind.

  83. And even though he was an atheist,

  84. H.G. Wells argued that Jesus is the single individual

  85. who has, quote,

  86. left the most permanent impression on the world.

  87. This is what he says.

  88. Jesus is, I think,

  89. a quite cardinal figure in human history,

  90. and it will be long before Western men decide,

  91. if ever they do decide,

  92. to abandon his life as the turning point

  93. in their reckoning of time.

  94. We do not know as much about him

  95. as we would like to know,

  96. but the four Gospels agree

  97. in giving us a picture

  98. of a very definite personality.

  99. They carry a conviction of reality.

  100. To assume that he never lived,

  101. that the accounts of his life are inventions,

  102. is more difficult

  103. and raises far more problems for the historian

  104. than to accept the essential elements

  105. of the Gospel stories as fact.

  106. Now, it is interesting and significant

  107. that a historian,

  108. without any theological bias, whatever,

  109. should find that he cannot portray

  110. the progress of humanity honestly

  111. without giving a foremost place

  112. to a penniless teacher from Nazareth.

  113. Yet more than 1900 years later,

  114. a historian like myself,

  115. who does not even call himself a Christian,

  116. finds the picture centering irresistibly

  117. around the life and character

  118. of this most significant man.

  119. It is one of the most revolutionary changes

  120. of outlook that has ever stirred

  121. and changed human thought.

  122. The world began to be a different world

  123. from the day that doctrine was preached.

  124. In our passage today,

  125. Jesus opens his mouth

  126. to preach his first recorded sermon

  127. in all the Gospels.

  128. This is that dynamite doctrine

  129. that changed the world

  130. and changed human thought forever.

  131. It says in verses 1 to 2,

  132. Seeing the crowds,

  133. he went up on the mountain,

  134. and when he sat down,

  135. his disciples came to him,

  136. and he opened his mouth

  137. and taught them, saying,

  138. To open one's mouth

  139. is an Old Testament idiom.

  140. It's a Hebrew idiom

  141. that precedes significant pronouncements.

  142. This is not just us chatting.

  143. This is the Messianic manifesto.

  144. And in the same way

  145. that Moses went up on a mountain

  146. to bring down the Ten Commandments

  147. which told the old covenant people of God

  148. how they ought to live,

  149. now Jesus here goes up on the mountain

  150. and then teaches us

  151. how the citizens of the kingdom of heaven

  152. ought to live,

  153. what they are really like.

  154. So the mountain setting is not incidental.

  155. And the audience is focused.

  156. The crowds are in the background,

  157. as you can see in this passage.

  158. They're in the background eavesdropping,

  159. but the primary audience of Jesus' teaching

  160. is not the crowds.

  161. It's his disciples

  162. to whom we were just introduced

  163. in the preceding chapter.

  164. It says in verse 1,

  165. When he sat down,

  166. his disciples came to him.

  167. That's interesting,

  168. some cultural background

  169. because in our context,

  170. when people want to teach,

  171. they stand up.

  172. When preachers give their sermon,

  173. they stand up.

  174. When professors give their lectures,

  175. they stand up.

  176. But in this Jewish ancient context,

  177. when teachers are about to teach,

  178. they sit down.

  179. And then all their disciples come around,

  180. gather around to listen.

  181. And that is what's going on.

  182. The Son of God,

  183. the incarnate Word of God,

  184. is now speaking.

  185. This is what it looks like

  186. to follow Jesus.

  187. This is what Christian discipleship looks like.

  188. This is what the kingdom of heaven

  189. is all about.

  190. This is what it means

  191. to be an alternate society,

  192. a counterculture

  193. to the kingdoms of this world

  194. that Jesus just rejected

  195. when he was being tempted

  196. by the devil in Matthew 4.8.

  197. This sermon is popularly known

  198. as the Sermon on the Mount,

  199. which is the first

  200. of five extended discourses

  201. of Jesus

  202. in the Gospel of Matthew.

  203. The Gospel of Matthew

  204. is actually structured

  205. around these five discourses.

  206. I think I have an outline

  207. for you to see.

  208. Chapters 5 to 7

  209. is the first one,

  210. a discourse on discipleship.

  211. Chapter 10

  212. is the discourse on mission.

  213. Chapter 13

  214. is the discourse on the kingdom.

  215. Chapter 18

  216. is the discourse on the church.

  217. And finally,

  218. 24 to 25

  219. is the discourse on the end times.

  220. After the conclusion

  221. of each of these discourses,

  222. we find some variation

  223. of this phrase.

  224. When Jesus had finished

  225. these sayings,

  226. that's why we call them discourses,

  227. and that's how we know

  228. that this is

  229. an intentional structure

  230. that Matthew has placed,

  231. organized his Gospel around.

  232. The first of these five,

  233. which we're starting today,

  234. is the longest.

  235. And we're at the beginning

  236. of that discourse,

  237. known famously as

  238. the B attitudes.

  239. Which means blessedness,

  240. or happiness.

  241. The first definition

  242. of the word blessed,

  243. you find,

  244. in the Merriam-Western Dictionary,

  245. is to be held in reverence,

  246. or to be honored in worship.

  247. So there is a Greek word

  248. that means exactly that,

  249. and it's usually used

  250. to describe God

  251. as one who is blessed,

  252. held in honor,

  253. honored in worship.

  254. For example,

  255. Luke 1, 6, 8,

  256. blessed be the Lord God

  257. of Israel,

  258. for he has visited

  259. and redeemed his people.

  260. And that means,

  261. let God be held in honor

  262. and worshiped.

  263. Blessed be the Lord God.

  264. But that is not the Greek word

  265. that is used here.

  266. There's another word

  267. that's used here,

  268. and it has a different nuance.

  269. It is translated fortunate

  270. in Acts 26, verse 2,

    Acts 26:2

  271. when Paul says,

  272. I consider myself fortunate

  273. that I,

  274. it is before you,

  275. King Agrippa,

  276. I am going to make my defense today

  277. against all the accusations

  278. of the Jews.

  279. The same word is translated happy

  280. in 1 Corinthians 7, 39-40.

  281. A wife is bound to her husband

  282. as long as he lives,

  283. but if her husband dies,

  284. she is free to be married

  285. to whom she wishes,

  286. only in the Lord.

  287. You're wondering,

  288. why is this related?

  289. And then it says,

  290. yet in my judgment,

  291. she is happier

  292. if she remains as she is.

  293. That's the same word

  294. that is used here in Matthew.

  295. Happy.

  296. Fortunate.

  297. I don't believe in luck,

  298. but in modern parlance,

  299. it's similar to how people

  300. use the word luck

  301. when they say,

  302. how lucky are you?

  303. How lucky that you have that job?

  304. How lucky that you are married

  305. to that woman?

  306. How lucky?

  307. That's similar to how

  308. the word blessed is used here.

  309. How happy?

  310. This is the person

  311. that is to be congratulated.

  312. How happy is this person?

  313. How blessed and fortunate

  314. is this person?

  315. Do you know that God

  316. wants you to be happy?

  317. Christian author Randy Alcorn

  318. captures a common misconception

  319. when he says,

  320. being holy is something

  321. we can do in God's presence,

  322. but being happy is something

  323. we're more comfortable doing

  324. behind his back,

  325. which isn't possible.

  326. But truth be told,

  327. there is nothing wrong

  328. with pursuing happiness.

  329. Fourth century,

  330. Pastor Augustine wrote,

  331. every man,

  332. whatsoever his condition,

  333. desires to be happy.

  334. The problem is not

  335. with the pursuit of happiness,

  336. but with the pursuit of happiness

  337. apart from God.

  338. The problem is not

  339. the pursuit of happiness itself.

  340. Do you know whom

  341. the Bible describes

  342. in the foremost way

  343. as being happy

  344. or blessed?

  345. It's God himself.

  346. That same Greek word

  347. used here in Matthew

  348. is used to describe God

  349. in the cult worship

  350. we read in 1 Timothy 1-11,

  351. the glory of the blessed God,

  352. the glory of the happy God.

  353. 1 Timothy 6.15 says,

  354. God is the blessed

  355. and only sovereign,

  356. the king of kings

  357. and lord of lords.

  358. God is the happy

  359. and only sovereign,

  360. the king of kings

  361. and lord of lords.

  362. Our God

  363. is supremely happy.

  364. He is sovereignly happy.

  365. He is eternally happy.

  366. And because God

  367. is the original

  368. happy God,

  369. the happy one,

  370. only those

  371. who through faith

  372. in Jesus Christ

  373. have become partakers

  374. in the divine nature

  375. as it says

  376. in 2 Peter 1-4

  377. can be truly happy.

  378. It is

  379. a spiritual

  380. impossibility

  381. for any human

  382. to be happy

  383. apart from God.

  384. So it says

  385. in Psalm 89-15,

  386. happy are the people

  387. who walk,

  388. O Lord,

  389. in the light

  390. of your face.

  391. C.S. Lewis

  392. puts it this way,

  393. God made us,

  394. invented us

  395. as a man invents

  396. an engine.

  397. A car is made

  398. to run on petrol

  399. and it would not run

  400. properly on anything else.

  401. Now God designed

  402. the human machine

  403. to run on himself.

  404. He himself

  405. is the fuel

  406. our spirits

  407. were designed

  408. to burn

  409. or the food

  410. our spirits

  411. were designed

  412. to feed on.

  413. There is no other.

  414. That is why

  415. it is just no good

  416. asking God

  417. to make us happy

  418. in our own way.

  419. God cannot

  420. give us

  421. a happiness

  422. and peace

  423. apart from himself

  424. because it is not there.

  425. There is no such thing.

  426. In these

  427. eight beatitudes,

  428. Jesus tells us

  429. that what true happiness

  430. on earth

  431. looks like.

  432. This is what it looks like

  433. to find true happiness

  434. as you follow Jesus.

  435. If you are a stickler

  436. and you counted

  437. the word blessed

  438. in this passage already

  439. and you counted

  440. that it occurs

  441. nine times

  442. and not eight,

  443. I think that is because

  444. verse 11 and 12

  445. are an expansion

  446. of beatitude number eight

  447. in verse 10

  448. because it continues

  449. the theme

  450. of being persecuted

  451. and because verses

  452. 11 and 12

  453. deviate from the standard

  454. third person form

  455. and it starts saying

  456. blessed are you

  457. instead of blessed are they.

  458. so I think it's part

  459. of beatitude number eight

  460. so I think there's eight

  461. but that's really

  462. not that important.

  463. We can subdivide

  464. the eight beatitudes

  465. into two halves.

  466. The first half

  467. ends with the mention

  468. of righteousness.

  469. Blessed are those

  470. who hunger and thirst

  471. for righteousness

  472. and then the reward

  473. is for theirs

  474. is the kingdom.

  475. Oh sorry,

  476. that's the reward

  477. is the same

  478. from the beginning

  479. and the end.

  480. And likewise,

  481. the second half

  482. ends with the mention

  483. of righteousness.

  484. Blessed are those

  485. who are persecuted

  486. for righteousness sake.

  487. And then the first half

  488. begins with the reward

  489. for theirs

  490. is the kingdom of heaven

  491. and the second half

  492. ends with the reward

  493. for theirs

  494. is the kingdom of heaven.

  495. So once you discern

  496. this pattern

  497. that there are two halves

  498. you can also see

  499. that those two halves

  500. have distinctive themes.

  501. The first four beatitudes,

  502. the poor in spirit,

  503. those who mourn,

  504. the meek,

  505. those who hunger

  506. and thirst for righteousness

  507. all describe being empty

  508. or devoid of something.

  509. you lack wealth

  510. or you lack pride

  511. in spirit.

  512. You mourn the lack

  513. of loss of something.

  514. You lack action

  515. or initiative

  516. if you're meek.

  517. You hunger

  518. and thirst

  519. because you lack something

  520. and you need more of it.

  521. But the last four beatitudes,

  522. merciful,

  523. pure in heart,

  524. peacemakers,

  525. persecuted for righteousness sake,

  526. they all describe

  527. being full

  528. or overflowing

  529. with something.

  530. You are full of mercy

  531. so you show mercy

  532. to others.

  533. Your heart is full

  534. of purity,

  535. it's undivided.

  536. So you're pure in heart,

  537. you're full

  538. of the peace of Christ

  539. and so you make peace

  540. with others.

  541. You no longer just hunger

  542. and thirst

  543. for righteousness,

  544. you are full

  545. of righteousness

  546. and so you are

  547. persecuted

  548. on account of it.

  549. So there is

  550. a logical flow

  551. to these beatitudes

  552. from the first half

  553. to the second half.

  554. Each of these beatitudes

  555. is so revolutionary

  556. and countercultural

  557. that we have decided

  558. as a leadership team

  559. to slow down

  560. and take one

  561. or two beatitudes

  562. per week

  563. in similar to how

  564. we did the 10 commandments

  565. when we were

  566. in Exodus 20.

  567. And today I'm going

  568. to go over

  569. just beatitudes one

  570. and two

  571. because they're very

  572. closely related

  573. in verse three

  574. and four.

  575. Blessed are the poor

  576. in spirit

  577. for theirs

  578. is the kingdom

  579. of heaven.

  580. Blessed are those

  581. who mourn

  582. for they shall

  583. be comforted.

  584. And I think

  585. the main point

  586. that God's driving

  587. home with this,

  588. these two beatitudes

  589. is that only

  590. the spiritually poor

  591. and sad

  592. possess

  593. the kingdom

  594. of heaven.

  595. It's a counterintuitive

  596. and paradoxical statement.

  597. How in the world

  598. is it blessed

  599. or happy

  600. to be poor

  601. in spirit

  602. and to mourn?

  603. If I were to

  604. compose

  605. the beatitudes

  606. according to

  607. the moral values

  608. and the cultural

  609. norms of

  610. our world,

  611. I think it would

  612. look quite different.

  613. So I tried

  614. writing it down

  615. and this is what

  616. I came up with.

  617. I think

  618. blessed are the

  619. wealthy in spirit

  620. for theirs

  621. is the kingdom

  622. of earth.

  623. Blessed are those

  624. who laugh

  625. for they shall

  626. forget their troubles.

  627. Blessed are the

  628. assertive

  629. for they shall

  630. inherit the earth.

  631. Blessed are those

  632. who are full

  633. of righteousness

  634. and signal

  635. their virtue

  636. for they shall

  637. be affirmed.

  638. Blessed are the

  639. justice warriors

  640. for they shall

  641. execute justice.

  642. Blessed are the

  643. double-hearted

  644. for they shall

  645. see men

  646. in high places.

  647. Blessed are the

  648. war makers

  649. for they shall

  650. be called gods.

  651. Blessed are those

  652. who are praised

  653. for their worldliness

  654. for theirs

  655. is the kingdom

  656. of earth.

  657. I think

  658. if we're honest

  659. with ourselves

  660. we'd agree

  661. that we have

  662. assimilated

  663. many of these

  664. worldly attitudes

  665. into our own

  666. morality

  667. and our own

  668. outlook on life.

  669. But Jesus'

  670. beatitudes

  671. turn all these

  672. things upside

  673. down on their

  674. heads.

  675. sure

  676. maybe the rich

  677. and powerful

  678. possess the

  679. kingdom of earth

  680. now to a certain

  681. degree

  682. but it's the

  683. poor in spirit

  684. who possess

  685. the kingdom

  686. of heaven.

  687. All of the

  688. beatitudes

  689. command

  690. the exact

  691. attitude

  692. and behavior

  693. that the world

  694. views with

  695. contempt.

  696. These are the

  697. people,

  698. the beatitudes

  699. in Matthew 5

  700. are the people

  701. that the world

  702. would view

  703. as the losers

  704. of the world.

  705. the scums

  706. of the world.

  707. No wonder

  708. Jesus often

  709. refers to his

  710. disciples

  711. throughout the

  712. gospel of Matthew

  713. as little ones.

  714. To be a

  715. Christian

  716. is to be

  717. a little one.

  718. A small one.

  719. Poor in spirit.

  720. The word

  721. poor

  722. here is a

  723. key word

  724. throughout the

  725. Bible

  726. and occurs

  727. many times

  728. in the Old

  729. Testament

  730. and it

  731. often refers

  732. to people

  733. who are

  734. literally

  735. poor

  736. but also

  737. often refers

  738. to the

  739. people of

  740. God.

  741. People of

  742. God are

  743. consistently

  744. described as

  745. those who

  746. are poor.

  747. Psalm 9

  748. 12 says

  749. for the

  750. needy shall

  751. not always

  752. be forgotten

  753. and the

  754. hope of

  755. the poor

  756. shall not

  757. perish

  758. forever.

  759. Often

  760. the people

  761. of God

  762. were financially

  763. poor,

  764. physically poor,

  765. but because

  766. of that

  767. it comes

  768. to represent

  769. not just

  770. those who

  771. are literally

  772. physically

  773. poor but

  774. those who

  775. are poor

  776. in spirit,

  777. those who

  778. are meek,

  779. those who

  780. are not

  781. haughty,

  782. those who

  783. are humble,

  784. those who

  785. are afflicted.

  786. For example,

  787. it's translated

  788. the same

  789. word that's

  790. translated poor

  791. in other parts

  792. of the Old

  793. Testament is

  794. translated as

  795. meek in

  796. Isaiah 29

  797. 19.

  798. The meek

  799. shall obtain

  800. fresh joy

  801. in the Lord

  802. and the poor

  803. among mankind

  804. shall exalt

  805. in the Holy

  806. One of Israel.

  807. It is

  808. translated

  809. afflicted

  810. in Psalm

  811. 10.

  812. 12.

  813. Arise,

  814. O Lord,

  815. O God,

  816. lift up

  817. your hand,

  818. forget not

  819. the afflicted.

  820. It's calling

  821. all God's

  822. people as

  823. the afflicted

  824. ones.

  825. It's

  826. translated

  827. humble

  828. in Zephaniah

  829. 2.

  830. 3.

  831. Seek

  832. the Lord,

  833. all you

  834. humble

  835. of the

  836. land

  837. who do

  838. his

  839. just

  840. commands.

  841. Psalm

  842. 149.

  843. For the

  844. Lord takes

  845. pleasure

  846. in his

  847. people,

  848. he adorns

  849. the humble

  850. with salvation.

  851. So who

  852. are these

  853. poor people?

  854. Who are

  855. these humble,

  856. afflicted,

  857. meek people?

  858. They are

  859. the people

  860. of God.

  861. The poor

  862. in spirit

  863. are those

  864. who humbly

  865. acknowledge

  866. their need

  867. for God.

  868. They are

  869. needy people,

  870. not in a

  871. general sense,

  872. but specifically

  873. needy for

  874. God.

  875. In the

  876. New Testament,

  877. the poor

  878. gets lumped

  879. in together

  880. with some

  881. people like

  882. this.

  883. the crippled,

  884. the lame,

  885. the blind.

  886. In Luke

  887. 14,

  888. 12-14,

  889. Jesus says

  890. that when

  891. you throw

  892. a party

  893. that you

  894. should invite

  895. the poor,

  896. the crippled,

  897. the lame,

  898. the blind.

  899. Because then

  900. God will

  901. bless us

  902. for inviting

  903. those who

  904. cannot repay

  905. us.

  906. And God

  907. will repay

  908. us.

  909. In his

  910. sermon on

  911. this passage,

  912. John Piper,

  913. a pastor,

  914. mentioned a

  915. story of

  916. when he was

  917. speaking at

  918. a small

  919. conference

  920. before I

  921. was born.

  922. And he,

  923. after his

  924. message,

  925. a student

  926. came up,

  927. a college

  928. student,

  929. and asked

  930. him a

  931. very commonly

  932. asked question.

  933. Isn't

  934. Christianity

  935. a crutch

  936. for people

  937. who cannot

  938. make it

  939. on their

  940. own?

  941. And John

  942. Piper

  943. thought for

  944. a few

  945. seconds,

  946. and then he

  947. said he just

  948. responded simply,

  949. yes.

  950. Full stop.

  951. Yes,

  952. Christianity

  953. is for

  954. the poor,

  955. the crippled,

  956. the lame,

  957. the blind.

  958. But why

  959. is being a

  960. crutch a

  961. bad thing?

  962. If you have

  963. a broken

  964. leg,

  965. isn't it a

  966. blessing to

  967. have a

  968. crutch so

  969. that you

  970. can walk

  971. around?

  972. Why is

  973. calling

  974. Christianity

  975. a crutch

  976. an insult?

  977. To the

  978. people of

  979. this world,

  980. being a

  981. crutch,

  982. having a

  983. crutch is

  984. an insult

  985. because they

  986. don't want

  987. to admit

  988. that they

  989. are cripples.

  990. In

  991. explaining why

  992. he ministered

  993. to tax

  994. collectors

  995. and sinners

  996. in Matthew

  997. 9,

  998. 12,

  999. Jesus said,

  1000. those who

  1001. are well

  1002. have no

  1003. need of a

  1004. physician,

  1005. but those

  1006. who are

  1007. sick.

  1008. That's why

  1009. Jesus came.

  1010. Yes,

  1011. we are

  1012. blind.

  1013. Left to

  1014. our own

  1015. devices,

  1016. we are

  1017. blind,

  1018. but Jesus

  1019. has opened

  1020. up our

  1021. eyes so

  1022. that we

  1023. once were

  1024. blind,

  1025. but now

  1026. we see.

  1027. Yes,

  1028. left to

  1029. our own

  1030. devices,

  1031. we are

  1032. lame and

  1033. crippled,

  1034. but now

  1035. because of

  1036. Jesus,

  1037. we leap

  1038. like deers.

  1039. Yes,

  1040. left to

  1041. our own

  1042. devices,

  1043. we are

  1044. poor,

  1045. we are

  1046. destitute,

  1047. we are

  1048. bankrupt,

  1049. corrupt.

  1050. But isn't

  1051. that why

  1052. he says

  1053. in 2 Corinthians

  1054. 8,

  1055. 9,

  1056. though Jesus

  1057. was rich,

  1058. yet for

  1059. our sake

  1060. he became

  1061. poor,

  1062. so that

  1063. we by

  1064. his poverty

  1065. might become

  1066. rich.

  1067. As a

  1068. proof of

  1069. his messianic

  1070. ministry,

  1071. Jesus says

  1072. this in

  1073. Matthew 11,

  1074. 5,

  1075. the blind

  1076. receive their

  1077. sight,

  1078. the lame

  1079. walk,

  1080. lepers are

  1081. cleansed,

  1082. and the

  1083. deaf hear,

  1084. and the

  1085. dead are

  1086. raised,

  1087. and the

  1088. poor have

  1089. good news,

  1090. preached to

  1091. them.

  1092. Yes,

  1093. Jesus is

  1094. my crutch,

  1095. and I'm

  1096. not ashamed

  1097. of it.

  1098. In fact,

  1099. Jesus is

  1100. more than

  1101. my crutch,

  1102. because as

  1103. if I can

  1104. do part

  1105. of the

  1106. walking on

  1107. my own,

  1108. no,

  1109. Jesus is

  1110. my wheelchair,

  1111. no,

  1112. he's more

  1113. than that,

  1114. Jesus is

  1115. my everything.

  1116. God does

  1117. not help

  1118. those who

  1119. help

  1120. themselves,

  1121. that is

  1122. deism,

  1123. that is

  1124. not the

  1125. gospel.

  1126. God

  1127. helps

  1128. those who

  1129. cannot

  1130. help

  1131. themselves,

  1132. those who

  1133. are poor

  1134. in spirit,

  1135. those who

  1136. recognize

  1137. their own

  1138. spiritual

  1139. bankruptcy,

  1140. those who

  1141. recognize

  1142. their own

  1143. moral

  1144. destitution,

  1145. their own

  1146. insurmountable

  1147. debt of

  1148. sin before

  1149. the holy

  1150. God,

  1151. they are

  1152. those

  1153. whom God

  1154. helps.

  1155. It is

  1156. critical that

  1157. we admit

  1158. this.

  1159. Objectively

  1160. speaking,

  1161. we are all

  1162. cripples.

  1163. We are

  1164. poor in

  1165. spirit

  1166. because we

  1167. are impoverished

  1168. in our

  1169. spirit,

  1170. but not

  1171. everyone

  1172. admits

  1173. this.

  1174. So this

  1175. must become

  1176. a subjective

  1177. reality to

  1178. us.

  1179. And God

  1180. tells us

  1181. that is

  1182. exactly what

  1183. he is

  1184. looking for

  1185. and the

  1186. people that

  1187. he is

  1188. searching

  1189. for.

  1190. Isaiah

    Isaiah 66:2

  1191. 66,

  1192. verse 2

  1193. says this,

  1194. says the

  1195. Lord.

  1196. He who

  1197. is humble

  1198. and

  1199. contrite

  1200. in spirit

  1201. and trembles

  1202. at my

  1203. word.

  1204. That's what it

  1205. means to be

  1206. poor in spirit,

  1207. to be humble

  1208. and contrite

  1209. in spirit,

  1210. and to

  1211. tremble at

  1212. God's word.

  1213. And the

  1214. Bible gives us

  1215. some vivid

  1216. pictures of

  1217. what this

  1218. looks like

  1219. in flesh.

  1220. in Luke

    Luke 5:8

  1221. chapter 5,

  1222. verse 8,

  1223. when Peter

  1224. realizes who

  1225. Jesus really

  1226. is,

  1227. the usually

  1228. boastful

  1229. Peter,

  1230. the usually

  1231. kind of

  1232. put your

  1233. hand,

  1234. put your

  1235. foot in

  1236. your mouth

  1237. Peter,

  1238. the usually

  1239. the Peter

  1240. who has all

  1241. the braggadocio

  1242. you could

  1243. want,

  1244. when he

  1245. realizes who

  1246. Jesus really

  1247. is,

  1248. he falls

  1249. down at

  1250. Jesus'

  1251. knees and

  1252. he says,

  1253. depart from

  1254. me.

  1255. depart from

  1256. me.

  1257. For I'm a

  1258. sinful man,

  1259. oh Lord.

  1260. In the

  1261. parable of

  1262. the Pharisee

  1263. and the tax

  1264. collector in

  1265. Luke 18,

  1266. while the

  1267. Pharisee is

  1268. looking up to

  1269. heaven and

  1270. boasting of

  1271. his self-righteousness

  1272. and raising his

  1273. arms to heaven,

  1274. and God,

  1275. thank you that I'm

  1276. not like this tax

  1277. collector,

  1278. I do everything I

  1279. need to do,

  1280. I do all the

  1281. righteous deeds,

  1282. and then the

  1283. tax collector

  1284. says he's far

  1285. away,

  1286. he can't even

  1287. get himself to

  1288. draw near the

  1289. temple because

  1290. that's how

  1291. unworthy he

  1292. feels,

  1293. he's far off

  1294. and while he's

  1295. far off,

  1296. he does not

  1297. dare to look up

  1298. to heaven,

  1299. he's looking

  1300. down and he

  1301. beats his

  1302. chest and

  1303. says,

  1304. have mercy on

  1305. me,

  1306. a sinner.

  1307. God,

  1308. he's not

  1309. there.

  1310. And Jesus,

  1311. in his

  1312. kindness,

  1313. says it's

  1314. that tax

  1315. collector that

  1316. goes home

  1317. justified by

  1318. God and not

  1319. that self-righteous

  1320. Pharisee.

  1321. For everyone who

  1322. exalts himself will

  1323. be humbled,

  1324. but the one who

  1325. humbles himself

  1326. will be exalted.

  1327. Job,

  1328. when he hears the

  1329. voice of God,

  1330. this man who

  1331. was a righteous

  1332. man,

  1333. and because of

  1334. the trials that

  1335. he went through

  1336. was accusing God

  1337. and questioning

  1338. God,

  1339. even though he

  1340. still held on to

  1341. his faith and

  1342. integrity,

  1343. when he hears the

  1344. voice of God out

  1345. of the whirlwind,

  1346. he says in Job

  1347. 42,

  1348. 5-6,

  1349. I had heard of

  1350. you by the

  1351. hearing of the

  1352. ear,

  1353. but now my

  1354. eyes see you.

  1355. Therefore,

  1356. I despise

  1357. myself and

  1358. repent in dust

  1359. and ashes.

  1360. Just one more

  1361. example,

  1362. Isaiah 6,

    Isaiah 6:5

  1363. verse 5.

  1364. After seeing a

  1365. vision of the

  1366. Lord,

  1367. a vision of the

  1368. glory and the

  1369. majesty of our

  1370. Lord God,

  1371. prophet Isaiah

  1372. laments,

  1373. woe is me,

  1374. cursed is me,

  1375. woe is me,

  1376. for I am lost,

  1377. for I am a man

  1378. of unclean lips,

1379. and I dwell in the

  1380. midst of a people

  1381. of unclean lips,

  1382. for my eyes have

  1383. seen the king,

  1384. the Lord of hosts.

  1385. If we have never

  1386. felt as Christians,

  1387. in light of the

  1388. face of the glory

  1389. of God,

  1390. to just crumble to

  1391. the floor,

  1392. and confess,

  1393. woe is me,

  1394. depart from me,

  1395. I am a sinner,

  1396. then we have not

  1397. yet fully appreciated

  1398. the glory and the

  1399. holiness of God.

  1400. God.

  1401. Do you know,

  1402. brothers and sisters,

  1403. that sinful men

  1404. are just worms?

  1405. Does that sound

  1406. too extreme to you?

  1407. Because that's not

  1408. my vocabulary,

  1409. that's God's

  1410. vocabulary.

  1411. Isaiah 41,

    Isaiah 41:4

  1412. verse 4,

  1413. what God says

  1414. to his people,

  1415. fear not,

  1416. you warm,

  1417. Jacob,

  1418. you men

  1419. of Israel.

  1420. I am the one

  1421. who helps you,

  1422. declares the Lord.

  1423. Your redeemer

  1424. is the holy one

  1425. of Israel.

  1426. What is God

  1427. saying to us?

  1428. You are but a

  1429. worm,

  1430. but don't lose

  1431. heart because

  1432. I am your

  1433. redeemer.

  1434. Yes,

  1435. we are creating

  1436. the image of God,

  1437. that is true.

  1438. But morally,

  1439. spiritually,

  1440. because of our

  1441. fallen nature,

  1442. because of our sin,

  1443. we are but worms

  1444. and it is wondrous,

  1445. breathtaking grace

  1446. and mercy of God

  1447. that God takes

  1448. mere worms

  1449. and declares

  1450. them to be

  1451. sons and daughters

  1452. of God,

  1453. heirs of the

  1454. kingdom of heaven.

  1455. the presidential

  1456. inauguration

  1457. is tomorrow.

  1458. Some people think

  1459. that President Trump

  1460. is unfit

  1461. for his high office.

  1462. Some other people

  1463. think that President

  1464. Biden was unfit

  1465. for their high office.

  1466. I'm not too

  1467. concerned about

  1468. either of those.

  1469. What's more

  1470. shocking to me

  1471. and what's more

  1472. amazing and

  1473. unbelievable to me

  1474. than both of

  1475. those things

  1476. is that you

  1477. and I

  1478. are counted

  1479. heirs,

  1480. princes

  1481. and princesses

  1482. of the kingdom

  1483. of heaven.

  1484. How can it be?

  1485. For that's what

  1486. God gives us.

  1487. Look at verse 3.

  1488. Blessed are the

  1489. poor in spirit

  1490. for theirs

  1491. is

  1492. the kingdom

  1493. of heaven.

  1494. The Beatitudes

  1495. begins and ends

  1496. with this assurance.

  1497. Verse 3

  1498. and verse 10.

  1499. By bookending

  1500. the Beatitudes

  1501. with this blessing

  1502. and this promise,

  1503. Jesus teaches us

  1504. that the kingdom

  1505. of heaven

  1506. belongs to such

  1507. as these

  1508. as described

  1509. in the Beatitudes.

  1510. And note well

  1511. that this blessing

  1512. is in the present

  1513. tense.

  1514. Theirs is,

  1515. not theirs shall be,

  1516. theirs is the

  1517. kingdom of heaven.

  1518. This is a repetition

  1519. of what Jesus

  1520. started preaching

  1521. earlier in Matthew

  1522. 4, 17.

  1523. Repent for the

  1524. kingdom of heaven

  1525. is at hand.

  1526. The kingdom of heaven

  1527. does not lie

  1528. in the distant future,

  1529. Jesus was saying.

  1530. It is now.

  1531. The reign of God,

  1532. the God of heaven

  1533. here on earth

  1534. is breaking

  1535. in now.

  1536. If we are poor

  1537. in spirit,

  1538. then we are blessed

  1539. because already

  1540. we are in possession

  1541. of the kingdom

  1542. of heaven.

  1543. Not fully,

  1544. as we'll see later,

1545. but in a real way.

  1546. So my poor

  1547. brothers and sisters

  1548. in Christ,

  1549. hear this assurance

  1550. of our Lord Jesus.

  1551. Are you aware

  1552. this morning

  1553. of your own

  1554. spiritual poverty?

  1555. Are you aware

  1556. now of your

  1557. moral bankruptcy?

  1558. Are you aware

  1559. of the insurmountable

  1560. debt of sin

  1561. that you could never

1562. hope to repay to God?

  1563. Take heart

  1564. because you have

  1565. pledged allegiance

  1566. to Christ the King.

  1567. Yours is

  1568. the kingdom

  1569. of heaven.

  1570. Beatitude number two

  1571. flows naturally

  1572. from Beatitude number one.

1573. It says in verse four,

  1574. blessed are those

  1575. who mourn

  1576. for they shall be

  1577. comforted.

  1578. Those who are

  1579. aware

  1580. of their

  1581. spiritual bankruptcy

  1582. and poverty

  1583. cannot help

  1584. but mourn.

  1585. There are two

  1586. specific

  1587. and one

  1588. general sense

  1589. in which Christians

  1590. ought to mourn

  1591. according to the

  1592. New Testament.

  1593. First,

  1594. the word is used

  1595. to refer to

  1596. mourning our own

  1597. sins.

  1598. James 4,

  1599. 8-10

  1600. says this,

  1601. cleanse your hands

  1602. you sinners

  1603. and purify your

  1604. hearts you double-minded.

  1605. Be wretched

  1606. and mourn

  1607. and weep.

  1608. Let your laughter

  1609. be turned to mourning

  1610. and your joy

  1611. to gloom.

  1612. Humble yourselves

  1613. before the Lord

  1614. and he will

  1615. exalt you.

  1616. Mourning our own

  1617. sins,

  1618. humbling ourselves

  1619. before the Lord.

  1620. Secondly,

  1621. we not only mourn

  1622. our own sins,

  1623. we also mourn

  1624. the sins of others,

  1625. especially that

  1626. of our brothers

  1627. and sisters

  1628. in Christ.

  1629. In 2 Corinthians 12,

  1630. 21,

  1631. Paul writes,

1632. I may have to mourn

  1633. over many of those

  1634. who sinned earlier

  1635. and have not repented

  1636. of the impurity,

  1637. sexual immorality,

  1638. and sensuality

  1639. that they have practiced.

  1640. We see how sin

  1641. wreaks havoc

  1642. on the lives

  1643. of our brothers

  1644. and sisters in Christ

  1645. and so we mourn.

  1646. we mourn

  1647. and cry out

  1648. to God in prayer.

  1649. I think we can

  1650. readily agree

  1651. that mourning

  1652. doesn't really

  1653. characterize

  1654. many churches

1655. in our day and age.

  1656. There is little

  1657. solemnity,

  1658. let alone mourning,

  1659. in so many

  1660. church services.

  1661. Everything is instead

  1662. bright and peppy.

  1663. 20th century

  1664. Welsh pastor

  1665. D. Martin Lloyd-Jones

  1666. also observed

  1667. the same phenomenon

  1668. in his day

  1669. and he attributed

  1670. this partly

  1671. to this,

  1672. the idea

  1673. which has gained

  1674. currency

  1675. that if we as

  1676. Christians are to

  1677. attract those

  1678. who are not Christians,

  1679. we must deliberately

  1680. affect an appearance

  1681. of brightness

  1682. and joviality.

  1683. Thus many try

  1684. to assume

  1685. a kind of joy

  1686. and happiness

  1687. which is not

  1688. something that

  1689. rises from

  1690. within

  1691. but is something

  1692. which is put on.

  1693. Now probably

  1694. that is the main

  1695. explanation

  1696. of the absence

  1697. of this characteristic

  1698. of mourning

  1699. in the life

  1700. of the church today.

  1701. It is this

  1702. superficiality,

  1703. this glibness

  1704. or joviality,

  1705. thanks John,

  1706. it is this endeavor

  1707. to appear to be

  1708. something

  1709. and to cut

  1710. a certain figure

  1711. instead of a life

  1712. arising from within

  1713. which controls

  1714. and determines

  1715. the whole of our

  1716. appearance and behavior.

  1717. mourning.

  1718. By the way,

  1719. I highly recommend

  1720. this book

  1721. if you're going

  1722. to follow through

1723. this Sermon on the Mount

  1724. studies in the Sermon

  1725. on the Mount

1726. by D. Martin Lowe Jones.

  1727. The shallow

  1728. understanding

  1729. of sin

  1730. combined

  1731. with a shallow

  1732. notion of joy

  1733. produce people

  1734. who do not mourn.

  1735. You might be thinking

  1736. to yourself,

  1737. well, mourning

  1738. doesn't seem

  1739. all that blessed

  1740. or happy to me.

  1741. I'd rather forget

  1742. my guilt

  1743. than enjoy my life,

  1744. thank you very much.

  1745. It is true

  1746. that sin brings

  1747. a certain kind

  1748. of pleasure.

  1749. Hebrews 11.25

  1750. speaks of the

  1751. fleeting pleasures

  1752. of sin,

  1753. but that is exactly

  1754. the problem.

  1755. sin never leads

  1756. to lasting joy.

  1757. Its pleasures

  1758. are fleeting.

  1759. It's like

  1760. ingesting

  1761. fentanyl,

  1762. which

  1763. gives you

  1764. a brief sense

  1765. of euphoria,

  1766. but then leads

  1767. to destruction

  1768. and death.

  1769. It is mourning

  1770. and our confessing

  1771. our sins

  1772. that we find

  1773. true happiness.

  1774. as 19th century

  1775. English pastor

  1776. Charles Spurgeon

  1777. once preached,

  1778. quote,

  1779. it does not

  1780. spoil your happiness

  1781. to confess your sin.

  1782. The unhappiness

  1783. is in not

  1784. making the confession.

  1785. Any true Christian

  1786. can attest

  1787. to the truth

  1788. of that statement.

  1789. So months ago,

  1790. didn't we learn this

  1791. from Ecclesiastes

    Ecclesiastes 7:2–4

  1792. chapter 7

  1793. verses 2 to 4?

  1794. It is better

1795. to go to the house

  1796. of mourning

  1797. than to go

  1798. to the house

  1799. of feasting,

1800. for this is the end

  1801. of all mankind,

  1802. and the living

1803. will lay it to heart.

  1804. Sorrow

  1805. is better

  1806. than laughter,

  1807. for by sadness

  1808. of face

  1809. the heart

  1810. is made glad.

  1811. The heart

  1812. of the wise

  1813. is in the house

  1814. of mourning,

  1815. but the heart

  1816. of fools

  1817. is in the house

  1818. of mirth.

  1819. When we come

  1820. face to face

  1821. with our own

  1822. sinfulness

  1823. and this world's

  1824. profound

  1825. brokenness,

  1826. there are only

  1827. two ways

  1828. we can try

  1829. to fight off

  1830. despair.

  1831. The first way,

  1832. as I mentioned

  1833. in the Ecclesiastes series,

  1834. is to party

  1835. like there's no tomorrow.

  1836. Drink the night away

1837. and dance the night away.

  1838. Divert yourself

  1839. with endless comedy shows.

  1840. Forget all your troubles,

  1841. but that route

  1842. doesn't ultimately work.

  1843. The true path

  1844. to the peak

  1845. of joy

  1846. always goes

  1847. through the valley

  1848. of mourning.

  1849. If we mourn,

  1850. we cultivate

  1851. humility

  1852. and submission

  1853. before God,

  1854. which then

  1855. produces

  1856. profound

  1857. and lasting

  1858. gratitude

  1859. and joy.

  1860. That is,

  1861. brothers and sisters,

  1862. the secret

  1863. to Christian joy.

  1864. That is the secret

  1865. to Christian joy.

  1866. Only those

  1867. who are poor

  1868. in spirit

  1869. can be filled

  1870. with the spirit.

  1871. only those

  1872. who repent

  1873. can be forgiven.

  1874. Only those

  1875. who have a real

  1876. sense of sin

  1877. can have a true

  1878. sense of joy,

  1879. of salvation.

  1880. Only those

  1881. who have died

  1882. to self

  1883. can have resurrection

  1884. life in Jesus Christ.

  1885. Humility

  1886. comes before

  1887. exaltation.

  1888. That's how it

  1889. always works

  1890. in God's economy.

  1891. So we mourn

  1892. our own sins

  1893. and we mourn

  1894. the sins of others.

  1895. There's still yet

  1896. one more thing

  1897. that we mourn

  1898. in general.

  1899. Later in Matthew 9, 15,

  1900. some people will ask

  1901. Jesus,

  1902. why don't your

  1903. disciples fast

  1904. like these other

  1905. devout Jews?

  1906. And this is

  1907. Jesus' answer.

  1908. Can the wedding

  1909. guests mourn

  1910. as long as

  1911. the bridegroom

  1912. is with them?

  1913. The days will come

  1914. when the bridegroom

  1915. is taken away

  1916. from them

1917. and then they will fast.

  1918. What Jesus is saying

  1919. is this,

  1920. as long as

  1921. the bridegroom

  1922. of the church,

  1923. Jesus,

  1924. is with us

  1925. in the flesh,

  1926. it would be

  1927. inappropriate

  1928. for his followers

  1929. to mourn.

  1930. You don't go

  1931. to a wedding

  1932. to mourn.

  1933. But when Jesus

  1934. is taken away,

  1935. after his death

  1936. and resurrection

  1937. and ascension

  1938. and he's no longer

  1939. physically with them

  1940. anymore,

  1941. Jesus assures them,

  1942. yeah,

  1943. then they will fast.

  1944. Then they will mourn.

  1945. We live in this

  1946. intervening age

  1947. between Christ's

  1948. first coming

  1949. and then his

  1950. second coming

  1951. and that intervening

  1952. age is characterized

  1953. by mourning.

  1954. Because even though

  1955. Christ has already

  1956. inaugurated the

  1957. kingdom of heaven,

  1958. he has not yet

  1959. consummated the

  1960. kingdom of heaven.

  1961. We are already

  1962. in possession

1963. of the kingdom of heaven,

1964. but we are not yet

  1965. in full possession

1966. of the kingdom of heaven.

  1967. Apart from the first

  1968. and the last

  1969. beatitudes,

  1970. all the promises

1971. are in the future tense.

  1972. Look at verse 4.

  1973. Blessed are those

  1974. who mourn,

  1975. for they shall

  1976. be comforted,

  1977. for they shall

  1978. inherit the earth,

  1979. for they shall

  1980. be satisfied,

  1981. for they shall

  1982. receive mercy,

  1983. for they shall

  1984. see God,

  1985. for they shall

  1986. be called

  1987. sons of God.

  1988. We do all

  1989. already have this

  1990. in some measure.

  1991. We know that

  1992. because even though

  1993. verse 9 says,

  1994. blessed are the

  1995. peacemakers,

  1996. for they shall

  1997. be called

  1998. sons of God.

  1999. we are already

  2000. called sons of God

  2001. because throughout

2002. the Sermon on the Mount,

  2003. Jesus will refer

  2004. to God as

  2005. God your Father

  2006. who is in heaven,

  2007. which means we are

2008. his sons and his children.

  2009. Paul teaches this

  2010. very clearly,

  2011. this tension

  2012. in Romans 8.

  2013. Even though we have

  2014. already received

  2015. the spirit of adoption

2016. by whom we cry out

  2017. Abba, Father,

  2018. it says,

  2019. that's Romans 8.15,

2020. but then it also says

  2021. we still groan

  2022. inwardly as we wait

  2023. eagerly for adoption

  2024. as sons,

  2025. the redemption

  2026. of our bodies.

  2027. Until the final

  2028. redemption

  2029. and resurrection

  2030. of our bodies,

  2031. we cannot fully realize

  2032. our spiritual sonship

  2033. via our union

  2034. with Christ,

  2035. the Son of God.

  2036. So even though

  2037. we are already

  2038. sons of God,

  2039. we are not yet

  2040. fully sons of God.

  2041. Both of those things

  2042. are true.

  2043. Same goes down

  2044. the list

  2045. of all of the

  2046. Beatitudes.

  2047. We are already

  2048. comforted

  2049. in significant

  2050. measure,

  2051. but ultimate

  2052. comfort lies

  2053. in the future.

  2054. We already

  2055. inherit the earth

  2056. in some measure,

  2057. but then we shall

  2058. fully inherit

  2059. the earth.

  2060. We are already

  2061. satisfied in Christ,

  2062. but then we shall

  2063. fully be satisfied.

  2064. In this intervening

  2065. age,

  2066. we groan along

  2067. with the rest

  2068. of creation

  2069. because we have

  2070. been subjected

  2071. to futility.

  2072. And we can see

  2073. how sin wreaks

  2074. havoc upon our world

  2075. and upon our bodies.

  2076. We look around us

2077. and we read the news

2078. and we see the heartbreak

  2079. news after news

  2080. of wars

  2081. and of fires

  2082. and destroyed homes

  2083. and diseases

  2084. and deaths.

  2085. So we mourn.

  2086. In this sinful world,

2087. we are poor in spirit

  2088. while the haughty

  2089. gloat over us.

  2090. In this sinful world,

  2091. we mourn

2092. while sinners laugh at us.

  2093. In this world,

  2094. we are meek

  2095. while sinners

  2096. step all over us.

  2097. In this world,

  2098. we are persecuted

  2099. for righteousness' sake.

  2100. But Jesus assures us,

  2101. do not lose heart

  2102. for yours is

  2103. the kingdom of heaven.

  2104. You already have

  2105. the first fruits,

  2106. the down payment

  2107. of the Holy Spirit

2108. and the rest of it

  2109. is definitely coming.

  2110. Your full inheritance

2111. as heirs of the kingdom

  2112. of heaven.

  2113. You will be comforted

  2114. on that day

  2115. and there will be

  2116. no more tears.

  2117. And God himself

  2118. will wipe the tears

  2119. away from your face.

  2120. But why

  2121. do we deserve

  2122. such a wonderful blessing?

  2123. we who are just

  2124. poor in spirit,

  2125. impoverished,

  2126. we who mourn

  2127. our brokenness

  2128. and sin,

  2129. who are we

  2130. to deserve

  2131. all these blessings

  2132. and happinesses?

  2133. The happiness

2134. that God promises us here

2135. comes at a high cost,

  2136. a heavy cost.

  2137. Jesus,

  2138. who is without sin,

  2139. Jesus,

  2140. who is the perfect

  2141. son of God,

  2142. who knew

  2143. eternal happiness,

  2144. he should have

  2145. never known sorrow.

  2146. He should have

  2147. never known

  2148. any grief.

  2149. He should not

  2150. have been poor

  2151. in spirit.

  2152. He should not

  2153. have had to mourn.

  2154. And yet,

  2155. Isaiah 53,

    Isaiah 53:3

  2156. verse 3 prophesied,

  2157. he was despised

  2158. and rejected

  2159. by men,

  2160. a man of sorrows

  2161. and acquainted

  2162. with grief.

  2163. grief.

  2164. Why did the eternal

  2165. son of God,

  2166. who according

  2167. to Proverbs 8,

  2168. 30, 31,

  2169. was daily

  2170. in eternity past,

  2171. daily the delight

  2172. of his father,

2173. who was in eternity past,

  2174. rejoicing before him

  2175. always,

  2176. before the father,

  2177. rejoicing always,

  2178. why did he

  2179. come down to earth

  2180. to become a man

  2181. of sorrows,

  2182. acquainted with grief,

  2183. because he came

  2184. to bear our sorrows,

  2185. because he came

  2186. to bear our griefs,

  2187. because he came

2188. to die on the cross

  2189. so that we who

  2190. should know

  2191. only sorrow

  2192. and only grief

  2193. can be happy,

  2194. can be happy.

  2195. And know true happiness,

  2196. true blessedness,

  2197. true joy.

  2198. It's because Jesus

  2199. was laid low

  2200. that we are now

  2201. lifted up.

  2202. It's because he was

  2203. the man of sorrows

  2204. that we are now

  2205. a happy people.

  2206. We sang these lines

  2207. from the song earlier,

  2208. Good and Gracious King,

  2209. and it perfectly captures

  2210. these two Beatitudes.

  2211. I approach the throne

  2212. of glory.

  2213. Nothing in my hands

  2214. I bring,

  2215. but the promise

  2216. of acceptance

  2217. from a good

  2218. and gracious king.

  2219. So let's approach

  2220. God with empty hands

  2221. and rejoice

  2222. before his face.

  2223. Let's pray together.

  2224. Father,

  2225. we want to be

  2226. a truly joyful

  2227. and happy people.

  2228. We don't want anything

  2229. to do with this

  2230. forced,

  2231. affected happiness,

  2232. masks,

  2233. and pretensions

  2234. of happiness.

  2235. Lord,

2236. we want the real thing.

  2237. We want real happiness

  2238. and real joy.

2239. And so for that end,

  2240. to that end,

  2241. Lord God,

2242. won't you please grant us

  2243. true poverty of spirit,

2244. the true spirit of mourning.

2245. so that we might be,

  2246. though ever afflicted,

  2247. yet always rejoicing.

2248. In the name of your precious son,

  2249. Jesus Christ,

  2250. we pray.

  2251. Amen.
