  1. Please open up your Bibles to Matthew chapter 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  2. We have been in the Beatitudes, which has been an amazing chapter, amazing verses of Scripture.

  3. Matthew 5, verses 1 to 12.

    Matthew 5:1–12

  4. I'm going to be focusing just on the fifth Beatitude, verse 7, but I will read the whole thing.

  5. But let me pray before I do.

  6. Father, we are all sinners in need of mercy.

  7. And you have given us so much mercy.

  8. And so we ask God that right now, you would address us from your word.

  9. And help us to remember and relish the great mercy that you have shown us in Jesus Christ.

  10. And even as we rehearse those truths, want you transform us.

  11. Renew our own mercy, the mercy that we show to those around us.

  12. Meet with us.

  13. In Jesus' name we pray.

  14. Amen.

  15. If you're able, please stand for the reading of God's word from Matthew 5.

  16. I'll read from verse 1 to verse 12.

  17. 전전

  18. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

  19. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

  20. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

  21. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

  22. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

  23. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  24. Blessed are you when others revile you, persecute you, and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

  25. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven.

  26. For so they persecute the prophets who are before you.

  27. This is God's holy and authoritative word. You may be seated.

  28. We have come to the pivot point of the Beatitudes.

  29. I've mentioned a couple times before that the first four Beatitudes all describe a form of emptiness.

  30. Lacking something.

  31. Being poor in spirit.

  32. Being needy.

  33. Being meek.

  34. Being hungry and thirsty for righteousness.

  35. Mourning something you lack.

  36. But we go from needing mercy, people who need mercy in the first four Beatitudes,

  37. now to being merciful.

  38. Being full of mercy toward others.

  39. And the rest of the Beatitudes will be describing Christian fullness.

  40. What we are like as God's mercy overflows from our own lives.

  41. And so the main point of this message that I want to share with you this evening is that

  42. those who have received God's mercy are merciful toward others.

  43. And that they will receive mercy in turn.

  44. So first we'll talk about what mercy is.

  45. Secondly, how to become full of mercy.

  46. And third, we'll talk about who receives mercy.

  47. In terms of details, we don't find much in verse 7.

  48. It just says,

  49. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

  50. But mercy, if you trace this theme throughout the scriptures, is manifold.

  51. It's variegated.

  52. It's very rich with layers of meaning.

  53. But first, let's look at the most relevant context in the Gospel of Matthew itself.

  54. In Matthew 9, 27, in Matthew 20, verse 30, we see the blind men crying out to Jesus for help,

    Matthew 20:30

  55. saying,

  56. Have mercy on me.

  57. We hear a similar cry from a Canaanite woman whose daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.

  58. In Matthew 15, 22,

  59. Have mercy on me.

  60. And then a man whose son is suffering from terrible seizures in Matthew 17, 15, again,

  61. Have mercy on me.

  62. We see that pattern in the other Gospels as well.

  63. A leper cries out,

  64. Have mercy on me.

  65. So from this pattern of people who cry out for mercy,

  66. we can see that mercy is associated with those who are in need.

  67. It belongs to those who need help.

  68. Those who are not entitled to something or have earned something,

  69. but someone who needs mercy nonetheless.

  70. That's why the Greek word for alms or charitable giving used in the New Testament

  71. is derived from the same word for mercy.

  72. So in Matthew 6, 2-4,

  73. when Jesus speaks of giving to the needy,

  74. if you translate them more literally,

  75. it's doing acts of mercy.

  76. So mercy is an expression.

  77. Charitable giving is an act of mercy, expression of mercy.

  78. So it's the needy who cry out for mercy.

  79. Jesus confirms this in Matthew 9, 10-13.

  80. The Pharisees criticize Jesus for eating with tax collectors and sinners.

  81. And Jesus says,

  82. So once again, who are the objects of mercy?

  83. It's the sick, not the healthy.

  84. It's the sinners, not the righteous.

  85. The needy need mercy.

  86. To be merciful then is to have compassion for the needy in both your disposition toward them

  87. and your deed toward them.

  88. In both your attitude and your actions,

  89. to have compassion for the needy.

  90. In situations where there is physical, material need,

  91. the merciful are going to have the impulse to meet that need,

  92. tangible ways to help them.

  93. In spiritual situations, when there's spiritual need,

  94. where there are sinners,

  95. the impulse of the merciful will be to forgive and to be gracious.

  96. When Jesus says,

  97. I desire mercy, not sacrifice,

  98. he is contrasting,

  99. he's quoting from Hosea 6, verse 6,

    Hosea 6:6

  100. and he is contrasting genuine inward piety

  101. from superficial outward piety,

  102. fleeting outward piety.

  103. It's the same distinction that Samuel makes in 1 Samuel 15, 22.

  104. You may know the story.

  105. When Saul, the king of Israel,

  106. was instructed by God to destroy the Amalekites

  107. because of their wickedness

  108. and to not take any spoils from the war.

  109. However, Saul decides that that's too much of a waste.

  110. Well, look at all this good livestock,

  111. look at all this treasure,

  112. look at all this food,

  113. and he decides to keep them for himself

  114. and for the people.

  115. And when Samuel confronts him about his disobedience,

  116. Saul deviously says,

  117. Oh, no, no, no, I kept all this

  118. so that we could bring it as a sacrifice to God.

  119. And then Samuel says,

  120. Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices

  121. as in obeying the voice of the Lord?

  122. Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice

  123. and to listen than the fad of rams.

  124. How many times have we paid lip service to God

  125. and made outward sacrifices,

  126. show of piety,

  127. while inwardly our hearts are far from him?

  128. Maybe even using these shows of piety

  129. as misdirection to distract people's attention

  130. from our disobedience.

  131. Maybe even seeking to distract God himself.

  132. That's what the Pharisees did.

  133. On the outside, they were righteous

  134. because they were great at keeping up

  135. an appearance of conformity,

  136. keeping the formalities of rituals,

  137. but they did not truly know God

  138. or obey God from the heart.

  139. And how do we know that they didn't obey God from the heart?

  140. Because they had no mercy towards sinners.

  141. In Matthew 23, 23, 24,

  142. Jesus denounces the Pharisees saying,

  143. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,

  144. hypocrites, for you tithe mint and dill and cumin

  145. and have neglected the weightier matters of the law,

  146. justice and mercy and faithfulness.

  147. These you ought to have done

  148. without neglecting the others,

  149. you blind guides straining out a gnat

  150. and swallowing a camel.

  151. These Pharisees painstakingly kept the minutiae of the law.

  152. They would, we talk about tithing

  153. and sometimes people ask me,

  154. do you tithe from the net or from the gross?

  155. Like, what do you, what do you do?

  156. Like, it's kind of like those questions a little bit,

  157. but they were tithing 10% of the smallest spices

  158. that they used to God.

  159. They carefully strained out a gnat

  160. from their drinks and foods.

  161. The gnat is the smallest insect that caused impurity

  162. in Jewish ritual.

  163. However, after straining out a gnat,

  164. they turned around and they ate camels,

  165. which is the largest unclean animal ceremonially

  166. in the Old Testament.

  167. They weren't literally eating camels.

  168. Jesus is using a figure of speech

  169. to say that they care about the minutiae,

  170. painstakingly care about the minutiae,

  171. and then they neglect the weightier matters of the law.

  172. So what is Jesus saying?

  173. He's speaking of priorities, being merciful,

  174. showing mercy is the bigger stuff that God cares about.

  175. Mercy is one of the weightier matters of the law.

  176. You're obeying the small commands,

  177. well, good, good for you.

  178. Keep doing that,

  179. but don't neglect the bigger commands.

  180. At the heart of Christian obedience

  181. is a heart of mercy.

  182. A classic example of mercy

  183. is the parable of the Good Samaritan.

  184. In Luke 10, 25 to 37,

  185. Jesus tells this story of a man

  186. who is mugged by a band of robbers,

  187. and he is left half dead.

  188. But what good luck for him,

  189. because a priest happens to be walking by,

  190. a minister of the temple of God.

  191. And he sees the man,

  192. and after seeing the man in need,

  193. he decides that he's going to walk around

  194. on the other side.

  195. But never fear,

  196. because there comes another person

  197. and he's a Levite,

  198. someone who ministers in the temple as well,

  199. assists the priests.

  200. If a priest is equivalent to a modern-day pastor,

  201. the Levite is equivalent to a modern-day deacon

  202. or worship leader.

  203. Surely he'll come and help this person in need,

  204. but again, the Levite sees the person,

  205. and he says that he walks by on the other side.

  206. But then, in comes a Samaritan.

  207. He's an unlikely hero of the story

  208. because the Jews despise Samaritans,

  209. because they view them as religious heretics,

  210. ethnic half-breeds, and political traitors.

  211. And yet, the Samaritan is the one who cares for the man

  212. and goes the extra mile.

  213. He puts him on his donkey,

  214. brings him over to an inn,

  215. attends to his wounds,

  216. and pays for his stay there

  217. until he can fully recover.

  218. And then Jesus asks his hearers,

  219. after telling his parable,

  220. which of these three,

  221. the priest, the Levite, and the Samaritan,

  222. do you think proved to be a neighbor

  223. to the man who fell among the robbers?

  224. And a lawyer responds,

  225. the one who showed him mercy.

  226. And Jesus says to him,

  227. you go and do likewise.

  228. The priest and the Levite in those days

  229. were the ones who were responsible

  230. for offering sacrifices in the temple.

  231. And yet, they were the very ones

  232. who in this parable

  233. failed to keep the weightier matters of the law.

  234. This is serving in that way

  235. as cautionary tales of what Jesus just said

  236. in Matthew 9, 13,

  237. I desire mercy and not sacrifice.

  238. So let's ask ourselves,

  239. in what ways do we honor God with our lips

  240. while our hearts are far from him?

  241. In what ways are we keeping

  242. the less important commands

  243. but neglecting the more important commands

  244. like being merciful?

  245. I hesitate to use this example

  246. because I do want to encourage you all

  247. to show up to worship on time.

  248. However,

  249. if you are more concerned

  250. with showing up to church on time

  251. than with being merciful

  252. to your spouse and kids,

  253. if you are irate

  254. and punishing toward them

  255. when running late to church,

  256. then you are neglecting

  257. the weightier matters of the law.

  258. If you are more concerned

  259. with theological minutiae

  260. than being merciful toward the people

  261. who disagree with you theologically,

  262. if instead of correcting them

  263. with gentleness and mercifulness,

  264. as it says in 2 Timothy 2, 25,

  265. you are haughty and you're demeaning

  266. in your discourse with them,

  267. then you are neglecting

  268. the weightier matters of the law.

  269. If you are so invested

  270. in pursuing justice

  271. or certain social or moral issues

  272. that you run roughshod over people

  273. and you guilt-truth them

  274. and you cancel them

  275. and you ruin the reputation

  276. of anybody who stands in your way,

  277. then you are neglecting

  278. the weightier matters of the law.

  279. Blessed are the merciful

  280. for they shall receive mercy.

  281. We can flesh out this picture of mercy

  282. by looking at the example

  283. of power excellence,

  284. of God himself.

  285. This is what Jesus told us to do

  286. in Luke 6, 36,

  287. be merciful even as your father

  288. is merciful.

  289. Two different Hebrew words

  290. in the Old Testament

  291. are often translated as merciful

  292. in the Greek translation

  293. of the Old Testament.

  294. And they are sometimes

  295. in alternate translations

  296. rendered gracious

  297. or steadfast love.

  298. Grace and steadfast love.

  299. Again, they're related words

  300. with the word mercy.

  301. The two terms,

  302. the words merciful and gracious

  303. occur a dozen or so times together,

  304. paired together in the Old Testament.

  305. And they invariably describe God.

  306. God is the one

  307. who is gracious and merciful.

  308. We find this meaning

  309. in the Hebrew word

  310. for steadfast love and grace.

  311. Let's look at a few examples

  312. from the Old Testament

  313. where it describes

  314. specific actions of God

  315. that flow from

  316. and stem from

  317. his merciful nature.

  318. It says in Nehemiah 9, 17,

  319. that even though the Israelites

  320. refused to obey God

  321. and they stiffened their necks,

  322. meaning they got stubborn

  323. instead of letting God direct them,

  324. they stiffened their necks

  325. and resisted him.

  326. God, it says,

  327. was ready to forgive,

  328. gracious and merciful,

  329. slow to anger

  330. and abounding in steadfast love

  331. and did not forsake them.

  332. Because God is merciful,

  333. he was ready to forgive.

  334. He did not forsake them.

  335. 2 Chronicles 30, verse 9,

    2 Chronicles 30:9

  336. enjoins Israelites

  337. who have strayed from God

  338. to return to him.

  339. And how does he try

  340. to motivate them

  341. to return to him?

  342. He says,

  343. For the Lord your God

  344. is gracious and merciful

  345. and will not turn away

  346. his face from you.

  347. Because God is merciful,

  348. he does not turn his face

  349. from us when we return to him,

  350. even after we have sinned

  351. against him

  352. and have strayed from him.

  353. Jeremiah 3, 12 says,

  354. Return, faithless Israel,

  355. declares the Lord.

  356. I will not look on you

  357. in anger,

  358. for I am merciful,

  359. declares the Lord.

  360. I will not be angry forever.

  361. Because God is merciful,

  362. once again,

  363. he will not look on in anger

  364. at us forever.

  365. He relents in his anger.

  366. In spite of our manifold sins

  367. and our repeated sins,

  368. God, right now,

  369. loves us still

  370. and forgives all of our iniquity,

  371. rebellion, and sin.

  372. And what do you call

  373. a God like that?

  374. We call him merciful.

  375. Isn't this so different

  376. from the picture

  377. that we have of God sometimes?

  378. Maybe you walked

  379. into church today

  380. with guilt, shame, dread,

  381. weighing down upon your soul.

  382. Do you fear

  383. that God will abandon you?

  384. Do you fear

  385. his angry countenance?

  386. Do you fear

  387. that you are now

  388. beyond the pale of his mercy?

  389. You can rest assured

  390. Lord, you are not

  391. because God is full of mercy.

  392. He is ready to forgive.

  393. He will not turn his face

  394. from you

  395. if you return to him.

  396. He will not be angry forever.

  397. This is an amazing truth.

  398. But we also must not

  399. misunderstand

  400. this precious truth

  401. that God is merciful

  402. does not mean

  403. that he is an indulgent

  404. or permissive father.

  405. Our God is also

  406. the consuming fire.

  407. He is the thrice holy God.

  408. Sometimes I think we

  409. as Christians

  410. can have an imbalanced

  411. or skewed view of God.

  412. Sometimes we

  413. overemphasize love

  414. and mercy

  415. to the neglect

  416. of truth and righteousness

  417. or the vice versa.

  418. Much like how a toddler

  419. colors their coloring pages.

  420. You know,

  421. like,

  422. I like blue

  423. so everything is blue

  424. or I like pink

  425. so everything is blue

  426. and it doesn't stay

  427. within the lines either.

  428. And it's only

  429. as they mature

  430. as artists

  431. that they learn

  432. to color in nuances

  433. and shades

  434. and contrast

  435. and use

  436. complementary colors.

  437. Likewise,

  438. as we mature

  439. as Christians

  440. we learn to appreciate

  441. and delight in

  442. and worship

  443. the fullness

  444. of God's glory

  445. and character.

  446. the King James Version

  447. renders Psalm 85

    Psalms 85:10

  448. verse 10 this way.

  449. Mercy and truth

  450. are met together.

  451. Righteousness and peace

  452. have kissed each other.

  453. That's what God is like.

  454. And it looks

  455. then that means

  456. that's what it looks like

  457. for us

  458. to be merciful also.

  459. Taking our cue from God

  460. being merciful

  461. does not mean

  462. that we never seek

  463. or enforce

  464. justice or righteousness.

  465. Once again

  466. 20th century

  467. Welsh pastor

  468. that I've been quoting

  469. in every sermon

  470. in the Beatitudes

  471. so far.

  472. I know some of you guys

  473. have started a book club

  474. to go through

  475. the studies

  476. in the Sermon on the Mount

  477. by D. Martin Lloyd-Jones.

  478. I cannot be more proud

  479. of you guys.

  480. It is

  481. started by a Welshman

  482. nonetheless.

  483. And he writes

  484. in his book

  485. there are so many

  486. people today

  487. who think

  488. that being merciful

  489. means to be easygoing

  490. not to see things

  491. or if we do see them

  492. to pretend

  493. we have not.

  494. That of course

  495. is a particular danger

  496. in an age like this

  497. which does not believe

  498. in law or discipline

  499. and in a sense

  500. does not believe

  501. in justice

  502. or righteousness.

  503. The idea today

  504. is that man

  505. should absolutely

  506. be free-minded

  507. that he has the right

  508. to do just what he likes.

  509. The merciful person

  510. many people think

  511. is one who smiles

  512. at transgression

  513. and law-breaking.

  514. He says

  515. what does it matter?

  516. Let's carry on.

  517. He is a flabby

  518. kind of person

  519. that's that word again

  520. easygoing

  521. easy to get on with

  522. to whom it does not matter

  523. whether laws

  524. are broken or not

  525. who is not concerned

  526. about keeping them.

  527. Only a person

  528. who upholds righteousness

  529. can be truly merciful.

  530. Let me explain.

  531. Showing mercy to sinners

  532. and forgiving sin

  533. is hard work

  534. and sometimes

  535. it's painful work

  536. but being permissive

  537. towards sinners

  538. and condoning

  539. or ignoring sin

  540. is easy

  541. and it's painless.

  542. I read a remarkable

  543. concession

  544. from a New York Times

  545. columnist

  546. named Nicholas Kristof

  547. this weekend.

  548. His article

  549. was entitled

  550. We Thought

  551. We Were Compassionate

  552. But We Were Too Permissive.

  553. He writes

  554. As a good liberal

  555. I used to oppose

  556. arresting people

  557. for using drugs.

  558. They need health care

  559. not handcuffs

  560. I thought.

  561. But then

  562. to my surprise

  563. and dismay

  564. I found myself

  565. praying

  566. that my old pal

  567. Drew Goff

  568. would be arrested.

  569. Drew 40 years old

  570. was homeless

  571. using fentanyl

  572. and also selling it.

  573. His wife

  574. who was with him

  575. was pregnant

  576. and had overdosed

  577. 27 times

  578. including twice

  579. in a single day.

  580. It seemed only

  581. a matter of time

  582. before Drew

  583. killed himself

  584. or one of his customers.

  585. So Drew's mom

  586. and I confided

  587. to each other

  588. our hope

  589. that he would end up

  590. in the relative safety

  591. of prison

  592. and get treatment there.

  593. It's the only way

  594. to save his life

  595. his mom said wearily.

  596. And in the end

  597. Drew himself agreed.

  598. Drew's most recent

  599. tumble into addiction

  600. came in part

  601. because of a permissive

  602. liberal culture

  603. toward drugs

  604. on the west coast.

  605. This was meant

  606. to be compassionate

  607. but it almost

  608. killed him

  609. and has killed

  610. many of my other friends.

  611. You see

  612. being merciful

  613. and compassionate

  614. is not the same thing

  615. as being permissive

  616. and indulgent.

  617. Maybe you're really good

  618. at overlooking

  619. the sins of others

  620. but maybe you're

  621. too good.

  622. Maybe others

  623. sin against God

  624. actually don't

  625. grieve you

  626. at all.

  627. maybe you don't

  628. actually care

  629. about sin.

  630. If that's the case

  631. you are not

  632. merciful.

  633. You're permissive.

  634. You're not

  635. compassionate.

  636. You're not

  637. compassionate

  638. toward sinners.

  639. You are complicit

  640. with sinners.

  641. Psalm 119

  642. 136

  643. says this

  644. My eyes shed

  645. stream of tears

  646. because people

  647. do not keep

  648. your law.

  649. It's only people

  650. who mourn sin

  651. who can truly

  652. be merciful

  653. toward sinners.

  654. How then

  655. do we

  656. simultaneously

  657. pursue justice

  658. and righteousness

  659. but also be merciful?

  660. I don't think

  661. we can come up

  662. from Scripture

  663. a rigid rule

  664. that we can apply

  665. to every situation

  666. every single situation.

  667. I think the answer

  668. is to mingle

  669. justice and mercy

  670. according to

  671. Scripture informed

  672. and Spirit led

  673. discernment

  674. and wisdom.

  675. Let's think of

  676. some specific examples.

  677. Do merciful employers

  678. ever fire

  679. incompetent

  680. and delinquent

  681. employees?

  682. Of course they do.

  683. If they didn't

  684. then they would not

  685. be good managers

  686. and the company

  687. would suffer.

  688. They would not

  689. be faithful

  690. in their work

  691. and they would

  692. not meet their goals

  693. and the company

  694. would cease

  695. to be a public service.

  696. But merciful employers

  697. might give

  698. that employee

  699. another chance.

  700. that employer

  701. might use

  702. what is in

  703. his or her power

  704. to help the employee

  705. to grow

  706. and improve

  707. and perform better.

  708. Do merciful parents

  709. ever discipline

  710. their children

  711. their disobedient children?

  712. If they are obedient

  713. to the Scriptures

  714. yes they will

  715. but they're not going

  716. to be hardened

  717. disciplinarians.

  718. They'll have

  719. a merciful posture.

  720. They're not going

  721. to punish

  722. every offense

  723. nor be harsh

  724. with their children

  725. or provoke them

  726. to anger

  727. as it says

  728. in Ephesians 6.4.

  729. They will be firm

  730. yet gracious.

  731. They will teach

  732. and uphold righteousness

  733. and yet they will

  734. also show mercy

  735. to their children

  736. so that they can

  737. represent God

  738. to them.

  739. God who is described

  740. as the Father

  741. of mercies

  742. and the God

  743. of all comfort

  744. in 2 Corinthians 1.3.

  745. Do merciful pastors

  746. ever excommunicate

  747. unrepentant church members?

  748. Yes, but they will not

  749. excommunicate members

  750. for every little sin

  751. nor will they be hasty

  752. to excommunicate

  753. church members.

  754. If they are merciful

  755. they will patiently

  756. endure evil

  757. they will exhort

  758. and entreat earnestly

  759. !

  760. And if there is still

  761. unrepentance

  762. they will excommunicate

  763. with tears.

  764. Do merciful police officers

  765. and lawyers

  766. and judges

  767. ever prosecute

  768. and sentence people.

  769. Of course they do.

  770. If they didn't

  771. we'd have a lawless society.

  772. But if they are merciful

  773. they won't press

  774. every single case.

  775. Some of you guys

  776. have been pulled over

  777. for speeding.

  778. I know this

  779. because it comes up

  780. in the children's ministry

  781. vetting process.

  782. I will not

  783. make it public

  784. to anybody.

  785. but when you do

  786. sometimes you have

  787. gotten a ticket

  788. from a police officer

  789. but maybe other times

  790. you got pulled over

  791. and the police officer

  792. just gave you a warning

  793. and didn't give you

  794. a ticket

  795. and let you off.

  796. It's happened to me before.

  797. You received mercy.

  798. A judge in court

  799. has to give everyone

  800. equal justice under law

  801. but he must be

  802. impartial

  803. and unbiased

  804. but if he is merciful

  805. he might use

  806. his discretion

  807. sometimes

  808. when he has

  809. the latitude

  810. to lessen the sentence

  811. reduce the fines

  812. or dismiss

  813. a minor charge

  814. particularly when

  815. the defendant

  816. is repentant

  817. or it's a first time

  818. offense

  819. where there are

  820. other extenuating

  821. circumstances.

  822. Sometimes we're going

  823. to give people

  824. what they deserve.

  825. That's justice.

  826. Other times

  827. we're going to

  828. spare people

  829. what they deserve

  830. and that's mercy.

  831. The Bible does not

  832. give us

  833. an exhaustive list

  834. of do's and don'ts

  835. about how to be merciful

  836. in every single circumstance

  837. and I think that's

  838. for the better.

  839. Notice how the

  840. fifth beatitude

  841. is phrased.

  842. Like the rest

  843. of the beatitudes

  844. it speaks

  845. not primarily

  846. of what we do

  847. but of who we are

  848. because if we are

  849. merciful

  850. then we will

  851. show mercy

  852. and we will know

  853. how to respond

  854. in the situations

  855. that come to us

  856. because we have

  857. been transformed

  858. by the gospel

  859. of Jesus Christ

  860. from the inside out.

  861. I've already shown

  862. my hand here

  863. by saying that

  864. but with having

  865. defined what mercy

  866. is let's not talk

  867. about how to become

  868. full of mercy.

  869. Again like the

  870. other beatitudes

  871. this is not something

  872. that we can attain

  873. apart from God

  874. or apart from Christ.

  875. These are all

  876. divinely wrought

  877. and spirit born traits

  878. their spiritual virtues

  879. enabled by God

  880. and here's the key

  881. to becoming merciful.

  882. Ephesians 4.32

  883. says be kind

  884. to one another

  885. tender hearted

  886. forgiving one another

  887. as God in Christ

  888. forgave you.

  889. How do we cultivate

  890. mercifulness

  891. kindness

  892. tender heartedness

  893. forgiveness

  894. by receiving first

  895. God's mercy

  896. in Jesus Christ.

  897. He forgave us.

  898. You see this again

  899. in Colossians 3.12-13

  900. put on then

  901. as God's chosen ones

  902. holy and beloved

  903. compassionate hearts

  904. or merciful hearts

  905. kindness

  906. humility

  907. meekness

  908. and patience

  909. bearing with one another

  910. and if one has a complaint

  911. against another

  912. forgiving each other.

  913. The list

  914. very closely resembles

  915. the beatitudes

  916. right?

  917. Meekness

  918. humility

  919. compassionate hearts

  920. mercy

  921. and the key

  922. to obeying that command

  923. again it says

  924. later in that verse

  925. as the Lord

  926. has forgiven you

  927. so you also

  928. must forgive.

  929. Once again

  930. it's by receiving

  931. and remembering

  932. the mercy of God

  933. that we become

  934. merciful people.

  935. We find this principle

  936. all over the New Testament

  937. in 1 John 4

  938. it commends us

  939. to love our brothers

  940. and sisters in Christ

  941. but how

  942. do we love our brothers

  943. and sisters in Christ?

  944. It tells us

  945. in 1 John 4.19

  946. we love

  947. because God

  948. first loved us

  949. in this

  950. is love

  951. not that we

  952. have loved God

  953. but that he

  954. loved us

  955. and sent his son

  956. to be the propitiation

  957. for our sins.

  958. Beloved

  959. if God so loved us

  960. we also ought to

  961. love one another.

  962. The greatest mercy

  963. that God

  964. has ever shown us

  965. is in the sending

  966. of his only son

  967. Jesus Christ

  968. to die on the cross

  969. for our sins.

  970. We have all

  971. sinned against God.

  972. We have all

  973. had pride

  974. in our hearts.

  975. We have made

  976. ourselves

  977. gods and lords

  978. over our own lives

  979. rather than submitting

  980. to God

  981. and worshipping God.

  982. In political terms

  983. we call that

  984. treason

  985. rebellion.

  986. God could have

  987. condemned us

  988. for our sin

  989. and he could have

  990. damned us

  991. for eternity

  992. in hell

  993. and that would have

  994. been justice.

  995. That's what man

  996. would have done

  997. in his place.

  998. But praise be to God

  999. that he is God

  1000. and not man

  1001. because instead

  1002. when he saw us

  1003. in our sin

  1004. and in our misery

  1005. his heart

  1006. welled up

  1007. with pity

  1008. and he had

  1009. compassion on us.

  1010. God says

  1011. in Hosea 11

  1012. 8-9

  1013. my heart

  1014. recoils

  1015. within me

  1016. my compassion

  1017. grows warm

  1018. and tender

  1019. I will not

  1020. execute my

  1021. burning anger

  1022. I will not

  1023. again destroy

  1024. Ephraim

  1025. for I am God

  1026. and not a man

  1027. the Holy One

  1028. in your midst

  1029. and I will not

  1030. come in wrath.

  1031. It's like man

  1032. to be vindictive

  1033. and vengeful

  1034. it is like God

  1035. to be merciful.

  1036. Instead of coming

  1037. in wrath

  1038. what does it say

  1039. in Luke 1

  1040. 7-8

  1041. describing Jesus'

  1042. coming as the

  1043. sunrise

  1044. the sunrise

  1045. visited us

  1046. from on high

  1047. why?

  1048. Because

  1049. of the tender

  1050. mercy

  1051. of our God

  1052. the tender

  1053. mercy

  1054. of our God

  1055. you have

  1056. all heard

  1057. and know

  1058. and love

  1059. Ephesians 2

  1060. 4-5

  1061. but God

  1062. being rich

  1063. in mercy

  1064. because of

  1065. the great

  1066. love with

  1067. which he

  1068. loved us

  1069. even when

  1070. we were

  1071. dead

  1072. in our

  1073. trespasses

  1074. made us

  1075. alive

  1076. together

  1077. with Christ

  1078. by grace

  1079. you have

  1080. been saved.

  1081. It's

  1082. God's

  1083. tender

  1084. mercy

  1085. his

  1086. wealth

  1087. of mercy

  1088. richness

  1089. in mercy

  1090. and his

  1091. great

  1092. love

  1093. that's

  1094. the reason

  1095. God sent

  1096. Jesus'

  1097. only son

  1098. to die

  1099. on the

  1100. cross

  1101. for us

  1102. to redeem

  1103. us

  1104. from

  1105. death

  1106. and what

  1107. did we

  1108. bring to

  1109. the table?

  1110. We brought

  1111. no worth

  1112. no merit

  1113. it doesn't

  1114. say that

  1115. God made

  1116. us alive

  1117. together

  1118. with Christ

  1119. while we

  1120. were

  1121. sincerely

  1122. pursuing

  1123. him

  1124. and trying

  1125. to please

  1126. him

  1127. no it

  1128. says

  1129. that God

  1130. made us

  1131. alive

  1132. together

  1133. with Christ

  1134. even

  1135. when

  1136. we were

  1137. dead

  1138. in our

  1139. trespass

  1140. that's

  1141. why

  1142. it's

  1143. mercy

  1144. remember

  1145. our

  1146. definition

  1147. to be

  1148. merciful

  1149. is to

  1150. have

  1151. compassion

  1152. for the

  1153. needy

  1154. in

  1155. disposition

  1156. and

  1157. deed

  1158. if we

  1159. in some

  1160. way

  1161. deserve

  1162. to be

  1163. saved

  1164. it would

  1165. not be

  1166. mercy

  1167. it would

  1168. be

  1169. merit

  1170. salvation

  1171. then would

  1172. be a

  1173. reward

  1174. and a

  1175. wage

  1176. not a

  1177. gift

  1178. but it

  1179. turns out

  1180. salvation

  1181. is a

  1182. gift

  1183. it's a

  1184. grace

  1185. and it's

  1186. a mercy

  1187. some years

  1188. ago there

  1189. was a

  1190. famous

  1191. recording

  1192. artist

  1193. who claimed

  1194. to have

  1195. been

  1196. converted

  1197. to

  1198. Christianity

  1199. and I

  1200. along with

  1201. many of

  1202. you were

  1203. very excited

  1204. about it

  1205. it was

  1206. getting a lot

  1207. of media

  1208. attention

  1209. but then

  1210. in one of

  1211. the interviews

  1212. he said

  1213. that because

  1214. he is worth

  1215. three billion

  1216. dollars

  1217. and because

  1218. he's the

  1219. number one

  1220. Google search

  1221. brand in the

  1222. world

  1223. that God

  1224. was showing

  1225. off

  1226. and showing

  1227. out

  1228. by saying

  1229. that oh

  1230. he works

  1231. for me

  1232. he belongs

  1233. to me

  1234. he didn't

  1235. understand

  1236. mercy

  1237. and you

  1238. can see

  1239. now from

  1240. the way

  1241. he has

  1242. turned

  1243. around

  1244. from that

  1245. confession

  1246. God

  1247. saved him

  1248. because he's

  1249. so great

  1250. and he

  1251. wants to

  1252. show off

  1253. his latest

  1254. acquisition

  1255. that is

  1256. so far

  1257. from the

  1258. biblical

  1259. mindset

  1260. contrast that

  1261. with what

  1262. Paul says

  1263. in Philippians

  1264. three

  1265. he says

  1266. that every

  1267. reason he

  1268. has

  1269. for confidence

  1270. in the

  1271. flesh

  1272. things that

  1273. he might

  1274. boast about

  1275. that it's

  1276. all rubbish

  1277. compared to

  1278. the surpassing

  1279. worth of

  1280. knowing Christ

  1281. Jesus my

  1282. Lord

  1283. he says

  1284. same Paul

  1285. says in

  1286. first

  1287. Timothy

  1288. 1 16

  1289. but I

  1290. received

  1291. mercy

  1292. for this

  1293. reason

  1294. not so

  1295. God can

  1296. show off

  1297. about what

  1298. a great

  1299. person

  1300. Paul is

  1301. now he

  1302. belongs

  1303. to me

  1304. I

  1305. received

  1306. mercy

  1307. for this

  1308. reason

  1309. that in

  1310. me

  1311. as the

  1312. foremost

  1313. of

  1314. sinners

  1315. Jesus

  1316. Christ

  1317. might

  1318. display

  1319. his

  1320. perfect

  1321. patience

  1322. as an

  1323. example

  1324. to those

  1325. who were

  1326. to believe

  1327. in him

  1328. for eternal

  1329. life

  1330. the reason

  1331. why he

  1332. received

  1333. mercy

  1334. Paul says

  1335. is so

  1336. that God

  1337. might show

  1338. how patient

  1339. and merciful

  1340. he is

  1341. to save

  1342. a chief

  1343. of sinners

  1344. in other

  1345. words

  1346. God saved

  1347. us

  1348. not because

  1349. we're

  1350. trophies

  1351. but despite

  1352. the fact

  1353. that we're

  1354. trash

  1355. trash

  1356. isn't

  1357. that what

  1358. rubbish

  1359. is

  1360. trash

  1361. refuse

  1362. dung

  1363. that's

  1364. all

  1365. that we

  1366. have

  1367. to offer

  1368. to God

  1369. in our

  1370. flesh

  1371. the church

  1372. is not

  1373. Jesus's

  1374. trophy

  1375. wife

  1376. it's

  1377. the

  1378. whore

  1379. that was

  1380. redeemed

  1381. by the

  1382. mercy

  1383. of God

  1384. God

  1385. saves us

  1386. not because

  1387. we're

  1388. amazing

  1389. but because

  1390. he is

  1391. amazing

  1392. not to

  1393. showcase

  1394. our

  1395. merits

  1396. but to

  1397. showcase

  1398. his

  1399. mercy

  1400. and when

  1401. we remember

  1402. how much

  1403. we have

  1404. been forgiven

  1405. how much

  1406. mercy

  1407. we have

  1408. received

  1409. it makes

  1410. us

  1411. merciful

  1412. and forgiving

  1413. toward others

  1414. there's so much

  1415. mercy

  1416. we've talked

  1417. about and we've

  1418. only talked

  1419. about God

  1420. the Father

  1421. he says

  1422. of Jesus

  1423. in Hebrews

  1424. 2

  1425. 17

  1426. 18

  1427. therefore

  1428. he had

  1429. to be

  1430. made

  1431. like his

  1432. brothers

  1433. in every

  1434. respect

  1435. so that

  1436. he might

  1437. become

  1438. a merciful

  1439. and faithful

  1440. high priest

  1441. in the service

  1442. of God

  1443. to make

  1444. propitiation

  1445. for the sins

  1446. of the people

  1447. for because

  1448. he himself

  1449. has suffered

  1450. when tempted

  1451. he's able

  1452. to help

  1453. those who

  1454. are being

  1455. tempted

  1456. what makes

  1457. Jesus

  1458. a merciful

  1459. high priest

  1460. what makes

  1461. Jesus

  1462. a merciful

  1463. high priest

  1464. who intercedes

  1465. on our behalf

  1466. and advocates

  1467. for us

  1468. that he was

  1469. made like

  1470. us

  1471. in every

  1472. respect

  1473. he took

  1474. on human

  1475. flesh

  1476. he walked

  1477. on the

  1478. earth

  1479. he suffered

  1480. he wept

  1481. he was

  1482. tempted

  1483. and that's

  1484. why he's

  1485. not callous

  1486. or indifferent

  1487. to our

  1488. sufferings

  1489. and struggles

  1490. he's

  1491. compassionate

  1492. and he's

  1493. merciful

  1494. we read

  1495. this from

  1496. the assurance

  1497. of pardon

  1498. in Hebrews

  1499. 4

  1500. we do

  1501. not have

  1502. a high

  1503. priest

  1504. who is

  1505. unable

  1506. to

  1507. sympathize

  1508. with our

  1509. weaknesses

  1510. but one

  1511. who in

  1512. every respect

  1513. has been

  1514. tempted

  1515. as we

  1516. are

  1517. yet

  1518. without

  1519. sin

  1520. let us

  1521. then

  1522. with confidence

  1523. draw near

  1524. to his throne

  1525. of grace

  1526. that we may

  1527. receive mercy

  1528. and find

  1529. grace to

  1530. help in

  1531. time of

  1532. need

  1533. what gives

  1534. us confidence

  1535. to approach

  1536. God's throne

  1537. confident

  1538. that we're

  1539. going to

  1540. receive mercy

  1541. there

  1542. and find

  1543. grace

  1544. there

  1545. we have

  1546. a high

  1547. priest

  1548. who mediates

  1549. for us

  1550. who sympathizes

  1551. with our

  1552. weaknesses

  1553. because he

  1554. has been

  1555. made like

  1556. us in

  1557. every respect

  1558. Jesus

  1559. gets

  1560. us

  1561. Jesus

  1562. knows

  1563. us

  1564. Jesus

  1565. sees

  1566. our

  1567. tears

  1568. Jesus

  1569. has

  1570. lived

  1571. on

  1572. this

  1573. fallen

  1574. and

  1575. broken

  1576. world

  1577. Jesus

  1578. knows

  1579. our

  1580. struggles

  1581. he

  1582. knows

  1583. how

  1584. hard

  1585. he

  1586. can

  1587. get

  1588. and

  1589. because

  1590. he

  1591. shares

  1592. our

  1593. human

  1594. nature

  1595. he

  1596. has

  1597. compassion

  1598. on

  1599. us

  1600. so

  1601. so

  1602. much

  1603. that

  1604. even

  1605. as

  1606. he

  1607. is

  1608. being

  1609. crucified

  1610. being

  1611. killed

  1612. unjustly

  1613. he

  1614. prays

  1615. and

  1616. pleads

  1617. with

  1618. his

  1619. father

  1620. on

  1621. behalf

  1622. of

  1623. the

  1624. very

  1625. people

  1626. who

  1627. are

  1628. killing

  1629. him

  1630. in

  1631. Luke

  1632. 23

  1633. 34

  1634. father

  1635. forgive

  1636. them

  1637. for

  1638. they

  1639. know

  1640. not

  1641. what

  1642. they

  1643. do

  1644. that's

  1645. a

  1646. merciful

  1647. high

  1648. priest

  1649. and

  1650. that's

  1651. a

  1652. wonderful

  1653. comfort

  1654. to

  1655. us

  1656. who

  1657. are

  1658. needy

  1659. sinners

  1660. but

  1661. if

  1662. mercy

  1663. is

  1664. for

  1665. the

  1666. needy

  1667. the

  1668. promise

  1669. of

  1670. Matthew

    Matthew 5:7

  1671. 5

  1672. verse

  1673. 7

  1674. seems

  1675. to

  1676. contradict

  1677. that

  1678. because

  1679. it

  1680. says

  1681. blessed

  1682. are

  1683. the

  1684. merciful

  1685. for

  1686. they

  1687. shall

  1688. receive

  1689. mercy

  1690. this

  1691. is my

  1692. third

  1693. point

  1694. who

  1695. receives

  1696. mercy

  1697. is

  1698. God's

  1699. mercy

  1700. reserved

  1701. for

  1702. those

  1703. who

  1704. are

  1705. needy

  1706. those

  1707. who

  1708. need

  1709. mercy

  1710. or

  1711. for

  1712. those

  1713. who

  1714. are

  1715. full

  1716. of

  1717. mercy

  1718. the

  1719. answer

  1720. the

  1721. answer

  1722. is

  1723. yes

  1724. to

  1725. both

  1726. first

  1727. it's

  1728. the

  1729. merciful

  1730. who

  1731. receives

  1732. mercy

  1733. the

  1734. bible

  1735. teaches

  1736. this

  1737. consistently

  1738. 2

  1739. samuel

  1740. 22

  1741. 26

  1742. and

  1743. psalm

  1744. 18

  1745. 25

  1746. which

  1747. quotes

  1748. it

  1749. says

  1750. with

  1751. the

  1752. merciful

  1753. you

  1754. show

  1755. yourself

  1756. merciful

  1757. proverbs

  1758. 11

  1759. 17

  1760. says

  1761. a

  1762. merciful

  1763. person

  1764. does

  1765. himself

  1766. good

  1767. but

  1768. the

  1769. cruel

  1770. person

  1771. does

  1772. himself

  1773. harm

  1774. james

  1775. 2

  1776. 13

  1777. judgment

  1778. is

  1779. without

  1780. mercy

  1781. to

  1782. one

  1783. who

  1784. has

  1785. shown

  1786. no

  1787. mercy

  1788. jesus

  1789. says

  1790. later

  1791. on

  1792. in

  1793. matthew

  1794. 6

  1795. 14

  1796. to

  1797. 15

  1798. if

  1799. you

  1800. forgive

  1801. others

  1802. their

  1803. trespasses

  1804. your

  1805. heavenly

  1806. father

  1807. will

  1808. also

  1809. forgive

  1810. you

  1811. but

  1812. if

  1813. you

  1814. do

  1815. not

  1816. forgive

  1817. others

  1818. their

  1819. trespasses

  1820. neither

  1821. will

  1822. your

  1823. father

  1824. forgive

  1825. your

  1826. trespasses

  1827. the

  1828. testimony

  1829. of

  1830. scripture

  1831. is

  1832. consistent

  1833. and

  1834. clear

  1835. only

  1836. those

  1837. who

  1838. show

  1839. mercy

  1840. to

  1841. others

  1842. will

  1843. receive

  1844. mercy

  1845. from

  1846. god

  1847. but

  1848. wait a

  1849. minute

  1850. aren't

  1851. we

  1852. saved

  1853. by

  1854. grace

  1855. through

  1856. faith

  1857. alone

  1858. doesn't

  1859. this

  1860. sound

  1861. like

  1862. earning

  1863. god's

  1864. mercy

  1865. with

  1866. our

  1867. own

  1868. mercy

  1869. isn't

  1870. that

  1871. salvation

  1872. by

  1873. works

  1874. and

  1875. not

  1876. by

  1877. grace

  1878. these

  1879. are

  1880. good

  1881. questions

  1882. to

  1883. raise

  1884. while

  1885. it

  1886. is

  1887. true

  1888. that

  1889. merciful

  1890. people

  1891. receive

  1892. god's

  1893. mercy

  1894. that

  1895. does

  1896. not

  1897. therefore

  1898. mean

  1899. that

  1900. god's

  1901. that

  1902. we

  1903. merit

  1904. god's

  1905. mercy

  1906. by

  1907. our

  1908. mercifulness

  1909. if

  1910. that

  1911. were

  1912. the

  1913. case

  1914. it

  1915. would

  1916. no

  1917. longer

  1918. be

  1919. mercy

  1920. we

  1921. remember

  1922. mercy

  1923. by

  1924. definition

  1925. is

  1926. given

  1927. to

  1928. someone

  1929. who

  1930. is

  1931. needy

  1932. someone

  1933. who

  1934. is

  1935. not

  1936. entitled

  1937. to

  1938. anything

  1939. or

  1940. someone

  1941. who

  1942. hasn't

  1943. earned

  1944. what

  1945. it

  1946. is

  1947. that

  1948. they

  1949. receive

  1950. if

  1951. we

  1952. merit

  1953. mercy

  1954. then

  1955. mercy

  1956. ceases

  1957. to

  1958. be

  1959. mercy

  1960. it's

  1961. a

  1962. contradiction

  1963. in

  1964. terms

  1965. so

  1966. while

  1967. mercifulness

  1968. is

  1969. a

  1970. criterion

  1971. that

  1972. God

  1973. uses

  1974. in

  1975. his

  1976. judgment

  1977. to

  1978. decide

  1979. who

  1980. will

  1981. receive

  1982. mercy

  1983. in

  1984. the

  1985. end

  1986. it

  1987. is

  1988. not

  1989. the

  1990. basis

  1991. for

  1992. our

  1993. salvation

  1994. this

  1995. is

  1996. the

  1997. same

  1998. tension

  1999. that

  2000. runs

  2001. throughout

  2002. all

  2003. of

  2004. scripture

  2005. we

  2006. are

  2007. saved

  2008. by

  2009. grace

  2010. alone

  2011. by

  2012. God's

  2013. grace

  2014. alone

  2015. through

  2016. faith

  2017. in

  2018. Jesus

  2019. Christ

  2020. alone

  2021. but

  2022. on

  2023. judgment

  2024. day

  2025. it

  2026. says

  2027. all

  2028. over

  2029. scripture

  2030. that

  2031. we

  2032. will

  2033. be

  2034. judged

  2035. on

  2036. the

  2037. basis

  2038. of

  2039. our

  2040. works

  2041. how

  2042. can

  2043. those

  2044. two

  2045. things

  2046. both

  2047. be

  2048. true

  2049. !

  2050. Because

  2051. those

  2052. who

  2053. are

  2054. saved

  2055. by

  2056. God's

  2057. grace

  2058. through

  2059. faith

  2060. always

  2061. bear

  2062. fruit

  2063. in

  2064. keeping

  2065. with

  2066. repentance

  2067. because

  2068. true

  2069. faith

  2070. is

  2071. always

  2072. accompanied

  2073. by

  2074. good

  2075. works

  2076. our

  2077. mercifulness

  2078. is the

  2079. evidence

  2080. the

  2081. proof

  2082. and the

  2083. fruit

  2084. of our

  2085. faith

  2086. in

  2087. Jesus

  2088. Christ

  2089. alone

  2090. of

  2091. the

  2092. fact

  2093. that

  2094. we

  2095. have

  2096. truly

  2097. received

  2098. !

  2099. God's

  2100. mercy

  2101. as

  2102. I

  2103. mentioned

  2104. earlier

  2105. we

  2106. become

  2107. merciful

  2108. by

  2109. receiving

  2110. God's

  2111. mercy

  2112. we

  2113. love

  2114. because

  2115. he

  2116. first

  2117. loved

  2118. us

  2119. we

  2120. forgive

  2121. because

  2122. he

  2123. first

  2124. forgave

  2125. us

  2126. we

  2127. show

  2128. mercy

  2129. because

  2130. he

  2131. first

  2132. showed

  2133. us

  2134. mercy

  2135. and

  2136. those

  2137. who

  2138. have

  2139. received

  2140. God's

  2141. mercy

  2142. are

  2143. so

  2144. transformed

  2145. by

  2146. that

  2147. mercy

  2148. that

  2149. they

  2150. become

  2151. merciful

  2152. and

  2153. that's

  2154. why

  2155. mercifulness

  2156. is

  2157. the

  2158. criterion

  2159. that

  2160. God

  2161. uses

  2162. to

  2163. dispense

  2164. his

  2165. final

  2166. judgment

  2167. his

  2168. final

  2169. mercy

  2170. on

  2171. that

  2172. judgment

  2173. day

  2174. it's

  2175. a

  2176. cascading

  2177. waterfall

  2178. of

  2179. mercy

  2180. mercy

  2181. from

  2182. God

  2183. to

  2184. us

  2185. and

  2186. mercy

  2187. from

  2188. us

  2189. to

  2190. others

  2191. and

  2192. then

  2193. again

  2194. mercy

  2195. from

  2196. God

  2197. to

  2198. us

  2199. to

  2200. those

  2201. who

  2202. have

  2203. shown

  2204. mercy

  2205. we

  2206. find

  2207. a

  2208. perfect

  2209. illustration

  2210. of

  2211. this

  2212. in

  2213. the

  2214. parable

  2215. of

  2216. the

  2217. unmerciful

  2218. servant

  2219. in

  2220. chapter

  2221. 18

  2222. verse

  2223. 23

  2224. to

  2225. 25

  2226. Ed

  2227. preached

  2228. a

  2229. wonderful

  2230. sermon

  2231. on us

  2232. if you

  2233. missed

  2234. that

  2235. I

  2236. encourage

  2237. you

  2238. to

  2239. find

  2240. it

  2241. on

  2242. our

  2243. website

  2244. and

  2245. listen

  2246. to

  2247. it

  2248. in

  2249. the

  2250. parable

  2251. there

  2252. is

  2253. a

  2254. servant

  2255. who

  2256. owes

  2257. a

  2258. king

  2259. 10,000

  2260. talents

  2261. one

  2262. talent

  2263. was

  2264. about

  2265. 6,000

  2266. denarii

  2267. and

  2268. one

  2269. denarius

  2270. was

  2271. a

  2272. day's

  2273. wage

  2274. for

  2275. a

  2276. common

  2277. laborer

  2278. so

  2279. if

  2280. you

  2281. do

  2282. some

  2283. math

  2284. minimum

  2285. wage

  2286. in

  2287. Massachusetts

  2288. is

  2289. $15

  2290. an

  2291. hour

  2292. that

  2293. times

  2294. an

  2295. 8

  2296. hour

  2297. work

  2298. day

  2299. is

  2300. about

  2301. 120

  2302. a

  2303. day

  2304. 120

  2305. times

  2306. 6,000

  2307. because

  2308. it's

  2309. 6,000

  2310. denarii

  2311. is

  2312. 720,000

  2313. so

  2314. one

  2315. talent

  2316. is

  2317. 720,000

  2318. times

  2319. 10,000

  2320. that's

  2321. 7.2

  2322. billion

  2323. dollars

  2324. it's

  2325. it's

  2326. a

  2327. staggering

  2328. unimaginable

  2329. amount

  2330. of money

  2331. this

  2332. servant

  2333. owes

  2334. the

  2335. king

  2336. 7.2

  2337. billion

  2338. dollars

  2339. and

  2340. he

  2341. has

  2342. no

  2343. means

  2344. understandably

  2345. to

  2346. repay

  2347. this

  2348. debt

  2349. and

  2350. so

  2351. he

  2352. and

  2353. his

  2354. wife

  2355. and

  2356. kids

  2357. are

  2358. all

  2359. about

  2360. to

  2361. be

  2362. sold

  2363. into

  2364. slavery

  2365. which

  2366. is

  2367. how

  2368. they

  2369. dealt

  2370. with

  2371. unpaid

  2372. debt

  2373. in

  2374. those

  2375. days

  2376. but

  2377. then

  2378. the

  2379. servant

  2380. falls

  2381. on

  2382. his

  2383. knees

  2384. and

  2385. implores

  2386. the

  2387. king

  2388. have

  2389. patience

  2390. with

  2391. me

  2392. and

  2393. I

  2394. will

  2395. pay

  2396. you

  2397. everything

  2398. and

  2399. the

  2400. king

  2401. has

  2402. compassion

  2403. on

  2404. the

  2405. servant

  2406. and

  2407. he

  2408. shows

  2409. him

  2410. mercy

  2411. by

  2412. forgiving

  2413. this

  2414. is

  2415. amazing

  2416. the

  2417. entirety

  2418. of

  2419. that

  2420. 7.2

  2421. billion

  2422. dollar

  2423. debt

  2424. but

  2425. when

  2426. this

  2427. servant

  2428. finds

  2429. one of

  2430. his

  2431. fellow

  2432. servants

  2433. so

  2434. they're

  2435. equals

  2436. it's

  2437. not

  2438. even

  2439. king

  2440. to

  2441. the

  2442. servant

  2443. !

  2444. twelve

  2445. thousand

  2446. dollars

  2447. he

  2448. seizes

  2449. him

  2450. chokes

  2451. him

  2452. demanding

  2453. immediate

  2454. payment

  2455. and

  2456. when

  2457. that

  2458. servant

  2459. pleads

  2460. with

  2461. him

  2462. in

  2463. the

  2464. very

  2465. much

  2466. the

  2467. same

  2468. way

  2469. that

  2470. he

  2471. earlier

  2472. pled

  2473. with

  2474. the

  2475. king

  2476. saying

  2477. have

  2478. patience

  2479. with

  2480. me

  2481. he

  2482. has

  2483. no

  2484. mercy

  2485. and

  2486. he

  2487. throws

  2488. his

  2489. fellow

  2490. servant

  2491. into

  2492. prison

  2493. !

  2494. And

  2495. when

  2496. that

  2497. event

  2498. is

  2499. reported

  2500. to

  2501. the

  2502. king

  2503. the

  2504. king

  2505. summons

  2506. this

  2507. unmerciful

  2508. servant

  2509. and says

  2510. to him

  2511. you

  2512. wicked

  2513. servant

  2514. I

  2515. forgave

  2516. you

  2517. all

  2518. that

  2519. debt

  2520. because

  2521. you

  2522. pleaded

  2523. with

  2524. me

  2525. and

  2526. should

  2527. not

  2528. you

  2529. have

  2530. had

  2531. mercy

  2532. on

  2533. your

  2534. fellow

  2535. servant

  2536. as

  2537. I

  2538. had

  2539. mercy

  2540. on

  2541. you

  2542. and

  2543. then

  2544. the

  2545. unmerciful

  2546. servant

  2547. gets thrown

  2548. into

  2549. prison

  2550. and

  2551. Jesus

  2552. concludes

  2553. the

  2554. parable

  2555. by saying

  2556. so

  2557. also

  2558. my

  2559. heavenly

  2560. father

  2561. will

  2562. do

  2563. to

  2564. every

  2565. one

  2566. of

  2567. you

  2568. if

  2569. you

  2570. do

  2571. not

  2572. forgive

  2573. your

  2574. brother

  2575. from

  2576. your

  2577. heart

  2578. so

  2579. here's

  2580. the

  2581. principle

  2582. forgiven

  2583. people

  2584. forgive

  2585. people

  2586. those

  2587. who

  2588. have

  2589. received

  2590. mercy

  2591. show

  2592. mercy

  2593. to

  2594. others

  2595. why

  2596. was

  2597. this

  2598. servant

  2599. so

  2600. unmerciful

  2601. toward

  2602. his

  2603. fellow

  2604. servant

  2605. why

  2606. was

  2607. he

  2608. so

  2609. impatient

  2610. to

  2611. get

  2612. his

  2613. money

  2614. back

  2615. it's

  2616. like

  2617. somebody

  2618. is

  2619. breathing

  2620. down

  2621. his

  2622. neck

  2623. getting

  2624. demanding

  2625. repayment

  2626. from

  2627. him

  2628. remember

  2629. what

  2630. he

  2631. said

  2632. to

  2633. the

  2634. king

  2635. have

  2636. patience

  2637. with

  2638. me

  2639. and

  2640. I

  2641. will

  2642. pay

  2643. you

  2644. everything

  2645. this

  2646. servant

  2647. is still

  2648. living

  2649. like he

  2650. needs

  2651. to

  2652. repay

  2653. everything

  2654. he's

  2655. not

  2656. living

  2657. in light

  2658. of the

  2659. fact

  2660. that

  2661. his

  2662. staggering

  2663. debt

  2664. has

  2665. been

  2666. fully

  2667. forgiven

  2668. no

  2669. wonder

  2670. he's

  2671. breathing

  2672. down

  2673. the

  2674. neck

  2675. of

  2676. his

  2677. fellow

  2678. servant

  2679. saying

  2680. demand

  2681. payment

  2682. that's

  2683. Jesus'

  2684. point

  2685. why

  2686. is

  2687. our

  2688. forgiveness

  2689. of

  2690. others

  2691. our

  2692. mercifulness

  2693. toward

  2694. others

  2695. the

  2696. criterion

  2697. by which

  2698. God

  2699. judges

  2700. us

  2701. in the

  2702. end

  2703. because

  2704. our

  2705. merciful

  2706. toward

  2707. others

  2708. is

  2709. the

  2710. true

  2711. test

  2712. of

  2713. whether

  2714. or

  2715. not

  2716. we

  2717. have

  2718. really

  2719. entrusted

  2720. ourselves

  2721. to

  2722. the

  2723. mercy

  2724. of

  2725. God

  2726. whether

  2727. or

  2728. not

  2729. we

  2730. really

  2731. have

  2732. true

  2733. faith

  2734. are

  2735. you

  2736. living

  2737. today

  2738. like

  2739. you

  2740. still

  2741. have

  2742. this

  2743. insurmountable

  2744. debt

  2745. do

  2746. you

  2747. live

  2748. like

  2749. you

  2750. have

  2751. to

  2752. pay

  2753. God

  2754. back

  2755. sure

  2756. you

  2757. know

  2758. your

  2759. theology

  2760. in

  2761. your

  2762. head

  2763. we're

  2764. saved

  2765. by

  2766. grace

  2767. not

  2768. by

  2769. works

  2770. we're

  2771. saved

  2772. through

  2773. faith

  2774. alone

  2775. and

  2776. deep

  2777. inside

  2778. your

  2779. heart

  2780. but

  2781. deep

  2782. inside

  2783. your

  2784. heart

  2785. do

  2786. you

  2787. feel

  2788. though

  2789. that

  2790. you

  2791. have

  2792. to

  2793. earn

  2794. God's

  2795. favor

  2796. somehow

  2797. by

  2798. your

  2799. obedience

  2800. that

  2801. you

  2802. have

  2803. to

  2804. by

  2805. your

  2806. obedience

  2807. pry

  2808. mercy

  2809. out of

  2810. God's

  2811. reluctant

  2812. hands

  2813. if so

  2814. then

  2815. you are

  2816. not

  2817. going to

  2818. be

  2819. merciful

  2820. toward

  2821. others

  2822. because

  2823. merit

  2824. is the

  2825. name

  2826. of your

  2827. spiritual

  2828. game

  2829. and

  2830. you're

  2831. going

  2832. to

  2833. judge

  2834. others

  2835. the

  2836. same

  2837. way

  2838. you

  2839. imagine

  2840. yourself

  2841. being

  2842. judged

  2843. by

  2844. God

  2845. remember

  2846. Jesus

  2847. is a

  2848. merciful

  2849. high

  2850. priest

  2851. because

  2852. he

  2853. was

  2854. made

  2855. like

  2856. us

  2857. in

  2858. every

  2859. way

  2860. he

  2861. knows

  2862. us

  2863. our

  2864. weaknesses

  2865. and

  2866. sufferings

  2867. and

  2868. struggles

  2869. and

  2870. we

  2871. have

  2872. that

  2873. same

  2874. benefit

  2875. when

  2876. it

  2877. comes

  2878. to

  2879. the

  2880. way

  2881. we

  2882. treat

  2883. our

  2884. fellow

  2885. sinners

  2886. our

  2887. fellow

  2888. servants

  2889. around

  2890. us

  2891. we're

  2892. like

  2893. them

  2894. we

  2895. have

  2896. been

  2897. there

  2898. we

  2899. know

  2900. that

  2901. weakness

  2902. we

  2903. have

  2904. sinned

  2905. so

  2906. when

  2907. we

  2908. find

  2909. ourselves

  2910. in a

  2911. position

  2912. of

  2913. power

  2914. over

  2915. someone

  2916. who

  2917. has

  2918. sinned

  2919. against

  2920. us

  2921. and

  2922. when

  2923. they

  2924. are

  2925. finally

  2926. in

  2927. our

  2928. hands

  2929. and

  2930. it

  2931. is

  2932. within

  2933. our

  2934. rights

  2935. to

  2936. avenge

  2937. ourselves

  2938. do we

  2939. see

  2940. ourselves

  2941. in the

  2942. place of

  2943. that fellow

  2944. sinner

  2945. as ones

  2946. who have

  2947. already

  2948. received

  2949. !

  2950. mercy

  2951. from

  2952. God

  2953. it

  2954. is

  2955. the

  2956. mercy

  2957. of

  2958. God

  2959. that

  2960. melts

  2961. our

  2962. hard

  2963. hearts

  2964. and

  2965. makes

  2966. them

  2967. merciful

  2968. so

  2969. the

  2970. intention

  2971. of

  2972. this

  2973. teaching

  2974. by

  2975. Jesus

  2976. isn't

  2977. for

  2978. us

  2979. to

  2980. go

  2981. home

  2982. now

  2983. and

  2984. say

  2985. am

  2986. I

  2987. being

  2988. merciful

  2989. enough

  2990. am

  2991. I

  2992. merciful

  2993. enough

  2994. today

  2995. do I

  2996. have

  2997. enough

  2998. mercy

  2999. am

  3000. I

  3001. going

  3002. to

  3003. receive

  3004. mercy

  3005. in

  3006. the

  3007. end

  3008. that's

  3009. not

  3010. the

  3011. point

  3012. because

  3013. by

  3014. trying

  3015. to

  3016. become

  3017. more

  3018. merciful

  3019. like

  3020. that

  3021. you're

  3022. not

  3023. going

  3024. to

  3025. become

  3026. more

  3027. merciful

  3028. forget

  3029. the

  3030. requirement

  3031. for

  3032. mercy

  3033. because

  3034. the

  3035. requirement

  3036. that has

  3037. been

  3038. satisfied

  3039. by

  3040. Christ

  3041. on

  3042. the

  3043. cross

  3044. is

  3045. what

  3046. makes

  3047. us

  3048. merciful

  3049. so

  3050. relish

  3051. that

  3052. mercy

  3053. you have

  3054. received

  3055. from

  3056. God

  3057. receive

  3058. freely

  3059. and

  3060. fully

  3061. that

  3062. mercy

  3063. every

  3064. single

  3065. day

  3066. because

  3067. God

  3068. says

  3069. his

  3070. mercies

  3071. are

  3072. new

  3073. every

  3074. morning

  3075. because

  3076. surely

  3077. goodness

  3078. and mercy

  3079. shall

  3080. follow

  3081. me

  3082. all

  3083. the

  3084. days

  3085. of

  3086. my

  3087. life

  3088. psalm

  3089. 23

  3090. 6

  3091. says

  3092. God's

  3093. mercy

  3094. will

  3095. follow

  3096. you

  3097. to

  3098. every

  3099. place

  3100. where

  3101. you

  3102. have

  3103. sinned

  3104. and

  3105. to

  3106. every

  3107. place

  3108. where

  3109. you

  3110. have

  3111. been

  3112. his

  3113. mercy

  3114. will

  3115. follow

  3116. you

  3117. and

  3118. you

  3119. receive

  3120. mercy

  3121. mercy

  3122. mercy

  3123. you

  3124. can

  3125. trust

  3126. God

  3127. to

  3128. take

  3129. care

  3130. of

  3131. the

  3132. rest

  3133. that

  3134. you

  3135. will

  3136. become

  3137. merciful

  3138. and

  3139. that

  3140. you

  3141. will

  3142. receive

  3143. mercy

  3144. in

  3145. the

  3146. end

  3147. as

  3148. you

  3149. 20

  3150. 21

  3151. says

  3152. but

  3153. you

  3154. beloved

  3155. building

  3156. yourselves

  3157. up

  3158. in

  3159. your

  3160. most

  3161. holy

  3162. faith

  3163. and

  3164. praying

  3165. in

  3166. the

  3167. holy

  3168. spirit

  3169. keep

  3170. yourselves

  3171. in

  3172. the

  3173. love

  3174. of

  3175. God

  3176. that's

  3177. how

  3178. we

  3179. persevere

  3180. till

  3181. the

  3182. end

  3183. keep

  3184. yourselves

  3185. in

  3186. the

  3187. love

  3188. of

  3189. God

  3190. keep

  3191. yourselves

  3192. !

  3193. in

  3194. the

  3195. mercy

  3196. of

  3197. God

  3198. waiting

  3199. for

  3200. the

  3201. mercy

  3202. of

  3203. our

  3204. Lord

  3205. Jesus

  3206. Christ

  3207. that

  3208. leads

  3209. to

  3210. eternal

  3211. life

  3212. if

  3213. we

  3214. keep

  3215. ourselves

  3216. in

  3217. the

  3218. love

  3219. and

  3220. mercy

  3221. of

  3222. God

  3223. then

  3224. we

  3225. will

  3226. be

  3227. merciful

  3228. and

  3229. we

  3230. will

  3231. receive

  3232. mercy

  3233. of

  3234. our

  3235. Lord

  3236. Jesus

  3237. Christ

  3238. that

  3239. leads

  3240. to

  3241. eternal

  3242. life

  3243. let's

  3244. pray

  3245. together

  3246. father

  3247. we

  3248. don't

  3249. want

  3250. to

  3251. lose

  3252. the

  3253. sense

  3254. of

  3255. wonder

  3256. before

  3257. your

  3258. mercy

  3259. amaze

  3260. us

  3261. again

  3262. with

  3263. your

  3264. mercy

  3265. melt

  3266. our

  3267. hardened

  3268. hearts

  3269. with

  3270. your

  3271. mercy

  3272. and

  3273. help

  3274. us

  3275. give

  3276. us

  3277. eyes

  3278. to

  3279. see

  3280. your

  3281. mercy

  3282. which

  3283. follows

  3284. us

  3285. everywhere

  3286. we

  3287. go

  3288. every

  3289. single

  3290. day

  3291. that

  3292. every

  3293. single

  3294. day

  3295. we

  3296. become

  3297. more

  3298. more

  3299. characterized

  3300. by

  3301. mercifulness

  3302. thank

  3303. you

  3304. God

  3305. you

  3306. are

  3307. merciful

  3308. thank

  3309. you

  3310. God

  3311. in

  3312. Jesus

  3313. name

  3314. we

  3315. pray

  3316. amen

  3317. through

  3318. Thank you.
