  1. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  2. Heavenly Father,

  3. who dares to approach your throne

  4. without purity of heart?

  5. Lord, this is such a

  6. such a big and profound truth

  7. that we are wrestling with this morning

  8. and I desperately need your help, Lord.

  9. Show us how to be pure in heart

  10. because we want to see you.

  11. We want to see you, Lord.

  12. Amen.

  13. Give us ears to hear

  14. and eyes to see

  15. that we might behold

  16. the glory of God

  17. in the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  18. It's in his precious name we now pray.

  19. Amen.

  20. Please stand and if you are able to honor God

  21. as we read from his word,

  22. I will read verses 1 to 12,

  23. but I'll be focusing only in on verse 8 for the sermon.

  24. Seeing the crowd,

  25. he went up on the mountainside.

  26. And when he sat down,

  27. his disciples came to him.

  28. And he opened his mouth

  29. and taught them, saying,

  30. Blessed are the poor in spirit,

  31. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  32. Blessed are those who mourn,

  33. for they shall be comforted.

  34. Blessed are the meek,

  35. for they shall inherit the earth.

  36. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,

  37. for they shall be satisfied.

  38. Blessed are the merciful,

  39. for they shall receive mercy.

  40. Blessed are the pure in heart,

  41. for they shall see God.

  42. Blessed are the peacemakers,

  43. for they shall be called sons of God.

  44. Blessed are those who are persecuted

  45. for righteousness' sake,

  46. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  47. Blessed are you when others revile you

  48. and persecute you

  49. and utter all kinds of evil against you

  50. falsely on my account.

  51. Rejoice and be glad,

  52. for your reward is great in heaven.

  53. For so they persecuted the prophets

  54. who were before you.

  55. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  56. Please be seated.

  57. Amen.

  58. It is not an exaggeration to say

  59. that to see God

  60. is the sum and goal of all religion.

  61. One of the most influential philosophers

  62. of Western civilization

  63. was a 13th century pastor

  64. named Thomas Aquinas.

  65. And he writes in his book,

  66. Summa Contra Gentiles.

  67. Now the ultimate end of man

  68. and of every intellectual substance

  69. is called felicity or happiness.

  70. Because this is what every intellectual substance

  71. desires as an ultimate end

  72. and for its own sake alone.

  73. Therefore,

  74. the ultimate happiness and felicity

  75. of every intellectual substance

  76. is to know God.

  77. And so it is said in Matthew 5, 8,

  78. Blessed are the pure in heart,

  79. for they shall see God.

  80. And in John 17, verse 3,

    John 17:3

  81. This is eternal life,

  82. that they may know thee,

  83. the only true God.

  84. The ultimate end of man,

  85. the purpose of man,

  86. is to know God and to see God.

  87. That is our ultimate salvation and glory.

  88. But how can we,

  89. as human beings,

  90. sinful human beings,

  91. attain that ultimate end?

  92. Who is sufficient for such things?

  93. That's the subject of the sixth beatitude.

  94. Blessed are the pure in heart,

  95. for they shall see God.

  96. Who gets to see God?

  97. The pure in heart.

  98. And that's my main point this morning.

  99. Those with undivided hearts

  100. shall see God with unveiled faces.

  101. We're going to first talk about the condition

  102. that we must be pure in heart.

  103. And then we're going to talk about the solution,

  104. which is to have a new heart.

  105. And then third,

  106. we're going to talk about the promise of seeing God.

  107. Purity of heart is the condition for seeing God

  108. because God is holy

  109. and can admit no evil or sin into his presence.

  110. It says in Habakkuk 1, verse 13,

    Habakkuk 1:13

  111. that God is of purer eyes than to see evil

  112. and cannot look at wrong.

  113. Our God is holy, holy, holy.

  114. Thrice holy.

  115. As holy as he can possibly be.

  116. He's the consuming fire

  117. who consumes sinners with everlasting burnings,

  118. it says in Deuteronomy 4, 24.

  119. For this reason,

  120. only the pure in heart can see God.

  121. We read from Psalm 24 for our call to worship this morning.

  122. Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?

  123. And who shall stand in his holy place?

  124. In other words,

  125. who gets to see God?

  126. Who can go enter into his presence

  127. and stand in his presence and behold him?

  128. And this was the answer.

  129. He who has clean hands and a pure heart,

  130. who does not lift up his soul to what is false

  131. and does not swear deceitfully.

  132. The pure in heart get to enter God's presence.

  133. But what does it mean to be pure in heart?

  134. In order to understand that,

  135. let's first consider what the heart means

  136. and then secondly, what purity means.

  137. The fact that this beatitude emphasizes the heart

  138. really cuts through all the fluff of religion.

  139. Jesus is getting to the heart of spirituality.

  140. It doesn't say blessed are the pure in appearance.

  141. Blessed are those who are pure on the outside.

  142. It says blessed are the pure in heart,

  143. those who are pure on the inside.

  144. The heart doesn't refer to the physical organ

  145. that pumps blood,

  146. but to the inner center of a person.

  147. It encompasses what we might otherwise think of

  148. as the heart, the mind, and the soul or the spirit.

  149. When we speak of the heart in English,

  150. we often mean the emotional center of a person,

  151. the seed of our emotions,

  152. our faculty of feeling.

  153. The heart does include our emotions.

  154. For example, Deuteronomy 28, verse 47 says

    Deuteronomy 28:47

  155. that we ought to serve the Lord our God

  156. with joyfulness and gladness of heart.

  157. The heart is where we feel joyfulness and gladness.

  158. So it does include our feelings, the heart.

  159. But it is not less than that,

  160. but it's also more than that.

  161. It's more than our feelings.

  162. It includes what we would normally call the mind.

  163. The seed of our thoughts, the intentions,

  164. the moral intentions, our will.

  165. For example, in Hebrews 4.12,

  166. it says that the word of God

  167. discerns the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

  168. Later in Matthew 9.4, Jesus says to the scribes,

  169. why do you think evil in your hearts?

  170. The heart thinks.

  171. The heart thinks.

  172. It has thoughts.

  173. This is why the terms heart and mind

  174. are often used interchangeably in Scripture.

  175. In 1 Chronicles 12.38,

  176. acting with a whole heart

  177. is in parallel with acting with a single mind.

  178. They're one and the same thing.

  179. So the heart encompasses what we would think of

  180. as the heart and the mind,

  181. and also in Scripture,

  182. what we might think of as the soul or the spirit.

  183. Proverbs 24.12 says that God weighs the heart of man

  184. and that he also keeps watch over his soul.

  185. Proverbs 16.2 says,

  186. all the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes,

  187. but the Lord weighs the spirit.

  188. Almost identical proverb in Proverbs 21.2,

  189. it says, every way of a man is right in his own eyes,

  190. but the Lord weighs the heart.

  191. Interchangeably used.

  192. Over and over again,

  193. the Bible mentions heart and soul together,

  194. not to refer to two separate, distinct faculties,

  195. but to refer to the whole unified inner person.

  196. Heart and soul.

  197. I am with you, heart and soul,

  198. meaning I am with you as a whole being.

  199. In summary then,

  200. the heart is the emotional and mental

  201. and spiritual center of a person.

  202. It is the inward fountain

  203. from which flows everything in life.

  204. All our thoughts, all our actions,

  205. all our attitudes,

  206. all our affections and desires

  207. are downstream from our heart.

  208. This is why it is erroneous to think

  209. that emotional care and soul care

  210. are separate, unrelated, disparate issues.

  211. Both of them have to do with the heart.

  212. This is why it is unbiblical

  213. to think of mental health

  214. and spiritual health

  215. as discrete, non-overlapping categories.

  216. Apart from a small fraction of issues

  217. that are primarily neurological

  218. and can be traced to its origin in the brain,

  219. most mental health issues

  220. are actually matters of the mind,

  221. the soul, and the heart.

  222. They are spiritual matters

  223. that the Bible addresses.

  224. From Genesis to Revelation,

  225. the Bible focuses relentlessly on the heart.

  226. And in the Sermon on the Mount,

  227. Jesus focuses relentlessly on the human heart.

  228. In Matthew 5, 28,

  229. Jesus says that not only a man

  230. who commits physical adultery with a woman

  231. that is not his wife,

  232. but also a man who looks at a woman lustfully

  233. commits adultery with her in his heart.

  234. That raises the bar of obedience, doesn't it?

  235. You see, if what matters is purity of heart,

  236. not just purity of appearance,

  237. purity on the outside,

  238. then the mentality that,

  239. well, as long as I don't have extramarital sex

  240. or as long as I don't have premarital sex,

  241. then I'm in the clear, is wrong.

  242. Refusing to cross that clear line in the sand

  243. that the Bible draws

  244. is the bare minimum of obedience.

  245. A man who has been married to his wife

  246. for 40 years without ever sleeping

  247. with another woman

  248. can actually be a serial adulterer

  249. who has committed adulteries

  250. 100 times over in his heart

  251. by looking at porn regularly.

  252. Maybe you don't look at porn.

  253. But you have wandering eyes.

  254. Lustful glances at passersby.

  255. Maybe you don't scroll through porn,

  256. but you scroll through

  257. those suggestive photos of influencers

  258. on Instagram.

  259. If what matters is not outward purity,

  260. but inward purity,

  261. then these things that nobody else sees,

  262. these things that nobody else condemns you for,

  263. matter.

  264. Because they betray an impure heart.

  265. This is why Jesus condemns the scribes and the Pharisees

  266. in Matthew 23, 25 to 27.

  267. Woe to you, hypocrites!

  268. For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate,

  269. but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.

  270. First clean the inside of the cup and the plate,

  271. then the outside also may be clean.

  272. For you are like whitewashed tombs,

  273. which outwardly appear beautiful,

  274. but within are full of dead people's bones

  275. and all uncleanness.

  276. True purity is from the inside out,

  277. not outside in.

  278. This is a revolutionary truth.

  279. Again, in Matthew 6, 19 to 24,

  280. Jesus speaks of the heart

  281. when warning against the alluring power of money

  282. in our lives.

  283. He says,

  284. no one can serve two masters.

  285. Either he will love the one or hate the other,

  286. or he'll hate the one and love the other.

  287. You cannot serve both God and money.

  288. So he says,

  289. because of that,

  290. he enjoins us to choose our treasure carefully.

  291. He says,

  292. for where your treasure is,

  293. there your heart will be also.

  294. If you treasure money and the things of earth,

  295. then you will perish along with your money.

  296. But if you treasure righteousness

  297. and the things of heaven,

  298. then you will have eternal rewards in heaven.

  299. What matters is,

  300. where is your heart?

  301. Where is your heart this morning?

  302. What do you treasure with your heart?

  303. Because you can be a billionaire

  304. who has donated a million dollars

  305. to a good cause,

  306. even to a church,

  307. but still be an idolater of the heart

  308. who worships money.

  309. Likewise, you can be a poor widow

  310. who gives two small copper coins

  311. as an offering to God,

  312. which is the equivalent of not quite even

  313. two measly dollars.

  314. And yet Jesus said of that poor widow

  315. in Mark 12, 43, 44,

  316. truly I say to you,

  317. this poor widow has put in more

  318. than all those who are contributing

  319. to the offering box.

  320. For they all contributed out of their abundance,

  321. but she out of her poverty

  322. has put in everything she had,

  323. all she had to live on.

  324. What kind of math is this?

  325. It's the mathematics of the heart.

  326. What matters is the heart.

  327. In Matthew 15, 10 to 20,

  328. the Pharisees and the scribes challenge Jesus,

  329. saying that your disciples

  330. don't wash their hands before they eat.

  331. They don't go through the Jewish ritual cleansing

  332. before they eat.

  333. And then Jesus teaches his disciples,

  334. it is not what goes into the mouth

  335. that defiles a person,

  336. but what comes out of the mouth

  337. that defiles a person.

  338. Do you not see?

  339. Whatever goes into the mouth

  340. passes into the stomach and is expelled.

  341. But what comes out of the mouth

  342. proceeds from the heart,

  343. and this defiles a person.

  344. For out of the heart comes evil thoughts,

  345. murder, adultery,

  346. sexual immorality,

  347. theft,

  348. false witness,

  349. slander.

  350. These are what defile a person,

  351. but to eat with unwashed hands

  352. does not defile anyone.

  353. Again, it's not what comes from outside in,

  354. but things that come from the inside out

  355. that either defile or purify us.

  356. This is important for us,

  357. and I'm hammering it home,

  358. because when we sin and when we fail,

  359. it's our automatic impulse

  360. to blame other things that are on the outside.

  361. If it weren't for those people,

  362. I wouldn't have acted that way.

  363. If it weren't these circumstances,

  364. then I would not be this way.

  365. And that's one of the persistent delusions

  366. of the modern age,

  367. that all the problems that we face

  368. are outside problems,

  369. problems external to us,

  370. when in reality,

  371. the root problem of it all

  372. is inside of us humans.

  373. This is why the historical practice

  374. of Christian asceticism and monasticism,

  375. though well-intentioned,

  376. are very misguided.

  377. They thought that,

  378. well, this world is full of temptations and sins,

  379. so if I withdraw myself from this

  380. and isolate myself

  381. and go into a monastery,

  382. or if I withdraw myself

  383. and go into the desert,

  384. into the wilderness,

  385. then there I shall be clean,

  386. and there I shall be pure in heart.

  387. The problem is that impurity is in here,

  388. and you take it with you wherever you go.

  389. That's why James 1.14 says,

  390. each person is tempted

  391. when he is lured and enticed

  392. by his own desire,

  393. the desire of the heart.

  394. Here's my obligatory

  395. D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones quote.

  396. He says,

  397. the terrible, tragic fallacy

  398. of the last hundred years

  399. has been to think

  400. that all man's troubles

  401. are due to his environment,

  402. and that to change the man,

  403. you have nothing to do

  404. but to change his environment.

  405. That is a tragic fallacy.

  406. It overlooks the fact

  407. that it was in paradise

  408. that man fell.

  409. It was in a perfect environment

  410. that he first went wrong.

  411. So to put man in a perfect environment

  412. cannot solve his problems.

  413. No, no.

  414. It is out of the heart

  415. that these things arise.

  416. Having defined heart,

  417. let's not consider

  418. what it means to be pure in heart.

  419. Psalm 24, verse 4

    Psalms 24:4

  420. defined someone with a pure heart

  421. as the person

  422. who does not lift up his soul

  423. to what is false

  424. and who does not swear deceitfully.

  425. Lifting up one's soul

  426. to something

  427. is the Hebrew idiom for worship.

  428. So someone who is pure in heart

  429. worships the true God only

  430. and worships no other gods

  431. and no idols.

  432. And likewise,

  433. a pure in heart

  434. is someone who does not

  435. swear deceitfully.

  436. Whenever he makes an oath

  437. according to the name of God,

  438. the God who is truth,

  439. whose word is truth,

  440. they keep all their oaths.

  441. They do not swear deceitfully.

  442. There is no authority

  443. or fear or desire or pressure

  444. that can make them

  445. renege on the promises

  446. that they made to God

  447. because they serve God alone.

  448. To be pure in heart

  449. is to worship God alone.

  450. That's why, in fact,

  451. the greatest commandment

  452. is to love God

  453. with all our hearts.

  454. Look at Deuteronomy 6, 45.

  455. It begins with,

  456. Hear, O Israel,

  457. the Lord our God,

  458. the Lord is one.

  459. And then it proceeds

  460. to the commandment,

  461. You shall love the Lord your God

  462. with all your heart.

  463. Those two things,

  464. that declaration of,

  465. that confession of faith,

  466. that God is one,

  467. the Lord is one,

  468. is directly and intimately related

  469. to the command

  470. to love God

  471. with all your heart.

  472. Because if there are

  473. multiple gods

  474. and multiple lords,

  475. then our hearts

  476. would rightly be divided.

  477. They would have to be divided.

  478. If you have multiple masters,

  479. then your allegiance

  480. has to be split.

  481. However, if the Lord is one,

  482. then your worship

  483. and your devotion

  484. and your obedience

  485. must be single.

  486. We must love him

  487. with all of our hearts,

  488. not just part of it.

  489. The unrivaled God

  490. demands and deserves

  491. undivided worship.

  492. That's why David prays

  493. in Psalm 86, verse 11,

    Psalms 86:11

  494. Unite my heart

  495. to fear your name.

  496. The New International Version

  497. translates it this way,

  498. Give me an undivided heart

  499. that I may fear your name.

  500. It's a beautiful image.

  501. To summarize then,

  502. to have a pure heart,

  503. is to have an undivided heart.

  504. James 4, 8 confirms this,

  505. Draw near to God

  506. and he will draw near to you.

  507. Cleanse your hands,

  508. you sinners,

  509. and purify your hearts,

  510. you double-minded.

  511. What happens

  512. when sinners

  513. purify their hearts?

  514. They go from being double-minded

  515. to being single-minded.

  516. Instead of being of two minds

  517. and two wills,

  518. instead of having a mixture

  519. of what God wants

  520. and what I want

  521. and what they want,

  522. the pure in heart

  523. have one mind.

  524. They have a single purpose.

  525. They have an undivided heart

  526. that desires to please God.

  527. That's why 19th century

  528. Danish philosopher,

  529. who was a believer,

  530. Soren Kierkegaard,

  531. hit the nail on the head

  532. when he wrote the book

  533. entitled,

  534. Purity of Heart

  535. is to Will One Thing.

  536. To Will One Thing.

  537. To Will One Thing.

  538. And that one thing

  539. must be God.

  540. The purity of heart

  541. is to will,

  542. to desire,

  543. to trust,

  544. and to love,

  545. and to worship

  546. the only true God.

  547. That's what it means

  548. to be pure in heart.

  549. Blessed are the pure in heart.

  550. But this presents us

  551. with a big problem.

  552. Because our hearts

  553. do not will

  554. one thing.

  555. At least not on our own.

  556. There's a similar beatitude

  557. to this in the Old Testament

  558. in Jeremiah 17, 8.

  559. It says,

  560. Blessed is the man

  561. who trusts in the Lord.

  562. That's the man

  563. who's pure in heart.

  564. Blessed in the man

  565. who trusts in the Lord.

  566. And that's contrasted

  567. with this statement

  568. of this curse.

  569. Cursed is the man

  570. who trusts in man.

  571. To be pure in heart,

  572. you must trust in God

  573. and not in man.

  574. Unfortunately,

  575. Jeremiah 17

  576. is given in the context

  577. of denouncing

  578. the idolatry

  579. of God's people.

  580. And it spells out

  581. the reality

  582. that the sin

  583. of God's people

  584. are written,

  585. and it says,

  586. written with a pen of iron,

  587. with a point of diamond,

  588. it is engraved

  589. on the tablet

  590. of their heart.

  591. Sin is indelibly

  592. engraved

  593. on the hearts

  594. of God's people

  595. with the point

  596. of diamond,

  597. it says.

  598. And it says,

  599. going on

  600. in chapter 17,

  601. verse 9 to 10

  602. of Jeremiah,

  603. it describes

  604. the default condition

  605. of the human heart.

  606. And it says this,

  607. the heart is deceitful

  608. above all things

  609. and desperately sick.

  610. Who can understand it?

  611. I, the Lord,

  612. search the heart

  613. and test the mind

  614. to give every man

  615. according to his ways,

  616. according to the fruit

  617. of his deeds.

  618. The heart

  619. of a sinful man

  620. by default

  621. is divided

  622. and defiled.

  623. It's deceitful.

  624. We have other allegiances.

  625. We have run

  626. after other gods.

  627. It's as if

  628. the human heart

  629. as worship ADD

  630. can't focus

  631. on one thing,

  632. distracted

  633. and divided.

  634. So much so

  635. that we deceive ourselves.

  636. It says,

  637. our hearts

  638. are deceitful.

  639. Who can understand it?

  640. Our own hearts

  641. deceive us.

  642. So who can understand

  643. and know the heart?

  644. Only the God

  645. who searches the heart

  646. and tests the mind.

  647. This is why

  648. Proverbs 20,

    Proverbs 20:9

  649. verse 9

  650. asks a rhetorical question.

  651. Who can say,

  652. I have made my heart pure.

  653. I am clean

  654. from my sin.

  655. Who can say that?

  656. How many of you

  657. in this room

  658. can say that?

  659. I have made my heart pure.

  660. No one,

  661. not a single person

  662. in the world

  663. can say that.

  664. because no one

  665. is perfectly pure in heart.

  666. No one

  667. in all of

  668. history,

  669. among all of humanity,

  670. except for Jesus.

  671. And Jesus is the solution

  672. to our problem.

  673. He gives us

  674. a new heart.

  675. To a people

  676. who are despairing

  677. of their deceitful,

  678. desperately sick hearts,

  679. God makes a wonderful promise

  680. in Jeremiah 31-32.

  681. He says,

  682. Behold,

  683. the days are coming,

  684. declares the Lord,

  685. when I will make

  686. a new covenant

  687. with the house of Israel

  688. and the house of Judah.

  689. I will put my law

  690. within them

  691. and I will write it

  692. on their hearts

  693. and they shall be

  694. my people

  695. and I will be their God.

  696. I will give them

  697. one heart

  698. and one way

  699. that they may fear me

  700. forever

  701. for their own good

  702. and the good of their children

  703. after them.

  704. God promises

  705. that one day

  706. he will give

  707. his people

  708. a single heart,

  709. one heart

  710. that will worship

  711. the one true God

  712. and he,

  713. instead of our sins

  714. being in them

  715. being engraved

  716. with a point of diamond

  717. on our hearts,

  718. he says he will

  719. inscribe with the finger

  720. of God

  721. his law

  722. onto our hearts

  723. so we obey him

  724. from the heart.

  725. Ezekiel 11-19-20

  726. echoes this promise,

  727. and I will give them

  728. one heart

  729. and a new spirit

  730. I will put within them.

  731. I will remove

  732. the heart of stone

  733. from their flesh

  734. and give them

  735. a heart of flesh

  736. that they may walk

  737. in my statutes

  738. and keep my rules

  739. and obey them

  740. and they shall be

  741. my people

  742. and I will be

  743. their God.

  744. How can it be

  745. that an idolatrous people

  746. will be the Lord's people

  747. and the holy God

  748. will be their God

  749. and Lord

  750. only if they can have

  751. a single heart,

  752. one heart,

  753. heart of flesh.

  754. This is what we read

  755. about in

  756. the assurance of pardon

  757. from Ezekiel 36,

  758. same promise.

  759. God says,

  760. I will sprinkle you

  761. with clean water

  762. and you shall be clean

  763. from all your uncleannesses

  764. and from all your idols

  765. I will cleanse you

  766. and I will give you

  767. a new heart

  768. and a new spirit

  769. I will put within you.

  770. He will remove

  771. the heart of stone

  772. and give us

  773. a heart of flesh.

  774. When is this promise

  775. fulfilled

  776. and how is this promise

  777. fulfilled?

  778. Has it already been

  779. fulfilled?

  780. Is it soon to be fulfilled?

  781. The author of Hebrews

  782. in Hebrews 10

  783. makes the case

  784. that this promise

  785. has already been fulfilled

  786. in the atoning sacrifice

  787. of Jesus Christ

  788. and in the subsequent gift

  789. of the Holy Spirit

  790. that Jesus sends

  791. after his death,

  792. resurrection,

  793. and ascension to heaven.

  794. He cites Jeremiah 21's promise

  795. that I just read

  796. a short while ago.

  797. He cites it in Hebrews 10

  798. of the new covenant

  799. and how God will write

  800. his law on our hearts

  801. and then he says

  802. that that promise

  803. is fulfilled by Jesus

  804. in verses 19-22

  805. of Hebrews 10.

  806. Therefore, brothers,

  807. since we have a confidence

  808. to enter the holy places

  809. by the blood of Jesus,

  810. by the new and living way

  811. that he opened for us

  812. through the curtain

  813. that is through his flesh,

  814. and since we have

  815. a great priest

  816. over the house of God,

  817. let us draw near

  818. with a true heart

  819. in full assurance of faith,

  820. with our hearts

  821. sprinkled clean

  822. from an evil conscience

  823. and our bodies

  824. washed with pure water.

  825. by offering himself

  826. as the once-for-all

  827. atoning sacrifice

  828. for our sins

  829. on the cross

  830. and dying

  831. in the stead of sinners

  832. and by shedding

  833. his own blood

  834. which cleanses us

  835. of all of our sins,

  836. he, Jesus,

  837. then enters

  838. into the holy of holies,

  839. the most holy place

  840. in the heavenly temple

  841. before God

  842. and there serves

  843. as our great high priest

  844. and our advocate

  845. and our intercessor

  846. so that we can

  847. be assured

  848. that our cleanses,

  849. that our conscience

  850. is cleansed,

  851. that our hearts

  852. are purified.

  853. I've often run

  854. into people,

  855. Christians,

  856. who persist

  857. in their thinking

  858. that

  859. and relate more

  860. to the description

  861. of Jeremiah 17,

  862. my heart is

  863. deceitful

  864. and desperately sick

  865. and then they forget

  866. the spiritual reality

  867. that they have received

  868. new hearts.

  869. I know I'm quoting

  870. a lot of scripture

  871. but I'm going to give you

  872. a few more

  873. because I want to

  874. demonstrate this

  875. conclusively

  876. not on my own authority

  877. but on the authority

  878. of scripture

  879. that this promise

  880. really has been

  881. fulfilled for

  882. every single

  883. believer

  884. in Christ.

  885. Acts 15, 9

  886. has God

  887. made no distinction

  888. between Jews

  889. and Gentiles

  890. having cleansed

  891. their hearts

  892. by faith?

  893. That's happened already.

  894. He has cleansed

  895. our hearts

  896. by faith.

  897. Purified

  898. through faith

  899. in Jesus Christ.

  900. Romans 6,

    Romans 6:17

  901. verse 17

  902. Thanks be to God

  903. that you who

  904. were once

  905. slaves of sin

  906. have become

  907. obedient from

  908. the heart

  909. to the standard

  910. of teaching

  911. to which you

  912. were committed.

  913. Here's the difference

  914. between the Pharisee

  915. and the Christian.

  916. Here's the difference

  917. between people

  918. of the law

  919. and the people

  920. of the gospel,

  921. the people

  922. of the spirit.

  923. We do not

  924. merely obey God

  925. outwardly

  926. but inwardly.

  927. We are not

  928. merely obedient

  929. out of fear

  930. with the external

  931. enforcement

  932. of God's law

  933. but we are

  934. obedient from

  935. the heart

  936. because we

  937. have a new

  938. heart.

  939. After all,

  940. didn't Jesus

  941. assure us

  942. in John 7,

  943. 38-39,

  944. whoever believes

  945. in me

  946. as the scripture

  947. has said,

  948. out of his

  949. heart

  950. will flow

  951. rivers of

  952. living water.

  953. Now this

  954. he said about

  955. the spirit

  956. whom those

  957. who believed

  958. in him

  959. were to receive.

  960. After Jesus'

  961. death,

  962. resurrection,

  963. and ascension,

  964. he sends

  965. the Holy Spirit

  966. to us

  967. into our hearts

  968. to make

  969. our hearts

  970. flow with

  971. rivers of

  972. living water.

  973. That has

  974. happened to

  975. us.

  976. 1 Peter 1,

  977. 22-25,

  978. having purified

  979. your souls

  980. by your

  981. obedience to

  982. the truth

  983. for a sincere

  984. brotherly love,

  985. love one another

  986. earnestly from

  987. a pure heart

  988. since you

  989. have been

  990. born again

  991. not of

  992. perishable

  993. seed but

  994. of imperishable

  995. through the

  996. living and

  997. abiding

  998. word of God

  999. and this

  1000. word is the

  1001. good news

  1002. that was

  1003. preached to

  1004. you.

  1005. How do

  1006. our souls

  1007. get purified?

  1008. How do we

  1009. get pure

  1010. hearts?

  1011. By our

  1012. obedience,

  1013. but it's not

  1014. what you think,

  1015. not our

  1016. obedience to

  1017. the law,

  1018. our obedience

  1019. to the truth.

  1020. And what is

  1021. this truth?

  1022. It says

  1023. the living

  1024. and abiding

  1025. word of God.

  1026. What is the

  1027. living and

  1028. abiding

  1029. word of God?

  1030. It tells us

  1031. the good news

  1032. that was preached

  1033. to you,

  1034. the gospel

  1035. of Jesus

  1036. Christ.

  1037. That Jesus

  1038. died as the

  1039. atoning

  1040. sacrifice for

  1041. our sins

  1042. on the

  1043. cross so

  1044. that sinners

  1045. with

  1046. adulterated

  1047. and defiled

  1048. and divided

  1049. hearts can be

  1050. clean and

  1051. can be pure,

  1052. can be

  1053. forgiven,

  1054. and be pure

  1055. in hearts so

  1056. they can enter

  1057. into the kingdom

  1058. of God and

  1059. stand up in the

  1060. presence of God

  1061. and see God

  1062. in his glory.

  1063. The gospel,

  1064. it's the gospel

  1065. that gives us

  1066. pure hearts.

  1067. So in John 15

  1068. 3, Jesus says

  1069. already you are

  1070. clean,

  1071. already you are

  1072. pure because of

  1073. the word that I

  1074. have spoken to

  1075. you.

  1076. You can think

  1077. of it this way.

  1078. I'll share two

  1079. and I'll just

  1080. explain why

  1081. then.

  1082. If I have a

  1083. new heart,

  1084. if I have a

  1085. new spirit,

  1086. why is there

  1087. still sin in

  1088. my life?

  1089. Why do I

  1090. still wrestle

  1091. and struggle

  1092. with my sinful

  1093. flesh?

  1094. You can think

  1095. of it this way.

  1096. When you

  1097. graft a

  1098. plant,

  1099. an unhealthy

  1100. plant that

  1101. is prone to

  1102. disease and

  1103. death,

  1104. and you

  1105. cut it off

  1106. and you

  1107. graft it

  1108. into a

  1109. more solid

  1110. rootstock,

  1111. a healthy

  1112. rootstock,

  1113. and when

  1114. you graft

  1115. the plant

  1116. in that

  1117. way,

  1118. it grows

  1119. healthy.

  1120. It doesn't

  1121. succumb,

  1122. it's not

  1123. susceptible

  1124. to the

  1125. same

  1126. diseases

  1127. that

  1128. plant

  1129. in its

  1130. native

  1131. form

  1132. is

  1133. when it's

  1134. grafted

  1135. into that

  1136. rootstock.

  1137. That's what

  1138. God has done

  1139. for us

  1140. in Jesus.

  1141. He takes

  1142. dead

  1143. branches

  1144. and he

  1145. grafts us

  1146. into the

  1147. healthy

  1148. rootstock

  1149. of the

  1150. vine of

  1151. Jesus

  1152. Christ.

  1153. He says

  1154. I am

  1155. the vine,

  1156. you are

  1157. the branches,

  1158. abide in

  1159. me and

  1160. then you

  1161. will bear

  1162. fruit.

  1163. already we

  1164. are new,

  1165. already we

  1166. have new

  1167. life,

  1168. already we

  1169. have a

  1170. new heart.

  1171. But just

  1172. as it

  1173. takes some

  1174. time for

  1175. that newly

  1176. grafted

  1177. plant to

  1178. start to

  1179. derive life

  1180. more and

  1181. more and

  1182. more and

  1183. more from

  1184. that source,

  1185. it takes

  1186. us some

  1187. time.

  1188. And that's

  1189. what our

  1190. present life

  1191. of sanctification

  1192. is.

  1193. we have

  1194. a couple

  1195. members,

  1196. one member

  1197. and one

  1198. baby in

  1199. the church

  1200. just recently

  1201. go through

  1202. heart surgery.

  1203. Jenny's

  1204. right here

  1205. with us

  1206. which we

  1207. praise God

  1208. for.

  1209. And we

  1210. experience

  1211. first hand

  1212. that even

  1213. when you

  1214. repair a

  1215. broken

  1216. heart,

  1217. the heart

  1218. doesn't

  1219. just

  1220. automatically

  1221. start,

  1222. the body

  1223. just doesn't

  1224. start automatically

  1225. functioning in

  1226. a perfectly

  1227. healthy way

  1228. along with

  1229. that fixed

  1230. new heart.

  1231. It takes

  1232. time for

  1233. the body

  1234. to get

  1235. adjusted.

  1236. When you

  1237. give someone

  1238. a heart

  1239. transplant

  1240. surgery,

  1241. they don't

  1242. just start

  1243. using that

  1244. heart right

  1245. away,

  1246. they're still

  1247. on a

  1248. ventilator

  1249. and they're

  1250. on various

  1251. catheters

  1252. because it

  1253. takes time

  1254. for the

  1255. body to

  1256. acclimate

  1257. to the

  1258. new heart

  1259. and for

  1260. the blood

  1261. to start

  1262. pumping

  1263. from that

  1264. new and

  1265. healthy

  1266. heart

  1267. into the

  1268. rest of

  1269. the body

  1270. to restore

  1271. life to

  1272. it.

  1273. It takes

  1274. time for

  1275. that to

  1276. happen.

  1277. Our

  1278. flesh in

  1279. this life

  1280. is still

  1281. accustomed

  1282. to the

  1283. old life.

  1284. It still

  1285. operates like

  1286. it has a

  1287. defective

  1288. heart sometimes

  1289. and it

  1290. takes time

  1291. for us

  1292. to be

  1293. weaned

  1294. off of

  1295. that.

  1296. But we

  1297. already have

  1298. a new

  1299. heart.

  1300. We already

  1301. have a

  1302. new spirit.

  1303. We are

  1304. already

  1305. holy.

  1306. That's why

  1307. we are

  1308. called

  1309. saints and

  1310. we are

  1311. being made

  1312. holy,

  1313. becoming

  1314. holy.

  1315. Sanctification,

  1316. you might even

  1317. say,

  1318. is becoming

  1319. what we

  1320. already are

  1321. in Christ.

  1322. This is

  1323. why purity

  1324. of heart

  1325. is not

  1326. a pipe

  1327. dream but

  1328. a reality

  1329. for us.

  1330. 1 Timothy

  1331. 1.5,

  1332. the aim of

  1333. our charge

  1334. is love

  1335. that issues

  1336. from a

  1337. pure heart.

  1338. 2 Timothy

  1339. 2.22,

  1340. so flee

  1341. youthful

  1342. passions and

  1343. pursue

  1344. righteousness,

  1345. faith,

  1346. love,

  1347. and peace

  1348. along with

  1349. those who

  1350. call on

  1351. the Lord

  1352. from a

  1353. pure heart.

  1354. this is

  1355. possible.

  1356. And how

  1357. do we

  1358. become more

  1359. and more

  1360. pure in

  1361. heart?

  1362. How do we

  1363. work out

  1364. the purity

  1365. of heart

  1366. that's

  1367. already

  1368. ours

  1369. in Jesus

  1370. Christ?

  1371. Not by

  1372. trying to

  1373. be pure

  1374. in our

  1375. own

  1376. strength.

  1377. Not by

  1378. beating

  1379. ourselves

  1380. up in

  1381. the flesh

  1382. and trying

  1383. to force

  1384. ourselves

  1385. to be

  1386. more

  1387. pure.

  1388. when we

  1389. live

  1390. under

  1391. the law,

  1392. it says

  1393. in 2 Corinthians

  1394. 3,

  1395. there's a

  1396. veil that

  1397. remains over

  1398. our faces.

  1399. We cannot

  1400. see God.

  1401. But when

  1402. we turn

  1403. to Jesus

  1404. with unveiled

  1405. faces,

  1406. we get to

  1407. behold the

  1408. glory of

  1409. God.

  1410. It says

  1411. in 2 Corinthians

  1412. 3.18,

  1413. and we all

  1414. with unveiled

  1415. faces beholding

  1416. the glory

  1417. of the Lord

  1418. are being

  1419. transformed

  1420. into the

  1421. same image

  1422. from one

  1423. degree of

  1424. glory to

  1425. another.

  1426. For this

  1427. comes from

  1428. the Lord

  1429. who is

  1430. the Spirit.

  1431. And then a

  1432. few verses

  1433. down,

  1434. 2 Corinthians

  1435. 4,

  1436. Paul says

  1437. that beholding

  1438. the glory

  1439. of the

  1440. Lord is,

  1441. once again,

  1442. seeing the

  1443. light of

  1444. the gospel

  1445. of the

  1446. glory of

  1447. Christ.

  1448. For God

  1449. who said

  1450. let light

  1451. shine out

  1452. of darkness

  1453. has shown

  1454. in our

  1455. hearts

  1456. to give

  1457. the light

  1458. of the

  1459. knowledge

  1460. of the

  1461. glory

  1462. of God

  1463. in the

  1464. face

  1465. of Jesus

  1466. Christ.

  1467. Again and

  1468. again,

  1469. the answer

  1470. from the

  1471. scriptures is

  1472. the same.

  1473. How do we

  1474. become pure

  1475. in heart?

  1476. By letting

  1477. the light

  1478. of the

  1479. gospel of

  1480. the glory

  1481. of Christ

  1482. shine in

  1483. our hearts.

  1484. By beholding

  1485. Jesus Christ,

  1486. by believing

  1487. in Jesus

  1488. Christ,

  1489. by abiding

  1490. in Jesus

  1491. Christ,

  1492. the Son of

  1493. God who

  1494. died for

  1495. our sins

  1496. to purify

  1497. our defiled

  1498. and divided

  1499. hearts,

  1500. to give us

  1501. new hearts

  1502. by the power

  1503. of the Holy

  1504. Spirit.

  1505. it's

  1506. when our

  1507. faith in

  1508. Jesus Christ

  1509. is worked

  1510. out in

  1511. our lives

  1512. that we

  1513. become people

  1514. with undivided

  1515. hearts who

  1516. will one

  1517. thing.

  1518. It's only

  1519. when we

  1520. see Jesus

  1521. in his

  1522. true glory

  1523. and in

  1524. his true

  1525. grace

  1526. and mercy

  1527. that our

  1528. hearts are

  1529. transformed and

  1530. our hearts

  1531. are captivated

  1532. by him

  1533. and we

  1534. will one

  1535. thing.

  1536. To please

  1537. him.

  1538. 19th century

  1539. English

  1540. pastor J.C.

  1541. Ryle puts it

  1542. in a much

  1543. better way

  1544. than I

  1545. can.

  1546. Zeal in

  1547. religion is

  1548. a burning

  1549. desire to

  1550. please God,

  1551. to do his

  1552. will,

  1553. and to

  1554. advance his

  1555. glory in

  1556. the world

  1557. in every

  1558. possible way.

  1559. It is a

  1560. desire which

  1561. no man feels

  1562. by nature,

  1563. which the

  1564. Spirit puts

  1565. into the

  1566. heart of

  1567. every believer

  1568. when he is

  1569. converted,

  1570. but which

  1571. some believers

  1572. feel so much

  1573. more strongly

  1574. than others

  1575. that they

  1576. alone deserve

  1577. to be called

  1578. zealous men.

  1579. This desire

  1580. is so strong

  1581. when it really

  1582. reigns in a

  1583. man that it

  1584. impels him to

  1585. make any

  1586. sacrifice,

  1587. to go through

  1588. any trouble,

  1589. to deny himself

  1590. to any amount,

  1591. to suffer,

  1592. to work,

  1593. to labor,

  1594. to toil,

  1595. to spend

  1596. himself and

  1597. be spent,

  1598. and even to

  1599. die if only

  1600. he can please

  1601. God and

  1602. honor Christ.

  1603. a zealous

  1604. man in

  1605. religion is

  1606. preeminently

  1607. a man of

  1608. one thing.

  1609. It is not

  1610. enough to

  1611. say that he

  1612. is earnest

  1613. and hardy,

  1614. uncompromising,

  1615. thoroughgoing,

  1616. wholehearted,

  1617. fervent in

  1618. spirit.

  1619. He only

  1620. sees one

  1621. thing.

  1622. He cares

  1623. for one

  1624. thing.

  1625. He lives

  1626. for one

  1627. thing.

  1628. He is

  1629. swallowed up

  1630. in one

  1631. thing,

  1632. and that

  1633. one thing

  1634. is to

  1635. please

  1636. God.

  1637. whether

  1638. he lives

  1639. or whether

  1640. he dies,

  1641. whether he

  1642. has health

  1643. or whether

  1644. he has

  1645. sickness,

  1646. whether he

  1647. is rich

  1648. or whether

  1649. he is

  1650. poor,

  1651. whether he

  1652. pleases

  1653. men or

  1654. whether he

  1655. gives offense,

  1656. whether he

  1657. is not

  1658. wise or

  1659. whether he

  1660. is not

  1661. foolish,

  1662. whether he

  1663. gets blame

  1664. or whether

  1665. he gets

  1666. praise,

  1667. whether he

  1668. gets honor

  1669. or whether

  1670. he gets

  1671. shame.

  1672. For all

  1673. this,

  1674. the zealous

  1675. man cares

  1676. nothing at

  1677. all.

  1678. he burns

  1679. for one

  1680. thing,

  1681. and that

  1682. one thing

  1683. is to

  1684. please

  1685. God

  1686. and to

  1687. advance

  1688. God's

  1689. glory.

  1690. If he

  1691. is consumed

  1692. in the

  1693. very burning,

  1694. he cares

  1695. not for

  1696. it.

  1697. He is

  1698. content.

  1699. He feels

  1700. that like a

  1701. lamp,

  1702. he is made

  1703. to burn,

  1704. and if

  1705. consumed

  1706. in burning,

  1707. he has

  1708. but done

  1709. the work

  1710. for which

  1711. God

  1712. appointed

  1713. him.

  1714. when you

  1715. see

  1716. Jesus

  1717. in his

  1718. glory,

  1719. that's

  1720. how you

  1721. burn,

  1722. and you

  1723. will

  1724. one

  1725. thing.

  1726. And the

  1727. person who

  1728. wills one

  1729. thing is

  1730. blessed

  1731. because God

  1732. is so

  1733. gracious

  1734. to give

  1735. him or

  1736. to give

  1737. her

  1738. the one

  1739. thing

  1740. that he

  1741. seeks,

  1742. to see

  1743. God.

  1744. Like all

  1745. the promises

  1746. in the

  1747. Beatitudes,

  1748. this promise

  1749. has both

  1750. present and

  1751. future

  1752. dimensions.

  1753. There is a

  1754. sense in

  1755. which we

  1756. as Christians

  1757. presently

  1758. see God

  1759. by faith.

  1760. Hebrews

  1761. 11,

  1762. 27

  1763. speaks of

  1764. how by

  1765. faith we

  1766. endure as

  1767. seeing him

  1768. who is

  1769. invisible.

  1770. By

  1771. beholding

  1772. the glory

  1773. of Jesus

  1774. in the

  1775. gospel

  1776. with unveiled

  1777. faces,

  1778. we are

  1779. in a

  1780. real

  1781. spiritual

  1782. way

  1783. seeing

  1784. God.

  1785. Isn't

  1786. that why

  1787. Jesus

  1788. said

  1789. during his

  1790. time on

  1791. earth in

  1792. John 14,

  1793. 9,

  1794. whoever

  1795. has seen

  1796. me has

  1797. seen

  1798. the

  1799. Father.

  1800. Jesus

  1801. is the

  1802. one who

  1803. makes

  1804. the Father

  1805. known.

  1806. And if

  1807. you have

  1808. seen

  1809. Jesus

  1810. and if

  1811. you

  1812. behold

  1813. the

  1814. light

  1815. of his

  1816. glory,

  1817. then you

  1818. have in

  1819. a real

  1820. spiritual

  1821. sense

  1822. seen

  1823. God

  1824. the

  1825. Father.

  1826. It's

  1827. only when

  1828. our hearts

  1829. are

  1830. enlightened,

  1831. it says

  1832. in Ephesians

  1833. 1,

  1834. 18,

  1835. that we

  1836. can truly

  1837. see God.

  1838. We can

  1839. have hope

  1840. and faith

  1841. in God.

  1842. So this

  1843. is a

  1844. present

  1845. reality

  1846. for all

  1847. those who

  1848. profess faith

  1849. in Jesus

  1850. now.

  1851. Yet there

  1852. is also

  1853. a sense

  1854. in which

  1855. we do

  1856. not yet

  1857. see God.

  1858. And it

  1859. shall be

  1860. fulfilled

  1861. in the

  1862. future.

  1863. That's

  1864. where it

  1865. says they

  1866. shall

  1867. see

  1868. God.

  1869. Because we

  1870. see him

  1871. in a real

  1872. way,

  1873. but we do

  1874. not yet see

  1875. him fully.

  1876. We do

  1877. not see

  1878. him face

  1879. to face.

  1880. In

  1881. Exodus

  1882. 33,

  1883. if you

  1884. remember,

  1885. Moses,

  1886. pleased with

  1887. God,

  1888. show me

  1889. your glory,

  1890. and God

  1891. amazingly,

  1892. he condescends

  1893. to grant

  1894. him that

  1895. request,

  1896. says,

  1897. yes,

  1898. I will

  1899. show you

  1900. my glory.

  1901. I will

  1902. make my

  1903. glory pass

  1904. before you.

  1905. But he

  1906. says,

  1907. you shall

  1908. not see

  1909. my face,

  1910. for no

  1911. man shall

  1912. see my

  1913. face and

  1914. live.

  1915. Instead,

  1916. you may

  1917. see my

  1918. back as

  1919. my glory

  1920. passes

  1921. by.

  1922. There's

  1923. this longing,

  1924. the cry

  1925. that we

  1926. see all

  1927. throughout

  1928. scripture of

  1929. sinners who

  1930. know that

  1931. their sin

  1932. hides the

  1933. face of

  1934. God from

  1935. us,

  1936. saying,

  1937. how long,

  1938. oh Lord,

  1939. how long

  1940. will you

  1941. hide your

  1942. face from

  1943. me?

  1944. Because we

  1945. cannot see

  1946. God face

  1947. to face.

  1948. even the

  1949. angels,

  1950. the

  1951. seraphim

  1952. in Isaiah

  1953. 6,

  1954. it says

  1955. they hide

  1956. their faces

  1957. before God

  1958. because they

  1959. are not

  1960. worthy to

  1961. behold him

  1962. in his

  1963. glory.

  1964. That's

  1965. why in

  1966. this life,

  1967. our vision

  1968. of God,

  1969. our seeing

  1970. God is

  1971. always mediated

  1972. by something

  1973. else.

  1974. It's always

  1975. indirect.

  1976. And we

  1977. long for

  1978. that direct

  1979. and immediate

  1980. vision of

  1981. God.

  1982. face to

  1983. face.

  1984. And we

  1985. are promised

  1986. that in

  1987. 1 Corinthians

  1988. 13,

  1989. 12,

  1990. for now

  1991. we see

  1992. in a

  1993. mirror

  1994. dimly,

  1995. like seeing

  1996. through like

  1997. a darkened

  1998. wine glass,

  1999. you see

  2000. something through

  2001. that,

  2002. you can still

  2003. see stuff,

  2004. but it's

  2005. darkly.

  2006. We see

  2007. in a mirror

  2008. dimly in

  2009. the present

  2010. age,

  2011. but then

  2012. in the

  2013. future,

  2014. face to

  2015. face,

  2016. now I

  2017. know in

  2018. part,

  2019. then I

  2020. shall know

  2021. fully even

  2022. as I have

  2023. been fully

  2024. known.

  2025. that's

  2026. the promise,

  2027. that's what

  2028. we get to

  2029. long for.

  2030. And there's

  2031. something about

  2032. this immediate

  2033. and direct

  2034. and personal

  2035. full access

  2036. and seeing

  2037. someone face

  2038. to face

  2039. that we

  2040. already know

  2041. and experience

  2042. in this

  2043. life.

  2044. Think about

  2045. why,

  2046. some of you

  2047. guys have done

  2048. this,

  2049. why so many

  2050. dedicated fans

  2051. of athletes,

  2052. artists,

  2053. actors,

  2054. spend hours

  2055. and sometimes

  2056. days in

  2057. line to

  2058. be at a

  2059. movie premiere

  2060. or a

  2061. concert venue

  2062. or a

  2063. sporting event.

  2064. Why do

  2065. they do

  2066. that?

  2067. They look

  2068. better on

  2069. TV than

  2070. in person.

  2071. You can

  2072. see them

  2073. and stare

  2074. at them

  2075. to your

  2076. heart's

  2077. content on

  2078. TV.

  2079. Why do

  2080. people do

  2081. that?

  2082. Because

  2083. there's

  2084. something

  2085. about an

  2086. unmediated

  2087. encounter

  2088. that offers

  2089. a sense

  2090. of personal

  2091. intimacy

  2092. and knowledge

  2093. and access

  2094. that's just

  2095. unmatched,

  2096. unparalleled

  2097. by a

  2098. mediated

  2099. view

  2100. of that

  2101. person.

  2102. So we

  2103. already have

  2104. this vision

  2105. but we

  2106. shall have

  2107. this vision

  2108. fully

  2109. 1 John 3

  2110. 2-3

  2111. says,

  2112. Beloved,

  2113. we are

  2114. God's

  2115. children

  2116. now

  2117. and what

  2118. we will

  2119. be

  2120. has not

  2121. yet

  2122. appeared

  2123. but we

  2124. know that

  2125. when he

  2126. appears,

  2127. when Jesus

  2128. returns,

  2129. we shall

  2130. be like

  2131. him

  2132. because we

  2133. shall see

  2134. him

  2135. as he

  2136. is.

  2137. This is the

  2138. vision of

  2139. God that

  2140. was promised

  2141. to us when

  2142. we were in

  2143. Revelation 22,

  2144. 3-5.

  2145. No longer

  2146. will there be

  2147. anything accursed

  2148. but the

  2149. throne of

  2150. God and

  2151. the Lamb

  2152. will be

  2153. in it

  2154. and his

  2155. servants

  2156. will worship

  2157. him.

  2158. They will

  2159. see his

  2160. face

  2161. and his

  2162. name will

  2163. be on their

  2164. foreheads

  2165. and night

  2166. will be

  2167. no more.

  2168. I think

  2169. of it like

  2170. back in the

  2171. day with

  2172. arranged marriages

  2173. wives used

  2174. to wear

  2175. veils.

  2176. I know that

  2177. people do it

  2178. again,

  2179. do it nowadays

  2180. too because

  2181. they think

  2182. it looks

  2183. good.

  2184. It does.

  2185. But back

  2186. in the day

  2187. it had served

  2188. a more

  2189. practical

  2190. function.

  2191. You wore

  2192. the veil

  2193. because the

  2194. husband should

  2195. not see

  2196. your face

  2197. especially in

  2198. an arranged

  2199. marriage until

  2200. you're right

  2201. about to get

  2202. married because

  2203. he might

  2204. back out

  2205. otherwise.

  2206. You wear

  2207. the veil

  2208. and you

  2209. wear the

  2210. veil.

  2211. But imagine

  2212. the wife is

  2213. beautiful.

  2214. Imagine

  2215. they're going

  2216. and she has

  2217. veiled faces.

  2218. She has

  2219. veil over her

  2220. head and

  2221. then finally

  2222. at the

  2223. altar as

  2224. you say

  2225. the vows

  2226. you unveil

  2227. and imagine

  2228. the ecstasy

  2229. of first

  2230. time

  2231. seeing your

  2232. bride or

  2233. seeing your

  2234. groom through

  2235. unveiled

  2236. faces.

  2237. All that

  2238. is good

  2239. and all that

  2240. is beautiful

  2241. and true

  2242. in this life

  2243. they are

  2244. they show us

  2245. something of

  2246. God.

  2247. We see

  2248. God in

  2249. some real

  2250. way in

  2251. a spiritual

  2252. way by

  2253. eyes of

  2254. faith but

  2255. it is

  2256. veiled.

  2257. We see

  2258. him through

  2259. the veil

  2260. but that

  2261. day we

  2262. shall see

  2263. face to

  2264. face the

  2265. one we

  2266. have longed

  2267. to see

  2268. our entire

  2269. life.

  2270. How many

  2271. times have

  2272. we hung

  2273. our heads

  2274. in defeat

  2275. in this

  2276. life?

  2277. Discouraged

  2278. by our own

  2279. sinfulness

  2280. and then

  2281. has he

  2282. graciously

  2283. lifted up

  2284. our heads

  2285. and pointed

  2286. our heads

  2287. up to

  2288. the cross

  2289. where he

  2290. made

  2291. satisfaction

  2292. for our

  2293. sins?

  2294. How many

  2295. times when

  2296. our shoulders

  2297. were slumped

  2298. with the

  2299. weight and

  2300. the burden

  2301. and the

  2302. worries of

  2303. our

  2304. responsibilities

  2305. in life

  2306. and he

  2307. has braced

  2308. us up

  2309. and strengthened

  2310. us and

  2311. spoken truth

  2312. into our

  2313. hearts?

  2314. How many

  2315. times has he

  2316. applied the

  2317. balm of

  2318. his grace

  2319. and mercy

  2320. to comfort

  2321. our wounded

  2322. soul?

  2323. how many

  2324. times has

  2325. he gently

  2326. taught us

  2327. when we

  2328. are going

  2329. astray

  2330. and corrected

  2331. our course

  2332. and led

  2333. us into

  2334. the path

  2335. of righteousness?

  2336. How many

  2337. times has

  2338. God defended

  2339. us from

  2340. the false

  2341. accusations

  2342. and slander

  2343. of the

  2344. enemy?

  2345. How many

  2346. times has

  2347. God graciously

  2348. provided for

  2349. all of our

  2350. needs

  2351. and fulfilled

  2352. our truest

  2353. and deepest

  2354. desires?

  2355. others,

  2356. when you

  2357. think of

  2358. Jesus

  2359. and all

  2360. that he

  2361. means to

  2362. you,

  2363. do you

  2364. not long?

  2365. Is this

  2366. not the

  2367. strongest

  2368. desire of

  2369. your heart

  2370. to see

  2371. him?

  2372. Charles

  2373. Spurgeon,

  2374. we own

  2375. to none

  2376. so much,

  2377. we talk

  2378. of none

  2379. so much,

  2380. we hope

  2381. and we

  2382. think of

  2383. none

  2384. so much,

  2385. at any

  2386. rate,

  2387. no one

  2388. so constantly

  2389. thinks of

  2390. us.

  2391. We have,

  2392. I believe,

  2393. all of us

  2394. who love

  2395. his name,

  2396. a most

  2397. insatiable

  2398. wish to

  2399. behold

  2400. his person,

  2401. the thing

  2402. for which

  2403. I would

  2404. pray above

  2405. all others

  2406. would be

  2407. forever to

  2408. behold

  2409. his face,

  2410. forever to

  2411. lay my

  2412. head upon

  2413. his breast,

  2414. forever to

  2415. know that

  2416. I am

  2417. his,

  2418. forever to

  2419. dwell with

  2420. him.

  2421. I,

  2422. one short

  2423. glimpse,

  2424. one transitory

  2425. vision of

  2426. his glory,

  2427. one brief

  2428. glance at

  2429. his marred,

  2430. but now

  2431. exalted and

  2432. beaming

  2433. countenance,

  2434. would repay

  2435. almost a

  2436. world of

  2437. trouble.

  2438. But we

  2439. are not

  2440. promised one

  2441. brief transitory

  2442. glance,

  2443. we are

  2444. promised an

  2445. eternal vision

  2446. of God.

  2447. Let me

  2448. close with

  2449. a couple

  2450. stanzas from

  2451. this hymn.

  2452. Oh, how

  2453. the thought

  2454. that I

  2455. shall know

  2456. Jesus who

  2457. suffered here

  2458. below,

  2459. to manifest

  2460. God's favor

  2461. for me and

  2462. for the saints

  2463. I love,

  2464. both here

  2465. and with

  2466. himself above,

  2467. doth my

  2468. renewed

  2469. nature move

  2470. and that

  2471. sweet word

  2472. forever.

  2473. Forever

  2474. to behold

  2475. him shine,

  2476. forevermore

  2477. to call

  2478. him mine

  2479. and see

  2480. him still

  2481. before me,

  2482. forever on

  2483. his face

  2484. to gaze

  2485. and meet

  2486. the full

  2487. assembled

  2488. rays.

  2489. heavenly

  2490. father,

  2491. I thank

  2492. you for

  2493. this promise

  2494. that we

  2495. shall see

  2496. you face

  2497. to face,

  2498. that we

  2499. shall see

  2500. our savior

  2501. Jesus face

  2502. to face.

  2503. Oh,

  2504. God,

  2505. we see

  2506. you but

  2507. in a

  2508. mirror dimly

  2509. now.

  2510. Oh,

  2511. but even

  2512. that sight

  2513. is entrancing

  2514. and glorious.

  2515. Lord,

  2516. we long

  2517. for that

  2518. day when

  2519. we will

  2520. see you

  2521. face

  2522. to face

  2523. in the

  2524. fullness

  2525. of your

  2526. glory.

  2527. So,

  2528. Lord,

  2529. thank you

  2530. for making

  2531. us pure

  2532. in heart

  2533. in Christ.

  2534. Continue

  2535. to sanctify

  2536. us and

  2537. purify

  2538. our hearts

  2539. that we

  2540. may see

  2541. more of

  2542. you even

  2543. in this

  2544. life.

  2545. In

  2546. Jesus' name

  2547. we pray.

  2548. Amen.

  2549. Amen.
