  1. All right, guys, we're going to be on outline two there.

  2. If you're tracking along in the handouts,

  3. going to war with conflict,

  4. I promised you in the last session we'd do a closer look at James 1-10,

  5. that section of James where he's really dealing with this.

  6. And so I'm going to make good on that promise in this session.

  7. I referenced in the interview before the seminar started

  8. that I worked for Family Life Ministries.

  9. It was part of Campus Crusade.

  10. It was at the time the most theologically conservative arm of Campus Crusade.

  11. And I left almost 20 years ago, so I can't speak to it knowledgeably now.

  12. But then it was very solidly reformed in its approach to the scriptures and to life.

  13. One of their flagship events that they do all around the world,

  14. about 300 times a year when I was there,

  15. is a conference called A Weekend to Remember.

  16. It's a marriage conference that's really designed to help cast a vision

  17. for what biblical marriage is,

  18. the purpose, the plan, and the power for marriage are three of the sessions there.

  19. But in the first session of the conference,

  20. somewhere in there,

  21. they start drawing attention to how we should view our spouse.

  22. This is not going to be a marriage session.

  23. It's just an opening illustration.

  24. And they're well known for this phrase,

  25. my spouse is not my enemy.

  26. And then they typically get the audience to repeat after them.

  27. My spouse is not my enemy.

  28. Turn to your spouse now and say that.

  29. You are not my...

  30. Like, they do this over and over again.

  31. And they're...

  32. Don't turn to one another.

  33. I don't want to make this weird.

  34. But they do that because they are trying to underscore

  35. what many people came in believing wrongly.

  36. Many people who come to this marriage conference

  37. are coming with their marriage on the rocks.

  38. They know their spouse is their enemy.

  39. That's why they brought them, to get fixed.

  40. Okay?

  41. And that's why a lot of people come to marriage counseling.

  42. They're convinced they're right.

  43. Let me just go and be a cheerleader

  44. as God works on my spouse.

  45. Like, over and over again, this is this thought.

  46. The person I'm in conflict with is my enemy.

  47. Is the assumption we can bring.

  48. And so Family Life, in their marriage conferences,

  49. Rob, in this seminar, is here to say

  50. the person that comes to mind when you're in conflict

  51. is not your enemy.

  52. Now, I don't know what kind of shape you showed up in here.

  53. If there's...

  54. I don't know any of you personally, really, at all.

  55. So if you have a lot of conflict in your life,

  56. if there's just one relationship,

  57. maybe you're just, you know, conflict-free,

  58. praise the Lord.

  59. Regardless,

  60. the person we're in conflict with is not our enemy.

  61. Now, that is not to say you don't have an enemy.

  62. The enemy that you do have

  63. likes to stay as invisible as possible.

  64. And he likes to whisper in your ear

  65. so that you fight against someone who's not your enemy

  66. so you do not fight properly the one who is.

  67. Part of relational counseling

  68. is taking people who are on opposite sides of a table

  69. looking at one another in fighting

  70. and figuratively, sometimes literally,

  71. putting them on the same side of the table

  72. fighting the enemy together.

  73. Okay?

  74. This is largely what's in view

  75. when we get to James 4.

  76. That we...

  77. James 4 is trying to address

  78. a people who have identified the wrong enemy.

  79. And James tries to get you to identify

  80. the right enemy.

  81. When there's conflict,

  82. we're supposed to, as Christians,

  83. go to war.

  84. But we're not supposed to go to war with each other.

  85. We're supposed to go to a war against the devil.

  86. It's just an error we so often make

  87. that we fight against the wrong thing.

  88. And what does that result in?

  89. It results in chronic fighting.

  90. Or,

  91. eventually, cold apathy.

  92. We can't fight anymore.

  93. We just can't.

  94. Neither of us has it in us.

  95. We clearly can't be at peace

  96. because you won't change.

  97. So we have to get to a place

  98. where we just don't act in love

  99. toward one another anymore.

  100. Married couples coexist.

  101. Friends drift off.

  102. Family members develop blacklists.

  103. You don't get invited to Thanksgiving

  104. or to this party or to that.

  105. You know, Christmas is just really awkward.

  106. Because of all of this apathy

  107. and unresolved conflict.

  108. Because we have fought the wrong enemy.

  109. What does the Bible say

  110. we're supposed to do

  111. when we go to war against the right enemy?

  112. Take a look at Ephesians 6.

  113. Put on the whole armor of God

  114. that you may be able to stand

  115. against the schemes of the devil.

  116. So right there,

  117. Paul acknowledges who the right enemy is.

  118. James gets to it eventually

  119. in James 4 when we look at that.

  120. For we do not wrestle

  121. against flesh and blood,

  122. but against rulers,

  123. against the authorities,

  124. against the cosmic powers

  125. over this present darkness,

  126. against the spiritual forces of evil

  127. in the heavenly places.

  128. Let me encourage you.

  129. Whatever relationship seems broken

  130. or in conflict,

  131. remind yourself of this.

  132. You do not wrestle

  133. against flesh and blood.

  134. Now in some places,

  135. that's the platform it plays out in.

  136. But that's not what's really happening.

  137. What's really happening

  138. is that we wrestle

  139. against rulers,

  140. authorities,

  141. cosmic powers,

  142. against spiritual forces of evil.

  143. One of the main devices

  144. Satan uses

  145. to diminish

  146. the Christian witness

  147. is to get Christians

  148. fighting with one another.

  149. If he can't get you

  150. to ruin your own life

  151. with personal sin,

  152. secret sin,

  153. those kinds of things,

  154. he tries to get you

  155. to turn on one another

  156. with sinful judgments,

  157. rash judgments,

  158. self-righteousness

  159. that causes you

  160. to think you're better

  161. than other people,

  162. to view people

  163. according to their worst attributes

  164. while you prefer

  165. to be graded

  166. by your best attributes.

  167. This imbalance,

  168. it allows us

  169. to turn against

  170. one another as enemies

  171. and then

  172. he can kind of stop.

  173. He just kind of steps back

  174. because our sinful nature

  175. will continue doing the job

  176. once he gets us

  177. fighting in the wrong direction.

  178. Now,

  179. before I get into

  180. some of these comments

  181. that James hits

  182. in chapter four,

  183. I want to give

  184. an important qualifier.

  185. I always hope

  186. this doesn't apply

  187. to people

  188. when I'm speaking to them,

  189. but I never assume,

  190. so I want to make sure

  191. I say it.

  192. There are sometimes

  193. those situations

  194. that happen to you

  195. where someone is

  196. really your enemy.

  197. Like,

  198. they are out

  199. to destroy you.

  200. That happens.

  201. There are also scenarios

  202. where

  203. a path forward

  204. really is trying

  205. to figure out

  206. how can I be safe?

  207. It's not just

  208. kind of the common

  209. relational conflict

  210. that we've had in view,

  211. but there really is

  212. an issue of safety

  213. at work.

  214. I don't want you

  215. to take away

  216. from this seminar.

  217. Let me go back

  218. to that unsafe scenario

  219. and apply these principles

  220. of grace and forgiveness.

  221. They apply,

  222. but I want to really

  223. plead with you

  224. to get counsel,

  225. get help,

  226. if needed,

  227. call the authorities.

  228. Let's get you safe

  229. before we start

  230. working on your heart.

  231. Does that make sense?

  232. Everybody with me

  233. on that?

  234. Okay.

  235. What I have in view

  236. with these,

  237. now again,

  238. I think even in the

  239. most extreme cases,

  240. these things apply,

  241. but what I have in view

  242. with more immediate

  243. application

  244. is that broad set

  245. of conflicts

  246. that happen

  247. in most people's lives,

  248. not more of these

  249. extreme examples.

  250. Okay, now,

  251. let's take a look

  252. at James 4.

  253. I want to read

  254. verses 1 through 10.

  255. Of course,

  256. I'm preaching off

  257. of a manuscript here

  258. and I've left

  259. my Bible in my bag.

  260. Can I have,

  261. can I?

  262. I'll find it.

  263. I kind of know

  264. where it is.

  265. Thank you.

  266. Never go into the pulpit

  267. without your Bible friends.

  268. It's a job hazard.

  269. All right.

  270. James 4.

  271. Here we go,

  272. 1 through 10.

  273. I'm just going to read it,

  274. follow along.

  275. What causes quarrels

  276. and what causes fights

  277. among you?

  278. Is it not this,

  279. that your passions

  280. are at war within you?

  281. You desire

  282. and do not have,

  283. so you murder.

  284. You covet

  285. and cannot obtain,

  286. so you fight

  287. and quarrel.

  288. You do not have

  289. because you do not ask.

  290. You ask

  291. and do not receive

  292. because you ask wrongly

  293. to spend it

  294. on your passions.

  295. You adulterous people,

  296. do you not know

  297. that friendship

  298. with the world

  299. is enmity

  300. with God?

  301. Therefore,

  302. whoever wishes

  303. to be a friend

  304. of the world

  305. makes himself

  306. an enemy of God.

  307. Or do you suppose

  308. it is to no purpose

  309. that the scripture says

  310. he yearns jealously

  311. over the spirit

  312. that he has made

  313. to dwell in us,

  314. but he gives

  315. more grace.

  316. Therefore,

  317. it says,

  318. God opposes

  319. the proud

  320. and gives grace

  321. to the humble.

  322. Submit yourselves,

  323. therefore,

  324. to God.

  325. Resist the devil

  326. and he will flee

  327. from you.

  328. Draw near to God

  329. and he will draw

  330. near to you.

  331. Cleanse your hands,

  332. you sinners,

  333. and purify your hearts,

  334. you double-minded.

  335. Be wretched

  336. and mourn

  337. and weep.

  338. Let your laughter

  339. be turned

  340. to mourning

  341. and your joy

  342. to gloom.

  343. Humble yourselves

  344. before the Lord

  345. and he will

  346. exalt you.

  347. So what James does,

  348. thank you.

  349. What James does here

  350. is he's highlighting

  351. three enemies

  352. that we're going to face

  353. in the course

  354. of these ten verses

  355. and I want to take a look

  356. at each one.

  357. I want to pause.

  358. Look at the verses

  359. he's using to address

  360. that enemy

  361. and how can we make sure

  362. that when we go to war

  363. in conflict,

  364. we're actually going

  365. to war with conflict

  366. and with the person

  367. who benefits most

  368. from conflict,

  369. which is the devil himself.

  370. He's the one

  371. who sets goals

  372. for division

  373. and disagreement

  374. in the body of Christ.

  375. The first enemy

  376. I want to look at here

  377. is ourselves.

  378. I won't read it again

  379. but it's verses

  380. one through three

  381. where he's talking

  382. about those desires.

  383. We covered it

  384. in the first session.

  385. I just read it

  386. when I read through

  387. that passage

  388. and this can be

  389. the hardest thing

  390. to recognize

  391. in conflict

  392. and I love

  393. that it's where

  394. James starts.

  395. It's hard

  396. because it's not

  397. comfortable.

  398. It's necessary

  399. though

  400. and therefore

  401. it's good for us

  402. to start

  403. with us.

  404. Going into conflict

  405. if you knew

  406. like in your

  407. front of mind

  408. knower

  409. you like actively

  410. knew

  411. you were

  412. the first enemy

  413. in conflict

  414. you probably

  415. would behave

  416. differently.

  417. You wouldn't

  418. raise your voice

  419. you wouldn't

  420. name call

  421. you wouldn't

  422. hold offense

  423. you'd probably

  424. begin with

  425. confession.

  426. Listen I'm

  427. really upset

  428. with what you

  429. just did

  430. and I know

  431. that's because

  432. of my

  433. wicked heart.

  434. I'm going

  435. to try

  436. to communicate

  437. through this

  438. wicked heart

  439. as best I

  440. can.

  441. I'm aware

  442. I'm the biggest

  443. problem in this

  444. right now.

  445. Like that just

  446. changes conflict.

  447. You can actually

  448. have a conversation

  449. unless that person

  450. really quickly

  451. agrees with you

  452. and says oh

  453. you are the

  454. biggest problem.

  455. Yes thank

  456. we finally

  457. agree.

  458. James highlights

  459. what we're

  460. loving what

  461. our passions

  462. are so I

  463. asked before I

  464. want to ask

  465. again what

  466. is it that you

  467. are desiring

  468. so much

  469. even if it's

  470. good or

  471. wrong that

  472. you should or

  473. shouldn't desire

  474. it that you're

  475. willing to fight

  476. for it.

  477. Now guys

  478. listen sometimes

  479. the things that

  480. come to mind

  481. are really

  482. obvious and

  483. clear.

  484. That we should

  485. not desire it.

  486. We're desiring

  487. something that's

  488. not good for us.

  489. Maybe it's an

  490. unhealthy or an

  491. unbiblical

  492. relationship in

  493. our lives.

  494. Maybe we're

  495. striving for

  496. control over a

  497. situation because

  498. we don't like how

  499. God is handling

  500. it.

  501. Maybe we're in a

  502. relationship that's

  503. making demands on

  504. our selfish heart

  505. and we just don't

  506. want to let go.

  507. of the things that

  508. we're selfish over.

  509. Or maybe it's

  510. something even more

  511. obvious from

  512. scripture so

  513. clearly wrong.

  514. We're trying to

  515. protect an

  516. extramarital affair

  517. or we're giving

  518. in to drug use

  519. or other sinful

  520. indulgences.

  521. We fight to keep

  522. them in obvious

  523. opposition to the

  524. will of God.

  525. It's no wonder

  526. we're in conflict.

  527. The people that

  528. you're in conflict

  529. with may be the

  530. ones most trying

  531. to save you,

  532. to rescue you.

  533. You know,

  534. Galatians 6,

  535. they're coming

  536. after the person

  537. trapped in sin.

  538. There's conflict

  539. there.

  540. There you're

  541. obviously enemy,

  542. number one.

  543. You're the one

  544. creating the

  545. problems.

  546. Okay?

  547. Very few people I

  548. think would argue

  549. with that so I'm not

  550. going to spend much

  551. more time on that.

  552. Let me move on.

  553. I want to focus on

  554. what happens when

  555. we're in conflict

  556. because we're loving

  557. good things.

  558. We're pursuing

  559. good things.

  560. Calvin summed it

  561. up when he said

  562. that the problem

  563. is not so much

  564. in that we desire

  565. the wrong things

  566. but that we desire

  567. the right things

  568. too much.

  569. This is that

  570. illustration of

  571. peace in my home

  572. with my kids

  573. that I was telling

  574. you about.

  575. It's totally

  576. appropriate for a

  577. parent to desire

  578. peace.

  579. But when you

  580. desire something

  581. good and you're

  582. willing to sin

  583. to get it,

  584. that's a problem.

  585. That's enemy

  586. number one

  587. showing up.

  588. Okay?

  589. I've highlighted

  590. two here.

  591. I could have

  592. picked any of

  593. a thousand,

  594. two thousand,

  595. or more good

  596. things we could

  597. desire.

  598. Let's use

  599. respect as an

  600. example.

  601. And this could

  602. be respect from

  603. a professor,

  604. from a friend,

  605. from a parent,

  606. from a sibling,

  607. from a child,

  608. a boss,

  609. or a co-worker.

  610. You desire to

  611. be respected.

  612. And that's good.

  613. Like, don't give

  614. that up.

  615. Being born again

  616. doesn't mean you

  617. become a doormat.

  618. It's right to

  619. desire and even

  620. work toward being

  621. respected.

  622. We don't want to

  623. belittle it.

  624. We don't want to

  625. dismiss it.

  626. But we don't want

  627. to worship being

  628. respected.

  629. respected.

  630. We don't want to

  631. make respect our

  632. first love.

  633. We don't want to

  634. have a pursuit of

  635. respect that causes

  636. us to forget we're

  637. disciples.

  638. Whatever scenario,

  639. and I just laid out

  640. about ten of them,

  641. whatever scenario it

  642. is, you're striving

  643. to be respected,

  644. or you're actively

  645. being disrespected.

  646. Let me say,

  647. as an image bearer,

  648. a child of God,

  649. that God calls

  650. those who bear

  651. his image to be

  652. respected.

  653. That's a good thing

  654. you're desiring.

  655. But are you loving

  656. it more than

  657. your Christian

  658. example in that

  659. context?

  660. I'm not telling

  661. you you do.

  662. I'm not making

  663. judgments.

  664. I'm just asking

  665. questions.

  666. Okay?

  667. We want to track

  668. the good thing of

  669. respect, our desire

  670. for it, such that

  671. we don't fight and

  672. quarrel over it.

  673. We don't allow it

  674. to wage war

  675. within us.

  676. Can you think of

  677. a time when you

  678. were sinned against

  679. by being disrespected,

  680. but your response

  681. was just as sinful?

  682. That's just a sign

  683. that enemy number one

  684. is on the scene.

  685. It doesn't condemn

  686. you to help.

  687. We're just holding

  688. a mirror up right

  689. here.

  690. It's important

  691. when we want

  692. something good

  693. that we don't

  694. allow the goodness

  695. of that

  696. to be some type

  697. of excuse

  698. for the sin

  699. we commit

  700. in wanting it.

  701. You with me on that?

  702. Let's look at

  703. another thing.

  704. Comfort.

  705. In an ultimate

  706. sense,

  707. God loves comfort.

  708. He's built us

  709. for it.

  710. He created

  711. a sinless context

  712. in Eden

  713. and then

  714. before He

  715. set mankind

  716. to work,

  717. which He does

  718. eventually,

  719. He gives everybody

  720. a day of rest.

  721. That's how it started.

  722. They were made

  723. on day six.

  724. They weren't

  725. immediately put

  726. into work.

  727. They were put

  728. into rest.

  729. They were put

  730. into comfort

  731. and then commanded

  732. by God

  733. later as a result

  734. of that being

  735. the example

  736. to build comfort

  737. and rest

  738. into the rhythm

  739. of their lives.

  740. And at the end

  741. when we come

  742. face to face

  743. with Christ

  744. and we hopefully

  745. all hear the well done

  746. good and faithful servant,

  747. what does He say?

  748. Come into my factory?

  749. Come into my work?

  750. No,

  751. enter into my rest.

  752. We're designed

  753. for it.

  754. But there are times

  755. we're called to work.

  756. We're not called

  757. to worship comfort.

  758. There are

  759. in God's rhythm

  760. of life

  761. six days for work,

  762. not six days

  763. for comfort

  764. and one day

  765. for work.

  766. There is a time

  767. ultimately

  768. when we enter

  769. into an eternal rest,

  770. but that time

  771. is not now.

  772. So we have to realize

  773. if God,

  774. even in a sinless context,

  775. it's six days

  776. of labor

  777. and one day

  778. of comfort,

  779. we have to realize

  780. that our desire

  781. for comfort

  782. each day

  783. is probably

  784. a bit out of proportion

  785. with what God

  786. has for us.

  787. Maybe comfort

  788. here is talking

  789. about relational comfort,

  790. freedom from work

  791. or physical comfort.

  792. You know,

  793. is there going to be

  794. air conditioning

  795. in heaven

  796. or is it even

  797. going to be necessary?

  798. Right?

  799. We love having

  800. air conditioning

  801. in where we live

  802. or heat.

  803. Maybe that'd be

  804. more appropriate

  805. looking outside right now.

  806. Heat.

  807. Heat is needed

  808. for comfort.

  809. That's a good thing

  810. to desire.

  811. But we can't desire

  812. relational,

  813. situational,

  814. or temporal

  815. comfort

  816. more than we desire

  817. the pleasure

  818. of the Lord,

  819. the fear

  820. of the Lord.

  821. Okay,

  822. this enemy number one,

  823. even when we ask,

  824. he says,

  825. he says,

  826. you don't have

  827. because you don't ask.

  828. Why would we not ask

  829. the God of the universe

  830. for help?

  831. Because in that situation

  832. we're living as though

  833. we're the God of the universe

  834. or we're living as though

  835. the God of the universe

  836. doesn't exist.

  837. We're functionally atheists

  838. in that relationship

  839. or functionally atheistic

  840. in that situation.

  841. But then he goes on

  842. to say

  843. that if

  844. you ask

  845. and do not

  846. get

  847. because you ask

  848. for the wrong reasons.

  849. Have you ever

  850. asked God

  851. to do something

  852. you know

  853. he can't do

  854. because you're asking

  855. him to sin.

  856. Lord,

  857. will you just

  858. just smite

  859. that kid

  860. just a little bit

  861. just smite him.

  862. Not too much

  863. but you know

  864. and the Lord said

  865. well

  866. I'm not answering

  867. that one.

  868. Right?

  869. You ask

  870. with the wrong motives.

  871. Maybe you're asking

  872. so that you can have

  873. your idol of comfort

  874. or your idol of respect

  875. or your idol of money

  876. or your idol of prestige.

  877. And he's like

  878. no, no, no, no, no.

  879. If I wanted you

  880. to have that stuff

  881. I already would have

  882. given it to you.

  883. I've kept it from you

  884. because it's not good

  885. for you now

  886. or you're not ready

  887. to bear up

  888. under the weight

  889. of that blessing.

  890. Okay?

  891. We ask

  892. with the wrong motives.

  893. So

  894. I've bumped

  895. all the way down here.

  896. What he's saying here

  897. is that

  898. the enemy of self

  899. shows up

  900. with what we bring

  901. to the table.

  902. we bring

  903. these desires

  904. these passions

  905. these sins

  906. and if we don't

  907. recognize

  908. that's the first enemy

  909. Paul calls himself

  910. the chief of sinners.

  911. If we don't recognize

  912. that about ourselves

  913. by the time

  914. we get there

  915. we prioritize

  916. that other person

  917. as the first enemy

  918. or that scenario

  919. as the first enemy

  920. and we have failed

  921. to address

  922. what we have

  923. the most control over

  924. which is our own thoughts

  925. and our own heart

  926. and taking it

  927. before our own Savior

  928. and letting him

  929. change us

  930. from the inside out.

  931. We've got the most

  932. influence in conflict

  933. over ourselves.

  934. So we start there

  935. James starts there

  936. with enemy number one.

  937. So let me ask you

  938. I've got a few questions

  939. down there for you.

  940. What do you desire

  941. so much

  942. you're willing

  943. to sin

  944. to get it?

  945. Be specific here

  946. on the second one.

  947. What good thing

  948. most threatens

  949. your peace

  950. and your faith?

  951. Are you actively

  952. keeping someone else

  953. on the witness stand

  954. when your own heart

  955. deserves to be there?

  956. I don't know

  957. the answers

  958. to those questions.

  959. I hope they serve you

  960. in sifting through this.

  961. Let's look at

  962. enemy number two.

  963. It's friendship

  964. with the world.

  965. It says

  966. beginning in verse four

  967. there

  968. do you not know

  969. that friendship

  970. with the world

  971. is enmity

  972. with God?

  973. Therefore

  974. whoever wishes

  975. to be a friend

  976. of the world

  977. makes himself

  978. an enemy of God.

  979. Or do you suppose

  980. it's to no purpose

  981. that the scripture

  982. says he yearns

  983. jealously

  984. over the spirit

  985. that he has made

  986. to dwell in us

  987. but he gives

  988. more grace.

  989. Therefore

  990. it says

  991. God opposes the proud

  992. and gives grace

  993. to the humble.

  994. It's important here

  995. to know

  996. what's not being said

  997. here

  998. before we glean

  999. what is being said.

  1000. It's not talking

  1001. primarily

  1002. about loving

  1003. the things

  1004. of the world.

  1005. Secular music

  1006. secular television

  1007. it's not talking

  1008. about those things.

  1009. There's probably

  1010. some implications

  1011. of that

  1012. but that's not

  1013. primarily

  1014. what he's talking

  1015. about.

  1016. What he's talking

  1017. about here

  1018. is

  1019. loving the way

  1020. the world

  1021. thinks

  1022. approaching life

  1023. the way the world

  1024. approaches life.

  1025. He's talking

  1026. about friendship

  1027. with the world

  1028. as an economy

  1029. not so much

  1030. with all these

  1031. individual examples.

  1032. That friendship

  1033. with the world

  1034. living according

  1035. to the world's

  1036. economy

  1037. quid pro quo

  1038. things like that

  1039. that kind of

  1040. approach

  1041. to living

  1042. is actually

  1043. enmity

  1044. with God.

  1045. God

  1046. sent

  1047. Jesus

  1048. to save

  1049. people

  1050. from that

  1051. economy

  1052. of thinking

  1053. from that

  1054. problem

  1055. of sin

  1056. not to save

  1057. us

  1058. and then

  1059. send us

  1060. into that

  1061. economy

  1062. of sin

  1063. to uphold

  1064. it.

  1065. Okay

  1066. so if you're

  1067. a friend

  1068. of the world

  1069. you're never

  1070. really going

  1071. to identify

  1072. enemy number

  1073. one.

  1074. There's

  1075. absolutely

  1076. no cause.

  1077. There's

  1078. very little

  1079. benefit

  1080. in the world's

  1081. economy

  1082. to call

  1083. yourself

  1084. the biggest

  1085. problem.

  1086. That's not

  1087. going to

  1088. help you

  1089. advance.

  1090. That's not

  1091. going to

  1092. help you

  1093. prove yourself

  1094. right.

  1095. That's not

  1096. going to

  1097. clear your

  1098. reputation

  1099. with the

  1100. eyes of

  1101. unbelievers.

  1102. None of

  1103. those things

  1104. work so

  1105. you're not

  1106. going to

  1107. pursue

  1108. enemy number

  1109. one.

  1110. Right here

  1111. at enemy

  1112. number two

  1113. if you're

  1114. loving the

  1115. world

  1116. you've

  1117. already

  1118. missed

  1119. the biggest

  1120. problem

  1121. to address.

  1122. Okay

  1123. blame

  1124. and responsibility

  1125. for hardship

  1126. and conflict

  1127. they're always

  1128. ascribed to

  1129. others.

  1130. I don't

  1131. presume any

  1132. of you

  1133. are these

  1134. people but

  1135. do you

  1136. know people

  1137. like that

  1138. that they

  1139. seem to

  1140. constantly be

  1141. in crisis

  1142. but it's

  1143. never their

  1144. fault?

  1145. That's just

  1146. the way the

  1147. world thinks.

  1148. One of the

  1149. things Jesus

  1150. prayed for

  1151. his church

  1152. in John

  1153. 17 was

  1154. that we

  1155. would be

  1156. in the

  1157. world

  1158. but

  1159. not of

  1160. it.

  1161. Well that's

  1162. what James

  1163. is mirroring

  1164. here.

  1165. we're

  1166. supposed to

  1167. love the

  1168. world

  1169. but not

  1170. be friends

  1171. with the

  1172. world.

  1173. And before

  1174. I hear the

  1175. haunting voice

  1176. of my friend

  1177. Jim Donahue

  1178. here,

  1179. our church's

  1180. evangelist,

  1181. that doesn't

  1182. mean we're not

  1183. supposed to be

  1184. friends with

  1185. people in the

  1186. world.

  1187. It's not that.

  1188. We're not

  1189. supposed to be

  1190. friends with

  1191. that way of

  1192. thinking,

  1193. with that

  1194. approach to

  1195. living.

  1196. So we ask

  1197. ourselves,

  1198. realizing we're

  1199. supposed to be

  1200. in the world

  1201. and not of

  1202. it,

  1203. and that

  1204. we're not

  1205. supposed to

  1206. have friendship

  1207. with the

  1208. world.

  1209. Here's a

  1210. question.

  1211. What shaping

  1212. influences most

  1213. form your

  1214. perspective of

  1215. the world?

  1216. And that

  1217. may be a

  1218. question you

  1219. have to ask

  1220. some friends

  1221. about yourself

  1222. because it

  1223. may be hard

  1224. to see this

  1225. in yourself.

  1226. What forms

  1227. my worldview?

  1228. Let me give

  1229. you a couple

  1230. common examples.

  1231. Okay?

  1232. The home I

  1233. grew up in.

  1234. That's not a

  1235. bad thing

  1236. necessarily.

  1237. It might

  1238. be.

  1239. But the

  1240. home you

  1241. grew up

  1242. in surely

  1243. has had

  1244. some shaping

  1245. influence on

  1246. how you

  1247. view the

  1248. world.

  1249. Your parents'

  1250. values,

  1251. what was

  1252. valued in

  1253. your home,

  1254. what was

  1255. valued in

  1256. if you're

  1257. a Christian

  1258. when you

  1259. were a

  1260. kid,

  1261. what was

  1262. valued in

  1263. that church.

  1264. That has

  1265. shaped your

  1266. world either

  1267. by it's

  1268. made its

  1269. imprint upon

  1270. me,

  1271. or I'm

  1272. living my

  1273. life to

  1274. never do

  1275. those things.

  1276. Either has a

  1277. shaping influence.

  1278. Another could

  1279. be aspirations,

  1280. whether they're

  1281. career or

  1282. educational or

  1283. bucket list.

  1284. You know,

  1285. aspirations in

  1286. life can

  1287. often shape

  1288. what we

  1289. value.

  1290. Prior hurts.

  1291. Whether it's

  1292. parental or

  1293. from some

  1294. other authority

  1295. or peer

  1296. hurts.

  1297. It may not

  1298. be anything

  1299. intensely

  1300. relational like

  1301. that.

  1302. It may be a

  1303. number of

  1304. career or

  1305. academic

  1306. failures.

  1307. There's three

  1308. different jobs

  1309. here I've

  1310. totally failed

  1311. at.

  1312. Now you've

  1313. got a

  1314. worldview

  1315. that's

  1316. being shaped.

  1317. Of course,

  1318. scripture should

  1319. be in there

  1320. too,

  1321. right?

  1322. Scripture

  1323. should be

  1324. the thing

  1325. that most

  1326. forms our

  1327. worldview,

  1328. our perspective

  1329. of the world.

  1330. But let me

  1331. just ask you,

  1332. not out loud,

  1333. but in the

  1334. reflections of

  1335. your own

  1336. heart,

  1337. what have

  1338. been the

  1339. most shaping

  1340. influence in

  1341. your life,

  1342. and have

  1343. they helped

  1344. you shape

  1345. a biblical

  1346. worldview?

  1347. If you

  1348. surround

  1349. yourselves

  1350. with people

  1351. who all

  1352. have that

  1353. worldview,

  1354. you're going

  1355. to think like

  1356. the people that

  1357. surround you.

  1358. So if you're

  1359. surrounded by

  1360. people who

  1361. all have

  1362. this dysfunctional

  1363. worldview,

  1364. but everybody

  1365. kind of shares

  1366. it in common,

  1367. you'll go

  1368. years and

  1369. years and

  1370. years believing

  1371. you're right,

  1372. all the time

  1373. being wrong.

  1374. It's one of

  1375. the benefits

  1376. that's built

  1377. into the

  1378. command to

  1379. not forsake

  1380. the assembling

  1381. of ourselves.

  1382. Built into

  1383. that command

  1384. to have

  1385. fellowship

  1386. with one

  1387. another,

  1388. to encourage,

  1389. correct,

  1390. edify,

  1391. love one

  1392. another,

  1393. is that we

  1394. are shaped

  1395. by a common

  1396. worldview that's

  1397. in keeping

  1398. with the will

  1399. of God.

  1400. So being

  1401. shaped by our

  1402. community,

  1403. again,

  1404. is not a

  1405. problem.

  1406. The type

  1407. of community

  1408. you're shaped

  1409. by may be

  1410. the problem,

  1411. but that's

  1412. part of our

  1413. design.

  1414. That's why

  1415. God calls us

  1416. to be part

  1417. of a body

  1418. of Christ

  1419. locally,

  1420. tangibly,

  1421. so we can

  1422. build the

  1423. biblical

  1424. worldview

  1425. together.

  1426. Christians,

  1427. by the very

  1428. nature of

  1429. being pilgrims,

  1430. citizens of

  1431. another kingdom,

  1432. we are

  1433. strangers.

  1434. We are

  1435. called to

  1436. be different

  1437. from this

  1438. world.

  1439. We've been

  1440. given something

  1441. the world

  1442. doesn't have.

  1443. we have

  1444. the spirit

  1445. of the

  1446. living God

  1447. living within

  1448. us.

  1449. So when

  1450. we're talking

  1451. about conflict,

  1452. back to the

  1453. topic you came

  1454. to hear about,

  1455. when we're

  1456. talking about

  1457. conflict,

  1458. we've got to

  1459. realize what

  1460. often informs

  1461. our conflict

  1462. is our

  1463. friendship with

  1464. the world.

  1465. We think

  1466. like the world

  1467. thinks,

  1468. we do like

  1469. the world

  1470. does.

  1471. We may do

  1472. it with fewer

  1473. curse words,

  1474. so we feel

  1475. like we're

  1476. doing well.

  1477. But sin

  1478. that's more

  1479. polished is

  1480. just shinier,

  1481. it's not

  1482. holier.

  1483. Sinning in

  1484. a Christian

  1485. way is an

  1486. oxymoron.

  1487. Are you

  1488. with me on

  1489. that?

  1490. We can't

  1491. engage like

  1492. the world

  1493. engages.

  1494. We're called

  1495. to be

  1496. different.

  1497. We're

  1498. empowered

  1499. to be

  1500. different.

  1501. We are

  1502. designed

  1503. to be

  1504. different.

  1505. Malachi 4,

  1506. 5-6

  1507. says,

  1508. Behold,

  1509. I will

  1510. send you

  1511. Elijah the

  1512. prophet before

  1513. the great

  1514. and awesome

  1515. day of the

  1516. Lord comes.

  1517. And listen

  1518. to this.

  1519. And he

  1520. will turn

  1521. the hearts

  1522. of fathers

  1523. to their

  1524. children and

  1525. the hearts

  1526. of children

  1527. to their

  1528. fathers,

  1529. lest I

  1530. come to

  1531. strike the

  1532. land with

  1533. a decree

  1534. of utter

  1535. destruction.

  1536. What's

  1537. happening

  1538. with the

  1539. coming of

  1540. Elijah is

  1541. that this

  1542. place where

  1543. there's often

  1544. enmity,

  1545. this father-son

  1546. relationship,

  1547. this parent-child

  1548. relationship,

  1549. there's going

  1550. to be peace.

  1551. Hearts get

  1552. turned toward

  1553. one another.

  1554. We saw

  1555. it in

  1556. Ephesians 2.

  1557. When Christ

  1558. is central,

  1559. the wall

  1560. gets divided.

  1561. That is

  1562. otherworldly.

  1563. That's not

  1564. friendship

  1565. with this

  1566. world.

  1567. So let me

  1568. ask you

  1569. these questions.

  1570. How is

  1571. the world

  1572. defining

  1573. your

  1574. expectations

  1575. for your

  1576. relationships?

  1577. relationships?

  1578. Let me

  1579. ask that

  1580. differently.

  1581. Are you

  1582. willing to

  1583. take people

  1584. as they

  1585. are without

  1586. making

  1587. worldly

  1588. demands on

  1589. what they

  1590. should be

  1591. for you?

  1592. second,

  1593. do you

  1594. speak poorly

  1595. about those

  1596. who disagree

  1597. with you?

  1598. Like surely

  1599. there's a group

  1600. of friends

  1601. or family

  1602. that if you're

  1603. in a conflict

  1604. that this

  1605. thing may

  1606. come up.

  1607. When you

  1608. speak about

  1609. that person,

  1610. are you

  1611. carrying

  1612. Christian

  1613. ethics,

  1614. which is that

  1615. last call from

  1616. the last

  1617. session,

  1618. or are you

  1619. speaking about

  1620. them the way

  1621. the world

  1622. speaks about

  1623. people they

  1624. disagree with?

  1625. Here's a more

  1626. passive one that

  1627. we've got to be

  1628. careful of.

  1629. Do you tolerate

  1630. it when your

  1631. peers talk

  1632. poorly about

  1633. others?

  1634. Are you a

  1635. listening ear for

  1636. people sinning

  1637. about the people

  1638. they're in

  1639. conflict with?

  1640. Or do you

  1641. speak up for

  1642. Christian ethics?

  1643. Sorry, I keep

  1644. air popping into

  1645. that microphone.

  1646. Or do you

  1647. speak up for

  1648. Christian ethics?

  1649. These things are

  1650. friendship with

  1651. the world.

  1652. And when we're

  1653. there, we've

  1654. got to realize

  1655. it's not just,

  1656. oh yeah, there's

  1657. still worldliness

  1658. about me.

  1659. James puts it

  1660. in enmity

  1661. with God.

  1662. Now the

  1663. antidote, the

  1664. opposite of

  1665. friendship with

  1666. the world is

  1667. humility.

  1668. He said,

  1669. God opposes

  1670. the proud, but

  1671. gives grace to

  1672. the humble.

  1673. And so in

  1674. response to

  1675. our temptation

  1676. to be friends

  1677. with the world,

  1678. we need

  1679. humility to

  1680. realize God

  1681. knows better

  1682. than we do.

  1683. God's economy

  1684. is better than

  1685. the world's

  1686. economy.

  1687. That's the one

  1688. we're called to

  1689. live according

  1690. to.

  1691. So it leads

  1692. to this

  1693. question, do

  1694. we really

  1695. want the

  1696. power of the

  1697. gospel unleashed

  1698. in our lives?

  1699. If we do,

  1700. we'll pursue a

  1701. path of

  1702. humility.

  1703. We will

  1704. pursue a

  1705. path of

  1706. faithfulness.

  1707. We will

  1708. pursue a path

  1709. of friendship

  1710. with Christ,

  1711. abiding in

  1712. Christ, so

  1713. that the

  1714. fruit that

  1715. comes out of

  1716. us can flow

  1717. from the

  1718. vine, from

  1719. Christ himself.

  1720. The fruit of

  1721. the spirit that

  1722. we see in

  1723. Galatians 5 can

  1724. manifest in

  1725. our lives.

  1726. Friendship with

  1727. the world will

  1728. never manifest

  1729. love, joy,

  1730. peace, patience,

  1731. kindness, goodness,

  1732. faithfulness,

  1733. gentleness, and

  1734. self-control.

  1735. They won't.

  1736. Our abiding in

  1737. Christ generates

  1738. that.

  1739. And James

  1740. highlights this

  1741. for us when

  1742. he highlights

  1743. the dangers of

  1744. being a

  1745. friendship with

  1746. the world.

  1747. And then

  1748. enemy number

  1749. three.

  1750. You might

  1751. think it's the

  1752. devil.

  1753. He gets

  1754. mentioned in

  1755. this thing.

  1756. But I think

  1757. it's actually

  1758. something broader

  1759. than that.

  1760. In number

  1761. three here,

  1762. verses 7 to

  1763. 10, James

  1764. is highlighting

  1765. the danger of

  1766. distance from

  1767. God.

  1768. Take a look at

  1769. what it says and

  1770. then I'll break

  1771. it down a little

  1772. bit.

  1773. Submit yourselves

  1774. therefore to

  1775. God.

  1776. Resist the

  1777. devil and he

  1778. will flee from

  1779. you.

  1780. Draw near to

  1781. God and he

  1782. will draw near

  1783. to you.

  1784. Cleanse your

  1785. hands, you

  1786. sinners.

  1787. Purify your

  1788. hearts, you

  1789. double-minded.

  1790. Be wretched

  1791. and mourn and

  1792. weep.

  1793. Let your

  1794. laughter be

  1795. turned to

  1796. mourning and

  1797. your joy to

  1798. gloom.

  1799. Humble

  1800. yourselves

  1801. before the

  1802. Lord and he

  1803. will exalt

  1804. you.

  1805. So just as we

  1806. look at that

  1807. verse, let me

  1808. make the case

  1809. that it's

  1810. broader than

  1811. just the

  1812. devil.

  1813. The devil

  1814. only gets

  1815. one sentence

  1816. in that, not

  1817. even a whole

  1818. verse.

  1819. He shares

  1820. verse 7 with

  1821. submit yourselves

  1822. therefore to

  1823. God.

  1824. So the devil's

  1825. a real enemy.

  1826. We talked

  1827. about that in

  1828. the last

  1829. session, right?

  1830. He's a real

  1831. enemy.

  1832. That was the

  1833. intro to this

  1834. session.

  1835. We talked

  1836. about it.

  1837. But his

  1838. commands are

  1839. resist the

  1840. devil, but

  1841. before that

  1842. submit yourselves

  1843. to God.

  1844. And after

  1845. that draw

  1846. near to God.

  1847. you know,

  1848. sometimes when

  1849. I'm talking

  1850. to my

  1851. kids, they're

  1852. all very

  1853. respectful of

  1854. me, but

  1855. sometimes they

  1856. can't help

  1857. themselves.

  1858. And I'll

  1859. get a

  1860. random, not

  1861. a frequent,

  1862. Lord willing,

  1863. but a random

  1864. eye roll.

  1865. And I'll

  1866. just pause.

  1867. I'll be

  1868. like, please

  1869. don't roll

  1870. your eyes

  1871. at me.

  1872. And what

  1873. do I hear

  1874. every time?

  1875. What do I

  1876. hear?

  1877. I wasn't

  1878. rolling my

  1879. eyes.

  1880. All right.

  1881. Then I

  1882. got to take

  1883. an excursus.

  1884. And I've

  1885. got to say,

  1886. okay, if you

  1887. were not

  1888. rolling your

  1889. eyes, why

  1890. would I tell

  1891. you to stop

  1892. rolling your

  1893. eyes?

  1894. Like, that's

  1895. what's happening

  1896. here.

  1897. Why would

  1898. you tell

  1899. people to

  1900. draw near to

  1901. God if they

  1902. were already

  1903. near to God?

  1904. Why would

  1905. you tell

  1906. people to

  1907. submit

  1908. themselves to

  1909. God if

  1910. they were

  1911. already submitting

  1912. themselves to

  1913. God?

  1914. The command

  1915. comes to

  1916. address a

  1917. problem.

  1918. The problem

  1919. is distance

  1920. from God.

  1921. Now, I

  1922. don't mean

  1923. like eternal

  1924. distance from

  1925. God.

  1926. I'm not

  1927. talking about

  1928. that.

  1929. But if we

  1930. are not

  1931. walking

  1932. closely with

  1933. God,

  1934. that in

  1935. and of

  1936. itself is

  1937. an enemy

  1938. to our

  1939. lives.

  1940. We're not

  1941. going to

  1942. care as

  1943. much about

  1944. the

  1945. affections

  1946. of the

  1947. Lord if

  1948. we are

  1949. not

  1950. stirring

  1951. our

  1952. affections

  1953. for the

  1954. Lord.

  1955. We're not

  1956. going to

  1957. care about

  1958. what matters

  1959. to God

  1960. if,

  1961. functionally

  1962. speaking,

  1963. he is

  1964. not

  1965. mattering

  1966. to us.

  1967. And so

  1968. part of

  1969. this fight,

  1970. this war

  1971. against

  1972. conflict,

  1973. is we've

  1974. got to

  1975. eliminate

  1976. the

  1977. functional

  1978. distance we've

  1979. allowed to

  1980. creep into

  1981. our

  1982. relationship

  1983. with the

  1984. Lord,

  1985. to whatever

  1986. degree it

  1987. exists.

  1988. Again,

  1989. you may

  1990. just be the

  1991. most faithful

  1992. person in

  1993. the state of

  1994. Massachusetts

  1995. walking with

  1996. Jesus.

  1997. Praise God.

  1998. I'm not

  1999. trying to

  2000. correct

  2001. everybody.

  2002. I'm just

  2003. holding out

  2004. for us.

  2005. If you find

  2006. conflict or

  2007. enmity or

  2008. bitterness or

  2009. anger is

  2010. growing in

  2011. your life,

  2012. this is a

  2013. place to

  2014. look.

  2015. How is

  2016. your walk

  2017. with the

  2018. Lord going?

  2019. Because he

  2020. gives us

  2021. power.

  2022. He gives

  2023. more grace.

  2024. He says

  2025. if we

  2026. humble

  2027. ourselves,

  2028. he will

  2029. exalt us.

  2030. He'll lift

  2031. us up.

  2032. We don't

  2033. have to

  2034. defend

  2035. ourselves.

  2036. He'll

  2037. lift us

  2038. up.

  2039. When our

  2040. rights are

  2041. challenged,

  2042. when our

  2043. independence

  2044. is at

  2045. risk,

  2046. when our

  2047. comfort is

  2048. in danger,

  2049. when respect

  2050. is lacking,

  2051. we instinctively

  2052. think the

  2053. answer is to

  2054. fight.

  2055. But when

  2056. our desires

  2057. are not

  2058. getting what

  2059. they want,

  2060. the Christian

  2061. doesn't murder.

  2062. The Christian

  2063. doesn't fight.

  2064. The Christian

  2065. doesn't contend.

  2066. The Christian

  2067. humbles himself.

  2068. And guys,

  2069. this is hard.

  2070. It's hard.

  2071. Like, you may

  2072. be thinking,

  2073. has this guy

  2074. ever been

  2075. wronged?

  2076. Has he ever?

  2077. I'm not telling

  2078. you what Rob

  2079. would do.

  2080. I'm just holding

  2081. out the word of

  2082. God to you.

  2083. I'm just telling

  2084. you what it

  2085. says.

  2086. I mean, in the

  2087. most respectful

  2088. way, you know,

  2089. deal with it.

  2090. It's what the

  2091. Bible says,

  2092. right?

  2093. We've got to

  2094. say, okay,

  2095. if that's the

  2096. call on us,

  2097. and I'm saying

  2098. it's too hard,

  2099. never mind,

  2100. I'm not going

  2101. to do it,

  2102. there's a

  2103. choice there

  2104. to say,

  2105. I see what

  2106. the Bible

  2107. clearly says,

  2108. I'm not going

  2109. to pursue it.

  2110. It's too hard.

  2111. We want to

  2112. go after

  2113. these enemies.

  2114. We want to

  2115. go after

  2116. the enemy

  2117. of self.

  2118. We want to

  2119. go after

  2120. the enemy

  2121. of friendship

  2122. with the

  2123. world.

  2124. We want to

  2125. go after

  2126. the enemy

  2127. of distance

  2128. from God.

  2129. Now, here's

  2130. the great

  2131. news.

  2132. This is not

  2133. all up to

  2134. us.

  2135. It says,

  2136. draw near

  2137. to God,

  2138. and what

  2139. does it

  2140. say next?

  2141. He will

  2142. draw near

  2143. to you.

  2144. Our grasp

  2145. on Christ

  2146. does not

  2147. determine

  2148. our

  2149. stability

  2150. and safety.

  2151. It's

  2152. his grasp

  2153. on us.

  2154. Yes,

  2155. we are

  2156. called

  2157. to press

  2158. toward

  2159. Christ.

  2160. We are

  2161. called

  2162. to pray.

  2163. We are

  2164. called

  2165. to obey.

  2166. We are

  2167. called

  2168. to be

  2169. faithful,

  2170. but

  2171. ultimately,

  2172. our

  2173. ultimate

  2174. hope

  2175. is not

  2176. that we

  2177. maintain

  2178. our

  2179. faithfulness,

  2180. but that

  2181. he

  2182. maintains

  2183. his.

  2184. It's

  2185. important

  2186. as you

  2187. see these

  2188. enemies,

  2189. and as

  2190. you see

  2191. James,

  2192. who

  2193. has

  2194. just a

  2195. ton of

  2196. commands

  2197. in

  2198. James,

  2199. you could

  2200. be tempted

  2201. to read

  2202. that book

  2203. like just

  2204. a five

  2205. chapter

  2206. to-do

  2207. list.

  2208. In one

  2209. sense,

  2210. it is.

  2211. It does

  2212. call us

  2213. to the

  2214. things we're

  2215. supposed to

  2216. be doing

  2217. as Christians,

  2218. but we've

  2219. got to

  2220. remember,

  2221. James is

  2222. in the

  2223. context of

  2224. the

  2225. redemptive

  2226. story,

  2227. that when

  2228. we could

  2229. do

  2230. nothing

  2231. to save,

  2232. God

  2233. saved.

  2234. And I

  2235. said in

  2236. the last

  2237. session,

  2238. effort,

  2239. study,

  2240. those

  2241. things

  2242. cannot

  2243. deliver

  2244. us

  2245. in

  2246. and

  2247. of

  2248. themselves,

  2249. but only

  2250. when they

  2251. are done

  2252. in

  2253. Christ,

  2254. with

  2255. Christ

  2256. central,

  2257. in the

  2258. power of

  2259. Christ,

  2260. and in

  2261. the

  2262. power of

  2263. his

  2264. example.

  2265. I'm

  2266. going to

  2267. take this

  2268. practical

  2269. example that

  2270. I have

  2271. here in

  2272. Romans 9

  2273. to 21.

  2274. I painted

  2275. it, I

  2276. think,

  2277. sufficiently

  2278. earlier.

  2279. I'm

  2280. going to

  2281. just

  2282. respect our

  2283. time here.

  2284. Let me

  2285. just highlight

  2286. some things

  2287. from

  2288. Romans

  2289. 12,

  2290. 9 to

  2291. 21,

  2292. that I

  2293. didn't say

  2294. last time.

  2295. Let me

  2296. say one

  2297. thing about

  2298. it first.

  2299. I may

  2300. end up

  2301. saying the

  2302. whole thing

  2303. I was

  2304. planning to

  2305. say anyway.

  2306. I really

  2307. want to

  2308. commend to

  2309. you guys,

  2310. in the

  2311. next day,

  2312. maybe before

  2313. church,

  2314. even tomorrow,

  2315. just sit

  2316. down and

  2317. read Romans

  2318. 12,

  2319. all the

  2320. way,

  2321. 1 to

  2322. 21,

  2323. read it

  2324. all.

  2325. And when

  2326. you get

  2327. to Romans

  2328. 9,

  2329. sorry,

  2330. 12,

  2331. 9,

  2332. and it

  2333. has all

  2334. of its

  2335. directions

  2336. for

  2337. relationships,

  2338. slow down.

  2339. Let names

  2340. and faces

  2341. come into

  2342. mind with

  2343. each of

  2344. those

  2345. things.

  2346. Outdo

  2347. one another

  2348. in showing

  2349. honor.

  2350. Fear

  2351. the Lord.

  2352. So slow

  2353. down there

  2354. in the

  2355. beginning.

  2356. Am I

  2357. showing

  2358. honor?

  2359. What does

  2360. that even

  2361. mean?

  2362. What would

  2363. that look

  2364. like in

  2365. this

  2366. relationship,

  2367. in that

  2368. relationship?

  2369. And then

  2370. when you

  2371. get to the

  2372. reactive parts,

  2373. 14 to

  2374. 21 that we

  2375. covered

  2376. earlier,

  2377. what does

  2378. it mean

  2379. to overcome

  2380. evil with

  2381. good?

  2382. Okay,

  2383. see,

  2384. live peaceably

  2385. with all,

  2386. that's obvious.

  2387. What would

  2388. that look

  2389. like in

  2390. this really

  2391. difficult

  2392. situation?

  2393. Slow

  2394. down when

  2395. you're

  2396. reading it.

  2397. Romans

  2398. 12,

  2399. 9 to

  2400. 21 is

  2401. kind of

  2402. a lab

  2403. experiment

  2404. for

  2405. everything

  2406. that we're

  2407. learning

  2408. today.

  2409. And you'll

  2410. start to

  2411. see some

  2412. parallels in

  2413. the instructions

  2414. Paul gives

  2415. us after

  2416. 11 chapters

  2417. of exalting

  2418. the gospel

  2419. of Christ.

  2420. You'll see

  2421. parallels between

  2422. that and

  2423. what James

  2424. gives us

  2425. in chapter

  2426. 4,

  2427. where he

  2428. doesn't spend

  2429. as much

  2430. time exalting

  2431. the gospel

  2432. of Christ.

  2433. You see

  2434. parallels there.

  2435. Allow the

  2436. glorious gospel

  2437. to inform how

  2438. you apply

  2439. these things.

  2440. And just

  2441. underscoring

  2442. chapter 12

  2443. verse 18,

  2444. a word on

  2445. this.

  2446. You can't

  2447. always live

  2448. at peace

  2449. with somebody

  2450. because that

  2451. requires two

  2452. people.

  2453. You can

  2454. live

  2455. peaceably

  2456. toward

  2457. somebody.

  2458. That just

  2459. requires one

  2460. person.

  2461. Such that

  2462. your chronic

  2463. posture is

  2464. to desire

  2465. peace with

  2466. this person

  2467. as soon as

  2468. they're ready

  2469. to move

  2470. toward it.

  2471. There may

  2472. be people,

  2473. and again,

  2474. let me share

  2475. this as a

  2476. caution.

  2477. There may be

  2478. people with

  2479. whom pursuing

  2480. peace requires

  2481. a lot of

  2482. counsel.

  2483. I don't mean

  2484. the two of you

  2485. going to

  2486. counseling.

  2487. If there's

  2488. been an

  2489. unsafe

  2490. situation you've

  2491. been in and

  2492. you're thinking

  2493. that's one of

  2494. the relationships

  2495. of applying

  2496. this teaching,

  2497. I think that's

  2498. right and good.

  2499. get counsel

  2500. because it's

  2501. different than

  2502. someone who

  2503. forgot to

  2504. bring a gift

  2505. to your

  2506. birthday party.

  2507. It's different

  2508. from someone

  2509. who gathered

  2510. a group of

  2511. friends to

  2512. go out to

  2513. dinner and

  2514. didn't invite

  2515. you.

  2516. Those are

  2517. major

  2518. substantial

  2519. injustices

  2520. that require

  2521. wisdom to

  2522. step into.

  2523. But let me

  2524. ask you these

  2525. questions to

  2526. close.

  2527. do you

  2528. believe that

  2529. the person

  2530. you're in

  2531. conflict with

  2532. is not

  2533. your enemy?

  2534. Are you

  2535. sufficiently

  2536. suspicious of

  2537. your contribution

  2538. to the

  2539. problem?

  2540. Are you

  2541. willing to

  2542. see yourself

  2543. as enemy

  2544. number one?

  2545. will you

  2546. consider how

  2547. much the

  2548. world shapes

  2549. your perspective

  2550. of conflict

  2551. and of

  2552. relationships?

  2553. Will you

  2554. take seriously

  2555. the call to

  2556. draw near

  2557. to God?

  2558. what we

  2559. learn by

  2560. studying these

  2561. three enemies

  2562. is that there

  2563. really is a

  2564. whole lot we

  2565. can do in

  2566. these conflict

  2567. situations

  2568. that can

  2569. avoid them,

  2570. resolve them,

  2571. or lessen

  2572. them.

  2573. So that

  2574. ultimate peace

  2575. between you,

  2576. you're living

  2577. ready for

  2578. peace,

  2579. which is all

  2580. you can be

  2581. responsible to

  2582. do.

  2583. And then you

  2584. trust God

  2585. for him

  2586. working on

  2587. the other

  2588. person.

  2589. Or people

  2590. being ready

  2591. for peace.

  2592. Alright,

  2593. James 4,

  2594. going to

  2595. war with

  2596. conflict,

  2597. fighting the

  2598. right enemies,

  2599. yourself,

  2600. friendship with

  2601. the world,

  2602. and distance

  2603. from God.
