  1. We have been going through the Beatitudes, one Beatitude at a time, one statement of

  2. blessing and happiness at a time in Matthew chapter 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  3. Today we are on the seventh Beatitude in verse 9, but I'll read verse 1 to 12.

  4. But before I do that, let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  5. Heavenly Father, you are the God of peace, and you have made peace for us by the blood

  6. of your only Son, Jesus Christ.

  7. So Lord, make that reality, that peace that no one can take from us, grip our lives.

  8. And change our hearts.

  9. And even today, even this very moment, address us from your Word and by your Word, transform

  10. us more and more to be peacemakers.

  11. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  12. Amen.

  13. Please stand if you're able to honor God as we read from his Word, Matthew 5, verses 1 to

    Matthew 5:1–12

  14. 12.

  15. Amen.

  16. for they shall be satisfied.

  17. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

  18. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

  19. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

  20. blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake for theirs is the kingdom

  21. of heaven blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil

  22. against you falsely on my account rejoice and be glad for your reward is great in heaven

  23. for so they persecuted the prophets who are before you this is god's holy and authoritative word you

  24. may be seated there has never been in a period there's never been a hit period in history in

  25. recorded history at least that has been completely free of wars there have been periods of relative

  26. peace and stability for example historians often talk about the Pax Romana the Roman peace between

  27. 27 BC and 180 CE when the Roman Empire dominated the world and enforced stability but even during

  28. that time there were the Roman Parthian Wars and the many Jewish revolts that were brutally crushed and

  29. suppressed by the Roman Empire some people point to the Pax Mongolica the Mongolian peace in the 13th and

  30. 14th centuries when Genghis Khan's conquest and the ensuing domination of the Mongolian Empire enforced

  31. peace along the peace along the Silk Road but even during that time there was the Mongolian invasion of Japan and the extended war against the Mamluks in the Middle East and that's not even counting the civil wars within the Mongolian Empire

  32. some people point to the heyday of the the British Empire the Pax Britannica but even during that time there was the war against China the opium wars against China the Crimean War against Russia

  33. and of course American Civil War against Russia and of course American Civil War was happening during that time

  34. we haven't yet had a World War III but the world has still been plagued by wars the Vietnam War Korean War Soviet African War the numerous Arab Israeli wars the Gulf War Iraq War Rwandan genocide civil war

  35. second Congo war Chinese Civil War and the ongoing Russo Ukrainian war and I'm just scratching the surface of the wars that have taken place

  36. there has never been a period in recorded human history that has been free of wars and that is no exaggeration

  37. but why nobody claims to want war and everybody claims to want peace so why can't we have peace

  38. we find God's answer and solution in the seventh beatitude blessed are the peacemakers

  39. for they shall be called sons of God ultimately this passage teaches us that we are peacemakers because our heavenly father has made peace with us in Jesus Christ

  40. and I'm going to talk about that first by defining what peace is and then we'll talk about peacemaking what that entails and then we'll finally talk about the prince of peace who enables us to have peace

  41. we all know that peace is the opposite of war and the Bible often makes that contrast and uses that contrast

  42. when there is peace there is an absence of conflict absence of strife

  43. but peace in biblical terms is also more than that it's deeper than simply an absence of conflict

  44. for example in Genesis 43 27 when Joseph meets his brothers who come to Egypt to buy grain

  45. it says that he inquired about their welfare and said is your father well the old man of whom you spoke is he still alive

  46. and in that questioning the word welfare is the same Hebrew word for peace

  47. so peace is not just an absence of conflict but it can mean well-being wholeness welfare

  48. it's the Hebrew word shalom which many of you have heard before

  49. and this sense of well-being isn't merely about physical health and well-being either

  50. it's about relational well-being

  51. making covenant with someone in the Old Testament was often called making peace with someone

  52. so if you have peace with somebody then you are in a right relationship with that person

  53. and in that sense peace is different from a mere truce or a ceasefire

  54. because even when there is no open fire or open conflict

  55. the relationship between peoples and nations can be deeply disturbed and disordered

  56. for example think about the Korean War which ended in 1953

  57. with the signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement

  58. it divided Korea into two halves North and South Korea

  59. and then it established a demilitarized zone in the middle along the 38th parallel

  60. but is that peace?

  61. there is no peace

  62. they are still divided

  63. they are still enemies

  64. there is still hostility between the two nations

  65. they are still

  66. they are waging a war of propaganda

  67. and posturing

  68. they are building up their respective militaries

  69. and securing themselves against the other

  70. it's merely a frozen conflict

  71. it's a cold war

  72. but it's a war nonetheless

  73. there is no peace

  74. Israel and Hamas currently have a truce in place

  75. actually may have just expired today

  76. I forget exactly when it expires

  77. but that's no peace either

  78. war threatens to break out any minute

  79. peace goes deeper than a mere truce or a ceasefire

  80. it entails right relationship

  81. restoration

  82. reconciliation

  83. and the most important peace that the Bible speaks of is peace with God

  84. God himself says of his people in Ezekiel 34 25

  85. I will make with them a covenant of peace

  86. Isaiah 54 10 says

  87. my steadfast love shall not depart from you

  88. and my covenant of peace shall not be removed

  89. to have peace with God then

  90. is to be in right relationship with him

  91. to have a covenant with him

  92. and to have his loyal

  93. steadfast

  94. covenantal love upon us

  95. to have peace then

  96. in a full biblical sense

  97. is to fit into God's order and plan

  98. to be restored to wholeness

  99. and right relationship with him

  100. and it's only through that restored relationship

  101. vertically with God

  102. that there can be restored relationship

  103. horizontally with others

  104. it's a peace ultimately that comes from God

  105. the peace that can only be attained

  106. with God's help

  107. and therefore is impossible to attain apart from him

  108. that's why God is often called the God of peace

  109. or the Lord of peace

  110. and when Gideon builds an altar

  111. to honor him and to worship him

  112. he calls that altar

  113. the Lord is peace

  114. in Judges 6 24

  115. and that's why the fruit of the spirit

  116. and you guys know

  117. is love

  118. joy

  119. peace

  120. this is not a natural attribute

  121. or a temperament

  122. or an aspect of personality

  123. that we have

  124. naturally

  125. this is something that is

  126. spirit given

  127. God given

  128. spirit born fruit

  129. that marks the born again Christian

  130. that's what all of these beatitudes are

  131. our understanding of peace

  132. has implications for how we understand

  133. what it means to be a peacemaker

  134. first let's talk about what peacemaking is not

  135. and then secondly we'll talk about what peacemaking is

  136. since peace is more than a simple absence of conflict

  137. but having your life rightly ordered before God

  138. and being in restored to right relationship with him

  139. peacemaking is not merely avoiding conflict

  140. some people are naturally easygoing

  141. and they are conflict averse

  142. I think we have a lot of those in our church

  143. I don't know if that's Cambridge or something else

  144. but that doesn't necessarily make us peacemakers

  145. if you seek peace at any price

  146. then you're eventually going to pay a price that's too high for you to pay

  147. British Prime Minister

  148. Neville Chamberlain

  149. is a famous example of this

  150. in 1938

  151. Nazi Germany invaded Czechoslovakia

  152. France at the time had an alliance with the Czech Republic

  153. that they were obligated to honor

  154. they should have come to their aid

  155. however along with Neville Chamberlain

  156. the British Prime Minister

  157. and the French leaders

  158. they decided to appease Adolf Hitler

  159. by formally requesting that Czechoslovakia

  160. cede the territory that Germany had seized

  161. and powerless to do anything else

  162. they did cede that territory to Germany

  163. and that agreement is called the Munich Agreement

  164. but the Czechs call it the Munich Betrayal

  165. did they keep a semblance of peace?

  166. yes they did

  167. but it was a peace built on injustice

  168. and is it any wonder why that peace didn't last?

  169. Adolf Hitler was emboldened by the cowardice of the European leaders

  170. and then proceeded to invade Poland

  171. in 1939 starting World War II

  172. and World War II didn't end

  173. until Neville Chamberlain was replaced

  174. by someone with more backbone

  175. you may have heard of Winston Churchill

  176. if we subvert righteousness

  177. in the name of so-called peace

  178. then we are peace fakers

  179. not peacemakers

  180. that makes us appeasers

  181. in Jeremiah 6 14 to 15

  182. God denounces the false prophets

  183. and false peacemakers of Israel

  184. because they condoned the people's idolatry

  185. their sins against God

  186. and then yet they promised peace

  187. God's not going to judge you

  188. don't worry

  189. you'll have peace in the future

  190. and God denounces them

  191. and rejects them

  192. and says this about them

  193. they have healed the wound of my people

  194. lightly saying

  195. peace peace

  196. when there is no peace

  197. you cannot have true peace

  198. if you are forsaking the kingdom of God

  199. if you're forsaking the righteousness of God

  200. how can an idolatrous people

  201. have peace with God?

  202. contrast those false prophets

  203. with Jehu in 2 Kings 9 17 to 22

  204. Jehu is anointed to be king

  205. by an emissary of prophet Elisha

  206. and he is anointed by God

  207. to go and avenge the blood

  208. of his prophets and servants

  209. whom Jezebel and Ahab

  210. and their household killed

  211. and so Jehu is riding furiously

  212. on his chariot

  213. going to exact vengeance

  214. on Jehu's

  215. sorry

  216. on Jezebel's son

  217. Joram

  218. King Joram

  219. Queen Mother Jezebel

  220. was still alive at this time

  221. and as he is riding to the palace

  222. these messengers come out

  223. repeatedly asking him

  224. tell us Jehu

  225. is it peace?

  226. peace?

  227. and then he keeps going

  228. he doesn't stop

  229. eventually he gets to King Joram

  230. and King Joram asks him

  231. is it peace Jehu?

  232. and then Jehu tells him

  233. what peace can there be

  234. so long as the hoardings

  235. and the sorceries

  236. of your mother Jezebel

  237. are so many

  238. there can be no peace

  239. in the presence of idolatry

  240. and wickedness

  241. peace at the expense

  242. of truth and justice

  243. is not peace

  244. it's compromise

  245. the idols must be struck down

  246. and righteousness must reign

  247. then and only then

  248. can we have true peace

  249. this explains the tension

  250. we see in Jesus' person

  251. and message

  252. on the one hand

  253. we see repeatedly

  254. the New Testament telling us

  255. that Jesus came to earth

  256. to bring peace

  257. at his birth

  258. the angels announced

  259. glory in the highest

  260. and peace on earth

  261. to those with whom

  262. God is pleased

  263. as he enters Jerusalem

  264. in Luke 19 42

  265. Jesus weeps over

  266. this unrepentant city

  267. saying

  268. would that you

  269. even you

  270. had known on this day

  271. the things that make

  272. for peace

  273. but now they are hidden

  274. from your eyes

  275. bringing peace was

  276. Jesus' mission

  277. and so he says

  278. to his disciples

  279. in John 14 27

  280. peace I leave with you

  281. my peace I give to you

  282. not as the world gives

  283. do I give to you

  284. let not your hearts

  285. be troubled

  286. neither let them be afraid

  287. so Jesus came to bring peace

  288. but on the other hand

  289. Jesus has this to say

  290. in Matthew 10 34 to 37

  291. do not think that I have come

  292. to bring peace to the earth

  293. I have not come to bring peace

  294. but a sword

  295. for I have come

  296. to set a man

  297. against his father

  298. and a daughter

  299. against her mother

  300. and a daughter-in-law

  301. against her mother-in-law

  302. and a person's enemies

  303. will be those

  304. of his own household

  305. whoever loves father

  306. or mother more than me

  307. is not worthy of me

  308. and whoever loves son

  309. or daughter more than me

  310. is not worthy of me

  311. so which is it

  312. did Jesus come to make peace

  313. or to bring a sword

  314. the answer is both

  315. he brings the offer

  316. of true peace

  317. but if our family members

  318. and friends

  319. reject Jesus

  320. then our ultimate allegiance

  321. must be to him

  322. and not to them

  323. that creates a disturbance

  324. it creates divisions

  325. that's the sword

  326. that Jesus is talking about

  327. but if you try to keep peace

  328. at the expense of truth

  329. than righteousness

  330. then you're not making peace

  331. you're just selling out

  332. it is no coincidence

  333. that the eighth beatitude

  334. which comes after this

  335. is blessed are those

  336. who are persecuted

  337. for the sake of righteousness

  338. this is also why

  339. the sixth beatitude

  340. precedes this one

  341. blessed are the pure in heart

  342. for they shall see God

  343. only after that

  344. the purity of heart

  345. do we get

  346. blessed are the peacemakers

  347. for they shall be called

  348. sons of God

  349. the importance of that order

  350. is confirmed by James 3 17

  351. which says

  352. the wisdom from above

  353. is first pure

  354. then peaceable

  355. gentle

  356. open to reason

  357. the wisdom of God

  358. is first pure

  359. then peaceable

  360. and that order

  361. is not incidental

  362. it's only the pure in heart

  363. who will one thing

  364. who desire one thing

  365. to please their Lord

  366. their God

  367. who can be true peacemakers

  368. because if you're seeking

  369. to please yourself

  370. or if you're seeking

  371. to please others

  372. you will never have peace

  373. in your life

  374. if your first goal

  375. is to keep peace

  376. at all costs

  377. you will never have

  378. true peace

  379. 18th century theologian

  380. Jonathan Edwards

  381. explains this

  382. in his book

  383. The Nature of True Virtue

  384. he says

  385. private affection

  386. if not subordinate

  387. to general affection

  388. is not only liable

  389. to issue

  390. and enmity

  391. to being in general

  392. but has a tendency

  393. to it

  394. and he gives an example

  395. that makes it a little clearer

  396. when a man

  397. is governed

  398. by a regard

  399. to his own

  400. private interest

  401. independent of regard

  402. to the public good

  403. such a temper

  404. exposes a man

  405. to act the part

  406. of an enemy

  407. to the public

  408. as in every case

  409. wherein his private interest

  410. seems to clash

  411. with the public

  412. is that not true?

  413. if our highest objective

  414. is our own

  415. private interest

  416. then wherever

  417. our private interest

  418. is at odds

  419. with the public good

  420. we're going to be

  421. a public enemy

  422. if our highest allegiance

  423. is to our class

  424. or to a political party

  425. or to a race

  426. or to a nation

  427. or to a gender

  428. then naturally

  429. we will be

  430. classist

  431. racist

  432. chauvinist

  433. and sexist

  434. let me put it

  435. another way

  436. how do you get

  437. an orchestra

  438. of 50 something people

  439. to play harmoniously

  440. together

  441. not by having

  442. the various sections

  443. of the orchestra

  444. the strings

  445. the woodwinds

  446. the brass

  447. the percussions

  448. all play

  449. at their own rhythm

  450. and pace

  451. and key

  452. we also do not

  453. accomplish that

  454. by having

  455. every individual

  456. musician

  457. watch

  458. every other musician

  459. and try to match

  460. and sync up

  461. with them

  462. that would lead

  463. to chaos

  464. and cacophony

  465. we get an orchestra

  466. to play harmoniously

  467. together

  468. by having

  469. all of them

  470. follow the baton

  471. of the one

  472. conductor

  473. similarly

  474. as long as

  475. we are looking out

  476. for our own interests

  477. or the interests

  478. of our own factions

  479. as long as

  480. our driving

  481. motivation in life

  482. is what's in it

  483. for me

  484. or what's in it

  485. for us

  486. there will never

  487. be peace

  488. in our personal

  489. relationships

  490. or in the world

  491. because everybody

  492. else is doing

  493. the same thing

  494. and our desires

  495. are in conflict

  496. with each other

  497. James 4

  498. 1-2

  499. teaches us

  500. what causes

  501. quarrels

  502. and what causes

  503. fights among you

  504. is it not this

  505. that your passions

  506. are at war

  507. within you

  508. you desire

  509. and do not have

  510. so you murder

  511. you covet and

  512. cannot obtain

  513. so you fight

  514. and quarrel

  515. this is the root

  516. of all conflict

  517. there will be no end

  518. to warring nations

  519. as long as there are

  520. warring passions

  521. between persons

  522. but if our

  523. overriding concern

  524. is instead

  525. our father in heaven

  526. hallowed be your name

  527. your kingdom come

  528. and your will be done

  529. on earth

  530. as it is in heaven

  531. if our highest

  532. objective in life

  533. is to please

  534. the one true God

  535. who is over all

  536. and through all

  537. and in all

  538. then we can have

  539. true peace

  540. and unity

  541. among all peoples

  542. in his book

  543. shining like stars

  544. the power of the gospel

  545. in the world's universities

  546. Lindsay Brown

  547. the former CEO

  548. of international fellowship

  549. of evangelical students

  550. illustrates this reality

  551. during the Burundi genocide

  552. in the early 90s

  553. a number of Tutsis

  554. were killed

  555. on campus

  556. of Bujumbura University

  557. by the Hutus

  558. imagine

  559. intentional murder

  560. happening on your

  561. university campuses

  562. and many of the Tutsis

  563. out of fear

  564. fled to the mountains

  565. during that time

  566. some Hutu Christians

  567. chased after

  568. followed after

  569. these Christian

  570. Tutsis

  571. who had fled

  572. to the mountains

  573. and they brought

  574. them food

  575. and clothing

  576. took care of them

  577. comforted them

  578. and many of these

  579. courageous Hutu

  580. Christians

  581. were disowned

  582. by their own

  583. family members

  584. because they chose

  585. to put their

  586. Christian allegiance

  587. their allegiance

  588. to Christ

  589. above their allegiance

  590. to their ethnic group

  591. and because of that

  592. experience

  593. the non-Christian

  594. president of

  595. Bujumbura University

  596. in Burundi

  597. made this

  598. extraordinary remark

  599. our culture

  600. is disintegrating

  601. on our campus

  602. there are three

  603. groups of people

  604. Hutus

  605. Tutsis

  606. and Christians

  607. if our culture

  608. is to survive

  609. we must follow

  610. the example

  611. of the Christians

  612. the source

  613. of all

  614. conflicts

  615. and wars

  616. in the world

  617. ultimately

  618. is that sinful desire

  619. and when desire

  620. has conceived

  621. it gives birth

  622. to sin

  623. and when sin

  624. it is fully grown

  625. it brings forth

  626. death

  627. the only way

  628. to make ultimate

  629. peace then

  630. is not negotiations

  631. not diplomacy

  632. but conversions

  633. the only way

  634. to get ultimate

  635. peace

  636. is to have people

  637. surrender

  638. to the lordship

  639. of Christ

  640. and to submit

  641. their passions

  642. and desires

  643. to God

  644. and it's when

  645. the gospel

  646. of Jesus Christ

  647. transforms them

  648. from the inside

  649. out to seek

  650. God's will

  651. rather than

  652. their own wills

  653. their own private

  654. interests

  655. that's the only

  656. path

  657. to true peace

  658. 20th century

  659. Walsh pastor

  660. D. Martin

  661. Lloyd-Jones

  662. concurs

  663. he says

  664. if every man

  665. and woman

  666. in the world

  667. knew what it was

  668. to hunger

  669. and thirst

  670. after righteousness

  671. there would be

  672. no danger

  673. of war

  674. here is the only

  675. way to real peace

  676. all other

  677. considerations

  678. eventually do not

  679. touch the problem

  680. and all the

  681. denunciations

  682. that are so

  683. constantly made

  684. of various

  685. countries

  686. and peoples

  687. and persons

  688. will not have

  689. the slightest

  690. effect upon

  691. the international

  692. situation

  693. the greatest

  694. need in the

  695. world now

  696. is for a

  697. greater number

  698. of Christians

  699. individual

  700. Christians

  701. if all nations

  702. consisted of

  703. individual Christians

  704. there would be

  705. no need to fear

  706. atomic power

  707. or anything else

  708. so the gospel

  709. which seems to be

  710. so remote

  711. and indirect

  712. in its approach

  713. is actually

  714. the most direct

  715. way of solving

  716. the problem

  717. one of the greatest

  718. tragedies in the life

  719. of the church today

  720. is the way in which

  721. so many are content

  722. with these vague

  723. general

  724. useless statements

  725. about war

  726. and peace

  727. instead of preaching

  728. the gospel

  729. in all its simplicity

  730. and purity

  731. so few have

  732. the theological

  733. clarity

  734. that D. Martin

  735. Lowe Jones

  736. had

  737. it's because

  738. of this

  739. that Martin

  740. Lowe Jones

  741. understood

  742. that because

  743. he understood

  744. this

  745. that he was

  746. not really

  747. enthused

  748. or excited

  749. or impressed

  750. when the Kellogg

  751. Pact

  752. was signed

  753. how many of you

  754. guys know

  755. what the Kellogg

  756. Pact is

  757. it's not surprising

  758. because it's pretty

  759. irrelevant at this

  760. point

  761. the Kellogg

  762. Pact

  763. was an

  764. international

  765. agreement

  766. on peace

  767. signed in

  768. 1928

  769. the signing

  770. states

  771. promised

  772. not to

  773. use war

  774. to resolve

  775. disputes

  776. or conflicts

  777. of whatever

  778. nature

  779. 15 nations

  780. signed it

  781. including

  782. the U.S.

  783. the U.K.

  784. France

  785. Germany

  786. Italy

  787. and Japan

  788. among others

  789. and at the

  790. time

  791. it was celebrated

  792. worldwide

  793. really as

  794. a pact

  795. that will

  796. outlaw

  797. war

  798. forever

  799. Lloyd

  800. Jones

  801. shocked

  802. his

  803. contemporary

  804. pastors

  805. with his

  806. lack

  807. of

  808. enthusiasm

  809. about

  810. the

  811. Kellogg

  812. Pact

  813. his

  814. colleagues

  815. wanted to

  816. talk about

  817. nothing but

  818. the Kellogg

  819. Pact

  820. this is a

  821. momentous

  822. occasion

  823. he was

  824. out

  825. okay

  826. yeah

  827. he just

  828. insisted

  829. on continuing

  830. to proclaim

  831. the gospel

  832. because he

  833. understood

  834. this

  835. and Lloyd

  836. Jones

  837. has been

  838. proven

  839. right

  840. by history

  841. because

  842. the three

  843. of the

  844. signatories

  845. who signed

  846. the Kellogg

  847. Pact

  848. started

  849. World War

  850. II

  851. just a

  852. short

  853. decade

  854. later

  855. and he

  856. hasn't

  857. really

  858. prevented

  859. much

  860. wars

  861. ever

  862. since

  863. either

  864. Lloyd

  865. Jones

  866. understood

  867. the profound

  868. reality

  869. that the

  870. root of

  871. conflict

  872. is sinful

  873. heart

  874. is sinful

  875. desires

  876. in our

  877. hearts

  878. we can

  879. be

  880. and this

  881. is why

  882. this is

  883. important

  884. we can

  885. be tempted

  886. to think

  887. in our

  888. present

  889. climate

  890. that the

  891. negotiators

  892. of the

  893. Israeli

  894. Hamas

  895. ceasefire

  896. what they

  897. are doing

  898. or what

  899. President

  900. Trump

  901. is

  902. attempting

  903. to do

  904. in negotiating

  905. an end

  906. to the

  907. Russo-Ukrainian

  908. war

  909. or the

  910. resolutions

  911. declared

  912. and proclaimed

  913. by the

  914. United Nations

  915. that these

  916. are the

  917. big

  918. and important

  919. and historic

  920. forms of

  921. peacemaking

  922. while our

  923. calling people

  924. to repent

  925. of their

  926. sins

  927. and our

  928. confessing of

  929. our own sins

  930. to one

  931. another

  932. and our

  933. reconciliation

  934. with one

  935. another

  936. these are

  937. small

  938. insignificant

  939. forms of

  940. peacemaking

  941. and our

  942. but to

  943. think that

  944. way is

  945. a big

  946. mistake

  947. we are

  948. dealing

  949. with the

  950. root

  951. we have

  952. the real

  953. solution

  954. the gospel

  955. we're in

  956. the work

  957. of curative

  958. care

  959. really trying

  960. to cure

  961. the underlying

  962. disease

  963. they're in

  964. the work

  965. of palliative

  966. care

  967. managing

  968. pain

  969. without

  970. actually

  971. seeking to

  972. heal

  973. the underlying

  974. disease

  975. the work

  976. we are

  977. doing

  978. is of

  979. eternal

  980. significance

  981. because

  982. every human

  983. soul

  984. that you

  985. seek

  986. reconciliation

  987. and peace

  988. with

  989. is going

  990. to live

  991. forever

  992. and every

  993. single soul

  994. that repents

  995. of their

  996. sins

  997. and is

  998. thereby

  999. reconciled

  1000. to God

  1001. will live

  1002. forever

  1003. every person

  1004. you talk

  1005. to will

  1006. either live

  1007. forever

  1008. in heaven

  1009. or in hell

  1010. depending on

  1011. how they

  1012. respond to

  1013. the offer

  1014. of peace

  1015. that God

  1016. has given

  1017. us in

  1018. Jesus

  1019. Christ

  1020. compared to

  1021. that

  1022. all the

  1023. peacemaking

  1024. work and

  1025. the great

  1026. diplomacy

  1027. that is

  1028. happening

  1029. in place

  1030. though not

  1031. unimportant

  1032. is of

  1033. temporal

  1034. significance

  1035. because no

  1036. nation state

  1037. lasts forever

  1038. every kingdom

  1039. eventually

  1040. falls

  1041. every earthly

  1042. kingdom

  1043. this truth

  1044. by the way

  1045. is why

  1046. Jesus

  1047. and the

  1048. Bible

  1049. focus

  1050. relentlessly

  1051. on personal

  1052. repentance

  1053. and interpersonal

  1054. reconciliation

  1055. throughout

  1056. gospels

  1057. throughout

  1058. scripture

  1059. but they

  1060. don't have

  1061. much to

  1062. say about

  1063. ending

  1064. wars

  1065. and forming

  1066. international

  1067. treaties

  1068. it's not

  1069. that Jesus

  1070. was unaware

  1071. of geopolitical

  1072. realities

  1073. do you think

  1074. that Jesus

  1075. never heard

  1076. of how

  1077. King

  1078. Herod

  1079. the first

  1080. tried to

  1081. kill him

  1082. by killing

  1083. all the

  1084. males

  1085. under the

  1086. age of

  1087. two

  1088. in Bethlehem

  1089. so that

  1090. they could

  1091. eliminate

  1092. him

  1093. as a

  1094. threat to

  1095. his throne

  1096. as the

  1097. Messiah

  1098. do you think

  1099. Jesus was

  1100. unaware of

  1101. the extortionist

  1102. tax burden

  1103. that the Roman

  1104. authorities placed

  1105. on the Jews

  1106. do you think

  1107. he never heard

  1108. about that

  1109. from his

  1110. disciples

  1111. taxation

  1112. without

  1113. representation

  1114. is tyranny

  1115. right

  1116. that was the

  1117. slogan of

  1118. the American

  1119. revolution

  1120. and these

  1121. Jews

  1122. had it

  1123. worse

  1124. they asked

  1125. Jesus

  1126. is it

  1127. lawful

  1128. to pay

  1129. taxes

  1130. to Caesar

  1131. or not

  1132. and Jesus

  1133. does not

  1134. launch off

  1135. into a speech

  1136. about the

  1137. political

  1138. oppression

  1139. and injustice

  1140. of the

  1141. Romans

  1142. he says

  1143. render to

  1144. Caesar

  1145. what is

  1146. Caesar's

  1147. render to

  1148. God

  1149. what is

  1150. God's

  1151. in Luke

  1152. 13

  1153. when people

  1154. tell Jesus

  1155. about how

  1156. Pilate

  1157. the Roman

  1158. governor

  1159. when the

  1160. Jews were

  1161. offering

  1162. their

  1163. sacrifices

  1164. these

  1165. Galilean

  1166. Jews

  1167. he kills

  1168. them

  1169. and then

  1170. he up

  1171. mingles

  1172. their blood

  1173. with the

  1174. sacrifices

  1175. that they

  1176. were making

  1177. an atrocity

  1178. blasphemy

  1179. injustice

  1180. and oppression

  1181. we might

  1182. expect Jesus

  1183. to rise up

  1184. with indignation

  1185. and rally

  1186. his followers

  1187. and retrofit

  1188. them with

  1189. weapons

  1190. and ride

  1191. into Jerusalem

  1192. on a stallion

  1193. and overthrow

  1194. the Roman

  1195. empire

  1196. but no

  1197. he tells

  1198. them

  1199. unless you

  1200. repent

  1201. you all

  1202. will likewise

  1203. perish

  1204. he always

  1205. turns these

  1206. things right

  1207. back around

  1208. to the

  1209. people

  1210. and to

  1211. make it

  1212. makes it

  1213. an issue

  1214. of personal

  1215. repentance

  1216. and their

  1217. relationship

  1218. with God

  1219. think about

  1220. that

  1221. that's kind

  1222. of a

  1223. confusing

  1224. response

  1225. unless you

  1226. understand

  1227. the spiritual

  1228. realities

  1229. we're speaking

  1230. of

  1231. I've spent

  1232. enough time

  1233. defining and

  1234. qualifying

  1235. peacemaking

  1236. let's get

  1237. down to

  1238. business

  1239. nitty gritty

  1240. details of what

  1241. that looks

  1242. like

  1243. sorry

  1244. the

  1245. beatitude

  1246. isn't

  1247. blessed

  1248. are

  1249. the

  1250. peace

  1251. lovers

  1252. or the

  1253. peace

  1254. talkers

  1255. it's

  1256. blessed

  1257. are the

  1258. peacemakers

  1259. people who

  1260. do

  1261. peace

  1262. first we

  1263. must make

  1264. peace in

  1265. our

  1266. relationships

  1267. with our

  1268. Christian

  1269. brothers and

  1270. sisters

  1271. the Bible

  1272. talks so

  1273. often about

  1274. this I

  1275. could have

  1276. spent the

  1277. entire sermon

  1278. just reading

  1279. quote after

  1280. quote after

  1281. quote of

  1282. this

  1283. command

  1284. I'll sample

  1285. just a couple

  1286. 2nd Corinthians

  1287. 13 11

  1288. says aim

  1289. for

  1290. restoration

  1291. comfort

  1292. one another

  1293. agree

  1294. with one

  1295. another

  1296. live in

  1297. peace

  1298. and the

  1299. God of

  1300. love and

  1301. peace

  1302. will be

  1303. with you

  1304. Christians

  1305. cannot

  1306. accept

  1307. conflict

  1308. as a

  1309. status quo

  1310. we are

  1311. commanded

  1312. to aim

  1313. for

  1314. restoration

  1315. we are

  1316. commanded

  1317. to agree

  1318. with one

  1319. another

  1320. to live

  1321. in peace

  1322. over the

  1323. last 10

  1324. years of

  1325. church life

  1326. I've had

  1327. number of

  1328. conflicts

  1329. with people

  1330. in church

  1331. and one

  1332. of the

  1333. things that

  1334. I'm very

  1335. proud of

  1336. of people

  1337. in our

  1338. church

  1339. and people

  1340. who are

  1341. here

  1342. is that

  1343. we have

  1344. walked

  1345. through

  1346. those

  1347. things

  1348. we did

  1349. not sit

  1350. in conflict

  1351. we didn't

  1352. let that

  1353. conflict

  1354. simmer

  1355. and exist

  1356. indefinitely

  1357. we worked

  1358. through those

  1359. things

  1360. and made

  1361. peace

  1362. peace

  1363. and I've

  1364. seen a

  1365. number of

  1366. believers

  1367. do that

  1368. in our

  1369. church

  1370. that

  1371. passing

  1372. the

  1373. peace

  1374. is not

  1375. just a

  1376. formality

  1377. real

  1378. making

  1379. peace

  1380. happens

  1381. during that

  1382. time

  1383. it starts

  1384. during those

  1385. times

  1386. and then it

  1481. that's

  1482. inevitable

  1483. if we

  1484. stand

  1485. for

  1487. but

  1488. as

  1489. far

  1490. as

  1491. it

  1492. depends

  1493. on

  1494. us

  1495. we

  1496. must

  1503. of

  1504. Christians

  1505. at

  1510. to

  1511. live

  1512. in

  1513. this

  1514. peace

  1515. we do

  1563. when

  1564. you

  1565. should

  1566. listen

  1567. we

  1568. learned

  1570. Titus

  1571. 3

  1572. last

  1573. week

  1574. which

  1575. said

  1578. to

  1579. be

  1580. submissive

  1581. to

  1582. rulers

  1583. and

  1585. to be

  1586. obedient

  1587. for every

  1608. we

  1633. do

  1634. not

  1635. be

  1636. quarrelsome

  1637. and

  1638. there's

  1639. a

  1640. difference

  1641. between

  1642. sincere

  1643. debates

  1644. and

  1645. foolish

  1646. controversies

  1647. the

  1674. the

  1675. latter

  1676. deals

  1677. with

  1678. trivialities

  1679. as

  1680. Christians

  1681. we

  1682. already

  1683. have

  1684. the

  1685. unity

  1686. of

  1687. the

  1688. spirit

  1689. that

  1690. is

  1691. a

  1694. that

  1695. God

  1699. in

  1700. his

  1701. son

  1702. Jesus

  1703. Christ

  1704. but

  1705. then

  1706. we

  1707. are

  1708. commanded

  1709. to

  1710. maintain

  1711. the

  1713. of

  1716. in

  1717. the

  1740. this

  1741. is

  1742. the

  1743. hard

  1744. but

  1745. important

  1956. that

  1957. we're

  1964. blessed

  1965. are

  1966. the

  1970. shall

  1971. be

  1972. called

  1973. sons

  1974. of

  1975. God

  1976. we

  1977. find

  1978. the

  1979. same

  1980. promise

  1981. in

  1982. this

  1983. passage

  1984. in

  1985. Matthew

  1993. and

  1994. pray

  1995. for

  1996. those

  1997. who

  1998. persecute

  1999. you

  2003. strive

  2004. for

  2005. peace

  2006. even

  2007. with

  2008. those

  2009. who

  2010. oppose

  2011. you

  2012. your

  2014. so

  2015. that

  2016. you

  2017. may

  2027. the

  2028. command

  2029. to

  2030. make

  2031. peace

  2032. is

  2033. rooted

  2034. in

  2035. the

  2036. promise

  2037. of

  2038. sonship

  2039. the

  2040. phrase

  2041. son

  2042. of

  2043. dot

  2044. dot

  2045. dot

  2048. of

  2049. fill

  2053. is

  2054. a

  2055. Hebrew

  2056. idiom

  2057. for

  2058. example

  2059. when

  2060. Psalm

  2061. 89

  2062. 22

  2063. refers

  2064. to

  2065. the

  2066. wicked

  2067. it

  2068. calls

  2069. them

  2070. literally

  2071. sons

  2072. of

  2073. wickedness

  2074. Proverbs

    Proverbs 31:5

  2075. 31

  2076. verse

  2077. 5

  2078. describes

  2079. those

  2080. who

  2081. are

  2082. afflicted

  2083. literally

  2084. as

  2085. sons

  2086. of

  2087. affliction

  2088. Deuteronomy

  2089. 3

  2090. 18

  2091. describes

  2092. the

  2094. people

  2095. as

  2096. sons

  2097. of

  2098. valor

  2099. so

  2100. sons

  2101. of

  2102. God

  2103. are

  2104. those

  2105. who

  2106. share

  2107. God's

  2108. spiritual

  2109. nature

  2110. why

  2111. will

  2112. peacemakers

  2113. be called

  2114. sons

  2115. of

  2116. God

  2117. because

  2118. their

  2119. heavenly

  2120. father

  2121. is

  2122. the

  2123. God

  2124. of

  2125. peace

  2126. and

  2127. they

  2128. attest

  2129. to

  2130. their

  2131. sonship

  2132. by

  2133. their

  2134. peacemaking

  2135. our

  2136. heavenly

  2137. father

  2138. loves

  2139. his

  2140. children

  2141. in a

  2142. special

  2143. way

  2144. but

  2145. he

  2146. also

  2147. loves

  2148. the

  2149. world

  2150. in a

  2151. general

  2152. way

  2153. there

  2154. is

  2155. a

  2156. such

  2157. thing

  2158. as

  2159. common

  2160. grace

  2161. that is

  2162. common

  2163. to all

  2164. of

  2165. humanity

  2166. he

  2167. makes

  2168. the

  2169. sun

  2170. rise

  2171. and

  2172. the

  2173. rain

  2174. showers

  2175. fall

  2176. on

  2177. both

  2178. the

  2183. that's

  2184. his

  2186. his

  2187. kindness

  2188. that

  2189. no

  2190. human

  2191. being

  2192. deserves

  2193. likewise

  2194. we should

  2195. resemble

  2196. our

  2197. heavenly

  2198. father

  2199. by

  2200. loving

  2201. our

  2202. enemies

  2203. and

  2204. praying

  2205. for

  2206. them

  2207. by

  2208. seeking

  2209. their

  2210. good

  2211. and

  2212. when

  2213. you

  2214. see

  2215. an

  2216. enemy

  2217. passing

  2218. by

  2219. instead

  2220. of

  2221. giving

  2222. them

  2223. the

  2224. cold

  2225. shoulder

  2226. you

  2227. swallow

  2228. your

  2229. pride

  2230. and

  2231. you

  2232. greet

  2233. them

  2234. when

  2235. you

  2236. see

  2237. an

  2238. opportunity

  2239. to

  2240. serve

  2241. your

  2242. enemy

  2243. when

  2244. they

  2245. suffer

  2246. you

  2247. do

  2248. good

  2249. to

  2250. them

  2251. of

  2252. course

  2253. it's

  2254. possible

  2255. maybe

  2256. even

  2257. likely

  2258. that

  2259. they

  2260. will

  2261. not

  2262. reciprocate

  2263. it

  2264. takes

  2265. two

  2266. parties

  2267. to

  2268. be

  2269. reconciled

  2270. even

  2271. if

  2272. we

  2273. humble

  2274. ourselves

  2275. and

  2276. love

  2277. our

  2278. enemies

  2279. they

  2280. might

  2281. still

  2282. be

  2283. our

  2284. enemies

  2285. and

  2286. hate

  2287. us

  2288. but

  2289. we

  2290. must

  2291. still

  2292. do

  2293. our

  2294. part

  2295. the

  2296. Bible

  2297. is

  2298. very

  2299. realistic

  2300. and

  2301. practical

  2302. about

  2303. these

  2304. things

  2305. it's

  2306. in

  2307. Romans

  2308. 12

  2309. 14

  2310. to

  2311. 21

  2312. bless

  2313. those

  2314. who

  2315. persecute

  2316. you

  2317. and

  2318. bless

  2319. and do

  2320. not

  2321. curse

  2322. them

  2323. live in

  2324. harmony

  2325. with

  2326. one

  2327. another

  2328. repay

  2329. no

  2330. one

  2331. evil

  2332. for

  2333. evil

  2334. if

  2335. possible

  2336. so far

  2337. as it

  2338. depends

  2339. on you

  2340. live

  2341. peaceably

  2342. with

  2343. all

  2344. beloved

  2345. never

  2346. avenge

  2347. yourselves

  2348. but leave

  2349. it to

  2350. the wrath

  2351. of God

  2352. for it

  2353. is written

  2354. vengeance

  2355. is mine

  2356. I will

  2357. repay

  2358. says the

  2359. Lord

  2360. to the

  2361. contrary

  2362. if your

  2363. enemy

  2364. is hungry

  2365. feed him

  2366. if he

  2367. is thirsty

  2368. !

  2369. Give him

  2370. something

  2371. to drink

  2372. for by

  2373. so doing

  2374. you will

  2375. keep

  2376. burning

  2377. coals

  2378. on his

  2379. head

  2380. do

  2381. not

  2382. be

  2383. overcome

  2384. by

  2385. evil

  2386. but

  2387. overcome

  2388. evil

  2389. with

  2390. good

  2391. that's

  2392. what

  2393. it

  2394. looks

  2395. like

  2396. to be

  2397. peacemakers

  2398. in an

  2399. evil

  2400. and

  2401. unbelieving

  2402. world

  2403. we

  2404. overcome

  2405. evil

  2406. with

  2407. good

  2408. and

  2409. we

  2410. leave

  2411. the

  2412. vengeance

  2413. to

  2414. God

  2415. and

  2416. then

  2417. we

  2418. live

  2419. peaceably

  2420. with

  2421. all

  2422. people

  2423. believers

  2424. and

  2425. unbelievers

  2426. as far

  2427. as it

  2428. depends

  2429. on

  2430. us

  2431. if

  2432. there's

  2433. lack

  2434. of

  2435. peace

  2436. in

  2437. your

  2438. relationship

  2439. if

  2440. there

  2441. is

  2442. lingering

  2443. !

  2444. conflict

  2445. in

  2446. your

  2447. lives

  2448. do

  2449. not

  2450. to

  2451. make

  2452. it

  2453. because

  2454. of

  2455. you

  2456. do

  2457. everything

  2458. you

  2459. can

  2460. to

  2461. make

  2462. peace

  2463. but

  2464. living

  2465. like

  2466. this

  2467. is

  2468. difficult

  2469. cultivating

  2470. poverty

  2471. of

  2472. spirit

  2473. mourning

  2474. and

  2475. meekness

  2476. and

  2477. hunger

  2478. and

  2479. thirst

  2480. for

  2481. righteousness

  2482. mercifulness

  2483. and

  2484. purity

  2485. of

  2486. heart

  2487. so

  2488. that

  2489. we

  2490. might

  2491. be

  2492. peacemakers

  2493. is

  2494. impossible

  2495. apart

  2496. from

  2497. the

  2498. peacemaking

  2499. work

  2500. that

  2501. God

  2502. has

  2503. done

  2504. for

  2505. us

  2506. in

  2507. Jesus

  2508. Christ

  2509. that's

  2510. why

  2511. he

  2512. is

  2513. called

  2514. the

  2515. prince

  2516. of

  2517. peace

  2518. our

  2519. sonship

  2520. to

  2521. God

  2522. and

  2523. all

  2524. sons

  2525. and

  2526. daughters

  2527. all

  2528. the

  2529. children

  2530. of

  2531. God

  2532. are

  2533. called

  2534. sons

  2535. in

  2536. scripture

  2537. oftentimes

  2538. because

  2539. they

  2540. are

  2541. in

  2542. Jesus

  2543. Christ

  2544. God's

  2545. only

  2546. son

  2547. we

  2548. are

  2549. united

  2550. to

  2551. him

  2552. by

  2553. faith

  2554. our

  2555. sonship

  2556. our

  2557. heavenly

  2558. inheritance

  2559. our

  2560. salvation

  2561. they

  2562. do

  2563. not

  2564. depend

  2565. on

  2566. how

  2567. much

  2568. peacemaking

  2569. we

  2570. do

  2571. on

  2572. earth

  2573. John

  2574. 1

  2575. 11

  2576. to

  2577. 13

  2578. says

  2579. of

  2580. Jesus

  2581. this

  2582. is

  2583. how

  2584. we

  2585. become

  2586. sons

  2587. of

  2588. God

  2589. he

  2590. came

  2591. to

  2592. his

  2593. own

  2594. and

  2595. his

  2596. own

  2597. people

  2598. did

  2599. not

  2600. receive

  2601. him

  2602. he

  2603. is

  2604. speaking

  2605. of

  2606. Jesus

  2607. but

  2608. to

  2609. all

  2610. who

  2611. did

  2612. receive

  2613. him

  2614. who

  2615. believed

  2616. in

  2617. his

  2618. name

  2619. he

  2620. gave

  2621. the

  2622. right

  2623. to

  2624. become

  2625. children

  2626. of

  2627. God

  2628. who

  2629. were

  2630. born

  2631. not

  2632. of

  2633. blood

  2634. nor

  2635. of

  2636. the

  2637. will

  2638. of

  2639. the

  2640. flesh

  2641. !

  2642. but

  2643. by

  2644. believing

  2645. in

  2646. Jesus

  2647. Christ

  2648. who

  2649. is

  2650. our

  2651. peace

  2652. but

  2653. that

  2654. but

  2655. that

  2656. then

  2657. changes

  2658. us

  2659. in

  2660. his

  2661. famous

  2662. book

  2663. peace

  2664. child

  2665. I

  2666. think

  2667. many

  2668. of

  2669. you

  2670. may

  2671. have

  2672. heard

  2673. of

  2674. this

  2675. I've

  2676. heard

  2677. this

  2678. illustration

  2679. at

  2680. least

  2681. two

  2682. sermons

  2683. maybe

  2684. three

  2685. but

  2686. I

  2687. was

  2688. surprised

  2689. I

  2690. never

  2691. used

  2692. it

  2693. before

  2694. missionary

  2695. Don

  2696. Richardson

  2697. tells

  2698. the

  2699. story

  2700. of

  2701. his

  2702. work

  2703. as

  2704. a

  2705. missionary

  2706. Don

  2707. and

  2708. Carol

  2709. Richardson

  2710. moved

  2711. to

  2712. New

  2713. Guinea

  2714. in

  2715. 1962

  2716. to

  2717. minister

  2718. among

  2719. the

  2720. Sawi

  2721. people

  2722. and

  2723. at

  2724. the

  2725. time

  2726. the

  2727. Sawi

  2728. people

  2729. were

  2730. still

  2731. isolated

  2732. and

  2733. untouched

  2734. by

  2735. the

  2736. rest

  2737. of

  2738. the

  2739. world

  2740. and

  2741. they

  2742. were

  2743. head

  2744. hunting

  2745. cannibals

  2746. fascinated

  2747. by the

  2748. Richardsons

  2749. it's a

  2750. little

  2751. scary

  2752. the

  2753. two

  2754. rival

  2755. Sawi

  2756. tribes

  2757. decided

  2758. that

  2759. they

  2760. will

  2761. move

  2762. their

  2763. villages

  2764. right

  2765. next

  2766. to

  2767. their

  2768. jungle

  2769. house

  2770. so

  2771. on

  2772. opposite

  2773. sides

  2774. of

  2775. the

  2776. house

  2777. were

  2778. these

  2779. two

  2780. rival

  2781. tribes

  2782. of

  2783. the

  2784. Sawis

  2785. and

  2786. during

  2787. their

  2788. short

  2789. time

  2790. as

  2791. missionaries

  2792. there

  2793. they

  2794. witnessed

  2795. bitter

  2796. conflict

  2797. and

  2798. civil

  2799. war

  2800. between

  2801. these

  2802. two

  2803. groups

  2804. all

  2805. the

  2806. time

  2807. and

  2808. they

  2809. say

  2810. they

  2811. witnessed

  2812. 14

  2813. civil

  2814. wars

  2815. in

  2816. a

  2817. short

  2818. period

  2819. of

  2820. time

  2821. and

  2822. despite

  2823. their

  2824. many

  2825. attempts

  2826. to

  2827. share

  2828. the

  2829. gospel

  2830. with

  2831. them

  2832. and

  2833. to

  2834. make

  2835. peace

  2836. these

  2837. Sawi

  2838. tribes

  2839. did

  2840. not

  2841. respond

  2842. to

  2843. his

  2844. gospel

  2845. presentations

  2846. and

  2847. they

  2848. continued

  2849. to

  2850. war

  2851. against

  2852. each

  2853. other

  2854. and

  2855. at

  2856. some

  2857. point

  2858. he

  2859. was

  2860. discouraged

  2861. by

  2862. failure

  2863. of

  2864. the

  2865. gospel

  2866. at

  2867. the

  2868. time

  2869. and

  2870. he

  2871. didn't

  2872. know

  2873. how

  2874. to

  2875. present

  2876. the

  2877. gospel

  2878. to

  2879. them

  2880. in

  2881. a

  2882. compelling

  2883. way

  2884. that

  2885. they

  2886. can

  2887. understand

  2888. and

  2889. discouraged

  2890. and

  2891. fearful

  2892. of

  2893. the

  2894. constant

  2895. conflict

  2896. around

  2897. them

  2898. they

  2899. eventually

  2900. decided

  2901. okay

  2902. we're

  2903. going to

  2904. pack

  2905. up

  2906. and

  2907. leave

  2908. this

  2909. didn't

  2910. work

  2911. out

  2912. and

  2913. as

  2914. they

  2915. were

  2916. trying

  2917. to

  2918. leave

  2919. the

  2920. tribes

  2921. came

  2922. to

  2923. them

  2924. and

  2925. they

  2926. told

  2927. the

  2928. couple

  2929. if

  2930. you'll

  2931. stay

  2932. we

  2933. promise

  2934. we'll

  2935. make

  2936. peace

  2937. in

  2938. the

  2939. morning

  2940. the

  2941. next

  2942. morning

  2943. they

  2944. witnessed

  2945. most

  2946. amazing

  2947. ritual

  2948. the

  2949. two

  2950. tribes

  2951. lined

  2952. up

  2953. parallel

  2954. to

  2955. each

  2956. other

  2957. outside

  2958. the

  2959. home

  2960. on

  2961. either

  2962. side

  2963. of

  2964. the

  2965. clearing

  2966. and

  2967. then

  2968. suddenly

  2969. one

  2970. man

  2971. dashed

  2972. into

  2973. his

  2974. own

  2975. hut

  2976. and

  2977. grabbed

  2978. his

  2979. baby

  2980. son

  2981. and

  2982. started

  2983. sprinting

  2984. toward

  2985. the

  2986. other

  2987. side

  2988. and

  2989. then

  2990. after

  2991. him

  2992. comes

  2993. out

  2994. his

  2995. wife

  2996. mourning

  2997. and crying

  2998. and weeping

  3006. the

  3007. husband

  3008. with

  3009. agony

  3010. in

  3011. his

  3015. in

  3016. his

  3018. keeps

  3019. running

  3020. and

  3021. running

  3022. he

  3023. sprints

  3024. and

  3025. then

  3026. he

  3027. gets

  3028. to

  3029. the

  3030. other

  3031. side

  3032. and

  3033. gets

  3034. the

  3035. other

  3036. tribe

  3037. and

  3038. he

  3039. hands

  3040. them

  3041. his

  3042. baby

  3043. son

  3044. and

  3045. then

  3046. as

  3047. he

  3048. says

  3049. plead

  3050. the

  3051. peace

  3052. child

  3053. for

  3054. me

  3055. I

  3056. give

  3057. you

  3058. my

  3059. son

  3060. and

  3061. I

  3062. give

  3063. you

  3064. my

  3065. name

  3066. moments

  3067. later

  3068. the

  3069. ritual

  3070. repeats

  3071. itself

  3072. from

  3073. the

  3074. other

  3075. side

  3076. another

  3077. man

  3078. dashes

  3079. into

  3080. his

  3081. hut

  3082. and

  3083. grabs

  3084. his

  3085. baby

  3086. son

  3087. and

  3088. runs

  3089. !

  3090. out

  3091. and

  3092. people

  3093. try

  3094. to

  3095. catch

  3096. him

  3097. his

  3098. wife

  3099. tries

  3100. to

  3101. catch

  3102. him

  3103. and

  3104. he

  3105. can't

  3106. catch

  3107. him

  3108. and

  3109. he

  3110. goes

  3111. and

  3112. gives

  3113. the

  3114. son

  3115. over

  3116. to

  3117. the

  3118. other

  3119. tribe

  3120. and

  3121. says

  3122. plead

  3123. the

  3124. peace

  3125. child

  3126. for

  3127. me

  3128. !

  3129. I

  3130. give

  3131. you

  3132. my

  3133. son

  3134. and

  3135. I

  3136. give

  3137. you

  3138. my

  3139. name

  3140. as

  3141. long

  3142. as

  3143. these

  3144. two

  3145. children

  3146. called

  3147. the

  3148. peace

  3149. child

  3150. the

  3151. peace

  3152. children

  3153. remained

  3154. alive

  3155. there

  3156. would be

  3157. no war

  3158. between

  3159. these

  3160. two

  3161. tribes

  3162. after

  3163. they

  3164. die

  3165. is

  3166. another

  3167. story

  3168. which

  3169. is

  3170. why

  3171. they

  3172. need

  3173. the

  3174. gospel

  3175. because

  3176. to

  3177. wage

  3178. war

  3179. against

  3180. each

  3181. other

  3182. is

  3183. to

  3184. wage

  3185. war

  3186. against

  3187. your

  3188. own

  3189. Don

  3190. Richardson

  3191. at that

  3192. moment

  3193. realized

  3194. I

  3195. finally

  3196. have

  3197. a

  3198. way

  3199. to

  3200. present

  3201. the

  3202. gospel

  3203. to

  3204. these

  3205. tribe

  3206. members

  3207. in a

  3208. way

  3209. they

  3210. can

  3211. understand

  3212. Jesus

  3213. is

  3214. the

  3215. peace

  3216. child

  3217. Jesus

  3218. is

  3219. the

  3220. peace

  3221. child

  3222. that

  3223. God

  3224. the

  3225. father

  3226. gave

  3227. in

  3228. his

  3229. great

  3230. love

  3231. to

  3232. make

  3233. peace

  3234. with

  3235. his

  3236. enemies

  3237. to

  3238. make

  3239. peace

  3240. with

  3241. us

  3242. Romans

  3243. 5

  3244. tells

  3245. that

  3246. while

  3247. we

  3248. were

  3249. enemies

  3250. of

  3251. God

  3252. we

  3253. were

  3254. not

  3255. at

  3256. peace

  3257. with

  3258. God

  3259. we

  3260. were

  3261. opposed

  3262. to

  3263. him

  3264. we

  3265. were

  3266. hostile

  3267. toward

  3268. him

  3269. we

  3270. warred

  3271. against

  3272. him

  3273. and

  3274. rebelled

  3275. against

  3276. him

  3277. and

  3278. we

  3279. resisted

  3280. his

  3281. rule

  3282. and

  3283. we

  3284. fought

  3285. him

  3286. and

  3287. resisted

  3288. him

  3289. and

  3290. besmirched

  3291. his

  3292. good

  3293. name

  3294. and

  3295. yet

  3296. while

  3297. we

  3298. were

  3299. enemies

  3300. God

  3301. sends

  3302. his

  3303. only

  3304. son

  3305. the

  3306. son

  3307. of

  3308. God

  3309. becomes

  3310. the

  3311. son

  3312. of

  3313. man

  3314. takes

  3315. on

  3316. our

  3317. human

  3318. flesh

  3319. to

  3320. know

  3321. our

  3322. life

  3323. so

  3324. that

  3325. he

  3326. might

  3327. bring

  3328. peace

  3329. to

  3330. us

  3331. and

  3332. save

  3333. us

  3334. and

  3335. lift

  3336. us

  3337. up

  3338. to

  3339. be

  3340. sons

  3341. of

  3342. God

  3343. Jesus

  3344. dies

  3345. on

  3346. the

  3347. cross

  3348. the

  3349. death

  3350. that

  3351. we

  3352. deserve

  3353. to

  3354. die

  3355. as

  3356. rebels

  3357. and

  3358. as

  3359. enemies

  3360. of

  3361. God

  3362. instead

  3363. Jesus

  3364. dies

  3365. and

  3366. he

  3367. pays

  3368. the

  3369. price

  3370. and

  3371. that's

  3372. why

  3373. he

  3374. says

  3375. that

  3376. God

  3377. broke

  3378. down

  3379. the

  3380. dividing

  3381. wall

  3382. of

  3383. hostility

  3384. so

  3385. making

  3386. peace

  3387. in

  3388. Jesus

  3389. Christ

  3390. in

  3391. his

  3392. flesh

  3393. making

  3394. peace

  3395. between

  3396. God

  3397. and

  3398. man

  3399. and

  3400. making

  3401. peace

  3402. between

  3403. Jews

  3404. and

  3405. Gentiles

  3406. between

  3407. every

  3408. groups

  3409. of

  3410. people

  3411. it's

  3412. when

  3413. we

  3414. are

  3415. born

  3416. again

  3417. by

  3418. the

  3419. Holy

  3420. Spirit

  3421. as

  3422. children

  3423. of

  3424. God

  3425. in

  3426. this

  3427. way

  3428. that

  3429. we

  3430. love

  3431. God

  3432. and

  3433. obey

  3434. his

  3435. commandments

  3436. we

  3437. begin

  3438. to

  3439. take

  3440. on

  3441. a

  3442. family

  3443. resemblance

  3444. as

  3445. we

  3446. have

  3447. the

  3448. Holy

  3449. Spirit

  3450. in

  3451. us

  3452. as

  3453. we

  3454. are

  3455. adopted

  3456. into

  3457. his

  3458. family

  3459. and

  3460. that's

  3461. why

  3462. he

  3463. says

  3464. blessed

  3465. are

  3466. the

  3467. peacemakers

  3468. for

  3469. they

  3470. shall

  3471. be

  3472. called

  3473. sons

  3474. of

  3475. God

  3476. the

  3477. family

  3478. resemblance

  3479. of

  3480. peacemaking

  3481. because

  3482. God

  3483. the

  3484. Father

  3485. is

  3486. a

  3487. peacemaking

  3488. God

  3489. that

  3490. family

  3491. resemblance

  3492. takes

  3493. hold

  3494. of

  3495. us

  3496. and

  3497. we

  3498. become

  3499. !

  3500. peacemakers

  3501. and

  3502. that

  3503. family

  3504. resemblance

  3505. will be

  3506. taken

  3507. into

  3508. account

  3509. at the

  3510. final

  3511. judgment

  3512. that's

  3513. why

  3514. he

  3515. says

  3516. they

  3517. shall

  3518. be

  3519. called

  3520. sons

  3521. of

  3522. God

  3523. all

  3524. this

  3525. is

  3526. from

  3527. God

  3528. he says

  3529. in 2nd

  3530. Corinthians 5

  3531. 18-20

  3532. who

  3533. through Christ

  3534. reconciled us

  3535. to himself

  3536. and gave us

  3537. the ministry

  3538. of reconciliation

  3539. that is

  3540. in Christ

  3541. God was

  3542. reconciling the

  3543. world to

  3544. himself

  3545. not counting

  3546. their trespasses

  3547. against them

  3548. and entrusting

  3549. to us

  3550. the message

  3551. of reconciliation

  3552. therefore we

  3553. are ambassadors

  3554. for Christ

  3555. God making

  3556. his appeal

  3557. through us

  3558. we are

  3559. all of us

  3560. believers

  3561. in Jesus

  3562. Christ

  3563. are ambassadors

  3564. of reconciliation

  3565. because God

  3566. has reconciled

  3567. us to himself

  3568. in Jesus

  3569. Christ

  3570. we are all

  3571. ambassadors

  3572. of peace

  3573. because God

  3574. has made peace

  3575. with us

  3576. in Jesus

  3577. Christ

  3578. this is not

  3579. what the world

  3580. prizes

  3581. our world

  3582. is fascinated

  3583. with warriors

  3584. and conquerors

  3585. not with peacemakers

  3586. throughout history

  3587. people who

  3588. receive the

  3589. greatest acclaim

  3590. and the most

  3591. laurels

  3592. have not been

  3593. peacemakers

  3594. but the conquerors

  3595. and the warriors

  3596. in the absence

  3597. of war

  3598. it's the athletes

  3599. because sports

  3600. have early roots

  3601. in combat

  3602. and warfare

  3603. in our world

  3604. the warriors

  3605. and conquerors

  3606. are treated

  3607. like sons

  3608. of God

  3609. they are reified

  3610. and even deified

  3611. and given

  3612. their own statues

  3613. in their honor

  3614. and placed

  3615. in the hall

  3616. of fame

  3617. but Jesus

  3618. tells us

  3619. blessed are

  3620. the peacemakers

  3621. for they

  3622. shall be called

  3623. sons of God

  3624. by following

  3625. a crucified

  3626. savior

  3627. and by making

  3628. peace

  3629. all around us

  3630. through humility

  3631. and meekness

  3632. we radically

  3633. subvert

  3634. the politics

  3635. of power

  3636. and dominion

  3637. which rules

  3638. our world

  3639. that's the path

  3640. of the cross

3641. and that is our path

  3642. not the path

  3643. of the revolution

  3644. path of the cross

  3645. let's pray together

  3646. heavenly father

  3647. how can it be

  3648. that when all

  3649. the fault

  3650. lies with us

  3651. all the sin

  3652. lies with us

  3653. that you took

  3654. the initiative

  3655. to make peace

  3656. with us

  3657. how can it be

  3658. father

  3659. that

  3660. that you would

  3661. give

  3662. not just

  3663. your

  3664. things

  3665. but your only

  3666. son

  3667. Jesus Christ

  3668. as a peace

  3669. child

  3670. so you might

  3671. make us

  3672. your children

  3673. oh lord

  3674. help us

  3675. to never

  3676. lose sight

  3677. of your

  3678. amazing

  3679. grace

  3680. and help

  3681. us

  3682. to take

  3683. on more

  3684. and more

  3685. that family

  3686. resemblance

  3687. of peacemaking

  3688. this world

  3689. desperately

  3690. needs it

  3691. in Jesus

  3692. name we

  3693. pray

  3694. amen

  3695. I
