  1. If you don't know me, my name is Sean. I'm one of the pastors of Trinity Cambridge Church,

  2. and it is my great joy and privilege to preach God's word to you this morning.

  3. Please turn with me in your Bibles to Matthew chapter 5. We've been in the Beatitudes for the

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  4. last six weeks. This is the seventh and final week we are in the Beatitudes.

  5. We'll be focusing today on the eighth Beatitude from verses 10 to 12, but I will read the entire

  6. section verses 1 to 12 before we start. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  7. Heavenly Father, we confess that living in this world sometimes can feel like

  8. being on a treadmill where the course of this world is always seeking to take us backwards.

  9. So Lord, we seek this morning to be addressed by you from your word,

  10. that we may not be conformed to the patterns of this world, but instead be transformed by the

  11. renewal of our mind. Increase in our hearts this morning through the ministry of your word,

  12. a heavenly mindset that our deepest longings would be for the hope of eternity, not

  13. for the comforts and pleasures of this world.

  14. Make us a people who would be glad and rejoice to be persecuted for the name of Jesus Christ.

  15. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  16. If you are able, please stand to honor God as we read from his word.

  17. Matthew 5, 1 to 12.

  18. Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.

  19. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

  20. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  21. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

  22. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

  23. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

  24. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

  25. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

  26. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

  27. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  28. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

  29. Blessed are the people of heaven, for they shall be called sons of God.

  30. Biblical truth that has been borne out by thousands of years of history.

  31. Speaking of the persecutions and the sufferings that Christians endure, and speaking of the persecutions that he himself endured,

  32. Paul writes in 2 Timothy 3 verse 12,

    2 Timothy 3:12

  33. Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

  34. not some but all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus and not might be persecuted but

  35. will be persecuted because of the universality and the inevitability of persecution for Christians

  36. all over the world it is necessary for us to be prepared by this eighth and last beatitude

  37. Jesus means to comfort us and to console us blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness

  38. sake for theirs is the kingdom of heaven if you are persecuted for righteousness sake then you are

  39. not to be pitied you are to be envied because you are the happy fortunate blessed one how so Jesus

  40. teaches us that all who see Christ's kingdom and his righteousness will be persecuted but we can

  41. rejoice for our reward is great in heaven so first we'll talk about the reality of persecution secondly

  42. about the reason for persecution namely righteousness and thirdly we'll talk about the response to

  43. persecution rejoicing first I want to convince you of the reality of persecution apart from the tens of

  44. thousands of Christians who were killed under the Roman Empire some of which is recorded in our New

  45. Testament there have been countless more Christians killed for their faith and I've shared this with you

  46. on multiple occasions four million Christians were killed by Genghis Khan four million by Tamerlane 1.2

  47. million Armenians most of whom were Christians were killed by the Ottoman Empire and if you think that's

  48. a long long time ago in a far away place 20th century was the worst scholars estimate about 12 million

  49. Christians were killed under the Soviet Union 106,300 Christian pastors were were killed in Russia alone

  50. scholars estimate that Christians who died from secular anti-religious violence in the 20th century number

  51. over 25 million worldwide which is more than all the previous years in church history combined

  52. according to open doors USA and I think I have a graphic to show for this hundreds of millions of

  53. Christians face extreme persecution in countries like North Korea Somalia Yemen Eritrea Libya Nigeria

  54. Pakistan Iran Afghanistan Sudan and India one in seven Christians are persecuted worldwide

  55. one in five in five in Africa and two in five in Asia last year alone four thousand seven hundred and

  56. forty six sorry four thousand four hundred and seventy six Christians were murdered seven thousand

  57. six hundred and seventy nine churches or church properties were attacked four thousand seven hundred and

  58. forty four Christians were imprisoned for their faith

  59. now I readily concede that the persecution in the US is not as intense as the persecutions elsewhere in the world

  60. but that doesn't mean that there aren't milder forms of persecution even here it's not only being stoned to death

  61. that counts as persecution he says in verse 11 blessed are you when others revile you persecute you and utter all

  62. kinds of evil against you falsely on my account persecution can involve simply being reviled

  63. insulted excluded slandered

  64. and I know firsthand that that happens to Christians and I know secondhand from talking to many of you

  65. that people here in Cambridge and Boston often insult and speak ill of Christians

  66. you believe that the Bible is God's word

  67. you believe that this world was created

  68. isn't that so primitive hasn't science made God unnecessary to our understanding of the world

  69. you believe that marriage and romance should be between one man and one woman

  70. you believe that abortion is sin

  71. last month

  72. president Trump commissioned a new task force on eradicating anti-Christian bias

  73. and many Americans and media outlets collectively

  74. roll their eyes

  75. they openly wondered

  76. Christianity is the largest religion in the world

  77. and largest religion in the U.S.

  78. how can there possibly be anti-Christian bias in the United States of America

  79. I can understand why people think that way but if you think that way you are mistaken

  80. the fact that some political elites invoke God's name and Christianity to get votes from Christians

  81. doesn't mean that they are actually Christians

  82. for the true Christians who subscribe to the historic biblical faith

  83. growing anti-Christian bias has been obvious for many years

  84. Aaron Wren is a cultural analyst and an author of the book Life in the Negative World

  85. Confronting Challenges in an Anti-Christian Culture

  86. his book has been featured on many national platforms including liberal media outlets

  87. that usually don't cover such topics like the New York Times

  88. he describes the years leading up to 1994 as the positive world

  89. when being a Christian was a net social positive

  90. and Christian moral norms were pervasive and upheld in society

  91. this was the time of the moral majority and the Christian religious right

  92. that dominated the culture wars and the politics

  93. and then he describes 1994 to 2014 as the neutral world

  94. when society increasingly took a neutral stance toward Christianity

  95. and traditional orthodox Bible-based Christianity became one of many religious options

  96. in a pluralistic world

  97. it neither enjoyed broad support nor was it widely opposed by the culture

  98. starting in about 2014

  99. shortly before 2015 Obergefell vs. Hoge's legalized same-sex marriage

  100. Wren argues that we entered the negative world

  101. where being a Christian is a social and professional negative

  102. particularly among elite circles

  103. like the ones that many of you guys are in

  104. this is when Christians being a Christian

  105. meant being associated with the bad guys

  106. Christian moral norms were increasingly viewed as harmful

  107. regressive and as a threat to the public moral order

  108. I can mention many concrete examples of this

  109. in 2011 Vanderbilt University banned 15 faith-based groups from campus

  110. for their refusal to follow their school's new policy

  111. of mandating that all student organizations must accept any student

  112. regardless of their religious beliefs or affiliation

  113. as leaders of their campus groups

  114. so a staunch atheist who opposes God

  115. and thinks that Christ

  116. maybe was a myth and a legend and didn't even exist

  117. can become a leader of the Christian campus group

  118. that was mandated by Vanderbilt University

  119. out of those 15 faith-based groups that were banned

  120. almost all of them were Christian groups

  121. with the few exceptions of some of the Mormon groups

  122. that were kicked out

  123. University of Iowa followed suit in 2018

  124. in 2014 Bowdoin Christian Fellowship was kicked off campus

  125. for upholding traditional Christian sexual ethical standards

  126. for its student leaders

  127. in 2017 when reformed Christian pastor Timothy Keller

  128. was selected for the prestigious Princeton Theological Seminary's

  129. prestigious Kuiper Prize for Excellence in Reformed Theology

  130. and Public Witness

  131. many students, alumni, and faculty of Princeton Theological Seminary

  132. protested because of Keller's commitment to complementarianism

  133. the belief that men are called to lead their households

  134. and that men are called by God to be elders and to lead churches

  135. despite the fact that that has been the historic view of the church

  136. for most of the last two millennia

  137. Princeton gave into pressure and rescinded the award

  138. despite the fact that Tim Keller has really been

  139. an exemplary, thoughtful, and compassionate

  140. public theologian for decades

  141. in Massachusetts

  142. in Massachusetts

  143. pro-life pregnancy resource centers

  144. many of them explicitly Christian

  145. that's where they get their pro-life convictions

  146. that try to help women in crises pregnancies face enormous political backlash and pressure

  147. Senator Elizabeth Warren and Governor General Healy are on the record for saying that they want to shut down

  148. every single one of these crisis pregnancy centers in Massachusetts

  149. and throughout the country

  150. since 2023 Massachusetts has been spending millions of taxpayer dollars

  151. to fund the campaign to steer women away from these crisis pregnancy centers

  152. and to other places where they can get abortions instead

  153. on Easter 2023

  154. an arsonist burned down a church building here in Cambridge

  155. persecution is very real, my friends

  156. it's worse in other parts of the world

  157. so let us not be caught complaining about persecution that we experience

  158. because it's really nothing compared to what most of the world experiences

  159. but exists here

  160. and it has existed everywhere in every age

  161. because that is what the Bible says

  162. that is the reality of persecution

  163. now let's look at the reason for persecution

  164. verse 10 tells us

  165. blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake

  166. sometimes I admit

  167. Christians are persecuted for being obnoxious

  168. or rude

  169. that's not what this verse is talking about

  170. even when we disagree with people

  171. we are commanded by God's word

  172. to not be quarrelsome

  173. to correct our opponents with gentleness

  174. if we are persecuted because we are

  175. disagreeable and quarrelsome

  176. we are not blessed

  177. as this verse talks about

  178. it says in 1st Peter 2 20

  179. for what credit is it

  180. if when you sin and are beaten for it

  181. you endure

  182. but if when you do good and suffer for it

  183. you endure

  184. this is a gracious thing in the sight of God

  185. if we are persecuted for our own wrongdoing

  186. and our own misbehavior

  187. then the consolations and the promises

  188. that this beatitude offers do not apply to us

  189. if we are maligned by people

  190. because we are violent and abusive

  191. or because we steal and are dishonest

  192. or because we meddle in other people's affairs

  193. then we should be ashamed

  194. says 1st Peter chapter 4 15 to 16

  195. yet if anyone suffers as a Christian

  196. let him not be ashamed

  197. but let him glorify God in that name

  198. that's the point

  199. if you suffer for being a Christian

  200. if you suffer for righteousness sake

  201. Jesus says in verse 11

  202. blessed are you when others revile you

  203. and persecute you on my account

  204. on account of your allegiance to Jesus

  205. then we should rejoice and be glad

  206. when we are persecuted

  207. what then is righteousness

  208. for which we are going to be persecuted

  209. in order to answer that question

  210. we need to again observe the structure

  211. of the Beatitudes

  212. that I have pointed out to you

  213. a few times before

  214. there are 8 Beatitudes total

  215. verses 11 to 12

  216. are an expansion of Beatitude number 8

  217. verse 10

  218. we know because of

  219. it's dealing with the same content

  220. and because of the change in the pronouns

  221. and this division is confirmed

  222. by the repetition of the promise

  223. theirs is the kingdom

  224. in verse 3 and verse 10

  225. in the first Beatitude

  226. and the last Beatitude

  227. this is the only repeated promise

  228. and it serves to bracket

  229. the Beatitude together as a unit

  230. as a single unit

  231. and once we recognize

  232. that there are 8 Beatitudes

  233. we also can see

  234. that there are 2 distinct halves

  235. because the last Beatitude

  236. of each half

  237. mentions the word righteousness

  238. in verse 6 and verse 10

  239. verse 6 is

  240. blessed are those who hunger

  241. and thirst for righteousness

  242. meaning those who lack righteousness

  243. but long for righteousness

  244. and then verse 10 says

  245. blessed are those who are persecuted

  246. for righteousness sake

  247. meaning those who are now

  248. full of righteousness

  249. and are persecuted on account of it

  250. so this emptiness

  251. and fullness

  252. capture the themes

  253. of the two halves

  254. of the Beatitudes

  255. the first four Beatitudes

  256. deal with emptiness

  257. being poor in spirit

  258. mourning

  259. being meek

  260. those who hunger

  261. and thirst for righteousness

  262. and then the second half

  263. deals with being full

  264. being full of mercy

  265. being pure in heart

  266. full of your devotion

  267. to God

  268. purity in heart

  269. being a peacemaker

  270. because your peace

  271. that you have from God

  272. in Christ

  273. overflows toward others

  274. and lastly

  275. being full of righteousness

  276. being persecuted

  277. for righteousness sake

  278. so then

  279. being persecuted

  280. for righteousness sake

  281. entails

  282. all of the preceding Beatitudes

  283. righteousness

  284. is described

  285. it describes

  286. the kind of people

  287. that are described

  288. in the Beatitudes

  289. they are the righteous ones

  290. we are persecuted

  291. for being merciful

  292. when the world

  293. wants us to

  294. resist

  295. governing authorities

  296. we don't like

  297. but instead

  298. we submit to them

  299. as the Bible

  300. commands us to

  301. and then we're reviled

  302. for it

  303. when the world

  304. wants us to

  305. retaliate

  306. against people

  307. who wrong us

  308. who believe

  309. wrong

  310. offensive things

  311. and then we forgive them

  312. and we show them mercy

  313. we're despised

  314. by the world

  315. and condemned

  316. as weak people

  317. we are persecuted

  318. for being pure in heart

  319. because to be pure in heart

  320. is to will

  321. one thing

  322. namely to please God

  323. the world

  324. instead

  325. wants us to

  326. conform

  327. to its sinful patterns

  328. to its own ideas

  329. of morality

  330. and the public good

  331. but the people of God

  332. take another course

  333. and for that reason

  334. we are spoken of

  335. as evil

  336. we are persecuted

  337. for being peacemakers

  338. when we proclaim

  339. the gospel of peace

  340. and invite people

  341. to be reconciled

  342. to God

  343. people who are

  344. by their very nature

  345. enemies of God

  346. reject us

  347. the world

  348. wants us

  349. to point fingers

  350. and pass blame

  351. on our enemies

  352. but when we instead

  353. obey Jesus' command

  354. and love our enemies

  355. and pray for them

  356. as the Bible commands us

  357. then we are slandered

  358. as a result

  359. Jesus summarizes

  360. in Matthew 5

  361. 17 to 20

  362. that righteousness

  363. in short

  364. is obedience

  365. to all of the scriptures

  366. all of the commands

  367. of God

  368. which Jesus expounds

  369. and fulfills

  370. !

  371. in the rest of the Sermon

  372. on the mount

  373. but why would people

  374. persecute us

  375. for righteousness?

  376. why do they do that?

  377. isn't righteousness

  378. a good thing?

  379. isn't righteousness

  380. eminently reasonable

  381. and doesn't it promote

  382. human flourishing?

  383. yes it does

  384. so why does the world

  385. persecute us for it?

  386. because the sinful world

  387. is diametrically

  388. opposed to God

  389. and scriptures

  390. make that clear

  391. John 3

  392. 19 to 21

  393. is illuminating

  394. and this is the judgment

  395. the light has come

  396. into the world

  397. and people love

  398. the darkness

  399. rather than the light

  400. because their works

  401. were evil

  402. for everyone

  403. who does wicked things

  404. hates the light

  405. and does not come

  406. to the light

  407. lest his works

  408. should be exposed

  409. but whoever does

  410. what is true

  411. comes to the light

  412. so that it may be

  413. clearly seen

  414. that his works

  415. have been carried out

  416. in God

  417. when you are in darkness

  418. your eyes dilate

  419. right

  420. to allow in

  421. as much light

  422. as possible

  423. because that's the only way

  424. you can see anything

  425. in the dark

  426. but then as soon as

  427. you step out

  428. into a brightly lit room

  429. or out into

  430. a sunny day

  431. it's

  432. you can't open your eyes

  433. it's blinding

  434. because you can't handle

  435. the influx of light

  436. your body

  437. your eyes

  438. are still adjusted

  439. to the darkness

  440. in a similar way

  441. people who are

  442. accustomed to darkness

  443. and accustomed to sin

  444. cannot stand the light

  445. why do assaults

  446. and robberies

  447. rapes

  448. and murders

  449. all usually happen

  450. at night

  451. because people use

  452. the cover of night

  453. cover of darkness

  454. to do evil

  455. sinful people

  456. hate the light

  457. because they don't want

  458. their sinful works

  459. to be exposed

  460. and this is why

  461. Christians are persecuted

  462. for righteousness sake

  463. if you are a woman

  464. who dresses

  465. modestly

  466. and prioritizes

  467. the imperishable

  468. inner beauty

  469. of a gentle

  470. and quiet spirit

  471. rather than dressing

  472. scantily

  473. and provocatively

  474. putting on

  475. elaborate ornaments

  476. to attract attention

  477. to external beauty

  478. your female friends

  479. might call you

  480. a prude

  481. if you are

  482. chaste

  483. and refuse

  484. the sexual advances

  485. of a man

  486. who is not

  487. your husband

  488. then you might

  489. be called

  490. frigid

  491. or cold

  492. because the light

  493. of your chastity

  494. exposes the darkness

  495. of illicit sex

  496. you will be persecuted

  497. for righteousness sake

  498. if you are

  499. hanging with your

  500. bros

  501. and everybody's

  502. betting on sports

  503. and gambling

  504. and getting drunk

  505. and getting high

  506. but you refuse

  507. to do that

  508. you might

  509. get sober

  510. shamed

  511. I had to look up

  512. all these words

  513. because I didn't

  514. know what they were

  515. trying to stay relevant

  516. you know

  517. Google knows a lot

  518. because the light

  519. of your self-control

  520. and purity

  521. and sobriety

  522. exposes the darkness

  523. of debauchery

  524. and indulgence

  525. if there's an outcast

  526. family member

  527. that nobody

  528. in your extended

  529. family wants

  530. to talk to

  531. and they always

  532. work hard

  533. to work around

  534. to exclude them

  535. and then you

  536. extend a hand

  537. of love

  538. and reconciliation

  539. and invitation

  540. your family

  541. might resent you

  542. and call you

  543. disloyal

  544. weird

  545. holier than thou

  546. because the light

  547. of your peacemaking

  548. exposes the darkness

  549. of hatred

  550. and ostracism

  551. if you try

  552. to be a good

  553. steward

  554. of your financial

  555. resources

  556. and you prioritize

  557. simplicity

  558. rather than luxury

  559. generosity

  560. rather than

  561. splurging on yourself

  562. then people

  563. might call you

  564. frumpy

  565. and look down

  566. on you

  567. for lacking

  568. class

  569. or lacking

  570. style

  571. and so on

  572. this is inevitable

  573. those who live

  574. in darkness

  575. hate

  576. the light

  577. James 4

  578. 4

  579. says

  580. you adulterous

  581. people

  582. do you not

  583. know that

  584. friendship

  585. with the world

  586. is enmity

  587. with God

  588. therefore

  589. whoever wishes

  590. to be a friend

  591. of the world

  592. makes himself

  593. an enemy

  594. of God

  595. you can't

  596. have both

  597. you cannot

  598. serve both

  599. God and money

  600. you cannot

  601. serve two

  602. sovereigns

  603. you're either

  604. a friend

  605. of God

  606. and an enemy

  607. of the world

  608. or a friend

  609. of the world

  610. and an enemy

  611. of God

  612. brothers and sisters

  613. we are commanded

  614. in scripture

  615. to love

  616. and pray

  617. for our enemies

  618. we are not

  619. commanded

  620. to confuse

  621. our enemies

  622. for our friends

  623. 1 John 2

  624. 15 to 17

  625. says

  626. do not

  627. love the world

  628. or the things

  629. in the world

  630. if anyone

  631. loves the world

  632. the love

  633. of the father

  634. is not in him

  635. for all that

  636. is in the world

  637. the desires

  638. of the flesh

  639. the desires

  640. of the eyes

  641. and the pride

  642. of life

  643. is not

  644. from the father

  645. but is from

  646. the world

  647. and the world

  648. is passing away

  649. along with its desires

  650. but whoever

  651. does the will

  652. of God

  653. abides

  654. forever

  655. we do not

  656. belong

  657. to this world

  658. brothers and sisters

  659. we belong

  660. to another world

  661. to another kingdom

  662. to another king

  663. we do not

  664. follow the prince

  665. of the power

  666. of the air

  667. the ruler

  668. of this world

  669. Satan

  670. no we

  671. follow Christ

  672. the king

  673. who has authority

  674. over heaven

  675. and the earth

  676. the clearer

  677. our allegiance

  678. to Jesus Christ

  679. in our lives

  680. the fiercer

  681. the world's

  682. persecution

  683. will be

  684. for this reason

  685. if we're not

  686. facing any persecution

  687. we should take

  688. the opportunity

  689. to examine

  690. our lives

  691. I think there

  692. are several

  693. possibilities

  694. for what might

  695. be happening

  696. if we're not

  697. getting persecuted

  698. one

  699. it may be

  700. that we are

  701. worldly Christians

  702. you become

  703. conformed

  704. to the world

  705. instead of

  706. being transformed

  707. by the renewal

  708. of your mind

  709. there's very little

  710. friction between

  711. the world

  712. and us

  713. that's

  714. worldliness

  715. theologian

  716. David Wells

  717. puts it this way

  718. in his book

  719. God in the Wasteland

  720. worldliness

  721. is what makes

  722. sin look normal

  723. in any age

  724. and righteousness

  725. seem odd

  726. do you love

  727. the things

  728. of this world

  729. if the sins

  730. of this world

  731. look normal

  732. to you

  733. if they look

  734. good and pleasing

  735. to you

  736. and if the teachings

  737. of the Bible

  738. seem strange

  739. to you

  740. seem otherworldly

  741. to you

  742. that's a telltale sign

  743. that you'll become

  744. a worldly Christian

  745. if so

  746. you will not

  747. be persecuted

  748. because you are

  749. of the world

  750. and you must repent

  751. two

  752. it's a second option

  753. it may be that you are

  754. an incognito Christian

  755. a secret Christian

  756. that doesn't share

  757. his or her

  758. beliefs with anyone

  759. it is no coincidence

  760. that right after

  761. this last beatitude

  762. Jesus talks about

  763. not putting our lamp

  764. under a basket

  765. but instead

  766. putting it on his stand

  767. so that he can shine

  768. its light

  769. and give light

  770. to everybody

  771. in the house

  772. so that our good news

  773. that our faith

  774. in the good news

  775. and the good works

  776. that we do

  777. as a consequence

  778. might shine

  779. before others

  780. it's intentionally

  781. in that order

  782. have you hidden

  783. your Christian convictions

  784. under a basket

  785. does anybody

  786. know

  787. that you are a Christian

  788. at your workplace

  789. or at your school

  790. if nobody knows

  791. you're a Christian

  792. of course

  793. they're not going

  794. to persecute you

  795. for being a Christian

  796. or for being righteous

  797. and maybe that's

  798. precisely your intention

  799. but if you're doing that

  800. then you miss out

  801. on the comforts

  802. and the blessings

  803. of this beatitude

  804. three

  805. it may be

  806. that you are

  807. just not persecuted

  808. yet

  809. if you are living

  810. out your faith

  811. in public

  812. as we all should

  813. and your allegiance

  814. shows

  815. then I assure you

  816. that you are

  817. moving the needle

  818. in one direction

  819. or the other

  820. 1 Corinthians 1

  821. 23-24

  822. says this

  823. preaching Christ

  824. crucified

  825. is a stumbling block

  826. to Jews

  827. and folly

  828. to Gentiles

  829. but to those

  830. who are called

  831. both Jews

  832. and Greeks

  833. Christ

  834. the power

  835. of God

  836. and the wisdom

  837. of God

  838. if you proclaim

  839. the gospel

  840. you're doing

  841. either one

  842. of these two

  843. things

  844. you're either

  845. putting a stumbling

  846. block in front

  847. of people

  848. who will oppose

  849. God

  850. or you are

  851. preaching

  852. and demonstrating

  853. the power

  854. of God

  855. and the wisdom

  856. of God

  857. you're going

  858. to move

  859. the needle

  860. one way

  861. or the other

  862. so

  863. if you're

  864. proclaiming

  865. the gospel

  866. and you're

  867. not being

  868. persecuted

  869. it may be

  870. because

  871. the people

  872. around you

  873. that you're

  874. bearing witness

  875. to are

  876. being moved

  877. in the right

  878. direction

  879. because they're

  880. actually coming

  881. nearer to Christ

  882. or if they're

  883. going to reject

  884. Christ

  885. it's in a matter

  886. of time

  887. sooner or later

  888. you will be

  889. persecuted

  890. this is the reality

  891. that we must

  892. come to terms

  893. with

  894. if we're

  895. trying to

  896. win

  897. the affection

  898. and the approval

  899. of this sinful

  900. world

  901. we will

  902. not

  903. be

  904. a thriving

  905. Christian

  906. it's

  907. futile

  908. for us

  909. as Christians

  910. to try

  911. to win

  912. the acclaim

  913. and the

  914. applause

  915. of this

  916. world

  917. even if

  918. you get

  919. it

  920. I assure

  921. you

  922. it will

  923. not

  924. last

  925. very

  926. long

  927. Jesus

  928. told us

  929. that the

  930. world

  931. will

  932. hate

  933. us

  934. John

  935. 15

  936. 18

  937. to 20

  938. if

  939. the

  940. world

  941. hates

  942. you

  943. know

  944. that

  945. it

  946. has

  947. hated

  948. me

  949. before

  950. it

  951. hated

  952. you

  953. if

  954. you

  955. were

  956. of

  957. the

  958. world

  959. the

  960. world

  961. would

  962. love

  963. you

  964. as

  965. its

  966. own

  967. but

  968. because

  969. you

  970. are

  971. not

  972. of

  973. the

  974. world

  975. but I

  976. chose

  977. you

  978. out

  979. of

  980. the

  981. world

  982. therefore

  983. the

  984. world

  985. hates

  986. you

  987. remember

  988. the

  989. word

  990. that I

  991. said

  992. to

  993. you

  994. a

  995. servant

  996. is

  997. not

  998. greater

  999. than

  1000. his

  1001. master

  1002. if

  1003. they

  1004. persecuted

  1005. me

  1006. they

  1007. will

  1008. also

  1009. persecute

  1010. you

  1011. the

  1012. sinful

  1013. world

  1014. persecuted

  1015. Jesus

  1016. and executed

  1017. him

  1018. on

  1019. the

  1020. cross

  1021. and

  1022. if

  1023. we

  1024. are

  1025. to

  1026. follow

  1027. Jesus

  1028. we

  1029. also

  1030. must

  1031. take

  1032. up

  1033. our

  1034. cross

  1035. daily

  1036. and

  1037. follow

  1038. him

  1039. and

  1040. sometimes

  1041. you

  1042. will

  1043. even

  1044. be

  1045. persecuted

  1046. by

  1047. your

  1048. fellow

  1049. Christians

  1050. so-called

  1051. Christians

  1052. the

  1053. nominal

  1054. Christians

  1055. the

  1056. worldly

  1057. Christians

  1058. just

  1059. as

  1060. Jesus

  1061. was

  1062. most

  1063. intensely

  1064. persecuted

  1065. by

  1066. his

  1067. own

  1068. fellow

  1069. Jews

  1070. Luke's

  1071. version

  1072. of the

  1073. beatitude

  1074. sets up

  1075. a powerful

  1076. contrast

  1077. in Luke

  1078. 6

  1079. 22

  1080. to

  1081. 26

  1082. there

  1083. Jesus

  1084. says

  1085. very

  1086. similar

  1087. thing

  1088. blessed

  1089. are

  1090. you

  1091. when

  1092. people

  1093. hate

  1094. you

  1095. when

  1096. they

  1097. exclude

  1098. you

  1099. and

  1100. revile

  1101. you

  1102. and

  1103. spurn

  1104. your

  1105. name

  1106. as

  1107. evil

  1108. on

  1109. account

  1110. of

  1111. the

  1112. son

  1113. of

  1114. man

  1115. rejoice

  1116. in

  1117. that

  1118. day

  1119. and

  1120. leap

  1121. for

  1122. joy

  1123. for

  1124. behold

  1125. your

  1126. reward

  1127. is

  1128. great

  1129. in

  1130. heaven

  1131. for

  1132. so

  1133. their

  1134. fathers

  1135. did

  1136. to

  1137. the

  1138. prophets

  1139. and

  1140. then

  1141. he

  1142. continues

  1143. with

  1144. a

  1145. woe

  1146. but

  1147. woe

  1148. to

  1149. you

  1150. when

  1151. all

  1152. people

  1153. speak

  1154. well

  1155. of

  1156. you

  1157. for

  1158. so

  1159. their

  1160. fathers

  1161. did

  1162. to

  1163. the

  1164. false

  1165. prophets

  1166. when

  1167. the

  1168. sinful

  1169. world

  1170. speaks

  1171. well

  1172. of

  1173. you

  1174. and

  1175. loves

  1176. you

  1177. and

  1178. acclaims

  1179. you

  1180. that

  1181. is

  1182. not

  1183. something

  1184. to

  1185. be

  1186. happy

  1187. about

  1188. or

  1189. be

  1190. proud

  1191. of

  1192. it's

  1193. something

  1194. to

  1195. be

  1196. worried

  1197. about

  1198. such

  1199. a

  1200. person

  1201. is

  1202. not

  1203. to

  1204. be

  1205. pitied

  1206. but

  1207. such

  1208. a

  1209. person

  1210. is

  1211. not

  1212. to

  1213. be

  1214. envied

  1215. but

  1216. pitied

  1217. so

  1218. why

  1219. brothers

  1220. and

  1221. sisters

  1222. do

  1223. you

  1224. seek

  1225. the

  1226. affection

  1227. and

  1228. the

  1229. approval

  1230. of

  1231. this

  1232. world

  1233. we

  1234. set

  1235. ourselves

  1236. up

  1237. for

  1238. so

  1239. much

  1240. spiritual

  1241. stagnation

  1242. and

  1243. grief

  1244. because

  1245. we

  1246. want

  1247. the

  1248. world

  1249. to

  1250. accept

  1251. us

  1252. and

  1253. love

  1254. us

  1255. as

  1256. its

  1257. own

  1258. when

  1259. Jesus

  1260. tells

  1261. us

  1262. that

  1263. we

  1264. are

  1265. not

  1266. of

  1267. the

  1268. world

  1269. he

  1270. has

  1271. taken

  1272. us

  1273. out

  1274. of

  1275. the

  1276. world

  1277. so

  1278. do

  1279. not

  1280. be

  1281. surprised

  1282. 1st

  1283. Peter

  1284. 4

  1285. 12

  1286. to

  1287. 13

  1288. says

  1289. at

  1290. the

  1291. fiery

  1292. trial

  1293. when

  1294. it

  1295. comes

  1296. upon

  1297. you

  1298. to

  1299. test

  1300. you

  1301. as

  1302. to

  1303. something

  1304. strange

  1305. were

  1306. happening

  1307. to

  1308. you

  1309. but

  1310. rejoice

  1311. in

  1312. so

  1313. far

  1314. as

  1315. you

  1316. share

  1317. Christ's

  1318. sufferings

  1319. fiery

  1320. !

  1321. trials

  1322. tribulations

  1323. !

  1324. persecutions

  1325. the

  1326. hatred

  1327. of the

  1328. world

  1329. are

  1330. the

  1331. love

  1332. of

  1333. the

  1334. world

  1335. and

  1336. the

  1337. approval

  1338. and

  1339. the

  1340. applause

  1341. of

  1342. the

  1343. world

  1344. that

  1345. is

  1346. abnormal

  1347. that

  1348. should

  1349. surprise

  1350. us

  1351. that's

  1352. the

  1353. reason

  1354. for

  1355. persecution

  1356. righteousness

  1357. now

  1358. finally

  1359. let's

  1360. look at

  1361. the

  1362. response

  1363. to

  1364. persecution

  1365. rejoicing

  1366. when

  1367. we are

  1368. persecuted

  1369. for his

  1370. sake

  1371. Jesus

  1372. says

  1373. in

  1374. verse

  1375. 12

  1376. rejoice

  1377. and

  1378. be

  1379. glad

  1380. for

  1381. your

  1382. reward

  1383. is

  1384. great

  1385. in

  1386. heaven

  1387. for

  1388. so

  1389. they

  1390. persecuted

  1391. the

  1392. prophets

  1393. who

  1394. were

  1395. before

  1396. you

  1397. Jesus

  1398. is

  1399. not

  1400. here

  1401. telling

  1402. us

  1403. to

  1404. be

  1405. sadistic

  1406. people

  1407. that

  1408. enjoy

  1409. being

  1410. persecuted

  1411. for

  1412. its

  1413. own

  1414. sake

  1415. we

  1416. are

  1417. grieved

  1418. by

  1419. persecution

  1420. we

  1421. mourn

  1422. for the

  1423. persecutors

  1424. and pray

  1425. for them

  1426. because

  1427. they

  1428. know

  1429. not

  1430. what

  1431. they

  1432. do

  1433. but

  1434. we

  1435. rejoice

  1436. nonetheless

  1437. for

  1438. reward

  1439. because

  1440. your

  1441. reward

  1442. is

  1443. great

  1444. in

  1445. heaven

  1446. and

  1447. here's

  1448. the

  1449. secondary

  1450. reason

  1451. how do

  1452. we

  1453. know

  1454. that

  1455. our

  1456. reward

  1457. will

  1458. be

  1459. great

  1460. in

  1461. heaven

  1462. for

  1463. so

  1464. they

  1465. persecuted

  1466. the

  1467. prophets

  1468. who

  1469. were

  1470. before

  1471. you

  1472. we

  1473. see

  1474. numerous

  1475. examples

  1476. in

  1477. scriptures

  1478. of how

  1479. prophets

  1480. were

  1481. treated

  1482. they

  1483. were

  1484. persecuted

  1485. and

  1486. they

  1487. were

  1488. killed

  1489. but

  1490. these

  1491. prophets

  1492. Jesus

  1493. says

  1494. in

  1495. Matthew

  1496. 10

  1497. 41

  1498. will

  1499. receive

  1500. a

  1501. prophet's

  1502. reward

  1503. of

  1504. course

  1505. the

  1506. chosen

  1507. servants

  1508. of

  1509. God

  1510. the

  1511. prophets

  1512. of

  1513. the

  1514. Lord

  1515. will

  1516. receive

  1517. a

  1518. great

  1519. reward

  1520. and

  1521. so

  1522. if

  1523. we

  1524. are

  1525. being

  1526. treated

  1527. like

  1528. them

  1529. then

  1530. we

  1531. can

  1532. rest

  1533. assured

  1534. that

  1535. we

  1536. too

  1537. will

  1538. receive

  1539. that

  1540. reward

  1541. because

  1542. we

  1543. are

  1544. identified

  1545. with

  1546. them

  1547. we

  1548. share

  1549. their

  1550. company

  1551. and

  1552. their

  1553. reward

  1554. in

  1555. order

  1556. to be

  1557. Christians

  1558. rejoice

  1559. when we

  1560. are

  1561. persecuted

  1562. we

  1563. must

  1564. be

  1565. people

  1566. who

  1567. live

  1568. by

  1569. faith

  1570. and

  1571. not

  1572. by

  1573. sight

  1574. we

  1575. must

  1576. be

  1577. people

  1578. whose

  1579. longing

  1580. and

  1581. whose

  1582. hope

  1583. in

  1584. eternity

  1585. is

  1586. deeper

  1587. and

  1588. stronger

  1589. than

  1590. our

  1591. desire

  1592. for

  1593. the

  1594. comforts

  1595. and

  1596. the

  1597. pleasures

  1598. of

  1599. this

  1600. world

  1601. this

  1602. is

  1603. the

  1604. secret

  1605. to

  1606. faithful

  1607. perseverance

  1608. for

  1609. Christians

  1610. this

  1611. is

  1612. the

  1613. secret

  1614. to

  1615. endurance

  1616. till

  1617. the

  1618. end

  1619. keeping

  1620. in

  1621. view

  1622. of

  1623. the

  1624. end

  1625. Hebrews

  1626. 11

  1627. compels

  1628. an

  1629. impressive

  1630. list

  1631. of

  1632. faithful

  1633. saints

  1634. many

  1635. people

  1636. call

  1637. that

  1638. the

  1639. hall

  1640. of

  1641. faith

  1642. and

  1643. there's

  1644. a

  1645. common

  1646. thread

  1647. that

  1648. runs

  1649. through

  1650. all

  1651. of

  1652. them

  1653. and

  1654. binds

  1655. these

  1656. saints

  1657. together

  1658. and

  1659. that

  1660. is

  1661. faith

  1662. and

  1663. hope

  1664. Abraham

  1665. Isaac

  1666. and

  1667. Jacob

  1668. lived

  1669. as

  1670. strangers

  1671. and

  1672. exiles

  1673. on

  1674. the

  1675. earth

  1676. why

  1677. because

  1678. they

  1679. were

  1680. seeking

  1681. a

  1682. different

  1683. homeland

  1684. because

  1685. they

  1686. desired

  1687. a

  1688. better

  1689. country

  1690. that

  1691. is

  1692. a

  1693. heavenly

  1694. one

  1695. because

  1696. they

  1697. were

  1698. looking

  1699. forward

  1700. to

  1701. the

  1702. city

  1703. that

  1704. has

  1705. foundations

  1706. whose

  1707. designer

  1708. and

  1709. builder

  1710. is

  1711. God

  1712. and

  1713. then

  1714. it

  1715. mentions

  1716. Moses

  1717. why

  1718. did

  1719. Moses

  1720. refuse

  1721. to be

  1722. called

  1723. a

  1724. son

  1725. of

  1726. Pharaoh's

  1727. daughter

  1728. choosing

  1729. rather

  1730. to be

  1731. mistreated

  1732. with the

  1733. people

  1734. of God

  1735. than

  1736. to enjoy

  1737. the

  1738. fleeting

  1739. pleasures

  1740. of

  1741. sin

  1742. why

  1743. did

  1744. Moses

  1745. do

  1746. that

  1747. because

  1748. he

  1749. says

  1750. he

  1751. considered

  1752. the

  1753. reproach

  1754. of

  1755. Christ

  1756. greater

  1757. wealth

  1758. than

  1759. the

  1760. treasures

  1761. of

  1762. Egypt

  1763. for

  1764. he

  1765. was

  1766. looking

  1767. to

  1768. the

  1769. reward

  1770. in

  1771. heaven

  1772. on

  1773. what

  1774. are

  1775. your

  1776. spiritual

  1777. eyes

  1778. fixed

  1779. my

  1780. brothers

  1781. and

  1782. sisters

  1783. is

  1784. it

  1785. fixed

  1786. on

  1787. this

  1788. world

  1789. or

  1790. is

  1791. it

  1792. fixed

  1793. on

  1794. the

  1795. world

  1796. to

  1797. come

  1798. is

  1799. it

  1800. fixed

  1801. on

  1802. the

  1803. kingdom

  1804. of

  1805. earth

  1806. and

  1807. all

  1808. the

  1809. trinkets

  1810. that

  1811. it

  1812. offers

  1813. or

  1814. is

  1815. it

  1816. fixed

  1817. on

  1818. the

  1819. kingdom

  1820. of

  1821. heaven

  1822. and

  1823. the

  1824. eternal

  1825. imperishable

  1826. treasures

  1827. that

  1828. it

  1829. offers

  1830. this

  1831. explains

  1832. why

  1833. the

  1834. saints

  1835. of

  1836. old

  1837. rejoice

  1838. when

  1839. they

  1840. were

  1841. persecuted

  1842. for

  1843. Jesus'

  1844. sake

  1845. in

  1846. Acts

  1847. in

  1848. Acts

  1849. 5

  1850. 40

  1851. 41

  1852. when

  1853. the

  1855. are

  1856. beaten

  1857. for

  1858. proclaiming

  1859. Jesus

  1860. and

  1861. they

  1862. are

  1863. charged

  1864. never

  1865. to

  1866. preach

  1867. in

  1868. the

  1869. name

  1870. of

  1871. Jesus

  1872. again

  1873. as

  1874. they

  1875. are

  1876. released

  1877. they

  1878. go

  1879. out

  1880. rejoicing

  1881. it

  1882. says

  1883. that

  1884. they

  1885. were

  1886. counted

  1887. worthy

  1888. to

  1889. suffer

  1890. this

  1891. honor

  1892. for

  1893. the

  1894. name

  1895. in

  1896. 155

  1897. AD

  1898. when

  1899. Christian

  1900. pastor

  1901. Polycarp

  1902. was

  1903. being

  1904. burned

  1905. alive

  1906. for

  1907. his

  1909. in

  1910. Jesus

  1911. Christ

  1912. before

  1913. he

  1914. died

  1915. he

  1916. thanked

  1917. God

  1918. in

  1919. prayer

  1920. saying

  1921. that

  1922. he

  1923. was

  1924. counted

  1925. worthy

  1926. to

  1928. for

  1929. his

  1930. name

  1931. for

  1932. a

  1933. more

  1934. modern

  1935. example

  1936. Richard

  1937. Wermbrand

  1938. a

  1939. 20th

  1940. century

  1941. Romanian

  1942. pastor

  1943. he

  1944. was

  1945. imprisoned

  1946. and

  1947. tortured

  1948. under

  1949. an

  1950. atheist

  1951. communist

  1952. state

  1953. in

  1954. Romania

  1955. but

  1956. then

  1957. he

  1962. his

  1963. fellow

  1964. Christians

  1965. in

  1966. Romania

  1967. this

  1968. way

  1969. I

  1970. have

  1971. found

  1972. truly

  1973. jubilant

  1974. Christians

  1975. only

  1976. in the

  1977. Bible

  1978. in the

  1979. underground

  1980. church

  1981. and

  1982. in

  1983. prison

  1984. why

  1985. are

  1986. these

  1987. persecuted

  1988. Christians

  1989. so happy

  1990. why

  1991. do

  1992. they

  1993. rejoice

  1994. 1

  1995. Peter

  1996. 1

  1997. 167

  1998. tells

  1999. in

  2000. this

  2001. you

  2002. rejoice

  2003. Though

  2004. now

  2005. for a

  2006. little

  2007. while

  2008. if

  2009. necessary

  2010. you

  2011. have

  2012. been

  2013. grieved

  2014. by

  2015. various

  2016. trials

  2017. so that

  2018. the

  2019. tested

  2020. genuineness

  2021. of your

  2022. faith

  2023. more

  2024. precious

  2025. than

  2026. gold

  2027. that

  2028. perishes

  2029. though

  2030. it

  2031. is

  2032. tested

  2033. by

  2034. fire

  2035. may

  2036. be

  2037. found

  2038. to

  2039. result

  2040. in

  2041. praise

  2042. and

  2043. glory

  2044. and

  2045. honor

  2046. at

  2047. the

  2048. revelation

  2049. of

  2050. Jesus

  2051. Christ

  2052. trials

  2053. and

  2054. temptations

  2055. the

  2056. persecutions

  2057. that

  2058. we go

  2059. through

  2060. they

  2061. test

  2062. and

  2063. prove

  2064. the

  2065. gold

  2066. if

  2067. you

  2068. take

  2069. gold

  2070. jewelry

  2071. to

  2072. a

  2073. pawn

  2074. shop

  2075. sometimes

  2076. they

  2077. will

  2078. put

  2079. a

  2080. little

  2081. lighter

  2082. on

  2083. it

  2084. the

  2085. fire

  2086. to

  2087. distinguish

  2088. whether

  2089. it's

  2090. to find out

  2091. whether it's

  2092. fool's gold

  2093. or real

  2094. gold

  2095. if it's

  2096. fool's gold

  2097. and it's

  2098. mixed with

  2099. other kinds

  2100. of

  2101. lesser

  2102. alloys

  2103. less

  2104. valuable

  2105. alloys

  2106. then it

  2107. will

  2108. burn

  2109. it will

  2110. become

  2111. deformed

  2112. but if

  2113. it's

  2114. real

  2115. gold

  2116. it will

  2117. just

  2118. get

  2119. cleaner

  2120. and

  2121. brighter

  2122. that's

  2123. how

  2124. you

  2125. know

  2126. what's

  2127. pure

  2128. gold

  2129. it's

  2130. the

  2131. testing

  2132. of

  2133. fire

  2134. that

  2135. proves

  2136. the

  2137. genuineness

  2138. of

  2139. gold

  2140. when

  2141. we

  2142. are

  2143. tested

  2144. we

  2145. come

  2146. out

  2147. from

  2148. that

  2149. with

  2150. stronger

  2151. assurance

  2152. and

  2153. faith

  2154. in

  2155. that

  2156. our

  2157. faith

  2158. is

  2159. genuine

  2160. and

  2161. that

  2162. our

  2163. hope

  2164. is

  2165. sure

  2166. and

  2167. that

  2168. we

  2169. indeed

  2170. belong

  2171. to

  2172. God

  2173. and

  2174. that

  2175. we

  2176. have

  2177. a

  2178. heavenly

  2179. reward

  2180. to

  2181. look

  2182. forward

  2183. to

  2184. contrast

  2185. that

  2186. with

  2187. the

  2188. parable

  2189. of the

  2190. seeds

  2191. that

  2192. Jesus

  2193. tells

  2194. in

  2195. Matthew

  2196. 13

  2197. doesn't

  2198. he

  2199. say

  2200. that

  2201. there

  2202. are

  2203. seeds

  2204. that

  2205. are

  2206. planted

  2207. on

  2208. rocky

  2209. soil

  2210. and

  2211. because

  2212. of

  2213. the

  2214. rocks

  2215. because

  2216. of

  2217. the

  2218. shallow

  2219. ground

  2220. it

  2221. sprouts

  2222. up

  2223. very

  2224. quickly

  2225. because

  2226. it

  2227. doesn't

  2228. need

  2229. much

  2230. time

  2231. to

  2232. grow

  2233. root

  2234. into

  2235. that

  2236. shallow

  2237. soil

  2238. but

  2239. because

  2240. the

  2241. root

  2242. is

  2243. so

  2244. shallow

  2245. as

  2246. soon

  2247. as

  2248. the

  2249. scorching

  2250. sun

  2251. comes

  2252. out

  2253. the

  2254. sprouted

  2255. seed

  2256. withers

  2257. and

  2258. dies

  2259. and

  2260. Jesus

  2261. explains

  2262. the

  2263. parable

  2264. that

  2265. first

  2266. immediately

  2267. receive

  2268. it

  2269. with

  2270. joy

  2271. but

  2272. because

  2273. they

  2274. have

  2275. no

  2276. root

  2277. they

  2278. endure

  2279. only

  2280. for

  2281. a

  2282. little

  2283. while

  2284. and

  2285. when

  2286. tribulation

  2287. or

  2288. persecution

  2289. arises

  2290. on account

  2291. of

  2292. the

  2293. word

  2294. immediately

  2295. he

  2296. falls

  2297. away

  2298. persecutions

  2299. test

  2300. and prove

  2301. the

  2302. genuineness

  2303. of our

  2304. faith

  2305. and

  2306. so

  2307. that

  2308. is

  2309. the

  2310. lot

  2311. of

  2312. all

  2313. true

  2314. believers

  2315. and

  2316. we

  2317. read

  2318. about

  2319. this

  2320. in

  2321. the

  2322. assurance

  2323. of

  2324. pardon

  2325. in

  2326. 1 Peter 2

  2327. isn't

  2328. that

  2329. what

  2330. Jesus

  2331. did

  2332. for

  2333. us

  2334. he

  2335. was

  2336. reviled

  2337. and

  2338. he

  2339. did

  2340. not

  2341. revile

  2342. in

  2343. return

  2344. he

  2345. was

  2346. persecuted

  2347. he

  2348. was

  2349. driven

  2350. he

  2351. was

  2352. taken

  2353. to

  2354. the

  2355. cross

  2356. and

  2357. he

  2358. was

  2359. killed

  2360. Jesus

  2361. is

  2362. not

  2363. calling

  2364. us

  2365. to

  2366. come

  2367. to

  2368. a

  2369. place

  2370. that

  2371. he

  2372. hasn't

  2373. already

  2374. gone

  2375. to

  2376. Jesus

  2377. has

  2378. already

  2379. gone

  2380. there

  2381. and

  2382. imagine

  2383. if

  2384. Jesus

  2385. said

  2386. well

  2387. this

  2388. is

  2389. a

  2390. little

  2391. too

  2392. much

  2393. pain

  2394. I

  2395. will

  2396. not

  2397. go

  2398. through

  2399. this

  2400. we

  2401. would

  2402. all

  2403. but

  2404. instead

  2405. he

  2406. says

  2407. in

  2408. Hebrews

  2409. 2

  2410. that

  2411. Jesus

  2412. for

  2413. the

  2414. joy

  2415. that

  2416. was

  2417. set

  2418. before

  2419. him

  2420. endured

  2421. !

  2422. the

  2423. cross

  2424. despising

  2425. the

  2426. shame

  2427. it's

  2428. because

  2429. Jesus

  2430. endured

  2431. his

  2432. persecution

  2433. that

  2434. we

  2435. can

  2436. be

  2437. assured

  2438. that

  2439. there's

  2440. salvation

  2441. for us

  2442. and

  2443. we

  2444. can

  2445. hope

  2446. in

  2447. that

  2448. and

  2449. long

  2450. for

  2451. that

  2452. and

  2453. endure

  2454. with

  2455. faith

  2456. in

  2457. that

  2458. reality

  2459. are

  2460. your

  2461. eyes

  2462. set

  2463. on

  2464. the

  2465. joys

  2466. and

  2467. the

  2468. rewards

  2469. that

  2470. are

  2471. set

  2472. before

  2473. you

  2474. because

  2475. then

  2476. and

  2477. only

  2478. then

  2479. we

  2480. can

  2481. endure

  2482. our

  2483. own

  2484. cross

  2485. and

  2486. despise

  2487. the

  2488. shame

  2489. and

  2490. follow

  2491. a

  2492. crucified

  2493. Lord

  2494. when

  2495. we're

  2496. not

  2497. persecuted

  2498. we

  2499. wonder

  2500. am

  2501. I

  2502. a

  2503. worldly

  2504. Christian

  2505. am

  2506. I

  2507. an

  2508. incognito

  2509. Christian

  2510. am

  2511. I

  2512. not

  2513. living

  2514. as

  2515. a

  2516. witness

  2517. for

  2518. Jesus

  2519. can

  2520. my

  2521. faith

  2522. withstand

  2523. the

  2524. fires

  2525. of

  2526. persecution

  2527. but

  2528. when

  2529. we

  2530. are

  2531. persecuted

  2532. for

  2533. righteousness

  2534. sake

  2535. and

  2536. then

  2537. we

  2538. endure

  2539. and

  2540. we

  2541. persevere

  2542. through

  2543. it

  2544. and

  2545. we

  2546. come

  2547. out

  2548. of

  2549. that

  2550. then

  2551. it

  2552. is

  2553. clear

  2554. yes

  2555. now

  2556. I

  2557. know

  2558. clearly

  2559. which

  2560. side

  2561. I

  2562. am

  2563. on

  2564. now

  2565. I

  2566. know

  2567. I

  2568. am

  2569. on

  2570. the

  2571. side

  2572. of

  2573. the

  2574. prophets

  2575. of

  2576. the

  2577. Lord

  2578. now

  2579. I

  2580. know

  2581. that

  2582. I

  2583. am

  2584. with

  2585. Jesus

  2586. my

  2587. Lord

  2588. and

  2589. Savior

  2590. who

  2591. was

  2592. crucified

  2593. I

  2594. am

  2595. identified

  2596. with

  2597. him

  2598. and I

  2599. suffer

  2600. with

  2601. him

  2602. and

  2603. even

  2604. if

  2605. the

  2606. whole

  2607. world

  2608. were

  2609. to

  2610. frown

  2611. at

  2612. us

  2613. isn't

  2614. the

  2615. smiling

  2616. countenance

  2617. of

  2618. our

  2619. Lord

  2620. Jesus

  2621. Christ

  2622. enough

  2623. isn't

  2624. that

  2625. worth

  2626. all

  2627. the

  2628. persecutions

  2629. because

  2630. if we

  2631. suffer

  2632. with

  2633. him

  2634. and

  2635. if

  2636. we

  2637. die

  2638. with

  2639. him

  2640. then

  2641. we'll

  2642. also

  2643. be

  2644. raised

  2645. with

  2646. him

  2647. let's

  2648. pray

  2649. together

  2650. heavenly

  2651. father

  2652. shake

  2653. us

  2654. out

  2655. from

  2656. our

  2657. slumber

  2658. this

  2659. the

  2660. lowing

  2661. effect

  2662. of

  2663. the

  2664. pleasures

  2665. of

  2666. this

  2667. world

  2668. that

  2669. make

  2670. us

  2671. desire

  2672. and

  2673. seek

  2674. more

  2675. of

  2676. this

  2677. world

  2678. Lord

  2679. wake

  2680. us

  2681. up

  2682. Lord

  2683. shake

  2684. us

  2685. out

  2686. of

  2687. the

  2688. reality

  2689. shake

  2690. us

  2691. out

  2692. of

  2693. the

  2694. illusion

  2695. rather

  2696. the

  2697. delusion

  2698. that

  2699. we

  2700. can

  2701. be

  2702. chummy

  2703. with

  2704. the

  2705. world

  2706. that

  2707. we

  2708. can

  2709. become

  2710. one

  2711. of

  2712. them

  2713. that

  2714. we

  2715. can

  2716. be

  2717. loved

  2718. and

  2719. approved

  2720. by

  2721. them

  2722. oh

  2723. Lord

  2724. give

  2725. us

  2726. purity

  2727. of

  2728. heart

  2729. to

  2730. seek

  2731. and

  2732. to

  2733. will

  2734. one

  2735. thing

  2736. to

  2737. please

  2738. you

  2739. Lord

  2740. oh

  2741. Lord

  2742. prepare

  2743. us

  2744. so

  2745. that

  2746. if

  2747. we

  2748. were

  2749. to

  2750. be

  2751. given

  2752. the

  2753. privilege

  2754. of

  2755. suffering

  2756. for

  2757. your

  2758. name

  2759. being

  2760. persecuted

  2761. for

  2762. your

  2763. name

  2764. that

  2765. we

  2766. all

  2767. to

  2768. a

  2769. member

  2770. would

  2771. rejoice

  2772. and

  2773. be

  2774. glad

  2775. in

  2776. Jesus

  2777. name

  2778. we

  2779. pray

  2780. amen

  2781. to
