  1. It's so good to worship with you guys.

  2. Sometimes when I worship, on Sunday mornings, I'm just overwhelmed by God's love for me.

  3. ! And then as I look around, I'm overwhelmed by God's love for you.

  4. You are so loved by God, and that's reason enough for me to well up with love for you.

  5. And it's a privilege for me to be counted among you, to worship with you,

  6. and to get to now preach God's word to you.

  7. So please turn with me in your Bible to Matthew chapter 5, verse 27 to 32.

    Matthew 5:27–32

  8. Let me pray before we read for God's help.

  9. Heavenly Father,

  10. You know all things.

  11. You see all things.

  12. And Your word searches our hearts.

  13. And as we stand before a bracing, searching passage like this, Lord, we feel exposed, ashamed in our sin.

  14. I ask, Father, that the conviction of sin would not lead us to wallow in guilt and shame,

  15. but it would lead to godly grief and sorrow that leads to repentance,

  16. to transformation, to growth, to holiness and purity.

  17. And I ask, Father, that You would reveal more deeply the power of the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ,

  18. so that we walk away from this place assured and rejoicing in the full forgiveness and freedom that is found in Him alone.

  19. In Jesus' name we pray.

  20. Amen.

  21. If you are able, please stand as I read from Matthew 5, 27 to 32,

  22. to honor God as we read from His word.

  23. You have heard that it was said,

  24. You shall not commit adultery.

  25. But I say to you,

  26. that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent

  27. has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

  28. If your right eye causes you to sin,

  29. tear it out and throw it away.

  30. For it is better that you lose one of your members

  31. than that your whole body be thrown into hell.

  32. And if your right hand causes you to sin,

  33. cut it off and throw it away.

  34. For it is better that you lose one of your members

  35. than that your whole body go into hell.

  36. It was also said,

  37. Whoever divorces his wife,

  38. let him give her a certificate of divorce.

  39. But I say to you,

  40. that everyone who divorces his wife,

  41. except on the ground of sexual immorality,

  42. makes her commit adultery.

  43. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

  44. It's God's holy and authoritative word.

  45. Please be seated.

  46. An estimated 50 to 60% of married men

  47. and 45 to 55% of married women commit adultery.

  48. That means marital infidelity affects nearly half of all couples in the world

  49. or in our country.

  50. Nearly 50% of married couples get divorced

  51. and over 70% of second marriages,

  52. a second try,

  53. and then divorce.

  54. Adultery and divorce are both rampant in our sinful world.

  55. And I don't think it should surprise any of us

  56. that what is often at the heart

  57. and at the root of divorce and adultery

  58. is lust,

  59. which is what Jesus addresses in this passage.

  60. As the redeemed bride of Christ,

  61. we must fight both the adultery of the body

  62. and the adultery of the heart.

  63. That's the main point of Jesus' teaching here.

  64. And we're going to first talk about adultery through lust

  65. in verses 27 to 30,

  66. and then adultery through divorce

  67. in verse 31 and 32.

  68. In his overarching teaching about the Old Testament law

  69. in the preceding passage in verses 17 to 20,

  70. Jesus said,

  71. I have not come to abolish the law,

  72. but to fulfill them.

  73. And for I tell you,

  74. unless your righteousness exceeds

  75. that of the scribes and the Pharisees,

  76. you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

  77. Then in the following six passages,

  78. as I mentioned last week,

  79. Jesus gives us a series of six antitheses

  80. or contrasts where he uses the same formula.

  81. You have heard that it was said,

  82. and he will cite some Old Testament scripture

  83. or how the Jews understood and interpreted that scripture,

  84. and he will say,

  85. but I say to you,

  86. offering a contrast,

  87. a better and a fuller exposition

  88. and interpretation of that passage.

  89. Jesus is showing us through this series

  90. what true Christian obedience

  91. and righteousness looks like.

  92. This is the righteousness of the scribes and the Pharisees,

  93. but your righteousness must exceed that,

  94. and this is what Jesus shows us.

  95. We looked at the first antithesis last week,

  96. and we're looking at the second and third today,

  97. and he begins with that same formula in verse 27.

  98. You have heard that it was said,

  99. you shall not commit adultery.

  100. This time,

  101. Jesus is citing the seventh of the Ten Commandments

  102. from Exodus 20, verse 13,

    Exodus 20:13

  103. and Deuteronomy 5, 17.

  104. Adultery specifically refers to

  105. a married person being involved

  106. in some kind of sexual relations

  107. with someone who is not his or her spouse,

  108. or having sexual relations with someone

  109. who is another person's husband or wife.

  110. The Jews of Jesus' day

  111. correctly understood adultery to be sinful,

  112. and they believed that it was forbidden by God's word.

  113. However, they defined adultery so narrowly

  114. and thereby circumscribed and limited this law,

  115. the scope of this law,

  116. that it lost the true force and the heart

  117. and the spirit of the law.

  118. So in verse 28,

  119. Jesus gets to the heart of the seventh commandment

  120. and reveals its full scope when he says,

  121. but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman

  122. with lustful intent

  123. has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

  124. The Greek word for lustful intent

  125. simply means desire or longing.

  126. It's a neutral word that can be used

  127. for desire for good things

  128. as well as desire for bad things.

  129. When it refers to desiring and longing

  130. for something that is forbidden,

  131. something that belongs to another

  132. and is not rightfully yours,

  133. it is often translated in scripture as coveting.

  134. And the Jews should have already known,

  135. based on the Ten Commandments,

  136. that lustful desire is also forbidden,

  137. not just adultery,

  138. because the Tenth Commandment

  139. in the Ten Commandments

  140. is you shall not covet,

  141. and it says specifically,

  142. you shall not covet your neighbor's wife

  143. and vice versa,

  144. your neighbor's husband also.

  145. It is sinful to sleep

  146. with your neighbor's wife or husband,

  147. it's also sinful to desire

  148. or long for your neighbor's wife or husband.

  149. True obedience to God

  150. is not only external,

  151. but internal.

  152. It entails not only keeping our bodies pure,

  153. but keeping our hearts and minds pure,

  154. because out of the heart,

  155. Jesus says in Matthew 15, 19,

  156. out of the heart comes evil thoughts,

  157. adultery, sexual immorality.

  158. They originate in the human heart.

  159. Our sinful world appeals to this lust

  160. in innumerable ways.

  161. Sex appeal is a major selling point,

  162. remains so to this day in advertising and media,

  163. especially in fashion, lifestyle,

  164. and entertainment industries.

  165. Many influencers on social media

  166. are not shy about selling their product

  167. with visual appeal to get more clicks.

  168. Dating apps pander to instant gratification,

  169. and they promise casual encounters.

  170. The global porn industry,

  171. which some estimate to be worth

  172. up to $287 billion,

  173. which is more than Hollywood and NFL combined,

  174. inflames people's lusts every day

  175. to the tune of hundreds of millions

  176. of daily visits to porn sites

  177. and billions of visits per month.

  178. Studies say that 78% of men

  179. and 44% of women watch porn.

  180. This is not a male-only problem.

  181. It doesn't matter that it is

  182. pornified cartoons or manga or anime

  183. or a video game.

  184. It has the same adulterating effect

  185. on the human heart

  186. and the same deadly consequences

  187. in our lives.

  188. It's a pernicious lie,

  189. in fact, that porn is harmless.

  190. It objectifies women primarily,

  191. but also some men.

  192. It promotes sexual degradation,

  193. exploitation, and trafficking.

  194. It distorts real-life intimacy

  195. and relationships,

  196. creates unrealistic expectations,

  197. and makes it increasingly difficult

  198. for people to have real intimacy

  199. and real relationships.

  200. It erodes trust.

  201. It impairs people's capacity

  202. for genuine sexual intimacy as well.

  203. A study published in the journal

  204. Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity

  205. found that 70% of wives of sex addicts

  206. could be diagnosed

  207. with post-traumatic stress disorder.

  208. Another study reports

  209. that 56% of divorce cases

  210. involved one party

  211. having an obsessive interest

  212. in pornographic materials.

  213. In fact, when pornography

  214. is involved in a marriage,

  215. couples are twice as likely to divorce.

  216. Jesus was right.

  217. Lust is far from harmless.

  218. And don't think that lust

  219. always involves the eyes only.

  220. Sometimes it takes place

  221. entirely in the mind

  222. and in the imagination.

  223. Last year,

  224. a New York Times article claimed

  225. that a certain novel

  226. which talks about

  227. a middle-aged woman

  228. committing adultery

  229. and experimenting with open marriage

  230. is the, quote,

  231. talk of every group text

  232. composed of women over 40.

  233. I was a little skeptical.

  234. So this week,

  235. when I was preparing for this sermon,

  236. I checked the Cambridge Public Library

  237. for this book.

  238. I did not check it out.

  239. Don't worry.

  240. Even if I don't want to,

  241. I don't want anything to do with it.

  242. But even if I wanted to check it out,

  243. I couldn't check it out

  244. because the library

  245. has 260 hard copies.

  246. 260!

  247. This is Cambridge Public Library,

  248. not Boston Public Library.

  249. Cambridge Public Library,

  250. 260 copies all checked out

  251. with 349 people on the wait list.

  252. This is our city.

  253. There are 286 e-book copies

  254. of this book all checked out.

  255. 957 people on that wait list.

  256. 157 audiobook copies of this book

  257. all checked out.

  258. 501 people on that wait list.

  259. And that's just in Cambridge,

  260. a tiny city.

  261. Also last year,

  262. a popular collection

  263. of female sexual fantasies

  264. was published by an actress.

  265. That kind of literature

  266. that capitalizes on people's sinful lust

  267. is on the rise.

  268. Once again,

  269. Jesus is here exposing

  270. the pitfalls of legalism.

  271. Legalism is concerned

  272. with the letter of the law

  273. and not with the spirit

  274. or the heart of the law.

  275. Both Jews and Romans

  276. actually denounced adultery

  277. because they saw it

  278. as a violation

  279. of man's property rights

  280. and because they saw it

  281. as a threat

  282. to legitimate paternal lineage

  283. because it might raise questions

  284. about whether someone

  285. is a true heir or not.

  286. So they both opposed adultery.

  287. However,

  288. here's the catch.

  289. A married man

  290. was considered

  291. to be adulterous

  292. only if his female partner

  293. was a free woman.

  294. If he slept

  295. with a slave woman,

  296. a concubine,

  297. or with a prostitute,

  298. then there were no problems,

  299. no legal ramifications.

  300. He could do it

  301. as many times

  302. as he wanted.

  303. Fourth century B.C.

  304. Greek politician Demosthenes

  305. famously captures this reality

  306. in his saying.

  307. He says,

  308. we keep prostitutes

  309. for pleasure.

  310. We keep mistresses

  311. for the day-to-day needs

  312. of the body.

  313. We keep wives

  314. for the begetting of children

  315. and for the faithful

  316. guardianship of our homes.

  317. The Jewish position

  318. was unfortunately

  319. not too dissimilar

  320. at the time.

  321. Do you see

  322. how evil this is?

  323. to justify

  324. all manner

  325. of sexual sin

  326. and saying,

  327. well,

  328. it's not adultery.

  329. I haven't really

  330. crossed the line.

  331. Related to this,

  332. there was also

  333. a gross double standard

  334. at play.

  335. While husbands

  336. could sleep

  337. with any many concubines

  338. and prostitutes

  339. as they want,

  340. the wives could not

  341. because of the fear

  342. that they'll be impregnated.

  343. For example,

  344. in 1 Corinthians 6,

  345. 12-19,

  346. Paul rebukes

  347. reputedly Christian men

  348. for sleeping

  349. with prostitutes.

  350. So-called Christians

  351. were justifying

  352. sleeping with prostitutes

  353. saying,

  354. food is meant

  355. for the stomach

  356. and stomach for food.

  357. Likewise,

  358. what they were implying

  359. was the body

  360. is meant for sex

  361. and sex for the body

  362. and that's what I'm doing.

  363. I'm using what the body

  364. was made for.

  365. That's what God

  366. created the body for.

  367. There's nothing wrong

  368. with that.

  369. That's the kind

  370. of promiscuous culture

  371. into which Jesus

  372. is speaking into.

  373. And in John 8,

  374. do you remember

  375. the story in verses

  376. 1-11?

  377. The scribes

  378. and the Pharisees,

  379. they catch somehow

  380. a woman in the act

  381. of adultery.

  382. This woman is caught

  383. in the act of adultery

  384. and they bring her in

  385. and then they say this

  386. to trap Jesus.

  387. They say,

  388. now in the law of Moses,

  389. Moses commanded us

  390. to stone such woman.

  391. What do you say?

  392. If Jesus says,

  393. stone her,

  394. then they can get him

  395. in trouble with the

  396. Romans who did not

  397. give the Jews

  398. the right to capital

  399. punishment.

  400. But if he said,

  401. no, don't stone her,

  402. then they could paint him

  403. as someone who abolishes

  404. and nullifies the law

  405. of God as a law breaker.

  406. So they're just trying

  407. to trap him.

  408. But when you read

  409. that story,

  410. have you ever wondered,

  411. where is the man?

  412. Because it takes two

  413. people to commit adultery.

  414. And she was caught

  415. in the act.

  416. The man must have

  417. been right there.

  418. You only bring

  419. the woman

  420. to charge

  421. before Jesus.

  422. Rampant

  423. promiscuity,

  424. adultery,

  425. a double standard

  426. at work.

  427. That's the problem

  428. with legalism.

  429. You can be

  430. a legalistic Christian

  431. that obeys

  432. God's law

  433. in all of its

  434. outward forms,

  435. yet without ever

  436. having love

  437. for God

  438. in your heart.

  439. Legalism is concerned

  440. with legality

  441. out of

  442. self-preservation,

  443. out of self-interest.

  444. In contrast,

  445. true Christian obedience

  446. is concerned

  447. with pleasing God.

  448. What is God's will?

  449. What tends

  450. to God's glory?

  451. Legalism is concerned

  452. with the limits

  453. and the lines

  454. of obedience,

  455. of God's commands.

  456. True obedience

  457. is concerned

  458. with the heart

  459. and the spirit

  460. of God's commands.

  461. Once again,

  462. when it comes

  463. to sexual immorality,

  464. too many Christians

  465. ask,

  466. where are the lines?

  467. Where are the limits

  468. of God's commands?

  469. So that I can

  470. edge as close

  471. as I can

  472. to that line

  473. without crossing it.

  474. how physically

  475. intimate

  476. can I get

  477. with my boyfriend

  478. or girlfriend

  479. without crossing

  480. the line?

  481. Is kissing okay?

  482. Is petting okay?

  483. Can I cuddle

  484. and sleep next to them

  485. as long as we're

  486. not having intercourse?

  487. Can I cohabit

  488. with them

  489. as long as we have

  490. separate rooms?

  491. Why would you

  492. invite temptation

  493. into your life?

  494. Why would you

  495. inflame the lusts

  496. that are already

  497. strong enough

  498. in your life?

  499. How many times

  500. have people

  501. said this kind of things,

  502. these kinds of things

  503. to themselves?

  504. Well, I've been

  505. exchanging suggestive texts

  506. with my co-worker,

  507. but we haven't actually

  508. done anything.

  509. I haven't committed adultery.

  510. I've been exchanging

  511. long glances

  512. and flirting

  513. with this woman

  514. at the gym,

  515. but nothing ever

  516. really happened.

  517. Adultery of the heart

  518. happened,

  519. Jesus says.

  520. Have you ever

  521. scrolled through

  522. suggestive photos

  523. and videos

  524. on Instagram

  525. and TikTok

  526. skirting

  527. on the edges

  528. of propriety

  529. without going

  530. into full-blown porn

  531. and then

  532. justifying yourself

  533. saying,

  534. well,

  535. it's not porn.

  536. The idolatry,

  537. the adultery

  538. of the heart

  539. has already

  540. taken place

  541. in your heart

  542. when you look

  543. at others

  544. with lustful

  545. longing.

  546. love.

  547. If coveting

  548. is sin,

  549. if lustful

  550. desire

  551. is sin

  552. in and of

  553. itself,

  554. I'm about to say

  555. something

  556. controversial here,

  557. but I wouldn't say it

  558. if I weren't fully

  559. convinced that this is

  560. exactly what God's

  561. Word teaches.

  562. If lustful desire

  563. is sinful

  564. in and of itself,

  565. then that means

  566. homosexual desire

  567. and all kinds

  568. of other

  569. deviant sexual

  570. desires

  571. are also sinful.

  572. I singled this out

  573. because I have noticed

  574. a misguided tendency

  575. among Christian leaders

  576. and Christian authors

  577. to separate

  578. homosexual acts

  579. from homosexual

  580. desires

  581. and to justify

  582. the desires

  583. as long as

  584. they are not

  585. acted on.

  586. That's a grave

  587. mistake.

  588. Sure,

  589. is there a difference

  590. between temptation

  591. and sin?

  592. Of course,

  593. there's a difference

  594. between temptation

  595. and sin.

  596. We can be tempted

  597. from the outside in.

  598. It's not your fault

  599. that you're driving by

  600. and there's a billboard

  601. with a naked woman

  602. on it.

  603. In that case,

  604. that outside in

  605. temptation,

  606. Martin Luther's

  607. proverb applies,

  608. you cannot prevent

  609. the birds

  610. from flying in the air

  611. over your head

  612. but you can certainly

  613. prevent them

  614. from building a nest

  615. in your hair.

  616. When you're tempted

  617. from the outside in,

  618. don't linger

  619. on that temptation.

  620. Don't let that

  621. temptation take

  622. residence in your heart.

  623. Flee.

  624. But that's not

  625. the only kind

  626. of temptation.

  627. There is another

  628. kind of temptation.

  629. temptation that is

  630. from the inside out.

  631. James 1, 14-16

  632. says,

  633. but each person

  634. is tempted

  635. when he is lured

  636. and enticed

  637. by his own desire.

  638. Then,

  639. desire,

  640. when it has conceived,

  641. gives birth to sin

  642. and sin,

  643. when it's fully grown,

  644. brings forth death.

  645. When we are

  646. sexually tempted

  647. from the inside out,

  648. the old theologians

  649. used to call that

  650. concupiscence,

  651. it betrays

  652. our sin nature.

  653. It reveals

  654. that our desires

  655. themselves

  656. are not aligned

  657. with God's will.

  658. These desires

  659. incubate

  660. and ultimately

  661. give birth to sin

  662. which eventually

  663. when fully grown

  664. leads to death.

  665. If that's the case,

  666. should we not resist

  667. these desires?

  668. Should we not fight

  669. these desires

  670. instead of coming

  671. to terms with it?

  672. Why do people,

  673. why do some Christians

  674. call themselves

  675. gay Christians

  676. or same-sex attracted

  677. Christians,

  678. SSA Christians?

  679. The fact that

  680. so many Christians

  681. in the world

  682. consider that to be okay

  683. shows just how much

  684. homosexuality has become

  685. normalized

  686. and how worldly

  687. the Christians have become.

  688. I've never met Christians

  689. who identify themselves

  690. as adultery-attracted

  691. Christians

  692. or fornication-attracted

  693. Christians

  694. or BDSM-attracted

  695. Christians

  696. or zoophilic

  697. Christians

  698. or pedophilic

  699. Christians

  700. who would identify

  701. with such things.

  702. Why would we

  703. identify ourselves

  704. with something

  705. that is something

  706. that is disordered

  707. and displeasing

  708. to God?

  709. Because humanity

  710. is fallen

  711. and depraved,

  712. we have all kinds

  713. of ungodly desires

  714. that rise

  715. from within our hearts

  716. and these desires

  717. can feel

  718. very natural

  719. but that does not mean

  720. that they are

  721. right.

  722. when we're tempted

  723. by those desires

  724. we need to struggle

  725. against them

  726. fight against them

  727. not accept them

  728. and make peace

  729. with them

  730. and declare proudly

  731. that that's a part

  732. of who we are.

  733. Making sexual orientation

  734. or preference

  735. a part of your identity

  736. is Sigmund Freud's idea.

  737. It's not a biblical idea.

  738. Lustful desires

  739. not only lustful acts

  740. are sin.

  741. D. Marlon Jones

  742. is helpful here.

  743. He says in his book

  744. studies in the Sermon

  745. on the Mount

  746. but let me say a word

  747. about the subtlety of sin.

  748. Sin is this terrible thing

  749. which so deludes

  750. and fools us

  751. as to make us feel

  752. quite happy

  753. and contented

  754. so long as we have

  755. not committed the act.

  756. Yes, I say

  757. I was tempted

  758. but thank God

  759. I did not fall.

  760. That is all right

  761. up to a point

  762. so long as I am not

  763. too content with that.

  764. If I am merely satisfied

  765. with the fact

  766. that I did not do the thing

  767. I am all wrong.

  768. I ought to go on

  769. and ask

  770. but why did I

  771. want to do it?

  772. legalists are always

  773. trying to circumscribe

  774. and limit God's word

  775. so that they can claim

  776. I have kept it

  777. I did not cross the line

  778. I did not do the thing

  779. but that betrays

  780. the minimal obedience

  781. mindset that I have

  782. been talking about

  783. rather than the

  784. maximal obedience

  785. mindset.

  786. It betrays the fact

  787. that they do not

  788. actually see God

  789. is good and benevolent

  790. and that he has

  791. their good interest

  792. in mind

  793. rather they see God

  794. is stingy and begrudging

  795. always trying to

  796. stifle them

  797. and deprive them

  798. of the good things

  799. that the world offers.

  800. I have used this

  801. illustration before

  802. but if we see

  803. God's word

  804. and his commands

  805. as a straight jacket

  806. intended to stifle us

  807. and restrict us

  808. then we are

  809. going to try

  810. to wiggle out of it

  811. as much as we can

  812. and to push

  813. the boundaries

  814. as much as we can

  815. and sneak out of it

  816. as often as we can

  817. because we don't see

  818. God's word

  819. as good.

  820. But if you see

  821. God's word

  822. and God's command

  823. as a life jacket

  824. I'm clasping

  825. all the straps

  826. keeping it tight

  827. keeping it right

  828. at the center

  829. fitting snugly

  830. into God's plan

  831. and God's will

  832. because I know

  833. it's for my good

  834. because I know

  835. it's for my salvation

  836. because I know

  837. it's to preserve me.

  838. So instead of flirting

  839. with sin

  840. and skirting

  841. the edges

  842. of God's will

  843. I want to encourage you

  844. and exhort you

  845. to seek to live

  846. at the center

  847. of God's will.

  848. for those of us

  849. who do want

  850. to strive

  851. for that maximal

  852. purity and obedience

  853. Jesus gets very practical

  854. in verse 29 and 30.

  855. If your right eye

  856. causes you to sin

  857. tear it out

  858. and throw it away

  859. for it is better

  860. that you lose

  861. one of your members

  862. and that your whole body

  863. be thrown into hell

  864. and if your right hand

  865. causes you to sin

  866. cut it off

  867. and throw it away

  868. for it is better

  869. that you lose

  870. one of your members

  871. and that your whole body

  872. go into hell.

  873. The word

  874. causes you to sin

  875. is a translation

  876. of a word

  877. that literally means

  878. to cause someone

  879. to stumble

  880. which is a recurring word

  881. in the gospel of Matthew.

  882. In this context

  883. it means to make someone

  884. stumble

  885. into sin

  886. in such a way

  887. that they fall

  888. into perdition

  889. into hell

  890. fall away from

  891. the saving purposes

  892. of God.

  893. Jesus says

  894. it's better for you

  895. to lose

  896. one of your members

  897. of your body

  898. than for your whole body

  899. to be thrown into hell.

  900. The word for hell

  901. is not the word

  902. for Hades

  903. or that shadowy

  904. realm of death

  905. that is sometimes

  906. mistranslated

  907. as hell

  908. in the New Testament.

  909. This is the word

  910. Gehenna

  911. which is referring

  912. to the valley

  913. of Hinnom

  914. which comes from

  915. the valley of Hinnom

  916. the word from

  917. Gehenna

  918. because that was

  919. the area

  920. where sacrifices

  921. human sacrifices

  922. to Molech

  923. the idol

  924. of the Old Testament.

  925. And because it was

  926. such a desecrated area

  927. tradition says

  928. that people

  929. in Jerusalem

  930. went outside

  931. to the valley

  932. of Hinnom

  933. and burned

  934. all their garbage

  935. there.

  936. So there was always

  937. stink and fire

  938. and smoke

  939. rising up from the place

  940. which made it

  941. an apt picture

  942. of the eternal

  943. destruction

  944. and the eternal

  945. fires of hell

  946. that await

  947. the devil

  948. and his minions

  949. and those humans

  950. who follow him.

  951. So this is meant

  952. to be a shocking

  953. statement.

  954. Jesus is talking

  955. about lust

  956. right?

  957. So many of you

  958. in accountability groups

  959. have confessed

  960. the sin of lust.

  961. Jesus is saying

  962. if you don't fight

  963. this tooth and nail

  964. your whole body

  965. is going to be

  966. thrown into hell.

  967. Are you catching

  968. the drama

  969. of what Jesus

  970. is saying?

  971. Too many Christians

  972. think that

  973. the fight against sin

  974. is a friendly

  975. risk-free

  976. wrestling match

  977. between friends

  978. or something like that.

  979. They think that

  980. there are no

  981. real consequences.

  982. Sure,

  983. sin might hurt me

  984. and affect my life

  985. here and there

  986. but I'm saved

  987. and I'm eternally secure.

  988. sin, however,

  989. is under no such

  990. delusion.

  991. Sin knows

  992. that it's in a

  993. death match

  994. with you.

  995. It's trying to

  996. choke you to death

  997. when sin gets

  998. a stranglehold

  999. on the so-called

  1000. Christian

  1001. and then the

  1002. Christian starts

  1003. to wonder,

  1004. oh, ouch, ouch,

  1005. that actually

  1006. really hurts.

  1007. That's a little

  1008. overaggressive,

  1009. don't you think?

  1010. I mean,

  1011. it's a friendly

  1012. wrestling match

  1013. and then

  1014. eventually,

  1015. eventually,

  1016. your very life

  1017. breath is ebbing

  1018. out of you.

  1019. 17th century

  1020. English pastor

  1021. John Owen

  1022. famously said,

  1023. be killing sin

  1024. or sin

  1025. will be killing you.

  1026. If you make

  1027. peace with sin,

  1028. you're no longer

  1029. repenting of sin,

  1030. you're no longer

  1031. resisting sin.

  1032. The final result

  1033. is not

  1034. less sanctification,

  1035. it's eternal

  1036. damnation.

  1037. Why?

  1038. Not because

  1039. true Christians

  1040. can lose their

  1041. salvation,

  1042. but because all

  1043. true Christians

  1044. persevere in faith

  1045. and obedience

  1046. until the end.

  1047. That's how we know

  1048. they are true

  1049. Christians.

  1050. You know them

  1051. by their fruit

  1052. because the fight

  1053. for holiness

  1054. is the fight

  1055. for faith

  1056. because if you

  1057. really believe

  1058. God's promises

  1059. and God's word

  1060. that it is true

  1061. and good

  1062. and beautiful,

  1063. then it's going

  1064. to show in your

  1065. life.

  1066. Pastor John

  1067. Piper wrote

  1068. about this in his

  1069. book,

  1070. Future Grace.

  1071. He says,

  1072. A few years ago,

  1073. I spoke to a high

  1074. school student body

  1075. on how to fight

  1076. lust.

  1077. One of my points

  1078. was called,

  1079. Ponder the eternal

  1080. danger of lust.

  1081. I quoted the words

  1082. of Jesus that it's

1083. better to go to heaven

  1084. with one eye than

  1085. to hell with two

  1086. and said to the

  1087. students that their

  1088. eternal destiny was

  1089. at stake in what

  1090. they did with their

  1091. eyes and with the

  1092. thoughts of their

  1093. imagination.

  1094. After my message,

  1095. one of the students

  1096. asked,

  1097. Are you saying then

  1098. that a person can

  1099. lose his salvation?

  1100. This is exactly the

  1101. same response I got

  1102. a few years ago

  1103. when I confronted a

  1104. man about the

  1105. adultery he was

  1106. living in.

1107. I pled with him to

  1108. return to his wife.

  1109. Then I said,

  1110. You know,

  1111. Jesus says that if

  1112. you don't fight this

1113. sin with the kind of

  1114. seriousness that is

  1115. willing to gouge out

  1116. your own eye,

1117. you will go to hell.

  1118. As a professing

  1119. Christian,

1120. he looked at me in

  1121. utter disbelief as

  1122. though he had never

  1123. heard anything like

1124. this in his life and

  1125. said,

  1126. You mean you think

  1127. a person can lose

  1128. his salvation?

  1129. So I have learned

  1130. again and again

  1131. from first-hand

  1132. experience that there

  1133. are many professing

  1134. Christians who have

  1135. a view of salvation

  1136. that disconnects it

  1137. from real life and

  1138. that nullifies the

  1139. threats of the

  1140. Bible and puts the

  1141. sinning person who

  1142. claims to be a

  1143. Christian beyond the

  1144. reach of biblical

  1145. warnings.

  1146. I believe this view

  1147. of the Christian life

  1148. is comforting thousands

1149. who are on the broad

  1150. way that leads to

  1151. destruction.

  1152. The main concern of

1153. this book is to show

  1154. that the battle against

  1155. sin is a battle

  1156. against unbelief or

  1157. the fight for purity

1158. is a fight for faith

  1159. in future grace.

1160. the great error that I

1161. am trying to explode is

  1162. the error that says

1163. faith in God is one

1164. thing and the fight for

  1165. holiness is another

  1166. thing.

  1167. The battle for obedience

  1168. is optional because only

  1169. faith is necessary for

  1170. final salvation.

  1171. Jesus is being totally

1172. serious in verse 29 and

  1173. 30.

  1174. He's not being literal

  1175. but he nevertheless is

  1176. totally serious.

  1177. It's better to enter

1178. heaven with one eye than

  1179. hell with two.

  1180. It's better to enter

  1181. heaven a cripple than

  1182. hell with two whole

  1183. legs.

1184. How do we know Jesus is

  1185. not being literal here

  1186. because some people in

  1187. church history have

  1188. actually interpreted this

  1189. literally and have

  1190. carried out these

  1191. commands?

1192. Yeah, do you think you're

  1193. serious about following

  1194. Jesus?

  1195. Jesus?

  1196. We know it's not

  1197. literal because in verse

1198. 28 Jesus told us that

  1199. he's concerned about

1200. what's going on in our

1201. hearts, not just what we

1202. do with our bodies, with

  1203. lustful desires and not

  1204. merely with lustful acts.

  1205. We can't physically remove

1206. lust from our hearts, can

  1207. we?

  1208. I wish we could.

  1209. I wish they had

  1210. surgeons for that.

1211. I'd be the first to line

  1212. up.

  1213. Literally gouging out our

1214. eyes will not stop us

  1215. from lusting.

1216. I've used the example of

  1217. Ray Charles before, the

  1218. famous soul musician from

  1219. the 20th century.

1220. He was blind, but he was

  1221. famous, famously a

  1222. womanizer.

1223. He had no eyes to gouge

1224. out, but he was full of

  1225. lust.

  1226. Married and divorced twice,

  1227. many affairs, fathered a

  1228. total of 12 children by 10

  1229. women, 10 different

  1230. women.

1231. All that to say, Jesus is

1232. not telling us to mutilate

  1233. our flesh literally.

  1234. He's being figurative, but

1235. his command is no less

  1236. real and bracing.

1237. He's telling us to remove

  1238. decisively the things that

1239. cause us to fall, the

  1240. sources of temptations in

  1241. our lives.

1242. Don't read things or scroll

  1243. through things or watch

1244. things that you know will

  1245. inflame your lusts.

  1246. Well, but everybody's

  1247. watching that and talking

  1248. about that.

  1249. Everyone who is cultured

  1250. and educated reads and

  1251. watches that.

1252. Well, then be content to be

  1253. considered ignorant and

  1254. uncultured and uneducated.

1255. Be content to be excluded and

  1256. left out of those

  1257. conversations.

1258. That's the hot topic and

  1259. trending for everybody else.

1260. Be content to be not in the

  1261. know.

1262. It's better for you to lose

1263. one part of your body than

1264. for your whole body to be

  1265. thrown into hell.

1266. If your smartphone causes you

1267. to sin, get a dumb phone.

1268. If you're working from home is

1269. ripe for temptations, go to a

  1270. co-working space or to a

  1271. public library.

  1272. If your boyfriend or

1273. girlfriend is causing you to

1274. sin, break up with that

  1275. person.

1276. Seek counsel from a pastor.

  1277. If there's a flirty co-worker

1278. that is tempting you, ask me

  1279. move to a different

1280. department or quit the job and

1281. move to a new job.

1282. Well, that's kind of drastic.

  1283. No, that's so inconvenient.

  1284. Of course it's inconvenient.

1285. Losing your eye and your hand is

  1286. also inconvenient.

  1287. That's exactly Jesus' point.

1288. Why does he specifically say

  1289. right hand?

1290. Because the right hand is, for

  1291. most people, the dominant

  1292. hand.

1293. It's the more useful, more

  1294. needful hand.

1295. And right eye, I think, is

  1296. just paralleling that.

1297. He says, even if it's your

1298. right hand, the thing that you

1299. need the most to get around and

1300. to do the things you need to

1301. do, even if it's one of those

1302. most important things in your

1303. life, dear things in your life,

1304. precious things in your life,

1305. get rid of it if it's leading

  1306. you to sin.

  1307. Because isn't our eternal

  1308. well-being more important than

  1309. our temporal well-being?

1310. What good is it for a man to

1311. gain the whole world yet forfeit

  1312. his soul?

  1313. In 2019, a Nebraskan farmer

1314. named Kurt Kaser was working on

1315. his farm when he accidentally

1316. stepped into a running machine.

  1317. I think it was a cornhopper.

  1318. I don't know exactly how that

1319. works, but it was sucking him in

1320. slowly, and the machine was

1321. running, and he was stuck, and he

  1322. had no family around.

1323. He knew it would be a while

1324. before anybody came to the farm,

1325. and he knew that not before

  1326. long he would die.

1327. So he made a quick decision.

1328. He took the pocket knife out,

1329. and he amputated his own leg and

1330. freed himself from the machine.

1331. Do you think that's crazy?

1332. That is the only sensible thing to

  1333. do in that situation.

  1334. Why?

1335. Because he wanted to live.

1336. Do you want to live?

1337. Do you want to live forever?

1338. Do you want to have eternal life?

1339. Do you want to be in the kingdom

1340. of heaven and have eternal

  1341. fellowship with God?

  1342. Gouge out that eye.

  1343. Cut off that hand.

  1344. 1 Corinthians 6, 9-10 says,

1345. Do you not know that the

1346. unrighteous will not inherit the

  1347. kingdom of God?

  1348. Do not be deceived.

  1349. Neither the sexually immoral,

  1350. nor idolaters, nor adulterers,

1351. nor men who practice homosexuality,

1352. nor thieves, nor the greedy,

  1353. nor drunkard, nor redeemed,

1354. revilers, nor swindlers will inherit

  1355. the kingdom of God.

1356. If you have come to terms with

  1357. your sexual immorality,

1358. if you have reached a ceasefire,

1359. and you're not fighting sin

  1360. anywhere in your life,

  1361. you're not killing sin,

1362. you're no longer repenting of your sin,

1363. if you have troves of porn

1364. downloaded on your hard drive,

1365. if you know that you are in sexual sin,

1366. but you're not willing to change

  1367. anything about it,

  1368. you're staying in it,

1369. then you will not inherit

  1370. the kingdom of God.

  1371. Put to death, therefore,

1372. what is earthly in you,

  1373. sexual immorality, impurity,

  1374. passion, evil, desire,

  1375. covetousness, which is idolatry,

  1376. Colossians 3, 5.

  1377. Cut it off.

1378. Before I move on to the next point,

1379. I want to share a potential objection

1380. that some people might raise.

  1381. D. Martin Lloyd-Jones

1382. is insightful on this point again.

  1383. He says,

1384. but someone may ask at this point,

  1385. are you not teaching

1386. a kind of morbid scrupulosity?

1387. Is not life going to be

  1388. rather wretched and miserable?

  1389. Well, there are people

  1390. who become morbid,

1391. but if you want to know

  1392. the difference between them

1393. and what I am teaching,

1394. think of it in this way.

  1395. Morbid scrupulosity

1396. is always concerned about itself,

  1397. its state and condition,

  1398. and its own achievements.

  1399. True holiness,

  1400. on the other end,

  1401. is always concerned

  1402. about pleasing God,

  1403. glorifying Him,

1404. and ministering to the glory

  1405. of Jesus Christ.

1406. If you and I keep that

  1407. ever in the foreground

  1408. of our minds,

1409. we need not be very worried

  1410. about becoming morbid.

1411. All that will be at once avoided

1412. if we do it for His sake

  1413. instead of spending

1414. the whole of our time

  1415. feeling our spiritual pulse

1416. and taking our spiritual temperature.

  1417. You guys understand?

  1418. It's very wise counsel

  1419. from the doctor.

1420. If you have an overactive conscience,

1421. and you suffer from scrupulosity,

1422. get your mind off of yourself

  1423. and onto Christ

  1424. and onto God.

  1425. That's the key.

1426. Now to my second point,

  1427. adultery through divorce.

1428. This is a shorter point.

  1429. The topic of divorce

  1430. and remarriage

  1431. is more fully addressed

1432. later on in Matthew 19,

1433. so I'll reserve detailed treatment

  1434. until that point.

  1435. However,

1436. I do want to note

  1437. the connections

  1438. between verse 31 and 32

  1439. and verses 27 to 30.

  1440. Technically,

  1441. they are separate passages.

  1442. They're distinct

  1443. and tip that cease.

  1444. However,

  1445. they're related.

  1446. Follow along with me

  1447. in verse 31 and 32.

  1448. It was also said,

  1449. whoever divorces his wife,

  1450. let him give her

  1451. a certificate of divorce.

1452. But I say to you

  1453. that everyone

  1454. who divorces his wife,

  1455. except on the ground

  1456. of sexual immorality,

  1457. makes her commit adultery.

  1458. And whoever marries

  1459. a divorced woman

  1460. commits adultery.

  1461. Jesus is here

  1462. alluding to Deuteronomy 24,

  1463. 1 to 4,

  1464. which talks about

  1465. writing a certificate

  1466. of divorce

  1467. for the woman

  1468. in the event

  1469. that the husband

  1470. is divorcing her.

  1471. But Jesus presents

  1472. a contrast,

  1473. an antithesis.

  1474. He says,

1475. but I say to you

  1476. that everyone

  1477. who divorces his wife,

  1478. except on the ground

  1479. of sexual immorality,

  1480. makes her commit adultery.

  1481. To simplify it,

  1482. read that verse

  1483. without the exception clause.

1484. Cover up the exception clause

  1485. with your finger

  1486. and try reading it.

1487. Everyone who divorces his wife

  1488. makes her commit adultery.

  1489. And whoever marries

  1490. a divorced woman

  1491. commits adultery.

  1492. How is that so?

1493. Usually we only call it adultery

1494. if someone who is still married

  1495. is involved.

  1496. When a divorced person

  1497. marries another partner,

  1498. we call it remarriage.

  1499. But Jesus says

  1500. that this is tantamount

  1501. to adultery.

  1502. Why?

  1503. The assumption is

  1504. that the first marriage

  1505. is still binding

  1506. because it's a covenant

1507. that God has brought together.

  1508. Jesus' teaching

  1509. is consistent elsewhere.

  1510. For example,

  1511. in Luke 16, 18,

1512. everyone who divorces his wife

  1513. and marries another

  1514. commits adultery.

1515. And he who marries a woman

  1516. divorced from her husband

  1517. commits adultery.

  1518. Almost identical formulation

  1519. in Mark 10, 11.

  1520. Jesus is essentially

  1521. forbidding divorce.

  1522. Why?

  1523. Once again,

1524. it gets to the heart

  1525. of God's law.

  1526. Rather than merely observing

1527. the letter of God's law,

  1528. in those days,

  1529. men often divorced

  1530. their wives

  1531. for frivolous reasons.

  1532. One prominent

  1533. Jewish school of thought

  1534. associated with

  1535. Rabbi Hillel

  1536. taught that a man

  1537. may justly divorce

  1538. his wife

  1539. for something as trivial

  1540. as spoiling a meal.

  1541. I'm divorcing you today

1542. because you burnt my toast.

  1543. Legitimate.

  1544. That's what they said.

  1545. Josephus,

  1546. first century Jewish historian,

1547. writes in a cavalier manner

  1548. about his divorce.

  1549. He says,

1550. at this time of my life,

1551. I sent away my wife

  1552. being displeased

  1553. with her behavior

  1554. and then I took a wife,

  1555. a woman from Crete.

  1556. What often underlies

  1557. such casual divorces

  1558. and remarriages?

  1559. Lust.

  1560. Men in those days

1561. and both men and women

  1562. nowadays

  1563. game the system

  1564. by marrying,

  1565. divorcing,

  1566. remarrying,

  1567. divorcing,

  1568. remarrying,

  1569. divorcing,

  1570. remarrying

  1571. as often as their

  1572. fantasies

  1573. and fascinations

  1574. change,

  1575. thereby fulfilling

1576. the lust of their hearts

  1577. without ever getting

  1578. into legal trouble.

  1579. But Jesus here

1580. exposes the evil of that.

  1581. Why then did Moses

  1582. allow people to divorce?

  1583. Jesus answers

  1584. that exact question

  1585. in Matthew 19.8.

  1586. He says,

  1587. because of your

  1588. hardness of heart,

  1589. Moses allowed you

  1590. to divorce your wives,

  1591. but from the beginning

  1592. it was not so.

  1593. Divorce was intended

  1594. to be

  1595. a temporary provision

  1596. for a broken

  1597. and fallen world.

  1598. It was a concession

  1599. to the hardness

  1600. of the human heart,

  1601. intended to mitigate

  1602. human failure

  1603. and not to establish

  1604. the divine ideal

  1605. or standard.

  1606. If you have

  1607. a neighborhood

  1608. full of drug addicts

  1609. and because you

  1610. don't want them

  1611. to die from

  1612. contaminated syringes,

  1613. you put some

  1614. clean syringes

  1615. over there for people,

  1616. can those people say,

  1617. like,

1618. oh, I'm following the law

  1619. because I use

  1620. clean syringes

  1621. every single time?

  1622. No,

  1623. you're doing

  1624. illegal drugs.

  1625. It's intended

  1626. to mitigate

  1627. human failure.

  1628. That's what divorce is.

  1629. Not the actual standard

  1630. that you're supposed

  1631. to keep.

  1632. What's the actual standard?

  1633. Jesus says,

  1634. he quotes Genesis 2,

  1635. 24 in Matthew 19,

  1636. 5 to 6.

  1637. Therefore a man

  1638. shall leave his father

  1639. and mother

  1640. and hold fast

  1641. to his wife

  1642. and the two

  1643. shall become one flesh.

1644. So they are no longer

  1645. two but one flesh.

  1646. What therefore

  1647. God has joined together,

  1648. let not man separate.

  1649. God is the one

  1650. who joins a man

  1651. and woman together

1652. in a covenant of marriage

1653. and is not for man

  1654. to break it apart.

  1655. That still leaves

  1656. the exception clause

  1657. to make sense of.

1658. But I say to you

  1659. that everyone

  1660. who divorces his wife

  1661. except on the ground

  1662. of sexual morality

  1663. makes her commit adultery.

  1664. The exception clause,

  1665. I think,

  1666. according to my best

  1667. interpretation at this point,

  1668. is there to

  1669. exempt the husband

  1670. from the guilt

  1671. of making his wife

  1672. commit adultery.

  1673. In this culture,

  1674. in this part

  1675. of the ancient world,

  1676. divorced women

  1677. would usually have

  1678. no recourse for survival.

  1679. They would be forced

  1680. to remarry

  1681. so that they could

  1682. be provided for.

1683. And so when a husband

  1684. unjustly divorces her,

  1685. he would be guilty

  1686. of making her

  1687. commit adultery

  1688. because he forced her

  1689. into that.

  1690. But if the husband

  1691. divorced his wife

1692. due to her own infidelity,

  1693. then he does not

  1694. bear that guilt

  1695. of making her

  1696. commit adultery

  1697. because she was

  1698. already one.

  1699. So sexual immorality

  1700. or infidelity

  1701. does become

  1702. a sort of

  1703. grounds for divorce,

  1704. though nowhere

  1705. in the Bible

  1706. does Jesus ever

  1707. command divorce

  1708. in such situations,

  1709. and there can still

  1710. be forgiveness

  1711. and reconciliation

  1712. even after sins

  1713. as deeply damaging

  1714. as adultery.

  1715. Let me add one

  1716. slight qualification here

  1717. because I have met

  1718. some Christian therapists

  1719. in the past

  1720. who have counseled

  1721. Christians to divorce

  1722. their Christian spouses

  1723. because of their

  1724. sins of lust

  1725. and pornography.

  1726. And they would cite

  1727. this passage

  1728. and say,

  1729. well, adultery

  1730. is lust

  1731. and looking at pornography,

  1732. lust of the heart

1733. is adultery of the heart,

  1734. and here it says

  1735. adultery is grounds

  1736. for divorce,

  1737. therefore you should

  1738. divorce your wife,

  1739. divorce your husband.

  1740. And I've seen therapists

  1741. use this logic

  1742. and reasoning before,

  1743. but that's a specious claim.

  1744. In that case,

  1745. should we also institute

  1746. the death penalty

  1747. for sinful anger?

  1748. Because in the

  1749. preceding passage,

  1750. Jesus said,

  1751. if you're angry

  1752. with your brother,

  1753. then you have committed

  1754. murder in your heart.

1755. Does that make any sense?

  1756. No, it doesn't.

1757. Is there a single man

  1758. in the world

  1759. who can claim

  1760. that he has never,

  1761. not once,

  1762. looked at a woman

  1763. lustfully?

  1764. According to

  1765. that interpretation,

  1766. every Christian woman

  1767. in the world

  1768. should divorce

  1769. their husbands

  1770. because they're

  1771. all adulterous.

  1772. This is misguided

  1773. application of the passage.

  1774. Jesus is not

  1775. legislating civil laws

  1776. that should be enforced

  1777. by the courts

  1778. or the governing authorities.

  1779. He is teaching

  1780. a personal ethic.

  1781. Jesus is not

  1782. lowering the bar

  1783. for divorce.

  1784. He's just raising

  1785. the bar for purity

  1786. and obedience.

1787. Are you guys with me?

1788. What are we as Christians

  1789. to do with such

  1790. a high bar?

  1791. Only the most

  1792. naively optimistic

  1793. person,

  1794. Christian,

  1795. can read a passage

  1796. like this

  1797. and think,

  1798. okay,

  1799. pretty reasonable,

  1800. doable,

  1801. yeah, sure,

  1802. let me create

  1803. a checklist.

  1804. That's the point.

  1805. When you understand

  1806. God's holiness

  1807. and God's word

  1808. in its right place,

  1809. then you realize

  1810. you can never

  1811. be holy enough.

  1812. You can never

  1813. be pure enough.

  1814. You can never

  1815. be righteous enough.

  1816. This is not

  1817. meant to

  1818. put a hurdle

  1819. in front of you

  1820. and say,

  1821. okay,

  1822. this is doable,

  1823. now do it,

  1824. jump over.

  1825. No,

  1826. it's meant

  1827. to be so high

  1828. that you despair

  1829. of any chance

  1830. of you

  1831. clearing that hurdle

  1832. on your own

  1833. and instead

  1834. you turn to Jesus

  1835. and cling to him

  1836. for salvation.

  1837. salvation.

  1838. Maybe right now,

  1839. and I know

  1840. this is the case

  1841. because of the statistics

  1842. and because of many

1843. of you that I've talked to,

  1844. I know there's dozens

  1845. of you,

1846. if not scores of you,

  1847. who have sinned

  1848. in these ways,

  1849. who struggle

  1850. with these sins

  1851. and you mourn it

  1852. and you grieve it

1853. and you want to change

  1854. and you're having

  1855. a hard time change.

  1856. And maybe you feel

  1857. like that person

  1858. in Lauren's prophecy,

  1859. you feel like

  1860. you're in this bathtub

  1861. and you feel black

  1862. and stained

  1863. and you keep trying

  1864. to wash yourself

  1865. to the point

1866. of scraping your skin off

  1867. and you still cannot

  1868. get the stain off.

  1869. That is the reality

  1870. for all sinners

  1871. in the world

  1872. apart from Christ.

  1873. You will never

  1874. get it off.

  1875. We're like a

  1876. prostitute,

  1877. a whore

  1878. who is trying

1879. to come to a wedding.

  1880. The hair is disheveled,

  1881. the face,

  1882. the makeup's

  1883. all smeared

  1884. and the clothings

  1885. are all soiled

  1886. and tatter

  1887. from her harlotry.

  1888. How's she gonna

  1889. get married?

  1890. Who's gonna take her?

  1891. That's the church,

  1892. the bride of Christ.

  1893. And then we read

  1894. in Ephesians 5

  1895. that Jesus

  1896. loved the church

  1897. and gave himself

  1898. up for her

  1899. that he might

  1900. sanctify her

  1901. having cleansed her

  1902. by the washing

  1903. of water

  1904. with the word

  1905. so that he might

  1906. present the church

  1907. to himself

  1908. in splendor

  1909. without spot

  1910. or wrinkle

  1911. or any such thing

  1912. that she might be

  1913. holy

  1914. and without

  1915. blemish.

  1916. in the beautiful

  1917. picture of

  1918. the wedding supper

  1919. of the Lamb

  1920. and the bride

  1921. that's gonna be

  1922. married to Jesus,

  1923. the bridegroom.

  1924. What does it say

  1925. here

  1926. about the saints?

  1927. How does it

  1928. describe them

  1929. in Revelation 7, 14?

  1930. These are the ones

  1931. coming out

  1932. of the great tribulation.

  1933. They have washed

  1934. their robes

  1935. and made them white

  1936. in the blood

  1937. of the Lamb.

  1938. Did you guys

  1939. catch that

  1940. Psalm 51

  1941. that Lauren

  1942. shared from?

  1943. Cleanse me

  1944. with hyssop

  1945. and I will be

  1946. clean.

  1947. That's the Psalm

  1948. that David wrote

  1949. after he committed

  1950. adultery

  1951. with Bathsheba

  1952. and Nathan the prophet

  1953. came and confronted him

  1954. and saying,

  1955. you are the man

  1956. and he's broken

  1957. and heartbroken

1958. and that's what he writes

  1959. because he knows

  1960. that his only hope

  1961. of cleansing

  1962. is not in his

  1963. righteousness

  1964. but the blood

  1965. of Jesus Christ

  1966. and if you forsake

  1967. your own righteousness

1968. and you go to Jesus

  1969. and say,

  1970. with your blood

1971. I can be made clean

  1972. and your blood

  1973. I can be washed

  1974. as white as snow

  1975. then Jesus

  1976. puts that white

  1977. beautiful wedding gown

  1978. on you

  1979. and you get to

1980. hold your head up high

1981. and go to the wedding

  1982. supper of the Lamb

  1983. to be the bride

  1984. of Christ forever.

  1985. That's the good news

  1986. and it's only people

  1987. who believe

1988. and get that good news

  1989. who want to

  1990. be pure

  1991. in every way

  1992. who pursue

  1993. utmost purity

  1994. who want to remove

  1995. every blemish

  1996. every hint

  1997. of unfaithfulness

  1998. every hint

  1999. of infidelity

  2000. because you love

  2001. Jesus

  2002. your bridegroom

  2003. because you want

  2004. to please

  2005. your bridegroom

  2006. because you

  2007. would do anything

  2008. for the one

  2009. who gave everything

  2010. for you.

  2011. Let's pray

  2012. that it would be

  2013. all of us.
